About “Soaring Above” (the pictorial feature Jennifer Ritz created for our November/December 2019 issue) My compliments, Ms. Cantore, on an excellent publication. The Techsan is a beautiful promotion of our great institution.

But “Soaring Above” was especially meaningful to me. Perhaps in some musty old filing cabinets someone might still find some black-and-white negatives of aerials that were taken in 1962 or ’63.

In those days, I was the staff photographer for the Tech Public Information Office, and when I got an assignment, that made my day! The Army had a recruiting display on campus that featured a Bell H-13 helicopter. (You know, the kind featured on the MASH TV series).

The Army had called and offered the Public Information Office its use if we wanted to take aerial photos. The obvious answer was, “Yes! And Thank You!” I grabbed my camera, a Mamiyaflex twin-lens reflex, and a supply of blackand-white film (we rarely used color since most of what we shot wound up in newspapers) and headed for the parking lot where I was to meet my ride.

For an hour, we hovered over the various buildings while I obtained stock photos that were used over and over for the next several years. But when I saw the beautiful color images of today’s campus, it is totally unlike anything I remembered. In fact, only two photos in your spread included anything that I had photographed … the one of the Dairy Barn with the Library in the background and of course, Jones Stadium … but it too has changed drastically.

Everything else is either new or, like the Alumni Center, totally restructured.

I graduated from Tech in 1967 with a master’s in broadcasting (the first broadcasting graduate degree Tech granted) and a minor in journalism and spent the next 30+ years in television and photography with 20 years working in Washington, D.C. I’ve been back to Lubbock many times and every time, I am astounded at the changes that have occurred. After all, when I was there, the student population was only about 8,000.

If you see Bill Dean, say “Hello!” for me. My office was across the hall from his in the old Journalism Building for several years.

Brighten our Future IN NOV EM BER, I registered for the 61st Annual Carol of Lights® banquet hosted by the Residence Hall Association to be held here at the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center. Last year, my first to attend, was a great event that paid tribute to all the people behind the scenes who make Carol of Lights® the wonderful event that it is.

On a campus rich in tradition, I don’t know if there’s a more unique and timeless event than the night we flip the switch with thousands of Red Raiders on the Science Quad and Memorial Circle, oftentimes braving the cold, to experience that magical moment when the campus lights up. Born and raised here, I have childhood memories of the event. The Texas Tech Trombone Choir’s “T Cubed Fanfare,” (Google it!) the Texas Tech University Choir’s Christmas hymns and the late William Hartwell’s rendition of “O Holy Night” are treasured memories that are part of our alumni’s past. The tradition continues to this day. Although the luminarias don’t have actual candles as I remember them, they still light the pathways in anticipation of what’s to come, as the Carillon sets the scene. But it’s at that crescendo moment, after the singing of “Silent Night,” that the bulbs light up like thousands of carolers joining in the chorus. The cheers, “oohs” and “ahhs” that follow, with the Victory Bells chiming in, creates an unforgettable moment that is a part of our proud identity as Red Raiders.

In addition to all the student work leading up to the event, the university’s ground maintenance crew achieves the heroic task year after year of stringing up the lights and taking them down after the holidays. My own neighbor Rich Cartwright helps oversee this process, and I said to him what a headache it must be to have to replace bad bulbs here and there.

“There are some that have to be replaced, but most are reliable,” he said.

I couldn’t help but make the correllation with our Alumni Association members, most of whom renew year after year.

They’re like bulbs we can rely on and don’t have to replace, helping to brighten Texas Tech’s future as we approach our Centennial.

Because you’re reading this column in the Texas Techsan, you’re like a bulb burning bright for our alma mater. And if you’re a longtime consecutive giver, you’re a bulb we don’t have to replace! As I sign the acknowledgements that come across my desk, I’m continuously amazed at so many faithful supporters who have maintained membership for so long — one at 75 years, in fact (Choc Hutcheson ’48 and the late Virginia Hutcheson ’48). For the first time, this issue begins the process of celebrating our 50-year members and above. These are some steady bulbs who should be recognized, along with a good number of other supporters who are nearing that mark.

Membership matters. Sustaining membership matters more and is the key to our growth, as we strive to build momentum.

With some 201,000 addressable alumni and about 30,000 members, I’m often asked, “Why don’t we have even more members?” It’s a common question many other alumni associations struggle with as well. While our numbers are admirable to those at peer institutions, we’re working to strengthen our game.

It’s also important to remind our alumni that the Texas Tech Alumni Association is unusual as a nationally self-governing, self-sustaining organization, alongside fewer than 30 nationally that can make such a claim. As an independent association, the dollars we provide for the university don’t cost the university a dollar to generate. This feat doesn’t happen without a strong, sustained membership, at whatever level our members can and choose to invest. We’re grateful for them all, year after year.

In concert with Carol of Lights®, our membership renewal campaign this winter is “Brighten Our Future,” as those renewing during the winter months have already received in the mail.

I am sharing this campaign with all of our members in this column, as a thank you for your steadfast support — much like a bulb we can depend on to burn brightly.

If you know fellow Red Raiders who may not be members, encourage them to belong and to be a part of something bigger than themselves. Imagine Carol of Lights® with only a few bulbs burning here and there vs. the brilliance of all bulbs burning together. It’s a good parallel with which I believe all Red Raiders can identify. I am thrilled that we are stringing up a portion of the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center in lights, just like the core campus, in honor of all our members, such as you.

TEDD L. MITCHELL, M.D., HAS STEPPED DOWN FROM HIS TENURE AS TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER PRESIDENT TO FOCUS SOLELY ON HIS ROLE AS TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY SYSTEM CHANCELLOR. Mitchell’s transition to the full-time position of chancellor went into effect Nov. 1. He served in the dual appointment as chancellor and president for the last year, leading the TTU System through a historic 86th Texas Legislature that added two new professional degree programs and schools – dental and veterinary medicine.

Mitchell dedicated nine years to the TTUHSC as president, representing the longest-tenured president in TTUHSC history. He successfully led the university to a period of historic milestones, record growth in enrollment, academic excellence and physical campus expansion.

The TTUHSC now graduates more health care professionals than any other health-related institution in Texas.

Under Mitchell’s leadership, the TTUHSC is closing in on its $100 million goal associated with its first fundraising campaign.

THE ANNUAL RAIDER RED MEATS BARBECUE & RIBEYE CHAMPIONSHIP WAS HELD AUG. 23-24.

