Local dentist Peter James has pointed out to us that recycling is nothing new in Tewkesbury. Peter’s Cross House Dental practice is located in the half timbered building by Tewkesbury Cross, which is also home to Abbey Jewellers and the Get Connected mobile phone shop. Both these businesses have modern-looking shopfronts which were True or false? The windows that walked installed when Cross House was renovated in the 1930s. Peter tells us that a former Conservation Officer informed him that the old street-level timber frame windows were removed and installed at the old Bull

Inn, which is now part of Wetherspoon’s Royal Hop Pole Hotel in Church Street. Our photographs do seem to indicate a match but if any of our readers have information to back up the story, we’d love to hear from them.

Members of local business groups recently met with representatives from Tewkesbury Town Council to highlight concerns about the future of the town’s Christmas lights display and the Festival of Lights event. Historically both the lights and the popular family event have been funded and managed by volunteers from Tewkesbury Chamber of Commerce with support from the Rotary Club, Federation of Small Businesses and a few local businesses. In 2012 due to a shortage of Chamber volunteers, the Discover Tewkesbury Retailer Group ran the Christmas Festival of Lights event, and the Chamber provided the Christmas lights display. For over fifteen years the lights have been switched on at the Christmas Festival of Lights held on the last Sunday in November. From 2013 this event will be subject to new measures and procedures imposed by the Tewkesbury Safety Advisory Group which includes Gloucestershire Highways and the Emergency Services. As a result of these

new measures, the increased responsibility being placed on individuals and a shortage of volunteers to help organise and run the event. The future of the Christmas Lights is also at risk due to lack of funds, and available funding options. For the last fifteen years local businesses owners and volunteers from the Chamber have raised enough funds to cover the annual cost of the Christmas lights which is in the region of £10,000. Acting Chair of the Chamber, David Bloxham, commented “Most local residents and businesses think that it’s a public body such as the Town or

Borough Council who organise and pay for the town’s Christmas lights, which is not the reality. “If Tewkesbury wants Christmas lights this year more people and local businesses are going to have make a financial contribution or

offer services in kind. “If sufficient funds can be raised by the beginning of November, the Chamber will make every effort to ensure the Christmas lights are switched on” If you would like to make a donation send a cheque made payable to “Tewkesbury Chamber” to the treasurer, Sarah Costello Byrne of Nicklins, 1a Church Street, Tewkesbury. Payment may also be made by BACS.

THAT’S A METEOR, RIGHT? Was it a bird? Was it a ‘plane? No - apparently it was a meteor, flashing across the skies above Tewkesbury on Wednesday 8th May.

• Grant Solar Panels • Air Source Heat Pumps • Rainwater Harvesting • Biomass Boilers

Joanna Dale was returning home from an evening out at Theoc House at around 9.45pm, when her son Charlie spotted the phenomenon. “It was quite large and glowing green as it sped across the sky,” said Joanna. “I wonder if any other Tewkesbury Direct readers saw it?” According to the social media network Twitter, thousands of people reported seeing the ‘fireball’ heading in a northerly direction. A high proportion of the sightings came from Cornwall, Hampshire, Lancashire, South Wales and Worcester-=shire. “Some experts have said that the meteor could have formed from debris from Halley’s

Comet,” said Joanna. Meteor sightings do occur several times each year on a worldwide scale. The science website EarthSky.org says that the Eta Aquarid meteor shower does stem from Halley’s Comet - as it is debris left behind in the comet’s orbit. Yet there is no conclusive proof that the Tewkesbury fireball emanated from that particular source. It could

have been ‘space junk,’ or simply a rock from outer space, vaporising as it entered the Earth’s atmosphere. Halley’s Comet is steeped in legend and is believed to have appeared during the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The comet is visible from Earth about every 75 years. It last appeared in 1986, but is not due to be seen again until 2061.

