My name is Greg Browning. I graduated from Texas Tech in May 2014 with a mechanical engineering degree. I recently returned from a business trip to India where the company I currently work for, NCH Corporation, has a small office.

During my time in India, I shook many hands, trained the associates at the office there, and travelled around the country seeing the equipment my company makes in the field.

At one specific location in India, an associate and I installed a piece of equipment in a farm and then had to train the farmers to use the equipment. The language barrier was very large, and even my associate was having trouble translating for me. I ended up training them using hand motions. Once we finished up, they wanted a photo to document the venture, and I happened to be wearing my red and black. My mom suggested I send the photo to the alumni magazine to show what a recent grad is now doing. So attached to this email is that photo.

Let me know if I can give you any more information about this; it was a very rewarding experience for myself. I feel very fortunate because Texas Tech has gotten me to where I am today. We Red Raiders are doing big things.

I would like to send something that may not be newsworthy for the Techsan, but I feel like it needs to be shown as the impact has been enormous! This is a feel good story about Wes Welker that has brought two best friends just a little closer.

In 2003, my college roommate and best friend whom I met at Tech went to the annual red and black spring game. From there we got a program that had players’ names and on the back. I believe it had the schedule for the upcoming year. We waited in line after the game and were excited to meet him and get his autograph as we were huge Tech fans, obviously.

A few years passed, and my roommate and I still kept in touch. Then something tragic happened. His apartment caught fire and lost everything, Luckily, he was ok, but some of the most irreplaceable things are always memories from pictures. In this case, it was the autographed program. About a year ago, we met up again, as we still talk almost weekly, but he is in Houston and I am in Dallas.

We got talking about life and mentioned Wes Welker. He mentioned he lost that program, which set me on a mission to get Wes Welker’s autograph for him.

I got his wife to give me their new address, and I set out on a mission. I printed two pictures of Wes Welker and tried every fan address I could find to send them to. Unfortunately, after my pictures got returned undeliverable a few times, I had all but given up. I sent them off one last time. Well the unthinkable happened (see below). Wes Welker sent him an autographed picture!!

This might not seem like a big deal to a lot of people, but as you can see in the picture below, it meant more to him then anyone could imagine. Wes may have just taken a few minutes out of his day to sign it, but the impact was enormous!

I don’t know how to thank him as I do not have any of the addresses I sent it to, or which one actually was the correct one that reached him. I want to make a public thank you to him to let him know it was greatly appreciated!! In a time where NFL players are labeled as not having the character you would want represented by your university, city or team, it is nice to see that a former Tech football player still in all his fame, can be a stand up guy and bring a little joy.

As I stated, I don’t know if this is newsworthy of the Techsan, but even if it isn’t, can you be sure to pass this along so he somehow gets recognition for this, as it was an amazing thing he did, and brought two best friends who met at Tech a little bit closer! Thank you for your time! Wreck ’em!!

Those Who Serve Well

to learn of the passing of Robert Wernsman. He was an outstanding teacher and had a profound impact on students who took his newswriting course in the College of Media & Communication.

Robert had a professional background, serving as editor of the Huntsville, Texas, newspaper and working in the editorial offices of the Big Spring newspaper. He was “old school” and had a passion for teaching students how to write.

Many students feared taking Jour 2310, but once they did, most would tell you they learned a great deal and their writing improved. Wernsman simply would not settle for anything but the student’s best effort. He spent hours in individual sessions with students going over their work and pointing out to them how they could improve.

Professors of upper division courses in journalism often remarked that they could see a definite improvement in the writing of their students once he started teaching Jour 2310.

He also taught Principles of Journalism and attempted to cover many of the critical issues facing print and broadcast journalists today.

He fought cancer for the past 10 years, and it finally forced him to retire after the Fall 2014 semester. I saw him several times in the building after his retirement. He usually came by to offer help and assistance to young faculty teaching his courses. Despite his illness, he never seemed to lose his competitive spirit.

For years, his course followed mine at 11 a.m. in the old Mass Comm Building. His office was right behind that auditorium, so we shared many moments together. Initially, he always gave me a hard time about Nebraska, whose football team was dominant in the early days of the Big 12. He was born in Nebraska. But Tech turned the tables on the Cornhuskers for several years before they left the Big 12. That did not sit well with him.

He will be missed. God rest his soul.

saddened to learn that Steve Uryasz is leaving the athletic department after 17 years of service.

He began in July 1997 after serving at both the Nebraska and Oklahoma State athletic programs. He was initially in charge of student services and then was put in charge of the Red Raider Club in 2000. During the time he served, membership in the Red Raider Club reached record levels.

In 2011, he became senior associate athletics director, development and external operations. He had administrative oversight over the Development and External Operations Division including Ticket Operations, Red Raider Club, Promotions & Fan Engagement, Athletics Communications, Licensing and Digital Media.

Last year, all season tickets for football were sold, and this year all season tickets for baseball were sold. Obviously, Kliff Kingsbury and Tim Tadlock were primarily responsible, but the person in charge deserves some credit for the promotions that enabled this to happen.

Steve was a great partner of the Alumni Association. He was always helpful when we made a request and I personally enjoyed working with him. I will miss him, and so will our staff.

Shortly after the announcement about Uryasz came two other resignations.

Joe Parker, deputy athletics director the past four years, announced he had accepted a position as athletics director at Colorado State. Joe was a great person to work with, and I wish him great success.

Then Blayne Beal, associate athletics director/communications, announced that he had accepted a position in private business and was leaving after 15 years.

Blayne has a bachelor’s degree from Tech and a master’s degree from Tennessee. He returned from Tennessee to Tech in 2000 to work in the sports information department. In 2010, he was promoted to associate athletic director and the primary publicist for football.

Blayne followed in the tradition of Ralph Carpenter, Keith Samples, Joe Hornaday and Chris Cook in doing a first-rate job in a position that has plenty of stress. He has always delivered. He will definitely be missed.

O N E T H I N G T E X A S Tech athletic boosters (notice I didn’t say supporters) have developed over the years is patience.

It is interesting that in the state of Texas five teams were in the NCAA Playoffs this year. They include SMU, Baylor, UT, Stephen F. Austin and Texas Southern. On the women’s side, there were three— Baylor, UT and A&M. Our fans have been patient through some of the worst basketball in Texas Tech history over the previous four years prior to Tubby Smith’s becoming head coach.

The same thing is essentially true for the women.

When Candy Whitaker took over, the well was dry.

Her team this year showed definite improvement. I think there is considerable optimism that both coaches are building a solid program that one day soon will put the Red Raiders into the NCAAs. Patience.

M IC H A E L B OH N ’ 6 5 ’67 has just written a very timely book in view of the state of affairs in Washington, D.C. The book is “President in Crisis,” and it discusses tough decisions made by presidents from Truman to Obama. He looks at 17 crises.

