Texas Tech in the News

By Bill Dean, Executive VIce President and CEO, Texas Tech Alumni Association Texas Tech has been in the national news several times in the last six months and, in several cases, it hasn't been the type of publicity we seek.

First of all, a story that broke locally back in the fall turned into a national news event. It was announced Jan. 30 that the U.S. Department of Justice has launched an inquiry into a complaint filed against Dr. Michael Dini, a professor of biology. The complaint alleges that Dini is practicing religion-based discrimination against students seeking letters of recommendation from him.

At the time, Dini's university-based Web site stated, "If you set up an appointment to discuss the writing of a letter of recommendation, I will ask you: 'How do you think the human species originated?' If you cannot truthfully and forthrightly affirm a scientific answer to this question, then you should not seek my recommendation for admittance to further education in the biomedical sciences."

The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported in the fall that Micah Spradling, a freshman, dropped Dini's course and transferred from Tech to Lubbock Christian University as a result of Dini's requirements.

"I left Tech as the result of the fact that you had to believe in evolution and deny your faith," Spradling said. He has since returned after taking the biology course at LCU. Pat Campbell, Texas Tech general counsel, told me that, "I would think the university can't tell a professor what his criteria has to be for letters of recommendation.

The first time a university dictates criteria for these types of matters the bridge would come unbolted."

Fonner President David Schmidly wrote a guest editorial in the A -1 in which he said, "While I would not use the same criteria for writing letters of recommendation, I do respect and defend Dini's right to hold his opinions. I defend this right because he and only he writes the letter of recommendation."

This has obviously generated considerable controversy and criticism of the university. Basically this is not an evolution

versus creationism issue. The issue is whether or not a university professor has a right to establish his own criteria for writing letters of recommendation.

Professor Dini is widely respected in the field of biology. He is considered one of Texas Tech's best professors, having won teaching awards and generally getting very good ratings from his students.

Dini feels that the media has misinterpreted his criteria. As a result, he has changed it to read as follows: "If you set up an appointment to discuss the writing of a letter of recommendation, I will ask you: 'How do you account for the scientific original of the human species?' If you will not give a scientific answer to this question, then you should not seek my recommendation."

Further, Dini states: "The designated criteria for a letter of recommendation should not be misconstrued as discriminatory against anyone's personal beliefs. Rather, the goals of these requirements are to help insure that a student who wishes my recommendation use scientific thinking to answer scientific questions."

I think it is clear from these actions that Professor Dini is not attempting to get students to compromise their religious beliefs. He simply wants them to be able to explain the theory of evolution. I don't think this position is unreasonable.

Then there is the story of Thomas Butler, M.D., who was arrested in January and charged with lying about missing plague bacteria under his supervision in tbe Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

Butler, who was chief of the infectious diseases division of the Department of Internal Medicine at Tech's medical school, has been involved in plague research for more than 25 years and is internationally recognized in the field.

He reported that 30 vials of an agent that could be developed into bubonic plague were missing from a laboratory on Jan. 13.

This report set off a media frenzy that made national news. Federal, state and local authorities began a search for the missing vials. Butler was arrested on Jan. 15. He told authorities that he had made a

"misjudgment" by not telling them that he had accidentally destroyed the vials.

Butler was released from jail on Jan. 21 after agreeing to a set of conditions proposed by Assistant U. S. Attorney Dick Baker. His case is pending, and his attorney, Floyd Holder has said his client is innocent.

Obviously, there are unanswered questions about this case. How were the vials destroyed? Why did he lie to authorities?

Since the incident, a number of his neighbors, friends and colleagues have come forward to testify on his behalf. He has been described as a good family man, a good neighbor, a patriotic American and a good doctor.

One letter to the editor of the A-1 stated: "My son is tenninally ill. Dr. Butler has been his physician for more than 15 years. The fact that my son is still alive is due to Dr. Butler's hard work and caring attitude. Dr. Butler always took time to listen, even though many times it was not about physical health. He always made sure we were given test results as quickly as possible and requests were answered.

His ' laid-back' manner and sincere attitude are very reassuring."

This publicity was not the kind you want for your university, especially when it was fust reported that vials of an agent that can cause bubonic plaque were missing. Hopefully, there will be a reasonable and logical conclusion to a very unsettling event.

Finally, there is the tragic Columbia disaster that has direct links to Texas Tech and Lubbock. Col. Rick Husband was the mission commander. Also on the flight was Navy Commander William (Willie) McCool, a 1977 graduate of Lubbock Coronado High School.

Husband was a 1980 mechanical engineering graduate of Texas Tech. His wife, the former Evelyn Neely, was a 1980 telecommunications graduate. I would refer you to a story about this remarkable individual by Jean Ann Cantore on page 34 of the January-February 2000 edition of the Texas Techsan. News The College of Architecture at Texas Tech was asked in 2000 by the Historic American Buildings Survey to map out the dimensions of the Statue of Liberty. During 2000 and 2001 , Texas Tech paired up with the HABS and the Liberty Island Park officials to map out Lady Liberty so that it could be recreated in case it is somehow destroyed. Tech was chosen because of its three-dimensional laser scanning equipment, a Cyrax 2500. The laser can take up to 800 measurements per second. After the points are measured, the computer forms a skin over more than l 00 million points at about a quarter of an inch apart. The laser images will be used to create detailed drawings, and these, along with large-format photographs and detailed histories, will be deposited in the Library of Congress. Tech Board of Regents Approves University's New Strategic Plan

By Sebastian Kitchen Lubbock Avalanche-Journal A road map to guide the Texas Tech University System through the next five years was approved and set in place by the board of regents Dec. 13.

The strategic plan is complete with benchmarks, goals and guidelines that will be updated and evaluated annually and can be tracked online at www.ttu.edu/stratplan.

The five broad goals in the plan are growth, diversity, people, partnerships and recognition.

Chancellor David S mith said those fi ve words concisely translate the system 's "purpose and vision" and clarifies its mission. He said specific goals and benchmarks within each of the fi ve points will ensure accountability.

Smith said he believes the plan is the "most dynamic strategic plan" in higher education and was not created to be placed on a shelf but is "a living document."

Texas Tech University's personal financial planning program was ranked as one of the most influential programs in the profession by Financial Planning Magazine's January 2003 annual survey. New joint programs and minors within doctoral programs were registered this year. The Certified Financial Planners' Board of Examiners registered six degree programs from Tech for a three-year period, from September 2002 to September 2005 .

Texas Tech will become one of the first major universities in the nation to produce a yearbook with digital photography with the nexl edition of "La Ventana." In the past, the student section of "La Ventana" has been done by hand with individual photos labeled with a numbered sticker. A person would have to paste each picture, in order, on paper. The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center faculty has chosen to transfer $5 million from a quasi-endowment for professorships and research into a self-insurance fund. As the rate of return on investments in the self-insurance plan dropped with a cooling economy, the physicians decided to return the $5 million. The return of the quasi-endowment fund, which was set up as a temporary endowment during better economic times, would delay reinstating premium insurance payments for faculty until next budget year. The transfer will move money away from faculty research efforts and professorships, but the money earned from those accounts will remain. A quasiendowment is set up internally, with no outside donor determining its function; it supports a function through the use of

goals, including reaching an enrollment of 30,000 students on campus by 2005. Smith said about 29,000 students are expected on campus next fall.

"With the state growing, this puts Texas Tech in a very positive light," Smith said.

He said the strategic plan is in sync with the state's Closing the Gap initiative, which has a goal of placing 500,000 more Texans in college by 2015.

Through the plan, Tech officials hope to better serve an increased number of students, create more diverse campuses, help more commun ity college students obtain four-year college educations and provide more education opportunities in Texas.

S mith said the next step is to spread the message about Tech's vision throughout the state.

The plan is an extension of strategic plans at the Health Sciences Center and the uni versity and was developed by the board and Tech officials.

Regents first authorized the comprehensive road map in February 1997, said regent Nancy Jones.

She said she believes the plan articulates the abilities of the Tech system and wil l

benefit the people of Texas. The numbers in the plan wi ll "show everyone" about Tech's goals and achievements, she said.

In other action, the board of regents appointed Bob Black its new chairman and Brian Newby its vice chairman. Three members will be replaced during the upcoming legislative session.

The board did not take action regarding the presidency of the university of the Health Sciences Center on Friday, Smith said. He said members discussed revisiting the presidential job description and relationship of the university and system structure.

The regents voted to allow system officials to hire a fLrm to work with them about a future capital campaign and to evaluate the current structure and the strengths and weaknesses of the last effort- the successful fi veyear $500 million Horizon Campaign.

Smith said the next effort likely will start in the next two years, last five years and have a target in the hundreds of millions of dotlars.

The board also approved the return of $5 million to a HSC self-insurance fund from a quasi-endowment because of the current economic status and the increase in malpractice suits.

Texas Tech's admission requirements for incoming freshmen are becoming more stringent. Tech set its ACT score requirement for the top 25 percent of high school seniors at 25, and the SAT requirement is a score of 1140. Tech demands higher test scores than Texas A&M and North Texas University.

Linda Hoover, Ph.D., interim dean of Texas Tech University's College of Human Sciences, was named permanent dean of the college after an 18-month search.

She joined the College of Human Sciences faculty in 1990 and is a professor in the department of education, nutrition and restaurant/ hotel management. The college has more than 2,600 students and produces more than 500 graduates yearly.

Michael Ragain, M.D., is the new chairman of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the Texas Tech Medical Center.

Aside from his position as chairman, Ragain oversees the education programs for the health sciences centers at Amarillo, El Paso, Lubbock and Odessa.

