Loyal Members,

It’s a thrill to be writing my first column in t e Texas Techsan, having initially worked with this publication as a student intern in the late ’80s. I’m forever grateful to former editor Marsha (Gustafson) Pflu er, who hired me on a part-time basis after taking her MCOM magazine writing class. It was the advent of desktop publishing and the decision to bring magazine production in house that led to a full-time position with the Alumni Association. I worked closely with Marsha during that publishing transition and later with current editors Jean Ann Cantore and Jennifer Ritz who still oversee this longstanding Tech tradition. Though eventually becoming involved with other facets of alumni operations, my roots are with the Techsan, which remains a hallmark benefit of embership, keeping readers apprised not only of university news and events, but featuring our amazingly talented graduates.

On the subject of membership, special thanks to all of our readers who represent TTAA members who attended long ago to our most recent grads. Our association exists because of the loyal contributions of thousands just like you, giving back to their alma mater and belonging to an ever-growing community of loyalists who want the best for Texas Tech. As noted in our annual reports that are distributed within this publication, TTAA supports the academic mission of Texas Tech University in a variety of ways. Evan Akene Graduate Student Evan Akene grew up in rural Nigeria and witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of diseases like malaria, cholera and typhoid.

After his family moved to the United States, Evan got the opportunity to attend Texas Tech where he earned a bachelor’s degree in microbiology. He is presently working on a master’s degree in healthcare administration from the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center and plans to attend medical school.

Drawing on his childhood experiences, Evan wants to make a difference in the lives of people living in rural areas by introducing new forms of medical technology and telemedicine.

Evan is a shining example of the compassionate and innovative spirit shared by students in the Texas Tech College of Arts & Sciences.

PEOPLE TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY SYSTEM BOARD OF REGENTS CHAIRMAN RESIGNS, AND REGENTS ELECT THE CHAIR AND VICE CHAIR TO REPLACE THE POSITIONS. L. Frederick “Rick” Francis announced his resignation as the board chair on Oct. 4. The Board of Regents have elected Tim Lancaster as chairman and Christopher M. Huckabee as vice chairman of the board during a special-called meeting. Lancaster was appointed by Gov. Rick Perry to the Board of Regents in February 2013 and was named vice chairman in February 2017. He has served as President and CEO of Hendrick Health System in Abilene since 2004. He earned his bachelor of business administration in fina ce from Texas Tech University. Huckabee was appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott to the Board of Regents Jan. 22, 2018. He is the CEO of Huckabee Architecture, Engineering and Program Management. He is a past board member for Cook Children’s Health Foundation and the Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth. He earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Texas Tech University and is a registered architect in Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arkansas and Georgia, and he holds National Council of Architectural Registration Boards Certification

TEXAS TECH GRADUATE AND 103-YEAR-OLD WORLD WAR II VETERAN CATHERINE ROYALTY SPOKE TO STUDENTS DURING A LUNCH DISCUSSION HOSTED BY TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY’S HONORS COLLEGE ON SEPT. 21. Royalty graduated from Lubbock High School in 1932. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English and journalism from Texas Tech in 1936 and went on to teach and serve as librarian in Post, Texas, for four years. She taught in Lubbock for the rest of her 34-year teaching career. When the United States entered World War II in 1941, she joined the U.S. Navy as a member of the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Services (WAVES). Stationed in San Francisco, she coded and decoded ship movements for three years. She then returned to Lubbock to teach.

THE TEXAS TECH POLICE DEPARTMENT ON OCT. 27 UNVEILED A MEMORIAL TO HONOR OFFICER FLOYD EAST, JR. The memorial is located outside the TTPD. Also, on Oct. 9, 2018, at 1:45 p.m., there was a university-wide moment of silence honoring the remembrance of East’s service and dedication to the Texas Tech Community.

East was shot and killed the night of Oct. 9, 2017, following a welfare check request to a student’s dorm room and further investigation at the TTPD. Chancellor Tedd Mitchell, Student Government Association President Sean Lewis, Provost Michael Galyean and Texas Tech Police Chief Kyle Bonath all spoke at the moment of silence event. The Officer F yd East Jr. Memorial Scholarship was established in East’s honor to support undergraduate and graduate students in the Institute of Forensic Science or sociology majors with a criminology concentration at Texas Tech.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY GRADUATE MONTE L. MONROE, PH.D., HAS BEEN APPOINTED BY GOV. GREG ABBOTT TO SERVE AS THE TEXAS STATE HISTORIAN. Monroe will be responsible for increasing public knowledge about the rich and diverse history of the state, encouraging the teaching of Texas history in public schools, consulting with state leaders to promote Texas history and making presentations on Texas history topics until his term ends in September 2020. He is currently the archivist of the Southwest Collection and on faculty at Texas Tech University. Monroe is a founding board member of the Humanities Center at Texas Tech, president of the Rotary Club and president of the Meriwether Society, Inc. He has also taught and published widely on Texas history, serves on the Texas Historical Records Advisory Board, is a chair of the Texas State Historical Association Archives Committee, is on the Executive Advisory Committee of the Handbook of Texas Women Online and is a former board member for the Texas Map Society. Monroe received his bachelor’s degree in literature and history from Stephen F. Austin State University and his master’s degree and doctorate in history from Texas Tech University.

NEWS TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY’S 2018 FALL ENROLLMENT NUMBERS HAVE SET SIX NEW RECORDS. The overall enrollment increased 3.3 percent from 2017, welcoming 38,246 students to Texas Tech. The freshman class went up 4.9 percent, bringing the total number of freshman entering the university to 6,173 students.

There was a 62.5 percent increase of National Merit Finalists compared to 2017, bringing the total to 57 students including the 26 freshmen. There were 2,310 freshmen and 623 transfer students awarded the Presidential Scholarship. First-year retention increased to 85 percent, and the second-year retention increased to 74.5 percent.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY OPENED A NEW RECRUITMENT CENTER IN IRVING, TEXAS, AND HAS PARTNERED WITH TEXAS TECH CREDIT UNION TO PROVIDE MORTGAGE LENDING SERVICES TO NORTH TEXAS IN A SPACE ADJACENT TO THE NEW RECRUITMENT CENTER. The Office of dergraduate Admissions hosted a reception and ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the opening of the new recruitment center in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on Aug. 1. The new recruitment center is a one-stop shop for prospective students interested in attending Texas Tech, as well as a resource for high school counselors and community college partners in the area. The opening recognizes Texas Tech’s continued growth as a national research university and allows the university’s undergraduate admissions staff to reach ore prospective students. The partnered credit union has served the Texas Tech family since it was chartered in 1959, and the growth into the Metroplex creates opportunities to continue meeting needs and creating value within the Texas Tech community.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY’S DIVISION OF DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION HOSTED THE ANNUAL EL GRITO EVENT SEPT. 15. El Grito is a celebratory event that kicks off Hispanic eritage Month. The celebration has been held at Texas Tech since 2010 and honors the legacy of Mexico’s declaration of independence from Spain while sharing history and cultures from Latin American countries. The Mariachi Los Matadores and El Ballet Folklorico Nuestra Herencia performed at the event.

NEW FOOTBALL COACH NAMED TEXAS TECH DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS KIRBY HOCUTT NAMED MATT WELLS THE 16TH HEAD FOOTBALL COACH FOR THE RED RAIDERS ON NOV. 29.

His hiring comes after former head coach Kliff King bury was released from his position earlier this month.

A two-time Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year recipient, Wells had been head football coach for the Utah State University Aggies since 2012. Prior to serving as head coach, he spent two seasons as an assistant coach, serving as quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator in 2011 before being promoted to offensi e coordinator in 2012. This past season, his team had a 10-2 record and a Top-25 ranking. In addition, his team went on to fi e bowl games in his six seasons as head coach.

