Q & A with President Guy Bailey President Guy Bailey and I participated in a question-andanswer session in Dallas at a luncheon on Jan. 14 sponsored by the Dallas Chapter of TTAA. I thought his responses are things that many of you are interested in, so I asked him to respond in writing to the same questions.

1. Discuss the criteria for reaching Tier One Status and how Texas Tech is doing in its quest for that status?

Bailey: A key point to remember is that institutions must meet National Research University Fund criteria for two consecutive fiscal years before the beginning of the biennium. For Texas Tech, this means FY10, which ended Aug. 31, 2010, and FY11, which will end Aug. 31, 2011. Final criteria from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board were set Jan. 27. Based on the data we have reported to the Coordinating Board, it appears that Texas Tech has met sufficient criteria to qualify for NRUF in the first fiscal year. That data has yet to be certified, but we feel very good about it.

The one benchmark that all seven emerging research universities must meet is to have $45 million in restricted research expenditures. Texas Tech reported just more than $51 million, up from $35 million last year and $27 million in 2008.

The emerging research university also must meet four of six additional criteria: 1. Endowment of $400 million. Texas Tech’s endowment is about $434 million.

2. Membership in Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi or American Research Libraries. Texas Tech is a member of all three.

3. Grant 200 doctoral degrees; Texas Tech granted 214 last year.

4. High quality faculty which means: a. Five National Academy Members or b. Seven Faculty awards or c. Comprehensive review of five doctoral programs Because the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board did not include Fulbright Awards in this category, Texas Tech may fall short by one faculty award. We do not have the requisite number of National Academy members. Although we do not need to meet this criterion to achieve NRUF (National Research University Fund) status, we may decide to have the comprehensive review of five doctoral programs anyway.

5. A high quality of freshman class a. 75th percentile of SAT at 1210 or b. 75th percentile of ACT at 26 or c. 50 percent of entering freshmen in top 25 percent and d. Freshman class must show progress toward Closing the Gaps (e.g., Federal TRiO Program)

How Does Texas Tech Perform? a. Texas Tech is at 1190 on the SAT b. Texas Tech is at 26 for the ACT c. Texas Tech is at 51.96 percent of entering freshmen in the top 25 percent...And d. We have Upward Bound, which is a TRiO Program.

6. High quality graduate programs—Number of graduate programs more than 50 and the following: a. Comprehensive review of graduate financial support or b. GRE scores for five doctoral degree programs equal to or greater than the national mean and c. Master’s graduation rate equal to or greater than 56 percent; doctoral rate equal to or greater than 58 percent and d. Median time to doctorate is 8 years or less.

How Texas Tech Performs: Texas Tech has 167 graduate programs a. Do not need to do this because we meet the other three b. We meet this benchmark c. Texas Tech is at 71 percent for master’s and 60.2 percent for doctoral d. Texas Tech’s median time to doctorate is 8 years.

2. How much does Tech stand to gain from reaching Tier One status?

Bailey: The distribution formula from NRUF to qualifying universities has not yet been set by the legislature. We believe that will happen during this legislative session. It is expected the first universities to quality for NRUF could receive anywhere from $3 to $7 million a year.

3. Additionally, how did Texas Tech benefit last year from House Bill 51?

Bailey: HB 51 offered two remarkable opportunities to help Emerging Research Universities move to national research university status. The immediate benefit came from the establishment of the Texas Research Incentive Fund (TRIP), which provided state matching dollars for private gifts that supported research. Texas Tech did remarkably well, raising $23.5 million that will be matched by $21.1 million in TRIP funding in FY10 and FY 11. The longer-term benefit comes from the establishment of NRUF, which gives Texas Tech and other universities a springboard for becoming a National Research University by providing additional dollars to institutions once they meet certain benchmarks. Think of NRUF as a mini PUF fund.

4. The state is projected to have a major deficit in this biennium. Describe Tech’s efforts to reduce its budget? How much do we have to reduce? How are we achieving that?

Bailey: Texas Tech has anticipated state budget issues for some time and began to plan for possible cuts last summer by establishing a Budget Working Group. The group, chaired by Provost Bob Smith, is made up of 40 representatives from faculty, students and staff. The group has developed plans for budget efficiencies and for revenue enhancements. Texas Tech has already taken first a 5 percent cut and is currently absorbing a second cut (2.5 percent) as directed by the state. We have done/are doing this by (1) not filling many vacant positions (a Critical Needs Hiring Committee reviews every position to determine if it must be filled), (2) by outsourcing certain noncore operations and (3) reducing travel and other expenditures as much as possible.

5. Do you feel that we will continue to have tuition increases in the future as a result of this budget shortfall?

Bailey: We may, but that really depends on the severity of the budget shortfall. It is too early to make any predictions about this.

6. Discuss our enrollment growth and the emphasis you have placed on graduate enrollment.

Bailey: Texas Tech has seen enormous enrollment growth over the last two years, growing from 28,422 in fall 2008 to 31,637 in fall 2010. Both our graduate and undergraduate enrollment has grown over this period. It is vital that Texas Tech increase its graduate enrollment as we move toward national research university status. Graduate students are vital to research projects and to assist faculty who teach undergraduate courses. This does NOT mean that there is less of an emphasis on undergraduate education. Texas Tech has a strong reputation for graduating well-prepared, hard-working students. That fact was highlighted this year when The Wall Street Journal ranked Texas Tech 18 out of the top 25 schools in the country in producing graduates most desired by employers. We ranked ahead of schools such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Virginia and University of Notre Dame. To conduct the survey, recruiters from nonprofit organizations, federal agencies and the nation’s largest public and private companies identified the schools from which they sought new employees.

7. Describe the new funding structure that you have put in place.

We live here.

We work here.

We cheer here.

Bailey: Responsibility Center Management is a form of budgeting that ties the allocation of revenue to the generation of revenue. Rather than receiving money as the result of lobbying efforts or administrative whim, units receive the revenue they generate (from tuition, state appropriations, research grants, etc.) minus their expenses (faculty costs, space utilization, administrative support, etc.). Some revenue is also set aside for institutional priorities that do not fully fund themselves. The more revenue a unit generates, the more money it receives. This form of budgeting incentivizes enrollment growth, externally funded research, and other forms of revenue generation and provides disincentives for the inefficient use of resources.

FOUNDATION BOARD GETS PREVIEW OF NEW RAWLS BUSINESS BUILDING During February’s meeting, Texas Tech University Foundation Board members were given a tour of the new Jerry S. Rawls College of Business building. Following the tour, the Dean of the Business College and Vice Chancellor of the Department of Facilities, Planning and Construction addressed the group describing how the new building preserves the architectural heritage of the main campus within a “green” setting that includes smart technologies required of a modern academic and research University.

The $70 million project is expected to be ready for classes in 2012.

NEWS Texas Tech University made the Forbes’ Top 10 list for minority outreach in areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Out of the 20 institutions listed in a Forbes.com survey, Texas Tech ranked No. 7 for minority outreach.

Recently, the National Science Foundation has approved six Texas Tech STEM—science, technology, engineering and mathematics—proposals, totaling $12.87 million in funding.

F or the third consecutive year , T exas T ech has set an enrollment record for the spring semester .

Tech had 29,604 students enrolled in the spring, up from the 28,006 students enrolled last spring. This is Tech’s third-highest enrollment for the spring semester.

