As 1979 enters its fourth and final quarter, I feel it is high time to discuss a subject of vital importance to the Ex-Students Association. It concerns philanthropy and pre-planning for the purpose of providing permanent support for the Association's worthy programs.

The Texas Tech Ex-Students .Association Endowment Trust is based on "planned giving. " Endowment simply means funds permanently invested to earn more. The interest earned from the permanent investment may be used to support such programs as scholarships , research, student aid, faculty development and the general promotion of Texas Tech University.

The Endowment Trust was established so individuals, groups or corporations can make gifts that will last through time . It provides the donor an opportunity to pick a particular area in which his or her gift will work continuously to benefit that purpose. Or, if so wished, the donor may choose to let the Association trustees determine an area where the need is greatest.

Gifts to the Endowment Trust may be any of several types: *cash *appreciated securities, either given now or at a time you determine *paid-up insurance policy or one on which you agree to pay the premiums *gifts or pledges of a specified amount of cotton, grain , land or any form of real property *oil leases , overrides, oil royalties or other forms of minerals *bequest through a Will.

Contributors to the Endowment Trust may want to consult with their accountant, attorney or other financial advisor before making a commitment. For credit on 1979 income tax, gifts must be received by the Ex -Students Association by Dec. 31, 1979.

I hope you will keep in mind this opportunity you have to make "a gift that keeps on giving" to your Ex-Students Association.

FROM that controversial first 0-0 tie game played in 1925 by a group of young men called by their college · president "The Rag Tail Bunch," Texas Tech football has come a long way, baby.

But along that cleat-trodden path to pain and glory have come many not-soon forgotten names and even more noteworthy achievements.

With Homecoming 1979 dubbed "All American for 55 Years," it seemed timely and appropriate to turn the pages of time back a few decades and recall those other days and plays that helped make Red Raider history what it is today.

By Marsha Gustafson *The team was christened by the newspaper headlines as the "Matadors" on Sept. 8, 1925. Story has it that Tech's first head coach and athletic director Young "Big Un" Freeland came up with the name, but fact has it that the name was originated by his wife! *Black and red were agreed upon as the official colors, but it was to be scarlet, not red or maroon.

Freeland insisted that the football team's color had to be "as near as possible to matching a bloodstain." The black was incidental. *The first football practices were called "hazardous to one's health, " because of the goat grass, thistles, eat's claws and other sharp weeds that could puncture the "hide" of the toughest player. *The team dressing room was in a vacant garage on ·the campus at the end of Broadway. The house which . had originally stood with it had been moved. After changing into practice clothes, the team had to jog behind the car of Coaches Freeland and Grady Higginbotham for four or five blocks to a briar patch on the other side of 19th Street where they worked out. *The Rag Tail Bunch, as President Holden called them, was captained that first season by Windy Nicklaus, a 5'4, 190-pound fullback who had played varsity football at Bucknell University as a freshman . *In the Matadors' sixth game of the year, they ran up a score of 120-0 over the Wayland Jackrabbits, a record score that still stands today.

Return with us now *In the first game of the first season, controversy had already begun.

The Matadors had earned 222 yards on the ground to the McMurry Indians' 96, but Tech could not seem to score. With seconds left on the clock, the Matadors tried a 20-yard field goal. Elson Archibald made a perfect drop kick that sailed through the uprights.

With time gone, the Matadors· thought they had w~n the game, 3-0. But a referee ruled otherwise. He sato the ball had not been snapped before time ran out. So the game ended in a 0-0 tie.

It is interesting to note, even all these years later, that the referee who signaled time had run out had tried to land the head coaching job at Tech, ~hich had been awarded to Freeland. Many felt his call was purely sour grapes. *The second game of the season against the Austin ·College Kangaroos was not too noteworthy except for the fact that the opponents' coach, Pete Cawthon, was later to show up on the other side of the field for Texas Tech in 1930. *A fatal injury hit the Matadors all too soon. George Crow, a freshman from Haskell, sustained a broken neck in scrimmage prior to the third game. During the middle of the week, he slipped into a coma and died. *The first touchdown for the Matadors came by halfback Gene Alford in a 1925 game against a small New Mexico school called Montezuma-the score was 30-0.

*Tech's most unusual play came in the 1926 season

by Elson Archibald-rules were quite different in those days than they are now, by the way.

In the fourth quarter, McMurry punted, and one of the coverage men downed the ball on the Tech 42 yard line. To everyone's surprise, Archibald walked to the huddle and picked up -the ball. ·Since it had never been blown dead, he broke into·a run and l€dt the bewildered Indian team and many startled Matadors standing around the spot where the ball had been. Fifty-eight yards later, the referee signaled a touchdown. Archibald also kicked the extra point, making the final score 7-0. . ~Pete Cawthon · joined the Matadors and turned them into Red Raiders. While. at it, he put TexasTech on the national map_as both a college and a football team. He coached the team and served as athletic director from 1930-40.

Known everywhere for his "suthun drawl" and _wit, stories ran rampant. One in particular stemmed from a defeat in 1937 by Detroit University: On the flight back, and based on Cawthon's well known admiration for everything that hinted of Knute Rockne, Pete allegedly grumbled to his players, "I dresses youah like Notre Dame. I feeds youah like Notre Dame, and youah plays like Canyon Normal."

As the plane neared the Fort Worth-Dallas area and with his head in his hands; he muttered to no one in particular, "I wish this plane would fall and take us ~I with it." To which one of the players answered, "Well,: he's always tried to live like Rockne. Now he wants to, die like him." *In 1938, Dec. 22, to be ·exact, there was a news· paper story about one of .Tech's star athletes, Elmer Tarbox.

Tarbox was first attracted to football as a freshman when he bent to the encouragement of freshman coach Berl Huffman. He was then "encouraged" to sign up for the team by Cawthon.

Stories go that Cawthon saw Tarbox on a basketball practice court. He said Tarbox had "Percheron legs with calves that accompanied his size 17112" collar." But Tarbox had never played football.

Cawthon told him, "You and those legs are going to play some football-and for me." Thus, the career of Elmer "The Great" Tarbox had been launched. *In Homecoming 1937 in front of .12,000 fans, Tech playe9 Duquesne · University of Pennsylvania. The Raiders couldn't get closer than the 40-yard line that day, until Elmer Tarbox made the first score on a play called a "hideaway." On Duke's nine, ·he took a snap from center, faked the ball on a spin to two other play· ers while keeping the ball behind his own back. Walk· ing slowly to the line of scrimmage, he then broke o~t into a run, scoring standing up as the defense was sttll trying to tackle the other two players.

*The Raiders' first undefeated and untied season came in 1938, but a postseason Cotton Bowl game against St. Mary's ended the winning streak, as the team fell 20-13. *During the World War II years, when all experienced players were being issued orders to report to military service, the football team was manned by "green" boys just out of high school. Opponents were high schools, military base teams and schools that were able to get up enough men to form a team.

At the end of the 1943 season, Tech's whole team was composed of only 16- and 17-year olds. *Tech had its worst win in history during the 1946 season under Coach Dell Morgan. That's right, worst win. The Raiders left victorious 27-0 over the New Mexico Lobos.

Avalanche-Journal writer Choc. Hutcheson wrote: "Texas Tech Red Raiders won another football game yesterday, but they looked lousy, even in victory."

The game consisted of tackles scoring touchdowns, backs fumbling after crossing the goal for touchdowns, punts being blocked, players ejected from the .game for open brawling and the officials losing track of ·proceedings during all the general confusion. *Jones Stadium opened in 1947, and in the first game played in it against the Hardin-Simmons Cowboys, the stands were filled and a standing room only crowd watched from every open area. *The Rice game of 1948 was memorable because Rice had slaughtered Tech the year before in Houston.

All week, the Raiders had practiced a special end laterals to halfback play, hoping for a better score than the previous year.

The score reached 14-7 and the ball was on Tech's 10-yard line when Ernest Hawkins called the special play with 20 seconds to go in the game. J. L. Gulley never heard the play due to noise in the stadium .and ran the wrong pattern. Nobody knew it until Coach

Dell Morgan saw the game films, and according to Gulley, "It was a bad week or two for me after that!" *The 1951 Arizona game saw quarterback Junior Arterburn set a record for the most yardage gained in a single game, winning Homecoming for Tech 41-0. *1951 saw the Raiders as Border Conference champions and winning their first Sun Bowl victory in Tech's history, 25-14. The game was played against the College of the Pacific, one of the nation's major independent teams at that time. *During the 1953 Gator Bowl game which pitted Tech against Auburn (Auburn won 34-13, quarterbacked by Vince Dooley, after Tech finish~d a 10-1-0 season), the Masked Rider made his first appearance.

