The End of the Year Dec ember 2012 wi l l be a month to remember.

In late November, the Texas Tech Alumni Association lost one of our own when a member of our Student Alumni Board died as the result of being hit by a drunk driver. Meagan “May” Rough, who died several days after the accident, was a passenger in a car that was hit from behind.

The driver who hit her is also a student at Texas Tech. He has been charged with intoxication manslaughter.

I cannot imagine the grief experienced by both her parents and his parents. This event is a parent’s worse nightmare.

It is also another sad reminder of the consequences of driving while under the influence of alcohol.

So many students have the attitude that, “It will never happen to me.” They listen to discussions about drunk driving. They nod their heads in approval. Then, they go ahead and do it anyway.

The alcohol culture among today’s college students is alarming.

Many students feel that they cannot have a good time at any social gathering without alcohol.

Today’s college students, for the most part, do not develop their drinking habits after they come to campus. They have already developed them in high school or earlier.

The excessive use of alcohol is the No. 1 problem in the Greek system, but it is also a campus-wide situation. Time and time again, we receive criticism from visiting fans about the rude behavior they receive from drunken students. In all fairness, I might add that those criticisms also include drunken adults.

I do think there has been an attitude change among many students in the last few years. They seem to have come to the realization that they do not want to be arrested for drunken driving.

That arrest can have serious consequences in their future. It can put up barriers to law school, medical school, etc.

It doesn’t stop them from drinking, but at least some of them are less likely to drive under the influence.

Texas Tech’s Office of Campus Life and the Residence Hall Association do as thorough a job as possible of educating students about the problems associated with drinking and driving.

Incoming freshmen have to complete an online course called alcohol.edu. There are two sections. The first one must be completed by the time they enroll and, in order to access their final grades, they must complete the second part--typically by mid-semester.

Greek Life is piloting a new opportunity for the fraternity and sorority community to encourage them to try alcohol-free and substance-free late night events. The Center for Campus Life budgeted $10,000 to award to fraternities and sororities during the 2012-2013 school year to host alcohol-free and substance-free events.

The events must be hosted by at least two organizations and must be held on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Several groups have applied for funding, and multiple events have been held, all with positive feedback from the students.

In February 2012, the Student Government Association expanded the Safe Ride system to include a Safe Ride Bus (the S-Bus), which was modeled after the University of Texas E-Bus system. The initial route has stops at Broadway, the Depot District and several apartment buildings in the Overton area because of its high student population. The route runs 24 minutes roundtrip. It runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. when school is in session. Citibus and the Student Government Association indicate that 1,344 rides were given from February to June 18, 2012.

Everyone is shocked and saddened when one of these tragedies occurs. But the shock wears off, and the old habits are hard to break.

Perhaps someday.

De c e mbe r a l so saw the sudden resignation of Tommy Tuberville,

who left Tech for the University of Cincinnati, and the hiring of former Tech quarterback Kliff Kingsbury as our new head coach.

All of these events happened in the span of seven days.

Kingsbury’s hiring has solidified our fractured fan base. Last year, I made a comment that we had a fractured fan base, and it apparently annoyed Coach Tuberville. I’m sorry. I stated a fact.

It stands to reason that a new coach would have more success bringing our fans together in following Tuberville than he did following Mike Leach.

But Kliff’s hiring has generated a ton of excitement and a renewed commitment from almost everyone to support the program. The only thing that concerns me is that expectations will exceed reality. We have a tough schedule next year and a brand new quarterback.

It always takes time to build something good, and I believe we have the right man for the job. We just need to exercise a little patience next fall when there are bumps in the road.

I liked Coach Tuberville and I supported him—just like I supported Mike Leach and Spike Dykes. That was not always easy to do, especially after the collapse of this year’s team at the end of the season.

He had two outstanding recruiting classes and appeared to be on the way to a third one, so there is probably much better talent here now than he found when he came three years ago.

I have always believed that any coach should be given the opportunity to coach his own players—players that he recruited—before a fair evaluation can be made.

I don’t know the exact reason Coach Tuberville left, and I really don’t care at this point. We have a new coach, and he is one of us.

He wants to be here and has brought back other Red Raiders to assist him in climbing back up the Big 12 ladder.

The annual Outstanding Agriculturalist awards recognize individuals for contributions to various areas of Texas agriculture. This year’s recipients are Kevin Igo of Plainview for agricultural production; Richard Ridgway of Flower Mound for public service; and Joe Hurst of Idalou for agribusiness. The outstanding agriculturalist awards, established in 1969, are named for Gerald W. Thomas, who served as dean of Texas Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences from 1958 to 1970.

Igo , a Plainview native, currently farms 3,000 acres of land, with crops including corn, cotton, wheat, milo, cucumbers, soybeans and alfalfa. He also runs 225 head of Black Angus cattle and operates a feedlot/finish yard with background cattle. Igo has produced and raised 14 Breed or Reserve Breed Champion steers at major Texas stock shows in Fort Worth, San Antonio and Houston. Along with being a crop consultant in his area, he’s also the president and owner of Halfway Farm Chemical, Inc. He has been a Hale County 4-H adult leader for more than 28 years, as well as a member of the Hale County Stock Show Board and Texas 4-H Foundation Board.

Ridgway ’57, a Flower Mound resident, serves as the president of the Charles

Valentine Riley Memorial Foundation, where he’s initiated a partnership with the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the World Food Prize Foundation to promote a broader understanding of agriculture and to demonstrate the importance of scientific knowledge. Previously he served in research and leadership positions with the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service in both College Station and Beltsville, Md. He received his bachelor’s degree in agronomy from Texas Tech in 1957. His master’s and doctorate in entomology are from Cornell University (1959, 1960).

Hurst ’79, an Idalou resident, is currently general manager of Hurst Farm Supply,

which was established in 1955 by his father as a Lorenzo John Deere dealership. Hurst developed a process for trading and selling late-model, used cotton strippers that enabled the firm to earn the title of the nation’s top cotton stripper dealer for John Deere.

The company has dealerships in Lubbock, Slaton, Crosbyton, Colorado City, Snyder and Abernathy. Hurst is a long-time supporter of FFA, Texas Boys Ranch, Women’s Protective Services and the American Museum of Agriculture. He received his bachelor’s degree in agricultural education from Texas Tech in 1979.

Sciences Center President Tedd L. Mitchell, M.D. Schneider has been recognized

for his teaching and academic service along with a distinguished history of grant funding and research. He joined the TTUHSC School of Medicine Department of Cell Biology and Biochemistry in 1999. He received a bachelor’s degree in microbiology from the University of Washington in 1986 and a doctoral degree in microbiology and immunology from the University of Arizona in 1993. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York.

The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences became an independent school in 1994 and offers master’s and doctoral degrees in nine areas of study. Schneider replaces Douglas M. Stocco, Ph.D., as dean.

Peppers-Citizen graduated with a bachelor’s degree in

broadcast journalism in 1976. She has worked on the National Military Command Center disaster response team, providing support during major hurricanes. Since 2011, she has been the project manager for Quasars, Inc., of Washington, D.C. While she worked as chief of the plans branch at the headquarters of the U.S. Air Force, she conducted an evacuation after the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on the Pentagon and directly supported the secretary and chief of staff of the Air Force in the early hours of attack response.

Holmes graduated in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in advertising. As senior operating officer, Holmes has had profit-and-loss responsibility at three major communication companies. He has a record for improving profitability and customer service by increasing market share; improving the sales/marketing process; raising employee productivity, satisfaction and commitment; and operating in highly competitive market segments. Since 2012, he has worked for the Valley of the Sun YMCA in greater Phoenix, and has been the vice president of operations.