I discovered another interesting sidelight about Mike. He was the subject of a question on “Jeopardy” in December 2013.

Mike recalls, “My neighbor called me one evening in December 2013 and said, “Hey I saw you on “Jeopardy.” Well actually, you were a clue.” He

taped the segment and sent it to me. (As you know, the “Jeopardy” host, Alex Trebek, provides the answer and the contestant replies with the question.)

“The question was ‘Nerve Center’ is Michael Bohn’s history of this room, the White House Crisis Management Center that he once ran.”

The answer was “Situation Room.”

“An Air Force officer was the contestant and knew the question because he likely had been stationed in Washington. The show had no communication with me beforehand, and the category was ‘Political Books.’

“Afterward, I got calls and emails from all over the country from people who said the same thing— “I saw you on ‘Jeopardy.’”

Bohn is a career naval intelligence officer who managed the White House Situation Room during President Reagan’s second term. Other assignments included tours in the Brown Water Navy in Vietnam

and intelligence centers ashore and afloat. He also served as a military social aid to President Nixon.

Author of “Nerve Center: Inside the White House Situation Room” and other books, Bohn has appeared in numerous TV documentaries. He was featured in Discovery Channel’s 2012 special about the secret “doomsday” facilities and procedures that protect the president and was a primary contributor and on-screen personality for the 2010 History Channel documentary, “The President’s Book of Secrets.” Bohn was also a program consultant for two BBC Television documentaries on White House crisis management. He has contributed feature stories to the Washington Post magazine, McClatchy newspapers, McClatchy-Tribune News Service, and the Tribune News Service.

ANDREAS NEUBER, PH.D., AT&T PROFESSOR OF ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING, WAS RECENTLY DESIGNATED AS A HORN PROFESSOR BY THE TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY SYSTEM BOARD OF REGENTS. Established in 1966, the designation is named after Paul Horn, the first president of Texas Tech. The professorship recognizes scholarly achievement and outstanding service to Texas Tech. Of the 86 members recognized as Horn Professors, 32 are still on faculty. Neuber joined Texas Tech in 1996. He is the co-director of the Center for Pulsed Power and Power Electronics. He earned his master’s degree in physics and doctorate in engineering from the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. His research expertise is pulsed power technology and high power microwaves.

TEXAS TECH PROFESSOR JANET FROESCHLE HICKS, PH.D., CHAIRWOMAN OF THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY & LEADERSHIP IN THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION , has been inducted into the American Counseling Association as a fellow. This honor is among the highest honors a professional counselor can receive. Only 127 people have been inducted since 2004, and Hicks is one of only 11 this year. The criteria to be a fellow include innovations in practice, advancing counseling as a field, earning a national and international reputation as an expert and documented evidence of service to the counseling field and the people served.

SIVA VANAPALLI, PH.D., AN ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING IN THE WHITACRE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING , recently received two grants from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas to study the movement of tumor cells throughout the body and new methods of detecting cancer cells. One of the grants was received under the highly competitive CPRIT’s Individual Investigator Program for $674,465. Only about 10 percent of the projects that apply for this grant are funded. The other grant is a high-impact/highrisk grant for $199,993. With the three-year grant, Vanapalli and his collaborators, BOYD BUTLER , Ph.D., in the Department of Biological Sciences and EVERARDO COBOS , M.D., at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, will build microfluidic devices that mimic blood flow to study how tumor cells move inside capillaries, how they squeeze through tight spaces, whether they are subject to fragmentation and how they become stuck. The researchers believe that a better understanding of how tumor cells behave under flow conditions in a human body could lead to better drug testing.

TWO PROFESSORS FROM TEXAS TECH’S DEPARTMENT OF NUTRITIONAL SCIENCES IN THE COLLEGE OF HUMAN SCIENCES RECEIVED PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL AWARDS FROM THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR NUTRITION. NIKHIL DHURANDHAR, PH.D., chairman of the Department of Nutritional Sciences and president of The Obesity Society, received the 2015 Osborne and Mendel Award, which recognizes recent outstanding basic research accomplishments in nutrition. NAIMA MOUSTAID-MOUSSA , PH.D. , the director of the Obesity Research Cluster, accepted the 2015 Pfizer Consumer Healthcare Nutritional Sciences Award, which recognizes significant investigative contributions to the understanding of human nutrition.

NEWS U.S. NEWS AND WORLD REPORT RANKED THE WHITACRE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING NO. 94 IN THE NATION AMONG ENGINEERING COLLEGES. Along with this honor, the online engineering and computer information technology programs through the college were ranked No. 20 and No. 14 respectively in the nation. Individual engineering programs ranked in the top 100 included: chemical engineering at No. 72; civil engineering at No. 91; electrical engineering at No. 83; environmental engineering at No. 70; industrial engineering at No. 45; and mechanical engineering at No. 100.

THE JERRY S. RAWLS COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION WAS NAMED NO. 13 IN MILITARY TIMES’ BEST FOR VETS: BUSINESS SCHOOLS 2015 RANKINGS. The organization focused on culture and curriculum that cater to military veterans when conducting and scoring its third annual Best for Vets: Business Schools survey. The Best for Vets: Business Schools is an editorially independent news project that evaluates the many factors that make an institution a good fit for military veterans.

THE FINANCE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE OF THE TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY SYSTEM BOARD OF REGENTS approved a 2.16 percent net increase in tuition and fees for the 2015-16 academic year. The increase reflects an estimated addition of $104.55 for 15 semester credit hours. It is estimated Texas Tech’s overall tuition and fees of $7,978 for 24-semester credit hours for the 2015-16 academic year will rank third-lowest among nine peer institutions throughout the state, including the University of Texas and Texas A&M University and third-lowest among Big 12 Conference member institutions.

RESEARCHERS AT TEXAS TECH’S NATIONAL WIND INSTITUTE WILL TAKE PART IN A $2.5 MILLION GOVERNMENT RESEARCH PROJECT TO IMPROVE SHORT-TERM WIND FORECASTING IN MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN TO HELP ENHANCE WIND-ENERGY CREATION. Vaisala, a company that manufactures environmental measuring devices, is leading the project.

It is part of the Wind Forecast Improvement Project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. The funding will allow researchers to use advanced meteorological equipment to analyze specific atmospheric characteristics that affect wind flow patterns in canyons.

THE TEXAS INDIGENT DEFENSE COMMISSION HONORED THE TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW for their work in improving indigent defense throughout the state.

