TE X A S TEC H L O S T another great one with the passing of Richard B. Dickey on March 27. Richard was a lifetime supporter of everything Texas Tech. He was one of those guys who was passionate about everything he did.

If you didn’t want to know how he really felt about something, you would be advised not ask. He might tell you even if you didn’t ask.

Although I had known Richard before I took this job, I got to know him a lot better as the years passed. He served on the board of the Texas Tech Alumni Association for 10 years, and Scoggin-Dickey furnished a car to the association for many years.

He came by frequently to offer me what he called “my free advice.” It was usually very good advice.

In 1983 he created a $10,000 scholarship in the Department of Art in memory of his late son David. He added an additional $25,000 to that in 2006.

Early in the Fall 2012, he came by my office and asked if the association might be interested in housing two bronze statues that he had donated to American State Bank. Apparently, when the bank sold to Prosperity Bank they no longer wanted to retain the bronzes. Richard said he had been to several other units at Texas Tech, and none of them was interested.

One was titled “Taking the Lead” by Rosie Sandifer ’74. The other was titled “Field of Blue” by George Lundeen. (See pictures on this page.)

I immediately told Richard we would be glad to house the sculptures. We placed them in the Twyman Vestibule at the southeast entrance to the building, with acknowledgments.

About a month later, he once again came to my office, this time with a check for $500,000 to add to his endowed scholarship.

Building a successful car dealership was not all Richard Dickey was about. He devoted 50 years of his life to his alma mater and to the city of Lubbock.

Richard was a lifetime supporter of Texas Tech University, serving on the Texas Tech University Athletic Council from 1973-1977. He and wife, Sybil, created permanent endowed scholarships in the School of Music for performance and education majors, and in the School of Art in memory of their son, David, for emphasis on photography. Many hundreds of students over the past 30 years have received assistance through these scholarships.

Richard belonged to the Southwest Rotary Club for 38 years, was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow and served on the board of directors for four years. As a member of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, Richard served as Athletic Affairs Committee chairman and on the Armed Service

Committee. He served also as volunteer for the United Way for 32 years, on the Speakers Bureau for nine years, and as chairman and board member of the Lubbock Better Business Bureau. He served on the board of directors for the Boy Scouts of America.

He was on the board of directors for the Lubbock Boys Club and served on the board of trustees for St. Mary of the Plains Hospital in 1985.

Richard was a 1943 graduate of Lubbock High School and soon after, he entered the United States Navy during WWII and served from 1944-1946 while stationed in Hawaii as a Bearcat jet mechanic. After completing his service in the Navy, Richard enrolled at Texas Technological College, completing his BBA and graduating in 1950.

While at Texas Tech, he competed in fencing and led Texas Tech to its first appearance in a national tournament while he was team captain. He was active in many social clubs including the Saddle Tramps and the Centaur Club.

Richard married his love, Sybil Marie Pierson, on May 19, 1951, and had two children, Linda Rae and David Mack Dickey (deceased).

PEOPLE ROBERT V. DUNCAN, PH.D., WAS NAMED VICE PRESIDENT FOR STRATEGIC RESEARCH INITIATIVES AND BEGAN HIS NEW JOB DUTIES APRIL 20. Duncan will focus on identifying and developing new research partnerships with external industries and national labs while in his new role. Under Duncan’s direction over the last two years, research awards increased by 39 percent.

Previously, Duncan was vice president for research and a professor of physics. He came to Texas Tech in 2014 from the University of Missouri.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY SYSTEM CHANCELLOR ROBERT DUNCAN ANNOUNCED JULY 7 THE OFFICIAL APPOINTMENT OF PROVOST LAWRENCE SCHOVANEC, PH.D., AS THE 17TH PRESIDENT OF TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY. The announcement followed a special called Board of Regents meeting and vote to affirm Schovanec as university president.

Schovanec officially began the role Aug. 1. Prior to his appointment, Schovanec served the university as provost beginning December 2013 and was interim president from July 2012 through March 2013.

Schovanec joined the mathematics faculty in 1982. He was named chair of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics in 1998. He served as interim dean of the College of Arts & Sciences from September 2008 through May 2010, when he was named dean.

He has received the President’s Excellence in Teaching Award and is a member of the Texas Tech Teaching Academy.

CLINT BOAL, PH.D., PROFESSOR IN THE NATURAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT IN THE COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES & NATURAL RESOURCES, is studying golden eagle movements and potential interactions with wind turbines. In the avian world, the eagle is known as the apex predator, meaning no other bird considers an eagle its prey. However, the eagle lives with manmade dangers, including wind turbines. With the need for resources other than fossil fuels, wind farms are growing rapidly in West Texas and New Mexico.

This situation has created a dangerous environment for the golden eagle. Boal, a member of the United States Geological Survey’s Cooperative Research Unit at Texas Tech, along with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Region 2 office and its Western Golden Eagle Team, are studying golden eagle movements and potential interactions with wind turbines. To track the eagle’s movements, researchers are capturing golden eagle chicks before they can fly and affixing lightweight GPS transmitters on their backs. The chicks are returned to their nests.

Their movements can then be tracked throughout the next several years. Golden eagles are not on the endangered or threatened species lists, but the species is protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. Boal noted there has been no real assessment of the golden eagle population in Texas since the 1970s.

STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF JOINED TOGETHER TO HELP BEAUTIFY TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY’S CAMPUS DURING THE ANNUAL ARBOR DAY EVENT. Arbor Day was held on Friday, April 29, starting in Memorial Circle with live music, free food and T-shirts. Participants beautified campus by taking part in mass plantings across campus. In 1938, Texas Tech University President Bradford Knapp initiated the university’s first Arbor Day celebration in an effort to enhance campus and build a sense of community. Arbor Day is an annual observance celebrating trees and was first observed in America in 1872. It is celebrated the last Friday of April and all 50 states have passed legislation adopting Arbor Day.

RESEARCHERS IN THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING IN THE WHITACRE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING ARE HELPING DEVELOP WASTEWATER TECHNOLOGY FOR USE IN SPACE. Andrew Jackson, Ph.D., a professor and associate chairman in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering, and Audra Morse, Ph.D., associate dean for undergraduate studies and a professor in civil engineering, along with Paragon Space Development Corp., have focused their research for most of the past decade on developing a system that effectively and efficiently eliminates waste products from water so it can be recycled into consumable drinking water. The department received a Phase I Small Business Technology Transfer award totaling close to $150,000 from NASA to aid in their efforts. This award will be used to develop the Integrated Wastewater Recovery Assembly (IRA.) The IRA will take wastewater and recycle it by reducing the need to pretreat wastewater with chemicals while eliminating the need for non-regenerable processes that are now in use. Researchers at Texas Tech are now running a full-scale reactor to test the recycling process, and eventually the reactors will be sent to the Johnson Space Center in Houston to be put into an integrated test with the post processor developed by Paragon.

THE MUSEUM OF TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY AND THE NATURAL SCIENCE RESEARCH LABORATORY ARE INTRODUCING A NUMBER OF ENHANCEMENTS TO THEIR COLLECTIONS, including a state-of-the-art liquid nitrogen storage system. This system is funded by the National Science Foundation. These freezers are used to house the frozen tissues of the genetic resources collection. This collection is used by researchers all over the world who study global biodiversity, the impact of humans on the natural world and how diseases are transmitted from human beings to nature.

