Letters Dear Bill, As someone who also has a very deep love and admiration for our campus, I wanted you to be aware of something that is very special to me.

My dad, Raleigh C. Middleton, Class of 1929, was farm superintendent in the early 1930s, and our family actually lived on the campus. He planted the row of magnificent elm trees just north of the new West Village dorm complex at 18th and Texas Tech Parkway.

Through the gracious help of Michael Molina, Molina is having a plaque installed pointing out the history of these trees. As I recall, this lane between the trees led down to the then sheep farm.

I swell with pride when I see this specific area and the overall beauty and wonder of our campus.

Greek Life

at Tech was the source of major controversy and concern this past fall and, as a result, President Nellis has appointed a task force to look into current university policies related to Greek life with the responsibility of making recommendations for changes in the future.

I am obviously embarrassed by the insensitive posters and symbols my fraternity displayed at a party early last fall. There is absolutely no justification for this type of behavior, and the International Fraternity of Phi Delta Theta has punished the chapter accordingly.

We did not build our organization on actions such as these, and I am certain the same thing could be said for other fraternities on our campus that have come under the microscope for their actions in recent years.

I am very supportive of a strong Greek system. My own Greek experience is one of the most important things in my life. I didn’t say the most important, because there are obviously other things in life more important. But being a fraternity member was an invaluable experience for me.

Pledgeship helped me grow up. It forced me to learn to work together with others to achieve common goals. It taught me some humility, and I made many lifelong friends.

Pledges develop close relationships with the people they pledge with, and when they are initiated, those relationships expand to include the active members.

As a member, I learned that you have to first learn to be a good follower. It gave me some great training in leadership. I served as secretary, rush chairman, vice president, president and pledge trainer in my chapter, and the experience taught me a great deal about leading and building relationships.

I hear from very successful men and women frequently who tell me the leadership training they received as a result of their Greek experience had a lot to do with their success in life.

As an alumnus, I served 38 years as a chapter adviser, 19 years as editor of my fraternity’s international magazine and three years as a province president, so I think I have a decent understanding of the Greek world.

I am aware that the Greek system comes in for considerable criticism, but I have always felt that the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Collectively, the endless hours of community service rendered by Greek organizations adds so much value to our campus and our community.

It is also evident that Greek members are involved throughout this campus in leadership roles, and it is certainly evident in the Student Government Association.

The relationships that men and women make in their Greek organizations, in many cases, last a lifetime. These are no superficial relationships. They are real.

I haven’t seen a recent study, but I do know that a study done about six years ago indicated that Greeks graduate to the tune of 85 percent, much higher than the general graduation rate of about 60 percent for the entire student body. The Greek men’s and women’s overall GPA is consistently ahead of the overall men’s and women’s GPA. Greek organizations give freshmen and sophomores a place to cling to and be part of while they negotiate the often-treacherous terrain known as general degree requirements. I have seen many young men who probably never would have graduated if it were not for their fraternity experience.

I can tell you that Greek alumni are very much involved and very generous to their alma mater. Let me quickly add that I think any student who gets involved in an organization, whether it is Greek or not, tends to be very supportive of Texas Tech once they graduate.

I am often asked what major changes I have seen over the years in the Greek system. Obviously, there have been a number of changes, some good, and some bad.

The positive changes have been a de-emphasis of destructive hazing practices and a new emphasis on what the fraternity can do to assist its members with their academic programs, i.e., study halls, tutors, recognition and awards for good scholarships and higher requirements for pledges to be initiated.

The No. 1 change that has not been positive in my opinion is the alcohol culture that contributes to many of our problems. There was a day and time when students did not come to campus with drinking patterns already established. Those days are gone.

Today, the majority of students that come to campus, whether they pledge fraternities or not, have established drinking behavior. They have been drinking on a regular basis in high school and think it is unreasonable for anyone to suggest that they curtail their drinking habits.

You ask a newly formed group of pledges how many drink and most hands go up. You ask them if they know that most of them are violating the law (if under the age of 21) and they all know it. You ask them if they are aware of the legal consequences of being arrested for using a fake ID, driving while intoxicated, or just being arrested for public intoxication, and all the hands again go up.

You ask them if they are aware of the non-legal consequences of driving while drinking, i.e. accidents where accidents occur and individuals are injured and they all are aware of this. You ask them if they had a family member, close friend or someone in their high school who died as a result of driving while drinking, and they all do.