Hornaday publicized, promoted and marketed Texas Tech athletics for 30 years. He was responsible for the promotion of Tech’s athletic image through news releases, media guides, game programs and daily service to the media as assistant sports information director and sports information director. He attended Tech from 1965 to 1970 and returned in 1978 as assistant sports infor-

mation director and finished his bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1979. He currently serves on the Southwest Region Selection Committee for the College Football Hall of Fame.

McCoy graduated with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism in 1998. She has been involved in sports reporting since she was named sports director in 1998 at KCBD-TV in Lubbock. She moved to FOX Sports Southwest in 2004, where she was a sideline reporter for FOX Sports’ nationally televised college football package. Still with FOX, she is the in-game reporter for the Texas Rangers’ home telecasts, and she hosts the “Big 12 Showcase.”

Nelson graduated with a bachelor’s degree in advertising in 1979. He has more than 30 years of senior leadership experience.

He worked as president, CEO and director for Kerberos Proximal Solutions, an early stage medical device company focused on removal of thrombus and debris throughout the cardiovascular system. He was also president of Baxter Perfusion Services, of San Diego, where he built a $150 million fully integrated cardiovascular clinical service business through acquisition and organic growth.

Snow graduated with a bachelor’s degree in advertising in 1993. He is the vice president of Global Marketing Partnerships with the National Basketball Association. He has almost 20 years of experience across the advertising, marketing and sports industries with a unique background that stretches across marketing and communication strategy, agency business development, and sports property sponsorship sales. After three years as the North American director of business development for DDB Worldwide, Snow recently returned to the NBA to help lead its global sponsorship sales efforts.

The Texas Tech College of Media & Communication honored alumnus and Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Montemayor at its annual Hall of Fame Luncheon.

Montemayor graduated from Texas Tech in 1975 with a bachelor of arts degree in journalism. Montemayor started his journalism career as the editor of Texas Tech’s campus newspaper. Upon graduation, he took a job as a staff writer with The Dallas Times Herald. He was a member of the reporting team nominated for the 1977 and 1978 Pulitzer Prize for coverage about alleged civil rights violations of Mexican-Americans in Texas.

Montemayor was a member of the Los Angeles Times reporting team that received the 1984 Pulitzer Prize. He is noted as the most prolific staff writer involved with the project.

Following his work with the Los Angeles Times, Montemayor earned an MBA from the University of California Los Angeles.

Montemayor worked in multiple aspects of media as well as held many executive media and marketing management positions during his career.

In 2004, Montemayor was the primary author of a 160-page treatment focusing on the economic, political and social impact of Latinos called “Right Before Our Eyes: Latinos Past, Present and Future.” Montemayor currently serves as a journalism instructor and director of the Latino Information Network at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J.

Quentin Smith, Ph.D., began his position Sept.

17 as dean of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy.

Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Oberlin College and a doctoral degree in pharmacology from the University of Utah. Prior to his recruitment, Smith served as chief of the Section on Neurochemistry and Brain Transport, Laboratory of Neurosciences, National Institute on Aging at the National Institutes of Health.

In addition to his senior associate dean position, Smith has previously served as chair for the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. TTUHSC honored Smith as a University Distinguished Professor in 2007, and in 2009 he was named the sixth recipient of the Grover E. Murray Professorship, the highest honor TTUHSC bestows upon faculty members.

NEWS Texas Tech University’s Vietnam Center and Archive will join forces with Michigan State University’s Vietnam Group Archive

More than 2,600 students graduated Dec. 14 and 15 during five Texas Tech University ceremonies held at the United Spirit Arena.

on a recent grant received to create an online repository. The project received $265,000 in funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities to digitize 100,000 pages of materials related to the U.S. government’s early efforts to build a stable, non-communist regime in South Vietnam. This will provide students and scholars across the world easy digital access to materials significant to the study of Vietnam.

Texas Tech’s role in the project is to share insights and the practices they used to develop the Virtual Vietnam Archive, which houses more than 3.2 million pages of scanned materials related to all aspects of American involvement in Southeast Asia.

In return for Texas Tech’s support, Michigan State will provide copies of the digitized “Vietnam Project” resources to add to the Virtual Vietnam Archive.

These documents, which cover a time period predating the majority of Texas Tech’s collection, will fill a gap in the archive from the 1960s to the 1970s.

The Vietnam Center and Archive at Texas Tech, which was founded in 1989, houses the largest and most comprehensive collection of materials relating to the Vietnam conflict outside of the U.S. National Archives. The United States Department of Defense has chosen Texas Tech University to be the

first university commemorative partner in the effort to honor Vietnam veterans. The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration is the official title given to the program in the 2008 National Defense Authorization Act. It states that the Secretary of Defense will coordinate, support and facilitate other programs and activities of the federal government, state and local governments and other organizations in commemorations of the Vietnam War. The Texas Tech Vietnam Center and Archive is the largest collection of such materials outside the National Archive system. Under the direction of Stephen Maxner, it is the center’s mission to collect and preserve the documentary record of the Vietnam War, and to encourage research and education regarding all aspects of the American Vietnam experience. The Commemoration will, among other things, thank and honor the veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice on behalf of a grateful nation, including personnel held as Prisoners of War or listed as Missing in Action.

Commemorative events began Memorial Day 2012 and will continue for 13 years through Veterans Day 2025, mirroring the length of America’s longest war.

The Department of Accounting in Texas Tech University’s Rawls College of Business ranks among the top 50 according to a premier accounting publication.

According to the October issue of Public Accounting Report, the Rawls undergraduate program has moved from No. 49 to No. 38 nationwide, and its master’s program has moved from outside of the top 50 to No. 39.

The report is an independent newsletter of the accounting profession; the rankings were included in the publication’s 31st Annual Professors Survey. PAR research is based on professors’ rankings of accounting programs at American colleges and universities.

Texas Tech University has announced the implementation of the new Department of Community, Family and Addiction Studies within the College of Human Sciences. Because of the significant

growth of the CFAS undergraduate major during the past three years and the desire to expand the graduate program, the College of Human Sciences decided that creating a stand-alone department was the next step to ensure the college’s ongoing success.

The new department offers a CFAS undergraduate degree, the Addictive Disorders and Recovery Studies undergraduate minor and graduate certificate program, and a master’s and doctoral degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. The CFAS will be at the head of family and addictions research and unique academic offerings with 20 undergraduate courses and 27 graduate courses. It will provide a distinct identity and increase campus and community visibility for the programs within it.

The Texas Tech University costumed mascot Raider Red was named the Capital One 2012 National Mascot of the Year! In regular-sea-

son voting, Red took second place out of 16 mascots for the most votes nationwide; he then faced the first-place and undefeated Cocky the Gamecock from the University of South Carolina in the final round. The Capital One National Mascot of the Year is determined by Internet voting. The championship round voting ended Dec. 17, and the winner was announced during the 2013 Capital One Bowl Jan. 1. The win nets a $20,000 scholarship to help fund Texas Tech’s mascot program.

The original 16 contestants were selected by a panel of judges from Capital One from among the mascot entries received from all eligible NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision schools.

Welcome, Woody!

By Jennifer Ritz Texas Tech University has a new Masked Rider horse. He replaced Midnight Matador, who was retired in December and was the longest-serving Masked Rider horse, with 10 seasons under his cinch.