In a move to accommodate the university’s enrollment increase, Texas Tech regents approved a 500-bed, $45 million residence hall to be built at the corner of 19th Street and Boston Avenue.

Included in the new dormitory will be a 20,000-squarefoot dining hall. The new facility will include a parking lot to alleviate some of the congested campus parking.

Pseudoscorpion

A Texas Tech researcher discovered a new pseudoscorpion in Yosemite National Park.

The blind pseudoscorpion, discovered by James Cokendolpher, an assistant curator and research scientist at the Museum of Texas Tech, lives in the caves of Yosemite National Park, and does not move around much.

When prey walks by, the pseudoscorpion grabs it with its venom-filled claws and waits for the venom to sink in.

Luckily, the creature is not large enough to be a threat to humans or animals.

Researchers at Texas Tech discovered the fossilized bones of a newly-discovered crocodile ancestor.

According to Sankar Chatterjee, Ph.D., the curator of paleontology at the Museum of Texas Tech and a Horn professor in the Department of Geosciences in the College of Arts and Sciences, this ancient crocodile looked very different from today’s crocodiles because it walked on land and looked like a typical terrestrial animal.

The fossil is of a brand new animal, and Chatterjee has not yet named it.

Because of a new CT scanner at the Texas Tech Department of Petroleum Engineering, Chatterjee was able to look inside the skull, which was found on a ranch and prepared by Doug Cunningham, and study the brain case and sinus cavities.

The Texas Tech School of Law recognized two distinguished alumni Feb. 25 at the Seventh Annual Law School Gala and Distinguished Awards Dinner at the Merket Alumni Center. The

Distinguished Alumni Award is given annually in recognition of service to the bench, the bar and the public. The Distinguished Service Award is given annually in recognition of outstanding service to the Texas Tech School of Law. The recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award is Robert A. “Bob” Black. Black, class of 1980, is the managing shareholder of the law firm of MehaffyWeber in Beaumont. He is the president-elect of the State Bar of Texas for 2010-2011.

Barbara K. Runge is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. Runge, class of 1974, is an accomplished solo practitioner in Houston. She is board certified in family law and works extensively with the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers in national and state level leadership roles.

PEOPLE Eileen Johnson, Ph.D., was recently selected to serve as the executive director of the Museum of Texas Tech University.

Johnson previously served as the interim director of the museum.

Her duties as executive director of the museum will consist mainly of overseeing the museum’s educational, scientific, cultural and research functions as well as its administrative operations and budget.

Gerry W. Beyer, a Texas Tech University School of Law professor, was elected into the American Law Institute, the most prestigious professional organization in the legal profession.

Beyer, who specializes in estate planning and is the Governor Preston E. Smith Regents Professor of Law, joined seven other Texas Tech law professors who were previously elected as members of the American Law Institute.

Eric Bruning, Ph.D., of the Atmospheric Science Group in the Department of Geosciences, recently received $52,000 from NOAA’s next-generation geostationary satellite program.

The funds will help the operations and maintenance of the West Texas Lighting Mapping Array, which will eventually be a key player in researching the scientific basis for use of total lightning mapping data in operational forecast environments.

Brett A. Houk, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work, has recently been awarded a grant from the National Geographic Society’s Committee for Research and Exploration.

The funds will be used this summer for a project involving Mayan ruins in La Milpa, Belize. The project seeks to answers questions about why the site was abandoned as well as to investigate the issues behind the collapse of the Classic Maya civilization in that region.

John D. Steinmetz, a Lubbock banker, was recently named the newest and youngest full member of the Texas Tech System Board of Regents.

Steinmetz, who graduated from Texas Tech in 2002, is the president of Vista Bank in Lubbock. He has served on several other local boards and vice chairman of the Lubbock County 2010 Census Committee.

Texas Tech recently announced a new dean of the College of Education. Officials announced Dec. 22 that Scott Ridley, Ph.D., will become the next dean of the College of Education on June 1.

Ridley worked at Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University for 20 years as an associate professor of educational psychology.

During his time there, he taught courses and published research.

Ridley has received several ASU and national awards, and his programs have received several federal grants. may/june 2011 T E C H S A N «

Texas Tech University is hosting the travelling exhibition produced by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

The exhibition, which explores how Nazis used the idea of genetic purification first on the mentally and physically disabled before implementing it for a radical racial purification to form the “master race,” opened Feb. 20 in the Diamond M gallery and runs until Aug. 7.

Lubbock will be the only stop this exhibition will make in Texas before moving to New York and retiring.

Lynne Fallwell, Ph.D., an assistant professor of history at Texas Tech specializing in German and medical history, is one of the key organizers responsible for bringing the exhibition to Lubbock.

“I was a fellow at the U.S. Holocaust Museum the summer they were putting Deadly Medicine together,” Fallwell said.

“They were looking for venues that had both medical schools and an arts and humanities school as well as places in the middle of the country that might not get exposed to this sort of an exhibition. Of course, I thought of Texas Tech. We seem to be the ideal center to house this sort of exhibition.”

Most of these Hungarian Jews deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau in May 1944 were killed soon after their arrival in gas chambers disguised as showers.

Texas Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (C A SNR) recognized six distinguished alumni Feb. 21 at the Merket Alumni Center .

The Distinguished Alumni Awards honor alumni who have made significant contributions to society, and whose accomplishments and careers have brought distinction to the college and to the professors associated with agriculture and natural resources. Program officials inaugurated a new recognition category, the CASNR Young Alumnus Award.

The recipients of this year’s distinguished alumni awards are as follows.

The Distinguished Alumna Award recipients were Brenda Barrington-Mendiola and Sharon Staley.

The New Achiever Award is given to graduates from within the last 12 years who have enhanced the reputation of the College of Human Sciences through their emerging achievements. The New Achiever Award recipient was Mary Bell.

The Distinguished Leadership Award recognizes a significant leader who has achieved the highest levels of excellence in one or more fields associated with the College of Human Sciences. This year’s Distinguished Leadership Award went to Cathy Nathan. The Lifetime Distinguished Service Award is reserved for those who have significantly advanced the college and its goals of excellence in teaching, research and service. The recipient of this award is Ethel McLeod.

Regardless of what you call them—bananas, ’nanas or nanners—this sweet yellow fruit is the world’s most popular.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, because of the difficulty shipping such a tender product, bananas were a very rare commodity in America. After more than a century of trial and error, fruit companies perfected the shipping process, and today the banana is one of the most affordable items in the produce section.

Chiquita is the world’s largest banana exporter.

That’s important to know if you’re a Red Raider, because alumnus Lance Barnett is Director of Quality, Food Safety, and Product Certifications for Chiquita Brands International. He lives in San José, Costa Rica, with his wife, Martha, and three sons: Cooper, 12; Levi, 8; and Nolan, 3.

Barnett knew from a young age he wanted to be involved in international production agriculture. His grandparents owned a 1,500-acre ranch in Goldthwaite (Mills County), Texas, and, while growing up, Barnett was involved in all aspects of the ranch’s operations. His grandfather employed Mexican laborers, and Barnett was always intrigued by them. Hearing them speak Spanish and learning their culture was the catalyst that set Barnett on a path toward Costa Rica.

Barnett knew he wanted to major in agriculture, and after visiting several other universities in Texas, decided on Texas Tech.

