Back to Basics—Our Beautiful Campus and Beyond Having worked in the private sector for 18 years before rejoining Texas Tech Alumni Association, I had many opportunities to visit and consult with university leaders throughout the country. As much as I enjoyed traveling and experiencing so many campuses, every journey helped me appreciate my alma mater and personal history at Texas Tech all the more. I was often asked by friends and colleagues, “What’s the best-looking campus you’ve ever been to?” While every institution is attractive in its own way, the spaciousness and continuity of our Spanish Renaissance architecture sets Texas Tech apart in layout and beauty.

Our campus architecture, so tradition tells, was chosen because of the Spanish cultural background of the Southwest and a similarity between the geography of the Llano Estacado and Central Spain. Campus planner William Ward Watkin had a vast view for the university to be—a vision that is increasingly realized and more fully revered every day.

Novelist James Michener wrote that our campus was among the most beautiful in the country.

MSNBC editors once chose Tech as its prettiest campus in a survey, ahead of University of Virginia, Notre Dame and University of Alabama.

Pictures provide but a glimpse of Texas Tech’s glory, as only those who’ve been here can comprehend it. I recently had the chance to give a tour to a few out-of-town business executives who were first-timers to campus. They repeatedly remarked on the consistency of the buildings and the wide-open spaces. They were particularly intrigued by the fact that the distance between the Textile Engineering Building and the Administration Building lacked one-quarter of an inch from being one-quarter of a mile. That was a long trek, especially in the winter, for our earliest students to get from one class to the next in the school’s formative years.

The grandeur of today’s campus is a big part of our identity and the deep pride we share in this institution. While we may have studied various disciplines, in different buildings and at different times, we’ve all walked the same paths amidst the red-tiled roofs, arches and iconic towers that unite us. Whether surrounded by lantanas in the summer, bright chrysanthemums in the fall, blanketed in snow in the winter or covered in lights during the holidays, the campus evokes a strong 6

emotional attachment to Tech. Biologically, its aesthetics appeal to the limbic part of our brains, which is incapable of language, but responsible for emotions such as nostalgia, loyalty, commitment or even belonging. It’s what motivational writer Simon Sinek refers to as the “why,” a deeper meaning that we “believe in” or are “connected to” that inspires us. I’m increasingly grateful for our campus fathers with the foresight to not only think big, but also to think beautiful.

Sinek’s book “Start with Why” was the focus of our Alumni Association team retreat in early January, where we circled up to hone in on the why vs. the whats and the hows of our daily work.

It’s not that the latter two are unimportant, as they’re critical components to overall operations. But the why is what motivates, as Sinek repeatedly points out people don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.

As with any alumni association, our charge is to grow in service and support of our alma mater. While our membership number is respectable when benchmarked with comparable organizations, we want to encourage even more alumni to belong to the organization.

However, we want to emphasize the benefits of belonging to TTAA vs. the benefits of just joining this vital organization. There is a subtle difference between belonging and joining. To “join” is often a transactional process, with an incentive to receive something in return, such as this magazine you are reading. However, the desire to belong seems to be a higher calling to be on board helping to provide the critical support our university needs. As we strive to better amplify our why, we seek to connect with even more alumni who want to be a part of something they believe in that is bigger than themselves.

This belonging is rooted in campus memories, friendships made, educational experiences, personal achievements and, of course, pride in the institution.

We deeply appreciate your being a part of Texas Tech Alumni Association, especially those of you who have maintained your membership for many years. As I now review and sign individual thank you notes with giving histories listed, I’m humbled by the number of members who are steadfast in their contributions, many with 10 to 50 years of consecutive giving. Some are in rarer air, having achieved 60 and even up to 75 consecutive years of having belonged to the association since 1948! As much as we laud our longstanding loyalists, we’re also grateful for our younger alumni who are blazing their own loyalty trails, alongside those who contribute if and when they can.

Our impact as an association is only as strong as the combined commitment of our alumni. Whether at our Young Alumni, Century or highest level of membership, we will be more intentional on our organization’s why to inspire more alumni to believe and belong, enabling us to achieve even more for the most beautiful university in the land.

The Pig Roast celebrated scholarship donors, recipients and intercollegiate judging teams. In addition, the program honored three leaders with the Gerald W. Thomas Outstanding Agriculturalist Awards. The 2018 recipients were Ron Craft for Agribusiness, Jodey Arrington for Public Service, and Shawn Holladay for Agricultural Production.

CRAFT is a cotton producer and fifth-generation ginner. He owns New-Tex Gin Company in Plains and is co-owner of Lov-Cot Warehouse in Lubbock. He was elected chairman of the National Cotton Council (2018), and is active in many state and national farm and gin organizations. Over the years he has held numerous other NCC leadership positions, including director, chairman of the packaging and distribution committee, and member of the Executive Committee, Cotton Flow Committee, and Quality Task Force. ARRINGTON is a Plainview native and currently serves as U.S. Representative for Texas’s 19th congressional district. In congress he has been an advocate for promoting agriculture and energy, strengthening national security, and respecting the U.S. Constitution. After graduating from Texas Tech, Arrington worked for Gov. George W. Bush in Austin, and was later selected by President Bush to join the White House as a senior adviser before being appointed as chief of staff to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. In 2007, he returned to West Texas where he was Vice Chancellor of Research and Commercialization in the Texas Tech University System before being named president of a Lubbock healthcare innovation company. HOLLADAY is a fourth-generation farmer who produces cotton in Dawson and Martin counties. He is chairman and partner with United Gin Corp. near Lamesa. He serves on the board of the National Cotton Council and is chairman of the American Cotton Producers where he is an advocate for sound farm policy in the development of the 2018 Farm Bill for cotton producers. He also has served as chairman of the American Cotton Producers Farm Policy Task Force, focusing on creation of the newly established seedcotton program for U.S. cotton producers.

FOUR PROFESSORS EARNED GRANTS FROM THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH THAT WILL ASSIST IN FUNDING A STUDY OF VARIOUS EFFECTS DOGS HAVE ON THE BEHAVIORAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH OF CHILDREN. The four professors are: Alexandra Protopopova, Ph.D., and Nathaniel Hall, Ph.D., both assistant professors in the Department of Animal & Food Sciences within the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources; Wes Dotson, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Department of Educational Psychology & Leadership and director of the Burkhart Center for Autism Education & Research in the College of Education and Jason Van Allen, Ph.D., an assistant professor and clinical program co-director in the Department of Psychological Sciences in the College of Arts & Sciences.

Protopopova and Hall are companion animal science researchers and coprincipal investigators on the research projects involving the use of therapy dogs and have earned grants, along with Dotson and Van Allen, from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Protopopova and Dotson have been awarded a two-year grant from the NIH for a research project to investigate the mechanisms that lead children with autism spectrum disorder to display improved social behavior. Hall and Van Allen will examine how the physical activity of preadolescent children who have a dog compares to the activity of those who do not, how much the dog’s and child’s physical activities mesh with each other, and how much a child’s attachment to the dog determines the amount of physical activity they share. Past research has shown that animal-assisted interventions, or therapy using dogs, can increase social behavior in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

THE RANCHING HERITAGE ASSOCIATION HAS AWARDED LONGTIME RHA BOARD MEMBER AND SUPPORTER R.A. “ROB” BROWN THE 2018 SADDLE & SIRLOIN CLUB PORTRAIT AWARD. The award is one of the highest bestowed on an animal agricultural leader who has made major contributions to the livestock industry in the U.S. and abroad. An oil portrait of Brown was painted by Richard Halstead, the renowned artist commissioned for the last 23 years. The portrait was unveiled at a special banquet during the North American International Livestock Exposition on Nov. 11 then hung in the Saddle and Sirloin Gallery in the Kentucky Exposition Center. The R.A. Brown Ranch is a multi-generation ranch located near Throckmorton, Texas. Brown built it into a substantial business that encompasses seedstock herds, Quarter Horses, commercial cattle, stocker operations, cattle feeding and farming. His livestock have made a significant impact on the world’s genetics and his industry leadership has played a significant role during critical moments of many cattle and horse organizations. He was the recipient of the coveted National Golden Spur Award in 1999.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY K-12 SIGNED AN INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENT IN VIETNAM AND ALLOWS THE ONLINE SCHOOL TO EXPAND ITS GLOBAL PARTNERSHIPS. TTU K-12, a unit of Texas Tech’s eLearning & Academic Partnerships, has signed an agreement with St. Nicholas International School that allows international students to study an exclusively American curriculum.

