The Who

The Who Bring Their “The Who Hits Back” Tour To The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion May 8th! By Kevin Wildman I’m happy and pleased to announce that the #1 Band In The World, The Who, are on the road again with a brand new tour dubbed The Who Hits Back! I realize that journalists and more or less, magazine publishers, probably shouldn’t make statements like that, but screw it, The Who have always been my favorite band. Yeah, I started listening to a lot of 6

Music News • April 2022

music as a young child, but when I heard the opening salvo of “My Generation” back in 1965, I was hooked. I may have heard “My Generation” before a lot of kids heard it in the U.S., as I was living in Spain at the time and a lot of British music was making it there before they made it to America. Nevertheless, I was hooked. Their first album just blew me away. Songs like “I’m A Man” and “LaLa-La-Lies” was unlike anything I’d

ever heard before. For me, they blew The Beatles away. I knew that in a street fight, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend would kick their asses. While The Beatles presented a more lovey-dovey theme of music, The Who seemed to be street fighters. Their songs were more raw and unrefined and had a sense of “balls” to them. Then the second Who continued on next page

The Who continued from previous page album was released, A Quick One (1966). Songs like “Whiskey Man” and “Boris The Spider” were just fantastic. Yeah, I knew I liked these guys. This was quickly followed by The Who Sell Out in 1967, which featured a collection of songs intertwined with fake commercials and public service announcements. Some of the great songs on here included “Armenia City In The Sky,” “Mary Anne with the Shaky Hand,” “Tattoo,” “Can’t Reach You,” and the amazing “I Can See For Miles.” I was more enthralled by the band now. 1969 brought the release of the legendary Rock Opera Tommy. I’m not afraid to admit it, Tommy is my favorite album of all time. I could not believe what these guys were doing with the music. I heard notes and melodies that I didn’t even know existed. It sounds weird, but if you really listen to the album, you’ll hear music that was well ahead of its time. Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon were an unbelievably tight outfit. It was that album that really cemented my faith in the band. For me, I knew THIS was the greatest band in the world and I’ve believed it ever since. Okay, I know it’s only my opinion, but if you’re reading this story, then you will just have to put up with me saying that. Finally, I actually got to see the band live. My first Who concert was on June 20th, 1970 in Houston, Texas at a basketball arena at The University Of Houston called Hofheinz Pavilion. I was only 16 years old and I was a Who addict. I just couldn’t get enough. This concert was about a year or so after they had released Tommy and they had been spending their time on the road perfecting this masterpiece. I remember the concert as if I had just walked out of the venue today. Roger Daltrey’s voice was fantastic. He had been singing all of Tommy for a little over a year now and the vocals for Pete Townshend’s masterpiece were perfected. The band hit the stage with a thunderous applause and dove straight into “Heaven And Hell.” I had never

heard this song before, and it just blew me away. From there they launched into “I Can’t Explain,” “Young Man Blues,” and another song I had never heard before, “I Don’t Even Know Myself” followed by another first for me, “Water.” And then they announced that their conductor, Mr. Keith Moon was going to conduct the intro to Tommy. From there they headed straight into the entire Tommy album. This was just the best night of my life. I had actually smuggled a Sony cassette recorder into the concert and recorded the entire show and for years I would listen to that tape over and over again until one day it was stolen out of my car. Shit happens! Other songs performed this night were “Summertime Blues,” “Substitute,” “My Generation,” “Naked Eye,” and the band finished their set with “Magic Bus.” And now you would probably want me to end this intro and get into the particulars of the tour, but I’m going to throw one more thing at you….. How can you follow up an album as

groundbreaking as Tommy. Is it even possible? Well, yes it is! And the answer is Who’s Next! and then Quadrophenia. Who’s Next! was another musical masterpiece yielding such hit songs as “Baba O’Riley,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” and the chart topping ballad, “Behind Blue Eyes.” Quadrophenia yielded such classics as “The Real Me,” “Quadrophenia,” “5:15,” and “Doctor Jimmy,” just to name a few. It even spawned a movie of the same name which featured non-other than Police singer and bassist, Sting. Yes folks, this is my favorite band and I’m more than happy to let you know that MY FAVORITE BAND, THE WHO will be on the road in North America starting April 22nd. The first show of the tour will be at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida, with the first half of their tour concluding on May 28th at Bethel Wood Center of the Arts in Bethel, New York. continued on next page April 2022 • Music News

The Who continued from previous page Then the band will be taking a summer break before heading back on the road for their second leg of the tour. The second leg of their tour resumes at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario on October 2nd and concludes November 5th in Las Vegas. I personally plan on attending their May 8th show at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands, TX, near Houston. If anybody wants to send me to any of their other shows, I’m open - Just Saying… This tour follows their sold-out tour of two years ago, the Moving On! Tour. For that tour you could find the band performing with an orchestra. Let me tell you, that was unbelievable. 8 Music News • April 2022

We’re told that that will be happening again. They will be sharing the stage again with some of the finest orchestras you’ve ever listened to in the United States and Canada. If you haven’t heard The Who with an orchestra, then you’re in for a real treat. It depicts a whole new side to the band. Roger Daltrey tells us that “Pete and I said we’d be back, but we didn’t think we’d have to wait for two years for the privilege. This is making the chance to perform feel even more special this time around. So many livelihoods have been impacted due to Covid, so we are thrilled to get everyone back together the band, the crew and the fans. We’re gearing up for a great show that hits back in the only way The Who know how. By giving it everything we got.” Besides performing with an orchestra, The Who will be bringing their

full band with them which includes Pete’s younger brother Simon Townshend on guitar, keyboardists Loren Gold and Emily Marshall, bassist Jon Button, backing vocalist Billy Nicholls, lead violinist Katie Jacoby, lead cellist Audrey Snyder, and last but certainly not least, their drummer for many years, the amazing Zac Starkey. Zac is the son of legendary Beatle drummer Ringo Starr. Conducting the orchestra will be Keith Levenson. The Who are revered to be among the Top Three Rock Bands in History which includes The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. To this date, it is estimated that they have performed 2,254 Concerts around the world. The majority of The Who’s songs have been meticulously crafted by the amazing guitarist and composer, Pete Townshend. continued on next page

The Who continued from previous page His musical visions have been the guiding light for this band since their inception. Performing lead vocals throughout their career has been Roger Daltrey. Face it, without Roger Daltrey, The Who would have no voice. His trademark vocals are synonymous with the band’s success. Nobody could ever sing a Who song like Roger. Along the way, they’ve lost two valuable members of the band, bassist John Entwistle and drummer Keith Moon. No, it isn’t the same band today that started out performing together on January 9th, 1962 at Acton Town Hall in London anymore, but the remaining members of Pete and Roger are bound and determined to keep the legacy of The Who alive for many more years to come. The Who’s 2019 MOVING ON! Tour took the band through 29 cities, including an exciting sold-out show in Boston’s Fenway Park, and a Seattle show where Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder joined them onstage for the song “The Punk And the Godfather.” The tour generated the most unanimous outpouring of acclaim from critics and fans of any live rock show in 2019, winning raves across North America for the orchestral dynamic as well as the duo’s cathartic rock firepower and intimate acoustic numbers. “They’re not getting older. They’re getting better. You better, you better, you bet.” reported the Worcester Telegram, with Pollstar Magazine agreeing “Daltrey is in peak form, and so is Townshend, lavishing his trademarked windmill guitar motion.” If you only see one concert this year, and god forbid that, make sure it is The Who. They always put on a fantastic show! Who albums include: My Generation (1965) A Quick One (1966) The Who Sell Out (1967) Tommy (1969) Live At Leeds (1970) Who’s Next (1971) Meaty, Beaty, Big & Bouncy (1971) Quadrophenia (1973) Odds & Sods (1974)

debut album. As much as I have been fortunate to get ‘Outside Of This Town’ (the title of his breakout single from his 2019 Grammy-nominated debut album, Kingfish), I do want people to know that the ‘662’ will always be a major part of who I am.”

CHRISTONE “KINGFISH” INGRAM BRINGS 662: JUKE JOINT LIVE TOUR TO HOUSTON! Christone “Kingfish” Ingram will celebrate the release of his Grammy-nominated Alligator Records album, 662, with a live performance at the Cullen Performance Hall in Houston on Friday, April 29, 2022. Ingram’s headlining tour, entitled “Christone “Kingfish” Ingram Presents 662 : Juke Joint Live,” has already taken the 23-yearold guitarist, vocalist and songwriter across the U.S. and Europe, with many more dates to come. In addition to the Grammy nomination (his second in two years), 662 was named the #1 Best Blues Album of 2021 by UK tastemaker magazine, MOJO. Rolling Stone declared, “Kingfish is one of the most exciting young guitarists in years, with a sound that encompasses B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix and Prince.” On Thursday, February 10, 2022, the Blues Foundation announced the nominees for the 43rd Annual Blues Music Awards. Contemporary Blues Album Of The Year: 662 and Contemporary Blues Male Artist Of The Year. The awards ceremony will be held in Memphis, Tennessee on Thursday, May 5, 2022. Upon its July 2021 release, 662 debuted at #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart, and it’s remained on the chart ever since. Buddy Guy called him “the next explosion of blues.” 662 was recorded in Nashville and cowritten and produced by Grammywinner Tom Hambridge. It features 13 songs (and one previously released bonus track) displaying many sides of Ingram’s personality, as well as his one-of-a-kind guitar and vocal skills. According to Ingram, “662 is an ode to my roots, a nod to the area where I was born and raised. The title track, 662, encompasses how a small corner of the earth influenced my view of life and music. It also points to the growth I have had since my

Since the release of Kingfish, Ingram has quickly become the defining blues voice of his generation. From Clarksdale, Mississippi to stages around the world, the young musician has already headlined two national tours (Fish Grease I & II ) and performed with friends including Vampire Weekend, Jason Isbell and Buddy Guy (with whom he appeared on Austin City Limits). He was interviewed by Sir Elton John on his Apple Music podcast Rocket Hour, and recently released songs with Bootsy Collins and Bobby Rush. In January 2021, Ingram was simultaneously on the covers of both Guitar World and DownBeat magazines and graced the cover of Living Blues in late 2020. He was also on the cover of Rock And Blues International in August of 2021. NPR Music says Ingram’s playing is “astounding…it’s almost like he’s singing through the guitar.” On 662, Ingram creates contemporary blues that speaks to his generation and beyond, delivering the full healing power of the music. No Depression calls Ingram, “a young bluesman with an ancient soul and a large presence in the here-andnow.” Living Blues says, “By any measure, Kingfish is one of the brightest new stars of his generation.” Be sure to read the acclaimed interview with Christone “Kingfish” Ingram in the August 2021 issue of Rock And Blues International at http:// www.rockandbluesinternational.com. In this story, Christone goes in detail about the making of his landmark album release, 662.

