A Matter of Honor

I’d like to think I’ve matured a bit from my collegiate days as a Texas Tech fan, or even well into adulthood, for that matter. Many who’ve known me for a long time can attest to my excessive enthusiasm in the stands. Though never vulgar, I’ve loudly let plenty of referees, umpires, opposing players and even their fans know where my loyalties lie.

My own wife would sometimes not attend games because of embarrassment at my spirited rowdiness. Some sitting around me would express disappointment when I would calm down, saying the enthusiasm was entertaining. Others were probably grateful. But I remember wondering how much more intimidating our home field advantage would be if every fan were half as exuberant as I was.

While I exercise more restraint today on game days—age will do that—my passion for the Red Raiders persists.

unbecoming arrogance, while the opposite can create sore losers. Many fans get on the bandwagon when winning feeds self-esteem, but wagon rides can be lonely in rougher times when the most loyal among us are left holding the bag.

HONORING OUR COMPETITORS

We’ve read and heard occasionally about the obnoxious behavior of some of our fans. There’s been criticism from opposing guests, as well as from people within our own alumni base. Admittedly, there is sometimes poor sportsmanship among our own, and I believe it is a symptom of a systemic problem in our society at large.

Having been at games on many campuses, I know this concern is common among alumni colleagues throughout the country.

That said, the fact that this dilemma exists elsewhere isn’t a defense for not striving to be better—or “striving for honor,” for which we aspire. Dishonoring opposing fans suggests a lack of self-confidence. We are better than that.

Fans represent a broad base of supporters at any athletic contest. Students and alumni are those most closely affiliated with the school for which our teams play. When abhorrent behavior gets the attention it does, it doesn’t take many misbehavers to stand in the way of what we strive for. Winning can breed an

Again, fans represent the whole stadium—and beyond—and every school is vulnerable to its fringe offenders. That being written, I don’t understand some of our students who participate in a profane version of our Fight Song.

Why? By definition, profanity refers to a lack of respect for things that are held to be scared. Our culture’s resistance to profanity has eroded so much that such concerns extend well beyond any stadium. There’s less shock value in anything anyone might say anymore as we’ve become increasingly numb to cursing of any kind. I looked up the definition of “vulgar” to remind myself what it means… “lacking sophistication or good taste; unrefined.” Vulgarity in our school song is tough to hear for the many, as it seems a form of self-abuse that dishonors both our past and present. Some would argue it reflects a lack of emotional intelligence or even a level of insecurity when fans are thoughtlessly behaving like lemmings.

I asked one of our National Champion cheerleaders her thoughts on the matter. She didn’t seem overly concerned about the vulgarity, suggesting it’s something many students “have always done,” though the cheerleaders are officially required to remain on script. A slippery slope, as they say.

It’s not the majority of our fans who are the cause of the angst but rather the weakest among us who can unfairly define us. An example is the post-championship rioting behavior that took place in Lubbock, on Broadway Avenue, near campus, last April.

The fringe element, unfortunately, is an issue that every college has to cope with in these situations.

One of the things I appreciate most from the National Championship run in basketball last spring is Head Coach Chris Beard’s impact on our culture as fans. It is apparent that Beard’s focus on discipline, confidence and self-respect rubbed off on many

of us. I’m hopefully optimistic fan behavior as a whole will be better from here on out, but it’s up to our alumni.

Following the Final Four, I received this note from longtime friend Porter Garner, who leads the Association of Former Students at Texas A&M.

campus, have formed the Spirit of Raiderland Committee with the charge of enhancing the Gameday Experience. An honorable attitude toward our opponents should be part of that experience, at home or on the road.

HONORING WHO WE ARE

Howdy, Curt! I wanted to take the opportunity to commend you and the entire team of Red Raiders on the winning class and dignity displayed both on and off the court. Last night’s game was a battle of perseverance, skill, and heart to win. Texas Tech truly fought hard and did not give up with the win easily.

Competing in the NCAA Tournament is indeed a significant accomplishment, and certainly making it to the championship game is a victory to be celebrated. This represents not only talent but also dedication and determination. I hope you will accept my sincere praise for your admirable accomplishments and know that we are indeed proud of your Red Raiders!

Along with Beard, Coaches Tim Tadlock, Adrian Gregory and Wes Kittley have led us to thrilling heights, boosting our pride and confidence all the more. Winning with class will be our continual charge. And if and when we suffer defeat, we must do so with honor. I am grateful that Texas Tech Athletics, in conjunction with departmental representatives across the entire

PEOPLE TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY’S COLLEGE OF EDUCATION HAS NAMED JESSE PEREZ MENDEZ, PH.D., THE NEW DEAN OF THE COLLEGE. Mendez previously served as the dean and a professor for the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis School of Education. At IUPUI, he directed the implementation of the school’s administrative infrastructure, served the needs of research centers associated with the school and ensured the school Mendez maintained a high level of grant activity. He is a native of Wichita Falls, Texas, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Midwestern State University.

He received a master’s degree in political science from Texas Tech, a law degree from the Maurer School of Law and a doctorate in higher education and student affairs from the School of Education, both at Indiana University-Bloomington. His experience includes service as the associate dean for academic affairs and professor in the College of Education and Human Performance at the University of Florida, the head of the School of Educational Studies at the College of Education at Oklahoma State University, and a governor-appointed regent at Northern Oklahoma College, where he also served on the college’s foundation board.

