A Texas Tech Hero THE TEX A S TEC H Alumni Association Endowment Trust has a scholarship honoring George Herman O’Brien, Jr., the only Texas Tech graduate ever to win a Medal of Honor.

The scholarship was established in 2005 by Douglas Jacobsen, Jerry W. Tate, Anthony E. Rogers and Davis L. Wright, all graduates of Midland Lee High School. It is awarded to a Texas Tech student who is an active U.S. Marine, or was honorably discharged; or is a direct descendent of a U.S. Marine who is active or was honorably discharged.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower presented Lt. O’Brien with the Medal of Honor for his “exceptionally daring and forceful leadership in the face of overwhelming odds” during the Korean War. O’Brien, a graduate of Big Spring High School, served in the Merchant Marine in World War II and received a degree in geology in 1950 from Texas Tech. He enlisted as a private in the Marine Corps Reserve while in college, was later commissioned as a lieutenant and joined the First Marine Division in Korea in September 1952.

After the war, he operated oil and gas wells in Texas and New Mexico as a petroleum geologist.

O’Brien passed away Friday, March 11, 2005, in Midland, Texas, at the age of 78 and was interred in the State Cemetery March 16, 2005.

Congressman Randy Neugebauer was able to have the United States Department of Veterans Affairs medical center in Big Spring, Texas, named the George H. O’Brien, Jr., Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

The following is the Marine Corps official account of Lt. O’Brien’s actions that gained him the Medal of Honor.

“With his platoon subjected to an intense mortar and artillery bombardment while preparing to assault a vitally important hill position on the main line of resistance which had been overrun by a numerically superior enemy force on the preceding night, 2d Lt. O’Brien leaped from his trench when the attack signal was given and, shouting for his men to follow, raced across an exposed saddle and up the enemy-held hill through a virtual hail of deadly small-arms, artillery and mortar fire.

“Although shot through the arm and thrown to the ground by hostile automatic-weapons fire as he neared the well-entrenched enemy position, he bravely regained his feet, waved his men onward, and continued to spearhead the assault, pausing only long enough to go to the aid of a wounded marine. Encountering the enemy at close range, he proceeded to hurl hand grenades into the bunkers and, utilizing his carbine to best advantage in savage hand-to-hand combat, succeeded in killing at least three of the enemy.

“Struck down by the concussion of grenades on three occasions during the subsequent action, he steadfastly refused to be evacuated for medical treatment and continued to lead his platoon in the assault for a period of nearly four hours, repeatedly encouraging his men and maintaining superb direction of the unit. With the attack halted, he set up a defense with his remaining forces to prepare for a counterattack, personally checking each position, attending to the wounded and expediting their evacuation.

“When a relief of the position was effected by another unit, he remained to cover the withdrawal and to assure that no wounded were left behind.

By his exceptionally daring and forceful leadership in the face of overwhelming odds, 2d Lt. O’Brien served as a constant source of inspiration to all who observed him and was greatly instrumental in the recapture of a strategic position on the main line of resistance. His indomitable determination and valiant fighting spirit reflect the highest credit upon himself and enhance the finest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.”

T E C H R E GE N T S H AV E raised tuition for this fall by 2.1 percent with no increase in fees. This increase is the lowest since 1993.

In 1993, the legislature gave regents authority to raise local tuition. This was an acknowledgment by the legislature that they were not funding the formula used in Texas (based on credit earned) at 100 percent. They weren't even close. Since that time, tuition and fees at Tech have gone up as follows:

It should be noted that Tech was probably the only major institution that twice has not raised tuition or fees during this period. It should also be noted that the tuition hikes have been considerably less in the last four years than in previous years.

Then there are the extra fees, which include a Student Union fee, an information technology fee, a medical services fee, a student service fee, an ID card fee, an international education fee, a recreation sports fee, a cultural affairs fee, a student athletics fee, a financial and record services fee, a student transportation fee, an energy fee and an advising and retention fee.

PEOPLE THREE PROFESSORS IN TEXAS TECH’S DEPARTMENT OF DESIGN WON NATIONAL AWARDS FOR THEIR RESEARCH IN INTERIOR DESIGN. Assistant professor of design MICHELLE PINSON , Ph.D., won the Graduate Student Research Award presented by the Interior Design Educator’s Council (IDEC) for her work as a doctoral student. Pinson’s research centered around the use of window murals depicting nature scenes in pediatric hospital rooms and whether the murals positively affected the health of patients.

Patients’ rooms with the decals were found to have improved heart rate and lower systolic blood pressure in comparison to patients in the rooms without decals. Associate professor of design DEBAJYOTI PATI , Ph.D., received the Best International Research Project by the International Academy of Design and Health for his research regarding the human brain’s reaction to nature. Assistant professor of design ERIN SCHAMBURECK received a peer reviewed award for Best Presentation for Scholarship of Design Research by the IDEC based on her presentation on understanding design problems that impact people with vision impairments at an IDEC conference.

MAY 21, RAWLS COLLEGE OF BUSINESS UNVEILED A BRONZE BUST OF DEAN EMERITUS MCINNES. ALLEN T. MCINNES , Ph.D., served as dean of the Rawls College of Business from

2001 to 2012. During his time, he saw the completion of the current building, helped initiate increases in doctoral student standards and national recognition for several of the college’s programs. He also helped establish the Rawls Career Management Center. Garland A. Weeks, Texas Tech alumnus and famed sculptor, created the bust.

HEAD COACH OF THE TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY CHESS TEAM, THE KNIGHT RAIDERS, ALEX ONISCHUK , recently qualified for the Chess World Cup, which will take place Sept. 10 through Oct. 4 in Baku, Azerbaijan. In April, he represented the United States in Armenia at the World Team Championship as a member of a five-player team selected based on world ratings where the world’s top 10 chess teams compete. The U.S. team, of which Onischuk was a member, finished in fifth place. Grand Master Onischuk has remained one of the world’s top players for the past 17 years.

SIVA VANAPALLI , PH.D., AN ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR AND

GRADUATE ADVISER IN THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING IN THE WHITACRE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, was invited to showcase his technology at the 2015 Biotechnology Industry Organization Innovation Zone held in Philadelphia, Pa. Vanapalli has completed research and product development in microfluidics and is an inventor with three pending patents, two of which have already been licensed to the startup company Neofluidics LLC. His areas of interest include microfluidics; fluid mechanics of drops; polymer solutions and cells; tumor cell mechanics and cancer diagnostics; devices for drug screening and devices for C. elegans biology, a primitive, freeliving nematode with essential biological characteristics similar to human biology.

BULLARD earned a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering in 1970 and is senior vice president of operations services for Pioneer Natural Resources. He is responsible for the operations of Pioneer Pumping Services, the company’s well stimulation fleet and for Premier Silica, Pioneer’s industrial sand mining operations. He also is responsible for the health, safety, environmental services and operations training departments.

He lives in Keller, Texas.

HANLEY earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1943 and left for basic training hours after graduation. Nine months later, he was commissioned a second lieutenant and attached to the 504th Bombardment Group (VH) as a B-29 flight engineer. In January 1945, the 504th began bombing missions over Japan based out of the Tinian Islands. On the seventh mission, his plane was shot down and he was captured by Japanese forces and held as a prisoner of war before being released six months later.

Upon returning to the United States, Hanley went to work for General Dynamics, working on the Saturn V Moon Rocket and the F-16 Fighting Falcon, and after 44 years with General Dynamics he retired in 1989.

Hanley, 95, resides in Fort Worth and is the author of “Accused American War Criminal,” a biography detailing his time as a prisoner of war.

HEITZMAN earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1972.

He is the founder, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Talos Energy LLC. Before starting Talos Energy, he was the president, chief executive officer and a founder of Phoenix Exploration Company LP. Prior to his time at Phoenix, he was a founder and vice president of operations at Gryphon Exploration. He has been married for 42 years to Andra Heitzman ’73, also a Texas Tech graduate. They live in Magnolia, Texas.