Campbell (Muse, Beyoncé). All that was left was the final piece of the puzzle...the voice. Things clicked into place when Cavallo was producing Hart’s previous album, ‘War In My Mind’ (2019), and she did an impromptu version of “Whole Lotta Love” in the studio. He later asked about doing a whole record. Beth said, “I’m not doing this whole album. To do Zeppelin, you’ve got to be pissed off to hit that right. I can’t go there; I’ve worked years to put my rage away.” She continues, “then the pandemic and all the things around it hit. So now I’m pissed off. I called my manager and said, have Rob and Doug send me all the music because I am ready to do this.” Photo: Greg Watermann

Beth Hart Performs In Houston at Bayou Music Center April 23rd Touring in support of her new album, Beth Hart: A Tribute To Led Zeppelin Check out her rendition of Black Dog here at https://youtu.be/xNgQtP4zk5E As a child, the sound of Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog” traveled from the Grammy-nominated vocalist Beth Hart’s neighbor’s house into her orbit. Her brother introduced her to the heavy rock of Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, and her major-label debut came on Atlantic with the 1996 release of ‘Immortal’ - the same label that introduced Led Zeppelin to the world in 1969. Now, Hart is paying tribute to one of the most formative musical influences of her career with the release of ‘A Tribute To Led Zeppelin,’ out February 25th via Provogue/Mascot Label Group. Anchoring the nine-track album is a blistering take on Led Zeppelin’s 1971 hit “Black Dog,” the opening track of their legendary fourth studio album. At the helm during the recording of ‘A Tribute To Led Zeppelin’ was super-producer Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance) and engineer Doug McKean (Goo Goo Dolls, Adam Lambert). If you were to rewind, you could say the story for a Led Zeppelin album started further back; in May 2004 Hart prowled the stage at the Paradiso in Amsterdam for an incendiary performance of “Whole Lotta Love”. The song became a semi-regular fixture in her setlist over the years, including a memorable performance with Slash. Earlier on in Beth’s career, former VP of Led Zeppelin’s Swan Song label, Alan Callan, recommended Beth contact Jeff Beck to work together. Hart and Beck have gone on to form a beautiful friendship. Beck and Jimmy Page are also friends, and for a while, bandmates in The Yardbirds. After Beck’s departure from the band, they would eventually become Led Zeppelin. Buddy Guy, she received a standing ovation from Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones. Talking about the music and legacy of Zeppelin, she says, “it’s so beautifully done, it’s timeless. It will go on forever. Sometimes people come along, and they’re from another planet, and they make these pieces of art which will forever be.” Hart is recognized as one of her generation’s most talented voices. She has sold out tours worldwide, including performances at historic venues such as Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, London’s Royal Albert Hall, and the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam. She’s topped the Billboard Blues charts six times, gone double platinum and had a string of Top 10 charting albums across Europe. On a final thought, Beth pauses and reflects to say, “this Zeppelin album allowed me to get all my rage out, and for that, I’m really grateful.” Beth Hart is as real as it gets. In a music industry full of glossy production and airbrushed photoshoots, this is one artist who throws down her cards, shares her darkest secrets and invites you to join her for the ride. With War In My Mind, this Grammy-nominated talent has never served herself up so raw on a record, one that embraces her merits and flaws, channels her bittersweet headspace and spins gold from her demons. “More than any record I’ve ever made, I’m more open to being myself on these songs,” Beth explains. “I’ve come a long way with healing, and I’m comfortable with my darknesses, weirdnesses and things that I’m ashamed of – as well as all the things that make me feel good.” At 47 – and proud of it – Beth is basking in a golden period of time. The success of 2016’s Fire On The Floor album has garnered yet more critical acclaim, growing sales and sold-out shows at iconic venues from the Ryman Auditorium to the Royal Albert Hall (scene of last year’s triumphant live DVD). But as the singer reminds us, her life has always moved in cycles – “things get good then go to crap, get good then go to crap” – and it’s in these extremes that many of her best songs are born. “A lot of subjects are covered on War In My 16 Music News • April 2022

Mind,” she reflects. “I’ve always tried to seek the truth on every record I’ve done. But on this album, I’m even closer to vulnerability and openness about my life, about love, addiction, my bipolar, my dad, my sister...” New fans might know Beth as the all-conquering global icon, dubbed “extraordinary” by The Times and “daring, brooding and angry” by The Guardian. But to understand her rollercoaster backstory, you need only read the War In My Mind lyric sheet. Highs and lows alike are candidly recounted as the songwriter reaches back through the decades and tells her tale without flinching. There are memories from her ’70s childhood in Los Angeles, where Beth announced her musical talent and renegade spirit, while rolling with the punches of a chaotic upbringing – about the loss of her beloved sister, Sharon – about the personal problems that derailed what should have been her major-label breakthrough in the mid-’90s – about her collaboration with blues-rock maestro Joe Bonamassa – about the redemption offered by her husband Scott, and the rebirth she found through the church. War In My Mind also wraps up a frustrating strand of unfinished business for Beth. Back in 2003, the heavyweight producer Rob Cavallo was in the frame to mix the singer’s Leave The Light On album. “But the producer I was with at the time,” recounts Beth, “went ahead without my approval, turned the mix in to Rob – and he passed.” Fast-forward 15 years, and at a chance dinner party attended by the Green Day and My Chemical Romance producer, fate intervened. “I’d just written the songs Rub Me For Luck, Woman Down and

Sister Dear, about my sister Susan,” Beth remembers. “The host wanted me to play them on piano, and I thought people would prefer me to just sit, eat and zip it, but in the end I just said, ‘OK, frick it’. After I’d played them, Rob came up and said, ‘You’ve grown a lot as a songwriter – and I want to record these songs with you’. And he turned out to be one of the coolest people that I’ve ever worked with.” The immersive sound of War In My Mind is visceral and alive, every song a testament to Cavallo’s production smarts – and the golden touch of mix engineer Doug McKean. “But actually,” counters Beth, “I think one of Rob’s greatest talents is that he completely allows artists to have their own vision. Never once did I have anything disappointing happen to one of these songs.” Having followed the fascinating career of Beth Hart for a quarter-century, we’ve learned not to rule anything out – so long as it’s real. And now, with War In My Mind, this songwriter has made a record that bares her soul, wears her heart on her sleeve, and makes no apology for it. “Y’know,” she concludes, “when we did the photoshoot for this new album, it was the first time that I said, ‘No makeup and no airbrushing’. It was the first time that hearing my voice back didn’t make me sick. It was just neat to be 47 and not trying to be young, and competitive, and all of these things that I’ve always felt like I’m supposed to be. On this record, something told me, just let it be what it is, man. I think I’m starting to make a little headway, getting closer to the truth. And I might not know what the truth is... but I’m OK with that.”

Eugene is a nomadic musician living his life on the road. His home is wherever the next performance takes him, and every year this is from America through Europe, to Australia with many other stops in between. Born in 1963 in New Orleans and raised in Amite, Louisiana, the son of Otheneil Bridges Sr, also known as blues guitarist Hideaway Slim, Eugene is the fourth child of five. His mother was from the Bullock family (the same as Anna Mae Bullock better known as Tina Turner) and Eugene claims he got his guitar skills from the Bridges side and his voice from the Bullocks. At five he was already playing with his father around Louisiana; with his brothers as The Bridges Brothers he sang gospel and was the musician of his church touring with the Pastor, Elder AA Edwards. At thirteen Eugene was entering R&B talent shows and had formed his first R&B band The Five Stars. Aged sixteen Eugene joined the Air Force, playing in the Air Force band for the next three years. On leaving the Air Force he joined The New Chosen on guitar and vocals and went on to play with The Mighty Clouds of Joy. Following a move to Houston, Texas in the 1980’s Eugene released Blues, Gospel and R&B recordings by the three bands he was running at the time. These included the first line-up of the Eugene ‘Hideaway’ Bridges Band. They toured the USA from coast to coast. Eugene then travelled alone to Europe, where BB King Bassist, Big Joe Turner spotted him in Paris and offered him the position of guitarist and vocalist with Big Joe Turners Memphis Blues Caravan. A year later Eugene left to work under his own name again and formed The Eugene Hideaway Bridges Band. Signed to the Blueside label, Eugene recorded Born to be Blue, produced by Mike Vernon. His live performances received rave reviews and Eugene was awarded UK’s Blueprint Magazine Vocalist of the Year. He also won The Trophees France Blues 99 Chanteur De L’Annee. In 2000 Eugene signed to Armadillo Music and released his next CD, Man Without A Home, which got worldwide airplay. Eugene appeared, often headlining, at major festivals in the USA, all over Europe, Singapore, New Zealand and Australia, whipping up a storm wherever he went with his distinctive southern sound. The 2003 release, Jump the Joint, reached Number 4 in the US Living Blues Charts, charting for three months. Eugene’s songs also appeared regularly in The National Association of Rhythm & Blues DeeJay charts. He was nominated for three 2003 US Cammy Music Awards. In September 2004 Eugene recorded his next CD, Coming Home, at The Zone Studio in Dripping Springs, Texas, using a full horn section on several tracks, led by Seth Kibel. Texan guitarist and friend Rocky Athas also joined him on two cuts. After four CDs recorded with a full band, Eugene’s next self titled release Eugene Hideaway Bridges was recorded with friends and fellow musicians met on the road. Lucky Oceans co-founder of the Western Swing band Asleep at the Wheel plays Pedal Steel on three tracks and Texan legend Ray Wylie Hubbard lays down some fine Slide Guitar on I Can’t Wait. This CD was nominate for two 2008 US Blues Music Awards. March 2009 saw Eugene in San Antonio to fulfil his fans wishes for a Live CD. With the line up of Bobby Baranowski on Drums, Eric King Bass, David Webb Keys, Seth Kibel Sax and Justine Miller on Trumpet, you have the real deal. Live in San Antonio was nominated for two 2011 Blues Music Awards in the Soul Blues Album and Soul Blues Artist Categories. January 2011 Eugene is back in the Zone Studio, Dripping Springs, Texas with Pat Manske as Producer. Pat has previously produced both of Eugene’s Blues Music Award nominated albums. The new CD Rock And A Hard Place is Eugene and his big band. Horns again led and arranged by long time collaborator and maestro Seth Kibel. David Webb on Keyboards, Hammond B3, Piano and Wurlitzer, Lloyd Maines on Pedal Steel, Eric Lollipop King on Bass Guitar, Calep Emphrey on Drums, Seth Kibel on Alto, Tenor, Baritone Saxophones and Flute, Shane Pitsch on Trumpet and Mark V Gonzales on Trombone. Blues, Soul, Jump, Funk, Gospel, Rock and Beach Music all make Eugene’s CD an upbeat journey through all the musical influences that 18 Music News • April 2022

