Jennifer and Bill: I received a text message from Mike O’Brien from Midland this morning asking me if I had read Bill’s story about his Dad—George O’Brien. His timing was good as I had just read the story. Mike is a Red Raider like his hero Dad. Mike was touched deeply by this article.

Wanted to thank both of you for making this story happen. It reinforces his great story of courage and determination and the making of a genuine hero with West Texas and Texas Tech roots. Your story clearly shows why he was nominated for the Medal of Honor and then received it on Oct. 27, 1953, exactly one year to the day after his heroic service in Korea. Great article and a great way to showcase this very good man.

Also wanted to thank Dr. Nellis and Juan Muñoz for their efforts to find the right vehicle/instrument to honor our only Medal of Honor Hero, George O’Brien. I really appreciate their commitment and determination to make this happen now. Also appreciate John Steinmetz’s passion to get this done, too.

We will be featuring George O’Brien as well as four other great heroes at our Honoring Heroes dinner on Oct. 26. As I told Juan, we are committed and determined to net $100,000 for our three Veteran’s Advocacy groups that we help. If we raise more than $100,000, we will give monies to the Military and Veteran’s Program at Tech. Juan then said that he would match it. Tech is to be commended for this great program and for their passion to help vets.

Kal Segrist I F I R ST ME T Kal Segrist when I participated in the Bobby Moegle Baseball Camp at Lubbock Christian University in June 1964. We didn’t have a lot of interaction then because he worked with the older players at the camp and I worked with the youngest.

Later, Peggy and I bought our first house in Lubbock, and Kal and Becky Segrist lived one house over directly across the street. Two of their sons, Kris and Scott, played Colt League baseball for me.

His daughter Susan was a cheerleader at Tech during my earlier years when I served as cheerleader sponsor.

Over the years, we became good friends and shared many stories. Likewise, Peggy and Becky also became close and even though we have moved, they are still close.

Kal, Texas Tech’s second-longest tenured baseball coach in program history and a Hall of Honor member, passed away June 26 at age 84.

Ironically, he took a fall while coming to a Tech baseball game that set off a series of setbacks that ultimately resulted in his passing.

He became an assistant to Berl Huffman at Texas Tech in 1965 and took over head coaching duties three seasons later. The program he inherited had little support from the athletics department. Spring sports were simply not much of a priority in those days because of financial constraints.

There has been an outpouring of praise for Kal since his death, but there sure wasn’t much while he coached the Red Raiders. He had fewer resources to work with than most of his competitors, but he made do. He could often be seen prior to and after workouts tending to the field. His team often traveled in private vehicles.

There was no fence in right field or center field, and there was a tree in front of the fence in left field. That tree mysteriously disappeared one year, but that is another story. The “grandstand” would accommodate 500 at the most. Home plate was where the right field corner is now.

We have come light years since those days.

Kal also taught softball, basketball, refereeing and archery in the Physical Education Department until his retirement in 1994.

He was named to the Texas Tech Hall of Honor in 1993.

In 16 seasons (1968 to 1983) he had a record of 317 victories, which is second behind Larry Hayes in Texas Tech baseball history.

The Red Raiders finished with 20 or more wins nine times under Segrist, including a 32-win season in 1976. Texas Tech finished third in the Southwest Conference twice during his tenure.

His 1980 squad finished 28-23-1 overall to go along with a 14-10 mark in league play, marking the most conference wins by a Red Raider team during the first 31 years of baseball at Texas Tech.

Regarded as one of the top offensive coaches in the country, Segrist was recognized as the SWC Coach of the Year on three occasions—in 1969, 1980 and 1982. In addition to his success on the diamond, Segrist was also cred-

ited for spearheading the idea of having the SWC Postseason Tournament.

I participated in several “Old Timers Games” at Tech and marveled at how Kal, despite bad knees, could still hit—mostly frozen ropes that either hit or cleared the outfield fences.

He would often show me his plans for a new baseball stadium. His dream was realized in 1983. He was the architect of what is now Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

Kal also served on the NCAA baseball rules committee.

Texas Tech retired Segrist’s No. 24 jersey on May 1, 2010, making him just the fourth individual and the second head coach to have his number retired in Texas Tech baseball history.

He and Becky rarely missed a game after his retirement. I think one of his great joys was when they traveled to Omaha last year to see the Red Raiders in their first appearance at the College World Series.

Kal played college baseball at the University of Texas where he helped lead the Longhorns to the 1951 national championship. He was named to the College World Series all-tournament team after leading the tourney in home runs. He was also named to the All-SWC team after leading the conference with a .442 average. He hit the first home run and the first grand slam home run in the old Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, where the CWS was played for many years.

Following the national title run, Segrist signed a professional contract with the New York Yankees.

He made his major league debut with the Yankees on July 16, 1952, playing on the same team with the legendary Mickey Mantel. He was involved in a huge 16-player trade and went the Baltimore Orioles in 1955. He spent 11 years playing in Canada, the Pacific Coast League and the Texas League. Chronic knee problems curtailed his career.

Segrist returned to college soon after his retirement as he received his bachelor’s degree from North Texas State in 1962.

Kal is survived by his wife, Becky, and his children, Susan Vestal, Kathy Smith, Kris, Scott, Sunny Beth and Sandy.

PEOPLE NIKHIL DHURANDHAR, PH.D., A PROFESSOR AND CHAIRMAN OF THE DEPARTMENT OF NUTRITIONAL SCIENCES IN THE COLLEGE OF HUMAN SCIENCES AT TEXAS TECH , received almost $3 million from Vital Health Interventions to continue his research that led to the discovery of a virus that causes obesity. Dhurandhar first noticed the phenomenon years ago in rodent models and found it was caused by human adenovirus 36, which causes obesity in human beings and animals while, paradoxically, reducing blood sugar. He isolated a protein from adenovirus 36 responsible for reducing blood sugar and tested it on both diabetic cells and animals. Both experiments showed the protein improved diabetes by reducing blood glucose levels in the absence of insulin while also reducing uncontrolled release of glucose from the liver. Other researchers performing similar experiments confirmed Dhurandhar’s results. His next step is to develop a drug that will eventually be tested on humans and if successful, could be a step forward in treating diabetes.

