KICKING THINGS OFF • Texas State is in its 118th season of football. The Bobcats played their first game in 1904 and begin this season with an all-time record of 537-473-33. Texas State has won two NCAA Division II national championships and 14 conference championships during its history.

150TH-YEAR ANNIVERSARY • College Football is celebrating its 150-year anniversary in 2019. The Bobcats will wear a CFB150 patch on their uniforms.

TEXAS STATE IN HOME OPENERS • Texas State’s 2019 home opener against Wyoming marks the first time in school history that the Bobcats will play their first home game against a member of the Mountain West Conference.

LARGEST CROWD • Texas State played in front of the largest audience in school history when a crowd of 98,016 watched the Bobcats play at No. 11/12 Texas A&M. The previous record was 80,917 on Sept. 5, 2015 at No. 10 Florida State,.

YOUTH BE SERVED • Texas State’s Jake Spavital enters the 2019 season as the second-youngest head coach in the nation. Only Kent State head coach Sean Lewis is younger than Coach Spavital.

ALL IN THE FAMILY • Texas State’s head coach Jake Spavital and defensive coordinator Zac Spavital are one of 10 sets of brothers coaching at FBS schools in 2019. They come from a coaching family as their father, Steve, was a high school coach in Tulsa and Broken Arrow, Okla. Jake and Zac Spavital also coached together at Houston in 2009 when Jake was a graduate assistant and Zac was a cornerbacks coach. Below is a chart of brothers coaching at the same FBS school.

ONE OF SEVEN NEW HEAD COACHES • Texas State’s Jake Spavital is one of seven first-year head coaches making their head coaching debut at FBS schools in 2019. The other six coaches are Eli Drinkwitz at Appalachian State, Chip Lindsey at Troy, Thomas Hammock at Northern Illinois, Scott Loeffler at Bowling Green, Tyson Helton at Western Kentucky and Walt Bell of UMass.

SPAVITAL COMES FROM IMPRESSIVE LINEAGE • Texas State head coach Jake Spavital served as an assistant coach under Gus Malzahn, Kevin Sumlin, Dana Holgorsen and Sonny Dykes.

• While he was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Texas A&M, Jake Spavital coached Heisman Trophy winners Johnny Manziel and Kyler Murray. In addition, Coach Spavital coached other NFL quarterbacks Case Keenum at Houston, Brandon Weeden at Oklahoma State, Geno Smith and Will Grier at West Virginia, Kyle Allen at Texas A&M, and Davis Webb at California.

GAMEDAY NOTES AND STATISTICS CREATIVE OFFENSIVE MIND • One of the most creative minds in college football, Bob Stitt is the offensive coordinator after serving as an offensive analyst at Oklahoma State in 2018. Stitt is a former head coach at Montana (three seasons) and Colorado School of the Mines (14 years). He also was an offensive coordinator at Doane, Austin College and Harvard before being named the head coach in Colorado.

DEGREE IN HAND • Texas State has eight players on its 2019 roster who have earned their bachelor’s degrees. The graduates are senior linebackers Bryan London II (management), Nikolas Daniels (finance), Frankie Griffin (criminal justice) and Malik Alley (political science); senior defensive end Ishmael Davis (management); senior offensive tackle Jacob Rowland (construction science and management) and senior running back Anthony D. Taylor (communications studies). Joshua Rowland is also a graduate transfer from Texas, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in corporate communications.

VETERAN ROSTER • Texas State has the nation’s second-most experienced roster in 2019 according to Phil Steele. The Bobcats have 11 senior starters, and nearly 81 percent of their 2018 lettermen returning from last season. Texas State opened with 120 career starts on offense and 196 career starts on defense. The Bobcats return 61 percent of its offensive yards and 94.7 percent of its tackles from last season.

FIRST TIME STARTERS AT TEXAS A&M • Texas State had five players make their first collegiate start at Texas A&M on Aug. 29. The players included offensive linemen Tanner King and Eddie Rivas, tight end Hunter Hebert and wide receiver Hutch White on offense. One thing that can be said about senior linebacker Bryan London II is that he has thrived throughout constant change in his life.

London II has played for five defensive coordinators and three head coaches in his collegiate career. Even with the changes, he has an opportunity to set a school record for most career tackles and most career solo tackles. He enters tonight’s game against Wyoming with 345 total tackles and 188 solo stops in his career.

