Meet Your 2019 TAA Champions!

MORGAN HOPSON, CAI, UCMA STATE CHAMPION Morgan is a native of Bonham, Texas and a graduate of Texas Christian University. She is a licensed auctioneer, a graduate of Texas Auction Academy and the Professional Ringman’s Institute. Morgan is also a licensed real estate associate in Texas and Oklahoma and has experience with many types of auctions. Her specialties include farm & ranch, recreational, and luxury real estate as well as consulting with non-profits and associations to help them achieve their fundraising goals.

Morgan holds the prestigious Certified Auctioneers Institute (CAI) from the National Auctioneers Association’s Education Institute. In 2015, Morgan was awarded with the Pat Massart Award at the Certified Auctioneers Institute in Bloomington, IA. The Pat Massart award is given to the student with the best auction proposal submitted in year two of the three-year designation program. Morgan has also been awarded with the United Country Master Auctioneer designation and

most recently received 1st runner up in the International Auctioneers Championship. Morgan is currently serving as a state Ambassador for the National Auctioneers Association. She is a member of the Texas Auctioneers Association. Outside of the real estate auction industry, Morgan is an active member of the Junior League and is currently serving as the Co-Chair of the Speaker in the City Committee.

Having a strong and professional stage presence is something that Morgan is accustomed to, having performed as a concert violinist and fiddler at many prestigious events nationwide. She is honored to be the Texas Champion State Auctioneer for 2019 and looks forward to representing the state and bringing high-energy and charisma to any auction and will help surpass her client’s and your goals.

Scott is a second-generation auctioneer and ringman. He has been involved in the auction industry for over 40 years and has been a licensed auctioneer since January of 2013. PRESIDENT UPDATE Joel Lemley, CES, CAGA TAA 2019-2020 President Every year after convention I always reflect how great an event this was, and I always wonder how you could ever make next year’s even better.

This is the goal of your Board of Directors as we begin the work of making your next convention a memorable one, and maybe the best one ever.

I want to congratulate our new Champions and invite them to be a part of our ambassadorship that represents our association and our industry. When it is all said and done all participants who competed are winners, showing courage, confidence, and talent that represents themselves and their craft.

I do want to talk to you about your Board and the commitment they make on representing the Association and our industry. The sacrifice they make on attending meetings, working on projects, being away from family and work are to ensure that your Association is among the best in the country. I have attended the National Leadership Summit and visited with other state Associations and I can assure you the Texas Auctioneer Association ranks high in organization, preparation, participation, and education for its members. It makes me proud to serve alongside some of the most talented and hardworking people in the auction business today.

I also want to thank Krista Richter for her hard work and commitment to your Association as Executive Director.

I could not begin to tell you how important her role is and the work she does in her position to serve your Association. Be sure to “Thank” these people who serve the Texas

Auctioneer Association, it really means a great deal to them to be able to hear that from the members.

I have set some goals for this upcoming year that I believe will improve and protect your Association for years to come. We will initiate more education on the fiduciary responsibilities of your board, its officers and staff. We are also creating a committee to be prepared for any situation that could occur from decisions made by our State Government, our banking institutions, and our obligations to the members of the Texas Auctioneers Association.

Things change and we, as your elected board, need to be prepared to adjust and keep our features and goals intact.

Your board was elected by you to lead, and make just decisions that are for the benefit of the Association and its members. The Staff is hired to put these decisions into action. The Members obligation is to support these actions and to continue supporting the Association and the auction industry.

This is what makes the Texas Auctioneers Association so important in our industry today.

The board is also working hard to improve the education offerings that are in the best interest of Auctioneers all over Texas. The TCAP program is preparing for the third year of auction education. Participant who have completed this program will be continued on page 25

WE SAW GOD TODAY! By: Patti & Brett Thomas On February 10th of this year our son Ashley was in a house fire and was burned severely. He has been in the Burn Unit at Parkland ever since. My wife Patti has been with him nearly every day since the accident trying to be there even though he was in an induced coma for many weeks. I watched her put her life on hold at being a wife, mother to her other kids as well as a grandmother, But she goes where she is needed the most and she is where she needs to be. Mother’s tend to be that way. My Mother is 90 years old and she still dotes over me as if I was still 8 and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Two weeks after Ashley’s tragedy, our daughter’s oldest little girl, Livvie, who just turned 5, was diagnosed with

Type 1 Diabetes. Another kick to the gut, but the one thing that has gotten us through this roller coaster ride is God Almighty. Not only has our faith given us hope in knowing that everything is in His hands and not ours, but He has used others to continuously prop us up. I have never in my life seen a following like Patti has on Facebook in regards to Ashley and his daily ups and downs. None of our family can go anywhere that people are not asking how we as a family are doing. The amount of folks that have reached out to us both verbally and financially has been nothing short of miraculous.

