A Tribute and Other Thoughts $4.1 million in the state budget for start-up funding for a new vet school at Texas Tech. Tech regents earlier put the vet school plan “on pause.”

But thanks to the efforts of Sen. Charles Perry, R-Lubbock; Rep. Dustin Burrows, R-Lubbock; Rep. John Frullo, R-Lubbock and Rep. John Smithee, R-Amarillo, the money was left in the approved state budget.

In a joint statement, these legislators said, “Rural Texas depends on agriculture as an economic driver, and the lack of large-animal veterinarians in Texas can have a devastating effect on our communities. The inclusion of $4.1 million in the state budget to establish a veterinary school at Texas Tech University will go a long way in addressing this need.”

A&M System Chancellor John Sharp issued the following statement: ”My congratulations to Sen. Charles Perry for getting it in the appropriations bill. The Coordinating Board study was against it. Even the Tech board opposed it. But he came in ‘guns up’ and got it for Tech.”

Translation: “I can’t believe you got the damn thing put in the budget.”

I WAS S A DDEN ED, but not shocked, to learn of Rip Griffin’s passing in June. I could tell when I visited with him earlier this spring his quality of life was not good. It is hard but probably a blessing because he has a new body now.

He was Mr. Baseball in Lubbock, and it is fitting that Tech’s baseball facility is named for him. Goodness knows he gave tremendous support to the program through the years.

Rip and I developed a close relationship over the years, probably because we both loved baseball. I coached both of his sons, David and Mark, in American Legion baseball, and he and I worked on many baseball projects over the years. Rip was never one to withhold his feelings. He was “old school” baseball, and he wanted to win. We shared similar characteristics.

The news releases say it all about his contributions to Lubbock Christian University, Texas Tech and Lubbock. He was extremely generous and very passionate about things he loved. His legacy will live on forever. We need more individuals like him.

God rest his soul.

S PEA K I N G OF BA S EBA LL, Tim Tadlock, Tech’s highly successful head baseball coach, has created a major problem for himself.

Our fans expect that we are going to win every game we play.

His team tied TCU for the Big 12 championship this year after winning it outright last year.

Losing to Sam Houston in the regionals was a huge disappointment to Tim and his players, but especially upsetting to our fans. They fully expected to win the regional, the super regional and proceed to the College World Series for the second year in a row.

It didn’t happen, so fans are questioning “why we did this, why we did that,” etc. The fact is that Sam Houston outplayed us and won. So now we have to wait until next year, when expectations will be extremely high again. My guess is Tadlock & Co. wouldn’t have it any other way.

DU R I N G A N I N T E RV I E W on May 19, on the syndicated “Rick & Bubba Show,” former Tech Coach Tommy Tuberville, perhaps trying to be funny, took a shot at Lubbock.

“You run me off at Auburn, and you ship me to Lubbock, Texas,” Tuberville said after playing a round in the Regions Tradition Celebrity Pro Am golf tournament. “I’m going to tell you what, that’s like going to Siberia. Somebody asked me, ‘What’s Lubbock look like?’ It looked like Iraq.”

I teach a course in public relations and, at the beginning of every semester, I tell students to be on the lookout for public officials or public figures who say things they later wish they hadn’t said.

This is a great example. Tuberville was not shipped off to Texas Tech. Unless I am mistaken, he was out of a job and applied rather aggressively for our head coaching position.

There was no need for him to make these comments. Later, he called in to the Lubbock-based “Thetford & Ashby” sports talk show and apologized.

Personally, I liked Tuberville. He followed Mike Leach, which was not easy. His sudden departure to Cincinnati was bit of a shock, but most people figured he just moved on to greener pastures.

Later in the “Thetford & Ashby” interview, he did say that the people here are among the finest he has ever met.

Tuberville became the second head coach in Texas Tech football history to win a bowl game in his first season. At the beginning of his first year at Texas Tech, season ticket sales increased from the previous record of 30,092 to 46,546.

Additionally, Tuberville is responsible for the highest-rated recruiting class in Texas Tech history, securing the 18th-ranked recruiting class in 2011, according to Rivals.com, and the 14th best in the country, according to Scout.com.

Then there was the infamous dispute with a graduate assistant where Tuberville knocked the assistant’s hat and headset to the ground during a Nov. 10, 2012, game. He later apologized.

Tuberville was never really embraced by a strong element of our fan base that remained upset over Leach’s ouster. Tuberville left Texas Tech with an overall record of 20–17 and 9–17 in Big 12 conference play. He went 8-5 (3-5) (Ticket City Bowl), 5-7 (2-7) and 7-5 (4-5) (Meineke Car Care Bowl). However, he has provided me with a good example to start off the fall semester in “Principles of Public Relations.”

HEALTH (TIEHH) AT TEXAS TECH AND DIRECTOR OF THE BIOLOGICAL THREAT RESEARCH LAB, LAUNCHED A STATEWIDE RESEARCH PROJECT FUNDED BY A $200,000 PUBLIC HEALTH GRANT FROM THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF STATE HEALTH SERVICES. Presley and his team will compare the effectiveness of insecticides used throughout the state against the two mosquito species Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus that transmit Zika virus and other diseases. Researchers will then determine whether the species have developed resistance to the insecticides used to control them in 48 Texas counties, ranging from Amarillo to Brownsville and El Paso to Port Arthur.

THE COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES HONORED FOUR DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AT TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY’S INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL CENTER MAY 4. The College of Arts & Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award goes to individuals who show mutual respect, cooperation, communication, creativity, innovation, community service, leadership, pursuit of excellence, public accountability and diversity.

This year’s recipients are: KATHLEEN CAMPBELL-WALKER (BA ’82 History) who is one of the nation’s foremost experts on immigration issues and currently serves as chairman of the Board of the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce. In addition serving many honorable roles, including being selected to serve on the Council of Foreign Relations’ Independent Task Force on U.S. Immigration Policy, she has also testified multiple times on border security and immigration policy at a state and national level.

PATRICK “PAT” GREEN (BGS ’97 General Studies) began his music career as an 18-year-old at Texas Tech playing small gigs in bars around Lubbock.

After independently recording and releasing a series of albums produced

by Lloyd Maines, and appearing at the 1998 Willie Nelson Fourth of July Picnic, Green was well on his way to nationwide recognition. Soon, he was playing sold-out shows. Green has sold more than 250,000 albums without being signed by a major label. His highest peaking single is “Wave on Wave,” from his gold-certified album of the same name. O. WAYNE ISOM, M.D. (BS ’61 Chemistry) is currently the Terry Allen Kramer Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center. Under his supervision, the cardiothoracic surgeons performed over 40,000 open-heart procedures, with results ranking the center as one of the best programs in the country. Over his 50-year career, Isom has been responsible for teaching third-year medical students, as well as general surgery house staff. He has also been instrumental in training more than 80 cardiothoracic surgeons who are now either practicing or teaching throughout the country. NELDA LANEY , 1943-2016 (BS ’65 Speech), was a lifelong supporter of Texas Tech. She served the university in numerous roles including National President of the Texas Tech Alumni Association and chair of the Merket Alumni Center expansion. Her work spanned across Texas as she served on several boards such as The Texas Book Festival, Friends of Texas Library and Archives, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and Greater Texas Community Partners. She was the recipient of the Star of Texas Preservation Award for Capitol Restoration has been named Woman of the Year twice, was inducted into the Future Homemakers of America Texas Hall of Fame, and honored as a Lifetime Member of the Girl Scouts.