LANCE NAIL, PH.D., DEAN OF THE RAWLS COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AT TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY, WAS CHOSEN TO BE PART OF AN INITIATIVE THAT WILL HELP CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN IN BUSINESS. The White House Council on Women and Girls and the Council of Economic Advisers invited Nail to represent the Rawls College at the Convening on the Working Families Economic Agenda. The event, held Aug. 5 at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C., brought together the business community and 40-50 business schools from throughout the country to look at ways to increase opportunities for women in business. Attendees focused on recruiting, training and retaining future leaders in the work force.

NIKHIL DHURANDHAR, PH.D., MENTIONED IN THE BRIEF, TOP LEFT, ALSO RECEIVED A GRANT FROM THE AMERICAN EGG BOARD TO STUDY THE ROLE OF EGGS IN WEIGHT LOSS. Dhurandhar, through a series of experiments, will study whether eating eggs for breakfast while on a diet can contribute to greater weight loss.

The study will include 20 participants, all healthy plus-sized women between the ages of 18 and 44, and will compare the effects of eating an egg breakfast compared to a breakfast of similar calories and nutrients, but lower protein quality.

RAWLS COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AT TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY BROKE GROUND ON THE $15 MILLION EXPANSION PROJECT that will result in a new west wing for the existing building.

Texas Tech Board of Regents approved the new threestory, 38,000-square-foot addition that will match the current design of the building by designer Parkhill, Smith & Cooper, Inc.

Landmark volunteers come from all over the world to uncover such artifacts as this Ancient Bison mandible dated to 10,000 years ago found this summer.

VOLUNTEER RESEARCHERS AT LUBBOCK LAKE LANDMARK CONTINUE TO DIG INTO A BISON BONE BED, UNEARTHING SUCH ITEMS AS THE JAWBONE OF A BISON—WITH TEETH STILL INTACT—THAT EXHIBITS MARKS INDICATING HUMAN BEINGS KILLED THE ANIMAL MORE THAN 12,000 YEARS AGO. Katherine Ehlers, crew chief of the landmark’s volunteer excavation team, leads a group of students from all over the world that performs field research at the Lubbock Lake Landmark, a national historic landmark. The archeology site was once a body of water that played host to a variety of plants while attracting bison and other wildlife as well as Paleoindians of the era. On July 11, during Archaeology in Action Family Day, community members had the rare chance to tour the current excavation at the Lubbock Lake Landmark and talk with researchers and the field crew about their experiences and the artifacts they have recovered. The tour’s mission was to educate the public about their cultural and natural heritage.

ON AUG. 1, THE TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW BECAME THE NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS FOR SCRIBES, THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF LEGAL WRITERS. Scribes presents three annual awards, two publications, a quarterly newsletter called The Scrivener and The Scribes Journal of Legal Writing. Texas Tech University School of Law Dean Darby Dickerson, whose presidency of Scribes ended Aug. 1, advocated the organization’s move to Lubbock. Scribes was founded in 1953 by Arthur T. Vanderbilt and promotes better writing throughout the legal community. The organization will be headquartered in Lubbock for at least three years, with an option to renew, but the expectation is Scribes will remain at Texas Tech. Since 2005, Scribes was located at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School at Western Michigan University.

AT THE BEGINNING OF THE FALL SEMESTER, THE COLLEGE OF MEDIA & COMMUNICATION BEGAN OFFERING A NEW ONLINE MASTER’S PROGRAM IN STRATEGIC COMMUNICATION AND INNOVATION. The program is designed to give communicators who are ready to take the next step in their careers an extra edge in the job market or to assist in updating skills in the global digital market. Students will be required to complete 27 hours plus a final project, worth three hours. Enrollment is open year-round. The plan was approved in July by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

National and international volunteers join the research crews each summer to continue the research at the Landmark that has documented 12,000 years of continuous human habitation.

A $144,000 GRANT RECEIVED IN DECEMBER 2011, AS PART OF A NATIONAL HISTORICAL PUBLICATIONS AND RECORDS COMMISSION , to digitize two Families of Vietnamese Political Prisoners Association collections at The Vietnam Center and Archive at Texas Tech University was completed in May. The completion resulted in the availability of 355,274 pages of documents available free online through the Virtual Vietnam Archive.

The archive offers a rare perspective of the war from the South Vietnamese and offers resources for scholars as well as the VietnameseAmerican community.

DURING TWO CEREMONIES ON AUG. 8 AT THE UNITED SUPERMARKETS ARENA, 1,490 UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS RECEIVED THEIR DIPLOMAS. Mark Griffin, president and general counsel of the Griffin Companies, Texas Tech School of Law graduate and former Texas Tech Board of Regents member, was the featured speaker at both ceremonies. Also, Texas Tech University set a record summer semester enrollment with 11,975 students.

ON AUG. 5, TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY CELEBRATED THE OPENING OF THE TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY INNOVATION HUB AND RESEARCH PARK WITH A RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY AT THE FACILITY. The new 40,000 square-foot, $29 million facility was built to promote collaborative research and entrepreneurship between Texas Tech, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and business communities. The Innovation Hub and Research Park is critical in Texas Tech’s efforts to become a major national research university. The Innovation Hub and Research Park is located near the intersection of Fourth Street and Quaker Avenue.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY WAS NAMED THE FOURTH MEMBER OF THE SOUTHWEST NODE OF THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) INNOVATION CORPS, OR I-CORPS. Tech is joining the University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University and Rice University to foster entrepreneurship that will lead to the commercialization of technology previously supported by NSF-funded research. I-Corps is a set of activities and programs that prepares scientists and engineers to extend their focus beyond the laboratory and broadens the impact of select, NSF-funded basic research projects. Texas Tech will support the teaching and training of national I-Corps teams and coordinate regional I-Corps meetings across the Southwest.

