EDITOR’S NOTE: “Aggie Grove” was not named in honor another university; it was dubbed Aggie Grove because the area was once used to graze sheep and was a sort of classroom for agriculture majors, who were, way back when, referred to as “Aggies,” a derivative of the word agriculture. In the past, the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources held an annual “Aggie Pig Roast,” at which distinguished alumni were honored. Today it’s just known as “Pig Roast.” Also, the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources honored outstanding students monthly and awarded them the “Aggie of the Month” honor. Aggie Grove was, at one time in Texas Tech’s past, a line of trees that ran from the current site of the West Village Dorm to University Avenue. Today, all that remains are the trees in front of West Village, and a historical marker recently placed there explains the significance of Aggie Grove.

Hello Jean Ann/Jennifer, This inquiry is specific to the recent article “Texas Tech’s Newest Dorm: West Village” (Volume 68, Number 01), credit: Aubrey Reinhardt.

Since I observed Aubrey is an intern I do not have her email alias—please feel free to forward this message to her and/or any other parties as appropriate.

I would first note I appreciated the article—as my friends and I first noticed the new dormitory structure during a visit on Homecoming weekend/for a Tech Football game (vs. Kansas) in Fall 2014. It is a large, obvious new addition (to campus, right off the road) that my friends and I were certainly curious about.

Most confusing and/or curious however—is the reference to the “Aggie Grove.” (Displayed on Map (page 26-27); Described in text (page 29). I appreciate the context provided on how the trees were planted in 1930’s—but there’s a pretty big (in my opinion) lack of context provided in the description regarding the name of the grove itself. (“Aggie?”) Really? Is that correct?) I am highly doubting this has been called “Aggie” grove since the 30’s—but please correct me if I’m wrong. (i.e., I’d never heard that).

Assuming it was recently named “Aggie”—my general question to our administration would be why, and what is the context of naming *anything* on our campus after our friends in College Station (simply on general policy, i.e., there’s a reason Will Rogers and Soapsuds points a certain direction!). I certainly hope I don’t ever come back to Campus to realize I’m driving on “Sooner” lane or watch a basketball game in the “Longhorn” spirit arena!

I’d be fairly surprised if there aren’t several alumni out there that made the same article observation I did and are wondering the same thing!

Aggie Grove

We can see how the name could create anger, annoyance and disgust without proper explanation. Aggie Grove holds a special place in the hearts of thousands of our older alumni. For our younger alumni, this can serve as an explanation of how “Aggie Grove” earned its name.

We were football teammates and friends at Tech; we played on the offensive line together, most of the time right next to each other, and he was always a guy you could count on to get his job done well. I have great memories of times we shared together on and off the field. He’s a quality person with significant achievements, and I’m pleased to see him receive some well-deserved recognition.

Texas Tech University and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges EVERY 10 YEA RS , Texas Tech University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Every SACSCOC-accredited institution must submit a Compliance Certification Report prior to reaffirmation. Texas Tech successfully submitted its Fifth-Year Interim Report in April 2011.The University submitted its CCR on Sept.8, 2014.

The Compliance Certification Report outlines how the university has complied with each of the core requirements and comprehensive standards required by SACSCOC as well as federal regulations.

Reaffirmation teams at Tech examined the following: • Governance/Administration • Institutional Effectiveness • Undergraduate Education • Faculty Credentialing/Faculty Issues • Student Service, Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) • Graduate Education • Distance Education • Learning/Information Resources • Substantive Change An Off-Site Reaffirmation Committee then reviewed the CCR. This committee consisted of professional peers from universities of SACSCOC, and their job was to assess educational strengths and weaknesses of the university. Texas Tech received this feedback in mid-November 2014.

At this point, the university administration’s attempted to address any concerns or weaknesses noted in the committee’s report. This report, along with Tech’s proposed 10225-2020 Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) were submitted prior to the visit of the on-site reaffirmation committee. The on-site review was scheduled for Feb. 24-Feb. 26, 2015.

Following the on-site peer review, that committee’s report will outline any additional findings, and Tech will have an additional five months to prepare a further clarifying response, if necessary. After submission of that final response, all the materials will be studied by the SACSCOC Committees on Compliance and Reports, which will make a recommendation to the SACSCOC Executive Board. The board’s decision regarding the reaffirmation of TTU’s accreditation status will be announced during the December 2015 annual meeting in Houston.

It would be hard to measure the total number of hours spent compiling all these reports and documents by faculty, staff and administrators.

According to Provost Lawrence Schovanec, Ph.D., “More than two years in preparation, this comprehensive self-study affords our university a critically important opportunity to carefully review what we do and how we do it; our goals and values and how we plan and act to achieve them; how we measure our progress in attaining our goals; and above all, how we use what

we have learned to better serve the needs of our students and other constituencies.”

This process is critically important to Texas Tech. Many of you may recall when Tech was penalized in 2007 for failing to meet one of its academic standards. To lift the probation, administrators and faculty spent months compiling information for SACS officials on how students learned from Tech’s general education courses, such as math and science. They also cut hundreds of courses from the general education curriculum, which they said had grown too large.

The core curriculum is a body of general degree requirements that all students, regardless of major, must complete. This curriculum includes courses such as English, speech, history, political science, lab science, visual and performing arts and foreign language. Tech has a more rigorous core curriculum than the state requires.

The probation came after apparently several warnings from SACS. Tech administrators blamed the probation on an administrative oversight, saying they failed to turn in a report on time.

Former Chancellor Kent Hance called it “the lowest point” of his tenure at the time.

At the time I thought we handled the situation very poorly.

Top administrators apparently knew several days in advance that this news was going to be announced. Instead of taking the offensive, we waited until the news broke and then took the defensive. Believe me, we were on the defensive for some time.

Officials across the campus-fielded questions such as, “Does this mean my degree won’t be worth anything?”

It really didn’t have anything to do with the quality of our academic program or any of our degrees. It had to do with the failure to provide the paperwork that SACS apparently wanted.

That is why the accreditation is so critical because when something like this probation happens, the public perception can be distorted, which causes major public relations problems for Tech.

Again quoting Schovanec, “Many people deserve recognition for their role in the successful completion of this report, and it is impossible to name them all here. I would like to recognize the staff in the Office of Planning and Assessment, who have undertaken the management of this process, and whose members worked tirelessly to finalize the details of completion and production; the leaders of the 10 reaffirmation teams who led the various cohorts of faculty and staff contributing to the report; the Office of Institutional Research, which supported innumerable requests for various kinds of data and documentation; and the more than 80 individual authors, whose meticulous attention to detail and patient persistence through the cycle of revisions resulted in a solid product of which we can all be proud. The drafting process, which spanned more than a year, was also aided by the input of two expert consultants.”

He continued: “For now, the next big target is the completion of our QEP, Bear Our Banners Far and Wide: Communicating in a Global Society, which was finalized during the fall semester. This faculty-driven initiative will focus on improving student learning through increased and globally contextualized communication skills. You should anticipate hearing a lot more about the QEP during the next few months.�

I firmly believe that, under the leadership of Schovanec, Texas Tech will be reaccredited. However, as he has stated, the success of reaccreditation was definitely a team effort. Hundreds of staff, faculty and administrators contributed to answering the endless questions that have to be answered in such a report.

News TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY HAS CREATED THE PRESIDENT’S GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS, WHICH WILL SHOWCASE THE IMPORTANCE OF GRADUATE EDUCATION AND ATTRACT HIGH QUALITY APPLICANTS TO TEXAS TECH. The President’s Graduate Fellowships are funded in part by the Ed and Linda Whitacre Graduate Fellowship Endowment. The fellowships will provide a stipend of up to $32,000 per year, comparable to the prestigious National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship, and will be awarded on a competitive basis to applicants in any of the university’s doctoral programs. Awards will include tuition and a $2,000 per year research and travel allowance, renewable contingent upon progress, for up to five years.

THE RETAIL MANAGEMENT PROGRAM AT TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY’S COLLEGE OF HUMAN SCIENCES IS OFFERING A SPECIAL RETAIL TRENDS CLASS COURTESY OF A GRANT FROM COTTON INCORPORATED. Deborah Fowler, Ph.D., a professor in the college and the faculty project leader for the grant, teaches the retail trends class, which will be offered in Fall 2015 and will include a trip to New York City to visit Cotton Incorporated’s headquarters there. Students will also attend the International Textile and Apparel Association Conference in Santa Fe, N.M., also funded by the grant. This is the second year Texas Tech has received this grant.

The Rawls MBA was unranked in the organization’s last rankings in 2012. People PATRICIA R. DELUCIA, PH.D., HAS BEEN APPOINTED ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT FOR RESEARCH FOR FACULTY AFFAIRS. Vice President for Research Robert V. Duncan (not to be confused with Texas Tech University System Chancellor Robert L. Duncan) announced the appointment Nov. 14. DeLucia joined the Office of the Vice President for Research in April 2014 as a faculty fellow, responsible for faculty award nominations and recognition opportunities. In this new role, DeLucia will continue to focus on faculty awards and research development opportunities.

She also will continue her teaching and research activities in the Department of Psychological Sciences, where she is a professor, Coordinator of the Human Factors Psychology Program and an adjunct professor in the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center School of Nursing. She joined the faculty at Texas Tech in 1991.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY RECENTLY RECEIVED ITS EIGHTH NATIONAL MILITARY RECOGNITION THIS YEAR , being ranked one of the 2015 Best for Vets from Military Times. The university is ranked as one of the top 140 higher education institutions in the nation for veterans, coming in at No. 19, and is one of only three universities in Texas to be ranked in the top 20. The ranking was based off the evaluation of university culture, academic quality, student support, academic policies and financial aid, along with other categories.

The council is composed of the spouses of chief executive officers at member institutions. It facilitates communication among spouses, promotes public affairs programs and projects and provides a source of advice and counsel to spouses on issues of common concern, particularly through programs at the APLU annual meeting.

As chairwoman of this council, Nellis also is a member of the APLU Board of Directors.

TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS JOHN SCHROEDER, PH.D., BRIAN HIRTH, PH.D., AND JERRY GUYNES, PH.D., ARE THE INVENTORS ON TWO RECENTLY FILED U.S. PATENT APPLICATIONS for the optimization of wind plant performance through the use of radar technology and associated analysis techniques. Using the enhanced information about flow conditions enables proactive controls to be developed that can minimize turbine-to-turbine interaction and maximize power generation. Schroeder is director of the National Wind Institute and a professor of atmospheric science in the College of Arts and Sciences. Hirth and Guynes are both research professors for the National Wind Institute at Texas Tech University.

THE NCAA DIVISION I BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPOINTED BRIAN SHANNON, the Charles B. “Tex” Thornton Professor of Law at Texas Tech University School of Law, to serve on the new NCAA Division I Council. The Division I Council is a part of the recently completed overhaul of the NCAA’s governance structure. The Council will have primary responsibility for Division I legislation, developing and recommending policies to the Board of Directors and supervising and acting on a wide array of issues, including NCAA championships. Shannon has served as the NCAA faculty athletics representative (FAR) at Texas Tech since 2008 and is serving his second term as national president of 1A FAR. Shannon’s peers within 1A FAR recommended him for the appointment.

Dear Alumni of Texas Tech University, In my previous letter, I shared with you details of the university’s Quality Enhancement Plan as it pertains to our reaccreditation efforts. “Bear Our Banners Far and Wide: Communicating in a Global Society” reflects our commitment to providing a culturally diverse environment in which Texas Tech’s students can learn, prosper and be better prepared for a globally evolving workforce.

While this initiative is in its infancy, providing opportunities for international students is not new at Texas Tech. For years, students from foreign lands have stepped foot on campus in search of educational opportunities. We have a strong higher education system in the United States and Texas Tech is proud to be an institution recognized and sought out by students abroad.

In an effort to provide the very best opportunities for all students, the International Education and Enrollment Management (IEEM) division was created within the Office of International Affairs to bring together all international education activities at Texas Tech under one umbrella. Comprised of International Student Recruiting, International Undergraduate Admissions, International Student Retention, International Sponsored Students, Study Abroad and International Agreements, the IEEM team, along with the International Student and Scholar Services division, provides a one-stop shop for international undergraduate and graduate students seeking a degree at Texas Tech, and for all TTU students interested in studying abroad.

A record 2,805 international students were enrolled at Texas Tech in the fall, marking the sixth-straight year we’ve hosted more than 2,000 foreign students. Twelve years earlier, in Fall 2002, we eclipsed the 1,000-enrollment figure for the first time.

As you can see, the university has been committed to opening its doors and has steadily increased opportunities.

Last year, more than 1,000 of our current students also participated in 152 study abroad programs in 47 countries. That number was the highest in the program’s history and demonstrates an explorative nature in our students and thirst for experiencing other cultures. Study abroad programs, which are open to all of our students, offer innovative opportunities by expanding the classroom around the world.

With programs in more than 70 countries, opportunities exist for many student interests. Culinary classes in Italy, range and wildlife management in Australia and engineering in the Czech Republic are a few examples where students gain experience working alongside students of other nationalities. One of the more popular programs is at our campus in Spain–Texas Tech University in Sevilla. Students immerse themselves in the language and culture through classroom education and local excursions. Additionally, students are paired with host families to fully experience the Spanish culture.

Our impact globally through our international graduates is reflected through the 92-year history of our university.

• Demetrios Lakas, for example, was a 1953 graduate of Texas Tech and went on to serve nearly nine years as president of Panama. During his tenure, he negotiated the 1977 Torrijos-Carter Treaty, transferring control of the Panama Canal from the U.S. to Panama.

• Yan Chen is chief technologist of cloud computing with Hewlett-Packard in his native China.

• And, Viput Ongasakul, a business graduate from Thailand, is dean of the Nida Business School in Bangkok.

These three successful individuals represent a long history of international students, who chose Texas Tech University as an avenue to establish themselves professionally. We are proud of their achievements and representation of our university on the global plane.