Wells received his bachelor’s degree in business marketing from Utah State in 1996, graduating cum laude. He and his wife, Jen, have two daughters, Jadyn and Ella, and one son, Wyatt.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE TOP ONLINE DISABILITY-FRIENDLY INSTITUTIONS IN THE NATION. Texas Tech continues its tradition of serving all students by being ranked No. 5 best online college for students with disabilities and No. 9 most affordab e college for students with disabilities in the nation. In 2017, Texas Tech was ranked No. 7 for best online disability-friendly institution. The Student Disability Services (SDS) works hard to make the transition for students with mental, physical and learning disabilities as seamless as possible. The improvement in ranking was due to the eLearning & Academic Partnerships that make the university and course information easily available to all students by monitoring websites and learning platforms for all online content to ensure that materials are fully accessible and useable.

GOV. GREG ABBOTT IS RECOMMENDING THAT TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY’S TELEMEDICINE WELLNESS, INTERVENTION, TRIAGE AND REFERRAL PROJECT (TWITR) IS A POSSIBLE TOOL TO PREVENT SCHOOL SHOOTINGS. TWITR is currently serving 10 rural school districts in West Texas; however, Gov. Abbott is suggesting that the project be expanded statewide. Texas Tech has long had a telemedicine program, which uses the Internet and telecommunications technology to connect rural residents with health professionals without the participants having to travel. Many schools in rural areas don’t have adequate counselors on staff, a d in some places, the nearest mental health professional could be miles away. TWITR is likened to a “classic screening program” that helps to identify students that need assistance whether they are violent or not. The program then seeks to navigate students into appropriate care for their situation. The program trains school personnel to recognize early warning signs for which a student could be referred into the program. The screening process looks for depression, anxiety, loneliness, isolation, a propensity for anger and impulsiveness. Roughly 40,000 students are currently enrolled in TWITR, and a little more than 400 students have been referred since 2014. Of those, only 200 have been screened by telemedicine, and so far, 25 students have been recommended for removal from school. The success seen from the schools that have utilized the program gives hope that the TWITR project could save lives within the school system.

BUDDY HOLLY, ONE OF LUBBOCK’S MOST WELL-KNOWN MUSICAL ARTISTS, IS THE SUBJECT OF A COLLECTION NOW OWNED BY THE TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY SOUTHWEST COLLECTION. The collection was featured in an exhibit, “Buddy Holly: Life, Legend, Legacy,” at the SWC from September through October. The exhibit contained photos, posters, ephemera and artifacts from one of Holly’s biggest fans, Bill Griggs. The Bill Griggs Collection was donated to the Crossroads of Music Archive by Texas Tech alumnus Randy Steele, who was placed in charge of caring for the collection after Griggs’ death.

Maneuvering through the sea of people wearing red and black, striding down the same tunnel that so many Masked Riders and their horses have traveled down before, being struck by the atmosphere of the roaring Texas Tech football fans, feeling the heartbeat of that stunning black equine through legs of the rider——for senior agricultural communications major Lyndi Starr, these experiences as Masked Rider have been, hands down, the best experiences of her life.

“A lot of riders say that your first run is i describable,” Starr shares. “It is indescribable in the fact that your emotions start the night before. And then, you’re just floo ed with every emotion you could possibly have. It’s that feeling when you listen to the magnificent Goin’ Ba d from Raiderland play, see the Saddle Tramps rattling their bells and watch that Masked Rider lead the football team down the fie d.

“I’m full of school spirit at that point, but I’m also the school spirit as the Masked Rider. Riding down the fie d is way more than I ever expected. After the guns go off, t e crowd’s roar softens and it’s the most free feeling ever just to run down the fie d. We are supposed to smile and hold our guns up, but it sure makes me want to hold my guns up high and smile big.

That adrenaline rush hits me, and I think I hold my breath the whole run.”

Because of unfortunate circumstances resulting in the injury of Masked Rider horse Fearless Champion, Starr’s ability to participate in football gameday traditions was at risk. Fortunately, a new horse, Cody, was able to fill in as t e temporary Masked Rider horse and has allowed Starr to participate in the gameday activities, the most significant a d iconic being the ability to lead the football team onto the fie d.

In order for Cody to partake in his role as the temporary Masked Rider horse—until Fearless Champion is healthy and sound enough to run again—Cody had to undergo a series of tests to ensure his safety, the rider’s safety and the safety of everyone around him. Fearless Champion’s injury was announced on Aug. 30, and Cody was brought to Lubbock on Saturday,

Editor’s note: Our intern Maeley Herring, an agricultural communications major from Archer City, Texas, is an amazing young woman who is involved in many Texas Tech activities including volunteering at the National Ranching Heritage Center, serving as an Agricultural Ambassador for the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources and as an assistant to the Masked Rider as well as being part of the football game day Masked Rider Field Safety Team. In her role as a volunteer for the Masked Rider, she spends countless hours with Lyndi Starr, the current Masked Rider, and with the Masked Rider horse. When she told me she was a long-time friend of Sidney Dunkel, whose family lent Cody to Texas Tech, I asked if she would be willing to write a story about the horse. She, of course, accepted. This is her first full-length eature, and she not only did an amazing job, she has first-hand experienc with Cody. I hope you enjoy Maeley’s peek into how gracefully Cody stepped into the “horseshoes” of Fearless Champion. Guns Up!

Sept. 1. Within a week, Cody went through the necessary tests and was named the temporary replacement for Fearless Champion. Cody and Starr’s first run was Saturday, Sept. 8, at t e football game against Lamar University.

Sam Jackson, Ph.D., a professor within the Department of Animal & Food Sciences, has been involved in the Masked Rider program for 21 years, where he serves as the adviser. Jackson explained what features and qualities a potential Masked Rider horse must possess in order to successfully fulfill t e Masked Rider horse position.

“We’re looking for a horse that is quiet, trainable and consistent,” Jackson says. “Our main concern is that the horse is able to handle the environment so that we don’t have to worry about him getting too upset or hurting anyone else. We’re looking for a horse that can be taught something new and can make those changes; therefore, they should have a mind that takes discipline well and learns.”

The first test was a r ding test where Jackson and Starr rode Cody at Kris Wilson Indoor Arena of the Texas Tech Equestrian Center to get a feel of what kind of horse he was. After gaining the approval from both Jackson and Starr, they took Cody to a band rehearsal on campus where they could see how he would react to the band.

“The first ti e I saw Cody, he was very quiet,” Starr says. “I didn’t want to get my hopes up that

he would be able to run in that first ome game because they say a lot of the horses that seem quiet don’t pass the band test and can’t handle the environment.

“I didn’t want to count my chickens before they hatched knowing this; however, he did really well at the band test. I rode him the rest of that week, and he stayed the same—quiet and consistent.”

The next step after the band test is to take the horse to a practice run in the Jones AT&T Stadium. Here, he will get to experience the entire pregame routine with the band, flags Saddle Tramps and gun shots.

“During the practice run, Cody didn’t know what was going on, but he did recognize that loud noise of a band he heard a couple days before,” Starr says. “Cody reacted very well, and we had no problems. I was very relieved at this point because I was going to be able to run Cody at the first ome game against Lamar.

“When we announced that Fearless was injured and that there wasn’t a backup horse yet, I saw the impact the Masked Rider running has on the Texas Tech community and fans. I didn’t want to blame myself for Fearless’ injury, but I was feeling like a letdown when I wouldn’t be able to carry on the tradition that’s lasted for many years. Cody working out as a temporary replacement was a Godsend.”