THIS EVENT HIGHLIGHTS COOKS LOCALLY AND NATIONWIDE WHILE RAISING SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS FOR TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY STUDENTS. Raider Red Meats, a part of the Meat Science & Muscle Biology program, has funded scholarships for Texas Tech students since 1982. All proceeds from this event go into the endowment fund to sponsor scholarships for students within the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources. Sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, the competition serves as the Texas state championship and is open to competitors around the nation. It is consistently the largest contributor to the scholarship fund.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY HAS BEEN RANKED AS ONE OF THE 100 SAFEST COLLEGES IN THE UNITED STATES AND FIFTH-SAFEST CAMPUS IN TEXAS. TEXAS TECH HAS TAKEN SEVERAL MEASURES TO ENHANCE SAFETY THROUGHOUT THE CAMPUS INCLUDING INCREASED POLICE PRESENCE. Data used for the ranking was collected from the Bureau of Justice, the U.S. Department of Education, the National Center for Education Statistics and Inside Higher Ed. At more than 1,800 acres, Texas Tech is one of the largest college campuses in the country in terms of size, and it has numerous entry points to the university grounds on all sides. Maintaining campus security is not only a priority but also a continuing effort to deter crime and help authorities investigate and solve crimes that happen on campus. Texas Tech recently instituted a program to install security cameras at random locations across campus and updated the existing ones. Tech has also increased the number of license-plate readers around campus. Several locations are equipped with the readers to help monitor traffic and help police locate a vehicle by point of entrance if a situation arises.

AS MASKED RIDER HORSE FEARLESS CHAMPION TOOK TO THE SIDELINE TO REST, CODY TOOK HIS PLACE TO RUN AT THE FOOTBALL GAMES AGAIN IN 2019. Due to inflammation in Fearless Champion’s front legs, the vet suggested that he take it easy to avoid major injuries. Cody, the black gelding from Archer City, again filled in for Fearless Champion by running at the football games as he did last year when Fearless Champion was injured. Fearless Champion continued to participate in less strenuous activities such as school visits and meeting with fans, while Cody came back out of retirement into the spotlight.

The School of Theatre & Dance also conducted public tours of the complex, showcasing the addition of more than 50,000-square feet of space to the existing building.

Each fall at Homecoming, the Texas Tech Alumni Association welcomes Red Raiders back to their alma mater to celebrate their connections to Texas Tech University and with each other. The weekend also provides the perfect opportunity to recognize alumni achievements.

At the annual Matador Evening dinner in 2019, the association honored Jim and Jere Lynn Burkhart with the Lauro F. Cavazos Award. Named after the university’s 10th president, the Lauro F. Cavazos Award is presented to individuals or couples who have made significant contributions to Texas Tech University and Texas Tech Alumni Association through service, public recognition or financial support.

This year’s Distinguished Service Awards went to Ethan Logan, Ph.D., associate vice president for enrollment management, and Michael San Francisco, Ph.D., biology professor and dean of the Honors College. This award recognizes outstanding service to Texas Tech University or the Alumni Association. Alumni, friends of Texas Tech, as well as current and former employees of the university are eligible to receive the award or to submit a nomination.

The inaugural Brent F. Ross Fearless Champion Award was presented to Davian-Lynn Hopkins, who will graduate with two bachelor’s degrees in May 2020. The honor is named for Brent Ross, associate vice president of marketing for the Texas Tech Alumni Association, who passed away in 2017 at the age of 42, following a courageous seven-year battle with Stage Four metastatic melanoma. He exemplified integrity, lived life to the fullest and demonstrated his love for Texas Tech. His courage, selflessness and dedication set Brent apart from many others. No matter how difficult it became, he refused to give up on life, even until the end. He was a beloved husband, father, co-worker and friend.

LAURO F. CAVAZOS AWARD After their grandson’s autism diagnosis, Jim and Jere Lynn Burkhart became trailblazers for autism research and awareness before professional services for those affected by it or education about the Autism Spectrum Disorder were available.

They established the Burkhart Center for Autism Research and Education at Texas Tech University in 2005. Since then, they also have established the Jere Lynn Burkhart Professor and Endowed Chair in the College of Education, as well as the Burkhart Family Endowed Lecture Series. Jim and Jere Lynn, along with the Texas Tech Autism Center staff, helped establish a similar center at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama, the only such facility in the State of Alabama. Faulkner University also awarded Jere Lynn Burkhart an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD Ethan Logan, Ph.D., a Lubbock native, has been on staff at Texas Tech University for more than 20 years. He has served as associate vice president for Enrollment Management, overseeing the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the Student Financial Aid & Scholarships Office, the Office of Enrollment Management Marketing and the University Registrar’s Office since 2016. While an undergraduate student, Logan worked in the Student Activities Office and in the Student Union as an evening building manager.

After graduation, he began his career in higher education at McMurry University. He returned to Texas Tech University in 1999, working again as a member of the Student Activities Staff. Later that year, he became assistant dean of students. Logan continued in the Division of Student Affairs as director for Student Judicial Programs and as associate dean of students. In 2008, he worked in Enrollment Management serving as both director and then executive director for Undergraduate Admissions. He earned three degrees from Texas Tech, his bachelor’s degree in literature in 1995, master’s in higher education in 1996 and doctorate of higher education administration in 2010.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD Michael San Francisco, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and an adjunct professor in the Department of Immunology & Molecular Microbiology at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, is dean of the Honors College. He is also is director of the Clark Scholars Program.

He joined the Texas Tech University faculty in 1990 as a tenure-track assistant professor. He served as interim chair of the Department of Biological Sciences, director of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute-funded Undergraduate Research Scholars Program, associate dean of the Honors College, associate vice president for research and interim vice president for research.

San Francisco has taught continually since 1990 and has graduated 12 doctoral and 10 master’s degree students from his laboratory. He has been undergraduate research mentor to more than 60 students. The National Science Foundation, United States Department of Agriculture, National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Defense have funded his internationally published research. A native of Colombo, Sri Lanka, he and his family moved to India when he was a young boy. He earned his bachelor’s degree in agriculture in 1977 in India. He attended Boston University earning his master’s and doctoral degrees in biology in 1980 and 1984, respectively. He conducted post-doctoral research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Molecular Microbiology and at Ohio State University in Biotechnology.

BRENT ROSS FEARLESS CHAMPION AWARD Davian-Lynn Hopkins will graduate in May 2020 with two bachelor’s degrees – one in fine arts in graphic design and arts in Electronic Media & Communication.

He has been involved in many student organizations, most notably “La Ventana,” the Texas Tech University yearbook. He is currently serving his fourth term as editor-in-chief of the publication, something no one else has done. Hopkins has garnered many national journalism recognitions for Texas Tech, including being a finalist in the College Media Association’s Pinnacle Award competition, which recognizes the nation’s Yearbook of the Year.

He has completed six internships during his time as an undergraduate at Texas Tech, including two with advertising firms in Lubbock, two stints as a graphic/ digital design intern with the Federal Reserve in Dallas, an art/production internship with D Magazine in Dallas, as well as a multicultural advertising firm in New York.

Hopkins has been an active member of RaiderComm PR, Talkington Hall Complex Council, The Motion Picture Project and Kappa Tau Alpha Honor Society, serving as president for at least two of them. Upon graduation, he anticipates moving to New York City and working as a designer in either the publication, design or advertising industry.

TEXAS VINES AND WINES PART 2

T

he High Plains of Texas is a dichotomy of sorts. For most of its history, the climate wasn’t the only thing that was dry. May of 2019 marked Lubbock’s first decade as a “wet” city.

Yes, prior to 2009 you could purchase alcohol in restaurants and bars. Yes, there was “the strip” on Highway 87 outside the city limits, where the liquor stores that lined the road resembled Las Vegas more than anything you’d see in West Texas.

