To Bill Dean Bill, I thoroughly enjoyed Jean Ann Cantore’s article about you in the latest Texas Techsan, especially the part about the Lubbock Hubbers semi-pro baseball team. My first real job came about when I was eleven years old, the time I sold peanuts and popcorn at baseball games for the Lubbock Hubbers. Unfortunately, in mid-summer of 1956 the team folded, and I lost that good job.

In 1955 I saw lots of the Lubbock Hubbers’ games just as an avid fan and even learned the players’ names. My favorite player was the left fielder, Bobby Fernandez. He had one of the best batting averages in the West Texas-New Mexico League.

You will enjoy seeing the attachments that I collected from the Hubbers’ 1955 season.

After 40 Years... you know, I announced my plans to retire as president and CEO of the Texas Tech Alumni Association at the end of this year.

I joined the association staff in July 1978, and it has been a wonderful 40 years. Like anything else, there have been ups and downs. But the positives far outweigh the negatives, and I am indebted to so many staff members and board members who have given me their support over the years.

When I first became director of the association, Cecil Mackey, Ph.D., who recently passed away, was Texas Tech’s president. Apparently, he had made overtures to our board about moving the board under the Office of Development. Our board, along with the director, Wayne James, resisted that change. It became a moot point when Mackey left Tech to become president at Michigan State. There he proposed the idea, and it met great resistance.

The end result was a bloody war with Michigan State alumni split down the middle. I guess I should be thankful he left Texas Tech when he did.

I have served under nine presidents and interim presidents and four chancellors. There have also been nine vice chancellors for institutional advancement and seven athletic directors during my time in this job.

During my tenure, Texas Tech joined the Big 12 Conference and became a system that now includes Angelo State University and the Health Sciences Center, which includes campuses in Lubbock, Amarillo, Odessa, Dallas and a separate medical school in El Paso. In addition, two years ago Texas Tech was listed among the nation’s top doctoral universities in the latest Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Of the 115 universities listed in the Highest Research Activity category, Texas Tech is one of 81 public institutions in the top tier.

We have been fortunate in that we have been able to maintain a very healthy and positive relationship with the Texas Tech Administration, the Office of Institutional Advancement and the Athletic Department.

Our boards have been the driving force behind major expansion of our facilities. In 1995, we expanded the Old President’s Home (4,082 square feet) by adding 8,001 square feet. The building was named the Merket Alumni Center thanks to a generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Merket of Tyler.

We changed the name from The Ex-Students Association back to the Texas Tech Alumni Association when we celebrated our 75th anniversary and formally dedicated The Merket Alumni Center.

In 1997 the board adopted a recommendation from Regent Jim Sowell to build what became known as the Frazier Alumni Pavilion, a 10,500-squarefoot facility. David Frazier of Dallas gave the lead gift for the facility and the plaza surrounding it. Our board has voted to expand the Frazier and fundraising is underway.

In 2008, we added 1,840 square feet to provide space for our accounting department.

Finally, in 2011 the board approved another expansion to the Merket Alumni Center. We added 11,650 square feet, and the building was renamed the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center, thanks to the generosity of Barbara and Mickey McKenzie of Sulphur Springs. This included a new courtyard (8,900 square feet) on the east side to go along with the existing courtyard (5,000 square feet) on the south side.

It has been my great joy to have worked with many great staff members who have made it all happen.

The late Peggy Pearce dramatically improved our Distinguished Alumni program and the Matador Evening, which was originally called the Century Club Dinner. Jaryn Kilmer and now Britta Tye have picked up where Peggy left off in producing two big highlight evenings for TTAA and Texas Tech.

Over the years, we have built a very solid chapter program under the leadership of Jim Douglass. We currently have 48 chapters in Texas and 30 out-ofstate. The chapter program has changed over the years. In the larger cities, we no longer have a big banquet every summer. The emphasis is on networking events, community service activities, golf tournaments, happy hours and game watching parties. In the small towns and cities, we still have the traditional annual dinner. The chapter program is a friendraising program in which we bring the message to these chapters and try to get them involved in various areas of support. Dayme Walther, a long-time field representative, now heads up this program, as Jim has become vice president of development.

I continually get positive comments about our first class magazine. I hired Marsha Gustafson shortly after I took this job, and she edited the magazine for 20 years. Jean Ann Cantore, the current editor, has been at the helm now for 19 years. She works with Jennifer Ritz, associate editor, to produce the publication six times annually. These individuals have constantly upgraded the quality of the magazine and made every effort to make it an all-inclusive magazine, both in print and online.

The scholarship wing of the association is the Texas Tech Alumni Association Endowment Trust fund. At the end of 2017, the Endowment Trust had a balance of $10,739,117. Scholarships are awarded out of the interest earned in the trust in three ways: (1) designated scholarships established by individuals or academic units for a specific purpose, (2) undesignated scholarships that we award based on merit or need and (3) scholarships given by chapters through the trust.

Chris Snead heads up our scholarship program as well as the maintenance of our facilities and our relationship with Top Tier Catering. Over the years he has worn many hats, starting as a West Texas field representative and moving steadily until his present position as a vice president. Thanks to Chris, our scholarship program is better organized and much more visible than any time in the past. All you have to do is walk through the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center, and you can see the outstanding work he has done with our facilities.

Brent Ross, who fought a long hard battle with cancer and passed last September, headed up our marketing efforts for 14 years. He really grew in that job. His efforts have produced affinity programs and sponsorships that have given us additional income for our many programs. Brent provided our administrative team with something that every administrative team needs—constructive criticism. He was not a “rubber stamp guy.” He constantly challenged us to rethink our positions and come up with better ideas.

Kristina Butler, who spearheaded the rebranding campaign that has produced a new logo and a new marketing approach, now fills his position as a vice president. Another great asset to the marketing team is Brett Winegarner, who took Kristina’s former position as director of communications.

We have steadily increased annual giving and the number of annual givers, but face challenges in the future as alumni giving nationally has dropped to 7 percent, and our numbers have been flat the last few years. Laura Bixler, our membership director, is a very creative person and works extremely hard at increasing our membership numbers. In recent years, Laura has formed partnerships with the Military Veterans Chapter and the Rawls Raiders. We have

had partnership agreements with the Black Alumni Association and Raiders Rojos for some time.

The Ring Program began in 1998 and has grown and prospered under Mandy Wiley, director of affinity programs. Last year, we sold 2,059 rings and had to expand the Ring Ceremony to four evenings to accommodate overflow crowds.

One of the long-timers here is our printing and mailing director, Don Johnston. Don always smiles and always gets the job done, even when he doesn’t receive materials on schedule from others. He is as solid as a rock, and I really appreciate his hard work and loyalty.

David Low is our chief financial officer, but he is much more than that.

David is involved in every aspect of our operations, whether it be membership, marketing or maintenance. He runs a smooth accounting department that produces unqualified audits every year. In addition, he pitches in and helps in the chapter program, the membership program and especially game days in the fall at the Frazier Alumni Pavilion.

All this is to say that whatever success I have had in this job it is because of a great team that has consistently over-performed and, in doing so, made me look good.

I also want to thank John Sims, who has served pro bono as our attorney since 1980. He has rendered our association invaluable assistance. It would be impossible to put a price on his contributions to the association, but the number would be in the six-figure range.

Finally, a huge thank you to those thousands of you who have continued to support the Texas Tech Alumni Association with your memberships and your hard work.

PEOPLE TEXAS TECH CHESS COACH ALEX ONISCHUK, HAS BEEN INDUCTED INTO THE U.S. CHESS HALL OF FAME FOR HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE GAME BOTH AS A PLAYER AND A COACH. The induction ceremony took place on April 17, at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art. He received a plaque bearing his image and biography. Onischuk became an international grandmaster, the highestranking title in chess, at only 19. He has been one of the top 100 players in the world for 20 consecutive years and competed in six straight Chess World Cup competitions. He won the U.S. Championship in 2006 and has competed on six elite U.S. Olympiad teams, leading the U.S. to a gold medal in the 2013 Pan-American Continental Championship. In 2014, Onischuk was recognized as Grandmaster of the Year by the U.S. Chess Federation.

MICHAEL LATHAM, PH.D., AN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY & BIOCHEMISTRY AT TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY, HAS RECEIVED AN $850,876 GRANT FROM THE CANCER PREVENTION AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF TEXAS (CPRIT) TO STUDY A PROTEIN COMPLEX’S ROLE IN REPAIRING DAMAGED DNA. Research is focused on the protein complex Mre11-Rad50 (MR), which recognizes and begins the process of fixing breaks in our DNA. The CPRIT grant will fund Latham’s research on how MR archives these complex activities. Latham said MR is important to study because random mutations of the complex have been found in certain types of cancer, including breast, ovarian and colorectal cancers.

