your article in the recent issue of Techsan on Major Gilbert and his wife’s journey from grief after his death. As a retired military member, it’s something we all live with and is always there in the background. I was impressed with how much the story revealed about them and how her new life has helped her heal.

One of the better pieces I’ve read in the Techsan. I found a connection I didn’t expect.

My family also lived at RAF Lakenheath where they (the Gilberts) did and I was living there during the years I was at Tech.

A Few Goodbyes say about Spike Dykes that has not already been said?

When I learned of his passing on April 10, it felt as though part of my life was all of a sudden missing. Spike was an “original.” There will never be another like him.

He took over a football program that was struggling financially and lacked consistency on the field. Slowly but surely, he began to lay a solid foundation for our program.

His career record here (13 years) was 82-67-1, and his conference record was 57-40-1. I imagine his overall record would have been much stronger if we had not scheduled non-conference trips to Penn State, Ohio State, Tennessee, Florida State and Miami. Those trips were necessary for financial reasons and also to prepare our teams for big crowds they would face in the Southwest Conference and later the Big 12.

One of the things that endeared him to Tech fans was beating Texas and A&M six times during those 13 years. No one else has come close to that.

Mike Leach beat A&M seven times but beat UT only twice.

I have heard many Red Raider fans speculate on how Spike might have fared with the resources that have been put into the program since his departure. But Spike never complained. He just did his job.

I don’t think I ever made a request for him to go to a chapter meeting that he turned down. He was always a huge draw.

There are countless stories about Spike-isms. My favorite was the question he asked at alumni gatherings following the 1995 Cotton Bowl 55-14 loss to Southern California. Spike would talk to the crowd as if they knew what he and Billy Graham had in common. “We both have the ability to get 75,000 people to stand up and say Good God Almighty.”

The good news is he can now rejoin his beloved Sharon. He stood beside her every day of her illness. It was a great love story.

We are all better off having known Spike. God rest his soul.

WHAT C A N YOU

C ON G RATU L ATIO N S T O T H E Texas Tech cheerleading squad and the pom squad! Both squads were named national champions at the National Cheer Association Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championships in Daytona Beach, Florida, in April.

The cheer coach is Bruce Bills, and Erin Alvarado is the pom squad head coach. Stephanie Rhode is the spirit program director. She is a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award presented by our association at the Matador Dinner last Homecoming.

A ton of hard work goes into both these programs, and this year, it really paid off! (See p. 34 and 35 of this issue for more information.)

JOURN A L I S M A N D A DV E RT I SI NG majors and those who were in the thenpublic relations sequence program from the ’60s, ’70s and early ’80s will remember the late Ralph Sellmeyer. He passed away Feb. 27 at the age of 92.

He started at Tech as a journalism professor in 1960 during my junior year. In his 21 years at Texas Tech, he taught more than 30 different courses, wrote three books (one on the history of Texas Tech football written with the late Jim Davidson), served as associate chair of the then-journalism department and headed the divisions of journalism and advertising. He was responsible for the creation of the public relations program.

In 1998, he was inducted into the Texas Tech School of Mass Communications (now the College of Media & Communication) Hall of Fame.

Ralph was a mentor of mine along with many new faculty members during that time. He was supportive and wanted you to succeed. He went out of his way to be helpful. He left his mark, and many of us are eternally grateful.

ROBE RT DA N “ H E AV Y C AT ” T HOM P S O N , I I I , passed on March 24, much too early. “Heavy Cat,” as his Kappa Sigma brothers named him, served as president of the Texas Tech Alumni Association in 2001 after serving six years on our board.

The story goes that he got that nickname when he jumped on a tabletop and entertained all with a rendition of “Twist and Shout.” A Kappa Sig remarked, “That’s a heavy cat,” and it stuck. I can see it now.

He served Kappa Sigma for ten years as their chapter adviser, mentoring to hundreds of young men during that time.

It was sad to see his struggle with esophageal cancer because he was a person full of life and someone who lived life to the fullest. He certainly made life interesting in our offices during his tenure.

He had a 46-year career with Mass Mutual, where he was recognized as one of the Top 10 Agents in the United States. But his love was Texas Tech, and he never passed up an opportunity to support the Red and Black.

I wonder if they do “Twist and Shout” in Heaven?

the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal carried a story that the paper had forced Texas Tech to release the Title IX documents related to the hearing and subsequent suspension of Tech quarterback Jett Duffey. A woman charged Duffey with sexual assault.

The thing that stands out in this story is that Duffey was not billed by a Lubbock Grand Jury that concluded there was not sufficient cause to criminally prosecute case. However, a Texas Tech Title IX hearing panel suspended him for the spring and summer semesters.

As I reported in an earlier column, one important aspect was the way schools determine guilt against the accuser. The standard is “the preponderance of the evidence.” This action is in direct contrast to the criminal justice system that required “a reasonable doubt.”

This standard was dictated in 2011 when “The Obama Education Department” wrote “Dear Colleague” letters to schools. The letter required schools to respond promptly to sexual violence against students “in accordance with the requirements of Title IX.” Jennifer D. Jasper, an attorney-at-law with West, Webb, Allbritton & Gentry, P.C., discusses situations like this in a Texas Association of College Teachers Quarterly eBulletin. “A ‘preponderance of the evidence’ standard is commonly described as 51 percent. That is, if the evidence tends to favor one position, even slightly, that is sufficient to find wrong-doing,” she writes.

The A-J story with Matthew Gregory, Tech’s dean of students, points out that “Title IX hearings are different than the criminal court system in that students are not considered guilty or not guilty, but rather responsible or not responsible for a policy regulation.”

Through the Wildlife Toxicology Laboratory at TIEHH, Kendall, his staff and students will be responsible for working on Texas Tech’s role in the research: advancing scientific understanding of movement and population abundance of monarchs, particularly through the Rolling Plains ecoregion; and beginning to evaluate what kind of habitat improvements could occur that would help the species sustain itself.

This study revealed that populations of the species may plunge by a staggering 90 percent over the next 50 years if no action is taken to curb the bat’s mortality.

