A Special Masked Rider

2013-14 Masked Rider, long will be remembered for his service.

As the official mascot he has made more than 257 public appearances and traveled about 21,000 miles this past year. It was publicized that he broke the record for number of appearances.

The junior animal science major from Lubbock, was the first to ride Fearless Champion for an entire year of service.

He already was a member of the Masked Rider family, as he volunteered on the Masked Rider field safety crew for the past two years.

“It’s bittersweet,” he told the audience at the Transfer of the Reins Ceremony on April 18. “It was an unforgettable life experience. As the Masked Rider, I strive to leave an impact on everyone I met, but the truth is, it was all these people that left an impact on me.”

“It’s been a humbling experience,” he told me. “You see how much this program means to Tech alumni. Once you are in the job, you see how much is involved.

“It was a great life experience and it has made me a better person. I have made many new friends and I have some great memories. Texas Tech has been great to me and it was a great way to go out.”

“Corey has never met a stranger,” according to Stephanie Rhode, Spirit Program director. “I admire the way he carried out his responsibilities and reached out to sponsors, fans and the community,“ she said.

She also pointed out that he was obsessive about keeping the truck and trailer spotless. He had 15 carwashes in one month.

Waggoner thanked the safety team, the staff from The Center for Campus Life, Robert Rhode (photographer), Baker Chapman (ferrier), Sam Jackson, Ph.D. (academic adviser from the Department of Animal & Food Sciences who works with the horse), Jennifer Ritz (who wrote an article about him in our magazine and filmed a video about him) and his assistants Colton Baker, Caitlyn Browning and Mackenzie White. White was selected to be the next Masked Rider. (See p. 12.) He especially thanked Rhode for making it “an unforgettable life experience.”

He honored his father, Travis, “for making me the man I am today” and his mother, Annette, for “making me the horseman I am today.”

He also thanked the family of Joe Kirk Fulton, the original Masked Rider in 1951, who passed away last year.

“Grown men tell me they tear up every time I charge onto the field,” he said. “Fearless Champion and I have become like brothers. It has been an honor to serve as the 52nd Masked Rider.”

“No matter what challenges we face in life, we will always ride fearless,” he concluded.

At the ceremony, he was presented with a scrapbook and a belt buckle from the Center for Campus Life along with a class ring from the Texas Tech Alumni Association and a letter jacket from the athletics department.

He determined at the beginning of his term that “I’m going to do something special this year by breaking the record for appearances. I wanted to 6

set a high standard for those to follow, and I hope it will be broken and new standards will be set.”

Those 257 appearances will be hard to match. He also maintained more than a 3.0 grade average during the last year.

The son of Travis and Annette Waggoner, Corey attended New Deal High School and graduated from South Plains College in 2011 with an associate’s degree in science before transferring to Texas Tech.

Corey is a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, the American Paint Horse Association, the American Association of Sheriff Posses & Riding Club, the National Association of Riding Clubs and Sheriff Posses, Better Barrel Races and a former member of the National Barrel Horse Association.

Not just anyone is even eligible to try out for this position. In order to try out for the coming year, a Tech student must meet the following criteria.

1. Must be enrolled as a Tech student during the Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 semesters and have a cumulative total of at least 45 credit hours. (A minimum of 12 hours must have been completed in residence at Texas Tech. CLEP and AP hours may go toward the overall total, but will not be counted for residency hours.)

2. Undergraduate students must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours; graduate students must be enrolled in a minimum of nine semester hours.

3. Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75. (GPAs are not rounded up, and adjusted cumulative GPA is not used.)

4. Must have considerable equestrian experience.

5. Graduation will not occur before May 2015.

6. Must plan on being in Lubbock during the summer following selection.

7. Must be willing to accept all responsibilities of the position, which include year-round public relations activities.

8. Must be insurable to drive the Masked Rider truck.

9. Must pass a criminal background check.

The lead sponsor of the Masked Rider program is Wells Fargo Bank. They have provided $375,000 to the program to date and are committed to $80,000 over the next three years. They have increased the Masked Rider Scholarship to $10,000.

People TWO TEX A S TEC H University professors received the highest recognition bestowed by the university, the Horn professorship. William L. Hase, Ph.D., professor of chemistry; and Jingyu Lin, Ph.D., professor of electrical and computer engineering and Linda F. Whitacre Endowed Chair, had their appointments approved by the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents at its February meeting. Hase has been a member of the Texas Tech faculty since 2004 and has worked as an instructor, program officer and interim department chair in his 20-year career.

Lin joined Texas Tech in 2008 and is co-director of the Center for Nanophotonics, where she conducts research regarding the manipulation of photons-electrons in nano-scale materials for innovative photonic devices and emerging technologies.

TE X A S TEC H U N I V ERS I T Y System Chancellor Kent Hance announced that Richard Lange, M.D., has been selected for the position of founding president and new dean at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso. He will begin his duties July 1. Lange served as vice chairman of medicine and director of educational programs at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio. A tenured professor at UTHSC at San Antonio, continues to hold a faculty appointment at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore.

MAX MILLER , Ph.D., an associate professor in the Department of Animal & Food Sciences in the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources, received his 50-year pin at the Texas Tech University Length of Service awards ceremony in April. Miller received his bachelor’s degree in dairy management in 1958, then went on to receive his master’s from Michigan State University. In 1960, he returned to Texas Tech to teach dairy science. In 1968 he returned to Michigan State University, where he earned his doctoral degree in food science in 1971. By 1972, Miller moved his family back to his family’s farm in Brownfield, and he accepted a position back at Texas Tech. Over the past half century, one of the things Miller has been most well-known for is guiding students to internships and post-college careers with companies such as Frito-Lay, Kraft Foods, Coca-Cola and a host of custom-food plants, ice cream plants, wineries and breweries.

TE X A S TEC H U N I V ER SI T Y officials announced in February a $1 million gift from Michael Herd ’10 to the Bob L. Herd Department of Petroleum Engineering in the Edward E. Whitacre, Jr. College of Engineering. The university has named the Michael Herd Fracturing and Production Laboratory located in the new Terry Fuller Petroleum Engineering Research Building in his honor. As part of the Bob L. Herd Department of Petroleum Engineering, the new laboratory will serve as a cornerstone for the department and help build a state-of-the-art research space to study hydraulic fracturing and production operations.

Michael, who received his bachelor of science in university studies, is vice president of Herd Producing Co., and president of the Bob L. Herd Foundation, which was established by his grandfather, Bob L. Herd, a 1957 Texas Tech petroleum engineering graduate and namesake of the Bob L. Herd Department of Petroleum Engineering. In 2008, the university accepted a $15 million donation from Bob, resulting in the first academic department to be named at Texas Tech.

The Texas Tech University Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering honored distinguished alumni at a luncheon April 11. The 2014 recipients of the Distinguished Engineer Award were: Kenneth Baker, Lori Sisco Flansburg, Erna Grasz, Louis Gritzo, Victoria Richards Harkins, Wade Smith and Lloyd Whetzel.

The Distinguished Engineer Award was established during the 1966-1967 academic year to recognize the most outstanding alumni of the college. Since that time, 219 former students have received this honor.

KENNETH BAKER graduated in 1965 with a B.S. in chemical en-

gineering, and he was the first recipient of a master of engineering degree from Texas Tech in 1970. He spent 28 years working for Celanese, the United States Environmental Protection Agency and two energy consultancies. In 1993, Baker, along with his business partner John O’Brien, founded Baker & O’Brien, Inc., an international energy consultancy with offices in Dallas, Houston and London.

LORI SISCO FLANSBURG graduated in 1978 with a B.S. in

mechanical engineering. After graduation, she joined Texas Instruments in Sherman, Texas, performing design engineering tasks to support the manufacture of ground support radar systems and laser guided missiles. After completing her master’s, Flansburg then worked on structural analysis on the B-2 Bomber for LTV Aerospace in Grand Prairie. Lockheed Martin Aeronautics in 1991, and until 1999, she was the F-22 Forward Fuselage Stress Technical Lead. Today she is a Lockheed Martin Fellow in Marietta, Ga.