Once the press release was out stating that Cody would be able to fill in as t e Masked Rider horse, the Texas Tech community was supportive and excited that there would be a horse to run at the football games. Cody’s story added to the excitement of getting a new horse.

From the roping box to retirement in the pasture to the Jones AT&T Stadium, this black gelding has made his mark on the Texas Tech community.

Cody is owned by Jim and Mavis Jennings of Amarillo, Texas. Cody was living with the Dunkels, the Jennings’ daughter and her family, on their ranch in Archer County, Texas. Jim graduated from Texas A&M University in 1968. He is currently retired from the American Quarter Horse Association but works part-time writing scripts for Red Steagall’s television show “Somewhere West of Wall Street.” Cody has been called an “Aggie horse” by Texas Tech administration, and the fact that he comes from an Aggie family has been brought up in the media and by fans.

“There are a couple of things that are involved here,” Jim says. “One being the fact that my granddaughter, Sidney Dunkel, is attending Texas Tech. She is the one who asked me if we cared if they used Cody as the Masked Rider horse, if he passed all of the tests. And of course, we did not care. I think the talk about Cody being an Aggie horse comes from the old Southwestern Conference days when Texas Tech and Texas A&M played each other. That rivalry doesn’t exist anymore, so it wasn’t really a big deal. Because Sidney attends Texas Tech, as far as Mavis and I are concerned, we now support both universities.”

Sidney Dunkel is a Masked Rider assistant, helping Starr at appearances and during gamedays. She is a sophomore animal science equine production major from Archer City, Texas.

“It didn’t matter to me if Cody passed the tests or not,” Dunkel says.

“I was more concerned with Lyndi having a horse to run on. Running on the fie d as the Masked Rider is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I didn’t want her to have to miss out on that experience. It makes me proud to attend a university where my family can have such a major impact on gamedays. Cody has definitely sur rised us all with his hidden destiny.

After all, it took a Red Raider to make an Aggie horse famous.”

Cody’s registered name is Skip Cody Jay. Jim purchased Cody in 1998 when he was a yearling because he was the last foal by Jim’s father’s stallion, Sporty Jay. Sporty Jay’s mother was by a very well-known stallion back in the 50s named Pretty Buck.

Cody is now 21 years old and came out of retirement to assume the position as Masked Rider horse. He was originally trained as a yearling to be a ranch horse, where his main job was to doctor cattle and to be a wellrounded, good-tempered horse to ride. Jim rode him through wheat pastures doctoring calves, and his son-in-law, Doug Dunkel, rode him through his feedlot.

Jim started roping on Cody about eight years ago when his grandson, Blake Dunkel, started roping.

From there, Cody’s job was as a roping horse. Jim showed Cody in many AQHA roping events as well as the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo.

“My favorite memories with Cody would have to be being able to rope on him and rope with my grandkids, Blake and Sidney,” Jim reflects. “Co y holds a very special place in my heart. If for no other reason, it’d be because he was the last foal by my father’s stallion. When Sidney called and asked me if I thought [Cody] could do it, I thought he could.”

Jim and Mavis were given special passes that allowed them access on the fie d to watch Lyndi and Cody race down that stretch of turf, leading the football team onto the fie d before playing West Virginia.

“That was really neat,” Jim says, “But it really kind of started before that. We stood for close to an hour out there under the trees while people were taking their turns getting their picture made with Cody and Lyndi. However, when we started down the tunnel while the band was up against each side to let Lyndi and Cody through, all of the members of the band were talking to Cody and hollering at him as we went through. That was kind of neat. It really told me then how much the Masked Rider horse, not necessarily Cody, means to Texas Tech University. Once we were on the fie d, it was the same way. It was a neat experience to see just what the Masked Rider horse and rider duo mean to Texas Tech.”

Football gamedays for the Masked Rider start the day before, exercising the horse in preparation for the game. Starr rides Cody for a few hours during the middle of the night on Fridays and a few hours early Saturday morning depending on the kickoff time. The morning of home football games, she and her four assistants wash the Masked Rider truck and trailer and polish the tack.

Although gamedays occur only one day out of the week, Starr is responsible for the care and exercise of Cody during the entire football season.

Knowing Cody’s experience in roping, Starr wanted to change up his exercise routine to make it more fitting a d fun for him. She started roping the Heel-O-Matic, a calf dummy, on Cody in early October.

“I kind of roped throughout high school, but I’ve never had a horse that I could actually rope off of,” Starr says. “H ving taught several people how to rope, I figured Co y wouldn’t take any offense to a begin er like me.

I’m sure he’s turned a couple thousand head of cattle in his time. While I’m teaching him the ropes to the football games, Cody is teaching me the ropes to roping.”

“Cody has been so fun to bring through the program and take to the games,” Starr says. “I kind of got to show Cody the Masked Rider world, where as Fearless more or less introduced me into it. Cody has been a great horse to allow me to take him through the routine. And he’s special to me because he and I share our first a d our only football season together.

“Through each game, we are gradually getting braver, faster and more comfortable running. He’s definitely an o d man. He doesn’t get as excited as Fearless does about attending appearances, but I think he does enjoy having a little bit of excitement in his life.”

There is no set date for Fearless Champion’s full recovery and return to running, but Lyndi foresees Cody going home after the football season is complete. Fearless is currently able to attend standing and walking events but is still undergoing the healing and therapy processes.

“Most importantly, we want Fearless to be healthy and fit for t e upcoming seasons,” Starr says. “I imagine Cody will return home after the football season is complete. As of now, I am slowly exercising Fearless by walking and trotting for 10 minutes, three to four days out of the week. He was also given three rounds of acupuncture to help him get over any soreness from the injury and overcompensation. Once Fearless gets cleared, I will slowly start riding him more and add loping into his exercise routine. After he gets back in shape, he will go back to running.”

Until that time, Cody will continue to Strive for Honor in his role as the Masked Rider horse.

The “Raiderpalooza” themed week of homecoming at Texas Tech is packed with events for students and alumni. The

celebration kicked off onday, Oct. 15, at the Student Union Building North Plaza and ended with a Texas Tech 48-16 victory over Kansas at Jones AT&T Stadium.

The week’s events included a Student Organization Sing, a Tamale Fest, the Techsan Memorial and the Homecoming Stepshow. Friday, Oct. 19., there was an afternoon Rowdy Raider Rally, followed by an evening parade at 6 p.m. and Pep Rally at the United Supermarkets Arena.

On Friday the Top Techsan Luncheon was held at the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center, where four full-time, non-faculty employees of Texas Tech were honored for their dedication and service to the university. This year’s honorees were: Jon Mark Bernal, associate managing director, Student Union & Activities; Kacey Marshall, assistant director of Student Services, National Wind Institute; Ricardo Rocha, supervisor, Department of Animal & Food Sciences; Marcy Tyler, executive associate, Texas Tech Athletics.

A Matador Evening was dedicated to celebrating the Texas Tech Alumni Association career and contributions of Bill Dean, Ed.D. The event included a reception at 6 p.m., followed with a 7 p.m. dinner. Attire for the evening was semi-formal red and black.

Crowned during halftime of the football game were the Homecoming King and Queen: David Rivero of Lovington, New Mexico, and Abigail Raef of Amarillo, Texas. Rivero represented Beta Theta Pi fraternity and Raef represented Alpha Chi Omega sorority.

Many alumni forget that Texas Tech’s 400-acre Junction Campus includes frontage along the South Llano River. Like all property along the Llano, it was hit hard by the floodin .