CB&I DONATED $1.6 MILLION TO THE TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY WHITACRE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING’S DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING. The gift will fund improvements in the CB&I Advanced Prototyping and Manufacturing Laboratory, formerly known as the machine shop. Mechanical engineering students will soon benefit from the latest technologies in additive manufacturing and will be provided the opportunity to develop the tactile and functional understanding of mechanical and theoretical principles.

Students will have access to state-of-the art technologies in additive manufacturing, such as 3-D printing. CB&I is an energy infrastructure-focused company.

THE LLANO RIVER FIELD STATION RECEIVED AN EDUCATION AND PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD FROM THE UNIVERSITIES COUNCIL ON WATER RESOURCES FOR 2015. The Llano River Field Station, part of the Texas Tech University Center at Junction, provides academic research and service opportunities in the Texas Hill Country and Edwards Plateau. The award recognizes individuals, groups or institutions that have contributed to increasing the public awareness of water resources development, use and management in the natural, biological and social sciences.

Among the current projects conducted and under development at the LRFS is the Upper Llano Watershed Protection Plan, the Texas Water Symposium, Discovery Point Trail and the Outdoor School, which is recognized as a Texas Exemplar Program. LRFS is also a partner with Texas Parks & Wildlife Department’s Guadalupe Bass Restoration Project, a watershed approach aimed at understanding and protecting the State Fish of Texas.

What makes it special now is welcoming to campus new students taking the next step in life and returning students continuing to work toward their goals.

As quickly as fall begins, here we are already nearing the end of another semester. I want to share a few accomplishments: • Once again, we welcomed a record number of students to campus for the fall semester. Nearly 36,000 students are enrolled in classes, including a record Hispanic enrollment, which accounts for 23.3 percent of the student population.

• INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine presented Texas Tech with the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity award.

The university was one of four selected from Big 12 Conference peer institutions.

• Niche ranked the university No. 60 nationally and third in the state of Texas among public universities. The rankings were based on strength of academic programs, aptitude of professors, campus amenities, student life and student reviews.

• The Daily Toreador, Texas Tech’s student-run newspaper, celebrated its 90th birthday during the fall semester. It is an iconic institution within the university and continues to deliver comprehensive journalism to our community.

• Texas Tech’s only undefeated organization also celebrated its 90th birthday. I think you’d agree the Goin’ Band from Raiderland has never lost a halftime.

• The College of Architecture received its second endowed chair, as alumnus Mark Humphreys gifted the college $1.5 million.

• Bayer CropScience opened its seed innovation center on campus in September. The facility will house the company’s global cotton business operations, while strengthening its collaboration with the university and our research enterprise. We also celebrated the opening of the new Bayer Plant and Soil Science Building on campus.

Speaking of alumni events, in addition to visits around the state, I had the opportunity to attend gatherings in Philadelphia and New York in October. These events are reminders of how far our graduates extend throughout the United States and globally, and their passion for Texas Tech is still strong today.

While in New York, I had the opportunity to once again attend a dinner of higher education presidents and national media and discuss issues facing universities and colleges. In addition to open discussion, I also visited with some of these media outlets directly, shared what’s happening on our campus and encouraged a continued dialogue beyond the dinner.

For David Shephard, M.D., ’96, ’98—an orthopedic surgeon—military service was omnipresent in his upbringing. He listened raptly to his father’s and grandfather’s accounts of their military experiences—his great grandfather served in France in World War I, his grandfather served in the South Pacific in World War II and his father served on an attack class submarine during the cold war and during Vietnam. Until David was about four years old, his father was in the United States Navy. He greatly respected both his father and grandfather, and their heroic and sometimes sobering stories were indelibly woven into his childhood memories.

“There’s a lot of military service in my family,” remarks David, who was born at Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, and later moved with his family to Pecos, Texas. “My granddad served in World War II and my father served during Vietnam.”

The Shephards were by no means obsessed with military service, but because it was part of their lives, it was occasionally a topic at family dinners, during dove hunts or birthday parties or drives into Midland, the family’s closest “big town.”

When David turned 18, he told his father he wanted to continue his family’s tradition and enlist in the military.

“My dad refused to let me do it,” he says. “He wanted me to go to college.”

HOME

Pecos is a dusty, remote West Texas town that’s mostly known for its historic rodeo—the “World’s First Rodeo”—and its famous ultra-sweet cantaloupes. The area’s main industries are ranching, oil and gas and farming. Lying between the Midland-Odessa oil patch and the West Texas playgrounds of Balmorhea State Park, the Davis Mountains and Big Bend National Park, the little town is a gateway to Far West Texas for those who live east of Pecos and travel Interstate 20.

It’s not a destination for most people, and for Pecos natives, that’s OK. Living in an isolated small community fosters independence, the people know what they’re about and they’re secure in that knowledge.

After leaving the military, David’s father worked in the oil field. His mother held jobs at the Pyote Youth Center, east of Pecos, and at the local radio station. His parents pushed him and his sisters to excel academically—he is the middle child and has an older sister, who’s a nurse in Midland, and a younger sister, who’s an accountant in Houston.

A small town like Pecos in the 1980s afforded teenagers a fair amount of freedom and, on occasion, an excess of fun. David played every sport available through junior high, until a ruptured appendix sidelined him. He stayed on the Pecos school’s swim team throughout high school, and opted to become a trainer for the football team his freshman year in high school.

“As a trainer, I received a lot of experience and learned basic anatomy,” he explains. “So, you know, my interest in orthopedics was there way back then.”

When he wasn’t working as a trainer or swimming competitively, he’d head outdoors with buddies where he’d partake in hunting, sometimes for unusual prey.

“I’d catch rattlesnakes,” he says, with a grin and a shake of his head. “My friends and I would find them crossing the highways, and we’d catch them, and put them in a bucket. I’d take them in the bucket to the edge of town, to Ricky’s Auto Shop, and Ricky bought them for $7 a pound. He turned around and sold them for $10 a pound to the Rattlesnake Roundup in Sweetwater.”

When high school was drawing to a close, and it came time to apply to colleges, David says he only applied to one.

“I never applied anywhere else,” he says. “I loved Texas Tech.

