A Veterinary School for Texas Tech you know, the Texas Tech University System had planned to ask the legislature for approval to open a veterinary school in Amarillo. It was announced in December that the new veterinary school is now “on pause.”

Obviously, that means that plans are on hold. The question is, “Why?” The chancellor of the A&M System was quoted in the Bryan Eagle in November as saying, “We do get a little bit offended when somebody says they’re going to try to duplicate what we have here. You can’t duplicate this in your wildest dreams. This is the place and it will always be the place where veterinary medicine reigns king in the United States of America, and I’m proud of that.”

Well, he should be proud of A&M’s Veterinary School. It is an outstanding school and will continue to be one.

The only problem with his comments is that Texas Tech is not trying to duplicate what the Aggies have in College Station.

Tech’s proposal is based on the needs of rural Texas and preparing new veterinary students who want to serve rural areas. It is also aimed to address a shortage of large-animal veterinarians.

Texas Tech Chancellor Robert Duncan has stated, “There is no doubt that there is an existing and growing need for more food animal production veterinarians. This situation continues to worsen as Texas faces an aging veterinarian population coupled with more than one-third of its students leaving the state for veterinary medicine education.”

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board said in July that the state doesn’t need another traditional veterinary school but was receptive to the Tech proposal that the focus of their school would be to bring veterinarians to underserved rural areas.

“We are grateful for the Coordinating Board’s willingness to consider new approaches to address this critical need and look forward to sharing our unique vision for an innovative, cost-effective veterinary college,” Duncan stated.

Kynan Sturgess, DVM, a veterinarian and partner of the Hereford Veterinary Clinic in Hereford, Texas, wrote a guest editorial in the Amarillo Globe News earlier this fall regarding this issue. He makes some very important points.

“I feel like I am part of a dying breed,” he wrote. “Over the past 25 years, I have witnessed many retirements and the passing of vets, but I have not seen many new vets come along to replace them. We typically have needed to hire vets from out of state.

“Over the past 25 years, Hereford Vet Clinic has employed nine different associate veterinarians, of which only two were graduates of Texas A&M where our current veterinary school is located. Texas A&M has an outstanding veterinary school. The problem is that it graduates very few vets that want to come out to a rural Texas. The vast majority of their graduates want to stay in the metropolitan areas and practice exclusively with small animals.

“Tech’s proposal is very focused on the needs of rural Texas, and developing new vets that will be willing and will want to work in rural areas….Tech’s proposal does not include building a new teaching hospital: Students will spend their final year of vet school in veterinary practices around the state learning their new trade in actual vet clinics.

“The practices that Tech’s students will be spending time at will be thoroughly vetted and continuously monitored to ensure that its students are seeing a good caseload. Each of these practices will have a veterinarian that will become an adjunct professor. The students will have to file reports with the school documenting activities, and if a practice is not providing the learning experiences necessary, it will be reviewed.”

Tech planned to ask the Texas Legislature for approximately $17 million and pledged to raise the rest, $85 million. The City of Amarillo has pledged $15 million.

The plan received input from the veterinary, livestock and dairy industries and has secured broad industry support.

A&M recently celebrated the opening of their new $120 million vet teaching complex to “target minorities and large-animal vets for rural areas.”

Really?

I wonder why they did not mention that purpose in their published announcements when the regents approved the project in 2012 or in 2014 when they celebrated the groundbreaking. By the way, in both of those announcements, they promoted the expansion of their small animal hospital.

Pride is defined as “a reasonable or justifiable selfrespect.” I certainly don’t fault the Texas A&M chancellor for being proud of their vet school. It is also defined as “haughty” when it crosses the reasonable or justifiable limit and becomes misguided.

One institution’s innovation should not be defeated by another’s pride. Texas Tech has proposed an innovative solution to a chronic and growing shortage of large animal and rural veterinarians that has long been ignored. It has been endorsed by agriculture and livestock industry leaders. We hope the legislature evaluates this opportunity based on its merits.

RICHARD ROSEN, THE GLEN D. WEST ENDOWED PROFESSOR OF LAW AND THE DIRECTOR OF THE CENTER FOR MILITARY LAW AND POLICY, HAS BEEN NAMED THE INTERIM DEAN OF THE TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW. Rosen joined the Texas Tech University School of Law in 2003 after serving as an officer in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps for 26 years. He is an expert in and teaches classes in torts, constitutional law, military criminal law, national security law, human rights law and international humanitarian law.

Rosen earned his juris doctorate from the University of Miami and a master of laws degree from the University of Virginia. He earned a bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University in 1970.

The team has filed a provisional patent on a tiny glass-and-plastic chip that can confirm a sepsis diagnosis in just four hours, providing medical professionals a greater window of time to treat the patient.

JIM BRET CAMPBELL OF FORT WORTH HAS BEEN APPOINTED AS THE NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE NATIONAL RANCHING HERITAGE CENTER AT TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY. Campbell has held managerial or executive positions with the American Quarter Horse Association, the Texas Cattle Feeders Association and the National Cutting Horse Association.

He earned two degrees from Texas Tech University: a bachelor of science in agricultural communications in 1996 and a master of science in agricultural education in 1997.

Established in 1969, the National Ranching Heritage Center is a museum of ranching history situated on the Texas Tech University campus at 3121 Fourth Street. The NRHC features almost 50 authentic ranch buildings dating from the late-18th to the mid-20th century.

NEWS THROUGH THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERS (AICHE), TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY WILL PLAY AN ACTIVE ROLE IN A NEW $140 MILLION INSTITUTE SELECTED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY AS PART OF ITS NEW NETWORK OF MANUFACTURING USA INSTITUTES. The Rapid Advancement in Process Intensification Deployment (RAPID) Manufacturing Institute, led by the AIChE, will be the 10th and newest member of this network, which has a $70 million commitment over five years from the Department of Energy and another $70 million from private partners and energy industries. The goal is to increase domestic productivity and efficiency of various forms of energy by 20 percent during the next five years through improved manufacturing processes. Texas Tech is one of 34 academic institutions participating in RAPID.

HORN PROFESSOR SANKAR CHATTERJEE, PH.D., CURATOR OF PALEONTOLOGY AT THE MUSEUM OF TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY, IS PART OF A TEAM THAT RECENTLY DISCOVERED A SYRINX, A VOCAL ORGAN FOUND IN CRETACEOUS-ERA AVIAN DINOSAUR FOSSILS THAT ALLOWED THE BIRD-LIKE DINOSAURS TO SING. The syrinx is absent in nonavian dinosaur fossils.

This finding indicates that the organ may have originated late in the evolution of modern birds and that other dinosaurs may not have been able to make noises similar to bird calls heard today. The team found the syrinx in a fossil of Vegavis iaai, a foot-propelled bird that lived at the end of the Cretaceous period.