The School of Law was presented the Gideon Award for their work in creating the Caprock Regional Public Defender Office. That office provides indigent defense representation to more than 16 rural counties on the South Plains that is more cost effective for communities that have a lack of access to local attorneys who will accept court appointments.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY’S NEW MASKED RIDER, RACHEL MCLELLAND, ACCEPTED THE REINS TO FEARLESS CHAMPION from former Masked Rider Mackenzie White on Friday, April 17. McLelland is the 54th student to serve as the Masked Rider. A junior from Tijeras, N.M., McLelland is a pre-med student also majoring in anthropology. She began riding horses when she was 3 years old. During the next year she will serve as an ambassador for Texas Tech University, travelling more than 15,000 miles to university and civic events with Fearless Champion, the Masked Rider horse.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY RANKED SECOND AMONG UNIVERSITIES IN THE INITIAL PUBLIC OFFERING CLASS OF 2014 , according to a list compiled by Equilar, an executive compensation data firm. Three CEOs who earned their undergraduate degrees from Texas Tech took their companies public during 2014.

Texas Tech tied with Columbia University, Stanford University and the University of North Carolina.

Each school produced three CEOs. Harvard was first with seven CEOs taking their companies public in 2014.

Companies led by CEOs produced by Texas Tech also had an average gain increase of about 7 percent.

Texas Tech students, faculty and staff celebrated Arbor Day 2015 by beautifying the campus. There was live music, free food, t-shirts and reusable water bottles as well as lots of planting. According to records in the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library at Texas Tech, the first Arbor Day at Texas Tech University was March 2, 1938. At the behest of then-university President Bradford Knapp, about 20,000 trees and shrubs were planted around campus by students, faculty and university organizations. The tradition continued for another decade until the university secured funds for a landscape and maintenance department. The tradition was revitalized in 1999 when then-Chancellor John Montford’s wife, Debbie, chose to make campus beautification a priority. This year, almost 150 campus organizations joined in the mass planting.

NATIONAL MERIT FINALISTS WHO DESIGNATE TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY AS THEIR FIRST CHOICE INSTITUTION with the National Merit Corporation will be eligible to receive a scholarship to attend Texas Tech that will cover 100 percent of their cost of attendance. IN APRIL, TEXAS TECH HOSTED “LUBBOCK LIGHTS: CELEBRATING THE MUSICAL HERITAGE OF THE SOUTH PLAINS.” The event honored the wide musical heritage and creative legacy of the South Plains. Honorees at this event were Wade Bowen, Butch Hancock, Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines, two of whom are Texas Tech alumni and three are from Lubbock. All the honorees have an international following. The program was moderated group discussion of their creative process and followed by performances of their original music. In addition to the program, the artists talked about their work and offered their insight into building successful careers in the arts despite coming from small city backgrounds.

Dear Alumni of Texas Tech University, “Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer… ” Nat King Cole describes the perfect summer in his 1963 hit, singing about picnics, drive-ins and days at the beach. As many of you can attest, this isn’t the reality of summertime, but it does momentarily take us away.

Although we hold classes during the summer, enrollment is typically a third of the spring and fall semesters, so summer offers many students and faculty a hard-earned break. For many administrators, educators and researchers, though, the summer provides a valuable window of opportunity to expand on our scholarly pursuits, with time to fully immerse ourselves in our research and collaborate with colleagues.

For faculty conducting research, the summer offers time to collaborate with members from other institutions of higher learning or industry researchers, lend their expertise as visiting professors on other campuses, conduct field work relevant to their research and fulfill on-site obligations as part of research grants.

For example, faculty members in Natural Resources Management are working in the field with Texas Parks and Wildlife, New Mexico Game and Fish and other similar agencies. A faculty member in Plant and Soil Sciences spent the first part of the summer in South Africa sampling soil alongside colleagues and will conduct similar research in Alaska and Romania before fall classes commence.

Our students have an abundance of opportunities as well. In addition to summer courses, students are participating in internships, Study Abroad programs and research opportunities.

Nineteen students are serving as Summer 2015 Congressional interns in Washington, D.C. This popular program has been one of the most successful summer ventures for students, but it also is available during the fall and spring semesters. Nearly

900 students from a variety of majors are participating in Study Abroad programs in Spain, Italy, France and the Czech Republic. The Study Abroad program presents our students with learning opportunities in international settings through programs designed to develop multicultural and global understanding.

Additionally, our students are giving of their time through community outreach. From local initiatives with the Lubbock State School and ongoing fundraising for relief efforts in Nepal to architecture students designing and constructing schools for communities in Panama, our students are spread throughout the globe helping others.

For many of our employees, summertime is conference season. From career development to job specific conferences and seminars, our staff are constantly learning, discovering and sharing best practices in their respective areas. Their diligence in seeking opportunities to enhance their positions benefits all of Texas Tech University.

The entire Texas Tech community is passionate about their pursuits, and we are fortunate they call themselves Red Raiders. Daily, I take pride in the dedication of our faculty, staff and students and am inspired by their commitment to their goals. Whether taking a much needed break, continuing education in the classroom or field or engaging in one of the many outreach opportunities, our people represent us well through their actions.

Dogs and cats have been part of human lives for as long as people can remember.

In fact, people have come to view dogs and cats not only as protectors and companions, but as family members.

Today’s pet owners are more attentive than ever to their fur children.

According to the ASPCA, the average cost for the first year of owning a small dog is about $1,314 and $1,035 for a cat, which includes health care, food and items such as leashes, carriers, toys and other things to make life easier for pets and their people.

In addition to basic costs, many pet aficionados enjoy feeding their dogs and cat elite pet foods, buying them clothing and even redoing their homes to accommodate them. Yet, one of the biggest concerns pet owners have is how their fur children fare when they are left alone at home during the day or for an extended period of time.

Amy Huchingson Taylor of Fort Worth, Texas, knows that concern all too well. She owns and operates Precious Paws Pet Sitting of Fort Worth, LLC. “My husband, before we were married, got me a little pug,” she says. “Her name was Samantha, and she was a little baby. We went on our honeymoon, and I hated leaving her, but my daddy and stepmom kept her. Then, two years later, when our son, Jackson, was born, we were going on a huge family trip with my stepmom’s family—20 people. We were going to Hawaii for seven days.

“There was no one to take care of Samantha.

“I thought, ‘Oh, my gosh. What am I going to do?’ Just the thought of having Sam in a kennel was the first time I’d thought, ‘That just can’t happen.’ I hired a pet sitter to take care of her. My mom and stepdad also looked in on her while we were gone.

“That’s how it got started.

“When we got back July 1, 2005, I started Precious Paws Pet Sitting. I wanted people to have an option so they don’t ever have to put their dogs in boarding, in a cage, ever, if they don’t want to.”

Taylor doesn’t advertise her business other than a web page on social media and a Facebook page clients often forward to friends, so she depends heavily on word-ofmouth to reach potential clients.

“I’ve been in business now for almost 11 years, and I’ve never lost a customer,” she says. “I have customers who have been with me since the beginning.”