It’s where I wanted to be.”

He planned to go to medical school; he was determined to become a surgeon. He also knew college would be hard work both academically and financially. As a freshman, he lived in Coleman Hall and delivered pizzas for Dominos to make ends meet.

He was working as a phlebotomist at Methodist Hospital, now Covenant Hospital, when he met a fellow co-ed, Melanie Ferguson, a Lubbock native who was a technician in the hospital pathology lab. It wasn’t long before the two began to date.

“He’s so smart and I knew he’d be successful at whatever he did,” says Melanie, who now assists in managing David’s shared orthopedic surgery practice, Lubbock Sports Medicine. “His patients love him, they talk about how much he’s changed their lives. I’m very proud of him, and he is very humble about his accomplishments.”

Melanie received her bachelor’s degree in cell and molecular biology in in 1995, was a member of Alpha Phi sorority, then returned to Tech to earn her teaching certification, which she completed in 1998. The couple married in 1995 and welcomed their first daughter, Bailey, in 1996.

BECOMING A SURGEON

David began medical school at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio in 1998. Melanie taught biology at Roosevelt High School in San Antonio’s North East Independent School District. The couple had their second daughter, Lauren, in 2000.

David and Melanie were busy young parents, both focused on David completing medical school then heading to his residency.

Then came the terror attacks Sept. 11, 2001, which marked a major turning point in the family’s life. Melanie saw the terror attacks on television while she was at a doctor’s appointment with their youngest daughter, Lauren.

“I still remember vividly where I was,” recalls David. “I was a senior in medical school and was on a research rotation. I was drinking coffee and watching television when the World Trade Center attacks happened. I made my decision then that I was going to join the Army.”

Both David and Melanie say that his announcement didn’t go over well. There was a major disagreement. She wanted him to reconsider.

“I remember asking him, ‘Why would you do this? You’re about to be done with school,’” says Melanie, whose father and grandfather both served in the Army. “He said, ‘My obligation now is to my country. It’s going to happen.’ And that was that.”

The desire he’d had as an 18-year-old was going to be realized. He enlisted in 2002 after graduating from medical school, then completed his residency in orthopedic surgery in Lubbock at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. After gaining some experience, he prepared for his first deployment to the Middle East. The military, of course, had an extraordinary need for surgeons.

BECOMING A SOLDIER

The doctor has served three tours of duty with the U.S. Army Reserve that were about three months each: one in Iraq in 2008 in the 86th Combat Support Hospital in Mosul; 2011 in Afghanistan and finally in 2015 in Afghanistan, the last two tours were part of a Forward Surgical Team, or FST. An FST is a small, mobile surgical unit, and the most severe cases are generally presented to an FST, as those patients, without immediate trauma care, may not survive evacuation to the nearest bricksand-mortar military hospital.

The 2008 tour was a baptism by fire, as his surgical skills were tested immediately, and it wasn’t in a quiet, serene state-ofthe-art surgical suite like he’d trained and practiced in back in Texas. There was heat soaring into triple digits and heavy sandstorms, what Middle Easterners call haboobs. Every case was a trauma, patients were American military personnel as well as enemy combatants.

His second deployment to Afghanistan in 2011 was the busiest, the most difficult emotionally and also exposed him to the bitter cold of an Afghanistan winter. The most recent tour, in southern Afghanistan, which finished up in May of 2015, was less intense, left some downtime for socializing and took place during milder spring weather. The surgeries were performed in makeshift hospitals, giant tents outfitted as miniature surgical suites typical of an FST. It was in these canvas tents that surgeons and medical staff performed life-and-limb-saving surgeries, or sometimes limb-removal surgeries, stabilizing patients before they were flown to larger military base hospitals.

Though each tour was different, there were similarities with each. Medical personnel had to be ready to act at a moment’s notice, and when the call came over the radio call system that casualties were inbound, it was time to hustle. The distant thrum of helicopter rotors was a powerful reminder that wounded were incoming. In his second service period in 2011, David’s station—the Shake Out Shack—was the first stop for the injured.

“I basically sorted through the injured when they were multiple, examined them for unexploded ordinance, ammunition, or weapons with the help of other trained personnel,” explains David. Because medical staff treated Americans as well as Afghani Insurgents, or A.I., this was a necessary step to prevent the A.I.s from being moved into the hospital with hidden explosives or weapons. “Then the patient was taken into the hospital proper where the general surgeons I was with were treating the patients with ATLS (protocol-advanced trauma life support). When triage was complete, I joined in with the ATLS.” Without an experiencing it firsthand, understanding the job of military medical personnel is a little mysterious. For those who’ve watched the old television show “M*A*S*H,” David says that’s a pretty accurate descriptor of the facilities at the FST. Military surgeons and their staff are insulated from some of the destruction and trauma of war, since they’re not on the front lines. However, medical personnel see the ravages of war every day, up close. It’s a nonstop barrage because their job is to repair the carnage. There are no routine days.

BACK HOME

After long days in the surgical suite during his tours, David would take refuge in the tent he shared with other surgeons.

Inside, his living quarters were stark, bare and basic. There were precious few luxuries; most of those being food items shipped in care packages from home.

While on his tours, the highlight of each day was calling home, always via Skype, to videoconference with Melanie and their two daughters. For both Melanie and David, they say that was one of the most difficult parts of every deployment: missing his girls.

“As the girls got older with each deployment, it got a little easier,” says Melanie. “This last time things weren’t as active (in Afghanistan) as they had been. But it’s always hard.”

Of the many titles he’s had, “father” is undoubtedly his favorite. When his daughters Bailey and Lauren were asked: “Did you miss your dad when he was gone?”

Their response was an enthusiastic, “Yes!” in unison.

During the initial photo shoot for the story, Lauren came home from cheerleading practice and gave her father a long hug, eyes squeezed shut, as if she was still getting used to having him back home.

It was a moment that illuminated the best part of a deployment for a family: the soldier coming home.

EDITOR’S NOTE: I possess a high level of admiration for military service personnel and the always-astonishing sacrifices they make.