THE WHITACRE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING EARNED A NATIONAL RANKING FROM PAYSCALE IN TERMS OF INVESTMENT FOR GRADUATES 20 YEARS AFTER EARNING THEIR DEGREE. Texas Tech ranked eighth for in-state students with a 20-year return on investment of $958,000 when compared to a four-year cost of attendance of $86,300. For out-of-state students, Texas Tech ranked 18 with a listed 20-year return on investment of $925,000 when compared to a four-year cost of attendance of $119,000.

ALTHOUGH THE GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY FOR THE NEW HONORS COLLEGE RESIDENCE HALL WAS SET FOR MAY 18, 2016, RAINY WEATHER MADE THE EVENT IMPOSSIBLE. Construction has begun, however, and the new $29 million, 81,000-square-foot residence hall will house 315 residents, all students in the Honors College at Texas Tech University. It will be the 19th residence hall on the Texas Tech campus and is located at 803 Flint Ave., southwest of the Rawls College of Business.

By Dorothy Chansky, Ph.D. Director, The Humanities Center at Texas Tech The Humanities Center at Texas Tech ended its first year with a bang and big plans for year two.

In April, the Center hosted Shakespeare scholar Marjorie Garber and actor/activist Anna Deavere Smith. Garber spoke about the future of Shakespeare education; Smith brought her signature one-woman-plays-all-the-roles performance work to the Allen Theatre. Smith is best known for her roles on “The West Wing,” “Nurse Jackie” and “Black-ish,” but she won her Guggenheim and MacArthur awards for her social activist work, which is based on interviews with Americans in hot-button issue situations. Both guests addressed the Center’s 2015-2016 theme, Synoptics, which was the DNA uniting multiple events and exhibits throughout the year that addressed divergent, often incompatible ways of seeing the same phenomenon.

The 2016-2017 theme is simply FUTURES. (“Wall Street sells them; science fiction writers imagine them; ordinary people plan for them. Futures.”) Guest speakers will include Jaron Lanier, author of “Who Owns the Future” and credited with popularizing the term “virtual reality”: Abby Smith Rumsey, author of “When We Are No More: How Digital Memory Will Shape Our Future”; and Rosi Braidotti, whose most recent book is “The Posthuman.”

Please mark your calendars for the 2016 Second Annual Alumni College. The event, held on Homecoming Weekend, is a chance to sample the work of current TTU humanities faculty.

This year, 10 professors will share their research in a series of short TED-like talks on subjects ranging from bilingual signage to the Roman Empire to a history of admissions quotas to girl culture to popular understandings of hormones in the United States. Join us on Oct. 15 at the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center, starting at 11 a.m. Complimentary breakfast will be available, and talks are come-and-go, so you’ll be out in time for the game.

Food brings people together. Whether a family sits down to dinner, a dating couple shares a pizza or a group gathers with a cake to celebrate someone’s milestone, enjoying food is something everyone does.

In the heart of Slaton, Texas, is a place that plays a major role in these celebrations by spreading the pure joy of good food.

The Slaton Bakery, founded in 1923, is located in the same place where it started, the corner of the town square. It has been in the Wilson family since they purchased the business in 1943.

The bakery was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2009, as part of The Texas Historical Commission’s Official Texas Historical Marker Program.

“I would say that the bakery is just about the oldest continuously-operating, familyowned bakery in Texas,” says Chad Wilson, son of current owners, Sherrell and Robin Sammons Wilson.

The first generation of the Wilson family to own and run the bakery was Barney and Ollie Mae Wilson. They taught their son, Sherrell, to bake and run the business, and when he married Robin in 1974, she became part of the work force, too.

Sherrell is a Certified Executive Pastry Chef and a Certified Master Baker.

Chad, a 2005 graduate of Texas Tech University with a degree in finance, and his brother, Bryce, a 2004 Texas Tech University graduate who is

an accountant, grew up in the bakery.

They often accompanied their dad to the business in the wee hours of the morning to start baking for the day.

“I have photos of us asleep on sacks of flour in the back of the bakery,” Chad says. “I just turned 33, but last fall, I got my 20-year plaque.”

Chad also points out that there are actually five generations of Wilson family members who have worked at the bakery. Chad wears many hats at the bakery.

He jokes about his background in finance: “I tell people I chose to work with a different kind of dough.”

Although he didn’t have a set career path after college graduation, Chad is not surprised he ended up in the family business.

“My senior year, my dad fell off the roof. He was cleaning out gutters, and he fell and shattered his elbow, so I had to step up and kind of take over for half a year. It took almost a year-and-a-half for him to heal to where he could actually use his arm again.

“It worked out. I was able to finish school and fortunately, just had a few wrapping-it-up classes my senior year.”

He graduated magna cum laude.

By the time he finished college, Chad was already so involved in the business that he chose to stay.

The bakery is known for its variety of drool-worthy treats, including wedding cakes, doughnuts, bread and pies, but a customer favorite is their cookies. Colorful thumbprint cookies disappear from the display shelves as quickly as they are placed there.

The bakery’s vanilla wafers and gingersnaps are so popular that the Wilsons decided to start marketing them to grocery stores.

“I do everything from wash dishes to make deals with grocery stores and stuff,” Chad says. “I do what I’ve got to do. My main part of the business is our vanilla wafers and gingersnaps. That’s really taken off.

“A friend of ours from Slaton is Kyle Lancaster (a 1999 Texas Tech graduate), with Kylito’s Salsa. We were the first store that sold his salsa, and we saw how well he did. He encouraged us to start putting some of our products in the grocery stores. We had people driving—believe it or not—a couple of hours in each direction just to get our vanilla wafers. We started noticing that and thought it would be a perfect fit for our first product.

“United Supermarkets and Drug Emporium in Lubbock both gave us a chance. We put the cookies there. Now we’re in more than 50 Uniteds and about 220 HEBs. All of them are great to work with. Another really great company we work with is Babe’s Chicken House of Dallas. They put our cookies in their banana pudding.”

The cookies are available in a few other outlets across the state.

Chad also enjoys visiting the stores that carry their cookies because, he explains, the stores are customers, too. He recalls a visit to an HEB in Victoria, Texas, where the staff treated him like a celebrity, something quite unexpected.

“Slaton, Texas, has become a familiar name in many households in Texas now that their vanilla wafers and gingersnaps have made their way into so many stores around Texas,”

“I tell people I chose to work with a different kind of dough.” says Barbara Hopper, director of economic development for the City of Slaton. “It has brought foot traffic into our downtown area when folks are traveling close to Slaton.”

In fact, that popularity has translated into a demand for more cookies and a way to produce them efficiently to keep up with the demand of 300 stores, as well as the bakery itself.

Chad says that when they first started packaging the vanilla wafers, they made batches in 20-quart bowls about once a week and put the cookies into a generic plastic bread bag with a little label. Now they make 10 batches a day in 144-quart bowls.

The result? On average, they make 150,000 wafers each day.

In the past, the bags of cookies were weighed and packaged manually, 100 bags in a day. Then Chad discovered a machine that does the packaging for them.

“I found this machine on YouTube,” Chad says. “You dump the cookies in a hopper, and it scoops them out and puts them in a bag for you. I showed Dad the video, and he told me to order it because we needed it. We now do 1,000 bags at a time. We’ve done up to 2,500 in a day.

“I like the efficiency of production. I’ve always been interested in that.”

Still, the philosophy of staying true to their products and not cutting corners is something Chad and his family emphasize as a cornerstone of their operation.