The problem is that, for some reason, although they are aware of all of this, they don’t think it applies to them individually. None of them ever thinks these bad circumstances and outcomes apply to them.

While I am using these examples in the context of Greek organizations, they really apply to most students, whether they are Greek or not. I have taught the Freshman Seminar Course (IS 1100) for years, and I get the same reaction from those freshmen as well.

I have struggled with this problem for years. You can hold seminars, workshops, distribute educational materials, use every resource available and unfortunately, it does not alter all of this behavior. But I think some progress is being made, so you have to keep trying.

Those of us who have been involved with the Greek system as alumni advisers or chapter advisers have to keep trying because we believe in the core values of our organizations and have seen enough positive outcomes over the years to justify our involvement.

One of the slogans Texas Tech has used in recent years is “Do the Right Thing.”

My fraternity obviously did not do that, and they are paying a price.

It takes a long time to build a good reputation. It can be damaged or destroyed in a few minutes of bad judgment.

NEWS TEX A S TEC H U N I V E R SI T Y launched a secure shredding service Sept. 9 in an effort to boost recycling efforts on campus while keeping sensitive information secure.

ShredTech, housed under the university’s Operations Division, securely shreds and disposes of sensitive information for all departments, faculty, staff and students. The service includes a StredTech truck that will pick up documents and properly dispose of them while following guidelines from the National Association of Information Destruction to ensure privacy.

The College of Media & Communication Outstanding Alumni Awards began in 1981 to recognize Texas Tech alumni who have made significant contributions to the field of mass communications. dean for research and faculty development at Texas Tech University’s School of Law and the director of the Center of Biodefense, Law and Public Policy, was named to the Texas Task Force on Infectious Disease Preparedness and Response. The task force was created by Gov. Rick Perry in response to the outbreak of the Ebola virus in Dallas.

She is a Paul Whitfield Horn Professor, the Robert H. Bean Professor of Law from 19992010, the director of the Center for Biodefense, Law and Public Policy, the director of the Law and Science Certificate Program and the JD/MS Program in the Life Sciences and Texas Institute of Environmental and Human Health.

Texas Tech University officials reported record enrollment numbers for the sixth-straight year. For the Fall 2014 semester, 35,134 students were enrolled. The difference of 2,023 students from the Fall 2013 semester is the third-largest increase in a single year since the university’s inception in 1925.

FOR THE TH I RD time in school history and the first time in six years, the Texas Supreme Court visited the Texas Tech University School of Law to hear a pair of cases on its docket. Oral arguments were heard on Oct. 9 at the Hunt Courtroom in the Lainier wing of the School of Law. The Supreme Court also heard cases at Texas Tech in 2008 and 1999 after a constitutional amendment, supported by state senator and current Texas Tech University System Chancellor Robert Duncan, was passed in 1997 which allowed the court to circulate to various law schools throughout the state.

T E X AS TEC H U N I V ERS I TY has been recognized as a 2015 Military Friendly School for the sixth straight year by Victory Media Inc., a veteran-owned business, dedicated to surveying thousands of institutions across the nation for best practices with military personnel. The rankings were based on categories such as military support on campus, academic credibility, percent of military students and academic credit for military service. More than 10,000 schools are surveyed and the top 20 percent are designated as Military Friendly schools.

ON S E PT. 1, the Department of Nutrition, Hospitality and Retailing (NHR) at the Texas Tech University College of Human Sciences was restructured to form two new departments. The new departments are The Department of Hospitality and Retail Management and The Department of Nutritional Sciences.

EDWARD E. WHI TAC RE College of Engineering students at Texas Tech University now have access to a powerful software tool for geological, engineering and petrophysical analysis, through IHS Petra software valued at more than $1.25 million from IHS Inc., the leading source of critical information and insight. IHS Petra is a PC-based geological and engineering analysis software tool that is used by geoscientists and engineers to visualize, analyze and manage well production, well log, drilling, reservoir and other related information. The IHS Petra license will allow up to 150

The award is a national recognition where universities are judged based on turf, landscape, challenges, budget, safety and sustainable practices. oldest buildings on the Texas Tech University campus was reopened on Oct. 16 after extensive renovations.

The Cottage was a building that was opened as a practice house in 1927. Seven female home economics students lived in the house and learned home management, cooking, laundry, ironing, social etiquette and how to manage domestic help.

Renovations began in 2011 and The Cottage reopened last year.