The idea was originated by Coach DeWitf Weaver so Texas Tech could have a symbol or mascot like other major colleges in the nation had. The first Masked Rider was Joe Kirk Fulton. *Dan Law's first game as a Red Raider in 1955 came against Texas. During the bus ride to Austin, Law found himself seated next to his coach, DeWitt Weaver.

The day was warm and the trip long, and Law soon nodded off. With chin resting comfortably on his chest, . the bubble gum he had been chewing somehow fell out of his mouth and landed on his thigh, which was also riding along next to Weaver's!

He said he couldn't think fast enough to come up with a clever excuse for the gum being smashed between their thighs, so he merely went back to sleep to face the music later.

Later came all too soon, as the bus ride ended. Waking up and pulling his leg away from his coach's, Law (a native Alabamian) said, ·"Well, looka hyere," as the stringy, sticky gum pulled out and joined their two pqnts legs like a rope bridge! To which Weaver replied, not too happily, "Looka hyere, hell! You ruined my pants."

Return with us now *When Tech was awarded entry into the Southwest Confe-rence on May 22, 1956, it was reportedly the wildest time in Lubbock since the end of World War II, matched only by the gigantic celebration in 1923 when it was announced that Texas Tech would be located in Lubbock. It was the culmination of many years' work and finally achieved by Coach DeWitt Weaver. *Tech played to a not-so-memorable 13-13 tie in their 1956 Homecoming game against Oklahoma A&M. But for Wick Alexander, it was very memorable. He went in for the kickoff, had a knee injured and was out for the rest of the season. *Ken Talkington's career was a rags-to-riches story beginning at Tyler High School where he played in the shadow of quarterback All-Stater Charlie Milstadt. Milstadt was highly recruited; Ken was not even contacted. Milstadt ended up at Texas A&M. J. L. Gulley talked Ken into coming along on a trip to Lubbock "to help with the driving." Instead, the young man ate 12 eggs for breakfast and slept the whole trip! But he did get interested in Tech and joined the freshman team as eighth string quarterback walkon in 1956.

The next year, he played in one play. The sun wasn't shining too brightly on Talkington's football career, but he was a very good student, majoring in pre-med, as some of the other quarterbacks were graduating or flunking out.

During his junior year, Tech played Baylor in a televised game, winning 28-0. Ken made an 80-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, which seemed to turn his whole self-image around. That spring (1959) in training, he was the only senior quarterback. He ended up being first string and captain of the team.

Then Tech played Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl during the regular season. A&M's captain was a guy named Charlie Milstadt! Ken had what J. L. Gulley called a "traumatic, dramatic game," and ended up intercepting one of Milstadt's passes to ·win the game 20-14. *In order to comply with Southwest Conference guidelines, Jones Stadium had to be expanded. In 1959, the east stands, which weighed 12,500,000 pounds, were moved 200 feet back on rails, an engineering feat noted nationwide. *E. J. Holub, Tech's first All-American, played here in the late 50s. He was the nation's number one collegiate center and linebacker and went on to play pro football.

During the fourth. day of practice, though, in 1958, Gene Bentley, a 240-pound guard for the Raiders, suffered a mild concussion and wrenched neck muscles when he collided with E. J., then a sophomore center.

Put in the hospital unconscious after absorbing Holub's charge, Bentley awoke saying, "I'm glad E. J. is on OUR side." Holub's #55 jersey was retired to the trophy room at Texas Tech.

*In 1965, the first Tech game ever was called after only 56 seconds had elapsed in the fourth quarter.

Played at Lubbock against Kansas University, a driving rain and tornado warnings caused Kansas coach Jack Mitchell to ask officials to call the ·g ame off, even though his team was losing 26-7.

With players and a few remaining fans drenched from the wind and pouring rain which at times blinded play on the field, Coach JT King was quoted as saying, "I would have preferred to keep playing because I wanted to see some of the second and third teamers get some game experience, but I'm not complaining."

The game entered record books as a Tech victory. *That was also the year an unplanned play upset the A&M Aggies in the last 1:38 of play. In what was probably the final play of the game, the Aggies had just scored to make it 16-13, and hopes of Tech coming back were bleak.

JT King called a sideline pass. Quarterback Tom Wilson was to pass to end Jerry Shipley. But in the huddle, Donny Anderson told Shipley, "After you catch the ball, and if you're open, look for me because I'll be there somewhere. Pitch it to me. I think I can go."

Shipley was wide open, caught Wilson's pass and then pitched to Anderson, who went the last 37 yards without a hand laid on him. The Aggies left the field stunned at their 20-16 upset.

*Donny Anderson was drafted by the Green Bay Packers at a fig~re reported to be over $700,000, the highest price ever paid at that time for a pro football player coming out of college. "The Golden Palomino" is likely to be remembered as the greatest Red Raider of them all, according to fans and coaches alike. *The replacement for JT King was immediately nicknamed by underground newspapers in the area, "Morality Fats." Jim Carlen, in other words, was so named because of his staunch rules: 1) Get to church every Sunday; 2) No smoking and drinking, and this is a 12-month rule; and 3) No class cuts-none at all.

Another Carlen rule was that curfew be enforced at 11 p.m. One player protested, saying it was unfair because the girls' dorms also closed at 11. Carlen replied, "Then you'll just have to get your sugar as you go to the door!" *History was repeated in 1973 when Dan Irons joined the Red Raiders. The All-American was the son of Ed Irons, a Tech football star from 1940-42 and a member of the Texas Tech Athletic Hall of Honor.

Dan now plays for the San Francisco 49ers pro football team. *The Homecoming 1976 kickoff had to be delayed for an hour and a half because of a blizzard which struck Lubbock that morning. With the assistance of snow removal equipment, the game got underway at 3 p.m. During halftime, it started snowing again, and by the end of the third quarter, the field was so covered that players couldn't see the yard markers. Temperatures dipped to 20 degrees, but Tech came out a 34-7 winner despite. *Tech's first Southwest Conference championship finally came in 1976 under "Kid Coach" Steve Sloan.

Sloan's team, in their second year under his command, compiled a 10-2 record for the year and tied as conference champions with Houston.

Many goals were set and achieved in Tech's football history, such as admittance to the Southwest Conference, undefeated seasons, bowl victories and a conference championship. But the Raiders are relatively young, and much can still be expected of them. Potential and enthusiasm run high. fJ

FOOTBALL FIRSTS The luxury of a carpeted field, armchair seating and top-ranked opponents may have dimmed memories of Texas Tech's humble beginnings as a football power. But the Red Raiders' 1979 season opener against No. 1-ranked Southern California before 53,000 fans hardly resembled Tech's initial game on Oct. 3, 1925, when the then-named Matadors battled the McMurry Indians to a scoreless tie on a dirt field at the South Plains Fair.

These pictures from the Southwest Collection's extensive photograph files recall some of the historic firsts during Tech's 54 years of football.

The first kickoff-Texas Tech us. McMurry, Oct. 3, 1925. The controversial game, which ended in a 0-0 tie, was played at the old fairgrounds and was the highlight of the Panhandle-South Plains Fair week. A large crowd that was estimated at anywhere from 4,500 to 10,000 crowded the stands and sidelines as the Matadors gained 222 yards on the ground.

elegance in, sloppiness out

A change of pace from other cool~weather seasons is the deemphasis on boots. He said suits, which are the strongest single item one can have in her wardrope this Fall, will be accessorized with very high heels; no boots.

"The move toward suits was so strong, we had to analyze the suit as it related to the sportswear pic· ture with great caution," Margaret said. "Some suits have shorter jackets with belts, some peplum jackets, some longer jackets. The shoulders are wider and jackets are shaped closer to the body.

is living up to its promise of crisp weather, football, the return to school and an expanded social calendar for exes of all ages. For each of these activities, the appropriate wardrobe is essential, according to Joe Riley '74 of Margaret's.

"The Fall season is truly a smorgasbord of fashion," he said. A merchandising major while at Tech, Riley worked part time at Margaret's as a student then was hired as a buyer. He was recently made vice president of the company.

Having visited New York in April with Margaret Talkington, owner of the exclusive Lubbock shop, Riley was able to give The Texas Techsan a professional's analysis of the fall fashion picture.

