Name Change

I’ve read with some confusion the articles and letters about the name change issue and the history of events leading up to the change to Texas Tech.

In the most recent Techsan magazine, March/April 2012, Judy Price Craft writes about being part of the peaceful demonstrations in 1963-64, and I thought I was losing my memory. I was a freshman in 1967 and distinctly remember being on campus when these demonstrations took place so I searched my old Texas Tech memorabilia box in my attic for old copies of the University Daily. Sure enough, the May 16, 1967, copy Volume 42 was in the collection and I’ve attached it. My memory hadn’t failed me.

I also found a copy of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal for May 11, 1970, when the tornado took off the roof of my rented house on Avenue X. I think I should keep it just in case a recollection of the date is changed in the future by another eyewitness.

Warren Nelson ’72 Houston, BBA Dear Editor, I see (that in volume 65, number 2) the issue has been raised once again about the use of the word “Tech” in the official name of the school. When I arrived at TTU in 1969 the name had just been changed, and debate rolled on about “Tech.” The point was raised in a lengthy article sometime in the ’70s.

At that time I wrote to the Techsan that I had heard rumors that one proposal for the new name was Furr University of Culture and Knowledge, in honor of a local family of importance. I was kind surprised to see the letter in print!!!

More About Sportsmanship

I have not attended a Texas Tech football game in over 30 years due to my distance from Tech along with my job responsibilities of working in the alumni and development offices of other universities. I was shocked to read about the student body booing visiting football teams as they entered the field.

When I was on the alumni staff at LSU from 1980-95, I was always embarrassed when LSU students and fans booed visiting teams. I thought, at the time, thank goodness that does not happen at my alma mater. Now I find out that it does. I feel embarrassed and ashamed. Do the booers think it makes the visiting teams play badly or boosts the Red Raiders’ spirit? It certainly did not this past season, that’s for sure.

I think Tech needs some type student organization that would promote a positive attitude among the student body, perhaps a “super” Saddle Tramp type group. I know that negative behavior was not displayed during my days at Tech, 1956-62. What a shame that it does now.

Losses for Texas Tech season for both the Red Raiders and the Lady Raiders was a tough one.

Billy Gillespie played with seven freshmen and only three returning players—and it showed. Most of the time, the effort was certainly there, but the experience was not.

The general consensus seems to be that he will recruit well and turn the program around. He is well liked and well respected. In almost every game, his team had periods where they were highly competitive but not consistent. The OU game was one where they played at a high level for the entire 40 minutes and showed some indication of things to come.

Kristy Curry had a very frustrating season. Her team was much improved this year but was also very inconsistent from one game to the next. They played Baylor as closely as any team in the Big 12, losing by eight points, then turned around and got blown out by Iowa State the next time out.

I’m sure Coach Curry had higher expectations for this team then they demonstrated. The team seems to lack that one impact player that can carry the team on her back when things get tough. Hopefully, we can find that player in the future.

As might be expected, attendance for both teams was lacking, especially from the student body. The presence of enthusiastic students can make such a difference in athletics, especially basketball. There is nothing more exciting than a packed house of students.

It is painful to watch games on TV and see the impact that students make in other arenas. Both Baylor and A&M have turned their programs around and their students have responded. I have never attended a game at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kan., but you can tell by watching that the atmosphere is electric.

I visited that facility this summer when I attended a meeting of the Big 12 Alumni Directors in Lawrence. They actually built a Hall of Fame or an athletic museum around the basketball arena. It was something to see.

The arena itself does not have the comfortable seats of many new arenas, such as the United Spirit Arena. It doesn’t appear that they have made many changes in the bench-type seating there in a number of years. But they fill it up for every game.

When I attended Texas Tech in the late 1950s and early 1960s, basketball was a lot more important to students at Tech than it seems to be today. Students filled the old Lubbock Municipal Coliseum for every game. You had to line up hours in advance outside the area to get good seats. After I graduated, it was almost impossible to get seats unless you knew someone who would loan you their seats for a game. All adult seats were sold out, and the students filled all the seats not sold to season ticket holders. I remember going over to the Municipal Auditorium to watch a closed circuit telecast of the game in the Coliseum.

One of the crazy things was that the enrollment then was only one-third of what it is today. The coliseum “officially” seatT he past basketball

ed 7,500 and there were many games where the crowd was in excess of 10,000. It may have been that there were fewer things to do for students in those days than today.

Today’s students will find this hard to believe, but if Tech had a basketball game on a Monday night, most of the fraternities would change their meeting to Tuesday night so their members could attend the game on time.

On the women’s side I know we would all like to return to the packed houses of the mid to late 1990s and on into the early 2000s. Those crowds provided the Lady Raiders with a tremendous home court advantage. Interestingly enough, those crowds did not depend on student turnout, which have typically been much lower for women than men. It was also an “area” crowd. People came from all over West Texas to support the Lady Raiders.

I think those days can return for both programs. Time will tell. lose Texas Tech icons.

Monty Davenport, Ph.D., former vice president of operations at Texas Tech, passed away in January. Prior to that he served as associate dean of engineering and associate vice president of plant services.

After graduating from Tech in 1957 with a degree in mechanical engineering, he became an instructor in the mechanical engineering department. In 1957, he was one of two Texans to receive an Atomic Energy Commission Fellowship in Nuclear Technology.

He received his master’s degree in nuclear energy and doctorate in mechanical engineering at Stanford University. He came back to Tech in 1966 to begin a 33-year career in teaching, research and administration. He retired in 1998.

Monty was very innovative and was widely respected across this campus. He provided strong leadership as Texas Tech began a period of incredible growth in its plant facilities. The well-run programs in building maintenance today are in large part because of his foresight and skill.

Margaret “Peg” Wilson, Ph.D., one of the “pioneers” in women’s athletics at Texas Tech, also passed away in January.

She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Arkansas and her doctorate from the University of Iowa. She joined the Department of Health and Physical Education at Texas Tech University staff in 1965. At Tech, she served as department chair from 1967-1976 and as coordinator of the Physical Education Division from 1976-1986.

Peg worked with the late Jeannine McHaney to obtain equal resources for women athletes. She used to say that she lost many battles but helped win the war. She never missed a Lady Raider game and was a frequent traveler to NCAA playoff games.

If you did not want to know her opinion on women’s athletics, then it would probably be a good idea not to ask because she definitely had an opinion and would openly share it with anyone who asked. She retired in 1990.

Petroleum Engineering Facility: A New Era in Production & Operations Education

he Texas Tech University Bob L. Herd Department of Petroleum Engineering is a little more than halfway toward its goal for a new building, and the timing couldn’t be better. Engineering enrollment is up 46 percent over the last five years, with more than 5,200 future engineers in the classrooms. The central engineering buildings were constructed in the 1920s and are filled to capacity.

The new, $20 million building will represent a new era in petroleum education because it is large enough to include both production and operational programs, for which the area Texas Tech graduates are best known in the oil and gas industry.

The facility also will be transparent in the sense that its inner functions—from the HVAC system to the electrical panels to the plumbing grid—are easily accessible, making it possible for engineering students to learn how the building works from the inside out. Laboratories will be state-of-the art and centered around today’s petroleum oil production techniques. Using a hands-on teaching approach, the program will cover the entire spectrum of exploration and production.

Business profitability analysis will be an important part of the curriculum. Such an integrated laboratory concept is a direct response to industry demands in the ever-changing energy environment.