FORMER TEXAS TECH CHANCELLOR KENT R. HANCE ANNOUNCED THE OPENING OF HANCE SCARBOROUGH, LLP’S WASHINGTON D.C. OFFICE. Hance founded the firm in 1994. Along with its representation of clients before the Texas Legislature, the firm has been representing clients at the federal level for many years. David Pore ’98, a Texas Tech School of Law graduate, will lead the office.

NEWS ON APRIL 25, TEXAS TECH ANNOUNCED THE CREATION OF ITS NEW INSTITUTE FOR PEACE AND CONFLICT (IPAC). The institute draws from Texas Tech’s world-renowned Vietnam Center & Archive, the graduate certificate in strategic studies directed by Col. Dave Lewis (Ret.), the Army, and Air Force ROTC programs, as well as the newly created Archive of Modern American Warfare, which deals with all wars since 1975. Texas Tech is established as the preeminent place to study the Vietnam War, and founders of IPAC plan to look toward the future and establish the university as the place to study not only conflict but the resolution of conflict.

When people think of a Renaissance man, they usually think of someone who is both right and left-brained, who is analytical and skilled at math and science, yet possesses impressive talents in the arts—languages, music and design, drawing, painting and sculpting.

Leonardo DaVinci, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin are prime examples of Renaissance men. They loved mathematics and writing. They also relished the process of creating, using both science and the fine arts.

People of that caliber, who have that broad variety of interests and talents, still exist today. In fact, Dan Atcheson could be considered a modern Renaissance man. The author of seven books and co-author of four more on the construction field with more than 200,000 books sold, he has taught construction cost-estimating at Texas Tech University. A musician, he has played and recorded with popular West Texas musical groups. He is a renowned sculptor. You also could consider him somewhat of a statesman, as he enjoys taking his beloved pet English bulldogs to community events and special programs to promote goodwill and pet rescue.

The 1969 Texas Tech University graduate has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a minor in geology.

He also loves science so much that he amassed 77 hours of science in college.

Lubbock native Atcheson grew up in a household where education was greatly valued. Both of his parents graduated from Texas Tech. His dad, James E. Atcheson ’36, was a successful architect, and his mother, Lucille

DAN Heggen Atcheson ’45, was a musician. Dan did well in math in school and showed an aptitude for music. He once thought he might follow his father into architecture but decided he didn’t share his dad’s passion or talent for it.

“My freshman year at Texas Tech, I got through Calculus 1 and 2 and made good grades,” he says. “I also discovered what a powerful tool it was. I considered some engineering fields but realized I’d be a junior before I actually knew what any program was about. With two math courses behind me, I decided on math because it could be applied to many fields. I also loved geology and made that my minor.”

Post-graduation, Atcheson worked for Southwestern Bell as a dial service supervisor. He came up with some ideas that impressed his bosses.

However, the job made him realize management in Corporate America was not for him. He was later hired by a construction company where the owner taught him how to cost-estimate construction jobs.

Strong math skills and an interest in construction made the field the perfect fit for him. During the decades that he was a cost estimator, he consulted for construction companies in many states as well as Sweden, Australia, Mexico and England that needed cost-estimating for their projects.

In fact, his knowledge of construction costs and his skills led him to be asked to serve as an expert witness for construction lawsuits, including the well-known arson case of the New West nightclub in Lubbock.

“One day in 1977, knowing that you sometimes have to create your own opportunities in life, I invited Dr. Fred Wagner, head of the construction engineering technology department at Texas Tech, to lunch at Hilltop Barbecue. During lunch, I said, ‘Dr. Wagner, if your department ever offers a class in construction cost-estimating, I would be interested in teaching it.’ About a month or so later, I received a phone call from Professor Al Sanger, inviting me to interview for a position teaching cost-estimating.”

He went to the interview and was hired.

“Becoming a writer of construction books happened by accident,” he says.

“Being a part-time instructor at Tech, I had summers off. During my first summer, I decided to refine my class notes, starting at the start—earthwork.

Right away, I realized how little was written about the subject, and I found many errors in the existing literature. It turned into a successful book titled ‘Estimating Earthwork Quantities.’

“I lost two girlfriends while I was writing it,” he says. “I suppose they got tired of my breaking dates because I was trying to create an equation. It wasn’t an easy subject to write about. I had to derive equations that never existed before. One took more than a month to derive.”

Yet another example of Atcheson’s being a Renaissance man is his use of math in his books. He has applied algebra; calculus, including triple integration; differential equations; trigonometry and matrix theory to solve problems presented in his books.

Atcheson employs his artistic abilities in his books by drawing many of his own examples. He also takes many photos for each book. For illustrations, he sometimes uses other sources, but he has to gain permission to incorporate them into his own work and then research them to be certain they are correct and sound examples for his book.

“At first, it was thrilling to realize I was an official author, but over the years, it has become a way to make a living. Now, I’m tired of it. Keep in

mind that I started in the early ’80s, and I’ve written every book I can on the subject that’s marketable.

“Writing can be very stressful. In late December 2005, I was given a deadline on a new cost book about masonry/ concrete of late June 2006. A cost book is a book with material and labor prices for the current year that has to be updated each year thereafter, so I worked 10 hours a day, seven days a week for six months to get it accomplished. I called it ‘the year that wasn’t,’ because I worked through Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and during the Super Bowl.

The book ended up being 605 pages long.”

His textbooks also have been required reading for state license exams in at least 20 states..

“I’m currently working on a book about growing up in Lubbock in the ’50s and ’60s,” he says. “I love and miss the city, the people and the South Plains terribly.”

In 1986, the Texas Tech department where he taught terminated all part-time instructors in order to save money. Within a month, during a phone conversation with a man in Florida ordering one of his books, Atcheson received a job offer to travel throughout the country giving seminars about cost-estimating. He took the job and ended up settling in Venice, Florida. He eventually went to work for a company in Sarasota that sold earthwork and general estimating software. He became the company’s earthwork guru and was known to hundreds of clients as “Dr. Dirt.”

Enter Dan Atcheson, the musician.

“Mom got a music degree from Texas Tech and taught piano lessons,” he says. “She could have been a concert pianist were it not for caring for her family. I’d give almost anything to hear her play again. She taught all of her kids to play. I recall her often scolding me for not reading the music but playing by ear. I was born with relative pitch.

That is, if you place the note C, I can tell you what any note is you play after that. None of us boys was interested in the piano. Mom finally resorted to paying us to practice, On a job site.

but that didn’t work out very well. I recall a day she broke down and cried, saying, ‘My boys will never be musicians!’