“There really was no warning other than weather advisories on AccuWeather,” remarks Robert Stubblefie d, ’84, ’86, director of the Texas Tech University-Junction campus. “A notification was sent Sunday afternoon around 2:30 stating that there was a flood watch in effect. e sun was shining at that time. The next notification ca e in the middle of the night and they seemed to continue until morning.

Basically, there was no forewarning and certainly not of the magnitude of the event. I’m not sure what anyone could have done to prepare other than moving to high ground. It came too fast.”

There wasn’t much employees at the Junction campus could do but watch as years of work washed away.

“Damage at the fie d station was extensive along the river,” Stubblefie d says. “The water rose to the top of the amphitheater and into the pavilion.

Many trees were lost and debris settled in the tops of others. The riverbank was severely cut away in places and huge amounts of gravel deposited along the edge. The pecan bottom is covered in sand. The standing trees and bushes are piled high with debris and trash that washed down from upriver.

Excerpt from “Texas Tech on the Llano,” which was a story I wrote and published in the July/ August 2014 issue of the Texas Techsan: Texas Tech owns about 400 acres of undisturbed land bisected by the headwaters of the South Llano River. The acreage, located in the town of Junction, Texas, has long been referred to colloquially as “The Junction Campus,” and officially as the “ exas Tech University Center at Junction.” About a decade ago, it received the designation of “Llano River Field Station,” because of the large number of collaborative research projects performed on the campus—the U.S. Forest Service, Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, Texas A&M University, to name a few. The Llano River Field Station is the largest inland field s ation in the state.

The station is the site of multidisciplinary research focused on water, natural resources and education. Its stated goal is to “serve as a destination for scientific resear h, nature and ecotourism, ecosystem and water resource management, and education and training programs for Kindergarten through 12th grade students, undergraduate and graduate students, landowners and the public.”

“We lost several exclosures that were in place for demonstration. They were to protect an area from grazing pressures of deer and Axis to allow seedlings and little plants a chance to grow. What remains are a couple of gates, mangled wire and t-posts, all covered with debris and unsalvageable. Our Discovery Point Trail was washed away also. All the granite and base material is gone as well as the little bridge. It only resembles a trail now. We lost the nature blind and native plant beds. No buildings were affected except for a few eaky roofs. The majority of the damage was the river and large areas on both sides. It will be a massive clean up and restoration effort.

A crew from Tech’s flagship cam us in Lubbock was sent to assist in clean up and additional rain slowed those efforts. Stu blefie d says he received calls daily from administrators at Texas Tech to ensure needs were being met.

Because the river is the focal point of many events, the debris and muddy conditions have rendered the area too dangerous to access. The Junction campus is largely selfsuffi ent and the flood dama e required cancellation of a number of scheduled events, which will negatively effect r venue generation.

The Junction campus is a unique and integral part of the Texas Tech family, and Stubblefie d and his staff are looking forward to its restoration

Burton and fellow first responders sear hed the river banks following the flood. He says they found loads of items, including tractors, photos, suitcases packed with clothes, radios, even a few RV frames wedged in tree branches 15 feet above ground and entire vehicles buried. His advice is simple: “If there’s a flood, stay away from the water.”

First Responder One of the stories shared with me by Robert Stubblefie d involved a young first respo der who saved a woman’s life by throwing her his lifejacket. First responders risk their lives every time they go out on a call, but what made this story relevant to Texas Techsan readers is that this first respo der was a young Tech alumnus, Wyatt Burton, who received his bachelor’s in political science in 2017.

The woman, who was from Alabama, had been camping at the Junction RV Park with four others when the river rose so swiftly she was not able to evacuate.

“At 5:30 that morning we (Junction Volunteer Fire Department members) received a call for a swift water rescue for a family that needed to be evacuated from their home,” says Burton. “Before we made that call, we were retasked to the South Llano RV Park because there were about 60 people there.

We evacuated 40 people and rescued 19.”

Burton says he and other first respo ders, who were on one of the bridges that spans the river, were watching the Alabama woman. She was clinging to the branches of a tree while the debris-fil ed river rushed beneath her.

“She was upriver about 150 yards from us,” he recalls. “I could see her head and shoulders, but there was nothing we could do because of the constant rain. We couldn’t use helicopters—the water kept rising. I saw her fall out of the tree, and she started floating ownriver. I was right in her path, it was like precision bombing, and I dropped my life jacket down to her as she was swept under the bridge. She held on to it, but it didn’t look like she was able to get it on.”

More than 100 people from at least 18 agencies, including the Junction Volunteer Fire Department, combined efforts to assist with search and rescue. They used trained dogs, boats, drones and helicopters and searched by foot. They found vehicles and RVs two miles downstream from the park, and debris from the campsite more than 30 miles away.

Burton says he had been watching anything and everything being carried along in the floodwaters, rom wildlife to semitractor trailers.

“I watched her until she floated ver the dam and disappeared,” he says. “After that, I turned it off because I t y not to think about all the people you weren’t able to save—if you save one it’s better than saving none. It’s challenging to watch things like people’s lights from their cell phones disappear under water and knowing they’re gone.”

He did not know the fate of the woman until hours later. A fellow first respo der reported to Burton that they had rescued a woman who had ridden the flood ore than 20 miles from Junction.

Burton says he asked the first respo der, “Was she wearing a yellow lifejacket and purple shirt?”

To which the surprised first respo der replied, “Yes, she was.”

It was only then that Burton knew the woman had successfully grabbed his life jacket and secured it on her person. Her rescue was captured on cell phone video when she was rescued 23 miles downriver at Yates Crossing near London, Texas.

Helicopter first respo der crews pulled the woman, who was heard screaming for help, from the river. The woman was the only one of the four Alabama visitors who survived the flood She later asked to meet Burton to thank him for saving her life by providing her his life jacket.

“I didn’t need recognition,” notes Burton. “Everyone was acting like it was a big deal, but to me, it was natural.”

A

nyone who knows Curt Langford, new president and CEO of Texas Tech Alumni Association, will tell you that he has an intense appreciation for Texas Tech. Even if you don’t know him, once you have been around Curt for just a short time, you, too, will claim the same thing.

“I believe in my alma mater and the importance of higher education in general,” Langford says. “Working with alumni is worthy work. I’m a big believer in what we do and what we’re capable of doing here at the association.”

Langford graduated from Texas Tech University in 1990 with a bachelor of arts in public relations and in 1997, a master of arts in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis in higher education/mass communications. He has a long history with the Alumni Association, beginning with a part-time position while an undergraduate and then serving on staff rom 1989 to 2000, first as assistant editor of t e Texas Techsan magazine, then director of membership and marketing, Student Alumni Board (SAB) adviser and, ultimately, associate vice president for marketing.

According to former SAB President Isaac Albarado ’04, ‘11, Curt is an ideal fit for his ew role.

“I got to know Curt very well,” Albarado says. “He was great to listen and then advise you on how to better position yourself as a leader. He is the kind of leader that is always willing to take the time to teach, to listen, and to learn.”

Langford’s connection to Texas Tech University and Alumni Association runs deep. As he himself puts it, “It’s who and why I am.”

Nothing could be truer.

A Lubbock native, he grew up in a household where both higher education and loyalty to all things Texas Tech were valued. His father, Thomas A. Langford, Ph.D., was an English professor for many years on campus before being named associate dean and then dean of the Graduate School. Like his sons, he was a graduate of Texas Tech, with a master’s degree in English. Curt’s mother, Nellie, is a lifelong learner and avid reader who helped inspire her sons to pursue advanced degrees.

Curt’s older brother, David Langford, Ph.D., earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in communication and his doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy from Tech.

In addition, Curt’s wife, Jill Ashlock Langford, completed a bachelor’s degree in education from Texas Tech. They walked across the stage at graduation together in 1990, with the late Judge Rod Shaw as their commencement speaker.