I, like nearly all auctioneers, have been on the giving end of the spectrum ever since I got out of Ft. Smith Auction School in 1976. We all want to help folks and who can help raise money better than an auctioneer? I cannot count how many functions I have helped with for over 40+ years, but I never intended to be on the other end of things and I struggle with that. I tell people that I’m not comfortable with them helping us and they immediately say, “Don’t deny us this blessing in helping y’all, it’s your turn”.

I have become very emotional about things these days, not only because my family is hurting, but in seeing the acts of kindness being expressed towards us. It has inspired me to try every day to help others in some way or another.

With all this being said, I witnessed a plan of action being

put into motion by a friend that I don’t deserve. I will never know how it all came together or what was said to get the ball rolling, but the results of his willingness to step up to help someone that was hurting will be a treasured memory that I shall carry with me for the rest of my days.

He asked for help and he got it. He presented a plan and it was implemented. He spoke on our behalf and our Auctioneer Family responded, not in a small way, but in an UNBELIEVALBE way.

Patti and I were able to drive down to the Convention being held in Waco on Saturday to visit and say hello to everybody we could and then we went back to Patti’s apartment in Dallas and we got online to watch the Contest Finals.

Of course, we would have rather been there than where we were, but it just didn’t feel right. What we witnessed online when Troy Robinett and Wes Pool initiated the Last Hero Standing Fundraising Process was nothing short of a miracle. We could not believe what was happening before our eyes. We were crying and just absolutely overwhelmed at an unbelievable act of kindness unlike anything we had either experienced. When Wes would call out people’s names and what they were giving, I couldn’t believe it. I told Patti, I never dreamed that so many people cared that much about us. But it wasn’t over. Then Wendy Lambert steps up to the microphone and announces that Tina & Greg Clifton wish to present us with a gift in memory of their beautiful son, Chance. Oh my God! We are so unworthy, but being blessed beyond our imagination.

Troy said, this act wasn’t about the money, but about the heart and he prayed for us all.

Regardless of what I think happened, I know one thing, and that is that We Saw God Today!

What’s next? How in the world do we pay these people back for what they did for us? Well, we move forward, we help other people in need, we don’t forget what these people did for us and help them when the opportunity presents itself and we keep our eye on Jesus. He provided this opportunity and our purpose should be to honor Him by helping others.

TAA SCHOLARSHIPS two offered, two awarded By: Joel Lemey, CES, CAGA, TAA President ONE OF THE WONDERFUL BENEFITS of being a member of the Texas Auctioneers Association is the offering of scholarships to deserving people. The TAA offers two kinds of scholarships, Scholastic and Endowment. The Texas Auctioneers Association Scholastic Scholarship is awarded to students whose parents or grandparents are members of the TAA in good standing. The award is based on many merits with grade point and school participation being a major prerequisite. Also required are community and personal interests that impact the lives of others. We hope that this Scholarship sends the right message in the student’s life to excel not only in education but their pursuit for success. This year’s recipient we feel meets that criteria and we are so proud to announce our winner.

Her goals are to become a licensed Texas auctioneer and a real estate agent. She is inspired by the auctioneers she has met and by their level of confidence, passion and dedication and decided that she would pursue the same path.

Congratulations Kindle Catching of Howe, Texas. Kindle Catching is the daughter of TAA member, Clint Catching of Catching Brothers Auctioneers, LLC in Sherman, TX. Kindle will graduate from Howe High School where she served as student body president, Class President, FFA President, National Honor Society Treasurer and drum major for the school marching band. She also has mentored many younger kids in the area for FFA and showmanship, in addition to helping work in the family auction business. She will attend Texas Tech University this Fall and plans to pursue a major in Animal Sciences and Pre-Law. She has interests in livestock nutrition and agricultural law and hopes to make a difference in the agriculture industry which she sees as the backbone of our nation.

CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE: AGRICULTURE FEEDS THE WORLD Alvin Kaddatz WHEN A REPORTER was doing interviews on the street, the question was asked, where does your food come from?