“Then rock music made the scene in the 1950s. Mom wouldn’t allow us play it on the radio, so we’d run to the car after church and listen before the folks got to the car. When we heard a Jerry Lee Lewis song, we talked about how much fun it would be to play that kind of music. The folks bought us a standard guitar, and we got hooked. That was later followed by electric guitars and amplifiers.

Seventeen years later, Mom said, ‘Don’t you think it’s time to retire from the music business?’

“In 1959, I played guitar in my first group, The Twilites, but my older brother played with The Velveteens, a more established group. When their drummer joined the Army and left his drums at our house, I practiced drums eight hours a day for two weeks and landed a place with the group. After we got a record contract with RCA Victor, they suggested we change the name to The Traveling Salesmen. At this point in time, I was a bass player. I had to quit the band when I moved to Houston to work for Bell Telephone.”

Atcheson returned to Lubbock 1971 and picked up his music career. He had played trombone at J.T. Hutchinson Junior High in Lubbock and began playing it again with The Traveling Salesmen. In 1977, the group disbanded, and he went into country & western music, playing at the Palm Room on the Idalou Highway for eight more years. After moving to Venice, Florida, in 1990, he played drums in a church orchestra. Then he retired and donated his drums to a local humane society and gave his guitar and bass to his grandchildren.

However, music will always be in his blood, he says.

“During my music career, I also worked full-time jobs, including being a math teacher at Carroll Thompson Junior High School where I became lifelong friends with Gene Williamson, the principal,” he says. “Gene and his wife, Jan, both Tech graduates, honored me by naming me their honorary son after their son, Ronald (Ronnie) passed away in 2010.”

He attributes his own happiness and success to God, his family and especially to his daughter, Tami, whom he calls his best friend.

Writing poetry and fiction was a natural evolution for the author of so many books. He began writing poems about a favorite topic, his love of English bulldogs. One of his poems, “Do Dogs Go To Heaven?” has become famous among many pet bereavement websites. He encountered and owned his first English bulldog, Beethoven, when he saw him at the pound in Sarasota, Florida, near his home in Venice. He said he felt sorry for the dog and took him home. The adoption sparked a love affair with the breed, and Atcheson has owned seven more since then, including five rescue dogs. (He also loves cats and always has owned one.)

He says bulldogs are so endearing because they are “loving, gentle and courageous and normally very good with children.”

“They also have comical-looking mugs and expressions— they’re just little children dressed up in dog’s clothes,” he adds.

Atcheson gladly shares his wrinkly-faced fur-children with the community and special-needs groups. He and his canine kids often attend Venice, Florida, civic events, spreading goodwill.

One dog, Baby, was featured in a half-page photo in The New York Times in 2003. He was also a guest-of-honor three times during his lifetime, including a presentation at Veterans Day in Venice in 2003 and a Make-A-Wish Foundation show in Weeki Wachee Springs, Florida, in 2006. He had his photo taken with the Venice City Council as well as the Sarasota County Commissioners. He became one of the most well-known bulldogs in the world.

The bulldogs have found their way into yet another great interest of his—sculpting. He has sculpted numerous bulldogs, as well as everything and everyone from a shark to “The Last Supper,” the “Pietà” and Raider Red. He sculpts in many different media, all types of wood and stone. He taught wood carving classes in Sarasota and Venice for several years in the early 1990s. He’s carved so many projects, visitors to his home comment that it looks more like a sculpture museum than a home.

Once again, Atcheson discovered this special talent, almost accidentally.

“In 1984, the first day after New Year’s Day, I got a wild hair and thought, ‘There’s something I’d like to try,’ so I went to a craft store in Monterey Shopping Center and bought a small block of wood, knife and gouge,” he says. “My first carving was a Madonna that turned out much better than I expected, so I bought more wood and tools. I fell in love with the craft, and I’ve carved ever since. Even when I cut myself and bandaged up as best I could, I wouldn’t stop carving, unless I was soiling the work with blood.

“It’s funny. They gave aptitude tests at school when I was in the first grade, and I really flunked one of them. My teacher explained that it showed that I wouldn’t be good as an architect or in any projects involving three dimensions.”

Looking back on his life and all he has accomplished, Atcheson notes that an especially proud time was when his father drew all the illustrations for his first construction book, which was about earthwork. Working with his father was a highlight for Dan, but the pride his father felt about the project was even better.

“Keep in mind that Dad was in his mid-’70s and suffering from glaucoma when he illustrated my book,” Dan says. “One night, while we were celebrating the second printing of the book, my dad said, ‘Working with you on this project is the crowning jewel in my list of life’s achievements.’

“That made me so happy,” Dan says. “The book went through four more printings after that and sold to customers in every country of the free world, including several universities that used it as a textbook.”

Despite his great intelligence and many talents, Atcheson remains humble and grateful for his gifts. He attributes his own happiness and success to God, his family and especially to his daughter, Tami, whom he calls his best friend. Tami has two children, Sophie and Cole Painter, whom he adores.

Atcheson has dedicated his best-selling book, “Roofing, Constructing & Estimating” to his daughter and grandchildren. Also in the dedication, he includes the line: “And to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave me eyes to see, hands to type and mind to think.”

Light be

on the Texas Tech University Campus The Texas Tech University campus is one of the most beautiful in the United States. Its carefully planned and executed Spanish Renaissance architecture, part of campus architect William Ward Watkin’s vision for the new West Texas school, remains in place today. New construction maintains the consistency and integrity of the original plan.

One thing Watkin could not possibly have predicted is how the campus would look at night all these years later. As times have changed in the 94 years since Watkin’s master plan was enacted, night-time campus activity has increased each decade. Classes and activities extending to after dark are the norm in the 21st Century. In fact, some of the most beloved traditions such as the Homecoming Bonfire, the holiday-time Carol of Lights and other events are staged around the campus at night.

Everyone who ventures onto the campus in daylight knows the place in one way, but by night, it is almost like another realm. Even if it’s not the holidays or time for a special event, the lights at Texas Tech University glow brightly every night.

The

Family Table

This is the story of three famous, much-loved Texas restaurant concepts: Bubba’s, Babe’s Chicken Dinner House and Sweetie Pie’s Ribeyes…and the Red Raider family that created them.

On a warm spring Sunday 60-some-odd years ago in a small West Texas town, a rare gentle breeze tickled the fresh, still-tiny jade-hued leaves budding on the cottonwood and elm trees that shaded the old clapboard farmhouse. A robin lit on a branch, observed the well-worn home and bustling goings-on around it, and contemplated where to build a cozy nest for her impending brood. Bright sunshine warmed a small group of kids playing—siblings and cousins, giddy to finally be out of church, anticipating their weekly family dinner being prepared inside.

Those long-ago dinners are the brightest jewels in the memories of those now-grown kids.

Decades after the farm was sold and the grandparents were buried, when all that’s left of childhood are memories, it’s the realization that food was the center of so many joyful times.

Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, biscuits and gravy, all made from scratch by small, sun-aged hands that hung laundry on a line to dry, that sometimes helped hoe cotton, that swatted bottoms and gently combed unruly hair, that darned socks and replaced buttons, that created treasured needlepoints and, best of all, hands that loved unconditionally, always offering a tender squeeze for the little ones, and sometimes the bigger ones, too.

WHERE THE HEART IS Paul Vinyard grew up calling West Texas home, where his family and friends called him “Bubba.” Paul is the founder and part owner (along with his two children, alumni Joel Vinyard and Tiffany Vinyard Wheeless) of three wildly successful Metroplex restaurant concepts: Bubba’s, Babe’s Chicken Dinner House and Sweetie Pie’s Ribeyes. All of the eateries offer home-cooked style meals.

“My family farmed in Turkey,” says Paul, who was the oldest of five children. “My dad (Wren Vinyard, BS ’46 Agricultural Education) was a World War II veteran. In addition to farming, he was a salesman for Paymaster feeds.”

Paul says his father’s sales job necessitated the family’s moving several times throughout his childhood, but he never quit calling Turkey, Texas home.

“I attended junior high in Littlefield, and in ninth grade, we moved to Abilene,” he explains. “But no matter where I lived, I always felt attached to West Texas.”

While living in Littlefield he met a young woman with whom he’d later share much of his adult life.

“I met Mary Beth (Boswell) when we were in sixth grade in Littlefield,” Paul says. “Her father was a Methodist minister and her family moved around West Texas during her childhood as well. Years later, at the end of my freshman year at Tech, I was set up on a blind date with her.”

Paul’s family still lived in Abilene, and Mary Beth was attending McMurry College in Abilene. Paul remembered who she was when he heard her name, but asked his friend who set them up to keep his name under wraps.

“So we went on the date, and I asked all kinds of questions about her family—I remembered all their names,” Paul recalls, laughing. “She could not figure out how I knew all that I knew.”

Paul and Mary Beth’s similar backgrounds—devoutly Christian West Texans whose families moved often as children—sparked immediate attraction, and ultimately adoration, love and a deep friendship. They married in January 1964, and Mary Beth—or as Paul called her, Babe— moved to Lubbock so Paul could complete his degree.

BUILDING EXPERIENCE Paul’s first job upon graduating was with Taco Bueno.

He used his business degree and restaurant experience to land a job with Casa Bonita Restaurants Inc. in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma—through the years his family moved from Tulsa to Denver then Dallas.

“That company consisted of Casa Bonita Dinner Houses, Taco Bueno fast food and Crystal’s Pizza and Spaghetti,” Paul says. “I left 13 years later as president and we had opened 52 restaurants in four states.”

While Paul worked for Casa Bonita, the company acquired a consulting agreement to build fast food restaurants in Mexico City. He says the objective was to use Taco Bueno’s systems of food delivery and management with their local recipes.

“I headed up this effort (in Mexico) and spent the better part of a year there,” he says. “It was like another job since I reported to top management of Cerveceria Cuauhtémoc—they’re the brewers of Carta Blanca and Tecate Beers, also.”

In 1981, after working for Casa Bonita and living in Dallas’ University Park, Paul and his wife Mary Beth opened their own restaurant called Bubba’s “Cooks Country.” For long-time Dallasites, Bubba’s is an institution. Located on Hillcrest near Southern Methodist University, the eatery is a former Texaco service station—built in 1927—that’s been converted to an Art Deco styled restaurant. Patrons order from a walk-up counter or via a drive-thru.

Bubba’s was a major departure from Mexican and Italian food—what was similar, though, is it was still comfort food, just from a different culture. Paul says he and his wife dearly missed the food they were raised on: fried chicken, fried catfish, biscuits, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, green beans, coleslaw and the like. The food at Bubba’s—which offers 11 different vegetables as well as coleslaw and ambrosia—has always been created using family recipes, mostly from Paul’s mother. Bubba’s wild success proved Paul and Mary Beth weren’t the only Texans who missed home cooking.

“Bubba’s was so successful it was initially challenging,” says Paul. “We had two cash registers on the front counter going as fast as they could go, and the drive-thru was always so busy, the layout of the street had to be changed to accommodate all the traffic.”

A few years after Bubba’s was opened, in 1983, Paul went to work for El Chico Restaurants in Dallas as director of operations.

“We had 96 restaurants in 12 states and were a publicly traded company,” he says. “In 1989, I became president.”

By 1992 Paul was ready to roll out a new restaurant concept he’d been contemplating for several years.

FAMILY STYLE Paul left El Chico to develop Babe’s—Paul’s favorite nickname for Mary Beth—and opened the first location in Roanoke, Texas, in 1993. By the time they had Babe’s Chicken Dinner House rolling, both of their children, Joel and Tiffany, were grown. Joel graduated from Texas Tech in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in business management, and Tiffany graduated in 1994 with the same degree. Paul’s brother, Joe Vinyard ’76 (BBA Marketing), is the supervisor for Sweetie Pie’s Ribeyes as well as Antique Lumber Co. “Neither of us planned to come back to the family business,” says Joel. “We wanted to make our own way.”

And they both did. Joel worked for the Richards Group in Dallas, then a software company, also in Dallas, and finally with Match.com in San Francisco. In 2001 he decided to delve into the family businesses.

“I started out working at Bubba’s,” says Joel. “I worked 2:00 p.m. to close every day. It was a tough transition because I was making a third of what I made with my previous salary and, at the time, my wife was pregnant.”

Joel eventually transitioned to Babe’s, where he moved up through the ranks, starting out as a kitchen manager. Today he’s president, but a president who knows everything his employees deal with because he’s been there.

After graduating from Tech in ’94, Tiffany worked for Yellow Rose Touring & Special Events in Dallas, and SEI Meetings & Incentives in Las Colinas as an event planner. She spent 2000 through 2002 as a missionary in Japan, where she taught English and Bible classes.

“I was 29 years old when I left; I’d never lived so far from family” says Tiffany. “I felt called to go there. I felt I needed to cut the apron strings. I thought, ‘I need to go do this.’ It was hard, sometimes I was lonely, being a Texas girl at heart, but it was a great experience for me. At the end of my second year there, my Dad asked me to come home to start a catering side for Babe’s.”

Tiffany started the Babe’s catering business from scratch.

“Initially I wanted it to be as big as one of our restaurants,” she explains. “But it has far surpassed that. We have 26 vans and six catering managers.”

A couple years into working with their parents, both Joel and Tiffany decided they loved their work. Hard work is in Joel and Tiffany’s DNA. Both kids started working at a young age. Tiffany was 10 years old when she started cashiering at Bubba’s, and both kids helped in the restaurant and had jobs at a dry cleaner as young teenagers. Joel says they both tagged along with their father to business meetings, where they learned by listening, but mostly by watching the examples set by their father and mother. What they learned was more than the financials and logistics of running a restaurant business, it was the Christian ideal: The Golden Rule.