After overseeing some of the nation’s most prolific offenses, 34-year-old Jake Spavital begins his first season as head football coach and takes over the reins at Texas State in 2019.

The second-youngest head coach in the Football Bowl Subdivision was named Texas State’s head coach on Nov. 30, 2018, after serving as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at West Virginia in the last two years.

AT WEST VIRGINIA In 2018, West Virginia featured one of the nation’s top eight offenses that eclipsed 500 yards and 40 points eight times. The Mountaineer offense produced a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, a Second-Team All-America offensive lineman, a Second-Team All-America wide receiver, and four NFL Draft selections.

West Virginia ranked No. 3 in passing offense, No. 4 in passing efficiency, No. 3 in total offense and fourth-down conversions, No. 9 in scoring offense, No. 12 in completion percentage and passing yards per completion, and No. 25 in third-down conversions.

The Mountaineers accumulated 5,724 yards, including 3,939 passing yards and 38 touchdowns. West Virginia ended the regular season ranked No. 15 in the AP poll and No. 16 in the coaches’ poll after spending the entire season nationally ranked for the first time since 2007.

Quarterback Will Grier was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, becoming the eighth quarterback under Spavital’s tutelage to be drafted or to play in the NFL. The others included Case Keenum, Brandon Weeden, Geno Smith, Johnny Manziel, Kyler Murray, Kyle Allen, and Davis Webb.

Grier finished fourth in the Heisman balloting and was a finalist for the Maxwell Award, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, the Senior Class Award and the Manning Award. He was a Second-Team All-Big 12 selection behind Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray after completing 67 percent of his 3,974 passes for 3,864 yards and 37 touchdowns with just eight interceptions in 11 games in 2018.

Offensive lineman Yodny Cajuste was taken in the third round by New England. He was named a Football Writers Second-Team All-American and Big 12 CoOffensive Lineman of the Year after playing 776 snaps as the key blocker in the Mountaineer offense in 2018.

Wide receiver Gary Jennings was chosen by the Seattle Seahawks in the fourth round after he caught 54 passes for 917 yards and 13 touchdowns to earn Honorable Mention All-Big 12 honors in 2018.

Tight end Trevon Wesco was selected by the New York Jets in the fourth round after being named a First-Team All-Big 12 selection as a senior. He registered 26 catches for 366 yards and a touchdown and developed into one of the best blocking tight ends in the country.

West Virginia ranked among the nation’s top 20 offenses in 2017 when Spavital returned to Morgantown. The Mountaineers ranked No. 13 in passing offense, No. 16 in passing efficiency and No. 20 in total offense. West Virginia ranked No. 3 in fourth-down conversion percentage, No. 8 in fewest tackles for loss allowed, and No. 25 in first downs, fewest sacks and passing yards per completion.

David Sills V was a two-time All-Big 12 performer and an AFCA and Walter Camp SecondTeam All-American before signing with the Buffalo Bills as a free agent. He caught 65 passes for 986 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2018. Sills was a finalist for the 2017 Biletnikoff Award after recording 60 receptions for 980 yards and 18 touchdowns for the Mountaineers.

Grier was a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award and Big 12 Newcomer of the Year after throwing for 3,490 yards and 34 touchdowns.

AT CALIFORNIA Spavital returned to Morgantown after serving as the interim head coach at Cal in January 2017. He was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for one of the nation’s top 10 offenses during the 2016 season. The Golden Bears were ranked No. 4 in passing offense (358.8 yards per game), No. 8 in first down offense (335), No. 10 in total offense (518.3 yards per game) and No. 22 in scoring offense (37.1 points per game).

Cal established single-season school records for pass completions (383), fewest fumbles lost (3) and fewest turnovers (15), while equaling a school mark for most field goals made (22). The Golden Bears set NCAA FBS single game records with 118 plays and 40 first downs in a 52-49 double overtime win over Oregon.

Quarterback Davis Webb was named Athlon’s Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year, a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award and a semifinalist for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award after completing 382of-620 passes for 4,295 yards and 37 touchdowns that season. He ranked No. 3 nationally in completions and points responsible for, No. 4 in total yards, No. 5 in passing yards and No. 8 in passing touchdowns.

The offense also produced Freshman AllAmerican wide receiver Demetris Robertson after he caught 50 passes for 767 yards and set school freshman records. Chad Hanson was a First-Team All-Pac-12 selection after ranking second nationally with 124.9 receiving yards per game and seventh with 92 receptions.