ERNA GRASZ graduated in 1985 with a B.S. in electrical engineering. After graduation, Grasz worked in diverse industries, including medical device design, defense research and semiconductor capital equipment. She co-founded Asante Africa Foundation in 2006 with two African women she met while in Tanzania and Kenya on travel. In 2010, she left the corporate world to manage the organization full time. As CEO of Asante Africa Foundation, she has overseen programs developed that have educated more than 36,000 students in 39 communities in two countries.

LOUIS GRITZO graduated with a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering in 1988, 1990 and 1992, respectively. After completing his doctoral degree in 1992, Gritzo spent 13 years of his career at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M., where he rose from technical staff member to manager. In 2006, Gritzo relocated to Massachusetts to join FM Global, one of the world’s largest commercial property insurers. He is vice president and manager of research for FM Global.

VICTORIA RICHARDS HARKINS graduated in 1992 with a B.S. in

biochemistry, and master’s and doctoral degrees in civil engineering in 1995 and 1998, respectively. After graduation, Harkins took a position as an engineer with the State of Texas in Austin. While working for the state, Harkins became a designated expert in water and wastewater utility service and served as the state’s expert on numerous occasions. In 2002, she went to work in the private sector for Espey Consultants. In 2006, she opened her own civil and environmental engineering company, Harkins Engineering, Inc. She currently provides professional civil and environmental

engineering services for King Ranch, Inc., and provides municipal engineering services for several municipalities.

WADE SMITH graduated in 1989 with a B.S. in mechanical en-

gineering. Smith began his career with the Central and South West Corporation (CSW) in 1989 as an engineer. CSW merged with American Electric Power (AEP) in 2000. He then became director of gas turbine and joint venture-generation. From 2000 to 2004, he was executive director of IPP and wind, and had responsibility for 12 independent power projects. Moving to AEP Transmission in 2008, he worked in several areas and currently is president and chief operating officer for AEP Texas. He oversees distribution operations serving more than 1 million AEP customers and oversees the operating unit’s safety, customer services, marketing, communications, community affairs, governmental affairs and regulatory functions.

LLOYD WHETZEL graduated in 1993 with a B.S. in electri-

cal engineering technology. He worked for 22 years at Texas Instruments’ Lubbock wafer fab, holding engineering and management positions in process engineering, equipment engineering, and manufacturing. In 1998, TI closed the Lubbock facility.

He and a small group of TI employees made the decision to leave TI, remain in Lubbock, keep the fab operational, and convert it to an analog/mixed-signal foundry, which became X-FAB Texas, Inc. Whetzel is the president and CEO of X-FAB Texas, and has been a managing director of the company since its inception.

through the arches Sen. Robert Duncan Named Sole Finalist for TTU System Chancellor T H E T E X A S T E C H University System Board of Regents announced May 19 that Texas Sen. Robert Duncan has been named the sole finalist for the position of chancellor.

Now that Duncan has been named the sole finalist for the chancellor position, state law requires that 21 days must pass before final action can be taken by the Board of Regents on his employment. Duncan’s start date as chancellor is expected to be July 1.

Duncan, 60, is a lifelong West Texan.

Before calling Lubbock home, he was raised in Vernon, Texas. He is the only son of five children born to Frank L. Duncan and Robena Formby Duncan.

While completing his undergraduate degree at Texas Tech University, he served as student body president. Duncan went on to receive his law degree from the Texas Tech University School of Law. He was elected to District 84 in the Texas House of Representatives in 1992.

In 1996, he won a special election to the Texas Senate. Duncan served on the Senate Finance Committee during each legislative session since 1999. He also served on the budget conference committee, which develops the final appropriations bill.

Duncan has served as chairman of the State Affairs Committee since 2004. He was elected and served as president pro tempore of the Texas Senate during the 81st Legislative Session. Duncan also has been a member of the Natural Resources Committee, the Committee on Higher Education and the Education Committee.

search, Texas Tech University has named W. Brent Lindquist as dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. Lindquist, who begins his role July 15, is currently the deputy provost at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, N.Y., an Association of American Universities institution and Carnegie-classified very high research university. Prior to his current appointment as deputy provost, Lindquist served as chair of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Stony Brook University.

News TE X A S TEC H U N I V ERS I T Y Health Sciences Center of the Permian Basin in Midland has begun a new Telemedicine program to respond to high patient volume.

Patients who have been placed on a lengthy waiting list to see a psychiatrist can utilize the new Tele-Psychiatry program. The Tele-Psychiatry program is a video chat offered to those who wish to receive some form of psychiatric treatment, but don’t want to be on a long waiting list for outpatient treatment. The patients who utilize the service will go to the office of the Texas Tech Physicians of the Permian Basin in Midland for their appointment, then speak live on a computer monitor with a psychiatrist located in Lubbock. TTUHSC features one of the longestrunning telemedicine programs in the nation, with healthcare providers seeing between 450-500 patients per month remotely. The Tele-Psychiatry program is the first of its kind to be offered in the Permian Basin.

Texas Tech University recently was ranked in Military Times’ “Best for Vets: Business Schools 2014.” This is the first time an individual college at Texas Tech has been ranked for serving veterans. The Rawls College of Business was ranked 13 out of 64 other business colleges across the country. The organization selecting schools focused on culture and curriculum that caters to military veterans when conducting and scoring the survey.

The donation was made to the new Terry Fuller Petroleum Engineering Research Building in the Bob L. Herd Department of Petroleum Engineering, where the university has named a lab Oxy Enhanced Oil Recovery Laboratory. The Oxy Enhanced Oil Recovery Laboratory will allow students and faculty members to review novel techniques and procedures in oil and gas extraction that will significantly improve the economic performances of oil fields.

T E X A S T E C H U NIV E R S I T Y announced April 11 that it received the distinction of the first Purple Heart University in Texas. The honor was granted by the Military Order of the Purple Heart to Tech for participating in the National Day of Remembrance Roll Call held on Veterans Day; organizing the largest single gathering of Purple Heart recipients during a football game in 2013; and by providing service to wounded warriors through Military and Veterans Programs, Student Disability Services and the Veterans Administration.

Texas Tech is one of only three universities in the nation to receive the Purple Heart designation.

Tech University announced a $1 million gift from ConocoPhillips to establish a student recruitment and support center in the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering. The new center will be named the ConocoPhillips Center for Engineering Enrichment and Diversity for a period of five years in recognition of the company’s contribution. Located in the Engineering Center building, the ConocoPhillips Center for Engineering Enrichment and Diversity will enhance recruiting efforts among historically underrepresented groups and serve as a central location for student academic support services within the Whitacre College of Engineering. The center will also unite existing programs to better serve current and prospective engineering students at Texas Tech in support of the college’s goal to increase student diversity over the next five years.

T UITION I S I NC REA S I N G for the Texas Tech University System. The Board of Regents in March approved a tuition and fees increase of 3.95 percent. The increase goes into effect in Fall 2014.

T E X AS TEC H U N I V ERS I TY was ranked among the top 100 in the country for its engineering and business graduate programs, according to the 2015 U.S. News & World Report Graduate School Rankings. The rankings, which were released in March, listed the Rawls College of Business at No. 87 among “Best Business Schools” and the Edward E. Murray Distinguished Professor at the TTUHSC School of Medicine and director of the TTUHSC Center of Tropical Medicine & Infectious Diseases, received the grant for his research on a vaccine for schistosomiasis. The disease isn’t found in the United States, but is endemic in 74 developing countries and affects more than 200 million people, with another 800 million people at risk. Schistosomiasis is caused by a parasite and is contracted through contact with contaminated water.

The parasite burrows into the skin, matures into another state, and then migrates to the lungs and liver, where it matures into the adult form. Sustained reduction in the disease spectrum and transmission can only be obtained by long-term protection through vaccination.

NEW MASKED-RIDER TAKES REINS

M AC K E N Z I E W H I T E I S the 53rd student to represent Texas Tech University as the Masked Rider. White, a native of Marble Falls, Texas, accepted the reins on April 18 to Fearless Champion from outgoing Masked Rider Corey Waggoner. White, a junior from Marble Falls, is majoring in agricultural and applied economics and minoring in Arabic and Spanish.