Stevenson was governor of Texas from 1941 to 1947 and Stevenson was known as “Mr. Texas.” Born in Mason County on March 20, 1888, Stevenson worked as a cowhand, built windmills and owned a freight line at age 16. He worked as a janitor at a bank and became a bank clerk—eventually he was the bank president.

His collection includes diaries, legal papers and photographs from when Stevenson was age one up until his death. The records are available for public research purposes.

THE TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT HOSTED A GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY FOR THE EXPERIMENTAL SCIENCES BUILDING II ON FEB. 22. ESB II will contain collaborative research laboratories and expanded stateof-the-art small-animal research facilities as well as a biosafety level 2 lab, which is required for many types of biomedical research. The goal of the facility is to increase Texas Tech’s research capacity. The 117,000-square-foot facility was funded by $70 million from the Texas Legislature’s authorization of a tuition revenue bond and $7 million in revenue finance system funds to be repaid by Higher Education Assistance Funds. The first Experimental Sciences Building was completed 10 years ago.

THE TRANSFER OF REINS CEREMONY, USHERING IN THE 56TH MASKED RIDER, WAS HELD FRIDAY, APRIL 21, AT THE MCKENZIE-MERKET ALUMNI CENTER. The 2016-2017 Texas Tech Masked Rider, CHARLIE SNIDER, transferred the reins to the 2017-2018 Masked Rider LAURIE TOLBOOM from Dublin, Texas. Tolboom, who began riding when she was five, is a graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in mass communications. She completed her bachelor of science in agricultural communications in December. The Masked Rider will travel more than 15,000 miles and attend more than 200 events representing the Red and Black. Their identities were brought to light at the annual Passing of the Guns ceremony in the McKenzieMerket Alumni Center. Williams, a junior mechanical engineering major, and Hartman, a sophomore chemical engineering major, along with two student assistants, made a total of 387 appearances as Raider Red this past year, attending campus events and area schools, fundraisers and civic events in the Lubbock community. Raider Red also traveled to Los Angeles to film a commercial for ESPN and AT&T and appeared at the Capitol in Austin for Texas Tech University System Day.

On Friday, April 28, faculty, staff and students met at Memorial Circle to celebrate Arbor Day 2017 with music and refreshments. From 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., participants planted flowers across the Texas Tech campus. In 1937, in an effort to beautify campus, President Bradford Knapp planned the first Arbor Day. During that first event, 20,000 trees were planted on campus.

On May 9 and 10, during finals, the Texas Tech University Library and the South Plains Obedience Training Club provided dogs for students to pet to de-stress from final exams. The dogs were in the Croslin Room in the Texas Tech University Library from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. both days.

Growing up the son of a U.S. Navy nurse moving from base to base every 36 months, Allan Rayson played sports as a way to “plug-in” and get involved in his new school and community. At the time, Rayson didn’t realize that youth sports and his entrepreneurial antics would one day lead to building his own company out of Austin, PaidUp. Rayson was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but eventually moved to a Marine Corps base in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where he graduated from high school.

When it came time to decide where he would attend college, University of Oklahoma, the University of Texas at Austin and UNC Chapel Hill were in the running. After a close friend of his was injured in a car wreck, Rayson walked with him on his road to recovery through months of physical therapy and took an interest in PT. He was attracted to the outstanding PT program at Texas Tech and moved to Lubbock.

He was quick to realize that physical therapy was not his calling and switched his major to business. He received his bachelor’s degree in marketing in 1999 and master’s degree in general business in 2000 from the Rawls College of Business.

Rayson never lost his love for sports. Upon arrival at Texas Tech, he was on the men’s club soccer team, where he met his wife, Jennifer Benat Rayson (BS ’98 Exercise and Sports Science, MS ’00 Physical Education). Jennifer was a member of one of the first D1 soccer teams at Tech and served as her team’s captain. The couple dated while working on their undergraduate degrees and married after beginning graduate school.

Together, the couple has three boys: Will (13), Alex (12), and Sam (9).

Upon graduation, Rayson began a career in banking as an analyst with Comerica Bank in Dallas. While working his way through a career with a growing family and kids who were gravitating toward sports, he knew it was time to make a career change.

Rayson continued to work in banking, as his oldest son, Will, began to take interest in pursuing a journey in travel baseball.

“When your oldest comes to you and asks you to pursue that kind of endeavor, it gives you some pause because it’s crazy expensive, time-consuming and a big commitment, but as a parent you support them on that journey,” Rayson says. “We were paying thousands of dollars for one kid to play sports, and it opened my eyes to that world and how crazy it is.”

Being exposed to youth sports as a parent, Rayson began framing up the business model for what would become PaidUp. Living in Dallas at the time, he realized that the ecosystem for startup businesses was not thriving. As a beginning entrepreneur, it was hard for him to find capital and technology talent to help him build his idea. He says as much as his Type A personality tries to control his own destiny, he realized that God had different plans for him and his family, and they made the move to Austin from Dallas.

Still in banking at the time, Rayson continued to build his business model and found the resources needed in Austin’s entrepreneur-friendly ecosystem to get his business off the ground.

“I always knew that I would go out and do something on my own, and I think that’s where I got the business model, being exposed to youth sports as a parent of an athlete,” Rayson says. “When we were going through that process, I really had my eyes opened to how inefficient these clubs were. Most of the payments were still through cash and check.”

PaidUp was created to serve as the liaison between coaches of club sports teams and parents of athletes. The company manages all financial aspects of the team, allowing the coaches to focus on coaching and not handling the business side of the team.

The Rayson family enjoys sports as much as the clients of PaidUp.

PaidUp also provides parents with the option to set up payment plans and gives them the flexibility needed to pay costly fees associated with club sports. PaidUp helps the team maintain efficiency and focus on coaching kids to reach their full potential while developing a love for the game. This program has helped the relationships between parents and coaches improve because coaches do not have to ask parents for money anymore and are no longer known as the “bad guys.”