The new horse, Woody, is the 8-year-old Quarter Horse who traveled to the Dec. 28 Meineke Car Care Bowl, where Texas Tech defeated University of Minnesota. The selection of the new horse was approved by the Masked Rider Program Advisory Committee. The May/June issue of the Texas Techsan magazine will feature the new horse. Fans will be able to read more details about Woody and one of the best traditions at Texas Tech, the Masked Rider!

Masked Rider Monument Unveiled and dedicated in the year 2000, the life-and-a-quarter-sized, commissioned Masked Rider monument is an inspiring addition to the campus landscape. The monument, located south of Frazier Alumni Pavilion, was fashioned by renowned sculptor Grant Speed of Lindon, Utah.

To fund the project, a limited number of monument replicas are being sold through the Texas Tech Alumni Association. The replicas are 2 feet long by 1.5 feet tall, an impressive artistic addition to any business lobby, home or personal office.

Although contributions of any amount are appreciated, limited edition replicas are available for $7,500 and can be paid with three annual pledges of $2,500. Replicas will be delivered upon first payment.

Setting forests on fire may seem like a dangerous and senseless act, but for fire ecologists across the nation, it is an opportunity to research first-hand how fires affect the ecosystem.

While growing up in Bloomington, Minn., Angie Reid knew one thing for certain; she was not cut out for an office job where she would be required to wear suits and heels. Instead, she wanted a career where she could combine her passion of the outdoors and love of protecting wildlife.

When she was a senior in high school, Reid knew she wanted to be involved in a rangeland and wildlife degree program. Though choosing her major was simple, deciding on a school was a bit more difficult.

“I started looking at all the schools in the U.S. which had rangeland majors,” she says. “I ended up touring about seven schools, and Texas Tech just kind of fit. Everyone was really friendly, and it just felt like home. It was a good choice.”

Not only was Reid pursuing a degree in the range and wildlife management program, but she was also pursuing a minor in natural history and humanities through the Honors College. At the time of her enrollment, she wanted to up the prestige of her degree, and the NHH program was a perfect fit, seeing as how there were not many honors agricultural classes offered at the time.

“The NHH degree added something wholly different to my education, something I didn’t really realize was possible in science-related college courses,” Reid says. “I learned to look at nature with an eye for drawing and creative writing instead of just under a microscope.”

While she was a student at Texas Tech University, Reid had the opportunity to canoe down the Missouri River for two weeks as a part of her natural history and humanities studies through the Texas Tech Outdoor Pursuits Center.

Rather than just canoe down the river and camp while enjoying the sites, this trip had a unique twist. While traveling down the river, the group of around 10 students tracked Lewis and Clark’s journey in Montana. The group read “The Essential Lewis and Clark” in preparation for the trip and used it to help them follow their trail.

“Each evening, around the campfire, someone in the group taught the rest of the group something they had researched that was applicable to the journey,” she says. “One of the most unique things about the group was that we each had very different education backgrounds and brought a lot of information to the table.

“Discussions normally occurred well into the dark of the night when we forced ourselves to bed because we knew we would be breaking camp and paddling again all the next day.”

On one of these evenings, Reid and a few of her fellow students decided to sleep under the stars. When Reid awoke, she realized she was alone. A snowfall during the night drove her peers back into their tents, while Reid just burrowed further into her sleeping bag against protests from the others.

Reid recalls this as one of her most memorable collegiate experiences and even ended up doing her master’s research only miles away from where they ended their journey.

After graduating from Texas Tech in 2007 with a degree in range management and fisheries and three minors in biology, animal science and natural resources and humanities, Reid decided to pursue a master’s degree from Oklahoma State University. Once she completed her master’s degree in rangeland ecology in 2009, Angie realized the time had finally come—time to find a full-time job.

Luckily, she had an idea where she wanted to go.

While she was at Texas Tech, she had taken classes in fire ecology, which involved studying fire’s effect on the ecosystem. These classes sparked Reid’s interest, so she pursued her studies and research involving fire ecology while obtaining her master’s degree.

When it came time to find a job, Reid immediately began emailing every contact she had made in her time as a student, and found one job that stood out among the rest.

“I had three different people within the span of a few days email me with the exact same job posting and say, ‘This is exactly what you are looking for,’ and it was,” she says.

The job posting was for the position of a fire ecology specialist at the Tall Timbers Research Station and Land Conservatory in Tallahassee, Fla. Reid knew instantly that this job was meant for her.

Reid describes her job best as a half-inside, half-outside job. Half of her time is spent in the field conduct-

ing prescribed fires, while the other half of her time is spent analyzing data and writing research articles for peer journals. Reid’s favorite part though, is the fires.

The purpose of the prescribed fires Reid does in the field is to help enhance local wildlife habitats. These fires also simulate wildfires and provide an excellent opportunity for first-hand research.

Although Reid loves her job, it has not come without its challenges. Because her education had been focused on rangeland, she has faced a steep learning curve with her career in Florida, but she has made the most of every moment along the way.

“There are a lot of trees out here so I have enjoyed learning how fires behave in a more forest-like setting,” she says. “Every time I’m out burning I learn something new. I just love being outside and learning new things.”

Reid has also been faced with the obstacle of being a minority in her field.

“A lot of women in range management or agriculture in general are probably daunted by the fact that they’re in a male-dominated field,” she says. “I certainly felt that way when I started college and realized that there were very few other females in the department, but I ended up becoming close and lasting friends with pretty much all the women in the department, I still talk to them to this day.

“I just found that good female relationships within your career is really important and I even ended up becoming one of the guys with a lot of guys in the department, so that was fun, too.”

Although Reid loves her career, she loves to spend her free time hunting, fishing and camping with her family and friends. She also has a passion for traveling, especially internationally. In fact, her future plans involve working in fire ecology in Australia. For the time being though, Angie soaks up every moment she can while having her dream job and thanks Texas Tech for giving her a strong foundation to do so.

Editor’s note: I struggled with how to write this story. I decided to tell it from a personal perspective, because I want it to be about who Kliff Kingsbury really is. If you want stats, Google “Kliff Kingsbury.”

You’ll find about a half-million references that tell you all about his stats as a player in college and as a pro, and his stats as a coach. That’s all out there. It’s highly impressive, but it’s been done.

I want to give our alumni a glimpse into what made Kliff Kingsbury who he is. I grew up in New Braunfels, just like Kliff.

We went to the same schools all the way through high school.

Although he’s younger than I am, his parents were both employed at New Braunfels High School when I attended. They were extremely popular among the students, and I knew them both, especially Kliff’s late mother, Sally, whom I considered a good friend.

So, forgive the personal references, but I knew this way would be the best to tell his story.

Texas Tech fans were stunned when Coach Tommy Tuberville split unexpectedly Dec. 8.

Immediately, rumors began to fly about Tuberville’s replacement.

Sports reporters began throwing out names—men they thought would be a good fit for Texas Tech.

Alumni, however, had one name in mind: alumnus and football phenom Kliff Kingsbury.

Less than a week after unceremoniously losing our head football coach, Red Raiders were elated to have their wish granted. Award-winning, record-setting former Texas Tech quarterback Kliff Kingsbury was welcomed back as Red Raider Nation’s new head football coach.

We snagged some swagger of our own.

“When I got into coaching, I went to the

When I heard the news Dec. 8 about Tuberville’s departure (from my news junkie sister-in-law Norma Ritz Johnson ’91), I was out driving go-karts with my two younger boys.

I immediately contacted my husband Rudy Ritz, Ed.D., ’93, ’94, ’99, a faculty member here at Tech (who was out of town with our oldest son), and then my twin sister, Allison Bell Love ’97. Rudy expressed surprise but said little.

The first thing my sister said was, “They’d better hire Kliff.”