People On Jan. 24 Gov. Rick Perry announced his appointment of John Walker to the Board of Regents for the Texas Tech University System. Walker, of Houston, was appointed to replace Regent John Huffaker,

from Amarillo. Walker will serve a term extending until Jan. 31, 2015. Walker serves as a member of the Texas Tech Foundation Board as well as an advisory board member of the Texas Tech University Rawls College of Business. Walker holds his bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech and a master of business administration from New York University.

Texas Tech University’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources recognized six distinguished alumni Feb. 20 during its 32nd annual Distinguished and Young Alumni Awards reception and dinner. One alumnus from each of the college’s departments is selected

to receive the awards. The award recipients this year were: Kirk Thomas for the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics.

Thomas graduated magna cum laude in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics. He continued his education in 1982 earning a master’s degree in finance from Tech. A native of Lubbock County, Thomas has cultivated a tremendous career in the banking industry. Specializing in agriculture, commodity, and agribusiness lending, he has served as a vice president, senior vice president, and executive vice president for a number of banks in Lubbock. Currently Thomas serves as president of Lone Star State Bank in Lubbock. He also serves on the bank’s board of directors.

Erin Harold was named Texas Tech University’s new Pom Squad coach effective April 2. Harold

comes for West Virginia University.

Harold graduated from WVU with a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology and also an A.C.E. Certified Personal Trainer. Harold was a two-year member of the WVU dance team and coached for three years, earning two consecutive National Dance Alliance collegiate national championships. She has been a highly sought-after teacher and choreographer in the tri-state area of West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Chris Skaggs, ph.d. for the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications. Skaggs received a bachelor’s degree in both agricultural education and animal science in 1982.

He then went on to obtain a master’s degree in animal science from Kansas State University in 1984, and received a doctorate in animal science from Iowa State University in 1992. Skaggs is currently the associate dean for student development for the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at Texas A&M University.

He is also a professor and holds the San Antonio Livestock Exposition Chair in Animal Science.

Dean Hawkins, ph.d. for the Department of Animal and Food Sciences. After receiving an associate’s degree from Clarendon College, Hawkins graduated with a bachelor’s degree in animal science and a teaching certificate in agricultural education in 1984. He continued his education obtaining a master’s degree in animal breeding from Tech in 1986, and a doctoral degree in physiology of reproduction and growth at Texas A&M University in 1990. Hawkins joined the faculty of West Texas A&M University in 2009, where he is currently a professor and department head for the Department of Agricultural Sciences. He

John Huffaker, former member of the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents, was named vice chancellor and general counsel in February. Huffaker will provide

legal council to Texas Tech University System and its component institutions, coordinate institutional compliance and oversee legal teams at each university. He replaced Pat Campbell, who stayed to assist Huffaker through a transition period ending March 31, following a 30-year career with TTUS and Texas Tech. Huffaker earned his bachelor’s degree in agriculture from Texas Tech in 1970 and a law degree from Texas Tech’s School of Law in 1974.

Dewey Shroyer for the Department of Landscape Architecture. A native of South Texas, Shroyer graduated from Tech with a bachelor’s degree in 1966 and a master’s degree in 1973, both in park administration. Upon graduation, Shroyer began a four-decade career with the Department of Grounds Maintenance at Texas Tech. He worked as a supervisor, superintendent, acting director, and finally managing director until his retirement in 2008. During his 41 years of service, he worked under 11 university presidents, three interim presidents, three chancellors, and one interim chancellor.

Under his watch, the department was responsible for more than 2,261 square acres of land, including the main campus and 10 separate sites statewide.

Shroyer has been a registered landscape architect with the State of Texas since 1971.

David Wester, ph.d. for the Department of Natural Resources Management. Wester was born in Denver, Colo., and graduated cum laude from Colorado State University in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in range and forest management. He graduated from Texas Tech with a master’s degree in 1979 and a doctoral degree in 1984, both in range science. After graduation, Wester spent 28 years on faculty in the Department of Natural Resources Management, where he taught courses in range, forest, and wetland plant identification; Synecology; and experimental designs and analysis. He moved to Texas A&M University–Kingsville in 2011, where

he currently works as a professor and research scientist in the Department of Animal, Rangeland, and Wildlife Sciences and Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute.

Larry Richardson for the Department of Plant and Soil Science. Richardson is a native of Vega, Texas. He graduated in 1981 with a bachelor of science in agronomy. Following graduation, he became the research and production manager for his father’s company, Richardson Seeds, in Vega. He started the first research and breeding program for the company. Richardson was named president of Richardson Seeds in 1992. He currently oversees all operational aspects of the company, including the expansion of sales, both domestic and international, as well as the automation of the plant facilities. He is also the president of MMR Genetics, a sorghum breeding company. In 2010, he and the company established the Richardson Seeds Scholarship Endowment in Agricultural Communications in the college.

The Young Alumni Award is presented in conjunction with the Distinguished Alumni Awards. It is given to an individual who graduated from the college within the last 15 years and has attained a high level of professional accomplishment and standards of integrity and character to positively reflect and enhance the prestige of the college and the industries of agriculture and natural resources.

Ginger Light, ph.d. received her doctorate in agronomy in 1999.

Following graduation, Light was employed with Tech’s Department of Plant and Soil Science as an instructor and researcher. She began teaching courses in crop science, horticulture and entomology in 2002. She was instrumental in teaching and developing several online and distance education courses and contributed to departmental recruiting efforts. She was hired by Bayer CropScience in 2009 and worked as their Global Cotton QMS Manager, responsible for quality assurance within the organization and traveling to more than 10 countries. In 2011, Light was promoted to Physical Traits Development Manager within the company.

Archie Pitsilides, the director of Grants and Outreach for Texas Tech University’s Rawls College of Business, recently returned from a Fulbright International Education Administrator program in Germany. The month-long seminar provided participants with an overview of

the higher education structures in the European Union and Germany. Seminar events allowed for the exchange of the best practices among German and U.S. university administrators. With Pitsilides’ newly acquired skills, he said he will help strengthen Texas Tech’s current international partnership and will assist in developing new ones.

News Military Veteran’s Program has allowed the college to be named a premier military friendly institution. The program is intended to ensure student veterans and their families achieve academic and personal success by providing a primary point of contact for them on campus.

T exas T ech University set a new record for enrollment during the spring 2012 semester with 30,102 students.

The previous spring enrollment record of 29,604 students was set in 2011.

Undergraduate enrollment increased to 24,133 students, up from 23,550 students a year ago while the law school experienced an increase to 688 students, up 38 from last year.

College of Education, in collaboration with the South Plains Closing the Gaps P-20 Council, was awarded a $200,000 grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The grant will fund outreach activities to promote a collegegoing culture in the region. The College of Education Project FUTURE program serves sixth through 12th-grade students and provides an opportunity for them to learn about college and consider a career as an educator. Program administrators say the grant will improve the academic achievement and graduation attainment of underserved populations in the region. The grant will work with 13 partnering school districts that represent 70 percent of the total student population in the region. The grant will also allow work-study interns to conduct on-site mentoring series at 16 area high schools. The interns will assist students and parents with college preparedness by using the statewide resources of the Generation Texas campaign. The grant will provide $50,000 in scholarships to first-year college students and Texas Tech will match the scholarships.

Researchers in the Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences were part of a study, along with seven other research entities, involving the highly endangered Cuban crocodiles . The scientists discovered genetic pollution within

the Cuban crocodile species because of three things.