BY JEAN ANN CANTORE Since 1897, serious runners have been competing in the annual Boston Marathon, sponsored by the Boston Athletic Association. The event is open only to people who meet specific requirements, including having completed qualifying races with certain running times.

The 2013 Boston Marathon was one that no one ever will forget because of the terrorism that took place at the finish line. Diane Caraway Sherer ran in that historic event, nearing the finish when bombs exploded. She recalls much of what she thought and felt because of those unexpected and tragic events.

Sports have always been part of Sherer’s life. Growing up in Lubbock, she enjoyed swimming, roller-skating and riding bikes. She added running, lifting weights and other endeavors to her athletic repertoire later.

Diane played volleyball, basketball and track on her junior high team and played volleyball in high school. She played softball in summer leagues and continued to play volleyball and softball even after starting her career.

Sherer is a determined person who has accomplished a great deal in her life.

A 1981 graduate of Monterey High School in Lubbock, she was valedictorian of a class of more than 550. She earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science at Texas Tech University in 1985 with highest honors. After graduation, she began work as a computer engineer in Garland, Texas, a job she stills holds.

She loves challenges, so it’s no surprise Sherer would enjoy marathons and the hard work that goes into preparing for, and running them.

“My first Boston Qualifier was in 2010 and was totally unexpected,” Sherer says. “My running buddy and co-worker, Christy, was training for her first Boston Marathon, having qualified the year before. She decided to run the Dallas White Rock Marathon as a training run, and I decided to run it, too.

“When I got to the halfway point, I realized I was on track for Boston and decided to try to keep up the pace. I finished in 1:58:56, just ahead of my qualifying time of 4:00.”

Buoyed by her success, she applied for the 2012 Boston Marathon but missed getting in by a mere four seconds.

Once her disappointment subsided, she entered the Dallas 2012 White Rock Marathon but soon after knew that, because of family obligations, she probably could not run it. Then, a series of unexpected events allowed her to run the race, although she was not completely prepared—mentally or physically.

She ran the White Rock Marathon 2012 and finished with a time of 3:57.

This time, Boston accepted her as a runner.

Sherer’s mom called her a week-and-a-half before the 2013 Boston Marathon to say she had to have surgery. (She had been fighting cancer for several years.) Suddenly, Sherer’s priorities changed. She drove to Lubbock and stayed with her mom in the hospital after surgery.

Because the marathon was so close, she tried but was unable to cancel her trip to Boston.

“Mom insisted that I go run the Boston Marathon because it had been a runner’s dream for me,” Sherer says. “She bragged to all her nurses that I was going to run the Boston Marathon.

So I stayed until the last minute with her, drove back to Dallas and got on a plane for Boston.”

Sherer and her husband, Rusty, also a computer engineer, traveled to Boston in April 2013. They attended the race expo, walked the Freedom Trail and attended the marathon dinner. From their room at the Westin, they had a view of the area near the finish line.

“I spotted a massive white tent from hotel our window and, realizing it was the medical tent, jokingly told Rusty to check there if he couldn’t find me at my expected finish time on marathon day,” Sherer says. “How glad I am that he did not have to look there.”

There couldn’t have been a prettier day than April 15, 2013 in Boston, although a tad warm for a marathon.

Before Diane got on the bus to ride to the race start, she and Rusty agreed on a meeting spot during the event— he would wait at mile 17 with her change of shoes.

All runners received a small yellow bag with their bib numbers for their belongings. They were to leave them on the buses until after the race. When her wave—or running group—was called, she stuffed her cell phone into her bag.

“It was a decision I would regret,” she says.

“I don’t remember much about the start except that I was excited and nervous,” Sherer says. “I know I turned on my iPod and started my watch, both important. On my iPod, I carried the favorite or most inspiring songs of my relatives and friends as well as my favorite Christian songs. When the song comes on during the marathon, I think of that person. It helps to take my mind off my own pain and think of those who mean the most to me. I also listen to songs that bring together body, mind and spirit.”

“The spectators on the sidelines were awesome—cheering and waving the entire time. I kept my music loud enough to listen but low enough to hear the crowd.”

When Diane reached mile 17, she saw Rusty on the sidelines. She stopped to change shoes, and Rusty reassured her he’d meet her at the finish line.

“Nearing the end of the race, one of my favorite songs came up on the iPod – ‘Glorious Day’ by Casting Crowns,” she says. “At that point, I felt happy. It was a glorious day. I was healthy, had a wonderful family and friends and was about to finish the Boston Marathon. I was one-half mile away from the finish line. My body was exhausted, and my mind was cloudy, but I was almost there. I was elated.

“Then the spectators became curiously quiet, and a confusing image confronted me. A young man was running right down the middle of the runners in street clothes yelling at us to stop running. Everyone in front of me was slowing down to a stop, and I could not imagine why we were stopping.

Everyone was calm but seemed to be in shock, as I was. Someone with a cell phone received a text that there had been an explosion.”

She was at mile 25.7, one-half mile from the finish line.

“We heard more rumors of bombs going off at the finish line. There were serious injuries. My mind began to imagine the worst. We then heard sirens, lots of sirens, and helicopters began to fly overhead. A police car came blasting through the crowd of corralled runners, and the Boston policeman screamed through the open window for us to clear a path. And then it hit my muddled mind. Rusty was waiting for me at the finish line.”

Young people in nearby apartments brought water and trash bags to help warm the runners who were stalled. There was an outpouring of concern from Bostonians.

Sherer and a fellow runner, a woman from Wisconsin whom she thinks was named Stacy, maneuvered the blocked streets, trying to reach their hotels near the finish line. They took turns crying and comforting each other as they ran.

All Diane could think about was whether or not Rusty was safe.

“When we neared the finish line, we became disoriented,” she says. “We turned one corner, and what we saw almost brought me to my knees—an entire block filled with waiting ambulances. At that point, I knew whatever awaited me at the finish line was bad, very bad. Helicopters flew overhead continuously, and people staggered down the streets like it was a war zone. A young businesswoman gave Stacy, who was shivering uncontrollably, her jacket. She let us use her cell phone, which was finally able to make calls. The first call I made was to the only number that was left in my brain at this point, my childhood home.

“Mom answered, not recognizing the caller ID of the Boston phone number, and seemed confused as to who was calling her. When she heard my voice, she began to cry, and I told her I was not hurt but needed to know if Rusty had been injured. She told me Rusty had been delayed getting to the finish-line because of the large crowds piling onto the subway. He heard the explosions and instead headed toward the bus containing my bag. He was safe. My Boston marathon was finally over.

“The next step was to find the bus that held my bag, and cell phone. Just as I spotted my bus, the Boston police began screaming at us to clear the area because there were additional bomb threats and the street where the buses were parked was not safe. I sprinted to my bus and pleaded with the volunteer on it to throw me my bag before she evacuated. She threw it out the open window, and we both ran to another side-street.”

Diane immediately powered on her cell phone and called Rusty. They met on a corner admidst chaos.

Never had she been so happy to see anyone.

Upon looking at her phone, Diane realized many people had been calling and texting her to see if she was OK. Rusty had been able to talk to Diane’s mother early on to let her know he was OK and was looking for Diane. Once the couple’s older son, Trevor, an ICU nurse in Lubbock, heard the news, he started calling Boston-area hospitals, looking for his mother. Their other son, Caleb, was in a college class when his girlfriend texted him about the marathon tragedy.