So the idea that this region has become a sort of a mecca for Texas wine grapes is, to say the least, unexpected and unusual. Consumption of alcoholic beverages on the High Plains isn’t a huge part of the culture and it stands in stark contrast to one of the Texas cities where it sends lots of grapes: Fredericksburg. Settled by Germans whose culture has always included beer, biergartens, all-night dances (involving lots of beer) and festivals built around beer, Fredericksburg is a world apart from the Lubbock area. Ask anyone new to Texas what Fredericksburg is known for, the likely answer is “wine.” Either way, the Hill Country town is known for its alcohol and festive atmosphere.

The two alumni featured in this article come from two different sides of the wine-grape equation. Kim McPherson weighs in on the vintner, or wine-making side; whereas, Andy Timmons weighs in on the viticulture, or grape-growing side.

Kim isn’t the only family member who’s involved in the wine industry. His brother, Jon, has been a winemaker for more than 30 years in Temecula, California, near San Diego.

Kim’s wife, Sylvia Burillo McPherson, owns La Diosa Cellars near McPherson Cellars in Lubbock’s Depot District. Their daughter, Kassandra McPherson, is an advanced sommelier in California. The family continues its rich history of promoting and producing wine.

If Texas had a royal family for winemaking, Kim McPherson would be its king — a title he will tell you he inherited from his father. Kim owns McPherson Cellars and is part owner of 4.0 Cellars in Fredericksburg. Kim was steeped in wine culture from a very young age.

Kim’s parents, Clinton “Doc” McPherson, Ph.D. ’47, ’52, ’59 and Clara Mueller McPherson, ’43, ’47 were both professors at Texas Tech. Clara was instrumental in bringing to life the Restaurant, Hotel & Institutional Management degree in the College of Human Sciences. Doc and co-worker Bob Reed put their heads together in the late 1960s and began experimenting with grape growing. What these two men were able to accomplish set the stage for the state’s wine industry.

“My dad (Doc) was a Saddle Tramp when he was in college,” says Kim. “He would make peach wine for the Saddle Tramps’ get-togethers. They didn’t have grapes, but they had a lot of peaches. Years later, the university was tearing out a vineyard (that was near the Robert J. Ewalt Student Recreation Center) and my dad said to Bob, ‘We need to get some of those grape vines.’ So they went and they got six vines, or eight vines of red

grape. They didn’t know what it was. And they planted it in the back of Bob’s backyard over his patio. And they overgrew. It was incredible, man…

And it was loaded with grapes. Then they said, ‘But what are we going to do with these?’ They decided to make jelly and sell it.”

Later, Kim says, they decided to use their plentiful crop to make wine. They called that first wine Patio.

“I’m not sure we ever found out what variety those grapes were,” says Kim with a grin.

Those first vines and the Patio wine was all the inspiration Doc needed to convince Reed to start their own small vineyard.

Not only did Doc and Reed start growing grapes, they helped found the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association. As Doc was developing the state’s fledgling wine industry in the early 1970s,

he was entering a stage in West Texas that was still largely dry and, in the areas that weren’t dry, were dominated by liquor stores. These liquor stores were owned by different types of businessmen, such as Tom “Pinkie” Roden. Pinkie (1911-1989) was the founder of Pinkie’s liquor stores. He was known widely across West Texas for bootlegging, operating gambling establishments and other illicit activities.

Pinkie’s reputation didn’t deter Doc, who met with Pinkie and other liquor store owners as well as politicians and state leaders — all in an effort to establish and promote the Texas wine industry.

In 1976, Doc and Reed constructed Llano Estacado Winery, one of the state’s first post-Prohibition wineries. This feat was especially notable because they succeeded in an area of Texas that was still largely dry. The Llano Estacado Winery is outside of Lubbock because it couldn’t be constructed within the city limits, as Lubbock would be dry until 2009.

“And he (Doc) made it out of brick because he said, ‘People are going to shoot at this when they find out it’s a winery,’” Kim says. “And they damn sure did. There were bullet holes. That’s why all the tanks were inside.

They couldn’t even have a tasting room because that was still illegal.”

McPherson says Doc went to Odessa and met with Pinkie Roden, who’d become influential with Texas politicians, to acquire his blessing to open a tasting room and sell wine. Soon after receiving the nod, the Texas legislature changed the law and Doc was able to legally open a tasting room and produce 25,000 gallons of wine a year.

Clinton “Doc” McPherson, Ph.D., is known as the “Father of Texas Wine.” The first vineyard he planted in Lubbock County was visited by First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson in 1968.

One hundred percent of the grapes Kim uses in his wines are grown on the Texas High Plains.

When Kim was an undergrad pursuing his bachelor of science in food technology, one of his professors, Max Miller, Ph.D., set him up in an internship with Carnation Dairy in downtown Los Angeles. He spent every summer working for Carnation in L.A., and met and fell in love with his wife, Sylvia Burillo McPherson. She followed Kim back to Lubbock and earned a degree in interior design in 1984.

Following graduation, Kim returned to California and was knee-deep in the wine industry himself at University of California-Davis.

“I took every class that they offered in enology and viticulture,” Kim notes. “I got a job in Napa and not long after that my Dad called and asked if I’d come back to run Llano (Estacado Winery).”

Kim returned to Lubbock in 1979. By 1990 he was the winemaker for Cap*Rock Winery, where he stayed until 2007. In 2000, during his time at Cap*Rock, he created his own label. Toward the end of his tenure at Cap*Rock, Kim turned his eye to opening his own winery. After extensive renovations to an old Coca-Cola bottling plant, he opened McPherson Cellars in 2008.

Kim is dedicated to continuous improvement of Texas grapes and Texas wines. He procures 100 percent of his grapes from High Plains growers and has an encyclopedic knowledge of what is currently being grown and what producers should aim to grow.

“My deal is that we’re not growing the right grapes up here,” he says. “We need to grow Mourvedre, the Rome stuff, and the Spanish stuff, and some Italian stuff, that does the best. The heat…our climate mimics their climates (Spain and Italy),” Kim says.

Kim says he has caught flak from winemakers because he quit making certain wines, like Cabernet, because those varietals do not thrive on the High Plains.

“But you can’t you be growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and everything else and then expect to get any sort of notoriety or respect. So…I got on the band wagon and I cut out Cabernet and everybody says, ‘Gosh Kim, you’re an idiot.’ My response is, we can’t do Cab. We can’t do Cab like they can in Napa.”

An example of a grape that loves the High Plains AVA is the Italian Sangiovese. Doc was the first to plant the variety in West Texas and Kim calls it his flagship red.

“We’ve made Sangiovese since 1998 and we sell out of it every year,” Kim says. “And I make 1,400 cases. It probably took me about four years to really convince people that we could make old world style wine that was good. When I first started, when we first planted it and I would take it to restaurants…I’d have a brown bag, and we’d pour it in Austin and Dallas (restaurants), and they’d say, ‘God man, is that something Italian? What winery is this?’ And then you peel back the paper and they’d be shocked.”