The answer was “Safeway”. (Safeway is a grocery chain that used to be in Texas) U.S. Farmers & ranchers feed not only our nation, but many around the world.

Because of low commodity prices, we are faced with record foreclosures & bankrupcies. People must eat, yet agriculture subsidizes consumers with food prices that are below the cost of production.

We finished planting cotton in May. The cost of the seed was $80.00 per acre. The chemical to control cotton root rot cost $744.00 per gallon.

One of our costumers spent $90,000.00 on his cottonseed with no guarantee of a crop.

In First Timothy 6 vs 6 to 8, scripture states: “6. But godliness with contentment is great gain.

7. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

8. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.”

It was great to see everyone at the TAA Convention.

Brett & Patti Thomas stopped by to visit & to update us on their son, Ashley Harbour.

On the morning of February 10th Ashley Harbour was in a house fire that destroyed his home and 47%

of his body has deep tissue burns, everything from his waist up.

He has had 6 surgeries and has been in the hospital for over 16 weeks.

Ashley has a long way to go with more surgeries and physical therapy.

A benefit was held for Ashley: Thomas and Harbour Benefit Dinner and Auction June 29th - 6:00 pm Priefert Sales Hangar, Mt. At the Saturday Night Banquet at the TAA Convention, a large sum of money was raised for Ashley.

TAA Auctioneers Complete CAI Designation By: Doug Bradford, CAI, TAA Director In March, Texas auctioneers Heather Kaspar, Walt Cade, and Doug Bradford completed the National Auctioneers Association’s Certified Auctioneers Institute (CAI) designation.

The CAI designation is a professional designation awarded to practicing auctioneers who meet the experiential, educational and ethical standards set by the NAA Education Institute. In order to be granted the CAI designation, auctioneer scholars must have been practicing auctioneers for at least two year (prior to attending the institute), attend all three years of CAI with more than 120 classroom hours, complete all special projects and complete 24 hours of continuing education every three years.

In year three, students present their plans in front of their peers and a panel of experienced CAI auctioneers and judges. These judges ask questions and offer advice on the positives and negatives of each business plan. Students have five minutes to present their plans so they must be precise and succinct in their presentations. Year three also includes topics on growing our auction businesses and providing additional tools and tips to think about in the future that will make us more valuable to our clients, as well as, being more efficient and streamlined business owners.

I always say that this industry is so unique because your peers and competitors are constantly rooting for you, lifting you up, and taking you under their wing. Texas Auctioneers AWARDED NAA SCHOLARSHIPS TWO TEXAS AUCTIONEERS were awarded scholarships by the National Auctioneers Foundation for the upcoming National Auctioneers Association’s Conference and Show to be held in New Orleans, Louisiana.

David Drake of Trinity Auction Gallery in Trinity, TX was awarded a scholarship for a full conference registration. A longtime TAA member, David, and his wife Elizabeth, are both CAI graduates and longtime NAA members as well.

I’M SITTING IN MY OFFICE on a beautiful sunny spring day thinking about how gorgeous it is and I hear music next door in the Boardroom. I almost get up to find out what it is and then I remember – we have people from all over Kansas City in the Boardroom judging the 950 entries we received for the USA Today Marketing Competition!

All of the judges have marketing in their jobs – either working for a marketing agency or an association or company in a marketing role. I had lunch with them today and asked what they had learned about the auction industry and about marketing during their work.

To a “t,” they all talked about the detail that was included and about how important the entries were. We talked about what their perceptions had been (that all auctioneers did was “talk fast”) to what the reality is – that auction professionals are experts not just in calling bids, but also in marketing their assets to the general public.

If an auction professional is really successful, it’s generally because their marketing is sophisticated, using an integrated blend of marketing styles that best represents the asset they are

selling to a targeted audience. In my mind, these competitions – the marketing contests held by your state and national associations, are by far the most important competitions that exist.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love a good bid calling contest – it’s fun and exciting and something that most people in this industry love – and frankly, the public loves it as well! But what is really important is getting the seller to the table and the bidders to the auction! The only way to accomplish that is through effective marketing. I think most people in our industry know

The (TCAP) courses were offered on Thursday, June 6, 2019 prior to the TAA Conference. The Business Fundamentals Intensive Course 1 was offered for its second year. tion. As a first timer attending the conference I’m not sure what expectations I had going into it but I can tell you future conventions will have a lot to live up to.

The event itself was easy to navigate as far as being able to pin point which events I wanted to attend. The staff was always helpful, professional, and efficient. The instructors the TAA picked were perfect. They were a wealth of useful information.”