COMMENCEMENT CEREMONIES WERE HELD DEC. 16 AND 17 AT THE UNITED SPIRIT ARENA. Former Texas Tech University System Chancellor John T. Montford, former member of the Texas Senate, delivered the address at the commencement ceremonies. Montford was named the first chancellor when the TTUS was created in 1996. During his tenure, the system embarked on its first capital campaign—$500 million was raised in that effort. He has held a variety of leadership positions in industry, academia and government.

THE MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION PROGRAM HOUSED IN THE RAWLS COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AT TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY HAS BEEN RATED AS ONE OF THE TOP PROGRAMS IN THE U.S. IN THE ANNUAL BLOOMBERG BUSINESSWEEK RANKINGS. The Rawls MBA program was ranked No. 77 based on surveys by employers, alumni and students as well as rankings in salary and job placement.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY’S NATIONAL WIND INSTITUTE (NWI) AND WESTERN TEXAS COLLEGE (WTC) SIGNED AN AGREEMENT THAT WOULD ALLOW STUDENTS AT THE COLLEGE IN SNYDER TO TRANSFER COURSEWORK EARNED ON AN ASSOCIATE’S DEGREE AND APPLY IT TOWARD A BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN WIND ENERGY. Shin’s area of expertise is in textiles, apparel manufacturing, human factors, sizing systems, 3D body scan, 3D virtual design, fit assessment and therapeutic clothing for special populations. Ramkumar, an expert in nanotechnology, is guiding the students’ work in his lab, which involves imbedding honey into fibers at the nanolevel. The result is fibers that are inherently antibacterial since honey is a natural antibiotic to which many bacteria have not developed a resistance. Ramkumar specializes in developing value-added materials using nonwoven and nanotechnology. He currently holds two U.S. patents and two U.S. pending applications.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY’S COLLEGE OF VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS WAS RENAMED TO HONOR J.T. & MARGARET TALKINGTON FOR THEIR LEGACY OF GENEROSITY TO THE UNIVERSITY. Home to more than 1,100 students and industry-leading faculty the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts will undergo renovations and expansion funded by a generous donation of $10 million from the J.T. & Margaret Talkington Charitable Foundation. THE TEXAS ALLIANCE FOR WATER CONSERVATION (TAWC) HOUSED IN THE COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES & NATURAL RESOURCES AT TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY IS BATTLING TO SLOW THE DECLINE OF THE OGALLALA AQUIFER. THE TAWC WAS CREATED IN A COMMUNITY-OUTREACH EFFORT TO ASSIST FARMERS WITH THE WATER CHALLENGES THEY FACE. TAWC is funded by the state of Texas through a bill that was promoted by then Sen. Robert Duncan, current chancellor of the Texas Tech University System, that promotes water conservation through demonstration of watersaving irrigation technologies, increased producer awareness and improved management of major crops. The program hosts field days during growing seasons where attendees can walk through a producer’s field and evaluate how that grower implements water-saving techniques. TAWC also hosts a Water College that serves as a crash course in conservation. The program has received positive feedback and will continue to be implemented to educate producers on water conservation.

Noggle is well known for her portraits of aging women.

Noggle once remarked that, “I like older faces, not because of aging itself, but rather the look of the face, the revelation of life, and the conflict between what was and what they are now. That interests me, not the idea of aging itself.”

This is a self-portrait of the artist flying above the New Mexico landscape. At 21 she trained to be a Women Airforce Service Pilot (WASP) and flew missions in 1943 and 1944. She later became a stunt pilot and a crop duster.

THE ANNE NOGGLE FOUNDATION DONATED 43 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS TO THE ART DIVISION OF THE MUSEUM OF TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY. Her art is marked by honest portraits of herself, her friends and her family. One of her more famous series is a compilation of self-portraits while undergoing a facelift in 1975. Photos in the collection at the museum range from 1970 to 1987. Noggle was born in Evanston, Illinois, in 1922 and died in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 2005. She was a pilot and served in the Women Airforce Service Pilots for a year in 1943. She earned her graduate and undergraduate degrees in art at the University of New Mexico.

Whatever the project, the Department of Facilities, Planning & Construction manages to maintain our tradition of beauty and Spanish Renaissance architecture.

The next few pages showcase close ups of artwork at the building addition to the Rawls College of Business; the new Texas Tech University Systems Building that lies at the juncture of the Texas Tech Parkway and the Marsha Sharp Freeway; the new Honors Hall that will house only students enrolled in the Honors College and the Sports Performance Center located south of the Jones AT&T Stadium on Mac Davis Lane.

One percent of the budget of every new building on campus goes toward a fine art in tallation. The installation above appears outside the recently completed addition to the Rawls College of Business. Titled, “Illuminated Arboreal Data Codes (2016)” by Koryn Rolstad: Developed as a symbol of communication and commerce throughout history, three major groupings totaling 15 tree forms depict the graphic and iconic elements of technology communication circuits. At each end of the branches, silver nodes with dichroic discs flash radiant spectrums of color depicting the animation of communication circuitry.

Etched on the stainless steel tiles that emanate from the trees are ancient through modern forms of text language, used by many cultures to continue their messages and stories: 1. Binary – An open code system birthing our forward thrust into communication technology.

2. Braille – A language that opened up a whole world for the visually impaired and assimilated this large culture back into society.

3. Morse Code – Connected communication over large land and water areas.

4. Cuneiform – One of the most ancient and sophisticated languages used for inter-cultural trading and communication.

Each of the languages is translated to the corresponding quote panel chosen by the representatives of the Rawls College of Business.

Texas Tech University System will have a new home when construction is complete on the $27,500,000 TTUS Offi e located at 1508 Knoxville Ave. It will consist of offi e space for all of the TTUS offi es, support spaces, infrastructure, public art and landscaping for the facility. Sports Performance center The $48 million Sports Performance Center, located south of Jones AT&T Stadium, will house a 200-meter indoor, banked track with seating for more than 2,000 spectators as well as an indoor football practice field. Funded y gifts to the Campaign for Fearless Champions, the new facility replaces the former Athletic Training Center, dubbed “The Bubble,� which stood for 30 years prior to being demolished to prepare for the new center. Construction began in March 2016 and is expected to take 18 months to complete.

T

hat perfect workday. You get up after the sun rises and check out all your social media and news outlets to see what-in-the-world is going on today with your favorite thing—sports. You venture out to your place of work mid-to-late morning, chat with coworkers about the day ahead and get down to business.

You’re on the radio for a mid-day shift as coanchor of “In the Loop,” the most popular sports talk show in Houston, on the city’s premier sports radio station, SportsRadio 610 AM. After your four-hour show, you might attend a sporting event or news conference to be sure you stay on top of the world of sports.

For Cody Stoots, co-anchor of “In the Loop” on SportsRadio 610 AM Houston, his workday is a great day. The self-described “talker” and “entertainer” notes that with all the unpleasant news in the world, his show is “four hours of fun.”

“I don’t have a job—I have a career,” Stoots says.

“My career’s not hard. I get up every morning after watching and reading about sports, movies and pop culture, then for four hours a day, five days a week, I get to talk with my friends and the listeners. At the end of every two weeks, somebody gives me money to do it. It’s not stressful. I’m doing it a disservice calling it a job because it’s probably the most fun you can have making money.”