The initial group of 56 full-time students, ranging from first through 10th grade, includes not only Vietnamese students, but also Columbian, American, Korean, Spanish and Malaysian students. Jared Lay, director of recruitment and international partnerships for eLearning & Academic Partnerships, believes the school has the capacity to grow by 40-50 percent in the next year.

THREE TEXAS TECH PROFESSORS HAVE RECEIVED A $3.3 MILLION GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF ALLERGY AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES TO DEVELOP A PEANUT ALLERGY IMMUNOTHERAPY TREATMENT WITH THE USE OF MICRONEEDLES THAT WILL POSSIBLY ELIMINATE THE ALLERGY. Microneedles are tiny projections precisely engineered and arranged on a small patch the size of a dime. Drug molecules can be coated on the microneedles and then delivered into the top layers of the skin by applying the patch for about five minutes. When microneedles penetrate the skin, the coating dissolves in the moisture of the skin layers. The researchers hypothesize that they can coat the peanut allergen on the surfaces of the microneedles and use them to deliver the allergen into the skin. Administering a peanut allergen through shots can cause severe, life-threatening reactions, which is why peanut allergies are not treated with shots. However, if the allergen is delivered into the superficial layers of the skin, the systemic exposure—the uptake of the allergen into the blood circulation—can be minimized because there are no blood vessels in the very top layers of the skin. The length of the microneedles can be optimized so that researchers can reduce the side effects of the therapy.

Harvinder Gill, Ph.D., is the Whitacre Endowed Chair of Science & Engineering, an associate professor of chemical engineering in the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering and the principal investigator on the grant. Gill, already using microneedles to help treat dust mite allergens, is working with Brittany Backus, Ph.D., a senior research associate in the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources’ Department of Animal & Food Sciences, and Akhilesh Shakya, Ph.D., a research assistant professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Two physicians from the Food Allergy Program at the Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Carla Davis, M.D., and Sara Anvari, M.D., are also part of the collaborative team effort to develop the treatment.

THE 18TH ANNUAL HIGH AND DRY PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT, "A PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION OF PEOPLES AND PLACES OF THE WORLD'S DRY LANDS," WAS ON DISPLAY FROM LATE NOVEMBER THROUGH JANUARY 30, 2019, AT THE INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL CENTER GALLERIES AT 601 INDIANA AVE. The Office of International Affairs has displayed the High and Dry Photography Exhibit since 2000. The exhibit emphasizes the International Center for Arid and Semi-Arid Land Studies (ICASALS) within the Office of International Affairs. About 400 photos were submitted and almost 70 were selected for this year’s exhibition. Sponsors for the event were The CH Foundation, the Office of International Affairs and the International Center for Arid and SemiArid Land Studies.

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS THE TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS ON NOV. 2 HOSTED A DIA DE LOS MUERTOS PROCESIÓN, SPONSORED IN PART BY A GRANT FROM THE CH FOUNDATION. The event kicked off at the International Cultural Center, moved to the Texas Tech University School of Art, then to the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts and wrapped up at the Buddy Holly Center.

The evening included art exhibits, mariachi music, Sugar Skull face painting and a performance by the Ballet Folklorico Nuestra Herencia.

Dia de los Muertos, which translates in English to Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday that celebrates the life and death of deceased family members. Partygoers in Mexico attend parades where participants don costumes and make-up (generally Sugar Skulls), sing, dance and make offerings to loved ones.

or Red Raiders and music lovers everywhere, Texas Tech alumna Susan Graham’s outstanding voice and commanding stage presence have made her name synonymous with the highest quality of musical performances. Among the mezzo-soprano’s numerous honors are a GRAMMY, Musical America’s Vocalist of the Year and an Opera News Award, while Gramophone magazine has dubbed her “America’s favorite mezzo.”

Hailed as “an artist to treasure” by the New York Times, Graham rose to international prominence within just a few years of her professional debut, mastering an astonishing range of repertoire and genres along the way. A regular at the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall, she has also made frequent appearances throughout her career on five continents. At Texas Tech, she earned a bachelor’s degree in music in 1983 and master’s degree in music in 1985, before completing another master’s program at the Manhattan School of Music.

She is always glad to speak about her alma mater and all that she gained from the school. She wants to make sure that the School of Music continues to produce singers to go out into the world and share their talents.

University Symphony Orchestra for “Susan Graham in Concert,” presented by the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts at Texas Tech University. Proceeds from the event will go toward the building fund for a new School of Music building.

Graham’s career has taken her to the far corners of the earth, but as she puts it, “I’m thrilled to perform with the Texas Tech University Symphony Orchestra and to share my experiences with them.”

Likewise, she is always glad to speak about her alma mater and all that she gained from the school, and wants to make sure that the School of Music continues to provide other singers with the same opportunities.

“Everyone has a way of contributing and effecting change,” she says. “I was having dinner with Noel Zahler, dean of the College of Visual & Performing Arts, and I offered to help with a fundraiser, which is how the concert at the Meyerson came about. The College has always been so supportive of me, even traveling to hear me sing in Santa Fe and San Francisco. I am always looking for ways to give back to the school.”

Among the selections she will perform are pieces by Mozart and Berlioz, the latter exemplifying the fact that French is her favorite language to sing. She describes the concert repertoire as a collection of familiar and not-so-familiar pieces.

“It’s for a really good cause,” she says. “Increasingly as our culture goes forward in a way that may not please everyone, whether you’re in New York City, Dallas or Tularosa, an evening of music takes you away. It’s an escape and also reinforces our human bond.”

A Unique Place at Texas Tech University Benjamin Franklin was onto something in 1731 when he helped start the Library Company of Philadelphia, a subscription library that eventually grew into the first free public library. At the time, books were a luxury few people could afford, but an organization that would loan books made reading more accessible for many.

arrying the concept of a public library a step further, The Remnant Trust, an educational foundation, is a growing collection of written materials related to individual liberty and human dignity. It is a sort of traveling library that lends rare and unusual books and documents to schools and libraries throughout the United States. The idea behind The Trust is to provide as many people as possible with an opportunity to see, read and touch these important documents.

The permanent home of The Remnant Trust is at the Texas Tech University Southwest Collection/ Special Collections Library.

Kristophor Bex, a founding member of The Remnant Trust Board has served as president for 20 years. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Hillsdale College and a master’s degree in literature from Purdue University, Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Peggy Gordon Miller, president emeritus of South Dakota State University, serves as a special assistant to the Texas Tech University provost for The Remnant Trust. During her time as interim dean of the Texas Tech University Graduate School, she was instrumental in bringing the first exhibition of the books to Texas Tech.

“The Remnant Trust didn’t start with a collection—it started as an idea,” Bex says. “My father, Brian Bex, and a group of men and women from Indiana decided to begin a program based on the Great Books program that started at the University of Chicago. The group began acquiring first editions

and other versions of the top 100 ‘great rare books’ from book dealers’ inventories and through auction houses.

The Remnant Trust’s mission is “to elevate educational standards and the public’s understanding of individual liberty and human dignity through the precedent setting, hands-on availability of the world’s great ideas in original form.”

The group became The Remnant Trust Inc. and began to loan items to institutions for a semester. About eight years ago, they sent 40 items to the Museum of Texas Tech University. During the semester the materials were at Texas Tech, about 63,000 people visited the museum to see them. The Trust had been looking for a permanent home for the collection, and Texas Tech seemed a good fit.

“As far as I know, it’s unique—the world’s only rare book lending library,” Bex says. “It is available to professors, students and other university personnel.”