Reader Derek Round, of Tewkesbury, kindly sent in these photographs from his archive collection. They are of a street scene in the village of Alderton. Above is a photograph taken in March 1910: below is the same view taken in February this year. The old postcard is postmarked ‘Alderton, Tewkesbury, 4.45pm, MR 11 10, and was sent to Ada Doe - who lived in Ealing, West London - from a local resident called Bertha. She describes the village rectory as being ‘the other side of the church’ and records that she recently received ‘a lovely album’ for her birthday. “Where the four hayricks are part of the site today is the Alderton Stores and house, says Derek. “The church in the background is St. Margaret’s Parish Church. “I like to think that the five children in this picture are saying to the cameraman ” keep out this is our village, what’s the password?” Thank you, Derek, for this most interesting contribution. The 1940’s weekend on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire railway was a success as wartime reinaction groups, enthusiasts and an enthralled audience enjoyed this unique event. WET WIPES & BLOCKED PIPES We asked drain expert, Brad Maber, for some advice on drainage and this month Brad talks about toilet wipes. One of the most common causes of blockages in the industry today is from toilet wipes. We see adverts on the T.V. where wipes are used to clean the toilet and bathroom and can be flushed down the toilet. Unfortunately this is not the case. Wipes can very 䥾 Brad Maber easily become stuck in drainage lines. This could be due to the drainage run having a defect such as roots or a displaced joint. The wipes do not break down when flushed and even after travelling through miles of drainage system they still turn up whole at the sewage treatment plants. They can become wrapped up when flushed in large quantities and cause major blockages. We would advise not flushing any type of wipe or any products that do not break up when flushed. If you are on a septic tank system that leads to a soakaway, wipes can clog up your soakaway and cause it to become defective. They can also get wrapped up in pumping chambers causing the pumps to burn out. 䥾 Wet wipes found when Need to speak to Brad? Ring unblocking a foul drain

CRASH COURSE FOR MARITIME VOLUNTEERS Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service took part in Exercise Selfridge at the Cotswold Water Park last month. Head of Unit Nic Price said “The exercise was run by Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service and we joined more than 400 emergency workers, hovercrafts and a SeaKing helicopter for the day. “The scenario was

that there had been a mid-air collision and our unit was involved in combing the area by land and water searching for survivors and wreckage. “It was all very lifelike as even part of a wrecked helicopter cabin

was hidden in woodland for us to find. “Much was learned from the exercise and we gained valuable experience of how to help in a large scale incident whilst working alongside other rescue services.

The concert will take place on Saturday June 15th, in Tewkesbury Methodist Church, at 7pm. Admission is £5 plus a tin. There will be light refreshments and a grand raffle with prizes donated by local shops and businesses. The top cash prize of £50 has been donated by Cotteswold Dairy. The Heart & Soul Community Choir was formed at The Roses Theatre following workshops there, and was originally called 'The Rosebuds.' The choir was later renamed and moved to the Methodist Church. The choir regularly has over 70 singers at rehearsals, which take place at The Methodist Church, The Cross,

THEFTS FROM VEHICLES IN THE TWYNING AREA Local butcher Lee Halford has asked us to inform readers about a spate of thefts from vehicles in the Twyning area. A number of catalytic converters, including Lee’s, were stolen from vehicles overnight last month. Many of these were taken from cars parked on owners’ driveways. Motorists whose cars have a high ground clearances should be particularly vigilant and, if possible, garage their vehicles especially at night.

‘ELMBURY’S OWN FIELD’ - THE HAM ‘Every man, woman and child in Elmbury* had the right to walk and play in the field, which gave them a good possessive feeling about it. It was always “our Ham.” These are the words of the naturalist and author, in his book ‘Portrait of Elmbury.’ Elmbury was his name for Tewkesbury. As part of the British Ecological Society Centenary, the John Moore Museum in Tewkesbury is providing a series of events, including exhibitions, walks, talks and education workshops focused on the Severn Ham. Most of the events are free. At the Old Baptist Chapel on Saturday 15th June (7pm-8.30pm) there will be a fascinating talk on the Severn Ham, an area of local natural beauty and of historic importance. Local speakers, Alan Purkiss, John Badham, Steve Goodchild and Simon Lawton will each be giving a short talk on the different aspects of the Severn Ham, from its origins and ownership, flora, fauna, trade and pastimes right up to the modern day and its current stewardship. A new exhibition on the flora and fauna of the Severn Ham in Tewkesbury will be opening at the John Moore Museum on Saturday 15th June. Visitors can find out all about this fascinating local habitat and the many species which dwell there. The exhibition runs until the end of October. Normal admission charges apply. On Saturday 29th June, local nature

