Personnel Changes on Campus

S ome of you may have noticed that Guy Bailey, Ph.D., who left the presidency here in the spring, recently announced his resignation from his position as president of the University of Alabama Oct. 31.

His resignation comes as a major surprise, but obviously is the result of his wife Jan’s health issues.

“This is a decision my wife, Jan, and I made together after much discussion about how we can best address her health, which is the most important priority in our lives,” he said.

Jan’s health was a major concern while he was Tech’s president, and apparently, the situation has not improved. Interestingly enough, Jan Tillery was a student of mine in journalism here, and her father, Tim, was my high school baseball coach at Lubbock High School. She was an extremely strong and enthusiastic supporter of Tech athletic teams.

I’m sure all Tech alumni join me in wishing them the best.

of the presidency, Chancellor Kent Hance has formed a Presidential Search Committee and Advisory Council. The Search Committee has the responsibility of soliciting and screening candidates.

The Advisory Council is composed of a larger representation of several constituencies including faculty, administration, staff, students and community members. This council will help with the initial screenings and provide updates on the progress of the search to their respective constituency groups.

Ultimately the search committee is charged with submitting to the chancellor “at least three and a maximum of four acceptable candidates.” The chancellor, with the approval of the board of regents, will determine which finalist for the position will be publicly named.

Texas state law protects the identity of any applicant for the position until such time as the applicant is named a finalist. The same law required that public notice of the name of any finalist be given at least 21 days before the date on which final action is taken.

In earlier searches, many times the candidates were brought to campus to meet with faculty, staff, students, administration and alumni. That was the manner used when David Schmidly, Ph.D., and Jon Whitmore, Ph.D., were selected. But that process has changed. Most of the time the finalists do not want the universities where they are employed to know of their candidacy.

What are these groups looking for? The “official” announcement says that we are looking for someone with the following characteristics: • Terminal professional degree or earned doctorate • “Right” blend of experiences: as a senior professional . . . in management and administration of a complex organization . . . in research . . . and in communicating clearly and effectively with people inside and outside the organization.

• Demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and integrity in an academic, research and/or service environment.

• Ability to ensure efficient operations throughout the organization while fostering growth in enrollment and preserving high academic standards.

• Knowledge of and/or experience with the business operations of large and comprehensive organizations.

The only thing left out of these characteristics would be the ability to leap tall buildings at a single bound. (Remember Superman?)

Seriously, the expectations will be high, and they should be.

Thanks to Chancellor Hance, former President Bailey and their staffs, Texas Tech has moved up several notches and is now certified as a National Research University by the coordinating board. This step is an important one toward ultimately obtaining Tier One status.

The point is that this job should be very attractive to a number of highly qualified individuals. There is no specific timetable. My guess is that the final decision will be made sometime in the spring.

T he appointment of Lawrence Schovanec, Ph.D., as interim president has been warmly received on campus.

He has served Texas Tech in a number of capacities. He served as chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics for 10 years until he was appointed as interim dean of the College of Arts & Sciences in 2008, before being named dean of the college in 2010.

As dean, he has hired more than 70 faculty, five of those strategic hires, and has experienced significant increases in research funding and student enrollment. He has overseen programs and initiatives to support faculty development, improve advising and increase funds for scholarships. A major initiative of the college has focused on development of alumni relations that has resulted in more than $55 million in gifts since 2008.

Schovanec has spoken extensively at conferences and other professional venues and is the author of more than 50 scholarly publications.

He has received the President’s Excellence in Teaching Award and is a member of the Texas Tech Teaching Academy. In 2011, he was a recipient of the Texas Tech University Inclusive Excellence Award presented by the Division of Institutional Diversity, Equity and Community Engagement.

Rather than just keep the status quo as an interim president, he has pushed forward with academic recruiting and the initiatives designed to move the university further toward ultimately gaining AAU (Association of American Universities) designation, which represents Tier One universities across the country.

T he departure of Billy Gillispie would have made a good continuing soap opera. I think most alumni felt that he would begin to build a solid program, just as he did at UTEP and A&M. Other personal issues got in the way.

Athletics Communications

Walker

Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt found himself in a very difficult position, and I think he handled the situation as well as possible, considering everything that happened.

I think his appointment of Associate Head Coach Chris Walker was a good one. Coach Walker has the reputation of being an outstanding recruiter. He has 17 years of collegiate coaching experience at Loyola Marymount, Vanderbilt, Pepperdine, Massachusetts, New Mexico and Villanova.

In his playing days at Villanova, he was a point guard who helped the Wildcats to two NCAA Tournament appearances and two NIT appearances. He started 96 games and finished his

career with 404 points (seventh all time at Villanova) and 185 steals (fourth).

He brings a fresh brand of enthusiasm to our program that all his players seem to be excited about. The Raiders will push the ball at both ends of the court. There will be times when they may play with four guards. It should be exciting to watch.

True, Walker has never been a head coach, but this season will give him a chance to show what he can do with the reins. While this is being written before the regular season begins, I think fans will be pleased with the job he will do.

We have tried the “big name” coaches. This may be just what we need.

Texas Tech officials broke ground on the new Burkhart Center for Autism Education and Research Aug. 24. The project will create a two-story autism education and research facility that in-

cludes 28,458-square feet of space for clinical facilities including the Burkhart Transition Academy, Teacher Preparation Academy and outreach program.

The center will be located at 2908 18th St., near Boston Avenue, and will house research and support space, class laboratories, academic offices and a nationally branded café. It will also feature an outdoor play area, public art and landscape enhancements.

Construction is expected to be completed by August 2013.

According to a recent study by The Education Trust, Texas Tech is a leading university for Hispanic and African-American students.

The report states that Texas Tech did a significant job of closing the gap between completion rates for Hispanic and white students, and therefore, ranks among the “Top Gap Closers.” Between 2004 and 2010, the Hispanic population at Texas Tech has grown by more than 30 percent.

Texas Tech fared well with its African-American student population as well, ranking ninth in the “Top 25 Gainers in Black Student Graduation Rates among Public Institutions, 2004-2010,” increasing its graduation rate by more than 18 percentage points.

The Education Trust is a research and advocacy organization that promotes high academic achievement for all students at all levels.

Texas Tech University and the University of New York in Prague (UNYP) are now formal educational partners. Provost of Texas Tech Bob Smith, Ph.D., and president of UNPY Elias Foutsis recently signed a reciprocal agreement that will encourage and facilitate the exchange of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty research alliances between the two institutions.

The relationship between the two universities began in 2004 under the leadership of John Masselli, Haskell Taylor Professor of Taxation, as part of the Rawls College of Business summer program in Prague. Since then, more than 200 Rawls College of Business students and 15 UNYP students have participated in this study abroad program. During the last year, a team from Texas Tech has worked together with the administration of UNYP to transition the relationship from a mere affiliation to that of a reciprocal exchange program.