When I pray, and when my family prays together, we always include, “God, please be with our military service personnel and their families, bring them peace and strength as they protect America.”

I’ve no doubt military service is one of those things that, unless you’ve experienced it, either as a member of the military or a family member of one, you can’t fathom what an enormous sacrifice it is.

We go about our days, blithely complaining about traffic, indulging ourselves with dinners out, shopping, attending sporting events, living our lives, often oblivious to their daily sacrifices. These servicemen and servicewomen spend months away from their spouses, children, loved ones. They miss births and deaths, birthdays and anniversaries, banal trips to the grocery store, Christmases… They miss everything. For us.

So when I first was contacted by Melanie, Dr. David Shephard’s wife, I was a little surprised to learn that he voluntarily postponed his civilian surgical career to join the Army. What struck me first upon meeting David is how down-to-earth he is. My immediate thought was, “This is a really good person.” He’s outgoing, personable, highly likeable, humble and much-loved by his wife, two daughters and many patients. And, wow, what a sacrifice he has made for our country.

BRIGHT SPOTS WCOE INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE PROGRAM A

first for a state school, engineering program, and in response to industrys requests, all undergraduate engineering students at Texas Tech are now required to have an international experience before graduation. This initiative allows students to conduct studies and research and gain professional experience in the farthest reaches of the globe.

TERRY FULLER PETROLEUM ENGINEERING RESEARCH BUILDING The Bob L. Herd Department

of Petroleum Engineering is now home to a new $22.8 million research facility funded entirely by industry and private contributions. The Terry Fuller Petroleum Engineering Research Building is named in recognition of lead benefactors and Texas Tech University graduates, Terry and Linda Fuller of Frisco, Texas. The building houses 42,000 square feet of modern classroom and research space and sets the national benchmark for petroleum educational facilities.

YOUNG GUNS The young engineering alumni organization, Young Guns, currently boasts active chapters in Houston, Midland, Austin, Lubbock, Dallas and Fort Worth. The purpose of the organization is to provide industry feedback to the dean, give back time and resources to the Whitacre College of Engineering and serve as a resource for connecting recent engineering alumni.

The Center for Nanophotonics conducts research and development on manipulation of photons-electrons in nano-scale materials for innovative photonic devices and emerging technologies.

ENGINEERING OPPORTUNITIES CENTER The Engineering Opportunities Center offers resources to students to help ensure their success such as advising, mentoring, tutoring and academic recovery programs. The EOC is equipped with the ConocoPhillips Center for Engineering Enrichment and Diversity to expand the college’s efforts to increase diversity and retention through strategic recruiting and academic support.

MADDOX ENGINEERING RESEARCH CENTER Under contract and scheduled for completion in Fall 2016.

The center will house the NAE Maddox chairs and eight other faculty in a state-of-the-art research facility concentrating on water-related research and energy research. In addition, it will house 21st century materials characterization facility second to none in the state of Texas.

INCREASED DIVERSITY Diversity, in all its forms, is

a priority in the Whitacre College of Engineering.

Diversity has been increased in the college by targeted recruiting, targeted scholarships and developing a more welcoming environment. The amount of women in the college has increased by five percent since 2010 and the amount of underrepresented minorities is well above the national average with 22 percent of the student body represented by Hispanic students.

The David and Karen Pace Advanced Software & Systems Lab in the Department of Computer Science was recently completed and began being utilized by students this fall.

At 96 years old, after a 31-year military career spanning three wars and several continents, plus a second career, most people would enjoy sipping sweet tea on a front porch and watching the world go by.

Not Claude L. Hooker.

He still drives himself to volunteer at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Meals on Wheels, his church or other places where he enjoys helping people on a weekly basis.

“I would go crazy if I sat around the house all day,” the 1940 Texas Tech graduate says.

You have to wonder where someone gets the drive, desire—or both—to keep going, serving others. Most people would feel they had done their duty after working and raising four sons.

No, not Claude L. Hooker.

Chopping down and stacking up prickly pear leaves on ranches near his hometown of Albany, Texas, Hooker managed to make and save enough money to fulfill his wish to attend Texas Technological College in the 1930s. He began working the land every summer beginning his junior year in high school until he graduated from college.

The hard work he did and the discipline he learned growing up in West Texas and during college prepared him for what would turn out to be a prestigious career in the United States Army, leading to his retirement in 1972—as a full colonel.

Hooker started out a government major at Texas Tech but soon switched majors. He graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

Life was just beginning to get interesting for the young man.

“When I got out of Texas Tech, I saw an advertisement about the possibility to become an ensign in the Navy,” he says. “I signed up. I went to New York City.

At one point, we boarded the USS Quincy, which was a heavy cruiser. We were out on the sea for 30 days, and I was seasick for 30 days.

“They decided I would not be a very good possibility to go to Officer Candidate School. They discharged me, and I hitchhiked back to Texas from New York. I was entitled to about $65 for pay for my train fare. I decided I wanted to keep the $65, so I hitchhiked back and made it in five days. Back then, hitchhiking was easy for a young guy.

“So, that was my Navy career.”

When World War II started and the draft heated up, Hooker didn’t think much about his being called up because he had a low draft number.

“I was drafted in February 1941,” he says. “I came to Dallas and was put on a train to El Paso. The only thing I had heard about El Paso was it was the home of the cavalry. I nearly had a heart attack because I couldn’t ride a horse. I was one happy person

when they picked me up and took me to the William Beaumont General Hospital.”

Although he was drafted for only one year, the military extended his service indefinitely when Pearl Harbor occurred. He was assigned to the hospital as a corpsman for $21 per month.

Hooker then decided to apply for Officer Candidate School in January 1942. He attended OCS in Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, completing the course in March 1942.

His first assignment as an officer was one that would change his life in many ways. The young second lieutenant was sent to the San Antonio Supply Depot at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Because he first worked at the hospital in El Paso, it seemed that his career destiny was to be involved in the medical field.

Hooker spent the rest of his military career in the field of materiel services for the army, which includes purchasing and several other functions. His hospital experience and education in math were important to his success.