AT TEXAS A&M Spavital went to Cal after spending three years as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Texas A&M from 2013-15. He shared play-calling duties during the 2013 season before earning full responsibility from 2014-15. The Aggies enjoyed a 25-14 record during Spavital’s three-year stint, including 8-5 marks in his final two years as the offensive coordinator.

In 2015, Texas A&M had a 1,000-yard rusher and 1,000-yard receiver in the same season for the fourth time in school history. Tra Carson rushed for 1,165 yards, and Christian Kirk had 80 receptions for 1,009 yards and seven touchdowns.

In 2014, the Aggies led the Southeastern Conference and ranked No. 7 in the nation with 39 passing touchdowns, and were No. 12 nationally in passing offense with 305.5 yard per game. Texas A&M posted upsets at No. 9 South Carolina (52-29) and No. 3 Auburn (41-38) in 2014.

In 2013, the Aggies set single-season SEC and school records with 4,593 passing yards and had 6,999 total yards of offense to rank No. 2 in the SEC and in Texas A&M history, No. 4 nationally in total offense (538.4) and No. 7 in passing offense (353.3).

The Aggies broke the school record for completion percentage by connecting on 69.3 percent of their passes and finished No. 3 in SEC history.

Quarterback Johnny Manziel threw 37 touchdown passes, tying him for No. 4 in the nation, while passing for 4,114 yards, ranking No. 8 nationally.

AT WEST VIRGINIA From 2011-12, Spavital was the quarterbacks coach at West Virginia and spent two seasons tutoring Heisman Trophy candidate Geno Smith, who racked up 11,662 passing yards and 98 touchdowns in his career. The Mountaineers ranked No. 9 nationally in passing efficiency (161.97) and scoring offense (39.5 point per game), No. 10 in passing offense (330.2 yards per game) and total offense (502.0 yards per game). Smith was No. 5 nationally in passing yards (4,205), passing yards per game (323.5 yards per game) and No. 6 in passing efficiency (163.86).

In his first season at West Virginia, Spavital helped lead the Mountaineers to a 10-3 overall record and a win over Clemson in the 2012 Orange Bowl. West Virginia ranked No. 6 nationally in passing offense (346.9 yards per game) and was No. 13 in scoring offense (37.6 points per game), No. 15 in total offense (469.5 yards per game) and No. 19 in passing efficiency. That year, Smith became the first 4,000-yard passer in West Virginia history when he threw for 4,385 yards. He was responsible for 33 touchdowns (31 passing, two rushing) to set another school record.

AT OKLAHOMA STATE Spavital spent the 2010 season as an offensive graduate assistant at Oklahoma State.

Keenum was a finalist for the Manning and O’Brien awards and the Conference USA MVP and Offensive MVP after completing 492-of-700 passes for 5,671 yards and 44 touchdowns.

AT TULSA Spavital began his coaching career as an offensive quality control assistant under head coach Gus Malzahn in 2008. That year, Tulsa was the No. 1 ranked offense in the Football Bowl Subdivision and boasted an 11-4 record and a victory over Ball State in the GMAC Bowl.

PLAYING CAREER A native of Tulsa, Okla., Spavital was a twoyear letterman as a quarterback and punter at Missouri State from 2004-07. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2008.

Spavital was a Consensus First-Team AllState quarterback at Tulsa’s Union High School, posting a 26-1 career record and leading Union to the Class 6A state championship in 2002. He was selected to play in the 2004 Texas vs. Oklahoma Oil Bowl All-Star game.

PERSONAL Spavital is married to the former Mehgan Morris, one of the top gymnasts in West Virginia history. They have a daughter, Madison Grace, and a son, Landyn Zachary. His father, Steve, is a former high school football coach, while his brother Zac is the defensive coordinator at Texas State.

Brian McCall, Ph.D., is chancellor of the Texas State University System, the first university system established in Texas, comprising seven institutions with more than 84,000 students and 16,000 faculty and staff.

Dr. McCall previously served in the Texas House of Representatives, first elected in 1991 to represent the areas of North Dallas, Frisco, Allen, and chairman of the House Calendars Committee and as a member of the Higher Education Committee. ‘Texas Monthly’ named McCall one of the “10 Best” legislators of the 2009 session.

McCall wrote and passed one of the largest tax-cut bills in the history of Texas and during his last session secured $5 million in funding for The University of Texas at Dallas’ Center for Values and Medicine. McCall is the author of ‘The Power of the Texas Governor: Connally to Bush,’ published by University of Texas Press, which examines how various governors have overcome the institutional limitations of the office to achieve significant political power.