Eugene Hideaway Bridges Performs at Green Oaks Tavern on April 22nd have made Eugene the seasoned and versatile performer we have today. The Blues Music Awards are universally recognized as the highest accolade afforded to musicians and songwriters within blues music. Turning fifty in 2013, Eugene wanted to put together an eclectic, retrospective collection of thirteen of his own songs and four covers in Roots & Vines. Moving from a traditional song learnt in church as a young child, to songs about his life, travel, lost loves and a treasured 1981 Datsun 720 truck Nelly Bell! Eugene’s 2015 release Hold on a Little Bit Longer features a full horn section on several songs led by John Mills with Kevin Flatt on Trumpet and Jon Blondell Trombone. Bobby Baranowski is back on Drums, with Otto Williams, Bassist, who first played with Eugene 15 years ago. Australian Clayton Doley plays Hammond B3 & Piano. Guesting on the title song, playing slide guitar, is Micky Moody, better known for his time with Whitesnake. Hold on a Little Bit Longer charted at #6 in The Living Blues Charts for September 2015. The Blues Foundation Memphis, TN nominated Hold on a Little Bit Longer for two 2016 Blues Music Awards in the Contemporary Blues Album & Contemporary Blues Male Artist categories. In 2017 The US Jus’ Blues Music Foundation announced that Eugene Hideaway Bridges was to be their 2017 honoree for the Albert King Lifetime Award, “The Lucy Award”, for his outstanding contributions in continuing to keep the style of traditional Blues alive. Inspired by this award and in memory of his bluesman father, Othineil Bridges Sr “Hideaway Slim” 1938 – 2015, Eugene has gone back to his roots. This is the music Eugene learnt as a child sitting on the front porch, where “Hideaway Slim” showed Eugene how to play the blues. Cold Is Coming to The Scout Bar April 13! COLD to Embark on “Black Sunday” US Headlining Tour This Month! Alt-rock trailblazers COLD are getting ready to head back out on the road! The band will embark on their “Black Sunday” Tour later this month. The 36-date trek kicked off on March 29 in Mechanicsburg, PA, and concludes in Warrendale, PA on May 15. Joining COLD on this run is support from University Drive and Black Satellite. At the turn of the century, COLD unveiled the seminal 13 Ways To Bleed On Stage, which went Gold and yielded hits such as “Just Got Wicked”, “No One”, and “End of the World”. Their 2003 follow-up, Year of the Spider, marked their highest chart position, bowing at #3 on the Billboard Top 200, receiving a Gold certification, and spawning the smash “Stupid Girl” accompanied by Rivers Cuomo of Weezer. 2005’s A Different Kind of Pain illuminated melodic strides to the tune of 37,000-plus copies sold first-week and a Top 30 debut. Meanwhile, 2011’s Superfiction continued this streak, crashing the Top 10 of the Top Rock Albums Chart upon arrival and extending a growing legacy. The past few years have been

transformational for COLD – most notably with the successful 2019 release of their latest studio album, The Things We Can’t Stop. Enduring the challenges of the COVID pandemic, the band has managed to tour consistently over the last few years and will return to the road in North America in 2022. Jacksonville, Florida-based alternative metal outfit Cold started out by sharing the aesthetic of another Florida band, Limp Bizkit. Both groups favored technically complex, bleak, and brutal metal that merged elements of Jane’s Addiction, Metallica, and Tool, but Cold also embraced elements of shoegaze and soaring, Snow Patrol-esque alternative rock. Bizkit frontman Fred Durst actually discovered Cold playing in the Jacksonville area and helped them sign to the A&M subsidiary Flip. Emerging in 1998, the band caught fire in the early 2000s with the albums 13 Ways to Bleed on Stage (2000) and Year of the Spider (2003), both of which were certified Gold. Cold went on hiatus in 2006, but re-formed a few years later as a touring entity. They returned to the studio in 2011 and released Superfiction, another commercial success, followed in 2019 by

Originally operating under the moniker Grundig, and for a very short time as Diablo, Cold coalesced in 1996 around a core line-up consisting of Scooter Ward (vocals, guitar), Kelly Hayes (guitar), Jeremy Marshall (bass), and Sam McCandless (drums). The band caught the attention of Limp Bizkit bandleader Fred Durst, who passed a pair of demos on to producer Ross Robinson, who helmed the group’s eponymous debut album. Released via Durst’s A&M Records imprint Flip, Cold arrived in the summer of 1998, and through constant touring the combo earned a devoted following both at home and across the country. They added a second guitarist, Terry Balsalmo, to the ranks for their sophomore effort. Released in 2000 via Geffen/Interscope, which had absorbed A&M the year prior, 13 Ways to Bleed on Stage became Cold’s breakthrough, achieving Gold status via the mainstream rock hits “End of the World,” “Just Got Wicked,” and “No One.” Featuring their biggest hit to date, “Stupid Girl,” 2003’s Year of the Spider was even more successful, debuting at number three on the Billboard Album charts and eventually taking the same golden path as its predecessor: the band sold over 100,000 copies of the album in its first week of release. By this point, Cold was moving steadily away from the Limp Bizkit model in favor of a moodier sound suggestive of contemporaries like Staind, Fuel, and Seether. Despite Year of the Spider doing well with rock fans, Geffen soured on Cold in the midst of promotion for the album. Being dropped from the label led to internal strife. Guitarist Kelly Hayes departed, guitarist Terry Balsamo left to join Evanescence, and drummer Sam McCandless and vocalist Scooter Ward were left high and dry. Then a family member of Ward’s became ill, and the future of Cold looked bleak. However, the band endured. They signed a new deal with Lava/Atlantic, and issued the less aggressive and more melody-driven A Different Kind of Pain in August 2005. By this point, Cold’s lineup included Ward, McCandless, guitarists Matt Loughran and Mike Booth, and bassist Jeremy Marshall. After the release of A Different Kind of Pain, the group parted, with Ward and McCandless launching a band that became the Killer and the Star. By the time the Killer and the Star released their debut album in 2009, Cold’s original lineup had reunited. They mounted a tour in 2009, then set about recording a new album, Superfiction, which was released in the summer of 2011 and quickly shot to the upper echelons of the Billboard Independent, Alternative, and Hard Rock Albums charts. Cold set up camp with Napalm Records for their sixth studio long-player, 2019’s The Things We Can’t Stop.

work. After the album’s stateside release, James’ best friend from childhood, Patrick Hallahan, was recruited as the band’s new drummer.

My Mornng Jacket Perform at White Oak Music Hall My Morning Jacket have embarked on a U.S. headline tour. The shows start in April, following the group’s One Big Holiday event in Mexico. They will be appearing in Houston at White Oak Music Hall on April 27th. The show in Houston is scheuled to include support from Madison Cunningham My Morning Jacket released their self-titled album last year. Hailed as the new heroes of the altcountry scene when they debuted in the late 1990s, My Morning Jacket matured into an eclectic, sonically diverse ensemble whose work encompassed indie rock, psychedelia, folk, blues, and even dashes of funk and prog rock. Led by songwriter and lead vocalist Jim James, My Morning Jacket’s music is most strongly rooted in Americana, with Neil Young, the Band, and the psychedelic end of the ’60s folk scene as obvious reference points. However, James and his bandmates have shown a frequent interest in pushing their boundaries, adding new flavors over the course of their career while holding on to the strong melodies and impassioned vocals that were their calling cards. The reverb-enhanced indie folk of their debut album, 1999’s The Tennessee Fire, set the groundwork for MMJ’s music, and their major-label debut, 2003’s It Still Moves, added increasingly precise production and a more pop-oriented melodic approach while holding on to their rootsy frameworks. 2008’s Evil Urges saw MMJ

experimenting with prog rock and funk elements as they continued to challenge the expectations of their audience, and 2011’s Circuital was even more ambitious, with the songs running the gamut from hard rock into fully orchestrated pop. After a pair of especially elaborate and eclectic albums (2015’s The Waterfall and 2020’s The Waterfall II), the band returned to more organic and personal form on 2021’s My Morning Jacket. My Morning Jacket’s de facto leader is vocalist/guitarist Jim James (birth name James Olliges; occasional pseudonym Yim Yames), who founded the band in 1998 alongside his cousin Johnny Quaid (guitar), Tom Blankenship (bass), and J. Glenn (drums). Headquartered in James’ hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, the group released its debut on Darla Records in 1999, with keyboardist Danny Cash joining the lineup one year later. Although The Tennessee Fire was only modestly popular in the U.S., it became a genuine hit overseas, particularly in the Netherlands. My Morning Jacket responded by launching a tour in Europe, where they were featured in a Dutch documentary film and received accolades from the Dutch music press. A Christmas EP was released in 2000, but it was My Morning Jacket’s follow-up effort — 2001’s At Dawn — that helped expand their audience at home. Jim James recorded his vocals in a grain silo, and the resulting reverb-heavy sound became a hallmark of the band’s early