JEREMY MARSTON, PH.D., AN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY’S DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING IN THE EDWARD E. WHITACRE JR. COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, RECEIVED THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION’S CAREER AWARD FOR HIS WORK WITH NEEDLE-FREE INJECTIONS. The CAREER award is the most prestigious award in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through research, education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations. It also comes with a monetary grant, of which Marston received $500,000. Marston and his team’s work also could help save the U.S. billions of dollars in accidental needle-stick injuries as well as help stop the reuse of hypodermic needles in developing nations.

THE RAWLS COLLEGE OF BUSINESS RECOGNIZED FOUR ALUMNI FOR THEIR PROVEN LEADERSHIP IN THE COMMUNITY AND AS OUTSTANDING PROFESSIONALS IN THEIR RESPECTIVE CAREERS. THE 2018 HONOREES WERE MICHAEL A. HITT, PH.D., is a university distinguished professor emeritus of the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University. He received his bachelor of business administration in 1968 and master of business administration in 1969, both from the Rawls College of Business. He is a leading management scholar with a career that spans more than 40 years as a teacher and researcher. Among his many recognitions, Hitt has received the Irwin Outstanding Educator Award, the Distinguished Service Award and the Distinguished Educator Award from the Academy of Management.

DUANE IRELAND, PH.D., is the executive associate dean at the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1969, and master’s and doctoral degrees in 1971, all from the Rawls College of Business. In addition to the numerous academic articles he has published, Ireland has authored or co-authored nearly 30 books in the field of management. He is actively involved in the Academy of Management and served as the 69th president in 2014. He is a fellow of the Academy of Management and a fellow of the Strategic Management Society.

MATTHEW E. MALOUF graduated with his bachelor of business administration from the Rawls College of Business in 1974 and is the owner of Malouf Interests, Inc. Before moving to Dallas in 1995, he worked at his family’s clothing store in Lubbock for many years, helping make it one of the nation’s premier retail establishments. Seeking a change after 30 years in retail, Malouf moved to Dallas to start Malouf Interests, Inc., a real estate development company. Since then, Malouf has developed more than 130 retail, office and medical projects in 12 states. In December, he broke ground on a landmark project, the Gabriella, mixed use/high rise development adjacent to Dallas’ Central Business District.

DAN POPE is the current mayor of Lubbock. He received his bachelor of business administration from the Rawls College of Business in 1985.

After graduation, Pope worked for Xerox Corporation in Midland, Austin and Nashville. He returned to Lubbock in 1994 and founded Benchmark Business Solutions, which he built into the most successful Xerox agent/ dealer in the United States. Pope was elected mayor of Lubbock in 2016. He serves as the chief development officer of Covenant Health System, where his responsibilities include philanthropy leadership. He also serves on the board of directors for Tyler Technology.

On April 20, Lyndi Starr, a senior agricultural communications major from Mount Vernon, Texas, was named the Masked Rider for the 2018-19 academic year. Since transferring to Texas Tech in 2016, Starr has been a member of the Ranch Horse Team, the Equestrian Team and the Horse Judging Team and has served as the on-site resident for the Texas Tech Equestrian Center. As the 57th Masked Rider, Starr said she will use her skills as an agricultural communications major to continue cultivating a relationship with the public in person and online via social media. She also hopes to be a positive role model and leader to those who aspire to wear the mask and cape. The previous masked rider was Laurie Tolboom.

Texas Tech University students Hanna Brainard of White Deer, Texas, and James Ray of Canyon, Texas, were revealed on April 20 as the students who served as the Raider Red mascot for the 2017-18 academic year. The two were revealed at the annual Passing of the Guns ceremony in the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center. Brainard, a senior restaurant, hotel and institutional management major, and Ray, a senior natural resources management major, along with their assistants, attended on-campus events and made appearances at schools, fundraisers and civic events in the Lubbock community. Raider Red also traveled far past city limits, visiting the new Texas Tech campus in Costa Rica at Christmas and joining the basketball team during March Madness as they made their way to an NCAA Elite 8 appearance.

through the arches TEXAS TECH’S MILITARY & VETERAN PROGRAMS AND THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT ON MARCH 30 HOSTED A MEDAL OF HONOR MEMORIAL DEDICATION CEREMONY AND PLAQUE UNVEILING POSTHUMOUSLY HONORING TWO RECIPIENTS. The event included music from the Texas Tech Brass Ensemble and remarks from several local leaders honoring HERMAN WALLACE , who served in the U.S. Army as a private first class during World War II, and GEORGE O’BRIEN , who served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. Phil Crenshaw, the last living chaplain’s assistant from World War II, delivered the ceremony invocation. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center President Tedd Mitchell, M.D., delivered the Medal of Honor citation narratives.

Wallace attended Texas Tech as a freshman in 1942-43 before joining the U.S. Army in June 1943. He was killed in action on Feb. 27, 1945, while helping clear enemy mines on a road near Prumzurlay in western Germany. After stepping on a well-concealed antipersonnel mine, he deliberately placed his other foot on the mine to keep it from being thrown upward and spraying other squad members with shrapnel.

O’Brien first served as a seaman in the U.S. Merchant Marines before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps in July 1949 while attending Texas Tech. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology in May 1950 and was ordered to active duty in 1951. On Oct. 27, 1952, he spearheaded the capture of an enemy-held hill. Though wounded and thrown to the ground by gunfire, he stood up and continued to lead his men, pausing only to help other wounded marines. Exactly one year later, he was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

You’d waited through the bitter cold winter months—marching to and from class in numbing cold—wishing for warmer days.

Then March burst onto the scene, the temperatures began to rise, along with your hopes for days warm enough to ditch the jackets and sweatshirts. Spring Break was around the corner, right?

The warm days came, but so did the wind. And the sand. And at the end of a day’s worth of classes, you were literally dirty.

But then, then, your hopes switched to those spring days when the wind backed off—and you were sometimes rewarded with the most gorgeous weather on the most gorgeous campus.

That was my thinking when I created this pictorial and asked O’Jay Barbee to capture campus in spring. I hope these photos help some readers recall those salad days. Because while we grow older, our campus remains a beautiful fixture on the landscape of West Texas—regardless of what a tempestuous Mother Nature throws at us.

There are always brighter days to come…

William Ward Watkin was Texas Tech’s original design architect. He began working on the campus master plan in 1924. Watkin can be credited for the use of the Spanish architectural style, known as Plateresque, meaning “in the manner of a silversmith.”

Originating in Spain and its territories in the 15th and 16th centuries, the Plateresque style, or estilo plateresco, architecture was based on the elaborate silver jewelry of the era. Texas Tech was the first university in the United States to adopt this style of architecture, known as a “first vernacular,” meaning the design was taken directly from Europe, not from another university or college already in existence.

Worth noting in the original design is Memorial Circle. Watkins intentions were for visitors to be able to see straight across the circle from four different points. For example, if one stands in the arch of the Administration Building, facing north, he or she can see all the way across Memorial Circle to the Engineering Key. Or, if one stands on the steps of the Geosciences Building (where the Carol of Lights festivities commence) and faces east, he or she can see not only to the main entrance of campus, but all the way down Broadway Avenue to downtown.

A waning moon leaves an India ink sky that boasts a brilliant spray of stars. At this early hour, this area of town is vacant of cars and noise and activity. A silent, gentle breeze blows, chasing chilly, arid air across a deserted parking lot and through a two-foot opening under an overhead door.

The crisp air stalls upon meeting the wall of scorching heat in the building—it’s 119 degrees and fires are blazing. The divine perfume of wood smoke permeates the space where brisket, ribs and pork butts are going from ordinary to extraordinary. Inside this inferno are three pit men who keep the smoke rolling in order to provide their patrons with some of the state’s best grub.

Two of Evie Mae’s three pit men are recent Tech graduates: Derek Correa graduated in 2017 with a bachelor of science in interdisciplinary agriculture, and Joe Rodriguez graduated in 2016 with a bachelor of science in exercise and sports science.

Not only are they responsible for turning out five-star fare, they’re passionate about their work. And, considering their brisket-smoking method takes 17-21 hours, this labor of love requires focus and dedication. If you know anything about barbecue, you know the guys behind the pits are the stars of the show. Their knowledge and dedication turn meat into something magical.