The family connection doesn’t stop there. Their son, Grant, and daughter, Grace, both began attending Texas Tech this past fall. Ironically, their first day of classes at exas Tech was the day their dad was offered t e job of president and CEO of the Alumni Association.

“I feel I’ve returned home, back where I belong,” Curt says. “I now can have lunch at the Student Union with my son and daughter, just as I once did with Dad when we both were on campus.”

Langford’s spirit and passion for Tech is more than intact—in fact, it’s brimming, and it’s real. His earliest memories of campus were when he was a little boy and his dad carried him across Memorial Circle on the way to the stadium.

He remembers spending time as a child in the English Building and Holden Hall, where his father had offices. In ddition, he recalls the countless Red Raider basketball games he and his dad attended in the coliseum.

His love for Texas Tech intensified w en he was in college.

He enjoyed his early days as a student before declaring a major.

A self-described “tumbleweed,” he considered several career paths before deciding on a degree in public relations. ”Majoring in PR prepared me for whatever direction the wind blew after graduation,” he says. “The degree was versatile and fit e well.

“Jill and I were newlyweds in college. My senior year, I had a summer internship with The Bonneau Company in Dallas (sunglass distributor). They invited me to come back to work for them full-time after completing my degree.”

After the internship, he returned for his final se ester at Tech. He got a job at the Pioneer Hotel downtown, which was a retirement home then. He worked the midnight shift at the front desk. Those all-nighters made getting to and staying awake for class a challenge for him.

“That semester, I took Marsha (Gustafson) Pflu er’s magazine writing course and enjoyed it,” he says. “She later asked me to work for her as a student assistant for the Texas Techsan magazine. Her invitation set the course for where I am today.”

Pflu er remembers that Langford was a great student and also someone who stood out as being more on the ball than many others in the class.

“There was just something about him that made me think he would be a good fit with t e magazine,” she says.

As graduation approached, Langford thought back to the offer to return to work at Bonneau. However, Bill Dean had other ideas and offered him a full-ti e position at the Texas Tech Alumni Association.

“I loved working at the association and was thrilled when offered a full-ti e role. It included a permanent parking spot on campus which was hard to come by and meant a lot,” Langford says, jokingly.

For almost a decade, Langford wrote stories for and laid out the magazine alongside Pfluger. They formed a great bond that remains to this day.

“It was the advent of desktop publishing, so I was able to produce the Techsan internally on a Mac” he says. “We developed a web presence as the internet took off a d started ‘The Masked Reader,’ an online newsletter about alumni events and campus news for our emerging online community.”

Being a man of ideas, Langford began exploring ways to market the Alumni Association beyond the magazine. He facilitated a custom publishing partnership with Texas Monthly Magazine, where Texas Monthly sold advertising and printed the Techsan, assisting with the association’s bottom line. The arrangement proved to be a productive relationship for a number of years.

He also found ways to raise revenue for the association through a variety of affinity par erships that offered se vices and benefits to associ tion members. Perhaps the most recognizable program he initiated for the Alumni Association was restoring the university ring tradition, a program that continues to grow with students and alumni every semester. Langford recalls the first ring cere ony and a conversation with then Dean of Students Bob Ewalt, Ph.D. “Ewalt said to me, ‘You all have done a good thing. You’ve made our institution small again,’ speaking to the intimacy the ring tradition brings for those most loyal to the school,” Langford says.

Langford’s enthusiasm for and creative abilities regarding the ring were not lost on Ron Brostrom, head of Milestone Traditions, an upstart company leading the charge in collegiate ring programs. He offered Langford t e opportunity to join his team, consulting with alumni associations throughout the country.

“When I look at starting Milestone, with the benefit of 00 percent hindsight, there are certain decisions that stand out as being critical to the future success of the company,” Brostrom says. “Persuading Curt to join Milestone was one of those decisions.”

“It was tough emotionally to leave Tech at the time, but the offer was too strong to pass up for me and my family,” Langford says. “Handing that resignation letter to Dr. Dean was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done but turned out to be the right decision.”

He loved the Alumni Association and fretted leaving because he felt so closely aligned with it. He sought his dad’s advice. According to Curt, his father said, “Selfishly, I on’t want you to leave Tech. I’m proud of what you’re doing here and enjoy getting to have lunch occasionally on campus, but I don’t want to discourage you from a big opportunity for you and your family.”

When Curt pressed him for a definiti e yes or no, his father eventually said, “If you ever aspire to lead the Alumni Association, you need to leave.”

Langford credits his father’s words as the encouragement he needed to leave the nest, and so began his 18-year tenure consulting with colleges coast to coast. Although his job entailed marketing the Texas Tech ring program, he will tell you that it’s not about selling rings—it’s about building tradition and stronger, emotional engagement for the campuses with which they partnered.

“I left my alma mater when I joined Milestone, which eventually became Balfour, but I didn’t leave the alumni profession,” he says. “The position allowed me to expand my network, learn about other colleges and their alumni associations, making some wonderful friends along the way.”

When Bill Dean announced his retirement, Curt was encouraged by friends and family to apply for the job. He loved his role with Balfour but also longed to be part of Texas Tech again. Once he applied, there was no shortage of support from those who knew him at Tech and also from those in the profession wanting to see him back where he belongs, as the alumni leader at his alma mater.

Amy Button Renz, President and CEO of the K-State Alumni Association, was one of the first to advocate on his behalf.

“Curt is nationally respected within the profession,” she says. “He brings instant credibility among his peers in the Big 12 and also with the leaders of our self-governed alumni associations.”

According to Calvin Brown, who leads the alumni association at University of Alabama, “Curt is held in high esteem by his colleagues around the country.

His professional experience in the corporate world translates well in the business of alumni affairs.”

“I want to strengthen awareness and create a concrete understanding of the association both on campus, through academic departments, and off ampus, through our alumni.”

University of Missouri Alumni Director Todd McCubbin, says, “He will position TTAA as a prominent partner to the success of Texas Tech. In short, he epitomizes the ‘Red Raider Spirit.’”

Langford thought long and hard before applying, as he had contemplated this potential fork in the road for some time.

“I wanted to be sure that if I applied for the job, I was doing it for the right reasons,” he says. “There was a lot of prayerful consideration to confirm that y passion is for the mission of the association, not the position.”

This personal charge is a continual one for Langford, as he strives to be a servant leader for the alumni he represents.

“It’s humbling enough to follow a legendary leader like Bill Dean, but someone has to do this, and I feel uniquely equipped and called to do it,” he says. “My family and I are thrilled to be serving our alma mater in the years ahead.”

During the lengthy interview process, Curt charted his list of desired outcomes for the association.

“I want to strengthen awareness and create a more concrete understanding of the association both on campus, through academic departments, and off cam us, through our alumni,” he says. “In addition, I want to increase alumni participation and membership. Our ‘One of Us’ campaign, chapter networking, ring ceremonies and other strategic events all connect people to fellow grads and our association.

“I also want to strengthen our core initiative to provide academic scholarships to support even more students at Texas Tech, enabling the educational opportunity so many of us experienced firstha d.”

Langford also wants to uphold Texas Tech Alumni Association’s strong reputation nationally among peer institutions. He notes that there are several ways associations benchmark themselves and that Texas Tech scores well comparatively.

He wants to build on that success.

Membership is an area of focus for Langford, as it relates to overall alumni engagement.

“We want as many of our graduates engaged as possible, especially as we approach our University’s Centennial,” Langford says. “It’s up to us to plant as many seeds as possible, sowing the fie d for even bigger yields for Tech in the years ahead.”