The business is so well known and appreciated, that Precious Paws has been featured in the August 2014 issue of West FW Lifestyle magazine.

I always try to treat and love people unconditionally, the way I do animals.

Although a lifelong animal lover, Taylor hadn’t even considered the pet care business when she started college at Texas Tech University. She had always been interested in the medical field, so she pursued and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in human development and family studies with a specialization in addiction in 1991.

“I’ve never used my degree for that,” Taylor says. “When you’re in college, and I don’t know how it is today, but I should have explored more about what I wanted to do. When I was only a few hours short of graduating, I discovered that you then have to be an intern for a year, and you can’t earn money. That’s kind of why I never went that direction. To this day, though, I still read up on addiction.”

Taylor loved living in Lubbock and going to Texas Tech, noting that the time was among the very best years of her life.

“When I came back to Fort Worth, I went to work into telecommunications with AT&T for years.”

After five years of dating, she and her now-ex-husband married in April 2003.

The couple divorced in 2012.

Knowing she had to support herself, she opted to start the process of becoming a registered nurse, completing the prerequisite classes at UT Arlington.

“Just as I was about to enter nursing school, my pet-sitting business exploded,” she says. “It was like, ‘God, I thought you wanted me to be a nurse, but obviously, you want me to have this business.’ I couldn’t do both. I wasn’t willing to let my business go away because I had worked so hard to be where I was in Fort Worth. Finally, people knew me, and I had a name here and a reputation.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without my faith.”

PRECIOUS PAWS for a CAUSE Precious Paws for a Cause, 501c3, is Taylor’s newly-launched pet rescue. As president and director of operations for the charity, she focuses on taking care of pets in need and placing them in good homes. She plans to hire a staff and to create a no-kill shelter to save as many animals as possible, along with the help of foster families. Her immediate goals are to raise awareness in the Fort Worth community about the plight of many domestic animals and to raise money to care for them As this magazine was going to press, Taylor herself began fostering a rescued pit bull mix named Sugar, who will be with her until the dog can be adopted. When Taylor’s nonprofit had been made public for just two days, she already had raised $700.

Just being with animals all day and learning the unconditional love they have given you—I always try to add that to my relationships with humans.

Precious Paws continues to grow and thrive. In fact, Taylor notes that she’s had about an 400 percent increase in business in the past two or three years.

“For the past year-and-a-half, people kept saying to me, ‘I’m in Dallas all day, and I need someone to let my dog out.’ or ‘My dog needs a walk during the day,’” she says. “Now not only do I have my people who travel and need me morning, evening and weekends, but now I have this whole business from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. everyday where the people who work need me. I have up to 15, sometimes 18, people who need me between those hours that I service every day.”

Through the years, Taylor has learned a great deal about pet nutrition and health. She stays on top of news about products and contacts clients who use them if there is a recall of or a problem with a product.

Dependability and personal touches are partially what make Taylor so successful. She notes that her character is of utmost importance to her, and it is upon that belief she has built her business.

“She is more than dependable,” says Brad Smith, who has been a client for about a year. “Amy keeps us updated on what is going on, what went on, suggestions, etc. She goes beyond pet sitting to tending to matters at our house such as watering plants if we are away.

“I cannot imagine a better pet-sitting service out there. I travel a LOT. Often times, my travels are last-minute deals. I can send Amy a text to let her know when I need her, and it is like she is Superwoman. She has been there for me every time. She is awesome.”

As for his pet?

“Marley is a 5-year-old highly-trained and spoiled black Lab. He demands attention and will reward whoever gives it to him

with any number of tricks feats, etc. Marley loves to smile and will do so readily if he likes you. He smiles at Amy a lot!”

For Precious Paws, for most days, it’s business as usual, but every once in a while, something unexpected happens.

Taylor recalls a visit she made about eight years ago to a client’s home on Eagle Mountain Lake, which was full at the time.

It was Thanksgiving week and very cold and rainy with a strong wind making it even chillier.

“Hunter the chocolate Lab loves to swim and usually just got in the pool when he went outside,” she says. “This time, Hunter ran toward the lake, and I didn’t think too much about it. He jumped in and started swimming, and swimming and swimming.

He was swimming in a straight line out 50 yards, 100 yards and honestly, after that, I’m not sure how far he went. I completely freaked out. I ran out to the dock and ran to the end yelling at him, ‘Hunter! Hunter!’ He couldn’t hear me.

“This was only the second time I had worked for this man. In my head, I was thinking, ‘What am I going to do?’ I was a wreck and so scared. Hunter is not a small dog, and all I could think about was he is going to get tired and drown. I went to the jet ski—no keys. I started taking my coat off, my shoes as I was going to have to jump in this cold lake and swim to save this dog who weighs more than me! Just as I was about to jump in, Hunter turned around and started swimming back. It was the longest five minutes of my life at the time, and I started crying from relief that I did not have to call the owner and tell him his dog drowned.

“The next time I spoke to the owner, I told him the story, and we laughed. Even all these years later, I have anxiety thinking of this story again and am so thankful I can laugh about it.”

Taylor’s 11-year-old son, Jackson, has a role in the business, too.

Like his mother, he loves animals and often accompanies her to care for fur children after school or on weekends. He and his mother have four rescue cats, three foster cats and a female pug, Tempi, who is named after Dr. Temperance Brennan, a character on the TV show “Bones.”

“Jackson likes to go with me,” she says. “Now that he’s old enough, when he helps me, I pay him. Now he understands what has to happen to make money. It’s important, now that it’s just him and me, that he see what his mom has to do to to put a roof over our head and keep him in private school, all the things that kids just think are there because they don’t really know what it takes to get it there. It’s nice. He loves to take care of animals.”

Her son also has his own interests. He is on track to becoming an Eagle Scout, plays “every sport there is” and has a passion to become a Navy SEAL, just like his hero Chris Kyle, whom he met when Kyle visited the Taylors’ church, Fellowship Church Grapevine.

“This child wants to grow up to protect his country,” Taylor says. “He wants to graduate from Texas Tech and then join the military.

“We have a bond. We’re doing this whole life thing together, and it’s awesome. I literally wake up every day and say, ‘I don’t even work.’ This is my life, and I just don’t consider it work. I’m blessed to be able to do it, and I thank God for the business. I get to be with my son every day. I have so much flexibility that I literally have the best job. It’s a job, but I don’t feel like I work.”

In addition to spending time with Jackson, when asked what the best thing about her job is, Taylor pauses for a moment and then says, “Just being with animals all day and learning the unconditional love they have given you—I always try to add that to my relationships with humans. I always try to treat and love people unconditionally, the way I do animals.”

