Dear Coach Beard, Our first university president, Paul W. Horn, Ph.D., would be proud of you, your staff and your team for what you’ve accomplished in your short time here at Texas Tech. Back in the 1920s, he charged us with the task of thinking big, and your big-thinking with the men’s basketball program has grabbed the national spotlight. In three short years, you’ve amassed 76 wins, won a total of eight NCAA tournament games achieving the Elite Eight twice, a Big 12 championship, a Final Four appearance and an oh-so-close finish in the national championship game. Yes, we ran out of time in the final, but the level of confidence and class you have carried for our university is uplifting. The “why not us” mindset has elevated Red Raider pride to an all-time high, so we’re thrilled you’re “One of Us!” This season’s success adds to an already-rich basketball tradition here at Tech. Thank you for inviting former head coach Gerald Myers to join you and the team in the net-cutting ceremony after claiming the Big 12 championship. What a wonderful tribute to a big part of our past. I was thrilled recently when Coach Myers walked into my office to introduce me to Ron Richardson, who, in 1973, helped Texas Tech win one of seven SWC championships. I don’t recall watching Richardson play, as my earliest recollections in the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum began soon after with Rick Bullock’s powerful presence in the paint. While not one of the bluebloods of college basketball, we redbloods do have our share of rafter banners touting our men’s success alongside eight Lady Raider conference championships and a national title under Head Coach Marsha Sharp.

You know this history, but for our readers’ sakes, Dell Morgan led Texas Tech to three Border Conference championships in the 1930s, as did Polk Robison in the 1950s before our first SWC title in 1960. Gene Gibson continued this success with two more titles, two from Gerald Myers and two more under James Dickey in the SWC’s final years. As a student at the time, I enjoyed the 1984 championship the most with the heroics of Bubba Jennings leading us to three wins over the SWC-favored Razorbacks.

The streamers represent a long-standing tradition called "caging the court," as they look as if they are bars caging in the court.

The memories of Tech basketball go beyond teams and titles, with the experience of the games themselves. I attended often as a child with my English-professor father, an avid fan, who wore his red tam to the games. It was a time when season tickets were difficult to come by, sometimes even willed to family members following funerals. The coliseum was the place to be, a “palace,” as described by Coach Robison when built in 1956. It’s ironic that the last scheduled event in The Bubble, the ABC Rodeo, occurred the same night we defeated Michigan State in the Final Four.

I remember when teams ran through the big signs painted by Saddle Tramps, and the lights being turned off for spotlight player intros on a red carpet. There was the big fan aimed at the American flag during the National Anthems sung by Dr. John Gillis in his red jacket—as much a part of our basketball history as our coaches. I can still hear the booming voice of Gerald Rogers announcing the games and Jack Dale on KFYO-AM during the drive home. Don’t forget all the “BEAT ‘WHOEVER’” newspapers the Lubbock A-J would distribute to read while opposing players were being introduced, and the streamer drops before those major-rival games.

These were lifelong impressions.

When Bob Knight was hired as head coach, my assignment from President David Schmidly was to interview the new coach for the Texas Techsan to tell a side of his story the media rarely told. We featured him on the cover that year, just as we have you this year. I still have the recorded conversation with “The General” as national attention was descending on Texas Tech basketball. I wrote of the irony of his being a “Red Rider” at

Orville High School in Ohio, and asked what he thought about coaching in the new United Spirit Arena on Indiana Avenue? “They can change the name of that street and it would suit me just fine,” he replied.

In a previous interview with Robison, he shared with me the earlier years of Tech basketball in the barn. He explained how he had to round up students on game days to help sweep all the hay off the court and get the animals back in their stalls. His account of how he lured Gerald Myers to Tech from the legendary Hank Iba at Oklahoma State would be a recruiting violation today. Myers would go on to become our first All SWC selection and still owns the most wins of any Tech coach in any sport with 326. And we can’t reflect on our history without referencing Tubby Smith who got us back to the tournament, helping to stabilize a struggling program just prior to your return to lead our Red Raiders.

Congrats on your Big 12 Coach of the Year and AP National Coach of the Year recognitions. While Tech competes in arguably the toughest basketball league in the country, you boldly stated during our Abilene alumni chapter event last fall that we would win the Big 12 and compete for the national championship. That’s big thinking! It was a joy to livestream our first Big 12 basketball championship celebration, as well as key moments along the

Road to the Final Four on the national stage. It’s fun to see students and younger alumni cheering on today’s championships, alongside older grads who can recall the championships of our past.

On behalf of the Texas Tech Alumni Association, thank you, Coach, for your commitment to our university, this community, your players and for doing things the right way. You have taken Texas Tech basketball to a entirely new era of success. With more banners to bear in our rafters next fall, Texas Tech’s basketball tradition is stronger than ever.

PEOPLE TEXAS TECH SCHOOL OF VETERINARY MEDICINE RECEIVED A $10 MILLION GIFT FROM AMARILLO BUSINESSMAN AND FORMER MAYOR JERRY HODGES AND HIS WIFE, MARGARET. Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec, Ph.D., Texas Tech University System Chancellor and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center President Tedd L. Mitchell, M.D., and other officials recognized the generous contribution to the vet school at the Amarillo Club on Feb. 4. The gift will support construction and development of the School of Veterinary Medicine located in Amarillo and will help revolutionize veterinary services throughout Texas’ agricultural communities. The construction of two new veterinary school buildings is expected to cost $89.82 million. More than $90 million has been raised in non-state funds for the project, and approximately $17.35 million is expected from the Texas Legislature in the 86th legislative session to help support initial operations.

TEXAS TECH RESEARCHERS ARE WORKING TO DEVELOP A UNIVERSAL FLU VACCINE THAT TARGETS PARTS OF THE VIRUS THAT DO NOT SIGNIFICANTLY CHANGE FROM STRAIN TO STRAIN. Harvinder Gill, Ph.D., the Whitacre Endowed Chair in Science and Engineering and an associate professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, and Steve Parsley, a professor and chairman of the Department of Environmental Toxicology within the College of Arts & Sciences, were awarded a five-year grant of $3.46 million from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Gill and Parsley are widely known for their work in immunotherapy and infectious diseases and are now tasked with the challenge of developing this universal vaccine that will protect against many strains with only one injection. A major benefit of this vaccine is that, unlike current vaccines, it does not require refrigeration, so it can have a longer shelf life and be more readily transported to places where refrigeration is not feasible.

THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION’S UNIVERSITY-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE RENEWAL OF EDUCATOR PREPARATION NATIONAL CENTER COALITION RECEIVED A $9.1 MILLION GRANT FOR EXPANSION. The US PREP collaborates with universities and school systems to help strengthen teacher talent pipelines and prepare educators for diverse classrooms. It prepares more than 5,000 teacher candidates each year using innovative training methods developed and used at Texas Tech. The model was developed by former College of Education Dean Scott Ridley, Ph.D., who passed away in October. The grant funding will allow the coalition to expand further than its current concentration in the Southern and Midwestern areas of the United States. US PREP was launched in 2015 and has since grown to include eight university-school partners in Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee and Texas. It will now launch a second cohort of eight partnerships in Texas, New York and California.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY HAS BEEN CLASSIFIED AS A TIER ONE INSTITUTION WITHIN THE VERY HIGH RESEARCH ACTIVITY CATEGORY OF THE CARNEGIE CLASSIFICATION OF INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION. Texas Tech is one of 120 U.S. universities and 86 public institutions listed within this category.

The Carnegie classification is a highly regarded measure of a university’s research activity and graduate programs.

Texas Tech was first named to the Highest Research Activity category in 2015, and the 2018 ranking is based on research expenditures and doctorates awarded in the fiscal year of 2017. The university has shown increases in the number of doctoral degrees awarded in each of the last seven years, including a record of 349 in 2018.

THE COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES & NATURAL RESOURCES HAS INTRODUCED A NEW AGRICULTURAL WATER MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM DEVELOPED BY THE TEXAS ALLIANCE FOR WATER CONSERVATION. The certificate program is focused on training and educating undergraduate students on the latest irrigation technologies and water management innovations. The program began in January and consists of a series of oncampus courses, totaling 15 hours, that cover aspects of water management and conservation with an emphasis on irrigation technologies. The curriculum will provide students with information related to managing water for growing crops and other plants for horticulture and turf uses. The irrigation course provides technical background on soil and plant sciences, the mechanics of irrigation equipment, use of programs to control and schedule irrigation, and exposure to economic and regulatory aspects that guide irrigation use.

A new course called the Irrigation Management Seminar will be offered every fall semester and is designed to meet the workforce needs of key stakeholders in agriculture such as producers, equipment providers, consultants and government agencies.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY HOSTED THE 2018 FALL COMMENCEMENT CEREMONIES DEC. 14 AND DEC. 15 AT THE UNITED SUPERMARKETS ARENA, AND A TOTAL OF 2,723 UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS WALKED THE STAGE. Edward E. Whitacre, Jr., a graduate of Texas Tech and former chairman and CEO of both AT&T and General Motors, served as the speaker for the ceremonies.

Whitacre earned his bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering in 1964 and is honored as the namesake for the Edward E. Whitacre, Jr., College of Engineering. He also contributed to renovations to Jones AT&T Stadium and the new Whitacre Athletic Complex.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY’S BOARD OF REGENTS HAS APPROVED THE SALE OF BEER AND WINE AT ALL ATHLETIC EVENTS, CAUSING THE PRICES OF CONCESSION STAND FOOD TO DROP. Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt presented these ideas to the regents in hopes of enhancing the overall experience for Texas Tech fans. Attendees can now purchase hot dogs and popcorn for $2 each, and water and soda for $3 each. With alcohol available to fans at sporting events, the reentry policy has adjusted. Attendees are no longer allowed to leave and return unless they purchase a new ticket. Within the Big 12, the University of Texas, West Virginia and Oklahoma State University already sell beer and wine in general admission areas. Revenues for the Tech athletic department are predicted to reach between $800,000 to $1.4 million with the introduction of alcohol at sporting events.