Officials at Texas Tech University commemorated the launch of The Institute for the Study of Western Civilization at a showcase in mid-October. The institute, the only program of its kind among major U.S. universities, aims to rekindle the academic interest in the study of Western civilization’s extraordinary character.

The talk and reception introduced Stephen H. Balch, Ph.D., recipient of the President’s National Humanities medal and a leading authority on Western Civilization Studies, who will serve as the institute’s founding director.

As part of the Honors College, the institute will foster discussion and research on the nature, origins and future of the West, exploring topics such as the relationship between liberty, individualism and progress; the Judeo-Christian tradition; the West’s special compact with reason; American exceptionalism; and the West’s Utopian and revolutionary impulses.

Texas Tech University has joined the “Got Your 6” campaign, a national movement led by the entertainment industry that will help create a new conversation where veterans and military families are perceived as both leaders and civic assets.

In military vernacular, the expression “got your six” means “I’ve got your back, and in turn, you have mine.” The reciprocal nature of this statement underlies the message that the “Got Your 6” campaign strives to spread to all Americans.

Texas Tech has done its part in helping provide that support. The MVP, part of the Division of Institutional Diversity, Equity and Community Engagement, currently serves around 1,300 veterans or veteran dependents.

The program also helps veterans off campus by keeping them informed about several agencies around town that offer services to veterans free of charge or at a minimal cost.

MVP also has implemented the Green Zone, a program aimed at training faculty and staff about student veterans and their needs. Texas Tech currently has about 400 faculty and staff who are veterans and a veteran liaison in every academic college.

Texas Tech University was again named to the 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools® by G.I. Jobs Magazine. The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus. This is the fourth year the university has received this distinction.

Texas Tech University officials broke ground oct. 5 on a new facility to house the Bob L. Herd Department of Petroleum Engineering , welcoming

a new era in petroleum engineering production and operations education.

The $20 million project will house 40,000-square feet of formal teaching environments with hands-on applications and modern research facilities. Funding was provided entirely through generous donor support during the Texas Tech University System’s $1 billion campaign, Vision and Tradition: The Campaign for Texas Tech.

The new building will sit in the northeast corner of the engineering key and feature the characteristic arches that surround the current engineering buildings. Upon completion, the building will be one of two stand-alone petroleum engineering departments in the country.

Nationally, there are only 15 petroleum engineering programs, and Texas Tech’s program is one of the top five largest, currently averaging around 500 students per semester.

The new facility will be able to accommodate 600 undergraduate students.

Construction will be complete in time to offer courses and instruction in Fall 2013.

On Sept. 25, Texas Tech University School of Law marked the 45th anniversary of its first day of classes. After a hard-won fight at the Texas Legislature led by the Hon. Alvin R. Allison, former Texas House Representative and Texas Tech University graduate, the doors of Texas Tech Law opened in 1967 with 72 students and Dean Richard Amandes at the helm.

The law school started humbly but quickly flourished under Amandes’ leadership, who increased enrollment to 450 by the time he stepped down in 1977. Today the law school student body totals 692 and is developing many innovative programs, such as the regional externship program, under the guidance of Dean Darby Dickerson.

During the past 45 years, the law school has grown physically and in terms of programs, with highlights including the 2008 opening of the Mark and Becky Lanier Professional Development Center and nationally renowned programs in advocacy, law and science, military law and health law. Texas Tech Law has garnered 28 national advocacy titles.

Texas Tech officials announced plans to remove and preserve the Southwest Conference Circle to a yet to be determined site on Texas Tech’s cam-

pus. Located by the Exercise Sciences Center, also known as the old men’s gym, the SWC Circle will have to be removed because of construction of the new Petroleum Engineering Research building for the Bob L. Herd Department of Petroleum Engineering.

Because of the fragile nature of the SWC Circle, only remnants of the circle are expected to survive the removal process. Those remnants will be augmented with new materials to create a newly designed tribute to the SWC Circle.

The circle contains terrazzo and concrete artwork of the teams that comprised the SWC. The landmark was originally constructed when Texas Tech was admitted to the conference in 1956. It served as the site of pep rallies and spirit-raising events for many years.

Mauck has a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics and a second bachelor’s degree in family financial planning. He is senior financial adviser at Clintsman Financial Planning in Southlake, Texas.

McWhorter received the Distinguished Alumni

Award. She has a bachelor’s degree in home economics, food and nutrition, business and merchandising option, and master’s degree in home economics education. During her 31-year career with the Texas AgriLife Extension Agency, she spoke in more than a thousand news articles and television and radio programs on a variety of projects. Now retired, she works as a contract educator for the Child and Adult Care Food Program.

Hagler is a nationally recognized and highly regarded theatre consultant with extensive experience in the design and equipping of performing arts facilities including the United Spirit Arena. He is a partner of Schuler Shook, theatre planners and lighting designers.

Hickman is an independent producer who was formerly the senior

vice president of production for MFM Worldwide Television. He supervised production for many well-known television programs, such as “The Loveboat” and “MacGyver.”

Leland is a professional actor who portrayed football booster John Aubrey in the movie “Friday Night Lights” and more recently, the same character, whose name was changed to Buddy Garrity, in the award-winning television series also entitled “Friday Night Lights.”

Thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends of Texas Tech, the POW/MIA flag will fly over Memorial Circle on designated days. Alumnus Bobby Waddle ’55, who is a military veteran and member of the Texas Tech Alumni Association National Board of Directors, felt that flying the POW/MIA flag at Texas Tech’s Memorial Circle was a necessity. Waddle approached Chancellor Kent R. Hance regarding the issue, and Hance and Juan Muñoz, Ph.D., vice provost for undergraduate education and vice president for institutional diversity equity, and community engagement, approved Waddle’s request. Waddle, along with Glenn Gantt, a Texas Tech development officer in the Dallas field office, and Gary Stone, a 1978 graduate who is vice president of engineering at Five States Energy Co. in Dallas, helped ensure delivery of the first flag. Stone is a member of the Dutch Treat Wildcatters, a social club whose members are involved in all aspects of oil and gas production. The Dutch Treat Wildcatters, along with Waddle, agreed to fund a portion of the endowment created to maintain the POW/MIA flag program. The flag will be flown six days a year: Armed Forces Day; Memorial Day; Flag Day, June 14; Independence Day, July 4; National POW/MIA Recognition Day and Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Martin’s research interests include control theory, the applications of algebraic and differential geometry to problems in numerical analysis, and the development and analysis of mathematical models in agriculture, the environment and medicine. He led the Texas Tech group that performed the detailed analysis and modeling of the 1987 measles epidemic in Lubbock.