Cookies aren’t the only famous item at the bakery, though. The business produces cakes of all types and sizes for all sorts of occasions.

At the 2002 Annual Chocolate Fantasia in Lubbock, sponsored by the Texas Chefs Association, Sherrell won first place in the Chef Division and the People’s Choice Award as well as a perfect score by judges. That same year, in the professional division, Chad won a gold medal and Robin, a silver, for decorated cakes.

One of Robin’s talents is being able to write, clearly and in great detail, on a cake, as well as to transfer intricate designs onto cakes.

Lou Gamble of Slaton says she and her husband, Larry, had a Slaton Bakery wedding cake when they married in 1966. For their 50th anniversary reception, they went back to the bakery.

“There was absolutely no question that we’d have The Slaton Bakery make our anniversary cake,” Gamble says.

Slaton Harvey House Founded in 1911, Slaton, Texas, is a railroad town. The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad developed a division point for trains there, and the town began to grow.

The Fred Harvey Company built the Slaton Harvey House in 1912 as a place where train travelers could get hot gourmet meals.

The women who worked at the Harvey Houses, known as “Harvey Girls,” lived on premises and had strict rules about conduct and dress. There were a number of Harvey Houses in the southwestern United States in the early part of the 1900s.

For 30 years, until 1942, the Slaton Harvey House served countless travelers. When the operation ceased, the building remained a train depot until it was scheduled to be demolished.

Interested citizens formed a group to save the building. They began a campaign to renovate it.

Slaton Harvey House was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2007, as part of The Texas Historical Commission’s (THC) Official Texas Historical Marker Program.

Today, the beautifully appointed building serves as both an event center and a bed and breakfast. It has a large room for parties and four guest bedrooms.

Jessica Kelly, a 2009 Texas Tech graduate, manages Slaton Harvey House. She says that the guest rooms fill up during football season. When hotel rooms in Lubbock are full, people often are directed to the Harvey House. Many of those guests have become regulars who never want to stay anywhere else when in town for Texas Tech events.

“I had saved the cake topper from our wedding cake in a cedar chest, so we had them put it on the anniversary cake, too.

“Our family has always used The Slaton Bakery for special occasions. Growing up, my children had more cakes from The Slaton Bakery than I made for them.

Their cakes are a treat. When my daughter graduated from Howard Payne University, they made a cake with the university seal on it for her reception.

“They are just really, really good people. They have made such a place in the community. They take part in everything to make Slaton a better place.”

From the time the doors open through late afternoon, people continuously come into the business, buying tempting baked goods. The bakery also serves sandwiches. Everyone who comes in seems to be smiling and happy. They also seem to know everyone working in the bakery and vice versa.

“The Slaton Bakery gives our town a unique identity,” says Mayor D.W. “Dubbin” Englund, a 1971 Texas Tech graduate who is retired president of Englund Funeral Service and Chapel. “Everyone who moves away and comes back home has to go to the bakery. Tourists stop there. The Wilsons are very sincere with and very helpful to the public, whether they know them or not.

“They are a well-established family in this community,” he says.

Chad Wilson may keep baker’s hours, from early morning till evening, but he also has other things going on in his life. He and his wife, Jessica Pickens Wilson, have two miniature schnauzers, Biscuit and Gravy, who keep them entertained. They also enjoy traveling and

have visited Chad’s friend who works for the U.S. State Department in Switzerland. They have been on mission trips to Guatemala through their church.

However, a major interest is their hometown. Jessica, an accountant in audit services at Texas Tech University, also is from Slaton and shares her husband’s interest in their community’s history.

Several years ago, the couple, dating at the time, started a big renovation project. Chad purchased the Kessel Building, a former dry-goods store just off the square. Their plan was to turn it into wedding, party and event center.

“The day we took possession of it was after a big rain,” Chad says.

“We went over there, opened the door, and a big flood of water came out. We had a lot of work to do.”

The building now is an elegant venue for Slaton events, including Chad and Jessica’s wedding and reception in October 2015.

Chad is a member of the Slaton Chamber of Commerce. He also just completed four years as president of the board of directors of the restored Slaton Harvey House, which has become another popular spot for visitors and historians alike. (See sidebar.)

No matter how much the world changes, it’s almost certain people never will lose the pleasure they get from eating together and celebrating special—and not so special—occasions with food. The Slaton Bakery will remain a big contributor to the joy of food in West Texas and beyond.

The girl grew up on her family’s farm in rural Cameron, Texas, southeast of Waco.

When it came time to leave home for college back in 1996, she was expecting immense changes. Due to her academic success, she had her choice of universities. Because of its proximity to Cameron, many of her classmates chose Texas A&M. She couldn’t envision that as her collegiate home and says she felt pulled westward, toward Texas Tech. The beauty of the campus, the friendly people, the fact it was far from home, the Honors Program (now the Honors College) and the opportunities it presented—she saw Tech as a glittering opportunity and an excellent place to grow.

That girl who started at Texas Tech—Kelly Price Sudderth ’00, ’01—left West Texas five years later as a well-educated, well-traveled young woman with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting—magna cum laude—from the Rawls College of Business. As for her choice of a university, Kelly says she could not have made a better one.

“In addition to my parents and family, I credit the faculty at Texas Tech for shaping me into the person I am today,” says Kelly, a CPA, the chief financial officer of Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas, and owner/founder of The Sudderth Group. “Of course the education I received was exceptional. I was totally prepared for my career in accounting, and the non-business courses that I took helped round out the edges and made me more than ‘just an accountant,’ which has served me well, both personally and professionally. The faculty cared so much about us as people—and I think it set Tech’s program apart from others.”

Kelly says two bits of advice from Texas Tech’s KPMG professor in the Rawls College of Business, Herschel Mann, Ph.D., helped guide her career: “One, always make sure you are going ‘to’ something, not ‘away from’ something; and, two, ‘Always ask Miss America to dance. She may say no, but you won’t know until you ask.’”

“I have been blessed with a lot of opportunity in my career and life, and whenever we have a big decision in front of us, I always think of Dr. Mann’s advice,” she says. “It’s never led me in the wrong direction.”

“I can’t stress enough how exceptional my education was at Tech. For most of my career I’ve worked with folks who attended much ‘fancier ’ schools, and I have never felt that my education was inferior to theirs in any way.”

While pursuing her undergraduate degree, Kelly met her husband, David Sudderth. David grew up in Dallas and

attended high school at San Marcos Baptist Academy. His family also owns a ranch in Ozona, where he spent his summers.

Both Kelly and David were enrolled in the Honors Program and met while sitting on a committee for the student publication “Elysium,” a collection of work submitted by students that included drawings, poems, paintings and other works of art.

Prior to her final year at Tech, Kelly and David planned to backpack across Europe. Kelly, who minored in German, was enrolled in a semester-long study abroad program at Germany’s Hochshule Reutlingen (Reutlingen University) in Reutlingen during the fall of 1999, while David, who received his bachelor’s in history in 1999, planned to spend the fall living in Paris. The couple kicked off their summer in mid-May and traveled across Europe until Kelly was due in Germany.

“David rented an apartment in the Latin Quarter in Paris,” Kelly says. “He planned to live in Paris that fall before he began looking for a teaching job. We were able to visit each other often and we flew home to Texas together on Dec. 24.”

Once Kelly finished her degrees at Texas Tech, she and David married in May 2001 in Fredericksburg. They landed jobs in the San Antonio area and moved to New Braunfels in 2001.