A long-time civic and community volunteer, McCall is founder and chairman of the board of The Empowerment Project, a non-profit organization which has sent more than $10 million worth of math and science books to disadvantaged schools in the Republic of South Africa, and helped construct a library in Vietnam through the Libraries of Love organization. The Empowerment Project also raised more than $350,000 to provide direct support for the medical needs of children in north Texas.

McCall is the recipient of the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award from The University of Texas at Dallas. Texas State’s Round Rock Campus, located just north of Austin, offers students the opportunity to take courses leading to bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, and other professional designations. In May 2018, the departments of Communication Disorders, Physical

Therapy, and Respiratory Care in the College of Health Professions relocated from San Marcos to Round Rock.

The three departments joined the St. David’s School of Nursing on the Round Rock Campus, which opened as a new program in 2010 to help address the state’s chronic nursing shortage.

As the university’s student population has grown from 303 in 1903 to 38,666 in 2017, the university’s footprint has grown from 39,283 gross square feet of space in its first building, Old Main, to over eight million gross square feet today, and now includes a 495-acre San Marcos campus, a 101-acre campus in Round Rock, 80 acres housing the university’s research and commercialization activities in the Science, Technology, and Advanced Research (STAR) Park, plus 4,522 additional acres of recreational, instructional, farm, and ranch land.

Authorized by the Texas Legislature in 1899 and originally called Southwest Texas State Normal School, Texas State opened its doors in 1903. Over the years, the State Legislature broadened the institution’s scope and changed its name, in succession, to Southwest Texas State Normal College, Southwest Texas State Teachers College, Southwest Texas State Co allege, and Southwest Texas State University. In 2003, the Legislature changed the name to Texas State University-San Marcos, and in 2011 to Texas State University. Each name reflects the university’s growth from a small teacher preparation institution to a major multipurpose research university.

UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION

Since Denise M. Trauth was named the ninth president at Texas State University in June 2002, the university has achieved many milestones, including: •Obtaining the status of R2: Doctoral University – Higher Research Activity in the Carnegie Classification, the leading framework for recognizing and describing higher education in the United States.

•Receiving the designation of Emerging Research University by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

•Moving to NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision and the Sun Belt Conference.

•Increasing the diversity of the student body.

The university became a Hispanic-Serving Institution in fall 2010, has the 11th largest Hispanic Undergraduate enrollment at U. •Expanding The Wittliff Collections, including a permanent exhibition room for the Lonesome Dove Collection, acquisition of the Cormac McCarthy Papers, Sandra Cisneros archives, Edward S. Curtis Treasures of the North American Indian photography collection, and the creation of the Texas Music Collection featuring the archives of Jerry Jeff Walker, Willie Nelson, and various Tejano Music artists.

•Constructing a state-of-the-art Archives and Research Center for the preservation and storage of materials from the Albert B. Alkek Library and The Wittliff Collections.

•Gaining approval for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, launched by a $6 million gift from the St. David’s Foundation, and now enrolling 200 upper-level nursing students. A Master of Science in Nursing program with a Family Nurse Practitioner major is supported by an additional $2 million gift from the Foundation. Subsequently, the Foundation donated $8 million for graduate Nursing scholarships, two new MSN degrees, and Willow Hall on the Round Rock Campus.

•Creating the Ingram School of Engineering which was made possible through $9 million in gifts from Bruce and Gloria Ingram, including $4 million for scholarships. Subsequently, the Ingrams donated another $7 million toward construction of the Engineering and Science building, Ingram Hall. In fall 2019, the School of Engineering will launch a Bachelor of Science degree program with a major in Civil Engineering.

•Constructing a new Performing Arts Center, launched by an $8 million gift from Patti Strickel Harrison.

•Obtaining major gifts from Jerry D. and Linda Gregg Fields totaling nearly $14 million, including more than $9 million to athletics. The university honored the Fields with their name on the West Side Complex of Bobcat Stadium.

•Creating and then expanding the Science, Technology, and Advanced Research Park which is a research facility and small business incubator that spurs innovations and commercialization by encouraging partnerships between the university and private companies in science, technology, and advanced research.