One, zoological institutions sometimes house the Cuban and American crocodiles together, and if the animals are of similar size, age and sex, they hybridize in captivity. Two, in the wild there are only a few places the two species’ habitats occur symmetrically— Cuban crocs inhabit a small area of land in Cuba’s Zapata Swamp— humans disturbed the habitat by cutting channels into the Zapata Swamp to allow humans easier access to the ocean. Consequently, this change provided a freeway for these two species to move

around easily from habitat to habitat. Three, historically the species was known to interbreed when the Cuban and American crocs both inhabited the Greater Antilles, but that is no longer an issue since there are no longer Cuban crocs in that region.

The result is that the Cuban croc, the most terrestrial species of crocodile on the planet, is commonly interbreeding in the wild with its American cousin and creating viable hybrids. According to researchers, if left unchecked, the hybrids could take over, and the pure Cuban species could vanish forever.

Texas Tech University’s Student Government Association approved the incorporation of a bus into the SafeRide system to encourage more students to use the service. The bus is available to any Texas Tech student with a valid student ID and runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.

The program will facilitate all of the apartment complexes within the Overton area adjacent to Texas Tech. The approximate route will be 24 minutes. If successful, the program will expand to include every apartment complex that utilizes the bus service during regular hours of operation.

The bus will run when school is in session, including the summer months.

The New Jerry S. Rawls College of Business Administration Building

Alumni returning to campus this year will be awed by the newest completed construction project—the Jerry S. Rawls College of Business Administration Building. The 148,790-square-foot, three-story structure graces the north side of campus, near the Marsha Sharp Freeway.

True to the traditional Spanish Renaissance design of the campus, the exterior of the building resembles structures on campus. However, the interior of the building is unlike any other.

“We had heard some statistics that said when new students come to a campus, 66 percent of the time, they want to know the building where they think their major is going to be housed and how much the university has put into valuing that whole process,” says Allen McInnes, Ph.D., dean of the college.

The vision for the new building began in the early 2000s. The project itself began April 1, 2002, and was completed Nov. 22, 2011, just in time for the Spring 2012 semester.

McInnes and others took advantage of the time to consider every element that went into the $70 million structure.

“I wanted to make sure that what we were going to build was not something that was going to be out-ofdate the minute we opened the doors,” McInnes says.

“So, we spent a lot of time looking at technology and where we thought that might be five years from now.

With changing technology in today’s world, we don’t really need a computer lab.

“The other thing I wanted to make sure of was that we had good connectivity, an outside source, if you will, for power and communications.

“From a technology standpoint, we really wanted to not stay ahead but stay in front of the game, actually.”

Classrooms and Centers The building’s design contributes to the efficiency and comfort of learning. The building signage is digital so that it can be modified easily. Outside the entrance to each classroom is a small screen that can be programmed to include room numbers and information about the classes or groups that meet there.

“Business students in all majors throughout the college will benefit from the educational value of the building’s amenities,” says Michael S. Molina, AIA, vice chancellor for facilities, planning and construction. “The college’s previous building provided fixed seats and tables for students, while the college’s new facility offers tables and chairs that move and white boards on the walls for students to incorporate when making presentations.

“The technology in the classrooms is state-of-the-art and provides access to many valuable tools. Mediasite, which is the leading webcasting platform that captures class instruction, is in every classroom, and students enrolled in classes have the ability to review lectures and course material outside of class. Every room is equipped with personal response system recorders. Students answer questions using clickers or smartphones and their answers are captured and stored electronically, an excellent way to actively involve students and promote the learning experience. In addition to the classrooms, technology is available in common areas of the 148,790 square foot facility.”

The college has several departments that provide services to help students prepare for life after college. The International Business Education Resource Center assists in planning study abroad. The Career Management Center is a link to employers, and the Georgie E. Snyder Communications Skills Center assists students in honing their interpersonal abilities. These centers are located on the first floor.

The Student Managed Investment Fund, known as SMIF, allows students to manage $2 million in a real-world setting. The center has a stock market ticker and Bloomberg terminals. They currently manage 40 stocks. may/june 2012 T E C H S A N «

Creature Comforts Collaboration is encouraged among students and faculty members alike, and not surprisingly, the building accommodates it. There are a number of breakout rooms for meetings, as well as open spaces.

“If you went into our other building, the students had no place to sit at all outside of the classroom,” McInnes says. “They were sitting on the floors and all that business. I had been to a number of buildings where you walked in and it was a lounge area.”

Just inside the main entrance to the building is such an area. The space also features a fireplace along one wall, creating a cozy gathering spot. McInnes says he envisions that students and faculty members can meet there for informal coffee time. Other potential meeting areas are lower-level courtyards.

In the old building, each department in the college was housed on a different floor.

“I had a conversation with one of the faculty members this morning, and I said, ‘How do you like being on the same floor?’”

McInnes says. “He said he loves it and that we have more collegiality, it’s a lot easier to talk to one another and that it’s just terrific.”

Food stations throughout the building, including Einstein Bros. Bagels, add to the comfortable atmosphere. There are also refrigerators so that students can bring their own meals.

Green Building “The building is the first LEED-certified building on campus,” Molina says. “LEED stands for Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design. The building saves 20 percent of energy and 23 percent of energy costs, as well as 47 percent of water usage for a like-sized building not built to LEED standards.

This is the first project on the Texas Tech Campus within the Texas Tech University System, which will achieve LEED certification of any level. The design will also result in a reduction of operating expenses, as compared to other academic buildings on campus.

“The incorporated environmental design and cutting-edge technology will provide the most benefit to the college with lower life cycle and operating costs, which ultimately redirects funds to the enrichment of academic quality. The Rawls College of Business Administration building is the benchmark for all future design and construction on our campuses.”

The Places You’ll G Bitten

Tyler Ince ’99 is a West Texan through and through. He was raised in Lubbock, attended Monterey High School, where he was a member of the golf team, and then attended Texas Tech.

But during his junior year at Tech, in 1997, he experienced a life-changing opportunity that foretold of a future far different from his roots.

“I moved to New York City for the summer to work for a travel company,” says Ince, who received his bachelor’s of business administration in general business international. “I fell in love with the city, just everything about it.”

He spent the following summer in New York City as well, and post-graduation, he moved there for good (well, sort of) following a six-week trip to Europe. With a voracious appetite for knowledge, Ince proceeded to learn everything he could about the city in his free time.

“I am a card-carrying tour guide (for New York City),” says Ince. “I worked in operations and public relations for the tour company, and in my free time I learned about the city by reading a ton. I took the test basically on a dare at the urging of a friend. I wanted to take it to see how much I needed to study and I passed it the first time.”

He immersed himself in the cultural buffet that is New York.

The city’s frenetic pace, the diverse cuisine—Ince, although trim, says his favorite part of traveling is eating— its extraordinary architecture and dynamic business atmosphere flipped a switch in young Ince—he wanted to see the world.

After living in New York for three years, Ince moved to South Carolina in 2002, where he earned an International MBA from the University of South Carolina in 2004. Part of the appeal of the degree program at South Carolina was that it allowed students to work abroad six months to learn a second language. Ince chose to work in Mexico City for Turner International, where he marketed the No. 1 cable channel in Latin America. Prior to enrolling in grad school, he completed intensive Spanish courses, and by the time he completed his internship in Mexico, he was fluent in Spanish.

In 2005, Ince accepted a position with Royal Caribbean International—he credits Tech alum Allan Herring ’92, who worked for RCI, for helping him get his foot in the door. As a marketing and revenue manager for Royal Caribbean International, he manages all onboard revenue including: gaming, retail products, services and tours. Ince started out working on the company’s smallest ship and worked his way up to the world’s largest cruise ship, the Allure of the Sea, which cruises the Caribbean.