TEXAS TECH ASTROPHYSICIST AND RESEARCHER ANNA MCLEOD, PH.D., IS PART OF AN INTERNATIONAL TEAM WORKING TO DETERMINE HOW STARS FORM. Scientists have shown that stars form rapidly and drive interstellar gas bubbles throughout galaxies, but one of the main unsolved problems in astrophysics is the determination of the physical mechanisms driving star formation. Lead by astrophysicist Diederik Kruijssen from Heidelberg University in Germany, McLeod and a team of scientists have now managed for the first time to reconstruct the time-evolution of interstellar clouds of gas and dust, also known as molecular clouds, and the star formation process within them. Most of the interstellar gas in not converted into stars but is dispersed by stellar feedback in the form of radiation and winds.

Their analysis shows that molecular clouds are shortlived structures undergoing rapid lifecycles and that galaxies are dynamic systems consisting of building blocks that constantly change their appearance. They concluded that stars form and destroy their parent molecular clouds very rapidly, such that gas and young stars represent distinct, subsequent phases in the lifecycle of molecular clouds.

Applying this new statistical method to observations of very distant galaxies will allow researchers to infer how stars have formed throughout the history of the universe.

JOEL PAGÁN, PH.D., HAS BEEN APPOINTED AS THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC’S ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF BANDS AND THE NEW GOIN’ BAND FROM RAIDERLAND DIRECTOR. Pagán served as an assistant to the band last fall and is part of the School of Music faculty as a visiting assistant professor of music education within the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts. More than 3,000 Texas Tech students take music courses or participate in the school’s nationally renowned ensembles within the School of Music, which is nationally and internationally recognized for its artists, educators and researchers.

The Goin’ Band is the oldest student organization at Texas Tech and has 400-plus members representing nearly every major available at Texas Tech.

JEFFERY BELNAP, PH.D., HAS BEEN APPOINTED AS DEAN OF THE TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY COSTA RICA INSTRUCTIONAL SITE. Currently the proBelnap vost and senior vice president of the American University of Afghanistan, Kabul, Belnap oversees undergraduate and graduate programs, student services, accreditations, and faculty and staff. He also assists the institution’s president in university relations with local government and U.S. government agencies, including the Department of State. He previously served as dean of the Global College at Long Island University in New York and acting dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at LIU’s Post campus. Belnap holds a bachelor’s degree in international relations and a master’s degree in comparative literature from Brigham Young University, as well as a doctorate from the University of California-Irvine in comparative literature and critical theory.

NEWS THE WHITACRE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING IS LEADING THE WAY IN INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE AT TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY. Of the 1,100 students who went abroad Summer 2019 from Texas Tech, 43.8 percent (490) are engineering students. Since 2013, the Whitacre College of Engineering International Engineering Program has sent 2,712 engineering students abroad. The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad. Through the program, administered by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Texas Tech University has been cited for increasing the number of students sent overseas and showing the greatest growth in science, technology, engineering and mathematics study-abroad scholars. Texas Tech received 24 prestigious Gilman Scholarships for 2017-2018, with half going to engineering students. For Summer 2019, Texas Tech received 17 Gilman Scholarships, with 10 going to engineering students.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY SYSTEM ACHIEVES HISTORIC SUCCESS IN THE 86TH TEXAS LEGISLATURE BY RECEIVING LEGISLATIVE SUPPORT AND STARTUP FUNDING FOR TWO NEW PROFESSIONAL DEGREE PROGRAMS. Texas Tech received $17.35 million and legislative direction to establish a School of Veterinary Medicine in Amarillo, Texas, being the first veterinary school in the state in more than 100 years. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso received $20 million to establish the Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine, serving as the first dental school in the state in 50 years. Once the institutions open, Texas Tech System will be one of nine in the country whose universities offer programs for undergraduate, medical, law, nursing, pharmacy, dental and veterinary education. Angelo State University also received funding for the second consecutive biennium supporting its academic reach and student success initiatives to continue its positive trends in retention and graduation. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center received $5 million to replace prior grant funding for a key mental health program that focuses on mental health and continued support for rural school districts.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY HOSTED SPRING COMMENCEMENT CEREMONIES MAY 17-18, ACKNOWLEDGING A TOTAL OF 4,240 UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS FOR THEIR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS. Speakers for the commencement ceremonies included alumna SUSAN GRAHAM , BARRY LOPEZ and alumnus KENT HANCE . Graham is an honored artist and has Susan Graham Barry Lopez received numerous awards including a Grammy Award, the title of Musical America’s Vocalist of the Year and an Opera News Award. Lopez is an essayist, author and short-story writer who has been published since 1966, contributing to publications in the United States and abroad. Hance, chancellor emeritus of the Texas Tech University System and former congressman, spoke at the School of Law Hooding Ceremony.

During his tenure as chancellor, the system grew to house four universities including the additions of Angelo State University and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso.

BRIEFLY The Texas Tech Office of International Affairs hosted a photography exhibit featuring “Adventures in Study Abroad & My Hometown.” The exhibit highlighted the best photographers from Texas Tech’s study abroad experiences and Texas Tech international students’ hometowns. There was a reception for the collection where Juror Robin Germany, interim director and professor of photography for the Texas Tech School of Art, delivered a gallery talk and announced the award winners.

There were 84 study abroad students who submitted 390 photos and 49 international students who submitted 202 photos. Only 70 of those 592 images were selected for the exhibit.

Texas Tech Makes Great Strides During Session

summer saw the Texas Tech University System experience tremendous growth and expansion of its reach in areas that will benefit people not only in Texas and the United States but around the world as well.