The Severn Ham experts will lead a short guided walk of the Severn Ham. It will leave the museum in Church Street at 2pm and finish around 3.30pm. New Town Mayor looks forward to helping the local community Councillors Christine Danter and Julie Greening celebrated after the Mayor Making service at the Watson Hall last month, writes Shelby Powell. New Town Mayor Christine and her deputy Julie are looking forward to working closely together over the next twelve months, to help the community in which they live. New Town Mayor Chris Danter and her Deputy Mayor Julie Greening raise a toast to Tewkesbury for a prosperous and positive year ahead selling refreshments. With the help of Mike Keen Price, Christine is

also planning to organise a Town Crier competition in the near future. On Sunday 2nd June, Tewkesbury's Town Crier Mike Keen Price will be climbing the tower of Tewkesbury Abbey to make a royal proclamation on behalf of the residents of Tewkesbury. It will mark the 60th anniversary of the Coronation of the Queen. Mike believes this tradition is unique to Tewkesbury and we may be the only town in the

country to honour important royal events in this unique way. “I will be colouring my beard especially for the occasion with red, white and blue dye,” said Mike. “On Saturday 29th June it will be shaved off by popular local barber Alan Cresswell to raise much needed funds for the town's war memorial, at The Cross.” If you would like to sponsor Mike, please pop into the Town Hall with your donation.

ARMOUR IN THE ABBEY ATTRACTS THE CROWDS From the well know armour featured in the Antiques Road Show, in its iconic pose in an open topped Morris Minor, to a genuine 16th century suit of armour, and a complete set of Japanese harness – Armour in the Abbey had it all, writes Peggy Clatworthy. The exhibition, over the bank holiday weekend was a joint venture between the Abbey and the Medieval Festival. Youngsters were delighted to get hands on with, swords breastplates and helmets of all kinds. Older visitors admired The Deerhurst Hilt -the hilt of a sword of the period of the Battle of Tewkesbury, found at Deerhurst, a cannon stone or early cannon

ball, found in a garden in Battle Road, and other artefacts. Re-enactment group Histeria, who portray the camp of King Edward IV at Tewkesbury Medieval Festival, set up delightful court in the choir, and throughout the weekend the King held knighting ceremonies for members of his household. The event attracted around 1000 visitors.

LOOKING FOR THE UNDERWORLD Local amateur metal detectorist, Stuart Borley, has years of experience in searching for the past. Stuart was a salvage diver in the USA and was involved with raising treasure from the Spanish Galleon Atocha which sank in 1622. Stuart is now seeking permission from land owners who may have a garden, woodland or farmland to search for artifacts from the past. “There is a right and proper way to metal detect on other peoples land” says Stuart, “I use a pre-written agreement used by metal detecting groups, I share any value from finds on a 50/50 basis with the landowner, I am fully insured and my back-

ground in landscaping means that disturbed ground is restored. Also complete confidentiality is assured.” Stuart can put together a picture of the past from the finds he makes for those who are curious about the historical activities that have taken place on their land. If you want to find out more about where live, give Stuart an email on info@bredonhilllandscaping.co.uk or call 07894 432901. Tewkesbury Direct has also asked Stuart to provide a “Find of the month” which we will publish with a history and if the object is a mystery then we will ask readers for their view.

Whilst celebrating the 75th Anniversary of a much-respected company, younger readers might wonder why it is called ‘Cotteswold Dairies.’ The answer goes back to the last war when Harry Workman decided to move his dairy in a farm to a purpose built factory – in Cotteswold Road. Roger Workman agrees that it is not a wonderful example of architecture but blames wartime shortages. It was, however, a success until Harry once again looked ahead and realised that the ideal location for an expanding factory was out of the town, in Newtown. After the dairy left is was taken over by ‘Masterline’ but has been mercifully demolished and replaced by affordable homes. Happily the hallowed name of Workman has been perpetuated but why is part of it known as ‘Patenosters?’ Is it a spelling error? In any case, why name such houses in Latin for “our Father?” If you have any information please call John on (01684) 294262 or email johnhistory46@btinternet.com Meanwhile, Happy Birthday to the Workman Family!