PaidUp accepted the first payment in December 2014 and then went through a period of trial and testing. PaidUp was formally launched in August 2015, with only a couple of clients.

Today, their client count is more than 25.

“I am always humbled when I say this: We are now working with some of the largest volleyball, baseball and basketball clubs across the country,” Rayson notes.

Rayson credits much of his success to his time spent in the Hub City.

“I feel like I owe the university so much,” he says. “The people, the school and the town—it all gave me an opportunity to find myself. It gave me opportunities after graduating that I never would have had otherwise.”

However, one of his most cherished findings that Texas Tech brought to him, he says, is his wife, Jennifer.

“I can go point to the spot at Chitwood-Weymoth where I met my wife,” Rayson says. “I met my wife here (at Texas Tech), and 17 years later, we have a family and have just had a great path personally.”

Allan and Jennifer met through their matching soccer bags while checking their luggage in the Lubbock airport. They had the same black Adidas soccer bag that made them strike up a conversation and led to their reconnecting upon their arrival in Lubbock.

“We ended up visiting in the airport for a few minutes before heading to our connecting flights. After arriving back in Lubbock after that weekend, we reconnected, and the rest is history,” says Jennifer, who is proud of Allan and their business. She notes that it’s because of Texas Tech that her family has the life they do today. “It’s (PaidUp) brought us together as a family because we all have a common goal, and are all vested in the company.”

Rayson wants to give back to the university for all that it has given him over the years. He wants to acknowledge that leaving Lubbock is only a starting point and serves as a springboard for people to do whatever they want to do.

“I want to do everything I can to support the people and the students that are coming out of the university and let them know that from Lubbock, pretty much anything is possible.”

The Double

The Double T is one of the most iconic images associated with Texas Tech. Whether you spot it on a baseball cap, a t-shirt or the back of someone’s car, you know immediately what it is.

What you might not know is that the Double T has been around since Texas Tech’s earliest days. There is no one person credited with the creation of the Double T—it’s sort of a mystery.

The history written about our famous logo, though, says one of the earliest documented uses of the Double T was by the 1925-1928 Texas Tech football coach, Ewing Freeland.

A 1926 Toreador (the student newspaper) reported that: “Coach Freeland kept the boys in suspense as to what was on the sweaters by telling of the difficulties in selecting the letter. When Captain (Windy) Nicklaus stepped forward for his sweater Coach held it so that the letter could not be seen. He told of some wanting an M (for Matadors), some a T, while he thought a P (for Plains) would be symbolic of the great surrounding country of the college. When Windy unfolded the sweater, he revealed two black outlined T’s on the front of a solid scarlet body.”

The students present for the football sweater presentation were ecstatic, according to an entry in the diary of then-student Lucille Davis Ford. Dated Jan. 7, 1926, she noted: “Football boys receive sweaters. Matadors receive scarlet and black slip-on sweaters with (Double T).

Very Thrilling!”* Just as it did then, still today, the sight of the Double T is thrilling, particularly to alumni who live far from Texas Tech. Seeing that Double T is like seeing a little piece of home.

I thought it would be fun for alumni to have a virtual tour of some of the Double Ts on our fair campus.

Tech in Austin Day2017

E

very biennium, Texas Tech University System alumni, students and friends rally in Austin to ask the legislature to support our alma mater. This year, the Texas Tech Alumni Association, in coordination with the TTU Health Sciences Center and Angelo State University alumni associations, planned one of the most successful TTU System days at the state Capitol.

“Texas Tech University System Day in Austin was an overwhelming success, and I appreciate the hard work of our alumni associations to organize the event,” said Chancellor Robert Duncan. “It was a joy to look up from the Senate floor to see Raider Red and Roscoe the Ram there with so many of our alumni and friends gathered to support our universities by meeting with our legislators.”

On Tuesday, Feb 28, alumni, friends and members of the legislature gathered for a TTU System kick-off reception. The reception was catered by TTU’s Raider Red Meats and ASU’s Meat Market, with appearances from Raider Red and Roscoe the Ram. It was a great evening to reconnect with fellow alumni and celebrate the accomplishments of the universities within our system.

The following morning, a record-breaking crowd gathered in the Capitol to hear the latest updates on the legislature’s efforts to continue funding higher education, healthcare and research initiatives. Raider Red and Roscoe the Ram joined attendees in the House and Senate galleries for recognition of the system in each chamber. TTU System Day attendees met with their elected officials to raise awareness and advocate for continued support of our system.

“Texas Tech University is appreciative of the opportunity to gather with our alumni and thank those in the legislature who work on behalf of Red Raiders throughout the state,” said Lawrence Schovanec, Ph.D., Texas Tech University president. “Our legislators face difficult decisions that have far-reaching impacts across the state and, in particular, higher education. We are aware of their commitment to do what is best in balancing competing demands, and appreciate their efforts.”

To participate in the TTU System Day, the TTAA National Board of Directors held their first meeting of 2017 in Austin. Board members from California to Washington, D.C., and throughout the state, traveled to join fellow alumni at the Capitol.

“Our location may be hundreds of miles from Austin, but the reach of our university goes far beyond that,” TTUHSC President Tedd L. Mitchell, M.D., said. “Texas Tech University System Day honors the determination and impact our alumni, faculty, staff and students have improving the lives of people throughout Texas.”

One of the most important roles of alumni is to support our alma mater. The support can be shown in a variety of ways with joining the local and national alumni associations, raising money for scholarships and participating in events and activities that support our university.

“The TTU System Day was a fantastic event that brought the entire system together at the State Capitol,” said ASU President Brian May, Ph.D, “The Angelo State University Rams were well represented, and it was impressive to see so many alumni and friends travel to Austin to show their support.”

In 1996, the Texas Tech University System’s Board of Regents expanded the existing Texas Tech Day to include all entities of the system. The Texas Tech Alumni Association has organized the event for the past seven legislative sessions.

Remembering the

Legendary

SPIKE DYKES

She was a pretty young thing, that college girl working part-time in the Texas Tech Athletics Deptartment lobby.