Stoots’ journey to the No. 6 radio market in the country has been a long and somewhat varied one.

Before he set his sights on being a sportscaster, he wasn’t all that certain what he would end up doing for a living.

“I started out wanting to get a degree in business management,” he says. “If you asked freshman-incollege Cody what he wanted to manage, he would have told you, ‘Oh, just a business’ because if you have a business management degree, there’s always a business to manage. I didn’t really have a direction.

I was three weeks into a business math class and when I walked out of it one day, I thought, ‘I don’t think I want to do this. I don’t know what I want to do, but I don’t want to do this.’

“Later, I was just sitting there, hanging out with some buddies in the dorm. We were talking about Alan Iverson, who is a great basketball player. I made the comment to one of my friends, ‘He was a really, really good high school quarterback—you know, breaking records. He probably could have played Division I basketball and Division I football.’

“My buddy just looked at me and said—it was almost a joke but had real meaning to it—‘Why don’t you just talk about sports for a living?’

“That made perfect sense because I had grown up listening to sports radio and was with familiar with it. I thought, ‘Let’s start on that path.’”

Stoots began working toward his new goal. After trying a “learn-as-you-go-thing,” he visited with a counselor in the College of Media & Communication about coursework. He also worked as a deejay at KTXT-FM, the student radio station, from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m., thinking it would impress the sportscasters at the station. He learned a lot about broadcasting and radio equipment, even in that short stint.

“About three months in, I found out the sports guys didn’t care if I was a deejay or not,” he says. “I started to hang out with those guys. I would sit in on their show once a week and just watch. Then, one of the guys on the show decided he didn’t want to do it anymore. The other two guys didn’t know how to operate the board, so I got my start on that show operating the board, answering the phone and chiming in every now and then. It slowly progressed to where I became a regular member of the show.”

At the end of that semester, KTXT went away, so he started doing podcasts for The Daily Toreador student newspaper.

His initiative paid off in Summer 2009, when he was offered an internship in Houston at a start-up sports radio station. It was then he realized people in sports radio have “the best job in the world” and became even more determined to make it in the business.

Stoots returned to Texas Tech that fall, a broadcast journalism major. He realized he wouldn’t start out on the air, so he began working hard on his

studies and learning to write and report news, in addition to finding out everything he could about radio and TV. He heard about a part-time job at Double T 104.3 (now 97.3) Lubbock.

There he became reacquainted with radio personality Landry Locker, whom he knew at KTXT. Locker advised him on the business and made him realize working in radio was hard with long hours and no guarantees.

It took guts and determination.

The budding broadcaster’s first job at 104.3 was as a back-up producer, sometimes reporting on high school sports. Three months into that job, the morning producer decided he didn’t like the early-morning hours, so the station offered Stoots the position. He worked with sportscasters Chuck Heinz and Chris Snead. It was his fall semester of college, and he only had classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so he took the job.

Six months later, he was producing the mid-day show, “Tech Talk,” with Chris Level and Brian Hanni, at the station. The next year, his team convinced their boss to let them have a Sunday morning show—Stoots was part of it. Then, he was on air once-a-week, for three hours.

Jamie Lent, program director at Double T 97.3, has high praise for the station’s former protege.

“His passion for sports, along with a great work ethic make Cody extremely knowledgeable, which, in turn, makes him entertaining on air,” Lent says. “Personality, preparation and hard work make him good, plus he’s not afraid to think outside the box with new ideas for the station or opinions on the air to stir up conversation.”

With two years of professional producing and on-air work, Stoots applied for a production job in Kansas. He had carefully built a tape of his clips hosting the post-game and Sunday shows in Lubbock. He felt confident he would get the job.

It just wasn’t meant to be.

Rather than feeling rejected, the sportscaster decided to pursue another goal—to land a sports radio job in Houston by age 30.

Thankfully, he had maintained ties with people from from his college internship in Houston. In fact, his friend and mentor Landry Locker played a key role in Stoots’ next career move.

“Actually, what got me to Houston was my buddy Landry,” Stoots says. “He’d been working jobs in Dallas and applied for a job in Houston but didn’t get it. The boss kept his name on record. When the guy reached out to Landry and asked if he wanted the job. Landry was in a better spot than he had been and said, ‘I’m not interested, but I know exactly who is.’ He forwarded my name, and that’s how my dialogue with Houston came about.

“I started talking with the program director at SportsRadio 610 AM in Houston. In the third interview, we finally got on the same page that I’m from Houston and that’s where I grew up. From then on, it was kind of a no-brainer. I’m from Houston and know the guys at the station and the local sports teams. I want to be in Houston. The job was parttime anchor, host and reporter work, but I’d have swept the floors to work for this station. I’d been working at 610 a while and had a couple of opportunities to fill in on radio shifts.

When one of the radio show hosts was leaving, Stoots applied for the job. He interviewed and had a tryout with people at the station including his current co-anchor, John Lopez. After the tryout show, his boss called him into his office and shut the door.

Something serious was taking place.

“He said, ‘Hey, I just wanted to let you know that we’re moving the midday show with John, and we’re going to go to the afternoons. You’re going to be his co-host,’” Stoots says.

“I just kind of stared at him because the words didn’t really hit home. I’m sure my reaction, if I could watch it back, seemed I wasn’t excited, but I was just paralyzed. I said, ‘Thank you.’ I tried not to run across the room and pick him up and squeeze the life out of him.”

For someone who had a goal of just breaking into the Houston sports radio market, in any capacity, by the time he was 30, Stoots had just stretched beyond that bar.

“I’ve been in the business for more than 30 years and I learned early on that the good ones don’t just tell the story, nor do they stop at interpreting the story,” says John Lopez, radio veteran and Stoot’s co-host. “They dig deeper and get people to think about things they never thought of before. They look at topics with a photographer’s eye from a perspective that makes people see it altogether differently. Cody has a superb talent for this.

“During the show, his energy and ability to listen, not just preach, is a skill most his age never master. And of course, no one gets to the No. 6 market in the country without the ability to just flat-out entertain. His wit, self-deprecating humor and improvisational skills make him a favorite of every listener who tunes in.”

Both modest and confident, Stoots is grateful for every opportunity he has had. He also credits both supporters and critics with his success, saying that he has learned from both good and bad comments. According to him, friends in the business and mentors have been invaluable.

“No sports radio hosts get where they are by themselves,” he says.

“Every person and piece along the way shapes them. Every athletic event shapes you. Where you are in your life and how you consume that athletic event shapes you. I owe everybody a tremendous debt of gratitude.”

One person in particular, his mother, reaps most of his thanks. She has been the primary supporter of his ambitions and successes. A single mom, she worked hard to be sure her budding radio personality son had enough money for school and room and board while in college and afterward, as well as some money to have fun.

A big believer in paying it forward, Stoots has become a mentor to members of his station’s street team, young people who put together podcasts.

As he puts it, much like in sports, radio people strive to build up the younger people in their field so they can work alongside them and eventually, fill their shoes.