He supervises almost 200 staff who hail from more than 40 countries.

“I also lived in Finland for a few months each of the last three years to assist with the construction and planning of RCI’s newest and largest cruise ships in the world,” Ince says.

“Working on the Newbuild (what RCI calls the planning and construction phase of their new cruise ships) in Finland was a big part of my life.”

The position has been an outrageously perfect fit: he spends four months on the ship, and then has two months off. He spends more time in the ocean than he does on land, and the unusual schedule has allowed him to travel to more than 70 countries, hit a golf ball on all seven continents, and partake in activities that most people see only on the Travel Channel.

His globe-trotting began while he was living in New York. While at Texas Tech, Ince gained three friends who became the brothers he never had: Steve Richardson, M.D., who played baseball from 19962000; Shane Wright, who played baseball from 19971999; and Mark Austry, who played baseball from 1998-2000. The four were devoted to the game of golf, and were determined to travel to Scotland, the birthplace of the sport, and hit the links. They dubbed themselves “Four Gorsemen,” a take-off on the “Four Horsemen,” gorse being a bush native to Scotland. (See sidebar on page 23 for more information on “gorse.”)

“So the Four Gorsemen planned to meet up once a year, and every five to seven years we planned a big trip overseas,” Ince says. “With Scotland and Ireland

Scotland’s Thorny Shrub: Gorse The gorse bush is native to Scotland and is frequently found along the greens of the verdant land surrounding the golf courses. A thorny evergreen bush with profuse yellow flowers, it’s also a hardy shrub. The gorse has adapted to withstand drought and fire, and its seed pods are actually opened by fire, so that fire can actually result in the plant’s proliferation. Even when burned down the stump, the plant can regenerate, sprouting new growth from the roots.

Little did the Four Gorsemen know their selection of a name would be so prophetic—that their friendship would have to withstand the fire of tragedy. Like the gorse bush, they have survived fire.

under our belts, England, Australia and South Africa were the big fish we had left.

In the States we were due for the Robert Trent Jones Trail, Arizona, the relatively new Old Macdonald and a rematch at Pacific Dunes. Not to mention return trips to Ireland and Scotland because we left some stones unturned. We planned on doing this until we were 80, and we often spoke about it. We spoke about how great it will be to live as ‘Gorsemen,’ always finding a new challenge. With us spread across the U.S. and the globe, that really didn’t matter, we knew where our hearts were and ultimately where our loyalties lay. We looked forward to our families growing up together. We looked forward to our ‘next trip.’”

The four booked a trip to Scotland Sept. 18, 2001, just seven days following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. The young men went back and forth about whether or not to travel, whether it was unpatriotic, whether it was safe, and ultimately, they chose to go.

They hop-scotched around the country, playing the breathtaking golf courses.

They made no hotel reservations, stayed in little B&Bs and soaked up the thrill of playing the game they loved in Scotland. Not only had they realized a dream, they felt they were given a gift because they experienced it together.

“We went (all over the country and) into the Highlands, and everywhere we went we were asked if we planned to go to the University of St. Andrews, where Prince William was,” says Richardson, one of the Four Gorsemen. “We ended up going and were in a pub and he (Prince William) was there, too! He ended up coming to visit with us, we talked for a few minutes, he wondered what we were doing there. He was impressed that we’d come all the way to Scotland to play golf.”

Ince’s trip to Scotland, it seems, set before him an endless path for travel and exploration. From there it was his advanced degree in South Carolina, working in Mexico and ultimately landing a job that made world travel possible.

His time on the ship has allowed him to mingle with celebrities such as country music superstar Taylor Swift; professional baseball player Iván “Pudge” Rodriguez (with whom he’s played golf); actor Antonio Banderas and actress Salma Hayek, who were on the Allure of the Seas for the world premiere of the DreamWorks film “Puss in Boots”; Brazilian native, Miami-based pop artist Romero Britto and countless other famous folks.

“Romero and I attended a high-profile Halloween party in Miami,” Ince says. “And because of that connection, I was introduced to Elin Nordegren, Tiger Wood’s exwife, by Prince Albert of Monaco.”

The “Today Show” and “Good Morning America” have filmed episodes onboard RCI’s Oasis and Allure. Adam Sandler’s recent film, “Jack & Jill,” was filmed on his ship.

“The cast and crew lived on the Allure for 11 days filming that movie,” Ince notes.

“Jenny McCarthy also was onboard a week doing a short film for RCI with James Brolin and Dean Cain. I had the chance to meet them all.” may/june 2012 T E C H S A N «

While they lived in different places, the Four Gorsemen remained close. They were all pursuing their careers, including Austry, who, in addition to a full-time job, was also moving up in the golfing world.

“Mark qualified for the British Amateur,” notes Ince. “He was a great golfer and won his club championship six times in a row. He would get up and play 18 holes before breakfast.”

Austry was in the best shape of his life, no small feat for a lifetime athlete. His three friends enjoyed watching his star rise. They knew if he wanted it to happen, he was determined enough to see success.

So it came as a life-altering shock to Ince, Wright and Richardson when they heard that their friend died suddenly after running a half-marathon with his brother on March 14, 2010. The cause of death was myocarditis, an infection of the heart caused by a virus. Most people are never aware they have it, but it’s the third most common cause of unexpected death in young people.

“I was home in Nashville for a friend’s wedding,” says Richardson.

“Mark called and talked to me on Friday night, we had a brief visit. I was having lunch on the following Sunday when I got the news.”

Ince was aboard ship when he learned of his friend’s death. Wright recalls his friendship with the former Red Raider baseball standout.

“Mark was friends with everyone,” Wright says. “We were friends in college, but brothers after college. We talked three times a day.

When my mom died in 2001 of leukemia, Mark begged me to move in with him and his parents so I didn’t have to be alone, and I did.”

Austry left behind his wife, Mariana Alvarez Austry, and their two daughters, who at the time were 1 and 3. Ince, Wright and Richardson promised Mariana they would do everything they could to help her raise her two children. Richardson sees Mariana and her daughters almost every week since he is still living in Dallas near them. He also plays golf monthly with Austry’s father. The three men have maintained a close friendship with Austry’s widow and his daughters.

“Tyler, Shane and Steve are a part of Mark,” says Mariana. “Their friendship was unlike any I have ever seen. It was a bond that developed from a dream—traveling to Scotland together and playing golf.

Later, they dreamt of playing the best courses in the world—and once Mark and Shane got married, taking their families with them to those courses! The stories those gentlemen have of Mark capture Mark so well. Their friendship means the world to me, especially for my daughters because they will get to know so much of Mark through them.”

Shortly after Austry’s death, Ince, Wright and Richardson began to plan a trip back to Scotland to honor him. Their plan was realized Sept. 1927, 2011, when 19 men travelled to Scotland to play several courses in homage of Austry. They held a memorial service at North Berwick, a golf course in a small coastal Scottish village, Austry’s favorite course.

“North Berwick is not a British Open course,” Ince says. “It’s not one of the must-play courses.

But, for some reason, the four of us fell in love with that course back in 2001. Although it is still highly-ranked and regarded as a fine course, since it doesn’t host an open, most Americans don’t know about it. That, and the village is quaint and a perfect slice of Scottish life. It has tons of character and was so much fun playing it. One of the par threes is one of the most famous in the world, The Redan. But one hole, No. 13, is called “The Pit.” It is a short dogleg left, and the green is not very deep, but rests just behind a stone wall that was there for centuries. The coast is on the left side of the hole and you can hear the spray of the ocean and seagulls the whole time.