I never dreamed she could say something to me that would could change the course of so many things. That sentence of, “My dad’s coming to Texas Tech to coach football” was the beginning of something magical.

Spike Dykes, Bebe’s father, was on TV just a week or two before, coaching Midland Lee in the Class 4A state championship game. You could tell then that he was a good coach. What you couldn’t tell was that he was so much more.

He pretty much tried to stay out of the limelight during his three years at Texas Tech as defensive coordinator, even though his defense didn’t. It was Spike’s defense that created upset wins at Texas A&M (1984) and at No. 8 Arkansas (1986). Those showings had to play a part in Athletic Director T. Jones’ decision to offer Spike the head job when David McWilliams abruptly left after the ‘86 regular season.

Spike was not inheriting a gold mine. The Red Raiders had only one winning season (‘86) in the last eight. Tech was on its sixth head coach in 13 seasons.

How could he change things around into a stable, competitive environment?

One way was to recruit players who might not have been the fastest or strongest, but abounded in effort. He knew he could supply the motivation. Then his personality would mold everybody into one group pulling together and that can be a very good thing.

Then he did something that few other coaches would do—he took one for the team. To help support the Athletic Department’s entire budget, he made one-time stops at Ohio State, Penn State, Florida State and Georgia. But maybe these on-the surface nightmares really led to positive results later. In 13 seasons, Spike had only one losing conference record (3-5 in 1990) and Tech was bowleligible his last seven years. Coaches feared having to play Spike when he had an extra week to prepare—he was 12-3-1 with extra practice time during the regular season. In his four Big 12 Conference campaigns, he had a 9-3 record against Texas, Texas A&M and Baylor. Only one coach in the country beat Texas more times in the 20th century than Spike— Barry Switzer of Oklahoma had nine wins over UT in 16 years while Spike won six of 13.

What made him special, though, was that he was a people’s person. He would talk to the university president and then visit longer with the janitor. He had a knack for making people want to be around him. Like the All-American Bowl press conference when Steve Spurrier talked about his Heisman Trophy. Spike followed with how much his Hellman’s Mayonnaise Award meant to him. Or the media after the game at Ohio State believing Spike was complimentary when he compared the Buckeyes’ new turf to that at Talpa-Centenial (High School).

Or when he told TCU’s Jim Wacker that Tech had forgotten to narrow the goal posts (a rule change from the year before) and please don’t say anything about it.

The media loved him. He made them feel wanted. He would wind up getting them to talk more about their lives than he did about his own. He connected with the fans at annual Red Raider Club events at places like Tahoka, Levelland, Muleshoe, Hereford, Plainview and Lamesa. He’d tell them about the time his dad took him to Clovis, New Mexico, for the first time. They dropped Mom off to do some shopping and they went to the new hotel. Standing in the lobby, they saw lighted numbers above what appeared to be a wall. Then the wall opened and a very average looking woman would enter. The wall would close, the lights above went off. Then the wall opened and a beautiful lady walked out.

Dad turned to Spike and said, “Hurry, go get Mom. We’re gonna stick her in there before we go home.”

He delighted in the fans so much he decided a local event in Lubbock was needed. And not just for the high rollers. He priced it ($50) so the regular guy could feel a part of the Red and Black atmosphere. Mr. Average Joe got lunch, golf, two tickets to a Tech game and lots of free stuff. If that wasn’t enough, Spike wanted to hit a drive for each team.

Luckily, Meadowbrook’s two courses had two different-course tee boxes near each other. You would have thought each of the 515 golfers in attendance that day was a long lost friend as the coach visited and swung that driver for more than nine hours.

That’s where Spike won national championships. He made everybody (players, fans, co-workers, etc.) truly feel appreciated. “Thanks for everything,” he’d say. “You’re the best!” In reality, you were tied for best with hundreds of thousands of others. But you didn’t care.

You just felt too good inside.

The old adage “anything worth having is worth working for” certainly has proven true for Art and Stephanie McClain Hall’s ranch in Houston County, Texas.

he Dos Veces-RM/CP Hall Ranch, Inc., located between Crockett and Madisonville, Texas, about two hours north of the city of Houston, was established by Art Alcausin Hall in 2008 as a ranching investment vehicle and holding company.

The operation currently includes 400 acres. Hall’s short-term goal is to grow the ranch to 1,000 acres, with the long-term goal of acquiring more land and becoming one of the major landowners in Texas, leaving this legacy for his family.

A fifth-generation Texan, Art calls the ranch land his family has owned for four generations “the land.” Hall’s great-great grandfather, Robert Hall, the patriarch of the family, came to Texas as a slave. Once he was free, he began working on land that he eventually hoped to own. He and his wife, Mariah Jackson Hall, were the parents of Robert Hall, Sr., who lived from 1876 to 1965. Robert Sr. and his wife, Mary Etta Nixon Hall, farmed their own land. Acquiring and owning land was unusual for an African-American man back then.

Robert and Mary Etta were part of a community called Vistula, originally made up of at least three distinct AfricanAmerican families who settled the area in the late 19th Century and owned their own land. Each family had been able to acquire about 800 acres of land.

“My parents have encouraged me to work on our family history,” Art says. “One thing I’m really interested in finding out is how these African-Americans were able to acquire so much land during that time period. When you look at a deed, you’re really looking at the land’s history. Interestingly, the land owned by African-Americans in Vistula and in other areas of Texas tended to be by the rivers, documented in the book “Freedom Colonies: Independent Black Texans in the Time of Jim Crow” by Thad Sitton and James H. Conrad. This was the land that Anglo landowners did not want. However, that soil has a lot of nutrients.

While you are at risk for flooding, a lot of times the land in ‘the bottom’ is better than some of the land ‘on top.’”

Robert Sr.’s namesake, Robert Monday Hall, Jr., Art’s beloved grandfather, inherited the land from his father and wanted to add to it by purchasing additional tracts when he married his wife, Cambra Palm Hall. She was the granddaughter of a fullblooded Native American, believed to be from the Caddo tribe or nation, which had extensive populations in East Texas at one time.