"The collections were wearable, colorful and varied in the scope of casual and dressy," he said. "We saw a definite return to elegance.

Clothes are closer to the bodysculptured on one hand, yet fluid and soft on the other."

He added that this season will see both men and women "very dressed- no more sloppy clothes."

For instance, the open-neck shirt, blouse and dress will be giving way to a buttoned up, more tailored look.

palette as in others years." Predominant shades will be wine, berry, fuchsia, purples, emerald, blues "with life," red, neutrals and gray.

Skirt interest comes from front or back slits, where the skirt is very slim, or a variety of side pleats, pleats all around or panels to give movement. Many have blouses to complete the elegant look."

In the area of cocktail and evening wear, Riley said the theatre suit is the center of attraction. Some have lots of beading and fabric interest, and all are very feminine.

"The newest and most exciting extension was the return of the ball gown," he said. "They were marve· lous as show pieces, with big skirts, bare tops, luxurious satins, taffetas and beaded chiffons." Margaret added that in this locale, and with the move toward smaller cars, she really couldn't see that many ladies would be wearing them.

"For the casual look, the highheeled mule is in, in, in" Margaret said.

Bags will tend to return to a larger size, whether it be a handle of shoulder bag. The clutch continues to be very strong. All will be in colors to go with the shoe.

If one wants a more contemporary or junior look, Margaret summed up the picture.

"Suits again, slim, soft and slightly shaped in flannels, tweeds, wool and gabardines. Pants have a clear line in neat corduroys, flannels, ~orsteds, gabardines and Jeans.

"Blouses will be beautiful with soft necklines, pleating, small collars, silks, cottons and flannels in vibrant colors. Jackets will be easy and relaxed in a classic tweed, corduroy or gabardine-fabrics to take you from carpooling to the game to the theatre."

A season of sweaters will be the Fall of 1979, according to Margaret.

In fact , almost any style goes-"tis the season to own sweaters," as she put it.

Dresses are for every hour of the day and night, with emphasis on being dressy. Cocktail clothes are the order of the season, with fabric interest surging from silk to knits to flannels to challis and soft velours.

"The dress continues to be a winner," she said.

"New temptations" will include flannel walking shorts with wool cable knee socks and weejuns and "pumps with skirts, pants and everything."

Marilu Grace, an instructor in clothing and textiles at Tech, recently returned from a 19-day trip to . Europe with 15 students who were learning about the European market and comparison shopping in the fashion industry.

She echoed Riley in trends this Fall, adding that "the day of the clothes horse is out. Women as well as men tend to be purchasing clothing with a look that will not go out of style in a year. People are getting away from 'trendy' clothes and going with mixable suits, silk blouses and cotton shirts.

"Classic looks are the key word· this Fall." ~

There have been a number of changes made to ensure that this year's Texas Tech Homecoming Nov. 9 and 10 will be the biggest and best ever. But one of those changes may influence your plans, so we want you to know about it in advance. , · The annual Tech Exes Luncheon at the Coliseum Saturday, for the first time, will have a ticket charge and be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Due to a change in sponsorship this year, the traditionally "free lunch" will cost $3 per plate. The meal will consist of ham, roast, pork, cheeses, potato salad, cole slaw' tea, soft drinks and fried fruit pies.

A reception at the Coliseum will be open free to everyone, but to get in the lunch line, a $3 ticket must be purchased.

Under the theme "All-American for 55 Years," Homecoming activities will include dances, luncheons, reunions, football and all the other events that make the annual affair a high point of the Fall.

A detailed program of events will be available at the University Center and in the Ex-Students Building during the weekend. But for those who want to begin now making plans, the following schedule will serve to whet the appetite:

FRIDAY This will be the second year the Ex-Students Association has sponsored a Past Presidents' Breakfast, to be attended by any and all former Association presidents.

To begin at 8 a.m., it is slated for the Lubbock Room of the University Center.

Following the breakfast at 9 a.m., will be the Executive·. Board and Loyalty Fund Trustees' meeting in the UC Blue Room.

At 12:15, the Association Council Luncheon will be held in the Coronado Room, during which Top Techsan awards will be presented. These recognize nonteaching, untenured, full-time personnel of the University who have been selected for their loyalty and outstanding service to the students, faculty, staff and academic community.

Those members of the faculty and staff who have served Texas Tech for at least 10 years and who have retired during the past 12 months will also be recognized.

At 2 p.m., the Association Council meeting will get underway in the Lubbock Room. During this time, new officers of the Association will be elected. The council is the governing body of the Association and is made up of district representatives, past Association presidents, all chapter presidents and members of the executive board.

For members of the Century Club, at 6:30 the annual Century Club dinner and program will begin in the University Center Ballroom, preceded by a recep· tion at 5:45 in the UC Courtyard.

The 19th annual dinner meeting will feature as entertainment The Folkel Minority, a country/western/folk quartet based in Dallas. Reminiscent of the Sons of the Pioneers and barbershop groups, the four are most famous for their humorous hit song last winter, '.'Freeze A Yankee." Tickets for the dinner ate $7.50 each.

Membership in the Century Club is comprised of those who have made a gift of $100 or more to the Texas Tech Loyalty Fund during the past year.

An all-exes dance will conclude the evening at the KoKo Palace. Starting at 9 p.m., music will be provided

by Nightlife, a. group that plays everything from Big Band Era to disco and country/western. Tickets for the dance are $10 per couple, $5 single. This event is BYOB.

SATURDAY The "Big Day" will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. with an all-exes coffee featuring former Homecoming queens in the UC Courtyard. Simultaneously, all across campus, departmental open houses, fraternity and sorority coffees, tours and gatherings will be going on.

The Homecoming parade, led by Parade Marshal Donny Anderson, All-American from Dallas, will start at 9 a.m.

From 9:30-10:30 a.m., .an all-exes coffee honoring the Class of 1954 will be held in the Ex-Students Building.

Beginning at 11 a.m. and ending around 1:30 p.m., a Tech exes luncheon will be offered in the Municipal Coliseum. This year, for the first time in several years, it will be necessary to charge for the luncheon.

In the past, the luncheon has been sponsored by Furr's Inc., Gold Bond Stamps and Furr's Cafeterias.

Due to a change in sponsorship this year, it will be necessary to charge $3 per plate.

Come early to the stadium to watch the Pre-Game show at 1:45 p.m. Then get ready as Tech takes on TCU in the Homecoming match.

ITH bright Autumn days mellowing out in the mid-70s at Texas Tech, it is perfect weather for visiting the University. If it has been a while since you've been here, or if you're new to Tech, you will be pleasantly surprised at what you'll see.

Set aside a day or at least a portion of one, mark this section of your magazine and come to Tech-where the modern has meshed with the rich, Spanish-influenced past to create one of the most beautiful and spacious campuses in the nation. And begin your tour with us at the Ex-Students Association.

Other features of the Administration Building are the architectural sculpture over the main doorway, Spanish archways and the Double T bench in the back courtyard.

Although most of the time, the Tech statue of Will Rogers on his horse Soapsuds (7) doesn't look quite like this, before each home football game this fall, you can see the handiwork of the Saddle Tramps as they drape everything on campus, including Will and the horse, in red and black crepe paper.

Located on the Amon G. Carter Plaza just northeast of the Administration Building, the statue was donated to Tech by the Carter Foundation.

Looking north from the Administration Building is Memorial Circle (8), dedicated in 1948 by the Tech War Veterans Association to all Texas Tech graduates "whose service in World War II brought honor to the University and country." A flagpole stands in the center circle surrounded by beautifully maintained flower beds and shrubs.

Just northeast of the Circle is Holden Hall (9) . The rotunda inside the front entrance is a painted mural depicting scenes from the development of the West Texas area and commemorating some of its most noted citizens. .

Proceeding down the engineering key, take note of the Industrial-Textile Engineering Building (10). Another of Tech's original structures, it faces the Administration Building, and together, they nearly formed the

Home of former presidents of Texas Tech University, the Ex-Students Association Building ( 1) is also one of the original structures on campus, dating back to the 1920s.

Under a canopy of huge shade trees, the house is nearly secluded visually from the rest of the University by spacious front and back yards, trees and flowering bushes.

Across the back yard a bit is the recently redecorated and expanded University Center (2), formerly the Student Union Building.

It is one of many on campus that must really be seen from the inside to be appreciated.

The UC features a large. courtyard area decorated in bright blue and green wall-size macrame wall hangings and planters which Jine the courtyard and halls (3). Open staircases and glass further carry out the spacious effect.