From approval of funding by the Texas Legislature for the School of Veterinary Medicine and support of Texas Tech University’s other key priorities to its continued work in the area of mental health, Texas Tech is poised for even further growth in the coming years. The vision and initiatives currently underway for Texas Tech will ensure students are receiving the best education possible while the world can look to us as the origin for research that leads to innovation that greatly improves the quality of life.

Texas Tech’s most significant recent accomplishment involved the recognition and approval by the 86th Texas Legislature to establish the School of Veterinary Medicine in Amarillo. In May, the legislature and Gov. Greg Abbott approved and signed into law $17.35 million in appropriations in the biennial state budget that will allow Texas Tech to open the first veterinary school in Texas in more than a century and the first established by a public institution in the U.S. in almost 40 years.

Because of the support of many generous alumni, donors and the Amarillo Economic Development Corporation, Texas Tech has raised more than $90 million for School of Veterinary Medicine facilities, with the groundbreaking scheduled for September.

Texas Tech’s School of Veterinary Medicine in Amarillo represents a historic opportunity to serve the needs of our state and reflects the efforts of numerous people who recognized a significant veterinary need in Texas and supported this important initiative.

The Red Raider community’s influence in this process was felt in March when officials and alumni descended on Austin for Texas Tech System Day, ensuring legislators understood the importance of all the university’s initiatives to its continued success.

“Many people played integral roles in the success of the legislative session, including our alumni, whose enthusiasm in Austin galvanized the entire Red Raider community and effectively conveyed to the state legislature the importance of our priorities,” said Lawrence Schovanec, Ph.D., Texas Tech University president. “Thanks to the combined efforts of many members of the Red Raider Family,

this session will have an historical impact on the Texas Tech University System and Texas Tech University.”

In addition to the veterinary school, the legislature also approved $20 million in funding for Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso’s Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine. It’ll be the first dental school in Texas in more than 50 years.

Texas Tech University and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center also continue to lead the way when it comes to research and treatment of mental health. The establishment of the Texas Tech Mental Health Institute brings together experts and researchers from throughout the TTU System to tackle the issues of mental health both within local communities and across the country.

TTUHSC received $5 million from the legislature for its telemedicine and wellness program, which is a leading mental health intervention initiative that supports rural school districts to prevent possible acts of violence by offering staff training and student services through telemedicine.

Once the veterinary school and dental school are opened, the Texas Tech University System would be one of only nine in the country with universities that are offering programs for undergraduate, medical, law, nursing, pharmacy, dental and veterinary education.

“This was a historic legislative session for the Texas Tech University System and its institutions,” System Chancellor and TTUHSC President Tedd L. Mitchell, M.D., said. “We take great pride in receiving legislative support to address the needs of our great state as well as providing greater access to affordable education for Texas students. I’m extremely proud of the work and collaboration that went into making this session a success and thank all who made it possible.”

Texas Tech also experienced a 5.8 percent increase in general revenue and core research funding thanks to an increase in semester instructional credit hours, a constant increase in enrollment, and Texas Tech’s continued focus on research, resulting in funding of the Texas Research Initiative Program (TRIP) that provides a match on donor contributions to research programs.

The university’s stature across the U.S. and the world continues to grow as well. In the latest Forbes Best Value rankings, Texas Tech ranks No. 72 in the nation among public institutions.

Texas Tech athletics experienced perhaps its best spring in school history in terms of success. The men’s basketball team captured the nation’s attention with its historic run to the NCAA tournament national title game, while the baseball team capped off another impressive season with its second straight trip and fourth trek in six years to the College World Series, making its deepest run yet as one of the final four teams remaining. The spring was capped off by the men’s track and field team winning the outdoor national championships—the first men’s national title in school history.

Now, as the summer winds down, excitement is turning to football and a new beginning for the Red Raiders under new head coach Matt Wells.

Whether it’s academics or athletics, research or rankings, Texas Tech’s reach continues to grow throughout the world. But it’s only the beginning.

Texas Tech has a lot to be proud of, and even more to look forward to.

Norvelle ’76 and Donna ’76 have three children: Katie Kennedy Hendley BS ’01, a neurosurgeon in Lubbock; Byron Kennedy BBA ’04, MS ’07, JD ’07, an attorney and associate vice chancellor for principal gifts for the Texas Tech University System; and Lauren Kennedy McWilliams BS ’06, a teacher. All three children married Texas Tech grads as well: Roy Hendley (BA 2000, MS 2002)’ Byron’s wife Lindsay MS 2006, Ph.D. 2018, Lauren’s husband Klay McWilliams BS 2007, BSN 2012. All together the family holds a whopping 13 degrees from Texas Tech.

Whether or not you know Norvelle Kennedy personally, you definitely know his work.

He has captured some of the most recognizable Texas Tech sports photos ever recorded.

In his 25 years of shooting for the Department of Athletics at Texas Tech, he has been present for countless ups and downs.

He has traveled with teams for entire seasons, experienced the exhilaration of winning and the heartbreak of defeat. He’s on the planes, the buses and in the locker rooms; he’s on the fields and the court and somehow manages to catch the most thrilling plays at the most thrilling moments.

“So many of our iconic moments have been captured by Norvelle,” remarks Robert Giovannetti, senior associate athletics director for the Texas Tech University Department of Athletics.

“He instinctively knows how and where to position himself and inevitably gets that perfect shot. On top of that, he is one of us.

We consider Norvelle a part of our athletic department family and appreciate his hard work and genuine personality.”