“Like many accounting students, I was recruited into a ‘Big 5’ accounting firm,” she says. “I went to work at Deloitte in San Antonio, and later transferred to the Austin office. I wanted to work in a big firm, but in a small office, because I thought I would get to work on more exciting projects due to the smaller

staff. I was right, and it was a lot of fun. About three years into my career at Deloitte, my first Deloitte manager (who had gone to Tesoro Petroleum) called and asked if I would be interested in applying for a new position at Tesoro helping manage their domestic and international income tax compliance function. It was a great opportunity, so I grabbed it.”

During this time, David was teaching elementary school in bilingual classrooms in Seguin and New Braunfels. He helped launch the Spanish dual language program at New Braunfels Independent School District. While living in New Braunfels they had their first two of four children: Lily in 2003 in San Antonio and Joseph in 2006 in New Braunfels.

“In late 2007, I was working at Tesoro Petroleum in San Antonio,” Kelly says. “I really loved my job—it was challenging, fast-paced and I was learning a lot while getting regular promotions. However, David and I really felt that we wanted to raise our kids in a small town, and although my career was exciting, I didn’t feel I was doing enough to ‘help the world,’ so to speak.”

In March 2007 Kelly took a girls’ trip with her mother-in-law and sisters-in-law to Marfa—the trip would ultimately alter her life and career path.

“I had never been to Marfa before,” she remarks. “But I came home and told David I loved it.”

A few months later, Kelly came across a job posting for an accounting manager with Marfa’s Chinati Foundation.

“I jumped at it,” Kelly says. “I was the only applicant who had ever been to Marfa. I accepted the position and moved to

Marfa in March 2008 with our oldest two kids, with the third on the way.

David stayed behind in New Braunfels to finish the school year and to sell our house.”

Kelly says her decision to work for Chinati and living in Marfa was eye opening. She spent much of her time in college and in her career believing large corporations were superior workplaces. She had gone from working for two successful, high-profile companies, Deloitte and Tesoro, in one of the most populous cities in America—San Antonio’s population is about 1.4 million—to a remote West Texas town with a population of about 1,800.

Kelly found herself immersed in an entirely different culture—one that provided the opportunity to grow professionally in many different directions.

“When I started working at Chinati, it was a much smaller organization,” she explains. “Then we had a $1.2 million budget with eight full-time staff.

Today we have a $2.4 million budget, 19 full-time staff, 15 part-time staff as well as multiple capital projects underway. Fortunately for me, it was an exciting time to be at Chinati, because they were finishing a $10 million capital campaign for an endowment, and looking ahead to finish projects that had been on the back burner for a long time. Over the next eight years, I ‘grew’ with Chinati. We successfully navigated the financial crisis of 20082010, and it really gave the staff and board confidence that Chinati was ready to tackle projects that that been postponed for financial reasons—a permanent installation by California artist Robert Irwin, and the development of the first-ever master plan for the museum.”

With the 2010 retirement of Chinati’s founding director, the museum went through some fluctuations—the director hired to replace the founding director quit after only 15 months. In March 2012, the board appointed Kelly and two other colleagues as an “interim management team” while they commenced an international search for a new executive director.

“Our directive from the board was to continue to grow the museum’s programming and budget in spite of the vacuum of leadership, and we did just that,” she says. “In Summer 2013, the board appointed Jenny Moore as the museum’s director, and subsequently appointed me as the director of institutional advancement—I had been CFO since early 2011.”

Kelly began working with the new director to fulfill a $5 million capital campaign and complete the Irwin Project, a major building project directed

by California artist Robert Irwin, which was finished in mid-2016. She also helped raise more than half a million dollars for the master plan.

“It’s a remarkable achievement for a museum that is so remote,” she says.

“Chinati receives over 90 percent of its philanthropic support from donors who live outside the Trans Pecos region.”

Throughout the last three years, while traveling with Chinati Executive Director Jenny Moore, Kelly has had the opportunity to travel the world, visiting such places as Venice, France, New York, San Francisco and Hong Kong, among other locales, raising money for Chinati and building relationships for the museum. The support received internationally isn’t surprising to Kelly, who says that one-third of all visitors to Chinati are from overseas.

Once leaving Texas Tech, Kelly stepped into a world that differed greatly West Texas and Cameron, from corporate accounting to a life of international travel and art. She wants readers to know it’s the combination of her life’s experiences that have delivered her to where she is today.

“Looking back, I see how all of the opportunities we had as students— COBA Ambassadors, Chancellor’s Ambassadors, Honors College Mentors, etc.—really equipped us with the leadership and organizational skills as well as the flexibility to succeed in our careers. I can’t stress enough how exceptional my education was at Tech. For most of my career, I’ve worked with folks who attended much ‘fancier’ schools, and I have never felt that my education was inferior to theirs in any way.”

Established in 1883, Marfa is part of the last American frontier. Established as a water stop and freight headquarters for the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway, the town’s population has never exceeded 4,000 (it peaked at 3,909 in 1930).

Today’s estimated population hovers around 1,700.

The town, in northeastern Presidio County, lies closer to the Mexican border than it does to any major Texas city—it’s about 200 miles southeast of El Paso, 170 miles southwest of Odessa and just 60 miles from Ojinaga, Mexico.

Marfa means different things to different people, and the region can be viewed as nothing more than a vast emptiness, an expanse of desert. It can also be viewed as place of restoration for the soul.

Kelly aptly describes most of the region’s visitors: “There are two types of people who come to the mountains (of Texas): There are those who feel they’re leaving something behind—maybe the city and its conveniences and all of the action—and those who feel they’re coming home.”

For the area’s sightseers, there’s the Marfa Lights (or Marfa Ghost Lights or Marfa Mystery Lights, depending on whom you ask) east of Marfa on U.S. Route Highway 67 on Mitchell Flat. Best viewed from the Marfa Lights Viewing Center on U.S. Highway 90, 10 miles east of Marfa, visitors attempt to catch glimpses of the flashing colored lights that occasionally appear at night, southwest of Marfa. Viewings have been recorded as far back as 1883, however there is still no definite explanation about exactly where the lights originate or what creates them.

Marfa also is a draw for campers and hikers, those wishing to exchange, temporarily, their harried lives in larger cities for a quiet and isolated getaway.

Many visit Marfa for the art scene. There are around 15 studios/ galleries, the most famous being The Chinati Foundation, located on the former grounds of Fort D.A. Russell, and founded by minimalist artist Donald Judd (1928-1994).

Fort D.A. Russell was established in 1924 (called Camp Marfa until it received the official designation of Fort D.A. Russell in 1930) and closed in 1949. Used for a number of military purposes, it’s

most well known for its time as a cavalry fort. A ceremony marked the First Cavalry’s dismissal of their horses in 1933, a poignant event for both soldiers and civilians of Marfa. During the remaining years, the fort was used to further the United States’ efforts in World War II and stayed open just four years following the end of the war. By 1949 the fort was closed, the donated land was turned over to the city of Marfa and the fort was then used by civilians for housing and recreation for the next 20-plus years. Most of the fort’s buildings had fallen into disrepair when New York City-based artist Donald Judd purchased the 340-acre property with the help of the Dia Art Foundation.