“We chose that particular hole because it was Mark’s escape from any bad situation in the real world. If he was having a bad day, this hole was the one he dreamed of, sort of as an escape—to get away.”

The group of 19 included brothers and fathers of the Four Gorsemen and a few friends. The trip was painful yet cathartic, and absolutely unforgettable.

Unquenchable Thirst

Ince often says “carpe diem.” After the tragedy of losing his close friend, he took that Latin phrase from one of Horace’s poems to heart.

His quest to see as much of the world as possible was reinforced. And although he has seen more of the world in the last decade than 20 people will see in a lifetime, he is not arrogant or obnoxious. Rather, it’s delightful to hear about his travels and escapades. It’s impossible not to be intrigued by someone who’s been all over the globe and says he’s far from finished with his travels.

As darkness descends upon a small Peruvian village, a rare site

reveals itself: light. Through the World Energy Project, an internship and service learning class sponsored by the Department of Energy Commerce at Texas Tech, the gift of illumination is life-altering for people “off the grid.”

Terry McInturff, Ph.D., professor of practice and director of academics from Rawls College of Business, is also the creator of the WEP. According to McInturff, Tech is the only business school in America that has full-time faculty dedicated to teaching the energy business. His idea of providing solar home lighting systems to communities where traditional electricity isn’t available required almost four years of planning before it was officially launched.

The installation sites were reached by banana boat, a 20-mile bus ride and finally, a 15-to 45-minute hike to individual residencies.

In August 2011, the group went to Peru, where they have decided to make their “home base.” Because of the excitement generated by students ready to make an impact in Third World countries, two trips to Peru have been arranged for Summer 2012.

A vital part of the project’s success comes from its partnership with a Canadian organization called Light Up The World, an institute dedicated to illuminating the lives of the poor in third world countries. Light Up The World is responsible for coordinating logistics of the missions for WEP. The partnership almost didn’t exist though; LUTW was leery about allowing students to participate in missions. Typically, LUTW schedules and completes its own missions without the assistance of an outside group. However, after talking with McInturff, LUTW agreed to allow energy commerce students from Texas Tech to participate in the missions.

“If it weren’t for Light Up The World, we wouldn’t be able to do this,” said McInturff. “They’re the professionals, they’re full-time, and fortunately, they liked our Tech kids because Tech kids work hard and don’t mind rolling up their sleeves and sleeping in the dirt.”

Their days are long and the experiences they encounter are numerous. From eating guinea pig to playing soccer with the village children, students on the mission experience life exactly as those in the villages live it.

Students participating in WEP are required to pay $2,500 to cover travel costs. McInturff realized that not every student could afford this amount, so a fundraising program was established for those who are not financially able to go on missions.

“With the World Energy Project, we want all students to have a chance at doing it,” said McInturff.

Energy commerce students have the option to sell solar panels to an individual or business for $200 each, and a name chosen by the patron is engraved onto the solar panel. Pictures of the student installing the unit with the recipient family are taken and brought back to the sponsor.

McInturff understands the importance of real world experience for his students, and he believes it is vital they realize “how good they have it before they begin working within the industry.” For one student, Becca Meche, a senior energy commerce major, the trip was life altering.

Meche initially planned to start her full-time job in June, but opted to put her career on hold in order to participate in another mission to Peru in June. Her first trip to Peru was an eye-opening experience, and she is now more aware of the simple things she used to take for granted.

“Not only do you learn about the solar panels but you learn about their culture and about how much two or three light bulbs and a radio can change their lives,” Meche said. may/june 2012 T E C H S A N «

The panels provide about eight hours of light, and residents of the villages

are provided a fighting chance to get out of poverty. With the availability of light after the sun sets, villagers whose days would typically end at dark can now work or study because of the illumination provided by the solar panels.

“You don’t get out of financial poverty until you get out of energy poverty,” McInturff said. “If you don’t have enough energy for the basics, you aren’t going to go anywhere” For LUTW and the WEP, these projects are all about sustainability. WEP raises $50,000 from businesses each year in order to purchase the solar panels and equipment necessary to install the units on homes. Then, through a microfinance institution developed by students at Texas Tech, recipients of solar panels make payments over 16-18 months. However, the money from the payments stays within the village, with the hope that it will recirculate throughout the community and others will be able to purchase units. The accumulated interest from the payments goes toward paying those working to collect the money and to the people certified to repair the solar panels.

“That’s what is so great about the sustainability of the microfinance,” McInturff said. “It’s sustainable and it grows; they’re able to re-lend money to other people.”

During the mission last year, McInturff and the students were able to go to a village

in Costa Rica that had been part of a mission two years before. They were met with thankfulness and praise. People who had once spent 35-40 percent of their income on kerosene candles that provided minimal lighting now only put 25 percent of their yearly earnings toward the use of clean energy.

The units were still being utilized and were in working condition. McInturff recalled a story of a woman who couldn’t see her son because he lived so far away; she now has a cell phone because of the outlet installed on her solar unit, and she talks to her son daily.

For those involved with the missions, it’s stories of resiliency and success that keep them coming back for more. The World Energy Project isn’t just about educational service learning, it goes beyond the classroom and has a lasting effect on the lives of people thousands of miles away from the luxuries Americans take for granted.

Changes at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park

M any high school-aged baseball players tell the same stories of being recruited. While scholarship offers, potential playing time and locker rooms are flashed in front of them, one factor seems to go unnoticed by many, the opportunity to play in a park that provides the ideal baseball atmosphere.

Texas Tech’s home baseball stadium had the potential to be that park. With beautiful West Texas days setting the stage, the only thing lacking was the perfect facilities to complete the baseball scene.

Freshman outfielder Zach Reding, only one year removed from making the decision of where he would play, knew what his answer would be when told that a $5 million renovation was in the works for the Texas Tech baseball facilities.

“They had wonderful facilities,” Reding said. “Then with the promise of a $5 million renovation made it a lot easier to make a good decision on where I wanted to play baseball.”

Rip Griffin Park, complete with a grand new entrance featuring a brick inlayed Double T, is now listed with the best ballparks in the Big 12.

“It just feels like a good place to play,” Reding said. “I have been to A&M, UT and Baylor, and this matches all of them.”

The newly renovated Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park provides the setting for the home field advantage players dream of.

With chair-back seats installed, pristine new suites, and an almost non-existent tension backstop net, the Texas Tech baseball team is primed for one of the best seasons yet.

Reding, aware of what is at stake for a highly talented team with a beautifully renovated park to play in, remains focused on the task at hand: winning.

“It feels nice to be the first to come through and play on it,” Reding said. “Hopefully we do something good with it.”

Shane Broyles, a transfer from Seminole State College, also recognized the importance of having nice facilities to play in.

“It is a big deal because this is where you are going to play all your games,” the righty said. “And this is your home, so you want a nice one.”

Broyles noted how the atmosphere for the baseball fans that the team hopes to draw has now changed.

Along with the new entrance, suites and press box, the renovations also included bringing the seats directly behind home plate closer to the action, with fans sitting only feet away from both the home and visiting dugouts.

“I think it will make a lot more fans come out,” Broyles said. “They will be a lot closer to the game, and it will be a good atmosphere.”

For returners such as right-handed pitcher Trey Masek, the upgrades to Rip Griffin Park will hopefully mean a full crowd once again building up the atmosphere.

sports « “The stadium looks really good and is obviously a lot better than last year,” Masek said. “Obviously, the chair-back seats are a good addition and the suites, the area that the coach’s offices are in and the press box area looks really nice.