12 north and south boundaries of campus facilities during Tech's early years. This, as the other early buildings, has the Spanish arches · prominent in the campus architecture.

The Electrical Engineering Building (11) is situated on the west side of the key and holds a double attraction. Besides the ornate sculpture (12) that adorns the building, there is a piece of the original Blarney Stone (13) on permanent display in the front colonnade.

Uncovered by a group of engineers near Tech on March 7, 1939, the stone was erected and dedicated on St. Patrick's Day later that month. Upon careful investigation, it was found to be identical to a piece of the original Blarney Stone whic h disappeared from the Blarney Castle near Dublin, Ireland, in 1658. Campus legend has it that by kissing the stone, one receives the gift of eloquent speech.

One of the newer classroom buildings at Tech is Mass Communications (14). The ultra modern facility was designed to fit in with the Spanish style architecture of the old campus. Likewise, the Social Science Building (15) was designed with the Spanish arches common at Tech.

Contrasting sharply with the Old Aggie Pavillion is the new stock judging pavillion (19) , located on the far west of campus grounds.

Just east of the Administration Building is another example of meshing the old and the new- the original Home Economics Building (20) was added on to enlarge food technology and nutrition facilities.

At the Broadway entrance to the <.. dmpus, the Texas Tech seal and fountain (21) attract many visitors and tourists. Designed by William Ward Watkins in 1924, the design was adopted officially as the University's seal in 1953.

The Southwest Conference Circle (22) was constructed after Tech was admitted into the Southwest Conference. Site of many pre-game rallies and bonfires, the circle. is divided into eight parts, each representing the symbol or mascot of the schools in the THE TEXAS TECHSAN/ OCTOBER

conference (except Houston, which was admitted after the circle was constructed).

Among Tech's newer buildings, all located on the west side of campus, are the Architecture (23), Business Administration (24) and Law Buildings (25) and the University Health Scie nces Center (26).

Tech buildings are not without their nicknames, of course. Two of the most heard are "the fort " (Law School Building) (25) and "the radiator in the s ky'' (Library) (27).

The Library contains probably the most

razzo floor, sunke n pool and fountain and tiled screens. Aside from aesthetics, the Library also contains several rare and unusual collections.

Recently completed, the Aquatic Center (28) offers University personnel and students a "best" in swimming facilities, and currently under construction is the Recreation Center (29), scheduled to open in February.

The Recreation Center is being called the best in the state, perhaps, and will include extensive use of glass and open space, a

31 multi-purpose gym accommodating five basketball courts and 12 badminton courts, as · well as several for handball, racquetball and squash.

Three multi-purpose rooms will allow for golf, archery, material arts, wrestling and dance . Weight rooms and a sauna are also being planned. A lounge and faculty/staff offices will be on the second level.

Another new building just opened recently is the Varsity Lounge (30), located just north of Jones Stadium. It houses the ticket office and athletic business offices with plans for sports information and other athletic offices to move in in the near future.

The Varsity Lounge also contains ~ trophy room, facilities for catering and an overview of Jones Stadium.

Adjacent to the Tech campus are the Museum and Planetarium (32). The

32 Museum, completed in 1970, is dominated by a 40-foot mural painted by Peter Rogers.

It contains over 160,000 square feet, eight galleries, research facilities, classrooms and space for work and storage.

The Ranching Heritage Center (32) is an integral part of the Museum, based on restoring and preserving the development of the ranching industry. The 12-acre outdoor exhibit of 22 historic structures dates from the 1830s to about 1910. The homes, barns,

windmills and other buildings were moved to the site from locations throughout the state .

Among the attractions at the Ranching Heritage Center is Cogdell's General Store (33). Items in the store are sold to visitors with proceeds going into the restoration of the Ranching Heritage Center. Among the many old-timey and unusual gift and food items sold is a Double T cookie cut ter, sold only at Cogdell's General Store.

There are numerous other sites of interest on the Tech campus for you to choose from to see, such as Engine 401, the Tech Bookstore, theatre , stadium, coliseum and auditorium.

But the important thing is that you come back to Tech-if not before, come for Homecoming. Take a self-guided tour or call the Saddle Tramps Office for their assistance.

Tech Today Construction projects increase Tech facilities · Students are not the only ones moving and readjusting as the fall semester of classes has begun. Construction projects estimated at more than $5 million are expanding Tech administrative and academic departments.

According to Walter Brown of the Office of New Construction, the changes represent an effort to provide more room for Tech's continuing growth in enrollment and for expansion in programs offered.

One of the largest projects under way is a $2 million laboratory addition connected to the Electrical Engineering Building.

Construction began in · May and is expected to be completed in the spring.

The chemical engineering department is also constructing a building to house hazardous and flammable chemicals. The three-room facility will be a separate building intended only for storage.

The construction project expected to affect the most students, however, is the $1.2 million remodeling and renovation of the administrative office in West Hall. Construction began in early summer and is scheduled to be completed by June 1980.

The entire interior of the building is being redesigned, and an elevator is being installed.

During the summer, two construction projects were completed. Sneed Hall was remodeled at a cost of $750,000. The dormitory was painted, lavatories and bathrooms were renovated and new hardware was installed. Three rooms were also equipped with facilities for the handicapped, including a ramp for wheelchair-bound students.

Earlier in the summer, the first phase of moving the mathematics department from the Foreign Language and Math Building was completed. Charles Kellogg, mathematics professor, said the main reason for the move was the need for more space.

Kellogg added that more space will be available for offices and other classrooms when the ROTC department moves into the Journalism Building basement later in the year. Clay Roberson, military science professor, said renovation of the basement will take about six months. At the present, ROTC and the Southwest Collection will remain in the new Mathematics Building.

Future plans for construction on the campus include several proposed building additions.

Brown said money for the construction projects across the Tech campus is provided by three sources: state appropriations, private donations and a central University fund.

The electrical engineering lab addition will cost an estimated $2 million.

Tech receives grant The Shell Companies Foundation has awarded $5,000 to Tech's International Center for Arid and Semi-Arid Land Studies (ICASALS), according to Dr. Clyde E. Kelsey, vice president for Development.

The Houston-based foundation has contributed $20,000 to ICASALS over the past four years.

The grant will be used for general support and for providing scholarships to students entering the interdisciplinary graduate curriculum in arid lands studies.

Ag Econ-Law degree among new programs A degree in agricultural economics and law is usually not earned at the same time, but Tech is offering this interdisciplinary program this fall.

Two other joint programs also have been added- Master of Public AdministrationJuris Doctor and Master of Business Administration-Juris Doctor.

These interdisciplinary programs are offered jointly with the Law School, the agricultural economics department , the School of Business Administration and the department of public administration to allow students to receive degrees in two disciplines in a shorter time.

Interaction in two areas allows students to associate information giving a broader background and good credentials for better job opportunities.

Another advantage of the joint programs is that a student may focus on the type of law of particular interest to him or her.

Enrollment reaches all-time high at Tech Final enrollment for fall 1979 climbed to 23,129, the highest enrollment figure at Tech since fall 1975, when figures totaled 22,580.

Fall 1978 enrollment was estimated at 21,067, according to Don Wickard, Tech registrar.

The largest class in the seven-year history of the Tech School of Medicine has enrolled for the 1979-1980 academic year, according to figures supplied by Russell Baskett, Med School associate dean.

A total of 224 students are enrolled as undergraduates. (A student must have a previous degree from an accredited univer· sity before he can be admitted to a medical undergraduate school.)

Of the 224 students, 84 are freshmen, 56 sophomores, 42 juniors and 42 se niors.

The resident doctors program had 158 doctors enrolled; Resident doctors have a medical degree, have passed the state medical examination and are licensed by the state to practice medicine.

The team then took their advertising campaign, based on Wella Balsam shampoo and conditioner as their product, to national competition in Washington, D.C. There,· ~ver 105 schools that entered the competition and 15 at the final elimination, the Tech team won second place.

In order for all 11 students and their faculty member, Ron Geskey, to travel to Washington for the nationals, funds had to be obtained to offset the expense of the trip.

The Ex-Students Association sponsored one team member and was pleased to, in this small way, have helped.

Rest in peace-Harvey J. Neptune, legendary invented -patron saint of Zeta Iota Tau Tech Band Drum Corps, has been laid to rest by members of the fraternity.

Regents form committee A subcommittee to evaluate and critique prospective Tech presidential candidates has been formed by the Tech Board of Regents Advisory Committee.