MCFARQUHAR earned three civil engineering degrees: a bachelor’s degree in 1984, his master’s degree in 1986 and his doctoral degree in 1989.

He has more than 26 years of experience in civil engineering and is the chief executive officer and president of his own engineering consulting firm, McFarquhar Group Inc. McFarquhar is engineer-ofrecord for cladding on several commercial projects within the U.S. and has performed engineering on several projects in the Far East and Central America.

He lives in Mesquite, Texas.

OELTJENBRUNS grew up in northwest Germany and while in college he participated in an undergraduate student exchange program with Texas Tech. He later returned to Lubbock where he earned a master’s degree in industrial engineering in 1993.

He has spent almost 25 years working for Daimler AG (Mercedes-Benz) in various leadership functions and locations, serving as part of the initial engineering team that set up the Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, Ala., the first outside of Germany. He is the new general manager for Daimler Trucks North America’s Freightliner Plant in Cleveland, N.C. WADE earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1983. She has worked in quality engineering and development with companies such as 3M and Mary Kay Cosmetics. Beginning in 2008, Wade began handling oversight of product quality for all Mary Kay products sold worldwide as the vice president for product quality. In this role, she oversees global quality for the company, managing product quality for multiple manufacturing sites and the distribution of effective skin care and color cosmetic products in 35 countries. She lives in Fort Worth, Texas.

TEXAS TECH’S USABILITY RESEARCH, WON THE 2015 PRESIDENT’S EXCELLENCE IN COMMERCIALIZATION AWARD. Still, associate professor of technical communication in the Texas Tech University Department of English, developed and brought to the market a mobile eye-tracking technology. Eyetracking technology allows for data collection, computer control for users with limited or no hand functionality and can even help diagnose concussions for athletes.

NOUREDDINE ABIDI , PH.D., A NATIONALLY-KNOWN RESEARCHER, TEXAS TECH’S DIRECTOR OF TECH’S FIBER AND BIOPOLYMER RESEARCH INSTITUTE AND ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR WITH TECH’S DEPARTMENT OF PLANT & SOIL SCIENCE, WAS AWARDED A FULBRIGHT GRANT. Abidi will travel to Belgium and play an active role in the training and education of students and engineers in the area of biopolymers and textile chemistry, surface modification and transformation of biopolymers to bioproducts.

NEWS RAWLS COLLEGE OF BUSINESS UNDERGRADUATE JOB PLACEMENT HAS REACHED AN ALL-TIME HIGH. Students who earned their diplomas in December 2014 achieved a 90.7 percent job placement rate. This is the highest in the college’s history. Graduate students earning degrees in December 2014 achieved a 93.6 percent job placement rate.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY RECEIVED A GIFT OF $7.5 MILLION FROM THE J. F MADDOX FOUNDATION MAY 14. The gift will support the research activities of the Jack Maddox and Donovan Maddox Distinguished Engineering Chairs and will be used by Tech to renovate the Engineering and Materials Research Center. Located on Memorial Circle at the entrance to the Engineering Key, the planned research facility will occupy the former Media & Communication building, which has been vacant since 2012 when the College of Media & Communication moved to its current location in the renovated former Rawls College of Business building. This center will be renamed Maddox Engineering Research Center. Located in Hobbs, N.M., the J. F Maddox Foundation’s primary commitment is to the development of grants benefiting residents of southeastern New Mexico with a history of supporting education and Texas Tech University.

THE COLLEGE OF VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS HAS CREATED A NEW DEGREE TRACK: INTERDISCIPLINARY DESIGN, ARTS & TECHNOLOGY. The degree falls under the bachelor of general studies and features specialized training in the arts with an orientation toward technology and design—the degree is designed for students preparing for a career combining such fields as art direction; game design; event design; interactive and convergent media; animation; app design; song writing; sound design for time-based media; and concept art. The degree is also appropriate for students wanting to produce technology-oriented work crossing boundaries between fine art and design or among theatre, music and visual arts.

SPRING 2015 COMMENCEMENT WAS HELD IN AT THE UNITED SUPERMARKETS ARENA MAY 15-16 WHERE 3,835 STUDENTS GRADUATED. Arcilia Acosta, a 1989 graduate with a degree in political science and founder, CEO and president of CARCON Industries and Construction, spoke at the commencement ceremonies May 15 and 16. Acosta is a member of the Texas Tech Alumni Association National Board of Directors. Irma Carrillo Ramirez, a U.S. magistrate judge for the Northern District of Texas, Dallas Division, spoke at the law hooding ceremony May 16. Also, on May 14, Texas Tech University’s Military and Veterans Programs honored graduating military service members and veterans with their official military stole during a ceremony held at the Helen DeVitt Jones Auditorium at the Museum of Texas Tech. Nearly 100 military students were presented with this honor.

THE TEXAS ALLIANCE FOR WATER CONSERVATION RECEIVED A TEXAS COMMISSION ON ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY “TEXAS ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE AWARD.” The TAWC is a collaborative research effort between producers, industries, universities and government agencies that spans eight Texas counties and is funded by the Texas Water Development Board—researchers at Texas Tech are part of the TAWC. The award was presented to recognize the effort to bring attention the most innovative and effective projects that strive to protect the state’s natural resources. The goal of the TAWC is to demonstrate to agricultural producers ways in which they can be more conservative with water usage, while at the same time maintaining economic viability. Since 2013, the TAWC has held field days, or series of meetings throughout the growing season, where growers can walk research plots, observe crops, discuss the plant’s current stage of growth and water demand. New technologies in water conservation are ongoing on the research plots, with results being shared at the field days. In addition, the TAWC uses its on-farm demonstrations of cropping and livestock systems to compare the production practices, technologies and systems that can maintain individual farm profitability while improving water use efficiency.

Dear Alumni of Texas Tech University, This summer, our third at Texas Tech University, has been wonderful. Ruthie and I had the pleasure of spending time with some of our alumni on the Alumni Association Mediterranean cruise in June. It provided us an opportunity to get to know many of our new friends in a relaxed and beautiful setting. We also visited some of the university’s Study Abroad students in Milan and at our campus in Seville, Spain. Hearing the joy and excitement in their voices as they told stories of their educational experiences in these international settings was truly fulfilling.

The summer months also have been filled with anticipation of the fall semester. As a university president, I always look forward to a full campus of students, faculty and staff and enjoy welcoming those who are new to Texas Tech University. We anticipate celebrating another record enrollment, based on the record number of applicants to the university and attendees at Red Raider Orientation, so there are many more reasons to be excited. This great university is growing in many positive ways, and we hope it boosts the pride you have for Texas Tech.

As we enter the new academic year, we are doing so with a reinforced focus on our priorities and initiatives. Texas Tech University is on the rise, and our peers continue to recognize us favorably. We’ve made great strides in recent years but have so much more to do.

Our research enterprise is expanding and the university’s faculty and staff have been diligent in their efforts to foster and promote our growth in this area. Recently, we cut the ribbon on the Texas Tech Innovation and Research Hub, a facility that will house industry and research partners and collaborators and provide faculty and student start-up companies a venue in which to encourage and explore business opportunities. Texas Tech is becoming an engaged and innovative national research university, and facilities like the Innovation and Research Hub will aid in our future elevation.

It bears repeating. You, our alumni, have played an invaluable role in our successes—and continue to do so. In the first two years of my presidency, I have met many of you and look forward to making other acquaintances in the new academic year. Whether at athletic or academic events or the next alumni gathering, I welcome the opportunity to visit.