Judd fell in love with the desert Southwest and traveled the area frequently in the late ’60s and early ’70s. His travels took him across the southwestern United States and Texas, where he ultimately discovered Marfa. In 1971 he rented a home in Marfa, a striking contradiction to the overpopulated and often-chaotic city he had called home. His vision was to create a space where he could house permanent works of art, both large and small, within an unrestricted framework. One of his most famous works is the “15 Untitled Works in Concrete,” (photo on facing page) permanently exhibited outdoors and running along the border of the Chinati property. The works were cast and assembled between 1980 and 1984. Chinati is a place Judd desired to see art displayed not in a studio or typical white-walled museum—where art is placed then frequently moved or sold—but in an unfettered setting that provides admirers with a sense of place—vast, open and endless.

Chinati is inextricably tied to New York City, with a board of trustees who reside around the globe. It is one of those places that defy explanation, you have to see it to understand it. You need to experience the entire setting: the fort-turned-340-acre-museum, Marfa, the region. You don’t go to Marfa for its conveniences, yet that’s what draws many to the desert town: the absence of conveniences. It’s an unusual mix of ranchers, day workers, teachers, dreamers and artists.

And somehow, it works.

While living in Marfa, Kelly and David welcomed two more children: Caroline, 2008, and Wesley, 2010. Both

were born at Big Bend Regional Medical Center, the hospital in Alpine, Texas. Giving birth at such a small hospital was another big switch for Kelly.

“I joke that as our family grew, the hospitals got smaller,” says Kelly. “I was super nervous to deliver Caroline at such a small, remote hospital. However, the care was great. They have a wonderful, caring staff. I was the only patient in the maternity ward, so we had everyone’s undivided attention.”

Planning for the future of their four children caused the Sudderths to assess their situation. While living in Marfa, David was the headmaster at a local private school. The couple loved raising their children in a small town; however, access to quality education was a priority for both Kelly and David, and Marfa’s remoteness limited opportunities. After researching small towns and their schools, they decided to move north, and in the summer of 2015 they relocated to Crested Butte, Colorado.

It wasn’t without a lot of soul-searching, and Kelly says she and her family still love Marfa. They still own their home there and have purchased land on which to build a second home.

Kelly is still CFO for Chinati and returns to Marfa for about a week each month.

In addition to her responsibilities with Chinati, Kelly started her own firm, The Sudderth Group. She has combined her experience as a CPA, a CFO and a fundraiser and created a business that caters to non-profits looking to streamline their organizations and raise money.

“I gained valuable experience as a professional fundraiser and am really enjoying coaching clients who are growing their fundraising programs,” says Kelly. “I love what I do. I get to help people who are working to solve the most important problems in our communities. I get to work with artists, scientists, academics, social workers, doctors, lawyers and teachers. David and I have lived in two of the coolest small towns in America. I’ve seen the most incredible contemporary art the world has to offer and I’ve learned so much that has nothing to do with accounting.

“I really want to dispel the notion that accountants are only ‘bean counters.’ In my experience, most people have a really narrow idea of what accountants do. I always tell people that when I am looking at financial reports, I don’t see numbers, I see stories. What’s really going on? What are the numbers telling us? There is a story there, and our job is to find it. As the chief accountant in a business or organization, you have a front row seat, and you are part of every major decision. It’s a really exciting place to be—our unique perspective, informed by our analytic minds—adds tremendous value. Too often, it’s an under-valued and under-utilized skillset in businesses and nonprofit organizations.”

Since living in Crested Butte, David has been commissioned to write a novel memorializing a young man who was killed in a drunk-driving accident. And while he’s busy with that, and Kelly is busy with her career, they work together on all fronts, especially being parents.

Kelly sits outside the Chinati Foundation offices, former barracks that were retrofitted to accommodate some modern conveniences.

“My husband deserves so much credit for making sure our lives are balanced and rich,” she says. “He is an exceptional father and without him, I could not have pursued the opportunities that I have. We’re a team.”

Another thing Kelly says she’s grateful for is that she and David are able to provide their four children with lives that are filled with travel, togetherness and adventure. They spend their summers traveling all over Texas, visiting family and enjoying time at the ranch in Ozona. Crested Butte not only is a winter wonderland, and skiing is a family affair for the Sudderths, but it’s a fabulous place for a family who loves the outdoors.

“Our condo looks out on the mountain,” she says. “You can walk two minutes and you’re at the base of the ski lift. There are so many outdoor opportunities so close to us…there is a lot of public land and it’s a privilege to live where you have thousands of acres to roam.”

Kelly talked about how she treasures the variety of her career and lifestyle.

“Do you know what a postage stamp quilt is?” she asked.

“It’s a quilt made up of tiny squares the size of postage stamps.

My aunt made me one, and it has been pointed out that that’s what my family’s life is like: a postage stamp quilt. And I love that idea.”

Love it or hate it, it’s here. The effective date of Senate Bill 11—also known as Campus Carry—was August 1, 2016. This new law allows faculty, students and staff to possess concealed handguns on campus as long as the carrier holds a Texas Concealed Handgun License (CHL), or new state designation for the same, License To Carry (LTC). In order to obtain an LTC, one must be at least 21 years of age. Beginning in Fall 2015, Texas Tech created a Campus Carry Task Force in order to provide input into the new policy regarding Senate Bill 11/Campus Carry. It has been noted that while not every person on campus is pleased with the passage of Campus Carry, the entire campus was provided an opportunity to be heard through efforts of the task force.

Private universities such as Baylor and TCU were allowed to opt out of SB 11. All private institutions but two have thus far decided not to allow campus carry. Every other public university in Texas must have complied with the new law by Aug. 1. An informative link has been created by The Dallas Morning News where viewers can visit the DMN site and view their Campus Carry Tracker that lists every public university and where guns may be carried on each public university campus in Texas*.

As for Texas Tech, the university prepared well in advance of the effective date and has in place official Operating Policy and Procedure, OP XX.XX: Concealed Carry of Handguns on Campus**. As for exactly where guns may be carried, it’s probably easier to point out places they can’t be carried—or “exclusionary zones.”

Guns are not allowed at any university sporting event or the following: The Kent R. Hance Chapel (located east of the Texas Tech Alumni Association’s McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center), The Robert H. Ewalt Student Recreation Center (Rec Center), designated research labs, anywhere alcohol is served and most dorms. The exceptions for the dorms are when a student resides in an individually assigned room or in a suite-style or apartment-style residence hall, which are: Murray, Carpenter/Wells, West Village, Talkington and Gordon. Students also must store firearms in a university-approved gun safe in their room.

Other exclusionary zones include premises where professional counseling services are provided on campus and are as follows: Family Counseling Center, Burkhart Autism Center, Student Wellness Center, Psychology Counseling Center, Child Development Research Center and the Center for Study of Addiction and Recovery.

For further information, the Texas Tech University Human Resources Department created a list of FAQs***.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, in order for a Texas resident to obtain a Texas license to carry a handgun, there are a number of eligibility criteria: applicants must be at least 21 years of age (unless he or she is active duty military) and must meet federal qualifications to purchase a handgun. Applicants must complete four to six hours of classroom training, pass a written examination, pass a proficiency demonstration (shooting test) and submit to fingerprinting. The standard fee for an original license is $140, and the license is good for four years.

The standard fee for license renewal is $70 and the renewal is good for five years. Factors that prevent the acquisition of a license include felony convictions, some misdemeanor convictions, certain pending criminal charges, chemical or alcohol dependency, certain types of psychological diagnoses and protective or restraining orders.