Although relieved not to be hurt physically, Diane was devastated and wondered why anyone would do such an awful thing or why at such a joyful event.

“I just sat on the curb and cried because although I did not know the full extent of injuries, I knew the lives of so many would be forever changed and possibly destroyed,” she says. “We sat in shock for a while not knowing where to go–the Westin was closed because, being so close to the finish line, had received bomb threats.

“We finally found a small restaurant that was open, surprisingly, and went in, because I had not eaten since 6 a.m. It was close to 6 p.m. We barely sat down when the waiter informed us that the FBI was closing the restaurant immediately because of more bomb threats. We had to leave.”

Unfamiliar with Boston, they had no idea where to go. Diane still had on her lightweight running clothes, and it was getting cold.

When the Sherers could finally return to their hotel, they watched the news for the first time. As they could see the medical tent from their window, Diane was grateful for the people there who helped others. She also was relieved they hadn’t needed to be there themselves.

“The sound of the bombs from the news went off in my head all night,” she says.

Although she easily could have chosen never to run a marathon again, Sherer’s reaction was the complete opposite. One week after returning from Boston, a friend told her the Oklahoma Memorial Marathon committee was offering free entry to all Boston Marathon 2013 runners who could not finish.

“It wasn’t the free entry that drew me in; it was the opportunity to run to support those who had suffered as those in Boston—the Oklahoma City bombing victims of 1995,” she says. “Christy agreed—we had to go. I ran the OKC Memorial Marathon approximately two weeks after the Boston bombing. When I saw the ‘one mile to go’ marker, I shuddered and cried and smiled as I passed it.”

Completing the Oklahoma Memorial Marathon was a victory for Sherer.

Soon afterward, the Boston Athletic Association invited the 2013 runners who had not completed the race but who had made it to at least mile 13.l, to the 2014 Boston Marathon Taking a deep breath, Sherer decided to run.

The day of the 2014 Boston Marathon was similar to the previous year except the city was swamped with more news crews and runners, extra police and military, helicopters and many more spectators.

“The weekend was amazing and wonderful and sad and emotional, all at the same time,” Sherer says. “This time, I had one ear filled with a headphone and the other clear to hear the crowd. The support was amazing, and I smiled during the entire race.

“At exactly the time my foot hit the half marathon mat, my iPod shuffle played ‘Glorious Day’—the exact same song playing when I was suddenly stopped on the course one year ago, a half mile from finishing. I felt this must be a message—it won’t happen again.

“As I neared the end, I knew that it wasn’t even near my fastest time but I didn’t care. When I rounded the corner and saw the finish line, so near yet so far, I cried and smiled at the same time. I instinctively moved to the center of the street when I came to the places where the bombs had exploded. I crossed the finish line tired but extremely happy. I received my medal from a nice volunteer—a man I did not know, much like those strangers in Boston who had helped me almost one year ago.”

“My marathon was finally complete. But all I could really think about in that moment was that a true marathon had only just begun for the people who were injured in the blast a year ago, and for the families of those killed. I hope that they will keep running the race, push past the pain, and get to the finish line.

THE CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF ADDICTION AND RECOVERY now supports 125 students in recovery on the Texas Tech Campus and has expanded outreach internationally making recovery service trips to Ghana, Africa, and Prague, Czech Republic.

The Texas Tech Board of Regents approved exciting new changes in the COMMUNITY, FAMILY AND ADDICTION SERVICES department. They approved a new Institute for the Study of Addiction, Recovery and Families, a new Center for Collegiate Recovery Communities and a new Center for Family Systems Research Intervention. The Regents also approved a name change for the Center of the Study of Addiction and Recovery. It will now be called the Center for Addiction Recovery Research.

The DEPARTMENT OF DESIGN was invited to join the prestigious Design Futures Council as an Institutional Affiliate.

The FAMILY CONSUMER SCIENCES EDUCATION program offers the only doctoral program in the nation to prepare individuals for Family and Consumer Sciences faculty positions in higher education.

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT AND FAMILY STUDIES faculty participate in outreach programs ranging from promoting literacy in Lubbock to fostering socio-emotional development and academic readiness in Malawi, Africa.

Family and Consumer Sciences Education students are prepared to educate others about relationships between individuals, families, communities and the environment in which they live.

★ Apparel Design and Manufacturing students Nicole Peacock and Emily Charlton donate their personal time to create custom outfits for conjoined twins. The project improved the students’ technical abilities and provided seven outfits for the twins including a christening gown.

★ The Center for the Study of Addiction and Recovery (CSAR) supports research, teaching, and service that encourage quality, long-term addiction recovery. The success of the collegiate recovery community has been replicated in more than 35 other higher education institutions across the country. The Office of National Drug Control Policy cites CSAR as the model collegiate recovery program in the nation.

★ The Community, Family and Addiction Services department plans to begin the first Addiction and Recovery Studies doctoral program in the nation in Fall 2016.

★ The Family and Consumer Sciences program offers a master’s program delivered fully online that is provided in collaboration with partner institutions through the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance.

Apparel Design and Manufacturing students learn to create and produce their own designs, research and apply the latest trends, manage product development, apparel design, or design and construct costumes for stage.

The Department of Human Development and Family Studies operates a Child Development Research Center which provides educational/developmental programs for approximately 80 families with children from birth through five years of age.

Interior Design students participate in a wide range of design experiences: lectures, studios, seminars, group presentations and discussions, professional critiques, field trips and field experiences.

Nutritional Sciences prepares individuals who will make a contribution to food and nutrition related professions, and to society as a whole through quality education, research and service.

The Restaurant, Hotel & Institutional Management program prepares students with extensive management skills and practical work experience. Labs in hotel operations, food production and computers give students hands-on training that increases their marketability in the industry.

Personal Financial Planning students study economic, financial and social influences to prepare them to assist families and individuals with their financial planning needs and have access to more than $5 Million in professional software in the Charles Schwab Personal Financial Planning Complex.

Editors Note: It was happenstance that I discovered alumna Jennifer Wikowsky Mangum. You may remember her name and face from the January/ February issue, because she was the winner of the autographed football helmet that was part of the sweepstakes related to our Texas Techsan magazine readership survey. I wanted to run a brief biography on her in the last issue, she obliged and sent me a blurb about herself. I was blown away.

This woman is a superstar. I often tell alumni that we love to hear about them and that, “If you don’t tell us, we don’t know.”

Such is the case with Mangum. For the past quarter century she has quietly devoted her life to coaching and teaching, simultaneously continuing an impressive diving career. I know you’ll be impressed with her story.

The Spark Her knobby knees were often skinned, earned while sliding into home or climbing trees. Shorts and cotton t-shirts were her non-game uniform—her clothing had to allow for movement because she was rarely still. Her team baseball cap was perched atop a mass of silky, tangled little girl hair, and she was never very far from her prize possession: a scuffed, wellworn and much-loved baseball glove.