Speaking of alumni gatherings, I will be attending four during the fall semester in Houston (Sept. 21), San Antonio (Sept. 28), Dallas (Oct. 19) and Austin (Nov. 2). I encourage you to attend. Texas Tech Alumni Association events are a great place to catch up with old friends, build relationships with new ones and support this wonderful organization. I appreciate the Alumni Association for the opportunity to speak at these events and visit with our alumni.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines the word “humanities” as “the branch of learning concerned with human culture; the academic subjects collectively comprising this branch of learning, as history, literature, ancient and modern languages, law, philosophy, art, and music.”

The new Texas Tech University Humanities Center invites participation from faculty members who share an interest in making the humanities more visible on campus and beyond.

The goal of the center is to promote both individual work and collaboration among scholars in the various humanities, as well as to foreground the importance of this area of academics.

Historically, the humanities have not received the visibility or financial support that technological fields such as engineering or agriculture do. One reason is humanities research is not as black and white as what the hard sciences produce. In addition, although most humanities fields do not require expensive technology or high-priced studies for their work, they still need funding to support travel and acquiring research materials.

The idea for the Texas Tech University Humanities Center came about in 2014 with the help of the provost .

“A few ‘squeaky wheel’ professors in the humanities caught the attention of Provost Schovanec, expressing concerns about a perceived lack of visibility and support, but it was his idea to translate their concerns into the creation of a humanities center the next year,” says Dorothy Chansky, Ph.D., associate professor of theatre and dance and director of the Humanities Center.

“Having a humanities center is an idea that has taken hold in research universities and top-tier liberal arts colleges across the nation, so we are right in step.”

Schovanec assembled a steering committee in Fall 2014 to draft a strategic plan. The committee eventually evolved into a board of 15 members.

The next step was selecting the inaugural class of Humanities Center Fellows. A call for proposals went out in January of this year to faculty members. After assessing the applications, the Humanities Center Board selected 12 recipients for the 2015 Humanities Center Fellowships.

“This year’s fellowships were not need-based; they were chosen based on merit,” Chansky says. “Nonetheless, it was clear from the proposals we received that winners would use the funds for everything from traveling to research sites, to eliminating the need to teach summer school for income, to purchasing materials, although the latter is less pressing in the humanities than it often is in the arts or even the social sciences.”

The recipients’ research is as varied as the researchers themselves. More than just focusing on individual projects and separate disciplines, each person sees his or her work as part of a larger entity. Cross-disciplinary and comparative research already are popular among members of the Humanities Center Board and the Fellows.

“I heard about the Humanities Center, and from the very beginning, I wanted to be part of it” says Andrew Gibb, Ph.D., assistant professor of Theatre and Dance. “I think what’s arising is a new promontory on the intellectual landscape of Tech.

I’m really grateful and humbled that I’m part of this inaugural group of Fellows because I wanted to be in on the ground floor.

“I’m a historian of the U.S. West, but I’m also a Performance Studies scholar, so I want to weave those two strands together in interdisciplinary fashion and hopefully, help us see our regional history in a new light.”

Allison Cattell, Ph.D., is an instructor of German in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures.

Her dissertation dealt with the representation of disabled characters in three plays from the early Weimar period. Her current

project, which the Humanities Center is funding, evolved from her earlier work with the literary portrayal of persons with disabilities during the Third Reich.

“I liked critical theory and was looking at pieces of German literature from the early 20th Century,” she says. “I noticed that there were a lot of disabled characters. Then I read a book by Carol Poor, ‘Disability in 20th Century German Culture.’ That’s what opened my eyes to this relatively new field of disability studies, not in the medical sense, but in the sense of the humanities and looking at representations.

“It’s great that a Humanities Center even exists. The humanities are in a tough spot these days. I think it’s very important to publicize them. I thought it was important for me to be involved in the center because it would give my department some visibility and say, ‘Hey, look at all the relevant work we’re doing here.’

“This differs from case to case and field to field, but in the humanities, we need to attend conferences and meet with people to get feedback.”

Among the many ideas for the future of the center are an integrated freshman humanities course team-taught by the best humanities professors; an annual lecture series; future funding for visiting scholars and post docs in the humanities; possibly, an interdisciplinary master’s degree in the humanities; competitive subvention awards; faculty reading groups; and, in the future, possible public humanities programs.

“Texas and the U.S West are on the brink of all kinds of dramatic and exciting changes—economic changes, demographic changes, political changes, environmental changes,” Gibb says. “All kinds of things are going to happen in this century; it’s going to radically reshape things for us here in Texas and the West.

“I think the humanities can play an important part in helping society decide where we’re going next and that institutions such as the Humanities Center will be places where those new ideas arise.”

BRIGHT SPOTS Physicists Nural Akchurin, Ph.D., a professor, and Sung-Won Lee, Ph.D., an associate professor, and the Texas Tech University High Energy Physics Group helped prove Higgs boson, a discovery that won the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2 European colleagues.

Chloe Honum, a doctoral candidate in the Department of English, has been awarded the 2015 Bob Bush Memorial Award for First Book of Poetry from the Texas Institute of Letters. Her book, “The Tulip-Flame” (Cleveland State University Poetry Center; 2014), contains several poems written while she was a student at Texas Tech and also won the 2013 Cleveland State University Poetry Center First Book Prize.

Kinesiologists Youngdeok Kim, Ph.D., and Masataka Umeda, Ph.D., both assistant professors, were awarded a $10,000 Paffenbarger-Blair Fund for Epidemiological Research on Physical Activity from the American College of Sports Medicine Foundation. The one-year project will examine the bidirectional associations of sleep health, physical activity and screen-based sedentary behaviors among young adolescents.

Genaro Pérez, Ph.D., professor of Spanish, and Jorge Zamora, Ph.D., associate professor of Spanish, led Texas Tech University’s Spanish Program in hosting the 2014 International Hispanic Crime Fiction Conference. The Conference was held at the National University of Mexico in Mexico City.

LAZARUS (Lab for the Analysis of Zombie Activity and Research into Undead Simulations) is the code name for Tech’s student-built supercomputer, branded as the Schoenberg Cluster. Led by mathematics doctoral candidate John Calhoun and overseen by mathematics professors Brock Williams and Jerry Dwyer, the lab is designed to support graduate and undergraduate research and serve as a point of outreach to K-12 students. The supercomputer is used to model the emergence and spread of deadly disease outbreaks, computer viruses, and, just for fun, zombie manifestations.

Saba Nafees, a Tech Mathematics alumna and graduate student in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, was selected to be an E3! Ambassador to the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (WHIAAPI). While Nafees was in Washington, she gave an on-camera interview to MSNBC’s José Díaz-Balart.

Atmospheric scientists at TTU’s National Wind Institute are taking part in a $2.5 million government research project to improve short-term wind forecasting capabilities in mountainous terrain.

Led by professor John Schroeder, Ph.D., and research professors Brian Hirth, Ph.D., and Jerry Guynes, Ph.D., the endeavor is part of the Wind Forecast Improvement Project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy to help enhance wind-energy creation. The team has also filed patents for a concept utilizing radar technology and analysis to better understand, and potentially optimize, how wind turbines interact with one another. Their concept was developed at TTU’s National Wind Institute.

Astronomer Alessandra Corsi, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Physics, received a five-year, $720,000 National Science Foundation CAREER grant to study the origins and reasons for gamma ray bursts. Corsi also was recognized as a distinguished top alumna of Italy’s University of Rome, where she earned her doctorate in astronomy.

Advanced materials scientist and professor Seshadri Ramkumar, Ph.D., received the 2014 Outstanding Merit Award from the Technical Association of Pulp & Paper Industry. Ramkumar’s lab has researched, developed and brought to market the technical fabric FiberTech®, a nonwoven decontamination wipe that can mop up industrial oil spills and nerve chemical surrogate.

David Ray, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, led a team of more than 50 scientists in mapping the genomes of three crocodilians: a crocodile, an alligator and a true gharial. Their research was funded in large part by the National Science Foundation and was published in the peer-reviewed journal Science (12/12/14).