Well it looks like it was Mike Smith from Bristol. Believe it or not Mike was visiting Tewkesbury when he popped into the Berkeley Arms in Church Street for a bite to eat. It seems that he enjoyed, Chef Lewis Carl Chicken and Mushroom pie so much, he made another trip from Bristol simply to buy some more pies to take home with him. Mike told Tewkesbury Direct "Those pies are to die for Man, I have been thinking of moving to Tewkesbury, and Lewis's pies may just swing it for me. Smiling, Landlord Laurence Mills adds "I told you our food was good".

LEGAL MATTERS with Thomson & Bancks

IS MEDIATION THE WAY FORWARD TO RESOLVE FAMILY DISPUTES? As legal aid is only available in very limited circumstances what other options are available to you to resolve family issues? Mediation is a tried and tested, and indeed successful method of dispute resolution. Mediators are trained to help resolve disputes over all issues faced by divorcing and separating couples, or indeed specific issues such as arrangements for any children. Mediators are neutral and will not take sides, so they cannot give advice to either of you. However, lawyer mediators will provide general legal information to both of you within the mediation, if this is appropriate. The process involves meeting with you and your partner together, identifying issues you cannot agree on and help you to try and reach agreement. Once you have proposals you both find acceptable, the mediator will prepare a summary of them together with a summary of any financial information, if this is relevant. John Sherahilo at Quality Solicitors Thomson & Bancks in Tewkesbury is a trained family mediator and is the only lawyer mediator in Tewkesbury. “Mediation is a good method of resolving family disputes which centres around the family rather than the traditional adversarial court approach which is centred around outcomes. The court process can take much longer and be much more expensive. In a mediation process, after the initial set up, I would hope to come to an understanding with the parties within three 1 ½ hour sessions, which you can imagine is much more cost effective than the adversarial court process. My view is that it is better for the family to try to resolve issues by talking in a safe and open environmental rather than continue to argue”.

It is advised that ear defenders should be taken for children and those that are adverse to loud noises. For details check out www.throckmortonairshow.com or on facebook. The Airfield is situated near Pershore.

MEDIEVAL POP MASTERS Last month we featured the launch of a new album by the UK’s leading medieval band, The York Waits. The Waits will be performing at the Roses Theatre on Wednesday 10th July on the lead up to Tewkesbury’s Medieval Festival. Director of Entertainments for the Medieval Festival, Bill Hunt, interviewed band leader Tim Bayley for us to give some background to this unique band. Bill asked… Who are the York Waits? The York Waits were formed in 1977, recreating the sound of the professional wind bands that had existed throughout Europe, from the 14th century. Period instruments played include the shawm (early oboe), sackbut (early trombone), bagpipes, recorders, lute, fiddle, harp, hurdy gurdy, crumhorn, flute, pipe and tabor. What brings York Waits to Tewkesbury? I led a medieval music workshop in Tewkesbury last year and, as a result, the York Waits were invited to play at The Roses Theatre, as part of this year’s Medieval Festival. Tell us about your new CD The White Rose and The Red CD features music from the age of Richard III, whose brother the Duke of Clarence, lies in Tewkesbury Abbey - another local connection! It includes international hits such as the famous L’Hom Arme, the beautiful chansons Le Souvenir and En vrowlic Wesen, plus popular dance tunes from the period. What are the bands future plans? We will be presenting our Richard III concert throughout the UK, including locations associated with Richard himself, such as Middleham in the Yorkshire Dales and a new recording of dance tunes, from the Gresley Manuscript of around 1500, is also planned.

ANOTHER BUSY FIRST HALF OF THE YEAR FOR CW GROUP

After the Lockout

by Darran McCann PB £8.99 Ireland 1917 sees Victor Lennon return from Dublin to his home village of Madden. He is a hero of the Easter Risings with leanings towards the novelty of communism, but he is summoned home to try to rescue his drunkard father, who is too partial to the illegal poteen he brews.

Local cleaning company CW Group report brisk trading in the first half of the year. Several new contracts have been successfully obtained, including Partner Logistics of Gloucester. CW Group were there to help Monarch Laundrette with the big clean up after vandals fired a fire extinguisher through the letterbox. Bernie Partington, the laundrette’s manager, was delighted with the hard work Clive and his team put in to get the premises clean and reopened. For the tenth year running, CW Group helped with the cleaning in the railway carriages for Cheltenham racegoers. CW Group director Clive Willis says he is amazed by the amount

of people who say ‘I didn’t realise you offered that service,’ after being in the business for over thirty years.