Masek is also aware that the effects the stadium renovations have on attendance are just as important as effects on recruiting.

“Hopefully, it will bring new people to come watch us and also bring in a different crowd. Also for recruiting purposes, it will get other kids to come out and come see what kind of park we have.”

However, the renovations to Rip Griffin Park involved more than upgrading the seating and appearance. Included in the plan was the addition of a club level, something that is unique to college baseball stadiums across the country.

Head coach Dan Spencer took note of the rarity of the club level and how it adds to the atmosphere that is primed for opening day.

With unobstructed views provided in the stands with the installation of the tension backstop net and the comfort of a club level, there is something for every type of baseball fan at Rip Griffin Park.

“We got rid of the poles in the backstop and we have real suites now, that you can call suites,” Spencer said. “The club level is also unique to college baseball, all of it is good and it’s all really fan friendly.”

Although the renovations have been in the works for years, the reality of having new surroundings has taken longer to set in.

However, with the completion of Rip Griffin Park, the team is excited to compete there.

“It hadn’t really set in,” Spencer said, “but for our guys to come back after the break and get to play in it, practice in it and understand that it’s going to be finished—it’s exciting.”

Gil Roberts Wins at Championship

Tex as Tech Athletic Media Relations

T exas T ech senior sprinter Gil Roberts won the 400-meter dash at the 2012 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., in February. Roberts, who will compete for Texas Tech during the outdoor season, tied a personal-best time by running a 45.39 in the finals of the dash.

His time of 45.39 in the event currently ranks second in the world this year.

Roberts will now represent the United States and compete at the World Indoor Track and Field Championships set in Istanbul, Turkey, in March.

It marks Roberts’ second appearance at the World Championships, as he represented the U.S. in 2009 at the World Outdoor Championships after finishing second at the U.S. Outdoor Championships.

During the 2009 outdoor season, Roberts won the Big 12 400 meters with a school record time of 44.86 before winning the Midwest Regional with a time of 45.71. Roberts was a member of the 2009 All-American indoor 4x400 relay team and was the 2009 indoor NCAA runner-up and Big 12 Champion in the 400 meter.

During his prep years, Roberts was a five-time national champion, including a Nike Outdoor national championship.

The past year was a very successful one for the Texas Tech Alumni Association. It was also a year of new beginnings for the association.

In a comprehensive effort aimed at focusing the Alumni Association’s goals for the next few years, the Alumni Association National Board of Directors and association staff developed a strategic plan for the organization.

Last summer, we welcomed the Texas Tech Osher Lifelong Learning Institute under the Alumni Association umbrella of programming.

Alumni Association Awards Distinguished Alumni Awards The Texas Tech Alumni Association honored Brig. Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr.; Larry R. Byrd; Michael L. Gilbert, Ph.D. and Kirk Lewis, Ed.D. as its 2011 Distinguished Alumni.

Brig. Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr., is the deputy director, operations, U.S. Central Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla. He has served in the United States Air Force for 26 years.

Brown graduated in 1984 from Texas Tech University as a distinguished graduate of Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He graduated from 1991 USAF Fighter Weapons School, Nellis AFB, Nev., in 1991, and from Squadron Officer School, Maxwell AFB, Ala., in 1992. He earned his 1994 Master of Aeronautical Science degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, Fla., in 1994. Brown was a 1997 Distinguished Graduate, Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell AFB, Ala. In 2000, he graduated from Air War College, Maxwell AFB, Ala., and in 2004, he was a National Defense Fellow at the Institute for Defense Analyses, Alexandria,Va. He has held various squadron and wing level positions during operational assignments to include instructing in the F-16 Division, U.S. Air Force Weapons School. His staff tours include Aide-de-Camp to the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Air Operations Officer, U.S. Central Command; Deputy Chief, Program Integration Division, Directorate of Programs; and later Director, Secretary of the Air Force and Chief of Staff Executive Action Group, Headquarters, U.S. Air Force. Brown has served as a fighter squadron commander, Commandant of the United States Air Force Weapons School, National Defense Fellow at the Institute for Defense Analyses, and Commander, 8th Fighter Wing. Prior to his current assignment, General Brown was the Commander, 31st Fighter Wing, Aviano Air Base, Italy.

Brown is a command pilot with more than 2,850 flying hours, including 85 combat hours. Aircraft he has flown include F-16A/B/C/D, AC-130U, AH-64, AT-38, B-1B, B-2A, B-52H, HH-60G, T-37 and T-38.

He and his wife, Sharene, have two sons, Sean and Ross.

A native of Brownsville, Texas, Larry R. Byrd is president and partner of All-Plastics Molding, Inc., an Addison, Texas-based company that produces custom plastic molded parts for a variety of industrial customers.

Byrd studied industrial engineering at Texas Tech and was a member of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers and a member of the Engineering Dean’s List. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1957. He served as president of the Junior Class. Byrd was Distinguished AFROTC Cadet in 1957 and then Distinguished Military Graduate. He was a Cadet Colonel in the Tech AFROTC. After graduating from Texas Tech, Byrd entered the United States Air Force as a 2nd lieutenant aircraft maintenance officer for the 343rd Fighter-Group ADC. He attained the rank of captain.

Byrd completed his military training and began working in engineering design for EIM Controls, Inc., in Houston. After a year, he joined Exxon/Mobil Corp. USA and began a 15-year career with engineering and managerial assignments. He has been with All-Plastics Molding, Inc., since 1974.

Byrd also has been a director and executive committee member of North Dallas Bank and Trust Co. since 1978. He has served as president and a board member of the Addison Business Association.

He is a Registered Texas Professional Engineer and received the Texas Industrial Engineering Lifetime Achievement Award from The Institute of Industrial Engineers in August 2010. Byrd was a charter member of the Texas Tech University Engineering Dean’s Council (1995) and continues to serve on it. He was president of the Texas Tech Alumni Association in 1982. He was named a Distinguished Engineer of Texas Tech that same year.

He also was the graduation speaker for the “Order of the Engineer-Iron Ring Ceremony” at Texas Tech.

Byrd has been married for 53 years to Patricia Ann, and they have two married daughters, Deborah Lynn Price and Julie Ann Brigman, and four grandchildren.

Michael L. Gilbert, Ph.D., is vice president of Bayer CropScience, president of Bayer Cotton Seed International and global head of plant breeding and trait development.

Gilbert earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics in 1980 from Texas Tech. He graduated with a master’s degree in agriculture in 1986 from West Texas A&M. He earned a doctorate in agronomy in 1989 from Texas Tech.

After college, Gilbert worked as a plant breeder and global breeding manager for Cargill, Inc., from 1981 to 1989. Since 1989, he has worked at Bayer CropScience. As president and general manager of Bayer Cotton Seed International, he develops and manages cotton business, including sales, marketing, supply chain and research and development.

His professional affiliations include serving as past president and board member of the Sorghum Improvement Conference of North America and past

Alumni Association Awards board member of the Texas Seed Trade Association. He is a member of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America and American Seed Trade Association. Gilbert is crop science representative and member of the editorial board of Plant Breeding Reviews. He has served on the USDA Crop Germplasm Committee, Washington, D.C. He has, through Cargill and Bayer, supported numerous graduate students, including providing scholarships and research agreements and employing them upon graduation. The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources named him a 2004 Distinguished Alumnus. He was named a Texas Tech Outstanding Agriculturalist in 2005.