Johannes Everse, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Biochemistry at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, was listed in the 2003 edition of"Who's Who in the World." He was previously listed in "Who's Who in the South and Southwest," ''Who's Who in Science and Engineering" and ''Who's Who in America."

People Glenda Robinson, manager for academic services for the Rawls College of Business, resigned after more than 17 years of service to the college. She began her career at the college in the area of marketing before acquiring her present job in the dean ' s office. She was honored with a reception on Jan. 22, in the college's rotunda.

College of Architecture Establishes First Endowed Professorship

By Jeff Whitley When F. Marie Hall decided to honor the architect who remodeled her Big Spring, Texas, home, she-once again-found a way to invest in Texas Tech.

In January, the philanthropist turned her generosity toward the university campus and established the first endowed professorship in the College of Architecture.

Andrew Vernooy, dean of the College of Architecture, announced that the professorship is named in honor of Deane Pierce of Lubbock, a 1950 Texas Tech architecture graduate.

'The Pierce Professorship will be used to bring in visiting faculty with distinguished credentials," Vernooy said.

"Students in the program will be exposed to ideas in the forefront of the profession.

The plan is to bring in professors for a brief but intensive stint so that the interaction with students is fresh and inventive, saturating them in the leading theories and practices in architecture."

Hall, sole benefactor and creator of the Synergistic Center at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, initially established a faculty chair in rural health at the HSC in 1997.

Vernooy says the college will be able to attract aspiring and energetic professionals to teach in the visiting critic studio for five to seven weeks. Pierce professors will work in the design studio setting that encourages critical thinking and candor regarding trends in the field.

Pierce, who is known for his aesthetic sensitivity and his ability to transform a client's vision into a reality, says the honor was overwhelmingly unexpected.

'This is a wonderful gift to me and the college, and it is one that will touch the lives of students for generations to come--young people who neither Marie nor I will ever know," Pierce said. ''Ms. Hall is a delightful client, and I am deeply touched by her kindness."

Pierce prefers residential work-both new and existing. However, he has served as architect and interiors architect for public and private structures including Texas Tech's MerketAlumni Center, Frazier Pavilion and Caprock Wmery.

Pierce's designs are widely recognized for their sophisticated appeal, an outgrowth of his lifelong love of the Beaux Arts architectural tradition. He is a principal with Pierce and Winn Architects and president of H. Deane Pierce Associates interior designers.

Vernooy described the professorship as a new window on the world, which will benefit generations of students and young architects to reach out to professionals who are making a difference in the culture of architecture.

"Dreams are an essential step to empowerment," Vernooy said. " And the students will select these visiting professors-they will decide who comes. We will have open debates and go through a communal process, but the students will be in the driver's seat."

Student debates will begin this year with the goal of inviting the first visiting profes-

sor in the spring of2004. The college plans to publish a brief on the professor's impact on students. Vernooy said the guest professors, over time, will serve as a thread in the fabric and future of the college.

"We are proud to honor Deane P ierce for his sensitive and intellectual architecture and exemplary professional service," Vernooy said. " We are also thankful for Marie Hall's generosity. Through her giving, she has empowered us to dream."

Following Texas Tech's Horizon Campaign, the number of e ndowed faculty positions increased across the system. The majority of Texas Tech's professorships are held in the colleges of business, engineering and agricultural sciences and natural resources. However, significantly enhancing student and faculty support, as well as building the system endowment, is the heartbeat of Texas Tech's strategic plan. Texas Tech leaders hope renewed focus on academic quality will prompt other colleges to reach out to alumni for private support for endowed fac ulty positions. • MAY / JUNE 2003 8

The Aviation Tradition at Texas Tech

A Texas Tech student and aviation enthusiast behind the

Texas Tech Univers ity was founded during the infancy of aviation, and the two grew to maturity simultaneously. In the 1920s, while educators busily built a campus and established a curriculum for the fledgling university, the skies overhead echoed the drone of an increasing number of propeller planes as barnstormers and early commercial pilots introduced aviation to West Texas. Tech officials quickly recognized the growing importance of aviation, and the university rarely lost an opportunity to embrace the new technology.

In 1927, Charles Lindbergh publicly demonstrated aviation's remarkable advances when he accomplished the first solo Trans-Atlantic llight. In that year, Texas Tech's Board of Regents began to discuss the need for an aeronautics curriculum. Interest in aviation remained high on campus.

In 1933, Amelia Earhart lectured in Lubbock at the in vitation of the university.

However, little actual progress was made toward developing an aviation curriculum unti ll939, when the mechanical engineering department offered a course in Vocational Flight Training. Soon afterward, the university became one of the first 13 in the nation to initiate the Civilian Pilot Training Program under the auspices of the Civil Aeronautics Administration. More than 5,000 students enrolled in the program. Renowned local aviator Clent Breedlove oversaw the training.

His enthusiasm for flying, as well as his experience as a barnstormer, military aviator under Gen. Billy Mitchell, Lubbock Muni-

cipal Airport manager and promoter, and his close friendship with Texas Tech, made him the ideal instructor.

The demand for pilots, navigators and bombardiers during World War II created a sense of urgency that cul minated in the establishment of the 309th College Training Detachment at Texas Tech in 1943. Tech President Cli fford Jones, who strongly espoused the univers ity 's role as a facility for military training, joined other Lubbock area dignitaries in helping Air Corps Gen. C. Brant locate a site for L ubbock Army Air Field. While construction rapidly progressed on the new military base, another facility, the South Plains Army Air Field, was created for the purpose of glider training.

Meanwhile, Texas Tech continued to provide muc h of the aviation manpower for the war effort. F iske Hanley was one of many trainees who saw combat action. In 1944, he left campus for basic training as an Air Force Aviation Cadet only 12 hours after graduating from the mechanical e ngineering department's aeronautical engineering program . i n early 1945, he was serving as a fl ight engineer on a seventh bombing raid over Japan when his B-29 was shot down.

After liberation he returned to Texas and pursued a long career designi ng Cold Ware ra military aircraft.

Aviation enthusiasm in West Texas continued unabated after the war and entered the realm of space llight in the 1960s. In November 1969, Alan Bean, from the panhandle town of Wheeler, stood on the moon as a member of the second lunar expedition, following the original moon landing by onJy four months . By the 1980s, interest in space exploration focused on the Space Shuttle program. Again, Red Raiders joined other West Texans in making a major impact.

Bernard Harris, M.D., graduated with a doctorate in medicine from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in 1982.

After completing a residency at the Mayo Clinic in 1985 and a National Research Council Fellowship at NASA's Ames Research Center in 1987, he joined Johnson Space Center as a clinical scientist and flight surgeon before becoming an astronaut in July 199 1. As mission specialist aboard the shuttle Columbia in Apri l-May 1993 and payload commander aboard the shuttle Discovery in Febru ary 1995, he logged more than 438 hours in space, became the frrst AfricanAmerican to walk in space and a member of the fust American crew to dock with the Russian Space Station, Mir. He served on the Texas Tech Board of Regents at the time.

Others have continued the tradition.

Upon receiving a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering and completi ng the Air Force ROTC program at Tech in 1980, Rick D. Husband pursued a distinguished career as an air force pilot, test pilot and instructor before reporting to Johnson Space Center for astronaut training in 1995.

Four years later, he piloted the shuttle Discovery on the first mission to dock with the International Space Station. He j oined Lubbock Coronado High School graduate William McCool and fi ve others on the shuttle Columbia's final mission, which met its tragic end Feb. l , 2003. As grievous as was the loss, it could not overshadow the outstanding contributions of the Columbia crew or the many Texas Techsans who have joi ned a multitude of others in furt hering the progress of aviation. • MA Y / JUN E 2003 11

WHEN THE SPACE SHUTTLE COLUMBIA DISASTER OCCURRED FEB. 1, A RED RAIDER WAS ON BOARD. COL. RICK D . HUSBAND, COMMANDER OF THE STS-107 COLUMBIA, WAS ON HIS SECOND FLIGHT INTO SPACE.

The Amarillo, Texas, native was continuing his lifelong dream. He had wanted to be an astronaut since he was four years old.

Husband graduated from Texas Tech in 1980 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. That year, he received the Outstanding Engineering Student Award from Texas Tech. Husband was active in Air Force ROTC while attending Texas Tech and was named a Distinguished Graduate of the program.

Texas Tech honored him as a Distinguished Engineer in 1997.

While a student, Husband sang in the Texas Tech University Choir. He continued to sing with his church choir after college.

He took a CD of the Texas Tech choir with him into space on STS-1 07.

In a 1999 interview with the Texas Techsan Magazine, Husband said, "I' ve always been very proud of Texas Tech. It's a great place to get a good start on whatever it is you want to do."

Husband went on to earn a master 's degree in mechanical engineering from California State University-Fresno.

After graduating from Texas Tech, Husband was commissioned in the Air Force, where he flew more than 40 different types of aircraft and logged more than 3,800 hours of flight time. He flew F-4s and then became an instructor pilot for that

plane. He attended the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School and then served as a test pilot for the F-4 and all five models of the F-15, as well as an F-15 aerial demonstration pilot. Husband was the program manager for the Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-229 increased performance engine. He also became an exchange test pilot with the Royal Air Force in 1992. He earned numerous military honors in the Air Force.

NASA selected Husband as an astronaut candidate in 1994. After he completed his training, he became the Astronaut Office Representative for Advanced Projects at Johnson Space Center, working on upgrades for the space shuttle, crew

Each step in his education was focused on that one thing.