I reached out to the Texas Tech University President Lawrence Schovanec for additional information regarding Campus Carry and how it affects Texas Tech.

1. DID TEXAS TECH OPPOSE SENATE BILL 11/CAMPUS CARRY? As an institution,

Texas Tech did not oppose SB11.

2. WHY NOT? Although there were differing faculty, student and staff opinions regarding the implementation of SB 11, Texas Tech was committed to abiding by the spirit and intent of Campus Carry.

3. WHAT DO YOU WANT ALUMNI TO KNOW ABOUT THIS NEW LAW AND HOW IT WILL AFFECT TEXAS TECH’S CAMPUS? A priority has always been to develop campus poli-

cies that comply with the law, but which promote the highest level of safety for our students, staff and faculty. We will continue to provide educational opportunities and support systems that will ensure the best safety practices are in place and which also address the special needs of those affected by the bill.

4. WHAT KIND OF FEEDBACK HAVE YOU RECEIVED FROM THE TEXAS TECH COMMUNITY REGARDING THIS CHANGE? There has been a moderate response from the TTU

community. Those who personally oppose the presence of guns on campus are not satisfied with the outcome, but in general, comments have recognized the need to abide by the law and appreciated the process that included opportunity for input from stu-

dents, staff and faculty. A new head football coach and his assistants came to Texas Tech University in the spring of 1951. The approximately 50 players who started that spring training wouldn’t easily forget that long ago spring.

New Texas Tech University Head Football Coach DeWitt Weaver and assistants Wade Walker, Jack Mitchell, Bobby Goad, Wyatt Posey and Bob Wood made an impression every day with their requirements for practicing and playing football.

Regardless of age or past performance, all were recruits to the new coaches. We scrimmaged 17 days in a row to determine who would play for the new crew of coaches in the fall. The dropouts and broken plates exceeded the number left over for the fall. The remainder of the 1951 team was composed of freshman and junior college transfers.

The season was a winning one, with Coach Weaver’s win/loss record standing at 6 and 4—quite an achievement for a first year coach. Texas Tech was the 1951 Border Conference Champion, which resulted in an invitation to the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas.

The Texas Tech team won the bowl game 25-14 against the College of Pacific Tigers from Stockton, California (Pacific no longer has a football team and played its last game in 1995). This bowl victory was the first for Texas Tech. A 7/4 record was a significant achievement for the team and the coaches.

Perhaps all teams are forgotten, except by the players. National champions are remembered longer, but even those often fade as the next year makes or selects a new champion. However, the players do not forget and each player will remember the games and times differently as we serialize our stories. All will embellish the good and sometimes even the bad. Without pictures and scores written down, we will have some variation in the score, but not who won.

Time has passed since 1951, and so have many of the players. But those of us still alive want to remember our coaches and fellow players, and we want a place in the Texas Tech annals of sports as the first bowl champion.

Since this story of that 1951 team is based on my experience, I shall include personal snippets from time to time.

I made it through the spring training and weighed 175 after the spring game. I had started spring practice at more than 190 pounds. I suppose my weight change is a symbol of the difficulty of that spring.

The summer after spring training, I received a job at General Dynamics on the “graveyard” shift. The schedule and money made me consider Davis, left, confers with his teammates. another way to get my college education. I thought I would go to TCU to finish my degree in chemistry and work nights at General Dynamics to pay for tuition and other expenses. After two weeks of almost no sleep, I chose to go back to Texas Tech if they would have me. I called Coach Walker and he said, “Get on the bus” with an added exclamation phrase. I was on the bus (Fort Worth to Lubbock) the next morning. I was grateful for the opportunity to again play football in exchange for an education. Playing football had been my choice for getting an education since the eighth grade. My first spring training had been with the Purcell, Oklahoma, Dragons while still in the eighth grade.

During the 1951 spring training I had not yet made the first team. That fall I made first team right tackle. The fall practice was more of the same tough practices, two a day, with the added blood pit, one on one. Fighting one on one to see who could beat an opponent through the blood pit where only one could pass through at a time and sprints of 50 and 100 dashes were on the agenda every day. Fullblown scrimmages came in between the one-on-one and the dashes.

ollis Davis, who is 85 years old, was a member of the Texas Tech football team that won the 1952 Sun Bowl. He received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Texas Tech in 1953, an MBA in 1962 from TCU and he served two years in the U.S. Navy. He lived the first 14 years of his life in a farmhouse in Oklahoma. Davis’ career spanned 39 years wherein he worked as a materials engineer in the aerospace industry. He wrote and published more than 30 technical papers about materials and development for rocket motors. He was vice president of research at Kaiser Aerotech when he retired in 1995. He is retired but continues to consult in the rocket industry. He also writes poetry and memoirs, attends and leads discussion in literature classes, plays golf and fishes. He now lives in Trophy Club, Texas.

Davis recalls his time playing football at Texas Tech as full of highs and lows.

“The beginning experience for me at Texas Tech did not lead me to believe that I would be playing for another set of coaches in my third year,” he says. “I first arrived at Texas Tech in the summer of 1949. It was a recruiting visit. Allie White, the new freshman coach, had visited me in Fort Worth (Allie White was one of the ‘Twelve Mighty Orphans’ a story by Jim Dent published in 2007.). I was impressed because he gave me a round trip airplane ticket to Lubbock.

I was impressed by the ride on a DC-3, the civilian version of the World War II C-47. He was trying to impress my mother also. He did. However the rest of the story was that Del Morgan was not so impressed, so he took my return ticket by airplane and sent me home on the bus. The ups and downs of that trip represented my relations with coaches the first two years at Tech. I believe that the change in coaches in 1951 enhanced my time at Texas Tech as a student and a football player.”

THAT WE MIGHT HAVE A CHANCE TO PLAY IN A BOWL GAME DID NOT ENTER OUR MINDS IN SEPTEMBER OF 1951, WHILE TRYING TO MAKE IT THROUGH TWO-A-DAY PRACTICES, WITH ONE BEFORE BREAKFAST TO BEAT THE HEAT. That we might have a chance to play in a bowl game did not enter our minds in September of 1951, while trying to make it through two-a-day practices, with one before breakfast to beat the heat. The 1951 team may be the forgotten team, but none of the players on the field that spring and fall will ever forget those hard times. But, I believe that difficult preparation shaped our team for the winning of the first bowl game for Texas Tech. Remembering how we got there enhances the memory.

We received an invitation to play in the Sun Bowl after a season of six wins and four losses. The most important victory that year was the defeat of TCU. The score was 33 to 19. We, the first team, went to the showers when the score was 33 to nothing. Bobby Cavazos had scored three times in three quarters. The season started with a 46 to 7 win over West Texas (West Texas A&M).

The next game we were beaten by Texas A&M 20 to 7. This was followed by a close call defeat by Houston 6 to 0. I believe this was the only team we played in 1951 that knew how to defend against the “split T” offense that Coach Weaver brought to Texas Tech. We were on the three yardline when the game ended. Then came the TCU game mentioned above. I believe that this was the most important game of the year. We had proved that we could compete, but this proved we could win.

t the time of the 1952 Sun Bowl, Texas Tech was part of the Border Conference. At the time, most of the universities went by different names, which are in parentheses. The eight colleges that comprised the Border Conference in 1951-1952 were: University of Arizona (Arizona), Northern Arizona University (Arizona State Teachers’-Flagstaff), Arizona State University (Arizona State Teachers’-Tempe), New Mexico State University (New Mexico A&M), University of Texas at El Paso (Texas Mines), Hardin-Simmons University, West Texas A&M University (West Texas State’), and Texas Tech University.