Analytical chemist professor Yehia Mechref, Ph.D., received a $1.2 million grant from the Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) to study how breast cancer moves to the brain.

Climate Scientist Katharine Hayhoe, Ph.D., professor of political science and director of Texas Tech’s Climate Science Center, was named one of the world’s Top 100 Most Influential People 2014

by TIME magazine, and has garnered a growing list of other prestigious recognitions. In the classroom, Hayhoe recently guided a group of her graduate students in contributing an article about climate change to Good Housekeeping magazine’s April 2015 issue.

The piece was so widely read that President Barak Obama tweeted about it on April 17.

Astrophysicist and associate professor Tom Maccarone, Ph.D., was on team that discovered the brightest pulsar ever, an object “the size of a city that glows with the light intensity of ten million suns.”

As the son of an avid outdoorsman, Thomas Flemons ’00 quickly acquired a deep appreciation for the outdoors. By the age of six he had developed a love of hunting, fishing and canoeing. Lucky for him, he grew up in Dripping Springs, Texas, a region that easily accommodated that lifestyle—small creeks, large rivers and lakes surround the town. He knew the best fishing required some sort of boat, and when he was about 13, he became determined to purchase his own kayak because it was easier to operate than a canoe. By participating in shooting sport competitions, he was able to save enough prize money to eventually purchase his own boat. He jokes about having to hitch a ride with his mom any time he wanted to take his kayak out, which was often. “I spent time on the Pedernales River, Onion Creek, Cypress Creek, the Llano River, Lake Travis and other small ponds,” near his home, says Thomas. “I’d always rather be outside than inside.”

For Jay Korbell ’00, who grew up in Alamo Heights in the middle of San Antonio, it was exhilarating to escape the big city for his family’s riverfront fishing camp near Junction. Jay spent countless hours paddling the Llano River, which cuts through his family’s property that lies about 130 miles northwest of San Antonio. His dad favored canoes, and Jay became adept at operating them. Fishing was one of his favorite ways to spend his free time, and it still is today. But aside from fishing, any time and any place he could, Jay took the opportunity to be outside, whether for hunting, fishing, paddling or just unwinding. He even had a hunter themed groom’s cake complete with spent shotgun shells scattered along its multi-tiers. “As much as I love San Antonio, being away from the big city and heading to wide open spaces, particularly at my family’s place, has always been a way to regroup for me,” says Jay. “Hunting, fishing or just having a little time to kick back on the river has always kept me balanced and will always be a huge part of my life and lifestyle.”

devil M ADE ME DO IT

Both men chose to attend Tech and ended up pledging the same fraternity: Sigma Alpha Epsilon, or SAE. The pledge brothers became fast friends, spending free weekends fishing the rivers and lakes of Texas with other friends from Tech. On one of these trips, Thomas introduced Jay to kayaking via the Ocean kayak he’d owned since he was 13. Jay became hooked. After that, a trip wasn’t complete without the chance to get out, paddle and cast a few lines.

One of the groups’ favorite rivers to fish was the Devils River, near Loma Alta and Rock Springs, Texas. The Devils is one of the most ecologically sound rivers in Texas because there are very few public access locations, so, consequently, public traffic, and the pollution that comes with it, has been extremely low. There is Del Norte, a 37,000-acre park on the Devils that is part of the Texas Parks & Wildlife system as well as a 17,000-acre state park called Big Satan, which isn’t yet open to the public. But most of the river flows through private property. What makes the Devils stand out from other rivers is that it runs through a region where the Edwards Plateau, the Chihuahuan Desert and the Tamaulipan Scrub overlap. It’s also challenging to navigate via kayak or canoe; it’s not for beginners. The water is so pure it’s as clear as glass, and the fish are plentiful.

Jay, Thomas and their friends caught countless largemouth and smallmouth bass on their excursions to the Devils River.

Post-college, both men pursued other careers. Jay worked in sales while Thomas bounced back and forth between Central America and Texas for a number of years: backpacking in Costa Rica, assisting in the opening of a retail outdoor store in San Antonio and guiding bird hunts in Honduras. Thomas landed in Austin, Texas, where he had accepted a position as a loan officer for a mortgage brokerage. Jay was living in San Antonio. The two still spent as much time as possible outdoors, and one weekend

in 2008, after a long day hunting at Jay’s family ranch, the two were sitting around a campfire discussing a golden idea Thomas had: design a new kind of kayak.

They decided to go for it. They’d call their company Diablo Paddlesports, a nod to their favorite fishing spot—diablo means “devil” in Spanish.

Like many of the world’s most ingenious business ideas, theirs began with sketches Thomas had drawn in a notebook. They took their determination and the notebook, refined their ideas, and came up with an altogether new spin on how to design a superior kayak.

“We jumped in with both feet,” Thomas remarks about the decision to start Diablo.

Jay and Thomas were confident about their decision to launch a kayak business, and Thomas remarks, “The fastest growing segment of the fishing market is kayak fishing.”

PADDLE SPORTS

When it comes to paddle sports, participants have a number of options: canoe; kayak; raft or paddleboard, which can be a kneeling variety or standing variety. For the uninitiated, there probably doesn’t seem to be a lot of difference between canoes and kayaks (I can hear the distant squawking of paddle sport enthusiasts, but bear with me). I’ll go a step further and say, for the uninitiated, there’s not a lot of difference between kayaks, regardless of the brand.

But, I have to stop there, because there is a huge difference between Diablo Paddlesports kayaks and every other kayak on the market. Here’s a brief explanation: Canoes are an open boat with a scooped out design, a v-shaped hull and high sides. Canoes can seat a number of people, depending on the length of the boat—there are canoes used for racing or expeditions that are 20 feet long and greater, but more commonly they’re around 16 or 17 feet. Because of their size, it’s difficult, if not impossible, to guide them into tight spots passengers might want to explore.

Most kayaks have a “cockpit” where the traveler/captain inserts himself or herself. Kayaks can be single-rider or double-rider crafts. They’re usually eight to 16 feet. They’re great for independent operation and can be moved into tight spaces in waterways. They’re also perfect for solitary travel and enthusiasts use an oar with paddles on both ends for simpler movement.

Then there’s the stand-up paddleboard, which is a flat board that’s similar to a surfboard, just of a sturdier design. These are created so that the passenger can stand and paddle.

Thomas and Jay, with their decades of experience on paddle crafts, decided the best kayak would be a hybrid between the paddle board and a kayak, they coined the term SUP-Yak, which stands for stand up paddle (SUP) and kayak (Yak).

They worked with Tim Niemeyer, the founder of Ocean Kayaks and owner of Wild Design in Bellingham, Washington, to bring their dreams to life. Tim is famous among kayakers for his skill in designing and knowledge of kayaks.

“Tim has a full-on concept shop,” says Thomas, who, along with Jay, traveled to Bellingham to work directly with Niemeyer. “It is amazing. He had all the tools necessary to complete our concept, one of which was a 16-foot CNC machine that cut out the molds of our kayak.”

Once the prototypes were complete, the two began “testing” their first kayaks.

“We took the kayaks across the state trying them out,” comments Thomas, who notes that since their SUP-Yak was a brand-new concept, they needed to be sure the boats were up to their elevated standards.

Today they have three designs: The Amigo, The Adios and The Chupacabra, named after a mythical creature in Mexico, which translates to “goat sucker.” A Chupacabra is a fearful beast that’s a staple in children’s ghost stories as well as the folklore of Mexico, Puerto Rico and the American Southwest.