“Becoming the Texas Tech University Masked Rider is truly a dream come true,” White says. “I am honored to represent Texas Tech University as an ambassador throughout the year and to lead the Texas Tech community in spirit and service. Becoming the Masked Rider is something that I have dreamed of since high school—in fact; it was one of the reasons that I ultimately decided to attend Texas Tech University, alongside Tech’s reputable academics and student-life culture. I am excited to begin this year of adventures and engagement with the Texas Tech community of fans, alumni, and future Red Raiders.”

White’s love of horses has been a life-long affair. She began competing at the age of eight in a variety of horse shows, from 4-H to world championship breed shows. She competes in both Western and English events including Western horsemanship, Western pleasure, English equitation, jumping and Western speed events and reining. She also judged horses and is a member of the Texas Tech Equestrian Team, where she competes in the advanced division through the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association.

Following graduation in May 2015, White plans to attend law school and specialize in agricultural law.

In the coming year she will travel thousands of miles bearing our banners far and wide, promoting spirit and goodwill for Texas Tech at athletic events and other school and civic appearances throughout Texas.

As a director of the Climate Science Center at Texas Tech University, part of the Department of Interior’s South-

Central Climate Science Center, Hayhoe develops new ways to quantify the potential impacts of human activities at the regional scale. An expert reviewer on the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, her life’s work has been dedicated to discovering and communicating the realities of a changing climate to those who will be affected most by it.

outside in a comfort zone More than ever, Americans are enjoying the good life—right in their own backyards. People seem to spend more time at home than in past years. “Staycations” are becoming a common way to spend time away from work, and, of course, a favorite spot for relaxing and entertaining is the outdoors.

The media has made popular the idea of creating comfortable outdoor spaces. Trends for creating outdoor spaces and decorating them abound on TV shows, in magazines and, of course, on the Internet.

One Texas Tech alumna has seen the need for high-quality outdoor furniture. Katrina Hoff Kohnle has made it her mission to help people find pieces that provide comfortable seating, look great and can withstand the elements.

“The market continues to evolve,” she says. “First I saw large outdoor kitchens, then outdoor fireplaces with deep seating and lately an emphasis on outdoor TVs.” Kohnle owns Out on the Patio, an outdoor furniture company in Lubbock, Texas, which she founded in 2006. The store features patio chairs and couches, swings, tables, umbrellas, fire pits and fire tables and, of course, décor.

its her well, as she is a go-getter with a large to juggle many tasks at once. Keeping up with top of trends in the business is important.

“M

y husband, Joe, and I always had wanted to start our own business,” she says. “I was working in pharmaceutical sales in 2006 and was told during a training session that all part-time employees were to be let go soon.

After I got that news, I thought that it was the time to start something new.”

Kohnle earned a bachelor’s degree in home economics education from Texas Tech in 1988. She always had an interest in design and grew up reading Southern Living and House Beautiful. She and her sisters would turn down the corners of pages of rooms and food that inspired them.

“I knew I had to find a niche market,” Kohnle says about starting a new career after sales. “I didn’t want to do food. I was interested in home design, but I wasn’t sure which direction to go.

“One day, I overhead moms at the pool talking about wanting good patio furniture, which was hard to find,” she says. “I realized that there were several companies that specialized in the indoor market and were mobile (going to clients’ homes) and wondered if I could do the same thing with outdoor furniture.”

While traveling for her sales job, she went to every outdoor store in the cities she visited for ideas. No one in Lubbock had much outdoor furniture, and if they did, it probably was seasonal, she noticed.

She saw a need for someone to sell high-quality patio furnishings that are heavier, more durable and designed on a larger scale than similar items found in many big box stores.

That first year she was in business, she was asked to design the patio for some of the Parade of Homes houses. Because she hadn’t yet starting carrying the lines she does today, she bought furniture from stores in town.

That gig got her in with the right customers, many of whom became repeat customers.

Then she sought out large, high-end furniture companies that offer merchandise that can withstand the elements in this part of the world. She is the only dealer in West Texas for some of the lines, which means her customer base is larger than just Lubbock.

From 2007 to 2009, she sold furniture out of a pool house showroom in her backyard because she realized that people wanted to sit down to test the chairs and couches. In 2009, she leased a 4,000-square-foot warehouse and brought in more furniture.

Two years later, it was time to move out of the warehouse. Business was growing, and Kohnle needed a better space to show off her wares. Out on the Patio eventually moved to a showroom that expanded a couple of times. It soon grew to include 8,800-square-foot warehouse.

nce Kohnle started the business, she realized she had quite a learning curve. But, it wasn’t insurmountable.

“I had no retail background—I taught myself,” she says. “I had spent eight years teaching, then 10 years in sales. I was with The Pampered Chef for three years. In the furniture business, I had to go find customers—it was direct sales.”

Sheer determination and a good sense of humor helped get Kohnle through some misadventures along the way to success.

“My first delivery from a furniture company was in January,” she says. “It was sleeting and 18 degrees. It was to be unloaded at a storage facility. The 18-wheeler driver wasn’t supposed to offload, so I found help, and we offloaded the truck ourselves.

“I got used to delivering and assembling my own furniture. I took a large oval table to one lady’s house. Most people stayed while I put their furniture together, but this woman left. I was in the alley assembling the table, and it fell on me. It was really hot outside, and all the dogs in the backyards nearby started barking. I called my niece to come help me.

“Another time, I had chairs blow out of the back of the truck while on a delivery. If someone had been behind me, the chairs would have gone through the windshield.

“I quickly learned how to tie down and wrap the furniture so it was secure,” she says.

T

oday, Out on the Patio is a thriving business with a 8,000-square-foot showroom with an attached warehouse.

Her showroom has natural lighting and is cheery and inviting.

When you walk in the door, you are struck by the bright and fun colors.

She has been told by several company representatives that her showroom is the best they have seen.

Just on the side of the showroom, Kohnle recently has completed a large outdoor showroom complete with a pergola, outdoor fireplace and lots of space for outdoor furniture. She plans to use this space for hosting events.

When she is not working, Kohnle enjoys spending time with her family—in their backyard—and traveling.

She and husband Joe, who earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Texas Tech in 1987, have three children, sons Ethan, Drew and daughter Addison.

Still, Kohnle loves being an entrepreneur. The role suits her well, as she is a go-getter with a large personality. A fast learner and has the ability to juggle many tasks at once. Keeping up with customers’ likes and dislikes and staying on top of trends in the business is important.

“I am very hands-on,” she says. “I usually hire Tech students to help in the showroom. They may start out helping a customer, but I usually get involved, too.”

Looking back at her records and at the growth of her company, Kohnle sees how much the business has grown in eight-plus years. She could start to slow down, sit back and enjoy her success, but doing so is not in her makeup.

Shada Norris Brazile can make a hummingbird look a little sluggish. As a mom, a cowgirl and a fashionista, her life is all about speed and energy, and she never slows down.

Getting to visit the home of the Brazile family is akin to visiting the home of the Major League Baseball World Series MVP—it’s a huge deal. The Braziles enjoy celebrity status in the world of rodeo, country music and Western fashion, and rightfully so.

Shada Norris Brazile was born into a rodeo and ranching family. She’s a superior barrel racer and a model, well known in the rodeo circuit for her riding ability, beauty and her avant-garde style. Her husband, Trevor Brazile, is a living legend; an 11-time winner of the World Champion All-Around Cowboy title—meaning he competes, and is the most successful, in at least two or more events. Due to their popularity and success, they have more sponsors than you can shake a stick at.

They’re kind of a big deal.

So, when I reached out to Shada about an interview for this magazine, I expected to be directed to a public relations firm.

I wasn’t.

I dealt with Shada one-on-one and was thrilled to discover she’s gracious, accommodating and down-to-earth, just like you’d expect a fellow Red Raider to be.

I got to visit Shada at her ranchito in Decatur, Texas. My visit took place in spring, in between rodeos for her. The Decatur area had received some rain, so it was lush and green, a fantastic backdrop to the sprawling barns and arenas on the Brazile’s spread.