Regardless of criticism, Kim continues with what he knows: producing excellent wine. He has received almost 500 awards for his wines and was a 2019 finalist for a James Beard Foundation Award (see sidebar) in the Outstanding Wine, Spirits or Beer Producer category.

Kim’s wines have garnered hundreds of awards.

James Beard was dubbed “Dean of American Cookery” by the New York Times in 1954. He hosted television’s first cooking show in 1946 and opened cooking schools in New York and Oregon. He promoted American gastronomy, pushing locally grown and marketed foods, as he traveled America passing along his skills and knowledge to every level of those involved in the food and hospitality industries. Following his death in 1985, the James Beard Foundation was established. One of the outcroppings of the foundation is the annual James Beard Foundation Awards, which are America’s food and beverage version of the Academy Awards.

Then there’s Andy Timmons, who grew up in Brownfield, in erry County, Texas, where the majority of Texas grapes are grown. By his own admission, he was raised in a family of teetotalers who were active in the Baptist Church. They not only eschewed wine, but any alcoholic beverage.

“I grew up with the stigma that alcohol was bad and everything around alcohol was bad,” explains Andy, who earned a bachelor of science in crops in 1992. “And as I got out into the world more, I realized that if you don’t treat it like something that’s taboo, then maybe people won’t go wild on it when they leave home and go to college. For a lot of people, it’s a part of life and it’s not something that’s abused. And, especially wine, I think is so different because it is oftentimes seen as being part of the meal.

“I thought Jesus changed water into grape juice, but he didn’t. He changed it into wine,” jokes Andy.

Andy, who enjoys wine today, is known across Texas as one of the most talented and prolific viticulturists. He also has a hand in the grape harvest process as well as his own wine label. As mentioned in Part I of this twopart feature story, Andy is also part-owner in Fredericksburg’s Lost Draw Cellars. While he was growing up, both sides of Andy’s family farmed. He married his high school sweetheart, Lauren, whose family also farmed. He notes that they grew mostly cotton, until around 1995, when they began

rotating in peanuts. The late 1990s and early 2000s had a number of drouthy years, which saw the water tables continually drop. Frustrated with the drain on his water supplies, Andy listened when a friend encouraged him to consider yet another crop.

“A good friend of mine, his family had had vineyards since the ’80s,” Andy says. “His dad was retiring and my friend was taking over the vineyard. He says, ‘I’ll help you plant five acres if you’ll agree to grow grapes. I just don’t want to do it all myself. It’d be great if you would come and we could partner on equipment and help each other harvest.’

“And so then I had to start looking around and trying to figure out where I was going to plant. And we finally settled on an old piece of ground that we had put in CRP (USDA’s Farm Service Agency’s conservation reserve program). Our family determined that it was basically worthless as a cotton farm. It didn’t have a whole lot of water, the soil wasn’t that great, it was on a draw and really hard to farm. So,

TEXAS GRAPES Andy Timmons notes that the High Plains AVA shares many of the same qualities as California, but it’s harder to grow grapes here.

“We have hail, we have late-spring freezes,” Andy explains. “So the battle up here is, you want the grapes to struggle a little bit during certain periods of time. So, in some places they can struggle all the way up until they go into dormancy and they’re fine. But they don’t have quite the harsh winters we do. So, what we have to do is to get them, when they break bud, super healthy, powered up, ready to go. And then when they set a crop, when they have the little green berries on them, we pull off the water and we let them dry out until they get big enough and they start what’s called veraison, it’s when the grapes turn purple. Then we’ll start mitering the water back to them gradually. But as soon as we harvest, we have to put the water back to them because they have to be healthy going into winter. And so if they’re not healthy there’s a good chance that they’ll die out in the winter.”

Andy says much of his knowledge has been gained through self-education via research articles on the Internet.

“I can get on and read any research proposal, any research that’s ever been done, any article,” he says.

“Then, the ability to travel and correspond with people that you meet and develop relationships through social media, or email, or whatever, has totally changed the learning curve.

“All the basic knowledge I learned at Tech about how plants grow helps. Every plant develops similarly and they develop in similar ways. The only thing diffe ent about grapes in Terry County is that it’s the only crop that I’ve ever grown that I can actually over water. I never had enough water for cotton, or peanuts, or corn, or wheat. I had adequate water to make a decent yield…We didn’t use soil moisture meters or anything like that because…no matter what happens, you’re not going to have enough (water). But in grapes, you can actually over water.”

AND THAT'S ABOUT 275 THOUSAND BALES OF COTTON.” we planted that and this happened to be on the Lost Draw, and that’s how we came up with the name Lost Draw for the vineyard here and winery in Fredericksburg.”

Andy’s first vines were planted in 2005, and he discovered it dovetailed into his current farming operations. It didn’t require specialized or extra manpower and allowed his employees to continue working year-round.

“So we did five (acres) and really enjoyed it, and I started getting into the industry and meeting people in the industry, and found out that there was a big need for more grapes,” Andy notes. “Well, really any of the other crops we grew, there wasn’t a need for it.

Whether you grew it or not, the process was going to be the same.

And so we started planting more grapes and we finally finished out that block, which was 45 acres.”

Soon he partnered with a couple from Colorado, who had lived in Brownfield previously. Together they planted 100 acres and named it La Pradera Vineyards. In 2013 Andy and Lauren moved from Brownfield closer to Lubbock, and built a home on 20 acres.

“We put another 20 acres around our house there north of Wolfforth,” he says. “And then about three years ago, an investor came in from Manhattan — not Kansas — Manhattan, New York. He lives in Manhattan and he had some ties to this area. He put in 140 acres of grapes, and we manage it. And then we have several other smaller vineyards, three to 10 acres, that we manage. And, my dad has 20 acres that we help him manage. So, we have about 300 acres.”

Since planting his first vines in 2005, Andy has tirelessly studied the grape and wine industry. He wants to see Terry County continue to plant more grapes in lieu of cotton.

“If you can take Terry County, which is probably the epicenter of the grape expansion, as a bullseye and then draw concentric circles.

You’re going to see grapes planted, but not to the extent that you have in Terry County,” Andy explains. “I did some figuring, and 10,000 acres of grapes would equal the same amount of gross revenue as the largest cotton crop ever produced in Terry County. And that’s about 275 thousand bales of cotton.”

When Andy first began growing grapes, he says there weren’t enough acres being grown to support the demand in Texas. Andy has helped area farmers put in roughly 1,500 acres of grapes. High Plains grape producers have been so prodigious that there is now a grape surplus. The push now is to increase the amount of wine the state produces.

In addition to consulting with farmers who want to begin growing grapes, Andy saw a need for a facility to process the area’s grapes. In 2017, he established Texas Wine Company, a custom grape crushing facility in Meadow, Texas, 11 miles north of Brownfield.

“We started this because we were getting big enough that we tried to ship (the grapes) and that wasn’t working,” notes Andy.

“We have our vineyards as well as about 15 to 20 different customers. Some of them take 200 tons, some of them take two. And so, trying to handle shipping in a harvest that mainly happens at night, it’s difficult.”

They needed a crush facility that was close to the vineyards.