The first floor is a conference room and meeting area available for public use, while the second floor is home to the Center for Adolescent Resiliency. The center houses the Covenant Body Mind Initiative, the United Future Leaders program and Transforming through Transition. The cottage is off 15th Street and University Avenue.

University astrophysicist was part of a team of researchers who recently discovered a new reason for mysterious ultra-luminous X-ray sources to exist in the universe. Tom Maccarone, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Physics in the College of Arts & Sciences at Texas Tech and co-author of the paper stating that pulsars are dense stellar remnants left over from a supernova explosion. The one discovered burned with the light intensity of about 10 million suns. The discovery was made with NASA’s Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, or NuSTAR. The discovery of the brightest pulsar ever recorded was made by accident during an observation aimed at looking at a recent supernova explosion in the nearby galaxy M82. The research was published in the Oct. 9 edition of the peer-reviewed journal Nature.

This accreditation makes Texas Tech the only school in the state in which all four art programs—music, art, dance and theatre—are accredited.

T H E P OW / M I A F L AG flew at Memorial Circle on Nov. 11, 2014, Veterans Day. Thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends of Texas Tech, the POW/MIA flag flies over Memorial Circle on designated days. Alumnus Bobby Waddle ’55, who is a military veteran and member of the Texas Tech Alumni Association National Board of Directors, felt that flying the POW/MIA flag at Texas Tech’s Memorial Circle was a necessity. Waddle helped create an endowment to ensure upkeep of the program. As per official POW/MIA flag guidelines, the flag is flown six days a year: Armed Forces Day; Memorial Day; Flag Day, June 14; Independence Day, July 4; National POW/MIA Recognition Day and Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

For Texas Tech University, the New Year not only rings in a new semester but also our 10-year reaffirmation review by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). We are looking forward to our ten-year reaffirmation on-site review by SACSCOC in late February. Texas Tech has made significant progress on a variety of fronts and we hope that SACSCOC will confirm this progress as part of this important re-accreditation. As alumni, your success and support of this great university is an important dimension of our new levels of attainment.

A primary tenet of the SACSCOC accreditation process is the development of a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). The QEP was created to engage the broader academic community and address issues that contribute to institutional improvement.

Texas Tech’s QEP was guided by specific references within the university’s mission statement, which is “dedicated to student success by preparing learners to be ethical leaders for a diverse and globally competitive workforce.” Therefore, we selected the theme, “Bear Our Banners Far & Wide: Communicating in a Global Society.”

Why am I sharing this with you? Not only do we want to be transparent in our daily business and inform our stakeholders, but you also played a role in the formation of our QEP goals and may have an opportunity to contribute to the accreditation process in February.

Two primary goals of our QEP are to increase the communication skills and global awareness of our students. How did we arrive at these goals? In spring 2014, the QEP Development Committee administered a survey to Texas Tech alumni asking for remarks on the qualities university graduates need to succeed both professionally and personally. Our alumni responded that academic and co-curricular activities, which increase students’ communication skills and global awareness, were qualities they considered as very important to personal and professional success.

Our students must be able to communicate effectively because when they graduate they join an increasingly complex web of global interactions. Furthermore, to be effective leaders and workers—whether in government, health care, industry, information services, education or other career fields—our graduates need to be globally aware. By global, we speak metaphorically in that no matter the geographical locale of any human, they are always interconnected.

“Global” for the purposes of our QEP refers to communication and interaction among different groups, including those identified by culture, gender, religion, or other distinguishing characteristics. “Communicating” refers to the development, transmission, and understanding of information in any mode— written, digital, oral, visual or aural. It is important for our students to produce, read, understand, and evaluate ideas and knowledge for any situation. Our plan, which combines the goals of growing students’ communication skills and preparing students to participate thoughtfully and effectively in a global workforce, is ambitious, but one we feel well-prepared to enact in this QEP. Before the QEP can be implemented, approval has to be obtained from SACSCOC. If approved, Texas Tech will develop a Center for Global Communication, which will act as a resource for faculty, staff and students. The QEP will be implemented in January 2016.

Texas Tech University’s light is shining brighter than ever. I like to refer to our great institution as a beacon of knowledge and achievement. Nearly 90 years have passed since the institution officially opened for classes, and we haven’t yet reached our pinnacle. We are impacting our future now—graduates from yesterday and today contributing in the workforce; new advancements in research and innovation; and a high quality education that, when merged with our talented students, leads to new levels of success.