More than 1,500 rare books and manuscripts make up the collection. Visitors to The Trust’s home in Lubbock or those who view items in traveling programs across the country have an opportunity to handle items from the collection, with holdings dating back to 1250. Unlike many other libraries and museums ask people to wear white gloves while handling rare items, The Trust does not require such.

Bex explains that he believes the idea of white gloves is overemphasized in protecting documents.

“It’s more important to us that people really connect with documents by touching them and reading them,” he says.

“Academic institutions, throughout the modern world, are present-day manifestations of the long history of intellectual development in the great cultures that have risen, collided, and modified through the ages,” Ryan says. . . “Such institutions grew as gathering places within which questions were posed about authority, liberty, obedience, justice, property, security, and other fundamentals of human relationships in society and the natural world; as well as much consideration of human obligations directly and indirectly to the divine and the supernatural.

“The ‘gathering places’ were then, as they are now, centers for ideas, challenges to ideas, dispute, and discussion. What is freedom? What is legitimate authority? What is liberty? What threatens or violates these conditions?”

One could almost draw a timeline through all the items in the collection as they pose ideas about liberty, human rights and other important aspects of life that are then answered in a later work. It’s as if the writers are having a long-term debate that continues through the ages, as the world changes and evolves.

A 1350 manuscript of the Magna Carta is housed in the vault. The document was first drafted by Archbishop of Canterbury Stephen Langton in 1215 and was agreed to by John, King of England. It is considered a groundbreaking legal document on which the United States’ “Bill of Rights” is based.

Another important holding is a copy of Thomas Paine’s 1776 pamphlet “Common Sense,” which outlines his arguments for the American Colonies’ seeking independence from Great Britain. Bex notes that the copy in the collection is a sixth edition—25 editions were printed in its first year of publication, making Paine’s treatise the first best seller in this country, aside from the Bible.

Adding to interest is that the edition was printed on cotton rag paper. Wood pulp paper, which is used today for printing, was not used until 1790.

Other documents related to government include an 1788 edition of “The Federalist,” a commentary on the Constitution of the United States written by three United States Founding Fathers—Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton; the fourth U.S. President, James Madison; and John Jay, first Chief Justice of the United States.

A first-edition printing of “The Gettysburg Address” by United States President Abraham Lincoln, dated 1863, also belongs to the collection.

Religious documents reside alongside governmental documents and works of literature. Ever-expanding, the spiritual item portion of The Trust contains works from major religions throughout the world.

A 16th-century Hebrew Torah, retired from a synagogue, provides the rare opportunity of visitors’ being able to touch a Torah. No person, including a rabbi, may touch a Torah because of the risk of damaging the lettering or receiving harm from touching sacred documents. Instead, rabbis use a “yad,” a silver implement, to unroll the document and help them to read it.

A fairly new addition to the collection is the “Book of Enoch,” a biblical book of the lost prophet Enoch, grandfather of Noah. An important religious document, this copy is one of only two known to exist in the world. It was written about 1450.

A 1611 Bible known as the “He Bible” is another highlight of the collection. The “He Bible” gets its name because verse Ruth 3:15 incorrectly reads “he went into the city.”

In the Second Edition, it correctly reads “she went into the city.” Fewer than 200 copies of the “He Bible” exist.

Many important works by writers and philosophers are found in their rarest forms at The Remnant Trust. Several of John Locke’s essays from the 1690s reside on the shelves, as does a first edition of Mary Wollstonecraft’s 1792 “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman.”

To preserve these precious documents and books, The Trust keeps them in a special vault, not just for security, but also to maintain the items’ integrity by protecting them from the elements. Humidity is maintained at 45 percent with a constant temperature of 65 degrees F. The fluorescent ceiling lights are covered with a special UV filter so items do not fade. Although taking photos is allowed, with permission, flash photography is not.

“There is a special fire suppression unit in the vault,” says Malorie Kreighbaum, unit manager for The Trust. “Instead of a sprinkler system, there is a special agent that is released in case of fire. It won’t harm the items stored there.”

How fortunate Texas Tech is to have such an esteemed collection of literary items on its campus to share with people on campus as well as others.

On Dec. 20, 2018, the No. 12 men’s Red Raider basketball team was pitted against the No. 2 Duke Blue Devils in a sold-out game at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Though the final score wasn’t what Coach Chris Beard, his players or the Texas Tech fans hoped for—69-58—the game itself was historic.

ESPN reported that the Texas Tech-Duke game garnered the highest-ratings on ESPN2 for a college basketball game in three years. It also went down the in the ESPN record books as one of the network’s highest rated basketball games.

The final score doesn’t reflect Tech’s success throughout the entire game. With 11:17 to play in the first half, Tech took a 14-12 lead over Duke and maintained a lead throughout the first half and into the second half until, at, 11:15, Duke tied with the Red Raiders 4545. From there it was a back and forth battle until the last six minutes of the game, when Duke pulled ahead and ultimately won.

Coach Beard has created a team that is respected and feared across the country.

Finishing the 2017-2018 season at No. 8 set a precedent that has Red Raider fans energized.

Packed home games this season at the United Supermarkets Arena are electric. It’s a thrilling time to be a men’s basketball fan at Texas Tech.

In high school, Beard’s position in basketball was as a shooting guard. “I was always the kind of guy that understood how to play and worked really hard at it. I wasn’t a great player, but as I’ve gotten older, I have some pride about how I approached the game.”

“You make a decision, then you make it right by your attitude, your actions and your commitment for whatever you’re doing.”

As with many success stories, it wasn’t one or two things that made Beard a success, it’s the combination of his life experiences.

He was born in Marietta, Georgia, in 1973.

“I moved around quite a bit as a kid, which kind of helps me in recruiting because I can claim a lot of different places,” Beard says. “I was born in Georgia and then moved to Texas when I was just a young kid, maybe kindergarten…I remember all the trips going back to see my grandparents, and I associate myself with Georgia. But Texas is home.”

Beard’s family lived in Irving, and he attended school there until his junior year.

“My first two years (of high school) I went to Irving High, and my last two years of high school, I went to McCullough High School, which is now known as The Woodlands, Texas,” he says.

Sports were a fundamental part of Beard’s youth. He notes that most of his role models were coaches.

“It was kind of a different day back then,” he explains. “I played football.

When football season was over, you played basketball. When basketball was over, you played baseball in the summer. When I got to my high school years, I had just absolutely fallen in love with basketball and dedicated my life to that.”

Beard says in football he played defensive back and while on offense he was a slot receiver. In baseball he was usually shortstop. His love of basketball, and his devotion to the sport, earned him a spot to play college ball.

“I was actually set to go to Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, where I was going to play basketball,” Beard says. “They had a coaching change at the last minute, so I made the decision to go to Texas (The University of Texas-Austin) really late in my senior year.”

Although Beard didn’t get to play college basketball, he got a taste of something he loved even more: coaching.

“I had great appreciation and respect for what Coach Penders was doing with basketball at Texas, and I wanted to be a part of it,” he says. “I ended up working for the team for three years for Coach Tom Penders, and it really helped me get my start in coaching.”

He says his responsibilities included helping the players in practice and working in the basketball office. The relationship he built with the coaches was a pivotal moment for Beard, who says he soaked in everything about coaching he could, including recruiting methods.

Beard’s certainty that coaching was for him led him to a change in majors.

“I was in the Business School there (at the University of Texas) because I was maybe even thinking about some type of sports marketing. But just after one short semester in college, I knew that my heart was in coaching. I’ll never forget the day I went down there and changed my major. People were looking at me like I was crazy. Like, ‘You want to get out of the Texas Business School, which is almost impossible to get into?’”

He made the switch to kinesiology and never looked back.

“No regrets,” Beard answered when asked about doubts he might have had about changing his college path. “I’ve always been a believer that you make a decision and you make it right. I don’t spend much time thinking about the what-ifs.

“That’s some of the best advice I ever got: you make a decision and then you make it right, there’s no ‘right’ decisions in life. None of us can tell the future, have fortune tellers…you make a decision, then you make it right by your attitude, your actions and your commitment for whatever you’re doing.”