Grapes need to be crushed as soon as possible following harvest.

Texas Wine Company offers full-service crush, fermentation and barrel aging. The facility also has an in-house lab that ensures every client’s need is being met and proper protocols are being applied.

Andy marvels at the farming changes that have come to an area that was once known solely for cotton. Only 15 years ago, he was inching his way into the grape business, only to now find he has become a titan in the Texas wine industry.

ANIMALS After years of speculation, ups and downs, what-ifs and it’ll never happens, it has finally happened.

At 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, 2019, Texas Tech officials broke ground on the Texas Tech School of Veterinary Medicine at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Amarillo campus at 1280 S. Coulter Street. Located on the north side of the existing TTUHSC campus in Amarillo, the academic building site will be named the School of Veterinary Medicine Amarillo Campus. An additional large-animal facility located two miles away will be named the School of Veterinary Medicine Mariposa Station.

The school anticipates opening in the fall of 2021 and will enroll a target class size of 60 students. Graduates of the School of Veterinary Medicine will be prepared to serve small, agricultural and regional communities in Texas.

During the 2019 legislative session, Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law the state budget for the next two years, which appropriated $17.35 million that will go toward operational needs in order to get the school up and running. Donors and civic leaders have pledged $90 million toward infrastructure and construction, which made this groundbreaking possible.

he is known for her numerous awards, her dedication to Texas Tech University and her devoted service to the Lubbock community; however, Joyce Ann (Davis) Arterburn is most recognizable as a woman who has a passionate love for her family above all else.

Of course that compassion is given to her relatives first, but her genuine care and welcoming spirit also extend to others in her life who quickly feel like family.

Originally from Denver City, Texas, Joyce and her family moved to Lubbock her junior year of high school, where her dad was the principal at Lubbock High School and her mother was an elementary school teacher.

Joyce first met her late husband, E.F. “Junior” Arterburn, Jr., while she was in high school and he was at Texas Tech playing football. Joyce earned her physical education bachelor’s degree in 1954 and her physical education master’s degree in 1966. Junior received a BBA in accounting in 1952 and master’s degree in education in 1972. They married in 1955.

Joyce and Junior moved back to Lubbock when Junior returned from the United States Navy and finished his professional football career with the Chicago Cardinals. Joyce became a physical education professor at Texas Tech and Junior worked as the director of Graduate Admissions. Together they raised three children – Diana Arterburn Mullins (BSE ’80 Elementary Education, M.Ed. ’84 Education), David J. Arterburn (BS ’81 Recreation, M.Ed. ’89 Physical Education) and Don R Arterburn, Ph.D. (BS ’84 Physical Education, Ph.D. ’02 Marriage and Family Therapy).

“Oh, my husband and I had a great relationship,” Joyce says. “He let me be me, and I let him be him. My children are very loving and care about each other, Junior and me. We did pretty good.”

The Arterburns’ daughter, Mullins, says when she thinks about her mom, she thinks about her unconditional love for her and her family.

“She has been a constant source of encouragement and a channel of God’s love to me, my brothers and my dad, all my life,” Mullins says. “She believes in all of us and unselfishly serves all our needs with a smile and warm hugs.

“She taught me by example to be a hard worker and strive to give any task or obstacle my best effort,” Mullin says. “She and my dad worked long and hard to help provide the opportunity for my brothers and me to attend and graduate from college. Of course, we never considered going to college anywhere but Tech.

It was in our blood.”

Mullins says that she is very blessed to have Joyce for a mother.

“I look up to her, and I have always wanted to be just like her,” she says. “She has influenced me to try to be unselfish and to gladly make sacrifices in order to invest in others. She loves with her whole heart. She is always optimistic, grateful, happy and looking for ways to be a blessing to everyone around her.”

This consideration for others and her prior involvement with Texas Tech is exactly what caught the eyes and hearts of three women with a grand idea.

The Texas Tech High Riders student organization got its start in 1976 when three female college students saw a lack of support for women’s athletics and some men’s sports. Nancy Neill Hughes (former student) approached friends Lyn Morris Travis (BS ’78 Human Development and Family Studies) and Kathy Pate Scott (BSE ’79 Secondary Education) with an idea to start a female counterpart to Saddle Tramps.

“The first thing we did was met with Dr. (Robert) Ewalt, working in student affairs, to ask him how to go about getting an organization founded at Tech,” High Riders Co-Founder, Travis says.

They needed to have a purpose, constitution and two faculty sponsors to create a new student organization.

“We began to explore what was needed and what we could do to provide value at Tech.” Travis says. “We decided we wanted a women’s spirit organization that would serve an area that was not already being served.”

The next step of creating a student organization was to find sponsors who were willing to help this group get started and running.

“I’d been attending the 9:30 First Baptist student worship class at the time, and Joyce Arterburn was one of my teachers there,” Travis says. “I just fell in love with her. She’s the kind of person you just want to hang out with as much as possible.

“I learned so much from just watching her and how she loved, interacted and supported people. She always had a hug, always had a listening ear available, always had words of wisdom.”

“When we approached her with the idea, I could tell she got excited with us, but I remember her response being, ‘Well, I’m going to have to pray about it.’ I think that was really to go back and talk to Junior because this was a very busy woman already.”

At the time, Joyce had a family, had a career as a professor, was the student teaching adviser in her department, was involved in student ministries and was investing time in women’s athletics. Helping these students start an organization would have taken time away from her family and all of her prior engagements.

After discussing this big decision over with Junior, Joyce decided to serve as one of High Rider’s first faculty advisers along with Bill Marshall, Ph.D., a former professor of physics at Texas Tech.

“That was the beginning of an amazing relationship,” Travis says. “I attribute (High Riders’ kindness and character) to Joyce.

Joyce was everyone’s mom away from home. She just had that steadying influence.

“I learned so much from just watching her and how she loved, interacted and supported people. She always had a hug, always had a listening ear available, always had words of wisdom. She was always there to be that voice of reason for us, and I’m just so grateful that she was a part of High Riders for so many years,” Travis says while choking back her tears.

Joyce says the High Riders’ purpose is to support women’s athletics and to live their lives with honesty, integrity and servitude, as written in their constitution.

“I taught both my children and High Riders the importance of honesty and kindness,” Joyce says. “I taught them not only to love and appreciate us, but to show kindness to their professors and their family at home. They learned to serve without being paid. It’s a privilege to be a servant.”

Bill and Diane Todd (BSE ’78 Elementary Education) have served as High Rider sponsors for the last 10 or more years and have known Joyce for at least 40 years.

“Mrs. Arterburn was the reason we joined this organization,” Diane says. “I admire her enthusiasm and her love for the girls. She treats them like they’re her own daughters. She has a Christian influence and just wants the best for these girls. She’s nothing put positive.”

Current High Rider president Maritza “Molly” Ramirez, a junior political science major from San Antonio, Texas, says that Joyce is very inclusive and shares that with the organization.

“From my perspective, Mrs. Arterburn really laid the groundwork down for our organization,” Ramirez says. “We’re still doing the some of the same traditions that she started.”