“I loved it from the first time I visited,” says Barnett, who received his bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics and a minor in Spanish in 1993. “For a kid from Goldthwaite, Texas, who’d had only 28 kids in his class…I knew it was a place that everyone could fit in. I made so many dear friends, and I, to this day, still consider them friends.”

One of those friends was a professor in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics, Eduardo Segarra, Ph.D. Today Segarra is Chairman of the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics.

“I give him a huge amount of credit for where I am today,” Barnett says, noting that Segarra helped him define his career goals.

Segarra saw something extraordinary in Barnett.

“Lance was a superb student who I got to know very well when he was in his sophomore year,” says Segarra. “I tell our students that college is about product differentiation, meaning that they need to pay attention, as early as possible, to those traits or characteristics that would differentiate them from everyone else. That is, students need to look at college just like we look at any other investment, but in this particular case, it is about an investment in their future.

“Because this investment is likely to have an impact on the rest of their lives, I strongly encourage them to spend quality time trying to find out what they really want to do with their lives and to use the experience of their professors, instructors, teachers and resources the university offers in their quest. Given that I had the opportunity to get to know Lance very well, I was able to make sure he was exposed to varied experiences and issues, which I knew could have a lasting impact on his formation. Specifically, I encouraged him to spend some time in Mexico with a friend of mine doing agricultural economics-related research.

“At that time, studying abroad was not popular, he was not fluent in Spanish, and in fact, was kind of apprehensive about taking off to Mexico. I think we had planned for him to be there four to six months, but he ended up spending an entire year. Anyway, when he got back, he knew exactly what he wanted to do. We made some changes to his degree plan, he honed his Spanish skills, graduated right on time, went on to graduate school and did a great job there. And the rest, as they say, is history.”

It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s Superfood!

Nanners are a crazy good food—not only tasty, but, really, really good for you. I happened upon a website (banana.com—seriously, that’s the name) dedicated to the tender lil’ crescent and discovered all sorts of tidbits that explain why the banana really is a super food.

Anemia: Bananas are high in iron. Consuming a banana can stimulate hemoglobin production, which helps people affected by anemia.

Blood Pressure/Stroke: Bananas are high in potassium (at least 350 mg per medium banana, as high as 602 mg in a large banana) yet low in sodium (2 mg or less per banana), great news for those who suffer from high blood pressure. The United States Food and Drug Administration allows the following claim to be made for bananas: Diets containing foods that are good sources of potassium and low in sodium may reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke.

Constipation: Bananas are high in fiber, and can help restore normal bowel action.

Depression: Bananas contain tryptophan, an essential amino acid that occurs in proteins.

The body converts tryptophan into serotonin, which has a calming effect.

Heartburn: Bananas can sooth heartburn.

Energy: Bananas are high in B vitamins, which help the body process energy from the food you eat. They also help form red blood cells.

Mood: Vitamin contains B6, which aids in regulating blood glucose levels. Unstable blood glucose levels can affect your mood.

Quitting smoking: Nicotine withdrawal is the most painful part of quitting smoking. Bananas contain vitamins C, A1, B6 and B12, as well as potassium and magnesium, which provide healing effects during nicotine withdrawal.

Stress: The mineral potassium helps normalize heart rhythms and oxygenate the brain.

Stress reduces potassium levels. Eating a banana a day helps replenish potassium stores.

Before you run to the kitchen to grab a nanner, wait, here’s a little more info…

Bananas do not grow on trees, but rather within a system of leafstalks that grow in concentric layers. The fruit grows in bunches, called “hands,” and contain 12 to 20 bananas, or “fingers.” A banana plant bears only one crop, then the plant is cut down and another grows from the same root, or rhizome.

Barnett completed his study abroad programs during the summers of 1992 and 1993 in the city of Guanajuato. Post graduation he moved back to Mexico to complete a Fulbright scholarship with the Mexican Secretary of Agriculture Research Station in Celaya, Guanajuato, he started the program in July 1994 and completed it in July 1995.

“I spent a year in San Miguel, Mexico,” he says. “I was assisting a researcher who worked for the Mexican Secretary of Agricultural Research station (INIFAP) in determining the financial and overall impact of NAFTA on large, medium, and small corn and grain farmers in Central America. I also studied the impacts of intensive agricultural on the water supply in Central Mexico…I would travel daily to Celaya, Guanajuato, about 25 miles away, to conduct the research, meet with the researchers, analyze data, conduct interviews, etc. Once or twice a month, I would travel to Mexico City to study and conduct research at UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México)…It was an incredible experience that allowed me to learn Spanish and gain valuable international experience.”

Barnett completed his Fulbright at the INIFAP and immediately enrolled in the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Phoenix, Ariz.

“I was able to earn my master’s degree and it was 100 percent focused on international management,” he says.

The combination of his fluency in Spanish, experience in agricultural economics and international experience made him a triple threat. Barnett attended a recruiting event hosted by Thunderbird and was snapped up by Chiquita after completing his master’s.

Barnett moved to the city where Chiquita is headquartered, Cincinnati, Ohio. He was enrolled in Chiquita’s Tropical Management Program.

“One of the things they asked me when they were interviewing me was, ‘Are you willing to live in the tropics?’” he says. “I went through a year and a half of training.”

Barnett held a number of positions, from business development to sales.

He was eventually moved to Chiquita’s Houston office and became the sole salesman for Chiquita’s H.E.B. grocery store account.

H.E.B. is known for quality produce, and Barnett was consistently pushed by his contacts with the grocer to improve the quality of bananas Chiquita provided. Bananas are delicate and quick to ripen. Since they are grown only in tropical regions, shipping the product from the tropical regions where they’re grown and dispersing them around the globe can present a challenge where quality is concerned.

“That was when I became part of a team that was developed to resolve quality issues,” he explains.

As part of the Global Quality Initiative, Barnett was the liaison between H.E.B. and Chiquita. He was spending more time in the tropics, where the bananas are harvested. The company headquarters wanted him to commute routinely from Central America to the U.S. “I suggested that, instead of commuting, they just move me to Costa Rica,” he says. “I was supposed to just be here two years, but it took me that long to learn the basics.”

He was there three weeks auditing farms as well as working on a project to install water purification systems in some of the surrounding villages.

"The picture is...of me walking through the village with children after visiting their chief," Barnett says. "It was an amazing experience, one of the highlights of my career with Chiquita."

The Barnetts have lived in Costa Rica six years, and he has been with the company 14 years. He has had the opportunity to visit Chiquita’s banana-producing regions all over the globe, including the Horn of East Africa (which is no longer part of Chiquita’s product area), Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama and the Philippines. He spends his days traveling and inspecting banana crops as well as communicating with the local Chiquita employees.

His background made him a perfect fit for his position as Director of Quality, Food Safety, and Product Certifications for Chiquita Brands.

“Agriculture is still agriculture, and my knowledge in that area has helped immensely,” he says.

“So has my understanding of the cultural component. The human component is huge: bananas are labor-intensive, there’s very little mechanization.”

Chiquita employs 18,000 people across the varied regions of Mexico, Central and South America, as well as the Philippines—Barnett’s ability to work well with others has made his job more manageable. His mentor and former professor says Barnett’s personality and experience have combined to create a person who makes a difference.

“If I were to succinctly describe Lance Barnett I would describe him as a gentle man with deep-rooted family values who possesses superb analytical skills and is a sound decision-maker,” Segarro says. “Lance, in my book, truly embodies all those qualities we, in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics (at Texas Tech University), hope to see all our students develop once they graduate and begin to contribute to society in whatever roles they take on.