•Constructing over 3 million square feet of campus facilities including Bobcat Stadium’s North Side Complex; the Undergraduate Academic Center; the Chautauqua/Gaillardia Housing Complex; the Falls/Sayers Housing Complex; the Angelina/

As part of his continued commitment to Texas State University, Distinguished Alumnus Richard A. Castro established generous gifts to support endowed scholarships for students and student-athletes. He is a Texas State Hero and member of the Founders Society. To honor his philanthropic leadership, the Undergraduate Admissions Center was named in his honor, and the Champions Club level at the University Events Center was renamed the Richard A. Castro Legacy Club.

•Improving numerous campus buildings including the Bobcat Baseball/Softball Stadium and all of the historic residence halls in the heart of campus; expanding the Student Recreation Center, the LBJ Student Center, and the Family and Consumer Sciences Building; and initiating the transformation of the Albert B. Alkek Library into the more modern Learning Commons design.

•Expanding curriculum. In the last three years alone, Texas State has launched 16 new degree programs, including but not limited to: a Ph.D. in Computer Science, a Ph.D. in Applied Anthropology, a Master of Science in Nursing with a major in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, a Master of Science in Data Analytics and Information Systems, a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences, and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.

•Initiating the Common Experience, which is an annual university-wide focus for classroom discussion, performing arts, exhibitions, invited speakers, and community involvement. This year’s theme is “Truth.”

•Establishing a $10 million endowment supporting The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment through a lead gift of $5 million from The Meadows Foundation and matching funds from the Texas Research Incentive Program.

•Receiving a $15 million NASA award for STEM Collaboration between Education and Engineering to support teacher training. This is the largest grant received by Texas State.

•Advancing into the top quartile nationally in total

Research and Development Funding according to the National Science Foundation.

In addition to her university responsibilities, President Trauth is a member and former president of the Austin Area Research Organization, serves on the Board of Trustees of the Southwest Research Institute, is a member of the Philosophical Society of Texas and the Texas Legislative Conference Advisory Committee, and is former President of the Greater San Marcos Partnership.

Currently, President Trauth is the Vice-Chair of the NCAA Division I Board of Directors, is a NCAA Division I Board Representative to the NCAA Board of Governors, is chair of the NCAA Division I Finance Committee, is a member of the Division I Administrative Committee, is a member of the NCAA Independent Accountability Oversight Committee, and is a member of the Sun Belt Conference Board of Directors Executive Committee.

She has served as President of the Sun Belt Conference Board of Directors and as member to the NCAA Presidential Forum. She has received the Ohtli Award from the government of Mexico, the Austin Business Journal’s Special Achievement Award, the Girl Scouts’ Women of Distinction Award, the “Respect” Award for the First Tee Greater Austin 9 Core Values Awards, and the Austin Chamber of Commerce Education Leadership Award.

She is married to Dr. John Huffman, professor emeritus at Bowling Green and UNC Charlotte.

They have two daughters, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

ATHLETICS ADMINISTRATION

In his 16 years as the director of athletics at Texas State, Larry Teis has overseen the Bobcats becoming one of the top athletic programs in the Sun Belt Conference.

Texas State claimed its first Sun Belt Conference AllSports Trophy, the Vic Bubas Cup, in 2018-19 after winning six overall conference championships. Texas State won Sun Belt Conference championships in volleyball, soccer, baseball, women’s indoor track and field, and men’s outdoor track and field. The Bobcats also won the Sun Belt Volleyball Championship tournament.

During the last two years, the Bobcats have claimed nine Sun Belt Conference Championships and two Sun Belt championship tournaments. Texas State won the Bubas Cup in 2018-19 after finishing as the runner-up school in each of the four previous years.

The Bobcats began their transition to the NCAA Division I FBS Subdivision in 2011. After a one-year membership in the Western Athletic Conference, Texas State joined the Sun Belt in 2013-14 and has won 17 overall conference championships since that time.

The Bubas Cup is the fourth conference all-sports trophy the Bobcats have won since Teis was named director of athletics. Texas State claimed three Southland Conference All-Sports trophies and six SLC women’s all-sports trophies between 2004-11.

Since the Bobcats announced they would transition to the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), 583 student-athletes have earned bachelor’s degrees, and more than 1,500 student-athletes have attained grade point averages of 3.0 or higher. In 2018-19, the women’s golf and tennis teams were publicly recognized by the NCAA for ranking among the Top 10 percent of their sports with multi-year APR rates for the four-year period ending in 2017-18. It was the 11th consecutive year that women’s tennis team and seventh straight year that the women’s golf team have received public recognition from the NCAA. Facility improvements include a redesigned court and new seating in Strahan Arena at the University Events Center, new playing surface for Jim Wacker Field at Bobcat Stadium, new practice courts for the basketball and volleyball teams, and the opening of new Bobcat baseball and softball stadiums. In addition, the Jerry D. and Linda Gregg Fields West Side Complex and $33 million North Side Complex have been added to Bobcat Stadium to increase the seating capacity to 30,000.