In 1929, when Robert Jr. was age 22, the couple was farming cotton and using the proceeds to purchase more land from a wealthy Anglo doctor and landowner. When the third of six payments was due in 1932, Hall was unable to make it on time because a flood destroyed his bumper cotton crop in the field. The landowner refused to accept a late payment and called off the whole deal, per the mortgage agreement with a lien on the land.

The doctor’s wife respected the Halls and encouraged her husband to resell the land to Robert Jr. They made another agreement in 1939, and this time, when the deal was finalized, Robert Jr. sold half the mineral rights to someone else to pay off the land in its entirety, avoiding losing the land again.

So, Robert Jr. bought the land two times—dos veces, in Spanish. Rather than being a sad reminder of the tough time his grandfather had in obtaining this land, the name “Dos Veces” that Art chose for the ranch is a positive testament to the determined, hard-working spirit of his grandfather and of the Hall family. The initials “RM/CP” in the ranch name are those of his grandparents, a further testament to their legacy.

“E

verybody’s always compared me to my grandfather, Robert Hall, Jr., and even when I was little, they used to say I looked like him, I acted like him, I thought like him, I was driven like him and so forth,” Art says. “He was kind of my idol when I was growing up. Whenever I was in school or when I’m working, in the back of my mind, I give a lot of credit to my grandfather.

He was always someone I looked up to.

The fact that he lived in Crockett and in Vistula—on the land—because I was so tied to Grandfather, I was also tied to what he did and what he loved—the land. Even though I grew up in Lubbock and now live in San Antonio, Vistula was ‘home.’ I think my family saw that early on—not just my parents, but my aunts and uncles, as well.”

Art’s father, Archie Hall, who lives in Lubbock, recalls that his son and his own father, Robert Jr., did indeed have a special bond.

“Art was pretty young when my dad died, but they had a lot in common,” Archie says. “Now that Art is a grown man, I see mannerisms and things he does that are just like my dad, things Art would not remember. He walks just like my dad.”

So, it’s really not surprising that Art would want to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps and preserve the land to pass it along to his family one day. He has purchased land near and adjacent to the original property from relatives and descendants of the other families who first lived in Vistula, many of whom have sold it to Art at a discount to embolden his efforts and to help preserve the land.

“I never thought that much about that land until Art started working on it,” Archie says. “I grew up there, so living there was just a way of life. It was a lot of hard work. Working your own land was something I thought everyone did.

Actually, people who were trying to do something for themselves owned land.

Others were content working for someone else.

“My grandfather’s theory was, ‘If you want to be somebody, you had to own your own land.’ Also, to be a recognized person, you had to work hard, stay out of trouble and take care of your family.

Your word was your bond. My grandfather was highly respected in the community and the county.

“Both my dad and my grandfather had a philosophy of being honest. They believed in an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay. They taught us never to try to cheat anyone or cut them short. Being honest is something you owed to yourself and to God. You treat people the way you would like to be treated. My dad and granddad were peaceful people who believed in being good, righteous and just.

“In my father’s generation, the emphasis was on education. He wanted all the kids to be educated and to own their land.”

When Art was 11 years old, his father began involving him in the business of “the land.” Art sat in on phone conversations with attorneys and oilmen. Archie also made sure that his son reviewed legal documents so he would have an understanding of transactions and how valuable the land was. Maintaining the legacy and taking care of business are hallmarks of the family.

In fact, this special handling of inheritance now has been handed down to the sixth generation—Art and Stephanie’s daughter, Londyn, who is 11.

“Londyn loves the land,” Hall says. “Unfortunately, there are only a few kids or grandkids who are interested in the land. Many in the family now enjoy the city life.

Currently, there’s no place to stay on the property, but we have plans to develop a family lodge in the next couple of years—with air conditioning, bathrooms, TV and maybe a pool. I’m hoping that these amenities will help attract some family members back to visit the land more!

“I’ve made an effort to have Londyn around the land. She has been camping out there, and she goes hunting with me. I’m trying to teach her as much as I can about the land, what it means and the stake our family has in it. I want her to appreciate it, and I want to share it with her the way my dad and grandfather did with me.”

ntegrity and service are other important traits of the family.

Both Robert Sr. and Robert Jr. were deacons at Union Grove Baptist Church in Vistula. Cambra Palm Hall was the mission leader and home economics leader, in charge of canning and preserving foods, quilting and raising chickens from a hatchery.

Archie Hall went on to serve in the United States Air Force for nearly 22 years before he was Honorably Discharged (retired) while stationed at Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock. He later worked as the director of custodial services at Texas Tech University for 27 years before his second retirement.

Art Hall is a 1996 graduate of the Texas Tech University School of Law. His bachelor’s degree is from Harvard, 1993. He always has had a strong interest in travel, and after graduating with his law degree, he returned to live in Ecuador for a year.

He had lived there for a semester as an undergraduate student.

One reason Art loves Ecuador so much is that he is fluent in Spanish, thanks to his mother, Clarita Alcausin Hall, who is from the Philippines. Growing up with a multicultural background has contributed to his love of and identification with various cultures and people.

While he was a law professor in South America, his now-wife Stephanie, who earned her JD from Texas Tech in 1997, visited him in Guayaquil, and they became engaged.

“While I was visiting Art in Ecuador, we had an opportunity to go to a very poor village outside of the city,” she says. “The people were so kind and welcoming to us. I observed Art as he interacted with them. Because he spoke their language, Spanish, and I didn’t, he was able to relate to them in a way that I never could.”

After graduation, Stephanie received several job offers and chose to live in Dallas, working for Strasburger & Price, LLP. She was busy honing her legal skills while Art, completing his travels, ventured to the United Kingdom, where he earned an LLM (master of laws) degree from the University of Wales in 2000. Although he would have loved to visit China next, he and Stephanie were engaged to marry.