My Morning Jacket maintained a grueling schedule throughout the early 2000s, hitting the road with such acts as Guided by Voices, Doves, and the Foo Fighters. They also made the jump to a major label (RCA/ATO Records) for the 2003 release of It Still Moves, one of their highest-praised albums yet. Quaid and Cash announced their departure in January 2004 (keyboardist Bo Koster and guitarist Carl Broemel joined in their place), and the group continued to tour as a unified fivepiece. Produced by John Leckie, 2005’s Z did away with the heavy reverb that blanketed the band’s earlier efforts, while the addition of synthesizers and reggae textures introduced audiences to My Morning Jacket’s experimental side. Tracks from Z also appeared on Okonokos, a live album released in 2006. Arriving in June 2008, Evil Urges showcased James’ expanding vocal range, his bandmates’ fascination with Prince, and My Morning Jacket’s eagerness to challenge the boundaries of alternative country-rock. After touring in support of the album, the bandmates spent several years pursuing their own projects, with Jim James joining the indie supergroup Monsters of Folk and Carl Broemel releasing a solo album. They reconvened for 2011’s Circuital, recording the album in a local church’s gymnasium and revisiting the quirky, eclectic sound that fueled their two previous albums. In the summer of 2013, My Morning Jacket hit the road as part of the Americanarama Festival of Music, a touring event in which they shared the bill with Bob Dylan and Wilco. In 2014, they booked time at Panoramic House Studios in Stinson Beach, California to begin work on a new album, aiming for a new spontaneity in their songwriting and embracing the mood of Northern California. The result, The Waterfall, was released in the spring of 2015. During the sessions, My Morning Jacket recorded enough material for two albums, but the leftover songs stayed in the vault until July 2020, when they debuted The Waterfall II in digital form, with CD and vinyl editions following in August. During the five-year gap between the two releases, My Morning Jacket was largely on hiatus, as Jim James and Carl Broemel released solo albums, Bo Koster toured as part of Roger Waters’ road band, and several members performed with Ray LaMontagne’s band. A run of four shows in 2019 inspired the band to record new music, and they booked studio time with James serving as engineer to avoid outside interference and influence. The resulting album, My Morning Jacket, was issued by ATO in October 2021.

Billy Strings Performs at The 713 Music Hall April 21st A Michigan native who’s lived in Nashville since 2015, Strings didn’t set out to become known as a singer, although he’s become recognized as one of acoustic music’s most expressive vocalists. His melodies are often breezy but there’s often a counterpoint within the lyrics, especially on songs like “The Fire on My Tongue.” “I never set out to be the best singer. My goal was just to master expressing myself through bluegrass music and so many of those players just sing how they talk. Then, when I grew up, I learned that I liked Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, and Led Zeppelin, so that influenced me, too. A song on this record like Red Daisy’ is totally a bluegrass song, but there’s also a song like ‘Leaders’ that I wrote with my buddy Steve Poltz. Who even knows how to define that one?” The musicianship throughout Renewal is outstanding, as Strings surrounds himself with touring bandmates Billy Failing (banjo, vocals, piano), Royal Masat (bass, vocals), and Jarrod Walker (mandolin, vocals, guitar), as well as guests John Mailander (violin), Spencer Cullum

Jr. (pedal steel) and Grant Millikem (synth). In addition to producing, Wilson plays percussion, celesta, and harpsichord. The instrumental tracks “Ice Bridges” and “Running the Route” especially show the camaraderie of the sessions. Strings grew up playing traditional bluegrass with his dad until he was introduced to a new generation of younger artists embracing acoustic music. That revelation led to his own willingness to branch out beyond bluegrass and his ability to pull in fans from every corner of the live music scene, which is evident through recent collaborations with everyone from Luke Combs to RMR, Del McCoury to Fences. Renewal is simply the next step in that creative evolution. “I listen to this album now and it’s emotional,” he says. “I could sit there and tweak it forever, but there’s a point where it’s like building a house of cards. Yeah, I could add an extra tower on top, but it might collapse. I’ve always doubted myself, and I still do, but this album makes me think, ‘Hey, you’re doing all right, kid. You just need to keep going.’”

Out now via Rounder Records, Renewal was produced by Jonathan Wilson and solidifies Strings’ position as a singular artist—one who honors the history of the music that inspires him, while continually pushing it forward. With the record’s sixteen tracks, Strings shares a more personal and honest perspective through his songwriting, while incorporating his wide range of influences with elements of bluegrass, classic rock, metal, psychedelic music and more. Released to widespread attention, Renewal landed on several “Best of 2021” lists including The Bitter Southerner, No Depression, Glide, The Boot, Folk Alley, Nashville’s WMOT Roots Radio and Pittsburgh’s WYEP Radio. It was also one of the Top 50 Most Played Albums at Americana Radio last year, while Strings was #1 on listener-voted year-end lists at Charlottesville’s WNRN and SpindaleAsheville’s WNCW among others.

side project, the Dirty Knobs. The initial lineup saw Campbell joined by Jason Sinay, who played in the group Five Easy Pieces as well as backing up Tift Merritt and Ivan Neville; Ron Blair, the original bassist in the Heartbreakers; and drummer Steve Ferrone, a successful session musician who had also worked with Petty. Though they didn’t record, the Dirty Knobs frequently played live when the Heartbreakers weren’t busy, usually in and around L.A. With the passage of time, Blair and Ferrone dropped out of the group and bassist Lance Morrison and drummer Matt Laug became their rhythm section.

Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs Perform at Warehouse Live On April 28th by Mark Deming After more than 20 years as lead guitarist with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Mike Campbell stepped out on his own with a side project, the Dirty Knobs, and waited almost another 20 years before recording their music and releasing it to the public. Playing raucous rock & roll with a ragged but right feel, the Dirty Knobs’ debut album, 2020’s Wreckless Abandon, saw Campbell and his bandmates beginning with the anthemic sound of his work with the Heartbreakers, and adding the influence of vintage ’60s and ’70s sounds (such as the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, and Led Zeppelin), as well as a touch of blues. Campbell moved his name above the Dirty Knobs in the billing for their second album, External Combustion, but the group continued to play rock & roll in the vein of the latter-day Heartbreakers. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, on February 1, 1950, Mike Campbell began playing guitar when he was 16 years old. In 1970, he joined the band 32

Mudcrutch with guitarist and singer Tom Petty and keyboard player Benmont Tench. The group were regionally popular in Florida and Georgia, and after relocating to California in 1974, they signed with Shelter Records. They released just one single for the label that failed to chart before they were dropped, and they broke up in 1975. Campbell had better luck when Petty formed a new group in 1976; he and Tench joined their old bandmate in Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, who after the release of 1979’s Damn the Torpedoes became one of the most popular rock bands in America. Campbell remained an integral part of the Heartbreakers until the death of Petty in 2017 brought their run to a close. During his periodic downtime from the Heartbreakers, Campbell often shared his talents as a guitarist and songwriter with a variety of well-respected artists, including Don Henley, Stevie Nicks, Randy Newman, John Prine, and Johnny Cash. In 2001, Campbell launched a new showcase for his music with a

After Petty’s death in 2017, Campbell made the Dirty Knobs his first priority, and they began blocking out plans for an album. Their first LP was completed in 2019, and after releasing the track “Wreckless Abandon” in January 2020, they planned to issue the set the following March, followed by a concert tour. However, Campbell was briefly sidelined by a health problem that led to a hospital stay, and the release of the album was postponed. The COVID-19 pandemic soon led to the cancellation of their live dates, and the group virtually assembled to record a new song, “Lockdown II,” that spoke with anger about the handling of the crisis; the track was issued in September 2020. The LP, Wreckless Abandon, was finally released in November of that year. Working again with co-producer George Drakoulias, the Dirty Knobs knocked out a second album in the course of three weeks during the summer of 2021. The resulting External Combustion broadened the musical reach of the Dirty Knobs, incorporating a greater reliance on overdubs and ’60s pop tricks, along with featuring cameos by Ian Hunter and Margo Price. When the record was released in March, 2022, Mike Campbell moved his name above his band’s on the credits, so External Combustion was officially credited to Mike Campbell & the Dirty Knobs.