A new track stadium was built for the 2012-13 season and Texas State’s track and field teams have new coaching offices, locker rooms, weight room and training room in the North End Zone Complex. Renovations at the Bobcat Tennis Complex include covered seating, indoor courts, a refurbished locker room, and a new playing surface. The renovations at the soccer stadium added a locker room, weight and training rooms.

The University Events Center opened in 2018-19, increasing seating capacity to nearly 10,000 and adding club seats for Strahan Arena. The increased seating resulted in the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams setting attendance records. The new Events Center added

new locker rooms, weight room, offices, academic areas and meeting rooms for men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, baseball and softball. It also added new offices and support spaces for men’s and women’s golf, soccer and tennis.

Texas State Athletics received its first four, million-dollar gifts since announcing its transition to the FBS. In 2018, El Paso businessman, philanthropist and Texas State Distinguished Alumnus Richard Castro gave a $1 million gift to the university to support scholarships for studentathletes. In 2016, Dan and Cindee Diepenhorst made a $1 million donation to match other philanthropic support for athletics scholarships. Jerry and Linda Fields donated more than $7 million to the program for Bobcat Stadium renovations to include the West Side Complex and Strutter Gallery in 2009 after providing a gift of $100,000 to help fund Texas State’s football season tickets drive for the 2008 season. The first $1 million gift to the department came from Darren B. Casey in 2008. Those donations have combined with record-setting corporate sponsorships.

Teis represented the Sun Belt Conference on the NCAA Division I Board of Directors Council, serves on the President’s Council at Texas State and reports directly to President Denise M. Trauth.

President Trauth cited leadership skills, experience and values as elements that made him the right fit when she named Teis Texas State’s eighth director of athletics in March 2004.

Teis was honored as the 2005-06 General Sports TURF Systems AD of the Year Division I-AA West Region Winner, presented by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. In 2007, he was honored by the AllAmerican Football Foundation with the General Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award.

He assumed his current position after serving as associate athletic director for external affairs, and oversaw game management, marketing, promotions, facilities and ticket sales. Teis was the administrator for the men’s and women’s golf, baseball and volleyball teams, as well as the Strutters. In addition, he oversaw the Bobcat Athletic Foundation from 1998-02. A native of Fort Worth, Teis came to Texas State after spending four years as the director of athletic marketing at TCU and three years as the assistant director of New Mexico’s Lobo Club.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from TCU, a master’s in sports administration from St. Thomas University and a doctorate in HPER with an emphasis in sports administration from the University of New Mexico.

Teis and his wife, Jana, have two daughters, Taylor, who earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Texas State, and Shelby, who is a current student at Texas State.

BOBCAT STADIUM

Bobcat Stadium, which serves as the home field for the Texas State Bobcats, originally opened in 1981 and was expanded to its current 30,000-seat capacity in 2012.

The stadium includes a Football End Zone Complex that was built in 2002 and houses newly renovated offices, locker room and meeting areas, a full-service training center, weight room, equipment room and offices for the football coaches and support staff. The J. Garland Warren Reception Room is located on the second floor and serves as a banquet room for Texas State Athletics and is the site for press conferences and weekly football media updates.

The playing surface is named Jim Wacker Field in honor of Texas State’s former football coach (197982) and athletic director (1998-2001). Wacker’s 42-8 record at Texas State is the best four-year mark in school history. He also led the Bobcats to a pair of back-to-back NCAA Division II national championships in 1981 and 1982. His 1982 team finished the season with a 14-0 record, and he was named the College Division Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association. He passed away on Aug. 26, 2003 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

In 2006, the Bill Miller Room was dedicated in honor of Bill Miller, who is a former football coach (1965-78 when he compiled a record of 86-53-3) and athletic director in 1975-92. His 86 career victories are the most wins by a Texas State head football coach. Originally used to host Athletic Alumni functions during home football games, the room now serves as an academic study area for the Bobcat football team.

The Jerry D. and Linda Gregg Fields West Side Complex added new premium seating consisting of 15 luxury suites and a club seat level containing 450 seats beginning in 2009.