Art later was able to continue some of his travels as an invited member of the Remarque Institute, traveling to Turkey, Austria and London; the Young American Elite, traveling to Taipei; and the FrenchAmerican Foundation, traveling to France.

Stephanie had an opportunity to relocate from Dallas to the San Antonio branch of her firm after she and Art married. Art was already working in that city as an administrator at St. Mary’s Law School.

He ran for mayor of San Antonio in 2001, placing third of 11 candidates in the race. He was elected in 2003 to San Antonio’s City Council, District 8, the youngest person ever to serve the district and the first AfricanAmerican to serve on council from outside of San Antonio’s East Side.

“I don’t think of Art as a politician,” says Stephanie. “I think of him as a statesman. To me, he is capable of sitting with heads of state, having a highly intellectual discussion, and then just as comfortable sitting on the

curb with a homeless person, talking about how to improve that person’s life or community resources.”

Art owns artah Holdings, Inc., through which he manages his family’s non-ranch personal investments. He currently serves as district director of research, development for the Alamo Colleges Workforce Training Network, after holding the position of dean of workforce development and continuing education at St. Philip’s College, which is one of five colleges in the Alamo Colleges System. Although he is not technically working as an attorney, Hall says he feels his position affords him the opportunity to give back to the black community and the larger community in San Antonio.

In addition to his work in law, business and academics, Art is an associate minister at Grace First Baptist Church. He is an Eagle Scout and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. He has been an intern for a U.S. senator, a Massachusetts governor and a Texas Supreme Court chief justice.

Since graduation, Art has remained supportive of Texas Tech, having served on the Texas Tech Alumni Association National Board for several years. He currently is a board member on the Texas Tech Law School Foundation.

Stephanie has worked in various legal capacities for Valero Energy Corporation for the past 15 years. She has handled challenging regulatory work, but environmental litigation is a large part of her job.

The Texas Tech Cheer and Pom squads both earned titles on Friday (April 7) at the National Cheerleaders Association and National Dance Association Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championship in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The cheer squad captured the crown in the Co-Ed Cheer category, surging from third place behind Oklahoma State University and the University of Louisville after the first round to first place on Friday, capturing the first national championship in co-ed cheer in school history.

“This is amazing,” cheer coach Bruce Bills said. “I think it proves we can do this and we can compete with the best teams in the country. Our students do a great job with being an ambassador for the university all year, and this was their time to shine.”

Bills said the 20-member cheer squad had a couple of minor hiccups in its routine on Thursday (April 6) but was able to clean those up quickly and performed a clean routine on Friday.

“I just wanted them to go out, have fun and showcase their skills like I knew they could,” said Bills, who is in his fifth season as the squad’s head coach.

Other finalists in the cheer competition included the University of Missouri, the University of South Carolina, Fresno State University and New Mexico State University.

The pom squad followed suit by taking the crown in the Dance Jazz Division IA category, moving past Penn State in Friday’s finals.

The win was the completion of a yearlong journey for the pom squad, which finished second last year by just 14 points.

“We talked about this a lot this season, and our motto has been ‘We Before Me,’” said Erin Alvarado, the sixth-year pom squad head coach. “They really latched onto that, and last night we spent time talking to them about being competitive and being confident. Some things you can’t control, and some things you can, like chemistry and attitude. We feel our chemistry and our relationship with one another on the floor is what pushed us over the top today.”

That sentiment, she said, was reinforced by one of the comments from the judges, who complimented the pom squad not only on its dancing ability but its cohesiveness as a team.

The 30-member pom squad trailed only Penn State University after Thursday’s first round by less than .03 points. But with its routine on Friday, Texas Tech finished with a 9.706, while Penn State was second at 9.591.

“Last night we stayed up until after midnight fixing the things the judges told us to fix, and we focused on what we could control,” said Alvarado, who also complimented the work of choreographer Shannon Sandvik in helping the squad earn the award for most creative choreography as well.

The other finalists in the Dance Jazz Division IA category were South Carolina, the University of Massachusetts, Florida State University, Clemson University, the University of Connecticut, the University of South Alabama, Michigan State University, Arkansas State University and Western Michigan University.

“We made history today,” said Stephanie Rhode, Spirit Program director at Texas Tech. “It’s not often you have a dance team and the cheer squad win a championship at the same time.”

MAJOR ACTIVITIES IN WHICH YOU WERE INVOLVED AS A STUDENT AT TECH:

I was in the Goin’ Band from Raiderland (Band 1), Mortar Board and the Honors College.

WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR FONDEST MEMORIES FROM YOUR TECH DAYS? As a member of the Goin’ Band, I witnessed many unforgettable Tech football moments. The 2002 game against A&M in College Station is particularly memorable. That was my first time to experience a game at Kyle Field. It was also excruciatingly hot that day. We were crammed into these bleachers at the corner of the stadium that shook back and forth every time the Aggies swayed during the war hymn. At one point, the heat got so bad that ziploc bags full of ice were passed out to all of the band members to help us stay cool. Going into the fourth quarter of the game, we were down by at least a few touchdowns.

Tech made an incredible fourth-quarter comeback that included a couple of Kingsbury touchdown passes and one of Wes Welker’s trademark punt returns for a touchdown. The game lasted what seemed like an eternity, but it was worth enduring the blistering heat to see the Red Raiders beat the Aggies 48-47 in an amazing overtime win.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU’VE ENJOYED SEEING OCCUR RECENTLY AT TEXAS TECH? It’s been great to see the growth and improvements to the campus since I

was a student.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BOOK? It’s tough to pick just one. “The Great Gatsby” is one of my favorite novels. I love history books, and “Empire of the Summer Moon” by S.C. Gwynne is one of my favorites in that genre.