In 1978, our paths formally met as Air Force ROTC cadets here at Texas Tech. I was a political science major wanting to fly airplanes, and Rick was a mechanical engineer on his way to space. He did not brag about wanting to be an astronaut; he just wanted to continue on the path to NASA. Texas Tech was and still is a great springboard to life. On May 10, 1980, 19 senior cadets graduated, and we were commissioned as second lieutenants.

Eight of us were headed for Undergraduate Pilot Training; Reese Air Force Base was just down the street. We thought it was a no-brainer for us to go there. Two, Gary Cox and Scott Pattillo, were sent to Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, and the other six, Rick, Brian Clark, Skip Johnson, Jim Gregory, Chris Johnston and myself were banished to Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Okla.

Once at Vance, we were assigned to Class 82-01, the first graduating class of the 1982 fiscal year. The class of about 60 was split into two sections; Brian, Jim and Skip were put in section 2, and Rick, Chris and I were in section 1. Rick, Chris and I got a three-bedroom apartment together, and for the next year, we were inseparable. We ate together, we studied together, we carpooled together. lfone ofus had a late flight, we all stayed late.

We took turns cooking; every third day it was your turn to cook, and the other two would clean up. We split the rent; we split the grocery bill, everything together. Ifone of us had a bad day, the other two would offer advice to get us back on the right track.

In our second phase of training, Rick was

assigned to an instructor with fighter pilot experience.

This was important to Rick because he needed high performance jet time to be considered for NASA. We all seemed to do well in this phase of training. When assignment night came around, Chris was assigned as an instructor in the T-37 but was able to return to Texas in Wichita Falls at Sheppard Air Force Base. I continued my banishment to Enid, as a T-38 instructor, and Rick got his high performance jet, the F-4 Phantom, assigned to Homestead Air Force Base, Florida.

We went our separate ways after pilot training. I got married in October of 1981, and Rick married Evelyn in February of 1982, between Fighter lead in school and his Homestead assignment.

Rick was a person that I could stand shoulder to shoulder with, and I looked up to him, and he never looked down on me, or anyone.

I have been lucky to keep up with him over the years through a few letters and phone calls and Christmas cards from halfway around the world. Rick became an instructor in the F-4 and was named Instructor of the Year. He went on to Test Pilot School, and after his tour at Edwards Air Force Base, he did an exchange tour in England doing flight-testing . One of the best conversations that I had with Rick was when he called me to let me know that he had been selected for Lieutenant Colonel below the Zone (ahead of time) in the

return vehicle and studies to return to the moon and to Mars.

In 1999, Husband served as pilot on the STS-96 Discovery mission. He took with him into space three Texas Tech flags and other items from the College of Engineering.

Upon his return, Husband visited campus and presented one of the flags to Donald R. Haragan, Ph.D., who was president of the university at the time. The other items were presented to the College of Engineering.

Husband leaves behind his wife, Evelyn Neely Husband, who earned her bachelor's degree in telecommunications from Texas Tech in 1980. They have two children, Laura and Matthew.

On Feb. 4, Texas Tech held a memorial service to honor Husband and fellow crew member William C. "Willie" McCool, who graduated from Lubbock Coronado High School. •

morning, and that afternoon NASA called to tell him that he had been selected to become a pilot astronaut. Rick had made it.

Rick was not alone in his quest to become an astronaut. He had a strong faith in Jesus. He applied to NASA four times. He was not stopped or discouraged by these letdowns. He and Evelyn prayed about his future; he had all the squares filled. If he did not make it to NASA, that would be OK, because he had plans beyond NASA. Of all the books, regulations and manuals that Rick had read in all of his studies from Amarillo to Houston, one was the most important. It is called "Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth." Most of us know it by its shorter name-the Bible. Rick knew this book well.

He lived it better than any man I know.

Please do not feel sorry for Rick, for he is being well cared for. I ask your prayers for Evelyn, Laura and Matthew, his brother Keith and for his mother Jane. • Kirk Crawford '8o

ADMINISTRATION BUILDING & THE CARILLON The most widely recognized building on campus was modeled after La Universidad de Alcala de Hernales in Spain. This building houses the president's and chancellor's offices as well as the board of regents' office. The most notable portions of the building are the twin bell towers. The west tower houses The Carillon, and the east houses the Victory Bells. The Carillon was a gift from Ruth Baird Larabee. It contains 36 bells that were cast in The Netherlands. The Carillon's songs, which sound Like a cross between bells and an organ, are occasionally heard pealing across campus. The bells were cast, tuned, framed and installed in 1966 for approximately $26,000. The Victory Bells were a gift from the class of 1936; one is large, one small. They rang the first time at the class's graduation and ring for 30 minutes after men's and women 's athletic victories and for special occasions. There is nothing quite as fulfill ing as hearing the bells toll from the east tower after a Texas Tech victory-hence the line in our fight song: "And the Victory Bells will ring out!"

GOIH' BAND The Goin' Band is a fixture as old as Texas Tech. Few universities can boast, like Tech can, that they bad marching bands from the very beginning. According to 'The First Thirty Years," a book penned by Ruth Hom Andrews, daughter of President Paul W. Hom, the first Tech band, "a scraggly aggregation of 20 members," made its premiere in October 1925 at the first football game-Tech vs. McMurry. The score was 0-0. The band was under the direction of W.R. Waghorne, then head of the Department of Music .

Since the first years, the band only became stronger and more well known. Today there are approximately 400 members in the Goin' Band from Raiderland. It can hardly be considered "scraggly," either.

Tech was the first school in the nation to allow females in its marching band, a move that kept the band afloat during the dry years of World War II. The Goin' Band is the pride of Texas Tech students and alumni. It's not unusual to hear a sports fan say, "We've never lost a halftime show."

In 1999 the band was awarded the highest honor for a collegiate marching program, the Sudler Trophy. The traveling trophy is awarded for demonstrating ''particular excellence over a period of years." Past winners of the trophy include the programs at the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Ohio State University, UCLA and Purdue.

FIGHT SONG The "Fight Song" was written by Carroll McMath and updates the Matadors, Tech's original name for the athletic teams, to the Red Raiders. The song is sung at many of Tech's sporting events.

CAROL OF LIGHTS I CHRISTMAS AT TECH The Carol of Lights, dubbed so in 1961, has illuminated the Lubbock sky since 1959. In the 1950s, it was a tradition for students to gather at Memorial Circle to sing Christmas carols and drink hot chocolate. Lights were strung; initially there were only 5,000 lights covering campus buildings. But, like all things in Texas, it had to be bigger.

Today more than 25,000 red, white and orange lights make up the spectacular display, which is usually held the first Friday in December. The event is sponsored by the Residence Halls Association. More than 20,000 people visit Tech's campus to witness the event. Spectators say they get goosebumps not from just the chill in the air, but also from watching the Masked Rider and torch-carrying Saddle Tramps parade around a darkened Memorial Circle, listening to the Texas Tech choir performing Christmas carols and the booming voice of William Hartwell singing "0 Holy Night." Finally, with much anticipation, the flip of a switch turns the night aglow. The lights remain on from 6 p.m. until midnight every night until Jan. 1.

The lights are on more than six miles of wire and adorn 13 campus buildings. A single switch activates the relays to turn on all of the lights at once.

The Madrigal Dinner is another favorite Christrnastime treat at Texas Tech, touted by the College of Visual and Performing Arts as a dinner that "is reminiscent of the Medieval era with singing, feasting, and frivolity." The event is held in mid-December.

WILL ROGERS AND SOAPSUDS This statue has made an indelible mark on the hearts of every Red Raider; it is one of our finest icons. Undoubtedly many have never known why the statue is there, or they've forgotten.

Will Rogers, a humorist in the 1920s and '30s, donated $200 for the Tech band to play at the football game against TCU on Oct. 20, 1926. He wanted people in Fort Worth to hear a "real band."

During this trip, Rogers was encouraged by his long-time friend Amon G. Carter to put up $1,500 to buy the band new uniforms.

Carter matched the contribution. In 1948, the Amon G. Carter Foundation presented to Tech a statue of Rogers and his horse, Soapsuds, titled "Riding Into the Sunset." Executed by the late Electra Waggoner Biggs, who was only 18 years old at the time, the statue is one of only four like it in the United States. The statue is physically erected on what was known as "Soapsuds Pavilion east Memorial Circle" and offset 23 degrees north from westsome say in order to face the rear of the horse toward Texas A&M, a favorite Tech rival.

"Riding Into the Sunset" is wrapped in red crepe paper before each Tech football game and is occasionally wrapped in black to commemorate somber occasions, such as the passing of the statue's creator, Biggs, or after the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.

BLARNEY STONE

Allegedly a piece of the actual Blarney stone from the Bl~ey C.astle in Dublin Ireland, rests on the Texas Tech campus. The artifact ts located ~hind the salle port of the Electrical Engineering Building.

Purportedly, a group of petroleum engineers found the stone March 7, 1939 while on a field trip. Exactly how it was determined to be a piece of the historic Irish castle is unknown-the story goes that the piece of stone was identical to a piece of the original Blarney Stone which disappeared from Blarney Castle in 1659. To mark the day, the engineers dedicated the monument amid speech making and music by the Goin' Band. Dosh McCreary, president of the Engineering Society, announced that in the future, upon graduation, engineers should kiss the Blarney Stone. He further added that only seniors were allowed to kiss the stone while underclassmen were expected to pay it the greatest of respect.

Legend has it, if you travel to the Blarney Castle in Dublin and kiss the Blarney stone, you will be endowed eternally with the gift of eloquence, or the gift of gab. Supposedly the same goes for Texas Tech's little piece of Blarney.

MEMORIAL CIRCLE Located near the main entrance to campus, the Tech War Veterans Association dedicated this area in 1948.