The addition of a $33 million expansion enclosing the north end zone added 13,500 general admission seats for upper and lower levels and increased the seating capacity in the Bobcat Stadium to 30,000.

The North Side Complex also houses a Strutters Gallery, the Texas State Athletic Ticket Office, a visiting team locker room, and a weight room, a training room, locker rooms and coaching offices for Texas State’s men’s and women’s track and field teams. In addition, the north side expansion added concession stands, restrooms and a first aid center on the complex of the stadium.

In the southwest corner of Bobcat Stadium is the Pavilion which hosts pregame and halftime hospitality areas for the Bobcat Club and “T” Association on game days.

A new playing surface was added in 2016 when Texas State became the nation’s first Division I football program to install the FieldTurf Revolution 360. The new turf is equipped with “Cool Play”, which is FieldTurf ’s exclusive and innovative Extruded Cork Composite (ECC) top dressing that will keep the playing surface 35 degrees cooler than traditional artificial turfs. The field now features alternating shades of green every five-yards and the state of Texas is in the design of the turf just outside of the south end zone behind the goalpost. The end zones are in Texas State maroon with Texas State lettered in gold with white outline.

The End Zone Complex features a new graphics package, backlit signage and new leather seats in the team meeting room.

SUN BELT CONFERENCE

With each passing season, the Sun Belt Conference continues to challenge itself, and its competitors, in all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Not content with being simply the youngest football conference in the Football Bowl Subdivision, the conference has shown it can rise each and every season that comes along. Since the birth of the league as a FBS member in 2001, the evidence is clear the conference is indeed rising above competitors and peer conferences.

At no time has league athletic success been more obvious than during the course of the last several football seasons.

In recent years, Sun Belt members have participated in as many as six bowl games, a 50 percent increase in the league’s former highwater mark and only a decade removed from a “one-bowl league” moniker in its formative years.

The Sun Belt has earned respect in the FBS over the last several years by consistently beating teams from peer conferences, winning bowl games and upsetting Power Five teams.

In fact, the 2018 football season is direct evidence of the Sun Belt’s success as the conference broke its record for non-conference wins in a single season. The 24 total wins eclipsed the previous mark of 22 set in 2016. The Sun Belt’s 21 regular season nonconference wins is a the record surpassing the previous mark set in 2013 by two victories. The Sun Belt also had the best non-conference win percentage of any Group of Five Conference this past season.

The Sun Belt gained much notoriety and notice during the last several football seasons, but that has by no means been the league’s only hallmark. Men’s basketball – the league’s symbol of success in its formative years – recently finished with its highest conference RPI in more than a decade with a No. 13 national finish, and conference members found success in several NCAA postseason events.

Those league successes have been more public in recent years, in part because the Sun Belt itself has been progressive and in the forefront of the digital media world. The league continues to adapt to the ever-changing world of collegiate athletics and continues the process of evolving to better serve its membership, keeping the pledge it made at its founding to be a league of opportunity. Athletic and academic programs who have shown progressive thinking and the desire to improve have always found a home in the Sun Belt.

In March 2018, the Sun Belt was given a major opportunity boost in presenting itself to the viewing public as the league announced a continuation of its relationship with ESPN. The partnership with ESPN is the most significant and extensive multimedia rights agreement in conference history. Highlights of the contract include that a minimum of 500 events a year will appear on an ESPN platform beginning in 2020 and every Sun Belt football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball game will be viewable on an ESPN platform. It was announced that linear network football games at Sun Belt home venues will expand to a minimum of 10 games a year on a combination of ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. Sun Belt Championship events will be on an ESPN platform each academic year to give exposure to all conference sports, and digital productions will expand to include regular season competition in Sun Belt sports that have received only limited coverage previously.

Opportunity for Sun Belt growth and success extends beyond television deals. During the recent 2017-18 academic year, Sun Belt member institutions awarded more than $50 million in scholarships to more than 3,100 studentathletes, while providing life experiences such as team building, domestic and foreign travel, community service, mentoring and recognition through honors and awards. Sun Belt institutions are leaders in providing career

services and the tools to assist in the pursuit of personal goals. Each member employs full-time academic advisors and on average nearly two dozen tutors for academic support. Last spring, the Sun Belt hosted a mental health summit aimed at making mental health awareness a priority and helping to erase the stigma associated with mental health and the need to seek help.