THE SECRET RECIPE FOR “BRING ’EM BACK” Employees at every Vinyard establishment are taught to endeavor to “Bring ’Em Back.” From the front of every store back to the kitchen, employees are trained to give customers a superior experience. Paul, Joel and Tiffany note that, for many of their employees, it’s their first job. They ensure, through their managers, that wait staff, hosts and hostesses are trained to notice details: are drinks full, are the customers pleased with their food, do they need more food, or napkins or biscuits or tea? Paul says it’s the great food that keeps people coming back, but customers recognize and appreciate the attention to detail—from service to food—it’s top-notch.

There are Babe’s located in the following towns: Arlington, Burleson, Carrollton, Cedar Hill, Frisco, Garland, Granbury, Roanoke and Sanger. Sweetie Pie’s Ribeyes is on the square in Decatur, and, as mentioned previously, there’s the original Bubba’s “Cooks Country” in Dallas near the SMU campus. A Babe’s is being constructed alongside a Sweetie Pie’s in North Richland Hills.

If you’ve never dined at Bubba’s or Babe’s or Sweetie Pie’s, you might ask, what’s so special about these places? Why is there a belly-to-butt line out the door of loyal patrons waiting to get into a Vinyard establishment? There are several reasons.

There’s a sense of place, like you’re bellied up to a table at your granny’s house. The tables don’t match. The chairs don’t match.

Heck, the dishes don’t match. There are signs on the walls with funny country sayings. Over the years, while searching for reclaimed wood and metal and doors and decorations, the Vinyards finally decided to source their own rustic building supplies and created Antique Lumber Co., based in Gainesville, Texas. So, all the wood and metal in most Babe’s doesn’t just look old, it is old.

“So far, Frisco is the only store we’ve built from scratch,” says Paul. “It was tough, but we tore down barns all over North Texas and Southwest Oklahoma, and we tore down more than 150 houses.

We now sell a lot of used lumber (through Antique Lumber Co.). We tore down an old school in Gainesville that was built in the ’30s out of pavers. We’re building the new Babe’s totally out of that brick, the roof is from old barns and so are the timbers. Sweetie Pie’s (in North Richland Hills) will look like an old gin on the outside. It’s the most creative thing we’ve done and it’s been exciting to build.”

The design is spot-on for a rustic country feel. It’s relaxing to be enveloped in one of their restaurants, but the truly amazing thing is, of course, the food.

It’s fantastic. It’s like, well, sorry to say it again, but, like the best granny’s cooking every single time, at every single store. Joel pointed out to me while we were dining at their Frisco location, that they are very particular about the quality of their food.

“We are perfectionists when it comes to our food,” says Joel. “We specify the brands and ingredients and insist on the same products day after day. Our chicken is fresh, never frozen. It gets here in one day and is marinated for 24 hours, then prepared in small batches.”

Tiffany notes, like her father did, that Mary Beth (who passed away in 2008) became a fantastic cook. She perfected recipes passed down from Paul’s mother and perfected a few of her own. And in

their family tradition, they don’t skimp on the good stuff.

“Our honey comes from Llano, Texas, and it’s so good,” says Tiffany. “The Slaton Bakery brought samples of their vanilla wafers to our Carrollton store. We tried them out in our banana pudding and it made it so much better. We use the same brand of ingredients so we get consistent results day after day and store to store. It doesn’t matter if one company is offering a cheaper price, we don’t vary our products, we use the same every time.

Even down to the butter we provide on the tables.

The idea behind Babe’s was simple, good quality food served by caring, hard working people— like a big meal with friends and extended family.

“Part of what we’ve done with Babe’s is made it so several generations can get together and enjoy meals,” Paul says. “Often, we’ll end up with several generations, three or sometimes four together, and we designed it that way. We get some criticism about being open Sundays, but we always have a huge church crowd. We have tables that can be easily moved around to accommodate large parties. We have concrete floors, it’s not a place where eyebrows are raised if there are kids in attendance. I say, if we need to, we’ll bring in a garden hose to clean the floors.

“We wanted to duplicate a family reunion feel,” he says of planning Babe’s. “We were also keyed in on the fact that, in the Metroplex, it’s hard to find food like we grew up with in West Texas.

What we’ve concentrated on is doing what our mothers and grandmothers did. We’re not trying to be innovative, but what we do isn’t easy, either.

When our mother called us to the table, we were there right then because every minute food sits, it goes down in quality. So, part of what we do is serve food hot and make it in lots of small batches. Even our desserts are all scratch-made.”

The same principle applies at every Babe’s, at Bubba’s and at Sweetie Pie’s. Your food arrives fresh and hot. At Babe’s, bowls of mashed potatoes, corn and green beans must be passed around the table. It’s the same with the plates of fried or smoked chicken, fried catfish, chicken fried steak and biscuits. At Sweetie Pie’s the menu varies, with items such as steaks, a ribeye pot pie, squash casserole and mac-n-cheese, but the same rules apply: the food is always fresh, always served hot and always scrumptious.

THE GOLDEN RULE Today there are nine locations of Babe’s (p. 25), with a 10th under construction as well as a second Sweetie Pie’s. Paul’s years in the restaurant business, one of which was a corporate entity, taught him how to treat his employees—but more importantly, it taught him how not to treat them. Joel and Tiffany, both of whom worked for large companies, are inclined in the same manner as their father.

They are choosy about their hires at Babe’s, from the kitchen crew up through their general managers. They seek people who will make guests feel like family, who will spend time visiting with adults and maybe tease the kids a little. Paul says, “They may ask, ‘OK, who didn’t finish their green beans tonight?’”

There’s fun music, the wait staff will dance for the crowd, with the Hokey Pokey being a favorite dancing tune.

The Vinyards don’t treat their employees well because they have to; it’s who they are and how they were raised. It goes back to their being raised in church. Tiffany says, “Where we were taught to treat others how we’d like to be treated.”

Tim Sloan, the general manager of the Babe’s in Arlington, says the Vinyard family practices what they preach. From Tennessee originally, Sloan moved around managing restaurants for a corporate restaurant chain for almost a decade. He moved to Texas when he got married because it’s his wife’s home state.

“When I came to Babe’s, I started out as an assistant entry level manager, like all general managers start out, and worked my way into this position,” he explains. “I knew the day I interviewed with Paul that Babe’s would be a different place to work. He wanted to ensure I’d have the quality of life I wanted if I came to Babe’s—he didn’t ask about how I’d boost sales. He wanted to know about my family, what would keep me satisfied if I came to work for him.

“A defining moment came about a year after I’d worked for the Vinyards. I had moved to Frisco to open that new store.

I got a call that my Dad in Tennessee had a heart attack and multiple strokes. As an only child, I felt pulled to leave, but felt I had no time while trying to open a restaurant. Paul came to the restaurant in his truck to ask me when I’d be leaving for Tennessee, and I told him, ‘I can’t leave.’ He told me, ‘Son, you have to leave, you only have one dad.’”

Sloan insisted he couldn’t leave. He says Paul asked him, “Is it a matter of money? If so, we’ll pay to get you home to your father, no matter the cost.”

Sloan says he has many similar stories of the family’s kindness to employees, whom the Vinyards count as extended family.