I arrived a little early. Shada was still feeding her kids lunch, and she said I was welcome to explore the barn. I was eager to see their facilities and check out their horses—several were gone since Trevor was on the road competing in California.

But, I wasn’t disappointed. I entered the vast, quiet barn and found, tucked away in his stall, Dial It, Shada’s newest horse, the sweet bay that helped her secure the 2013 No. 8 spot in the world for barrel racing.

I stood at his stall, rubbing his forehead, and wondered, “Is there a better way to kick off an interview?”

Surely not…

DAYLIGHT’S BURNING It’s a buzzing alarm clock at 5 a.m. that reminds Shada ’00 that there’s work to be done. After a quick shower and shot of makeup, she heads upstairs to her loft office to begin working on her line of clothing she designs for Wrangler: All-Around Baby.

A couple hours later, she wrangles her two kiddos, Treston, 6, and Style, 4, out of bed and into the kitchen for a quick breakfast. Next comes homeschooling Treston from eight until noon, lunch for the kids, then Shada’s daily run before she heads out spend the remainder of the day with the horses. Her energy level is palpable.

“I love to run,” she says. “It’s important for me to stay in shape. I run from the house to the stop sign and back, every day.”

That’s saying something, considering the Braziles live on a winding, rural county road. I didn’t notice a stop sign in close proximity to their house.

“I also work to keep my core strong. I want him carrying as little weight as possible when we compete.”

“Him” refers to 8-year old Dial It. For the first time, the duo qualified for the 2013 National Finals Rodeo—the Super Bowl of rodeo—held every year in Las Vegas. Shada has owned Dial It since 2012.

“When I first got him, he was scared of steers,” she says, laughing. “I knew that wasn’t going to work. You can’t be a member of our family and be afraid of steers.”

Shada worked at acclimating Dial It to cattle, which was when she realized there was one thing that chilled his jitters every time.

“My kids are his calming thing,” Shada says. “He quiets down when they’re near him.”

In addition to familiarizing herself with her new ride’s personality, Shada focused on competing, which meant heavy training for Dial It, who’s still considered pretty young—he will likely hit his prime when he’s about 10. 2013 was the year she planned to hit it hard and qualify for the National Finals.

“I’m a runner, and I train him like I train myself,” she explains. “I wanted him to be in the best possible shape. While I worked with him, I was training, too.”

Shada considers Dial It the best horse she’s ever owned—she’s pictured here with him. Shada’s sense of style extends to her horses, as you can see, he’s sporting a colorful headstall and breast collar designed by Quincy Freeman, whose creations can be found on Quincy Designs Facebook page.

Shada has spent her life immersed in rodeo culture. Her stepfather is Roy Cooper, a famous rodeo cowboy who won a number of world titles. Her two brothers, Clif and Tuf Cooper, live down the road from her in Decatur. Both compete in professional rodeo as well.

Shada’s mother, Shari, lives in Decatur.

Part of the reason Shada chose to build her home where she did was because it meant being close to family.

TURN AND BURN The pair were in the best shape possible, a necessity for the grueling rodeo life.

“Last year we entered more than 75 rodeos,” Shada says of herself and husband Trevor. “When we left the house in June, I was 7th (in ranking). Then, one month later, I was 21st. Making the finals came down to the last two months of competition.”

Shada and Dial It pulled it off, and sailed into Las Vegas last December ranked No. 13.

“He’s the best horse I’ve ever had,” she says with a big smile. “Horses like him come along once in a lifetime. I’ve had a lot of good horses, and one great horse. My mom pointed out that our struggle made the finals that much more special.”

Since having kids in 2007 and 2010, Shada had stepped away from competitive riding and focused on being a mother and clothing designer. A typical year for the Braziles, who put family first, means moving into their tour bus for months of travel. They zigzag across the country, even into Canada, logging more than 70,000 miles hitting rodeo after rodeo, often competing in several a week. They have drivers who haul their horses along with them.

Even when they’re home, rest is a luxury. The couple works to keep themselves and their horses fit, and they have to remain mentally focused on winning. For Shada, the lifestyle fits her personality. She’s intrinsically energetic and spirited. She explained to me how she’s never been able to sit still, and has always known what she’s wanted and worked hard to achieve goals.

“I’ve always wanted things a certain way,” she says. “By the time I was 12 I was washing and folding my own clothes because I was so particular about how I wanted things.”

Shada also talked about her close relationship with her younger brothers, Clif and Tuf Cooper, which she says is as

much maternal as it is that of a sibling. In fact, her brothers live down the road from her now.

“I was quite a bit older when they were born,” she says.

Shada is eight years older than Clif, who’s 26, and 10 years older than Tuf, who’s 24. When she wasn’t chasing them around, she was engaged in some sort of contest.

“As a kid, I was never forced to participate,” she says of her upbringing. “I have always loved to compete. Growing up in Childress, it’s a small town and there weren’t a lot of places to go, so I was always active riding horses, playing basketball, tumbling and being a cheerleader.”

Shada was just a 3-year old when she began riding. By the time she was eight, she was riding cutting horses alongside her father.

“I actually grew up with the goal to be a Texas Tech cheerleader,” she says. “I began barrel racing when I was about 15. Then, rodeo started going well, and I decided to attend Vernon (Junior College) on a rodeo scholarship.”

In keeping with her zeal for accomplishment, Shada graduated from high school a year early.

“When I was still a junior in high school, I was studying my schedule for my senior year and realized I only needed a few credits to graduate,” she says. “So, I enrolled in Texas Tech’s correspondence program and graduated in 1996, when I was 17. I was enrolled in college the next fall.”

Shada went from Vernon to Texas Tech because she had always wanted to attend Tech. She was a member of the Texas Tech University Women’s Rodeo Team and majored in marketing.

“I wanted to get a marketing degree because I had always seen myself working in the rodeo industry,” she says. “And the business classes I took apply directly to what I do today.”

Marketing was a good fit for her fashion career as well.

Shada began modeling for the Cruel Girl label when she was 16. At 18 she began modeling for Wrangler. Her time at Texas Tech was a whirlwind of classes, traveling with the Tech Rodeo Team and modeling. She managed to squeeze in time for Trevor, whom she’d dated since she was 16?

“I first met Trevor when I was just a kid,” Shada says.

“People used to joke that we had a crush on each other. I think I was 10 or 12 the first time we met. He was attending one of my stepfather’s roping clinics in Durant, Okla. Our first date was actually to a George Strait concert in Amarillo.

I think I asked him.”

Trevor and Shada dated throughout her college career, and although their lives carried on at a frenetic pace, they were able to see each other at rodeos where they were competing. When it came time to take their relationship to the next level, it happened in typical fashion for Shada, with several major things intersecting.

“I turned 21, graduated and got engaged all the same week,” exclaims Shada.

Their lives haven’t slowed since they married in 2001, either. Shada says she’s “living the dream” because she’s able to enjoy being a mom full-time, traveling and competing as a family and pursuing another life-long love: fashion.

Shada’s style mimics her personality. It’s always edgy, and, when she’s in the spotlight, whether it’s at the National Finals Rodeo or while presenting at the Great American Country Awards, she really shines.

“I love working with Shada because she has such a sense of style that she embraces and she isn't afraid to show the world,” says Red Raider Amy Moorhouse '95, who, along

with Lorinda Van Newkirk, owns fashion house Gypsy Soule, the focus of the cover story for the 2012 November/ December Texas Techsan. Moorhouse and Shada collaborate on much of what Shada wears for public events, particularly during the NFR, where Western chic rules. “She’s never afraid to try something crazy and new. She actually brings a freshness to the sport (of rodeo). She is the embodiment of style coupled with ability.”

Rodeo’s a fascinating sport. Often it’s as demanding and punishing as it is rewarding. It’s the only sport, along with horse racing, that requires participants to depend on someone other than themselves for success. On the one hand you have the rider—whether it’s a roping event, barrel racing or bronc and bull riding—and on the other hand, the animal.

Shada notes she’s fortunate because she has Trevor to lean on, and vice versa. She knows she’s blessed, and she’ll be the first to tell you that. However, anyone who really knows Shada can tell you, she earned her stripes.