Evie Mae’s is open Wednesday-Saturday from 11 a.m. until they tape their hand-written “sold out” sign on the front door. The briskets go on the pits the afternoon prior to being served. Most days Rodriguez arrives at 2:30 a.m. to tend to the fires and meat, and Correa arrives around 8 or 9 a.m. and stays until after 8 p.m.

Author’s note: I held two photo shoots for this story: one at 4 a.m. on a Saturday, the second at 10 a.m. on a Friday. Let me tell you, rolling out of bed at 3 a.m. on a Saturday was not what I would call super awesome. My youngest son is almost 9, so I’m well past having to regularly wake at that hour—but I sucked it up because I love telling stories about our alumni. John Weast, my photographer, and I met at Evie Mae’s to find the three pit men working like a well-oiled machine. They were wrapping briskets, loading ribs onto the rotisserie smoker and listening to their favorite tunes. The men say they enjoy this peace and quiet before the Saturday crowds descend.

The experience was unforgettable, mostly because I had a double epiphany: 1) these guys work unbelievable hours and they work so hard; 2) superb barbecue is extremely labor intensive. These two Red Raiders may be young, but they really do make it happen—and they make it happen at one of Texas’ Top 10 BBQ destinations.

Rodriguez is the newest addition to the team, having started at Evie Mae’s in May 2017. Prior to that, Correa, who started in January 2017, worked the earlier shift. Correa had never worked a job that required such an early start time.

“Well, that’s when I figured, man, this must be serious stuff,” says Correa upon learning he would be arriving at work at such an early hour. “But now that we have Joe with us, now there are three of us (including additional pit crew member, Nathan Pier) with three different schedules. So this morning, I got here at 9 o’clock, but I probably won’t leave here until 8 o’clock tonight.”

The exception to the regular schedule is Saturday, when all three pit men arrive early—the middle of the night to most of us—to prepare for the weekend crowd that begins lining up outside shortly after 10 a.m.

Both Correa and Rodriguez are young to be in such a trusted position. They both recognize the faith owners Arnis and Mallory Robbins have placed in them.

“There’s not a top barbecue place in Texas where you could walk in and have the owner tell you all of his secrets,” says Correa in reference to Arnis teaching him how to trim and smoke brisket, ribs and turkey flawlessly.

Arnis admits the thought of divulging his secrets was, at first glance, a struggle. But after manning a burgeoning business with only a few hours of downtime a day, along came the couple’s second baby, Jack, in 2016, just days after Evie Mae’s storefront opened. The realization hit: Evie Mae’s was getting too busy to continue running alone.

“My initial thoughts were, ‘I don’t want to show someone how to do this, I don’t want to give away my secrets,’” he says. “But burnout will make you do things you never thought you’d do. I knew if I didn’t get help, quality would suffer. That was the fork in the road that made me hire someone. I knew, before I hired the first guy (Pier) I didn’t want to hire someone who had any experience, even as a backyard guru. I didn’t want someone coming in and telling me, ‘This is how I do it.’ I had my process and had reached some level of success in the business and didn’t plan to change that. Once I hired that first guy, I said, ‘This is incredible. We’re able to do more.’ And from that point, Derek was the second guy I’d hired.”

He then added Rodriguez, and also has a meat trimmer and sausage maker, Chris Mendiola, who worked in the meat lab at Texas Tech and completed his bachelor’s in animal science in May. He also hired a man in charge of seasoning all of the meat.

Arnis is exacting in his specifications for meat preparation, and he was just as exacting when training Correa and Rodriguez. The Robbins use only prime brisket. Prime is the highest U.S.D.A. grade of beef due to several factors, one of which is greater marbling in the meat—marbling refers to the flecks of fat visible in whole cuts of beef. Abundant marbling means tastier, more tender meat as well as a higher-grading carcass. It also means the meat is less likely to be dry.

Briskets are expertly trimmed, and the trimmings are used for the housemade sausage. As for wood, it’s post oak.

If you’re not a Texas barbecue aficionado, you may be wondering: What’s all the fuss about the brisket?

Well, while barbecue is most definitely a southern thing, styles vary greatly from state to state, even region to region. States south of the MasonDixon line are known for their own versions: some use rubs; some use sauces, which vary by region from white to mustard to tomato-based; favorite meats vary, but usually involve pork.

But Texas isn’t a southern state. We’re not the Southwest. We’re Texas, and we do things our own way. The No. 1 barbecue item here is beef— specifically, brisket. Creating the ideal smoked brisket is time consuming and requires an abundance of knowledge. If a barbecue restaurant can’t perfect brisket, the Lone Star state’s BBQ connoisseurs will judge it swiftly and harshly.

Brisket is a big deal.

While the process of cooking meat over fire or coals is a centuries’ old method, smoking meat takes that simple method to another level. Smoking, the process of cooking meat with indirect heat and smoke, is a superior cooking method when tenderness and flavor matter. This is where the term “low and slow” is used. This preparation method didn’t originate in Texas, of course.

But the art of smoking brisket? That was perfected in Texas.

Derek Correa `17 “I never, never could’ve imagined I would be doing this kind of work,” says Correa. “But I love it. I love it.

I have a real passion for this.”

Spend a few minutes around him while he’s working, and his dedication to his job is obvious. He’s energized, light on his feet and very eager to show off the work he does—and he should be.

Correa grew up in the deep South Texas town of Lyford. His mother teaches pre-kindergarten and his father is an agricultural science teacher. Correa grew up active in FFA and was a star baseball player in high school. Growing up in South Texas, with its proximity to College Station, many prospective college students are drawn to Texas A&M. He thought he’d attend college at Texas A&M as well.

“I’ve still got to paint the walls in my old bedroom at home,” says Correa with a wry grin. “They’re maroon.”

The summer prior to his senior year in high school, Correa attended the Texas FFA State Convention in Lubbock. This allowed him to become familiar with the campus and some of the professors—Scott Burris, Ph.D., and Rudy Ritz, Ed.D.—in the Department of Agricultural Education & Communications in the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources.

“I loved the two agriculture schools in Texas (Texas Tech and Texas A&M),” says Correa. “But, of course, being closer to A&M, and my dad having bought a lot of animals (livestock) near the College Station area, that’s where I grew up. A lot of his ex-students went there, and so I was very influenced by that. And then, going into my senior year, like I said, we came up here (to Lubbock). And my dad said I’d been to Lubbock before, but probably when I was five or six.

“And when I got up here—I already knew A&M’s atmosphere—but when I got up here, I thought, man, this reminds me of home. It’s open, not too congested.

And Dr. Ritz and Dr. Burris gave me a little tour. I remember, after that day, I told my dad, ‘I’m coming here to Lubbock.’”

Correa started as an agricultural economics major, then had a change of heart. After completing his first semester, while helping his parents sort through items from their former home, he found a piece of artwork he’d completed as a kindergartner. It was one of the forms thoughtful teachers have their pint-size students fill out: name, favorite color, favorite food, etc.

“At the bottom (of the page) it said, ‘What I want to be when I grow up,’” recalls Correa. “It said, ‘An ag teacher.’ I’ll never forget that moment.”

Correa pivoted on his college plans, and contacted Ritz, who became his new adviser, in order to change

his major to interdisciplinary agriculture. Part of completing his degree required a semester of student teaching. He chose to teach in Eldorado, Texas, south of San Angelo. Although he loved teaching and planned to be an ag teacher after graduating, fate had a different plan for him.

“It’s crazy,” notes Correa about how he started working at Evie Mae’s. “I started here that spring semester before I graduated.”

A friend of Correa’s had landed a job at Evie Mae’s. He informed Correa that his boss was looking for someone who could trim briskets.

“I’d heard of Evie Mae’s,” Correa says. “My mom had told me, ‘You need to go try this Evie Mae’s. I saw it on the Texas Bucket List, on the TV show.’ But, I still hadn’t come out here (to Evie Mae’s in Wolfforth).”

Correa thought he’d give it a shot. He had experience in every aspect of the meats industry since he’d worked two years with Raider Red Meats in the Department of Animal & Food Sciences. Working as a meat cutter for the Robbins was a perfect fit—and Arnis was elated to hire someone who already knew his way around a knife.

“Arnis was teaching me all the trimming methods and everything,” Correa says. “We’re really precise on how we do it, and it takes a lot of time. And then a couple weeks after that, he asked how my schedule was and he asked me, ‘Well, do you want to start learning the entire process?’”

Correa, both surprised and excited, immediately accepted the offer.