According to board member Don Workman, 90 percent of the meeting was organizational. He said most of the meeting was spent going over the procedures for the selection process.

"Our committee so far has received 27 applications," Workman said. "I believe there are 120 names submitted, and 27 of those have made it to this committee."

The subcommittee will be responsible for evaluating the applicant's qualifications and reporting their findings to the whole committee at another meeting, Workman said.

The regents have not set a deadline for hiring a new president. Applications will be accepted indefinitely, Workman pointed out He also added that once the Advisory Committee formulates its evaluations and critiques, the final decision will rest with the regents' selection committee, which will then add its own evaluations.

When lasers first came on the market, they were looked upon as solutions for which problems had not been invented. Within two decades, the situation is reversed. The demand for more powerful, more efficient lasers far outstrips supply.

Dr. Martin A. Gundersen of Tech's electrical engineering faculty describes laser development as in the horse and buggy stage.

"Lasers are just starting," he said. "We are at a medieval state." He sees the difference between where scientists and engineers are and where they want to be as similar to the difference between flying a kite and a Boeing 747.

Gundersen predicts that lasers will become one of mankind's finest problem solvers, once the immensely complicated technical difficulties are overcome.

They can be useful in making atomic energy cheaper and solving some of fission's waste problems, in his view, and lasers will be important in the chemical industry, both in providing new chemicals and controlling wastes.

Tech's observatory receives Conoco grant Texas Tech has received a $3,500 grant from Conoco Inc. for educational use by the University's seismological observatory.

This check was presented by a 1961 Tech graduate in mathematics and geophysics, Wesley Rice, coordinator of computer systems in the Exploration Research Division, Research and Development Department, Ponca City, Okla. , headquarters of Conoco.

It was accepted for Tech and the seismological observatory by Prof. D. H. Shurbet , observatory director.

Conoco has been supportive of Tech's observatory in times past, not only with grants but also by employing graduates and providing counsel in operations and help in securing equipment.

Interim vice president named by Graves Dan Williams has been appointed interim vice president for Finance and Administration at Texas Tech to succeed Kenneth ·w.

Thompson, who recently resigned to join Dr. Cecil Mackey, now president of Michigan State University.

Williams has been assistant vice president for Financial Services at Tech since April of · last year.

Prior to his current appointment, he served as director of the Office of Systems and Procedures, the Office of Statistics and Reports and the Office of Facilities Information. He joined the Tech staff in 1974 after having served eight years in areas of finance and planning at Texas A&M University.

Williams holds bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration, with emphasis in accounting and management, and a master's degree in education with emphasis in higher education. He also has had extensive professional course work in information systems, data processing and planning.

Ad team takes 2nd in nationwide meet It is always nice to support a winning effort, and the Ex-Students Association was able to have done just that.

Earlier this year, the advertising campaigns class at Tech entered the lOth American Advertising Federation Competition in San Antonio and won first place in the district over such schools as the University of Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma State.

Math scholarships honor former faculty members The Department of Mathematics at Texas Tech annually awards several scholarships to outstanding math· majors. While these are given to students of various classifications, they all are based, almost totally, ~n high academic achievement in math and are named ~n honor of four outstanding former faculty members tn the department.

According to Dr. Dalton Tarwater, professor and former chairman of mathematics, the scholarships were set up by faculty, family, friends or former students of the four men. Stipend amounts vary with the individual scholarship, and he added that "It is my hope these stipends are more in the future as contributions from the public and Texas Tech ex-students to the scholarship endowments increase."

The scholarships, n~mber of stipends awarded, amount and classification restrictions are outlined below: E. RICHARD HEINEMAN SCHOLARSHIPEstablished two-to-three years ago, major contributors have been students of Professor Heinem·an. Two stipends are awarded annually-one: paid' for out of an endowment and the other by two · of ~is 'former students, Billy Jean and Marvin Smith.; Restricted to $250 each for entering freshmen, the :s~·holars~ip~ are ~sed for recruiting top students.

Professor Heineman, a Lubbock resident, taught at Tech from 1928-73 and is described by Tarwater as "an outstanding teacher here for all those .years. He was well-liked and admired by numerous students and faculty alike~" EMMET HAZLEWOOD SCHOLARSHIP- Set up in 1968 by a group of faculty members, this scholarship has mainly been supported by family and faculty members. It awards two-to-three stipends annually in amounts up to $300 to ·upper classmen.

"You'll never meet a better person," according to Tarwater. "Professor Hazlewood is known across the country, and I still run into people who want to know how he is. "He was always known for his fair t~eatment of students and faculty."

any scholarship in his name be based on high academic attainment. He was a true beli_ever in rewarding students for good scholarship, Tarwater added. ,J

LONNIE AND MILDRED LANGSTON SCHOLARSHIP-This scholarship was created by the Langstons (he was on the math faculty until 1939 when he resigned and Professor Hazlewood was hired to take his place). A stipend of $500 is awarded annually tas a recruiting device to attract high-calibre undergraduate and graduate students.

"Professor Langston was one of the pioneer family members in mathematics, and he and his family's continuing support carry on his cotnmittment to top qual-· ity education," Tarwater said.

GORDON FULLER SCHOLARSHIP-Established by Dr. Tarwater and other faculty members in ·mathematics, this scholarship commemorates the service of Professor Fuller, who taught at Tech from 1950 until 1968. Now, at the age of 85, Fuller still writes text books, and they are still in use in the department, according to Tarwater.

Primary contributors to the scholarship fund have been colleagues and family. A stipend of $200 is awarded each year to an outstanding graduate student.

"Professor Fuller has had a long and distinguished ;.career as an educator," Tarwater said. "He taught at ·.. A4burn University from 1938 until he came to Tech in · l9SO. Any interested Texas Tech exes or friends of the faculty members or the University may make a contribution to the scholarship fund(s) through the Exstudent Association.

lesson in the game of life was delivered on the floor of Jones Stadium Sept. 8, and the Texas Tech football team was the fortunate recipient.

Our modern society is built around the race to succeed. Students strive for better grades, workers labor for better positions and higher pay, and athletes hope to finish first. It is a game of winning and losing, and sometimes the line is paper thin.

The Red Raiders opened their 1979 football season on a losing note. But as the players filed into the dressing room one by one, there were no tears. Heads were held high and each seemed to

sense a measure of accomplishment against a bigger and more depth-laden foe.

"We didn't win and we are disappointed about that," said Tech's second-year head coach Rex Dockery after dropping a 21-7 decision to Southern Cal. "But I think the players learned something about themselves and this team.

Sometimes when you give 100 percent when you give everything you possibly can, you come out of it with a good feeling inside."

The Raiders had another feeling inside all along- that they could play with the No. 1-ranked team in the country. Not only play with, but possibly outscore the Trojans . with the right combination of breaks.

Those breaks never came.

"We were in a position to give

them some problems in the last quarter," Dockery said. "It is a game of making your own breaks, and I guess we just didn't make ours. " Six plays after the Raiders had scored to narrow the deficit to 14-7 midway through the third quarter, outside linebacker Roger Jones stepped in front of a Paul McDonald pass and returned it to the USC 32. But just before Jones went down, an official tossed a flag, ruling roughing the passer and giving the ball back to the Trojans. The Raider bench protested to no avail.

Then early in the fourth quarter, the Raiders faced a .third-and-one situation on the usc·43. First, fullback James Hadnot was stopped for no gain over tackle and then THE TEXAS TECHSAN/ OCTOBER 23

The Trojans went on to post an insurance tally with 1:32 left to play, pushing the margin past its relative closeness.

The Raider defense drew special praise from the 52,991 people who packed into Jones Stadium. The specialty teams contained USC's explosive return threats and sophomore Maury Buford thun~ dered seven towering punts for a; 48.9 average.

The San Antonio Jefferson pro~ duct lived up to his "Senor Sack" nickname when he flashed astonishing speed in chasing down McDonald on a rollout play early in the second quarter. Line coach Bob Patterson is convinced of Rivera's potential. "Big Gabe can be as good as he wants to be."

With a tough eight-game Southwest Conference race looming ever larger, the Raiders appear capable of strongly challenging.

USC coach John Robinson believes the Raiders will be a factor.

"We had to play hard to beat one of the best teams in the country. It was a very, very hard game. Tech is a team that is rapidly becoming one of the best in this (the South· west) Conference," he said.

The Raiders' 1979 debut was not ~ a success on the scoreboard, and it <: Rl is unfortunate, too, that the giant electronic center does not flash the ~ results of such intangible elements as hustle and determination.