DHL Supply Chain North America donated 20 trees as part of its Mission 2050: Zero Emissions initiative to promote sustainability in the supply chain industry with potential new recruits. The company rewarded a student within the Supply Chain’s College Recruiting and Internship program for the Fall 2019 school year with a $2,500 scholarship in an effort to promote the supply chain industry as a career path.

Texas Tech University’s Honors College hosted a night with Sichan Siv, a former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, on Feb. 7. Siv discussed his personal journey from surviving the Killing Fields of Cambodia to growing into a diplomat and global citizen of the U.S. He focused on the horrors of genocide, the state of international affairs and the future of diplomacy. Siv migrated to the U.S. after escaping the Killing Fields in 1976 and settled in Connecticut where he earned his master’s degree from Columbia University. From 1989-1993. Siv served at the White House as Deputy Assistant to President George H. W. Bush and at the State Department as a deputy assistant secretary. He was appointed by President George W. Bush as a U.N. Ambassador in 2001 and served in this role until 2006. Siv wrote about his journey in both his internationally renowned book “Golden Bones: An Extraordinary Journey from Hell in Cambodia to a New Life in America” and his poetry book “Golden Words.”

Ground was broken on the original pavilion in 1997, and it was completed in Summer 1999. That fall, it became a popular venue for pre-game gatherings for Alumni Association members. In addition, it quickly became the preferred spot for weddings, meetings and other events.

The facility was going to be called Red Raider Plaza, but as thanks for a generous gift from 1972 Texas Tech graduate David Frazier, the Alumni Association renamed it in honor of Frazier and his late father, George.

A number of gifts followed from Red Raiders and friends. These people truly are part of the pavilion and what it represents—relationships and community.

“This is a building built on relationships,” says Chris Snead, vice president for operations for the Texas Tech Alumni Association. “For many of our alumni, it is the place to meet their friends and classmates, and that is what we want to preserve. We are making a great thing even better. The Frazier Alumni Pavilion is the nerve center of game day, and this expansion will continue to make Frazier the place to be before, during and after games.”

The expansion of the building provides yet another opportunity for people to become part of the centerpiece of gameday and location for memorable events. In essence, the pavilion is a building built by Red Raiders for Red Raiders.

“We’re obviously grateful for those who helped make the pavilion a reality,” says Curt Langford, president and CEO, Texas Tech Alumni Association.

“We couldn’t have done it without David Frazier’s early commitment to the project. As we think bigger with the expanded venue, we’re equally appreciative of those making a continued investment in this expansion. We want our alumni to share ownership in this beautiful facility.

“The pavilion we constructed was much bigger than initially conceived, but even so is too small to accommodate the number of Alumni Association members who want to be a part of the experience. This expansion will enable even more of our membership family to spend their pre-game events with fellow alumni.

“The pavilion was a first-of-its-kind facility when we constructed it 20 years ago, a major improvement from the days of rented tents, weather restraints and initial capacity concerns.”

JDMA Architects designed the original structure to maintain the continuity of the stunning Spanish Renaissance architecture found across campus. The firm has made sure that the expansion follows the same style guidelines.

New features in the updated structure include more room in the main area. A highlight is a 4,200-square-foot event area with upstairs terrace that may be accessed by stairs or elevator, north and south entrance vestibules, an expanded catering kitchen and maintenance area, an enhanced sound system and additional restrooms.

The expansion will be primarily to the north. The back patio will remain as is, as will the Masked Rider Monument by Grant Speed, due south of the facility.

SUDE MOORE STREET AND BARRY STREET

The Street family takes its Red Raider roots seriously, with 20 family members and counting who are graduates of Texas Tech.

“Neither of my parents attended college, but all five of their children did,” Barry says about himself and his four siblings, all of whom attended Tech.

“SuDe Moore Street and Barry Street have an amazing appreciation and deep devotion for their alma mater,” says Curt Langford, president and CEO of the Texas Tech Alumni Association. “They generously give not only to TTAA, but they also support scholars, athletics and many other campus programs. Barry is the current chair of our National Board of Directors and models a level of engaged leadership that inspires us all. We’re grateful for their giving spirit and authentic service in so many ways. There’s no questioning their fondness for Tech.”

Street grew up on a cotton farm in Kress, Texas, about 60 miles north of Lubbock. At a young age he began earning money to attend college through farming and raising livestock.

“I finished my degree in four years and never attended summer school,” Barry says. “Every summer and every Christmas break, I’d go home to help on the farm and earn money.”

SuDe, who grew up in Fort Worth, and Barry met while attending Texas Tech—both are members of the class of 1979. After college, the two married and moved back to Kress, where SuDe taught school until the first of their three children was born.

Barry, who owns the Street Community Gin in Kress and has built up his farming enterprises through the decades, and SuDe have enjoyed being able to give back to the university they say has given so much to their family.

Barry notes that sharing is important to him and SuDe. “It doesn’t matter how much you give, we would just love for alumni to be a part of this,” Barry says of the Frazier Alumni Pavilion expansion. “When I think about what Tech has done for our family—and they’ve likely done a lot for any alumnus—I think it’s important to give back. When the expansion is complete, the Frazier, which is in a highly visible area of campus, will be an even more amazing gathering place.”

The Streets have been members of the Texas Tech Alumni Association for 28 years. Their numerous nieces and nephews, as well as all three of the Streets’ children, Colton, Chase and CassiDe, graduated from Texas Tech.

“THERE IS A NEED FOR GROWTH AND EXPANSION ALL OVER CAMPUS. THE FRAZIER ISN’T JUST A BUILDING USED FOR SIX SATURDAYS DURING FOOTBALL SEASON; IT’S USED YEAR-ROUND BY ORGANIZATIONS ALL OVER CAMPUS.”

Growing up in Smithville, Texas, about 40 miles southeast of Austin, George McMahan chose to attend college at Texas Tech because it afforded him the opportunity to attend school far from home while remaining in Texas.

“I didn’t know much about what was then called Texas Technological College,” says George, who grew to love Texas Tech and has endeavored to support the university in any way possible.

“I wanted to major in engineering, and I didn’t want to attend school anywhere else.”

As for Linda, George’s wife, who grew up in Dimmitt, Texas, with former Chancellor Kent R. Hance, Texas Tech represented the fulfillment of a long-time dream.

“I have been a lifelong fan,” Linda says. “I always loved the idea of being a Red Raider, I thought Texas Tech was the best place ever.”

Though the McMahans—members of the class of 1966—came from different parts of the state, they opted to stay in Lubbock once they finished at Tech. George owned the Honda of Lubbock motorcycle dealership—which he sold in 1996—and is a successful real estate developer. Both Linda and George are popular local volunteers and philanthropists.

“George and Linda McMahan are two of the most thoughtful and generous people on the plant,” remarks Jim Douglass, vice president of the Texas Tech Alumni Association. “They have shared their time, talent and treasure with deserving programs and causes all over the Tech campus as well as the entire Lubbock community.

They are humble and unassuming, never seeking the limelight, as they champion many worthy causes in need of assistance.”

When the McMahans were asked to be a part of the Frazier Alumni Pavilion expansion, they were excited to be part of such an important project.

“Texas Tech is a very vibrant and growing university,” says George. “There is a need for growth and expansion all over campus. The Frazier isn’t just a building used for six Saturdays during football season; it’s used year-round by organizations all over campus.”

Linda adds, “It’s important to us that Texas Tech is able to keep up and accommodate the increasing number of students, alumni and fans. When we started here at Tech, there were about 10,000 students. Today, that number is close to 40,000.”

The avid Red Raider fans have enjoyed showing their support to many areas at Texas Tech, including scholarship endowments and support of athletic programs. They have also been loyal and valued members of the Texas Tech Alumni Association for 11 years. The couple have two grown children, Julie and Wayne, both of whom are graduates of Texas Tech.

If you were to meet James Lynch the businessman, you might never suspect he has a very wild side, in the most literal sense. Lynch possesses a staggering knowledge of global finance and business, yet he’s down to earth, highly likeable, and has a phenomenal sense of humor.

Then there’s the flip side that shows he’s led a divergent life— on the one hand he’s spent his career in the buttoned-up world of investment banking, on the other, he has completed more than 50 exciting and sometimes hair-raising expeditions across South America.

Lynch was born to and raised by American parents in Sao Paulo, Brazil, which provided him with dual American-Brazilian citizenship. His mother was from Texas, and his father was from West Virginia. His parents moved to Brazil because his father was employed by Anderson, Clayton and Co., a Houston-based cotton and coffee trading company.

“My parents moved there in 1945…they were going on a three-year contract but fell in love with the country and stayed there for 30 years,” says Lynch.

Lynch says a love of the outdoors was instilled in him by his father. Brazil, and South America as a whole, caters to an adventuresome spirit with millions of square miles of untamed jungles, beaches, mountains, deserts and wetlands. As a child, Lynch says there were frequent trips to the United States. He spent one semester of seventh grade at a school in Houston, but for the most part, his life was spent in Brazil, and he says it was idyllic.

“The house we lived in was in the city, but part of a large former coffee plantation,” Lynch says. “We had a large house with a big yard where I kept pets. I like animals. I’ve had dogs, a feline that looks like a leopard but is smaller, called a Jaguatirica in Portuguese aka Ocelot (Leopardus pardalis). I raised and raced homing pigeons, had two hawks that I trained to hunt, a monkey, snakes, turtles and birds of all different types.

“On our dirt street, there were only three houses, and the rest of the area was a very thick jungle-like environment. To our right lived an Italian family and across the street lived a Swiss family. The neighborhood was great fun for kids. We made sling shots and would have sling shot wars. We had pellet guns, too, and in hindsight it wasn’t the smartest thing we did, but we had ‘wars’ with pellet guns. We’d break up into teams and go to war in the woods.”