Determination, talent and hard work are big factors in the success of this broadcaster, who, at 26 years old, took the helm at a renowned and highly reputable sports radio show. However, just being himself plays perhaps an even larger role in his success.

“Cody and I genuinely like each other,” co-anchor Lopez says.

“It’s the kind of relationship that isn’t just a friendly, working relationship, but the kind where we can say anything to each other, knowing it’s honest, sincere and won’t affect how we feel about each other. I really believe it comes through loud and clear over the air. I’ve worked with tons of people over the years, some of the best people I’ve ever known and some I’d never want to know outside the work environment.

“With Cody, the relationship doesn’t change, and the candid discussions never stop. We just happen to go off the air at 2 p.m. With Cody, I’m not sure if it’s a father-son thing, a friend thing or an indefinable thing. But I wouldn’t want anyone else sitting next to me to do a show every day. It works.

“I love the kid. He’ll be around a long time.”

Membership supports

The Texas Tech Alumni Association cultivates loyalty, tradition, service and lifelong relationships.

The reasons people join the Texas Tech Alumni Association may be as varied as the members themselves. Some alumni feel their memberships are a way of staying involved with the university and its traditions. Others join out of loyalty to their alma mater. Many simply want to receive benefits such as the Texas Techsan magazine or gain entry into the Frazier Alumni Pavilion on game day.

However, what members may not realize is that their memberships help support and promote the university. Here’s a look at some of the Alumni Association activities and programs that benefit from your dollars.

Perhaps the largest contribution the Texas Tech Alumni Association makes to university support is in the form of scholarships for deserving students. Through the association’s Endowment Trust, funding is available to honor students with academic scholarships annually, 2016 Scholarship Award Winner Reception including those presented by association chapters.

During the 2015-2016 academic year, the association provided 186 students with $247,000 in funds for every scholarship that TTAA Endowment Trust was responsible for administering. The Texas Tech Alumni Association National Board of Directors voted to give $900,000 to Endowment Trust for future scholarships.

The application process is streamlined online. Interested students can apply as early as Jan. 1 until April 15. A group of Texas Tech and local community members help evaluate the applications. After the recipients are chosen, the money for their scholarships is applied to their student accounts Aug. 1, in time for the fall semester. Awardees are expected to attend a reception in September that honors them and their benefactors.

Scholarships

Recognizing folks who make our university great is important.

Each spring, the Alumni Association presents Distinguished Alumni awards to notable alumni who have been nominated and voted upon by a committee. The award is considered the highest honor bestowed by the university.

The Friday of Homecoming week each year, four current Texas Tech University employees are recognized as “Top Techsans” during a luncheon. The honorees, who are nominated by university staff or faculty members, are selected by committee.

That same day, at the annual “A Matador Evening” dinner, the association honors an individual or couple who have made “a positive impact on the university through their generosity, professional accomplishments and acts of service” with the Lauro F. Cavazos Award. The honor is named after Texas Tech University President Cavazos, who received the first award in 1987.

The association presents the Distinguished Service award at the same event. Established in 1977, the honor recognizes outstanding service to Texas Tech University or the Alumni Association. Alumni, friends of the university, as well as current and former employees of the university are eligible.

Recognizing academic accomplishments is another major goal of the association. Each spring, at Faculty Convocation, the organization gives “New Faculty Awards” to one faculty member from each academic college with four or fewer years of service. The colleges select their honorees.

Each semester, graduating seniors with the highest grade point averages in their colleges receive plaques announcing their accomplishments. The plaques are presented at commencement.

Highest Ranking Graduate Plaque

Excellence Grants Texas Tech Alumni Association awards annually three $10,000 monetary grants to Texas Tech-affiliated groups with new or existing initiatives that merit support. The TTAA Excellence Grant Committee reviews applications and makes recommendations to the National Board, which approves the recipients. The purpose of these grants is to assist faculty and/or staff in their efforts to improve educational opportunities and foster innovation, develop collaborations, promote awareness of Texas Tech University and enhance its reputation and to support the university’s Tier One efforts.

On a much smaller scale than the Excellence Grants, the association has helped faculty members on an as-needed basis with less costly gifts such as purchasing laptop computers to be used while teaching abroad as well as supporting attendance at academic conferences.

“The Texas Tech Alumni Association will unite all alumni and friends, motivating them to support and promote the university, and will provide programs that benefit the members to the fullest.”

Legacy Program Alumni Association membership no longer is limited just to students (Student Alumni Association) or alumni.

Now, thanks to the Legacy Program, future Red Raiders can learn the culture of Texas Tech University long before they are ready for college.

The Legacy Program has been popular since its inception in 2010. A “Legacy” is defined as the child or grandchild of a current member of the Texas Tech Alumni Association at the Century Level ($100 or more annually). Legacy membership is free to these children, who can belong to the program from birth to 18. Age-appropriate gifts with a Texas Tech University theme are sent to Legacies on birthdays every two to three years.

The program engages future Red Raiders and helps them learn university traditions. Membership also puts the young members on the university’s radar, which may be helpful when it is time to apply for college.

Presidential Partnership Several years ago, the Office of the President of Texas Tech University teamed up with the Alumni Association to present complimentary one-year association memberships to all graduating seniors.

Student Leader Reception The Alumni Association hosts an annual Student Leadership Reception to honor campus leaders. Presidents of campus organizations, as well as fraternities and sororities and athletic student leaders are invited to the event, where they receive a certificate recognizing their service. The event also gives the students an opportunity to mingle with each other.

Without the support of members of the Texas Tech Alumni Association, the organization would not be able to accomplish nearly as much as it does to assist with university endeavors and student and faculty support. Every dollar is appreciated and careful thought goes into how it is used.

A

rriving at Hotel Turkey likely means you’ve left behind the city, and hopefully, some of your worries. This place takes patrons a step back in time, before traffic jams, iPhones and social media. They offer fabulous food, comfortable rooms and smiling faces. Fridays and Saturdays usher live music on the patio or the enclosed front porch.

Hotel Turkey, located in Turkey, Texas, in Northwest Texas’ Hall County, is the longest continuously running hotel in Texas.

Opened in 1927, the hotel has had a number of different owners during its 90-year history, but has always been a hub for gettogethers large and small. Tina Clay Carson ’94 and Pat Carson ’91 purchased the establishment in July 2015 with plans to refurbish the hotel so it can continue to serve as a meeting, eating, dancing and staying place.

The Carsons never planned to be hoteliers, but when the opportunity presented itself, the couple couldn’t resist the challenge. They had been at the hotel one evening in early 2015,

The couple jumped into the hotel business with no prior experience. What they brought to the table was lots of love for their community, superb comfort food and Texas music. Tina is a teacher at Valley Independent School District and Pat, along with being the mayor of Turkey, owns Pat Carson Insurance, an agency that offers coverage for livestock; farm and ranch; multi-peril and crop; commercial; homeowner’s; life; auto and health. Son Parker works with his steers, which are part of an FFA project.

visiting with Cody Bell, a long-time rancher in Hall County and owner of Hotel Turkey, about how they thought it might be fun to own the historic hotel.