The monument in the center reads: "Memorial Circle: dedicated in 1948 by Texas Tech War Veterans Association to all whose service has brought honor to college and country." It is located in front of the Administration Building and contains a set of flagpoles in its center, which are also used in memorial services.

In 2002 The Pfluger Fountain was added to Memorial Circle. A dedication was held in April of 2002 to honor the Pfluger family of San Angelo, Texas, whose generous gift allowed for the construction of the water feature. !20 TEXAS TECH SAN

THE SEAL The red granite depiction of the seal of the university welcomes visitors to campus at the main entrance at the intersection of Broadway and University Avenues. The ground in front of the seal is worn away by several inches because of the popularity of students having their photos taken in front.

Designed by the campus master planner, William Ward Watkin, in 1924, the Tech Seal's symbols are the lamp, which represents "school," the key for "home," the book for "church" and the star for "state." Cotton bolls represent the area's strong cotton industry, and the eagle is suggestive of our country. The seal first appeared on Tech diplomas in 1948, but it wasn't officially approved as "The Seal of Texas Tech University" until1953. On April 27, 1972, the seal was placed at the Broadway and University entrance to the campus in what became known as the Amon G. Carter Plaza. It is made of red granite and stands 12 feet high.

It has been referred to by students through the years as "the Oreo."

FREE SPEECH AREA (Not shown) One of the greatest privileges of being an American extends to the college campus. Since the Student Union building was constructed in the 1950s, there has always been an area dedicated outside the building to free speech. No doubt in some eras the free speech area was used more than others, such as during times of war. Still today students and student groups use the area to spread their messages to passersby.

Recently, the outdoor Gazebo was designated as the free speech area. The Gazebo is located immediately east of the Southwest Collection building close to the corner of 15th Street and Boston Avenue. Utilizing the area requires no reservations-anyone wishing to use it can; it's first come, first served.

Currently, students are voting on designation of a second free speech area on campus.

STUDENT MEDIA The University Daily, the campus paper, as well as the yearbook, "La Ventana," and the radio station, KTXT, are all a major part of campus life. Each organization depends heavily on student involvement. Students who work for these entities garner real-life experience that can't be offered in the classroom.

The UD is a student-run paper, which means it operates independently from Texas Tech administration. This autonomy allows The UD staff a great amount of latitude. The UD has long been a popular public forum used by students, faculty and staff to air opinions and grievances. First issued in 1926 as The Toreador, The University Daily is an official student publication designated by the Board of Regents to serve as a medium of mass communication for the campus community and to provide practical experience for students majoring in various aspects of mass communications or other disciplines.

The "La Ventana" was first issued in 1926 and is an official student publication designated by the Board of Regents to serve as a comprehensive written and photographic record of any given year in the history of Texas Tech University. ''La Ventana" means 'The Window" in Spanish.

KTXT, 88.1 on your FM dial, has been around for more than 40 years. Texas Tech owns this campus radio station, which is also student-run. KTXT offers the Lubbock area a mix of alternative and other music genres. The station also reports campus news and information. If you've been gone from Lubbock a long time and miss the good ole days, KTXT-FM can be heard online at www.ktxt.net.

HIGH RIDERS A booster club of sorts for women 's athletics, the High Riders have been at Tech since Nov. 2, 1976. This spirit organization is the female counterpart of the Saddle Tramps.

They take part in parades, various campus events and ring the Victory Bells after a women's athletics team wins.

GUNS UP A 1998 issue of the Texas Techsan documents the origins of our well-known "Guns Up" symbol. L. Glenn Dippel '61 wrote that he and his wife, Roxie '70, were living in Austin in 1970. The omnipresent "Hook 'em Horns" hand signal was wearing on the Dippels. After much experimentation, the Dippels came up with the hand sign for a gun after looking long and hard at Raider Red and his oversized pistols. In 1971 Dippel and two fellow Red Raiders, brothers Bill '68 and Roger '72 von Rosenberg, had decals made that displayed the phrase "Gun ' Em Down." Dippel contacted the Saddle Tramps and explained the decal. The Guns Up hand symbol was adopted and implemented by the Saddle Tramps and Texas Tech cheerleaders. The tradition is one of Tech's most recognized.

RED & BLACK Red and black are the trad itional colors of the matador. The wife of Ewing Young Freeland, an early Tech football coach, came up with the name Matadors because it reflected the Spanish architecture of campus.

The college colors of "scarlet" and black as well as the team name "Matadors" were adopted by students March 15, 1926. While the school colors remain, the name Matador has faded away.

RED RAIDERS Tech students were known in the early years as the Matadors until 1932, when Lubbock Avalanche-Journal sports writer Collier Paris, noting the team's red uniforms, wrote "The Red Raiders from Texas Tech, terror of the Southwest this year, swooped into the New Mexico University camp today." By 1936 the Matadors were history, and the Red Raiders ruled.

MATADOR SONG The writing of Texas Tech's alma mater was the result of a contest. The school newspaper, then called The Toreador, sponsored the contest and offered $25 to the winner. R.C. Marshall, who was the 1931 "La Ventana" editor, was deemed to have written the best song. With exception of Harry LeMaire's (the Goin ' Band's director from 1926-1934) 193 1 re-write of the music to The Matador Song, it has remained the same.

RAIDER RED The cartoonish Raider Red, oft compared to Looney Tunes' Yosemite Sam, has been a crowd favorite since his appearance in the early 1970s. Raider Red was created due to the Southwest Conference rule instated in 197 1 that prohibited teams from taking live ani mals to non-home games unless the host team had no objections. If the Masked Rider was not allowed at a game, Raider Red showed up in his stead. Jim Gaspard, a Saddle Tramp, created Raider Red from a dr!!wing by the late cartoonist Dirk West.

SADDLE TRAMPS AND THE MIDNIGHT RAIDERS Raider Red is known fo r fir ing up crowds, especially when he ftres his two "guns" after each Red Raider touchdown. Raider Red is always a Saddle Tramp, and his identity has always been kept secret from the students.

MASKED RIDER The tradition that brings so much pride and enthusiasm to being a Texas Tech fan had an intriguing beginning and an even more amazing history. The tradition began as a gag in the mid-1930s-George Tate '37 shocked football fans when he and a trusty palomino named Tony or Silver, depending on your source, led the football team onto the football field then just as quickly fled the scene. Tate, whose identity was kept a secret, borrowed a pair of cowboy boots from his roommate and sported a scarlet satin cape made by the Home Economics Department. He had been coaxed by pals to sneak a horse from the Tech barn and to make the first appearance as the mysterious Red Raider.

The Red Raider and his trusty steed appeared only sporadically until 1954, when Joe Kirk Fulton was asked by Tech's football coach DeWitt Weaver to travel to the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla. Tech was hoping for a spot in the Southwest Conference.

Because Tech was the only school lacking a mascot, it is believed that DeWitt thought creating a mascot might aid Tech's admission into the conference.

So it was in 1954 when the Masked Rider became an official Tech tradition. The program has had its ups and downs. The first female Masked Rider raised a monumental ruckus but turned out to be a boon to the program. Then there's the bad luck that has plagued the horses used for the tradition and the occasional smooshed referee and cheerleader. But through it all, the tradition remains intact. It is still the most thrilling part of a football game to see the Masked Rider astride a black steed tear across the emerald turf of the gridiron.

BAHGIR' BERTHA Recognized most easily by football fans, Bangin' Bertha is a large bell hauled on a trailer to all Tech home and away football games by the Saddle Tramps. The bell was designed by Tech employee and Saddle Tramp sponsor Joe Winegar and paid for by Santa Fe Railroad.

ARBOR DAY

••NEw•• TRADITIONS Events we hope will become long-term traditions.

This was a tradition that began in the 1930s and fell by the wayside until Debbie Montford, wife of Chancellor John T. Montford, revitalized the event in 1999. In 1938, the vast campus's lack of trees and shrubbery caused President Bradford Knapp to proclaim that one day each spring would be dedicated to beautifying the campus.

The first Arbor Day at Texas Tech University was March 2, 1938, where students, faculty, and university organizations planted 20,000 trees and shrubs around the campus. Classes were dismissed at noon on this particular day to enable people to participate in the plantings. A chuckwagon served as the refreshment stand, offering doughnuts and coffee. For about 10 years, the Arbor Day celebrations continued until the university was able to fund a maintenance program and landscape architect.

The tradition of students, faculty and campus organizations celebrating Arbor Day eventually faded.

The new/old event is held each April and was held this year on April 25. For the benefit of campus beautification, hopes are high that it will remain a tradition.

SIHGLE RIHG TRADITION Since 1999, The Official TIAA Class Ring has been the universal symbol of academic achievement at Texas Tech. The single ring is a tradition that was brought back from the 1950s that encompasses the DoubleT, Masked Rider, Administration Bell Tower and the Texas Tech seal. Cast inside each ring is "Strive For Honor," taken from "The Matador Song." Rings are presented by the university president at the Official Ring Ceremony in the Merket Alumni Center. The ring is available exclusively to graduates of Tech and enrolled students who have completed at least 60 credit hours and have achieved junior or senior standing. The program was initiated to establish one ring for Tech graduates. The Alumni Association's ring is the only "official" ring of Texas Tech University. Since the tradition was revitalized, more than 5,000 students and alumni have become a part of the tradition.

The camp is new, having just been started in 2001 by then-Texas Tech President David Schmidly. But, as the student body size at Tech continues to grow, Red Raider Camp will be a necessity for new students to feel a part of the university.

RAIDER ROSE An effort at a female version of Raider Red that flopped. The picture says it all.