Gill is one of 51 recipients of the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award and will use the funding to study the use of pollen grains for oral vaccine delivery. The pollen grain-based oral vaccination approach has safely stimulated a successful immune response in mice. The NIH grant will allow Gill to continue development of this system and bring it closer to human use.

Texas Tech University employees donaated a record amount of money to the Lubbock Area United Way. The State Employee Charitable Campaign is held in conjunction with the 11-week United Way campaign, and Texas Tech University and Texas Tech University System gave a total of $484,865 of the $5.5 million total for the 2012 Lubbock United Way campaign.

The Texas Tech College of Architecture honored distinguished alumni at a reception Oct. 18. The event was

held in conjunction with the Texas Society of Architects 73rd Annual Convention and Design Expo. Honorees include James. B. “Jim” Boggs ’62, F. Marie Hall, Scott D. Hall ’89 and Daniel S. Hart ’90.

Boggs received the Distinguished Alumnus award. He is an architect for facilities maintenance for the City of Corpus Christi and has been an architect for 50 years. He works as an architect for facilities maintenance for the City of Corpus Christi. The award honors graduates who have clearly defined excellence in their profession and dedication to the field of architecture.

F. Marie Hall received the Kleinschmidt Award, which recognizes individuals who have attained distinguished achievements in their careers and have represented Texas Tech in an exemplary manner. She established the F. Marie Hall Institute for Rural and Community Health at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and in the College of Architecture, the H. Deane Pierce Endowed Chair.

Scott D. Hall received the Alumni Design

Award from the Texas Tech University Architecture Alumni Association. This year is the first for the award, which recognizes significant projects and showcases the talents of the alumni. As an architect for Omniplan Architects, he is recognized for Watermark Community Church, a 70,000-square-foot structure in Dallas.

Hart also received the Alumni Design Award.

Employed by Parkhill, Smith and Cooper, he is recognized for the Dollye Neal Garden Chapel, located on the Midland College campus. With seating for 50, the structure is described as a chapel within a chapel.

Golden, Harrod and Bagley The Texas Tech University Rawls College of Business honored two distinguished alumni— Randy L. Golden ’77 and Gary W. Harrod ’71—and a distinguished friend, James W. Bagley, on Oct. 25.

Golden , a management graduate, owns Golden Beverage Solutions. He got his start in the beer industry at Texas Tech as a Miller Brewing Co. campus representative. He then became general manager of Andrews Distributing and led the company to become one of the 10 largest beer distributors in the country. With 34 years of knowledge in the industry, Golden launched Golden Beverage Solutions in 2010.

Harrod , a finance graduate, is the founder, CEO and president of Harrod

Properties. He worked for Proctor and Gamble before joining Southern Airways, now known as Northwest Airlines, in Atlanta, where he was responsible for sales, advertising, mergers and acquisitions. Herrod was managing area partner of Trammell Crow Company from 1978 until 1990 when he founded Herrod Properties Inc. He has been involved in the development of more than 19 million square feet of office, industrial and retail projects.

Bagley , chairman and CEO of Lam research, received his B.S. in electrical engineering in 1961 and his M.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1966 from Mississippi State University. Upon graduation, he joined Texas Instruments Inc. in Dallas with a career that lasted nearly 16 years. In 1981, James joined Applied Materials in California. In 1996, he became chairman and CEO of OnTrak Systems, Inc., an industry leader in wafer cleaning. Upon completion of the merger of Lam Research Corporation and OnTrak Systems in 1997, James became CEO of Lam and has since transitioned to chairman of the board. Under his leadership, Lam Research Corp. has become one of the NASDAQ 100 companies, a Forbes’ Platinum 400 companies, and one of the 10 best-managed companies in the semiconductor industry.

Angelo State University’s New President Named |

Texas Tech University System Chancellor Kent R. Hance, along with ASU officials, announced that Brian May, Ph.D., is the new president of Angelo State University.

The decision was made official at a news conference Monday, Oct. 15, at the C.J. Davidson Conference Center in the Houston Harte University Center. There were approximately 60 applicants for the position.

“Being selected as president of my alma mater is both humbling and exciting,” says May. “As an alumnus of Angelo State, it’s my dream job. I look forward to both the challenges and opportunities.

I was fortunate to be able to be part of the team that worked with alumni to move ASU into the Texas Tech system, and I thoroughly enjoyed that process. Expanding my role within the Texas Tech University System will allow me to ensure Angelo State University continues to pursue excellence.”

May, who grew up in the South Plains town of Sudan, is the first alumnus of ASU to serve as its president. He received bachelor of science and master of science degrees in animal science, and a doctoral degree in ruminant nutrition from Texas A&M University.

May became a member of the agriculture faculty in 1994, and has served in various roles. In April he was named ASU provost and vice president of academic affairs. He was also the dean of the College of Graduate Studies and a professor in the Department of Agriculture.

the legacy program

S

ince its beginning four years ago, the Texas Tech Alumni Association Legacy Program has grown steadily. More than 600 Alumni Association members participate.

The idea behind the program is to build loyalty among future generations of Red Raiders. Children who are members learn about Texas Tech and its traditions long before they are ready for college, encouraging them to attend school there.

“The Alumni Association wants to do everything we can to help support the continued growth of Texas Tech University and help achieve our goal of reaching 40,000 students by 2020,” says Courtney Marshall, director of membership for the Texas Tech Alumni Association.

“The Legacy program will help facilitate this growth by inspiring new generations of Red Raiders.”

Members of the Legacy Program receive a welcome letter, an introductory gift of a stadium blanket and a personalized membership card. The children also receive birthday greetings, Texas Tech-themed, age-appropriate gifts on key birthdays and invitations to Legacy Program

events. Other gifts are a storybook, piggy bank, backpack, pillowcase, notebook and pen and keychain.

Parents and grandparents who are members of the Alumni Association at the Century Level ($100 or more annually) and above are eligible to enroll their children and grandchildren. Enrollment is free for the first 10 children someone enrolls. For more than 10 children, there is a $10 fee, per child, for handling.

Richard Romero and his wife, Maria Venzor Romero, are both 1990 graduates of the College of Engineering and members of the Texas Tech Alumni Association. Richard is president of Optimized Pipeline Solutions LLC in Danbury, Texas, and Maria is a project manager with Dow Chemical Co. in Lake Jackson.

They also are the proud parents of Anthony, 14, and Matthew, 11, who are members of the Legacy Program.

“Before my wife and I had kids, we gave money for scholarships and other support, but once we had kids, our resources went to them,” Romero says.