When it came time to attend college, Lynch’s parents urged him to matriculate in the United States. He says he wanted to choose a university in Texas. After visiting Texas Tech, The University of Texas, SMU and Texas A&M and noting that he had no preconceived notions about Texas universities, he selected Texas Tech because it was the most appealing to him.

He majored in finance and completed his degree in 1975. After Tech he got his MBA at the American Graduate School of International Management.

Lynch spent much of his career in the world of investment banking, working initially for JPMorgan Chase in New York.

He hadn’t been with the bank long when they realized he was

not only a talented young man, but also a Brazilian native who spoke Portuguese fluently. Shortly after that, JPMorgan Chase relocated him to Brazil.

“My first position, in Brazil, was as head of the Credit Training department,” he says. “Then I went to the Corporate Banking department that handled mining and metals companies, then I took over as head of the Trade Finance division.

After Trade Finance, I setup the Debt Arbitrage area, headed the Brazil Corporate Finance division, then the Corporate Restructuring division, the M&A division and finally the Private Equity investment group.”

After 20 years and eight different titles with JPMorgan Chase, Lynch left in 1996 to form his own company, Phoenix Strategic Financial Advisors. The company specializes in business and financial restructuring, mergers and acquisitions, and financial advisory. Phoenix also acts as principal and advisor in private equity investments. Although he now resides in Miami, Florida, he still makes frequent trips home to Brazil for business and to visit his son, daughter and four grandchildren.

Throughout his career, Lynch has allowed himself to break away from the structured setting of international finance with expeditions into the backlands of South America. There is hardly a region of the continent he hasn’t explored.

“South America is fantastic in terms of the variety of things that are out there to see and do,” Lynch explains. “Brazil, which occupies a major portion of South America, is bigger than the continental United States. South America is one-anda-half times the size of continental United States, so just like here, there’s a lot of diversity, everything from jungles to deserts to mountains, islands and beaches; you name it, but it’s much less densely populated.

“I was living in a place that lent itself to adventures, and my father and grandfather, who were active outdoors, introduced me to expeditions. I don’t know why adventures attract me. I just like them. I like to learn. I like to meet people from different cultures that think differently than we do and I like to sit down and get to know them. I like to explore places, it is just a part of me.”

Every expedition holds memories, good and bad, but some have more sticking power than others. Like the time he was kidnapped…

“We were seeking information about ‘The Lost City of Z,’ Lynch says of the legendary, ancient, gold-covered city believed to have once existed deep within the Amazon jungle. In 1996, Lynch took 17 people on the expedition—including his then 16-year-old son—to retrace the 1925 expedition of English explorer Col. Percy Fawcett, who disappeared in the Amazon jungle while searching for the city of gold, never to return.

Lynch earned his airplane pilot’s license in Brazil0 when he was just 17, which allowed him to serve his mandatory one-year of military service in the Air Force Reserve of Brazil. When he came to Tech, he earned his commercial and instrument ratings. At the age of 42, he earned his helicopter pilot’s license. He notes that helicopters are, “Much more fun than airplanes, much 5 more fun. You can stop in the air, you can back up in the air, you can go up, down and sideways. You can land almost anywhere you want to. The freedom that you have in a helicopter is much more than in an airplane.” He also enjoys powered paragliding.

“Our base camp was the village of the Kuikuro Indians, who were friends of mine. While we were there, another group of Indians, maybe 20 or so, entered the village, armed to the teeth with bows and arrows, guns and a weapon called a Borduna, it’s like an oversized baseball bat. They beat you over the head with it20to kill you, after breaking all the bones in your body. They came to us and said, ‘You will come with us.’ We asked, ‘Why?’ “They insisted, with no further explanation other than the point of their weapons. ‘You come with us, get your things, put them in the boats. You coming with us.’ They left no room for discussion…

“They forced us to pack up our equipment and while we were doing that at arrow point, five of our guys snuck over to a little 25 airplane that had landed nearby. They grabbed the pilot, jumped in the plane and told the pilot to take off. When he started the engine, the Indians who were rounding us up realized that people from the group were escaping. They ran to the plane just as it was lining up for takeoff. The Indians held onto the plane’s wings and the tail section. The pilot was accelerating the motor, trying to start his takeoff run on this short dirt strip, but the Indians 30 were holding on tight and the plane wasn’t moving. That bush pilot had flown a lot in the region and knew the Indians really liked candy, so he always had a big bag of candy next to his seat to give out to kids and adults as a means of maintaining a good relationship with the people from the villages.

“When he realized there were too many Indians holding onto the plane for them to be able to take off, he opened his win35 and threw the whole bag of candy out onto the ground. dow Properly enticed, a few of the Indians let go of the plane and ran to pick up the candy. That was just enough for the plane to start moving and as it picked up speed, more Indians lost their grip and let go of the plane. They took off, just missing the trees at the end of the dirt track. So five of our guys escaped the kidnapping, leaving the rest of us behind.

“The kidnappers forced us into the boats and sped downriver for a couple of hours, deeper into the jungle. We finally turned into a beautiful little tributary of the larger Xingu River. It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen in my life. Given the circumstances that we were in, being held at gun/arrow point, the fact that I can still remember the river as being one of the most beautiful places I’d ever seen, sort of gives you an idea of how beautiful it was. As we slowly moved up river, I could see colorful fish swimming in the crystal-clear water under the boat. There were turtles, birds of all colors and sizes and exuberant jungle foliage. Absolutely beautiful. We were going through hell, but in paradise…

“We finally came up to an Indian campsite, a little village, next to the river. This would be our prison for the duration; no need for doors with bars. After all, where could we go, hundreds of miles from civilization? We were really up a creek without a paddle…

“As days slowly went by, the number of Indians surrounding us increased. On the third day, there were over a hundred warriors in our camp. Indians came on foot from distant villages and argued amongst themselves in interminable, loud and angry meetings. Our fate lay in the balance. They seemed unable to reach a consensus on how to ‘dispose’ of the problem—us. They were speaking in their own language, so we didn’t know exactly what they were saying, but the tone of the discussions and the message it sent out was loud and clear, and it meant trouble for us.

“Finally, on the third day of our captivity, a group came up to us and said, ‘You entered our territory

without authorization and if you want to leave, you’re going to have to give us, as gifts, your boats, the motors, the generators, the radios and all your equipment’. I did some quick math; the sum of these so-called ‘Gifts’ amounted to over $30,000. ‘If you give us these gifts, we will let you use the radio and call an airplane to come pick you up.’

“We couldn’t understand why this was happening.

We, in fact, did have authorization from the Indian Affairs Department of the government to visit the reservation. We also had received an invitation from the Kuikuro Indians, those we were staying with when we were taken, and as a further precaution, before going in, I had spoken to five chiefs from different villages and received their authorization for us to do the research.

“We had all these approvals and were still kidnapped and held hostage by Indians from the same tribes whose chieftains had approved our entering into the reservation.

“Some years later I found out what explained this traitorous behavior; it was quite curious. In the Xingu region the chief is a person whose opinion is respected but he is not the boss like we imagine the president of a company or the president of a country to be. The chiefs do not have the last word that everybody must follow, they are not the ‘Boss.’ After listening to the chief, individuals can do anything they well please. If you think about it, it’s a perfect democracy. Each Indian has the right to his opinion, can change his mind at any time and can go out and do whatever he wants. That’s what happened in our case, we were kidnapped and held hostage by a group of young Indian louts that wanted our nice new equipment. The ‘no approval to enter the reservation’ argument was just a way to justify their actions and force us to ‘give’ them the equipment as a gift. The ‘gift’ twist they invented was a creative way to shield themselves from being called thieves.”

Succumbing to the threats of physical violence and bloodshed, Lynch and the remaining men “gifted” the Indians the $30,000 worth of equipment they were going to use for their research on the expedition.

Ultimately, they were allowed to leave, and the agreement was that they could keep their four trucks that were parked outside of the reservation, on a ranch that was the group’s staging area for the expedition.

Once Lynch’s group arrived back at the ranch, the ranch hands told them the Indians had broken into their cars and had taken them on to the reservation.

Just inside the reservation and across the river from their village, the Indians parked the trucks, deflated the tires and took the batteries out of the vehicles.

“There was no way we were going to leave the trucks with the Indians.

But how could we get them back without an all-out violent confrontation?

“After a long night of going over alternatives we decided to get hand pumps and batteries in the nearest town and wait. The following night we drove to the ranch and got there at 4:00 in the morning, when everybody was sleeping. The Indians were tucked away in their hammocks across the river. After determining that no one was watching, we quietly took the pumps and batteries to the trucks and began the tiring work of filling empty tires with hand pumps. We then proceeded to put the batteries in the trucks. All went well until the battery cables were attached in the fourth truck…which had a piercing alarm installed. The lights started flashing, the horn blowing, and all hell broke loose. Obviously, the Indians woke up, and they started shooting at us from across the river. We jumped in the three cars that were ready and took off dodging bullets.

“After a bumpy three-hour drive back to town on a rugged dirt trail, exhausted, we checked into a small hotel and slept. Later that morning, we were awakened by a member of the group saying there were Indians outside the hotel demanding we give them back ‘their trucks!’”

The disagreement between Lynch’s group and the Indians rapidly escalated, and the armed local ranchers, who dislike the Indians, joined in. It was the makings of a perfect storm…

Lynch spoke to the pilot who had rescued the five members of the group at the Kuikuro village and asked him to immediately fly to the village where the most respected chief of the reservation lived and bring him to town.

When the chief arrived and was told what was happening, he had what Lynch calls a “vicious argument” with the outlaw Indians, in their native language. Finally, the chief determined Lynch’s group could keep their cars and recover the fourth vehicle still back at the reservation. He personally accompanied the group back to the reservation, had another heated conversation with the Indians who wanted to keep the truck, and “liberated” the last truck.