“I feel blessed to work for Paul,” Sloan adds.

Sloan notes the family table experience created by the Vinyards really does bring folks together.

“We don’t have TVs in our stores, which makes people more prone to communicate,” he says. “We serve the food family style, so in order to eat, you have to ask to have it passed to you, which creates more opportunities for communication.”

Paul has a knack for identifying talented hires, no doubt from his decades in many different restaurants, hiring many different people. His Granbury general manager is an example of that.

Jason Jefferson grew up in Mississippi and had worked in the restaurant industry for years before relocating to Texas.

“I moved from Mississippi to Louisiana and worked for Popeye’s (Louisiana Kitchen) in Louisiana,” says Jefferson. “I was only making minimum wage, which at the time was $4.25. My sister said, ‘Move to Texas, you’ll earn more money.’”

Jefferson made the move and worked for Burger Street until a friend urged him to come work for Babe’s with him.

“By that time I’d met my wife, and my life was changing,” he says. “I was ready to make a change with my job. We moved from Irving to Fort Worth, and I came to Babe’s.”

Jefferson began working his way through Babe’s manager training, moving around to several different locations, and landed a job as the floor manager in Arlington. He was home celebrating his two younger sons’ birthdays on a Saturday, which are both in June, when he had some unexpected visitors.

“I was helping get things ready at the house for the party when I heard a diesel engine pull up,” he says. “I thought, ‘I don’t even know anyone who drives a diesel.’ So I go out in the front, and there is Paul, Tiffany and Joel in Paul’s big old pick up in my driveway. In my mind I said to myself, ‘What did I do?’

“They said, ‘Jason, we have something we want to talk to you about; could we go inside?’ Well, I didn’t think they’d come all that way to tell me bad news, but I was still nervous. So they all came inside and in front of my family and all of our friends, they said, ‘Jason, we’d like you to go to Granbury to be our general manager.’ And let me tell you, oh my goodness it was amazing. Everybody was so surprised and excited.”

Jefferson has been general manager of the Granbury location now for more than five years. He says he feels people come back to Babe’s because it feels like family.

“We greet our guests warmly. We say, ‘Hey guys! How are you doing? Come on in, come on in,” says Jefferson. “I’m a country boy from Mississippi, and that’s how you make someone feel like family.”

The Vinyards find plenty of great help from Texans as well, like Rick Nall in the Garland store.

He grew up in Sherman and started working in restaurants when he was in high school. Though not a Red Raider himself, he sent all three of his kids to Texas Tech. Nall was working for a corporate chain of restaurants when he moved to Babe’s.

“I had been a customer of Babe’s in Garland for years before I went to work there,” says Nall. “I had told my wife I was ready to retire (while in his early 50s) from my management job because the corporate lifestyle was so stressful. It wasn’t good.”

In an unusual move, he was hired as a general manager because the Garland store had an immediate need.

“I’ve been with Babe’s nine years now, and I tell people that God saved the best job for the end of my career. I’m 67 and I don’t want to retire until I’m 72. What really sets Babe’s apart from other places I’ve worked is the lack of stress, it’s amazing. Paul, Joel and Tiffany are the most gracious, caring, loving people you could ever work for, they’re fully grounded in The Golden Rule.”

The way the Vinyards treat their management, said one manager, trickles down. The managers are happy, they, in turn, make their employees happy, who, in turn, make the customers happy.

It’s a very, very simple recipe for success.

from Buddy Holly Avenue to Ringling Road Lubbock is an iconic city in the music industry, particularly for the Americana and Texas music scene. There’s a reason for that: it’s tough. The Hub City isn’t easy on young talent. But if they can make it here, they’re sure to make it everywhere else.

Texas country singer and songwriter, William Clark Green ’10 rolled into Lubbock in 2004 after working in Amarillo. Green was born and raised in Tyler, Texas. When he was in sixth grade, his family moved from Tyler to College Station. Green graduated from A&M Consolidated in College Station. While he was in high school, his sister and brother were both in college at Texas Tech. While his mother urged him to at least take a tour of Tech’s campus, Green, who planned to go straight to work in the Panhandle, had no desire.

“I had no interest in going to Tech after high school, I had no interest in going to college,” recalls Green. “But if I wouldn’t have gone to Tech, none of this would’ve ever happened.”

After working for various ranching operations in high school, Green’s dream was to move to the Panhandle and be a cowboy; however, that dream changed after a month of working in the hot sun and wind at an Amarillo feedlot. Green packed up and moved to Lubbock to attend South Plains College. After a year at South Plains, he made good grades and was able to get into Tech. Green graduated in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics.

Throughout his childhood and high school days, songwriting had always been his focus. He played sports in school, but that was never where his true passion was. Green began playing guitar and writing songs when he was in seventh grade. Musicians such as Willis Allan Ramsey, Guy Clark and Lyle Lovett sparked his interest and love for the Texas music scene, and he hasn’t looked back since. He has been influenced by his peers and fellow Red Raiders such as Josh Abbott ’04, Wade Bowen ’01 and Pat Green ’97 just to name a few.

As a freshman at South Plains, Green was living in Lubbock with mutual friends of his sister’s college roommate. He recalls that he had no idea who his roommates were, only that they played guitar and wrote songs and let him live with them. During this time, Green got his first Lubbock gig, and began playing every Monday night at the Recovery Room in the Lubbock Inn. “Within a week of living in Lubbock, I was playing at Recovery Room and that turned into song-swapping there once a week for three years,” Green says.

Upon turning 21, Green began playing at The Blue Light Live on singer/songwriter night. Singer/songwriter night is dedicated to up and coming musicians, where they are required to play only original tunes. Green soon took over Blue Light’s Tuesday night spot, which was previously filled by his friend and peer, Josh Abbott.

“I met Josh at one of his band rehearsals, where I went and just sat in the corner and watched how he directed and saw the energy and excitement that he had for this one show,” he says. “He came over to me afterwards and said he’d been hearing my name around town and offered me his Tuesday nights at Blue Light. This was the first time I’d met him and he offered me his Tuesday nights, that’s just the kind of friend he was to me.”

The Blue Light is a very iconic place for young singers and songwriters in the Texas music scene. Tech students pack the barstools every week. Green credits Blue Light to much of his success and recalls that one of the early street parties hosted by Blue Light is where it became evident to him and the band that they were doing something right. This year’s street party, headlined by Green, sold out days before the show.

“Blue Light has been very good to us, and we’ve tried to return the favor to them over the years,” Green says.

Green believes Blue Light is one of the best places for young talent to hone their skills and learn the scene.

Artists start playing to a small crowd where nobody knows their name during songwriter night, which motivates them to try harder. If they really want it they’ll do it and Blue Light is where they’ll get this validation.

“The Blue Light Live is the best live music venue west of Fort Worth, period. It just is,” Green says.

During his fourth year of college, Green released his first album Dangerous Man at the age of 22. Green took out a loan to pay for the album’s production. The hard work and dedication that went into this album helped Green realize his passion. The genuine compliments that he received from the album resonated deeply with him and motivated him to continue to work even harder and improve.