There's nothing more beautiful in volleyball than a powerful spike following a perfect set, unless it is countered with a well-timed double block thwarting the sphere back downward or a diving dig to keep the action going!!

Last year's Raiders had no problem with the former, as they displayed a quick and consistent attack with the ball on their side of the net. However, when the opposition was hitting, the . Raiders were almost powerless on defense. This year's story couldn't be more different, and Coach Janice Hudson isn't understating the improvement.

"Defense is our game now," Hudson said. "Last year we were all offense, but our new girls are very well-rounded players, and our whole strategy will be affected.

"Last year we relied on a few people to do everything, especially on offense. This year we don't have one dominating player, but we are better balanced. Our game will be more spread out."

Tech returns seven letter earners, including five starters from last year's 20-19-3 squad. 1978's Most Valuable Player, Foydell Nutt, a 5-7 junior from Kermit, will figure prominently in the Raiders' attack. A powerful outside hitter, i~utt is making the transition to setter, a position she played in high school.

"Foydell will be a double threat both as a hitter and a setter," Hudson said. "She'll be able to set from the front line and help us block on defense at the same time."

According to Hudson, Nutt's impressionable play and intelligence will make her the floor leader, an important function of the setter.

Freshman Dana Elrod, a 5-4 AllStater from Snyder, directed a fairly complex offense in high school and could come along quickly.

Other returning starters are Christy Cotton, Sonja Pittman, Valerie Earl and Carolyn Tubbs. Cotton, a 5-7 senior, and Pittman, a 5-8Y2 junior, bring five years of intercollegiate experience into this season.

Both are defensively strong in the backcourt and at the net, while Cotton also possesses a powerful spike.

In addition, the versatility of Pittman, Cotton and Valerie Earl will be tested at setting. With several potential setters in the line up at one time, the offense is sure to be wide open.

Freshman starters last year, Earl, 5-8Y2, and Tubbs, 5-8, are especially aggressive at the net. Earl's strength is at outside hitter. Tubbs, like Cotton will see a lot of action at the ' middle blocker/hitter position because of her quickness, according to Hudson. · "We have four good middle people who can help us. Besides Christy (Cotton) and Carolyn (Tubbs), Rhonda Farley and Christa White are strong t here. " Farley is a 6-0 sophomore · returner while Christa White is a 5lOfreshman from California.

Three other recruits whom Hudson likes to compare are Irene Solano and Rhonda Hubbard of San Antonio Churchill and Grace Gallardo of El Paso Burgess.

"All three have strong volleyball backgrounds coming from successful high school programs and USVBA teams. Their defensive skills are very impressive," Hudson said.

Solano, 5-8Y2, has been particularly impressive in the pre-season workouts and is a possible starter, acccording to Hudson. Her strong hitting this fall has been a pleasant . surpnse.

Hubbard, 5-8, is a "gutsy player,-" willing to try for everything on defense. With her hustle and backcourt skills, Hudson may use her as a "defensive specialist."

Gallardo, too, is strong defensively and will help the offense as a weakside hitter.

"We're better than last year even at this point," Hudson said. "We · have more bench strength and will rotate more people in and out of the game."

With a schedule dominated by tournaments, the added depth will be welcome relief. Unfortunately the in-state competition won't provide the same.

UT Arlington, defending state champions five of the last six- years, and ninth nationally last year, may be a little weaker with the loss of their top player, but it is still the team to beat, according to Hudson.

Houston will be much stronger, predicts Hudson, and Texas A&M, state runners-up and regional champions last year, will field another top team. Texas and Lamar are the other state powers the Raiders must contend with.

Before the Texas showdown, the Raiders will play a strong national schedule that includes tournament stops at San Diego State, Brigham Young, Oklahoma and Oral Roberts University.

Dream comes true for Coke Hopping

Track coach named Former World Class runner Jarvis Scott has been named the new Women's Track and Field/Cross Country coach at Texas Tech.

Scott was the head cross country coach and track and field assistant at her alma mater, California State University, Los Angeles, for three years. She replaces Beta Little who resigned this summer.

Scott, 32, has a long list of athletic accomplishments, highlighted by a sixth place finish in the 400-meter dash at the 1968 Olympics. In that year, she was the first American to qualify for the 400- and 800-meter runs in the Olympics.

Scott was an AAU Champion in 1969 and 1971 and was the AlA W National Champion in the 440-yard dash in 1975, running for Cal State Los Angeles.

She has competed internationally for the U.S.A. team from 1967 to 1973 against the British Commonwealth, Europe, Russia, Germany and in both the 1971 Pam American Games and 1973 University Games in Moscow.

Calling it quits Tech tight end Mark Harrelson has quit the Raider football team, coach Rex Dockery has announced.

Harrelson, who started in allll games for the Raiders in 1978, made the decision to quit for personal reasons, Dockery said.

The San Antonio junior saw varsity action as a freshman on the Raider specialty teams and moved into a starting role last season when James Hadnot was switched from tight end to running back.

Harrelson, a 6-1, 223-pounder, caught five passes last season for 89 yards and one touchdown. He caught Tech's first scoring pass in 1978's 27-9win over Baylor.

Randy Page, Ron Reeves' backup at quarterback last spring along with Richy Ethridge, has been declared ineligible to play football in 1979.

By Ruthanne Brockway A·J Staff Coke Hopping proudly tied on a black mask and tossed a scarlet cape across his shoulders recently at Texas Tech.

He hopes the ritual will become a family tradition.

The Tech junior has been chosen the 1979-80 Red Raider, to ride the school's black quarter horse mascot at home football games, parades and other events.

"I've dreamed of this since I was five or six years old," Hopping said.

Hopping's horsemanship ability earned him the position over six other applicants.

His duties will include keeping Happy VI in shape by exercising the horse three or four times a week.

Hoppi~g, who is majoring in agricultural education, was taught to ride horses by his father, Clifford.

"In exchange for breaking a horse, we would receive yearling colts," he said. "My first horse came to me this way. The colts that I received would be broken and trained by me and my brothers.

He grew up in Springlake and moved to Lubbock in 1971. During those years he watched the Tech Red Raider at football games. The masked rider leads the football team onto the field and then circles the stadium at a full gallop after each touchdown.

Hopping knew he wanted to hold the honored position someday, but applicants must have completed at least 64 semester hours, so this was the first year he was eligible to apply.

His years in waiting to try out were spent as a member of the Texas Youth Rodeo Association, Sheriff's Posse and Riding Club and the 4-H, and he competed in Western Pleasure and Reining contests.

The Eagle Scout was a member of the Tri· State High School Rodeo Association, and he worked breaking and training rodeo and racing colts for the C-T Rodeo Company.

He is a member of the Bareback Riders Team of the Tech Rodeo Association, and he belongs to the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.

During his year as Red Raider, Hopping will use a school-provided pickup truck and horse trailer to transport Happy VI. Another item that goes with the job is a shovel.

One of his first official duties was to clean up mementos of the horse left behind on the floor of the stadium.

Hopping seemed to accept both the privileges and the duties of his new job.

Chapter News Dinner and reception attract 400 in Dallas ·

Bell County Chapter observes Tech Day Bell County ex-students held their annual Tech Day meeting Thursday evening, July 12 at the Bend-of-the-River Ranch picnic grounds. More than 50 exes and friends were present to enjoy the festivities and barbecue supper.

Brian Hall, field director of the Red Raider Club, and Jim Hess, assistant director for the Association, were special guests. Brian brought the group up-to-date on the activities of the Red Raider Club, and Jim gave a briefing on plans of the Association. Robert Coughlin, starting tackle for the Red Raiders, also. spoke to the group and shared his thoughts on the upcoming football season.

Bob Shine, president of the chapter, conducted a short business meeting, and election of officers and directors was held.

Those new officers are: George Gray '74, president; Dr. Bill McCombs III '75, vice president; and Bob Turner '50, secretarytreasurer. Board members elected were Bill Shine '67, Hugh Lackey '55, Mrs. Dana Curry '63 and Joe Reed '73.

The Amarillo chapter of the Ex-Students Association held a reorganizational meeting in conjunction with the Red Raider Club's annual golf outing on June 12. .

Over 175 exes and friends were present to hear Head Coach Rex Dockery, Head Basketball Coach Gerald Myers, Athletic Director bick Tamburo, Ex-Students Director Bill Dean, and Red Raider Club Director Leete Jackson talk about the various programs at Texas Tech.