Lynch concludes that there are good people and bad people everywhere, but mostly good people. He has “You have to respect them,” says Lynch of continued visiting the Kuikuro encountering snakes on his expeditions. and is now an “uncle” and a “I’ve been bitten four or five times by snakes but it’s because I like to pick them up and “grandfather” to some of the play with them. I know which ones aren’t kids born to the tribe. venomous, so I’ll play with those. Some of them don’t like that and get upset and bite. I’ve never been bitten by a snake that attacked me.”

Another of Lynch’s fascinating expeditions included spending time in 2017 with a tribe of cannibals. After reading a great amount—and learning that since the Jesuits left their mark on the Amazon decades ago, there are no known practicing cannibal tribes today. Curious to understand the mind of cannibals, Lynch put out feelers to see if he could locate and visit a tribe that might still have old timers who had lived as cannibals.

“Through my network of Indian friends, I was able to contact the grandson of 315 320 a chieftain of the Rikbaktsa, an indigenous group from the Mato Grosso region of Brazil.” says Lynch, who notes that this tribe had not been contacted by white people until 1957. “They were the largest tribe in the region—about 5,000 people—all cannibals. I convinced the grandson to take me to meet his grandfather. I flew from Sao Paulo to the airport closest to the village. We then traveled three days in a small motor boat, down river to this very isolated area in the jungle.”

Lynch says he spent two weeks with the tribe and was able to satisfy his curiosity 0 about the tribe’s past in discussions with the old chieftain and his wife.

“They’re fascinating people, and actually very gentle and kind, nothing like the vicious people I imagined who ate other humans,” he notes. “After a few days getting acquainted and comfortable with each other, I asked the old chief why they ever ate people. He explained that in their area of the jungle there are not many animals and 5 the river is so shallow that the fishing is poor. I concluded that eating other humans became their source of animal protein. The old man also pointed out that if they reproduced strictly with women from their tribe, the resulting children came out ‘strange.’

In order to prevent this, they would raid neighboring villages and take women in order to have kids with them—a solution to the genetic problem caused by inbreeding! He went on to tell me that since the men 10 and boys were of no use to them and might attempt to retaliate, they ate them. Simple.”

While on the surface that seems stunning and savage, Lynch notes that the Rikbaktsa were doing what they had to in order to survive. Cannibalism was their solution to a nutritional and a genetic problem, one 15 of the realities of the vast, harsh Brazil is the world’s fifth-largest country in land mass and Amazon jungle. comprises the largest portion of the South American continent.

The Amazon Basin—a whopping 2.72 million square miles—is home to the largest rainforest in the world, encompassing about 2.1 million square miles of the total 2.7 million. The majority—about 60 percent—lies within Brazil’s borders, but it stretches into Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela.

The Amazon Basin receives about seven-and-a-half feet of rain a year, with areas in the northwest region receiving up to 20 feet.

The Amazon River is almost 4,000 miles long, with more than 1,100 tributaries feeding it along its winding path. The river flows east 25 into the Atlantic Ocean.

The Amazon Basin is incredibly biodiverse, hosting more than 40,000 plant species, 5,600 fish species, 1,300 bird species, more than 430 mammals and more than 400 reptile species.

The Amazon Basin is not the only amazing region in Brazil…visitors also flock to the Pantanal. Located in the southwest region of Brazil, The Pantanal is the world’s largest wetland, covering 75,000 30 square miles. The majority of the Pantanal region lies in Brazil, but it also extends into the countries of Paraguay and Bolivia.

The Pantanal receives between 40 and 51 inches of rain a year. It maintains its wetland status due to the many rivers that flow through the region, then overflow during the rainy season.

The Pantanal boasts more than 3,500 plant species, 650 bird species, 236 different mammal species, around 90 reptile species and more than 300 species of fish.

Lynch and his friend Rene once viewed a documentary about a group from the Smithsonian Institution that traveled to a 17,000-foot high peak in Peru and reached what they determined was the source of the Amazon River. “Watching the documentary, we learned that nobody had ever reached the source of the Amazon in vehicles,” says Lynch. “People had tried, but never succeeded. Rene said, ‘Hey, there’s a project for us. Let’s be the first people to arrive at the source of the Amazon River in vehicles.’

Lynch and Rene hired an experienced guide who’d been to the source of the Amazon River on foot. When he was told Lynch and Rene wanted to reach the source in their off-road trucks the guide informed Lynch they’d never make it. “We went out and actually blazed a trail,” remarked Lynch. ‘We were able to get there and our guide, who’s an experienced mountain climber, laughed and said, ‘I never believed you guys would be able to do it. I never believed anybody could do it, but you proved me wrong.’

For us it was worth the effort. The source of the Amazon River is quite incredible.

It’s a rock face which accumulated snow up above on a plateau. As the snow melts it seeps down through cracks in the rock and shoots out horizontally at the base.

(See below.) That was an exhilarating experience and we can now say we had been to the source and mouth of the longest and biggest river in the world. That’s the way some of these expeditions turn out.”

In addition to the mystique surrounding the Amazon Basin, South America is home to many other fascinating ecologically diverse regions, one of which is the Pantanal, the world’s largest wetland. This is one of Lynch’s favorite playgrounds.

“I’ve been there seven or eight times,” says Lynch of the Pantanal. “It’s immense. It can take three days to drive across it in off-road vehicles, so it’s really big. The Pantanal is rich in its variety of wildlife. You have hundreds of types of fish, caiman alligators, mammals, reptiles and birds. It’s beautiful…

“One thing we like to do there is fish. If you know where to fish, you can catch dozens of piranha. They are easy to catch.

All you need is a bit of meat on your hook and you’re pulling them out of the water left and right.

“Fried or made into a soup, piranha are very tasty. Just don’t go swimming where they live. They are usually only dangerous when they’re stuck in ponds. During the wet season, the water level comes up in the rivers and floods this whole region. Water gets to be up to six feet deep in places. Then in the dry season, the water level will drop, and ponds are formed, very large ponds and the fish get stuck in them. The piranhas start eating all the other fish and when the other fish are eaten up, they start eating each other. That’s when it’s dangerous. If you accidently end up in one of these ponds, you are a goner.”

Lynch’s extensive travel and adventures caught the eye of the Travel Channel. He was contacted about creating a documentary that might unravel some of the mysteries of the Amazon. The show, “Lost Amazon: Project Z,” was filmed in December 2017 and aired on the Travel Channel in October 2018. Lynch, along with his longtime friend and fellow explorer Rene Delmotte and a field scientist traveled to Peru to film the show.

“We went to shoot the program in the northern part of Peru, near the border with Ecuador, on the eastern side of the Andes Mountains. You’re high up, but it’s still jungle, it’s part of the greater Amazon region.

“We all flew in from different places. The directors and show participants hailed from New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sao Paulo and Miami,” where Lynch now resides.

“We met up in Lima, Peru and then drove to the Chachapoyas region of northern Peru. Everything that we shot was outdoors, nothing in-studio. We sort of had a plan, no scripts or anything, so it’s not like a movie or a reality show where everything’s scripted. We were just being ourselves, having fun, getting into trouble and discovering new stuff. We usually had three cameras filming us. We discovered a large city lost deep in the jungle, which had never been reported on or studied. We know it is very large because we mapped it using LiDAR on a drone and have a 3D map of the location.”

The show was well-received, and Lynch is awaiting word on whether the Travel Channel will request subsequent shows.

He is still running his business, Phoenix Strategic Financial Advisors, and always making plans for new expeditions. His next goal involves searching Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for evidence of an ancient shipwreck.

“I hope to solve a 40-year-old mystery,” says Lynch. “In 1975 a fisherman found some amphora jars on the bottom of Guanabara Bay. Amphora were used in ancient times as containers for wine, olives, grains, oil and water. If these are authentic, they would be out of place based on history as we know it. If they are authentic and had been underwater for hundreds of years, it would mean Romans or other ancient people came to the New World long before Columbus…”

Lynch hopes to further explore the area in Guanabara Bay using side-scan sonar and sub-bottom profilers, which won’t disturb the floor of the bay, but will hopefully show signs of the remains of a shipwreck. He has petitioned and awaits authorization from the Brazilian Navy for permission to carry out the research.

If Lynch is authorized to explore the bay, it will be another in a long line of 50-plus memorable expeditions—and this one may turn the history of the New World on its ear.

Regardless of whether he explores the depths of Guanabara Bay, for the ever-intrepid Lynch, there is always another adventure waiting in the wilds of South America.

Red Raider Camp is a three-day summer event available to incoming freshmen and transfer students entering Texas Tech University. Students have the opportunity to learn the history and traditions of Tech while meeting other students before classes start in August.

The first Red Raider Camp was held in Junction, Texas, in 2001. After Tech administration saw the impact camp made on the students who attended, they merged the New Student Orientation program with RRC to create Red Raider Orientation in 2009. Administration wanted every student to experience camp and saw this as a way to accommodate each student entering Tech.

There was no need for Red Raider Camp with Red Raider Orientation because it combined components of both the camp and orientation in one event. However, there were legislative changes in 2014 that resulted in the restructuring of orientation. Many of the fun, social, historical and traditional aspects of camp were lost when orientation guidelines increased the amount of academic activities required during orientation.

Camp was reestablished in 2014 and has been steadily increasing in attendance each year, impacting more than 800 students in 2018.

Stefan Altheide, Texas Tech’s Transition & Engagement staff member in charge of Red Raider Camp, works solely with Red Raider Camp—planning for the event, hiring the counselors and training the leaders. He says there are four things that the RRC team hopes to accomplish.

“First, we really just want to integrate students into the university,” Altheide says. “We’re introducing campers to the current students who are working Red Raider Camp, giving them an idea of what it is to be a true Red Raider and providing an example of what it is to be a college student.