“Arnis told me, ‘Don’t be afraid to ask a million questions,’” a smiling Correa says. “I said, ‘Oh, no, I’ll ask you a million and one.’ He says, “Okay, I’m going to show you everything I know.’”

At the time Correa began working the pits, the Texas Monthly 2017 Top 50 list hadn’t been selected. Nevertheless, Correa knew

Arnis was putting a lot of faith in him—by training Correa, Arnis was sharing his secrets.

“Now, with them being No. 9 in the state and the only top-10 in West Texas, it would be hard for someone to come in and ask how it’s done,” he says. “If they wanted to come here to Evie Mae’s, or they wanted to go to Franklin’s in Austin, or Snow’s Barbecue, it’s impossible for them to go and ask the pit master, ‘Tell me everything. Show me all your secrets, everything.’ You know what I mean?”

And today, about 18 months into his job, he’s a bit of a walking encyclopedia where smoking meat is concerned.

“There really is a science behind it, and there really is no B.S.-ing your way through it,” he says. “Now, I could tell you how the weather’s going to be today. I can tell you the humidity, what it’s going to be today. But I have to know in advance: the weather, the humidity, the wood. I need to know what to do if we get some green wood, or some wet wood. Like I said, there are so many variables. It’s unreal.”

If you can name a scenario, Correa has considered it, likely lived through it and dealt with it. He’s lost about 27 pounds since starting the job, owing to working in heat that varies from 119 to as high as 134 degrees. But that’s not a deterrent. He has plans to someday move back to South Texas and open his own barbecue place, noting he’ll cater it to his own Mexican culture, probably adding a few side dishes and definitely including barbacoa.

But for now, he’s soaking in everything he can from his time at Evie Mae’s. He’s enjoying an unorthodox job—after all, how many 23-year-olds can brag that they’re pitmasters at a No. 9 barbecue joint—that also pays him a highly competitive salary for a 23-year-old.

Joe Rodriguez `16 “In my family, we have this big Tech-U.T. (University of Texas) rivalry,” says Rodriguez. “It’s been going on for a little over 60 years. I wanted to go to Tech, because people in this part of Texas are Tech fans. I thought it would be pretty cool to become an alum and keep the rivalry going.”

He was always a sports fan, in particular football, which he enjoyed playing and watching with his father, who still lives in Idalou. His love of sports led him to major in exercise and sports science.

“In Idalou, being a small town, football was always a big part of the culture,” Rodriguez says, who played offensive left tackle for the Idalou Wildcats. In 2010, his senior year, Rodriguez’ team won the football Class 2A Division II State Championship.

“I played baseball for a while, but once I hit high school, I only played football and threw the shot and discus in track.”

When Rodriguez was working his way through Tech, he says he held a variety of jobs.

“I used to work at the feedyard here in Lubbock,” he says.

“I worked there while I was going to school. I did a little bit of cowboying, a little bit of night man work when shipments of cattle would come in late.”

He also worked several years in the produce department for United Supermarkets, arriving at work at 4:30 a.m. His college jobs had nothing to do with his major, and he planned to work in a job related to sports science. However, it turned out the feedlot job—working around beef cattle—and the produce job at United—working with food—loosely tied in with his current work as a pit man at Evie Mae’s.

Rodriguez discovered Evie Mae’s shortly after they opened in 2016, while he was completing an internship at the University Medical Center Cardiac Rehabilitation center.

“I loved my internship,” he says. “I loved the clients, the people I had to work with. It was just overall a very good experience. That’s what I was really holding out for after I graduated.

But, because there are only two cardiac rehab clinics in Lubbock—UMC and Covenant—there aren’t many on staff at either place, so there aren’t a lot of job openings. I was at the point where I was waiting for something to open up, and also trying to decide if I wanted to move to a different town like Dallas or Fort Worth.

“I had started eating here (at Evie Mae’s) during my internship at cardiac rehab,” Rodriguez says. “This was my favorite place. Then I graduated, and I worked some small jobs for a little while. One day, when I was eating lunch here, I found out they were hiring. It just turned out that I needed a second job. I thought, ‘Well, might as well apply. It can’t hurt.’

“I love barbecue, so I figured working here would be a win-win. I was hired as a busboy. Within a few hours on my first day, they had me back in the pit room. I’ve been back there ever since. So, I was technically a busboy for less than a day.”

Like his co-worker Correa, Rodriguez says he never envisioned himself working in a restaurant.

“I kind of fell in love with this over here,” he says. “That’s one reason I applied. I always liked barbecuing at home, too, but I never thought I’d be doing

it on this kind of scale. I never thought I’d be doing 50 briskets in a day.”

Rodriguez estimates that since starting with Evie Mae’s, he’s smoked thousands of briskets. The pit men put on a different number of briskets every day to accommodate the estimated crowd, with Saturday being the peak day with around 70 briskets. Then the men also have to handle preparing the catering orders as well, which ratchets up the number. More than 700 briskets roll through Evie Mae’s every month.

Rodriguez has been a quick study.

“It took me probably two to three months to really get stuff down,” Rodriguez notes. “It’s still, to this day, a learning process, just because so many different things go into it. Between the weather, the wood, the meat—the meat plays a big part.

Here this week, we’ve been having a lot of smaller briskets.

Those cook at a lot higher rate and a lot quicker than bigger ones. Then the weather also factors in. Yesterday was super humid. For some reason, the humidity speeds things up, but it also helps the meat at the same time. The more moisture you can have in there in the smoke chamber, the more moist the meat is going to be. The wood also plays a big factor. Probably a month ago, we had some really green wood. It was a hassle because it would slow you down, because you’re constantly having to mess with it and turn logs, it doesn’t burn as well. This recent wood that we got is really well-seasoned, so it holds the temperature a lot more consistently than any kind of green wood.”

Rodriguez says it’s the details that make the difference. One of those details is having someone to man the pits to ensure the meat is cooking properly. Since he’s the newest hire, he works the earliest shift, starting at 2:30 a.m. Fortunately, Rodriguez

says he loves the early work hours and says he’s never been big on sleep, often getting by on four or five hours a night.

“Coffee,” he remarks. “Coffee is a big thing. I always drank coffee, but now it’s a must.”

There are benefits to working odd hours. He has more time to travel, and whether it’s to visit his mother and her family in Taos, New Mexico, or zip up to Colorado to snow ski, he wraps things up by noon on Saturdays and has until Wednesday before he’s due back at work. Another is the solitude—he’s either alone or working with either Derek or Nathan.

“It’s different, being here when it’s pitch black and quiet,” he says. “Nathan (the third pit man) gets here around 5 a.m. So, I’m here two or three hours alone, but it’s a very busy couple hours.”

Like his co-workers, Rodriguez takes his job seriously and has enjoyed watching the success Evie Mae’s has garnered, especially being named No. 9 in Texas by Texas Monthly.

“We were very proud of that,” he says. “It makes you feel even better when you have customers come in saying, ‘It’s better than all these other places that are above you on the list. That list (with Texas Monthly) came out after I started working here, so I was here when we were slower, when we were only using two smokers. Now we’re using four, almost five on a Saturday.

That really helped with learning, too, because I started when we were doing about 30 or 40 on a Saturday.”

In less than a year of working at Evie Mae’s, Rodriguez has seen the brisket count double, along with every other meat.

With every sign pointing toward continued growth, that’s a strong indicator his job is secure.

When Texans think of legendary barbecue, their minds often drift to Central and East Central Texas. That’s where the oldest places exist. It’s uncommon, if not downright rare, to find a Top 10 barbecue eatery in West Texas. But Evie Mae’s (pronounced EH-vee Mae, not EE-vee Mae) in Wolfforth, Texas, obtained a No. 9 designation from Texas Monthly magazine in its 2017 Top 50 barbecue stops in Texas issue.

And, y’all, it’s well-deserved, as evidenced by the line that extends out the door and into the parking lot every day. If you want to enjoy their award-winning eats, arrive early (and, just a suggestion: wear stretchy pants). If you plan to roll in for a late lunch on Saturday, don’t. They sell out in a matter of hours, and they don’t open again until the following Wednesday. While waiting in line amidst the tantalizing fragrance of wood smoke, customers may enjoy free beer that’s been iced down in a large galvanized tin trough.

Mallory and Arnis Robbins’ wildly popular restaurant was named in honor of their daughter, Evelyn Mae, Evie Mae for short, who was born in 2013. Though it’s booming today, the Robbins’ restaurant has humble beginnings. Mallory and Arnis are both from eastern New Mexico, but were living in Tucson, Arizona, where Arnis had his own landscape design business.

It was while living in Arizona that he began dabbling with barbecue.