FISH 'N SLIME 'N BEANIE HATS Freshmen were readily and openly harassed at Texas Tech until the 1960s. Freshman were called both "Slime" and "Fish" and were taunted and hazed if they wore their high school letters.

They were required to wear beanies until Thanksgiving, unless Tech won its Homecoming football game. Slime were required to sit together during football games, and the men had to participate in a "shoe rush" by placing their shoes on the 50-yard line and scrambling to recover them at the "go" signal.

This "Slime" cap belonged to the late J.S. (Jay) Craddock Jr. '39, of Robert Lee, Texas.

The cap was donated to the Texas Tech Alumni Association by his wife, Marian Craddock.

TORTILLA TOSSING

"No one understands me... "

This football game activity brings sheer joy to many frenzied students and misery to the Tech administration, not to mention the numerous "delay of game" penalties it has brought to the football team. Tortilla tossing began sometime in the early 1990s, most likely 1994, and has continued sporadically since. Current students call it a tradition, but those graduating before the mid-1990s call it poor sportsmanship and silly.

Although when this activity started is known, exactly why tortillas are tossed sky-high is a mystery.

DOUBLE T BERCH Located near the Preston Smith statue behind the Administration Building is a large cement Double T bench. The bench was the senior gift from the class of 1931. Back in the early days of Texas Tech, only seniors were allowed to perch upon the bench.

Today, that tradition is long forgotten, and anyone may relax on the Double T.

SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE CIRCLE This tradition didn't flop, per se, because in 1996, when Texas Tech joined with 11 other universities to create the Big 12 Conference, anything emblazoned with the words "Southwest Conference" became obsolete. The SWC Circle was the site of many pep rallies and spirit events since its construction in 1956---the year the conference was established. The circle wasn't perfect, anyway. It lacked a depiction of University of Houston's mascot because Houston was the last school added to the SWC, and it included the Arkansas Razorbacks, who eventually pulled out of the SWC.

TASTED THE PREMIER WHITE LEMONY CHEESECAKE AND IT WAS, PREDICTABLY, OUT OF THIS WORLD . THE PEKING PORK PASTA SALAD WASN'T FAR BEHIND.

Actually, I should be ashamed to say that I tasted every recipe-all 11-but, alas, I'm not. I am, however, delighted to report each was superb.

You see, I was lucky enough to catch Margaret McCutcheon '86, a smiling, spunky redhead who laughs easily and often, in the Texas Tech Human Sciences food laboratory as she practiced for her spring cooking schools.

Margaret is a home economist for Taste of Home Cooking Schools, an affiliate of Taste ofHome magazine. She travels to 40 cities in five states-Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansaspresenting recipes and tips and promoting national sponsors such as Hormel, Nestle, Campbells and Crisco. She presents half the shows in the spring and half in the fall.

Saying she merely presents the shows is an understatement, though. It's her responsibility to "sell" the cooking school in cities in her tenitory, which is a year-round job by itself. She's in charge of finding a media source, usually a newspaper, television or

radio station, to sponsor the program. Dates are scheduled months in advance.

As for the actual event, she oversees setup of the venue: making sure ovens, microwaves and refrigerators arrive on time and rounding up volunteers for prep work like chopping, grating and peeling in order to organize each recipe for the show.

She builds a mirror system and sets up audiovisual equipment: a camera, a DVD system, a series of rear projection television screens and a foot pedal system to control it all.

The AN equipment is utilized to ensure every audience member can see the cooking process-those close to the stage can watch McCutcheon or the overhead mirror; those further back can see the projection screens.

She uses the foot pedal to pop back and forth between live shots of her preparing dishes to "glamour shots" of the finished comestibles.

When the two-hour program kicks off, it's a whirlwind of cooking, presenting trivia about the national sponsors and entertaining the audience with cooking tips, all the while using the foot pedal to switch the video feed back and forth between live action and the glamour shots.

Every show has a million details, both miniature and colossal. Then it's on to the next town.

"Every location is different," McCutcheon says. "You don' t get in a lull because every day meets new challenges."

Like the time she arrived at a venue in Oklahoma and was greeted by an atrocious odor. A freezer housing beef had expired, so to speak. The inevitable occurred: rotting meat oozed goo out of the freezer and all over the floor. Thanks to the festering smelly mess, watery eyes abounded and preparation was going to be a nightmare. Not easily discouraged, the sponsor rounded up helpers from the local jail to clean the mess-inmates.

Evidently the odor affected the jailer's eyes as well, because in all the excitement a prisoner escaped. The show went on and was successful despite the less-than-perfect prep.

So, McCutcheon explains, the job's not always easy.

"I spend over half the year in a motel. I send my itinerary to all of my family. If anybody needs motel soaps, I've got those," she says, laughing. "You just have to really be organized, take care of your affairs when you're 32 TE X AS TECH SAN

through the house. I might come through the house on a Friday night and leave out on a Sunday or a Monday and be gone for two weeks."

She jokes that her cats Clementine and Snoopy, who are checked on frequently by close friends, are often curious about her comings and goings. They get a little miffed when McCutcheon's home in Lubbock and they're forced to share the bed. But, for the most part, the ever-grinning chef says she thoroughly enjoys her livelihood. In fact, her opinions of the territory she travels read like excerpts from Conde Nast Traveler magazine.

McCutcheon also appreciates the many friends she's made along the way as well as the freedom of the job.

"If you want to stop and see the Grand Canyon and you have a day in between, you stop and see it," she says. "And over the years I've developed a lot of friendships with the media I've worked with, so we may do stuff on the weekends if I have a layover weekend in a place."

When I jokingly asked McCutcheon how she stumbled into this job, she laughed and remarked, "I did stumble into it!"

When she was fresh out of college with her home economics education degree, McCutcheon accepted a position as a county extension agent in Lubbock County. After four years she decided to try her hand at teaching, first in San Angelo, then Garden City and finally in Lubbock at Roosevelt High School. However, budget cuts required the Roosevelt school district to cut a teacher from the home economics department.

"Of course, I was the last one hired," she says. "So I was the frrst to go."

While preparing her resume a friend urged her to apply for an open job with Taste of Home magazine's cooking schools. She applied, but the company was in the process of moving from Madison to Greendale, Wis., and McCutcheon didn't receive an immediate reply. She moved on, accepting a position in the Slaton, Texas, school district. Soon after she was contacted

by Taste of Home. She interviewed for the job and within 24 hours was offered

the position. It was still summer and school hadn't started, so she hadn't yet begun her job in Slaton.

Serendipity struck, though, because McCutcheon had scheduled two appointments to sign her contract in Slaton and both times the human resources representative missed the appointment.

After accepting the job with Taste of Home, McCutcheon jumped from the frying pan into the frre. After a short training period and within weeks of being hired, she was presenting her own cooking shows to audiences ranging in size from around 600 to 2,000; each show averages roughly 1,000 audience members. McCutcheon says audience size depends on venue size, but that generally every show sells out.

Thanks to her sparkling personality and ability to entertain, she is now a piping hot celebrity of sorts across five s tates. Avid audience members often request her autograph, which McCutcheon still finds amusing.

"People think we're (Taste of Home's home economists) like this really neat icon," she says. "We put our pants on just like they do, we're not celebrities. They come up and ask for your autograph... that blew me away that frrst time when people were lined up asking for my autograph. I was like, ' Who, me?'

"People will line up for two hours before a show outside (the venue). If it's a first-year show, they (the sponsors) are blown away by that. I've even seen them tailgate. You know, pull out their lawn chairs and their sandwiches and they're having a tailgate party while they're waiting."

cCUTCHEON grew up a small town girl. While today she performs in front of hundreds or thousands of people, the population in the tiny West Texas town of Fort Davis where she was raised was less than 1,000.

Like most small towns, a few leave, most

in Jeff Davis County, also taught her a lot about cooking. Her father's style of cooking was different from her mother 's, though. He grew up on a ranch and learned to cook chuckwagon style, whi ch McCutcheon says was outstanding, too.

In addition to her parents, McCutcheon credits two high school teachers, Robie Golden and Betty Prude, as two of her mentors. She, Golden and Prude remain in close contact today.

"She is very definitely the only student I ever had that I could honestly say, 'That girl will succeed,"' says Golden. "She is the perfect example of a dedicated professional in her job. Margaret is organized, meticulous, and exhibits fabulous communication

stay behind. She was one who left, following her star to Texas Tech. She exchanged her itty-bitty graduating class of 2 1 for 20,000-plus Texas Tech students. Tech was a world away from her picturesque hometown nestled in the mile-high Davis Mountain range-where, she says, "There's no place else you can go where you can feel like you can touch the stars like in Fort Davis, the Davis Mountains.

They' re just right there. I have always said, no matter where you go, those mountains in Fort Davis are always in your heart."

McCutcheon credits several people from her small town with giving her a love of cooking. Her mother, she says, was a huge part of why she chose to major in home economics.

Watching her mother perform all the tasks of keeping a house together interested young McCutcheon, and she adored learning to cook.

Her father, who for years was the sheriff

skills. Everything she tackles is done with gusto and success. I can definitely say that if you have not seen her on stage you are missing a treat. She uses Tech anecdotes in her talks-relating to people about small town living-and growing up in West Texas. Her manners and approach to her tasks rival that of any southern belle.

"Margaret is one of several students that I have remained close to over the years and I can honestly say that she is, without a doubt, a former student that Tech should be proud to call 'one of our own."'

Prude says McCutcheon is "one of her favorite subjects."

"As a student, Margaret was a teacher's dream," Prude says. "She was fun, always willing to go the extra mile, and was not afraid to express her opinion. She was a joy to coach and direct in the drama department.