“We’re introducing them to this culture of Texas Tech, luckily before they even get here, so they’re familiar with it and comfortable in this environment. When they arrive, it’s one less thing they have to worry about adjusting to.”

The second goal of Red Raider Camp is to teach students about the rich history and traditions of Tech.

“A lot of what we do is tell what it means to be a true Red Raider, but a part of that is understanding what Texas Tech is, how we got started and why we do the things that we do,” Altheide says. “History is such an important part of our culture here at Texas Tech, and I think being successful and feeling connected to the university comes through understanding the rich university culture of where we come.

“We do a lot of things at camp that only happen at Red Raider Camp, so there’s kind of an exclusiveness for the students that attend,” he says. “If you go to camp, you get to hear more than just what the victory bells are or more than who the Masked Rider is and why they are our official mascot. You get a little inside knowledge of the history behind it all.”

Red Raider Camp strives to promote academics and challenges students to push themselves to achieve success both inside and outside of the classroom.

“The third goal is to help students succeed academically at Tech,” Altheide says. “While we don’t have a huge academic focus at camp because orientation is mostly academic focused, we’re still getting students in the mindset of graduating and being successful academically.

“Setting up those relationships, friendships and networks is going to help them succeed in the classroom because they’re going to know what resources are available to them, and they’re going to know people they can reach out to that have gone through these things before. And so, it’s enabling them and setting them up with the tools that they need to be successful.”

The fourth goal of camp is to prepare incoming freshman to be the next generation of student leaders on campus, which in turn, leads them to become leaders within their communities and organizations after college.

Teaching students about the richness of Texas Tech could lead to the involvement in Texas Tech Alumni Association in years to come.

“Another goal is leadership development,” Altheide says. “We want these students to leave and be the next generation of student leaders on campus, whether that’s for camp or for orientation or whatever student organizations they go out and join.”

Since 2014, RRC has been hosted at the A&M AgriLife Extension Service’s Texas 4-H Conference Center in Brownwood, Texas. The facility was built to host leadership development and team building events year-round for youth and adults.

“Junction had changed a lot between 2009 and 2014, and it wasn’t quite fitting the needs of what they saw for the future of camp,” Altheide says.

“The 4-H Conference Center facility just works really well the way it’s set up for logistics and schedule of camp, but what we really like about it is that it’s in Brownwood, Texas. It’s really centrally located to where all of our students are coming from.”

Brownwood is three hours from the Metroplex, two hours from Austin and San Antonio, and four to five hours from Houston, making it convenient for the students who normally have a long drive to Lubbock.

“One thing that’s pretty unique about camp is that we ask our students to provide their own transportation to Brownwood,” Altheide says. “It’s a lot more efficient for them just to meet us where camp takes place instead of having to come to Lubbock a second time after orientation.”

Mark Carroll, a 1994 graduate of Tech with a bachelor of science in agricultural communications, is the current director of the 4-H conference center.

He leads programs year-round and oversees about 10,000 participants that engage in their programs each year.

“To me, Red Raider Camp is an extension of our youth development, which is where young people become young leaders,” Carroll says. “It’s one of our favorite programs we put on each year because the Red Raider Camp team, overall, brings a positive attitude to the facility. It’s a good program for both of us, so we help each other.”

“Red Raider Camp has impacted me as an individual by giving me that little boost of confidence towards wanting to be more than just another college student attending one of the largest universities.

I gained that drive of wanting to be more and play those leadership roles that help make Texas Tech so welcoming. Red Raider Camp has been so beneficial for me and multiple others. I wish it was a mandatory program like orientation. This program, to me, is the No. 1 most vital program at Texas Tech.”

Mark Carroll and his wife, Kristie, from Bangs, Texas, have a set of twins–Luke and Lauren. Luke is a freshman at Texas Tech, and Lauren is a freshman at West Texas A&M. Luke attended Red Raider Camp in the summer of 2018. Carroll describes the impact camp made on Luke and how the event sparked his excitement in going to college.

“It was great to see Luke engage with the new students,” Carroll says. “He was completely over the moon excited about going to Tech after going to Red Raider Camp. It’s a great way to introduce them to Red Raider Land.

“I think Red Raider Camp impacts students in that it shows them what a positive educational opportunity Texas Tech University provides and gives them a great introduction to Red Raider traditions,” he says. “It also teaches them that there’s a great big world out there; this is just the beginning.”

Carroll says that he loves being involved in the program.

“As a Red Raider, it makes me feel good that I can be a small part of the thousands of students that go to Red Raider Land as freshman each year,” he says. “I never dreamed that I would have the opportunity to be a part of the program. Being a camp director was never on my radar, but things happen for a reason.”

At Red Raider Camp, the main focus is preparing future Red Raiders for their college careers, but there is also a desire to hire and develop well-rounded leaders that act as role models for the students attending.

There is a Red Team, made up of student leaders who oversee camp as a whole and hire counselors. The counselors lead color teams—blue, orange, purple, green and yellow—that

divide campers into smaller groups. The small groups allow students to interact on a smaller scale and gives them a team for competitions during camp.

Rylee Randolph, a senior multidisciplinary studies major with a focus in special education, has been involved in Red Raider Camp on many different levels. She was a camper in 2015, a color team counselor in 2016 and a Red Team member from 20172018. As a member of the Red Team, Randolph was responsible for interviewing and hiring counselors, training the leaders and creating the camp curriculum.

“I went to camp and just really liked it,” she says. “I fell in love with the program and the people. I just totally bought in once I was a counselor that first year of camp, and I was just all about it.

“After seeing what all I got from the program as a freshman, I knew that I could make a big difference and touch a lot of people in some way, shape or form with hundreds of students coming in for multiple camps.”

When asked what she liked most about Red Raider Camp and the people involved, Randolph’s passion for this organization radiated.

“I was also involved in orientation for a long time,” she says, “and one thing that’s different between the two or any other program I’ve been around, is that Red Raider Camp leaders really turn into family. You really learn to one, trust each other—that everyone’s going to do their job correctly—and two, rely on each other’s strengths.

“It’s something I’ve never seen,” Randolph says. “The closeness of the staff team is the most unique thing about this program.”

One of Randolph’s main responsibilities while she was on the Red Team was hiring camp counselors.

“When hiring staff, I look for someone who is personable and real,” Randolph says. “You never know where these kids are coming from, so the leaders need to be relatable and genuine.

Personally, I look for someone who is proud of what they’ve done but also has a lot of humility and can be relatable to kids coming through the program.”

Altheide, director, also works with the Red Team to hire students for leadership roles within camp.

“There really isn’t one student that fits the mold,” he says. “What we really like to look for is students who have a passion for the university. They need to understand our history, culture and traditions.

We want to make sure they’ve had a great experience and loved their experience at Texas Tech so they can share that with these students. Beyond that, we just want to make sure that they have a willingness to learn and a willingness to grow.

“The reason I love my job so much is getting to see the staff develop over time,” Altheide says. “It’s really rewarding to me because I can see that whole process. That’s really why I like to dive into and invest in my students to make sure they’re having a great experience.”

When the color teams break into their small groups for discussion, counselors talk about everything Texas Tech—from what gamedays are like, to what resources are available to students, to some of the dangers correlated with college.

“Camp Times are unique,” Randolph says. “These topics might shock some of them and might not affect some of them, but I know, no matter what, it’s something I feel is ok for a future college kid to hear and a tool that I would want every person that comes through Red Raider Camp to have in their pocket at the university. We want them to understand the resources they have when they get to college and the choices they can make.”

Randolph says that the most vital part of Red Raider Camp is the connections students make with their college peers.

“There’s so much more that can stem from those relationships,” she says. “I know a lot of kids that have never been to Lubbock, Texas, before. Many of these kids come from big cities like Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas or Fort Worth and have never been in this small West Texas town where the wind blows.

“They get to step on campus and know people, which is such a unique feeling because the comfort level is so much higher just seeing familiar faces. We want those kids to be comfortable and ready to rock.”

Altheide says that the most rewarding experience is when students go to camp reserved or don’t want to be there realize what a great opportunity Red Raider Camp was for them.

“By day three, they’re all in, they love camp, they don’t want to leave, they can’t wait to get to Texas Tech,” he says. “I think that shows the impact and success of what the camp does. It really does get these students ready to be at Texas Tech. It gets them excited to be a college student and gives them a connection to the university, which helps them feel proud of what they’re doing.”

RENEWABLE ENERGY Green Power is Now

I

n her 1925 novel “The Wind,” author Dorothy Scarborough writes of a young woman in 1880s Texas, near Sweetwater, who is driven crazy by the incessant gusts that surround her. The book was published anonymously at first because the writer feared a huge outcry against her implied criticism of the new frontier. It remains a classic novel today—and that West Texas wind is now big, big business. The man responsible for putting Texas on the “wind” map is Texas Tech graduate John B. Billingsley.

Billingsley, a native of O’Donnell, Texas, is founder, chairman and CEO of two powerhouse companies that are leading the way in clean and economical energy—Tri Global Energy, founded in 2009, and Sunfinity Renewable Energy, founded in 2016.

If you have driven along the highway and seen wind turbines, those towering giants slowly churning in the breeze, you know what Tri Global Energy does. The company develops and owns wind projects in West Texas, Nebraska and Illinois.

Billingsley was motivated to start in the renewable energy business because of his experience growing up in West Texas. He still owns the family cotton farm south of Lubbock and noted the wind turbines going up in the area. But when a developer approached him about leasing the land for a wind farm, Billingsley found that the contract wasn’t exactly farmer-friendly, with the developer reaping most of the benefits. His own experience has made him empathetic to farmers who face numerous challenges, from drought and bad weather to fluctuating crop prices, so he set out to craft a more equitable business model.

Through Billingsley’s trademarked Wind Force Plan, Tri Global Energy allows direct equity participation in the projects from area landowners and community members. The business model also leverages Tri Global Energy support to incorporate a local partner to manage and drive the project to commercial success. The landowners aren’t the only ones to benefit, as Tri Global directly drives jobs and tens of millions of tax dollars to small West Texas towns.