Joyce clearly has a heart for people, but she also has a determination for what she is passionate about. This dedication led the High Riders organization in the creation of new Texas Tech traditions that involved females.

“The group wouldn’t be what it is now without her involvement,” current faculty adviser Stacy Stockard ’05, ’06, ’09, Masked Rider in 2004-2005 says. “Mrs. Arterburn is someone

who I think really sees the big picture of things while being able to spot individual needs as well.”

Travis says High Riders were breaking down a lot of barriers.

“We did all kinds of great things that first year,” Travis says.

“One of the thrilling things was we got to ring the Victory Bells.

This was the first time women had ever rung the Victory Bells, previously being an exclusive Saddle Tramp responsibility.”

The High Riders also get to participate as Raider Red, in homecoming events and The Carol of the Lights® – all resulting from Joyce’s influence.

“I didn’t know that my standing up for what was right, which in a way is called integrity, would be so important,” she says.

The organization has evolved through the years by introducing new traditions, new members, new cultures – but there has always been one constant.

“There’ve been cool traditions that developed within each new pledge group or each new active group that put their mark on the group,” Travis says. “Joyce is the one that kept our original identity and kept our values, standards and dreams we wanted for each new group that was coming in.

“She was a part of High Riders for so many years. I don’t know where it would’ve been if it hadn’t been for Joyce. We eventually left and graduated and the new actives took over leadership, but she was there for the next 20 years as a sponsor.”

Joyce eventually retired in 1996; however, she is still involved in the organization and the girls’ lives.

“Mrs. Art still comes over to visit the current High Riders,” Bill Todd says. “She was over at our house not too long ago. She was sitting in the chair, and all the girls were sitting on the floor around her. She was just telling them stories, and they were intensely listening. They just couldn’t believe all the different stories she had.”

High Riders isn’t something that just fades away. Once you become acquainted with the sisterhood and the purpose behind the organization, there’s a piece of your heart that is dedicated to this group.

“I’ve gotten to participate in a lot of people’s lives,” Joyce says.

“I’ve had the honor to stay connected with a lot of these women.

They take great care of me.”

Author’s Note: Anyone who knows Joyce Arterburn and has had at least one conversation with her knows that she has one of the most genuine, kind-hearted souls. Within a few short seconds of visiting with her, I realized how special and influential Joyce Arterburn is. She walked me through the halls of her home, the same home where she has lived for 62 years, most of those with her late husband – raising babies, watching grandbabies and supporting hundreds of High Riders throughout the years. From the ceiling to the carpeted floor, the hallways were completely filled with plaques and pictures that told the story of this woman and her husband. Every piece that hung on the walls symbolized the hours dedicated to their ventures and the behind-the-scenes work that is often forgotten or taken advantage of. But most of all, the framed accomplishments represent the relationships created and maintained throughout the years.

It was such an honor to meet Joyce Arterburn. Toward the end of our visit, Joyce told me, “I wish you could’ve met Junior. He was a special person.” I really do wish I had the chance to meet him before his passing, but if he shared the love of the woman I sat across from, I can only imagine how incredible he really was.

Thank you to those I interviewed for this story featuring Joyce. It’s amazing to see the passion you all share for others and the hearts you have for Joyce. It truly inspired me to be a better person and to be considerate of others, making sure to be a positive influence on anyone I meet.

This is why I strive to become a journalist in the future – to highlight the amazing people that do not always get the recognition they deserve. The Texas Tech University System Public Art Collection Since 1998, Texas Tech has been evolving into an impressive art museum of sorts. Throughout all system campuses are select pieces of art designed to enhance and complement the buildings and landscape. The Texas Tech University System Public Art collection consists of large works designed to fit with the architecture, design and/or landscape of a particular structure. They are permanent additions to the campuses.

When the program began, the Texas Tech Board of Regents mandated that one percent of the budget

for each new major capital project be set aside for an art installation. The Public Art Committee and Emily Wilkinson, director of the Public Art Program, commission each piece after careful study of the artists’ work.

The artwork that graces the Texas Tech University and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center campuses in Lubbock is inside some buildings and outside of others. Six new installations were added to the Lubbock campuses in 2019, bringing the collection to 262 total pieces. This story features the newest additions.

Artist Peter Mangan has created “Red Tail,” a 20-foot tall sculpture made of steel and fused glass. The sculpture represents a red-tailed hawk and has been placed near the new arroyo landscape at the Museum’s entry; the base of the sculpture was created to mimic the unique shape of the Museum’s building. The abstracted bird sculpture has a wingspan of 10 feet, double that of a real red tail hawk, and the colors of the interior fused glass pieces are the actual bird’s feather coloring. The 136 pieces also subtly move and shimmer, activated by the Lubbock winds. The piece is lit at night with LED lighting.

“Complete Fragment,” April 2019 James Surls, Carbondale, Colorado (American) Bronze and Stainless Steel Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, University Center “Complete Fragment,” by James Surls, consists of three bronze and stainless-steel sculptures, one 8 feet x 9 feet x 10 feet, another 9.5 feet x 8 feet x 1l feet, and the third 11 feet x 12 feet x 18 feet in size. Each sculpture represents the origin of life through the depiction of molecules, as well as growth represented by flowers. The three separate pieces are meant to create one whole piece, allowing the viewer to stand in the middle of the site and view a sculpture from any angle. Each sculpture has its own life, yet the power is that each is a part of the whole, representative of the connecting tissue of the human endeavor. These sculptures are part of a landscaped park space where visitors can sit and find calm and healing, a respite from the busy life inside the buildings. Surls is considered by many to be Texas’ greatest living sculptor.

The Texas Tech University System Public Art Program commissioned Marc Fornes/THEVERYMANY to create “Zephyr” for the Honors Residence Hall. The piece is a sculptural shade structure that is approximately 18-feet tall and 50-feet long. Marc Fornes’ work is inspired by public art as an engaging space and a place for social interaction. The artist was inspired by the potential traffic flow patterns in the space to create the initial shape. He also used the Banyan tree as inspiration; although they have a large center trunk (represented by the university), they also drop many roots that flourish (students). The piece is made of painted aluminum in varying shades of green to promote a sense of calmness in the space and to complement plantings in the area. It changes in appearance from many angles, including the views from the top floor of the dorm. Unique shapes are imbedded in the piece, which cast interesting shadows in the day.

“Pulse,” March 2019 Adam Frank, Brooklyn, New York (American) LED Display, Diffuser, Sensors, Custom Software Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, University Center Lobby The Texas Tech University System Public Art Committee has commissioned Adam Frank for the collection’s first digital artwork, “Pulse,” displayed in the lobby of the University Center. This piece is an 11-foottall, 8-foot-wide LED screen that features an accurate simulation of the human circulatory system in the visual style of an MRI. As people enter the building, the heartbeat quickens. The more building occupants, the faster the beats and the blood flow. As people leave, the heart begins to slow and eventually settles to an average sleeping rate overnight. Each member of the TTUHSC community helps drive the heartbeat equally. “Pulse” activates the lobby with an anatomically accurate MRI of the beating heart of the Health Sciences Center. This piece helps set the tone for campus visitors as an innovative and vibrant medical center.