Monarch Laundrette before cleaning work

Monarch Laundrette after cleaning work Clive is keen to point out that CW Group can clean almost anything and are equipped with the latest technology and consumables, which

The vagaries of Irish rural life are well depicted in this first novel. There is the authorative honorary Bishop, Stanislaus, with whom Victor clashes at once. Victor's childhood sweetheart, Maggie, who obviously still has a soft spot for him, despite him having up and left her when he went away. Victor is no saint, but he has a strong following in the village, though this excludes the jealous village shopkeeper who has intentions towards Maggie. A successful Gallic football match leads to a planned celebration which the Bishop forbids to be held in the church hall, so an alternative structure is developed. All this festers away as the story is recounted from both Victor's and Stanislaus' view point. Anyone who has visited rural Ireland will picture the scene - those who have not will enjoy the imagery. allow them to tackle the most difficult cleaning tasks. “Whatever your cleaning requirements, whether industrial, commercial or domestic, give us a ring for advice,” said Clive. “We nearly always have a solution to the problem; people are amazed at the results ‘as good as new without the cost of replacement.” Clive would also like to remind customers that the CW Group are experts in carrying out the sensitive tasks of probate cleaning and would like to thank Teresa of Thomson & Bancks for their recent works, as well as Jane from the Albion Inn for appointing CW Group to clean their carpets. TEWKESBURY TO STAR ON TELEVISION Tewkesbury is to feature in two television programmes starting this month. A ten-part serialisation of Philippa Gregory’s books about the Wars of the Roses on BBC 1 will be accompanied by a four-part documentary about influential women in the wars. Part of this was filmed in Tewkesbury Abbey as well as the Bloody Meadow. Michael Portillo’s ‘Railway Journeys’ has also made an arrival in the town. Railway guide Bradshaw apparently referred to the Battle of Tewkesbury (though got the date wrong), so Michael Portillo visited to talk to local experts. The programme was also recorded in the Bloody Meadow, and will be broadcast in January next year.

girls' parents has been fantastic, encouraging the players and the coaches to stick at it. The team practice at Tewkesbury School Sports Centre brilliant all-weather pitch,”said Will Plummer. “Over time the girls settled into their positions with Emily S claiming the keeper’s jersey, a solid hard working defence with Ciara, Niamh, Emily B and Jess. “The midfield built itself on the all round play of Emma, the ever reliable Annabelle and the silky smooth passing skills of Hannah. Beth's box-to-box engine and fearless tackling ably supported the deadly

finishing of striker Ella.” “The going was hard against the more established teams, whose squads had been together for a few years. “But the girls great team spirit was never in doubt, returning week after week to train and play hard, learning new skills and making new friends along the way, said Will. “It has been a tough start, but we're hoping this lays the foundation for us to build on through the spring and summer an in to the 2012-13 season. “We're looking forward to competing in the Colts home tournament on Saturday 1st June and our ambition is to field at least two teams: under-10s and under12s, with the possibility of an under-8s team if we can get the players.” Tewkesbury Town Colts FC has a ‘football for all’ philosophy and welcomes all children from those mad about football to those that simply want to have some fun. TWYNING SCHOOL AT TWICKENHAM On Saturday 25th May Leicester defeated Northampton in the Aviva Premiership Final at Twickenham. Prior to the match fourteen Primary Schools took part in a Tackling Numbers tag demonstration and Twyning School were one of the lucky schools selected. On the 16th April Twyning School’s rugby team, consisting of ten players (seven boys and three girls), entered the Tewkesbury Primary Schools Tag Tournament. Six primary schools entered and despite Twyning being the smallest of these schools they won all of their games and the competition. The children were overjoyed in winning this tournament and when they found out they had been selected to play at Twickenham they nearly exploded with excitement! This was an experience the chil-dren will remember for the rest of their lives. A coach left for Twickenham early Saturday morning with the team and their proud families; the school and Tewkesbury Direct congratulate all the children who took part.