Since graduating from college, Beard has coached 11 programs. (See Coaching Career box.) In every head coaching position he’s held, he has had a winning record—a winning record he brought with him to Texas Tech.

“From a basketball standpoint, I really want to win a national championship,” he says. “I want to play on that last Monday night, where everybody else in our sport’s either at the game or at sports bars or with their families watching the game. I’m a dreamer at heart. Some people think it’s crazy to think like that, but I got in this to try to win that very last game.”

Beard pushes his athletes on the court and off. “I’m committed to getting our guys graduated. A lot of coaches will say that at a press conference or in a book, but when you go back and check their track record they really didn’t mean it. I’m proud, as a head coach, that every guy that has played for us throughout his eligibility has a degree. At Texas Tech we’ve had…10 seniors in our first two years and all 10 have their degrees.”

Recruiting a winning team is a never-ending challenge. It’s a skill Beard has sharpened since he was an undergrad— he says he’s picked up skills and knowledge from every coach he’s worked with.

“Yeah, there’s nothing easy about winning, recruiting, coaching,” he says. “Situations can change, but nothing’s easy. It’s like when I coached at lower levels, I’d say man if I could ever get to the Big 12, it’s probably easier at that level. No way. And that’s like people saying, ‘Boy it’s probably easy to recruit at Kansas or Kentucky.’ No, it’s not. It brings another whole level of problems and issues. So, I think what changes is just circumstances and strategies. I don’t think it ever gets easy.

“The thing I learned about college basketball quickly is it’s all about the players. You’ve got to have some real players to have a chance and that’s certainly what’s happening at Texas Tech. Our first year, we were competitive, we were relative. Our second year, we have NBA talent on the roster, we make the Elite Eight. This isn’t a high level of physics or accounting, this is you get good players, you treat them right, you coach them, you develop a good team chemistry. Play hard and you can win.”

Beard says, when recruiting, he looks for qualities aside from basketballs skills.

“We look for real unselfishness, a guy that doesn’t have any entitlement, a guy that wants to be part of a team, a guy that wants to win,” says Beard of his recruiting standards. “I have no problem if you’re individually driven. At this level, you want to coach guys that want to play in the NBA, that want to be pros. But the way to do that is through team success, and I think last year was probably the best example with Keenan (Evans) and with the Pistons’ and Zhaire (Smith) being the first oneand-done, the 16th pick of the draft and he’s out.

“I don’t think those things happen for those individual players if our team doesn’t do what we do. So of course, things like toughness and skill and athleticism, but all coaches are looking for that. But I also love guys that have a story like a chip on their shoulder. I’ve always kind of considered myself an underdog. I know I’ve got a story. So I love guys that are trying to prove people wrong. I like second chance guys.”

Beard acknowledges that, during his career, he’s had people question his choices as a coach.

“Actually, I appreciate those people in my past,” he says. “I tell players all the time, ‘You’ve got to be motivated by the people that believe in you, but you’ve also got to never forget your haters.’ As a competitor, there’s a real psyche in that. I thank some of the people in my past who might have doubted what we could do. I never doubted myself. I feel like I know how to win.”

“I’ve always kind of considered myself an underdog.

I know I’ve got a story. So I love guys that are trying to prove people wrong. I like second chance guys.”

Every new season brings fresh challenges. Like many coaches, Beard’s teams are never the same, whether it’s because players have graduated or been drafted or because an assistant coach has moved on.

“I’ve always just looked at that one way: as great success when teams win like our teams do,” Beard says about his philosophy. “It brings opportunity for everyone. Players get to play pro basketball. Players get to get jobs. Coaches get to move up in the profession. So, my idea of an assistant coach is somebody that stays with us two or three years and then gets a head job.”

Rather than looking at the loss of a stellar player or assistant as a negative, Beard views it as a positive. Losing players to the draft and losing assistants to head coaching gigs means his program is thriving.

Beard loves to see his former players and assistants succeeding. Do they stay in touch?

“Absolutely,” he says, with a firm nod of his head. “Whether it’s birthdays or Christmas or when guys are getting married… unfortunately there are tragic times, too, when somebody has a loss. But I think, of course, technology today, with text messaging and social media, allows you to keep up with guys.”

One of Beard’s long-time coaching friends is Clif Carroll, who graduated from Texas Tech in 2006. Carroll is the men’s head basketball coach at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas.

“I met Chris Beard when he was coaching with Bob Knight,” says Carroll, who was a team manager for the Texas Tech men’s basketball team from 2002-2006. “When I graduated and became an assistant coach at South Plains College in ’06-’07, that’s when our relationship went from that of a coach/manager to being buddies.”

The two men have maintained their friendship through the years, regardless of the towns in which they’ve coached. While Carroll was coaching in Levelland and Beard was still at Texas Tech, the two men would spend time in Beard’s Jeep, hunting and spending time outdoors. When Carroll was coaching in Dallas and Beard had recruiting trips there, Carroll says he would chauffer his friend from spot to spot.

“He’s been a buddy, but also a mentor and someone I look up to and can call on anytime—it’s not often a Big 12 coach and Division III coach talk about basketball,” Carroll says with a laugh. “It’s hard to put into words how proud I am of him. I always knew there was something special and something different about him.”

Both Carroll and Beard have experienced many coaching changes in their careers, yet they’ve maintained their friendship through the years. When Beard was at McMurry, the two men’s teams played each other four times. And when Beard left McMurry to take over the Angelo State men’s team, Carroll was hired as Beard’s replacement at McMurry.

“Watching his success has been great,” says Carroll. “And his continued success, from McMurry to Angelo State, that was impressive, and that kind of fed the fire. It was very evident to me then that he was on a mission.

“He’s not like everyone else and that’s what makes him stand out. He has a way of making people believe in him and his mission, he’s just a different kind of guy.

To see his career path and being by his side for a lot of it…my earliest memories are of being in the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum watching Gerald Myers coach. Texas Tech holds a special place in my heart and having one of my very best friends leading that team is significant to me. Having a connection with Chris and his staff, that makes me proud. I fly my Texas Tech flag down here in the Big Bend.”

Beard is marching toward his goal of winning a national championship. The 2017-2018 season saw him lead Texas Tech to its first-ever Elite Eight berth. He was named Big 12 Co-Coach of the Year for 2018. He’s breaking records left and right, like his 2017-2018 win at Kansas, a first-ever experience that followed 17 years of Tech losing to Kansas when on the road. Beard is making himself unforgettable to his fans, something he’s always been to his players.

“The last thing I always tell every team when the season ends—and it always ends sooner than you want, unless you’re playing in that championship game—but I just tell the players, ‘Life will separate us, but I’m always here for you,’” Beard says. “All you’ve got to do is call, track me down, you’ll know where I’m coaching and if I can ever do anything to help you, I will.’ Every relationship is different. I’ve got some players I talk to every month. I’ve got other players I might talk to once a year. But once you go through a battle of a season and, somehow, it’s just a special bond that can never be broken.”

Beard cuts a serious figure at games. He’s focused and he’s fierce. But tune in to the post-game press conference after a win, and you’ll catch a glimpse of his other side. He smiles. Sometimes he’ll even joke with reporters. But, that’s just a glimpse, because for the most part, when it comes to basketball, Beard possesses a single-minded determination.

But sit down, away from the court, and you will see a different side. You’ll see how deeply committed to basketball he is, but that’s not all.

He’s very open about his love for and devotion to his daughters: Avery, a freshman at Columbia University in New York City; Ella, a sophomore at Abilene Wylie High School; and Margo, a sixth-grader at Wylie Middle School.

Part of staying grounded is maintaining a close relationship with the women in his life, which includes girlfriend Randi Trew, a volleyball coach at Frenship High School in nearby Wolfforth, Texas. These four females play a role in his game-day prep.

“Really the main thing that I have to do is I’ve got to talk to the four girls: I have got to talk to the three daughters before the game, and my girlfriend, Randi,” explains Beard. “I just can’t, like, I can’t get calm or focused…It used to be no problem when the girls were a little younger, but now they kind of have lives; they’re busy. That’s just more of a security thing. Just kind of talking to all four of them before the game.”