2014 Texas Techsan Survey Results

The Texas Techsan magazine was due for another readership survey—the last survey we conducted was five years ago in 2009. I started planning the survey in late 2013 and worked for half of 2014 preparing the survey for the July mailing and emailing.

The Price Group, a local advertising agency, assisted with the emailing and tabulation of the results.

Art Reinauer, is an independent contractor who contracts with insurance company sub-contractors to assess, and settle, storm damage claims for residential and commercial building structures. He also contracts through the National Flood Insurance Program. He has assessed, reviewed, and settled claims for Kemper, Allstate, Farmers, State Farm, Zurich, Nationwide, GuideOne and Auto Owners Insurance Companies.

BRIGHT SPOTS Texas Tech University offers a unique interdisciplinary program leading to the doctorate in Fine Arts. STUDENTS IN THE FINE ARTS DOCTORAL PROGRAM obtain a foundational core of knowledge in multidisciplinary courses in art, music, theatre and philosophy with specialization in a specific area of visual or performing arts.

THE MAEGENE NELSON VISITING SCHOLAR PROGRAM in Cross-Disciplinary Arts has welcomed Pulitzer Prize-winning Playwright Tony Kushner and Chicano art collector Cheech Marin as Visiting Scholars.

Each year, the SCHOOL OF MUSIC hosts three summer camps including band and orchestra camps that annually welcome approximately 550 students from across the country. In addition, the All-State Choir Camp provides instruction for about 130 Texas high school students in attendance.

In 2007, the School of Art expanded to the state-of-the-art 3-D ART ANNEX that houses the disciplines of Jewelry Design & Metalsmithing, Ceramics, and Sculpture. The 3-D Art Annex is one of the finest equipped and safest facilities in the nation.

The dance program moved to the newly-renovated CREATIVE MOVEMENT STUDIO, a fully dedicated space for dance. The CMS had $2.2 million of renovations, including a large studio and theatre, a smaller studio, a smart classroom, men’s and women’s locker areas, and faculty offices. The CMS provides dance and theatre students and faculty with a state of the art space for classes, rehearsals, and performances.

The School of Music’s VERNACULAR MUSIC CENTER is a center for research, teaching and advocacy of the world’s oral-tradition and popular musics. The VMC offers courses, workshops and concerts, and serves as liaison between the School of Music and the community, including the Buddy Holly Symposium, the Caprock Celtic Association, the Fine Arts Academy of India and the Texas Governors Music Office.

Texas Tech’s Newest D

West

With Texas Tech University expecting 40,000 students enrolled by the year 2020, Texas Tech officials made the decision to begin construction on a new campus residence hall, West Village. The project broke ground on July 13, 2013, and took a little more than a year to complete, wrapping up construction on August 15, 2014. The location of this new residence hall is considered ideal for upperclassmen and graduate students because of the proximity to Texas Tech University, Texas Tech University School of Law and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

Located on the corner of 19th Street and Texas Tech Parkway, the 234,500 square foot building holds 455 bed spaces in addition to study areas, conference rooms, office spaces, multipurpose rooms and Raider Exchange, the dining hall located exclusively at West Village.

West Village breaks down into two separate communities for living, Building A for upperclassmen students, and Building B for graduate students and those who are 21 years old or older. The buildings are united by a pedestrian walkway.

Building A houses 308 upperclassmen in fourbedroom apartments. Building B has 147 rooms for students in one and two-bedroom apartments.

Apartments are co-ed by unit much like the Carpenter/Wells Complex and Gordon, Murray, Talkington Halls. Spouses and children of students are not eligible to live at West Village. Both buildings come equipped with full-sized kitchens, including a refrigerator, stove and oven. The apartments also include cable TV and wired and wireless Internet.

Michael Molina, Vice Chancellor of Facilities Planning and Construction for Texas Tech University Systems who graduated from Texas Tech in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in architecture, says that he knew there were several ideas he wanted to incorporate in the dorm.

“Natural light in each room and sound isolation from 19th street were very important,” he says.

Ensuring that the facility was aesthetically accurate in representing the campus style, integration of public art, and overall Wi-Fi connectivity were also things we focused on.”

An important concept that Molina and others considered in the design and construction of West Village was staying within guidelines. LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. To receive LEED certification, building projects satisfy prerequisites and earn points to achieve different levels of certification.