I had seen Kliff’s name mentioned more than once as a replacement option for Tuberville, were Tuberville to ever leave Tech. Any time the topic of conversation arose with my friends and family, an Aggie would invariably state, “He’s not leaving A&M. Why would he leave A&M?” I didn’t just hear that once, from one Aggie, I heard it multiple times from multiple Aggies. And I understood their sentiment—I didn’t agree, I just understood. And I also began to believe Kliff would never come back to Tech.

Kliff has nothing negative to say about College Station. His older brother, Klint, is an alumnus. Kliff loved his time there, loved the kids he coached. When I asked him how long he had lived in College Station, he responded, “353 days.”

I paused a beat before asking, “Is that a joke?”

He said, with a smile, “No. Three-hundred-and-fiftythree days.”

That’s a testament to the whirlwind he’s experienced in his brief but standout coaching career: at University of Houston since Summer 2008, then to A&M Jan. 4, 2012, then, December 2012…home.

That’s right, coming to Tech, to Kliff, meant coming home. Kliff didn’t just attend college here, he played football here. He set and broke an astounding number of records. He is a legend at Texas Tech. Alumni love Kliff almost as much as Kliff loves Tech.

The opportunity to become head coach here was, in his words, his “dream job.”

“The very best thing about coming back is probably all the familiar faces; it’s made it a really comfortable transition for me,” Kliff said. “I’m excited about the program and about having people who want to be here and want to see this place succeed.”

University of Houston. That was a business decision. When I went to that other university,

His comments from the Dec. 14, 2012, press conference announcing his hiring further detail his feelings about Tech.

“This is a place that’s helped shape me as a man,” he said. “It’s given me so much. All the best friends I have in the world I met at this place. I’m just honored and humbled to be a part of this and be able to coach at your university, so thank you.”

Kliff’s affinity for coaching took him by surprise. Football had always been his life, and when he finished playing pro ball, he figured he was finished with the sport.

“I really hadn’t considered coaching as a career,” Kliff says. “I was going to go back and get my MBA. I never really saw myself doing it. I went to Houston (University of Houston) that summer and started working with the quarterbacks and fell in love with it.

“It’s more fulfilling to me than even having success as a player. Watching, like, Case Keenum from Houston have that success and, during the Heisman Ceremony (where his Texas A&M player Johnny Manziel was awarded the trophy), I was more nervous than I ever was as a player, waiting on that to be announced. It’s really more fulfilling for me than when I was playing.”

And while Kliff is young, he’s not short on experience, or confidence.

“Having been involved in coaching five years, everything about being young is beneficial,” he says. “I’m not too far removed from being in the players’ shoes, having been recruited like they’re being recruited, still being able to talk like they talk and know about the pop culture things that they’re involved in. I find everything about being a young coach is beneficial.”

He has also taken advice from his father: “Be yourself and do what you do. Don’t try to be somebody else.”

So, what is Kingsbury like in person? He’s tall and slim—which most people know. He has a deep voice and very relaxed demeanor. He’s also patient and humble. The day we completed the photo shoot for this magazine, we walked to the stadium to get a few shots. We passed numerous people on the way—regular folks, not high-profile people. Kingsbury said hello and called those he knew by name.

One of the people he greeted by name was moving tables, and Kingsbury made it a point to stop, call him by name, and ask how he was doing.

“As far as the football goes, I’m more of a walking-type guy, not a talking-type guy. So I’ll let you all see that in the fall. But it’s going to be an exciting brand of football. We’ll be attacking on both sides of the ball; we’ll play with confidence. The kids are going to have fun.

They’re going to have swagger, and you’ll enjoy this next year’s team.

Kliff is a sensational character. Anyone with even a passing interest in Tech football regards him as a sort of celebrity—that statement would make him shake his head, because he’s not a braggart. But, hey, it’s true. He’s well known—and that didn’t just start at Tech.

New Braunfels, where Kliff grew up, used to be a small town. It was still pretty small in the 1990s, when Kliff was in high school— where he graduated fourth in his class at a 5-A school. His senior year in football was a stellar one—the Unicorns were picked to finish last in their district, but won district and advanced to the Division II, 5-A state semi-finals finishing with a 13 and 2 record. Kliff was also selected M.V.P. of the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star game that summer.

Like most Texas towns, football is king. Most residents of New Braunfels knew who Kliff’s father was—a football coach at New Braunfels High School. Folks knew his mother, Sally, because she was a much-loved teacher and aerobics instructor and the couple had lived in town since the early 1970s—when New Braunfels was a really small German burg.

When Kliff became a high school football star, that further upped the family’s popularity. I remember driving to New Braunfels from Lubbock on Fridays, to visit family, and Rudy and I would tune into the local radio stations as soon as we could to hear the Unicorn football games—and more than once I remember listening in awe to the announcer describe a long game-saving pass delivered by quarterback Kliff Kingsbury. It brought joy to my heart to hear he was excelling, but also because I knew how proud it made his mom and dad.

Kliff’s father, Coach Tim Kingsbury, coached my older brother, Kevin Bell (an Aggie...I know, I know), in football. And Kevin has never, ever said anything but good about Tim. “Man, we respected him so much,” he says. “Nobody wanted to let him down. He was just an unbelievable coach, so dedicated.”

Tim grew up in Austin. His father was an elementary school principal for 30 years in northwest Austin. Tim was in the Marine Corps and fought in Vietnam in the late ’60s and, upon his return, he enrolled at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas (then Southwest Texas State). That was where he met and married Sally.

“I was an education major at Southwest,” Tim says. “I was going to teach elementary school.”

While his chief interest was working with kids, he also had an affinity for football. Tim played football in high school and in the Marine Corps. So, when he was offered a job, by Head Coach Jim Streety (more on him later), coaching at New Braunfels in 1974, it was a 26 /// T ECHSAN texastechalumni.org

natural fit. Tim stayed at New Braunfels until 1991, when he transitioned to San Antonio’s James Madison High School when Streety accepted the head coach position there.

“I wanted to give both Klint and Kliff a chance to develop as players without me being their coach,” notes Tim. In 1995 Tim was hired as the athletic director/head coach back at New Braunfels High School. By that time, Klint was a senior and Kliff was a sophomore. Tim stayed on until his son began playing for Texas Tech, then he spent his last few years until retirement as the P.E. teacher at the New Braunfels Independent School District’s sixth grade campus. Many in the community were disappointed to lose him as their head coach, but Tim refused to give his coaching duties half-effort.

“I looked at it as, either I make a full commitment, or I don’t,” explains Tim. He and Sally planned to attend every one of their son’s games, which didn’t allow time for coaching high school football. One thing Kliff noted about his own work ethic was that he learned it from his father.

“Anybody who knows me, or who has ever met me, knows that I learned my work ethic from my dad,” Kliff says. “He was always the first to arrive and the last to leave.”

I asked Tim about Kliff’s younger years—was he always so dedicated?

“Oh yeah,” Tim says. “He’s always been determined. When he played soccer, he was about six or seven-years old, and it bothered him so much if his team lost. A lot of the other kids were young enough to not understand, but not him. He was always very focused and he wanted to win.”

And once Kliff set his course to be a quarterback, it was set in stone.

“He always liked to throw the football around,” Tim says. “He loved Joe Montana, who was a quarterback when Kliff was a kid.

He loved Notre Dame, the 49ers. To me, it always seemed like he was going to be a quarterback.”

And when the college recruiters came calling, both Kliff’s parents were behind him.

“They knew it was my dream,” Kliff says. “They supported me 100 percent.”

Tim and Sally traveled to almost every game Kliff played in college, and as many of his professional games as they could. Tim says he looks forward to traveling to Lubbock again.