Curt often refers to “thinking big,” citing President Paul W. Horn’s quote from a speech to the school’s first class “Everything that is done on these West Texas Plains ought to be on a big scale… Let us make the work of our college fit with the scope of our country. Let our thoughts be big thoughts and broad thoughts. Let our thinking be in worldwide terms.”

“Curt is a great choice for this position,” Bill Dean says. “He worked for us for 11 years and was our first director of mar eting. He pioneered the ring program and, in his most recent role, he has been in all kinds of alumni offices a und the country.

He is well versed in alumni relations, and he is and always has been a passionate Red Raider.”

Early on a Monday morning, staff members within the Office of the Chancellor for the Texas Tech University System gather around a conference table looking ahead at the next two months on the calendar for Tedd L. Mitchell, M.D., who was named the TTU System’s fifth chancellor on Oct. 25.

The calendar is a flur y of travel, events and meetings with state leaders, donors and internal team members, not unlike the schedules of the chancellors that came before him. However, this one is color coded—items marked in blue indicate the engagement is related to Mitchell’s other job.

“My phone tells me it’s a four-minute drive from my office a Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center to my office at e System Building,” said Mitchell.

Unique from his predecessors since the system’s formation in 1996, Mitchell serves a dual role as chancellor and also president of one of the TTU System’s charter universities, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, a position he has served in since 2010. He spends his time balancing the roles and switching his hats.

“It was important to me to remain connected to faculty and students as I considered taking on the role of chancellor,” said Mitchell. “Also, my passion is in health care, it’s in my DNA, so I asked the Board of Regents to let me continue serving as president in addition to my new role as chancellor.”

TTU System Board of Regents Chairman Tim Lancaster feels Mitchell is a perfect fit to se ve as chancellor at this time.

“Mitchell’s work at TTUHSC is unparalleled,” said Lancaster.

“His track record there is a major reason we thought he was the best fit to beco e chancellor, and he believes he can serve in both roles. If anyone can do it, it’s Dr. Mitchell.”

In Mitchell’s time as president of TTUHSC, he has led a period of record growth in student enrollment, academic excellence and physical expansion on all campuses while also serving as a faculty member. TTUHSC now graduates more health care professionals than any other health related institution in Texas.

Though Mitchell’s leadership is often credited for the outstanding growth at TTUHSC, at the event following his official appoin ent as chancellor, he asked for TTUHSC faculty and staff to sta d, then said, “These are the people who make that happen.”

When asked how he manages to serve in two high-impact jobs, Mitchell is again quick to credit the faculty and staff of t e TTU System’s component universities—Texas Tech University, TTUHSC, Angelo State University and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso—with making it possible.

“We have outstanding teams in place at the TTU System and TTUHSC with a true passion for the work we do and an unmatched work ethic,” said Mitchell. “I am so wholly committed to both positions, but I wouldn’t be able to take this on without their hard work and support.”

The role of the chancellor is to act as CEO of the entire TTU System and to work collaboratively with university presidents to set forth an outwardlooking vision of purposeful growth for the system institutions that operate on 17 campuses statewide and internationally. Mitchell says his already strong relationships with his fellow presidents will help him immensely in his new role.

He often likens the role of the TTU System to parents in the stands watching their kids—the universities—play football. The faculty, staff a d deans are the players, and the president is the head coach.

It’s the system’s responsibility to make sure the team has the resources needed to consistently play their best game, while cheering them on and supporting them as they go.

Mitchell earned his bachelor of science at Stephen F. Austin State University and is an Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Texas Medical Branch where he earned his doctor of medicine. Though, in the words of TTU System Board of Regents Vice Chairman Chris Huckabee, “He is certainly no stranger to the Red Raider community.”

Mitchell’s love for Texas Tech and the TTU System is prominent, even though he was new to Lubbock less than a decade ago.

Mitchell’s storied life and career has taken him across the span of the state before landing in the Hub City. A native of Longview, he stayed in East Texas for his undergraduate, then moved to the Gulf Coast to earn his medical degree, served as a captain in the U.S. Army Reserves (Medical Corps), then spent the majority of his career in Dallas where he served as president and CEO of the Cooper Clinic before coming to TTUHSC. During his time at the Cooper Clinic, Mitchell was appointed by President George W. Bush to the President’s Council for Physical Fitness and Sports.

Mitchell’s life is fil ed with stories of the places he’s been and the things he’s accomplished, but the story of how he and his family—wife, Janet TornelliMitchell, M.D., whom Mitchell met while they were in medical school, and two of his three children, who between them have three degrees from Texas Tech— came to Lubbock is unlike any other.

In 2009, TTUHSC was searching for its eighth president through a search process led by thenChancellor Kent Hance.

“Kent enticed my wife and me to move out here by using one of Tech’s most beloved traditions to his advantage,” joked Mitchell. “In recruiting us to Lubbock, he asked me, ‘Tedd, what is it we can do to get you guys to move out to West Texas?’ Before I could answer, he turned to Janet and asked, ‘What can we do?’”

Mitchell and his wife, Janet, daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Ben Schwartz, and sons Chris and Charlie. Both sons are Texas Tech graduates.

It is then, Mitchell says, Tornelli-Mitchell—a prolific e uestrian—told Hance with great confi ence, “I would like to be the Masked Rider for one Texas Tech football game.”

Hance jested and told her he would try to make it happen, so the Mitchell family was on its way to Lubbock. Though she later learned Masked Rider duties can only be fil ed by full-time students, Tornelli-Mitchell committed to her dream and teasingly arrived to a home football game dressed as the Masked Rider, ready to jump into action should she get the green light.

In spite of Tornelli-Mitchell never getting to fulfill er game day wishes, the Mitchells have grown to love Lubbock and the West Texas region. Mitchell says the move to Lubbock was, “one of the greatest opportunities of (his) lifetime—professionally and personally.”

“There is something about West Texas and the people of West Texas that is very endearing,” said Mitchell. “The people across our state are great, but the people of West Texas are outstanding.”

The impact of West Texas is one of the things Mitchell says makes him so proud to assume the role of chancellor, calling it an honor because of what it represents.

“We have a system with four universities with a very unique, very powerful responsibility in West Texas,” said Mitchell. “We have an area of 108 counties—larger than 46 out of the 50 states—that we’re responsible for in many, many ways. That’s our charge and it’s always been our charge—to take care of this region.”

One of Mitchell’s mantras is: “West Texans take care of West Texas, and West Texas takes care of the world.”

“West Texas provides the resources not just for this state, not just for this region, not just for this country, but, in many ways, for this planet,” said Mitchell. “It is the perfect microcosm of everything good that happens around the globe. We have the epicenter of the beef industry up in the Panhandle, we have the epicenter of the fiber i dustry right here in the South Plains and we have the epicenter of the energy industry down in the Permian Basin. We have a lot of folks that rely on the workforce we develop collectively across the TTU System.”

It’s the importance of West Texas that the TTU System and Mitchell are on a mission to serve in the upcoming 86th Texas Legislature, in which the system will pursue priorities for which Mitchell says “failure is not an option.” He has made preparing the universities for a successful legislative session his top priority in his first onths as chancellor.

For TTU, the School of Veterinary Medicine in Amarillo is a major priority going into the legislative session in January. The initiative is borne out of a significant eed for veterinary care in West Texas and the Panhandle region, specifically for t e large animals of the agricultural industries concentrated in the region, and also to address a growing demand for veterinary education in Texas.

“In 1915, the state’s only veterinary school was established, and has grown to become one of the best in the nation,” said Mitchell.

“At that time, there was only one medical school in the state. In 2018, we have 12 medical schools, but still only one vet school. We have a need in West Texas and across our great state that we have got to take care of.”