More to Chiquita than Bananas When most people hear the name “Chiquita,” they think “bananas.” The Chiquita company was started in 1899, the product of a merger of two fruit companies that primarily imported bananas. At the time of the merger the company was called United Brands Company.

Chiquita became a household name post-World War II, when the United Brands company introduced the Chiquita character and accompanying popular jingle. In 1984, the company’s name was officially changed from United Brands to Chiquita Brands International. Both Barnett and his wife are from Goldthwaite, Texas. Since Costa Rica experiences its rainy season from May through December, Barnett’s wife, Martha, and their three sons spend at least one month each summer back in Goldthwaite.

“During our rainy season, it rains every single day,” he explains.

“So summer is a good time, since school is out, to get out of the country for a while.”

The family also spends two weeks during the Christmas holiday season in Texas. Barnett acknowledges that he misses Texas, and Texas Tech, but they enjoy many benefits living in Costa Rica.

The entire family is bilingual. Their youngest son, Nolan, spoke Spanish as his first language since he was born in Costa Rica—he also has dual citizenship. The two older boys attend an American school and are active soccer players.

“We have soccer-crazy boys,” he says. “We are also active in Boy Scouts. I was an Eagle Scout and decided to start a troop here. We live in Costa Rica’s Central Valley, so we have mild weather. It’s about 75 to 80 degrees year-round. The climate is a definite benefit.”

They also enjoy frequent beach vacations. They can be on the beach of the Pacific Ocean in an hour and a half, and on the Caribbean beach in four hours. They are close to mountainous regions and rain forests.

“There are not as many resorts on the Caribbean coasts here, the beaches are less developed,” Barnett says. “However, on the Pacific Coast, Costa Rica has numerous resorts.Overall, we love it.”

Maj. Gen. Wendy M. Masiello epitomizes the United States Air Force’s classic mot to “Aim High.”

When Wendy Motlong Masiello received her commission in the United States Air Force in December 1980, the newly minted 2nd lieutenant didn’t imagine she was beginning what would be her life’s work. She had just graduated from Texas Tech with a bachelor’s degree in marketing as a distinguished graduate of the Air Force ROTC program.

“Never would I have thought I would have this career,” she recalls. “I remember telling my mom I was going to go into the Air Force. She was stunned because that was not something anyone in our family had ever done.”

While in college, Lubbock native Masiello roomed with two girls who both were members of Angel Flight. Through their influence, she, too, joined the organization.

“I thought, ‘There’s just so much more to the world than what I knew in West Texas,’” she says. “I thought maybe the Air Force would let me see a little bit more of that world. I joined Angel Flight, which was a service organization that supported the Air Force and Air Force ROTC. I really enjoyed it and got very involved. I just thought the world of the Air Force officers and enlisted who ran the ROTC detachment. They were great people who really cared about the cadets. They had great integrity, and I thought, ‘If this is what the Air Force is about, I want to spend some time as a part of it....’”

And, spent some time she has.

Masiello, whose current rank in the Air Force is major general, is program executive officer for Combat and Mission Support, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, Washington, D.C. She leads the acquisition of Air Force services and is responsible for more than $184 billion in existing and planned contracts across the Air Force.

The general notes that her job is an unusual one.

“It’s the first one in the Department of Defense that now DoD is suggesting that the Army and Navy follow our lead,” she says. “So for the past several months, we’ve been coaching the Army and Navy on what it means to do services acquisition, at least from the Air Force perspective, as they figure out how to establish similar efforts within their services. It’s been fun. It’s interesting being the first to do something different in institutions that have been around for a long time.”

A great deal of Masiello’s time is spent working with government contractors to be sure their services and goods are what the Air Force needs. She often travels to visit Air Force teams responsible for service acquisition so that she can meet and work with them face-to-face.

She certainly has the experience to do it well. Her first position in acquisitions was as procurement and production officer, Air Force Plant Representative Office, General Electric Space Systems Division, King of Prussia, Pa. She went on to study at the Air Force Institute of Technology, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. Following that stint, she served as an instructor for Quantitative Contract Analysis, Air Force Institute of Technology, Wright-Patterson AFB. By the late 1980s, she served as air staff training officer, Tactical Programs and Space and Strategic Defense Directorates, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force (Acquisition), Washington, D.C., and then as deputy director, Contracting Branch, Office of Special Projects, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, Los Angeles, Calif.

She once again returned to the classroom at the Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell AFB, Ala. Following that time, she served as executive director, Office of Inspector General, National Reconnaissance Office, Chantilly, Va., for three years.

Beginning in October 1996, for the next 10 years, she held a series of positions involving contracting. She was deputy chief, Weapons, Air Base and Range Contracting Division, Air Base and Range Program Office, Eglin AFB, Fla.; chief, Advanced Medium Range Air-toAir Missile Contracting Division, Air-to-Air Joint Systems Program Office, Eglin AFB, Fla. She attended Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington, D.C., for a year beginning in 1998.

The following year, she became deputy director, Plans and Programs, Air Armament Center, Eglin AFB, Fla., and then director of contracting, Air Armament Center, Eglin AFB, Fla. She served as vice commander, 95th Air Base Wing, Edwards AFB, Calif. and then commander, 95th Air Base Wing, Edwards AFB, Calif.

She became associate deputy assistant secretary (Contracting), Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, Washington, D.C., a position she held until her current job.

Although 12-hour days filled with correspondence, meetings and reviews of contractors’ performances are the norm for her, she has spent time deployed to the Middle East, namely Afghanistan and Iraq. Her position at the time was director of contracting, Aeronautical Systems Center, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, and principal assistant for Contracting Forces in Iraq/Afghanistan, Joint Contracting Command—Iraq/Afghanistan, Baghdad, Iraq.

“I was there July 2005 to January 2006, and I have to tell you, it was probably one of the calmest periods in both of those theaters,” she says. “Things got pretty hot shortly after I left in 2006. I loved every minute of my time there. I had contract responsibility in all of Iraq for taking care of the forces. I had responsibility in Afghanistan for taking care of the forces as well as standing up the Afghani police and security teams.

“While I was in the theater, the Pakistani earthquake occurred. I sent a team in to support the humanitarian relief in Pakistan. So, during my 7-month deployment I experienced three very different areas of responsibility—each fabulous in its own right. It was a privilege to have the opportunity to serve in that really intense environment, and rewarding to see your work could make a difference very quickly.”

The general is the recipient of numerous military honors, including the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star Medal.

Back at home, Masiello shares her life with her husband, Brig. Gen. Thomas J. “Tom” Masiello, also active-duty Air Force. He is deputy assistant secretary for Plans, Programs and Operations, Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, U.S. Department of State, Washington, D.C., and oversees the bureau’s offices of Plans, Policy and Analysis; Weapons Removal and Abatement; and International Security Operations.

“We have had our together times and our apart times, and I will tell you one thing that’s just amazing right now is how hard the Air Force is working to keep us together,” she says. “Even though additional moves are probably in the cards for us in the next year, the plan is to keep

us together, probably still here in the D.C. area, which is wonderful. They don’t have to do that, but we both feel really fortunate that the Air Force is trying to work that out for us.”