“All the World’s a Stage,” December 2019 RDG Studio (David Dahlquist and Matt Niebuhr) Des Moines, Iowa (American) Stainless Steel Location: Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts Theatre and Dance Complex David Dahlquist and Matt Niebuhr created this sculptural installation for the Texas Tech University Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts’ Theatre and Dance Complex. The piece is reminiscent of the proscenium of a theatre stage, that will frame the entryway to the building plaza. The structure functions on many levels, as a pergola or passageway, and suggestive of a gallery or stage left/stage right on either side of the entryway. The structure creates a ceremonial experience of entering the building plaza where, for a moment, everyone is a performer on a stage. Laser-cut panels on top suggest the opening of curtains, both in the shadows they cast on the ground and from the LED lighting, which gives the piece a red glow at night. The structure is approximately 22-feet tall with each wing about 15-feet long.

Davis, White Highlight Host of Big 12 Awards for Tech TEXAS TECH HONORED WITH NINE END-OF-SEASON AWARDS BY BIG 12.

Conference announced its annual awards Dec. 3. Six Red Raiders were recognized, earning nine total awards. Kirsten Davis was voted the Offensive Player of the Year and recognized as a First Team All-Big 12 selection after leading the conference in several categories. The junior, whose First Team selection was unanimous among the Big 12 coaches, was the conference’s regular season scoring leader after racking up 15 goals through 18 games. She also had six assists for a total of 36 points — also a conference lead. This marks the third time in six years a Red Raider earned the title as the top offensive player in the conference, the other two belonging to Janine Beckie in 2014 and 2015.

2019 Soccer Team Between award selection and release time, she had already tallied another goal, this one the game-winner to send Baylor home in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship. Her 38 total points have her tied with Beckie’s 2014 season for the most in a single season in program history. Her 16 goals put her just two away from the all-time Tech scoring record of 18.

“It’s great to be recognized, but this and all of these awards are truly team awards,” Davis said. “I can’t score without the back line stopping the other team from scoring and without the midfield working the ball up to the forwards so well.”

Madison White was honored three times, the most prestigious being her recognition as Freshman of the Year. She was also voted the top goalkeeper on the All-Big 12 First Team and Freshman Team. She is the third Tech freshman to receive the

award this decade, the other two coming in 2010 (Jessica Fuston) and 2012 (Janine Beckie).

The recognition has essentially been nonstop for White, who did not even expect to step on the field during her first season in Lubbock.

It started Sept. 21 in Tampa, when starting keeper Marissa Zucchetto exited with an injury just 20 minutes into a 1-0 game against No. 22 South Florida. Stone called upon the freshman, who subbed in and proceeded to make seven incredible saves to solidify the upset. She was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week and TopDrawerSoccer.com National Player of the Week.

She was penciled into the starting lineup a week later for Tech’s Big 12 opener against No. 18 Oklahoma State, whom she shut out en route to another Freshman of the Week award.

White soon graduated to Defensive Player of the Week honors, which she would win three times after shutting out Iowa State (Oct. 3), recording clean sheets against West Virginia and Kansas (Oct. 10, 13) and leading Tech to victory over Baylor and Texas (Oct. 25, 27). The wins in Waco and Austin merited recognition by TopDrawerSoccer.com once more, this time as the goalkeeper on the National Team of the Week. By regular season’s end, White had tied the conference record for most weekly awards with five, despite only playing for six of the nine weeks.

Since the selection, White shut out Baylor in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship to lower her career-leading goalsagainst average to an outstanding 0.52 — the second lowest in school history. She owns a 0.800 save percentage, which also leads the league.

Upon learning of her awards haul, White’s comments on the honors echoed those made by Davis.

“I’m very grateful to be noticed, but it’s not possible without the entire back line,” she said. “I want to also say I’m even happier to see the entire team succeeding and being recognized.”

Joining Davis and White on the All-Big 12 First Team are Cassie Hiatt (defender) and Jordie Harr (utility). Hiatt, an AllFreshman selection last season and Preseason All-Big 12 team member this year, has played in 14 games and helped Tech to a conference-leading 10 shutouts and 0.58 GAA. Harr has been a weapon on the other end of the field. The former Big 12 All-Freshman and Preseason All-Big 12 midfielder made her anticipated return this year from an ACL injury suffered in 2018. The fall season has seen two goals from Harr in addition to two assists. The 5-foot-2 redshirt junior headed in the first goal of the season at the John Walker Soccer Complex, opening scoring in a blowout of Oral Roberts. She also had an assist that game.

Red Raiders Top Golfstat Rankings After Fall Season of four tournaments in the fall season, the Texas Tech men’s golf team has secured a No. 1 Golfstat Team Ranking going into the spring.

The Red Raiders earned tournament victories at The Carmel Cup, the Iverness Intercollegiate and won the Big 12 Match Play Tournament to highlight a fall season that took them from preseason No. 18 to the top spot in the nation for the first time in program history.

Individually, Sandy Scott won The Carmel Cup to open his senior season and would earn Big 12 Golfer of the Month for October after a top-5 showing at the Tavistock Collegiate to close out the fall campaign. A senior from Scotland, Scott also competed at The Walker Cup as a member of the Great Britain & Ireland team. He is currently ranked No. 6 in the Golfstat Player Rankings followed by junior Kyle Hogan who is at No. 7 in the rankings. Hogan closed his fall season with a third-place showing at the Tavistock Collegiate at 7-under-par to help Tech finish fourth. Andy Lopez, who won the Iverness and went 5-0 at the Big 12 Match Play, currently has a 70.74 Lopez scoring average for the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech will go into the spring season atop the rankings followed by Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, BYU and Duke. The Red Raiders maintain a 70.55 adjusted scoring average and a 90.20 relative percentage after competing in four fall events. The team is also ranked No. 3 in the Golfweek statistical ratings after going 10-1 against top-25 opponents in the fall. The Red Raiders will return to competition on Feb. 6 at the Amer Ari in Kona, Hawaii, to begin a spring season that will lead into the Big 12 Championship (April 27-29) in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The program has advanced to 18 straight NCAA tournaments.

after Homecoming, Oct. 20, the family of Tom and Nellie Langford dedicated the Friends of Tom and Nellie Langford Back Porch in the Barnhart Courtyard of the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center. The honorary back porch, extending west from the original Texas Tech University’s President’s Home, pays tribute to the positive influence of the Langfords through their affiliation with Texas Tech University, 17th & N, Memphis Avenue and Quaker Avenue Churches of Christ through more than six decades in Lubbock.

They also positively impacted countless others through their involvement in the Texas Tech University Department of English, the Graduate School, the University Women’s Club and the Christian Faculty and Staff Association.

Their influence reached generations of college students throughout Tom’s 38-year career Nellie Langford, escorted by her older son, David as a professor of English, associate dean and Langford, Ph.D., ’78, ’79, ’92, is surprised when dean of the Graduate School at Texas Tech. she arrives at the ribbon-cutting.