Baylor beat us 40 to 20 with their All-American quarterback Larry Isabell who was 10 of 11 passing in the first half. We played our first conference game against Arizona: Texas Tech 41, Arizona 0. We won our next conference game: Texas Tech 27, Texas Western 7.

The next game was a disappointment as we lost to Tulsa 21 to 14. Tulsa had a strong team and a tackle that I had difficulty blocking: Jim Pruett, who later played pro football. On one of our “kick offs” I received a high/ low block, which gave me cracked ribs. The trainer taped me up tight, so much so that I could not breath on the airplane ride home, so I ripped it loose in the plane’s restroom. I was ok by the next game.

We beat New Mexico, a conference foe, 60 to 14. The next game was also a conference game against HardinSimmons. The winner of this game was to be invited to the Sun Bowl. We won 28 to 21. Coach Weaver gave the players a vote to see how many wanted to play in the Sun Bowl. The majority wanted to play and, without exception, we were all glad we got to play in the first bowl game win for Texas Tech.

The College of Pacific was our opponent. They had not seen the split T, which helped our blocking schemes considerably. I do not know about the left side of the line, but on the right side with Buddy Barron, Lewis Crossley and I, the three of us had a field day against a defense that outweighed us, Sandy Welton followed our blocking into the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown.

It was Tech’s first Bowl game win after 25 years. It was only the first of many more to follow. Those of us still alive relish and often relive the memory of that special bus trip to El Paso and the win.

To assist my memory and viewpoint, I reviewed the post-game write ups in the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal of 1951 and the January 2, 1952 issue. Joe Kelly was the only reporter that I remember meeting. He was the sports editor for the Avalanche-Journal. It was predicted that Texas Tech would not have a chance to win the conference in 1951. We had a new system to learn going from “tight T blocking” to “split T blocking” in one spring training. We learned it well enough that it worked on nine of the 10 teams we played that fall of 1951. It worked well in the Sun Bowl of 1952 also.

It is my opinion that the new coaches and the new system affected the 1952 Sun Bowl champions. All team members were and are important, but perhaps the most important to the team were the contributions of Aubrey “RED” Phillips, Junior Arterburn and Gerald “Soda Pop” Price. The close game losses of the 1952 season demonstrated how important these three players were to the team of 1951. The bowl win should not be forgotten and neither should these three outstanding contributors.

run to the College World Series over the last three years earned the Red Raiders a No. 4 national ranking July 1 in the final poll conducted by D1Baseball.com.

It is the highest final ranking in school history for the Red Raiders, who concluded the season 47-20 overall after picking up their first ever College World Series win with a 3-2 victory over top-seeded Florida.

The Red Raiders’ previous highest finish nationally was eighth following both the 1995 and 2014 seasons. The 2014 season marked Tech’s first trip to the College World Series as the Red Raiders are one of seven programs nationally to advance to Omaha twice in the past three years.

Prior to heading to Omaha, Tech claimed its first Big 12 regularseason title since 1997 as the Red Raiders clinched the conference crown before the final weekend of league play even began. Tech finished 195 overall against Big 12 foes thanks in part to a 5-1 mark against the league’s other two College World Series participants—Oklahoma State and TCU. Tech’s 47 victories marked its third-most in school history and its most since 1996 when the Red Raiders picked up 49 wins. It was also Tech’s second 40-win season over the past three seasons.

In addition to being ranked in the D1Baseball poll, Tech was also picked fifth nationally by Collegiate Baseball, Perfect Game and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) as well as sixth in the USA Today Coaches’ poll and seventh by Baseball America.

Texas Tech Announces New Clear Bag Policy

New bag policy will limit the size and type of bags entering all Texas Tech venues

Texas Tech Athletics will implement a new clear bag policy that will provide a safer atmosphere for all fans as well as significantly speed up the entry process into all venues.

The new clear bag policy will limit the size and type of bags that may be brought into any Texas Tech athletic venue. Fans will be able to bring the following style and size bag, package or container into the venue:

Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12 inches x 6 inches x 12 inches.

(Official Texas Tech team logo clear plastic tote bags will be available through The Matador and United Supermarkets.)

One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar).

•

Small clutch bags, approximately the size of a hand, with or without a handle or strap can be taken into the venue with one of the clear plastic bags.

•

An exception will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection.

•

The following items will be prohibited from entering any Texas Tech athletic venue: purses larger than a clutch bag, coolers, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, cinch bags, non-approved seat cushions and chairbacks*, luggage of any kind, computer bags, camera bags, diaper bags or binocular cases.

•

The new bag policy is intended to allow fans to enjoy pregame activities in the approved tailgate areas and then enter the venue at a much smoother pace. Texas Tech Athletics will continue to allow items such as binoculars, cameras (no long lenses) and smart phones into its venues.

The Texas Tech soccer program opens the 2016-17 academic year on Aug. 19 when the Red Raiders host New Mexico at the John Walker Soccer Complex.

LAURO F. CAVAZOS, Ph.D. (BS ’49 Zoology,

MA ’51) Concord, Massachusetts, wrote a book about his life’s work, “A Kineño’s Journey: On Family, Learning, and Public Service.” “Kineño” refers to Los Kineños, which translates to “King’s people,” a name given to the expert stockmen and horsemen who worked for Captain Richard King on the legendary King Ranch in South Texas.

Lauro is a descendant of Mexican citizens who worked on the ranch in the 19th century and he was born on the King Ranch near Kingsville, Texas. The book follows his career, including his tenure as the fourth Secretary of Education in Ronald Reagan’s administration. He was the first Hispanic appointed to a position in an American Presidential Cabinet and in that role, he insisted all American children be educated to their fullest potential. Lauro F. Cavazos served as president of Texas Tech University from 1980-1988. The book may be purchased on Amazon.com.

FRANK D. SIKES (BA ’67 Political Science) Lubbock, authored “West Texas Middleweight: The Story of LaVern Roach (Sport in the American West).” The hardcover book was printed by Texas Tech University Press and chronicles the boxing career of LaVern Roach, a skinny kid from Plainview, Texas, who rose from obscurity to popularity as a boxer in the 1940s, ultimately dying in the boxing ring during a televised match. Readers can follow the boxer’s life as an amateur brawling in West Texas, to his enlistment in the Marines and subsequent success as he captained a successful military boxing team, to appearing in fights at Madison Square Garden. Frank served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant and had a career in corporate management, sales and business as a residential realtor and residential real estate appraiser. BRENDA WEST COCKERELL (BSE ’77 Elementary Education) Dallas, Texas, is a philanthropist and former educator who recently completed her first children’s book, “In Grandma’s Garden.” The book was inspired by childhood memories of days spent among the flowers in a grandmother’s garden. Written in rhyming couplets with wistful illustrations, it captures the contentment, peace and safety of being alone in a vibrant garden. The book is a tribute to Holly Horton, a former educator and friend of Brenda’s, who died of breast cancer in 2009. All proceeds from the sale of “In Grandma’s Garden,” will benefit breast cancer research, educational scholarships and special needs of the community through The Beacon Family Foundation, a non-profit that provdes resources for families struggling with loved ones fighting cancer. D. COURTNEY SILBERBERG (BA ’83 Advertising) Woodland Hills, California, and his wife Jacquelyn Silberberg, co-authored “Fierce Thunder,” a book about a mountain biking vacation that goes terribly awry in the Mexican jungle. The book originally was a screenplay they adapted to a novel. The Silberbergs combined their life experiences, real events and their imaginations to create a book that combines the beauty of Mexico’s jungles and beaches with the danger of drug cartels and militia. The novel follows a small group of vacationers who stumble onto a massacre—sparked by the drug trade and antique gold coins—between cartel rebel forces and militia.