I saw his sense of humor on display during our interview in his office when discussing a number of items. One of those was during the game day preparation discussion.

“I’ve been known to wear the same pair of socks, every single game,” Beard divulged.

“And not wash them?” I asked.

“No, not if we are playing well,” Beard said, with a smile on his face.

At one point I wondered aloud if Beard knew much about Texas Tech when he was a kid. Beard told me a story from his youth that followed him all the way to his current job as Texas Tech’s head coach.

“I grew up knowing about Texas Tech football and Texas Tech basketball,” Beard says. “It started with Coach Myers when he was head coach. I only went to one overnight basketball camp as a kid, and it was at Texas Tech.

“Before I started playing varsity basketball, I think I was like an eighth grader, I saw an ad, actually in the Irving newspaper. I’d always read the sports page every day growing up, and in the back there would always be classifieds… one day there was an ad for the Gerald Myers Basketball Camp. I saw the ad and a couple of my friends and I, we saved our money.

We flew down here on a Southwest Airline flight. It was one of the first times I was ever on a flight. And then we went to Coach Myers’ camp; I actually won the Hot Shot competition at camp. And when it gets down to the last day, where everyone is getting their awards, they don’t have the award.”

Beard was told the award would be mailed to him, but he never received it.

“Then I come here as an assistant coach for 10 years with Coach Knight and Pat (Knight). I was around Coach Myers every day, but I know how to stay in my lane…but when I got the job here, the head coach job, within 15 minutes of the press conference, I told Gerald, ‘Hey Coach.

Man, I won the Hot Shot back in 1987 and, you know, I never received my award.’

A couple of months later, Coach Myers presented me with the Hot Shot Gerald Myers Basketball Camp award.”

The award is now displayed on a bookshelf in Beard’s office.

Something that’s more well-known is Beard’s affinity for Whataburger. His favorite?

“Variety is the spice of life, but my go to is just the No. 1, mustard, pickle, cheese only,” he shares.

Sometimes, if girlfriend Trew isn’t with him, he indulges in a salted caramel milkshake.

But why Whataburger? Beard traces that back to his high school years.

“In The Woodlands those last two years (of high school), it was a really small town at the time,” he says. “There was nothing much there and there were two places open after midnight. It was Whataburger and The Kettle, and The Kettle really didn’t want high school kids hanging out. So it was kind of like a high school hangout. Then I’ve always had a great appreciation for dive bars and hole-in-the-wall restaurants. I pride myself in knowing things like where the best barbecue is, and just the more I thought about it and the older I got, I’m just convinced there’s not a better burger than Whataburger. Even though it’s fast food, I just love it.”

Beard’s job obviously requires him to travel frequently. When he’s not busy with work, he says he still loves to travel, which is how he’s located so many out-of-the-way restaurants and bars. One of the places we discussed was Alpine, where Beard’s friend Carroll lives.

“I go down there once a year,” Beard says. “We’ll (Clif Carroll) spend half a day over in Marfa, then end the day in Alpine.”

Occasionally the two will meander east to Marathon, home of the White Buffalo Bar inside the historic Gage Hotel—which isn’t a dive, but it is a small out-of-the way establishment in remote far West Texas.

Another little fact about Coach Beard: he loves music. In particular, Bob Seger. Music playing in the background is not uncommon during a Beard practice session, but not just his selections.

“I think above all, I respect variety and diversity,” he says. “I ask the players all the time, ‘What’s your favorite kind of food?’ And a guy will tell me, ‘Seafood.’ Then I ask, ‘Well can you eat that every single day?’ And he says, ‘No, of course not.’ So, it’s the same thing with music.

“I can’t understand how you can listen to the same music all day every day. For me, I like a variety, but if I had to pick some genres, I love country music, both traditional and Texas country. In country music I’ve been listening to a lot of Travis Tritt lately. Travis Tritt was a big part of our Elite Eight run. You know, they fight it at first, but then I think they end up liking the diversity, too. Just like I learn from them, too. I mean there are some rap songs. Like, two years ago, I got into Lil Yachty a little bit. Then last year there was some Drake that I didn’t hate. I don’t think the guys would tell you the same thing.”

In addition to using music to bring together his team, there are also team dinners.

“I’m not a big fluff guy,” Beard says “I’d much rather have a little bit of substance and a few things we believe in. We aren’t going to be a team that’s just making things up to go do. But we do talk about relationships and our unselfish culture. Through that, some of those relationships hatch naturally and some of them you’ve got to work at. With our team, we like to eat together a lot. One of our standards, we don’t have a lot of rules, we have standards, and one of our standards is no cell phones when we are having a team meal. We all put our phones in what we call The Golden Bucket. So we talk and relate more. In today’s world with these guys, some of them have a hard time even having a conversation because of cell phones. We have a yearly bowling competition. We have a yearly retreat we take. But I would like to think that the guys that play in our program on the way out say, ‘Hey, these were real relationships. They weren’t fake; these were real. I know these coaches got my back.’”

Nonformula Requests Nonformula requests are for funds allocated outside the formula funding to provide start-up funding for other strategic initiatives that leverage millions of dollars of additional non-state funding to support academic programs, research and public service.

School of Veterinary Medicine • Texas Tech is working to establish Texas’ first veterinary school in mo e than 100 years in response to the critical veterinary medicine needs and educational demand throughout our state and nation. Texas Tech is asking for $17.35 million from the Texas Legislature, which will match more than $90 million that’s been raised.

Academic and Student Success Funds • With goals of a 90 percent 1-year retention rate and a 70 percent 6-year graduation rate, Texas Tech is requesting funds that will provide instruction and resources that help ensure each student completes their degree by reducing drop, fail and withdrawal rates—particularly among first genera tion students and underrepresented student populations.

Other Programs • This includes support for Texas Tech’s museum programs, preservation of the second largest collection of Vietnam War materials in the world, and support for the university’s research expertise in agriculture, energy and emerging technologies.

Continue and Enhance Research Funding Texas has historically made significant investments in esearch support to empower universities to explore innovative solutions and new ideas. The International Engineering Program

The Edward E. Whitacre, Jr., College of Engineering at Texas Tech University is known for excellence in academics, graduates who go on to have distinguished careers, outstanding researchers and professors and students who perform at a world-class academic level. For the past few years, the college has yet another program that sets them apart from other schools—it is the first public engineering school in the nited States to require undergraduate students to study abroad as part of their education. The International Engineering Program is the brainchild of Al Sacco, Jr., Ph.D., dean of the college.

“We had our first class who participated in the study abroad program in 2013,” Sacco says.

Sacco, a chemical engineer, has traveled extensively for his academic and administrative career. He also has served as the payload specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia on shuttle mission STS-73 in 1995.

Students select the country where they want to travel. To satisfy the requirement, they may choose one of four paths: Study Abroad, Internship Abroad, Service Project Abroad or Research Project Abroad. Red Raider engineering students have been all over the globe, and where they choose to go and what they choose to do there is as varied as they are. Students have attended classes in Ireland, held internships in Japan and Korea, installed solar panels in an African village and worked with researchers improving aircraft in Brazil. Regardless of where they go, they are taught in English.

Each student must spend at least six weeks abroad. Students pay for their own trips, but if they can prove there is financial need, the college has an endowment of $5 million from which they can defray the cost with a scholarship.

They hope to raise the endowment to $10 million. He notes that most of the endowment results from the generosity of alumni who see the value of students’ learning abroad.

“From my own personal experience, I know that students mature from living abroad,” Sacco says. “They become more culturally aware and broader minded. Those traits are important as we become more of a global economy.”

A bonus is acquiring another language. Sacco notes that 35 percent of the students who study abroad are or become bilingual, mostly in Spanish and Portuguese. Most people become functional in another language while living abroad and when they return home, take language classes to become fluent.

The study abroad program has been hugely successful. Once the program was established, Sacco says that the applications to the college doubled. Many students opt to attend engineering school at Texas Tech University just because of the international program. For others, the requirement may be daunting.