Gilbert and his wife, Donna, have two children, Jennifer and Jeremy, and three grandchildren.

Kirk Lewis’s, Ed.D., experience in education and communications has prepared him well for his position as chief executive officer of the Pasadena Independent School District, Pasadena, Texas. The school district has 52,500 students on 62 campuses.

He graduated from Texas Tech University in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in advertising/public relations. From 1977 to 1981, Lewis was director of public information for Houston Baptist University. During this time, he earned a master’s degree in educational futures from the University of Houston, Clear Lake campus. In 1981, Lewis took a position as director of advertising/ communication for Kwik-Kopy Corp.

Lewis began working for the Pasadena Independent School District in 1986, as an administrative assistant to the superintendent.

Over the next 20 years, he held the positions of executive director of communications/community relations; deputy superintendent for administration, public relations and governmental affairs and acting superintendent. Lewis became chief executive officer of the school district in April 2006. He earned his doctorate in educational leadership from Lamar University in Beaumont in May 2008.

For his accomplishments, Lewis has received two Silver Star Awards from the Texas School Public Relations Association, Honorary Life Membership in the Texas PTA, Golden Apple Award from Pasadena ISD, Honorary Life membership in the National Congress of Parents and Teachers and the Platinum Award for Texas Outstanding School Marketing Program.

He and his wife of 35 years, Robin, have two sons, Adam and Andrew, and a grandson. Andrew is a 2004 graduate of Texas Tech with a degree in electrical engineering.

Lauro F. Cavazos Award

Michael “Mickey” and Barbara Esslinger McKenzie of Sulpher Springs, Texas, were honored with The Lauro F. Cavazos Award at the Texas Tech Alumni Association’s 2011 “A Matador Evening: The 51st Annual Homecoming Dinner.”

Since graduating from Texas Tech, the couple has remained loyal and active alumni. Barbara served as president of the TTAA National Board of Directors in 2009.

Mickey graduated from Texas Tech in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in management, and Barbara, in 1968, with a bachelor’s degree in history. They married in 1969. She pursued a master’s degree at Texas A&M at Commerce and taught high school government for four years until their two children were born. Mickey is CEO and chairman of the board of Grocery Supply Company (GSC), the fifth-largest wholesale distributor to convenience stores in the country. The Rawls College of Business Administration named him its Outstanding CEO in 2002.

Both Mickey and Barbara are tireless volunteers in their community and philanthropists who has generously supported many areas at Texas Tech.

Their family made the single largest donation to the Peggy and Bill Dean Expansion of Merket Alumni Center. As a lasting tribute to Mickey, Barbara, their children and their grandchildren, the newly expanded alumni center is named in their honor as the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center.

The Lauro F. Cavazos Award recognizes individuals who have made a positive impact on the university through outstanding accomplishments, acts of service and/or financial support.

Top Techsan Awards

The Texas Tech Alumni Association honored four outstanding Texas Tech staff members at the 2011 Top Techsan Luncheon during the annual Homecoming Festivities on campus. The 2011 honorees were Jessica Carrillo (Executive Assistant to the President, Office of the President), David Mondt (Exhibits Preparator/Assistant Curator, School of Art), Donna C. Wade (Academic Adviser, Graduate Services, Jerry S. Rawls College of Business Administration) and Anna Thomas Young (Senior Proposal Development Administrator, Office of the Vice President for Research).

Each of the four honorees received a plaque and a cash award during the presentations. Each honoree was recognized for his or her extraordinary work proficiency and an attitude of team spirit within the Texas Tech family.

Alumni Association Highlights Osher Lifelong Learning Institute The Texas Tech University Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) became a program of the Texas Tech Alumni Association in 2011. This official merger was the culmination of more than a year’s worth of discussions by OLLI and TTAA representatives.

While each organization will still operate independently and do its own fundraising, both will now be given the chance to increase visibility, add value to their programs and increase their membership.

Although OLLI has operated independently since 2003 on the Texas Tech campus, the move to operating as a program of the Alumni Association is not without precedent. More than 100 colleges across the country offer OLLI programs, and many have highly successful partnerships with their alumni associations.

OLLI is a membership organization that provides learning opportunities for people 50 or older who want to continue to expand their knowledge and interests. In addition to free and members-only events, benefits of an annual OLLI membership include reduced-rate course offerings and discounts on admissions to many Texas Tech and Lubbock events.

Strategic Plan The Texas Tech Alumni Association took a step toward the future in 2011 with the development of a new strategic plan for the organization. The strategic planning process was directed by John Feudo, Boston College’s associate vice president for alumni relations.

Feudo spent several months interviewing current and former TTAA National Board members, current and lapsed association members, campus representatives and TTAA staff members. His goal was to get an objective picture of the Alumni Association’s image and to identify the organization’s strengths and weaknesses.

These findings were compiled and presented to the full Alumni Association National Board of Directors, as well as key Alumni Association staffers, at the board’s fall meeting. An entire day was devoted to discussion and debate on these topics. The final report was delivered to the Alumni Association in late 2011, and the staff and board of directors began working to implement the recommendations.

New Website Launches The Texas Tech Alumni Association was excited to launch its new website at the end of 2011. The new www.TexasTechAlumni.org features an updated design and navigation system as well as numerous new features not included on the previous website.

The launch of the new site was a complex process that included not just a new design, but also a complete overhaul of the TTAA’s digital presence. The TTAA partnered with two leading firms for the design (RD2) and the website/ data management (iModules) of the new site.

Alumni Association Highlights Legislative Efforts The Texas Tech Alumni Association continued its strong legacy of legislative advocacy efforts in 2011.

The year began with the TTAA helping to sponsor and organize Texas Tech Day at the state capitol in Austin. The Alumni Association’s National Board of Directors coordinated its winter meeting so board members could be in Austin to attend the Texas Tech Day events. Texas Tech and Angelo State alumni from around the state were invited and despite bad weather, a number of alumni made the trip to Austin to show support for their alma maters.

The Alumni Association also worked to sponsor and organize Texas Tech Day in Washington, D.C. During these celebrations, Texas Tech Chancellor Kent Hance led a contingent of Texas Tech and Angelo State representatives through the capitol, making sure the Texas Tech System message and needs were being shared. The purpose was to help increase the funding provided to the Texas Tech System from these legislative bodies.

Beer & Burgers Student Event The Texas Tech Alumni Association hosted the first two Beer & Burgers events in 2011. These events, which were extremely successful, were targeted at engaging graduating seniors and exposing them to the benefits of Alumni Association membership before they left campus.

Although targeted at graduating seniors, all current students were invited. Each student received a free hamburger dinner and, if 21 years of age or older, also received tickets for a free beer. We hosted events at the end of each semester, and we welcomed more than 400 students at each event.

Alumni Association Adds Key Staffers The Texas Tech Alumni Association was excited to welcome two new staff members to the team in 2011.

Courtney Marshall began her work as the director of membership in late July. Originally from West Texas, she had worked in alumni relations for more than 11 years. Prior to joining the TTAA, she worked as director of member services and communications at the Kansas State University Alumni Association, as executive director of the alumni association at the University of South Dakota and most recently as director of alumni and donor relations at Benedictine College.

Lisa Low began her work as the director of multimedia & communications in late November. Prior to joining the TTAA, she worked for more than six years in the Texas Tech University Office of Communications & Marketing. In that role, Low was responsible for executing digital marketing communications in support of the university’s strategic initiatives. She created the first institutional-level digital marketing strategy, which has been emulated by sister institutions.