“I didn’t grow up eating a lot of barbecue,” says Arnis, who grew up on a peanut farm. “I was just fascinated with the whole process. I started barbecuing in our backyard and eventually that led to building a good size smoker. I built it on a whim as a project and, once I started using it pretty regularly, I started thinking of opening a roadside barbecue stand.”

They found a used vending trailer and by March 2014, they were selling barbecue one day a week on the side of the road in Tucson. Around the same time, Arnis’ parents had relocated to Lubbock after selling their farm in New Mexico. While the food truck was going great guns, by August 2014 the Robbins decided they’d like to be closer to family. By September 2014, they had sold their house and moved to Lubbock. By November 2014, Arnis had sold his landscape business.

Although they live in Lubbock-proper, they chose to park their food truck in Wolfforth because Lubbock, at the time, didn’t allow food trucks. The location turned out to be golden— it’s easy to get into and out of. Initially, the couple planned to help Arnis’ parents manage their rental properties. The food truck was more of a hobby—they never planned to open a brick-and-mortar location. The biggest problem they encountered early on in Wolfforth was disappointing customers because they sold out so quickly.

“We’d sell out within 30-45 minutes of opening,” Arnis says.

“We had five people working in the truck, we then added another pit. We knew we’d have to build a restaurant.”

The current location of Evie Mae’s opened April 28, 2016. The 18-20-hour days, where they got by on sometimes four hours of sleep, had paid off. They note their explosive growth has been based on the quality of their offerings, which has resulted in organic marketing, meaning satisfied customers have spread the word. The meat, which is definitely the star of the show, is served alongside phenomenal sides and desserts. One interesting note, which the couple doesn’t advertise, is that all of the food served at Evie Mae’s is gluten-free, except the bread and buns.

Just a few years ago Arnis was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, which made the couple acutely aware of how few restaurants were completely gluten-free. Considering most of the dishes don’t contain gluten anyway, most patrons probably don’t realize they’re dining at a gluten-free establishment.

All of their food is made in-house daily, so it’s fresh—the shop closes when they sell out, so there are no leftovers. The sides, including standbys such as slaw, pinto beans and potato salad, also include less-common dishes such as green chile cheese grits, baked potato casserole and collard greens.

Desserts are also made fresh at Evie Mae’s. Daily offerings vary, but the standards include coconut cream pie, peanut butter pie, and a mile-high strawberry pie as well as assorted cobblers and chocolate sheet cake. Their desserts are so popular, Evie Mae’s will soon launch a gluten-free bakery within the restaurant that will be open six days a week.

Public Art Collection at Texas Tech System

The

People returning to the Texas Tech University campus in Lubbock after an absence often remark how much the campus has changed since they were students or since they were last there. In addition to the new buildings and other large additions and expansions, new elements that grace the ever-growing campus include the many art installations that are added each year.

For each building that is publicly funded, one percent of the total building cost is allowed for the creation and installation of carefully-curated artwork. Whether a mural on the side of a building, a free-standing metal piece in a courtyard or a piece suspended from the ceiling, these creative works of art enhance the visual appeal of an already a beautiful campus.

“Illuminated Rider,” 2016 Tony Greer (American) Neon Location: Jones AT&T Stadium, North End Zone Within the collection that has become the Texas Tech University System Public Art Program, there is a thread of work that highlights the art and science of illumination. That thread begins with the monumental neon Double T on the southeast end zone, presented by the Class of 1938. “Illuminated Rider” is a continuation of that theme and an interpretation of the beloved Masked Rider icon of Texas Tech University.

The fluidity of form, crispness of line, and illuminated colors are all created using an artist’s torch to shape glass. This piece was created in hand blown neon that highlights that element’s properties as an artistic medium by artist Tony Greer, along with Larry Simmons, Randy Fisher and Andrew Hagan of the Tornado Gallery.

“Syntaxis Mathematica,” 2016 Jonathan Whitfill (American) Powder Coated Steel Location: Art 3D Annex

“Syntaxis Mathematica” is the Latin translation of a treatise that has the rare distinction of being the longest scientific text in use in human history. It is credited to an astronomer named Ptolemy and was used to predict the motion of the planets and stars for more than a thousand years, until the Copernican Revolution. “Syntaxis Mathematica” is credited with determining astronomy as a science. Although Ptolemy was incorrect in his hypothesis that the earth was located in the center of the universe, he helped develop a system that explained the celestial sphere’s motions made of orbits consisting of perfect circles, that included yet another perfect circle, called an epicycle, within that motion.

Anyone who loves circles that much, we can truly respect.

“CEO” features an astute, active businesswoman on the move. The name of the sculpture was given out of respect for women business leaders. Goodacre is the CEO of her own corporation, which was established in 1979.

Developed as a symbol of communication and commerce throughout history, three major groupings totaling 15 tree forms depict the graphic and iconic elements of technology communication circuits. At each end of the branches, silver nodes with dichroic discs flash radiant spectrums of color depicting the animation of communication circuitry. Etched on the stainless steel tiles that emanate from the trees are ancient through modern forms of text language, used by many cultures to continue their messages and stories:

Cuneiform – One of the most ancient and sophisticated languages used for inter-cultural trading and communication.

Morse Code – Connected communication over large land and water areas.

Braille – A language that opened up a whole world for the visually impaired and assimilated this large culture back into society.

Binary – An open code system birthing our forward thrust into communication technology.

Each of the languages is translated to the corresponding quote panel chosen by the representatives of the Rawls College of Business.

“Mechanism,” 2016 Frank Swanson (American) Red Rose Granite Location: Maddox Engineering Research Center A mechanism in engineering is anything that can transmit or transform energy. The sculpture can be viewed as mechanism, abstractly based on a sliding shaft coupler used to engage or disengage the transfer of energy.

The sculpture also honors the Maddox brothers, Jack and Donovan, and the JF Maddox Foundation. The center piece represents the Foundation, formed by the brothers. The two outer pieces represent each brother. They were the mechanism that transformed their goodwill into a foundation to benefit their community, a transformation of energy that will live on for generations.

“Viva Tree” is a light-based sculpture that is created from a series of helix type forms suspended from a ceiling plate shaped by four circles interconnecting. With a palette of light, acrylic, and stainless steel, the artwork enhances the surrounding texture of the interior space while retaining its own unique character and form.

“Viva Tree” takes its name from the Spanish for live or life. This is a wonderful expression of harmony with our Spanish Renaissance architectural heritage. The work expresses the new beginnings for the building and is the artist’s salutation to the future of all who pass through.

Artist Bruce Munro is best known for large immersive light-based installations inspired primarily by his interest in shared human experience and connection. “Viva Tree” is a site-specific sculpture from the artist’s Light and Language series. The words “Honor” and “Vision” are etched into the prisms, written in the dot and dash language of Morse code.

Artist Shane Allbritton extracted visual components from blueprints, physics, formulas, calculations, machinery, and diagrams to create “Aureole,” reconfiguring them to create a new artistic expression and allude to the programs in Industrial Engineering.

“Aureole,” or enlightened circle, employs these symbols from various fields and arranges them in a circular composition, like a mandala, which is in itself symbolic of a diagram or chart.

The centers of the discs are visually more chaotic and become streamlined as they reach outwards. The circular form represents a wholeness or integrated approach to its creation, whereby each piece of the equation is balanced and weighed against the other, visually constructing the final solution to an engineering puzzle.

Each disc artistically represents one of the five areas within the Department of Industrial Engineering. Those areas are (from left to right): Operations Research, Systems and Engineering Management, Statistics and Quality Control, Manufacturing Systems, and Ergonomics and Human Factors.

“Run” showcases five sequential depictions of a female athlete running, inspired by images of Texas Tech track athletes. It is as if each pose is captured by freezeframe or stop-motion animation. To create the illusion of movement, each figure is created out of dozens of laser-cut vertical slices of stainless steel, with each layer held apart by pegs. This special construction creates an effect of an ever-shifting nature as you move around the piece, changing from a topographical view to figures almost disappearing from varying angles. Steel rod connectors between figures appear as free-floating lines exiting the back of each figure, instilling a sense of motion with a cartoonish flair.

If any faculty member at Texas Tech University could be called inspirational, it would be Bill Dean. Having taught mass communications, public relations and journalism for more than 50 years, he has had ample opportunity to impart knowledge to students. Yet, it isn’t even his breadth of knowledge that makes his classes memorable—it’s his sincerity. He wants his students to learn and to be able to apply the information he shares to their lives and careers.