“I had a young woman come to see me, and she slammed her palms down on my desk when she came into my office,” he says. “She said, ‘I hated you for making me go abroad, but going to Spain is the best thing that’s ever happened to me.’ She talked about how she could speak Spanish as a result of her time in Spain and that she was much more confident. She now has a job with Boeing Aerospace.

“Students who have served in the military and foreign students are not required to participate. However, many of them choose to be part of the program and travel somewhere they haven’t been. In fact, a number of students who participate end up studying abroad twice. Some even delay their graduations so they can spend more time abroad.”

George Spoth, executive associate dean for International Engineering Programs and his staff of Zaida Gracia, assistant academic dean, and program managers Ashley Haseley, Morgan Trevino and Allison Wright provide support and guidance for students as they prepare to step on foreign soil.

“Our team travels to destinations where students want to go abroad,” Spoth says. “We want to be sure they are safe and see what types of accommodations are there. This summer, I went to Seville. Last year, I went to Brazil and Argentina.”

A 1978 Texas Tech graduate with a degree in Latin American Studies, Spoth spent time in Brazil and Venezuela with the United States Air Force. He also served with the U.S. Diplomatic Corps in Bolivia and Chile and has worked in many different countries. His extensive experience abroad makes him the perfect person to head the international program.

As examples, we have internships in Costa Rica with Hewlett-Packard as well as an internship position with an alumnus-owned company in Singapore called Dril-Quip. Likewise, we have students who do internships with the German multinational Bosch in South America and internships in France and Germany with X-Fab, which is the world‘s leading foundry group for analog/mixed-signal semiconductor applications.

He explains that most students stay with host families. However, in Australia, they reside in apartments. In Rome, they live in apartment style dormitories with other students.

“The majority of our students choose to go to Europe,” Spoth says. “Many go to Latin America because it’s less expensive than other countries.”

Spoth is grateful for his time abroad and the experiences he had abroad. Now, he says, it is “his turn to give back.”

Dante Agbontaen

Five undergraduates in a variety of engineering degree programs who visited several different countries offer their insight into the International Engineering Program.

When I first learned about the study abroad requirement I was not sure what to expect. I was very nervous and uneasy about being away from friends and family for an extended period of time.

However, I’m glad that I was able to overcome my fears. Going abroad was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It allowed me to acquire global awareness, enhance my language and communication skills and learn engineering applications from a different perspective.

The first time I went abroad, I selected Spain because it was Texas Tech’s most popular destination to study abroad. In addition, I’ve always had aspirations to go to Spain.

The second time I went abroad I choose Argentina because it was the cheapest option. I told my parents I did not want them to pay for my expenses abroad. I worked hard finding and competing for scholarships so that I could cover all of the expenses on my own. Because I chose Argentina, I was able to cover my airfare and program cost with the Gilman International Scholarship and the SACS scholarship.

While I was in Spain and Argentina, I made it a priority to socialize with the locals as much as I could so that I could learn about the culture. It’s one thing to learn about another culture by reading books or listening to tour guides, but it’s much better to learn about a culture by immersing yourself in the environment.

Before my experience abroad, I took Spanish classes in high school, but I forgot most of it upon my arrival in Spain. But after a couple of days, most of the Spanish that I learned in high school began to come back to me. Also, I began to pick up Spanish after being surrounded by it.

My international experience has been the highlight of my Texas Tech career. I believe it distinguishes me from students whenever I go to career fairs across the United States because most students do not have multiple international experiences along with an internship overseas. Also, it has affected my career path because now I won’t just consider working in the United States but I will also consider working internationally as well.

When I first learned about the study abroad requirement, I was insanely happy. Since I was a little kid, I have been fascinated with Japan and its culture. So naturally, when hearing that I will have to go abroad, I instantly wanted to go to the place of my dreams, Japan. However, when I learned that at the time there was no program in Japan, I became sad. I did not want to study abroad because the one place in the world I wanted to visit was not an option. So instead I set my sights on Spain to just move forward with my college education.

About a month before, I had to lock in my choice to go to Spain, Ashley Haseley sent out an email offering an internship in Japan for engineering students. I guess you could say I was very lucky this opportunity opened up when it did and that my dream location became a possibility.

I went to Japan to work at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo to learn and possibly Timothy Bell, work in the computer language Ruby and/or the web framework Ruby on Rails. There Computer Engineering was a convention that was happening the day after I arrived in Japan, and the professor Japan I was working under was speaking. I attended the convention and learned a ton of really interesting things about what people in the industry were doing and how they were solving their problems. I worked Monday to Friday and then went all over Tokyo on the weekends. The train systems were easy to learn and they were very convenient.

This experience helped my outlook on my future tremendously. To be able to work in an environment that was similar to what a job in the industry was like only strengthened my love for the field. This experience made me excited to graduate and dive into the software engineering field. Furthermore, I was able to use my experience from my research internship in Japan to make me stand out at the job fair here on campus.

I loved every second I was in Japan. All of my fellow interns enjoyed their experiences, too. If it is an option, go to Japan because it is simply amazing.

more about and travel to Ireland. Therefore, when I started researching programs, early on I came upon University College Dublin (UCD). While I definitely researched into all of my options, UCD offered courses necessary for my degree, advocated itself as a global university, had great opportunity for travel around Ireland and Europe and presented the opportunity to live near a large European city to better immerse myself during my first true international experience.

My time abroad, outside of classes, was split between going out with friends or traveling. During the weekdays, I usually went out with a group of people to socialize over dinner or a drink.

Most of the time we tried to choose a new place so that we could explore Dublin as much as we could while we were there. Weekends were perfect days to explore Dublin and its surrounding areas, other parts of Ireland, or even other parts of Europe. I went on many day trips with my roommates and other friends or through the university’s international program and its clubs and societies.

As Ireland is rich in historical sites and even richer in rugged natural beauty, I went on a variety of interesting tours and beautiful hikes. I was there for four months and I still have places I didn’t get to visit or would love to go to again! Overall, I dedicated as much time as possible to learning about Ireland’s history, experiencing its culture, taking in breathtaking sights, and spending time with the amazing people I met along the way.

Studying abroad left me feeling optimistic and excited for the future. In regard to my courses, and my college life in general, I returned from my semester abroad eager to learn and do more.

I strived to retain more knowledge, to be more active on campus and in the community. A combination of being away from all the opportunities I have at Tech and a renewed appreciation for learning, I am continuing to perform well in my classes and volunteer regularly with various organizations that I am a part of. I am enjoying my time in college at Tech, building relationships with new people and gaining valuable career and life experience along the way.

As for my career path, I gained a clearer view of a potential path I could follow in the field of environmental engineering. Through one of my courses abroad, I was afforded the opportunity to tour the Ballymore Eustace Water & Sludge Treatment Plant. Just south of Dublin, it is one of the main plants providing the city with clean water. I was able to see the water treatment process in its entirety, receiving explanations of the individual processes at every stage.

This opportunity confirmed and furthered my interest in water treatment and will serve me well in my coming upper-level courses and in my career pursuits.

Because I am part of the five-year “freshman-to-master’s degree” program for environmental engineering here at Tech, I still have quite a while until I graduate. Despite this, I have thought about my post-graduation plans and in general what I would like my future to look like. Following graduation, I hope to be able to go straight into the work force, preferably with a job in the engineering field.

As a result of studying abroad, I am also more interested and open to positions dealing with global outreach and international relations. I have recently added a Spanish minor onto my degree plan and hope to one day be fluent in Spanish so that I may use these skills in both my personal and professional life. Lastly, whether it be through my career or as a result of my personal planning and savings, I wish to travel and see more of the world. I would like to experience new cultures in regions I’ve never been Jasmine Workman, to as well as return to Ireland one day.

Simon Woldemichael I had initially heard of

the International Experience requirement during orientation, the summer before my freshman year. I had always wanted to travel outside of the United States on my own, but the thought of doing so seemed like too large of a dream. It wasn’t until the fall semester of my sophomore year when I began the application process, that it dawned on me how excited I was to go abroad. The fact that the requirement was in place was exactly what I needed to get my parents to agree to allow me to travel to a different country on my own.