“West Texas leads the nation in both renewable and fossil production and continues to broaden and diversify our energy production, supporting our nation’s energy independence for future generations,” says U.S. Congressman Jodey Arrington (R-TX 19th District). “John’s leadership has played a major role in the success that continues to set our region apart in Texas and the U.S.” Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, Tri Global Energy today is responsible for approximately 50 percent of all wind projects under construction in Texas and ranks fourth among the top five developers nationally. Billingsley describes himself as a “serial entrepreneur”—a trait that was evident early on. When he was a fourth grader, Billingsley entered a 4-H essay contest about why he wanted to be a farmer. Billingsley’s paper won the contest, and he was awarded a show pig by Sears & Roebuck Co. In return for the pig, Billingsley was required to care for it, keep notes about its care and to have it bred. Sears & Roebuck had the pick of the litter. Billingsley continued to breed and sell show stock, making about $3,000 each year. The experience proved his aptitude for business and started him on the path of becoming an entrepreneur.

“During conversation at the event, John’s chief communications and marketing officer, Susie Lomelino, learned of the Home Utility Management System headed by Drs. Brian Ancell and Carol Lindquist, and expressed interest in supporting the solar panel and wind tower components of the project.

“After the event, John sent a note indicating how much he and his wife, Harriett, enjoyed the evening and re-affirming his offer of support to the College.

I subsequently contacted him on behalf of the HUMS team, with the result that his two companies, Sunfinity Renewable Energy and Tri Global Energy, have provided equipment and installation for these two components of the HUMS house, currently located at Tech’s Junction Field Site. We have subsequently met when I visited him in Dallas.

“As with many entrepreneurs, John has a longterm vision of, and passion for, the potential of the endeavor–in this case renewable energy–that he is pursuing. As with successful entrepreneurs, he has brought innovation to the field which has made his start-up ventures successful. In addition, he is willing to surround himself with people who are the best at what they do.”

Renewable energy is here to stay, according to Billingsley. “Wind and solar production are the future, and the future is here,” he says. “Illustrations and projections show wind and solar could double over the next 10-15 years. Gas-fired generators are still going to be dominant, but wind and solar will be the vast majority of new installations.”

Leading the War Against Germs

Growing up in West Texas, Robert P. Webb, Ph.D., could never have imagined that his curiosity about all living creatures would lead him become a senior researcher at the United States Army’s premiere biodefense research laboratory. A native of Ottumwa, Iowa, he was four when his family relocated to Lubbock.

“I loved anything to do with animals,” Webb says. “I enjoyed being outdoors. I was always going into streams, flipping over rocks, sticking my hand in holes to see what lived there.”

Webb was the youngest of four children—he has two brothers and a sister. His family also owned a cattle ranch near Post, where they spent a lot of time in nature.

That love of living things grew as Webb did. His parents, James and Roberta, encouraged education. He enjoyed his science and biology classes at Evans Junior High and Monterey High School in Lubbock. Although as a teenager, he really wasn’t sure what kind of career he wanted, he knew it would involve living organisms. His father was a psychiatrist, so the medical field appealed to him. He decided to major in biology.

He attended the University of Texas his freshman year and then took time off to work in Austin. Genetic engineering was just coming onto the scene in the early 1980s, and it caught Webb’s interest. The idea of modifying living organisms to benefit people appealed to him. He realized he needed a college degree and decided to return to Lubbock and enroll at Texas Tech University.

In college, Webb graduated from simply catching frogs and rodents to knowing exactly what makes them tick. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Texas Tech University in 1989. While in graduate school, he and his advisers realized that his research in plant and molecular biology was substantive enough to fulfill requirements to earn a doctorate. He completed a doctoral degree in molecular biology from Texas Tech in 1995.

“If I remember correctly, Bob came to my lab after starting an M.S. program with another professor who was nearing retirement, says Randy D. Allen, Ph.D., professor and Sitlington Endowed Chair, Institute for Agricultural Biosciences at Oklahoma State University. “I was an assistant professor, just starting my career and absolutely gung ho about molecular biology research. Bob caught the research fever and never let go. From a scientific perspective, he is probably the most successful of the 20 Ph.D. students that graduated from my lab while I worked at Texas Tech.”

Webb’s graduate school research involved the design and production of transgenic plants overexpressing antioxidative enzymes. The goal of the research was to produce agriculturally relevant plants with the ability to thrive under harsh environmental conditions.

“At the time, my career goal was to work at the USDA Plant Stress Research lab that was being built in Lubbock,” he says. “However, then I read an ad in Science magazine for a postdoctoral position with the United States Department of Agriculture and decided to look into it.”

He answered the ad and was offered the job. In 1998, he began a postdoctoral program at the USDA Appalachian Fruit Research Station in the rolling hills of Kearneysville, West Virginia. He conducted research on the overwintering response in fruit trees. Unusually cold and long winters may impact yield, having an impact on producers and consumers alike. Webb was able to help identify and clone a key protein in peach trees that could be enhanced to help them to overcome the weather.

As his postdoctoral program was nearing the end in 1998, Webb spotted a “vague” ad in the Washington Post for a molecular biologist who had experience in DNA sequencing.

“I applied, not knowing what to expect,” he says.

“The company conducting the search called and gave me directions to the place for the interview. It was Fort Detrick in Frederick, Maryland. The position was for a molecular biologist with the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases.

“I was escorted to a conference room and sat with Dr. Leonard Smith, who became my friend and mentor. He hired me on the spot.”

One of Webb’s first jobs was to modify plants to develop vaccines for soldiers. The research involved producing anthrax and plague vaccine proteins in transgenic tobacco and tomato plants. He then moved on to master production, purification and analysis of relevant vaccine and therapeutic proteins in yeast production platforms.

“USAMRIID’s mission is very straightforward; we make vaccines and therapeutic products for warfighters,” he explains. “We want to protect them—they can have the best body armor and equipment, but the Department of Defense also wants to provide them with protection against biological threat agents.

“Most of the vaccines developed at USAMRIID are naturally-occurring pathogens and toxins, such as the causative agents of Ebola, anthrax, plague, ricin and botulism. Soldiers could potentially come into contact with these agents in a battlefield scenario or by natural exposure in endemic areas.”

Kijek, recently retired director for the Division of Molecular and Translational Sciences, USAMRIID. “In addition to his stature in the research community, Bob is also one of the most professional and collaborative scientists I have had the pleasure of working with during my 25 years of federal service. His willingness to partner with others, mentor young scientists and lend his expertise to anyone who asks is unparalleled. He is truly an exemplar of what a scientist should be.”

When not working, Webb and his wife, Jackie Bennett Webb, spend time together and enjoy traveling and renovating their old farmhouse in Smithsburg, Maryland. They are the parents of three boys, Joshua, who is married to Kayla Long Webb; William and Joseph.

Like her husband, Jackie grew up in Lubbock and attended Evans Junior High and graduated from Monterey High School. She earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in interior design in 1984 and a master of visual and performing arts specializing in art education in 1990 from Texas Tech. She currently works as a recruiter for the boutique executive search firm Summit Talent Group.

Although Robert and Jackie knew each other growing up and had many mutual friends, it wasn’t until Robert returned to Lubbock from Austin that sparks flew between them. They married in 1986.

Just as the world is ever-changing, so are the organisms that inhabit it.

There is always something new to explore in the biological sciences.

“Between working with absolutely fantastic people and my passion for molecular biology, I will never tire of what I do,” Webb says.

It doesn’t sound as if his views will change anytime soon.

tive duties but also made a point to work in the lab whenever he could. He was determined to stay current on new technology. He is the chief of toxinology in the Division of Bacteriology at USAMRIID. “When Bob was a graduate student at Texas Tech in the Department of Biological Sciences, I had the opportunity to interact with him in the classroom and also by serving as a member of his dissertation committee,” says Michael San Francisco, Ph.D., professor and dean of the Honors College at Texas Tech University. “Bob has always been an intelligent and engaging person. His ability to be a strong analytical thinker and an effective communicator made him stand out in the classroom and in his research. His quick wit and outgoing personality made for many wonderful moments, and I thoroughly enjoyed interacting with him in class–—and even outside the classroom.

“Bob’s ideas, vision and ability to step outside his ‘comfort zones’ led him to his current work at USAMRIID. To be in a leadership role in this highpowered environment with national security implications is a testament to Bob’s intellectual, interactive and leadership skills.”

As chief, Webb manages the botulinum and ricin toxin vaccine and therapeutics programs and serves as the chair of the Institutional Biosafety Committee.

“It’s important to be prepared, should the need arise,” he explains. “Our challenge is to stay ahead of naturally-occurring threats, emerging new pathogens and engineered threats.”

Webb notes that USAMRIID is now working on a third-generation vaccine for botulism. They design medical countermeasures and continue to test and improve them.

The best part of his job, he says, is “the people—the overworked, underpaid, passionate professionals on our team.” He says that they are all working to protect U.S. troops, here and abroad, as well as citizens.

In addition, for 15 years, he has been an adjunct faculty member at Johns Hopkins University Graduate School, where he teaches courses in cell and molecular biology and bacterial pathogenesis. Webb also serves on the scientific advisory boards of four local colleges and universities.

he Texas Tech University System Day at the State Capitol was held March 4-5, 2019. Alumni and university supporters traveled across Texas and the U.S. to join Chancellor Tedd L. Mitchell, M.D., and the university in Austin to support legislative priorities this session. A record-setting crowd joined the Monday night welcome reception with guest appearances from Texas Tech’s Raider Red and Angelo State’s Roscoe the Ram. Raider Red Meats at Texas Tech University and Angelo State University’s The Meat Market catered the event with featured meats from the two meat labs within the system.