She adds that her two stepsons have chosen to follow the family tradition. Her older stepson, Michael, is a 2nd lieutenant in the Air Force, going through pilot training in Del Rio, Texas. The younger, Robert, is a cadet at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

“We were surprised the younger was interested in the military,” she says. “He is really enjoying it. You don’t always have that kind of influence. It’s surprising when it translates into someone’s wanting to do what you’ve been doing. It’s humbling—it makes you realize how influential your behavior and decisions are—other people are watching them.”

Of her own three siblings, the general notes that one of her brothers, Blake Motlong, served in the Air Force, flying F-16s for a time.

Despite challenges such as budget cuts, Masiello remains committed to her service. She notes that the best part of her job remains working with and helping others.

“The best part is the people,” she says. “It’s the educational opportunities that I’ve had. It’s the mission and being part of something that’s bigger than I am and feeling like what I had to offer was appreciated. As long as what I have is needed by my Air Force and to the Federal Government, I’m here to serve.”

The practice of yoga is thousands of years old, some accounts say 2,000 years, others say 5,000 years. Either way, between 2,000 and 5,000 years makes yoga an old, shall we say, art form.

Because, in large part, yoga is a kind of art. It’s the combination of meditation, relaxation, contemplation and focused breathing—it stretches and strengthens both the body and mind.

Alumna Haley Bevers was searching; she just didn’t know it. What she found altered her life so profoundly, she gave up a lucrative career to fulfill a dream.

Bevers, a Lubbock native who graduated from Monterey High School, earned a bachelor’s degree in personal financial planning in 2005 from Texas Tech. She moved to the Metroplex to pursue a career in financial planning, and spent several years working for firms in both Dallas and Fort Worth. She also earned her Certified Financial Planner designation. She began to realize, while working with clients, that they were searching for empowerment, not just with their financial goals, but in all areas of life. At the same time, she realized she was not getting what she wanted from her career.

“I was working 70-80 hour weeks, and I wasn’t finding value in my work,” she says. “I quit what I was doing and decided to follow my dream of yoga, because I had such a passion for it.”

Bevers discovered yoga while an undergraduate at Tech, and comments that her first time on a yoga mat she felt like she was home. While living in Fort Worth she discovered Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga. Vinyasa means energy that flows without resistance, and is often used to describe power yoga. Baptiste refers to Baron Baptiste, a man who certifies yoga instructors worldwide. This type of yoga strengthens the body and brings harmony to the body, mind and relationships.

“Yoga is great for everyone, no joke!” says Julia Marcella Willingham, a medical student at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center who will receive her M.D. in May 2013 and one of Bever’s instructors. “Haley and I met at Indigo Yoga, a Baptiste yoga studio in Fort Worth. One day, after class, I was talking about moving to Lubbock in a few months, and Haley looked at me and said, ‘Me, too! That’s where I’m from.’

We’ve been friends ever since.

“Yoga is something that people get hooked on. They love coming to the studio and actually look forward to their daily workout. Haley is helping Lubbock get healthier in a way that is fun and challenging long-term. Just look at Haley. She’s been practicing for over seven years and still loves it.”

Bevers insists that continuous yoga practice creates lasting and impacting changes.

“I didn’t find yoga, yoga found me,” she says. “It was the first time I felt stillness, the first time I ever felt peace. The feeling was so overwhelming, I took off chasing it. I trained in New York, Dallas, anywhere I could learn more about yoga, I went. That’s when things started to click.

“I discovered Baron Baptiste, which is the style of yoga I teach. He’s a major player in the movement of power yoga to the Western world. I trained in his boot camp, and it changed my life from A to Z. Now when I smile, I smile from the inside, I’m truly grateful for life. I sleep better because I gained control of my mind, my body changed, I lost weight, I even began treating people differently. I look at people with compassion, not judgment. My career changed, my friends changed.”

Bevers was determined to spread the joy of yoga. She quit her job, moved home to Lubbock and began teaching classes anywhere she could, including people’s garages or patios. While building up her business, she worked in the trust department of a Lubbock bank.

“I’ve built my business from the ground up,” she notes.

“What I teach is what I live, and you have to put your faith out there.”

She named her business The Yoga Stand and opened her own studio in 2010. Bevers has completed the Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga Level 1 Teacher Training and, in 2010, she completed the Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga Level 2 Teacher Training. She is a certified Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga instructor and is certified with Yoga Alliance as RYT (registered yoga teacher) 200 Hour, meaning she has received more than 200 hours of training.

Bevers owns the first Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga studio in Lubbock. And, for Lubbock, it’s a new concept. Her classes are full and she serves a variety of clients, from Tech students, to professionals in the community, even a professional bareback rider.

“Haley and my wife, Francie, who is also a current student of Haley’s, were sorority sisters at Tech in Chi Omega,” says Wes Stevenson, a PRCA cowboy who is frequently ranked in the top five in world standings and has qualified six times for the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. “I started yoga about a year ago (in 2010) because my wife insisted I would enjoy it and that it would make me more competitive. I knew nothing about it, and I didn’t think it would benefit me. I thought running and lifting weights would work the best.”

It took about a month for Stevenson to see progress.

“It had a calming effect, I gained strength, speed and accuracy,” he says. “At 31 years old, and in a sport where I’m competing with much younger individuals, I have to keep my body in the best form possible, and yoga helps me do that.”

Stevenson values Bevers’ abilities so much that he flew her to Las Vegas in December during the National Finals Rodeo so that she could prepare him for competition. And while Stevenson is an athlete who earns his living by being fit, Bevers says yoga is for everyone, not just elite athletes. Particularly the type of yoga she teaches, because her students can tailor the poses to best fit them and it’s appropriate for beginners and advanced practitioners.

“Don’t let ideas of not being flexible, coordinated or thin enough stop you from trying it out,” says Willingham. “At The Yoga Stand, students of all different levels, ages, and sizes practice together. I’ve practiced on the same row as a 9-year-old girl, a college guy, and a grandmother. Physically, it’s a fun and challenging way to stay in shape. Mentally, it’s a break from the chaos of daily life. During class, I get to focus just on me. When I walk out the door I feel balanced, recharged, and ready for anything. Who doesn’t want that?”

Another of Bever’s and Willingham’s client’s explains why yoga won her over.

“I met Haley through Julia Willingham, and will be forever grateful to them both for providing such a wonderful yoga home for me while I was in Lubbock,” says Alyson G. Falk, who was attending the Texas Tech School of Law and graduated in December with her law degree. “With The Yoga Stand, Haley has made yoga accessible to all levels of students, and she has provided a friendly and welcoming environment for daily practice.

“Haley has transferred the drive and professionalism from her former career to her work at The Yoga Stand, and she is always available to share her wealth of knowledge with her students. Bevers says everybody gets something different from yoga.

“Yoga centers you,” she says. “It’s not a religion, but whatever you believe will be strengthened by 100. It’s your own practice, your own walk, your own path. It encourages you to think for yourself.”

She also says that yoga is something that can never be fully mastered, and that it’s a constant learning process. It also provides flexibility, strength training and cardiovascular work. For Bevers, it’s her main source of exercise.

“I do enjoy cycling and running in the spring and summer, or Crossfit,” she says.

“But, you get all you need in power yoga, it covers everything. Yoga brings me peace, rest, strength, and…love. Baptiste teaches, ‘Put your prayers to poses.’ I live by that credo. The grace of God and practicing yoga taught me freedom.”