During a business meeting, AI Cunningham '70 was elected president; Windy Nicklaus '28, vice president; Mrs. Adair Buckner '73, secretary; Kurt Gehring '74, treasurer; and Randy Jeffers '74, reporter.

A second meeting of the Amarillo chapter was held Tuesday evening, July 24, at Wyatt's Cafeteria. Some 50 exes and friends were present to discuss programming and adoption of a constitution and bylaws.

Jim Hess, assist.a nt director of the Association, briefed those in attendanc.e about the selection process in appointing a new president of the University and other recent developments of the Association.

The chapter adopted a dues policy of $5 per family per year to help with chapter expenses and local programs.

A reception and dinner at the Hyatt Regency in Dallc;ls was attended by 400 people July 26. Jessie Pruitt, local Red Raider Club ptesident, ·was master of ceremonies.

The meeting ·was sponsored by the ExStudents Association and Red Raider Club.

Speakers included Bill Dean, executive director of the Ex -Students Association; Dick Tamburo, athletic director; Brian Hall, field representative for the Red Raider Club, who discussed fund raising efforts; Gerald Myers, head basketball coach, who talked about recruiting and prospects for the 1980 season; and Head Football Coach Rex Dockery, who discussed recruiting and prospects for his team this season.

A special guest speaker was sophomore quarterback Ron Reeves, who spoke briefly to the crowd.

Among those present were former board member Anna Belle Collier and Loyalty Fund trustees Larry Byrd and Dr. Ken Talkington. District representatives who were in attendance were Bill DeFee, Alan Brown and Reg Crump.

Mass Comm exes to hold fall meeti~gs Three meetings have been scheduled during the Fall for alumni of Tech's Mass Communications Department.

Homecoming weekend will kick things off with an open house and coffee hosted by the Lubbock area MC alumni Saturday, Nov. 10. Beginning at 9:30 a.m. and lasting until 11:30 a.m., the reception will be held in 223 Mass Communications. Jerry Henderson of Lubbock is the contact person for further · information.

The Dallas-Fort Worth area alumni will host a meeting Friday evening, Nov. 16.

Sixty-five people turned out for a chapter organizational meeting in Fort Worth Aug. 4. The reception and barbecue was held at the Texas Refinery Recreation Center, and was sponsored by the Ex-Students Association.

Clark Briggs, newly elected chapter president, was master of ceremonies. The program was presented by Bill Dean, executive director of the Association; Coaches Gerald Myers, Rex Dockery and Sam Bates. Bates has the Fort Worth area in his recruiting territory.

Dr. Clyde E. Kelsey, vice president of University Relations and Development, was the main speaker at a joint dinner meeting of the Southern California and San Diego chapters on Aug. 25 at the Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach.

Kelsey discussed the current "State of the University," presented a slide presentation on the University and fielded questions from the audience.

Prior to his presentation, Bill Dean, executive director of the Association, discussed the current status of the Association, as well as the presidential search being conducted on campus.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Dean presented the 1978 Red Raider football highlights film . Arrangements for the meeting were under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Reynolds . Forty-eight people attended.

A PERSONAL INVITATION TO ALPHA PHI OMEGA ALUMNI The Beta Sigma chapter of Alpha Phi Omega invites all its alumni to celebrate the chapter's 40th Anniversary at Texas Tech on Nov. 10, 1979. This event is being celebrated in conjunction with Homecoming in order that more alumni will be able to attend.

Following the Homecoming football game in the afternoon, there will be a reception for APO former members in the Coronado Room (second floor) of the University Center (formerly Student Union Building). The reception will be come-and-go and will end about 7:30p.m. Refreshments will be served, and there will be displays and slide shows representing current chapter activities and service projects.

W. Auvena Hufstedler Morton and her husband, John, are living in Levelland. He is a retired automobile dealer and she is a homemaker. They have one son and two daughters, twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren. On June 22, they celebrated ·their 50th wedding anmversary.

Travis Parker, professor of geology at Texas A&M, is .being honored by friends and forme:r students who are establishing the Travis Parker Endowed Scholarship Fund. Dr. Parker has been with the department of geology since 1947.

Gertrude Morse, director of food service at the Tech University Center, is well known for her culinary expertise and recently had one of her recipes named in the top 20 entries in the 1979 National Sandwich Idea Contest. The contest originated 24 years ago to seek out and reward the culinary artistry of U.S. food service professionals. The competition this year was sponsored by the Wheat Flour Institute.

Mrs. Morse entered her recipe for Bacon Pate Burger in the enriched white bread category. After receiving her degree at Tech, Mrs. Morse worked as a registered dietician in nursing homes and hospitals.

She eventually returned to Lubbock and has been at Tech for 26 years. She and her son, Dan, of Lubbock, have recently toured Europe.

*Mark A. Townsend, who was director of the Data Communications Technology and Applications Laboratory at Bell Laboratories in Holmde, N.J., has retired after 34 years of service. He is currently living in Locust, N.J. Clifton H. Cummings has retired as senior vice president of Furr's Inc., having been with Furr's since 1936. He is very active in civic and community activities. He and his wife, Hazel, have two sons and four grandchildren.

Robert E. Graham was honored this summer by the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of his ordination to the ministry. He is pastor at First Presbyterian. He and his wife, Helen, have · three children.

They are living in Dickinson.

Ruby Oringderff has retired from teaching after 15 years teaching second grade in Kress. She and her husband, who is also retired, plan to spend time together qoing things they enjoy.

R. K. Me Coy has retired as principal of Colonial Heights Elementary School in Brownfield. He plans to work in his woodworking shop, go fishing, do crafts and Irish knitting.

Bob Holloway ended a career of 26 years with the Farmers Home Administration by retiring. He has served as county supervisor in the Perryton area for 24 years and plans to continue his farming operations. He and his wife have two daughters. *Rhea Eades Lawton has been elected to a national leadership position in the American Home Economics Association. She will serve as secretary of the group's Extension Professional Section for 1979-81. She has been employed by the University of Connecticut Cooperative Extension field staff in Hartford, Conn. She and her husband, Carl have three children.

He has recently observed his 30-year service anniversary. He and his wife, the former Violet Simpson, are the parents of two sons and two daughters.

Jack Loftin has written a new book on Archer County which was published in August. He has lived on a ranch in southeast Archer County for the past 46 years.

Jack D. Thornton has been appointed division manager, West Texas Division, for Forest Oil Corp. He and his wife, the former Eula Vern Rushing, have moved to Midland.

While at Tech, he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. *Lauro F. Cavazos, dean of Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, Mass., has been presented the Alumni Merit Award

by Iowa State University. Dr. Cavazos received a Ph.D in physiology at Iowa State in 1954.

Fred H . Hays is an administrative·assistant to the city manager in Wichita Falls.

Between preparing the city budget and digging out from the tornado, he still manages to play a few rounds of golf. He and his wife, Sherry, hav~ one son, John.

Susan Tom, who received her JD degree from Tech in '78 is with the staff of City Attorney John Ross in Lubbock.

John W. McNey has graduated with . honors from the Texas Tech School of Law. Judy Jurhee McCormack received her master's degree in communication disorders at the U.T.D. Callier's Center for Communication Disorders and is now working for the Dallas Independent School District as a speech pathologist.

Cynthia Ellen Jones is now working in Houston as a child custody investigator for the Harris County Domestic Relations Courts. After she graduated from Tech, she spent one year as a Fulbright Scholar in Bogota, Columbia, South America. She did graduate work in urban planning and assisted the U.S. Embassy in drug control by working in Colombian jails with American citizens convicted of drug traffic ing.

Gordon and Kandi Williamson have a new son named Timothy. Gordon is working in Dallas for the Foxboro Co., where he is a senior account associate in engineering sales.

Steven M. Matthews recently joined the State of Texas Department of Labor & Standards, Boiler Division as an inspector.

He and his wife, the former Janet LeAnn Henderson, have one son and are living in Irving.

Randy C. and Diane (Hiloski) Tanner have recently bought a home in DeSoto. Diane is employed as a merchandiser with J. C. Penney Co. Inc. and works in Red Bird Mall. Randy is a national accounts calling officer with Mercantile National Bank.

Gary Long has received his master's degree in physical education from Tech. He is assistant varsity baseball coach at Nederland.

Susan E. Snead has graduated from Yale University School of Music and Institute of Sacred Music, earning a Master of Music degree in organ performance. She plans to work in a church music program and also do some freelance keyboard work.