“We made a lot of great friends while going up to Tech,” he says. “I’ve always loved Tech and loved the people in West Texas.”

Kliff was greatly influenced by his father. He was, however, also fortunate to have a mother who was also highly influential in his success. There was no greater motivator and supporter of Kliff than her. She gave 110 percent for her boys, everyday, all the time.

Sally Moeller Kingsbury (who passed away December 2005 from cancer), taught government and a course she dubbed “Street Law.” I took both government and Street Law from her. My twin sister and I were also a members of her Mock Trial team—and, if I do say so myself, our team was awesome. We took second place in the state competition. We were awesome because of Sally, not because any of us were such great shakes—she spent countless hours coaching us, tirelessly holding practices in the evenings until we all had our roles down pat. Her mantra to us was “focus, focus, focus,” and I can still hear her saying it today, 23 years later. I say that often to my own three boys.

I’m not the first person to say that Sally was my favorite teacher ever—from kindergarten through grad school—my standout favorite. She was a dynamo.

Tami Herring Sahni ’94 is an alumna and a dentist who practices in New Braunfels. She attended school in New Braunfels as well, where she had Sally as a teacher. Sahni’s mother and Sally went to high school together in San Marcos, Texas.

“I grew up knowing Sally,” says Sahni, who displays a poster of Kliff in her office. “I’ve heard from more than one person that her motto as a kid was ‘play, play, play.’ She carried that through to adulthood. Sally was always positive, she was never negative. She always said, ‘Whatever your dreams are, you can achieve them.’

She was such a motivator. I loved her!

“When I heard Kliff was going to be Tech’s new coach, I was thrilled. He’s always been supported here in New Braunfels, because it’s his hometown. But there are also so many Red Raiders around here who are united behind him.”

That would make Sally smile. For everything Sally loved, for all of her brightness, happiness and sunshine—and there was an abundance of that—the one thing she really, really disliked was… losing. She was a competitive distance runner and an aerobics instructor and a fierce supporter of her two sons. Her competitive drive and positive attitude was instilled in both of her sons.

Everyone I talked to about Kliff stressed that his drive to succeed, to be a champion, is, and always has been, paramount in his life. We have a football coach who, if we lose, will be more upset about the loss than the fans. Because he’s driven but also because, to him, it’s personal.

Kingsbury was a multi-sport player. Until junior high, his main sport was soccer. He also played flag football, baseball and basketball. He began playing full-contact football in seventh grade and, in high school, he played baseball, basketball and ran track. Kingsbury says when he was in high school he followed the football teams of Miami and all the major Texas universities.

Kingsbury grew up in a family that loves the outdoors.

His favorite pastime is fishing, particularly saltwater, and especially in Cabo San Lucas in Baja California Sur, Mexico; Puerta Vallarta in Jalisco, Mexico; and Margarita Island in Nueva Esparta, Venezuela.

Kingsbury has enjoyed great success at a young age, but his brother Klint, a mechanical engineer who lives in Austin, is no slouch. At the age of 35, he is a minority-owner in multimillion dollar company Dallas-based Texas Air Systems, which produces engineered commercial HVAC systems. He and two friends also started their own company, Tactical Archery Systems, which sells high-end bows for hunting. Tactical Archery Systems products have been promoted by noted outdoorsman and singer Ted Nugent, are sold around the United States at large and small hunting establishments, and at Cabela’s.

“With his dad being who he is, and a mom like Sally, he had no choice but to be competitive.”

That was a final thought imparted to me, with a good-hearted chuckle, by Jim Streety, athletic director and head football coach at James Madison High School in San Antonio. Streety began coaching in 1974 at New Braunfels High School. He hired Tim Kingsbury for his first coaching job, and the two coached together for more than two decades.

Streety was an integral part of getting Kliff a scholarship at Texas Tech because of his friendship with Spike Dykes, who was the Texas Tech head football coach from 1987 until 1999. He pointed out, too, that college coaches like coaches’ sons because they have a leg up on what to expect. Their lives revolve around football from early childhood.

“I knew Spike through coaching,” Streety explains. “I knew him from coaches conventions and from when he coached at Texas (University of Texas-Austin). I really got to know him well when he coached at Midland Lee (High School). Dean Campbell was recruiting this area at the time, and he really wanted Kliff, but there wasn’t a spot for him. Dean told me if a spot came available before signing day, he’d have Spike call me to talk about Kliff. It was more of a personal/character reference. I reaffirmed some things he was thinking about Kliff. I don’t think he knew what a competitor Kliff was and how strong he was academically. I told him, ‘He’ll be a leader, and he’ll never embarrass you.’”

Streety spoke with confidence because he’s known Kliff since birth.

“We did everything together,” Streety says about his family and the Kingsbury family. “We took ski trips together every year, camping trips, fishing trips, we went to their ranch. In the summers, they were always over swimming in our pool.”

When I asked Streety about seeing emerging talent in Kliff, he said, “Early on we could tell he had a passion to be a quarterback.

He made it happen.”

When Kliff was just a sprout, he was a ball boy for the New Braunfels High School team. But that wasn’t the only time he lugged a football around.

“Kliff was young when he decided he wanted to be a quarterback,” says Klint Kingsbury, Kliff’s older brother. “I never had any desire to be a quarterback and I didn’t have the hand-eye coordination anyway. Kliff always had a football. He took that football to bed with him and would toss it in the air, almost touching the ceiling, then catch it. He also hung tires from the trees in

the backyard and he’d throw the football through those. I was a defensive end, all I did was hit people (when playing football).”

The brothers played football against each other when Klint was a senior and Kingsbury was a sophomore and the coaches would run scout teams.

“Kliff just wanted to play football. I remember when I came home from college one time, he wanted to throw the football and he ended up hurting my hand because he could throw so hard.

He had gotten really good, he could smash your hand.”

When I asked Klint what he thought about the folks who’ve said his brother is too young for such a high-profile position, his response was, “What difference does age make when he’s proven himself? He knows offense and defense like the back of his hand.

He’s brilliant. He gets to work at 5 a.m. and leaves after 8:00 every night. He was underestimated in high school, underestimated in college—look what he achieved.”

More than 1,200 season tickets have been sold since Kliff was hired. At least 10 new t-shirt designs featuring Kliff can be found in area shops. Local stores sold out of footballs for autographing when Kliff held a signing event during a Texas Tech basketball game.

Fans are ready for the 2013 season. The coaching staff is now assembled, and it’s heartening to hear our new coach say, “We’ll be attacking both sides of the ball.”

In other words, let’s not say the Red Raiders will be a strictly offense-driven team. Growing up with a father who was a defensive coordinator and an older brother who was a defensive end, Kliff really gets the importance of a tough defense—one that will complement a wicked offense.

“I learned probably 10 different offenses from playing in college, on (through his professional career as well as coaching),” he explains about crafting his own brand of football, which will include a staff that’s passionate about seeing Tech succeed. “I’ve been around quite a few offensive coordinators, quarterback coaches, and seen there are different ways to get the job done. There are things that stuck with me, things I thought really helped me.”

Ultimately, he says, “I just want to win championships.”

The Tuberville era is over. And, for fans who wonder, this won’t be a continuation of the Leach Era. It’s the beginning of the Kingsbury Era.

Although Scorching Habanero sounds really hot, it’s actually just a different kind of hot—habanero as opposed to jalapeño. Fire Roasted is the latest addition to the line and proving to be a favorite, it emptied off store shelves the week before New Year’s Day, almost as quickly as it was stocked for the first time. Gentle is another favorite because it works so well in cooking.