“A few months later, Cody came to us and asked if we’d like to buy the hotel,” says Pat. The hotel is not Tina and Pat’s sole endeavor. Tina teaches computer technology half-time five miles west of Turkey at Turkey-Quitaque Independent School District—also called Valley School. Pat owns Pat Carson Insurance, a full-service insurance agency he established in 1992. Pat has also been the mayor of Turkey since 2001. They also have a cow-calf operation and have three children: Walker, a sophomore at Texas Tech; Ryleigh, a senior at Valley; and Parker, a freshman at Valley.

“We might have jumped into this about five years too soon,” jokes Tina of running a hotel and restaurant before all of their kids left to attend college. “But when we had the chance to buy this place, we took it.”

Tina was raised in Turkey, her family farmed cotton, peanuts and watermelon and also raised cattle. Pat was raised outside El Paso in Clint, Texas, and followed in his two older sisters’ footsteps to Texas Tech. The couple met because Pat’s two older sisters, Lisa Carson Campbell ’82 (an animal business major who played basketball for the Lady Raiders on a scholarship) and Jay Carson Proctor ’85 (a clothing textiles and merchandising major), both married men from, and live in, Turkey. Pat visited his sisters often, and with a population of less than 500, it was inevitable the two would meet.

Pat moved to Turkey around the same time Tina left to attend Texas Tech, in 1991. They dated all throughout her college years and married in 1993. Tina majored in food technology and Pat minored in plant and soil science and received his degree in agricultural education.

BAPTISM BY FIRE

The Carsons purchased Hotel Turkey with the knowledge that it needed upgrades. Shortly after closing on the property, they were approached by The Travel Channel about being featured in a series that introduced viewers to towns named after food.

“My family had a trip planned to go to Maui in August (2015),” says Pat. “We found out The Travel Channel wanted to come film the hotel, and we ended up having 12 days before we left for Hawaii to get the hotel ready for the film crew.”

Folks who live in small towns will tell you that everybody knows everybody else’s business, and in this case, that truism worked well for the new hotel owners.

“We had so many friends and family members who came to help us get this place ready,” says Pat. “We had to tear out the tile in the lobby and, I don’t know what it was originally put down with, but we had to chisel it up a bit at a time. It was hard work.”

Pat says after days and days of renovation work that ran late into the night, he decided he’d head home early—for just one evening—for some much-needed rest.

“I got home and realized I forgot something here, so I drove back, and I found several people here chipping up tile,” he says. “I asked, ‘What are y’all doing?’ and they said, ‘Well, this has to get done, doesn’t it?’”

His night of rest turned into another long night of work, but is also an example of how the Turkey community comes together to help neigh-

Part of the planning process for Pat and Tina involved traveling to similar hotels in rural Texas. “We visited the Limpia Hotel in Fort Davis, the Paisano in Marfa, the Holland in Alpine and the Gage Hotel in Marathon,” says Tina. “One of the places we went did have music, of course Marfa has music everywhere. Most of the things we noticed that we liked was that most of these old hotels tried to keep it original.

They didn’t look brand new…

We liked clean, white linens and wanted to maintain the historic feel. The other thing we really noticed (at these other hotels) were the outdoor places—somewhere for people to gather. There’s not a lot to do in Turkey, so we wanted an outdoor area, somewhere for people to sit and visit.”

bors. Because of all the help, most of Hotel Turkey was ready when The Travel Channel crew arrived for filming.

The hotel has 14 rooms and they’ve renovated six of those so far. The Carsons plan to renovate the entire hotel without incurring debt. Because Hotel Turkey was listed in 1991 on the National Register of Historic Places, they have maintained most of the hotel’s original 1920s feel. They have offered a nod to modern convenience—the hotel offers Wi-Fi and, in their renovated rooms, there is state-of-the-art heating/air conditioning and flat screen televisions.

In addition to having 14 rooms, the hotel serves breakfast seven days a week, lunch six days a week (every day except Monday) and dinner on Friday and Saturday nights.

Both Pat and Tina say they’ve always loved to entertain, and they’ve succeeded in offering a menu packed with delicious food like burgers, sandwiches, chicken fried steak, fried chicken and barbecue. It’s not unusual to find Pat manning the smoker when barbecue is on the menu. Everything is made fresh at the hotel; even the desserts have a special touch.

“My mom makes all of the desserts, usually chocolate fudge pie and different fruit crisps,” says Pat, whose parents relocated to Turkey from Clint since all three of their children live there. “Sometimes Tina will make chocolate cake.”

While the hospitality industry is new to the Carsons, the concept of hospitality is not. On any given day, they know many of their customers who come in to dine, and they warmly greet them by name. That kindness isn’t reserved for the locals, though—all guests are treated like old friends.

As for learning the restaurant and hotel business, they’ve been flexible in their learning curve. They’re open about a lot of their efforts being trial and error.

“A lot of our best ideas have evolved with my brother-in-law (Neal, Tina’s sister Julie’s husband) and me sitting on the porch, having a beer, pitching ideas back and forth,” says Pat. “One of those ideas was to have musicians come every now and then.”

Both Pat and Tina love music, and having live acts offers something extra to guests while also honoring the town’s most famous resident, Bob Wills, the King of Western Swing.

So, while they didn’t exactly plan to become a live music venue, that’s how it turned out.

“Initially we had a friend give us some names of musicians in the Lubbock area who’d come play here,” says Pat. “Now, we have acts from all around the area, from Lubbock to Amarillo, who call me asking if we’ll book them to play.”

So almost every Friday and Saturday night, weather permitting, there’s live music on the back patio of the hotel. If the weather doesn’t permit, they set up on the enclosed sun porch in the front of the hotel.

Another draw is the fried fish, served on Fridays only, which Tina says is their most popular menu item. Both Fridays and Saturdays will find Pat and brother-in-law Neal manning the grill on the hotel’s back patio, turning out perfectly prepared ribeyes.

The Carsons have had many friends and family members make their business successful, one in particular is Ricky Hughes.

“Ricky comes to the hotel to work like it’s a job, and he’s just our friend and a volunteer,” says Tina. “He helps in any way he can, whether he’s greeting guests or refilling our customers’ drinks. If I’m not able to be here to check in guests, he will do that for me. We’re very fortunate.”

It’s a rustic little building, bricked and then covered by plaster, and serves as an additional location to host dinners and family reunions. Across the street to the east the Carsons own 72 RV spots for visitors who bring their own campers.

LET’S TALK TURKEY

It’s a tiny town that lies at the crossroads of Texas Highways 86 and 70. Its name was officially changed o Turkey in 1893 with the construction of a post offi e— previously it was Turkey Roost. In 1928 the Fort Worth and Denver railway built rails through Turkey. The railroad brought with it new settlers, farmers, who began to purchase land from the ranchers in order to grow wheat and cotton. From its inception to today, the culture of Turkey and Hall County is largely agrarian.