Before becoming an author full time, Courtney was a vice president of production for Gladden Entertainment. He and his wife have their own screenplay company, Mesquite Entertainment.

KAREN SNEAD PARTEE (BA ’94 Journalism) Marshall, Texas, wrote a book based on her experience of raising a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, “Wandering in the Wilderness—A Journey of Me, My Son, and His ADHD.” In 2010, Karen found her life as a mother spiraling out of control when her three-year-old son was asked to leave the first of three preschools, just days after being formally diagnosed with severe attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Two years into a four-year struggle, Karen began journaling about her family’s experiences coming to terms with the uninvited guest in their home. In her darkest hour, she would come to learn that only through her faith could she find peace and understanding in the face of a condition that complicates the mind. Karen is a financial marketing executive and ADHD advocate. She is married to Bryan, and their son, Noah, is now a straight-A student in the third grade. Karen’s book may be purchased on Amazon.com.

THOM VINES (M.Ed. ’92 Education) Lubbock, recently had his sixth book published, “The Spear of the Centurion.”

A Christian-based fiction novel, “The Spear of the Centurion” follows the centurion who speared Christ, then guarded Christ’s tomb. When Christ’s body disappears, Pilate orders the centurion’s arrest, and the man flees. The spear the centurion possesses is believed to hold special powers, and the centurion hides the spear along with his third and final testimonial. Two American archeologists find the manuscript in 2030 following an earthquake and proceed to hunt for the other two manuscripts and the spear. Thom is a former history teacher and is the retired deputy superintendent of Lubbock-Cooper schools.

Engineering, MS ’62) Phoenix, Arizona, received the Pioneer of National Reconnaissance award from the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). This honor recognizes individuals who have made significant impacts on the discipline of national reconnaissance. Porter developed the control moment gyros (CMG) for stabilizing, maneuvering and controlling the attitude of large spacecraft. The CMG technology led to the development of more agile NRO satellites, affording increased collection capacity, improved pointing performance and longer mission life. His work and mentorship was active in developing many members of the next generation of NRO engineers. The NRO is a joint Department of DefenseIntelligence Community organization responsible for developing, launching and operating America’s intelligence satellites to meet the national security needs of our nation. His wife is Donna.

1964 T. JOHN WARD (BA Chemistry) Longview, Texas, a former federal judge for 12 years, was recognized on The National Law Journal’s Intellectual Property trailblazers list as the leading innovator of intellectual property law in the nation.

Judge Ward earned this title for his work in patent disputes and his previous judicial role in helping to establish rules that have made the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas one of the top patent litigation jurisdictions in the nation. He is now part of Ward, Smith & Hill, PLLC, a law firm specializing in commercial litigation, intellectual property law, oil and gas matters, bad faith insurance claims and serious personal injury claims. 1995 KEVIN LEARNED (Ph.D. Philosophy) Boise, Idaho, was elected to the national board of Angel Capital Association, effective July 1. ACA offers professional development, public policy advocacy and significant benefits and resources to its membership of more than 13,000 accredited investors who invest individually or through 240 angel groups, accredited platforms and family offices. Learned is an experienced entrepreneur, academic manager and angel investor. He has been an active angel investor, is past president of the Boise Angel Alliance, an investor in and administrator of its three angel funds and a partner in Loon Creek Capital Group, which assist communities in creating angel funds. He has been involved with angel funding of more than 30 companies that have created more than 375 jobs in the Treasure Valley. Kevin is a certified public accountant who co-founded Learned-Mahn, a Boise software com-

pany that supplied software nationwide to the banking and hospital industries.

After earning his doctoral degree, Kevin was a college professor and later associate dean of the business school at Boise State University and was the president of the College of Idaho. FOU R TEX A S TEC H University finance students competed in the 2016 Community Bank Case Study Competition hosted by the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS). This year was the second for the competition. CHRIS HRESKO, JESSE KIZEWSKI, ERIC LAMM and SAM MOORE competed against 30 other teams from business schools across the country. The Texas Tech team analyzed the practices and lending efforts of AIM Bank in Levelland. They compiled a 25-page paper and a 10-minute video about their findings and the bank’s operations, as well as their recommendations.

Of the 23 teams entered, Texas Tech made it to the semifinals. Each team member received a $500 scholarship from the Texas Tech School of Banking.

THE TEX A S TEC H University School of Law moot court program finished the 2015-16 season ranked No. 1 in the nation, according to rankings compiled by the University of Houston Law School’s Blakely Advocacy Institute.

By virtue of its No. 1 ranking, the Texas Tech moot court team will enter the 2017 National Championship competition in January as the top team, garnering 119.5 points on a scale that ranks results from various competitions, some weighed as more prestigious than others and thus awarding teams more points for their results.

The top 16 teams in the rankings will advance to the national championships in Houston next year.

Texas Tech finished the year with five national championships, five regional championships, eight national finals, five semifinals, three quarterfinals and 13 individual best brief and oralist awards.

ANGELINA BENCOMO has been named Texas Teacher of the

Year by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in home economics communications at New Mexico State University and a master’s degree in education from Boston University. She is pursuing a doctorate degree in family and consumer sciences (FCS) at Texas Tech University.

LEXIE HERDT , a graduate student in the Department of Geosciences, Atmospheric Sciences group, is one of almost 200 students from the United States who earned the East Asia and Pacific Summer Institute (EAPSI) Graduate Student Award, an eight-week grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to conduct research overseas. She spent the summer in Seoul, South Korea, to demonstrate various mtitgation strategies for heat-related illnesses.

HUNTER THOMPSON , A senior kinesiology major in the

Department of Kinesiology & Sport Management, was a member of the USA National Team in cheerleading, which won four first-place awards at the International Cheer Union 2016 World Cheerleading Championships last spring in Orlando, Florida. The USA National Team won gold in Team Cheer-Hip Hop, Team Cheer—Freestyle Pom, Coed Premier, and All Girl Premier. Thompson is the fourth all-time member of Texas Tech Cheer to be selected for the U.S. team.

CHALANI PREMATILAKE and SARA BIESIADNY , graduate students in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, won top awards at the Conference of Texas Statisticians 2016, held at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, last spring. Prematilake won first place for Doctoral Poster Presentation. Biesiadny won Best Poster Presentation in Applied Statistics.

Meat Science Academic Quiz Bowl Team became National Champions at the 69th Reciprocal Meat Conference (RMC), defeating Colorado State University in the final round, Summer 2016 in San Angelo, Texas. It was the second straight national championship for the Texas Tech team and eighth title since 2003. Tech also won in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2014.

NATHAN TAPP, a recent graduate, won the doctoral division, while KEELYN HANLON received honorable mention in the master’s division. Undergraduates DARBY GONZALES and ERIN BEYER were honored by the AMSA for outstanding academic achievement and leadership in the meat science industry. Texas Tech took top honors in the undergraduate division with the team of CLAY BENDELE, CODY SHANNON and TOMMY FLETCHER.