Another appealing aspect of the grounds at West Village is the public art displayed in the courtyard of Building A. “Texas Rising” consists of several stainless steel stars emerging from the ground. The highest portion of the artwork stand 18-feet. Equipped with LED lights inside of the sculptures, the pieces light up and change colors. “Texas Rising” is a part of the Texas Tech University System’s Public Art Program, which was established by the Board of Regents as an investment in the environment on campus and an extension of Texas Tech’s educational mission.

The Public Art Committee commissions original public artworks of the highest quality and are funded using one percent of the estimated total cost of each new major capital project.

“It’s more of a grown-up atmosphere,” Campbell says. “It gives us independence while living on campus. Having my own room and a full-sized kitchen is the biggest difference from living in a traditional room on campus. Having my own space is great but there’s also a community here. You can tell people really enjoy living here.”

“Texas Tech’s Facilities Planning & Construction has a goal to utilize sustainable design efforts on all new facilities,” Molina says. “The level of sustainable components is a fine balance between user priority and building function needs.”

West Village integrates a part of Texas Tech’s agricultural history on its grounds.

Aggie Grove (pictured at left), also known as Elm Grove, is an allée of large Siberian Elm trees that were planted in the 1930’s by then Farm Superintendent Raleigh C. Middleton. They once stretched from West Village to the President’s home, now known as the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Building.

Michael Molina says that he knew keeping the trees was important to the environment and the history of Texas Tech: “We make every effort to save healthy trees. The grove certainly brought much attention early in the planning phase because many Texas Tech alumni had very fond memories of this location.”

Staying true to Texas Tech’s Spanish Renaissance architectural style, West Village was built with the red roof and beautiful arches that have made Texas Tech’s campus so recognizable.

Amanda Knutson, residence life coordinator at West Village, says there are many wonderful aspects to West Village, but the architecture and outside presentation are some of her favorites.

“Aggie Grove and ‘Texas Rising’ are beautiful,” Knutson says. “Those aspects and the lobby here at West Village just make it a joy to come to work every day.”

Molina, an alumnus himself, encourages other alumni to visit the North Plaza at West Village.

“The alumni will experience the design juxtaposition between the contemporary public art and the building façade,” he says. “It’s stunning.”

Courtney Campbell says that when it came time to decide where she’ll living next year, she has chosen to stay at West Village.

“I’ll be moving to the one bedroom graduate apartments in Building B,” she says. “I think it’ll be a big step to move into my own place alone. It’s a big responsibility but I’m really looking forward to living at West Village another year.”

MICA R. ENDSLEY, PH.D. ’82 | ARLINGTON, VA. Mica Endsley earned her bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from Texas Tech University in 1982. She went on to earn a master’s degree from Purdue University and a doctorate from the University of Southern California.

Endsley is the chief scientist of the United States Air Force. She provides independent scientific advice to the secretary of the Air Force and works with top scientists and engineers. She is the first human factors engineer and the first female to serve as chief scientist.

Dan Howard received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Texas Tech University in 1959. He earned his CPA designation in 1960. He began his career in Dallas and then moved back to Lubbock, where he founded Howard, Cunningham, Houchin and Turner, LLP.

TERRY E. FULLER ’77 | FRISCO, TEXAS Terry Fuller received his bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering in 1977 from Texas Tech University. He began his career as a drilling engineer and progressed through numerous supervisory positions with various companies.

Fuller is president and founder of Phoenix PetroCorp., an independent oil and gas production company with operations in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. He remains close to his alma mater and has been named a Texas Tech Distinguished Engineer.

He is a member of the Academy of Petroleum Engineers in the Whitacre College of Engineering. He is chairman of the Texas Tech Foundation Board and has been president of the Red Raider Club.

Teamwork always has been a part of Harold Lyons’ life. Whether playing football or working on multi-million-dollar construction projects, he has used his leadership skills and ability to work with others to reach many goals.

Lyons, an architect and structural engineer, is vice president of AARP, where he oversees 900,000-square-feet of office space for the organization. He is in charge of facilities, real estate, space planning, security and safety, as well as incorporating the latest sustainable building technology into the companies building portfolio.

“We’re a service group,” he says. “If you think about it like this—we are a ship. We are the people who keep the ship running. We keep people comfortable, keep them apprised of the latest information as far as office operations are concerned. We schedule all of the large conferences they have here. We move people when they need to be moved. We help everybody do their work better. If they do a great job, we like to think we have helped the people on the front lines to do the best job that they can.”