Growing up in the Midwest in the 1960s and ’70s, baseball was king and she knew, loved and played the game. Her teams were the Chicago Cubs and the Boston Red Sox, she still remembers details about Boston Red Sox player Fred Lynn, the baseball phenom who’s best known for winning Rookie of the Year and MVP in the same year: 1975.

She was a tomboy, eschewing pigtails and nail polish in favor of baseballs and bubblegum. Petite yet sturdy, she competed on an all-boy baseball team until she hit sixth grade.

“My family moved to Iowa and I was informed by my new school that I’d have to play softball with the other girls, that I could no longer be part of a boys’ baseball team,” says Jennifer Wikowsky Mangum ’87.

Softball held no appeal for the daring girl. She opted instead to join the track team and swim team. Though she didn’t know it then, the forced switching of sports would change her life’s path by sparking a passion she’d carry for a lifetime.

She was a coach’s dream.

She was a coach’s dream. A kid who was athletic, had loads of natural talent, and who—bonus—was extremely driven and disciplined. Maybe it was the fact that she was the oldest of five kids—older children are often over-achievers, setting high standards for their siblings as well as themselves. Or maybe she was just born to fly.

She was a daredevil. Bold. When presented with a challenge, she charged ahead with a bright, broad smile and a heart full of confidence. Her first dive off of a platform was performed as a response to a challenge from a fellow swim team member. She was 14 years old, a freshman.

“My friend and I were watching a gymnast, a girl my age, dive,” she says. “My friend dared me to try the same dive. Well, I had never been a diver, but by the end of the day I was doing front double somersaults. My mom was there watching and ended up hiring someone to give me lessons, and it ended up being the guy who had won the NCAA Division III national championship that year for Lake Forest College (in Lake Forest, Ill.).”

Five lessons later, she tried out for the diving team at her high school in Downers Grove, Ill., where her family relocated to from Iowa. She was selected as a member of the varsity diving team, quite a coup for someone so young with so little experience. Successful divers have to be self-assured, sleek and infinitely fit, and Jenn was all of those.

“I was very fearless,” she notes. “Anything they asked me to do, I’d just throw it.”

She credits her diving coach for seeing the promise in her, for having faith. Her junior year, she placed 4th in the state. By early in her senior year, she was being courted by a number of NCAA Division I universities. She knew she wanted to head south for college and was entertaining offers from Auburn, Alabama, Kansas, University of Texas, Columbia University (obviously not southern) and Texas Tech.

She narrowed the list down to Texas Tech and the University of Texas. She wanted a school that had strong science and math programs because she planned to major in either math or physics. Jenn says, at the time, Auburn and Alabama didn’t fit that standard for her. The University of Texas couldn’t offer her scholarship money until her sophomore year, so she opted for Texas Tech, where she earned a bachelor of science in math with a minor in physics.

“I have no regrets about choosing Tech,” notes Jenn. “The other school that I was deciding between at the end of the recruiting process was Columbia University in New York City, and I cannot imagine how different my life would be if I had gone there instead.”

The transition was a bit of a shock: from the frigid Chicago suburbs to the arid plains of Texas. She had landed at a large university where she didn’t know a soul except Joe Elam, the coach who recruited her.

“Jenny, which is what we called her back then, was the first girl I recruited at Tech,” says Elam, who coached the swimming and diving teams at Texas Tech from 1981-1986. “She had won a lot of meets and was a top diver in Illinois.”

Elam, who hailed from Indiana, pursued many recruits from outside of Texas.

“She was a phenomenal diver, but at the collegiate level she was competing against some of the best div-

ers in the country,” Elam says. “It was eye-opening for her.”

Jenn will tell you that, although she was talented, she started diving late, by age 14 most of her competitors had years under their belts. The diving season ran from October through the end of March, and Jenn says she made it to the zone meets at the season’s end, but never qualified for the NCAA Championships.

“I think that was the impetus for me to compete now,” says Jenn of her decision to join and compete with the Masters Diving team post-college.

During her junior year at Tech, 1985, she received disappointing news: Tech was eliminating the swimming and diving programs. So, her senior year she missed out on competing altogether. But she discovered a new passion, and that was coaching.

“I knew I wanted to teach, ever since I was a little girl,” says Jenn, whose mother was a chemistry teacher.

Coach Elam had been coaching for Lubbock Independent School District, but was moving away.

He encouraged Jenn to apply for his job.

“She always had such great communication skills,” Elam says. “She’s very intelligent. I think, because she studied physics, she had a great understanding of how the mechanics of diving worked, and she does a great job of teaching that to kids.”

In 1987 she accepted a position with LISD as the diving coach. She also taught math at O.L. Slaton Junior High School. In 1993 she left Lubbock for Midland, where the city had recently completed construction of a fantastic pool, completed with 5 meter, 7 meter and 10 meter platforms and an Olympic diving well. She’s currently in her 22nd year of teaching and coaching in Midland, and her 28th year overall.

Jenn Mangum is the head coach for diving and swimming for Midland Independent School District and teaches Advanced Placement physics with calculus and introduction to physics at Midland Lee High School. Her days are as follows: • 5:30 a.m. - arrive at pool • 6:00-7:30 a.m. - varsity swim team practice • 8:00 a.m. - travel to Midland Lee, where she teaches two periods of introduction to physics and one period of AP physics with calculus • 2:00-6:00 p.m. - back to the pool for junior varsity swimming and diving practice

Her hectic schedule hasn’t varied much in her 28 years of coaching and teaching. Yet, when she was just a few years into her career, she decided to return to diving.

“I never felt I accomplished everything I wanted to while I was at Tech,” she explains. “Some of my students asked me why I didn’t still dive.”

So, in 1990, when she was 25, she joined the U.S. Masters Diving team and began competing again. She has always been very fit and maintained a strict diet and exercise regimen—she can still wear dresses that she’s kept from special events in high school and college—so returning to diving was easy, physically, and pure joy for Jenn. She learned to balance her teaching and coaching career with her competitive career and excelled at both.

“Coach Mangum is very passionate about coaching,” says Todd Howey, Athletic Director at Midland Independent School District. “She has done a phenomenal job in making our swim program relevant again and works very hard daily to improve. She’s very knowledgeable and always puts kids first, going above and beyond for them. That’s a strong reason why she’s not only one of the best coaches in the State of Texas, but in the country.”

Jenn is also a mother and wife. Her husband, Paul Mangum, who grew up in Abilene and is a three-time Red Raider, received his B.S. and M.S. in biology and his doctoral degree in agronomy. He’s on faculty at Midland College and teaches general biology and performs research. The couple met while living in the Stangel/Murdough complex.

“I met Jenn when she was dating my roommate,” recalls Paul mirthfully. “He was always a very laid-back guy, and Jenn is not, and one day he said, ‘Man, I just don’t understand her at all.’ I said, ‘OK, let me date her, then.’ It all worked out, and he ended up being the best man in our wedding.”

They have a son, Stephen, who’s pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering at Texas Tech. He very obviously inherited his parents’ intellect and determination. He’ll complete his bach-

elor’s in two-and-a-half years and plans to pursue his MBA, possibly through Texas Tech’s 1-year STEM MBA program.