“Being in a famous rodeo family brings a lot of pressures,” says Shada’s friend Moorhouse. “I respect that she’s paid her dues and worked hard to get to this level of success. She’s done it all while being a good mom, wife and continuing on in her faith.”

Shada will readily express how important faith is to her and Trevor, and how, without it, they’d struggle. One of the reasons the couple chose to raise their family in Decatur is its proximity to their church, Victory Family.

With all the gifts Shada has in her life, she doesn’t take credit for any of them—her belief is that grace is the big red ribbon that ties them all together.

Shada and her husband are both sponsored by Wrangler, and all four Braziles have modeled for the clothing company. While pregnant with her son, Treston, Shada realized there weren’t options for moms wishing to dress their babies according to cowboy, and cowgirl, trends. Shada says, “I approached Wrangler three times about developing a line for babies. They finally said yes.”

Although the images of “sky” and “cloud” may go together well, cloud computing is hardly an idea waiting to happen. It’s currently one of the hottest trends in business computing.

Cloud computing involves storing data on the Internet instead of backing it up to a computer or server. The information is stored in the “cloud.” The system is more efficient and dependable than simply saving data on a machine.

Carla Meyer Wickoff is a consultant with a large international consulting firm. She is in charge of cloud ERP (enterprise resource planning), which includes management software that helps companies run their businesses. The system helps integrate everything from payroll to payables and reports.

“I focus on NetSuite software,” Wickoff says. “It’s probably the most robust cloud-based ERP system that’s available to anyone at this point. It has a lot of customers and a great deal of functionality, and the market is exploding at this point. My company partners with many ERP systems, and the cloud is the latest thing that they are embracing.”

An actual cloud in the sky may be easy to describe, but cloud computing is more complicated. It definitely is more Ethernet than ethereal.

Perhaps Wickoff’s biggest challenge is convincing clients that cloud computing is a safe way to preserve information. Because many people are used to the more tangible way of saving data onto a desktop computer or a server, they must take a leap of faith and learn to rely on the Internet.

There are definite advantages to storing data in a location separate from a company. For example, if a natural disaster occurs where the company is located, its data will be safe in another “location”—namely, in the cloud.

“I remember a time when people didn’t want to buy something on the Internet because they were afraid to put their payment information out there,” she says. “Now it’s just standard operating procedure. It happens all the time. That’s kind of the adoption at which cloud is escalating.”

“You can imagine that any business that delivers their services to their clients on the Internet is looking for an Internet option or a cloud-based option for their data and their ERP system,” Wickoff says. “Those are the kind of companies that have embraced it to begin with.”

“It is starting to branch out into other industries, everything from retail to wholesale distribution to not-for-profit, and it’s even starting to cross over into the most difficult area for a newer systems, and that’s manufacturing. So it’s really getting a broad base.”

One project that Wickoff’s team undertook was setting up an ERP for the Circuit of the Americans, the first Formula 1 racetrack in the country, located in Austin. The large project had no systems in place until Wickoff’s team became involved.

“They needed ERP to do some of their construction planning and pay vendors and eventually, billing customers to gain ticket sales revenue,” she says. “They chose NetSuite, and we did the implementation in my group. It was done very fast.”

Houstonian Wickoff was destined to be a Red Raider. She says that she was dressed in Texas Tech paraphernalia since she was a baby. Her father, Walter Meyer, who graduated in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in business, encouraged her and her brother, Mark Meyer, who graduated in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in communications, to attend his alma mater.

“In addition to having family who attended Texas Tech, I met my husband there,” she says. “We have a long-standing Tech history and follow college football. We love it.

“I lived in the dorm my entire time at Texas Tech. I started in Weeks for one year. Then I was in Horn and Knapp, where I met my best friend for life, Tammy Justice, who was my maid-of-honor. I lived in Chitwood for one summer, but Horn/Knapp is where I was most of the time.”

Fresh out of Texas Tech in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and a minor in French, Wickoff wanted to sell computers with IBM. Her career soon evolved into helping companies to manage and preserve their data.

For 20 years, she worked helping companies manage their own traditional computer systems. Then, several years also, she moved to the cloud ERP area.

Wickoff and her husband, Kelly, a 1983 graduate of Texas Tech with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering who is retired, moved to California about 12 years ago. They are located 220

miles north of San Francisco on 178 acres in a beautiful place called Oak Run. “We built our dream house out in the middle of nowhere,” Wickoff says. “All I need is an Internet connection and an airport and I’m good. There’s a little airport about 30 minutes from my house. The biggest problem with getting from my house to the airport is hitting a deer—not traffic.”

The Wickoffs certainly make the best of their scenic surroundings. They love to kayak, hike and snowshoe. They also spend a lot of time with their dog, Dieter.

“We work to live, not live to work,” Carla says.

There’s complete silence along the river. The sun has just begun to creep above the horizon. A Guadalupe Bass snaps at a floating fly, breaking the glassy surface, creating translucent rings on the water that widen, then slowly disappear downstream.

The cool morning air has caused a fog to settle on the river. Soon the sun will burn away the mist, revealing hummingbirds lighting on bright blossoms.

Axis deer will cease munching browse and head for a shady place to rest under the pecan trees’ thick canopies. Birds begin their wake-up calls from high above in their leafy fortress.

It’s morning on the Llano.

You say tomato: For many Texans, seeing the Spanish word “Llano” evokes thoughts of the Llano Estacado—properly pronounced, per Spanish rules, YAH-no. Texas Tech sits squarely in the middle of this geographic plain. For those familiar with Central Texas, Llano means a town or the Llano River, and is pronounced improperly: LAN-o.

But no matter how you pronounce it, Texas Tech’s “Llano” is linked to Central Texas’ Llano River.

PART 1 A HILL COUNTRY CAMPUS Texas Tech owns about 400 acres of undisturbed land bisected by the headwaters of the South Llano River. The acreage, located in the town of Junction, Texas, has long been referred to colloquially as “The Junction Campus,” and officially as the “Texas Tech University Center at Junction.” About a decade ago, it received the designation of “Llano River Field Station,” due to the large number of collaborative research projects performed on the campus—the U.S. Forest Service, Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, Texas A&M University, to name a few. The Llano River Field Station is the largest inland field station in the state.

The station is the site of multidisciplinary research focused on water, natural resources and education. Its stated goal is to “serve as a destination for scientific research, nature and ecotourism, ecosystem and water resource management, and education and training programs for Kindergarten through 12th grade students, undergraduate and graduate students, landowners and the public.”

The land was donated by Kimble County to the State of Texas in the mid-20th century to create an institute of higher education. In 1951, Texas A&M University opened an adjunct campus, but eventually abandoned the pursuit. In 1971, the state gave the campus to Texas Tech.

Since adding the Central Texas location to the Texas Tech University System, there has always been a heavy slant toward science, particularly biology, and art courses. The Junction campus is one of the TTUS’s satellite campuses. The other two are in Fredericksburg and Marble Falls; however, those are vastly different than Junction because they are simply buildings where classes are held. In addition to the high number of research projects, the small staff in Junction has expanded existing programs and added so many new ones, it’s impossible to briefly explain everything that goes on there. There are intensive courses taught to Tech students in the summer and in May, dubbed “Maymester” classes.

Then there are camps, conferences, workshops and trainings held year-round. The campus is a living advertisement for Texas Tech.

Most alumni have never seen the campus, or are unaware of its existence. But for those who have attended classes or events at the Junction Campus, the experience is unforgettable.

ONE-ROOM SCHOOL

For the past decade, thousands of kids in Texas have considered the Junction Campus the most fascinating classroom in the world. Since outreach is one of the cornerstones of the Junction campus, creation of the Outdoor School was a natural fit for Junction—the school was established with a 2003 grant from the Department of Education. It’s a two-to-four day math-and-science-centered program offered to elementary and high school students. The Outdoor School utilizes a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) curriculum, encompassing 20 areas of study. The schools that choose to participate are scattered across the state. Students travel to the campus with their teachers, and stay in one of the on-site cabins.