John Mayer Brings His “Sob Rock” Tour To Toyota Center April 23rd 7-time GRAMMY® Award-winning artist, celebrated songwriter, and iconic guitar player, John Mayer brings his Sob Rock Tour 2022 to Toyota Center on April 23 with special guest Yebba. There’s nobody quite like John Mayer. He has emerged as a GRAMMY® Award-winning artist, celebrated songwriter, and iconic guitar player all at once. The Bridgeport, CT native introduced himself on the quintuple-platinum Room For Squares in 2001 and has earned three #1 debuts on the Billboard Top 200 with the triple-platinum Heavier Things [2003], double-platinum Battle Studies [2009], and gold Born and Raised [2012]. In addition to selling over 20 million albums worldwide and gathering billions of streams to date, he has garnered seven GRAMMY® Awards, including “Song of the Year” for “Daughters,” and has earned a record seven U.S. No. 1s on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart and 25 entries on the Hot Rock Songs chart, the most for any solo artist. In 2015, Dead & Company was founded, with Mayer on lead guitar as well as vocals. Since its formation, the band has completed six tours, playing to 3.4 million fans, and has become a recordbreaking stadium act. Most recently, 2017’s The Search for Everything bowed at #2 on the Billboard Top 200 and went gold. Sob Rock is the eighth studio album by John Mayer, released on July 16, 2021, by Columbia Records. The single “New Light”, released in May 2018, is included on the album, as are Mayer’s two singles from 2019, “I Guess I Just Feel Like” and “Carry Me Away”. The lead single “Last Train Home” was released on June 4, 2021, and features guest vocals from Maren Morris. Mayer has stated that this album was mostly born out of the COVID-19 pandemic, with most of the songs on the album resulting 34 Music News • April 2022

from the time after March 2020 when touring was shut down for many artists. Mayer’s goal was to work on a 10-track album that paid homage to the songs he heard in his childhood growing up in the 80s. Mayer said that the idea of this album was meant to “confuse the listeners” and “implant false memories.” He also stated in an interview with Zane Lowe that the record was meant to be a shitpost, trying to go against everything he had released up to that point. Mayer also decided that three of his previous singles were also going to be on the album when it released. These singles (“New Light”, “I Guess I Just Feel Like”, and “Carry Me Away”) had all been released in the time from mid-2018 to late 2019 and were not originally intended to be on an album. Initially, Mayer claimed that the album was to be released in mid-April 2021. However he later announced the delay of the record to July 16. It was recorded between late 2017 and early 2021. Mayer released “Last Train Home” as a single on June 4, 2021. Before that, clips of the track were released onto Mayer’s TikTok account in late March 2021. It was also announced that the album was to be released on physical formats, adding different vinyl and cassette editions. “No one is more aware of what people think about John Mayer than John Mayer himself,” Rolling Stone wrote in their Sob Rock review. “The title of his eighth studio album acknowledges past accusations of sadboy mopery. The muted pastels of the throwback cover art, complete with a simulation of the ‘Nice Price’ sticker that Columbia Records used to slap on its bargain LPs, dares you to call him a purveyor of slick, dated studio-rock.”

After making his introduction as a sensitive, acoustic-styled songwriter on 2001’s Room for Squares, John Mayer steadily widened his approach over the subsequent years, encompassing everything from blues-rock to adult contemporary in the process. As adept a guitarist as a singer, Mayer gained widespread attention, spiking his songcraft with jazz chords and literate turns of phrase. The combination proved to be quite popular, as Room for Squares went triple-platinum before its follow-up release, Heavier Things, arrived in 2003 at the top of the Billboard 200. Accolades followed, including Grammys for hits like “Your Body Is a Wonderland” and “Daughters.” He reached number two on the Billboard 200 with 2006’s Continuum, an album that earned him further Grammy Awards for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Mayer continued to transform his sound with each album, moving beyond the material that had launched his career and adopting elements of rock, blues, and soul. Moreover, he partnered with legends of several genres, making guest appearances on albums by Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, and B.B. King while touring with jazz icon Herbie Hancock. Mayer has retained enough of a pop/rock foundation to continue his reign of the charts, releasing more Top Five Billboard 200 albums, including 2009’s Battle Studies, 2012’s Born and Raised, and 2017’s The Search for Everything; all of which has made him one of the era’s most popular songwriters. In 2021, he further explored his love of classic ’80s production aesthetics with Sob Rock. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and raised in the nearby town of Fairfield, Mayer began playing blues as a teenager. By 1997, continued on page 36

song was included in a reissued version of Continuum, and it took home yet another Grammy Award (along with “Gravity”) in early 2009. Mayer returned to the studio in 2009 and emerged with Battle Studies, featuring the single “Heartbreak Warfare.” Building upon Continuum’s slick, adult contemporary sound, the album sold well. However, its release marked a tough period for Mayer’s public image, as he was criticized for comments he made about ex-girlfriends Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Aniston during interviews for Rolling Stone and Playboy. Subsequently, Mayer deleted his Twitter account and took some time off from appearing in public and doing interviews.

John Mayer Brings His “Sob Rock” Tour To Toyota Center April 23rd continued from previous page his skill on the electric guitar was enough to warrant admission into the Berklee College of Music, although Mayer dropped out after two semesters to pursue a songwriting career in Atlanta. Working alongside former classmate Clay Cook, he frequented the local coffeehouse circuit and began co-writing material that melded palatable pop/rock with unexpected flourishes. Cook and Mayer parted ways shortly thereafter, however, with Cook joining the Marshall Tucker Band’s touring lineup for several years. Now a solo artist by default, Mayer recorded several of the duo’s songs, packaged them alongside a handful of his own compositions, and self-released the EP in 1999 under the title Inside Wants Out. Mayer secured a deal with Aware Records in early 2000 and recording sessions for his debut album commenced later that year with producer John Alagia, renowned for his work with Dave Matthews and Ben Folds Five. Although Inside Wants Out had been a decidedly acoustic effort, Room for Squares proved to be a more expansive affair, with several of Mayer’s old songs receiving new, radio-ready arrangements. Released in 2001 by both Aware and Columbia Records, the album quickly launched Mayer’s career, with “No Such Thing” and “Your Body Is a Wonderland” both becoming Top 20 hits. As Mayer hit the road in support of the album, his considerable talent as a lead 26 Music News • April 36 October 2022 2020

guitarist (a skill that had been downplayed during Room for Squares) flourished, leading him to showcase several blues-influenced solos on his 2003 live album, Any Given Thursday. That same year, Mayer won his first Grammy Award for “Your Body Is a Wonderland.” He returned to the Grammy ceremony two years later, this time to accept a pair of awards for “Daughters,” a soulful ballad from his lucrative sophomore release, Heavier Things. Commercial and critical success notwithstanding, Mayer’s interest in other genres convinced him to take a brief break from pop music, and he tested his instrumental chops by collaborating with blues artists (Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Eric Clapton) and jazz legends (John Scofield, Herbie Hancock). He also assembled the John Mayer Trio, whose bluesy rock & roll was displayed on the band’s first and only release, Try! Mayer returned to his solo career with 2006’s Continuum, a warmly received album that saw him focusing on blues, pop, and contemporary soul. “Gravity” found modest success as a single, but “Waiting on the World to Change” proved to be the album’s commercial highlight, cracking the Top 20 in February 2007 and winning a Grammy that same month. Later that year, Mayer achieved his highest-charting single to date with “Say,” a song from the Rob Reiner film The Bucket List. After “Say” peaked at number 12, the

In 2011, while recording his fifth studio album, the Don Was-produced Born and Raised, Mayer revealed that he would be receiving treatment for granulomas found near his vocal cords. Following his surgery, Mayer completed the album and debuted the lead-off single, “Shadow Days.” A strippeddown affair, Born and Raised showcased a more rootsy, folk- and country-tinged sound than his previous efforts. Three months before the album’s release, a recurrence of Mayer’s granulomas forced him to cancel his subsequent planned tour and abstain from singing indefinitely while he received more treatment. Upon its release, Born and Raised became Mayer’s first album to spend more than two weeks at the number one spot on the Billboard 200 chart. In 2013, Mayer returned to the studio with Don Was to record Paradise Valley, his sixth album and one that would continue to explore the rootsy, folk style of Born and Raised. Mayer toured Paradise Valley into 2014. The next year, he was hired by Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann to fill the Jerry Garcia role in Dead & Company, the touring revue that followed the Grateful Dead’s Fare Thee Well shows of 2015. Dead & Company toured into 2016 and then Mayer finished his next album, The Search for Everything. An EP teaser of the album, The Search for Everything: Wave One, appeared in January 2017, and a second, Wave Two, arrived the following month. The full-length The Search for Everything appeared in April 2017. Mayer continued touring with Dead & Company but was sidelined in December when he had to undergo an emergency appendectomy; the group reconvened in 2018. In May of that year he issued the standalone single “New Light,” which he produced alongside No I.D. 2019 brought two more non-album singles, beginning with the mostly acoustic “I Guess I Just Feel Like,” followed in September by “Carry Me Away.” Early 2021 marked the arrival a handful of ’80spop-leaning singles including “Last Train Home” (with guest vocals by Maren Morris) and “New Light,” both of which appeared on the full-length Sob Rock later that year. The album again featured production by longtime Mayer associate Don Was.

The Biker, The Blues, & What Goes Around Comes Around This story is completely fictitious. There’s no place named Las Vegas, there’s no blues there, no loose women, no gambling, no single malt scotch, no cigars, no nothing - that’s my story and I am sticking to it. Finally, no animals were hurt during the creation of this marvelous piece of American fiction. Ok so I pulled out of Winslow Arizona and headed west on I-40 until I arrived at the junction of 93 North near Kingman. Destination: Lost Wages NV. I was tempted to drop down to Phoenix and go to Bob Corritore’s Rhythm Room which is always a cool place to go but the bright lights were drawing me like a moth to a flame. My friend Uli Geissendoerfer was performing at The Gambit in Henderson and the jazz great always presents great music and guests. Gotta take in what’s happening there, then down the road and on into Las Vegas. Some people don’t know it but Las Vegas is a hot bed of resident blues artists and it has some blues clubs that are as real as real can get. There is just something about being in a city that pops twenty four hours a day, it’s sort of like McDonald’s always being open when you are ready. I have a favorite no tell motel that I stay at because I can roll my scooter into the room on the first floor. After all a man has to have his priorities. So I arrived, got settled in and walked on down to the laundry room to run through a few clothes. While it was doing its thing I pulled a chair from inside the motel room out onto the walkway in front of the room. Time for a cigar and I had some time to burn of course, waiting on the laundry. It wasn’t too long afterward when I was sitting in the chair smoking away when a good looking gal carrying an ice bucket walked by. She smiled and asked if knew where the ice machine was, I didn’t but I did direct her to the laundry room, maybe it was there. Soon she passed by again this time with both hands holding on to the ice bucket, she said thanks and that was that. The evening was perfect, low humidity and dusk had been especially colorful as the sky moved from deep orange to beautiful shades of purple. Now here I was kicking back taking it all in. Don’t know why but the famous blues rock album Super Session came to mind and so I tapped my iTunes app and chose Fat Grey Cloud, perfect. No headphones just kept the volume low and kicked back. I needed to check on the laundry and sure enough it was time to move the wet items into the dryer. That’s when I ran into that gal again. She was coming into the laundry room with a handful of her own clothes. She asked me if I was going to the poker tournament and I told her I didn’t even know there was one. I told her I was just moving through and wanted to stop and take in some class blues acts while in town. She asked where and I told her a place named Saddle And Spurs over on Jones Road. I added, “if you win come by and buy me a drink”. She smiled and said she might well win and thanks for the offer. I finished my cigar, waited for the dryer to stop spinning and topped off the music with Santana’s Witchy Woman. The question in Vegas is always where do you want to eat? I mean a person can eat well in this town for very little money. Dinner buffets for $5.99 that include prime rib, ham, and every kind of side dish a person could ever want or you can pay $1.00 for a Heineken and footlong hot dog. Cheaper to eat out in Vegas then prepare at home. Got to love that… So I made my way to a place named Harleycontinued on next page