When Bevers says, “Anything is possible if you learn the art of letting go,” she’s talking about letting go of fear, of past failure, of what people think, of what you think you can or can’t accomplish. Letting go is empowering—which is its own form of strength-training.

West Texas Changes

March appeared to be not just a month of seasonal change—but also a month of change around Texas Tech.

Just one week after Kirby Hocutt was introduced as the 13th athletics director at Texas Tech, Tech men’s basketball coach Pat Knight was on his way out of West Texas, after being the head coach of Red Raider basketball for more than three years, while Billy Clyde Gillispie was being ushered in as the new head coach.

Knight alluded at the Big 12 Conference media days in the fall that the season could end up this way if Tech did not have success after making the National Invitation Tournament, saying 2010-11 would be a season where, “You either get an extension or you’re fired.”

It wound up the latter, with the Red Raiders going 13-19 and missing out on what some thought would be a chance to get back to the NCAA Tournament this year.

“I’d do it all over again,” Knight said about his preseason remarks. “It wasn’t because of what I said. It would have happened even if I didn’t say that because we’ve had a down year. Expectations were high after going to the NIT, and I wanted to get the guys pumped up and show that I was putting myself out on the line for it. Obviously, it didn’t work too well, but I’d do it again.”

Knight left with an overall mark of 50-61 in three full seasons, going just 12-36 in Big 12 Conference play with his lone winning season coming last year. Many could understand the difficulty of the shoes he had to fill, taking over for his father and legendary coach Bob Knight, who retired in 2008 just a little more than halfway through the season.

Pat Knight’s firing became official on March 9 following Tech’s first round loss to Missouri at the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City. Knight was in a full suit and tie for the first time in his career as an assistant or head coach, going out in style like most coaches would expect him to do.

He even took the chance to laugh and smile one last time with the media after Tech’s loss to Missouri, doing a little real estate advertising.

“If anybody’s looking for a house in Lubbock, Texas, I know seven of them that are available in varying sizes; each of them have different bedrooms and different baths,” he said, referring to his house and his assistants’ homes. “If anybody is looking for any real estate in Lubbock, I know seven places available at a good price.”

Knight leaves with six seniors that he started coaching when they were freshmen and said he loved every minute of his chance to coach in Lubbock and will miss everyone around West Texas.

“It was a great chapter in my basketball career,” he said. “Ten great years: seven as an assistant, three as a head coach. It will always be special to me. It’s a little different situation than what we went through at Indiana. I love the people, the city, and I love the college. It’s not like next year you’re going to be sitting there rooting against them or wanting them to do bad. I wish the best for them.”

Gillispie enters West Texas 16 years after being around the program at South Plains College in Levelland. But his career has been defined in the last seven years with Texas-El Paso, Texas A&M and Kentucky.

He turned both men’s basketball programs around at UTEP and Texas A&M, taking each to the postseason after having losing seasons the years before. His turnaround at Texas A&M is considered one of the greatest ever.

The Aggies were never relevant in men’s basketball and went 7-22 the year before Gillispie arrived.

A&M went 22-10 his first season and made an appearance in the NIT before two straight season of going to the NCAA Tournament—a streak that was recently extended to five consecutive seasons by coach Mark Turgeon after Gillispie left in 2009 to go coach at powerhouse Kentucky.

Now he says he has come back home and is ready to turn things around.

“Our goal is to win every time we get on the court—no matter who we are playing or what the circumstances may be,” Gillispie said. “I can’t guarantee every single game is going to be a win. I can guarantee that there is not anybody that’s going to come into this place and play harder than us or better together than us. I’ll guarantee that to happen. And when you have those things happening, and If you have the right talent, those things usually turn into being winners.”

HOCUTT NAMED ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Kirby Hocutt always said he would find a way to get back to his roots in Texas one day.

That day came on March 2 when Texas Tech announced that Hocutt would succeed Gerald Myers as the 13th athletic director in school history.

“I’m so excited to come home to the great state of Texas,” Hocutt said. “I have to say I have been so impressed and overwhelmed by the extremely warm welcome that we have received from the entire Texas Tech family … It’s been tremendous.”

Hocutt, 39, comes over with his wife, Diane, and two sons, Drew and Brooks. He spent most of the last three years as the athletic director at the University of Miami (Florida). He was also the athletics director at the University of Ohio where he significantly reorganized the athletic department’s annual giving program. He helped increase fundraising by more than 75 percent, and secured the second largest major gift in school athletics history. He also increased season ticket sales in football by 112 percent and by 50 percent in men’s basketball.

Hocutt played football at Kansas State where he received his bachelor’s degree and then went on to get his master’s at the University of Oklahoma, where he also became a primary person in the athletic department. According to his bio, he led Oklahoma’s athletics fundraising to an all-time high in annual giving and capital campaigns.

From 1998 to 2005, Oklahoma’s annual giving increased from $3.4 million to more than $17 million. That 400 percent increase in annual giving was one of the highest percentage increases in intercollegiate athletics history.

Beginning in 1999, Hocutt served in a leadership position in the strategic planning for a $100 million capital campaign. The $120 million campaign was unique in that it focused on facility construction or improvements for each of Oklahoma’s 20 sports.

Hocutt had plenty to say about the fantastic athletic and university facilities he’s been able to see and said there were four thoughts constantly in his mind after he got on campus.

“Texas, excellence, champions, healthy relationships,” he said. “If you take the first letter of each of those four words you get TECH. Texas, excellence, champions, healthy relationships. It’s an honor to accept this tremendous opportunity. I look forward to getting to Lubbock, to getting to know each and every one of you, to settling in. “… I want us to be one of the premier intercollegiate athletic programs in the country. Every arena, every stadium that we compete in has a scoreboard.

Winning is important or we wouldn’t keep score. We want to win and win the right way and do things the right way.”

When Texas Tech softball coach Shanon Hays and Tech baseball coach Dan Spencer announced at the annual First Pitch Luncheon that there were some exciting games to see this season—they weren’t kidding.

Tech softball blew open the gates to a record-best 24-0 start and No. 19 ranking in the country to start the 2011 season.

Hays, in his second season after coming over from Lubbock Christian University where he won an NAIA National Championship in his first year, watched his young squad outscore its opposition, 54-1, over six games of the Red Raider Classic in March as the finale was the only game to go longer than five innings.

“I thought we honestly played well all weekend,” Hays said. “All five of our pitchers threw well and threw strikes, and our lineup top to bottom had significant hits in each game. We will obviously have a bigger test Wednesday against New Mexico, but we just have to take it one game at a time and take it from there.”

Tech baseball also won its opening Red Raider Classic tournament at home, beating Northwestern, Western Michigan and Utah Valley to get off to a 4-0 start. Kelby Tomlinson, Jamodrick McGruder, Nick Popescu, Stephen Hagen and Bo Altobelli all had multi-hit games for the Red Raiders during their opening series.

All five were named to the all-tournament team along with 2010 Big 12 Freshman of the Year Barrett Barnes, pitcher John Neely, Robbie Kilcrease, and Reid Redman.

LADY RAIDERS DANCE AGAIN AT NCAA TOURNAMENT

It’s been a season of redemption for Kristy Curry and the Lady Raider basketball team.

And after the final buzzer of Texas Tech’s regular season finale against Oklahoma sounded at United Spirit Arena, it was clear that Lady Raider basketball was back in full force.