Architecture Design) Garland, Texas, recently published “Rhymes and Reason” along with Laurie Coker. The book is a compilation of 15 of Mickey’s watercolor paintings and the poems Laurie wrote for them. Laurie is an actor, poet, voiceover actor and substitute teacher in the Austin, Texas, area. Mickey is a retired architect and past president of the Southwestern Watercolor Society. He is also a member of the Richardson Civic Art Society. After retiring from a large architectural firm in Dallas in 2008, he picked up his watercolor brushes— which had been collecting dust for more 40 years—and began painting again. John Todd has a unique approach to poetry, often seeking inspiration in primary historical sources and family stories that relate the littleknown stories of the Southwest. Take for example, his poem “Papers in a Vanishing Room,” a persona poem from the point of view of Silvia Ridley, a Choctaw internee at the Hiawatha Asylum for Insane Indians. His research led him to learn more about the Hiawatha Asylum and Ridley herself. Ultimately, sections of an original newspaper story describing her incarceration were included in his poem. TOM HUTTON, M.D. (BA ’68 Zoology) Fredericksburg, Texas, published his memoir, “Carrying the Black Bag: A Neurologist’s Bedside Tales.” The book chronicles his 30-plus years of practicing medicine in West Texas and Minnesota as an internationally-recognized clinical and research neurologist and educator. His book has been named among the winners in the Feathered Quill Literary Awards. The Feathered Quill Literary Awards is a national awards program that celebrates excellence in publishing. “Carrying the Black Bag: A Neurologist’s Bedside Tale” was awarded the bronze medal in the “Best Debut Author” category. (BME ’47 Music Education) Brownsboro, Alabama, who is 89 years old, published “Sow It—Grow It—Know It—in a North Alabama Garden.” Mary Lou authored the book as a fundraising project for the nonprofit Master Gardeners of North Alabama. Her husband is ROBERT E. MCNABB (BS ’47 Electrical Engineering).

1949 WENDELL MAYES, JR., PH.D. (BS Electrical

Engineering) Austin, Texas, will be honored Aug. 10 at the Highlight of Texas Association of Broadcasters’ (TAB) Convention, the Awards Gala where Texas broadcasting’s top honors are presented. Wendell and his family owned radio stations in Austin, Brownwood, Fort Worth, Midland, Snyder, Victoria, the Rio Grande Valley and Oklahoma City for 50 years. He also had cable interests in Hereford, Corsicana and Snyder in Texas, and Pauls Valley and Choctaw in Oklahoma. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, where he was trained as a radio and radar technician and was assigned to Fighting Squadron 3 aboard the USS Yorktown in the Pacific. He was serving on the Yorktown in 1944 when the Third Fleet was caught in a typhoon that sank three destroyers. His ship and squadron were awarded the Presidential Unit citation and four battle stars after participating in the campaign to retake the Philippines, the battle of Iwo Jima, the bombing of Saigon, the first full-scale air raids on Tokyo by carrier-based planes and several other battles. He also has received a bachelor’s degree in computer science in 2002, a master’s degree in liberal arts in 2005, and an MBS in 2006, all from St. Edward’s University in Austin. In 2013, he earned his doctoral degree in applied management and decision science from Walden University. His wife is Mary Jane.

How One Registered Nurse Found Renewed Life In Lubbock

DaLynn Prather, registered nurse (RN) and Texas Tech alumna

Born and raised in Austin, a self-proclaimed Austinite, DaLynn Prather fell in love with Lubbock during her junior year of high school.

“I heard about Lubbock because of Texas Tech,” Prather said. “As juniors, my best friend and I came up here to visit, and we both ended up attending Texas Tech together.”

During those early years in Lubbock, Prather began to pursue a lifelong dream.

“All I ever wanted to be was a nurse,” she said. “My mother was a nurse. I watched her my whole life, and I wanted to be in the operating room just like she was. I felt very passionate about that.”

After attending [Methodist School of Nursing, now Covenant School of Nursing], Prather and her then fiance began discussing their plans for the future.

“I graduated nursing school and I was about to get married,” Prather said.

“My soon-to-be husband asked me where I wanted to live and we decided to go back to Austin. I went home to my family and bought a house a couple miles from my sister and my mother. When I left Lubbock, I remember thinking what a great place it would be to raise a family, not knowing I would ever come back.”

As it happened, 18 years later, Prather and her husband were presented with an opportunity to return to Lubbock.

“My husband was offered a job here,” Prather said. “We had two children at this point. My daughter was about to start junior high and the decision was made, now or never.

I knew there would be plenty of jobs for me with the strong health care industry in Lubbock.”

Prather now works as a registered nurse (RN) in the operating room at Grace Medical Center.

“I’ve worked at Grace since we moved back to Lubbock,” Prather said. “We do multiple types of surgeries here. We concentrate heavily on orthopedics, spine and urology. It is a very well-organized machine.”

While it was her husband’s job opportunity that played a major role in her family’s move, there were other elements that ultimately led the Prathers back to West Texas.

“One of the deciding factors was the cost of living,” Prather said. “It’s very reasonable to live here, and there’s minimal traffic in Lubbock. The laid-back lifestyle of Lubbock is awesome.”

While Lubbock has stayed true to its laid-back roots, Prather was shocked at the city’s growth.

“There was a good stretch of about 10 years where we didn’t come back to visit,” Prather said. “But coming back after all these years, it’s so much bigger. I tell everyone that says, ‘I’ve got to get out of here,’ no, you don’t. Everything you need is here.”

It’s something that Dr. Randy Hickle, founder and president of Grace Clinic, also notes.

“Lubbock is a wonderful, family-friendly city with a variety of options for recreation, entertainment and dining, along with top-notch school systems,” Hickle said. “Lubbock provides excellent professional opportunities with competitive pay and upward mobility career tracks, and the Lubbock medical community actually covers one of the largest geographic areas in the country, which includes more than 1.4 million patients.”

Couple quality of life with available jobs, and perhaps, that’s why more and more health care professionals are finding that now is the time to replant roots in Lubbock.

To make it easier to find open positions, the Lubbock Economic Development Alliance (LEDA) has stepped in to act as a conduit between job-seeking health care professionals and health care systems.

“The health care industry is a leading force in our local economy,” said Christine Allen, director of workforce development for LEDA. “LEDA has listened to our health care organizations, and we are assisting with the effort to recruit highly skilled, in-demand employees to our community.”