Red Raiders and Rams joined forces at the Texas Supreme Court to hear the latest update on the Austin priorities for the session. The Masked Rider and Fearless Champion also joined alumni and friends for a picture in front of the Texas Capitol. Members of the Texas House and Senate recognized the universities within the Texas Tech University System in their respective chambers. Lastly, the attendees met with staff to deliver custom gift boxes featuring meats from Raider Red Meats and The Meat Market along with information on the number of alumni, friends and supporters in their districts.

Texas Tech Men’s Basketball Makes History Playing in National Championship

The landscape of college basketball in this country has changed.

Permanently and irrevocably.

Little did anyone know that Chris Beard’s return to campus as the head coach of the Texas Tech University men’s basketball team three years ago would have this kind of effect, and certainly not this quickly. There’s no denying it now. And Monday’s appearance in the NCAA championship game against Virginia sent a signal to the rest of the college basketball world.

This isn’t a flash in the pan. Texas Tech is here to stay.

Led by hometown hero Jarrett Culver, a pair of senior transfers looking for one last shot at a playoff berth and the hardest working coach in the country, a group of hard-nosed, determined, underrated players epitomized what the university is all about – From Here, It’s Possible.

The Red Raiders fought to the very end – and then some – forcing No. 1-seed Virginia to overtime before falling to the Cavaliers, 85-77, in the championship game of the NCAA tournament Monday night at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Texas Tech was the first Big 12 Conference team since Kansas in 2012 to appear in the national championship game and the first Big 12 team from the State of Texas, setting a new school record for victories in a season along the way.

Texas Tech (31-7) was seeking to become just the second team from the state to win college basketball’s ultimate prize. The last time it happened, Texas Western changed basketball forever in 1966, winning the title with an all-African-American starting lineup.

Fifty-three years later, Texas Tech has put the focus of college basketball in the state back in West Texas.

Together with reserves Deshawn Corprew, a transfer from nearby South Plains College, and fourstar recruit Kyler Edwards from Arlington, the Red Raiders quickly developed a chemistry that proved to be crucial to their success.

Texas Tech’s historic run began with a complete retooling of a team that lost five seniors and a firstround NBA draftee from a 2017-18 team that itself made history with the school’s first appearance in the men’s Elite Eight round of the tournament. With those losses, not many gave the Red Raiders much thought entering 2018-19, picking them to finish seventh in the Big 12.

But no one knew what Beard and his charges knew. No one knew the character in that locker room. No one knew what Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt knew when he hired Beard in 2016.

The Red Raiders won their first 11 games, then after a nine-point loss to No. 2 Duke and AP Player of the Year Zion Williamson, Texas Tech opened Big 12 play with four straight wins.

But it was a late-season surge – nine straight wins to close out the regular season and claim a share of the Big 12 crown – that helped the Red Raiders capture their first men’s Big 12 basketball title, and Texas Tech built much-needed momentum heading into the NCAA Tournament. Despite a first-round loss to West Virginia in the Big 12 Championships, Texas Tech began to make people stand up and take notice going into the postseason.

That’s when the rest of the world got a first-hand look at the Red Raiders’ signature stifling defense. After dispatching Northern Kentucky, Texas Tech shut down a Buffalo team averaging almost 90 points per game, holding them to just 58 in a win that sent the Red Raiders to the Sweet 16.

In Anaheim, Texas Tech and Michigan matched up in a clash of two of the best defenses in the country, with the Red Raiders thwarting the Wolverines to make a return trip to the Elite Eight. Then, facing a high-powered offense in No. 1-seed Gonzaga, Texas Tech’s defense again came up huge, limiting the Bulldogs to 69 points, just the fourth time all season they’d scored fewer than 70 points.

Upon hitting Minneapolis, Minnesota, site of the Final Four, the doubters still did not give Texas Tech a chance, this time against Michigan State and future Hall of Fame coach Tom Izzo.

But, once again, Texas Tech proved the doubters wrong, shutting down Cassius Winston and the Spartans, 61-51, to reach the title game for the first time in school history.

On Monday, Texas Tech ensured that the epicenter of college basketball in Texas now resides in the Hub City.

Red Raiders Repeat as Big 12 Champions

MEN POST MOST DOMINANT VICTORY IN CONFERENCE HISTORY, WOMEN TIE TOP FINISH IN PROGRAM HISTORY.

The Big 12 Indoor Championships' first-ever trip through Lubbock ushered in world-leading times, broken records and the most dominant victory in the history of the conference.

Divine Oduduru led the way for a Texas Tech men's team that scored 179 points – a full 25 points more than has ever been scored in the conference meet. The men's runner-up, Iowa State, tallied 109 points, making it the largest margin of victory in the 22-year history of the conference's indoor meet.

Oduduru began his Saturday by running a 6.52 to win the 60m. The Nigerian was just the first Red Raider to cross in the race, as Andrew Hudson followed Oduduru with a 6.57 to grab eight points.

Derrius Rodgers secured five more with a fourthplace 6.66.

But Oduduru was not close to finished. After his career-best 60m time, he turned around and ran a 20.08 in the 200m – the fastest indoor time in the world and second-fastest in the history of collegiate track. Oduduru's mark broke just about every record it could, counting as the best time ever run at a Big 12 Championship, Texas Tech and the Sports Performance Center. His 20 points from winning the 60m and 200m made him the co-high points leader on the men's side.

The junior was followed by Hudson, who again supplemented Oduduru's 10 points with eight more for the Red Raiders. He came through with a 20.55.

Rodgers again followed the two with a fourth-place finish, this time turning in a 21.03 to add on 23 more points.

With 23-point hauls in both the 60m and 200m, the Red Raiders added still another 23 in the triple jump by placing four jumpers in the top-five. Jah-Nhai Perinchief led the way with a second-place 54'-11.5" (16.75m). Tech owned the next three places, beginning with a bronze-medal performance from Odaine Lewis and his 53'-10.25" (16.41m). Charles Brown (fourth) and Jequan Hogan (fifth) rounded out the big points grab as the Red Raiders made it clear they were not interested in allowing it to be a close race for the men's title.

Perinchief had more in his tank, too. After taking silver in the triple, he went on to do the same in the high jump. Perinchief and Kansas State's Tejaswin Shankar traded clearances all the way up to 7'5.75"(2.28m) – personal bests for both of them. They each fouled out at 7'-7" (2.31m), and it was Shankar that took the title with fewer misses.

Axel Hubert brought home the first indoor title in the hep in program history, tallying 5,678 points. The freshman from France, who already holds ownership of the program record in the event, secured the win despite eight of 10 competitors posting career-best scores.

Tech also picked up a conference title in the 1,000m thanks to Jonah Koech. In his Big 12 debut, the UTEP transfer ran a career-best 2:23.75 for the 10 points. Though he missed out on a title, Vincent Crisp picked up five more points for the middle distance crew with a 1:08.52 in an incredibly fast 600-yard final. Five more points also came by way of Tyreek Mathis, whose 46.60 landed him in fourth place in the 400m. Mathis then helped the 4x400m team to a 3:14.95 to tack on three more points to the blowout.

Zarriea Willis led a women's team that scored the second-most points in program history at 108.5 as they finished in second in the team standings.

Her contribution came in the high jump, as she PR'd at 6'-0.75" (1.85m) to pick up her second Big 12 title in three years. The senior was joined in scoring by Cyre Virgo, who went 5'-9.25" (1.76m).

In the triple, Chinne Okoronkwo secured third place – and six points – for Tech with a jump of 42'-9.75" (13.05m). The jump placed her eighth in program history. Combined with points from her pole vault win and sixthplace finish in the long jump, Okoronkwo racked up 19 points in her Big 12s debut – the second-most of any female competitor. Chelsey Cole and Brianna Johnson also scored, taking sixth and seventh, respectively.

Also participating in the historic effort for the women's team was Sara Limp, who pushed herself to a near-PR 52.60 in the 400m to grab eight points. Fellow sprinter D'Jenne Egharevba also hauled in eight points in the 200m, running a personal-best 23.22 for the silver. Egharevba also scored in the 60m, taking seventh with a 7.42. The 600-yard brought six more Tech points courtesy of Lexye Price (fifth place) and Damajahnee Birch (seventh), who both fought through Friday's prelims to score in their Big 12 Championships debuts.

In a longer race, Nokuthula Dlamini PR'd for the second day in a row after running a 2:51.35 in the 1,000m. The junior squeezed her way into the finals after placing eighth in the prelim to earn an at-large spot.

DEAR LOYAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION MEMBERS: Last year was the end of an era with the resignation of our longtime leader, Dr. Bill Dean, who served the Texas Tech Alumni Association for 40 years. Bill’s leadership was celebrated by the Texas Tech community during our Matador Evening at Homecoming and has been recognized nationally by his colleagues throughout the alumni profession. We are forever grateful for his longtime service and commitment to TTAA. In 2018, the TTAA broke ground on a $6 million Building on Tradition Capital Campaign to expand the Frazier Alumni Pavilion. The much-needed expansion is scheduled to be completed for the 2019 football season. If you haven’t already contributed to this campaign, you can still make your mark on this gameday gathering place for alumni.

Speaking of making a mark, we continue to promote our new mark for the TTAA featuring the iconic Double T, a nationally known collegiate symbol. For Texas Tech alumni, the logo emphasizes our lifelong connection with the university as we bear our banners far and wide. You’re part of our TTU family. You’re One of Us! Association membership reached an all-time high during 2018 with more than 30,000 members. Because of you and others, we were able to fund $358,446.77 in scholarships, award three $10,000 Excellence Grants and provide much-needed support for the highly successful Raider Roadshows throughout the state in partnership with Undergraduate Admissions. This is but a glimpse of the service and support we currently provide, but we strive to achieve more.