I’ve always had an interest in Asian culture and knew I wanted to go to a metropolitan place somewhere in Southeast Asia. There were many programs from which to choose. I spoke with the Engineering Diplomats, asked friends who had studied abroad and did a lot of research. My study abroad adviser, Ashley Haseley, introduced me to the program in Hong Kong. I honestly owe the awesome experience and opportunity all to her.

Aside from taking 12 credit hours in Hong Kong, I did a lot of exploring and traveling. During a normal semester at Texas Tech, I would focus on classes and student organizations. During my semester abroad, I took it upon myself to get outside of my comfort zone and be much more outgoing than usual. I ventured throughout a majority of Hong Kong and did a lot of sightseeing. There was not a single day when I wasn’t out and doing something exciting or trying something new. I made lots of new friends from all over the world and really enjoyed exchanging stories and experiences with them. I also had the opportunity to travel to Tokyo, Shanghai and Beijing for a few weeks.

Additionally, I am now much less shy and reserved than I was before my international experience.

Before going to Hong Kong, I knew almost zero Mandarin. One of the courses I took at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University was an introductory Chinese course, so I definitely speak and understand more now than I did before the exchange program. Cantonese is the most spoken type of Chinese used in Hong Kong, but many people speak English. Overall, I didn’t have any problems.

Studying abroad was life-changing for me. It has honestly been the greatest experience I’ve had in my life thus far and is easily the highlight of the four years that I have spent here at Texas Tech. I cannot stress how grateful I am to have gone to Hong Kong.

Juan Gomez When I first learned about the program, I was nervous and excited. I originally scheduled an appointment with the International Program Office in the Whitacre College of Engineering to let them know it would be financially impossible for me to go abroad, but I soon learned that there was a myriad of scholarship opportunities available for students. I was fortunate enough to receive a scholarship coupled with an amazing internship opportunity.

After reading about programs in other countries, I thought Brazil seemed to be the best fit for me because it provided a great internship opportunity. Few people realize that Brazil is an industrial giant and is the ninth largest economy in the world. It also gave me an opportunity to experience Brazilian culture and even learn Portuguese.

I worked with one of the best Brazilian researchers on composite materials. The research team was involved in a project which had received funding from Embraer (the third largest aircraft manufacturer in the world) with the goal of developing stronger/lighter materials for their aircraft.

Professionally, I now think about solutions having a global impact and not just local. Once abroad, one realizes how many similarities we share with people around the world. It has made me much more confident to work, travel and live abroad and has opened my willingness to go abroad when I start my professional career.

I’m not quite sure what I will do after graduation, but the international experience has opened many doors to choose from because company recruiters are always interested in my work and cultural experience abroad. Being a fluent Spanish speaker, I was also able to learn Portuguese while in Brazil, which is also very helpful.

Matt Wells Named Head Football Coach at Texas Tech

MATT WELLS HAS BEEN TABBED THE 16TH HEAD FOOTBALL COACH IN TEXAS TECH HISTORY

MATT WELLS, A TWO-TIME MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE COACH OF THE YEAR RECIPIENT, HAS BEEN NAMED THE 16TH HEAD FOOTBALL COACH IN TEXAS TECH HISTORY, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS KIRBY HOCUTT ANNOUNCED NOV. 29.

Wells, who led Utah State to a 10-2 record and a top-25 ranking this season, was formally introduced at a Dec. 1. news conference inside United Supermarkets Arena. The press conference was open to the public and will be streamed online at TexasTech.TV. “Quickly in the interview process, it became clear Matt Wells and his leadership style were a perfect fit to lead our football program,” Hocutt said. “We have a great future in store under Coach Wells, and I firmly believe he is the right coach to take us to an elite level. We are thrilled to welcome Coach Wells and his family to Lubbock.”

Wells compiled a 44-34 overall record at his alma mater, leading Utah State to five bowl appearances during his six seasons. Utah State had made only eight bowl appearances in its history prior to Wells’ promotion from offensive coordinator after the 2012 season. Wells is the only head coach in Utah State history to lead the Aggies to at least three bowl games as well as multiple bowl victories.

Wells has pushed Utah State to two of its three 10-win campaigns in its history as the Aggies were 10-4 in his second season in 2014 and then 10-2 this season entering a potential bowl matchup. Utah State was also 9-5 during Wells’ debut season in 2013, which marked the most wins for a first-year head coach in program history.

“My family and I are excited to join the Red Raider family,” Wells said. “I can’t thank Kirby Hocutt, Tony Hernandez and Dr. Schovanec enough for this opportunity. I am excited to meet the team and get to work on building an elite program that Red Raider fans will enjoy every Saturday.”

Wells will bring both his offensive and defensive coordinator with him from Utah State as David Yost, a semifinalist for the Broyles Award (nation’s top assistant coach), and Keith Patterson will fill the same role they had with the Aggies. Utah State is currently ranked 24th in the Amway Coaches Poll and recently appeared in the College Football Playoff poll.

The Aggies have featured one of the most dynamic offenses in the country this season, averaging 47.2 points per game, which trails only Oklahoma and Alabama among schools nationally. Entering its bowl game, Utah State is slated to snap the single-season record for scoring average that was set in 1961 as the Aggies are averaging over 30 points per game for the third time under Wells.

Part of Utah State’s success on the scoreboard has stemmed from its defense as the Aggies rank second nationally with six defensive touchdowns this season. Utah State also shares the FBS lead with 18 interceptions to go along with 10 fumble recoveries for an Aggies’ defense that ranks third nationally with 28 takeaways. Utah State is plus-11 in the turnover margin, which sits eighth nationally entering this weekend.

Strong defenses have been a staple under Wells as the Aggies are allowing only 23 points per game this season, marking the third time during his tenure Utah State has surrendered 25 points or less. The Aggies gave up only 17.1 points per game in 2013 and then 19.7 points per game the following year.

Wells collected his second Mountain West Coach of the Year honor in late 2018, making him just the fifth Mountain West coach to receive the honor twice, joining the likes of Sonny Lubick, Rocky Long, Urban Meyer and Gary Patterson. He also received the accolade following his debut season in 2013.

Prior to accepting the head coaching position, Wells spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the Aggies, serving as quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator in 2011 before being promoted to offensive coordinator a year later. Utah State won 18 games in those two seasons, including a school-record 11 victories in 2012.

Utah State claimed the 2012 WAC title, its first outright conference championship since 1936 and just its third in school history with Wells as the offensive coordinator. That season, Wells directed an Aggie offense that set single-season school records for total points (454), total offense (6,108), completions (285) and total yards per game (469.8).

Wells, a quarterback for the Aggies from 1994-96, was a member of two conference championship teams as a student athlete, who came as a redshirt freshman in 1993 and as a senior in 1996 when Utah State was a member of the Big West Conference. The Aggies defeated Ball State, 42-33 in the 1993 Las Vegas Bowl II for the school’s first-ever bowl victory.

A native of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Wells returned to his alma mater following his second stint as an assistant coach at the University of New Mexico.

Wells served as the Lobos’ wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator from 2007-08 and then rejoined the staff as wide receivers coach in 2010. In between, he was Louisville’s quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator for the 2009 season.

Prior to his first stint at New Mexico, Wells spent five years (2002-06) as the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Tulsa and five years at the U.S. Naval Academy (1997-01) as its quarterbacks, fullbacks and wide receivers coach. He was also the junior varsity head coach and offensive coordinator for three years.

Wells earned his bachelor’s degree in business marketing from Utah State in 1996, graduating cum laude. He and his wife, Jen, have two daughters, Jadyn (16) and Ella (13), and one son, Wyatt (10).

“We have a great future in store under Coach Wells, and I firmly believe he is the right coach to take us to an elite level. We are thrilled to welcome Coach Wells and his family to Lubbock.”