One way LEDA is accomplishing this task is through return2lbk.org, which features concentrated, valuable job openings in a variety of industries.

“Aside from available job openings, return2lbk.org offers information about life in Lubbock and video testimonials of former alumni/Lubbockites who returned to the ‘Hub City,’” Allen said.

In fact, Lubbock has been recognized nationally for its wealth of opportunity and was recently named one of the top 10 cities to find a job by Fortune.com. It also landed in the 68th spot on Millennial Personal Finance’s list of the Top 150 Cities for Millennials.

“We’ve always had an excellent quality of life in Lubbock,” said John Osborne, president and CEO of LEDA. “Now Lubbock is investing in a variety of ways to enhance it. In the last few years, we’ve seen dozens of restaurants and retail stores come online, and our local attractions continue to grow and expand, making Lubbock a well-balanced city that people want to live and work in.”

This is something Prather has experienced firsthand.

“The Lubbock lifestyle is fabulous,” she said. “The health care landscape in Lubbock is huge and constantly changing.

People come from all over to get health care here. There are so many avenues you can go, professionally. It’s right here, you don’t have to go anywhere else.”

And that’s exactly what the Prathers are planning on doing.

“I plan on staying here as long as the good Lord is willing,” she said. “We love the laid-back pace. It’s not the hustle and bustle of Dallas or Austin or Houston. If you have the opportunity, you should come try it out.”

In Memoriam ERIC EMMERSON STRONG ’98, Lubbock, a former staff member, died, March 11. He was the founder and director of Roots Historical Arts Council in Lubbock.

Strong had more than 25 years of experience in higher education, serving as director of support services at Texas Tech University. Strong joined Texas Tech’s Upward Bound program as a counselor in 1981 and eventually served as director from 1997 to 2007. He secured more than $7 million in grant funding for the program.

He held a master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Texas Tech and a bachelor’s degree from Prairie View A&M University, which he earned in 1973.

The Confederated Women’s Clubs of West Texas and the area chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., both named him “Man of the Year.” He was named “Texas Man of Distinction” by the National Business League of Texas.

The Texas Tech Alumni Association honored him as a “Top Techsan.” He placed first in the 2007 Writers League of Texas Oral Storytelling Competition.

His leadership led to the first-ever reenactment of Nolan’s Staked Plains Expedition of 1877, where a troop of 10th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers survived on the parched West Texas Plains, which led to his incorporation of Roots as a nonprofit arts and humanities organization.

He also founded the Caviel Museum of African-American History, the first African-American museum in West Texas, in 2015. He worked on the Historic East Lubbock Gateway beautification project. He also founded the annual Caprock Jazz Festival In January 2017, the Martin Luther King Commemorative Council of Lubbock honored him for his service to the community.

He is survived by his wife, MARIA STRONG ’94, ’97.

AMANDA MILLER , a junior, was selected from thousands of ap-

plicants to become one of 240 Goldwater Scholars in 2017, a year after becoming one of 256 students to receive an Honorable Mention for the same award. She is a biochemistry major minoring in psychology and biology, an undergraduate teaching assistant and an advocate for women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. As a member of the Honors College, she serves as a First-Year Experience lead mentor and president of Eta Omicron Nu, the Honors College service organization.

Miller works in an inorganic chemistry synthesis laboratory and wants to concentrate her research in the area of nanomaterials with significant medical applications.

MICHAEL DOERFERT was one of the 307 applicants who received an Honorable Mention. Doerfert is a junior chemical engineering major who plans to pursue a doctorate in biomedical engineering.

His research focuses on using polymer science principles to study and design pervaporation membranes. He plans to seek biomedical engineering knowledge and skills in order to focus on solving problems in health care an improving quality of life.

Texas Tech’s victory in the competition, which has been held each year since 1950, is the fourth in the school’s history and third in the past six years.

THE TEX A S TEC H University Meat Judging Team ended the spring competition season in March by dominating the field at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest.

The Red and Black teams from the Department of Animal and Food Sciences in the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources, took first and third place, respectively, with 4,194 points and 4,131 points.

The meat judging team finished the spring competition season undefeated, adding to its wins in Denver and Fort Worth.

Both the Red and Black teams finished in the top 10 in each category.

The Red team won the beef grading, lamb judging, overall beef and reasons categories and was second in beef judging, pork judging and specifications.

The black team took second in overall beef and reasons and was third in beef grading and lamb judging.

Individually, Texas Tech claimed the top four spots, five of the top six and six of the top nine. MADDY AINSLEY , a sophomore, finished first with 1,069 points for the Red team, just ahead of Red teammate APRIL MOLITOR , a sophomore, who was second with 1,066 points.

BEN MILLS , a sophomore, on the Black team, finished third overall with 1,055 points on the strength of a second-place finish in specifications and fourth-place finish in overall beef SAM SPRADLIN , a sophomore, finished fourth competing as an alternate by finishing in the top 10 in five of the eight categories. Rounding out the individuals in the top 10 were DUSTIN JONES , a junior (sixth), and GRAYSON BRINEY , a sophomore (ninth), both competing as alternates.

A F T E R W I N N I N G T H I R D place three years in a row, Knight Raiders, the Texas Tech chess team, took second place at the 2017 President’s Cup at the Marshall Chess Club in New York City.

The championship, also known as the Final Four of College Chess, included defending champion Webster University, Saint Louis University and the University of Texas-Dallas. It’s the fourth consecutive year and seventh time overall Texas Tech has competed in the national championship.

Four Knight Raiders collected points in the competition: International Master LUIS TORRES , a mechanical engineering major, finished with 2 points; International Grandmaster ANDRII BARYSHPOLETS ; International Master SERGEI MATSENKO , an interdisciplinary studies major and International Master PAVEL VORONTSOV , a computer science major each earned 1.5 points. Women’s International Master IRYNA ANDRENKO , a horticulture science major, and Woman Candidate Master CLAUDIA MUNOZ , a mathematics major from Wichita Falls, attended the competition as alternates.