“Now that they’re older, we’re getting involved again. We had heard about the Legacy Program in the magazine and thought we’d like to enroll them.

“It was designed to be a surprise for them. When the packages arrived, I said, ‘Look at these packages for you.’ Anthony’s reaction when he saw the red fleece blanket was, ‘This is so awesome!’ Matthew said, ‘Cool!’ It was almost like Christmas. They wrap themselves up in them while we all watch the Tech game.”

Avid Red Raider fans Sam and Patti Sagebiel of Fredericksburg, Texas, are co-presidents of the Texas Tech Alumni Association Hill Country Chapter. Sam graduated with a bachelor's degree from the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources in 1970 and retired assistant plant manager and building maintenance supervisor of Victoria College in Victoria, Texas. He now owns Mesquite Mystique.

They have six grandchildren in the Legacy Program—Spencer Tate Sagebiel, 10, and his triplet sisters, Samantha Caye Sagebiel, Seslee Paige Sagebiel, and Sydney Ann Sagebiel, 7; Whit Samuel Swanson, 2; and Rhett Hamilton Swanson, 2 months.

When asked why they chose to enroll the children in the program, Sam says, “We’re crazy Texas Tech fans, and we would love for them to go to Texas Tech.”

“The four oldest are totally geared toward attending Texas Tech,” Patti says. “The last two are too young, but we have the two-year-old getting his Guns Up when watching the games.”

“That one (Whit) we may have to work on because his mom went to UT and his dad went to the University of Illinois,” Sam adds.

Making sure their children have an appreciation for Texas Tech and look forward to attending school there is a big reason many people enroll them in the program.

“I want her to be as proud of Texas Tech as I am,” says Dustin Balog of his eightyear-old daughter, Alexis. “It seemed like a good way for her to get a peek at the great qualities and traditions from another source than just her dad.”

Balog, who earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2001 and MBA in 2002, works in business development and project management at My Modular LLC in Dallas.

“She is very proud when she receives a package,” he says. “It makes her feel important and recognized as a part of something.

She loves the photos of Raider Red, and the blanket is her favorite.

“Everything she has received is something that she can actually interact with or use so the connection to Texas Tech is even greater.

The quality is great so the gifts will last several years and get plenty of use.”

If you want to encourage your children or grandchildren to become Red Raiders, the Legacy Program is a great way to do so. Not only will they enjoy the gifts they receive, but they will learn a lot about their parents’ or grandparents’ alma mater.

Finding happiness is a lot about attitude.

For instance, how do you approach big changes in life? The prospect of moving to another country doesn’t appeal to most people. The prospect of moving to the Middle East appeals to even fewer. One alumna is using her unexpected time in the Middle East as a priceless tool: a way to teach her children about adventure and adaptation.

When her husband came home and asked, “What do you think about relocating to Abu Dhabi?” Stephanie Sproul Rentfro ’93 jokes that her response was, “Abu what?”

That was in the Spring of 2010. By December 2010, Stephanie and her husband Joe, a graduate of Texas A&M University, and their three children, had relocated from Port St. Joe, Fla., and were settled into their new home in the United Arab Emirates. Quite literally a world—or half a world, anyway—away from their beloved beach house.

The depressed United States economy drove the Rentfros to the Middle East. Joe specializes in tourism development and has held executive positions with Marriott, Aramark and St. Joe Co. After he was laid off from St. Joe Co., he started his own successful consulting business. While he enjoyed consulting, he was ready to get back into resort development when he was approached with the offer to head east—way, way east.

Stephanie belongs one of Fort Davis’s original ranching families, the Sprouls.

“It was 1886 when the Sprouls settled in Fort Davis,” she explains. “Robert Stuart Sproul settled in the area and originally he was deep in the mountains, but a hard winter drove his cattle to migrate. He chose to homestead there (where his cattle migrated, close to the town of Fort Davis) and slowly purchased land from the railroad.”

Even through several generations, Stephanie’s family still owns the working ranch in Jeff Davis County. She and her children spend their summers there and use it as a jumping-off spot for visiting friends around the state and in Florida.

Travel has long been a love for Stephanie. Growing up in the remote, mountainous small town of Fort Davis triggered her sense of wanderlust. The closest “big” town to Fort Davis is Midland to the east and El Paso to the west, and both of those are about three hours away.

As a child she enjoyed anything that involved new places, whether it was traveling around Texas or taking trips to visit family in California. During college she’d traveled to Mexico, but it was an extended trip post-college that opened her eyes to the joy of seeing the world.

Stephanie, who majored in communication studies and graduated in 1993, devoted herself to learning Spanish while at Tech. In the spring of 1994 she traveled to Ecuador, where she studied and lived for six months.

“That trip helped sell me on travel,” she notes. “I graduated in December, then went to Ecuador in February. I decided to go to Ecuador because it was cheaper than Spain and I could stay longer. I think I just loved exploring a new culture and really living in the culture, completely immersed.”

The experience was unforgettable, but not necessarily because it was perfect. It was a trip that provided experiences across the spectrum. Stephanie talks about being mugged just five days into her trip.

“We left our hotel, three of us, early one morning to go the bus station,” she recalls. “We wanted to go to a local market. Anyway, we turned onto a side street that wasn’t very busy, and seven guys jumped us from behind. They took our jewelry, jackets, passports. I had money in my shoe, so it wasn’t taken, luckily. It was very scary, but thankfully we weren’t hurt!”

“For the most part, they’re the same as in the United States,” Stephanie says. “The stock isn’t always as dependable. For example, you may see a brand of chips one day, then the next visit to the store, it’s not there anymore. The produce is great. They have to import 90 percent of their food and produce from places like India, Europe and even the U.S.”

Stephanie says her family misses American beef. Most of Abu Dhabi’s beef is supplied by Australia. If American beef is available, it’s very expensive.

Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates The thought of moving to the Middle East is uninteresting for some, and terrifying for others. There is, however, a vast difference between life in Abu Dhabi—the second-largest city in the UAE, Dubai being the first—and life in many other Middle Eastern countries.

Abu Dhabi is the most Westernized city in the Middle East. It is cosmopolitan, chic and, well, extremely wealthy. Abu Dhabi has been classified as the richest city in the world by Fortune magazine and CNN—other lists rank it as the No. 2 richest city. That being said, there is a great divide between the very rich and the very poor. The wealth is mainly derived from oil production, which created a city that is an enormous draw for Western tourists, while at the same time requiring loads of labor, and much of that labor force is paid extremely low wages.

That labor force has created an unusual dynamic that makes this city stand out: Stephanie notes that only about 15 percent of the population is native to the UAE. Roughly 85 percent of those who live in Abu Dhabi are expatriates who hail from other countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, America and Canada.