“This record was proof that for the first time in my life I was really, really good at something,” Green recalls.

“Those first starting years were crazy and were just a leap of faith,” Green says.

After the release of his first album, every year got better and better.

Upon graduating in 2010, he followed up Dangerous Man with his second album, “Misunderstood” in 2011, and in 2013 he released “Rose Queen.” “Rose Queen” was the turning point for Green and became a breakthrough album for him. The album included his first top 10 hit on Texas Radio, “It’s About Time.” Other hits off the record included “She Likes the Beatles” and the title track, “Rose Queen.” 2015 was another big year for Green with the release of his fourth album, “Ringling Road.” This album is complied of multiple hit songs including “Sympathy, Sticks and Stones” and the title track “Ringling Road.” In 2016, he released his “Live at Gruene Hall” album.

“She Likes the Beatles” was Green’s first No. 1 single. The idea came about during a late night Monopoly game and a few drinks between Green and his band. The lyrics transpired after one of the band members got off the phone with his current girlfriend and blurted out “It’s never going to work out; she likes the Beatles, and I like the Stones!” The song was the second single released off his album “Rose Queen” and quickly made its way to No. 1 on the Texas Music Chart.

Green is involved in every song that goes on each of his records, whether he co-wrote or wrote the song himself. He says he never remembers trying to write a song that was Texas Country; he says he writes independent music that is relatable to his fans.

“I just write. I love writing music, that’s my thing,” Green says.

Green now resides on his grandparent’s old homestead in Eastland, Texas, where he and his blue heeler pup, B-Bear, run cattle and spend their time away from the road. While at home in Eastland, Green says he tries to work on the land and return it to the way it was before sitting vacant for years. Green grew up visiting his

grandparents and enjoys being able to go back there to get away from the everyday rush.

“I just fell in love with the place and the land here over time,” Green says.

Green and his band now play approximately 130 to 150 shows per year, with venues such as Gruene Hall, Granada Theatre and of course, The Blue Light being some of his favorites. He also credits festivals such as Larry Joe Taylor Fest in Stephenville, Texas, and The MusicFest in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, to his successful career. However, at the end of the day, Lubbock, Texas, shaped him to be the singer and songwriter that he is today.

“Lubbock is where it started so it’s always going to be the height of it all,” Green said.

Green said with a smile ‘There’s something in the water out here’ when referring to Lubbock and its rich musical history and culture. Green referred to Lubbock being the hub of West Texas and believes that’s the reason it is so tough for young artists to breakthrough here. However, when they do, the effort is so rewarding.

“If West Texas were its own state, Lubbock would be the Austin. It would be the music place,” Green said. “Lubbock gives you a backbone when you cut your roots here.”

Dear fellow Red Raider alumni and friends, We are at an exciting time for the Texas Tech University System. Our institutions continue to grow, thrive and innovate to provide invaluable opportunities to our students and faculty. I am excited for this first opportunity to share the success and future of the system with our passionate Texas Tech alumni through the Texas Techsan.

As many of you know, our Texas Tech family extends well beyond Lubbock. The Texas Tech University System was established in 1996 with Texas Tech University and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Since then, Angelo State University and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso have joined the system as our third and fourth institutions. In our nearly 22-year history, we’ve grown to be a true, four-institution system, serving over 51,000 students across 17 campuses.

In the first half of 2017, Texas was in its 85th Legislative Session. As I’m sure you’re all aware, the budget for the next biennium was a lean one.

Thankfully, the Texas Tech University System is represented by strong leadership advocating for our institutions at the Capitol, both by our governmental relations team, our West Texas delegation and the Red Raider alumni members of the Legislature.

In a tight budget, the system received funding for a dental school at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso and a planning grant for a veterinary medicine program in Amarillo. The veterinary medicine funding allows us to do the important planning to ensure a financially and academically sustainable model. We are grateful for the funding we received and these great opportunities, and are confident we will achieve success moving forward with them during the next two years.

Legislative funding is crucial to continue building a world-class university system. It lays the foundation for our day-to-day existence. Even though we can be thankful for the appropriations we received, it was ultimately still a tight budget year. Philanthropy is our greatest tool in funding excellence; innovation is powered by philanthropy. Giving of any size to our universities is an investment in our students, faculty and the future of our state, nation and world.

Our vision for the system is that we act as a partner and a resource for our institutions to ensure they have what they need to provide top-notch resources and opportunities to our students and faculty. To support this, we’re fostering a model of sustained philanthropy.

This is about more than a campaign with a monetary goal at the end of it. Though campaigns of the past truly launched the system, we’ve matured to the next level of fundraising; the next step is a strategy of sustained philanthropy. This allows us to focus on developing relationships with our donors, while making it our goal to develop bold, innovative ideas that have an impact and solve problems for the benefit of our state, nation and world,

and excite donors and supporters. We are dedicating ourselves to stewardship and best practices to foster relationships with the people who truly believe in what we’re doing. Since I took office, we have raised over $400 million in philanthropic funds. These investments in philanthropy create opportunities we otherwise wouldn’t have.

Through sustained philanthropy, our donors act as partners by investing in areas like scholarships, facilities, research and faculty endowments.

Enhancing each of these areas plays a critical role in increasing our prominence and strengthening our ability to compete by providing opportunities that attract the best minds from across the nation to our institutions, making us an undeniable force in higher education.

I am entering my fourth year as chancellor, and at every turn of this journey, I have been truly thankful for the generous support and passion for Texas Tech our Red Raider alumni show. At this pivotal time of growth for our system, in which expanding our brand is critical, our alumni are our best ambassadors. I hope you all will continue to bear our banners far and wide because we have so much to be proud of.

In the past two academic years, Texas Tech had one Rhodes Scholarship finalist, two Goldwater scholars and four students earn Fulbright grants.

Between Angelo State and Texas Tech, we’ve won over 15 academic and student activity national championships. This past May, over 100 students and faculty from the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts performed a Memorial Day concert to a packed house in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City and received a standing ovation.

I encourage you all to take a look at the fantastic things happening at all of our institutions, as well as how the Texas Tech University System is serving and supporting communities all across our great state. I am confident it will make you proud of our alma mater.

THE L A DY RA I DERS made history once again with a program-record 27 victories and the highest final ITA national ranking (No. 7) during the 2017 season. Texas Tech also earned its third-straight trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 and the program’s first Elite Eight appearance. The team has now collected six straight NCAA Tournament bids under Head Coach Todd Petty.

The team also claimed the Big 12 regular season and tournament titles for the first time in program history. The regular season title was the third under Petty while the tournament title was the first for the Lady Raiders.

Gabriela Talaba became Texas Tech’s first AllAmerican and earned the program’s highest ITA individual ranking (No. 8). She also set the school record for most wins in dual matches at the No. 1 position with as she finished the season 22-5.

Talaba was named the Big 12 Player of the Year for her outstanding year on the court. Petty was name Big 12 Coach of the Year for the third time in his career.