“In San Antonio, I met my wife, Etta Marie,” he says.

“She came out to apply for a position as a key-punch operator at the post. She had just gotten out of high school, and I met her, and it led to other things.

“We’ve now been married 72 years.”

Fort Sam Houston became Hooker’s favorite assignment. In fact, it was his last Army post, as he was stationed there when he retired.

“I was never in combat, but I was in Europe in World War II and then in Korea when the Korean affair was going on and then in Vietnam in 1970,” he says. “I pretty well saw the world.”

Hooker was assigned to the surgeon’s office at Headquarters, European Command, during World War II. He served in England and France.

“When we went to England, we rode on a ship,” he says. “I was seasick the entire 10-day trip.”

After World War II ended, he and his family lived in New York City. He had been promoted to captain and was part of the Surgeon General’s Office, working in requirements and stock control.

At the end of the six-year assignment, the Army paid for him to attend Columbia University in New York City as a full-time graduate student to obtain a master’s degree in business.

Hooker served with the 60th Medical Depot in Korea from 1953-54, during the war.

After his tour in Korea, his wife and sons met him in Japan, and he had a two-year assignment in the surgeon’s office, Headquarters Army Forces Far East, Camp Zama, Japan. In 1963, they had a three-year assignment in France, where he held key medical positions.

Apparently, the Army was impressed with Hooker’s performance and academic abilities and sent him to earn a master’s degree in logistics from Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.

Hooker was chosen as the officer to represent the Surgeon General’s Office on the faculty of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces from 1966-1970 in Washington, D.C. “It was a wonderful assignment, but it had nothing to do with medical,” Hooker says. “We spent one week visiting industrial plants in the United States, and then we always had a two-week tour of foreign countries, visiting military places. The first year, I took my group of 18 people to study NATO logistics. We visited England, Belgium and Norway. My second year, I repeated the same trip. My third year, we visited Greece and Turkey. My fourth year on the faculty, we visited Panama, Venezuela and Colombia.”

Hooker also graduated from the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, a graduate school for Army officers.

Then came the Vietnam War. Hooker’s assignment at the Industrial College ended in 1970, and he knew he had two years of service left before he could retire. He hoped that his last assignment would be at his favorite post—Fort Sam Houston.

“My dearest friend in the military was in charge of assignments,” he says. “He called me and said, ‘Hook, I have your assignment.’ I said, ‘Well, I assume it’s going to be Fort Sam Houston.’ He said, ‘Not exactly–it’s Vietnam.’

“That was my dearest friend. He said, ‘Well, you will still have one year to do when you finish up Vietnam, and I will guarantee that you will be assigned to Fort Sam for your last assignment.’ And he did it.

“Vietnam turned out to be a wonderful assignment. My friend told me, ‘Any time you really need something and you can’t get it and you think it’s important, you just send me a message.’ I used that three times during my 12 months, and he responded every time.”

In Vietnam, Hooker was assistant chief of staff for supply, maintenance and services, U.S. Army Medical Command.

When he returned to Texas and his last post, he served as chief of the medical supply and maintenance branch, Fifth Army surgeon’s office.

“I’ve got a few awards, no combat awards,” he says. “I have the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, which means I’ve been awarded it two times. I have the Bronze Star, also with Oak Leaf Cluster. I also received the Meritorious Service Award.

“I have a bunch of ribbons, but they were just because you were there; they only mean you were in France or Germany or wherever.”

Hooker retired from the service June 30, 1972, at Fort Sam Houston, after 31 years of active duty. During the ceremony, Lt. Gen. Patrick F. Cassidy, Fifth U.S. Army commander, decorated Hooker for outstanding meritorious services while serving at Fort Sam Houston with his second Legion of Merit Medal.

After retiring from the service, Hooker and his wife wanted to live in San Antonio. However, life had other plans for him.

He accepted a position as director of materiel services, which included heading up purchasing, at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. The family relocated to Mesquite, Texas. He worked at the medical center for 16 years.

Hooker has remained connected to the medical field by volunteering for 25 years in the ER at Baylor University Medical Center. He has just completed 9,500 volunteer hours.

“Claude Hooker is a devoted husband and father, an accountant, very active in his church and every Thursday, he volunteers his time to help the patients in a trauma center in the inner city,” says Kimberly “Kimi” D. Wainwright-Morrison, RN, BSH, a 2001 Texas Tech graduate who works with Hooker. “He is truly a spectacular person and an amazing volunteer.”

Hooker is also in his 27th year of volunteering with Meals on Wheels, having just completed 26 years for the organization.

“He has volunteered to deliver meals for many years in Mesquite,” says Betsy Cox, MA, CVA, managing director of VNA Meals on Wheels & Nutrition Services. “He’s such a dependable and dedicated volunteer that we never have to worry about him missing a scheduled delivery. He delivers more than a meal, spending a few minutes visiting with the isolated seniors on his route and informing the office of additional services they need to remain at home independently.”

Hooker has been the self-proclaimed “Monday Morning Money Counter” for his church for the past 26 years.

Not one to let any grass grow under his feet, the big-hearted volunteer helps people do their taxes.

“The most productive thing I do as a volunteer is that I’ve been a tax guy for AARP for 27 years,” he says. “We help everybody, but 95 percent of people are older people.

I’ve enjoyed that most of all because I majored in accounting, but I never was an accountant. I always had an interest in income tax, which few people do. Most don’t want any part of it. We have to take an exam every year from the IRS before we can do it.”

For close to 100 Texas Tech alumni, fans and friends, the Summer of ’15 was a magical Med delight. Aboard the good ship “Riviera” and hosted by TTU President M. Duane Nellis and his wife, Ruthie, our Traveling Techsans spent eight days and seven nights dining, dancing and sightseeing some of the most beautiful spots on Earth. The “Pearls of the Mediterranean,” sponsored by Oceania Cruises, began in Rome and ended in Monte Carlo with six stunning Ports of Call in between. This voyage included adventures in locales such as Amalfi, Sardinia, Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona and Marseille.