Coma Kylito’s en todo!

The salsa line isn’t exactly a brand-new idea for Kyle.

“I always cooked growing up,” Kyle, a trained chef, says. “Somehow I was always in the kitchen as a young kid. I had a passion for food, and I started cooking at a restaurant called Juan in a Million in Lubbock and did that for three years while going to Tech. Then I ended up getting a job with Marriott Corporate Services, and I worked in Las Colinas and got formal training. I was there about a year. Then 10 years ago, I had my own restaurant in Slaton, Jodarro’s Grill.

“There’s a lot of stress that goes into running a restaurant. It was predominantly Mexican food, but everything was from scratch. We got a lot of traffic out of Lubbock and surrounding communities. I had a partner, but it just didn’t pan out in the long run. We had great food, big crowds, but looking back we probably could have done a better job from a management standpoint—it was just one of those things. However, it was definitely a learning experience for me, and a lot of positives came out of it.”

One of those positives is that the name “Kylito’s” was coined by a woman who frequented Jodarro’s Grill. The customer, an elderly Mexican-American woman, came in one day and ordered enchiladas.

She ate them and then asked to speak to the cook, Kyle. He came out to meet her.

“She explained, ‘When I come here to eat, I always order chicken-fried steak. I have been skeptical to try the Mexican food because you have no Hispanics in your kitchen,’ She then patted Kyle on the arm and said, “Kylito, you have some Mexican blood in you!’”

Needless to say, Kyle was very flattered by her compliment.

“The restaurant is where the salsa came from as well. Once I got out of the restaurant, people started asking me for the recipe for this, that and the other. I was basically giving the salsa away for years.”

On weekends, Kyle began cooking salsa at home—he started making a few jars at a time, but his product grew to about 200 jars’ worth each week—to give to friends and people who asked for it. He hoped there might be a larger market for it one day. When he started a sales job with ADT security systems, he gave each of his customers a jar of the salsa, what he calls “a calling card of sorts.” Many customers contacted him, asking where they could get more. That was when he decided it was time to check out the possibility of mass-producing his product.

“2001 is when Kyle introduced the salsa to us,” Tracye says. “Kyle is an amazing cook and was always creating something. We all loved his Mexican food, so he would whip up some salsa to go with his enchiladas and tacos. When he opened his restaurant in Slaton, he used the same recipe he had always made for us.

“Kyle asked us in December 2010 if we would be interested in going in with him to manufacture the salsa. Of course, it was a no-brainer for Kraig and me to say yes—we would have no overhead, and we had tons of people hooked on it already, so we knew it was a great product. In January 2011, we formed Kylito’s Salsa Co.® and began all the paperwork on trademarks, websites, fanpages, etc.”

Tracye has several roles in the company, but her title is director of online sales. She has a bachelor’s degree in human sciences from Texas Tech, which she earned in 1997.

She also has taught technology in an area elementary school for three years. Her knowledge of computers has been a plus for the company, as she maintains the company website and handles the online orders at www.kylitos.com. She also follows up on questions about the company and products and administers their fanpage on Facebook, where she posts pictures and gives information about products and locations people can find them.

Lowe’s Supermarkets actually were the first chain to give Kylito’s Salsa® a shot. The buyer in the corporate office in Littlefield, Texas, gave them their start with that company.

It was their first big step into the grocery world. Soon more chains would follow, adding United Supermarkets, Brookshire Brothers (Lufkin), Whole Foods (Austin locations), and many Affiliated Foods member stores throughout Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. Brookshire Grocery Company (Tyler) will be adding Kylito’s Salsa® to their 150 locations beginning in mid-February.

“United Supermarkets has been a huge partner for Kylito’s Salsa Co.®,” Tracye says. “Not only did they believe in our product, but they loved our story and dedicated time and effort into promoting it.”

Eddie Owens, director of communications and public relations for United Supermarkets, is complimentary of the products.

“We are really making a concerted effort chain-wide and especially in our Market Street stores, to promote Texas products,” he says. “It’s an even bigger feather for us to promote great area companies such as Kylito’s.”

Both Kyle and Kraig have bachelor’s degrees in marketing from Texas Tech—Kraig graduated in 1991, and Kyle graduated in 1999.

That background has proven to be very helpful with their company.

“I would say the favorite or most rewarding part of what we do would be coming up with strategy or a marketing plan for our products in a given account and watching that plan executed successfully,” says Kraig, who has an administrative role with the company.

Kyle says that their marketing strategy is very hands-on. They are acquainted with the leadership in most of the stores that sell the product.

Part of their jobs is serving as merchandisers. They go to the stores and make sure the product is there and in a good location.

They also make sure the price is correct, and if there is a promotion, ensure they have sales tags. The partners also coordinate and schedule all demos for the various stores.

Kyle and Kraig’s sister, Karla Wolfe, is their sales representative in Wichita Falls. She has helped open up doors to many grocery stores in the Wichita Falls area and large parts of Oklahoma. She

has been solely responsible for the their success in those areas and is an integral part of the company.

“Ultimately, you have to get it in their mouths,” Kyle says. “We demo a ton. We demo in as many of the grocery store locations as we can.”

Tasting homemade is what sets the Kylito’s Salsa® apart from the competition. Although Kyle no longer cooks up the hot sauce in his kitchen—it is made in a factory to his exact specifications— the product reminds people of something Mom or Dad might make or that you might find in a hole-in-the-wall Mexican food restaurant. The jar even has an old-fashioned feel—the type you might put your own homemade sauce in.

The inspiration for the jar’s logo came to Kyle while vacationing on a beach in Mexico. He liked the clothing the bartender there wore and patterned his mascot after it. The mascot morphed with each product, even to wearing a fireman’s uniform on the Fire Roasted label.

Huevos de Kylito’s

2 eggs 1/3 cup Kylito’s Salsa® (Use the heat level of your choice, but I dare you to use Scorching Habanero!)

2-3 oz. of shredded cheese

In a skillet, fry eggs to your desired preference (mine—sunny side)!

Once they’re done, place eggs on a plate.

Pour salsa into hot skillet and bring to a rapid boil.

(About 20 seconds should do it.)

Pour salsa over eggs, and top with shredded cheese.

Cover plate with a domed lid for about 30-45 seconds to allow cheese to melt.

Top with finely chopped green onions (optional).

Serve with a side of potatoes and a stack of homemade tortillas!

Although there are no plans to go nationwide with the products, people as far away as New York have had a chance to sample it.

A man in Tyler, Texas, whose son attends West Point, asked Kyle to participate in “The Texas Tamale Tailgate” there last fall. The cadets’ parents treated all the Texas cadets to a Texas-style meal. Shiner Bock donated beer, and several other companies donated products.

“We were able to donate 12 cases of salsa,” Kyle says. “We got some cool pictures back of a three-star general and others holding the jar. It is a tremendous honor to be included in something like that. The guy (from Tyler) asked me if I wanted to make a trip out there next year, so I definitely am planning on going. West Point just looks like a really cool atmosphere to see a football game and all the tradition that goes with that.”

For the Lancaster family, probably the best part of their company is that they are able to combine all their talents to make the business work. They like the idea of keeping it in the family.

“We want to do something special for our kids, my daughter, Kyler, and Kraig and Tracye’s daughter, Berkley, and son, Drew,” Kyle says.

With the popularity of their products, it’s pretty apparent that they will be able to do just that.

It was an odd sight, using a Cadillac as a cutting horse. John Harding, the driver, pointed at a cow and calf about 50 yards away as we drove across the dry and scruffy pasture.