The city, which is really an island jutting into the Persian Gulf, is linked to land by a series of bridges. The highway system is ranked as one of the best in the world. On the west it’s bordered by Saudi Arabia, on the east lies Oman.

“We had to drive to Muscat, Oman, one time,” Stephanie says. “I expected the drive to be vast expanses of desert with terrible roads.

But, the highways are pristine. They’re unbelievable, smooth and lit the entire way. There’s some expansion outward, from the cities, but mostly it’s just open desert.”

Islam is the official state religion, but a variety of religions are represented in Abu Dhabi. The Rentfros attend church regularly.

Women are not required to cover themselves. Stephanie and Joe both own vehicles. Their children attend a school for expatriates, where most of the teachers are American and Canadian. The student population is 66 percent American, but there are 55 different nationalities represented in the school. And the children are learning Arabic, and, because of Islamic law, they attend school Sunday through Thursday.

“There are lots of things to get used to, but my kids are being exposed to so many different cultures,” Stephanie notes. “My daughter came home one day and said, ‘Mommy, I want to go on vacation to Serbia.’ She had two kids in her class who are Serbian.”

The UAE has modern movie theatres, grocery stores and restaurants. Almost any chain restaurant in America can be found in Abu Dhabi. Of course, there are also many fine dining establishments that originated in the UAE. The hotels, resorts and office buildings reflect an air of decadence that’s not surprising, given the wealth of the nation. As a nod to Abu Dhabi’s desire to be viewed as forward-thinking, most everyone speaks English. If one looks, the old ways can still be seen: street vendors peddling wares, markets selling spices and grains in bulk.

It’s overreaching to refer to Abu Dhabi as laid back, but compared to other Middle Eastern countries, it seems that way.

We started out in Bangkok, then headed North to Chiang Rai for a few days, where we rode elephants (see photos on p. 27), visited Myanmar and Laos, then headed south to the beach, staying for a few days in Phuket. The kids enjoyed Chiang Rai the most. I think our morning visits with the elephants contributed to that! The people in Thailand were so hospitable and absolutely lovely. I’d go back in a heartbeat. While in Phuket, we ran into a family that Joe and the boys had met in Abu Dhabi at a golf tournament—small world! What really makes it small is that this family doesn’t even live in Abu Dhabi, but in Mumbai, India—we just happened to be in Thailand at the same time, at the same hotel!”

Incidentally, one of the daughters of her host family, Monserrath Astudillo, is now a famous actress in Ecuador, where she has her own TV show.

Stephanie lived with the Astudillo family in Cuenca who had three children, none of whom spoke English. She says the half-year was spent in class La Universidad del Azuay, enjoying the bar scene and traveling around Ecuador.

“One of my most memorable trips when I was living in Ecuador was to the Galapagos Islands,” she says. “We flew from Cuenca to Guayaquil, then on to the Galapagos. Once we got there, we boarded a small yacht with 14 passengers total. We cruised for five or six days, I think. We saw all the main islands, the marine life, such as the blue-footed booby, sea lions, marine and land iguanas, the giant tortoises and seals. We even got to swim with the seals in the wild. We hiked and swam a lot. And we saw the Galapagos penguins, which are the smallest penguins in the world. We saw the flightless Cormorant, which looks just like a regular Cormorant, but they don’t fly, because they don’t have any natural predators there. They just dive for their fish, then dry their wings out by stretching them out.”

She also attended her first soccer, or fútbol, match in Guayaquil— Ecuador vs. Peru. As with many international soccer games, the event didn’t fail to be raucous.

“We made the mistake of sitting with the Peruvians,” she says. “We had tear gas thrown at us as well as lit cigarettes. We had to walk out of the stadium through a wall of police officers. It was definitely a different experience from attending football games at Tech.”

Not long after returning from Ecuador, Stephanie left Texas for Washington, D.C. She moved to be closer to Joe and was working as a

flight attendant for Southwest Airlines, which allowed her to travel throughout the United States at little to no cost. In 1998 she married Joe, who booked a three-week honeymoon trip to Spain. The excursion to Spain, along with the six months in Ecuador, cemented her desire to travel.

The couple moved to Atlanta, Ga., and then, in 2004, they moved to Port St. Joe, Fla. They lived a stone’s throw from the beach, which was heaven on earth for the Rentfro family.

Occasionally, Stephanie says, they talked about moving back to Texas. But the crushing economy and Joe’s job offer shifted the family’s path. Joe accepted a position with a tourism development company, owned by the UAE’s royal family, that builds resorts in the UAE. Both Stephanie and Joe had to learn a lot about the Middle East. Their dual enjoyment of exploration helped them settle in and cope with the culture shock. Stephanie decided she would make the most of her family’s time overseas by traveling extensively and sharing immensely different ways of life with her children.

“For the same as it would cost for a short trip in America, we can travel to so many amazing places from Abu Dhabi,” Stephanie says. “We spent spring break in Thailand, traveled to Nairobi, Kenya, and Russia. We even traveled to Kuwait for a baseball tournament my son played in.”

By maintaining a sense of adventure, the family has ensured their time overseas will be well-spent.

Do they want to move back to America? Yes, eventually. But right now, Stephanie says, they’re blooming where they’ve been planted.

The facility took approximately 15 months to complete and offers two-bedroom and fourbedroom options, which are co-ed by suite.

All suites are fully furnished with amenities not seen in most dorms on campus, including ceiling fans, a full-size refrigerator, microwave and one bathroom for every two residents.

Community living spaces in each suite include leather furniture and serve as a spot for students to relax and feel at home. The amenities and luxuries offered in Boston Hall made it the newest campus hot-spot—the dorm was rapidly filled with students eager to enjoy their new home-away-from-home.

For students missing their mother’s home cooking, The Commons by United Supermarkets is just a few feet away to fill their stomachs with fresh, made-toorder food.

The 20,500-square foot facility offers two floors of meal options for students.

The first floor has five options available to visitors: Grillz, a grill that cooks up classic hamburger meals; Greens & Things, a salad bar for those looking for healthier options; Khan’s Mongolian Grill, a grill offering classic Mongolian plates; Parrillas, a Mexican food option for those looking for zest and spice; and Just Say Cheez, a macaroni bar with multiple cheesy options.

The second floor offers even more delicious meal options for those with different tastes: Chef’s Corner, a place to go for classic home-cooking; UCreate, for those looking to build their own sandwich or chicken wing combination; and Ciao Down!, an Italian option with its own brick oven and savory pizza and pasta.

If you are just looking for a small snack such as a candy bar or chips, the first floor of The Commons offers many snack options to satisfy your cravings.

The Commons is open Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Saturday through Sunday 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Another unique dining option found in the facility is Einstein Bros® Bagels.