Each Diablo kayak has different features, but some of what they have in common is unsurpassed comfort, a wide design that allows for stable stand-up paddling, and areas for dry storage, wet storage, paddle storage and drink holders. Everything a paddler could need for an excursion can be stored on a Diablo SUP-Yak. The kayaks are made in the U.S.A., with two of them—the Adios and Chupacabra—being made in Texas. The Adios, at 69 pounds, and the Chupacabra, at 56 pounds, are made from Thermoformed ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) which makes them sturdy and light. The Amigo, which weighs 77 pounds, differs from the other two in that it’s a roto-molded boat. On the underside of any Diablo kayak you can easily spot the pontoons on each side, as well as the full-length keel on the bottom of the boat, which is what makes the boat a tri-hull design. The kayaks can maneuver on shallow water, Thomas notes the Adios and Amigo draft three-and-ahalf inches with 275 pounds in them. All three designs are superior for exploring, whether in the ocean, on a river, pond or lake.

In addition to recreational kayaking, these are, of course, designed for fishing. But they’re also used for duck hunting and alligator hunting, both of which require a swift boat that can squeeze into small spaces.

Born and made in the USA, the distinctive kayaks produced by these Red Raiders have altered the paddle sports market.

Kayaks can be used with two kinds of paddles: asymmetric and symmetric. Symmetric paddles are symmetric at both ends and can be used to paddle on both sides of the kayak. Asymmetric paddles are generally used for racing with one side having a curve.

Both Thomas and Jay are married to Red Raiders. Thomas’s wife is Megan Mandigo Flemons ’01, and Jay’s wife is Ashley Eversburg Korbell ’00.

Megan, Ashley and Jay all attended the same schools in Alamo Heights, and the three were well acquainted while growing up. While at Tech, both Ashley and Megan pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma—or Kappa.

Megan’s older brother Clark Mandigo was an SAE with Thomas and Jay. When Clark graduated in 1997, he asked Thomas, who had become acquainted with Megan prior to her enrolling at Tech, to make sure his younger sister settled in to college life. Megan and Thomas maintained their friendship throughout their time at Tech. After leaving Tech, Megan moved to Chicago where she worked for Wells Fargo in wholesale lending.

In 2007, still working in wholesale lending, she returned to Austin, where Thomas was also living, and the two began dating.

When Thomas and Jay officially launched Diablo Paddlesports in 2009, Megan was right there with them. In 2010 she quit her job to join the company.

Megan, who was a Spanish major at Tech, says at one time she thought she’d use her Spanish skills as a translator in the lending industry.

“But, then I ended up moving to Chicago at Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, and they never had a use for my Spanish skills,” Megan says. “So, here we are in the kayak industry, and now my Spanish-speaking skills are a little rusty. That being said, I wouldn’t trade my job, or my life, for anything else. If someone had told me in college what I would be doing now, I would have laughed and called them crazy.”

The Amigo (in “Lubbock Camo,” pictured) is a hybrid sup-yak with a tri-hull design that makes it extremely stable. The seat or “Larry Chair” is elevated for comfort and is designed to fold down small enough to fit in the front hatch for storage or transportation. The drop down skeg in the rear of the boat can be deployed to help this 12’ 8” kayak paddle more efficiently in windier conditions. There are five carry handles throughout the deck to help transport to and from the water. The open flat cockpit allows paddlers to move around freely without fear of tripping or getting snagged on unnecessary equipment. Adjustable foot braces are located at the front of both sides of the cockpit. Between the foot braces is a pull up strap designed to help paddlers stand or sit with ease. On the front deck of the kayak is a storage hatch that accesses the inside of the hull and can be used as a second seat position for an additional passenger. On both sides of the kayak are bungee paddle keepers that allow paddlers to attach paddles, rods and other gear out of the way. There are molded in cup holders located on both sides of the seat that accommodate any size beverage container. Small hatch covers can be added where the recessed round areas behind the seat are located for additional storage. At the rear of the Amigo is a tank well that is equipped with removable bungee to hold coolers or gear bags. The entire kayak has an open flat deck that allows for any accessories to be mounted wherever the paddler desires.

Both men agree that bringing Megan on board was a stellar decision. Two years after Diablo opened, in October 2011, Megan and Thomas married—Thomas paddled a Diablo kayak, while also wearing a tuxedo, to the riverbank where they had their ceremony.

“I call her patrona, which means “boss lady” in Spanish,” jokes Thomas. “But she handles a lot of our business. She handles all of our marketing, creates our ads, does our accounting, she’s our I.T. department and is our company photographer.”

Jay continued living in San Antonio while the three established Diablo. But, after five years in south Austin, Megan and Thomas tired of the crowds and opted to move out of the city.

“When we started Diablo in Austin, we could get from our house to the warehouse in about 10 minutes,” says Megan. “Five years later, it took almost a half hour because of all the traffic.”

They settled on a warehouse location in tiny Martindale, just south of San Marcos, and moved in early 2014. The location is per-

fect for Thomas and Megan, whose house is on the banks of the San Marcos River, which allows ample time for Thomas and Jay, who still lives in San Antonio, to fish whenever the mood strikes.

Jay, Thomas and Megan spend a good portion of their summer on the road, traveling to trade shows to promote their kayaks.

“When it’s too hot to be out kayaking and fishing, we’re on the road,” comments Jay.

Jay, Thomas and Megan have enjoyed watching Diablo Paddlesports grow from a dream to reality, with retailers all over the United States carrying their kayaks. Between Jay and Thomas, their lifetime of experience with canoes and kayaks and fishing and hunting, they created the perfect kayak. And the three of them run their business like a well-oiled machine. And though their hard work built Diablo, they give some credit to Texas Tech.

“If it weren’t for Tech, none of this would have happened,” says Thomas.

That’s true. Thomas and Jay would never have met and forged a friendship and decided to build the perfect kayak. So, when it came time to select company colors, they showed their true colors by selecting red and black. Also, one of their signature kayak colors is “Lubbock Camo,” a blend of red, black and sand.

But regardless of the color or the model of a Diablo kayak, one thing is for sure, you’ll have a devil of a time not having fun in one.

Farewell After 42 Years Peggy Pearce retires from the Texas Tech Alumni Association.

When Peggy Pearce applied for the position of secretary to the executive director of the then-Texas Tech Ex-Students Association, she surely couldn’t have imagined that she would work for the organization for 42 years.

After attending Texas Tech for a couple of years, where she played flute in the marching band, she transferred to West Texas State University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English. She worked for the Amarillo Board of City Development for a time after college.

Then she met Bob Pearce through church in Amarillo. They dated, married and relocated to Lubbock.

“After we were in Lubbock for a while, I decided to apply for a job at the Texas Tech Ex-Students Association” Pearce says. “I remember thinking, when I applied for the job, ‘I hope it’s an interesting job and that there’s a lot to do.’

“I had no idea that such a long, rewarding career was in my future. I was just glad to be part of the team—a small part of what would become an operation with so many cutting-edge moving parts.”

The man who hired Pearce was Ex-Students Association Executive Director Wayne James. He proved not only to be a great boss, but also a great mentor for her.

“Peggy Pearce was an answer to my prayers to find someone with good organizational skills who could keep several ‘balls in the air’ at a time, could meet people and make them feel at ease when visiting the associa-

tion headquarters or attending some function there,” James says. “In the interview I had with her, she presented herself very professional, and I got the feeling she loved Texas Tech and was a ‘people’ type person.

“She had a special talent to bring numerous individuals together in a common cause, whether it be students working on Homecoming, exes preparing for a class reunion of some other activity. When given a task, she did not need additional guidance and I could expect it would be completed and done right. He attention to detail is one of her greatest assets.”

To this day, Pearce and James remain friends and stay in touch.

“Wayne hired me as his secretary and taught me basics of the job that I used throughout my career,” she says. “He taught me how to write event scripts and award citations. He also showed me, by example, how to take good care of board members, alumni needs and so much more.

“If Wayne hadn’t taken a chance on me when I was such a young woman, just starting out in the work world, I wouldn’t have ended up where I did. His faith in me helped me get this far in my career.”