Blake L. Boteler, a 1984 graduate with a BS in geology, from Dallas, Texas, has been recognized for his work as an ATF Special Agent by the National Law Enforcement Museum in Washington D.C. The undercover operations exhibit is displaying the motorcycle and gang vest Blake wore during his two-year undercover investigation of the Branch Davidian Shootout case. President Donald Trump and other VIP’s attended the grand opening of the museum on Oct. 11. Blake is now retired from ATF and is working as executive protection for AT&T at their Dallas headquarters. His wife is Tamra Cowan Boteler, a 1984 graduate with a BS degree in food & nutrition. He was featured in the story “Bad Boys, Bad Boys, Watcha Gonna Do?” by Jennifer Ritz in the May/ June 2001 issue of the Texas Techsan magazine.

Senior Master Sgt. Paul Ellis, who is stationed at Fort Sam Houston Medical Center in San Antonio, was allowed to have his photo taken on the Texas Tech football field during a trip to Lubbock. He is the San Antonio Chapter secretary.

Madeline Lockhart Junior Madeline Lockhart, a double major in physics and mathematics, understands the importance of taking advantage of opportunities. As a female in a maledominated field, her path to future success relies on seizing every moment.

In high school, she earned an internship at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

That internship, along with her love for science and mathematics, has propelled her scholastic journey here at Texas Tech where she was recently named a Goldwater Scholar.

Her future plans include earning a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering and working internationally to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Madeline’s passion for success is a common trait found in the incredible students in the Texas Tech College of Arts & Sciences.

KURT CASWELL , writer and professor of cre-

ative writing and literature in the Honors College at Texas Tech University, has written the book “Laika’s Window” about the Russian dog Laika, who became the first animal to orbit the earth in Sputnik 2 in 1957. Caswell also serves on the faculty at the Vermont College of Fine Arts. He has written other books, including “Getting to Grey Owl,” “In the Sun’s House” and “An Inside Passage,” which won the 2008 River Teeth Literary Nonfiction Book Prize. He also has penned an anthology of nature writing, “To Everything on Earth: New Writing on Fate, Community, and Nature,” which he coedited.

His essays have appeared in ISLE, Isotope, Matter, Ninth Letter, Orion, River Teeth and the American Literary Review.

Gerald was able to bring more than 50 years of experience in the industry to the firm.

He is currently an active member of the Abilene community, serving as a Big County Hall of Fame board member, an Abilene Exchange Club member and a Speaker’s Club member. Gerald also holds volunteer leadership positions with Abilene Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, Western Heritage Classic and United Way. He previously served as the president for Hospice of Abilene. The Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame was established in 2000 and is dedicated to honoring athletes, teams, coaches, sports administrators or contributors that have brought significant recognition to the area through their success, leadership and notable achievement. Candidates for induction must exemplify the highest standards of sportsmanship, ethical conduct, character and inspirational features.

Bob retired from being the United States Olympic Committee Director of Media Services in 2012 after 28 years of diligently serving this community, positively impacting the world’s premier media services system at the Olympic Games.

He handled the media for USOC as well as international media and gained the lasting respect of countless writers and broadcasters around the world. Before his position at USOC, Bob served as the assistant athletic director and sports information director at Southern Methodist

University from 1971-1984. Since his retirement, he has helped wrestling return to the Olympic Games, serving as the communications officer for the international federation in Switzerland. He has also served as the manager of press operations for United World Wrestling, an International Adviser for the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto and a media manager for the 2016 Rio Olympic Organizing Committee for golf’s return to the games. In 2012, Bob was honored with the Spirit of the Springs Award by Colorado Springs mayor Steve Bach. His wife is Lynnette.

1973 JOHN “MIKE” HAYNES (BA Journalism, MA ’91 Mass Communications) Amarillo, Texas, was inducted into the Texas Community College Journalism Association Distinguished Hall of Honor at a banquet held Oct. 12 at Texas A&M University-Commerce. He retired in 2016 after teaching journalism and mass media at Amarillo College for 25 years. John also served as the editorial adviser of The University Daily and “La Ventana” from 1983 to 1990. He was named a College Media Association Honor Roll Adviser in 1986, honored as the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association Adviser of the Year in 2002 and was inducted into the Panhandle Press Association Hall of Fame in 2009. He has worked at the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, the Amarillo GlobeNews and served as publisher of McLean News. Bob and his sister, Sheri, are copublishers of Panhandle-Plains Basketball Magazine. His wife is Kathryn.

Economics) Alexandria, Virginia, was sworn in to serve as a commissioner on the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission Sept. 5. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission is an independent agency of the U.S. government created in 1974 that regulates futures and option markets. Its mission is to foster open, transparent, competitive and financially sound markets. Dawn was a recipient of a Distinguished Alumni Award from Texas Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources in 2017. Prior to Dawn’s appointment, she served as president of Stump Strategic, a consulting firm she founded in 2016. Before starting her firm, she was executive director and senior vice president of U.S. Policy for the Futures Industry Association and a vice president at the New York Stock Exchange. During much of her career,

she served the public sector through staff positions in both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, including six years at the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry where she focused on various farm policy, rural development and renewable energy matters. Her husband is Jeremy.

ur science goes to uter space

“As an engineer, I thought there has got to be a better way to do this.” NemaLife, Inc. President and CEO Siva Vanapalli, Ph.D., said it’s not as much of a stretch as some may think for a Texas Tech chemical engineering professor to found a biotech company. He explained engineers study systems, which can be correlated to living organisms. He said he’s intrigued with applying his engineering expertise to help advance research related to biological systems. His current business venture began with an idea to use fluidic concepts, such as the transport and pumping of liquids, in research involving a millimeter-long roundworm called C. elegans. The transparent nematode has several basic biological systems and functions analogous to the more complex ones of humans. Vanapalli said as the first multicellular organism to have its entire genome sequenced, the roundworm is an ideal model for drug discovery, toxicity screening and biology research on hundreds of human diseases. After visiting several labs engaged in such research, Vanapalli said he was struck by some significant drawbacks associated with the traditional agar plate-under-the-microscope method of observational testing. “It’s time consuming, tedious, and subjective,” he said. That all contributes to longer turnaround time and greater expense for the preclinical phase of development of drug candidates.

Instead of a microscope and petri dish, it involves a benchtop unit with a replaceable patent-pending multi-port channeled chamber that houses the C. elegans worms. The system allows for the automated delivery of drug compounds as well as the introduction of liquids for feeding the test subject worms and separating out progeny. IN SUMMER 2018, TEXAS TECH THIRD-YEAR LAW STUDENT TASHIKA CURLEE WON A CASE AT THE FIFTH CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS WHILE INTERNING AT THE FEDERAL PUBLIC DEFENDER’S OFFICE IN LUBBOCK. She and Assistant Federal Public Defender BRANDON BECK (’12) appealed a restitution award imposed by a federal district court in Dallas. Their client had pleaded guilty to defrauding the Grand Prairie Independent School District of nearly a million dollars, but the court’s restitution award included not only what the client had embezzled but also repayment of the school district’s attorney fees and costs associated with a private internal audit. Trial counsel objected but were overruled. Curlee identified a similar case that the U.S. Supreme Court had decided on May 29, 2018, only days earlier: Lagos v. United States, 138 S. Ct. 1684 (2018). In Lagos, the Court unanimously held that a district court’s authority under the Mandatory Victims Restitution Act of 1996 was “limited to government investigations and criminal proceedings,” and did not include “private investigations and civil proceedings.”

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Dallas conceded and filed a motion to vacate the unlawful portion of the restitution award and to remand for resentencing before the district court. On remand, the district court reformed its judgment to reflect the precise amounts that Beck and Curlee had argued were appropriate.

ZIYE (JESSE) DONGA , a chemical engineering doctoral student, won the first place Graduate Student Award in Biomaterials Session (8B) at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers annual conference in October. His research focuses on isolation of circulating tumor cells from blood using nano-structured hollow glass microspheres.

JENNIFER HEWITT , a chemical engineering doctoral student, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar Award to study nine months at the Max Planck Institute for the Biology of Aging in Cologne, Germany. Her research involves using worms as a model system to determine the effects of exercise and nutrition on muscle mass and aging.