Designing and constructing buildings was a lifelong goal for Lyons.

As a child, he was fascinated by buildings, but not just any buildings—high-rise structures, in particular.

He enjoyed looking at them when he was growing up, and later on, that interest grew into a desire to create them. Becoming an architect was the first step Lyons took in order to be able to follow his dream.

He chose to attend Texas Tech to major in architecture with a construction option.

“I went to high school in Lufkin, Texas,” he says.

“The year was 1968, and we had just finished as state runner-up to Daingerfield in Class AA football. I was the captain of the team, and I was All-State Offense and All-State Defense that year. Several schools recruited me, and I decided to go to Texas Tech.”

His college years were busy for Lyons. His major required long hours in the studio. Two professors who really helped him and encouraged him in his studies were Nolan Barrick and Walter Calvert.

In addition to studying architecture, he was an offensive lineman for the Red Raiders, lettering in 1970, 1971 and 1972. He also received the 1972 Dell Morgan Memorial Courage Award for valor on the field. Some of his best college memories involve football.

“I remember we played Texas in 1971 in Austin, and there were 80,000 people there,” he says. “It was the biggest game played in Texas at the time.

We played in two bowl games—the Sun Bowl in 1970 and 1972.”

Lyons was active in several student organizations.

He and 16 other students founded the Eta Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity at Texas Tech, which was the first African-American Greek fraternity on campus.

After graduating from Texas Tech in 1975, Lyons hit the grounding running with his career.

“I moved to Houston and went to work for Brown and Root full-time as a structural engineer,” he says. “I immediately was placed on projects designing off-shore platforms and marine terminal platforms, and I stayed in that division for four or five years. While I was there, I went to school at night at the University of Houston and completed a civil engineering degree.”

Yet he still wanted to work on high-rise buildings. In 1979, some contacts of his in Washington, D.C., set up an appointment for him with a firm in New York City.

“I went to pay a visit in New York, and they didn’t let me go home,” he says. “I went up there with two or three days’ worth of clothes. The whole construction engineering business was in a depression, but New York was leading the way out of the depression in 1979-80, and they needed people.

“I interviewed, and the interviewer said, ‘What are you doing now?’ and I said, ‘Well, I’m going to go back to D.C. then back home.’ He said, ‘Well, we want you to stay here for a couple of weeks.’ I said, ‘Well, I don’t have enough clothes,’ and he said, ‘We’ll take care of that.’ They put me up in a hotel. I was hired on the spot.”

Ironically, after moving to the Big Apple, Lyons’ first two jobs working on high-rise buildings were back Texas—in Houston and in Dallas.

A few years later, Lyons’ career took a different turn when he began working in construction management. He joined Lehrer McGovern Bovis (now Lend Lease) Construction in 1984 as structural project manager and superintendent on the renovation of the Statue of Liberty. He later held positions of project manager, project executive, assistant vice president and vice president with this company through 2000. He gained a lot of experience working with facilities and with developers during that time.

After working with program managers and developers from 2000 to 2009, he saw a listing online for a vice president of facilities position with AARP. With his varied background in design, construction and management, the job appealed to him. He applied and was hired in 2010.

“We have 92 properties with AARP that I oversee from the relocation, retrofit aspect,” he says. “Right now, we’re going through the motions of presenting a business case for realigning the entire company headquarters facility in D.C.

Much like winning a football game, completing a construction project is a victory for architects and engineers.

Seeing a finished project, whether a high-rise building or a renovated office space, is a reminder of how determination and teamwork yield good results.

“Reorganizing the headquarters facility, which is about 560,500-square feet, will create the synergies, improve department adjacency needs and increase collaboration for the different groups. We have about 14 different groups that help run AARP. They’re kind of scattered all over the place right now.

“We also need to renovate the entire building; it’s about 24 years old and hasn’t been renovated fully in 24 years. We need to complete the rest of the building and then do what we call deferred maintenance, which means replacing all of the old, outdated HVAC and electrical equipment. I’ve been right in the midst of it all.”

Although Lyons has a great deal going on in his professional life, he still manages to be active in the D.C. community. He is facilities committee chairman of the Boys and Girls Club and serves on the foundation board for the Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha. Lyons also stays busy with the 100 Black Men of America and Reid TempleNorth AME Church.

He also is proud of his family. His son, Arthur, has just completed a tour in the military and is returning to school. His daughter, Perla Lane, and her husband, have three children. An architect, Perla is a construction project manager with Faithful+Gould in Houston.