“I love math and physics and I wanted a way to combine those, so I chose mechanical engineering,” says Stephen. “My mom was my physics teacher, I took AP physics from her. A lot of people thought she’d treat me differently, but she didn’t. I was treated just like any other student. I thought she was definitely one of my better teachers I had during high school.”

Stephen, who played tennis for Midland Lee, says he saw his mother’s determination and drive exhibited often, but experienced it first-hand the summer between his sophomore and freshman years.

“I was really wanting to improve my game and agility,” he says. “So, every weekday morning, all summer, at 7 a.m. my mom and I went to the tennis courts and she worked with me until I improved. I was also playing a lot of tournaments on the weekends. I realized that, if she’d worked like that for me, what she also must do for her students. Seeing that in action, for me, was awesome.”

WHILE AT TEXAS TECH: • She was a three-time Zone qualifier.

• She went to NCAA Zones on both 1 and 3 meter in 1984, 1985, and 1986.

• She competed in the first-ever conference platform event in 1986.

• She set records for 11 dives on 1 meter and 10 dives on platform. Since the program was cut in 1986, those still stand.

• She was the Most Outstanding female diver for the 1985-1986 season.

DIVING AWARDS AND ACCOLADES • 2014 Honor Diver Award winner, international Swimming Hall of Fame in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (nominated the last three years, was a unanimous choice in 2014, unheard of for someone under 50 to be selected—received award Sept. 19, 2014).

• Earned 125 national titles while a Masters diver.

• She set World Records in three different age divisions.

• Earned 11 world championships in various age groups.

• Has competed in the 1-meter springboard, 3-meter springboard and the platform event during her career, and held world records in all three events at one time in different age divisions.

• Served as the chairman for Masters Diving for the United States Diving Organization.

• Currently serves as Diving Chairman for the Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association.

• Served on the High School All-American selection committee in 2014 to pick top 100 divers in the nation.

Jenn says Lubbock was a welcome change for her: “I loved the friendly people, and southern hospitality at Tech. Guys always opened doors for you, everyone was very welcoming. I also loved the weather. Being from the Chicago area, the winters in Lubbock were a lot nicer than the winters back home. Often in February and March we were able to sunbathe at Stangel Beach.”

As for ever returning to Chicago, Jenn says it won’t happen—Texas is definitely her home. She and her husband, Paul, jokingly refer to her as a “Damn Yankee.” Paul asks, “You know what a Yankee is? Someone from up north. Well, a Damn Yankee is someone who won’t go back.”

“Our coach could beat your coach.”

Jenn gets a kick out of hearing her students say things like, “Our coach could beat your coach.”

She has won an unbelievable number of competitions (See table on p. 33), championships and awards. She is one of the all-time greats, and in her post-college career has even defeated former Olympic athletes. Diving is an absolute passion for her and has guided her life since the age of 14.

“I love the feeling of flying through the air,” Jenn says. “I love the sport and I can’t imagine not doing it. I love the challenge. It’s hard to describe, but the feeling you get from it, it’s a rush. It really is an unbelievable and beautiful sport to watch and be a part of.

As a part of the Masters Team, Jenn competes nationally and internationally.

“Some of the best trips we’ve taken are to diving competitions,” says Paul of their travels in the United States as well as to locales such as Montreal, Canada, and Riccione, Italy.

For Jenn, being part of the Masters Team offered her the chance to reach her full potential in diving. On Sept. 19, 2014, she was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., which is unheard of for someone who’s under age 50.

At the induction ceremony, she reflected on her years in the masters program.

“I won my first World Masters Championship in 1992, which was a lifetime goal for me, to be a world champion in something,” she said. “In 2001, I scored my first set of straight 10s on a reverse dive from 10 meters. I was honored to have won many national and world events and to represent this sport as a competitor, a judge and a coach.”

In 2012, Jenn dislocated her shoulder while competing at an international diving competition in Italy.

“For the first time in my life, I had to struggle to understand something many of my own athletes have struggled with, and that was fear,” she said “I’ve never dealt with fear before. I was always pretty fearless, and to have that fear of reinjuring or having that happen again was something I had to learn to deal with.”

She spent two years working to relearn dives and was able to compete in Montreal in 2014.

Although Jenn will soon be able to retire from teaching and coaching, she doesn’t plan to give up diving. She plans to certify as a personal trainer and continue to coach diving.

As for whether she will continue to dive competitively, Jenn pointed out that the Masters Diving program has divisions beyond 90 years of age. She plans to make a splash for decades to come.

NEW on campus Regardless of how often you visit campus, whether it’s every year or once a decade, there’s always new construction to see. Some projects are small and cost $20,000, others are multi-million dollar projects. The team that undertakes all of the projects above $2 million is the office of FP&C. From concept to completion, the professionals in that office are the go-to folks for synthesizing institutional needs with quality design and construction. Recently they completed the Lubbock Campus Master Plan Update, more like a thick book, that is the physical result of TTU and TTUHSC’s strategic growth vision and plans. The Campus Master Plan was approved by the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents and represents over $1 billion in capital improvement projects. It is very exciting!

I wanted to feature some of their completed and upcoming projects in a few of the 2015 issues of the Texas Techsan. Last issue you were wowed by West Village, Tech’s newest residence hall. I’ve included here the relocated Southwest Conference Circle, which was previously located near the Exercise Sciences Building. When the new Petroleum Engineering Research building was reconstructed, the SWC Circle had to be relocated. It was refurbished and is as beautiful today as it was decades ago.

Construction on the Bayer Plant Science Building is well under way.

The architect’s rendering, above, shows what the structure will look like upon completion. Ground was broken on April 29, 2014, and completion is expected in June 2015. The structure is a 21,122-square foot addition to the original Department of Plant & Soil Science building at 15th Street near the English/Philosophy/Education Complex. This project is funded by donations from Bayer CropScience as well as Dale and Cheryl Swinburn of Tulia, Texas. Dale received his bachelor’s in agronomy in 1965 and is the founder of Windstar Inc., a cotton ginning and investment company.

When the Petroleum Engineering Research Building was being built, it was evident the historical Southwest Conference Circle—built in 1956, the year Texas Tech entered the Southwest Conference—would have to be moved. The Southwest Conference was established in 1914 and was dissolved in 1996, the same year Tech joined the Big 12 Conference. The Southwest Conference Circle was the site of pep rallies and spirit events for decades, and was a special place to many alumni who attended Tech during its years as a member of the Southwest Conference. Michael Molina, vice chancellor of Facilities, Planning & Construction, noted that the terrazzo tile used to construct the circle was brittle and prone to breakage. The SWC Circle was meticulously replicated in every detail and now lies approximately 60 feet directly east from its original location creating a new and useable park space near the Petroleum Engineering Research Building. Including Texas Tech, the circle has an area for all eight SWC universities: Arkansas, Baylor University, Rice University, Southern Methodist University (SMU), Texas Christian University (TCU), Texas A&M University and University of Texas. The photo at the top of the page shows the circle while under construction, and below that, the completed portion. The bottom photo is the new and improved Southwest Conference Circle.