OCT. 14, 2014, LUBBOCK, TEXAS TECH VS. KANSAS: THE DAY WAS QUITE CLOUDY AND DAMP. THE SMOKE THAT WOULD SET THE STAGE FOR THE SPECTACULAR ENTRY OF THE MASKED RIDER FOLLOWED BY THE TEAM WAS JUST HANGING AND OBSCURING EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING ON THE SOUTH END OF JONES STADIUM. I SUDDENLY REALIZED THAT THE HORSE AND RIDER MIGHT DRAMATICALLY APPEAR THROUGH THE SMOKE SO FROM 125 YARDS AWAY IN THE NORTH END ZONE WITH A VERY LONG CAMERA LENS I WAITED AND HOPED FOR AN UNUSUAL IMAGE; THIS IS THE RESULT.

Norvelle’s love of sports has been life-long. He grew up in the small town of Rotan, about 60 miles northwest of Abilene.

He had an offer to play college football, but, he says, “because the place I could play football and the place that I wanted to get a degree were two different places,” he didn’t accept the offer.

He spent his first year of college at Hardin-Simmons in Abilene, then married Donna, his childhood sweetheart, who spent her freshman year at Western Texas College. The two transferred together to Texas Tech as sophomores.

Norvelle and Donna returned to Rotan post-college, where they raised three children. Norvelle spent 23 years commuting from Rotan to Abilene and working for Merrill Lynch as a financial adviser. He also officiated high school football and basketball, maintaining involvement as an avocation.

Around 1993, when Hardin Simmons was revitalizing their football program, Norvelle thought about trying out photography. The most involvement he’d had with sports photography involved Dave Campbell’s annual Texas Football Preview.

“I can remember, as a child, cutting photographs out of those magazines and making scrapbooks,” he says. “I grew up thinking that college football is the greatest spectator sport. Not just what goes on on the field, but all the things that also go around it. Spirit groups, band, cheerleaders and the fans...”

With nothing more than ambition and some new photography equipment, he approached Hardin-Simmons.

“They (Hardin-Simmons football program) didn’t have anybody doing photography,” Norvelle says. “Come to find out, I was pretty good. So I did it for them, gratis, for a couple of years.”

Fewer than two years into shooting for HardinSimmons, Norvelle approached the athletics department at Texas Tech.

“At the time, Texas Tech didn’t have a dedicated go-to photographer,” Norvelle says. “So I began working on a contractual basis in 1995.”

In 2006, Norvelle and Donna moved to Lubbock from Rotan—Norvelle had been spending so much time shooting for Texas Tech, and their three kids were all grown.

He continues to work for Merrill Lynch, but is phasing out of that career and spending more time with photography. This year he traveled with the men’s basketball team all season, from game one until the National Championship.

While he plans to continue to bring fans highlight shots from Tech sports, he has countless highlight photos he’s shot throughout the past quarter century. He has taken the time to pull some of his favorites and relate to readers some of his memories.

I bet you’ll recognize some of these images, and I know you’ll enjoy the stories behind them.

Growing our NETWORK The Texas Tech Alumni Association’s mission is to connect, inspire and love Red Raiders. In everything we do, we endeavor to follow that mission. In addition to creating this magazine, granting scholarships, offering member benefits and honoring Red Raiders through our Distinguished Alumni and Top Techsan celebrations, we have a vibrant national chapter system.

Most chapters within the Texas Tech Alumni Association’s national chapter structure have historically been tied to geographical areas. In recent years, the need for a different type of chapter arose, and the Alumni Network was created.

“Chapters are geographical, whereas networks are defined as any collection of TTU alumni who unite around a central interest, mission or background beyond class affiliation or geographical location.

Furthermore, our networks are dues based, where constituents can allocate $50 (or more) in addition to TTAA membership directly to their network,” says Curt Langford, president and CEO of the Texas Tech Alumni Association.

Alumni Networks are membership-based, volunteer-led and actively engage in communicating and/ or gathering on a regular basis to carry out their specific mission to strengthen bonds with fellow alumni and the university.

This idea began in 2000 with Raiders Rojos, a group established to unite alumni of Hispanic heritage.

Following that model, the Alumni Network has expanded to include the Military & Veterans Network (MVN), iHub Entrepreneur, Rawls Raiders, Women’s Alumni Network and Pride. Members of the TTAA can join any Alumni Network for an additional $50.

Graduates of Hispanic heritage are recognized during the annual Raiders Rojos graduation convocation held in May and December. Graduates are presented a complimentary cultural stole during the event. TTAA promotes cultural recognition by assisting Raiders Rojos with funding to have the stoles made.

High school students from Lubbock ISD enrolled in consumer science classes have been sewing the stoles for the past 19 years. The event is held at the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center.

The first thing you notice about Becky Hollands is her striking appearance. She is beautiful, poised and impeccably dressed. However, within a short time of meeting her, you realize that these qualities go much farther than skin deep. She is a talented designer, a philanthropist and a caring, giving person.

Hollands is the designer and founder of Becky Hollands Designs, her company based in Houston, Texas, that specializes in bespoke fashion. Her designs have graced Carolyn Farb, the First Lady of Philanthropy in Texas; Texas socialite Joanne King Herring; Page Parkes, founder of Page Parkes Corporation; and Y. Ping Sun, an attorney and university representative of Rice University, of which her husband is president.