Tom Arsuffi, Ph.D., director of the Llano River Field Station, and a Texas Tech adjunct professor of biology, natural resource management and enviromental toxicology, says in the last 10 years, the Outdoor School has provided professional development and science/nature curriculum to more than 60 independent school districts, 15,000 students and hundreds of teachers.

The Outdoor School offers a break from abstract classroom learning which tends to bore even the most enthusiastic student.

“For many, this is their first big outdoor adventure and you can see it in their eyes the moment they step off of the bus,” says Arsuffi. “Wonder, excitement adventure—something new and different. There are numerous examples that this is a first-time experience. The examples are sad and humorous at the same time. For example, some kids mistake deer for cows, others mistake the river for a lake. For schools selecting the astronomy unit, many of the kids wonder, ‘What is that hazy band trailing across the night sky?’ It’s the first time they’ve seen the Milky Way. “When asking students why they loved the Outdoor School so much, the one answer always given is ‘fun.’ They told us they got to move, talk to and with each other, get their hands into what was supposed to be work. ‘Fun’ was learning. We’ve taken the fun out of school, but I’m determined to put it back by letting children be children.”

One teacher who brought her 5th grade class to the Outdoor School summed up the experience: “Yes, the children saw, experienced, touched and learned more than a week in a classroom could provide. More importantly, we saw learning and teaching going on the way we know it should. …They (students) explored, caught, measured, encouraged, questioned, hypothesized, corrected, ran, whispered, walked, dreamed and laughed all day long.”

The Junction Campus is an undisturbed, pristine place to study things like the stars and moon, wildlife, water biology and zoology and apply science learned in the classroom to real life.

The Outdoor School has a definite impact on attendees: 94 percent showed gains in 5th grade science scores on TAKS/STAAR (state achievement tests).

Students categorized as disadvantaged students, or Title I, showed even greater gains, with one school seeing TAKS scores leap from a 55 percent passage rate to 89 percent.

subjects for elementary students AQUATIC BIOLOGY: What better place to study and receive hands-on experience than the South Llano River—students sample macroinvertebrates and collect data on water, air temperature and pH.

Employees planted milkweed and a variety of flowering native trees and shrubs to attract both hummingbirds and butterflies.

They’ve also planted seedballs with native wildflowers to serve as attractants.

ASTRONOMY: Students study phases of the moon and relative positions of the earth, sun and moon and also study the night sky and learn to recognize constellations through telescopes.

NIGHT PREDATION: An owl pellet from a Great Horned Owl is dissected in this unit that focuses on animal adaptations and the owl’s role in a food web that make it a skilled and silent hunter.

BIODIVERSITY: Participants examine the interconnectedness of life and develop an appreciation for the effects of human actions on other life forms.

ORIENTEERING: A scavenger hunt designed to apply compass and map skills, as well as enhance problem solving and teambuilding skills, sends students on an outdoor adventure.

CIRCUITS: Concepts about electricity and energy are applied

PEDOLOGY: Students compare texture and permeability of soil

by building electrical devices using renewable and nonrenewable resources.

lowed by an outdoor hike to seek butterflies. The Junction Campus is endeavoring to become recognized as a Monarch Waystation for the Monarch butterfly migration across Texas and into Mexico. Monarchs already fly through Junction, but in order to be recognized as a waystation, food sources must be readily available for the adult butterflies and larvae.

The Llano River Field Station on the Junction Campus is a welcoming place for a number of reasons. First, employees at the Junction campus are friendly, knowledgeable and generous with their time—Director of Operations Robert Stubblefield, Ph.D., Director Tom Arsuffi, Ph.D., and Karen Lopez are the initial contacts. Second, the river—it’s gorgeous and knowing that it’s part of the Texas Tech system makes it that much more exceptional. And third, the land—pecan, mesquite and juniper trees cover the campus and there is wildlife at every turn, both in the water and on land. It’s an outdoorsman’s, or woman’s, paradise.

sun and wind. Use of photovoltaic cells and electronic equipment is an integral part of this unit. The second alternative energy unit, Wind Energy, dovetails with the Photovoltaic Cells unit. Students are engineers in discussions about the pros and cons of various energy sources before using the scientific method to build and test their own wind turbine model designs.

PHOTOVOLTAIC CELLS AND WIND ENERGY: The State Energy

Conservation Office awarded a $230K grant to the Llano River Field Station. The money was used to purchase a 20 kW wind turbine and 40kW of solar panels. This not only saves thousands of dollars in electricity costs annually, but it also provides students a holistic and integrated renewable energy curriculum.

QUAIL NECROPSY: By examining internal structures of a Bobwhite Quail, students can then compare and contrast animal anatomy with human anatomy.

STREAM FLOW: Students become hydrologists by using integrated science and mathematics to determine the velocity of the South Llano River.

The kids who attend Junction Campus’s Outdoor School won’t ever forget their first introduction to Texas Tech University.

“The Outdoor School is one of the earliest engagement and outreach ambassadors for Texas Tech,” says Arsuffi.

“The kids have a blast. Teachers gain professional development in the STEM areas and learn a new pedagogy, and the principals and superintendents are thrilled because the OS experience translates to significant improvement on Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) state-mandated testing as well as improved classroom behavior and attitude.

Ensuring the Outdoor School is a success also requires teamwork amongst the hosts at the Junction Campus. More than a dozen people assist with every session of the OS. Many schools opt for the Outdoor Academy, a 3-day, 2-night experience. That involves a larger crew, including dining and cleaning staff, facilities and maintenance workers, business managers and the certified Outdoor School teachers.

The combination of hard work by staff and the exceptional campus where ‘a river runs through it,’ creates an unbeatable experience.

“A ‘sense of place’ in nature is fundamental to learning, understanding and an informed citizenry,” Arsuffi notes.

“Our ‘place’ has it all if you want to teach kids and young and older adults about STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) associated with nature, natural resources, water and agriculture.”

Junction Campus has all the things you won’t find in a traditional classroom, which, according to Arsuffi, makes it the remedy for Nature Deficit Disorder.

No better place to learn: Students of the Outdoor School at the Texas Tech University Junction Campus are immersed in learning about the South Llano River and all of its fascinating inhabitants, such as the state fish of Texas—the Guadalupe Bass—gar, catfish and aquatic bugs, like the hellgrammite and burrowing mayflies. The Return of Kennedy Kithuka

temperatures coupled with icy winds whipped and slashed across the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind. Standing tall within its path, Kennedy Kithuka peered out at the long course before him.

10,000 meters—more than six miles. In this?

Could he do it again?

A relentless late November front just pummeled the Midwest and held Terre Haute in its grasp hours before the start of the 2013 NCAA Cross Country Championship. The terrain was wet, sloppy and tough to navigate, let alone race. Kithuka knew precious energy would be wasted by way of the imminent slipping and sliding that was to come.

The weather that day brought elements to the course Kithuka, in his senior cross country season at Tech, had yet to face throughout his unparalleled and record-breaking career.

The soft-spoken and humble Kenya native entered the race unbeaten—14 victories in 14 cross country races as a Red Raider, and looking to repeat as NCAA Champion. Only four runners in the last 37 seasons of NCAA Division I cross country had pulled off the feat.

Nevertheless, the race began and Kithuka took his usual lead.

He controlled the pace for the opening 6,000 meters of the race, but a late push by freshman Oregon runner Edward Cheserek proved too much for the reigning national champion.

For the first time as a Red Raider Kithuka was passed, and eventually crossed the finish line second behind Cheserek.

That cold, wet and windy day was Kithuka’s most recent race in a Texas Tech uniform as he exhausted his indoor track eligibility following a 2013 NCAA Indoor 5,000-meter title.

Now, with months to prepare for his final campaign as a Red Raider, he returns to the track this weekend as Texas Tech opens the 2014 outdoor season in San Antonio.

“I have something,” Kithuka said. “I should not look back at what happened in cross country. I have to go on and get ready for the outdoor season.

I know I will come back.”

I T WA S AUGUS T 2012 when Kithuka made his debut in a Red Raider uniform at the Texas Tech Ruidoso Open—just more than 250 miles west of the Texas Tech campus. In his first NCAA Division I cross country race, the two-time NAIA Cross Country Champion not only blew away the field, but set a course record cruising across the finish line with a time of 19 minutes 40.8 seconds in the 4-mile race. Two weeks later, Kithuka returned to Lubbock for the Texas Tech Open in what would be his first 8,000-meter race of the season. Yet again, he jumped out ahead of the field before crossing the finish line well over a minute ahead of the second place finisher.