It was a cold, rainy day in Austin, but the 175 Red Raiders assembled in the State Capitol were anything but dreary. It was Texas Tech University System Day, and the mood of the day was upbeat, loud and Raider Proud.

The official Texas Tech party and their guests, as well as the delegation, visited legislators. The group included Texas Tech alumni from across the state and Texas Tech staff. Members of the Texas Tech Alumni Association, Student Alumni Board and the Student Government Association joined in to represent the Red Raiders.

During every state Legislative session, the system takes one day to celebrate its history, successes and very bright future. This March 4 was packed from early morning to early evening with a full schedule designed to promote Texas Tech to the elected officials who influence funding for higher education in the state of Texas.

The first item on the agenda was an official welcome from Chancellor Robert L. Duncan and greetings from each of the four presidents, M. Duane Nellis, Ph.D., Texas Tech University; Tedd Mitchell, M.D., Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center; Brian May, Ph.D., Angelo State University and Richard Lange, M.D., Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, El Paso. In addition to their welcoming remarks, the speakers stressed how important it is for the state of Texas to fund higher education adequately and how important Texas Tech’s role is in Texas’ success.

Immediately following, the delegation was recognized in the Texas House chambers and then on the Senate floor. The afternoon included a group photo taken in the Capitol Rotunda, and the Texas Tech faithful marched the halls of the Capitol calling on every House and Senate office. The purpose was to advocate for higher education funding and to deliver a special Texas Tech gift specifically designed for the occasion. The afternoon was topped off with a reception hosted by the Austin Chapter of the Texas Tech Alumni Association.

The Alumni Association wants to thank those volunteers who made the time to join us in Austin and helped us to “bear our banners far and wide” for a very important cause.

NEW campus on

While things for students slow a bit during summer months at Texas Tech, that’s not the case for campus improvements--they continue year-round. In the process, Texas Tech campus continues to evolve but remains undeniably stunning. For this issue, I chose to feature a few ongoing projects, two are brand new construction projects and two are older facilities that are being revitalized.

Check out the progress of the Bayer Plant Science Building as well as the TTU Innovation Hub and Research Park, located on 4th Street. The stadium seats at Jones AT&T Stadium were removed and will be replaced, and the plaza area surrounding the historic Dairy Barn has undergone n impressive transformation.

The growth and beautification of Raiderland is a neverending process.

The Bayer Plant Science building is nearing completion. If you read every issue of the Texas Techsan, you’ve been following the building’s progress. The Bayer Plant Science Building is a 21,122 square foot addition to the existing Plant Science Building. In addition to the new construction, 2,440 square feet of the original Plant Science Building is undergoing renovation. The building project, on which ground was broken April 2014, will be completed this summer.

The Bayer Seeds Innovation Center project is funding the current renovation of the existing 31,601 gross square foot building for Bayer CropScience administrative and research business functions. South of 9th Street, a new trait development facility and greenhouse will be constructed. This new facility will consist of a 12,812 gross square feet headhouse and a 31,020 square foot Venlo style greenhouse. The project includes a new pedestrian connection between the two facilities, along with a range of site and utility improvements. texastechalumni.org

Texas Tech Innovation Hub & Research Park This structure was designed with a lab-lease concept with private sector tenants in mind.

Construction began in September 2014 and will be completed this summer.

Phase One of the project includes the construction of a two-story 41,000 square foot research facility for start-up, incubator and private research users.

The university already has a lease agreement with the first tenant, Chromatin, an agbiotech company headquartered in Chicago that targets its research in areas such as water scarcity, increasing global demand for food and the limits on fertile land.

Chromatin will move its research and development team from Champaign, Ill., to Lubbock, creating approximately 12 jobs. The company already has seed operations offices in Lubbock and New Deal.

New Seating at Jones AT&T Stadium The lower bowl seating at Jones AT&T Stadium is being replaced with new seat units. This project also includes concrete repairs, a new concrete finish coating and seating structure improvements, which will provide a new fresh look to the interior bowl.

The Dairy Barn Plaza Space This recently completed area falls in line with true Spanish Renaissance Architecture, in which you see a lot of plazas, or outdoor relaxation and light recreation areas. The new tree shade canopy and lighting solution is effective in attracting students to the plaza space and has been successfully used as a mid-campus cross traffic pedestrian corridor. The entire plaza landscaping is nurtured by spray and sub-irrigation watering, creating a beautiful park space.

The College of Media & Communication at Texas Tech offers state-of-the-art instruction and facilities for programs at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree levels. The first journalism course was offered in the Department of English when the university opened its doors to students in 1925. ACCOLADES ★ In 2014 and 2009, The Ad Team placed 3rd and 6th in AAF National Student Advertising Competition. Students have won Lubbock ADDY Awards each of the last five years. Individual awards included 2013 Lone Star Emmy Award, “2014 Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges,” and AAF’s 2014 “Most Promising Multicultural Students.” Public Relations students were named PRWeek Student of the Year, a finalist for the MAIP internship and winner of a TPRA Silver Spur. Media strategies students placed in the Student Startup Madness and the Scripps International Innovator’s Cup. The Texas Tech Forensics Union remains a national contender, having won national championships in 2008 and 2010.

★ Invested in recruiting and retention. The college hired a full-time recruiter in 2012 and added a second in 2014. In Fall 2014, the college’s recruiting team visited 24 high school campuses. In Spring 2015, the recruiters visited 41 high schools.

★ Continue to expand and improve International Film Series. Since 2009, the college has hosted some 75 screenings of international feature films, panels and speakers. The Texas Tech University International Film Series IFS collaborates with Classical and Modern Languages & Literatures, Art, Human Development and Family Studies, Women’s Studies Program, History, Sowoon Arts and Heritage and the African American History Month Lecture Series.

★ Built campus and community partnerships with Center for Communication Research. CCR partnered with multiple entities external to CoMC on applied communication research projects including focus groups, continuous response testing and online surveys.

★ Continue to expand and improve Center for Communication Research. The center tripled research space in last three years to more than 6,000-square-feet of lab space with state-of-the art media research technologies. In Summer 2013, created new position of associate dean for research and grants.

★ Continue to expand and improve high-quality, diverse faculty. In Fall 2013, created a system to prioritize new hires at the college level and focus on opportunity hires in areas of university priorities.

★ Established research partnerships. I grew up on a farm in Chillicothe, Texas (population 798). I did not know many people when I went to college, so Texas Tech and its people just flowed into my life. My wife, best friends, my closest business relationships, my sister and my in-laws all went to Tech.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU’VE ENJOYED SEEING OCCUR RECENTLY AT TEXAS TECH? I love seeing the growth of the university both in size and reputation. It’s a truly exciting time to be a Red Raider!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BOOK? I read a lot of histories and biographies. “The Years of Lyndon Johnson” series by Robert Caro and the “Theodore Roosevelt Trilogy” by Edmund Morris are my favorites.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE? “For Love of the Game.”