“Influential and philanthropic women are my ultimate celebrities, so it’s natural for the Becky Hollands brand to feature these women who give back to our community,” Hollands says. “As a woman, I feel a duty to empower women through confidence in my designs in giving them a platform to showcase their personality and individuality.

“I’m always up for a challenge, and every individual body is different. I feel most successful when I create amazing fit and achieve balance through fabrics, colors and placement.”

She is known for her elegant dresses that flatter women and incorporate special touches that set her clothes apart from others. For example, one of her signature pieces is the Alexandra Little Black Dress, which is adorned with ostrich feathers to add interest and, as she says, “movement.” She notes that comfort is a very important aspect to clothing and no one should wear a dress that is uncomfortable.

“F

ashion is like art to me,” Carolyn Farb says. “I have donated some of my dresses to the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Stephens College and Ohio State University.

I’ve always been a fan of young designers. In addition to her interest in fashion, Becky likes to participate in things that are of interest to me such as philanthropy. She has donated many of her pieces to fundraisers that help nonprofits. She also represents a positive spirit and fearless attitude. I think her clothing designs are edgy and classy. They are innovative, wearable—today.”

Farb explains that Hollands has named one of her signature designs after her. The designer donated a “Carolyn scarf” to an event that raised money for parks for senior citizens. Farb and her longtime fellow philanthropist astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Sc.D., headed the event. When Hollands came on stage to show the scarf, she spontaneously put it around Aldrin’s neck. The crowd loved it. The scarf fetched $1,000 to go toward purchasing equipment for a park.

“I met Becky at events at the Asia Society Texas Center a few years ago,” says Y. Ping Sun, university representative at Rice University and of counsel at Yetter Coleman, L.L.P. “I was always impressed with Becky’s sense of style. It is so elegant. I got to know Becky better when she designed a long dress for me for the Tiger Ball at Asia Society Texas Center. It was a maroon dress with gold shoulder trims. I received so many compliments on that dress.

“Becky is a good listener. She listens to what her clients want. She is creative and daring! Of course, she is extremely generous. She has donated quite a number of her pieces to worthy nonprofit organizations for their auctions. Becky’s creations are always popular with event guests. We

are very lucky to have a talented and loving young designer like Becky in our community. I’m fortunate to be her friend.”

Hollands has donated her designs to many groups, including The Junior League, Asia Society, DIFFA Design Industries Foundation Fighting Aids, BBBS Big Brothers Big Sisters, Mission of Yahweh and Ronald McDonald House.

The multifaceted clothing mogul enjoys empowering both women and children. She recently has worked with a pageant for Champions Kids Camp, the mission of which is “To nurture children who have survived a traumatic injury, illness, or personal loss, such as the loss of a parent or sibling.” Girls in the program have a chance to decorate accessories for the more than 80 dresses volunteers sew for the pageant.

“The project promotes self-confidence and inner beauty,” she says.

While in college in the Texas Tech University College of Human Sciences studying apparel design and manufacturing, she received the Glenna Goodacre Scholarship for Creativity.

She also was appointed as the representative for her major to the Dean’s Leadership Council. As an alumna, she began serving on the Advisory Board for the Department of Design, something she continues to do.

She also had three minors in college–art, Portuguese and Mandarin.

“The apparel design and manufacturing major at Texas Tech really prepared me for the industry,” Hollands says.

“The major was designed so that each course was pretty much a pre-requisite for the next. Most courses were studio courses, so if I didn’t follow through, I wouldn’t last. If I didn’t complete a project, I would literally fail. One must have the discipline, commitment and dedication. I gained a strong mentality and grit to balance my timeline and complete deadlines aside from all my other commitments.”

She also maintains ties with Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, the Houston preparatory school she attended. She credits the school for helping to raise her social awareness and to learn the value of giving back to society.

The designer has received accolades for her work from around the globe. She has been featured on Houston news shows and in publications such as Vogue Taiwan, Modern Luxury, The Society Diaries Magazine, Papercity, D Magazine, The Houston Chronicle and Houstonia Magazine.

Her passion and drive also caught the attention of Page Parkes, founder of Page Parkes Corporation, a renowned modeling and acting school that is the largest of its kind in the Southwestern United States.

“I met Becky Hollands on an airplane,” Parkes says. “Yes, I was sitting next to her—I just don’t know when or where I will be inspired by a talent like Becky. I overheard Becky, at 15 years old and very well spoken, talking to her friends describing her interest in fashion design and that she only wished her parents would take her career goals seriously. Having graduated in fashion design from The American College in London years before myself, I could understand her dreams.

“Being inspired by Becky’s love of the arts and fashion, I offered to help mentor her by scheduling internships in New York and meeting with her on her brand and vision as well as introducing her to our resources in the fashion industry. I am still in awe of her ability to custom design one-of-a-kind pieces according to the events of her clients.

Becky and I have remained friends for over a decade.”

The couturier’s exquisite taste and eye for fashion can be traced back to her early childhood in Hong Kong, her parents’ homeland. Her British father and Chinese mother taught her a broad world view. The family moved to Houston when Hollands was eight years old.

“My beloved mother, whom I affectionately refer to as ‘Queen Margaret,’ is my ultimate style icon,” Hollands says. “My fascination with apparel and design developed at a young age. I credit ‘Queen Margaret’ for my love of design that developed when we used to go shopping and have high tea after she picked me up from international school in Hong Kong, “I am the youngest of my family. I grew up in a very strict and traditional household. I was always taught to do the best I could in anything I pursued, always to treat others with kindness and fairness, and most of all, that family values were of utmost importance growing up.