TTU and TTUHSC, in a joint pursuit, are working to establish the Texas Tech Mental Health Institute.

“We have been marshaling our forces from these two universities to see all the areas we cover to provide for mental health needs,” said Mitchell. “We want to become the resource for people when they have questions about how to get the appropriate care they need. Everyone has been affected by ental health, and adequate mental health care is a major need for our region.”

TTUHSC El Paso, the system’s newest addition since becoming a stand-alone institution in 2013, is establishing the state’s first ental school in over 50 years, the Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine.

“Just like veterinary medicine, we have fallen woefully behind the remainder of the state in terms of the dental care that is available in our region,” said Mitchell. “This is not just about making sure people have a nice smile; dental disease is associated with medical disease over and over again. This is another need for this region we need to address for the overall health of our communities.”

As Mitchell begins to discuss the legislative priorities for ASU, added to the TTU System in 2007, he takes a moment to encourage people to visit the San Angelo campus, calling it “one of the fi est regional universities in the country.”

“We will work in the legislative session to get Angelo State additional student enhancement funding to ensure each student makes the successful transition into higher education and completes their degree,” said Mitchell. “With the university’s record growth and enrollment, we want to be sure the student body has comprehensive support and every resource available to them in order to reach their goals.”

“We have big initiatives at each of our universities as we go into this session; we need all hands on deck,” said Mitchell, adding that he looks forward to TTU System Day at the Capitol in March in order to see alumni and supporters visiting legislators to advocate for these initiatives to “get them across the line.”

As he talks about what lies ahead for the TTU System, it is clear Mitchell is confi ent success is on the horizon. Mitchell has a booming voice and a commanding presence, but it is his determination and steady, composed leadership style that stands out and garners confi ence in the things he says.

Above all else, Mitchell wants all alumni, faculty, staff, researc ers and students to be proud they are a part of the bigger mission and family of the TTU System. It’s clear he’s excited to get to work, and, when listening to him speak about his plans, it’s hard not to be excited with him.

Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine and the 86th Texas Legislative Session

By Tedd Mitchell, Chancellor, Texas Tech University System | President, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Lawrence Schovanec, President, Texas Tech University The beginning of the new year will be an important one for Texas Tech University and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, as the 86th Legislative session convenes in Austin. This is always a critical time for us as public universities; however, we are especially focused on ensuring startup funding for our future School of Veterinary Medicine. The engagement of Red Raiders across the state will be essential as we appeal to the Texas Legislature and convey our innovative solution to address a long-standing need for veterinarians, who are vital to ensuring the safety of our food supply and the livelihood of our economic prosperity.

Texas Tech has submitted a request to the Texas Legislature of $17.35 million to fund startup operations for the state’s second veterinary school--a first in exas in more than 100 years. This is an additional $13.18 million appropriation request coupled with $4.17 million appropriated in 2015. Texas Tech has conducted a feasibility assessment; developed an innovative, cost-effi ent curriculum; designed facilities; consulted with state authorities and accrediting bodies; and secured community and industry support for the School of Veterinary Medicine. Additionally, Texas Tech has secured $90 million in non-state funds for infrastructure costs to build the new facilities.

Texas’ Critical Need Texas has a critical shortage of veterinarians who serve small and agricultural communities and the livestock industry. This critical shortage has been documented by Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) reports in 1971, 2002, 2009 and 2016.

According to the 2016 report, there were roughly 6,600 veterinarians in Texas with the majority of practices serving small animals and only 180 veterinarians serving livestock in rural communities. Additionally, the THECB recommended consideration of an innovative, cost-effi ent, non-duplicative model of veterinary education in 2016. Texas Tech’s School of Veterinary Medicine has responded to the THECB’s report with an innovative model that is distinct for the state’s current veterinary school, yet complementary and will produce graduates to serve rural communities throughout Texas.

In Texas, 74 percent of counties have fewer than 50,000 people. In these counties, more than 40 percent of licensed veterinarians are over the age of 60. By contrast, in urban centers, only 25 percent of veterinarians are over the age of 60.

Last year, more Texas students left the state to pursue their education in veterinary medicine than the number of first- ear seats in Texas. Texas Tech Alumni Association Resolution Regarding Texas Tech School of Veterinary Medicine WHEREAS, we, the Texas Tech Alumni Association Board of Directors, have been closely monitoring the news reports and recent events regarding Texas Tech’s proposal to build the Texas Tech School of Veterinary Medicine in Amarillo, Texas.

WHEREAS, the mission and vision of the Texas Tech Alumni Association includes supporting and fostering the growth of the Texas Tech University System. Specifically, we believe that Texas Tec should achieve its goal of being recognized as one of the top research and public universities in the United States. These goals are not only important for Texas Tech, but for the future of the State of Texas.

WHEREAS, as part of these goals, the Texas Tech University System has sought (over the course of several decades) to build a veterinary school in Amarillo to complement the state’s only veterinary school at Texas A&M and address the critical and worsening shortage of veterinarians to support Texas’s agriculture industry.

WHEREAS, in February 2017, the Texas Tech Alumni Association Board of Directors passed a resolution in support of the veterinary school and was pleased that the Texas Legislature awarded start-up funds for the initiative. Since that time we are proud of the efforts of university officials, o alumni, our friends at other universities, and the great people of Amarillo who have provided $90 million in non-state funds to fund this effort WHEREAS, Red Raiders are Loud and Proud in their support of Texas Tech and West Texas/The Panhandle. Transforming Veterinary Education In 2005, the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada, designed a successful program to address similar needs for veterinarians in rural areas. Under Calgary’s model, 63 percent of graduates in the school’s first 0 years accepted positions in private practices serving rural areas.

Texas Tech adapted its veterinary program from Calgary’s cost-effi ent, innovative model, which is fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. The distinctive curriculum is designed to recruit and train students who have a passion for serving agricultural and small communities. Additionally, the educational model eliminates the need and expense of a traditional teaching hospital by partnering with existing veterinary practices to provide students with more hands-on learning opportunities and lower the cost of education.

Moving Forward The Texas Tech University System Board of Regents approved the establishment of the School of Veterinary Medicine and degree program in August 2018.

Texas Tech has raised $90 million to fund the necessary infrastructure, effe tively leveraging and maximizing the state’s investment.

A New Place to Gather and Celebrate: Frazier Alumni Pavilion Expansion

the Texas Tech Alumni Association broke ground on the Frazier Alumni Pavilion Expansion. The day was sunny and cool as association representatives and many others gathered under a large heated tent on the south patio of the pavilion to celebrate this soon-to-be campus addition.

Master-of-ceremonies Nathan Nash, a 2005 engineering graduate of Texas Tech University and chair of the Texas Tech Alumni Association Frazier Expansion Task Force, introduced the three guest speakers. Tedd L. T HE 2 018 F ORG I N G Futures Golf Classic at Boot Ranch Golf Resort in Fredericksburg raised more than $133,000 to support Texas Tech Hill Country by offering st dent scholarships and program development at the Fredericksburg Hill Country University Center. The FFGC board is looking forward to the second annual Forging Futures Golf Classic April 7 and 8, 2019.

In 2000 the State of Texas addressed the largest underserved population for higher education in Texas by establishing the Texas Tech University regional teaching sites at Fredericksburg and Marble Falls. Through local efforts, t e Fredericksburg campus (Hill Country University Campus) came into existence in 2002. Currently, local students can choose to pursue multiple associate’s, six bachelor’s, four master’s degrees and even a doctor of education degree in Educational Leadership at Hill Country University Center (HCUC) while enjoying affordab e education and at the same time, continuing their employment and family obligations.