Although they are famous for their bagels, breakfast and lunch sandwiches and various coffees are available. You can try these options out for yourself Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Friday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Residents of Boston Hall also have access to wireless Internet, limitless laundry on each floor, study spaces and lounge areas. The Commons Food Court by United Supermarkets is attached to the residence hall and offers a staggering array of options. (see sidebar on facing page) According to Interim President Lawrence Shovanec, the 178,000-square foot facility demonstrates Texas Tech’s dedication to its students.

“Boston Hall is a testament to the rapid growth of the university and the desire of many young, talented students to pursue higher education at Texas Tech,” Shovanec said. “This beautiful facility will be a point of pride for the university. Not only does it represent a period of unprecedented growth at Texas Tech, it also reflects the commitment of the administration to our students.”

This residence hall will help accommodate the growth of the university with Texas Tech housing about 21 to 23 percent of students on campus.

Kent R. Hance, chancellor of the Texas Tech University System, said he sees this as an opportunity for the university to grow.

“We are excited to offer state-of-the art facilities like The Commons by United Supermarkets,” Hance said. “The need for more dining space reflects the impressive growth of our university, and I am confident we will be able to accommodate increasing number of students in the coming years.”

Rear Adm. (Sel) John D. Alexander Rear Adm. (Sel) John D. Alexander has had a long and distinguished career with the U.S. Navy. He is the assistant commander of Navy Personnel Command for Career Management (PERS-4).

The Port Neches, Texas, native was commissioned in December 1982 through the Aviation Officer Candidate program, and designated a naval flight officer in November 1983. He graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering; King’s College, University of London, with a Master of Arts degree in Defense Studies; the Royal Naval Staff College Greenwich (UK); the U.S. Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program; the Joint Forces Staff College; and,the Navy Executive Development Course from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia.

Alexander completed sea duty assignments as an A-6E Bombardier/ Navigator with the “Boomers” of VA 165 embarked in USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63), the “Silver Foxes” of VA 155 embarked in USS Independence (CV 62), Cruiser Destroyer Group 3 as Strike Operations Officer embarked in USS Nimitz (CVN 68), the “Main Battery” of VA 196 for his Aviation Department Head tour embarked in USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) and as Executive Officer of USS Dwight D Eisenhower (CVN 69).

The admiral’s duty assignments consist of instructor duty at the A-6E Fleet Replacement Squadron, VA 128; aide to the commander, Medium Attack, Tactical Electronic Warfare Wing Pacific; EA-6B Electronic Countermeasures Officer transition training at VAQ 129; head of Aviation Commander Assignments (PERS-431) at the Navy Personnel Command; and executive assistant to the director, Joint Staff.

His command tours include the “Black Ravens” of VAQ 135; USS Juneau (LPD 10), forward deployed to Sasebo, Japan; and the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72).

He has accumulated more than 3200 flight hours with 707 carrier arrested landings.

In April 2012, the Texas Tech University Whitacre College of Engineering named Alexander a Distinguished Engineer.

Other personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (two awards), Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Air Medal (three strike/flight awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), and various unit, campaign and service awards.

While a student at Texas Tech, Alexander was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He also met his future wife, the former Charlotte Scott (BSE 1982), during college. During his senior year, he was the Student Association vice president for external affairs.

He and his wife live in Millington, Tenn. Their son, Andrew, a Texas A&M graduate, works as a sales representative in Southeast Texas. Their daughter, Casey, is a junior at Ole Miss studying mechanical engineering.

Scott Pelley One of the most visible people ever to have attended Texas Tech University is Scott Pelley, anchor and managing editor of the “CBS Evening News” and a correspondent for the CBS news magazine “60 Minutes.”

Pelley began his journalism career long before he enrolled at Texas Tech. At age 15, the San Antonio, Texas, native worked as a copy boy at the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal newspaper.

He eventually worked at KSEL-TV in Lubbock from 1975 to 1978 and then at KXAS-TV in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex from 1978 to 1981. He was a producer and reporter for WFAA-TV Dallas/Fort Worth from 1982 to 1989.

Pelley’s distinguished career with CBS began in 1989 in New York City. Since he joined the network, he has covered major national and worldwide events. From 1997 to 1999, he served as the network’s chief White House correspondent. In 2001, he reported from the scene of the collapsing World Trade Center towers. He reported extensively from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Pelley joined “60 Minutes” in 2004. Since then, half of all the major awards won by that broadcast have been won by Pelley’s team of producers, reporters, photographers and editors. Pelley and his team’s distinguished body of work have received an Alfred I. duPontColumbia Silver Baton, three George Foster Peabody awards, 20 national Emmy awards, five Edward R. Murrow awards, a George Polk and a Loeb award, as well as honors from the Society of Professional Journalists, Investigative Reporters and Editors and the Writers Guild of America. Twenty-one of those awards have been earned for his work over the past five years on “60 Minutes.”

The anchor’s recent “60 Minutes” segments include reports on the space industry’s new focus on entrepreneurism, the economic and human toll that shift means for government’s retired Space Shuttle program and its workers, and a hard look at the harm caused to neighborhoods by rampant home foreclosures. His extraordinary list of interview subjects includes: President George Bush; two unprecedented interviews with Federal Reserve Chairman, Ben Bernanke, during the recent economic upheaval known as the Great Recession.

It was the first time in decades that a sitting Federal Reserve Chairman allowed an interview. Pelley also has interviewed Justice John Paul Stevens; Afghan President Hamid Karzai; Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad; and the astonishing story of Mike Williams, the chief electronics technician on the Deepwater Horizon who survived the explosion that caused the Gulf oil spill—a story that won an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Siler Baton and two Emmys.

Pelley serves on the board of directors of the International Rescue Committee, the refugee relief agency headquartered in New York City. He is co-chair of the IRC’s Board of Overseers. In 2006, he was inducted into the Texas Tech University College of Media & Communication Hall of Fame. He also serves on that college’s National Professional Advisory Board.

He and his wife, Jane, have two children, Reece John Pelley and Blair Pelley. The family lives in Connecticut.

Robert J. Salem, m.d., f.a.c.s.

West Texas native Robert J. Salem, M.D., FACS, is a noted general and vascular surgeon and researcher who has helped countless people in Lubbock and beyond with his knowledge and skills. He is currently chief medical officer emeritus of Covenant Health and clinical professor of surgery at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock.

After graduating as valedictorian from Sudan High School in Sudan, Texas, Salem earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Texas Tech in 1950.

He went on to graduate in the top 10 percent of his medical school class at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, where he was a member of the honorary Alpha Omega Alpha.