Teaching is one of those professions in which you cannot excel without being called to it. Just as successful nurses, doctors and ministers have more than just book knowledge and learned skills—good teachers respect the value of education.

They are lifelong learners themselves. It is a passion for them.

Dean became interested in teaching when he was a junior in college at Texas Tech, taking journalism courses and majoring in marketing.

“I had started coaching youth baseball teams and enjoyed the opportunity to work with young people,” he says.

Teaching was a perfect fit for his interests and skills.

From Fall 1962 to April 1966, he served as director of publications and taught journalism at his alma mater, Lubbock High School. While he was teaching there, he completed his master’s degree in higher education from Texas Tech.

During that time, Lubbock gained a new school— Coronado High School. Dean applied for the baseball coaching job but was turned down. About a year later, he was hired as director of student activities instead.

Everything and everyone was new at Coronado, which provided a great opportunity to create programs and set the bar high for the students who followed.

Dean’s love of Texas Tech prompted him to pursue a doctoral degree so that he could teach at the college level. He completed his doctorate in education administration in 1971.

During the time he was going to graduate school, he was director of student publications and associate professor of mass communications, a position he held from 1967 to 1978.

“Student activism was very much present in the ’60s, but not that much at Texas Tech—probably because of the conservative nature of the area,” he says. “It was a stressful time for young people because of the Vietnam War, and many were drafted.

“The ’70s were the era of Watergate, and a large number of students wanted to become journalism majors so they could be investigative reporters like Woodward and Bernstein. The fact that a young Robert Redford and a young Dustin Hoffman played those roles in the movie ‘All the President’s Men’ had something to do with it.”

Dean has taught the gamut of courses in mass communications—history of journalism, introduction to mass communications and public relations are just a few. He also has mentored many students.

For four years, he served as associate dean under Jerry Hudson, Ph.D., former dean of mass communications, and

was responsible for advising, scholarships, student appeals, student probations and suspensions as well as other tasks.

“I remember one summer Janet Wright, who was our adviser, and I advised roughly 50 students a day each time there was a freshman orientation in the summer. My student conference load went up considerably during this time. Good advising is important because you want students to take the right courses at the right time so they graduate in four years.”

All those hours spent in the classroom and advising students certainly made an impact on his students. Over the years, Dean has been named Best Teacher at Texas Tech in a student poll 14 times.

Most recently, he received this honor for the 2016-2017 school year.

John D. Steinmetz, a 2002 Rawls College of Business graduate with a finance degree, is vice chairman, president and CEO of Vista Bank and Vista Bancshares. Additionally, he is currently serving his second term on the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents. He has nothing but praise for Dean.

“Introduction to mass communications was the only ‘official’ course I had with Dr. Dean,” Steinmetz says. “However, as a member of Phi Delta Theta, where Dean served as the fraternity’s chapter adviser for 38 years, I also had the ‘privilege’ of eight semesters attending The Bill Dean School of Hard Knocks.”

While Steinmetz says Dean taught him and many other men over the years a number of life lessons, the most important things he said Dean taught him were to always work harder than the person next to you, never focus on your competition and not to be satisfied with average— three characteristics Steinmetz now shares with his eight-year-old son.

“From him, I have learned to be my own man and not to change just because others do. Dr. Dean is a man of great conviction and integrity and one who selflessly invests in others. I speak not only for myself but for the hundreds, if not thousands, of women and men who can attest to the impact he has had on their lives. Like so

the 2000s I think we are attracting some very bright students who are very technology savvy, but we are also experiencing many students who are ill prepared for the discipline of college.

They use cell phones and computers in class for purposes unrelated to academics. They miss class a great deal and make all kinds of excuses.

“They are all over social media, but they have no idea what is going on in our state or our country and how these things will impact their lives. They really don’t care. Every year I call on students and ask them questions like, how did the United States enter World War II? They don’t know. ‘Oh, something happened over in Europe didn’t it?’

“With all this said, there is a maturing process that takes place as these students enter into their third and fourth years here that makes you forget the problems of their freshman year. We have a ton of great students on this campus who will bring great recognition to our university in the future.”

In closing, Dean says, “My wish for my students is happiness and success.”

In addition, Dean received the high honor of the President’s Teaching Award for Excellence twice. The Moms & Dads Association presented him with a Faculty Distinguished Leadership Award in 1997.

“There are no guessing games about expectations and requirements for Dr. Dean’s courses,” says Jerry Hudson, Ph.D., former dean of the College of Media & Communication, who retired in 2013 after serving 35 years on the faculty. “Students know what he expects in class attendance, grade requirements, class participation, assignment deadlines and course requirements. All course requirements and expectations are included in his course syllabus. Because he has taught most of his courses for a thousand years, students hear and learn of his requirements from other students. And in some cases, students learn from their parents who had the same course. Students know what is expected and they know that Dr. Dean will assist them in being successful in the course.

“I will conclude with this thought. Faculty members remember with fondness the students who were dedicated to learning course material, developing skills, expanding career opportunities, seeking new information, and participating in student activities. Students remember faculty members with fondness who assist them in achieving the same thing. Dr. Dean’s career has been dedicated to these standards of teaching excellence. That should be the goal of each faculty member.”

Despite taking the helm of the Texas Tech Alumni Association (then Ex-Students Association) in 1978, Dean has continued teaching. In fact, he teaches about 1,500 students each year. He says he enjoys teaching because of the interaction with students and the opportunity to help point some of them in the right direction.

“I try very hard to make things simple and easy to grasp,” he says. “I think I am highly motivated in the classroom. I also take the philosophy that the reason I am teaching in this room is because students have elected to take this course and, therefore, my job is to do everything possible to help them be successful.”

His service to students goes beyond imparting knowledge to them. In addition to serving as adviser to Phi Delta Theta fraternity for 38 years, he is now in his 22nd year as adviser to the Saddle Tramps spirit organization.

Having taught several levels of students for more than half a century, Dean has a unique perspective on how education—and students—have changed over the years.

“Tech’s enrollment was beginning to grow in the 1990s, and classes were getting larger,” he says. “I think this is a period when we began to see many students who had not been taught to write appear.

“Technology was also beginning to change. Keep in mind that, in what I am about to say, I teach mostly freshmen. In

MYERS’ LEGACY IN LUBBOCK ADDS ANOTHER CHAPTER

Growing up in Borger, Texas, nearly 180 miles to the north of Lubbock, Myers knew he wanted to go to Texas Tech, as was the case with most of his classmates. But looking back at that decision now, it’s something that Myers could have never planned out for his life.

And as he prepares to be inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday (April 7), Myers sure is grateful for Texas Tech University.

“It just sort of happened,” Myers said. “To be able to be here as a player, then as a coach and then as the athletic director, it’s been a great career to be able to do all of that at Texas Tech.”

Myers is also a member of the Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame, the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame and the Texas Tech Athletic Hall of Honor. But being inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame is something else.

“Well, you know, it’s the biggest honor that I’ve ever received to be inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame,” Myers said.

“I think it’s the biggest honor that anybody associated with athletics can receive in the state of Texas.”

Myers played basketball for the Red Raiders from 195559 and served as men’s basketball head coach from midway through the 1970-71 season through 1991. He then went on to become athletic director from 1996-2011 and is now Athletics Director Emeritus.

Myers is the winningest coach in Texas Tech basketball history, as he posted a 326-261 record and led the Red Raiders to 16 winning records, two conference championships and four NCAA Tournament berths during his 20 years at the helm.

But he never thought he’d be Tech’s men’s basketball head coach.

“One of my coaches was the head coach when I left. Then to come back as an assistant coach and then be the head coach, it was unbelievable,” Myers said. “It’s a great thing for my family and me and a great opportunity to come to Texas Tech at a fairly young age. It’s something that has really worked out well for us.”

During his time as athletic director, an outbreak of growth happened at Texas Tech, from the budget to the facilities. The United Supermarkets Arena, as well as the Marsha Sharp Center for Student-Athletes, were both built, while upgrades were made to Jones AT&T Stadium during his tenure. It was the biggest facility upgrade in school history.

Myers was also a member of the NCAA men’s basketball selection committee, was president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and served on the NCAA men’s basketball rules committee.

“I’ve enjoyed all three of those careers I’ve had, as a coach, as a player and as an athletic administrator,” Myers said of his legacy in Lubbock. “We worked hard, tried to improve the situation for student-athletes, coaches and fans. Hopefully we’ve contributed to that some.”