“I tried to talk to her out of it, but she went into construction management,” Lyons says. “She has an undergraduate degree in architecture and a master’s in construction management from New York University Polytechnic School of Engineering, which was Brooklyn Polytech at the time.”

T EX A S TEC H’ S MO TTO throughout the 2014 season has been fairly simple--”Not Done Yet.” The Red Raiders, in the third round of the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history, came close to continuing that saying Nov. 23 by overcoming an early 2-0 deficit before eventually falling, 3-2, to Florida at Donald R. Dizney Stadium.

Tech ended its season at 16-4-2 overall following an effort that saw the Red Raiders trailing after 20 minutes and then tied with 15 minutes remaining up until Annie Speese’s gamewinner in the 81st minute.

The loss ended the careers of the most successful senior class in Tech history that featured the likes of Hinkle and fellow captain Paige Strahan as well as Erin Inman, Bridgett Jenkins, Taylor Narvaiz and Alex Romanelli.

T HE TEX A S TEC H soccer program was honored the week of Nov. 23 with the NSCAA Team Academic Award that is presented to schools across the country with a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

To qualify for the award, the team must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined by adding every player’s GPA and then dividing by the total number of players.

Tech compiled a 3.30 team GPA during the 2013-14 academic year which was boosted by 20 student athletes’ posting at least one semester with a 3.50 or better GPA.

Hinkle, who has compiled a 3.81 grade-point average while majoring in human sciences, is the third Red Raider in program history to be named an Academic All-American by CoSIDA. Her award marks the second-straight year where Texas Tech has had a soccer student athlete honored as a first team Academic All-American. Tech is the only program nationally to have a student athlete named to the first team in each of the past two seasons.

Hinkle is the only Red Raider in program history to be named an Academic All-American as well as a NSCAA AllAmerica, as she was named to the third team in 2013.

Janine Beckie made her first career appearance with the Canadian Senior National Team Nov. 26 during its 1-1 draw with Sweden at George Allen Field on the campus of Long Beach State.

The appearance marked the first career cap for Beckie, who received the call up Nov. 23 and later arrived in California prior to the first match in the series with Sweden.

Beckie was inserted into the match at halftime after a scoreless first half. She played the final 45 minutes as Canada overcame a Sweden goal in the 57th minute to tie the match roughly 18 minutes later.

This experience is the second international one for Beckie in the past year, as she competed with Canada during last summer’s FIFA U-20 World Cup. Beckie was Canada’s leading scorer in the tournament with two goals and an assist.

Beckie, the 2014 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, will continue to train with the Canadian Senior National Team during various points of the spring as she hopes to make the final roster for this summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup that will be hosted in Canada.

OLLI Emma Carrasco, MBA, M.Ed.

in the Texas Hill Country has much to offer its residents—scenic beauty, recreational activities and a varied cultural experience. One more offering beginning in 2015 is continuing education.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Texas Tech University is expanding its footprint to include the Texas Tech locations at Fredericksburg, Junction and Marble Falls. OLLI is designed for adults age 50+ who are still working, semi-retired or fully retired. OLLI offers noncredit courses in everything from literature and politics to music and wine tasting with food pairing.

OLLI is self-sustaining, supported through membership dues, class fees, an endowment from the Bernard Osher Foundation, donations and in-kind support from the Texas Tech Alumni Association and Texas Tech University.

OLLI is administered and housed by the Texas Tech Alumni Association.

Emma Carrasco, director of OLLI at Texas Tech and a member of the organization, says she began plans to extend OLLI to the Hill Country five years ago but that the interest and support wasn’t there at that time. When Texas Tech University President M. Duane Nellis, Ph.D., came on board, she presented her plan to him. He supported the program.

“OLLI provides an wonderful opportunity for its participants to remain engaged in education and offers a diverse array of topics for varying interests,” Nellis says. “We are proud of our association with this program and encourage anyone interested to request information and consider joining many others, who have benefited from the OLLI experience.”

Once the plan was approved by the OLLI board of directors in Lubbock, Tom Hutton, M.D., Ph.D., formerly of Lubbock, signed on as the chair of OLLI-TTU/Hill Country Advisory Board. The group formed committees, elected officers, did some fundraising and developed curriculum.