Page 2 - The Biker, The Blues, & What Goes Around Comes Around Davidson Café and chomped down on some barbeque and took in the scenery. I decided to make a full night out of it and called Uber to drop me at a place named The Sand Dollar Lounge. This place has a history of bringing top names to the stage and some really cool up and coming acts as well. Sax man Jimmy Carpenter performs here and this man is no slouch. His band lays it down and the groove is always 100% blues. Jimmy was the President of the Las Vegas Blues Society. He may still be but I am not sure. Here’s an insider’s hint for you - if you are going to Las Vegas and you like the blues always check out the Las Vegas Blues Society entertainment page to learn who is performing where while you are in town. Las Vegas is two towns. For about 95% of those that visit Las Vegas the strip and downtown are the faces of the community. If you live there however off the strip is just like any other town in America except maybe for the slot machines in the grocery stores and laundromats. Oh and the liquor filled candies manufactured at Ethyl M Chocolates. But anyway I digress. Back at the Sand Dollar the good looking gal behind the bar asks me what I would like and I order a single malt scotch. No music playing when I entered so I grabbed a five and made my way to the machine. Punched up some Little Feat, Allman Brothers, and B.B. King. That always makes the beer go down a bit better and sets the ambiance. The band was setting up, looked liked a three piece blues rock band and sure enough that was exactly what it turned out to be. Strong sound, some cool originals, and the place was filling up. The guy sitting on my right was asking everybody where they were from as he was from out of town and curious. Clean cut looking guy, polite enough, maybe a bit too inquisitive for his own good but harmless none the less. Out of nowhere he looks at me and says “I’m Bobby from Little Rock, I play bass in a band back home.” I asked if he would play tonight and he said no but he would like to play there. I told him about a place that encourages new folks arriving in Las Vegas to drop by and sit in. About then I heard the distinctive roar of a number of Harleys arriving and about eight people entered the bar. It was obvious this was not their first time there as they knew the wait staff and the bar maid by name. One of them went over and talked to two of the band members and came back to their table and sat down. The band began to tune up and the bar maid shut the music off. Then out of nowhere this gorgeous, sexy woman wearing an outfit that resembled Cat Woman’s clothes took to the stage. If she could sing half as good as she looked I was going to stay for quite some time. If I’m lying, I’m dying and she wasn’t just good this woman could deliver the blues brothers and sisters. She nailed down two songs and then as fast as she came out of nowhere she was gone in a flash. The band jumped right into their next song and the action never stopped all night and by the way the bars in Las Vegas are open 24/7 so all night means all night. The sun was coming up when I called the Uber dude and he took me back to the no tell motel without a hitch. I could see the maid’s cart on the sidewalk in front of a room and realized that I probably needed to stay awake until after she cleaned my room but I didn’t want that as my pride and joy was enjoying their carpet and I didn’t need her diming me out. So I approached her and asked her if she would not clean my room and gave her a five dollar bill. She smiled, nodded, and said something in Spanish. I went to the room and flopped onto the bed and instantly went to sleep. I woke up around four pm due to a young couple arguing outside in front of my window. They were darn near broke, both continued on next page April 2022 • Music News

Page 3 - The Biker, The Blues, & What Goes Around Comes Around accusing the other of gambling away too much of their money. You didn’t have to eaves drop I mean they were not exactly being quiet about their discomfort with each other. The man told her to chill out a bit as he was going to win it all back that night. Oh those are some famous last words spoken many times in Vegas I am sure. She was determined to put him in his place and commenced to denigrating his existence as a human being including commenting on the fragrance of the perfume on his clothes. The dude was busted…. I don’t know what happened outside I assumed he walked away because she remarked that it was just like him to turn tail and run. I don’t know why I was smiling, maybe because it wasn’t me on the receiving end. The songwriter Paul Thorn has a number of songs about the way love is, humorous in nature but many of them hit rather close to home for some of us. Well they are young, in Las Vegas with a pocket full of money, what could possibly go wrong for a young couple? Time to shower and shave and check out the bright lights and see who’s in town. One of the off the strip places that usually has something hot musically going on is Sam’s Town Casino on Boulder Highway and Tropicana. They’ve got a sports book, live music, great buffet, and the odds seem a bit better than up on the strip. Called the Uber folks and a nice lady arrived and drove me to Sam’s. As I walked by a $5 machine I put in a $20 in and won a thousand dollars. Nice way to start the day off. I made my way to the buffet and their food choices were above par and the service was timely but not pushy. It’s an interesting place as it attracts locals with its huge bowling alley underneath the casino and its music room choices. After filling up at the buffet I turned my attention toward their sports book to see what games they were posting for tomorrow morning. I could see some good odds on some of the games already and thought I would check back later. I made my way to a crap table where a lady was talking to the dice, shaking them like hell, and then telling them what to do. My kind of table action. I ordered change for a C-note and waited for the woman to either make point or lose her turn. She made point. I put $25 on the pass line and backed up the bet with another $25. She rolled a seven coming out and I had more than just doubled my money. I liked this place. Waitress came by and brought me a scotch at no charge, not bad tasting scotch whatever the name of it was - she didn’t know. Nice smile and timely service so I tipped her $10. I was having fun and then I really screwed up. Somehow I spilled that entire drink on the front of my pants. I was totally embarrassed and the pit boss called for a clean up crew. He then came over and whispered in my ear that I could go over to the gift shop and see what they had that might be suitable to me. That was a good idea and so I just walked away from the table not even taking my money or pulling my bet. The gift shop did in fact have some Levi’s and a pair that fit. I paid up, went to restroom and changed my pants. Then I remembered my money at the crap table and moved quickly to get to it. It was still there and my bet had still been in play. Looked like I gained about three times what I had bet before I left the table. I tipped the boys working the table $50 and scooped up my bet and the other money I had laying in the tray continued on next page

Page 4 - The Biker, The Blues, & What Goes Around Comes Around and walked away. Talk about an interesting day, well actually it was night time by now. I moved into the showroom where I had heard a young blues rocker making his bones on lead guitar. This young man was good and I mean good. No cover charge and plenty of places to sit. Now they have a game in Vegas named Keno, it’s a lot like bingo well sort of anyway. So at each table there is crayon, a Keno ticket, and you choose maybe six to twelve numbers. If all them come up you win. A lady wearing sheer black stockings and a really short mini-skirt comes by, picks up the ticket, and takes your entry fee. I bet $2.00. I chose six numbers and three of the six were called so I gained what is known as a push. In other words I got to do it over again at no charge. So I chose five numbers this time. This time I hit all five numbers and she brought me a winning slip for $1,100. Now get this - I entered the building bet $20 and won a thousand. I bet at the crap table and maybe made another $400 or so. Then I go into the showroom play keno and win $1,100. Obviously I tipped the gal in the sheer black nylons $100. I was having a really good evening. My instincts told me to leave now but I was weak and stopped at the roulette wheel on the way out of the casino. I cornered a $700 bet on number 26 and waited for the ball to land on a number. It did but not on one of the cornered numbers so I was out $700. I was still up but losing $700 was a bit sobering. As the saying goes, what goes around comes around and I was wondering if that just happened or it was a fluke? Only way to know that would be run the bet again, which I did not. Instead I went back to the sports book and placed my bet on a game for the next day. For some reason I bet the same amount here, $700. I decided to call Uber and leave. I didn’t know where I was going but I knew I wanted to take my tote bag with the wet pants back to the no tell motel. Now this is where it gets funny. I arrive without a problem and when I square up with Uber guy and get out of the car that same young couple is having another conversation outside in front of God and everybody. He’s telling her she doesn’t know how to gamble and she is telling him that he should not gamble after he starts to drink. I walked past them and the man asks me if I have a light, which I did, and stopped to make it happen. She asked me if I gambled and I said yes of course. She asked me if I had won that day and I said a little bit. She then began to tell me how the man she was with doubles down both when he wins and when he loses and she wants to know how that can work. I just shrugged my shoulders, smiled, and walked away. I unlocked the door and went inside dropping the tote bag on the small table by the window. I went into my stash of cigars and took out a nice maduro, grabbed the chair by the table and went outside. As I sat down I noticed a car with a male driver and three kids. Then I heard a door to my left close and it was the maid. She had been working since I saw her earlier until now. As she walked by I stopped her by holding my hand up like a crossing guard. I reached into my pocket and took out a $50 and gave it to her. She looked at me funny as if I had something bad in mind and while we couldn’t understand each other’s language I said this is for you and your family. She nodded and said gracious senor. The next morning I over slept and there was a sound on my door like a light rap and then the door opened up. It was the maid and she saw my bike. Her eyes got wide and began to back out of the room. I heard that same rap on the door next to mine. I got up and put on my new pants and the same shirt and went outside. When she came out to get things off her cart I pointed to my room and said ok. She nodded yes. She cleaned the room, made the bed, all while I smoked another stogie outside. You know it’s funny it was almost like she didn’t even see that bike at the foot of the bed. She just cleaned, smiled, and pushed her cart down a room. It was a good day on the road….. April 2022 • Music News 45