As a player, Myers earned three letters and his 86.9 percent mark from the free-throw line in 1957-58 is still second in the all-time Texas Tech career record book. When asked about his favorite memory from when he laced up his sneakers and put on his Red Raider uniform, he recalled scanning Municipal Coliseum and seeing all the Texas Tech fans.

“Playing in the Southwest Conference, playing before capacity crowds,” Myers said. “We attracted 10,000 people and had great crowds. Those are the things I remember most is the great fans filling up that arena.”

This season, Myers watched again as the attendance numbers rapidly increased, filling up United Supermarkets Arena

“It’s good to see your school be successful in any sport,” Myers said. “It’s good to see coach (Chris) Beard take that team and mold them into a championship caliber team. It’s just a great advertisement for the university to have that kind of success so quickly.”

Behind Big 12 Co-Coach of the Year in Beard and senior All-American point guard Keenan Evans, this Red Raider team picked to finish seventh in the Big 12 this season finished second. It was a special season for Texas Tech, and one that ended in Boston to eventual national champ Villanova.

And you bet Myers was there to watch it all in person.

“We’ve been down the last few years, but I think we’re back,” Myers said. “I think we’re back to stay in basketball.”

cheer and stunt partners won gold at the U.S. National Coed Premier Team at the 2018 International Cheer Union (ICU) Cheerleading Championships in April in Orlando, Florida. The pair placed second at the 2018 College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship. They were named to the national team in January.

Bruce Bills, head cheer and mascot coach, was named Coach of the Year at USA Cheer’s 2018 College STUNT National Championship in April in East Lansing, Michigan. A Division I STUNT Coach of the Year, Bills has served as head coach for seven years. Bills led the CoEd Cheer Squad to the program’s first NCA Division 1A National Championship in 2017.

The All-Girl Cheer Squad made it to the final rounds of the stunt competition, placing fourth in the nation. This year is only the second time the team has competed. Unlike many of their competitors, who only participate in competitions, the squad performs at football, baseball and volleyball games, as well as makes public appearances.

TTAA Changes year, several personnel changes have taken place among Texas Tech Alumni Association employees. They are listed below.

KRISTINA W. BUTLER is vice president for marketing, membership, communications and chapter development. Since January 2015, she has been director of communications for the association. She has led the effort for the rebranding of the association, among other duties. She is a 2004 Texas Tech graduate with a bachelor’s degree in English. She completed her master’s degree in strategic communications in May. JIM DOUGLASS is vice president for development for the Alumni Association. Previously, he was associate vice president for chapter development and legislative affairs. He has been with the association since 1979. Jim is a 1970 Texas Tech graduate with a bachelor’s degree in management.

CHRIS SNEAD is vice president for operations, having been promoted from associate vice president. He has been at the association since 1998, when he came on board as a field representative for West Texas. He is a 1995 Texas Tech graduate with a bachelor’s degree in technical communications.

LAURA BIXLER is director of membership, having been coordinator since 2010. Prior to that, she was a student assistant in the marketing area of the association. She is a 2010 Texas Tech graduate with a bachelor’s degree in public relations. However, her husband has been transferred to Amarillo, so she will be leaving the association soon.

BRITTA TYE has had a position change from coordinator of special events to director of special events and Student Alumni Board adviser.

She has been with the association since 2016. A 1999 Texas Tech graduate, she has a bachelor’s degree in public relations and a master’s degree in higher education, completed in 2005.

DAYME WALTHER is director of chapter development and Dallas-Fort Worth area regional representative. She has been a long-time field representative for the association, having started in 2005. She is a 2004 Texas Tech graduate with a bachelor’s degree in public relations.

BRETT WINEGARNER is director of communications. Prior to this position, he was coordinator of communications for the association, beginning in Fall 2014. A 2013 Texas Tech graduate, he has a bachelor’s degree in journalism.

In addition, three new employees are now on the association staff.

KATIE DOWNING is a 2018 graphic design graduate who began working as a student assistant at the association in August 2017. During her time as an assistant, Downing did all graphic designs for the association and was a vital part of our rebranding efforts. She graduated with her bachelor’s degree in May and was promoted to graphic designer.

CHAD ELROD is taking Bixler’s place in membership. He worked for the association as associate marketing director from 2005 to 2010. He has both nonprofit and corporate marketing experience. He has two degrees from Texas Tech—a bachelor’s degree in public relations in 1999 and a master’s degree in mass communications in 2002.

KATIE FULLEN is a 2018 public relations graduate and has been working as a student assistant at the association since July 2017. Her main focus has been social media and photography. She now is communications coordinator.

BOOKS RICH RICE, Lubbock, published a book, “Thinking Globally,

Composing Locally: Rethinking Online Writing In The Age Of The Global Internet.” The volume addresses three interconnected and overarching objectives and explores how writing and its teaching should adapt to the environment of international online communication. He is an associate professor of English at Texas Tech University, where he teaches courses in new media, intercultural communication, rhetoric and composition in the Technical Communication and Rhetoric program. He is a US Fulbright-Nehru Scholar, and his teaching and research extend to India and China, where he has served as a Visiting Research Professor. His wife is Sharron.

CARL F. EWERT (BBA Finance) Dallas, Texas, has announced his retirement from managing/internal director at JLL, a professional service firm specializing in commercial real estate. As a member of JLL’s commercial real estate tenant representation team, specializing in office, Carl has proven himself as a leader of character.

During his tenure at JLL, he led more client engagement teams in the Greater Dallas CBD and surrounding areas that have set new real estate market industry trends for customer occupancy savings than any other real estate broker in the Dallas Metroplex. His wife is Trisha.

W. DON STULL, JR. (BS Civil Engineering, MBA ’97 General Business) Lubbock, was inducted as a senior member of the National Academy of Inventors. Don is the inventor of four U.S. Patents related to “Microwave Disinfection and Sterilization.”

The inventions were a collaboration with Texas Tech University. Don currently works with a major international bakery to treat organic preservative free bread to keep bread mold-free for more than 70 days versus its usual 10-day shelf life. His wife is Valessa.

1984 LARRY G. AUTREY (BBA Finance) Fort Worth, Texas, has been named North Texas Community Foundation’s Professional Advisor of the year. Larry, managing partner at Whitley Penn, is a Certified Public Accountant with more than 30 years of tax, advisory and valuation public accounting experience focused on public and private clients.

He has served as the firm’s Managing Partner for more than 17 years and has been instrumental in the continued growth and development of the firm.

Under Larry’s leadership, the firm has increased revenue by more than 15 percent annually and has successfully expanded to the Dallas, Houston and Austin markets. His wife is Tiffany.

1989 BETH BRANIFF HARP (BA Advertising/ PR) Houston, Texas, is the executive director of Kid’s Meals in Houston. During the last decade, the organization has grown into an outfit that delivers more than 2,000 meals daily to kids along six distinct routes throughout Houston. Her works have pioneered meals-on-wheels programs for preschool kids around the nation.

1990 JAY M. EDWARDS (BS Civil Engineering) Midland, Texas, who currently serves as chief operating officer for Parkhill Smith & Cooper is working alongside Winkler Services and Garney Construction to promote and enhance water conservation and pipeline technologies to serve the Permian Basin area.

2003 JAMES NAYLOR (BBA Management) Amarillo, Texas, has joined Freese and Nichols, Inc. as Water Treatment Discipline Leader serving the North Texas, West Texas and Oklahoma markets. Naylor’s extensive experience in planning and design will play an integral role in providing solutions for municipalities facing complex water treatment plant projects. Naylor joins Freese and Nichols with more than 17 years of experience managing and leading water treatment facility master plans, process evaluations, detailed designs and construction phase services. His wife is TYLA J. NAYLOR ’04 (BS Allied Health Physical Therapy).

and Manufacturing) Houston, Texas, was featured in Vogue Taiwan for her brand that features cutting-edge design. The Becky Hollands brand celebrates the individualistic woman who is confident, artistic and the ultimate ‘modern sophisticate.’

Her exclusive designs have been seen on celebrities and featured in countless publications. Becky’s designs can be seen on reality television stars like Bravo Network’s Real Housewives to Texas socialites such as Joanne King Herring.

JORDAN RANDALL SMITH (MM Music Performance) Forney, Texas, has recently been appointed as conductor to two new posts in the Baltimore area. Jordan will lead the choir, children’s choir and orchestra at Hunt’s Church in Towson and will co-direct the church’s new digital media department. Jordan will also be joining the staff of the Hopkins Symphony Orchestra and will continue to lead Symphony Number One as Music Director.