WHAT ARE YOUR INTERESTS AND HOBBIES? I’m a long-term, die hard Texas Rangers season ticketholder, and we go out to the Ballpark pretty regularly. We also like to travel a lot, dine out and go to the movies regularly.

WHAT CHARACTER TRAIT DO YOU VALUE HIGHLY IN AN INDIVIDUAL? I always say that ideas, by themselves, are worthless. An idea only becomes valuable when someone goes out and turns the idea into reality.

I liked walking across Memorial Circle in between classes and always seeing a friendly face. Tech was just the right size. It was big enough to constantly meet new people, but small enough to have a friend in every class.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU’VE ENJOYED SEEING OCCUR RECENTLY AT TEXAS TECH? I’ve enjoyed seeing the growth of Texas Tech and how the new buildings flow beautifully into the original architecture of the campus.

I’ve enjoyed seeing the excitement and spirit of the students continue to remain strong. Texas Tech has grown and continued to improve over the past 15 years, but in many ways, the spirit of Raiderland has remained the same.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BOOK? I enjoy biographies and autobiographies. It’s enlightening to read about people’s ideas, beliefs and inspirations.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE? WHAT IS THE LAST MOVIE YOU SAW? The last movie I saw was “McFarland, USA.” It told a great and inspirational story.

My favorite movie is “Tombstone.” It doesn’t add much value to ones’ life, but it has some great quotes.

WHAT ARE YOUR INTERESTS AND HOBBIES? I love being with kids. I’ve served for years with After School Kids Community Bible Study. I find it encouraging to see young minds growing and learning. Any given day, you can find me playing outside with my boys. Our family enjoys skiing, hunting and traveling.

Men’s Tennis Duo Finishes National Runner-Up

Felipe Soares and Hugo Dojas ‘ incredible run through the NCAA Championships came to an end May 25 in Waco, Texas, as the tandem fell to No. 19 Texas’ Lloyd Glasspool and Soren Hess-Olesen in three sets (6-1, 3-6, 6-3) in the finale of the men’s doubles championship.

“Full congratulations to them,” Soares said, following the match. “They played very well. I wanted to win so bad, but unfortunately not this year.

Maybe next year.”

Behind strong serving by the program’s first-ever singles quarterfinal participant, Soares led the Red Raider comeback in the second set, 6-3, to extend the match to a third set after Texas jumped out to a 6-1 advantage in the first frame.

“We started the match really slow,” Dojas explained. “We just didn’t have much energy, didn’t serve, return or volley well, but we really picked it up in the second set, which carried over into a tough third.”

Prior to Monday’s match, Texas Tech had not been broken all tournament long nor had played a third set.

Nonetheless, the battle continued into the finale with the Red Raiders tying it back up at two games apiece following a major stand by Dojas on the service line.

However, the match came down to Soares on serve with Tech trailing 4-3. The Longhorns would go on to break serve and hold on for the win, 6-3 in the third, to clinch the national championship.

“It’s so tough when you’re this close,” Head Coach Tim Siegel said. “But I am so proud of our guys.

They had a great year: Top 20 team, beat the No. 1 team in the nation (Oklahoma) as a team. These two guys, though, they will be seniors next year, and they are really going to make Texas Tech proud. I’m already looking forward to it.”

The second-place finish marks the second time in the last three years that the Red Raiders have made an appearance in the tournament finale. Raony Carvalho and Gonzalo Escobar also finished runnerup in 2012 to Ohio State.

Texas Tech’s Amazing Run at NCAA Championships Comes to a Close Lady Raiders Record Highest Finish in Program History

When Texas Tech senior Stephanie Bertelsen sat around during the second rain delay of the NCAA San Antonio Regionals on May 9, she wondered if that day would be her last round of college golf, ending her two years at Tech after transferring from Western Texas College as a two-time All-American.

The Lady Raiders were five shots out of qualifying for the NCAA Championships on the final day, trailing rival Texas and leading medalist Bertine Strauss. Bertelsen was struggling, shooting 4-over and 3-over the first two days. Then she decided it shouldn’t be over.

“I wasn’t ready for it to end,” Bertelsen said. “We knew we could keep going and surprise some people.”

That round changed everything for Texas Tech, who went on to come back from five strokes down with three holes to play to tie for fifth at regionals.

The Lady Raiders then pushed through to make the 15-team cut and then the eight-team, match play portion of the NCAA Championships the week of May 25.

Five girls who played together for the first time as a team back in February and were ranked as low as 68 to start the season were now one of just eight teams remaining May 26 to play for a national championship.

“I want to say yes, I was thinking about it being possible (six months ago),” head coach JoJo Robertson said. “I think (this team) can do anything if they absolutely work hard and put their minds to it. But to actually be here and experience it—it’s the greatest thing to ever happen to our program and it’s been so much fun.”

The Texas Tech women’s golf team’s amazing run came to an end on May 26 at The Concession Golf Club as the Lady Raiders fell 4-1 to Duke in the NCAA Championships Match Play Quarterfinals.

Tech finishes tied for fifth overall—its best finish ever in a women’s golf national championship in only its second appearance in program history (1996).

“I know we didn’t play our best today,” Robertson added. “But knowing that we have four players re-

turning that have now already been here - I think they are going to do everything they can to try and do this again next year.”

Tech led four of the five matches early on with teams teeing off on No. 1 as junior Sarah Brown bounced back immediately after dropping her first hole to Lisa Maguire and Bertelsen won two of her first three holes to go 2 up on Sandy Choi. Brown would never trail again, winning 3 and 2 after a par on 15—bouncing back nicely after an 86 on Monday.

“I hit the ball really well,” Brown said. “Out here par is a great score, and that was our game plan from the start—we just wanted to hit the green, two putt and just make our pars. If you can make 18 pars out here you’re gonna win your match.”

But her win would go down as the only one for Tech in the first women’s match play championship as Duke turned its early four-match deficit around at the turn. Tech left the sixth hole up 4-1 but entered hole 14 down 3-1-1 as Annika Award winner and top-ranked amateur Leona Maguire won 5 and 4 against Tech freshman Gabby Barker.

Once freshman Lauren Mason fell 3 and 2 on the 16th and junior Kimmy Hill the same on 15, Choi was dormie (two up, with two to play) on the 17th green. Bertelsen conceded to end the quarterfinal.

As much as a fairy tale as it may have seemed at time for Lady Raider fans, the team bought into the philosophy and excitement with their coaches and made a run no Texas Tech women’s golf team had done before.