The Mavericks Bring Their “En Español” Tour To The Arena Theatre April 9 The Mavericks are bringing three decades of their unique rock and country sound infused with Latin flavors, to Houston’s Arena Theatre for the world tour celebrating of their first-ever, allSpanish album, “En Español.” They have enjoyed success and critical acclaim across genres with Top 40 hits such as “What a Crying Shame,” “There Goes My Heart,” and “O What a Thrill.” When the pandemic hit and stopped live performances, founder and lead singer/songwriter Raul Malo, who had grown up steeped in Latin music forms from his parents – both Cuban immigrants – as well as his father’s love of Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline and his mother’s of opera and classical music, used the down time to work on the Maverick’s first all-Spanish album.. “En Español” draws on the vast array of songs and styles across Latin cultured that influenced Malo to present a rich melting pot, including five original tracks by Malo. Being a Mavericks album, fans can expect the band’s unique blending of styles to draw it all together in an eclectic mix with their country/rock roots and spontaneous spirit. is bound to have its swings and cycles. The Mavericks, the eclectic rock and country group known for crisscrossing musical boundaries with abandon, has gone through three distinct phases since it was founded in Miami in 1989. An initial period of heady success marked by big hits and critical acclaim in the ‘90s. A long hiatus starting 2003 when the musicians each went their own way. And finally, a triumphant reunion in 2012 which held long enough for them to recently celebrate the band’s 30th anniversary. Now, The Mavericks are releasing a new album that ushers in the fourth phase of their evolution. “It’s like we’ve had three different lives,” says Raul Malo, the band’s lead singer and songwriter, “and now this is a whole new beginning. We’re sort of going into uncharted territory. I’m looking forward to it and I’m kind of nervous about it too. It’s certainly a new adventure.” On August 21, The Mavericks officially launch that adventure with the debut of their first-ever, all-Spanish album, released on the band’s own Mono Mundo label. Entitled simply En Español, it is produced by Malo and the

band’s long-time collaborator Niko Bolas (Neil Young, Prince, Sheryl Crow). The line-up includes Malo’s fellow Miamian and charter bandmember, Paul Deakin on drums and vibraphone, as well as veteran Jerry Dale McFadden, who joined in 1993. Eddie Perez, a Mexican American guitarist from Los Angeles, is the band’s youngest and newest member, becoming a Maverick in 2003. The band readily embraced the allLatin concept, as a team. “It’s a communal project in many ways,” says Malo, “even though I’m leading the charge.” Although all 12 tracks are in Spanish, as the title suggests, the collection represents a diversity of musical styles and cultural traditions, from tender boleros to brassy mariachi to reimagined Afro-Cuban classics. Seven of the tunes are familiar gems drawn from the vast Latin American songbook, while five are originals written or cowritten by Malo. For this show, The Mavericks are requiring that all attendees must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 OR have received a negative COVID-19 diagnostic test within 72-hours prior to event entry.

Road studios in London.

More than a million and a half music lovers experienced his previous Circo Soledad tour live and more than 3 million fans witnessed Hecho A La Antigua, the most watched streaming concert in the history of Ibero-American music.

“The term legendary is often overused in our business, but it seems inadequate when describing Ricardo Arjona. This true Renaissance man has transcended the borders of his native Guatemala to become the voice of the common man across the world”, said Nelson Albareda, CEO and founder of Loud And Live, the global entertainment and media company that is producing Arjona’s 2022 tour. “I am beyond proud to be spotlighting his talents in the Blanco y Negro tour next year across the United States”.

often poignant and always topical songwriting, which addresses subjects ranging from romance and sexuality to violence, racism, poverty, and the plight of immigrants. He possesses a crystalline, expressive baritone with a completely committed performing style, whether he’s in a studio or on-stage. Arjona is an artist first and an entertainer second, and he has pursued many directions over the course of his career. Early recordings, such as his 1992 synthdriven breakthrough, Animal Nocturno, communicated his sophisticated lyrics inside infectious melodies. 1994’s Historias showcased 14 songs in as many styles, ranging from rock and R&B to acoustic pop, folk, and even country. Ricardo Arjona continued from previous page ous Galeria Caribe, he has placed a dozen albums on the Latin and Latin Pop charts and ten more in the Anglocentric Top 200. Arjona made the transition to streaming charts, as well. Singles such as 2012’s “I Wanna Be Around,” in duet with Tony Bennett, placed inside the jazz Top 40, while 2017’s “Ella” made the streaming Top Ten. Blanco, recorded at London’s Abbey Road Studios, was released in 2020 and followed by the simultaneously recorded Negro in 2021; they were issued as Blanco y Negro. Born in Antigua, Arjona was interested in music from an early age but initially decided to become a rural schoolteacher. He also played basketball for the Guatemalan national team but continued to play guitar and write songs in his spare time. After realizing that music was his vocation, he emigrated to Mexico City; once there, he played many student music festivals and sought a recording contract. Arjona eventually secured a deal with PolyGram, but the label attempted to market him as a stereotypical Latin lover for his debut, Dejame Decir Que Te Amo. The album failed commercially and critically, and Arjona spent the next five years teaching and occasionally writing songs that were recorded by other artists. He moved to Buenos Aires next and began performing again. He returned to the recording sphere with material more suited to his experiences as a topical singer, namely with “Jesus Verbo No Sustantivo,” a controversial song about his experiences at a Catholic school as a child. It gained him another record contract, this time with Sony, the label that released many of his most popular albums, including 1992’s Animal Nocturno. His next two albums, 1994’s

Historias and 1996’s Si el Norte Fuera el Sur, were not only popular but critics’ favorites, as well. Galeria Caribe, which appeared in 2000, became Arjona’s first number one album on the Top Latin Albums chart, and 2002’s Santo Pecado won him a Latin Grammy Award. Adentro, released in late 2005, was a landmark in Arjona’s catalog; it marked the first of several contributions by Puerto Rican producer and songwriter Tommy Torres and won Arjona another Latin Grammy. 5to Piso followed in 2008, bolstered by Torres’ help, plus a massive hit single in “Como Duele.” Poquita Ropa arrived two years later, with Arjona adopting a more stripped-down approach. Released in 2011, Independiente featured a more pop-oriented sound and style that made the album a commercial and streaming success, with its lead single, “El Amor,” becoming a major hit. In what had become typical fashion, Arjona switched creative directions again for 2014’s Viaje, a singer/songwriter album through and through, driven by experiences of life on the road and clinical depression brought on by the death of his mother. Arjona’s next release was an acoustic collection of his favorite ballads, 2016’s Apague la Luz y Escuche, which rose to number one

on the Latin Pop Albums chart. His next set of original material, Circo Soledad, arrived in April of 2017. Arjona undertook a massive tour in support of the album. The Circo Soledad Tour began in Toluca, Mexico in May 2017 and concluded in November of 2018 in Guatemala; he played more than 115 concerts in 20 countries and 75 cities. It was among the highest-grossing tours for Latin artists over the period. In August of 2019, Arjona released a concert DVD and live album entitled Vivo Circo Soledad!, with an advance video single for “Historia de Taxi” appearing earlier that month. Arjona returned to the studio late that year and completed Blanco at Abbey Road Studios in London. It was released in July 2020 as the first of a two-part album. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he was unable to support it with a tour. In July of 2021, he issued the Grammy-nominated Hecho a la Antigua, documenting a live-streamed concert from his home country featuring more than 30 accompanying musicians from across the globe. It was watched by more than three million fans, resulting in the most viewed streaming concert in the history of Iberic-American music. In November he released Blanco’s companion album, Negro. They were recorded at Abbey Road simultaneously and released in the combined package Blanco y Negro. April 2022 • Music News

In January of 2013, Pesado released the single “Mi Primer Amor.” Written by Zapata, it was dedicated to mothers. The video proved especially popular. Rather than issue an album immediately, Pesado had other plans. The single “Cuando Estas de Buenas” dropped in August, followed by “Por Ti” in September. These proved to be precursors to the band’s celebration of its 20th anniversary at the Arena Monterrey. They also issued a pair of retrospective concert albums to mark that occasion: Directo 93-13, Vol. 1 & Vol. 2. The retrospective recordings featured guest appearances by Mariachi San Luis, Celso Piña, and Los Tigres del Norte’s Raul Hernandez.

Pesado Perform at The Arena Theatre May 7 by Jason Ankeny Originally known as Grupo Pesado, the norteño group Pesado was founded by frontman/accordionist Beto Zapata and Pepe Elizondo (bajo sexto, vocals) in 1993 in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. They debuted with the album Ayudame a Olvidar, released by MCM. Llego el Amor followed in 1994, soon achieving gold status. The following year, they scored a major hit with “Eso Me Gusta.” In 1997, original bass player Rodolfo Gajardo was replaced by Juan Antonio Pequeño. A new lineup change occurred in 1999 when ex-Grupo Límite drummer Luis Mario Garza took Mario Padilla’s place. By the time of their seventh LP, 1999’s A Tu Encuentro, Pesado had signed to the new WeaMEX imprint, which would issue a series of greatesthits albums for the group at the turn of the millennium. Todo Tuyo was issued in early 2001 and marked the first time Pesado entered the charts. Several more albums followed (as their discography continued selling to gold and platinum status) before Pesado issued 2006’s Piensame un Momento, which continued their streak and earned the group a Grammy nomination for Best Norteño Album. They struck again quickly with Gracias por Tu Amor, a controversial album that challenged physical abuse and the traditional notions of male machismo in Latin America. The album and its title track single were the subject 50 Music News • April 2022

of hot discussion on radio and television talk shows, but they only served to grow sales and airplay. Corridos: Defendiendo el Honor Pesado had another “thank you” on tap for 2008. As a celebration of their own 15th anniversary, they released Corridos: Defendiendo el Honor, a collection of classic corrido covers by artists such as Los Cadetes de Linares, Ramón Ayala, and Los Tigres del Norte. They followed it a few months later with a collection of new songs titled Sólo Contigo. A second corrido tribute date, Desde la Cantina, Vol. 1, was recorded at Pico’s Bar in Nuevo Leon and released in 2010. In rowdy fashion, it celebrated the historic songs of artists from the ’40s including Eliseo Robles, Lupe Tijerina de Los Cadetes de Linares, Don Cesareo Sánchez, and Los Cardenales de Nuevo León. In 2011, Pesado delivered the studio album Una Historia para Siempre. Its single, “Mientras Dormías,” referenced Zapata’s then-recent marriage. Its romantic theme played well to fans, pushing it up the charts. They followed with a tour, but re-entered the studio quickly. Mi Promesa was issued less than a year later. It included three charting singles in the title track, “Que Bonito Es el Amor,” and “Le Creí,” and it proved one of the most romantic albums in the band’s history.