President Nellis and Ruthie celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with these Red Raider faithful and were serenaded and toasted by the ship’s crew. Beautiful weather along with the ship’s decadent amenities made for the dream vacation of a lifetime.

THE TEX A S TEC H men’s basketball team canned nine of its 12 three-pointers and shot 60 percent from the floor during the second half to claim an 84-65 victory over Ottawa University Aug. 16 at Champlain Gymnasium.

The Red Raiders wrapped up their Canadian Tour with an undefeated 4-0 record. Texas Tech also defeated McGill University (54-46) Aug. 16 in Montreal, Laval University (88-53) Aug. 17 in Quebec City and Carleton University (6760) on Aug. 19 in Ottawa.

Jordan Jackson provided a team-leading 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting coupled with five steals and two assists. He reached double figures in three of Tech’s four games in Canada.

Justin Gray collected 11 points sparked by a trio of three-pointers. All 11 of Gray’s points came in the fourth quarter during a three-minute span.

“I was really happy with the way our team competed,” head coach Tubby Smith said. “This trip was a great opportunity for our team especially for our freshman to see how they respond on the road. It’s good to see Justin make some outside shots, that’s not what he is noted for. He gives us a different level of energy. Jordan finds a way to win.

He does it on both ends of the court with five steals, and he knocked down two three-pointers. You look at that box score, that’s pretty impressive.”

On the inside, Isaiah Manderson and Norense Odiase chipped in 10 points apiece. The duo combined for 11 of its 12 rebounds on the defensive end. Aaron Ross added eight points and two rebounds.

Devon Thomas filled the box score with eight points, five assists, four rebounds, a steal and a block. Zach Smith secured six points, five rebounds and four assists, while Devaugntah Williams came away with six points.

distributed 22 assists on their 32 field goals. Ottawa countered with a 32-for-65 effort from the field. Once again, Texas Tech’s perimeter defense was strong and forced its opponent to miss 25 of its 34 three-point attempts.

The Red Raiders led wire-to-wire and scored the game’s first five points courtesy of Smith’s two-handed jam, and a Toddrick Gotcher three-pointer off a delayed fastbreak.

Tech extended its lead to double figures, 21-11 at the 1:01 mark of the first stanza, after Ross banked home a three-ball from the top of the key.

Ottawa used an 8-2 spurt over the final two minutes of the second quarter to pull as close as 35-30 heading into halftime.

Out of the locker room, the Red Raiders started the third quarter strong and ripped off 11 of first 16 points to push their advantage back into double figures. Smith ignited the flurry with a layup and dunk followed by Odiase midrange jumper and dunk.

Thomas dialed up a triple from the left wing to make it 46-34 with 4:42 remaining.

Ottawa trimmed the Texas Tech advantage down to 51-42 at the end of the third quarter.

Ahead 58-47 with 8:02 to go in the fourth quarter, Gray caught fire and put the game away for the Red Raiders. He rattled a trio of triples sandwiched between a breakaway dunk over a three-minute stretch. Texas Tech had a 71-56 lead at the 5:17 mark.

Williams, Jackson and Andrew Sorrells tacked on three-pointers of their own to bring the Red Raiders three-point total to seven in the final stanza and enabled Tech to close out the decisive victory with a 33-point fourth quarter.

“We just have to keep reminding ourselves and reminding the players of what we were able to accomplish,” Smith said.

“That’s what you can point to from these four games. You can reflect back on these moments and be able to use them when we have some adversity during the season. That is what the team bonding is all about. They can pick each other up, and they can encourage each other. That is what is going to help them throughout the season.”

Federation’s 2015 Silver Medal Award Reception honored Bill Dean, Ed.D., as its 56th recipient the evening of July 21 at the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center in Lubbock. The Silver Medal Award recognizes those who have made outstanding contributions to advertising, who have been active in furthering the industry’s standards and have achieved creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern.

The Waco Chapter held a freshman sendoff in August at the home of Carey Hobbs.

Cooke County students attended a sendoff in August.

The Collin County Chapter of the Texas Tech Alumni Association held a scholarship reception in June at the home of Linda and Terry Fuller in Frisco, Texas. I graduated from Texas Tech in 1964 with a B.A. in Chemistry and graduated from Baylor University Law School with L.L.B. in November 1967.

WHERE ARE YOU EMPLOYED AND WHAT IS YOUR POSITION? I

am of counsel to Ward, Smith & Hill, PLLC after retiring from 12 years of service as a U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Texas (1999-2011).

In August, the Northeast Tarrant County Chapter held a scholarship dinner in Grapevine. The event was dutch treat with a silent auction that raised close to $4,000 in scholarship funds.

WHAT ARE THE NAMES OF YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS? Elizabeth “Cissy” Clark Ward (Texas Tech, 1986); Susan Ward (Oklahoma 1990); Johnny Ward (J.D. Texas Tech, 1995) and wife Nell (TCU, 1995); D.C. BOOKS TIFFANY ROBERTS KRISTYNIK (BS ’03

Animal Science) Houston, Texas, teaches junior high science and while at Texas Tech she was a member of the 2003 National Championship Meat Judging Team and a member of the High Riders organization.

Tiffany calls herself an avid Red Raider fan and says she authored the book “Goodnight Red Raiders” for little Red Raiders everywhere. The book follows the pattern of the classic, “Goodnight Moon.” The brightly illustrated book is a journey of traditions, campus icons and Red Raider spirit. Tiffany says this book will put a smile on the face of readers as they drift off to dreamy Red Raider sleep. “Goodnight Red Raiders” is available for purchase on Amazon.com.

STEPHEN MCLELLAN (BS ’92 Physical Education) Seabrook, Texas, authored the book, “I’ve Known No War.” Stephen recently embarked on a second career as a junior high social studies teacher. Previously, he handled claims for insurance companies while also serving 20 years in the United States Navy Reserve, and retired at the rank of chief petty officer. He was recalled to duty three times, including service in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. His book follows two lifelong friends who are destined for great things: one an Ivy League education, the other a career in professional baseball. September 11, 2001, changed the plans of both young men when they chose to postpone following their dreams and instead enlist in the military. Stephen says his book is a story of unselfishness, courage, loyalty, and above all, friendship. “I’ve Known No War” is available for purchase on Amazon.com.