Kithuka wins the 2014 Big 12 Championship

The two early season performances jumpstarted the junior to the most prolific cross country season by a Red Raider in school history. He went unbeaten, set three course records and went on to become Tech’s first men’s NCAA Cross Country Champion.

At the national meet, Kithuka took on—and defeated–previously unbeaten Arizona Wildcat Lawi Lalang.

The perfect season was complete.

“We knew he was good,” Texas Tech Head Cross Country Coach Jon Murray said. “We just didn’t know how good he was going to be. To do what he did that first cross country season was just a picture perfect story.”

As the newly minted NCAA Champion, Kithuka was on the national scene as a rising star at Texas Tech. of 2012 closed with Kithuka atop the collegiate cross country world. He graced the cover of Track and Field News. He was unbeaten and the new force in Division I. “I knew if I trained well and believed in the coaching staff,” Kithuka said.

“That would make me believe I could do anything better.”

The national publication captured his emphatic finish, complete with his trademark grin, hands in the air and Guns Up. In just four months, Kithuka had cemented his status as a cross-country great at Texas Tech–and still had his senior season of eligibility.

The scene, and all the euphoria surrounding it, closed the fall season with about a month-and-a-half separating his national championship performance and the start of the 2013 indoor track and field season.

“I gained a lot of confidence,” Kithuka said. “I knew I had to go for the indoor track [season]. I grew all of my confidence from that time. My body was feeling well every time I went on the track.”

It was three weeks into the indoor season when Kithuka and the Red Raiders made their first trip as the squad traveled south to College Station for the Texas A&M Mondo Challenge. At the meet, Tech would go head-to-head with teams from Texas A&M, Arizona State, USC and Tennessee—and Kithuka would make his debut on the track in his first distance race as a Red Raider.

He didn’t disappoint. Kithuka made history that day, winning the mile in a school record 3:59.53 – marking the first-ever sub-4 minute performance at Texas Tech. He also anchored the Red Raider distance medley relay team to a school record time of 9:41.55, easily beating teams from both Texas A&M, on its home track, and Tennessee.

Kithuka would go on to turn in yet another stellar performance at the prestigious Tyson Invitational in Arkansas where he brought the crowd to a standing ovation with the nation’s leading time in the 5,000-meter run. In a downright dominant performance, Kithuka crossed the finish line in 13:25.38.

“He handled it well,” Murray said. “He doublelapped most of the field. He got on pace, handled the race preparation well in what we were wanting to do, and just did it. The crowd, they are great fans at Arkansas and were just appreciative of his effort.

It was just a great performance and they showed that appreciation. It was nice.”

The dominant regular season set the stage for what would be another opportunity to etch his

sports But he wants more.

Sitting in the lobby of the Wyndham Garden Hotel in San Antonio days before his first outdoor race of the season, it takes little time to list the meets, races and times he wants to achieve in the upcoming months. And they all lead up to one meet.

The Big 12 Outdoor Championships.

Tech hosts the conference meet for the second time in five years May 16-18 at the Terry and Linda Fuller Track and Field Complex in Lubbock.

“My goal is to have the team title,” he said. “Because if you have the team title you create good memories. If I see that ring, with Texas Tech, that will be something we achieved as a team.

[It would be a great] memory with my teammates and coaches, to see how hard we worked.”

Whatever memories Kithuka and the Texas Tech track and field program goes on to make with him on the squad this season are, one thing is certainly clear: He has already made an indelible mark on the program–in the record books, on the track and on the NCAA track and field and cross-country scene as a whole.

“I’m very happy to be at Texas Tech.” Kithuka said. “It’s been a very good home for me. Lubbock has been a very nice place to me, because it has helped my name to be great there.

So if I finish school and go outside, I will still [be happy] to be from Texas Tech and represent Texas Tech.”

legacy in the Texas Tech and NCAA record books. On the very stage where he clocked that historic performance in Arkansas, Kithuka would race for a national championship.

On the first day of competition at the Randal-Tyson Track Complex in Arkansas, Kithuka outran the field and brought home Texas Tech’s first national title in the men’s 5,000-meter run. With the performance he scored 10 points for the Red Raiders who went on to capture Tech’s first-ever top-5 finish at the national meet finishing 5th overall with 28 points.

“He was just as excited for our team performance as he was his individual performance,” Murray said. “That speaks to his attitude and what he goes by in life. He wants other people to be successful just like himself. He is just such an inspiration for more than himself. He inspires other people. They get there and they do better than they did before because he is around them.”

IT ’S BEEN O N E calendar year since Kithuka has stepped on the track in a Texas Tech uniform. Now the soft-spoken, but ultracompetitive senior enters his final season as a Red Raider.

In just two cross country seasons and the 2013 indoor season on the track, Kithuka already has two national titles, four Big 12 titles, three indoor school records and the first-ever sub-4 minute mile in school history.

It was Sunday evening (May 18), and with the victory–Kithuka’s second facility record in as many tries at the conference championship meet—the Red Raiders took a commanding 31.5 point lead over Texas heading into the meet’s final event.

They were officially Big 12 Champions.

“Winning was everything to me,” he said after the race. “So I just wanted to go out there, do my best, and try to win some points for my team.”

With downright dominant victories in both the 5,000 and 10,000-meter races, Kithuka scored 20 points by himself, and was eventually named the Performer of the Year for his efforts.

The Red Raiders, meanwhile, became the first track and field team to win a Big 12 Championship on its home track since 2008. Head coach Wes Kittley was honored as the conference Coach of the Year for his team’s performance.

“It was the best three days as a coach I’ve had here,” Kittley said.

Texas Tech went on to qualify 50 entries for the NCAA West Preliminary meet, and entered the post-season after perhaps one of the most memorable track and field season in memory on the South Plains.

“It’s just the grandest thing that I could have thought of,” Kittley said. “We set our goal to win the Big 12 at the beginning of the year. We talked about it all year, and the kids were just incredible. It was the best three days that I’ve ever had as head coach.”

Brandon Schweers (BA History 2011) and Kristin Sims (BBA/MSA 2013) gave a Guns Up to the Stanley Cup at the Mike Modano Retirement Game on March 8, 2014.

Jenna Sampson (MA 2005) gave a Guns Up during a 2013 trip to Israel.

She is in Capernum, Israel, at the town synagogue from Jesus’s day.

On a recent trip from Glasgow, Scotland, to London, David Mirmelli (left) former Texas Tech Alumni Association London Chapter president, was introduced to the First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond, who is in the middle of campaigning for a historic referendum on Scottish Independence from the U.K.—the vote is Sept. 18, 2014, and if passed, could break apart the 400-plus-year-old union with England and create a new independent Scotland.

Salmond presented Mirmelli with a Scottish (saltire) Flag lapel pin.

What is your position on the Alumni Association Board? I serve on Chapter Development, Excellence Grants, Membership, Scholarship and Legislative Committees.

What is your position on the Alumni Association Board? I serve on Special Events and Recognition Programs Commitees.

What was your major and class year at Tech, plus any other degrees you may have earned? Geology Petroleum Option, 1961. Columbia University Executive Program Business Administration, 1981.

Where are you employed and what is your position? From 1962 to 1994, Humble Oil Co./Exxon, retiring from Exxon Exploration Co. as vice president, Far East Business Unit. Since 1994, I have been active in two petroleum drilling opportunity partnerships.

What are the names of your family members? My wife is Brenda, daughter Caroline and son-in-law David are in Taos, N.M. Our daughter Paige and son-in-law Whit (Texas Tech, J.D. Law 1997) reside in Midland with our super grandchildren Clara, 8, and William Bryant, 6.

Major activities in which you were involved as a student at Tech: Geology Association and Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

What is one of your fondest memories from your Tech days? The opportunity to establish quality lifelong friendships!

What are your interests and hobbies? Hiking, skiing, genealogy, scrapbooking and quilting.