In 1978, the association hired Bill Dean, Ed.D., as executive director. Pearce served as his assistant. In addition, she served as a liaison to the association board and began directing special events for the association.

“I also learned a great deal from Bill Dean,” she says. “During the many years we worked together, he and I saw many changes take place at the association, everything from technology that evolved and changed how we did things to the size and role of our board. Through it all, I have to say Bill looks at the big picture and analyzes situations well. He is very organized.”

Pearce has earned a stellar reputation for putting on top-notch awards dinners, such as the Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner and A Matador Evening.

Guests look forward to the detailed video presentations of honorees’ lives that Pearce puts together for the Distinguished Alumni dinner.

In fact, Pearce says that some of her most rewarding work has been writing scripts for the videos shown at the Distinguished Alumni Dinner. Working with the honorees and gathering photos and other materials from them allowed her to get to know them well.

“I would get the biographical information written, then the fun would begin—searching for meaningful, sometimes surprise nuggets of information,” she recalls. “One of my favorites was locating an archive in Los Angeles to provide a clip of Choc Hutcheson’s appearance on the TV show ‘I’ve Got a Secret,” which he had never seen.”

“When I recall the first DA dinner I attended in the ballroom of the Student Union in 1978 and think about where we are today, I realize we have come light years since then, thanks to Peggy,” Dean says. “Back in the day, we would read the citation and then ask a close friend to make remarks. Normally, the friend would go back over the ground we had already covered in the citation and then go entirely too long with personal remarks.

“Plus the chairs squeaked.”

Well, Pearce took care of those squeaky chairs and added her creative and thoughtful touch to every event she planned. From the food to the flowers to how people were seated, she made sure that everything was as perfect as it could be. She wanted the honorees and attendees to be comfortable and happy.

Other special events under her purview included class reunions and the Top Techsan Luncheon, at which four outstanding Texas Tech University employees are honored during Homecoming Weekend.

During the Faculty Convocation each spring, Pearce organized the New Faculty Awards the association presented to one faculty member from each academic college. She also oversaw the presentation of awards to top graduates for each class.

Pearce has made a huge impact on many people through her work and her selfless manner. Former board president Larry Byrd of Dallas, a retired engineer and former president of All Plastics Molding, sums it up with his assessment.

“Peggy was always ready to share her many talents and experiences with those of us who were performing leadership role activities for the first time,” he says. “She never seemed to be working as a ‘show-off’ for praise. She was very unselfish in sharing her experience with those of us who were novices.

“She seemed tireless in leading and guiding us to perform our elected jobs to the best of our collective ability. I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that her workload was filled with numerous ‘mostly peaks and very few valleys,’ but she never complained.

“She has served as a mentor and adviser to many association staff members and other people on campus. Her work speaks for itself,” said Bill Dean.

“I never in all of our years of association and friendship ever heard her say anything negative about anyone. There just had to have been times when our lack of personal planning doubled her workload, but she never so stated or complained.”

Being helpful is a hallmark of Pearce’s personality and ethic. She cares about people and goes the extra mile for them.

“I always liked a challenge, whether it was to help resolve a question from someone on campus, within the staff or from an alumnus, to assist with a late request for a hotel room or relieve anxiety by taking a last-minute reservation for an event because a guest thought it was covered.

“Each time I felt I had made a difference, a blessing was received.”

That attitude carried over into Pearce’s personal life. In addition to having so many responsibilities at work, Pearce was dedicated to her family.

She and Bob’s daughter, Ashley, was born and grew up during Pearce’s tenure at the association. In fact, Ashley went on to marry Grant Looney and have her own daughter, Brooklyn, born in 2012.

Being a working mom wasn’t always easy for Pearce, but she made the most of it with the help of Bob and his supportive attitude.

People who work with Pearce share the opinion about her dedication.

“She has been a constant support for me and many others on our staff during that time,” Dean says. “She has served as a mentor and adviser to many association staff members and other people on campus. Her work speaks for itself.”

Another large role for Pearce was serving as secretary to the national board, which is “no small task,” as Dean puts it.

Her job was much like solving a big puzzle that included planning full board meetings three times each year, helping put together the agenda, making sure rooms were set and equipped and ensuring that hotels rooms were available. She also coordinated the time and location of committee meetings. Then, of course, she communicated regularly with the board.

“I clearly remember when I first met Peggy,” says Steve Souter ‘71, an architect and managing partner with Marmon Mok in San Antonio. “I was a new Alumni Association board member and showed up for my very first meeting. I didn’t know many people—didn’t really know what to do. Admittedly, I was a little lost.

“Peggy came to my rescue. She introduced me to the staff and other board members and briefed me on the meeting schedule and what we were supposed to do. Her welcoming attitude, enthusiasm and instant friendship was a tremendous introduction—and quite honestly, initiated a bond to the Alumni Association and friendship with Peggy that carried me through my nine-year tenure on the board and will always be part of my life. Over the years, I have watched Peggy help so many ‘rookies’ as they began their work on the board.

“Peggy became my source of information, history, protocol during my time on the board. When I became president-elect and president, she was a “trusted adviser” and helped me in so many ways during that year. Quite

honestly, any success I had during that time—I owe major thanks to Peggy for her guidance and support.”

Pearce’s longtime friend and former board president Diane King Scovell ‘68 from Dallas echoes Souter’s comments.

“Peggy is the most patient and kind and thoughtful person,” Scovell says. “I have known her since we were in college in the band. She is so detailed about everything she’s ever done. She’s always been so dependable.

“She’s just such a sweetheart. I don’t know any person who thinks Peggy Pearce isn’t the nicest person ever. For her to have all the responsibility she’s had and to have done such a wonderful job always.

That’s hard to do, especially with something like the Alumni Association, where you’re trying to please so many people.

“The year I was president of the Texas Tech Alumni Association Board, she and I both had a lot going on in our lives. Many times that year. I was so frantic, and she was so calm. She always took the load off of me and carried a big load herself.”

Although Pearce didn’t know what to expect all those years ago when she filled out that job application, it became clear that she had found a position that was right for her.

Of course, there’s no doubt that she was the perfect fit for the Texas Tech Alumni Association.

“I have been blessed to work with an amazing group of people who pulled together as a team,” she says. “I hope to ‘give back’ to my family whose sacrifice and support allowed me to have this memorable experience.”

Spoken like someone with a true servant’s heart.

Grapes, Wine and TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY

Texas Tech University is the only university in Texas that offers viticulture and enology programs.

In the last 10 years, the Texas wine industry has exploded. The enormous growth in winemaking—enology—and grape growing—viticulture—has resulted in the creation of about 300 wineries and 500 vineyards statewide. Much of the state’s wine grape crop is grown in the western part of Texas, particularly the High Plains area. The climate out here mimics that of California’s wine country, arid and sunny with cool evenings, which makes for happy grapes. But, Texans are growing grapes all around the state.

Although grapes have been grown on the High Plains of West Texas since the mid-1970s, the acres of grape production in West Texas began to rise in the past decade and there are now roughly 3,000 acres of vineyards. Also in the past decade, the Texas Hill Country around Fredericksburg began to see a booming wine industry emerge. It seems you can’t drive more than a mile in Gillespie County without encountering a winery or a sign offering directions to a winery.

With the rapid growth of the Texas wine industry and the opening of the Texas Tech University branch in Fredericksburg in 2004, Ed Hellman, Ph.D., professor of viticulture in the Department of Plant & Soil Science in the College of Agricultural and Natural Resources, saw an opportunity to add viticulture and enology programs to Texas Tech’s offerings.

“I came to Lubbock in December of 2000,” says Hellman, who holds a bachelor’s and master’s in horticulture and a doctorate in plant science. “Then the state had about 46 wineries. In 2004 and 2005, state laws began to change that improved the business climate and encouraged more wineries to open.”