Individual opportunities extend beyond the league. The Sun Belt had 40 players on active NFL rosters during the past season, with representation on 23 of 32 NFL clubs. The league recently became one of seven conferences nationwide to have back-to-back first-round selections in the NBA Draft when Louisiana’s Elfrid Payton went No. 10 overall to the Orlando Magic and Georgia State’s R. J. Hunter was the No. 28 pick of the Boston Celtics the following year.

The Sun Belt has nationally-respected programs in nearly every NCAA sport offered and remains a fixture on the national scene while remaining heavily involved in the conduct and competition of college athletics. It also provides opportunities for success on many unique and different levels. In athletic parlance, the Sun Belt has “upside,” and its newest mantra of “Rise Above” is just as applicable now as when it was founded as a home to some of the nation’s premier mid-major basketball programs.

In its first year, one of those programs reached the pinnacle of NCAA men’s basketball competition when UNC Charlotte earned a berth in the Final Four. That type of success set a high bar, but the league’s four-decade history is sprinkled with landmark success in all seasons.

In the spring, baseball and softball continue to put the league in the national spotlight with deep runs in postseason play and high visibility in national polls. Coastal Carolina reigned supreme at the pinnacle of college baseball, winning the College World Series during the 2016 season.

SUNBELT CONFERENCE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP AND BOWL OPPORTUNITIES

The Sun Belt Conference will conduct its second Football Championship Game on December 6, 2019 and the game will air on ESPN or ESPN2 beginning at 11 a.m. The game will feature the winners of the Sun Belt’s two divisions and will take place at the home site of the divisional champion with the best overall conference winning percentage.

The two divisions will consist of five teams. The East Division is comprised of Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia State and Troy. The West Division will include Arkansas State, Louisiana, ULM, South Alabama and Texas State. TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURE FOR DETERMINATION OF HOST SITE The Championship Game shall be played at the home venue of the Division Champion with highest winning percentage in Conference games only.

The following tie-breaker procedure is used to determine the host location for the Sun Belt Conference Football Championship game if necessary: 1. Head to head result between tied teams; 2. If still tied, if one team was ranked in the latest available CFP Selection Committee rankings and wins in the final weekend of the conference regular season, it will be declared the division champion. If in that same scenario, the team that was the highest-ranked team in the latest available CFP Selection Committee rankings loses in the final weekend of the conference regular season, a composite average of selected computer rankings will be used to determine the host.

3. If there are multiple teams ranked in the latest available CFP Selection Committee rankings, the highest-ranked team that wins in the final weekend of the conference regular season will be declared the host.

4. If none of the ranked teams win on the final weekend of the conference regular season, a composite average of selected computer rankings that include all games on the final weekend of the conference regular season, will be used to determine the host; 5. If no teams are ranked in the latest available CFP Selection Committee rankings going into the final weekend of the conference regular season, a composite average of selected computer rankings that include all games on the final weekend of the conference regular season, will be used to determine the host; 6. If still tied, the team with the highest winning percentage against all common conference opponents shall be the host; 7. If still tied, the team with the highest overall (conference and non-conference) winning percentage against FBS teams shall be the host; 8. If still tied, coin toss will be conducted by the commissioner.

BOBCAT MARCHING BAND

With a history spanning one hundred years, the Bobcat Marching Band is one of the largest spirit organizations on campus! This energetic ensemble of 350 students offers an exciting opportunity for instrumentalists, color guard members, and twirlers of all university majors to enhance their collegiate experience by performing in an outstanding musical and spirit organization.

Over the years, the Bobcat Marching Band has established a national reputation for performance excellence. This reputation has led to performances at two Presidential inaugurations, as well as appearances in a Hollywood film, on the 1995 video Best of College Bands, and as a feature on the award-winning PBS television show The Biscuit Brothers.

In 2007, 2011, 2013, and 2019 the Bobcat Marching Band was selected to Texas State Football

have performances presented at the National Conference of the College Band Directors National Association.

Each year, the band also enjoys serving as ambassadors of the university, performing at high school marching exhibitions and other events around central Texas. Recent performances have included concerts at the Formula 1 U.S. Grand Prix and the Lone Star Le Mans auto races, and halftime performances for the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans.

The Bobcat Marching Band prides itself on being an integral part of the excitement of the college gameday experience. Whether before, during, or after the game, no band strives to support its team, entertain its fans, or to play as hard as “The Pride of the Hill Country,� the Texas State Bobcat Marching Band!