In the case of Dick Auld, a retired professor in the Department of Plant and Soil Science in the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources (CASNR), his desire to find the next advancement in cotton production came from reading about a practice of the Hopi Indian tribe from more than 100 years ago.

The result, which recently was awarded a patent 10 years after the application process began, could not only boost the cotton industry but also possibly bring back manufacturing to the U.S.

ONE RED RAIDER’S JOURNEY BACK TO LUBBOCK

Lindley Herring, account manager at Officewise

WHY I LEFT THE METROPLEX Born and raised in Plainview, just 50 miles north of Lubbock, Lindley Herring grew up coming to Lubbock for everything from back-to-school shopping to birthday dinners to events in the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center.

And in 1997, she came for Texas Tech University.

“My dad had gone to Texas Tech and loved it,” Herring said. “He let us apply for other schools, but after touring and visiting Tech, it was my top choice. Dad was a business major. When you’re deciding what you want to do with your life, you use your parents as role models and mentors.

That brought me to the business college, and Tech has one of the best in the nation.”

Following in her father’s footsteps, Herring graduated with a degree in business from Texas Tech and shortly after found a job and moved to Dallas. During the next 12 years, she met her husband Brian and, after the birth of their first daughter, the two of them hatched a plan to return to Lubbock.

“We decided we didn’t want to raise her in Dallas and wanted to get back to our roots,” she said. “We were always commuting and never saw our little girl. My husband had a 45-minute commute one way, I had a one-hour commute one way. We were spending $400 a month in toll tag fees.

It was hard to go out and eat when we knew we’d have an hour and a half wait. It was hard to go shopping when we knew we’d have to park our car four lots over, and even though our daughter was only a 1 year old at the time, she still says things about how it took forever to get to her day care in the mornings.”

When Herring and her husband factored up the amount of time they were spending in the car and the quality of life differences, it made sense for them to go back to Lubbock.

“There’s just a sense of peace about Lubbock that I didn’t find living in the metroplex,” Herring said. “We would never change anything about our time in Dallas. It helped us grow, we met each other there, but the calmness that came over my husband and I when we pulled back into Lubbock was unlike anything I could describe.”

Now, while Herring serves as an account manager for Officewise, a local business products distributor, her husband has a thriving dental practice in the “Hub City.” And though Lubbock is just as they remembered, the city had also seen lots of positive growth in their absence.

“When I was here from 1997-2001, Lubbock had maybe 10 hotels. Now there’s around 60,” Herring said. “That means lots of people are coming here. Lubbock is thriving so much that people are finding it attractive. Not only are people coming here for business, they’re coming here to visit. They’re coming here for sports, shopping and restaurants and dining.

With all the new attractions and companies that are being built – it’s completely different now than when I left in 2001.

It’s exciting. It’s solidified our decision to move back.”

With that ongoing development, the “Hub City” continues to thrive.

“Lubbock has been growing significantly over the past decade, but still offers that same friendly West Texas hospitality,” John Osborne, president and CEO for the Lubbock Economic Development Alliance (LEDA), said.

“Lubbock has added more restaurants and retail stores. Local family attractions have expanded and more schools are being built. Our downtown is also being revitalized with sizable investments, allowing for new businesses and residents to make downtown their home. Lubbock is a well-balanced city that people want to live and work in.”

It’s something that Whitney Kennedy, HR manager for Tyler Technologies, has seen firsthand.

“I have talked with lots of people about what has brought them here and why they stay,” she said. “The top three reasons are the sense of community Lubbock provides while still being big enough for opportunity, great school systems and no traffic. It’s a great place for quality of life personally and for a family.”

With growth in industries like health care, technology, education and agriculture, there are more opportunities in Lubbock than ever before.

“Lubbock’s corporate sector is very strong, and as these companies grow, they need skilled employees in a variety of occupations such as engineering, sales and financial services,” said Christine Allen, director of workforce development for LEDA. “LEDA is trying to raise awareness about these higher paying positions, and we are assisting with the effort to recruit highly skilled, indemand employees to our community.”

One way LEDA is accomplishing this task is through return2lbk.org, which features concentrated, valuable corporate job openings in a variety of industries along with information about life in Lubbock and video testimonials of Texas Tech alumni and Lubbockites who have moved away and found an opportunity to return to the Lubbock community, just like Herring.

“My family loves being here,” Herring said. “We go to Texas Tech sporting events. We like waking up on a Saturday morning and getting donuts in five minutes instead of 45 minutes and going to the grocery store in 30 minutes, not an hour and a half. We like the support and sense of community here. I would highly encourage people to consider moving back.”

As for Herring, she has no plans to move anytime soon.

“People always say, ‘I will never move again,’ but for us that’s the truth. We are in Lubbock forever. We wouldn’t even consider going anywhere else.”

MADELINE LOCKHART , a sophomore pursuing a double major in physics and math-

ematics, was one of 211 students in the United States selected for a Goldwater Scholarship. She was selected from thousands of applicants. She is the third Goldwater Scholar from Texas Tech in three years and the 36th overall. After earning her doctorate in nuclear physics, Lockhart plans to dedicate her career to conducting research involving nuclear safeguards and peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

NORA CHAPMAN , a junior pursuing a double major in psychology and economics, was one of 281 applicants who received an Honorable Mention. She plans to earn a doctorate in behavioral economics and conduct research on the behavioral economics in cognitive neuroscience, social psychology and human factors psychology while teaching.

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was created to support students who are working toward careers in STEM fields, and the Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate award of its type in these fields. It pays for tuition, fees, books and room and board for winners.

time in five years, the Texas Tech University Wool Judging Team won a national championship, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Collegiate Wool Judging Contest last spring. The victory was the program’s third national title.

Split into two teams for the Houston competition, Texas Tech swept the top two spots in team standings. The Texas Tech Black team finished first overall, while the Red team took second. The Houston win, along with the program’s third-straight win at the National Western Stock Show, qualified them for their first national championship since 2013.

CONNER MCKINZIE , a freshman, placed first in grading and second in placing/reasons to take first overall. EMILY REILEY , a freshman, finished second overall with a first-place finish in placing and a fifthplace finish in grading. BRYNN OWEN , a freshman alternate, finished third, placing third in grading and eighth in placing/reasons.

Other Top 10 Texas Tech finishers were ASHLYN TUCKER , a freshman, fifth; JOHN SMITHWICK , a sophomore, seventh; FRANKLIN BUCHHOLZ , a freshman, ninth; and JACIE HENEFEY , a freshman, 10th.

Team in the Texas Tech University College of Media & Communication placed three teams in the top six of the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence (NPTE) and three teams in the top eight of the National Parliamentary Debate Association (NPDA) national championship tournament.

Texas Tech debate holds two NPDA National Championships (2008 and 2010) and one NPTE top speaker (2010) and consistently places in the top five at nationals.

LOGAN KELLEY , a junior political science major, was named the James “Al” Johnson top speaker, essentially being named an individual national champion, earning that honor over almost 300 other competitors.

Texas Tech advanced three teams to the elimination round and was named the No. 2 performing squad. MAX GROZNIK , a junior general studies major, and WILL HARPER , a junior public relations and communications major, finished second. The teams of MARIA DEMARCO , a junior communications major, and FIKER TESFAYE , a junior sociology major; and CODY GUSTAFSON , a sophomore communications major, and Kelley advanced to the quarterfinals.

Gustafson was ranked as the sixth-best speaker, with Groznik coming in 18th and Tesfaye 20th.

DeMarco and Tesfaye finished third in the finals. Groznik and Harper finished fifth, with Kelley and Gustafson in sixth. Groznik was named fifthbest speaker, with Gustafson in 11th, Tesfaye in 13th and Kelley in 18th.

T H E K N I GH T R A I DE R S Chess Team placed third at the 2018 President’s Cup at the Marshall Chess Club in New York City last spring. Known as the Final Four of College Chess, the competition included defending champion Webster University, St. Louis University and the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley. This year was the fifth consecutive year and eighth time overall Texas Tech has competed in the national championship.

Texas Tech finished with five total points, beating St. Louis University’s fourth-place. UT-RGV took the crown. Webster University finished in second place with seven points, ending their five-year streak as champions of the tournament.

Four Knight Raiders collected points in the competition. International Grandmasters PAVLO VORONTSOV , a computer science major, and SERGEY MATSENKO , a graduate interdisciplinary studies major, each finished with 1.5 points. International Grandmaster ANDRII BARYSHPOLETS , a doctoral economics major, and International Master JACK SHTEMBULIAK , a finance major, each finished with one point. International Master LUIS TORRES , a mechanical engineering major, attended the tournament as an alternate.