The Lady Raiders stayed in the Top 25 for 46 consecutive weeks and a Top 10 ranking for the last 13 weeks. Texas Tech posted a 15-5 record against nationally ranked opponents including wins more than four Top 10 opponents.

Texas Tech is the highest ranked Big 12 member followed by No. 10 Oklahoma State, No. 17 Baylor, No. 22 Texas, No. 28 TCU, No. 39 Kansas and No. 47 Oklahoma.

The Texas Tech Women’s Tennis team ended its season at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships May 25.

No. 9 Gabriela Talaba fell in two sets (6-4, 6-2) to Michigan’s Brienne Minor, snapping an 11-match win streak. Talaba ends the season with a team-leading 25-7 record.

No. 44 Anna Danilina (Florida) dropped No. 58 Felicity Maltby in straight sets (6-1, 6-1). Maltby fell to 18-11 on the season.

Doubles duo Sarah Dvorak and Sabrina Federici suffered a 6-2, 7-5 loss to No. 15 Maddie Lipp and Alex Chatt of Northwestern in the opening round of the doubles competition. The two posted a 16-11 record this season as the No. 1 doubles team for Tech.

Texas Tech Alumni Association Celebrates 90 Years

The Texas Tech Alumni Association celebrated its 90th anniversary on May 30. The organization was established in 1927 by the first graduates of Texas Technological College. From its original 26 members, the organization has continued to expand and currently boasts more than 30,500 active members.

The Alumni Association held an anniversary reception for members June 2 at the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center in Lubbock. Ninety years later, the organization is larger than ever, and our alumni continue to be loud and proud supporters of Texas Tech.

The original goal of the association was for alumni to remain in touch with one another and to stay informed about happenings on campus. The founders also wanted to provide input to the school and financial support. To this day, the mission of the alumni association remains the same—to establish a lifelong connection with Red Raiders while continuing to support Texas Tech University and its faculty, staff and students.

In 2016, the association has awarded more than $400,000 in scholarships to 523 students from the Texas Tech Alumni Association Endowment Trust. The Alumni Association also gives back to the university through various grants and awards each year. The organization has awarded two $10,000 grants to the Texas Tech University Department of Physics and the Innovation Hub at Research Park in 2016 as part of the Excellence Grant program that supports campus academic and research projects. Other annual awards include the Top Techsan awards for university staff, New Faculty awards, and Distinguished Alumni and service awards. In addition, since 1950, Texas Techsan magazine, a membership benefit of the Texas Tech Alumni Association, has relayed campus and student news and especially, alumni news, to readers six times annually.

Bill Dean, Ed.D., president and CEO, has been with the organization since 1978 and has seen firsthand the benefits of the organization for the university and the continued support from alumni over the years.

“Former chancellors John Montford and Kent Hance both told me they believed Texas Tech would never have been as successful in the two major capital fund campaigns if we had not had an active and engaged alumni association through the years,” Dean says. “I think that speaks volumes about the role our association has played in the growth of our university.”

The Alumni Association maintains its lifelong connection with alumni through its 75 regional and national chapters around the country and overseas. Last year, the association introduced the Military Veterans National Alumni Chapter, which provides a community for military and veteran graduates of Texas Tech and their families. Chapters provide unique opportunities for alumni to come together and help one another.

“The TTAA has had a presence in most major communities in the U.S.,” says Jim Douglass, associate vice president, for chapter development. “This allows many Red Raiders the chance to meet and network with other alumni and raise much needed scholarships for local students. We feel this support will continue to grow for the next 90 years, resulting in an even stronger Texas Tech University and Alumni Association.”

Texas Tech Alumni Association memberships also support memorable traditions for current students such as the Official Texas Tech Class Ring Program and ceremonies, the Student Leadership Reception, and the Senior Decal Drive-Thru. In a partnership with the Texas Tech University Office of the

President, each graduate of Texas Tech receives a free one-year membership to the association as a chance to keep them engaged with the university and fellow alumni.

In an effort to maintain that lifelong connection with Red Raiders, the Alumni Association launched the Texas Tech Legacy Program in 2009 that encourages children and grandchildren of alumni to become Red Raiders for life and keeps them engaged with the university. The program boasts nearly 6,000 legacies and potential Red Raiders.

MARIA ALVARADO and MYSTIE DO are the first students to receive national American Advertising Awards (ADDY) while attending Texas Tech University. Alvarado received a silver ADDY for a stationery package created in a visual systems class.

The project focused on branding elements for a restaurant, including business cards, menus and product labels. Do won a silver ADDY for a promotional video she developed in a motion graphics class. The video, adapted from a print poster created by professor Dirk Fowler, was later chosen to commemorate the graphic design program’s name change and is used for recruitment purposes.

The entries were first submitted to Lubbock’s local ADDY competition. From there, the entries competed at the district level, where their victories qualified them for the national competition. The national winners were announced in June at the national awards show in New Orleans.

GRETCHEN WILLIAMS , a doctoral candidate in

history, is the fourth Texas Tech student promoted to a finalist for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. She was originally named an alternate for the program but has been notified that she was promoted to a finalist and will receive funding for research abroad. She will travel to Spain to research the history of the Calé people in the 16th Century.

Four finalists is the largest number of students to be awarded by the Fulbright U.S. Student Program in an academic year at Texas Tech.

Three other Texas Tech students also were chosen as finalists for the Fulbright Program.

ERIN GROGAN , a doctoral fine arts candidate, will travel to Ireland to study Irish identity on stage. IVETTE NORIEGA , a doctoral candidate in human development and family studies, will travel to Colombia to research the neurocognitive effects of posttraumatic stress disorder on children exposed to violence. MICHELLE JONES , a master’s student specializing in special education and visual impairment, will travel to India to learn how vocational training impacts the social mobility of women who have disabilities.

I N O N LY I T S second year of existence, a team of finance students from Texas Tech University’s Rawls College of Business was nationally recognized May 25, taking home third place in the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) 2017 Community Bank Case Study Competition. Texas Tech’s team members are VINCENT ATCHISON , finance major; TAYLOR HADSALL , finance major; ERIC LAMM , finance and accounting major; ALEX PRIEST , finance major and SARA VAN SICKLE , finance major.

All five graduated from Texas Tech this past spring, each received a $250 CSBS scholarship and the team’s case study will be published in the Journal of Community Bank Case Studies.

COLE WHEELER and WESLEY THORP won a team roping title at the 2017 College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming, in, June. The title was the second straight team roping title the duo won.

The team dominated at the CNFR, amassing 260 points, 80 points ahead of second-place University of Tennessee-Martin and East Mississippi State Community College. Wheeler and Thorp posted times of 6.1, 6.8 and 6.4 seconds, respectively, in the first three go-rounds, then hit 5.9 seconds in the short go for an average of 25.2.

As a team, Texas Tech finished sixth overall in the CNFR with 520 points. Panhandle State won the team competition with 827.5 points.

Dr. Dhurandhar was awarded the 2015 American Society for Nutrition’s Osborne and Mendel Award, which recognizes recent outstanding basic research accomplishments in nutrition.