In addition to our student membership program, we continue to emphasize TTAA membership with recent grads and young alumni. The Texas Tech University Office of the President invests in a one-year membership for every graduate, a group we’re focused on for sustained growth. We appreciate President Lawrence Schovanec’s investment in the TTAA. The Official Texas Tech University Ring tradition continues to thrive as one of the top ring programs in the country with a record 2,105 rings presented in 2018. More than 80 percent of our ring recipients participated in one of eight Official Class Ring ceremonies (fall and spring) at the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center. A portion of ring revenue is reinvested into Texas Tech University First Generation Scholarships as well as a TTAA membership for each ring recipient.

The Legacy Program embarked on its ninth year in 2018 with a total of 7,814 legacies. The program engages alumni by providing their children and grandchildren with an affiliation to Texas Tech at an early age. We will be enhancing this program dramatically in the coming years with an exciting opportunity that we believe will be well received.

Your continued support is vital for our go-forward growth and service to the school we love so dearly. MARY LOU CRUMP KOEHLER (BS ’53 Home Economics

Education) Portland, Oregon, has published her second book “I Could See Nothing: Settling West Texas” that unravels the narative told by her father, Bob Crump, about the family’s journey of moving to Lubbock from Henrietta, Texas. The Crump family was one of the first to establish a homestead in Lubbock County on the High Plains in 1890. Bob’s sisters, Mamie Crump (BA ’28 Education) and Katie “Kit” Crump (MED ’39 Education), both play a role in the story. After Mary Lou graduated from Tech, she served as the Home Economic Director for the Honolulu Gas Company in Hawaii. She was chosen by McCall’s Magazine as one of five to receive the American Gas Association Home Service Achievement Award. Mary Lou made her home in Portland and has since written a cookbook titled “Son-of-a-Gun to Sukiyaki” and become a member of the Western Writers of America organization. Her husband is David.

1953 HOLLIS O. DAVIS (BS Chemistry) Trophy

Club, Texas, served as a plenary speaker for the 43rd Annual Conference on Composites, Materials and Structure on Jan. 28 in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The conference was hosted by the United States Advanced Ceramics Association, a premier association committed to promoting the use of advanced ceramics as the foundation for a new generation of high-efficiency and high-performance products. Hollis, a composite materials engineer, spoke at this conference in 2004. His wife is Pansy.

1967 DAVID L. NELSON (BBA Accounting)

Houston, Texas, had an article published in Texas Monthly about his long-time friend and Marine Corps hero, LEE ROY HERRON (BA Political Science) formerly of Lubbock, who was killed in action during the Vietnam War. The story “On the Marine Corps’ Birthday, Honoring Lubbock’s Lee Roy Herron, an Ordinary Miracle” celebrates and highlights the life of Lee Roy while describing their friendship. David describes the many sacrifices Lee Roy made for his country and the passion he had for serving in the U.S. Marine Corps.

David’s wife is MARTIE S. NELSON (BSE ’97 History, English).

1971 C. KEN FERGESON (BBA Management, MS

Agricultural Economics) Altus, Oklahoma, has been inducted into the first Oklahoma

Bankers Hall of Fame. He has served as the chairman of NBC Oklahoma, a $730 million state bank, since 1985. Under his leadership, the bank has grown to include several communities in Oklahoma. He has also served as chairman of both the American Bankers Association and the Oklahoma Bankers Association and has advocated for banks both at the state and national levels. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 2009. His wife is Mary Ann.

1973 ROBERT “BOB” E. DAVIS (BSE Education)

Dallas, Texas, turned a 20-year career with a Fortune 500 company into a successful business consulting company. Surge has helped hundreds of companies and individual executives move to greater profitability and career growth. Bob has led sales teams both nationally and internationally within Surge, and serves as a partner in PDG Properties, focusing on residential improvement and upscale. He has spoken on numerous business and Christian radiobroadcasts and has published three books – “Ever Forward with Jesus: A Daily Walk with Christ,” “Making That Successful Career Move: A Practical Guide to Advancing Your Career,” and “Ever Forward with Jesus II: A Continued Daily Walk with Christ.” His wife is DEBRA L. DAVIS (BSE ’76 Elementary Education).

Lubbock, are celebrating the 90th anniversary of their family business, Scoggin Dickey Chevrolet, Buick, Subaru. The fourth generation involved in the business includes son DAVID L. ZWIACHER (BBA ’05 Finance/Real Estate) and daughter JACLYN “JACKIE” A. ODOM (MS ’07 Restaurant, Hotel & Institution Management), both residents of Lubbock. Ann’s grandfather and his brother-in-law started the business with just a few cars in front of a grocery store in Floydada, Texas, then moved it to Lubbock in 1929. David’s wife is EMILY J. ZWIACHER (BS ’07 Multidisciplinary Studies), and Jackie’s husband is Sammy.

1976 JEFF A. KLOTZMAN (BA Journalism, MA ’00 Mass Communications) Lubbock, was named the new executive director of communications and community relations at Lubbock Independent School District. Jeff served at Ramar Communications as news director and anchor for FOX34 prior to his new position. He has been in the news business since 1983 and is an active volunteer in the Lubbock community. His wife is KIM K. KLOTZMAN (BBA ’77 Marketing).

1989 OLIVIER A. GIROD, PH.D. (MSIE Industrial

Engineering) Arlington, Virginia, was inducted into the Industrial and Systems Engineering Academy of Distinguished Alumni at Virginia Tech, where he received his doctorate degree in 1996. He currently serves as a senior officer at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C. His wife is Brenda.

1990 JAMES E. “JIMMY” GIBSON, III (BS Civil Engineering) Highland Village, Texas, has joined Freese and Nichols, Inc. to lead the firm’s Environmental Services Practice.

Freese and Nichols, Inc. is a professional consulting firm that designs and manages infrastructure projects with an emphasis on sustainability. He brings 27 years of industry experience and 18 years of management experience to the firm, where he has lead teams of professional engineers, geologists, scientists and technicians ranging from 50 to more than 800 employees to develop environmental solutions for some of the most difficult environmental projects in Texas and across the country.

Upcoming Innovation Hub Events TTU Accelerator Program Deadline: May 3, 2019

One of the first tenants at the Texas Tech Innovation Hub at Research Park has been acquired by a leading mobility industry company, located in North Carolina.

Parking management technology company NuPark was sold to Passport, Inc. in October 2018, just five years after commercialization and three years after moving into office space at the Innovation Hub. NuPark co-founder Ron Frick said the Hub has been much more than just the place of business for NuPark. “I think community is a key word when you talk about the Hub. You have a sense of community and that feeling like somebody is there if you need them. It definitely feels like home.”

Frick said it’s fitting for a Texas Tech facility to be NuPark’s home. The company’s back story has several tieins to the university. As Tech’s enrollment was steadily increasing, the parking services department was looking to be more efficient with the same number of staff. After an exhaustive search, a gap in technology was apparent.

That’s when Frick was hired by IT Manager, Stephen Lambert. The two started with ambitious plans to replace the current system and layer in new technology, with the hope of starting a company if the software proved successful. Their task was to build and implement a license plate recognition-based software platform that would meet the Tech community’s specific needs. “We found out firsthand and fast what worked,” Frick said. We’d put something out, get feedback, and do that again and again.” Once Tech’s testing of their new software was done, Frick and Lambert turned to another parking management professional, Kevin Uhlenhaker. Frick says, “We realized the niche was there: to not only improve on what is out there, but to make it fit the needs of specific clients,” Frick said. “We had been told if we could commercialize this, Tech would sign a license agreement. All that happened. Kevin found an investor who gave us money. We formed the company in 2013 with Kevin as CEO.” The men continued to work in their Texas Tech jobs as the company sought out clients. Florida International University signed the first contract with NuPark. Baylor University soon followed. NuPark kept adding universities to its client list. “It was still a bit of a risk to finally say ‘I think this thing is really going somewhere’ and quit our other jobs,” Frick said. “By 2015, it was time to take that risk.”

The growing company needed workspace for its now full-time staff. Frick said the supportive environment at the Innovation Hub stood out. “Everyone here shares that common startup mentality and the excitement around starting something that wasn’t there before. I think it’s just phenomenal Tech realizes that and is making sure the excitement is shared and fostered.” Tech is building a community of seed funding and mentorship to encourage entrepreneurs. Frick said, “I’m completely thankful to be part of that. And I want to continue to be in any way possible.”

Frick said Passport, Inc. provided the best possible scenario for NuPark’s exit. He said at the time, Passport had about 160 employees and through the sale acquired all 40 of NuPark’s employees, and they continue to grow. “What they do really well for cities, we didn’t do. What we do for universities and with license plate recognition, they didn’t do so well,” Frick said. Passport estimates 1 in 3 vehicles in the U.S., or 80 million vehicles, pass through the combined system network. Acquiring NuPark gives Passport exclusive technology that allows it to grow and accelerate its market.

Frick adds, “We’re going to take everything that we’ve learned in the last five years, apply that into Passport’s acceleration, and what we’re going to build next is just going to be even better.”

Several other Texas Tech students were recognized for their achievements.

Students from universities in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas shared their talents in acting, design, directing, playwriting, musical theatre, devised theatre, dramaturgy, journalism/advocacy, and arts leadership.

In addition to the many award-winners, several students from Texas Tech will travel all over the country to advance their studies.

BRITTANY NEILSON , a graduate student in the Department of Psychological Sciences was awarded Student Member with Honors by the Human Factors & Ergonomics Society (HFES), which recognizes students who have made an outstanding contribution to the field of human factors and HFES during their tenure as a student. Neilson was also awarded a Graduate Student Research Support Award by the Graduate School.

MAGGIE ELLIOT , a graduate student in the

Department of Agricultural Education & Communications, has been chosen as one of 20 student delegates to the Consortium for Advanced Bioeconomy Leadership Education. CABLE is a nationwide organization of 20 universities led by Ohio State University and supported by the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

She will participate in a year-long program that fosters leadership development within the bioeconomy. Her experience will enable her to educate people about using plant-derived resources as opposed to non-renewable items.