Tech left stroke play on May 25 with 530 birdies on the season—the most by any Division I team this season, while Barker tied Gabby Dominguez for the lowest round by a Tech golfer in a national championship after a 3-under 69 May 25 that elevated Tech into a tie for 6th to make match play. Her even par 72 was the fourth-lowest round by a Lady Raider while Bertelsen recorded the fifth lowest (73) and Mason the third-lowest with a 1-under 71 Monday.

Needless to say, it exceeded every expectation for Robertson.

“I really didn’t know what to expect this week,” she admitted. “But spending this much time with them and seeing them get to go through this has been so much fun.”

Texas Tech Fires 6-under 282, Misses Cut By One

Three Red Raiders Finish with 2-under 70s

No. 8 Tech (304-305-282--891) carded the tournament’s best team round on nine holes with a 6-under, 138 showing on its first nine May 31 (holes 10-18). Tech’s 6-under 282 was the second-lowest team round of the day so far (UCLA, 280) and second-lowest at an NCAA Championship for a Red Raider squad. Tech shot 12-under (276) in the third round at the 2013 Championships and 8-under (280) in 2010.

Freshmen Wes Artac and Mito Pereira along with sophomore Hannes Ronneblad all fired 2-under 70s along with senior Clement Sordet’s even par 72. Fellow senior Matias Dominguez finished up with a 9-over 81.

The Red Raiders had six birdies in the first four holes on counting scorecards to get to 3-under quickly, led by Pereira and Artac (two birds each).

Both players along with Sordet birdied the 545-yard, par-4 13th in different ways. Sordet and Pereira hit in 8-10 footers while Artac chipped in from the right side below the green after clearing it on his approach from the left.

Tech (+27) had to play the waiting game as teams finished up the afternoon rounds Sunday and then were suspended due to weather until 7 a.m.

ET June 1. The Red Raiders moved up 10 spots to 17th but were one shot behind Washington and SMU (+26) who tied for 15th. SMU would win in a two-hole playoff to advance to the fourth and final round of stroke play on June 1, which will decide the top eight for the match play quarterfinals.

Artac would bogey the 15th hole - his worst hole of the week (+4) - for a second straight day before rattling off seven consecutive pars before a birdie on the par-3, 6th. He would give up a stroke on seven then gain it back on eight with second birdie on the par 4 before just missing a birdie on No. 9.

Pereira made a strong start after back-to-back 79s the first two days with a birdie on the short, par-4 12th after driving the green and nearly sinking a long eagle from 50 feet. He scored three consecutive pars after a birdie on 13 and was one of only two Tech players to birdie the par-5, 17th on May 31. Pereira made the turn at 1-under and then birdied three holes to get as low as 4-under before bogeys on Nos. 7 and 9 to end his round.

Sordet and Ronneblad gave Tech a fighting chance in the end with each making 8-10 foot birdies on the ninth and final hole.

Ronneblad played some of his best golf on the first nine (10-18) with a 3-under 33. It was the only time all week that he played 10-18 at par or better (+1 first round, +4 second round). His only over par score came on a double bogey at the par-4, 5th.

John Scovell Named 2015 Distinguished Texan Club of Dallas Chapter has selected Scovell, a 1967 NFF National Scholar Athlete and former Texas Tech quarterback, for its highest honor.

The National Football Foundation (NFF) Gridiron Club of Dallas Chapter presented 1967 NFF National Scholar Athlete and former Texas Tech quarterback John Scovell with the 2015 Distinguished Texan Award at the chapter’s Seventh Annual Awards Banquet April 6 at the Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas.

“Over a long career, John Scovell has left an indelible mark on the game of college football,” said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. “He developed his leadership qualities on the field, quarterbacking the Texas Tech Red Raiders while being named an NFF National Scholar Athlete in 1967.

The lessons Scovell learned on the football field have contributed greatly to his business and civic leadership, which includes serving as a past chairman of the Cotton Bowl and currently as President & CEO of Woodbine Development Corporation. He is truly an embodiment of the good in the game of football, and we are extremely proud to honor him.”

The Distinguished Texan Award, the chapter’s most prestigious award, honors an outstanding person who has maintained a lifetime of interest in the game of football and has been a significant contributor to the betterment of the game.

Scovell joined Hunt Oil Company’s real estate division in 1972, and he founded Woodbine with Dallas businessman Ray L. Hunt in October 1973.

As president and CEO, Scovell leads the organizational support and direction on Woodbine’s building committee for all projects. Over the years, he has championed many commercial real estate projects in downtown Dallas, most notably the Hyatt Regency Dallas with its landmark Reunion Tower, which Woodbine has managed since it opened in 1978. Prior to joining Woodbine, Scovell was a certified public accountant with Arthur Andersen & Co. Scovell played quarterback at Texas Tech University from 1965-67, starting as a junior and senior under Coach J.T. King. Honored as Texas Tech’s first NFF National Scholar Athlete in 1967 for his combined performance on the field, in the classroom and in the community, he had many memorable moments as a Red Raider. In 1966, he led the team to the Upset of the Year when they knocked Arkansas out of the Cotton Bowl in the season finale, 21-16. A year later, Scovell rushed for 175 yards in a historic upset of Texas in Austin.

He graduated No. 1 in his class at Texas Tech’s College of Business in 1968 and received a prestigious NCAA postgraduate scholarship. He served in the U.S. Army Finance Corps. Scovell received his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1970.

A native of Dallas, Scovell attended Hillcrest High School where he was quarterback for the Panthers football team.

John is the son of longtime Dallas ambassador and Cotton Bowl Classic team selection chairman, the late Field Scovell, for whom the Cotton Bowl Trophy is named. John himself served as chairman of the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association from 1980-82, and he currently serves on its board of directors.

Scovell is a member of the Texas Tech University Foundation President’s Council and former member of the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents and the Texas Tech Alumni Association National Board of Directors. He has served many organizations as a president, chairman, board member or trustee, including Children’s Medical Center, Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau Expansion Committee, DowntownDallas, Greater Dallas Chamber of Commerce, JPMorgan Chase & Co., The Real Estate Council of Dallas Advisory Board and the State Fair of Texas.

In 2010, Scovell received the 81st annual Linz Award, one of the highest accolades bestowed in Dallas to an individual or married couple for community or humanitarian service.

He is a member of the Texas Tech Athletics Hall of Fame and a recipient of the Texas Tech University Distinguished Alumnus Award.

John and his wife, Diane have three sons who all lettered in football at Texas Tech: Field (1993-96), King (1998-2001) and Dupree (2000-03).