Four pre-release singles were released in early 2015 and built up public demand: “Que Aún Te Amo” appeared in January while “Te Quiero, Te Adoro” and “Pude Olvidarte” hit the airwaves in March. The charts could hardly keep up. In April, the title track of Abrázame was issued as a fifth single on the same day as the album’s release. They had four tracks on the airplay charts simultaneously. The radio and video play the singles received kept the album in front of the public for the rest of the year. As their tradition dictated, Pesado followed its album of originals with another tribute; this one differed from the rest in that it was dedicated to the work of a single historic force in norteño music: Tributo a los Alegres de Terán was released by Disa in February of 2016 and peaked at number two on the Mexican Regional Albums chart. At the end of September, they issued the pre-release single “Me Estorbas”; it peaked at number seven on the Regional Mexican Airplay chart. In an interview, Zapata announced that the full-length Los Angeles Existen was set for a summer 2017 release, prefaced by its title track as a second pre-release single that peaked at 17 at Regional Mexican Airplay and spent 20 weeks on the chart. A label change to Remex Music and intense touring commitments delayed release. In October, “Yo No Tengo Remedio” was issued as a third single and reached number ten at Regional Mexican Airplay. Pesado and Remex finally issued Los Angeles Existen in April of 2018. In addition to its singles, it included ten more songs penned by Zapata, Elizondo, Elías Medina, and Felipe.

Marco Antonio Solis is back on the road again. bringing his 2022 tour Que Ganas de Verte (What Desire to See You) tour to The Smart Financial Center on April 22. The Latin Grammy-winning artist will kick off the U.S. leg of his trek on April 1 in Phoenix. Marco will then touch down in in eight cities including Orlando and Houston, before finishing with a Mother’s Day celebration on May 7 at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont. On his Que Ganas de Verte (What Desire to See You) tour, Solis, who has 51 titles on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart — 11 of those No. 1 hits — will be performing his classic pieces as well as some new songs as well. The Que Ganas de Verte tour follows the Los Bukis (helmed by Solis) historic nine-date stadium tour, where the group reunited for the first time in 25 years. The reunion tour was the biggest Latin tour of 2021. Marco Antonio Solís is without question one of the most important figures in the rise of Mexican and Latin music to world prominence during the last two decades of the 20th century. Born in Michoacan, Mexico, Solís was only 12 when he formed his first group, Los Hermanitos Solís, with brother Joel. He was still a teenager when he formed Los Bukis in the early ’70s. Over the course of the next two decades, Los Bukis came to profoundly influence the norteño and tejano music of Mexico and the southwestern United States. Though Solís continued to work closely with Los Bukis, he also initiated a solo career that resulted in platinum certifications for mid-’90s LPs such as Quiereme, Inalcanzable, and Por Amor a Mi Pueblo. Trozos de Mi Alma followed in 1999. Solís ushered in the new millennium with a two-volume live set, En Vivo, and its companion, En Vivo, Vol. 2. His next studio album, Mas de Mi Alma, was released in 2001 and, like his previous solo albums, became a best-seller. Even though he didn’t release another proper album until 2003, Solís remained a chart favorite with several songs from Mas de Mi Alma (including “Cuando Te Acuerdes de Mi” and “Si No Te Hubieras Ido”) making appearances on Billboard’s Latin charts. Released in May of 2003, Tu Amor o Tu Desprecio slowly made its way to the top of the charts until reaching number one in early 2004. The best-of collection La Historia Continúa... appeared by the end of 2003, followed the next spring by the split

Marco Antonio Solis Performs At Smart Financial Centre April 22 album (alongside Joan Sebastían) Dos Grandes. Razon de Sobra was also released by the year’s end. The second part to his La Historia Continúa... was issued in 2005, as was a release with tejano singer Pepe Aguilar. The wellreceived Trozos de Mi Alma, Vol. 2 hit shelves in 2006; it quickly topped the Latin album charts, produced a hit in “Antes de Que Te Vayas,” and earned Solís a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Album. The artist issued the live Noche en Madrid in June of 2008, followed a scant five months later by his eighth studio offering, No Molestar. Both albums hit the top spot on the Latin albums chart. After a short break, Solis was back in the studio. En Total Plenitud was released in 2010 and became his tenth consecutive record to hit number one on the Latin albums chart, setting a record. Its single “A Dónde Vamos a Parar” was featured in the telenovela Theresa, and the album reached platinum status in sales. Solis toured globally in support of the album for over a year. Upon the tour’s conclusion, he returned to recording almost immediately. The single and video for “Tres Semanas” were released in the summer of 2013, followed by a second pre-release single and video for “De Mil Amores” in early 2014.

The studio album Gracias por Estar Aquí appeared in April 2014, and was nominated for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album at that year’s Latin Grammy Awards, with “De Mil Amores” winning the award for Best Regional Song. The recording was also nominated for Best Latin Pop Album at the 57th Grammy Awards show. It was also his last album for a Universal affiliate label. Solis then went indie, and his deluxe live project, Por Amor a Morelia Michoacan, was titled for the city of his birth. Recorded in 2012 as an audio and video disc package, it was prefaced by the medley single “Mi Mayor Necesidad”/”A Donde Vayas” in March 2015, while the album appeared in various packages in April of that year. Solís provided the Spanishdubbing of Ernesto de la Cruz, the main antagonist of the 2017 Disney-Pixar film Coco. Solís returned to Billboard’s Regional Mexican Airplay chart for the first time in over two decades as “Se Veía Venir” climbed to No. 1 on the ranking dated October 2, 2021.

The album (which reached the #1 spot in Mexico) has been certified doubleplatinum and won two awards at the Premios Oye! 2006 (Mexico’s most important music awards), including Best Album of the Year and Pop Vocal Female. She was also nominated for two Latin Grammy Awards for Best Rock Vocal Album Indeleble and Best Rock Song for “Volverte a amar”. In 2007 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. In 1990, Guzmán scored one of the biggest hits of her career, the song “Eternamente Bella” (“Eternally Beautiful”), which became a number one hit in Mexico and other Latin countries. The song is considered a classic by many Spanish rock fans. In 1991 she released Flor de Papel. One of the album singles, “Hacer El Amor Con Otro”, became a smash hit for Guzmán, not only in Latin America and México, but also in the U.S. The album was well received by critics and fans, and received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Latin Pop Album in 1992. The albums Libre and Enorme followed in 1993 and 1994, respectively. Her musical output in the late 1990s was often overshadowed by the many controversies she was involved in. That same year, after undergoing a cosmetic procedure, Guzmán fell gravely ill. The surgeon had injected her with an infected implant. He was prosecuted but Guzmán intervened on his behalf and he was acquitted. In 2010, she and singer Ricky Martin openly discussed a romantic relationship they shared in 1992. Shortly thereafter, she joined the television program Mira Quién Baila as a panel judge. This was short-

She toured to support the recording for nearly two years. She released the single “Mi Peor Error,” a new song for the best-selling, more intimate live album Primera Fila. She also joined the cast of La Voz Mexico as a coach. In June of 2015, La Guzmán surprised fans with the pre-release single of “Adios,” a reggaeton collaboration with Puerto Rican singer Farruko. It failed to chart. A second single, “Qué Ironía,” — whose video was shot in Iceland — fared better. In September of 2015, back with Sony, she released A + No Poder, her first studio album in six years. Guzmán cowrote its songs and co-produced the record with José Luis Pagán. Other than the urban single “Adios,” its balance of material marked a return to the rock & roll and power ballads that established her reputation. While a singles collection marked the following year, Guzman was thinking big, touring hard and planning a career defining event. In 2017, Guzman and sister Latin rock legend Gloria Trevi teamed for the collaborative album Versus, issued by Sebastian Krys’ Rebeleon Entertainment label. Her passion for her craft and her creative spark remain intact in this expansive return that promises as many surprises as it does satisfaction. Few Latin pop stars have shone as brightly – and for as long – as Paulina Rubio. The Mexican artist has an incomparable journey of professional milestones and global successes. Since then, her popularity has grown steadily both in North America and Latin America, definitely exploding at the turn of the millennium after her signing by Universal Music. Paulina involved three dozen composers, producers and arrangers, broadening her artistic vision and creating a list of incontestable singles –“Te quise tanto”, “Algo tú” and “Give me another tequila”– that reigned on the Latin Billboard charts and cemented her stardom. From there, she continued to move up the creativity board to publish Ananda in 2006. Increasingly involved in the composition and elaboration of her works, the queen of Latin pop returned in 2009 with Gran City Pop, an unprejudiced and danceable album that included hits like “Causa y effect” and “Neither roses nor toys”. ”. The album expanded the stylistic palette of the Mexican woman, combining elements of genres such as ranchera, hiphop, Eurodisco or eighties British pop. It returned to reap great sales success in countries such as Spain, Mexico and Puerto Rico, reigning at the top of the US Latin chart in mid-2009. With Brave! (2011) Paulina Rubio opted for a skilful combination of songs in English and Spanish. The album’s artistic roster included long-time hitmakers like RedOne, pop stars like Taboo of The Black

Eyed Peas, and flashy Mexican songwriters like Espinoza Paz. Marked by her first motherhood, but also by the death of her father, Brava! explores the maturity of an artist determined to celebrate the cycle of life. The album expanded Rubio’s overwhelming range of hits thanks to songs like “Me gustas tanto” –composed half with Nacho, by the Venezuelan duo Chino y Nacho– or the vibrant dance proposals of “Heat of the Night” and “All Around the World”. In 2013, the compilation Pau Factor hit stores, a nod to her participation as a jury in the talent show The X Factor.