“Bohn, get out and sit on the fender,” he instructed as he slowed to a stop.

“When I get along side that calf, jump off and grab it.”

As a green city kid helping out on Harding’s spread south of Lubbock in 1966, I didn’t know enough to argue. I swung a leg over the double headlights and stuck my fingers in the grille to hold on. John stepped on the gas.

The cow had seen enough of Harding’s Sedan Deville to stay fairly calm as we approached. As he slowed near the calf, I played bulldogger and slid off running. In a couple steps, I wrapped an arm around the calf’s neck and thve two of us came to a tangled stop. Harding pulled up, lowered the front passenger window, and yelled, “Get in the back seat with the calf!”

I pushed and pulled the bawling critter into the car—it was all legs and hair and slobber. I sorta sat there and hugged the terrified animal. John drove back to the pens as if he had nothing more than two rowdy teenagers in the back seat.

I was in graduate school at Tech in 1966, working on a master’s in government and paying some of the bills as a teaching assistant. Harding was on the Tech economics faculty and provided welcome adult advice to my fraternity.

He also farmed sorghum and cotton, and ran a cow-calf operation on land that he leased from his wife Lorene’s family in Lynn County near Tahoka. His was a shoestring enterprise in a cowboy boot business, with only one full-time hand, a one-armed man named Q.T. With several other fraternity members, I provided free labor on the weekends. The work was intriguing and perhaps something I might want to pursue full-time.

By February 1967, I had finished my course work and needed only to wrap up my thesis. I had started to think of my future, at least that part beyond my student draft deferment, which ran through the end of year. I talked with Harding about how a young man, whose family had no land, might succeed in the farm and ranch business. “I’m not sure,” he said in his distinctive, dry tone. But he did offer a chance to measure my naive interests against reality. “I’ll pay you $200 a month, and you can live with Lorene and me. You can help Q.T.” Thus began my youthful flirtation with farming and ranching.

While my family had lived on an avocado farm in Orange County, Calif., when my father’s oil business took him away from Houston for 10 years, I knew little about row crops and cattle. Harding first put me to work mending fence, and stretching barb wire was simple compared to battling the rattlesnakes. I graduated to horseback chores, and Harding lent me an old saddle and bridle. He pointed to an ornery, proud-cut gelding and said, “Be careful with him. He thinks he’s still a stallion.”

Q.T. handled most of the farming. John believed that the man’s mother called him a “cutie” when he was young, and it stuck. He lost his left arm to a grain auger, a painful and messy affair. Although illiterate, he was a hard worker and could hook up a disc harrow to the tractor with one hand and go to work. His handicap never bothered him when he and his friends went coyote hunting at night. They’d have a few beers, drive a pickup through the pasture, and look for coyotes to freeze in the headlights.

One morning, I drove by the old bracero shack that was Q.T.’s home. He walked out the door with his ring finger stuck in a bullet hole in his gut. “Mr. Mike,” he struggled to say, “my girlfriend done shot me.”

“Why did she shoot you?” I asked, as we got in my car.

“I’se cheatin’ on her.” I drove him to a Lubbock hospital and he was back at work the next week.

One evening while Lorene was frying steaks, I talked with Harding about how I might find a real job on a ranch. Through his myriad Tech connections, he arranged for me to interview at the 6666 Ranch in Guthrie. I was mostly all hat and no horse then, and made a greenhorn error while riding around the ranch in a pickup with two 6666 cowboys. I had a wad of Red Man in my cheek and got stuck in the middle seat. No place to spit.

The manager offered me a job riding fence at $300 a month, plus a bunk in a line camp. I quickly realized there were limits to my dreams of cowboying on the open range. I drove back to Lubbock, needing another plan.

The closest I had come to a working horse before my ranching adventure was running behind the Red Raider at football games.

After a second counseling session with Harding, I drove out to Lubbock Feedlot on the east side of town and asked for a job.

John’s theory was that my inexperience wouldn’t keep me from learning the feedlot business.

I purposely didn’t tell the manager that I’d been to college, much less grad school. I hired on at $3.00 an hour and my first job was to ride pens looking for sick cattle. Every morning, I caught a mount in the horse pens and joined several other guys riding through 50,000 head of cattle. It was a prairie pas de deux—opening a gate on horseback, wheeling through, and then closing the gate—over and over. As the winter settled in, the concrete lanes between the pens became icy traps for the riders, especially when a steer bolted from a group. Although I had no mishaps, my inexperience on horseback became clear to the boss. He reassigned me to a crew that processed incoming cattle. My options seemed be narrowing to cowboying on foot.

Harding had taught me the rudiments of working a squeeze chute, as well as dehorning, branding, and castrating bull calves with a pocketknife. But I soon learned that doing all of that a couple hundred times a day wasn’t that romantic.

Within a few weeks, I had become the gang foreman. My organizational skills had blossomed amid the disappointments of my horsemanship, and the motley crew of a dozen drunks and transients needed constant leadership. Plus, I spoke un poco de español.

We treated the incoming cattle with antibiotics and growthinducing hormones—no organic beef in that outfit—tipped horns for their collective safety, and branded them as a means of keeping the lots together. We used a ghastly clamping device—a Burdizzo— to bloodlessly castrate young bulls. Years later, it was a topic that always produced a titter at Washington, D.C., cocktail parties when I reminisced about my brief time in the cattle “bidness.”

My crew also helped sort cattle headed for the Swift packing house next door, counting heads and weighing them. Long buggy whips and electric prods helped, but on a frigid dawn, it didn’t match the fun that I had at Harding’s ranch.

I also learned another skill—scooping manure with a Bobcat, a small front loader. We had to periodically clean the pens and transport the stuff to huge piles, where it “cooked.” Steam rose from

the heaps during the winter, adding to a scene drawn from Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle. At least I was, um, mounted for that chore.

I also helped the veterinarian with sick and ailing cattle.

Respiratory problems were common in the crowded pens, but steers can have kidney stones just like people. Also, cows suffer calving problems, and my stories about breech births and full-arm examinations never failed to repulse my wife years afterward. But at least I can make small talk now with a suburban vet when I take my dog in for shots.

After about ten months, my adventure was stalling. It was Christmastime, 1967, and I was poor, cold, smelly, and discouraged. By then I had realized that I could never buy a feedlot with the money I earned working in one. But the clincher came in the mail—my draft notice. “Greeting: You are hereby ordered to report for induction . . .”

I’d had my fill of living in the mud by then, so I joined the Navy to stay out of the Army. I earned a commission in April 1969, and left for Vietnam that summer. In Saigon, I boarded an old DC-3 prop plane that carried both soldiers and locals to the Mekong Delta and back. At the aircraft’s first scheduled stop, a Vietnamese woman leading a small calf clambered up a loading ramp. She had trouble with the animal on the metal deck, but I knew what to do.

I grabbed the calf’s lead rope and its tail, and steered it toward the row of nylon sling seats along the fuselage side. She and I sat down with the calf wedged between us. She nodded approvingly, but must have wondered where I had learned to sit with calves.

Seth Doege found Eric Ward on a short pass, and he outran a defender for a 35-yard scoring play to pull the Red Raiders even at 31 with just more than a minute remaining.

Michael Carter intercepted two of Doege’s passes in the fourth quarter before the tying score, but Minnesota couldn’t convert either of the turnovers into points.

The Red Raiders (8-5) got their third straight bowl win to wrap up a month that began with coach Tommy Tuberville’s abrupt departure for the job at Cincinnati. Texas Tech has hired Kliff

Kingsbury to replace him, but interim coach Chris Thomsen led the team against Minnesota (6-7). Kingsbury was at the game, watching from a suite.