She has been blessed with the gift of gab,

The popularity of the cooking schools isn't limited to the United S tates.

McCutcheon told me about a group of missionary women from deep in Mexico who read about her show in the Taste of Home magazine. They checked the schedule and traveled all the way to Brownsville, Texas, to catch it.

OOKING ISN'T the on ly spicy thing in McCutcheon's life. This go-getter cherishes the week-long white water rafting trips she takes every other su mmer.

She's been through He ll 's Canyon on the Snake River and the Main Salmon River in Idaho. C urrently s he's waiting on word from Oregon, where she's put in for a permit to raft the Rogue Ri ver. She takes the trips with friends and fami ly. It's the one time, she says with a hearty grin, that she doesn't have to cook.

"That's my little bit of getaway from it," she says.

Another way McCutcheon relaxes is her annual pilgrimage for sustenance for her soul. S he sets aside a week each year to attend the historical Bloys Camp Meeting (or Bloys Cowboy Camp Meeting) at Skillman's Grove, 16 miles southwest of Fort Davis. Bloys has been around since 1890 and is held five days each summer, usually starting the second Tuesday of August and running through Sunday. McCutcheon's family has been a part of the tradition since its inception. Her family homesteaded land in Jeff Davis county in the early 1880s.

By now it's obvious that McCutcheon gives every task her all. She's a hard worker and an outstanding cook. Trust me, I speak from experience.

Elementary School near Lubbock and then in the Lubbock Independent School District for a few more. She enjoyed teaching but was anxious to apply her speech correction background.

"In 1947, there was one speech therapist, Martha Bradshaw, in the school district, and then three months later, Mr. (Nat) Williams, our s uperintendent, assigned me," Smi th adds. "Josephine Ballenger was our supervisor. At ftrst, we couldn't service all the schools, so we selected the schools that were more in need than others. Soon, we had six or seven therapists working.

"We would go into the schools and screen the kids for speech problems. Some of the teachers had us screen their whole classes; others made referrals. It was strange how many children were referred as having a cleft palate when it was just an articulation problem."

One benefit of her job, Smith notes, is that she didn' t work at just one school. She moved around in the district and became acquainted with many people at different schools. She spent the most time at Hodges Elementary and Rush Elementary schools.

"I guess my favorite part of my job was getting to meet so many teachers," Smith adds. "The most fun I had was the last three years, when I was at Guadalupe Early Childhood Center in Lubbock. That was the most challenging, but I remember it as fun. It was all fun to me. It was never drudgery or work."

Another special perk that came out of her job in the schools was meeting a student with whom, 36 years later, she continues to work on his speech and language.

HE TEXAS TECH

speech department was established in 1928. The original faculty members were Annah Jo Pendleton, who taught speech correction, and Ruth Pirtle, department head, who taught speech and drama. The speech correction area in the department was started at a good time, as the discipline officially began in 1925, with the formation of what eventually became the American Speech-LanguageHearing Association.

Pirtle worked with the Kiwanis Club of Lubbock to establish the first free county speech clinic in Texas. The Lubbock Sanitarium allowed the clinic to be in a small room within the emergency room.

Every Thursday, people of all ages and from all walks of life would come to the clinic for therapy. The speech correction students worked in the clinic.

In addition, the department worked closely with the local cerebral palsy clinic.

Smith recalls that Esther Snell, who ran the clinic, brought in speakers to discuss speech and therapy hearing connected with cerebral palsy.

"Texas Tech realized early on that this was an important, growing field," notes Judith Keller, an instructor in the Texas Tech Department of Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences, who is a board-certified specialist in fluenc y. "I'm proud of Texas Tech because they jumped on the bandwagon early."

Smith has spoken to Keller's classes about changes in the field and in the speech classes at Texas Tech.

"When I talked to Judi's class, there were 40 juniors," Smith says. "They asked me, 'What's different about this class and yours?' I laughed and said, "Maybe there were three students in one of my classes.'

In addition, Keller says, the department has state-of-the art audiological equipment, a brain mapping institute, an alternative, augmentative communication lab, and a speech physiology lab with the latest in endoscopic and stroboscopic equipment.

"In the past the speech and hearing clinic was housed in a Quonset hut, the basement of the Foreign Language building on the Tech campus and a small building attached to the Maedgen Theatre with limited resources and equipment for students to use while learning procedures," Keller continues. "We have come a long way since the early days when Evelyn was in school!"

Most of the students who graduate with degrees in speech-language pathology go to work in school settings, much like what Smith did, Keller notes.

During her 31 years in the public school

Smith compares notes with cztrrent students.

"A big, big change is the wonderful setting the speech students have for their preparation now. We fi nally ended up with some little rooms with two-way mirrors for observation, but we had nothing like they have now-so much equipment."

Keller agrees.

"The scope of practice has changed dramatically over time," Keller says. "We are so fortunate to be located in the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock now. We're part of the School of Allied Health. There are about 170 students in our speech-language and hearing sciences program and we have a lovely, new clinic with a waiting room, a receptionist's office, a bookkeeper's office, a student workroom, a treatment resource room and about 11 specialized treatment rooms.

Each treatment room has its own observation area so that parents and students can watch the treatment process. Supervisors can also watch from their offices via a closed-circuit TV system and all the supervisor's offices are connected by e-mail over

system, Smith saw a great deal of change in the speech pathology field. When she ftrst started, the focus was on articulation, but it wasn't long before it expanded to include language, swallowing, aural habilitation and fluency.

Today, it is not unusual for a speech-language pathologist to work in the areas of language, literacy and written language in the schools, in addition to helping children with articulation, fluency and hearing problems. In the hospital, the pathologist may work with laryngectomees, burn victims, and individuals who have had a stroke or traumatic brain injury. Many speech-language pathologists in hospitals help in the NICU with the tiny prematurely-born infants who are at risk for hearing and speech.

Although the field has grown and the equipment has advanced, speech-language pathology still has at the heart of it people like Evelyn Smith-people who care and who want to make a difference in the lives of those who have difficulty communicating. •

A highly regarded weapons systems analyst who has advised both the White House and the U.S. Congress on national security issues, the 61year-old Douglass has seen for himself what can happen when terrorists decide to "challenge your defense capabilities."

Thirteen years ago, while he was serving as deputy commander of U.S. forces attached to NATO headquarters in Brussels, the gung-ho Air Force officer faced a life-or-death challenge from political terrorists intent on kidnapping him.

"It happened in 1990, just as the Gulf War was breaking out," says the feisty Douglass during a recent interview in his Washington office. "At that time, I was the No. 2 American flag officer for the U.S. military forces attached to NATO in Brussels. Part of my job was providing security for three ambassadors. So I was well aware of the rising tide of political violence in Europe, as the [Gulf] war was spinning up. At that time, we were experiencing about one political murder per month in Belgium, and the terrorist threat was very real."

Federal or Confederate artilleryman in Civil War '·battle re-enactments," Douglass chuckled nostalgically as he recalled a highspeed car chase that nearly cost him his life.

"One night I was headed home from NATO headquarters, and a Mercedes-Benz began foDowing us. Well, we started hitting the 'roundabouts' -these big traffic circles all around Brussels-and doing our best to shake the pursuers off. That didn' t work, so we got on the radio and called for hefrp.

"About the time we did that, two more cm pulled out--one in front of us, and one in back. My driver was a young Army corporal, a woman, and she knew exactly what to do-she drove straight through a sidewalk cafe, got around the roadblock, and put the pedal to the metal!"

With cafe tables flying and dishware shattering all around him, Douglass broke out his "officer's sidearm"-a sleek Beretta 9 mm pistol-and prepared to do battle with the speeding thugs.

"We were zooming along," he recalls, "and we had the guns out, and I was on the verge of opening fire on the car behind me. I was thinking that if I blew the windows in on 'em and wounded one or two, it wouJd even the odds a little bit-because there were eight of them and two of us. But then we got a lucky break: Along came a big Belgian anDOred car out of a clear blue sky, with whistles and bells blowing. And the terrorists thought it was coming to our rescue! They broke off the attack and sped away."

Was the brigadier general unnerved by this high-speed showdown with gun-waving terrorists?

"Not really," he says with a laugh. "You have to understand: This was only one of three kidnap attempts on me by anned assailants during my time in Brussels. On one occasion, they invaded my home and severely beat my driver-but luckily, I was out of town. And then there was also another car chase, at speeds of better than 100 miles per hour, along the 'Ring' [beltway] that surrounds the city.

"I didn't get too upset, because I'd understood from the beginning of my assignment that terrorist attacks were a possibility in Belgium. But it was quite an adventureone of these days I may write a thriller!"

Born and raised in Miami, F1a., the actionloving Douglass joined the Air Force as a fresh-out-of-college "ROTC' lieutenant, way back in 1963. After earning a master's degree in industrial engineering at Texas Tech, he spent two years in Southeast Asia.

"I was an Air Force captain when I arrived on campus at Lubbock," he recalls, "and I went straight from campus to 42 TEXAS TECHSAN

Southeast Asia, where I spent a lot of time doing 'spooky things' in a partly classified assignment "But I had some terrific professors during my time at Texas Tech, and the engineering they taught me had a huge impact on my later career as an analyst of weapons systems. It was a wonderful learning experience, for which I've remained very grateful over the years.,.

Within a few years of leaving Lubbock and serving in Southeast Asia, Douglass found himself "participating in the development of the Cruise missile program and later worki!ng w!th the Stealth Fighter-Bomber program. Both were at the exciting razor's edge of technology, and it was a thrilling experience on a fot of levels," he says.