In the 1934 “La Ventana” yearbook, Texas Technological College President Bradford Knapp, Ph.D., left, presents a specially manufactured suit to Vice President of the United States John Nance Garner, a native of Detroit, Texas. The exact caption in the yearbook is as follows: “Dr. Bradford Knapp helps Vice-President Garner put on the coat to his new hand woven, Tech-made suit presented to him by the Textile department of Texas Tech. The story of this gift was sent over the Associated Press wires and appeared in nearly every paper in the nation.”

BOOKS 1959 CAROL SNETHEN REED (BBA Marketing)

Rociada, N.M. , has written a book with her sisters, MARILYN SNETHEN CLARK (BSE ’56 Education), and BARBARA SNETHEN LEONARD (BSE ’57 Secondary Education) called “Outside the Fence.” During World War II, a family of six, and their dog Flash, spent years living near Prisoner of War Camps in the United States. The family’s father was in the U.S. Army and had been assigned to the camps, which many Americans today do not realize even existed, and sometimes confuse them with the Japanese internment camps that held American Japanese during WWII. In the P.O.W. camps, the prisoners who were considered trustworthy spent their incarceration working on farms and ranches. The book follows the true story of the children from the Snethen family, and their experiences as an Army family stationed stateside during the war.

1973 DAVID L. CAFFEY (M.Ed. Education, ’78 Ed.D. Curriculum and Instruction) Clovis, N.M., has published a book, “Chasing the Santa Fe Ring: Power and Privilege in Territorial New Mexico.” David’s book is about the Santa Fe Ring—a group of people believed to be corrupt, who sought power and wealth after the Civil War, when New Mexico was still just a territory, not a state. The Santa Fe Ring has been alluded to in New Mexico history books, but never fully revealed.

Caffey explores the group’s history, its members and their actions.

1976 KARL MENTZEL (BA Management)

Bountiful, Utah, published a book, “Crossing the Cultural Border,” in 2009.

Karl was hired to run a failing semiconductor chip manufacturing plant in Mexicali, Mexico, a city with a population of one million people. He was the only American at the plant. He was unfamiliar with Mexico’s customs and he didn’t speak the language.

In “Crossing the Cultural Border,” Karl details his team’s journey from an underperforming plant to one that was honored as Mexico’s top manufacturing plant.

1965 DOUG GIBBINS (BSE Physical Education) Mesquite,

Texas, had the “Doug Gibbins Sports Medicine Award” named after him in honor of his retirement in May 2012. He is now working as the marketing/outreach athletic trainer for Texas Orthopedic Associates, a group of sports-oriented physicians in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

1966 WILLIAM C. SHRADER (BBA Finance) Houston, Texas,

has retired from law practice and joined the Board of Directors of the John P. McGovern Foundation. His wife is Peggy.

1980 JACK JAMISON (BA Political Science) Dallas, Texas, the product liability practice group chair for the law firm Godwin Lewis PC, was named to D Magazine’s 2014 list of The Best Lawyers in Dallas. His wife is Jule WILLIAMS JAMISON (BA ’81 Advertising).

1985 DARRELL FLOYD (BS Physical Education) Enid, Okla., was named the next superintendent of Enid Public Schools. He spent the last 14 years as superintendent of Stephenville Independent School District in Stephenville, Texas.

TIM JACKSON (BBA Finance) McKinney, Texas, was in-

stalled Nov. 21 as vice president/secretary of the Texas Association of Builders. Tim has been a member of the Dallas Builders Association since 1997. He builds primarily in the Fairview, Lucas, Prosper and McKinney areas. He has won numerous awards, including the ARC Custom Builder of the Year and the APEX Award, which recognizes builder’s professionalism in doing business with associate members. Currently, he is building a Mortgage Free Home for a wounded veteran through Operation Finally Home.

ROY THOMAS GRIMES passed away April 27, 2014, in Lubbock. He was born September 5, 1926, in Wichita Falls, Texas. He and his parents moved to Lubbock in 1938, and he graduated from Lubbock High School in 1944. After graduation, Roy joined the U.S. Navy shortly before his 18th birthday and served two tours on active duty during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He continued in the Navy Reserves for the next 42 years and retired as a U.S. Navy Reserve Captain. Roy graduated from Texas Tech University in 1953 with bachelor’s degrees in business and education and a master’s degree in education. He began working the following year as a classroom teacher/coach at J.T. Hutchinson Junior High in Lubbock, two years later assistant principal, and in 1961, as principal for 27 years, retiring in 1987. The following year he was elected to the LISD Board of Trustees, where he served for 18 years.

Besides education and military service, he served in leadership roles in multiple church and community organizations.

As a result, he was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus and Friend of Education by the College of Education and was the recipient of the School Board Trustee of the Year awards by the Lubbock Classroom Teacher Association and the Texas Classroom Teacher Association. Reese AFB named him a Friend of Reese. Texas Tech Alumni Association honored him with the Distinguished Alumnus Service Award. Grimes belonged to the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, Texas Aviation Heritage Foundation, Silent Wings Museum, and was a Charter Member of the Science Spectrum. Currently, he was serving on committees for the Catholic Diocese of Lubbock, City of Lubbock, and LISD. Survivors include his wife, JERRY FREEMAN GRIMES (BBA ’52 Business Education).

For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics Competition Team 1817 recently won the Hub City Regional.

The competition challenged 42 teams to design, fabricate and program a robot to perform all the tasks of this year’s game, “Aerial Assist.” Team 1817 was honored with the Industrial Design Award sponsored by General Motors and the Industrial Safety Award sponsored by Underwriters laboratories.

The team includes students from ten local high schools and middle schools and is mentored by the Llano Estacado RoboRaiders. The RoboRaider mentors are Texas Tech graduate and undergraduate students who help develop leadership and teaming skills throughout the year.

FIRST is an international robotics program that strives to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) awareness among young students and the community. Its mission is to show students that technology, science and problem-solving is not only fun and rewarding, but paths to successful careers and bright futures.

Team leader GEORGE TAN , a Texas Tech student majoring in electrical engineering and mathematics, was recognized as an outstanding mentor with the Woody Flowers Finalist Award.

University student architecture team won first place at the second annual Healthcare Symposium Exhibition & Social’s (SES) Student Healthcare DESIGN. The 2014 theme was Healthcare at the Edges: Urban Growth and the Decentralization of Care.

The challenge was to design a health and wellness center in an existing building and its surrounding parking lot within the team’s respective communities. Teams from Texas A&M University and the University of Texas at San Antonio competed against Texas Tech’s team to propose a solution to an adaptive re-use project.

Texas Tech’s team, representing College of Architecture’s HealthCare Facilities, worked on the design since January, creating an environment that is therapeutic, welcoming, operationally efficient and accommodating to technology.

The winning team included students KATHERINE ANGLIN, KYLE MCALONAN, ERIKA MEYERKORD and COLLIN ZALESAK .

has announced the appointment of COBY RAY as the new Texas Tech University System student regent for 2014-2015.

Ray, a dual-degree student in the joint MD/ MBA program between Texas Tech University and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, is the ninth student to serve on the Board of Regents. His one-year term begins June 1.

A native of Plano, Texas, Ray received his bachelor’s degree in sports management from the University of North Texas in 2008. He earned his MBA from Texas Tech University in 2013. He is currently studying to become a pediatric neurosurgeon as a fourth year medical student.

Last year’s winner in the women’s jeans category, ELAINE MORTON , a junior, took first place again in the same category. ELLEN CHANCELLOR , a senior, placed second followed by TABITHA GARZA , a senior.

KATY BURRIS and BRENDA ALONSO , both juniors, tied for first place in the men’s jeans category. VANCE OWEKHA , a junior, took second and DANIEL ELY , a junior, third.

In the cotton and research/trend board category, ALICIA MCDONALD , a senior, won first place. Second place in the category was NICOLE RAMSEY , a senior, followed by KAITLYN MCDONALD , also a senior.

The contest is held in collaboration with the Department of Design’s Apparel Design and Manufacturing program, housed in the College of Human Sciences. Winners were announced during Saturday’s annual TECHstyle senior fashion show.