While in medical school during the Korean War, he was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and served an internship at Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Denver, where he served on a medical team that treated sitting President, Dwight D. “Ike” Eisenhower, who had been admitted there with a heart attack. His subsequent assignment was to a highly strategic Air Force hospital in Paris, France, embarked him on a succession of extraordinary experiences.

After discharge from the Air Force, his surgical training commenced at the beginning of the modern era of cardiovascular surgery in Houston under the tutelage of two of the most renowned cardiovascular surgeons of the 20th century, Michael E. “Mike” DeBakey, M.D., and Denton A. Cooley, M.D. His personal relationship with each has had a profound impact on both his personal and professional life.

After completing his residency, Salem returned to Lubbock to found SWAT Surgical Associates. He pioneered peripheral vascular surgery in West Texas and is renowned for his role in bringing heart surgery to the South Plains of Texas. In 1970, he developed the first open-heart surgical program at Methodist Hospital in Lubbock.

When the medical school at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center opened, Salem became the first chairman of the Department of Surgery. He later began serving as clinical professor of surgery, a position he still holds.

Active in Lubbock community, Salem is past president of Lubbock-CrosbyGarza Medical Society, Lubbock Heart Association and American Cancer Society, Lubbock Chapter. Another accomplishment is his serving as the first president and founding member of the Texas Tech University School of Medicine Foundation Board. He also has served as vice president of Texas Surgical Society.

Salem received numerous awards and honors over the years for his work and dedication. He was named Outstanding Faculty Member of the Texas Tech University School of Medicine in 1974. He received the Hippocratic Award from the Lubbock-Crosby-Garza Medical Society in 1993. Salem received the John F. Lott Lubbock Distinguished Citizen of the year Award from the Boy Scouts of America, South Plains Council, in 2007.

In 2009, he was nominated as one of Lubbock’s 100 Most Influential People during the city’s first 100 years. He wrote his first book, “Sandstorms and Surgery” in 2010, and that year, he was elected president of the Michael E. DeBakey, M.D., International Surgical Society and served in that prestigious role for two years.

Following the establishment of the “Robert J. Salem, M.D., Historical Collection” at Covenant Health, Mayor Tom Martin proclaimed Aug. 3, 2010, as Robert J. Salem, M.D., Day in Lubbock.

In 2011, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center presented Salem the Dean’s Distinguished Lifetime Service Award, and in 2012, he was the recipient of the Larry King Cardiac Foundation Physicians Laureate Award, both for his longstanding commitments to the finest medical innovations, ethics and advancements.

An Aug. 31, 2006, feature article in the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal recounted the distinguished career and citizenship of Salem and summed it up thoroughly, “… he is considered the rarest type of physician, a doctor who combines extraordinary compassion with exceptional precision and skill.”

A Fitting Home Finale

Quiet now, with the final stragglers of a five-camera television crew well beyond the large iron entrance gate, the stadium rested in the heart of an early winter cold front that blasted through hours ago. The scene below now dipping into the late hours of the night was a stark contrast to the events of just moments earlier.

There, under the warm and powerful glow of those lights, Janine Beckie controlled the crowd of more than 1,200 at her will. Once on a short punch into the Oklahoma State goal, and later in the second half—a dramatic and nearly unstoppable strike that symbolized Texas Tech’s school record 14th victory of the season.

Though perhaps the most significant event of that chilly yet jubilant evening was the overwhelming sense this Friday night victory may not have been the final match held on their home field. Texas Tech had never advanced to the NCAA Championships—yet with 14 wins covering its resume, those close to the program felt this certainly would be the year the Red Raiders finally leaped over that longstanding barrier and into the NCAA Tournament.

“It was a relief,” Texas Tech head coach Tom Stone said. “There was a real sense of relief, and I was just so proud of our team that night.”

On Nov. 5, just days after Texas Tech won its first-ever postseason match at the Big 12 Championships, that inkling became reality. Inside a team watching party at the John Walker Soccer Complex, Tech learned its historic and unprecedented 2012 season indeed earned the Red Raiders their first-ever bid to the NCAA Championships.

“It’s just really special,” senior forward Dawn Ward said moments after the announcement. “For it to finally come, it just leaves me breathless.”

The announcement seemed all but perfectly fitting too as the Red Raiders would play their first-ever NCAA postseason match inside the complex that itself symbolizes the vast

growth of the program under the guidance of Stone and his staff. Stone, now in his sixth year, arrived in Lubbock prior to the 2007 season. Once on the South Plains, Stone inherited a program that won just two conference games in the previous three years.

But soon, he constructed a true program, and a new culture of women’s soccer at Texas Tech.

“There is so much more than just our team that has gone into where we are,” Stone said. “Everybody from the Athletic Department to the Board of Regents to John Walker to the soccer community— there has been this massive push to get us where we needed to go.”

They got there.

All the while, the John Walker Soccer Complex has grown in stride. It’s been a facility that has not only boosted the program’s identity—but has proven to be a true home field advantage to the surging Red Raider soccer team.

“It’s become one of my favorite feelings at Texas Tech,” Ward said “Walking up to the gate during game day is amazing. It’s really special. We don’t take what we’ve been given for granted.”

It’s an atmosphere that has gained national attention as well. In July, the Red

Texas Tech hosted a crowd of more than 1,700 for the first round of the NCAA Tournament—the third-largest first round crowd in the country.

Raiders learned they would be one of just eight women’s soccer programs nationally to host the NSCAA College Game of the Week on FOX Soccer, and defeated Oklahoma State 2-0 during it to close out the regular season.

Texas Tech finished the 2012 season with a dominant 9-1 record in games played at the John Walker Soccer Complex. It’s a trend the Red Raiders, and opponents, have become used to in recent years. Since its completion prior to the 2009 season, the pristine 1,500-seat stadium has played host to 38 home games, 27 of which have been Texas Tech victories—a .711 winning percentage.

“There’s been a different drive that we’ve had this year,” Ward said. “It’s been a consistent drive throughout our entire season and I think that has been a huge factor. We all want it, and we’ve all been on the same page.”

Yes, the John Walker Soccer Complex has grown into one of the toughest and most intimidating facilities in the nation—and the Red Raiders’ success has paralleled alongside.

With a third place finish in the Big 12 this year, Texas Tech has now improved in the final conference standings in four consecutive seasons. The Red Raiders finished 7th in 2009, 5th in 2010 and 4th in 2011 with at least five home wins in each season.

That inherent home field advantage has been built upon a foundation that carries into the Texas Tech and Lubbock community. With the victories has come an atmosphere for women’s soccer that few schools in the country can rival.

“For one, it’s an intimate setting,” Stone said. “There’s just a vibe between the players and the fans. Our fans just love to see our players be competitive and fight to the end. We have a ‘never-say-die’ mentality, and when you put all of that together under one roof—it makes for a very exciting place to see a college soccer game.”