The entrance to the Rawls Course, Texas Tech’s golf course, received a striking addition: a mural that is part of the Texas Tech University System’s Public Art Program, where 1 percent of the cost of each new building goes toward art to be displayed at the new structure.

Bridging Localities, 2014 Counterpoint Studio - Peter Tonningsen and Lisa Levine (Oakland, Calif.)

Material: Photographs Infused in Ceramic Tile Location: The Rawls Course Amount: $32,000 Peter Tonningsen and Lisa Levine use multiple-imagery to visually describe and characterize landscape, community, and public space. To create this mural, each artist began with a single roll of film and toured The Rawls Course and Texas Tech campus, photographing scenes and landmarks. That film was then rewound, exchanged, and the artists duplicated that process over the top of what the other artist had photographed, creating a surprising and complexly layered document of the two places. Bridging Localities helps to establish a connection between Texas Tech University and The Rawls Course, as well as provide a unique perspective of each location.

The entrance to Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park at Texas Tech received a minor facelift. This area outside Tech’s baseball field previously displayed a Double T in Italian tile, which was cracked and falling apart. The tile was pulled and replaced with heartier brick, and is ready for the 2015 baseball season. The white film on the Double T, at left, is residue from snowfall.

Anthony Lyons Represents Big 12 At NCAA Convention

Lyons is one of three student athletes selected by the Big 12 to represent the league in Washington

THE BI G 12 Conference has announced that Anthony Lyons will be one of three student athletes to represent the league at the NCAA Convention in Washington, D.C. Lyons, a sophomore baseball student athlete from Arlington, will play a key role in this historic NCAA Convention as the High Visibility Conferences (Big 12, ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12, SEC) vote on measures aimed at improving student athlete well being.

“Anthony is a wonderful choice to represent not only the Big 12 Conference, but also Texas Tech University at the NCAA Convention,” Texas Tech President M. Duane Nellis, Ph.D., said. “He is an outstanding student and an even better person. Anthony’s daily example is reflective of the student athletes we have at Texas Tech.”

Lyons played in 33 games last season as a freshman on the baseball team and helped lead the squad to the school’s first NCAA College World Series.

Aside from baseball, Lyons is an executive cabinet member of the Texas Tech Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. “This is a historic time in the history of collegiate athletics and I think Anthony will do a phenomenal job representing our student athletes and those of other Big 12 institutions.”

The current NCAA Division I governance structure, adopted in August 2014, provides autonomy to the High Visibility Conferences to adopt rules in a set of specific areas and ensures that student athletes have the ability to vote in the decision-making process. Autonomous legislation is designed to allow permissive use of resources or to otherwise enhance the well-being of student athletes by any member, to advance the educational or athletics-related needs of student athletes.

Under the autonomy process, each institution in those five conferences will have one vote, and there will be three student athlete representatives

per conference who also will each have one vote (15 student athlete votes total).

The student athlete representatives will work alongside university chancellors and presidents, athletics directors, senior woman administrators, faculty athletics representatives and athletics administrators during the autonomy discussion and business sessions. Joining Lyons as Big 12 student-athlete representatives at the convention will be Ty Darlington (Football, University of Oklahoma) and Maddie Stein (Softball, University of Kansas).

The NCAA Convention was held Jan. 14-18 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

What is your position on the Alumni Association Board? Member. I serve on the Legislative and Finance Committees.

What was your major and class year at Tech, plus any other degrees you may have earned? I was a graduate student in the Schools of Law and Business while at Texas Tech University, graduating with my JD/MBA in 1996. I received my BA from Harvard University in 1993 and an LLM from the University of Wales at Aberystwyth (United Kingdom) in 2000.

Where are you employed and what is your position? Currently, I am Dean of Workforce Development and Continuing Education at St. Philip’s College in San Antonio, Texas. I also continue to control artah Holdings, Inc., my holding company, and Dos Veces Hall Ranch, Inc., which manages ranch land once owned by my great grandfather and grandfather.

What are the names of your family members? My wife is Stephanie McClain Hall, an attorney at Valero Energy Corporation and a 1997 graduate of Texas Tech University School of Law. My daughter is Londyn Elyse Hall, a nine-year-old fourth grader at the Keystone School in San Antonio, Texas, and an avid gymnast, placing 5th All Around in State this past Fall 2015 in Level 4.

Major activities in which you were involved as a student at Tech: While at Texas Tech Law School, I was a National/ATLA Mock Trial Team Member and a Texas Tech National Black Law Students Association Frederick Douglas Moot Court Team Member (Regional Champions, 5th in Nation). I worked at O’Shea & Forcum Law Firm during law school and for Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas Phillips one summer.

What is one of your fondest memories from your Tech days? I enjoyed going to law school “back home.” Dean Frank Newton called me personally to invite me to attend Texas Tech School of Law. His son, Justin, and I played soccer together while at Lubbock High School. Professor John Krahmer’s daughter, Melissa, and I were junior high and high school classmates. My brother and I used to take care of Professor Rod Schoen’s cat when we were kids! He lived two houses down from us!

But, probably one of the most memorable (although probably not “fond”) memories was when the O.J. Simpson verdict was announced on October 3, 1995, during the fall of my third and final year in law school. I remember that lots of students were gathered in the Law School’s student center area, filling the room.

approximately 3-4 students in each class of 200 students, so the numbers were very small. When the verdict was announced, it was so tense that one could “cut the tension” in the room. And, while I and several of the other African American students in the room wanted to shout for joy, we kept quiet and slowly slid out one of the side doors. It was such a moment of emotion imbued with conflicting perspective…. It did not help that when several of the African American students and I went out to lunch afterward and we all ordered lunch, I ordered for my drink, seriously and without even thinking about it, “orange juice!” The waitress gave me a stern look! (I decided not to drink the orange juice!)

What is one thing you’ve enjoyed seeing occur recently at Texas Tech? The growth and the construction on and around campus are wonderful! Texas Tech’s campus engenders such a feeling of prestige, tradition and pride. The Law School has also added the Mark and Becky Lanier Professional Development Center. I also love the addition of the Hance Chapel—it is a beautiful building and honors a wonderful person and advocate for Texas Tech University and Texas in Honorable Kent Hance.

What is your favorite book? Besides the Bible, my favorite book is “Things Fall Apart” (1959), by Chinua Achebe. It is, in part, about religious identification and tension in a small village in Nigeria. A friend at Harvard University introduced this book to me when I was a student there, and it has had a powerful impact on me ever since.

What is your favorite movie? (Or, what is the last movie you saw?)

My favorite movie continues to be “Do the Right Thing” (1989), by Spike Lee. This movie deals with racial tensions in the BedfordStuyvesant section of Brooklyn during a very hot summer. The movie was released when I was transitioning from high school in Lubbock, Texas, to college in Cambridge, Mass., and has had a major impact on my growth, development, and world perspective.

What are your interests and hobbies? I enjoy general aviation flying, equestrian eventing, golfing, outdoor sporting, piano, poetry, traveling, languages and collecting stamps/coins.