Starting in 2007, Hellman began creating opportunities within viticulture and enology education at Texas Tech with the Viticulture Certificate Program, an outreach education opportunity for the wine industry. In 2009, degree specializations were created related to the state’s growing wine business and in 2014 the Winemaking Certificate—also an outreach education opportunity for the wine industry—was established.

Since launching the viticulture and enology specialization in 2009, Texas Tech remains the only university in Texas offering a bachelor of science in plant and soil science with a specialization in viticulture and enology. Post-graduate studies are also offered including masters and doctoral degrees in plant and soil science with specializations in viticulture (see sidebar on page 34). Hellman notes that the demand for his graduates is high—there are many more jobs available than there are graduates to fill those jobs.

The program’s first graduate is Grayson Davies, who received his bachelor’s in December 2011. Davies is the winemaker at his family’s winery, Arché, in Saint

“Arché is a family owned and operated vineyard and winery,” says Davies of Arché, which produces about 1000 cases of wine a year. “My parents started the vineyard in 1999 and opened the winery in 2007. The 2010 vintage was the first year I began to make wine.”

Davies learned about the Department of Plant & Soil Science’s viticulture and enology specialization bachelor’s degree from Hellman, who had attended Davies Grape Days, an educational event sponsored by the Davies family, with seminars and speakers for those involved in the wine industry.

Davies knew the program at Texas Tech would prepare him to return to the family business.

“It was an intense degree and a lot was packed into the program, I basically ended up with a minor in chemistry once I’d completed all my coursework related to winemaking,” notes Davies. “I received an amazing education at Texas Tech.”

Faculty members involved in the program also conduct research, which keeps faculty and students on the cutting edge of the wine industry. Thayne Montague, Ph.D., an associate professor of horticulture in the Department of Plant & Soil Science, teaches viticulture courses and conducts viticulturerelated research in collaboration with Hellman. The Texas Agrilife Research & Experiment Center in Lubbock, with which Montague has a joint appointment, has a research vineyard where numerous varieties of wine grapes are grown.

“My background and training is in woody plant physiology, working particularly with ornamental trees and shrubs and with landscape water issues,” explains Montague. “However, several years ago the opportunity came up to work with Texas AgriLife Research, specifically with viticulture research. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to conduct research in Lubbock—where we have a research vineyard—and in the vicinity of Lubbock on private vineyards. We focus our research on variety adaptation to the climate and soils in West Texas, rootstock interactions with various varieties and vine physiology—things like water use and photosynthesis. We have also worked with some disease issues, such as Pierce’s Disease (a bacteria that kills grapevines and which has been a problem for Texas growers, particularly along the Gulf Coast) and temperature and light influences on fruit quality.”

Montague notes that with the passing and signing of Senate Bill 880—which allows for creation of committees and programs to develop the wine industry through education, research and marketing efforts in Texas through the Department of Agriculture—and Senate Bill 881—which relates to the dedication of certain wine-related revenue to Texas Tech’s viticulture program and the Texas Wine Marketing Research Institute at Texas Tech—there will now be opportunities to conduct additional viticulture and enology research at Texas Tech. In addition to his research, he teaches an introduction to viticulture course that is taught live every odd Fall year—he’s teaching the course this Fall. The same course is taught via distance and online every even Fall year— the next course will be Fall 2016.

“My association with viticulture has been a great blessing,” says Montague. “There’s much to learn, but it’s all very interesting. Because of the great increase of viticulture acreage in West Texas, we hope to have a program that can help solve grower problems and train folks as they enter into this exciting opportunity.”

The College of Human Sciences plays a role in Texas Tech’ viticulture and enology degree specializations. The college houses the Texas Tech Wine Marketing Institute, which provides education to those interested in the wine and grape industry.

The College of Human Sciences also offers two undergraduate courses related to wine: one on wine marketing and the other on tourism. They also offer one graduate class that combines the topics of wine marketing and tourism.

Enrollment in the viticulture and enology specialization has been slowly and steadily increasing, and Hellman plans to add faculty soon to meet the growing demands.

“There are great scholarships and internships available to these students,” says Hellman. “We are looking to expand the curriculum and working on two potential study abroad programs.”

BEYOND THE UNIVERSITY: TEXAS TECH’S OUTREACH OFFERINGS The flourishing wine industry in Texas has created a need for education resources for vineyard owners and wine makers alike. Hellman created two separate certifications, one for viticulture and one for winemaking (enology), for those who wish to enrich their knowledge of the wine industry without having to return to college. These are catered to people who are interested in starting a wine/grape-based business or who already have one.

The Viticulture Certificate Program, which started in 2007 and is headed by Kirk Williams, is a two-year cohort, which means he has a class of students that starts and completes the certification program together. He starts a new two-year cohort every year. In addition to his teaching duties at Texas Tech, Williams has his own vineyard in Plains, Texas, where he grew up. He received his bachelor’s from Tech in agronomy in 1986 and a master’s in agronomy in 1988 from Oklahoma State University.

Williams teaches Viticulture Certificate Program classes at a distance and also requires students to attend field days as a group where they visit vineyards in different areas of the state. He planted the teaching vineyard in Fredericksburg at the Hill Country University Center, which includes the following varieties: Aglianico, a red grape from Southern Italy, Sicily; and Marsanne and Rousanne, white grapes from Southern France.

Williams teaches all aspects of grape production, from planting, to pest and disease control to harvest as well as which varieties are suited to Texas’ various climates.

“Generally speaking, Texas is now planting more grape varieties that are considered warm-climate varieties, generally from Spain, Italy or the South of France, which is the warmer part of France,” says Williams. “These include white grapes such as Viogner, Rousanne, Muscat Canelli, Vermentino; and red grapes like Tempranillo, Syrah,

Fredericksburg, Texas, is wildly popular for good reason.

It’s gorgeous, boasting green hills scattered generously with live oaks, cedars and mesquites. The town proper offers street after street of historic German architecture, each solid limestone home or business was richly constructed using old-world craftsmanship. Celebrated for producing some of the nation’s sweetest peaches, Gillespie County is home to more than 2,000 acres of well-maintained peach orchards, There’s Luckenbach, the rural music venue first made famous by the 1977 song “Luckenbach, Texas, (Basics of Love),” sung by West Texas native Waylon Jennings. Then there’s the shopping. Main Street offers blocks and blocks of shops. The town is a beehive of activity, slowing slightly during the first few days of the week, then rocketing again by Thursdays.

In 2004, Texas Tech University added its name to the town when it began offering instruction for a variety of degrees.

Initially there wasn’t a dedicated building, and Tech used donated space where they could find it. In 2010 the Hill Country University Center, or HCUC, was completed—it’s a 24,000 square foot structure owned by Texas Hill Country University Center Foundation (UCF). The building, constructed at a cost of $5.5 million, includes six state-of-the-art classrooms, the H-E-B Community Events Center, a science wing and lab, a computer laboratory, a student lounge and a conference room. The HCUC, situated east of town on Highway 290, was built on 68 acres leased from the City of Fredericksburg. Tech shares the space with Central Texas College.

Texas Tech supports a vast array of online degrees offered by the university, both undergraduate and graduate, as well as several areas of concentration. The Viticulture Certificate Program has had 64 graduates.

Currently there are 69 students enrolled in the two ongoing cohorts.

Maureen Qualia heads the Winemaking Certificate Program and lives in Fredericksburg where she offices out of the Hill Country University Center building. She received a master’s degree from Fresno State University’s wine program and spent eight years working in the California wine industry. She grew up learning about the wine industry because her family owns Val Verde Winery in Del Rio, Texas, which was established in 1883 and is the state’s oldest continuously running winery.

“I teach the wine production courses for both our certificate program and the undergraduate specialization in viticulture and enology,” she says. “The hands-on portions of my classes include home winemaking projects for the certificate students and winery facility tours for both groups. Wine analysis and sensory evaluation are both taught face-to-face and are handson as well.”