Although Tom passed away in 2008, he and Nellie’s influence persists. The porch ribbon-cutting and reunion of some 150 alumni and friends were a surprise to Nellie, that took place on what would have been Tom’s 89th birthday (Oct. 20, 1930). Several shared personal reflections regarding Tom and Nellie’s impact during their college years, including Jim Bullock ’97, Jane Johnson, Jim Campbell ’70, Gertrude Miller ’65 and Phil Nash ’71.

Since the dedication, several people have inquired about adding a tribute brick or paver for the porch. Anyone wishing to participate may contact Susan Bowen at Texas Tech Alumni Association at (806) 834-4954 or email susan.bowen@ttu.edu to learn more.

the afternoon of Oct. 29 a new marketing partnership with United Supermarkets that names the local grocery chain as the “Official Supermarket” of Red Raider Athletics and the Texas Tech Alumni Association.

The agreement was presented formally during a news conference at Jones AT&T Stadium that featured Texas Tech Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt, United Supermarkets CEO Robert Taylor and Barry Street, chair of the Texas Tech Alumni Association National Board of Directors.

Texas Tech and United Supermarkets have a longstanding relationship, both in academics and athletics. The West Texas-based supermarket chain is the namesake for United Supermarkets Arena, which opened in 1999.

United provided Texas Tech with a key $10 million investment that boosted fundraising efforts for the arena in 1996.

The original 20-year naming right agreement was extended by another 10 years in 2014 as part of a $9.45 million deal that now expires in 2027.

United Supermarkets has provided more than $5 million in scholarship endowments to Texas Tech University and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center that generate at least 50 scholarships each year for undergraduate and graduate students.

In the 1940 “La Ventana” is a photo of a large neon Double T sign that was a gift to the university from the Class of 1938.

In her article “Gifts from the Heart,” Texas Techsan, March/April 1999, Jean Ann Cantore writes, “The large red neon Double-T that lights up the west side of Jones AT&T Stadium was given by the Class of 1938. The sign originally stood near the center of campus.”

“I remember how thrilled we were with the Double-T,’’ recalls Maxine Fry McCullough of Midland, Texas, a 1938 graduate and the first female president of the Texas Tech Student Council. It was really different from what people usually did for class gifts.

I was always so proud of that Double-T when we came back for football games.’”

BOOKS MIKE LOONEY (BBA ’71 Marketing) Dallas, Texas, has written a novel titled “The Big Shootout: The Untold Story of the Game of a Century.” The book is based on the interviews he got from the documentary film he co-directed and coproduced, “The Big Shootout: The Life and Times of 1969.” Both the book and film highlight the legendary college football game between No. 1 ranked Texas and No. 2 ranked Arkansas played on Dec. 6, 1969. That game celebrated the 100th year of college football, the first championship game arranged for television and the last championship game played with all white participants.

Capturing the unique personalities and stories of the players, coaches and officials, Mike tells the untold story of what he considers to be the most famous college football game ever played. DONALD “DON” WRIGHT, M.D., MPH (BA Zoology) Arlington, Virginia, has been nominated by United States President Donald Trump to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the United Republic of Tanzania. Don

is a career member of the Senior Executive Service, the deputy assistant secretary for Health and director of the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

He serves as acting assistant secretary for Health and acting executive director of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition with the HHS. Don developed and implemented the National Action Plan to Reduce Healthcare Associated Infections and Healthy People 2020, the nation’s framework for disease prevention and health promotion initiatives. He served as a clinician in Texas for 17 years before joining the government as Director of the Office of Occupational Medicine at the Department of Labor.

His wife is Katherine.

1981 TRUDI L. BOYD (BA Journalism) Houston, Texas, recently accepted a new position with Noble Energy, leading their global corporate communications efforts. She brings more than 20 years of experience in public policy programming, crisis management, client counseling, grassroots and coalition management, and public affairs experience to the position. She previously served as the senior vice president and managing director of Dittus Communications, where she had worked since 1998. She led the firm’s high-profile clients in developing, coordinating and implanting award-winning campaigns. Trudi served as the communications director and later chief of staff to U.S. Rep. Larry Combest of Texas from 1985-1992. As senior political and legislative adviser and spokesperson, she was responsible for all public policy initiatives, the daily management of local and Washington, D.C., offices, and all national and district media outreach.

Trudi was named a 2009 College of Media & Communications Outstanding Alumni.

CLAUDIA MUÑOZ , a senior mathematics major, is one of only eight recipients of a $3,000 award from the Waldemar J. Trjitzinsky Memorial Fund presented by the American Mathematical Society. In addition to her interest in math, she is a national and international chess champion who has represented the United States in eight countries at top tournaments that include the World Junior Chess Championship. She is ranked as a Woman Candidate Master with a United States Chess Federation rating of 2050. (A USCF rating of 2200 is considered a Chess Master.) She is a member of the Texas Tech Chess team and president of the Knight Raiders Chess Club. She recently participated in the Math in Moscow program.

Muñoz SAMAN JAMSHIDI , an interior and environmental design gradu-

ate student has been awarded first-place in the Sherwin-Williams Student Design Challenge commercial category. Jamshidi’s design showcases a medical-surgical patient room, with the main goal of incorporating colors in a way that contributes to positive patient outcomes. With a background in architecture, he is pursuing his doctoral degree in interior and environmental design at Texas Tech.

University Financial Planning Association® team of HUNTER CODAY, DEANDRE GEELS and JUSTIN ROACH brought home a third-place finish from the 2019 Financial Planning Challenge in October in Minneapolis. Texas Tech’s Personal Financial Planning program was just named the top financial planning program in the country.

The Financial Planning Challenge was divided into phases.

For Phase 1, last spring, participating teams compiled a written financial plan for a hypothetical client without help from professionals. Phases 2 and 3 took place at the 2019 FPA Annual Conference in Minneapolis. In Phase 2, each team orally presented its case study to a panel of judges. Phase 3 was the “How Do You Know?” Challenge, a “Jeopardy”-style quiz bowl that tests teams’ financial-planning knowledge.

Only the top eight teams advanced to the national competition. As the third-place finisher, Texas Tech receives a $1,000 scholarship from the Certified Financial Planners (CFP) Board, one of the competition’s sponsors.

LINDA ROST , a doctoral student in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in the Texas Tech University College of Education, has been named Montana’s 2020 Teacher of the Year. Rost is a high school science teacher at Baker High School in Baker, Montana. She will represent Montana in the 2020 National Teacher of the Year competition.

Rost is the chair of the Baker Public Schools Professional Development Committee, which she started in 2018 to focus on STEM and Indian Education for All (IEFA) K-12 collaborations and grant projects. She serves as a teacher trainer for the Montana Partnerships with Regions for Excellence in STEM (MPRES) and the Northwest Earth and Space Sciences Pipeline (NESSP) grants. She is a three-time winner of the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium Teacher Award, a two-time Continental Cares grant recipient and the 2016 National Vernier Engineering Contest winner.

Rost facilitated a successful science research program at Carter County High School in Ekalaka, Montana, from 2007 to 2014, and she started the program in Baker in 2014. In her 12-year career in education, 22 of her students have competed at national or international science competitions.