Tech beat No. 1 Baylor, No. 18 Oklahoma and No. 20 Iowa State in three of its last six games to finish the 2010-11 regular season with a 21-9 mark and 8-8 record in conference — both bests under Curry since she took over the team in 2006.

The Lady Raiders’ 56-45 win over the top-ranked Lady Bears on Feb. 19 was the first win over a No. 1-ranked team since Tech beat Texas in 2002.

Tech took another step forward by winning its first Big 12 Tournament game since 2006, beating Oklahoma State 75-52 in Kansas City before losing in the final second to Oklahoma just four days after beating the Sooners in Lubbock. The win over the Cowgirls all but punched Tech’s ticket to return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005.

“It’s been incredible to see the way these girls have responded this season,” Curry said. “They deserve it.”

Texas Tech alumni associaTion annual RepoRT 2010

Letter from the executive Director Dear Alumni Association Member: The past year was a most interesting one for the Texas Tech Alumni Association.

In June, work was completed on the expansion of the Merket Alumni Center. The expansion has doubled the size of the ballroom and added an entry parlor, new marketing offices and a new catering kitchen. It also added a bride’s room because of the large number of weddings and wedding receptions in our building from early spring to mid-fall each year.

The Texas Tech Legacy program, begun in January 2010, is off to a good start with more than 1,500 Legacies enrolled as of Dec. 31, 2010. Each Legacy participant will receive a welcome letter and gift, a personalized membership card, annual birthday greetings, and invitations to Legacy Program events throughout their membership. At various stages of childhood, Legacies will receive exclusive gifts to remind them that they are part of the Texas Tech family. Gifts include items such as a children’s story book, piggy bank, backpack and key chain.

The Alumni Association’s National Board appointed a special task force in June 2010 to update our website, and we anticipate the new website to be launched in summer 2011. We believe this new website will be much more functional than our current site. We are working with a Dallas website research, design and development company, RD2.

We also have been active in the area of legislative advocacy for the university. Although we cannot spend Alumni Association dollars to influence political decisions, we can work to provide information to interested alumni and encourage them to get more involved to assist Texas Tech regarding legislative issues. After a successful 2009 Texas Tech Day in Austin, we spent 2010 working on ways to improve our efforts for 2011.

Alumni AssociAtion AwArds DistinguisheD Alumni AwArDs The Texas Tech Alumni Association honored Les Shepherd, Jim Skinner and Bobby Waddle as its 2010 Distinguished Alumni.

Les Shepherd (B.A. Architecture, ’83) holds the unique position of chief architect of the United States General Services Administration and assistant commissioner for design and construction. In this position, which he has held since 2007, he oversees $12 billion of work on buildings throughout the nation, including federal courthouses, office buildings, land ports of entry, national laboratories, history preservation and modernization projects and the Art in Architecture and Fine Arts conservation programs.

During his 21-year tenure with the GSA, he has held numerous positions. In his current position, he provides leadership, policy direction and program guidance. He represents the agency with professional societies and trade organizations.

One of Shepherd’s biggest accomplishments has been successfully developing and managing the Design Excellence and Construction Excellence Programs, which are recognized internationally. The Design Excellence Program has raised the quality standard for public architecture.

In the past three years, he has received 12 major design awards for his work. Some of the most recent ones are Government Building of the year from the New York Chapter of the Building Owners and Managers Association for the historic Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House in New York and the Downtown Cleveland Alliance Award for the Metzenbaum U.S. Courthouse as part of redevelopment of downtown.

Shepherd and his wife, Hilary Sproul, live in Virginia with their children, Madison and Jared.

James E. Skinner is executive vice president and chief financial officer of the iconic Neiman Marcus Inc., a position he has held since 2007. He has served as chief financial officer of the company since 2001.

The Neiman Marcus Group Inc. operations include the Specialty Retail Stores segment, which consists primarily of Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman stores. The Direct Marketing Segment conducts print catalog and online operations under the Neiman Marcus, Horchow and Bergdorf Goodman brand names.

Prior to working with Neiman Marcus, he was senior vice president and chief financial officer of CapRock Communications Corp. He also served in several positions, including executive vice president and chief financial officer with CompUSA Inc. Skinner was a partner with Ernst & Young from 1987 to 1991.

Skinner serves on the board of directors of Fossil Inc. since 2007, and is the chairman of the audit committee.

While a student at Texas Tech, Skinner was active with Phi Eta Sigma, a national honor society for first-year college students; Beta Alpha Psi, an international honor society for accounting and finance students; and the Accounting Society. He earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1974 from Texas Tech University.

Skinner and his wife, Alice, live in Dallas and have three married daughters and two grandsons.

Bobby G. Waddle (B.A. Agriculture, ’55) has spent his entire adult life in service to his country and community. The lifetime resident of DeSoto, Texas, farms and ranches on land that has been in his family for generations. Waddle has just completed a term as mayor of DeSoto. He was first elected to the City Council in 2001. He was selected as mayor pro tem in 2002 and served as such for the next five years. He was elected mayor in 2007. In 2005 the DeSoto Chamber of Commerce created the Bobby Waddle Citizen of the Year Award.

Waddle retired from the United States Air Force as a colonel in 1985. During his 30 years in the service, he was a flight instructor, aide and protocol officer. He flew more than 150 combat missions and more than 5,000 hours of military flying time. He served as commander of the 40th Cadet Squadron at the U.S. Air Force Academy. He was chief of Air Force Academy Activities Group at the Pentagon. He received two Legion of Merit Awards, the Distinguished Flying Cross and 11 Air Medals.

He is a member of the DeSoto Lions Club and serves on the administrative board of his church. He and his wife, Sherry, have three daughters, Tanya Land, Kimberly Buttgen and Elizabeth Dowell, and eight grandchildren.

ALumni AssociAtion AwArDs DistinguisheD service AwArD The Distinguished Service Award, first presented to Dean Lewis N. Jones in 1977, was created to recognize and commend outstanding service rendered to the Texas Tech Alumni Association and to Texas Tech University. Wayne James, former Executive Director of the Texas Tech Ex-Students Association, was 2010’s honoree for the Distinguished Service Award.

James attended Texas Tech where he received his degree in Education and Journalism in 1957. He received his masters Degree in Junior College Administration, with a minor in Journalism and Government in 1964. As a student, James served on several different organizations including Student Council representative; editor-in-chief of The Toreador; Saddle Tramps vice president; president of Sneed Hall, Vice President of future Teachers of America and Student Union Executive Board member. He later taught public relations in the Department of Mass Communications at Texas Tech.

After completing his education, James joined the Texas Tech Ex-Students Association as the Field Secretary in 1957, was named Assistant Director in 1959 and Executive Director in 1960.

Because of a shortage of funds, James often filled in as editor of both the Texas Techsan magazine and Tech Talks newspaper. During this time, he began to use four-color photos on the covers of all issues of the magazine. In 1964, it was recognized as the first alumni magazine in the nation to do so. The Texas Tech Ex-Students Association was selected as one of only two university alumni associations in the nation in 1971 to be the recipient of the prestigious Alumni Association Award for Program Excellence, the highest award presented annually by the American Alumni Council.

After leaving the Texas Tech Ex-Students Association in 1978, James led two multi-state Trade Associations—the Southwestern Meat Packers Association and the Southwest Hardware and Implement Dealers Association.