Doege threw for 271 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score in front of a crowd that included 1977 Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell and former Tech coach Spike Dykes.

Philip Nelson threw for 138 yards and two scores for the Gophers, who were in a bowl game for the first time since 2009.

The Red Raiders returned to a bowl after having their 18-season bowl streak snapped last year.

A 1-yard touchdown pass from Nelson to Drew Goodger gave Minnesota a 31-24 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Texas Tech led 24-17 at halftime, but couldn’t do anything offensively in the second half until the last couple of minutes.

It was an ugly game for the Red Raiders, who had 13 penalties for 135 yards and lost the tight end Jace Amaro when he was ejected for throwing a punch.

Jakeem Grant ran for what was initially ruled a touchdown for Tech late in the third quarter. Amaro threw a punch at Derrick Wells in the end zone on the play and was ejected.

After the penalty, the play was reviewed and overturned. Doege threw an incomplete pass before Tech made a 32-yard field goal. But the Red Raiders had a false start penalty on the play and had to kick again and this time the Gophers blocked it.

Nelson threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Devin Crawford-Tufts, who was left uncovered in the end zone, to tie it at 24 early in the third quarter.

Donnell Kirkwood scored on a 3-yard run to leave Minnesota up 17-14 early in the second quarter.

Texas Tech had a first-and-goal at the Minnesota 2 after a pass-interference call on the Gophers. But Texas Tech had to settle for a field goal after a rush for a 3-yard loss and two penalties.

Minnesota’s next drive started out well before turning ugly. The Gophers had made two first downs before Gray was sacked for a loss of seven yards. Kirkwood ran for 17 yards on the next play, but Minnesota received two 15-yard penalties on the play, one for a personal foul on lineman Zac Epping, to make it secondand-42. Epping received a second personal foul penalty on the next play to bring up third-and-49.

The Red Raiders capitalized on their great field position when Doege spun away from a defender in the backfield and leaped over another Gopher near the goal line on a 4-yard touchdown run. Tech converted a fourth-and-6 play on that drive, and led 24-17 at halftime.

Minnesota’s Rodrick Williams Jr. scored on a 2-yard run to give the Gophers a 10-7 lead in the first quarter.

Doege lost his helmet on a 5-yard scramble on Tech’s next drive and had to go out for one play. He was replaced by Michael Brewer, who found Derreck Edwards for a 13-yard touchdown pass to give the Red Raiders a 14-10 lead.

Minnesota’s Troy Stoudermire returned the opening kickoff 26 yards to break the NCAA record for career kickoff return yards. He finished the game with 111 yards to push his total to 3,615.

The Gophers ended that drive with a 41-yard field goal to make it 3-0.

Texas Tech’s Grant returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown to put Texas Tech up 7-3.

Development & Family Studies, ’84 Ph.D.) Blacksburg, Va., is a professor of human development, director of the Institute for Society, Culture and Environment and director of the Center for Gerontology at Virginia Tech. While serving as the 2012 Gary Andrews Visiting Fellow, she delivered the keynote address at the Australian Association of Gerontology National Conference and followed that with a series of seminars in four different Australian states. She was also awarded the Distinguished Mentorship in Gerontology Award by the Gerontological Society of America.

She is an adjunct professor for the department of internal medicine and department of psychiatry at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

Kathleen Campbell Walker (BA History) El Paso, Texas, an attorney with the firm Cox Smith Matthews Inc., was selected by Texas Lawyer magazine as its “Go-To Lawyer” for immigration law. Kathleen is internationally recognized for her experience with business immigration, consular processing and admissibility and immigration security issues. Studies, ’88 Ph.D. Industrial Engineering) Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Cheryl Wilhelmsen recently had their book entitled “Risk Assessment Tools, Techniques and Their Application” published by John Wiley and Sons.

Ostrom is the director of the industrial technology program at the University of Idaho.

Hank has been named coordinator of law enforcement programs at Amarillo College where he oversees the Panhandle Regional Law Enforcement Academy and in-service training for peace officers in the top 26 counties of the Texas panhandle. Hank is married to Denise McCann Blanchard (BS Home Economics Education) who is the director of Community Partnerships with the Amarillo Independent School District.

1997 Noel Kersh (BBA Management

Information Systems) Tomball, Texas, has been named partner with Pathway Forensics LLC, a Houstonbased digital forensics, computer investigations and electronic discovery firm. He has more than 15 years of computer forensics, e-discovery and information technology experience. Kersh has helped clients obtain injunctions and temporary restraining orders for theft of confidential client information and has provided testimony in high profile cases. He has been featured on CNN, TruTV and Discovery Channel’s “Investigate Discovery.” Kersh is an EnCase Certified Examiner and an AccessData

T h e T e xas T e c h Meat Judging team won the school’s 10th national championship in November at the American Meat Science Association’s International Meat Judging Contest held in Dakota City, Neb. The team won the beef judging, lamb judging, pork judging, specifications, placings and reasons divisions. It finished second in total beef and beef grading. The team won the contest by a 50-point margin and also won five of the six national contests during the 2012 meat-judging season.

Bo Hutto , a junior, was high-ranked individual. Valerie Manning , a junior, placed second, and Colton Christian , a junior, placed fifth. In the alternate division, Texas Tech boasted three of the top 10 individuals overall. Heather Rode , a junior, was highranked individual; Tanner Adams , a junior, was fourth; and Steven Ebeling , a junior, was sixth.

Kaitlin Spraberry , a senior agricultural education major, spent Fall 2012 as a music strategy and marketing intern for CMT (Country Music Television), a Nashville-based cable television network. She helped screen new music videos, edited promotional materials for the web, and managed social media accounts. She also attended meetings and tapings.

Faik Aleskerov , a graduate student in Texas Tech’s Rawls College of Business, won first place in the master section of the California Class Championship in Santa Clara over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Aleskerov is a member of the Texas Tech Chess A-team, the reigning intercollegiate national champion team.

He has been playing chess for 21 years. The tournament victory fulfills Aleskerov’s final requirement for the title of International Master, which was officially confirmed in January at the meeting of the World Chess Federation (FIDE). Aleskerov says he now has his sights set on achieving Grandmaster status, the highest in chess.

The team also won the Best Respondent’s Brief award at the event, which qualified them to compete for the national finals at the National Black Law Students Association 45th Annual National Convention.

T h e 2 0 11 - 2 0 12 T e xas Tech University advertising team was recently awarded an Emmy Award by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Lone Star Emmy Chapter in the College/University Student Production-Commercial category for its Nissan commercial.

Taylor Shofner , senior advertising and visual communications major from Lubbock, wrote, directed, produced and edited the commercials and entered them into the Lone Star Emmy competition.

The ad team is a group of students that work on a campaign every year for different companies. The 2011-2012 team worked on a campaign for Nissan targeting multicultural millennials (18-29-year-olds).

Their campaign won third place at the District 10 student advertising competition in Shreveport, La. Other members of the 2011-2012 ad team that traveled to Shreveport include Nicole Sever , account executive, and Kyle Parker , director of photography. The creative concept team was Rachel Bottlinger and Zach Dominguez.

and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) received the 2011-2012 Role Model Chapter award for outstanding professional development during a recent National SACNAS Conference.

SACNAS is dedicated to helping underrepresented minorities advance their academic and professional careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The chapter meetings also encourage professional development by allowing members to receive information on various topics such as graduate school, financial planning, presentation skills and research internship opportunities.

This is the second year in a row the chapter has been recognized. In 2011, it received the Role Model Chapter award for outstanding sustainability.