Mark E. Hargrove is a Southwestern Life Insurance Co. career agent at Texas Tech.

William D. Baldwin has been assigned to Denver, Colo., district offices of Monsanto Agricultural Products Co. Pam Bohrer Brotherton is working for Bellefonte Insurance Co. in Dallas. She is a department head over the Corporate Risk Accounting Department. She was previously working for Arthur Andersen & Co. She was married March 24 to Ralph Brotherton, a Baylor graduate. Nyla Jean Medlock Reynolds married Mike Reynolds August 13, 1976. He is employed with Furr's, and Nyla is the assistant ticket manager of the Texas Tech Men's Intercollegiate Athletic Department Ticket Office. They have bought a house in Lubbock. Nyla is enrolled in Tech's graduate school, working on her master's degree in elementary education and reading.

Tom and Sarah (Pancake '77) Nabors are living in Lewisville. Tom is a junior at Baylor College of Dentistry. Sarah teaches second grade in Lewisville. After he graduates, Tom plans to stay in Dallas and set up a general dentistry practice. While at Tech, he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Sarah was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.

Blain G. Holland is film director for KMOM-TV for Monahans, Odessa and Midland. He is living in Monahans. He is a runner and runs 2-3 miles a day.

Everyone knows that "you can't take it with you" and that it is wise to plan ahead for a constructive way to leave your property. There are a number of reasons why a valid and up-to-date will is important to you and your loved ones.

For instance, you, not the state's arbitra.r y intestacy laws, should determine to whom, how and when your property should be distributed. Likewise, you, instead of some unknown judge, should name the executor who will manage and settle your estate according to your desires. Many times, expensive bonds can be avoided.

A will is also important to persons with families so that they can designate the guardian who can raise their minor children and manage their property. In addition, a will can . create a trust for your spouse, children and others to protect them against loss which might result from their inexperience in financial affairs.

Trusts can also save you taxes. Estate taxes are often reduced, and sometimes eliminated, through a will. Another advantage of a will is that you can specify whose share of the estate will be charged with whatever taxes there might be.

There are a number of reasons why a person's will should be reviewed periodically. One of these is that both federal and state tax laws have changed and these changes may affect the taxes on your estate. A review will also help you to make sure that any child born after the will was written is included and that some beneficiary is not already deceased.

When your will is prepared, or when your will is revised, we hope you will consider a bequest to the Texas Tech ExStudents Association Endowment Trust. All gifts to the Endowment Trust are invested and will remain intact from now on. Only the interest will be spent each year. So, the benefits of a bequest will go on and on.

If you have no will, now is a good time to make one. If you have a will, now is a good time to have it reviewed in light of current circumstances.

Obituaries

Vigness Dr. David M. Vigness, 56, former Texas Tech history department chairman, for 18 years, died July 16. He was dead on arrival at Methodist Hospital following an apparent heart attack. A native of Cameron County, he married Winifred Woods in Lubbock in 1949. He received his degrees from the Shriner Institute in Kerrville and the Univer· sity of Texas. He taught at the Shriner lnsti· tute before coming to Lubbock in 1955. He served as chairman of the Fullbright Ad vi· sory Committee at Texas Tech, on the Texas Commission for Humanities for eight years, was a fellow of the Texas State His· torical Association and was listed in both the Who's Who in America and Southwest. He was a member of the Lubbock Rotary Club, the board of the Austin Theological Semi· nary, elder of the First Presbyterian Church and a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Survivors include his wife; a son, Richard, of Houston; a daughter, Mrs. Gary (Margaret) Ford, of Houston; his mother, Mrs. L. M. Vigness, of Weslaco; two sisters, Mrs. J. G. Jiminez, of Houston and Ruthe Ellen, of Rochester, Minn.

Preston Services were held for Howard G. Preston, 71, Shallowater civic leader and former mayor. He died in his home after a long illness. He was a member of the class of '36.

Mr. Preston was instrumental in obtaining a charter for incorporation for the city of Shal· lowater and served as its mayor for three and a half terms. He was a charter director of the First State Bank of Shallowater, served 10 years on the Shallowater School Board and was director of the Shallowater Cooperative Gin for 24 years. He married the former Floyce Snodgrass '34 in 1937. He had taught public schools for 12 years. Sur· vivors include his wife, three sons, a brother, two sisters and six grandchildren.

Shadde.n Bryan C. Shadden, 31, a '71 graduate of Tech, died Aug. 10. He was killed when the truck he was driving and a car collided six miles south of Levelland. He was a former Idalou resident who moved to Abernathy in 1977. He was a farmer and a member of the First Baptist Church. While at Tech he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. His wife is the former Sharon May. He had two daughters, Sunshine and Summer.

Barnett

Furr Mrs. Roy (Lela) Furr, wife of the late founder of Furr's Supermarkets, died Aug. 28. A native of Santa Anna, Mrs. Furr grew up in Kirkland where she attended school.

She attended Clarendon Junior College and the University of Oklahoma. She married Roy Furr in Kirkland, and the couple moved to Lubbock in 1929. He was a school teacher who built a supermarket empire and then branched into cafeterias, food packaging operations, oil and real estate. The Furr family supported many causes and projects on the Tech c~mpus, including the ExStudents Association Homecoming Luncheon. Mrs. Furr was a member of First United Methodist Church and had been active in charity work. Survivors include two sons, Don G. and Roy K., both of Lubbock; a daughter, Mrs. Jack R. Hall of Lubbock; a brother, Garth Close of Fort Worth; a sister, Mrs. W. G. Thomas of Childress; 12 grandchildren and six great -grandchildren.

Gene V. Barnett, 66, vocational agriculture teacher at Plainview High School from 1947 until his retirement last year, died Aug. 7. He was a member of the class of '39. After graduation he taught school in Memphis from 1939·1944, then served as county agent at Claude from 1944-1945. After that he was head coach at Vernon High School until 1947 when he went to Plainview. He was deacon of the First Baptist Church since 1950. He was a member of Breakfast Optimist Club and the Lettermans Club at Tech.

His wife is the former Beryl Duff '40. Other survivors include four sons, three brothers, a sister and six grandchildren.

Bridges Claude Ventry Bridges, 31, a Texas Tech · graduate student, was found murdered in his home Aug. 21. He was found by his professor, who had become concerned when Bridges missed the orals test for his dissertation. He was a doctoral degree candidate in education.

Harvest Moon, Hunter's Moon , Halloween Moon, Coyote Moon , Silvery Moon, Moon Over Miami! or simply a full moonyou '11 never see prettier than in the October skies over West Texas.

As the evening air turns brisk, the western horizon bursts into brilliant color with the setting sun, and the eastern skies equally match the spectacle with the rising full moon.

Sometimes the moon cDl appears in a pulse of radia; ..., ting white light, beaming :r 0 brighter than you've ever a Dl seen it before. Other times, in true Harvest Moon > fashion , it ushers in the night as a huge, bright orange sphere.

The Hunter's Moon arrives very soon after sunset for several successive evenings. It allows farmers extra hours of light in which to harvest their crops before winter's first frost.

Then there's the Halloween Moon late in the month, when we're lucky, -a favorite of children and young-at-heart adults who fantacize about witches on broomstick flying across the dark Autumn skies, visible only as they pass in front of the full moon.

But my favorite is "that old devil moon," made famous in the musical "Finian's Rainbow. " This moon has the special power to reflect itself in the eyes of one you hold dear, causing butterflies in your stomach and stars in your eyes.

There are numerous superstitions and legends about the full moon , ranging from the Werewolf stories to sleeping in the beam of a full moon causing clumsiness!

In agriculture , there are "rules" relating to the moon: for instance, only planting potatoes in the light of a full moon, and my ag friends tell me that one ONLY does "certain things to male hogs!·" by the full moon .

All superstitions aside, I know for fact that the full Autumn moon does things to me-it makes me like being close to someone special , wrapped up in a heavy sweater or soft wool shirt, whether at a Tech football game or afterwards .

I think that people of all ages can appreciate brisk fall weather and the full Autumn moon , particularly if they just let themselves forget the problems of the job, responsibilities and age . There is somet hing so nice about being close to the one special person in your life under a big, romantic full moon. If you don't believe me , just try it.

Modern man has taken some of the wonder out of the moon and replaced it with an awe of a scientific nature. That's fine. But leave me here to walk arm in arm or to snuggle in an old wool plaid blanket. I prefer to enjoy the Autumn moon my own way, and let me tell you , it ain't half bad!