Cammie Quinn (BA Sociology) Lubbock, is a first lieutenant in the Air Force and commands the interagency team, which is comprised of active Air Force and Army, Army Reserve, Army National Guard personnel and civilian leads from the Department of State, U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Agency for International Development from the forward operating base Gardez, Paktya Provice, Afghanistan.

She is a public affairs officer and reports activities of provincial reconstruction team Pakyta as a conduit between international media and her team.

F r ie n ds Michael Shonrock , a friend, has been named the 16th president of Emporia University in Kansas.

Previously, he served as senior vice president of enrollment management and student affairs at Texas Tech.

’30 Mary Gladys Gilbert West (BA Elementary Education) Temple, Texas, celebrated her 104th birthday.

A reception was held in her honor in Temple. Her son Ray West (BBA ’67 Accounting) and his wife, Sherilyn West (BS ’66 Education), and her daughter, Caroline West, hosted the event. Mary was featured in the September/October 2011 issue of the Texas Techsan magazine.

’46 Edwin Dawson (BS Agricultural Education) Lubbock, and his wife Norma Dawson (BS Child Development) farmed in the Springlake community from 1948 until 2009, when they chose to move to Lubbock.

On Dec. 21, the couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

’ 47 Robert “Bob” Weddle (BA Journalism) Bonham, Texas, spent 20 years in the news business. He then wrote 15 books dealing with Spanish and French colonial history in Texas and the Gulf region. In 2001, King Juan Carlos II of Spain awarded him the Order of Isabel la Católica, the highest honor given by the Spanish government to a non-citizen. Now past 90, Weddle has completed a writing project and presented at a symposium within the last year.

’49 Burton Clifton (BS Civil Engineering) Fort Worth, Texas and his wife Dorothy are both retired. Burton, who is a member of Texas Tech’s Civil Engineering Academy, spent 55 years with the Texas Department of Transportation in advanced planning.

’50 Jerry Crawford (BS Physical Education, M.Ed. Education Administration) Lubbock, and his wife Martha Crawford (BSE ’64 Elementary Education) celebrated

their 60th wedding anniversary July 26. They are both retired from Lubbock Independent School district and enjoy traveling and golfing.

Sam Wilborn (BS Soil Science) West Plains, Mo., graduated from Texas Tech under the G.I. Bill. He worked more than 30 years for Massey Ferguson, Inc. He and his wife, Helen, live in Pleasant Valley Retirement Village in West Plains.

’52 Franklin Brownfield (BS, MED Agricultural Education) Colorado City, Texas, and his wife Mary celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Jan. 31 with a party hosted by their children.

They are both retired teachers with 35 years of service.

Edward Hall (BS Geology) Fort Davis, Texas, and his wife Mary Hall (BS ’52 Applied Art) are both retired and have a small apple orchard in the mountains west of Fort Davis.

During a good year, the orchard produces 30,000 to 40,000 pounds of apples— in 2011 there were no apples because of the drought.

Orwig had a long career in the Justice Department, serving for three presidents and five attorneys general as a federal prosecutor. He was U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas from 2001 to 2007 and has experience with white-collar crime, Securities and Exchange Commission investigations, and insider trading and accounting fraud. ’ 97 Jerry Adams (BS Multidisciplinary Science M.Ed. Educational leadership, Educational Leadership) Lubbock, was named the 2012 Texas Association of Secondary School Principals Region 17 High School Principal of the Year. He was also one of three finalists for the Texas High School Principal of the Year.

Adams is the principal of New Deal High School as well as an adjunct professor at Wayland Baptist University. He and his wife, Sarah, have three children.

James Doughty (BA Journalism), San Antonio, Texas, received an Excellence in Media award from the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault. James, whose screen name is James Muñoz, is a reporter for CBS

affiliate KENS-TV in San Antonio.

Doughty is an active member of The San Antonio Rape Crisis Center’s Board of Trustees and often covers stories regarding crime and victims of crime for the San Antonio community.

He has also authored a book, “Some Monument to Last,” in which James shares his favorite quotes and advice to young people, along with his lifelong search for the family of the father he never knew.

’08 Ashley Burghardt (BS Apparel Design and Manufacturing) Dallas, Texas, on Feb. 16 won $10,000 and approval from some of the nation’s most renowned in the fashion industry on Lifetime Television’s reality show “24 Hour Catwalk.” During the New York filming Burghardt said she and the other contestants didn’t sleep for two days straight. Burghardt also has a Dallas-based handbag line, Ashard Richely. Handbags range from $40-500, reaching a diverse group of individuals. School of Law arbitration team took another national championship in January at the American Bar Association (ABA) Arbitration Competition in Chicago.

The team of third-year student Wade Iverson and second-year students Meredith M. Mills , Jared Mullowney and Kate Murphy claimed Texas Tech Law’s 23rd national championship.

This win is Texas Tech’s third ABA arbitration championship in the past five years, the last two in 2008 and 2010.

Cody Zilverberg , an agronomy doctoral student in Texas Tech’s Department of Plant and Soil Science, won first place in the American Forage and Grassland Council’s Emerging Scientist Competition in Louisville, Ky., in January.

This year’s emerging scientist competition featured six participants who provided 15-minute presentations, including questions and answers on a variety of subjects. Zilverberg’s research, which was part of the oral competition, was titled “Fossil fuel use and associated carbon emissions of a long-term grazing experiment.”

Cortinas presented his undergraduate research project on “Flow-Aligned Graphene/PVA Nanocomposite Films.”

Cortinas’ research on graphene-based nanocomposites is applicable to low-density, high strength aerospace materials.

Texas Tech University’s “La Ventana” yearbook won 27 awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s 29th Golden Circle Awards program for yearbook and digital media. “La Ventana” competed against more than 4,956 other entries from universities and colleges across the nation. The yearbook received first place in student life feature writing, theme and concept, cover design, end sheets, feature photo and people spreads without mug photos one spread.

University Center for Undergraduate Research abstracts were selected from among 3,500 to be presented at the 2012 National Conference on Undergraduate Research in March in Ogden, Utah.

Hosted annually, the NCUR conference promotes undergraduate research, scholarship and creative activity in all fields of study.

This year is the third the Center for Undergraduate Research has supported student involvement to the NCUR, and Texas Tech students will present research on a variety of topics ranging from microbiology to communication and gender studies.

Students selected to take part and their areas of study are Ann Marie Scott, microbiology/immunology; David South, computer science; Jess Lees, physiology; Kathryn King, marketing; co-presenters Kelly Butler and Candace Prater Miller, education; Lotoya Broughton, psychology; Mwansa Chiyenge, engineering technology; Rachel Bottlinger, communications; Tory Ervin, women's and gender studies and psychology.

Debaters Joey Donaghy and Adam Testerman placed first in the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence’s national ranking after winning the final round of the Mile High at Sea Level Swing in January at Western Washington University.

The victory guaranteed their invitation to the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence, a March national tournament open only to the top 64 teams in the nation.

School of Law moot court team won its second consecutive national championship in February at the National Moot Court Competition in New York City. Texas Tech Law also won the championship 32 years ago.

The team of third-year law students Brandon Beck, Allie Hallmark and Elizabeth Hill prevailed over the University of California-Berkeley School of Law in the final round. With the repeat win, Texas Tech becomes just the second school to ever successfully defend its championship. The team’s brief was named top in the nation, and Hallmark was named the nation’s second-best advocate.

Nearly 190 teams competed in 15 regionals in November, and the top 30 teams met in Manhattan for the national finals.