TAA Director AT THIS YEAR’S Texas Auctioneers Association Convention, over thirty first timers attended. This is one of the largest groups of first timers in recent history. Some of the first timers were fresh from auction school within the last twelve months, while others had been auctioneers for many years, but had never attended the TAA convention.

When first timers register for convention, they are asked to note on their registration if they are a first timer. If they note that, they receive a ribbon to attach to their convention badge that identifies them as a first timer allowing other auctioneers and attendees to welcome them and assist them as needed.

One of the ways to welcome a first timer is at the first timer’s breakfast held on the first day of the convention. The breakfast is organized and sponsored by the Hall of Fame members. The breakfast gives first timers the opportunity to network with other first timers and hall of fame auctioneers. They are able to discuss their experiences in the auction industry.

The board of directors typically attends the breakfast as well to encourage the first timers and serve as an additional source of information and support.

The first time at the convention can sometimes be a little scary or confusing if you are brand new or simply don’t know that many people or have anyone to hang out with. But for some, that feeling doesn’t last long.

TAA asked first timers to share their thoughts about attending their first TAA convention and here is what they shared with us.

Leslie Vann of Decatur shared this: “As an individual new to the auctioneer business, I gained a tremendous amount

of knowledge about the industry. I participated in the course #1 of TCAP and the information provided was very beneficial. More importantly, I had the opportunity to network with veteran professionals and learn from their experiences.”

Coy and Virginia Sevier of Waxahachie have been auctioneers for quite some time, but convention always conflicted with another business interest they were involved in. This year, the dates aligned and they were able to make it.“Wonderful learning and networking experience all around. Great to put a name to a face of many folks I had heard about, and the competition was outstanding. Everyone was so helpful, encouraging, and welcoming. We’ll be back!”

Perhaps Rebecca summed up best in what we hope everyone realizes about the TAA “The best part of the convention are the people. I am still blown away by the generosity of the members. They were all so quick to smile and share their knowledge and offer any assistance in the future.”

While not everyone had the same experience as these folks, they did offer ways that they think they we can improve the experience for future first timers. We are always looking at ways to improve the experience not only for first timers, but for all attendees. Many times we are limited by the time we have at the convention and the expense involved implementing some of the suggestions.

MEMORIES IN A FLASH

By: Montie Davis, PRI TAA Secretary/Treasurer EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE our family will pop some popcorn, pull out our family photo albums, and reminisce about the many memories we have made. Our TAA photo albums are special memories of our Texas Auctioneers Association family.

It was brought to the board’s attention that several of the albums are aging.

They agreed that it is important to protect these photographs, so two photo album scanners were

purchased. The Hall of Fame has taken on the project of preserving the TAA photo albums by saving them digitally. At last year’s convention we asked for volunteers to begin the scanning process and a special thank you goes out to Sharon Gathright and Dena Davis for scanning the albums from 1960 through 1990 onto flash drives. Thanks in advance to Ross Bandy and Erica Black for agreeing to scan the 1991 through 1995 albums this year. He conducts benefit auctions in Southeast Texas and the Houston area and serves as a ringman for benefits, auto auctions, and other sales. Scott and his wife Karen make their home in Silsbee, TX. They have three grown sons and three grandchildren.

LANDON WADDLE ROOKIE CHAMPION Landon is a second generation auctioneer. Having grown up around it, he’s always had a deep rooted passion for the industry. He attended auction school under Mike Jones at Texas Auction Academy back in 2013.

From there he began working a circuit of automobile auctions primarily in the Austin and Dallas markets. He has been privileged to work for and with a variety of auction companies, including those that sell heavy equipment, real estate, collector cars, and also benefit auctions. He became a licensed auctioneer in Texas in 2017.

This past May at the World Automobile auctioneers competition he won first place as a ring man. Along with a fifth place finish in the team contest along side Wayne Wheat. He’s truly grateful to be a member of the Texas Auctioneers Association and honored to be this years Rookie Champion Auctioneer.

Whether it’s talking over lunch, hanging out after class, or gathering at some little place called Nick’s at the end of the day, you learn from some of the best in the business and you lift up each other because you truly want each of your CAI peers to succeed. As this class was fond of saying, iron sharpens iron.

What are your final thoughts on the CAI experience?

Was it worth it?

For Heather, there is no doubt. “I made the best financial investment I have made on myself to date.”