When in 2016 state funding for the TTU Teaching Site in the Hill Country was reduced, a group of entrepreneurial Red Raiders and others committed to higher education proposed a premier charity golf event to provide scholarships for deserving students and to defray operating costs for TTU/ Fredericksburg and HCUC. This premier event was designed to attract golfers and non-golfers to open their hearts and wallets to support local students, the campus and efforts to enha ce higher educational opportunities. Two Texas Tech Alumni, Tom Hutton, M.D., Ph.D., and Bob Bates, gathered a Core Team of competent and dedicated workers to organize this effort. This gr up became the Forging Futures Coalition.

The site selected for the golf tournament was the exclusive, private Boot Ranch Golf Course, rated as the eighth best course in Texas and earlier winner of best new course in Texas. Through the generous help of personnel at Boot Ranch and a dedicated Core Team, the Forging Futures Charity Golf Tournament came into existence. This name reflects t e coalition’s desire to help to forge successful futures for aspiring students.

The success of the 2018 inaugural event created an even stronger desire to continue and possibly expand this fundraiser. The second Forging Futures Golf Classic will be held April 7 and 8, 2019. A Celebration Dinner and auction will be held at the fabulous European-inspired and recently constructed Altstadt Brewery on Sunday, April 7, followed on Monday, April 8, by 18 holes of incredibly scenic and exciting golf in a scramble format at the award-winning Boot Ranch Golf Course.

1964 JOE M. MCMILLAN III (BS Civil Engineering) Arvada, Colorado, was honored with the Fred A. and Jane R. Stindt Photography Award from the Railroad Locomotive and Historical Society along with his close friend Steve Patterson. Joe has made several appearances on the railroad slide-show circuit and has presented at the annual “Conversations” symposium of the Center for Railroad Photography and Art. He joined the Santa Fe Railway upon graduating from Texas Tech, first working as a draftsman for the Eastern Lines chief engineer in Topeka. His career later led him to the safety end of the business. Joe is a renowned author and photographer in the railroad publishing and photography business. He has written and published several books on the Santa Fe Railway. Joe retired as the assistant director of safety and rules in 1995. His wife is NICKIE W. MCMILLAN ’63 (BS Cloth, Textile and Merchandising, BS Home Economics Education).

When Griff was diagnosed with Multi le Sclerosis during his education at Texas Tech, Hunter established a non-profit racing team called Carney Men to raise money to fi d a cure for MS and help improve the lives of those living with the disorder. Carney Men is now the largest private non-profit c cling team in the U.S. The team has raised more than $1 million for MS research to date.

SPERM COLLECTION DEVICE IS A SWIMMING SUCCESS In the U.S., there are currently 7 million couples seeking reproduction assistance, and over the last four decades male fertility worldwide has dropped 60 percent.

Reproductive Solutions, Inc. (RSI) is a bioscience company which produces ProteX, a medical device used by fertility clinics to improve collection of human semen among couples seeking assisted-reproduction procedures. Currently, standard practice requires male semen to be collected in a clinic via a common specimen cup. ProteX improves upon the design of the specimen cups to help increase the viability of semen collected.

RSI came to the Innovation Hub when John Smothers, president and CEO of RSI, originally was looking to serve as a mentor to startup companies. During his interview process, it was suggested RSI compete in the 2017 iLaunch Competition instead. The team decided to enter and eventually went on to win second place in the competition. The momentum inspired them to get more involved in the programs at the Innovation Hub. The founding team’s startup journey included a new intellectual property strategy and FDA development strategy. The technology was developed by Dr. Sam Prien, who holds a joint appointment at both TTU (Department of Animal and Food Sciences) and TTUHSC (Department

of Obstetrics and Gynecology), and his former graduate student, Dr. Dustie Johnson, co-founder of RSI, when she was a student in the Department of Animal and Food Sciences. The team decided to enter the Texas Tech Accelerator program with the hopes it could assist them with the strategy, and they were successful. Additional intellectual property is in development and the semen cup and company are off to the races!

The ProteX medical device is similar in shape and size to a standard specimen cup, but it features two components, an insulating outer shell and a conical shaped insert that funnels the semen collected into a small holding well. This design creates an environment that protects samples from damaging temperature changes and many other factors that cause a sample to degrade.

Smothers said the significantly higher viability of semen can help couples find success in fewer rounds of In vitro fertilization cycles or result in the ability to try lower-cost procedures like intrauterine insemination.

“In the clinical trials we did, the ProteX provides a 40 percent stronger or better sample than traditional methods,” Smothers said.

He added that in the clinical trials, instances of conception achieved while using a specimen cup went to full-term, healthy deliveries in 40 percent of cases.

ProteX’s first rollout shipped to the 38 fertility clinics across Texas on Oct. 15, 2018. Smothers said he and his team are interested to see how quickly word of the product spreads.

The Texas Tech Alumni Association is asking all alumni and friends of Texas Tech University to be part of the $6 million Building on Tradition Capital Campaign to expand the Frazier Alumni Pavilion.

In 1997, the Texas Tech Alumni Association broke ground on a spectacular addition to the Texas Tech campus, the Frazier Alumni Pavilion. Named after David P. Frazier ’73 and his father, George H. Frazier, this 10,000-square-foot all-weather facility has become a home away from home on game days. The Daily Toreador’s former photo editor, JUSTIN REX, received honorable mention in the ACP 2018 Design of the Year/ Newspaper Page One contest. Rex is a graduate student in the College of Media & Communication.

The DT website was a finalist for t e Associated Collegiate Press’ Online Pacemaker, while the print edition has been tapped for the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Crown Award. MCKENZI MORRIS , who also is a graduate student in the College of Media & Communication, is editor-in-chief for The DT. The “La Ventana” won its second consecutive Pacemaker for the 2017 yearbook. DAVIAN HOPKINS , a senior graphic design and creative media industries major, was editor-in-chief of the 2017 “La Ventana.”

Pacemaker winners were announced at the College Media Association convention in October in Louisville, Kentucky.

THE TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY SOILS JUDGING TEAM PLACED SECOND AT THE REGION 4 COLLEGIATE SOILS CONTEST IN STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA, THIS MONTH, AND EARNED A SPOT IN THE NATIONAL COMPETITION TO BE HELD AT CALIFORNIA POLYTECHNIC STATE UNIVERSITY IN SAN LUIS OBISPO NEXT SPRING. Three members of the team finis ed among the top fi e individuals at the contest. BRYANNA EDWARDS , a microbiology and plant and soil sciences major, placed second in the individual competition. MARIAH MESA , a plant and soil sciences major, was third high individual. SARAH PENNINGTON , an agribusiness major, placed fourth individuals. Region 4 includes colleges and universities from Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas. About 28 individuals comprising six teams competed.

FOR THE FIRST TIME, THE TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY FINANCIAL PLANNING ASSOCIATION ® HAS WON FIRST PLACE THE AMERICAN EXPRESS PLANNING INVITATIONAL. The team was made up of BLANE HEFLIN, JACOB GUROCK and DIMITRIAN JIMENEZ . As the first- lace finis er, Texas Tech receives a $10,000 scholarship from the Certifie Financial Planners Board, one of the competition’s sponsors.

Individual team members also will receive one hour of career coaching from Caleb Brown at New Planner Recruiting, the leading recruiting firm for ent y-level fina cial planners, and a full scholarship to the FPA’s highly acclaimed Residency Program.

In February 1999, a meeting between Texas Tech University’s Personal Financial Planning faculty and American Express executives resulted in the creation of a fina cial planning competition. That year, the Texas Tech Family Financial Planning Team placed second. Since then, the Texas Tech team has usually been among the eight top teams.