“Residents of the Hill Country express enthusiasm for the OLLI program,” Hutton says. “We have a large, well educated, retired community that seeks continuing education. OLLI is like healthy food for the brain. On a personal level it provides a fix for my own continual learning needs. As a neurologist, OLLI strikes me as insurance for the brain to prevent memory loss.”

Classes will be held at all three locations. Local residents who are professionals and retired faculty will donate their time to teach the classes, which will be held in the afternoon and early evening.

A kickoff Winter Party to introduce OLLI to the community at no charge will take place Feb. 19, from 5-8 p.m., at the Texas Tech University

Frederickburg location for all three sites. There will be a formal announcement about OLLI in the Hill Country, and Nellis will give opening remarks. The event also includes a social hour and light meal.

The next day, Tibor Nagy, vice provost for international affairs at Texas Tech and former United States Ambassador to Guinea and Ethiopia, will teach the first class in Fredericksburg.

“We will not charge for membership in OLLI for the 2015 Spring Semester in the Hill Country,” Carrasco says. “We want people to come learn about us. We will charge class fees in the spring, though.”

1958 WICK ALEXANDER (BS Zoology)

Arlington, Texas, celebrated the 50th anniversary of his family-owned practice Drs. Alexander Orthodontics. He began the practice in 1964 and now works alongside his son, Moody. Wick pioneered the Alexander Discipline, a premier orthodontic method that has revolutionized lasting smiles and has been taught in more than 50 countries worldwide. His wife is Janna.

1970 KEN LITTLE (BFA Art) San Antonio, Texas, unveiled his exhibit that honors 36 classic Texas songs. His public art installation called “Belt It Out” consists of 36 bronze belts with classic Texas song lyrics on them. The pieces line the boardwalk of Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas.

KEN FERGESON (BBA Management, MS Agricultural Economics) Altus, Okla., was honored by the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits with its Lifetime Achievement Award at the organization’s fourth annual Visions event held in November. Ken will be recognized for his contribution to the banking industry and for serving key roles in his community and Oklahoma.

He is the chairman of the board of directors for NBC Oklahoma, which is comprised of banks in Altus, Enid, Kingfisher, Tulsa and Oklahoma City. He has served as a director on more than 40 boards and councils working for the arts, education and banking on local, state and national levels. His wife is Mary.

She is a training specialist with the Chickasaw Nation in Ada, Okla., where she also worked as a grant writer and grants program manager. Before relocating in Oklahoma, Colleen was an adjunct professor in the Texas Tech College of Human Sciences from 2002-2006.

EMILY DE SANTOS , a se-

nior electronic media and communications major, has received a Founders’ Scholarship from The Headliners Foundation of Texas. She has served as a photographer at The Daily Toreador for six semesters.

Of those six semesters, she has spent the past two as photo editor. She has also freelanced for The Midland Reporter Telegram and contributed to the College of Media & Communication’s magazine, The MC.

THE TEX A S TEC H University School of Law won the championship at Stetson University College of Law’s Seventh Annual National Pretrial Competition in Gulfport, Fla. The win marks the 32nd championship in national or international competitions for the advocacy programs.

In addition to winning the overall championship, Texas Tech Law also won the Best Memorandum of Law Award for the Plaintiff.

Texas Tech Law outpaced the Chicago-Kent College of Law for the overall title while the Regent University and Mississippi College law schools were the other semifinalists.

Two members of the Texas Tech Law team picked up individual honors as well. KATHERINE HANDY , a third-year law student, won the Best Advocate Award in the final round, and JOHN RODDY PACE , a third-year law student, was named Best Advocate in the semifinal round.

DELANEY CROCKER , a third-year law student, and CALEB MILLER , a third-year law student, combined to win the Best Memorandum of Law Award for the Plantiff.

received the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters Scholarship from The Headliners Foundation of Texas. Originally from Mexico City, she has spent the last nine years in Texas. In Spring 2013, she joined KXTQ, the local Telemundo affiliate, where she co-produces, anchors and manages social media and web content. In addition, she is involved with the College of Media & Communication’s student newscast, “MCTV Weekday Update,” where she anchors and reports.

Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) student chapter received for the eighth year a gold-level award for the 2014 HFES Student Chapter Awards. Gold-level status is the highest level possible for the chapter awards.

Members of this organization are primarily undergraduate and graduate students majoring in either Industrial Engineering or Human Factors Psychology. The Texas Tech HFES chapter focuses on creating networking opportunities with those in the human factors community and educating their members and others about relevant topics in human factors.