“My parents were open to but hesitant in the direction of my path in fashion design; however, as they saw my passion and dedication, especially in how I utilize my talents and skills to give back to the community, they were extremely encouraging. The road to becoming well-known and indemand in the fashion world has been full of interesting adventures along the way.

“My career right before building my brand and designing was in corporate fashion,” the designer says. “I gained experience in a plethora of realms such as retail, wholesale, design, merchandising, showroom sales and marketing. These experiences have made me a better designer as it guided me in knowledge of what I wanted to do as a designer.

“My career path has been well-rounded and organic. I was open to gaining experience any way I could so I did my L.A. stretch with Rachel Pally, where I received a glimpse of a small business, explored the retail world through working in specialty boutiques, worked for a New York based luxury denim company where the direction of the brand was focused on innovation in testing a niche market at a specific price point.

“I was also the director of merchandising for a renowned luxury consignment store owned by one of the members of the Bloch family. I learned that the importance and effects of psychology, presentation, placement and sales truly go hand-in-hand. I learned so much through my travels of my territory for Leon Max Inc. where I handled all the businesses and accounts within. As my numbers grew, so did my territory.

“It is truly vital to cater to a specific market, relate to what your customer needs, maintain relationships and all the meanwhile, stay true to what the brand stands for and represents. Of course, all of my past experiences have prepared me to start my own brand. As a designer, I must stay true to my brand but also be strategic in navigating my path to cater to my clientele.”

The only place for Becky Hollands Designs to go is in a positive direction. Coupled with her integrity and drive to make a difference in the world, Hollands’ creations will continue to represent social awareness and make an impact in the community through her passion for years to come.

Since 1999, members of the Texas Tech Alumni Association who attend home football games have called the Frazier Alumni Pavilion their game day “home away from home.” Red Raiders gather in the spacious building to eat, drink, mingle and watch games on big screens. While the facility already is a favorite spot for celebrating football, it’s just about to get even better.

The Texas Tech Alumni Association has expanded the 7,000-square-foot pavilion by 16,000-square feet. The newly-renovated pavilion, designed by JDMA Architects, includes an additional 4,200-square feet of open space, north and south entrance vestibules, a courtyard and a new rooftop terrace that can accommodate 200 guests.

“Frazier Alumni Pavilion is so popular that it had become too crowded,” says Chris Snead, vice president for operations for the Texas Tech Alumni Association. “The new open space in the building will allow more alumni to enjoy the Frazier comfortably with more room. The upstairs terrace is a tremendous place for pre-game events and weddings—plus, the view is spectacular.”

The existing catering kitchen has been replaced by one three-and-a-half-times its size to accommodate full food preparation. In addition, the maintenance room has been enlarged. A state-of-the-art sound system enhances audio for events. There also are more restrooms.

A new addition is the bridal suite, which is connected to a women’s restroom, with a new entrance to the suite from the south, ensuring privacy and convenience.

About 25 to 30 weddings and/or receptions take place at the pavilion each year, and these new accommodations make the venue even more appealing.

Other events regularly held in the pavilion are campus group meetings, area high school proms and school banquets. Midweek in the fall, Texas Tech students attend Raider Church there.

“Prior to the pavilion, we were repeatedly setting up a large tent on game days as part of Raider Alley, but unfortunately, it wasn’t big enough,” says Curt Langford, president and CEO of the Texas Tech Alumni Association. “Former Texas Tech Regent Jim Sowell challenged us to construct a more permanent facility to accommodate more people that would be available for private events year-round. Anyone who has been in the pavilion on game day can attest that it’s an enthusiastic and exciting place to be—where alumni meet and enjoy one another’s presence during football season.”

The expansion has encompassed the inscribed brick area to the north of the building. Engraved bricks and pavers in that space are being relocated to the area north of the new addition in spots very close to where they were in relation to the previous building. Student Alumni Board members will be on hand during game days to help people locate their newly-placed bricks and pavers.

“The total number of supporters for this project is remarkable, which goes to show how strong of a connection our alumni feel to this facility and the university as a whole,” says Nathan Nash, chair of the Frazier Alumni Pavilion expansion committee. “We are grateful to our lead donors as the project would not have gotten off the ground without them. In addition, the number of responses and smaller donations from our broader alumni base has been overwhelming.

“The scale of the new facility will not only allow for more capacity, but also for improved service, arrangements, traffic flow and other enhancements to improve the overall experience.

And of course, the rooftop terrace will offer a one-of-a-kind perspective to the stadium and tailgate scene.”

The newly-renovated pavilion will be open for the first home football game. Doors will open three hours prior to kickoff.

“While the pavilion is built with brick and mortar, it’s about family–our tribe, old and new friendships and the common bond we all have as Red Raiders,” Langford says. “The thousands of names in and around the pavilion reflect the stories of our people and their passion for Texas Tech.”

Student Project Improves Efficiency at South Plains Food Bank A group of mechanical engineering students from Texas Tech University helped the Lubbock and surrounding communities by creating a motorized conveyor belt for the South Plains Food Bank, which increased efficiency and decreased the workload of the staff and volunteers.

Texas Tech Claims National Championship

RED RAIDERS TURN IN 52-POINT SECOND DAY TO SECURE FIRST MEN’S NATIONAL TITLE IN SCHOOL HISTORY.

The Red Raider track and field team claimed the NCAA Outdoor Championship after receiving points contributions from every single student-athlete that suited up on the final day.

“I’m just so incredibly proud of these guys,” said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Wes Kittley, whose Red Raiders were ranked No. 1 all season.