BOOKS ROBERT MOSES PEASLEE , an associate professor of journalism and electronic media in the

College of Media & Communication at Texas Tech, and ROBERT G. WEINER , a humanites librarian and liaison to the College of Visual & Performing Arts and Film Studies at Texas Tech, edited a book, “The Joker: A Serious Study of the Clown Prince of Crime.” The book features essays by scholars from a wide array of disciplines that look at the Joker through the lens of feature films, video games, comics, politics, magic and mysticism, psychology, animation, television, performance studies and philosophy. As the first book that examines the Joker as a complex cultural and cross-media phenomenon, this collection adds to our understanding of the role comic book and cinematic villains play in the world and the ways various media affect their interpretation. Connecting the Clown Prince of Crime to bodies of thought as divergent as Karl Marx and Friedrich Nietzsche, contributors demonstrate the frightening ways in which we get the monsters we need.

R. GAINES BATY (BBA Business Administration, ’73) ) Dallas, Texas, authored “Champion of the Barrio: The Legacy of Coach Buryl Baty.” The book is a biography of the junior Baty’s father (1924-1954), a winning athlete, coach, builder of men, and an early pioneer in the fight against bigotry. In 1950, Buryl Baty became head football coach at Bowie High School in El Paso, where he quickly inspired his athletes, all Mexican Americans from the Segundo Barrio, with his winning ways and his personal stand against the era’s extreme, deep-seated bigotry.

Just as the team was in a position to win a third district title in 1954, they were jolted by an unthinkable tragedy that turned their world upside down. In 2013, Buryl Baty was inducted posthumously into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame. R. Gaines founded and directs an executive search firm in Dallas, serving high-growth and Fortune 500 companies.

1975 KELLY BARNES (BBA Management)

Montgomery, Texas, is proud to announce that there are three generations of Red Raiders in his family, including parents, his daughter and his granddaughter. Barnes also has seven of 10 grandchildren enrolled in the Texas Tech Alumni Association’s Legacy Program. His wife is Susan.

1980 LANA LAWRENCE (BS Interior Design) Dallas, Texas, was recently appointed studio director at the design firm Interprise Design in Dallas. In this role she oversees the design studio and is responsible for staffing and scheduling of projects, quality

control and client service. She also will support Interprise’s mission, vision and values by collaborating with clients, leading and mentoring team members and providing resource management.

1984 STEVE BRUNSON (BBA Finance) Amarillo,

Texas, was promoted to executive vice president for First United Bank. Brunson has been with the bank since January 2014 and has 31 years experience in banking.

He serves as a commercial loan officer at the Amarillo Colonies Banking Center. His wife is Heather.

Texas, received the Ronald D. Secrest Outstanding Trial Lawyer Award from the Texas Bar Foundation. Each year, the

Texas Board Foundation honors those who exemplify the highest standards of the legal profession. This year’s award winners will be recognized at the 2015 Texas Bar Foundation Annual Dinner. His wife is BECKY SMITH LANIER (BS International Trade, ’86 MA Spanish).

1985 J. CURT LEONARD (BBA Finance) Irving, Texas, was named to the Barron’s 2015 “America’s Top 1,200 Advisors: State-byState” list. This national recognition in the banking and finance industry. Accomplishments include securing a $3 million judgment from a Texas state court on behalf of an investment adviser who brought a case against a private equity firm after advising on the acquisition of an oil and gas pipeline company and obtaining a favorable settlement for a high net worth client in a FINRA arbitration involving a complex options trading strategy. Outside of the courtroom, Cheek chairs the SFT Raffle for the State Fair of Texas (SFT)—the largest annual event in the state which provides close to a $1 million a year in scholarships for inner-city Dallas and rural Texas students attending in-state colleges and universities. He also chairs the Dallas Museum of Art’s Junior Associates and previously chaired its largest fundraiser, Affair of the Art. Heath is also on the Board of Directors for the Dallas Christian Legal Society. He is a member of the Texas Tech Alumni Association National Board of Directors. 2004 LEISA CLAYTON (BS Nursing, ’13 MS Nursing) San Angelo, Texas, has begun running a mobile clinic in West Texas called Blue Collar Health. Leisa developed the idea after learning about migrant workers before graduating from Texas Tech. After completing roughly a year of research with another graduate student, Leisa opened the clinic with her husband, Brandon. Blue Collar Health focuses mainly on companies and travels to different job sites. Services includes shots, stitches and check-ups.

Business) El Paso, Texas, a leasing agent with River Oaks Properties, Ltd., in El Paso, has been awarded the Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) designation by the CCIM Institute. The designation was awarded during the Institute’s Midyear business meetings March 24 in Chicago. Hector was among the 146 commercial real estate professionals who earned the designation by passing the CCIM Institute’s Comprehensive Examination, the final element in the designation process. This new group of CCIM designees hails from 35 U.S. states, one U.S. territory (Puerto Rico), Canada, and Mexico. one of the nation’s 12 up-and-coming engineering professionals in DiscoverE’s fourth annual New Faces of Engineering, College Edition. She was nominated for the honor by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).

The New Faces of Engineering recognizes students who display the vision, innovation and leadership skills necessary to build the foundation for a successful career in engineering.

Students honored also display excellence in the classroom, leadership in student organizations, outstanding communications skills and community service in non-engineering related fields.

graduate student CHLOE HONUM has been awarded the 2015 Bob Bush Memorial Award For First Book of Poetry from the Texas Institute of Letters for her book “The Tulip-Flame.”

Each year the Texas Institute of Letters awards more than $20,000 to recognize outstanding literary works in 12 categories.

Each award comes with a $1,000 prize Honum’s poems have appeared in journals including Poetry, The Paris Review and The Southern Review. She has been anthologized in Best New Poets 2008 and 2010.

“The Tulip-Flame” was published April 8, 2014, by the Cleveland State University Poetry Center. It won the 2013 Cleveland State University Poetry Center First Book Prize.

MELISSA LANGSTON , a graduate student in French, has received the fellowship from the DACOR Bacon House Foundation, an organization of foreign affairs professionals. Every year the foundation gives 11 $10,000 tuition-only fellowships to U.S. graduate students who are interested in a career in international service.

Department of Natural Resources Management, received the “Best Student Oral Presentation Award” at a meeting of the American Fisheries Society Arizona-New Mexico Chapter in February in Las Cruces, N.M. Roesler’s research was titled, “Assessing habitat-use patterns and survey methodologies of the endangered snail, Peco Assiminea, at Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge.” Pecos Assiminea is an endangered, semi-aquatic snail endemic to two spring systems located in eastern New Mexico and west Texas.

T H E A DVO C AC Y T E A M at the Texas Tech University School of Law captured the crown at the Fifth Annual National Energy & Sustainability Moot Court Competition hosted by West Virginia University. It is the 33rd national advocacy title for the school.

The team of KATHERINE HANDY , a third-year law student; STEPHANIE IBARRA , a second-year law student; and CLAY WATKINS , a second-year law student, took first place. This is the second time in the past three years Texas Tech has won the competition.

According to the School of Law, Handy became the first three-time national moot court champion in the school’s history.

The judges said it was simple but full of flavor.