Qualia makes use of the laboratory at the Hill Country University Center for her analysis and sensory classes. The Winemaking Certificate Program differs slightly from the

Viticulture Certificate Program because her students aren’t in a cohort and can start the program at any time, and consequently don’t graduate in one single group. Most of her students are from Texas, but she currently has one who lives in Belgium and who discovered her Winemaking Certificate Program online.

The first class for the winemaking program was in the spring of 2014, and thus far more than 50 people have enrolled in Qualia’s Winemaking Certificate Program. The first group will graduate with winemaking certifications this fall.

The value of the Viticulture Certificate Program and the Winemaking Certificate Program is the intensive and hands-on nature. The focus is very specific and strictly related to the wine industry. Students graduate from the certification programs with the knowledge required to start or grow their businesses.

Texas Tech is breaking new ground through wine-related research and education. As the only university in Texas with degrees and certifications dedicated to the wine industry, Texas Tech is making its mark on the wine industry in Texas and beyond.

National College Baseball Hall of Fame Celebrates Newest Members

Night of Champions features Class of 2015 induction C O L L E GE BA S E BA L L’ S BE S T from across the country gathered June 29 in Lubbock for the fifth annual Night of Champions to honor the eight newest inductees to the National College Baseball Hall of Fame.

The College Baseball Night of Champions is an annual event in which the Hall of Fame inductions and college baseball awards are presented, including the Brooks Wallace Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top shortstop. Named after the late Texas Tech shortstop and assistant coach, the award has been presented since 2004. The national champions and top achievements are recognized in a single event.

The 2015 induction class included Miami-Dade North Community College and Arizona State pitcher Joe Arnold; Arizona State outfielder Mike Kelly; Rice first baseman and outfielder Lance Berkman; Lubbock Christian and Texas Tech coach Larry Hays; North Carolina A&T pitcher Al Holland; Eastern Connecticut State coach Bill Holowaty; Wisconsin outfielder Rick Reichardt; and St. John’s pitcher Frank Viola.

Hays, another standout coach, spent time at both Lubbock Christian and Texas Tech while compiling 1,508 career wins and appeared in nine NCAA tournaments and was named conference coach of the year nine times.

“To get to coach at Texas Tech and Lubbock Christian,” he said, “who wouldn’t be blessed to get to do that? I’m so thankful for that, and I want to thank those two universities for that opportunity. I want to thank my wife, Nell, for putting up with that all these years.”

In 2009, college baseball in the United States celebrated its 150th anniversary. Until recently, there was not a national entity in place to honor and showcase the game’s rich past and to annually celebrate current collegiate baseball achievements.

The College Baseball Foundation, an established 501(c)(3), was created to become the founder of the National College Baseball Museum and Hall of Fame to distinguish this important and ongoing history.

Men’s Tennis Coach Tim Siegel Retires After 23 Seasons Head Men’s Tennis Coach Tim Siegel is retiring after 23 seasons. Until his replacement is found, Assistant Coach James Wilson has been appointed the interim head.

“This decision will allow me to spend more time with my family,” Siegel said in a statement. “I look forward to pursuing coaching and teaching here in Lubbock. These past 23 years have been incredible.

I want to thank all of my former and current players, and all of the great people I have worked with at Tech. I love Texas Tech with all my heart, and will continue to be the biggest supporter of this great University. Guns up!”

“We appreciate Tim’s years of service at Texas Tech,” Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. “He leaves behind a successful program that earned two consecutive NCAA Championship berths, along with nine NCAA appearances in the previous 11 years.”

Over his 23-year tenure as Texas Tech’s head men’s tennis coach, Siegel guided the Red Raiders to 12 total NCAA Championship appearances and a 330-244 overall dual meet record.

Functioning since the founding of Tech, the Student Council is composed of student representatives from all departments of school.

The purpose of the Student Council is to provide leadership for the student body, and to present the student’s viewpoints in problems with the administration.

Under the competent leadership of Leon Ince, the Student Council has accomplished much. They helped finance the trip of the band to California, bought ballot boxes for student elections, and arranged for the sale of activity tickets. The council helped with the Junior Prom, Hodge Podge, Fish Dance, and completely revised the student constitution.

Zoology) Fredericksburg, Texas, wrote a book and published it with the Texas Tech University press: “Carrying the Black Bag.” The book is part memoir and part homage to his patients who faced major illness with grace, grit and dignity. He practiced medicine in West Texas and Minnesota for more than 30 years. The physician and neurologist discovered that a doctor’s best teachers are often his patients. Through real-life patient narratives, Hutton shines light on ordinary people facing extraordinary challenges. Tom is an internationally recognized clinical and research neurologist and educator. He is past president of the Texas Neurological Society and served as professor and vice chairman of the Department of Medical and Surgicl Neurology at the Texas Tech School of Medicine. He now ranches near Fredericksburg, Texas.

Education, M.Ed. ’69 Education) Belton, Texas, was president of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor from 1991 to 2009.

The new 110,000-square-foot student union building at the university was dedicated and will be named the Dr. Jerry and Vicky Bawcom Student Union in October 2014. Jerry was a Saddle Tramp and SGA representative while at Tech, and his wife, VICKY KEENE BAWCOM ’67, was a twirler in the Goin’ Band from Raiderland.

The identical twin brothers, also Eagle Scouts, recently received the BSA Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to youth. Both are Distinguished Alumni of Texas Tech University College of Architecture and are the only twin Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. Terrance owns a firm in Corrales, New Mexico, and Morris is a professor of Architecture at Texas Tech University—El Paso. Terrance’s wife is Sandra, and Morris’s wife is Sonia.

DAVID M. BLANCHETT , a doctoral student in Texas Tech University’s Department of

Personal Financial Planning, received a national award from the Financial Planning Association (FPA) for the second consecutive year.

He won the 2015 Montgomery-Warschauer Award for his May 2014 Journal of Financial Planning article “Exploring the Retirement Consumption Puzzle.” He and faculty adviser Michael Finke, a personal financial planning professor, were co-winners of the award in 2014.

Blanchett, a certified financial planner and chartered financial analyst, earned his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business prior to coming to Texas Tech.

Association for Women in Science has selected MATT VANLANDEGHEM as the recipient of its annual Champion of Women and Outstanding Woman Leader award and NICTÉ ORDÓÑEZ-GARZA as recipient of the Champion of Women Award.

Vanlandeghem is a post-doctoral research associate in Texas Tech University’s Natural Resources Management. Ordóñez-Garza is a doctoral candidate in zoology and a research assistant in the Texas Tech Department of Biological Sciences.

The awards are given by the West Texas Association for Women in Science during the spring semester each year. They recognize men (Champion of Women Award) and women (Outstanding Woman Leader Award) who are active supporters of women in science, and who have demonstrated their commitment to the education, training and mentoring of women in S.T.E.M., as well as to overall gender equity in science.

NICK BURNS , A student in the Rawls College of Business STEM MBA program, will be honored with the Silver and Black Give Back Scholarship, appointed by the Texas Business Hall of Fame Foundation.

The endowed scholarship grants Burns a $15,000 stipend to pursue his business goals, based on his leadership skills, business acumen and entrepreneurial desire. Burns is one of 28 students from Texas universities to receive a scholarship. He will be honored Oct. 28 at the annual scholarship luncheon as well as during the Texas Business Hall of Fame 33rd Annual Induction Dinner in Houston.

Burns is pursuing innovative solutions in Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. He co-owns a technology start-up that focuses on integrating bio-metric sensors with RFID technology, while using Big Data Analytics for insight.

Additionally, Burns is securing business partnerships to expand these efforts toward various markets.

Prior to joining the STEM MBA program, which he will complete in December, Burns served in the U.S. Army and Texas Army National Guard for five years as a combat engineer. He received the Rawls College’s inaugural Rawls Endowed Military Scholarship, which helped fund his STEM MBA studies.