1969 TROY LYNN LOVELL (BS Engineering)

Fort Worth, Texas, received the 2015 Distinguished Engineer of the Texas Engineering Foundation award from the Texas Society of Professional Engineers.

As vice president of Halff Associates, Inc., Troy has more than 45 years of experience in civil engineering and water resources planning and management.

He worked for the Fort Worth District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 13 years before joining Halff Associates in January 1981. A professional engineer and Diplomat of the American Academy of Water Resources Engineers, Troy was inducted into the Texas Tech Civil and Environmental Engineering Academy in 1990. He and wife, Oleta M. Lovell, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this year.

1977 MARK WELLEN (BAR Architecture)

Midland, Texas, is the co-creator and organizer of the highly successful annual Texas Architects Design Conference, now entering its third year. The annual event brings design-oriented architects from around the state and beyond to exchange ideas and gather inspiration. He has served on numerous educational and professional design juries, lectured and taught at universities, presented at architectural conventions and symposia and contributed to professional committees, including the Texas Society of Architects (TxA) Design Awards committee, which oversees the statewide design awards program. He is a founding member of the Texas Tech University College of Architecture’s visiting critic’s studio, a graduate course. Mark and his partners endowed a scholarship at Texas Tech to support students who qual-

ify for this studio. He was also named a 2014 Distinguished Alumni for the College of Architecture at Texas Tech University.

His wife is DELAYNE BROWN WELLEN (BA ’78 Journalism).

1981 CRAIG A. HAYNES (BA Political Science) Garland, Texas, was recognized by The Legal 500 US 2015 for his industry focus in energy litigation. He is noted as the leader of his firm’s team in Dallas, Texas, for counseling clients “across the spectrum of energy, including those involved with the exploration, development, production, storage, transportation and processing of resources.” Craig is an attorney at the law firm of Thompson & Knight.

1982 JOE D. ROBINSON, M.D. (BS Zoology) San Antonio, Texas, was promoted to Brigadier General in the Army Reserves on April 10, 2015. He is the Deputy Commander of the 3D Medical Command based out of Atlanta, Georgia.

His wife is Sandy.

1983 JILL CRUTCHFIELD (BA Advertising) Midland, Texas, the former captain of the Texas Tech Women’s Tennis Team, was recently inducted into the Duncan, Oklahoma, High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Her former Texas Tech tennis coach, Harrison “Mickey” Bowes, introduced her at the ceremony at Duncan High School. Her husband is DAVID COUNTS (BA ’83 Advertising).

BRIAN C. NEWBY (BA History) Fort Worth, Texas, a former regent for the Texas Tech University System, was promoted to Major General in the Air Force National Guard JAG Corps. He was assigned as the National Guard Advisor to the Judge Advocate General of the U.S. Air Force and thus became the nation’s senior USAF National Guard lawyer. He is

Robin is a partner in the law firm of Andrews Kurth LLP, and is the co-chair of the firm’s bankruptcy and financial restructuring section and serves as a member of numerous firm committees, including the policy and finance committees. Her practice combines a depth of experience in bankruptcy restructuring and litigation with financial transaction work. She is married to James Paulsen.

Trade) Amarillo, Texas, is the new vice president of fitness at the St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Mark has 25 years of experience, most recently serving as the president of the National Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation in New York. Twenty two years of his career were spent at the American Cancer Society in a variety of roles including chief development and community engagement officer in its Great West Division in Seattle. He developed strategy and supported its $56 million annual giving program, helped to increase Relay For Life income from $24 million to $33 million and expanded community sites from 330 to 515. He also served as vice president Relay For Life business unit and as regional and executive director in Texas.

LAUREN LOVELACE (BS MS ’04 Animal Science) Fort Worth, Texas, former assistant manager of the horse show at the Fort Worth Stock Show, was promoted to the position of horse show manager.

Lauren has been with the Fort Worth Stock Show since 2005. Her responsibilities include implementation of Ranching Heritage Weekend, the AQHA Best of the Remuda Horse Sale, Invitational Ranch Horse Show and Sale, the nine breed/ discipline horse show and the Equine Scholarship Program. Her team prepares arenas for the different show dates, assists judges during the competitions, prepares awards and payouts and submits results to breed associations. In 2015, the Fort Worth Stock Show horse shows attracted more than 4,500 entries in the nine breed/discipline shows. Lauren is the current 2015-2016 Fort Worth Farm and Ranch Club President, co-chair for the Young Guns with the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame, secretary/treasurer for the Citizens Support Group for the Fort Worth Mounted Patrol and serves on the AQHA Marketing Committee. Lauren was featured in the March/April 2014 issue of the Texas Techsan magazine.

Spires, a master educator in the District of Columbia Public Schools, received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) for the District of Columbia on July 1. The presidential awards are the nation’s highest honors for math and science teachers. One high school

Fernandez-Romero, the founding STEM educator and STEM director for the Latin American Youth Center Career Academy in D.C., was presented the National Science Teachers Association’s (NTSA) Distinguished Service to Science Education Award. The award is given to two teachers each year who advance science education and science teaching. team took first place for their presentation on how to preserve Tibetan heritage and culture at the Tibetan Innovation Challenge (TIC) held in July at the Tibet House U.S. in New York City. The team of SABA NAFEES, BENJAMIN JARVIS, STEPHANIE DELEON, TAILOR BROWN and CALEB FISHER beat five other teams from across the U.S. with their business plan that would help ensure the economic future of Tibetans after their homeland was taken over by China 55 years ago.

The team will have a chance to travel to India, where many Tibetans fled after the Chinese takeover, to meet the people and see their plan being put into action.

The Tibetan Innovation Challenge was founded after the Dalai Lama expressed concern over the number of young Tibetans who were forced to flee their homeland in search of jobs. The program goal is to empower Tibetans to seize control of their economic futures with self-sustaining business ideas through a new intercollegiate social entrepreneurship business plan contest.