“They’ve lived with a target on their backs all year long.

They just wanted to bring a championship home to Texas Tech, and I’m just so glad they have now done that.”

Tech entered tied for the national lead in track qualifications with Houston with seven. The title race was to be between the Red Raiders and cross-state Cougars, made even more exciting by the fact that the two programs would send athletes headto-head in three events.

It was here Tech did what it has been trying to do as a program for two years: bear down and suffocate the competition.

With that as the goal, Red Raider runners beat out the Cougars in all three events.

Not only did Divine Oduduru beat the Cougars in his two events—the 100m and 200m—he won them. In unbelievable fashion. Oduduru turned on the jets in the 100m, going 9.86 for his third sub-10 race of the season. Later, he did just what he did in the semifinals: go sub-20 in the 200m within an hour of going sub-10 in the 100m. In the history of track and field, such has been done 12 times, and Oduduru owns three of them.

This was all after leading the 4x100 relay to yet another school record. His squad, which was comprised of Keion Sutton, Andrew Hudson and Jacolby Shelton, went for 38.45 in one of the fastest finals in championship history. Hudson also ran in the 200m with Oduduru. The senior, running in his first career outdoor nationals final, ran a 20.25 to place seventh and score two points for Tech.

Norman Grimes Jr. ran a 48.71 in the 400m hurdles for the silver and the fifth-fastest time in the world. It was a career-best

for the sophomore and counted as the new school record – one of four set on Friday. The eight points he grabbed took two from the Cougars, whose hurdler, Amere Lattin, finished just behind Grimes in third place.

With so many points in hand from the work done on the track, it left Duke Kicinski in a position to put the meet out of reach for good. He launched a throw of 205 feet, two inches (62.53m) for the golden 10 points that clinched the first national title in school history. Kicinski is now a national champion in the discus at both the Division I and Division II level, taking the D-II crown in 2016 while at West Texas A&M. The only other thrower to be named a champion at both levels is none other than Cliff Felkins, his throws coach at Texas Tech.

Prior to Duke’s clinching discus, Jonah Koech and Vincent Crisp secured three points in the final 800m of their careers.

Koech placed seventh with a 1:47.28. Crisp earned a point with his 1:47.48. The 800m final was one of the fastest in championship history.

Odaine Lewis scored in the triple jump with a season-best mark 54-9.5 (16.70m). The senior grabbed the three points in his final collegiate meet in one of the critical events in which Tech had an athlete and Houston did not.

head coach Tim Tadlock has been named 2019 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/ Diamond Midwest Regional Coach of the Year, the organization announced.

It marks back-to-back years Tadlock has earned the accolade and the third time in his seven seasons at Tech. He also garnered the honor in 2014 and 2018. The 2019 award comes on the heels of Tech’s fourth trip to the College World Series in the last six years.

Tadlock guided the Red Raiders to a 46-20 overall record in 2019, with a 16-8 mark in Big 12 games to capture the program’s third Big 12 Championship in four years. Tech finished 7-3 in the NCAA Tournament, winning twice in Omaha to make its deepest CWS run in program history as one of the final four remaining.

Tadlock has built a program consistently elite, winning at least 45 games for the third-straight year and for the fifth time in six seasons. Tech is the only program in the country to host an NCAA Regional each of the last four seasons, one of three to earn a top-eight National Seed three of the last four years, and one of three to make it to Omaha four of the last six years.

Texas Tech baseball garnered 15 endof-year awards from the Big 12, including First Team All-Big 12 selections Josh Jung, Cameron Warren, Gabe Holt, Caleb Kilian and Taylor Floyd, while Jung was named Big 12 Co-Player of the Year and the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award winner. Jung was named a unanimous All-American, earning honors from six publications, as Warren (four) also racked up All-America accolades. Redshirt freshman Clayton Beeter and freshman starter Micah Dallas were also recognized with freshman All-America nods.

Tadlock

In the classroom, Tech had 11 Red Raiders on the Academic All-Big 12 Baseball Team, highlighted by a 4.00 grade point average from Clayton Beeter. As a team, Tech received recognition by the NCAA at the College World Series as team with the highest GPA among the eight participants. Additionally, sophomore Braxton Fulford took home the NCAA's Elite 90 award, presented to the student-athlete with the top GPA at the championship site.

Seven Red Raiders were taken in the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft with four taken in the top 10 rounds for the second straight year. Jung was selected No. 8 overall by the Texas Rangers to become the second-highest draft pick in program history.

Holt (223rd—Milwaukee Brewers), Kilian (236th—San Francisco Giants), Floyd (313th— Brewers), McMillon (322nd—Tigers), Freeman (440th—Chicago White Sox) and Warren (654th—Reds) round out the selections, giving Tadlock 48 draft picks in his seven seasons at Tech.

The regional award for Tadlock made him one of the eight nominees for the ABCA/ Diamond National Coach of the Year award, which was announced on June 27.

Tadlock and the other seven regional winners was honored on Friday, Jan. 3 in the main clinic hall prior to the start of clinics at the 76th annual ABCA Convention, which will be held Jan. 2-5, 2020, in Nashville, Tennessee.

The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its over 11,000 members represent all 50 states and 23 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, Association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA, Pacific Association Division, High School and Youth.

Perfect Game had the Red Raiders slotted fifth. This is the best collection of rankings since the 2016 club came in at No. 4 by D1Baseball.com.