In 1979 he obtained the “Certified Association Executive” designation for work on all aspects of association management, meeting planning, government affairs and communications. Only five percent of Association executives in the nation have obtained the designation of CAE. In 1985, he became Executive Director of the Texas Lathing and Plastering Contractors Association and the Texas Bureau for Lathing and Plastering. In this position, he provided technical information on the products to architects and people involved in construction.

He developed technical books, two CDs and two on-line courses for architects and others in the specifications profession. He was recognized twice by an international construction association as the Association Executive of the Year.

top techsAns The Texas Tech Alumni Association honored four outstanding Texas Tech staff members at the 2010 Top Techsan Luncheon during the annual Homecoming Festivities on campus. The 2010 honorees were Derrick Ginter, Diane Coffman, Janice Forburger Brumley, and Glenna Andrews.

Each of the four honorees received a plaque and a cash award of $500 during the presentations. Each honoree was recognized for his or her extraordinary work proficiency and an attitude of team spirit within the Texas Tech family.

ALumni AssociAtion highLights legacy Program The Texas Tech Legacy Program officially launched Jan. 1, 2010, after beginning enrollment in September 2009. The program was extremely successful in its first year, welcoming more than 1,500 children and grandchildren into the program. Those Legacy members came from more than 650 families, and the program generated almost 180 new Alumni Association memberships.

In August, we hosted our first Legacy Program family event in Dallas. More than 15 families and all of their Legacies attended the event, which was held at a local restaurant. Each Legacy received a free meal and goodie bag from the Texas Tech Alumni Association.

We hope to bring more Legacy events such as this one to a community near you in future years. online communications As social media continued to become a larger part of our everyday lives in 2010, the Texas Tech Alumni Association continued to stay on the forefront of the new medium. The TTAA maintains a Facebook Fan Page with more than 3,500 fans, a Twitter feed with more than 750 followers and a blog. The TTAA also had a presence on YouTube and LinkedIn. Also in 2010, the TTAA made the commitment to dramatically upgrade its website. The TTAA National Board of Directors appointed a website task force and allocated funds to create not only a new look, but also to improve the capabilities of the site. The TTAA partnered with RD2 in Dallas to begin that process. The new site is scheduled to launch Summer 2011.

To assist these efforts, the Alumni Association’s marketing and membership department developed new job responsibilities to create a Director of Multimedia and Online Communications position. This position will focus on improving our social media presence as well as generating original content for the new website.

This Collector’s Series of Texas Tech Raider Wines was specifically developed for Texas Tech and the grapes were especially selected for the program.

In 2010, three wines were produced as part of the Collector’s Series—a 2009 Viognier, a 2008 Tempranillo and a 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon. Fewer than 150 cases of each wine were produced exclusively for this program. Llano Estacado Winery also continues to produce the Raider White Zinfandel.

The Texas Tech wine program was developed as a partnership between two icons of the Texas South Plains — Texas Tech University and Llano Estacado Winery. A portion of the sales proceeds from Texas Tech wines help support the Texas Tech Alumni Association and wine and grape research at Texas Tech University. liberty Mutual contract In 2010, the Texas Tech Alumni Association was excited to extend our partnership with Liberty Mutual into 2015. Liberty Mutual, which has been the TTAA’s home and auto insurance partner since 2000, has been a very supportive partner, and the TTAA looks forward to working with them to continue providing great products for Red Raiders.

Masked Rider Monument Unveiled and dedicated in the year 2000, the life-and-a-quarter-sized, commissioned Masked Rider monument is an inspiring addition to the campus landscape. The monument, located south of Frazier Alumni Pavilion, was fashioned by renowned sculptor Grant Speed of Lindon, Utah.

To fund the project, a limited number of monument replicas are being sold through the Texas Tech Alumni Association. The replicas are 2 feet long by 1.5 feet tall, an impressive artistic addition to any business lobby, home or personal office.

Although contributions of any amount are appreciated, limited edition replicas are available for $7,500 and can be paid with three annual pledges of $2,500. Replicas will be delivered upon first payment.

The committee works to improve the AMS Membership experience by informing members of AMS related conferences, programs, scholarships, fellowships, etc. The committee hosted the first Young Professionals Reception where they could network with other members in the public and private sectors, as well as provide suggestions to our committee on how to best serve their interests. livestock judging team won first place at the competitive Southwestern Livestock Exposition’s Livestock Judging Contest hosted by the Fort Worth Stock Show in February.

Texas Tech won the sheep, cattle and reasons divisions. Texas Tech had four of the top-ten individuals. Kody Lucherk was high individual overall. Clay Morrison finished second. Sixth high individual was Brady Ragland , and ninth high individual was Joel Riedel .

Other team members are Clay Burson, Brandi Capps, Jordan Clem, Clayton Gardner, Tanner Kieschnick, Katie Rose McCullough, Nathan Pond, Logan Pritchett, Nathan Reeves, Markus Miller, Trevor White and Loni Woolley.

Jenna Payne , a graduate student pursuing an MBA, was one of 19 students from across the state of Texas who received $10,000 scholarships from the Texas Business Hall of Fame Foundation during a ceremony in November.

Payne graduated in August 2007 with a BBA in Sports, Sponsorship, & Sales and Management.

Upon graduation, she began working for Daktronics Sports Marketing as the Regional Contract Fulfillment Manager. After working for two years, she decided to attend Texas Tech University to pursue her MBA in Entrepreneurship and Health Organization management as well as a MSBA in Healthcare Administration with a projected graduation of May 2011.

T he team of third-year law students Alexis Butler, Daniel Durell and Jason Jordan won the 2011 National Moot Court Competition championship on Feb. 3 in New York.

Butler also was named the nation’s Best Oral Advocate.

The National Moot Court Competition is the oldest, and most prestigious, moot court competition in the world.

In another national competition, third-year student Kate Cross was recently named the nation’s Best Advocate at the Andrews Kurth Moot Court National Championship Tournament, hosted by the University of Houston Law Center’s Blakely Advocacy Institute. This invitation-only competition featured the top 16 moot court programs in the country.

personal financial planning (PFP) students recently won the nationwide iOMe Challenge 2010. Participants wrote a 10,000-word essay about differences in today’s economy and the economy 40 years in the future. They also created a short video about retirement policy issues. The winning team, Ben Cummings, Chris Browning, Shaun Pfeiffer and Tom O’Malley , also were invited to Washington, D.C., to present their essay and video to members of Congress and other national policy-makers.

student George Laity has received a $5,000 fellowship from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (IEEE DEIS). Laity is one of only five doctoral students worldwide who received the award and a portion of the scholarship goes toward travel to an international IEEE conference. His research involves accurately measuring vacuum ultraviolet light.

Jess Lees , a senior microbiology major, and Zev Friedman , a math and computer science dual major, were chosen to attend Texas Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol, which highlights undergraduate research. Students went through an application process to be selected.

Lees’ research consists of studying metastasis of cancer cells, the spread of cells from the original tumor to a distant location in the body.

Friedman’s research is on the issues of data consistency related to web-service, such as an online shopping site which accesses services provided by different companies for credit card verification and charging, as well as shipping.

Amber Shipherd , a doctoral student in the Department of Health, Exercise and Sport Sciences, was accepted as a student regional representative for the Association of Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) for the South Central region that includes Texas, for a two-year term.