The community, though small, is still as close-knit as ever, with a long-standing culture of independence and pride in their history of ranching and farming. In 1955, it was home to slightly more than 1,000 people. Today, the population has dipped to about 400.

Named for the Rio Grande turkeys that inhabit the area, Turkey is a popular destination for hunters, who can pursue not only the area’s namesake, wild turkeys, but also quail, deer and feral hogs. Outdoor aficionados flock o nearby Caprock Canyons State Park to hike, fish and cam .

It’s a place rich in history—the wide openness of the Western half of Texas was a draw to independent spirits who weren’t afraid to take risks. This vast region of northwest Texas was roamed for thousands of years by various Indian tribes, the last to live in the area being the Apache Indians, who were run out by the Comanche Indians.

By the late 1800s immense beef cattle ranches had been established across North and West Texas. These ranches extended across hundreds of thousands of acres and embodied the Texas reputation for wildness: it was an untamed land inhabited by wild cows and wilder cowboys.

Ranch dances were popular in the late 1800s through the early 1900s. Musicians would visit local ranches, a spread was set out and neighbors came from miles around to dance the night away. Turkey was once home to Bob Wills, who is credited with creating a new style of music, Texas swing, and started the band Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. Wills learned to play the fiddle alongside his ather in Turkey.

Though the enormous ranches of the 1800s have largely disappeared, travelers passing through the region can still enjoy miles and miles of uninterrupted countryside.

The Caprock Canyons State Park, just a few miles down the road from Turkey, offers hiking, fishing and camping opportunities and is also home to the official Texas State Bison Herd

So, you’re wondering, if this is such a remote place, what brings people to Hotel Turkey? It lies in close proximity, 15 miles east, of Caprock Canyons State Park, which is home to the official state bison herd of Texas. Caprock Canyons is at the lower end of the series of canyons and plateaus that start at Palo Duro Canyon State Park near Canyon, Texas. Many parkgoers opt to eat and stay at Hotel Turkey.

The route from the Dallas-Fort Worth area to skiing in New Mexico and Colorado cuts right through Hall county and Turkey, which makes it a great stopping point going each way.

Perhaps what Turkey is best known for is Bob Wills Day, held the last weekend of every April—2017 marks the celebration’s 46th year.

Thousands converge on Turkey for the festivities that include live music, barbecue, a parade and Western Swing dance.

The best reason to hit the Hotel Turkey: it’s in a quiet and remote locale. It offers a chance to unplug and unwind in a place where the wildest things encountered are the canyons that crisscross the landscape and the nearby buffalo.

Saddle Tramps: 80 Years of Tradition

The weekend of Nov. 4, current and past members of the group held a reunion to recognize 80 years of serving Texas Tech. The weekend also provided an opportunity to celebrate school mascot Raider Red’s 45th birthday.

Arch Lamb, a student, started the organization in 1936. He had been elected cheerleader by his dormitory without his knowledge. Partly in answer to school administrators’ concerns about overly enthusiastic school spirit at sporting events, Lamb sought to create a group to promote goodwill on campus.

“He approached two representative men from each division of the College, explained his plan and found them receptive to the ideas,” says Ruth Horn Andrews in “The First Thirty Years: A History of Texas Technological College, 1925-1955.” “Each of the eight in turn chose two other young men from his division. Someone suggested that they call themselves Saddle Tramps. They adopted a uniform of dark trousers, black shoes and ties and red shirts with the words Saddle Tramps sewed across the back.”

Lamb chose the name “Saddle Tramps” based on the young cowboys who used to roam from ranch to ranch, doing good work and helping and then moving on to the next task. He viewed the service group as having the same sort of opportunity to benefit the university while students and then move on to the next phase of their lives.

Andrews notes that in addition to leading cheers at games, in those early days, the group put together bonfires and held welcoming receptions for visiting teams. They also encouraged good sportsmanship among the student body and decorated goal posts. They taught freshmen the school traditions, including the school songs.

The new organization also helped found the Arbor Day tradition on campus in 1938. At their urging, college president Bradford Knapp allowed students to skip class in order to help plant thousands of trees and shrubs on campus.

Although the group has evolved over time, the heart of the group remains intact.

Thanks to the positive tone set by Lamb’s leadership, the Saddle Tramps have maintained a reputation as a stellar organization that is well-respected on campus and beyond. They are student leaders who promote the university and set a good example for other students.

Many early activities continue today as traditions. Saddle Tramps still don red-andblack clothing with the words Saddle Tramps stitched on the backs of their shirts. New members of the group learn school history and traditions as part of their pledge process and, in turn, teach new members.

Preparation for campus events is a big part of the organization. A group of the Saddle Tramps, “Midnight Raiders,” decorate the entire campus, including the Will Rogers and Soapsuds statue, with red-and-black crepe paper streamers before home football games, a task that takes several hours. “Bangin’ Bertha,” the Saddle Tramp bell, is rung on the sidelines of football games, and the group also rings the Victory Bells in the Administration Building tower after team wins. They also fire guns at the endzone after kickoff and field goals.

They also attend basketball and baseball games and help with track meets. Saddle Tramps frequently are called upon by the university local businesses to attend and promote various events.

The organization also leads a light parade prior to the lighting of campus at the annual Carol of Lights.

A highly visible part of the Saddle Tramps is the school mascot Raider Red. In 1971, college football officials disallowed live animal mascots, including the Masked Rider, from attending sporting events and away games. Saddle Tramp Jim Gaspard refused to let Texas Tech be without a mascot, so he created a costume patterned after artist Dirk West’s cartoon character Raider Red. Gaspard wore the costume to games that year, and it was a hit.

Since that year, Raider Red has remained a highly recognizable symbol of Red Raider school spirit, a job shared with the High Riders organization. Before attending all sorts of campus and community events, Saddle Tramps and High Riders audition to be Raider Red each year, and four are chosen to play the mascot.

The identity of the people who play Raider Red is a secret.

Many of the good things Saddle Tramps do to promote their school are not widely known because their goal is not to seek publicity, just to provide good outcomes. However, several campus landmarks exist thanks to the generosity of the organization. After Texas Tech was admitted to the Southwest Conference in 1956, the group worked toward the installation of the Southwest Conference Circle, a bonfire circle near the Intramural Gym, later known as the Men’s Gym. The landmark was later moved to east of the new Petroleum Engineering Building.

By 1964, after a 10-year campaign, the organization raised enough money to pay for the fountain that greets visitors to campus just beyond the Broadway entrance to campus off of University Avenue. The large granite school seal at the entrance was funded by the group and installed in 1969.

With so much momentum behind them and so much more to gain, the Saddle Tramps and their loyalty to Texas Tech will remain an important part of the university for at least another 80 years.

WHAT WAS YOUR MAJOR AND CLASS YEAR AT TECH, PLUS ANY OTHER DEGREES YOU MAY HAVE EARNED? I graduated from Texas Tech in 1968 with

a major in zoology and a minor in chemistry—standard fare for a pre-med in those days. I earned my M.D. in 1972 from Baylor College of Medicine, my neurology residency and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, and served a Fellowship on the U.S.-U.S.S.R. Health Exchange Program to the University of Moscow (1974-75).