The Red Raiders averaged over 1,300 fans during the 2011 season, which ranked No. 13 nationally, and hosted a streak of eight consecutive Friday night matches with over 1,000.

And so fittingly, the John Walker Soccer Complex concluded the 2012 home schedule with the largest stage of its short history.

“It’s just so exciting that every time I think about it I get emotional,” Ward said just days in advance of the NCAA First Round match. “It’s going to be exciting and it’s going to be fun. With our crowd and with our support it’s going to be such a great atmosphere.”

That night, she played in her final match at the John Walker Soccer Complex. The Midland, Texas native went on to score twice in a 2-0 shutout of North Texas as the Red Raiders hosted one of the largest postseason crowds in the country.

As her head coach described it—the Red Raiders’ NCAA postseason match was a gift to the community that has invested so much back into the program.

“To be able to give back to the community an NCAA game in our back yard,” Stone said. “I think it’s really awesome that we are able to give that back to everyone that has been so supportive of us. They get to enjoy the NCAA Championships.

It’s fitting—and it’s a great reward.”

Texas Tech advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament where the Red Raiders took top-seeded and Final Four participant Florida State into double overtime before falling 3-2 in Tallahassee, Fla.

When Richard A. Lewis retired, he could have spent his time relaxing and finding new hobbies; instead, he decided to finish something he had left undone. In 2011, Richard re-enrolled at Texas Tech University to finish his degree in political science. As a student at Texas Tech in 1963, Richard was caught up in collegiate distractions and called by the Selective Service, leaving his degree unfinished. In order to graduate, Richard needed to complete 30 hours of coursework with straight As. In August, he was able to celebrate his achievement of that difficult task with his family and friends at his commencement ceremony where he led the procession for the College of Arts & Sciences.

The Austin Chapter of the Texas Tech Alumni Association hosted a tailgate for the Texas Tech vs. Texas State football game Sept. 8.

He is executive director of state, federal and student support programs for Grand Prairie Independent School District.

Kerrville, Texas. While in college, he worked for The MED Group, which was fully headquartered in Lubbock until its sale in November 2010. It is a national network of more than 380 home medical equipment companies.

After graduating in 1987, Low accepted a full-time position with the company and worked his way up to the position of chief financial officer and vice president of finance. At the Alumni Association, he is responsible for all aspects of finance, business and human resource operations.

Low’s wife is Maria Petsch Low (BSE Education ’90), who teaches third grade at Whiteside Elementary in Lubbock. They have two children.

1991 (BS Mechanical Engineering) Round Rock, Texas, is the founder and president of Light Bohrd, headquartered just outside of Austin, where they design, manufacture and ship longboards, skateboards and snowboards. Every Light Bohrd is unique; featuring LED enhanced graphics capable of illuminating visual elements within each design. When the motion-activated LEDs are triggered, the board will illuminate the snarling grin of a cartoon monster or the surging punch from a superhero.

Amanda Hinojosa , a doctoral student in the Area of Management at the Rawls College of Business, won an Outstanding Reviewer award from the Gender and Diversity in Organizations division of the Academy of Management Conference.

Hinojosa authored a paper that was selected as a part of the Best Paper Proceedings for the HR division at the Academy of Management Conference. Hinojosa’s research interests focus on individuals and groups at work and include areas such as recruiting, leadership, work-family interaction, cognition, and identity.

Johnny Casarez , an MBA student with a concentration in entrepreneurship at the Rawls College of Business, is the recipient of a 2012 Texas Business Hall of Fame scholarship award in the amount of $10,000.

On Oct. 30, Casarez, along with other scholarship recipients from various schools around the state, were honored in Houston. A luncheon honoring all Texas Business Hall of Fame inductees was held, followed by a roundtable discussion where scholarships recipients had the opportunity to ask the recent Texas Business Hall of Fame inductees questions.

He will graduate in December 2012. This prestigious scholarship will assist him in starting his own software or web-based development firm in Lubbock.

T wo teams from the Texas Tech University School of Law advanced to the final round of the National Entertainment Law Negotiation Competition in Los Angeles in October, resulting in yet another national championship for the school’s widely recognized advocacy program.

Juliet Azarani , a third-year student, and Luke Calhoun , a second-year student, comprised the winning team that narrowly defeated classmates Jessica Haseltine, a third-year student, and Sara Norman, a second-year student, in the championship round. The win grows the law school’s count of state, national and international championships to 29.

The competition, hosted by Southwestern University School of Law, featured 24 teams from across the nation and focused on the resolution of legal disputes in the entertainment industry.

Both Tech Law teams received perfect scores in the tournament’s preliminary rounds before facing each other in the final.

Recently released national rankings for college debate teams placed two Texas Tech teams in the top 10 for the country. Kennedy and Maxwell are ranked ninth, while teammates Cashiola and Thompson are 10th in the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence’s 2012 rankings.

George Laity , a doctoral student in elec-

trical and computer engineering, has been awarded the Tom R. Burkes Award at the 2012 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference in San Diego, Calif.

In 2002, the IEEE International Power Modulator Conference created two Student Awards in honor of Tom R. Burkes, Ph.D., professor of electrical engineering at Texas Tech University (1937-1998). The awards are Outstanding Graduate Student Award and Exceptional Undergraduate Student Award.

N A S A representatives honored Texas Tech Whitacre College of Engineering students in October with a nomination for the 2012 Rotary National Award for Space Achievement (RNASA) Stellar Award Each year, the RNASA Foundation solicits Stellar Award nominations of space industry workers and teams whose accomplishments hold the greatest promise for furthering future activities in space.

Lockheed Martin Corp. nominated the Students Shaping America’s Next Spacecraft (SSANS) for the honor. The program partnered students from Texas Tech and Frenship ISD to develop components for the Orion Spacecraft.

Ariana Poindexter , a sophomore chem-

ical engineering major, has been named the recipient of a 2012 Donald F. Othmer Sophomore Academic Excellence Award.

The Sophomore Academic Excellence Award is presented to the one National AIChE student member in each student chapter who has attained the highest scholastic grade-point average during his/her freshman and sophomore years, on recommendation of the Student Chapter Adviser.

Poindexter recieved free registration for the AIChE Annual Student Conference in October in Pittsburgh, Penn.

Shawna Chen , a third-year doctoral

student, graduate research assistant and instructor at Rawls College of Business, won the ENT Division (Entrepreneurship) “Distinguished Reviewer” for the 2012 Academy of Management Annual Meeting in the fall. Chen’s research interests primarily focus on strategies for entrepreneurial action in all four corners of the world.