By 1981, the fast-rising weapons systems expert would be serving as a special assistant to the undersecretary of defense.

Named in 1984 as director of the Defense Programs section of the National Security Council, Douglass would soon become a frequent adviser on defense matters to the White House . .. and would also later spend several years as an in-house expert for several key congressional committees charged with shaping defense-related research and investment programs.

After retiring from the Air Force in 1992, the politically savvy and immensely experienced Douglass was eagerly sought after by Washington's legion of defense industry lobbyists. Given his background and expertise, nobody "inside the Beltway" was surprised when the nation's premier aerospace lobbying association, the AlA, tapped him (in 1998) to be its seventh chief executive.

Led by such heavy hitters as The Boeing Company, Northrop Grumman Corp. and General Dynamics, the 83-year-old AlA, with a staff of 50 and an annual budget of nearly $8 million, sees its primary role as "an educator to legislators and the public on the importance of aerospace to the nation's security, economy and quality of life."

As the chief architect of the AlA's message, John Douglass spends his days telling the world about the importance of continued federal support for aerospace research, among many other assignments. These days, the energetic Douglass also spends a lot of time defending the U.S. space program in the wake of the Columbia disaster.

"At the AlA, we feel more strongly than ever that America's manned space program must continue. We must learn all we can from the tragedy, and do our best to prevent further accidents. But we should never give up our quest to remain at the frontier of space exploration."

Ask John Douglass to evaluate America's future, post-9/11, and the indefatigable lobbyist will tell you he's an "eternal optimist."

"America has faced uncertain times before, and we've always managed to pull through," he says with a quiet smile.

"We'll respond to this crisis as we have responded to the crises of the past, such as the Civil War and World War II. We got through those times and came back stronger than ever, and we'll prevail in the war against terrorism as well." •

The Leader of the Band Retires

Keith Bearden, professor of music and associate director of bands at Texas Tech, is laying down his baton at the end of the 2003 school year after 34 years of teaching music and leading bands. He has been at Texas Tech since 1980, helping to create memorable sounds and sights for Texas Tech sporting events and other activities.

In addition to directing the 450-member Goin' Band from Raiderland marching band, Bearden conducts the University Concert Band, the Court Jesters Basketball Band and teaches classes in conducting and music education. He is a member of the Texas Tech graduate faculty.

'The best part of directing band at Texas Tech is definitely the students," Bearden says. "I've enjoyed the association of the thousands of young people associated with the Tech Bands over the past 23 years. The next best part was the excitement and thrill of performing for thousands of people and hearing their response to the Goin' Band.

The pinnacle was for the band to be awarded the Sudler Trophy in 1999. And to top it all off was this past semester during which we flew the entire band to Ohio State for the Pigskin Classic, where we performed on the Ohio State field at half-time, beat A&M in College Station, beat UT in

Lubbock and flew the entire band to the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, Fla." Bearden has taken the Goin' Band to the Independence, All-American, Sun, Copper, Cotton, Alamo and Tangerine Bowls. His bands have performed for the Denver Broncos, Dallas Cowboys and the old Houston Oilers. He has traveled with the Court Jesters Basketball Band to illinois, North Carolina, Tennessee, Montana, Georgia, California, Idaho and Iowa.

In addition to supporting the school's athletic department, he bas taken performing groups to Ireland, Great Britain, Scotland, Germany and Austria. This past summer he took a band alumni/friend/student group to Switzerland and Italy. Plans are underway for a band alumni trip to Spain in the summer of2005.

A native of Hale Center, Texas, Bearden graduated from Texas Tech with a bachelor's degree in music in 1969 and a master's degree in education in 1975. He was a member of the United States Air Force Academy Band, where he played with the concert band, brass quintet and Falconaires Jazz Ensemble.

Prior to returning to Texas Tech as band director, Bearden directed bands at Lubbock Monterey High School for six years.

Bearden was named Outstanding Faculty Member at Texas Tech University by Mortar Board and Omicron Delta Kappa in 1994. He was awarded Kappa Kappa Psi's

highest national award-the Distinguished Service to Music Medal-in 200 1.

He serves as clinician, guest conductor and adjudicator throughout the United States. Bearden also serves on several national selection committees, the John Philip Sousa Foundation, the Sudler Legion of Honor and the Sudler Trophy. He serves as chair of the Sudler Shield Committee. He is a board member and past president of the Alpha Chapter (Texas) of Phi Beta Mu. He is also on the board of directors of the Tech Band Alumni Association, the Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Mu and the international board of Phi Beta Mu. Bearden is currently president-elect for Texas Music Adjudicators Association after having served that organization as concert band vice president for the past three years.

He is also a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, National Band Association, College Band Directors National Association, the Big 12 Band Directors Association, and Pi Kappa Lambda.

His wife, June, is a middle school band director. Their two sons, Stephen and Daniel, both play the trumpet.

"My plans after retirement are to have more family time, visit the band programs of our alumni and improve the golf score," Bearden says. "I will always be a Texas Tech fan and supporter. What I'll miss the most are the awesome sound of the Goin' Band, the game days at Jones SBC Stadium and the interaction with students in all the different organizations." • MAY / JU N E 200 3 45

Knight Joins 800 Club

By Matt Muench The University Dally Maybe Texas Tech coach Bob Knight did think winning his SOOth game of his career was a big deal, after all. He did it Wednesday (Feb. 5) night at the United Spirit Arena, and after the game, he took the microphone and spoke to a packed house, sporting his ftrst smile ali night.

"I've had many milestones in the past," he told the crowd. "But I have never had a milestone in front of a crowd I appreciate so much."

After Knight's speech, his team huddled around him and jumped in the air as the crowd chanted "Bobby, Bobby" and "SOO, SOO." "I wouldn't trade this team for any team I have ever coached," Knight said.

The milestone victory was not too tough for the Raiders to achieve, winning by a score of75-49.

After falling behind 5-0 early, Tech scored 26 unanswered points to take a commanding lead with 11 minutes to play until halftime. During the run, Tech forced nine turnovers and scored mostly on fast breaks and 3-point shots, and Nebraska did not hit a bucket for 15 consecutive possessions.

"When we got down 5-0 and I'm saying to myself, 'Don't let this happen again,"' Knight said. "But we turned the game and played pretty well."

However, like the six games before, Tech ( 13-5, 3-4 Big 12) fell into a slump, and Nebraska (9- 12, 1-7) got back into the game by outscoring the Raiders 20-1 1 to close the half and trim the Tech lead to 37-25 at the break.

At halftime, Knight stormed off the court.

However, whatever was said in the locker room sparked the Raiders again, and the second half was deja vu for the Comhuskers.

The student body enjoys the victory.

Tech opened the half on a 15-2 run and held Nebraska to zero fteld goals in seven minutes during the Comhuskers' flfSt I0 possessions of the second frame.

From that point, Tech cruised to victory.

Knight said he did not think getting the SOOth win was something that was putting more pressure on the Raiders this season.

'1 think they were playing to make sure I wasn' t upset as I was at halftime," Knight said.

"They figured one ass-chewing was enough."

Tech guard Andre Emmett, who led Tech with 24 points, said the win was special, and getting the SOOth does not mean Tech can relax. ''Relaxing will put us in a bad situation," he said. "I'm looking forward to SOl, S02, S04."

Tech forward Kasib Powell, who scored 16 points, agreed.

"It was really important to get it," he said.

"It hasn't been a distraction for us, but it is

something we have seen for awhile. Eight hundred wins; that's a lot of wins."

Tech guard Nathan Doudney started his first game of the season for the Raiders and proved why Knight let him be one of the first five Raiders on the floor. Doudney found his shooting touch that has been lost all season and scored, thanks to three 3-pointers.

"I was really pleased with the way he played tonight," Knight said. "He shot well in practice this week, and he hit some today.

Obviously, be was a big help to us."

Knight became the fourth men's basketball coach in Division-! history to reach SOO wins.

Dean Smith, who coached North Carolina, is the record holder with S79 wins under his belt.

So what's next? 900? How long will he coach?

'1'm going to coach tomorrow and see what happens," he said. '1 would like to coach (at Texas Tech) until we are really good." •

A Mighty Sharp Milestone: Lady Raiders Net Coach's SOOth Win

President Ronald Reagan was in the White House, "Ghandi" received best picture honors at the Academy Awards, "Eye of the Tiger" was one of the year's most popular tunes and Plenette Pierson was a 1-year-old.

Meanwhile, in the flatlands of Lubbock, a relatively unknown smalltown girl from Tulia was planting the seed for what would become one the most successful women's basketball programs in the country.

More than two decades later, the Texas Tech women's basketball program and head coach Marsha Sharp continue to blossom.

Sharp on Wednesday (Feb. 19), with a 59-48 triumph over Oklahoma, became the 22nd women's basketball coach in NCAA Division I history and just the second in Texas to win 500 games.

She has a career record of 500-156 and her winning percentage of .762 ranks in the top 10 among all-time Division I coaches.

"It hasn't been as big a factor for me as just winning games and trying to get us in a situation where we can win a conference championship," Sharp said.

"But at the same time, I don't want to overlook the fact that there have been a lot of people involved in this. This program is a lot bigger than just one person," she said.

The proof came Wednesday as most of the 12,707 fans in attendance at the United Spirit Arena chanted Sharp's name as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

Soon after the game, Tech athletic director Gerald Myers honored Sharp with a backlit DoubleT, while the crowd respond-

"She is responsible for the success of this program for a long period of time," Myers said. "She is just one of few coaches across the country who have won 500 games all at one university."