What character trait do you value highly in an individual? I enjoy people who are balanced and grounded, whose lives are built on things other than money, jobs, positions, etc., but rather on values, family, faith and love for all people, particularly those whose daily life is a struggle.

If you could ask five or six people to your home for an evening, who would they be? Hah! I love this question. Other than my wife, daughter, and family, I think I would invite Ruby Bridges (for her stories of history and change), Warren Buffet (for his business advice), Mahatma Gandhi (for his peace and perspective), my law school mock trial and moot court partner Kelly Vick (for her often opposite, balancing views and still today one of my biggest fans), my grandfather Robert Monday Hall (for his inspiration and wisdom), and Jesus (for revelation and saving grace).

Timothy Parker, M.S., PE

In what city do you reside? Albuquerque, N.M. (80 percent), Roswell, N.M. (20 percent) What is your position on the Alumni Association Board? I have served as Marketing Committee vice chair for four years and have served on Facilities, Multimedia/Communications and Chapter Development Committees.

What was your major and class year at Tech, plus any other degrees you may have earned? I received a B.S. in civil engineering in December 1994, worked in Dallas for a consultant for six months and then went back to Tech to work on my master’s degree in civil engineering (environmental), graduating in December 1996. During graduate school, I taught in the Department of Civil Engineering and performed research at the Pantex Nuclear Weapons Plant outside of Amarillo.

Where are you employed and what is your position? I was appointed in April 2013 as the District Engineer for the Albuquerque Metro Area New Mexico Department of Transportation, serving nearly one-half of the state’s population and 54 percent of the elected officials. I also own a land development and energy services company that I started in 2004.

What are the names of your family members? My mother is Carol (Roswell, N.M.), my sister, Sissy (San Antonio, B.S. Dietetics 1995 from Texas Tech) and brother Bobby (Las Vegas, Nev., Texas Tech 1993-95). The two best blessings I have are my 8-year-old son, Joshua, and 6-year-old daughter, Grace Ann (near Artesia, N.M.).

Major activities in which you were involved as a student at Tech: The ones I can mention are ASCE/NIOSH national paper contest winner, New Mexico Section ASCE speech contest winner, Student Chair of Texas Section ASCE Fall Meeting, Steel Bridge chair, Bledsoe Hall president and member, member of the Texas Tech Tae Kwon Do Team, president TTU TKD Association and member of one fraternal group involving a secret handshake.

What is one of your fondest memories from your Tech days? Making some lifelong friendships.

What is one thing you’ve enjoyed seeing occur recently at Texas Tech? Kingsbury era aside (although it is a big deal), watching the departments rally around the Tier 1 vision, watching campus architecture expand and grow and watching Tech get better and better through the efforts of staff, students and alumni.

What is your favorite book? The Bible is the most read, but I started reading Ziglar material in middle school.

What is your favorite movie? “Ferris Buehler’s Day Off.” What are your interests and hobbies? Gym, snow skiing, scuba diving, inventing/creating, designing/building houses, investing in the lives of others through service and one-on-one mentorship.

What character trait do you value highly in an individual? Loyalty.

BOOKS JOHN L. CASTLEMAN (BS Education 1961) Lubbock,

has published an autobiography “Stay on Your Feet: A Life Journey from 1935 to Present,” which describes his growing up in West Texas and his service in the United States Army during the Korean War. He also discusses furthering his education by earning both a master’s degree and doctorate in education from the University of North Texas. He returned to Lubbock and taught at the then-called Lubbock Christian College, eventually becoming registrar and director of testing. He retired from Lubbock Christian College after 30 years of service.

RICHARD JESPERS (MA English 1986) Lubbock,

released his collection of stories “My Long-Playing Records and Other Stories” on Nov. 5. Many of Jespers’ nationally recognized narratives are set in West Texas, such as “Basketball is Not a Drug.” His partner is Kenneth.

1964 DAN TAYLOR (BS Agricultural Education, ’68 MED Agricultural Education) Ropesville, Texas, and his wife, LINDA TAYLOR (’65 BBA Business Education, ’69 MS Business Education), both received the Texas Agricultural Lifetime Leadership Alumni Association South Plains Agricultural Leadership Award for their passion for agricultural education. Dan is a former agricultural science teacher and former owner of Buster’s Gin in Ropesville, Texas. He has served on the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources’ Advisory Board at Texas Tech. Taylor farms in Lubbock and Terry counties. Dan was featured in the September/October 2012 issue of the Texas Techsan magazine. Linda is the owner and operator of SP Taylor

Insurance Agency, a Ropesville-based crop insurance agency. She is also a member of the Plains Cotton Growers Finance Committee, the Bayer Museum of Agriculture and the Texas Farm Bureau.

2000 DREW DEBERRY (BS Agricultural and Applied Economics) Austin, Texas, has been selected by Texas Governor Greg Abbott to join his incoming administration as policy director. Drew’s career began as an intern for then State Senator Robert Duncan’s office, during the 76th Legislative Session. Following graduation, he was the national agriculture coalition director of the 2000 campaign for President George W. Bush. Drew then worked in Washington, D.C., as the White House Liaison at USDA, and in 2005, he was promoted to Deputy Chief of Staff for the Texas Department of Agriculture, were he remained until his selected as policy director for Gov. ENTREPRENEURSHIP THE RESEARCH PARK AT TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY Texas Tech is creating a major center for innovation and entrepreneurialism with the first phase of the Texas Tech Research Park. Set to open in the summer of 2015, the 40,000 square foot facility is designed to become a resource for the faculty and students of both Texas Tech University and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center as well as community members interested in launching new ventures. The collaborative space for researchers, academic programs that promote entrepreneurship and innovation, public or private partnerships and new start-up businesses, is a critical step in building the knowledge-based economy of West Texas.

THE TEX A S TEC H chapter of Collegiate 100, a national community service organization, along with the East Lubbock Community Alliance, served a free Thanksgiving dinner to those attending the Difference Makers Fellowship Church on Buddy Holly Avenue in Lubbock Nov. 22. In addition, guests received full boxes of food to take home.

Members of the organization, which started the Texas Tech chapter in 2010, often mentor students and children in East Lubbock. A purpose of the organization is “to empower and inspire the youth of the next generation, through Mentorship, Leadership, Professionalism and Community Service.”

They were presented with the award in November at a luncheon in their honor at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas.

WESLEY KUMFER , a doctoral student in traffic engineering at Texas Tech University, was honored in Washington, D.C., in January as the South Plains Transportation Center’s student of the year. Kumfer presented two papers at the conference, including his research on how demographic factors play into fatal crashes in the United States.

The SPTC is a university transportation center for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Region 6, which consists of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. It is one of 10 regional centers in the country, with each sending one student to the Council of University Transportation Centers awards banquet held in conjunction with the Transportation Research Board’s annual conference.

MICHAEL WURMSTEIN , A N undergraduate student in the Department of Chemical Engineering, won first place in the Computing and Process Control Division at the 2014 Undergraduate Student Poster Competition at the AIChE Annual Student Conference in November in Atlanta, Ga. The poster was titled “Simulated Annealing Polymerization: A General Algorithm for Preparing Atomistic Model Structures of Amorphous Polymers.”