WHERE ARE YOU EMPLOYED AND WHAT IS YOUR POSITION? I own and

operate Medicine Spirit Ranch and am retired from my previous occupation as a clinical and research neurologist.

WHAT ARE THE NAMES OF YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS? I have been happily

married to the former Trudy Plunket (Class of 1969) for almost 48 years. I have two children: Andy, who is an attorney in Austin, and Katie, who works as associate director for Community and Professional Education at Southern Methodist University. Our two grandchildren, Ramsey, age 13, and Graham, age 10, benefit from the TTAA Legacy program and hopefully will become Red Raiders.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES IN WHICH YOU WERE INVOLVED AS A STUDENT AT TECH:

I participated in track and field under Coach Vernon Hilliard until my junior year when the rigors of the pre-med curriculum and injury prevented me from continuing with track. I belonged to Phi Eta Sigma and attribute my love of literature and writing to the remarkable honors English program at Tech.

WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR FONDEST MEMORIES FROM YOUR TECH DAYS?

Among my fondest memories were athletic events, including lettering at the Southwest Conference Track and Field Championships and attending the pageantry of the Texas Tech football games. I also reflect warmly on a remarkable Tech computer date where I met my wife. I continue to be amazed by the expanding and ever more beautiful Tech campus.

I also love ranching. The interaction with the cows and horses, enjoyment of nature and the changing seasons, working with Border collies, and the challenge of running a ranch provide satisfaction. I also love to travel, read, blog, volunteer and golf.

WHAT CHARACTER TRAIT DO YOU VALUE HIGHLY IN AN INDIVIDUAL? Authenticity.

IF YOU COULD ASK FIVE OR SIX PEOPLE TO YOUR HOME FOR AN EVENING, WHO WOULD THEY BE?

Since the question was not limited to those still living, I would invite my great grandfather Thaddeus S. Hutton and my great grandmother Elizabeth Ragan Hutton. Thad was born and raised on a farm in northern Virginia, lived as a young teen through the Civil War, moved to west Texas where he worked in the 1870s as a cowboy. How I would love to know if my great grandfather who worked on the P8 ranch rode the Great Western Trail and had interaction with the historical figures of that age.

I would also invite my former American Field Service foreign exchange brother, Niyazi Öktem, along with his wife to learn firsthand their circumstances. I have worried about Niyazi’s safety in Turkey given the thousands of academics already placed in custody.

Finally, I would delve into the past again to invite Winston Churchill and his wife, Clementine. Winston exemplified stellar statesmanship, dogged persistence, and sheer unadulterated and raw intelligence. His customary humor would undoubtedly keep the dinner lively and the libations flowing.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU’VE ENJOYED SEEING OCCUR RECENTLY AT TEXAS TECH? I’m delighted by Tech’s steady academic progress. Tier One Research

proved beneficial for Tech’s reputation, but even more significant would be attaining membership in the American Association of Universities. My hat is off to President Lawrence Schovanec for making AAU a goal.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BOOK? “Doctor Zhivago” by Boris Pasternak. This book provided an inspirational model for a humanistic physician with a literary bent.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE? (OR, WHAT IS THE LAST MOVIE YOU SAW?) The Godfather, as one wag stated all of life’s major questions are ad-

Mathematics) Venice, Florida, has written many books about construction cost-estimating. More than 200,000 copies of his books are in print. He is working on a new edition of “Roofing: Construction & Estimating,” at the request of his publisher, Craftsman Book Company. The book has been used on state tests in Florida, North Carolina, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, Tennessee, Utah, South Carolina, Virginia and Illinois.

Atcheson became interested in construction cost-estimating when he worked with a general contractor who trained him to estimate project costs. Several years later, he taught a course in the topic in the Department of Engineering Technology (Construction Technology) at Texas Tech. When he wrote his first book, “Estimating Earthwork Quantities,” his father, Lubbock architect James E. Atcheson, a 1936 Texas Tech graduate, illustrated it. That volume remains in print.

Although his other books are too numerous to list, he also has written an online book about coping with losing a pet, “The Little Dog that Died,” available online at http://bullybaby.com/Dog_Heaven/dh_1.html. Atcheson is an avid fan and owner of English bulldogs. He also is a talented musician and a prolific wood and stone sculptor who has created likenesses of his dogs and other things of interest to him such as Raider Red. Why Audra Tapperson replanted roots in Lubbock

Audra Tapperson cares for 15-year-old patient Cassidy.

When Audra Tapperson talks about her decision to go into the health care field, she likens it to going into the family business. Nurses, administrators and medical professionals mark her lineage, but it was a personal experience that ultimately led her into the world of home health.

“I had an accident when I was 16 years old, and I was told I wouldn’t walk again. It took two years, but I walked again,” Tapperson said. “It’s hard to find hope in certain situations, and I was determined to make an impact in the nursing field.”

Tapperson became a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) and was working toward becoming a registered nurse (RN) when her family felt a calling to leave Lubbock and move out-of-state to do ministry work. While in Virginia, Tapperson continued her work in health care, but found it to be very different from her Texas beginnings.

“The world of LVN doesn’t get as much honor there as it does in Texas,” she said. “It was very hard to request a certain amount of money for my skill. I was not considered a skilled nurse, and that was alarming when it came to my career. It was a very different experience than what I experienced in the Lubbock community.”

Because of this, Tapperson and her growing family replanted roots in Lubbock a short time later.

“The main goal was to go back to school,” she said. “We have very highly accredited schools here with the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, South Plains College and Covenant School of Nursing. I felt comfortable being back with some of the people that formed the foundations of nursing in me.”

Aside from familiarity, there were other factors that played into the Tapperson family’s decision to return to Lubbock.

“The cost of living on the East Coast is probably twice what it is here, and the income for a middle-class family is not sufficient without two jobs,” Tapperson said. “I also drove 55 minutes to work one way, every day, five days a week. It did get tasking. For the cost of living and the pay, Lubbock is a very comfortable place to live.”

Tapperson now works as a private duty nurse for BrightStar Care, taking care of a 15-year-old patient and going to school with her each day.

Tapperson pays a visit to the BrightStar Care office.

“It’s my goal to give her the best experience she can have when she’s with me,” Tapperson said. “We have a one-stop shop at BrightStar. We have a whole team that coordinates with your home for optimal care. There’s a certain tone, a sign and the look on a patient’s face when you know you’ve gotten it just perfect. I get to be a part of that.”

Easily navigated and boasting an average commute time of just 17 minutes, from a logistics standpoint, Lubbock is ideal for home health care.

“Practically, the homes are easy to find,” Tapperson said.

“And Lubbock has completed some of the highways they were working on when we left. You start having this feeling of ‘I’m here in the city.’ It’s incredible what’s happened here.”

Aside from the growth within the Lubbock community, the city’s low cost of living is something that Adrienne Cozart, senior vice president of human resources at University Medical Center Health System, touts to prospective employees.