BOOKS DONALD G. HUNT, M.D. (BA ’61 Chemistry) Horseshoe Bay, Texas, has written and published a historical novel titled “The Journey of Anna Eichenwald.” Donald is a retired vascular surgeon who has always had a passion for history. The book is written from the personal perspective of Anna Eichenwald, a main character in the novel and hero in the eyes of many Jews, and her experiences during WWI and WWII. Anna was the first woman to attend the University of Berlin Medical School then became an academic surgeon at the university hospital, but as a Jew, she faced discrimination and danger from the Nazi Third Reich. As danger increased, Anna changed her identity and went underground to join a resistance. Eventually betrayed and imprisoned, she entered a covert operation that interestingly was not fiction. Because she was an admired Jewish academic, she was singled out for execution, but her survival is the apogee of the novel.

Donald incorporates politics and physics during this time to create a historical piece that provides readers with a well-rounded understanding of the struggles and the triumphs encountered during this era. Donald’s wife is Delia.

ALAN J. BURTON (BA ’79 English) Durant, Oklahoma,

is the author of “Go to the Games with Humble: Kern Tips and the Golden Age of SWC Radio,” a book that chronicles the history of the Humble Oil and Refining Company’s radio broadcasts of Southwest Conference football games. The piece includes behind-the-scenes stories, rare photos, comprehensive lists of the announcers and the games they called, an actual script of a broadcast and a timeline of memorable moments. Humble, a broadcasting service originating in 1934, provided sports fans with unbiased play-by-play action of all conference teams through radio stations. Alan is currently the Special assistant to the president and director of University Communications at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, where he coordinates university news releases and publications. Alan’s wife is Michelle.

LACEY V. PRUETT (BA ’99 Journalism, English) Coppell, Texas, recently published her first novel, “High Performance Detox: Taking You Offstage for Steps Toward Wholeness,” which is written to help women identify and consider their true feelings about the roles they play and help them separate core desires from learned desires. Through the offstage journey presented in this book, Lacey challenges and encourages women to make changes and mind shifts that positively focus on health, self-care, relationships, careers, community involvement and professions. After presenting these ideas, she provides realistic and achievable ways to performing well, healthfully and fulfilled onstage. She wants to help women find and grasp their enriched passions, new purposes and increased prosperity. Lacey is a business owner, yoga teacher and past Mrs. Texas United States passionate about helping women find their higher self. She serves as a communicator, TV host, speaker and educator where she works to equip women of all ages with a healthier lifestyle and self-image. Lacey’s husband is Hugh.

Texas, has been inducted as a Texas Legal Legend by the Litigation Section of the State Bar of Texas. The Section is comprised of thousands of members from all parts of the state. They are a neutral organization comprised of plaintiff attorneys, defense attorneys, judges, mediators, arbitrators, pro bono attorneys and law students who are dedicated to improving justice systems and the quality of legal services delivered in Texas. The Texas Legal Legends is a project that was made to recognize lawyers in Texas who have dedicated their professional careers to serving others. His wife is Mary.

has again been selected by Forbes magazine as one of its Best-In-State Wealth Advisors. He is a principal of Pennington, Bass & Associates, a financial planning firm in Lubbock. The runway theme this year, titled “HOU, I love you” allowed each team to design garments inspired by iconic art collections throughout Houston. T E X A S GOV. GR E G Abbott has appointed SEAN LEWIS as the student regent for the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents for the 2019-2020 academic year. Lewis, originally from Detroit, Michigan, is pursuing a degree from Texas Tech University School of Law. He received a bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in political science from Texas Tech in May. He becomes the 14th student to serve on the Board of Regents and is the fifth student regent from Texas Tech University.

He received dean’s list status each year throughout his undergraduate education. While serving as Student Government Association Student Body President, Lewis advocated for students in both Washington, D.C., and Austin, meeting with elected officials, agencies and industry professionals regarding college affordability, diversity, health care and mental health. Lewis served as a political affairs intern at The White House in the Executive Office of the President in Washington, D.C., during the summer of 2017. He assisted the White House regional political director with outreach to influential stakeholders. He also served a one-year stint as a campaign assistant for Congressman Jodey Arrington from 2015 to 2016. He volunteered for the 19th Congressional District and served as a liaison between the Texas Tech University student body and the campaign.

Meat Science Academic Quiz Bowl Team earned the title of National Champion at the 72nd Reciprocal Meat Conference held June 23-26 in Fort Collins, Colorado. Two teams from Texas Tech went head to head in the final round of competition after eliminating 27 teams from other universities.

The 2019 Undergraduate Quiz Bowl contest, hosted by Colorado State University and the American Meat Science Association and sponsored by Hormel Foods, featured 116 undergraduates competing on 29 teams. This victory marks the ninth time Texas Tech has won the competition—other years are 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2014 and 2016.

Hand Texas Foundation has announced the second cohort of students receiving the Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers, including 28 students attending or planning to attend Texas Tech University. Of the 10 institutions with students receiving awards, Texas Tech had the most recipients. More than 370 candidates submitted a written application. The finalists participated in interviews, group activities and a demonstration teaching lesson before 134 new scholars were selected.

All scholars are committed to teaching in majority economically disadvantaged Texas public schools or in hard-to-fill subject areas. They will receive an $8,000 scholarship each year, as well as ongoing training, mentorship and networking opportunities facilitated by the foundation. The scholarship is part of the Raise Your Hand Texas Foundation’s Raising Texas Teachers initiative, a 10-year, $50 million project designed to support university-based teacher preparation programs in addressing the needs of 21st-century students.