Sharp earned her bachelor's degree from Wayland Baptist in 1974 and served as a graduate assistant coach for the Flying Queens under legendary coach Dean Weese. She went on to garner her master's degree from West Texas State University in 1976 and began her coaching career at Lockney High School, where she posted a 126-63 record and three district championships in six seasons.

Sharp was hired as an assistant coach at Tech in 1981 under Donna Wick and took over the reins for the 1982-83 campaign.

She started her Lady Raider career with a three-game winning streak, which included a 78-64 win over Abilene Christian University in her debut on Nov. 19, 1982.

The rest is hi~tory.

"The fact that the administration at Texas Tech believed that women's basketball was something special was real important to our success," Sharp said.

"Our fans have been so great. I've coached a lot of special kids, and my coaching staff is great. ''There are a lot of people that this goes to. For me, this is a program milestone," she said.

Tech quickly solidified itself as an upand-coming program when it defeated powerhouse Texas (63-61) in the semifi-

nals of the 1991 Southwest Conference tournament. A few years later, the Lady Raiders cemented their legacy, winning the 1993 NCAA national championship behind player of the year Sheryl Swoopes.

They accumulated a record of 268-56 during the 1990s for an .827 winning percentage, which ranked in the top five of the nation.

Tech never fell off that perch, posting 14 straight 20-win seasons and advancing to the NCAA Sweet 16 in four consecutive seasons.

"I am very honored to play for her and be a part of this win," said Tech junior guard Natalie Ritchie. "She's done so many things for women's basketball and for so many West Texas girls.

"Her teams are a big reason why a lot of us played basketball," Ritchie said.

"Coach Sharp is awesome." •

NancyTodd Named Tech Volleyball Coach Nancy Todd has been promoted from interim head coach to head coach of the Red Raider Volleyball program. She replaces Jeff Nelson whom she served under as both an associate head coach and assistant head coach over the past eight seasons.

Before being named associate head coach at the start of the 2002 season, Todd had been an assistant coach at Tech since 1995. Prior to being named assistant coach at Tech in 1995, she was an outstanding player at Arizona State University. The 1993 ASU Team Captain was named to the Pac-1 0 All-Freshman Team in 1991 and helped lead the Sun Devils team to three post-season berths during her tenure. In addition to collegiate volleyball, Todd also has played 2-on-2 beach volleyball and has coached at the

club and international levels. Todd becomes the fifth coach of the Red Raiders in the program's 27-year history.

Lady Raiders Make 2003 A cademic All-Big 12Team Four Lady Raiders are among the 53 student athletes named to the 2003 Women's Basketball Academic All-Big 12 Team by the Big 12 Conference. Jolee Ayers, a junior exercise and sport science major; Casey Jackson, a junior general business major; and Jamie Nagle, a senior human development and family studies/anthropology major, were named to the first team. Natalie Ritchie, a junior communication studies major, was named to the second team. First team members are those student athletes who have maintained a 3.20 or better grade point average, while second team members have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify, student athletes must maintain a 3.00 grade point average or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled

contests. Nominated by each institution's director of student athlete support services and the media relations offices, the women's basketball academic all-league squad consists of 46 first team members combined with seven student .athletes on the second team.

Sharp Receives Carol Eckman Award The Women's Basketball Coaches Association has honored Marsha Sharp with the Carol Eckman Award, which she received April4 in Atlanta, Ga. The award is presented annually to an active WBCA coach who exemplifies Eckman's "spirit, integrity and character through sportsmanship, commitment to the student athlete, honesty, ethical behavior, courage and dedication to purpose." The award is named in honor of the late Carol Eckman, former West Chester State College coach, who is considered the "Mother of the Women's Collegiate Basketball Championship." Sharp is current president of the organization. •

Texas Tech Alumni Association Welcomes New Field Rep The Texas Tech Alumni Association is pleased to announce that Ryan Smith has been hired as South Texas Field Representative. He began his duties Feb. 10 and will be based in Houston for several months before relocating to Austin.

A native of Houston, Texas, Smith graduated from Texas Tech in 200 I with a BBA in marketing and then received an MBA in marketing in 2002. He had a 3.6 grade point average and was on the Dean's List four times and the President's List once. He was named runner-up to the Marketing Department's Outstanding Senior Award.

He was nominated for the National Collegiate Dean's List and was elected to Golden Key, Order of Omega, Omicron Delta Kappa and Cardinal Key as a result of his academic performance. He served as president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and was also a member of The Marketing Association.

As our South Texas Field Rep, Smith serves alumni chapters located in Temple, Austin, New Braunfels, San Antonio, the Hill Country area, the Rio Grande Valley, Corpus Christi and the Gulf Coast, Houston, Bryan/College Station, Beaumont and southern Louisiana. His charge is to keep these local chapters functioning properly and to identify new areas in South Texas for chapter development.

Alumni Association 75th Anni versary Campaign Wins Awards The Lubbock Advertising Federation, at its annual ADDY Awards Banquet, awarded a Gold Medal and two Silver Medals to the Texas Tech Alumni Association's 75th Anniversary campaign. Randy Christian & Partners, a Lubbock-based advertising, marketing and public relations firm, designed the campaign materials.

The Gold Medal went to the association 's new membership brochure featuring the 75th anniversary logo and new color scheme. One Silver Medal was awarded for the association's new logo and another Silver Medal was awarded for full-page print ads promoting membership in the association.

One trip is to Russia while the other is an excursion in the Rhine region. We are also co-sponsoring with the Chancellor's Council a fall trip (4-days/3 nights) to New York City.

October finds our travelers in Normandy, and then in November we will visit Prague.

Looking ahead to 2004, we have an Alaskan Cruise planned with all of the other Big Xll Conference alumni associations.

For you golf fans, in July 2004 we will sponsor a wonderful "British Open

By Sea" excursion. This trip includes nine days/eight nights/five rounds of golf. This amazing trip will be aboard the 122-passenger Clipper Adventure and includes tickets to the final two rounds of the British Open Tournament at Royal Troon.

Pat Cunningham ofAmarillo, center, had a very special 80th birthday. Cunningham was born Sept. 10, 1923, the same day that Texas Governor Pat Neffsigned the charter establishing Texas Tech. To date, there are seven Texas Tech degreeholders in the Cunningham family, including children andgrandchildren.

Texas Tech Day in Austin is held every other year, in conjunction with the Texas legislature being in session. This event is an opportunity for campus representatives to visit with various legislators and to tell the Tech "story." Angelina G. Kveton Provine (BS Home Economics Education) Capitan, N.M., received the 2002 Pioneer Award from the New Mexico Association for Family and Community Education, in conjunction with the New Mexico Commission on the Status of Women. She was honored at the FCE's annual meeting Nov. 8.

The 2003 Texas Tech University Meat

Judging Team retired the Southwestern Contest Trophy permanently after their wins in 2003, 2002 and 2001. The team placed ftrst overall at the event held Feb. 1 in Dallas, Texas. Lauren Grimes was named High Individual Overall at the competition. In addition, the team was named 2003 National Western Champions at the competition held Jan. 29 in Greeley, Colo. Deidrea Harris was named High Individual Overall at the event, and Grimes carne in second in the individual rankings.

The third annual Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing Scholarship Stampede was held Jan. 29 at the Mcinturff Conference Center. Approximately $30,000 in scholarships were given away. During the event, nursing students had the opportunity to meet and thank scholarship donors. The stampede included a drawing for 15 scholarships based on faculty nominations as well as a random drawing for 39 $500 scholarships. Donors also were presented with gold letter openers as a token of appreciation.

Col. Husband was obviously proud of his degree from Texas Tech. He was named a Distinguished Engineer in 1997 and carried a Texas Tech flag into space during the 10-day mission of the Discovery Space Shuttle in 1999. He presented that flag to then-President Don Haragan when he returned from the mission. Cynthia Villanueva, a second-year law student from Cibolo, near San Antonio, is working in Rep. Jim Solis' office. Angie Von Page1er, who graduated in December with a triple major in political science, Spanish and Latin American and Iberian Studies, is working in Rep. Dora Olivo's office. The program provides an opportunity for Texas Hispanic undergraduate and graduate students to gain legislative experience during the 78th Legislative Session. Students serve as full-time policy interns and fellows in the offices of members of the Texas House of Representatives. The experience is supplemented by weekly leadership seminars featuring guests including National Council of La Raza President Raul Yzaguirre, Maria Echaveste, former White House deputy chief of staff and Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Tom Phillips.

Texas Tech seniors Monte Brown and Felix Martinez Jr. won the Best Student Presentation Award for their oral presentation at the Texas Chapter of the American Fisheries Society annual meeting held in January. Their project examined the willingChoir Director Dr. John Dickson from space, indicating he was playing the CD while exercising.

Texas Tech University hosted the 2003 National Collegiate 4-H Conference with Oklahoma State University and West Texas A&M University in Fort Worth Feb. 20-23.

The theme of the conference was "Downtown in Cowtown: Collegiate 4-H the Cowboy Way" and included workshops, business meetings, tours of local museums and attractions, a concert at Billy Bob's Texas nightclub, a community service project, a dance and an awards banquet featuring Baxter Black, a cowboy poet. To enhance and serve the community, those attending the conference worked with the Outriders Program, which is dedicated to preserving the historical Fort Worth Stockyards. The Collegiate 4-H members helped with jobs such as rebuilding fences, painting or fixing brickwork. One of their jobs was restoring the last remaining scale house for cattle, a historical building that is more than 100 years old.

The Texas Chapter of the American Fisheries Society recognized Texas Tech University students with scholarships at a meeting held in January in Galveston, Texas.