“If you want a great place to live and place to raise your kids, come to Lubbock,” Cozart said. “It’s not a metropolitan city, but it offers a lot of the same amenities as a large city.

It has a low cost of living, a family friendly community and opportunities for all age groups.”

Perhaps that’s why more and more Texas Tech alumni and former Lubbock residents are finding that it’s the right time to give Lubbock another look.

“With top-rated schools, more house for your dollar, great restaurants, a growing art scene and a variety of entertainment options, Lubbock has become one of the top cities for opportunities according to Forbes,” said John Osborne, president and CEO of the Lubbock Economic Development Alliance (LEDA).

One area of particular opportunity is in the health care field.

“The wages are very competitive,” said Lonny Kane, owner of BrightStar Care. “For the cost of living here, the wages are very good and a nurse can live comfortably. Yes, we have several nursing schools in this area, but as with the rest of the country, we still have a need for nurses. In Lubbock, you can truly work in just about every area of nursing you can think of.”

And to make it easier for professionals to discover available positions, LEDA has stepped in to act as a conduit between job seekers and businesses.

“One way we’re doing this is through a web portal– return2lbk.org–that serves as a one-stop shop featuring concentrated, valuable job openings,” said Christine Allen, director of workforce development for LEDA. Not only does LEDA provide information and links to a large number of health care-focused openings, they also provide links to other jobs available in the Lubbock community.

“Fortune.com recently listed Lubbock as one of the top 10 cities to find a job,” Osborne said. “In the six years that my wife, Sunni, and I have lived in Lubbock, we’ve come across so many wonderful people who moved back because they wanted not only to find a good job, but a good community. That’s why we’re in Lubbock.”

As for the Tappersons, they have no plans to leave any time soon.

“For me it’s just that feeling of being home,” she said.

“I understand the regulations, and I connect with the company. Lubbock isn’t like you remember it if you’ve been gone for a while. It hasn’t lost that home feeling, but it’s gotten a facelift.”

alumni news GLEN CARY , Dallas, died Dec. 24. He grew up in Pampa and Brownfield, Texas, prior to playing football one season for Kilgore Junior College on a football scholarship. He then served as a master sergeant, first sergeant and sergeant major in the United States Army in Korea, where he was decorated for valor and meritorious service. After time held a POW camp, he went to the Osaka General Hospital in Osaka, Japan, where he was treated for the aftermath of being frozen in 60 degrees below zero temperatures at the Chosen Reservoir, as well as other ailments.

After being honorably discharged, he enrolled at Texas Tech University, graduating in 1956 with a BBA in finance. He was president of the Student Association, the Junior Class, Saddle Tramps and Phi Delta Theta. He was a member of Delta Sigma Pi and the Debate Team and vice commander of the Tech Vets.

He served as national president of the Texas Tech Alumni Association, Old Red Club and Texas Tech Specialties and was a member of the Chairman’s Council and Finance Advisory Council. He received the Texas Tech Distinguished Alumnus Service Award in 1985.

For more than 50 years, he served Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, holding positions such as international president, province president and survey commission member and chairman. He received the fraternity’s Legion of Honor award in 1990. The Phi Delta Theta Outstanding Colony Award is named the T. Glen Cary Award.

His business career was in Arkansas for 20 years and in Texas. He served as vice chairman of Preferred Risk Life Assurance Co. in Fayetteville, Arkansas; vice president of Union Life Insurance Co. and vice chairman of the First Pyramid Life Insurance Co., chairman of First Pyramid Mortgage Co. and president and chairman of the Nile Corp. in Little Rock. He served as a trustee of the Arkansas Independent College Fund and director of the Arkansas Association of Independent Colleges. Cary has served as the president and CEO of Foster Financial Group, partner in the Foster Cary Corp,, Foster Cary Agency, Foster Cary Financial Planners, Planned Benefits and Foster Commercial. His postings as an Air Force officer took him around the country, to Japan, and then back to study electrical engineering at Texas Tech. While a student, he also was an assistant football coach for Texas Tech.

Travis received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Texas Tech in 1964 and moved to Washington, D.C., and then Kirkland AFB in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he served as chief of the Missiles, Space and Communications Branch. He retired from the Air Force in 1971 and returned to Texas Tech to join the faculty of the electrical engineering department. He collaborated with faculty members, introduced new research projects and equipment, taught classes and served the department in numerous other ways. He retired in1993. In 2003, he was awarded membership in the Texas Tech Electrical Engineering Academy.

CRYSTAL BLANKENSHIP , a sophomore chemical engineering major; ALVIN KIM , a junior computer science major; BRAXTON G. MANLEY , a junior marketing and management major; and SABA NAFEES , a doctoral student in mathematical biology, have been named fellows.

The 2017 Texas Tech fellows are among 169 students chosen from 49 higher education institutions in four countries. Since joining the UIF program in 2015, Texas Tech has had 14 fellows, including the four students from this year.

Students in the program undergo intensive, six-week online training to help them conduct in-depth analyses of their campus ecosystem and brainstorm solutions and new ideas. They then travel to the annual University Innovation Fellows Silicon Valley Meetup and take part in events and conferences throughout the year.

THE TEX A S TEC H University Ranch Horse Team won the overall title at the 2016 Stock Horse of Texas (SHOT) World Championships in Abilene in December. The team had a successful spring competition when the Ranch Horse Team competed in six shows, capturing four championships and two reserve championships, including the team’s seventh national title at the Collegiate Nationals in Sweetwater in April.

JAYTON BACA , a junior, captured the Non-Pro All-Around title with 140 points. MORGAN HOLMES , a sophomore, took sixth in the all-around and was the No. 2 collegiate competitor behind Baca. CASSIDY COLTRAIN , a senior, finished fourth in the Limited Non-Pro All-Around category and second among collegiate riders with 184.01 points. ASHLEY ADAMS , a senior, was third among collegiate riders.

In the Novice category, CHANCE CAMPBELL , a junior, took second place both overall and among collegiate riders with 280 points.

T H E T E X A S T E C H University Meat Judging Team in the Department of Animal & Food Sciences in the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources was shy four points defending its national championship after wins in all six competitions leading up to the national championships.

KYE SCHWARTZ , a junior, won the individual crown; it was the second straight year a Texas Tech competitor won individual honors. JESSICA HUMPHREY , a senior, finished eighth overall with 944 points while COLE PERKINS , a junior, was 10th.

All three earned first-team All-American status while TOMMY FLETCHER , a junior, was named second-team All-America.

Andrew DeJesse, museum science graduate student, received the Carolyn Garrett Pool Outstanding Museum Studies Student Award. In the student poster competition, KATY SCHMIDT and KATHLEEN WILSON , museum science graduate students, placed first. KATHRYN FAIRCLOTH and JESSICA STEPP , graduate students in interdisciplinary studies and museum science, respectively, took second place.

This is the third consecutive year a Texas Tech student has won the Outstanding Museum Studies Student Award and the fifth consecutive year a Texas Tech team has placed first in the poster competition.