Spring Policing Matters in Tewkesbury Our new sergeant (Ps Henry Wright) was not in a position to provide his first submission this month so Inspector Brian Murnaghan is providing the update on local policing matters this month. It has been a busy month and the arrival of Spring and subsequent good weather coincided with an increase in a number of incidents of assault/anti-social behaviour. Apart from incidents of public order and anti social behaviour we also get called to emergencies involving potentially life changing injuries. Officers are equipped with “Tazers” and these are being utilised more and more often when officers are called to deal with violent or potentially violent incidents. The ability of officer’s to utilize this option has led to a dramatic decease in injuries to officers which is obviously good news. Having said this officer’s are still getting assaulted and we do all we can to minimize this risk. An example of this occurred last month when officers on foot patrol in the early hours in Tewkesbury High Street dealt with aggres-

sive intoxicated customers exiting from a licensed premises. As a result a male assaulted an officer which resulted in a public order situation and extra officers being deployed to the area. Further arrests were made and officers sustained injuries. We will not tolerate this type of behaviour on our streets where the minority cause problems and we will endeavour to ensure that persons responsible for this type of behaviour will have the full weight of the criminal justice system brought to bear on them. We also work closely with licensees to ensure they are aware of their responsibilities in managing their customers. At the time of writing this report the contentious issue of the Badger Cull is forthcoming. Whilst we fully appreciate that opinions are varied regarding this issue we in the Police are a disciplined service and have to ensure that any legal cull is carried out in line with legislation whilst facilitating lawful protest which does not hinder the activity of the cull. Whilst the policing of the cull is being managed from “the centre” we live and work in a predominantly rural area and as such this issue will no doubt be subject of much scrutiny

over the forthcoming summer months. There will also be a high level of press interest regarding this issue. We continue to be proactive and have executed a significant amount search warrants across the policing area. A large percentage of these warrants involve intelligence regarding the possession and supply of controlled substances. In addition other stolen property has been recovered including pedal cycles and cash obtained as a result of committing crime (ie proceeds of crime). We have also seen a number of instances of counterfeit currency being seized so we would advise members of the public to be on their guard when handling bank notes. If you are unsure if you are in possession of a possible counterfeit note you can pop into your local bank or call us at the Police Station. What appeared to be an incident which captured the public’s imagination occurred recently when two members of the public “relieved” a golfer of his golf cart at a

CARTED OFF AND THEN ARRESTED local golf course and drove away on the public highway in the cart. Whilst many people may see the funny side to this type of behaviour these males were heavily intoxicated and driving this cart on main roads in Tewkesbury. They were eventually detained on a main road leading to Ledbury and arrested. We will have to see if the courts see the

“funny side” to their behaviour…..I doubt it. Ps Henry Wright will hopefully supply the next policing update. If there are any policing matters you wish to discuss please contact either myself or one of the team at Tewkesbury Police Station. We are based at Tewkesbury Borough Council offices and have reception staff on duty

during office hours or you can contact use using the x101 number. Thank You. Brian Murnaghan Inspector Tewkesbury Local Policing Area.

Tewkesbury’s Alderman Knight School was officially re-opened last month, after a £6 million building and refitting programme. The ceremony was performed by Olympic gold medallist Katherine Grainger, who also visited the school with her double-sculls rowing partner Anna Watkins last October.

Alderman Knight School has been on the same campus as Tewkesbury School since 1975. In 2006 it was nearly closed due to Government Policy at the time. Since that decision was overturned, the school has gone from strength to strength. Under the guidance of the current Head, Clare Steel, the school has achieved an Outstanding Ofsted inspection in December 2010 and in July 2011 the £6 million new build and refurbishment project started. Alderman Knight is a well-established special school for children aged 4-16 with moderate and additional learning difficulties, complex needs and Autism Spectrum Disorders.

FAMILY FUN AT MITTON A crafty little fellow at Mitton Family Fun Day

The Mitton Family Fun day was held at Mitton Manor Primary school last month. Over thirty stallholders from all over Gloucestershire attended, ranging from crafts to pottery making, plus a bouncy caste and a banana boat! It turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and successful events the school has ever had. The schools stalls raised over £1000 for the school and we estimate that well over 600 people turned out to support us on the day. The Friends of Mitton School would like to give a great big 'Thank You' to everyone involved for making such a great day happen.

Over 30 stalls, and lots of fun for all

RAIL SUPPORT GROUP CLEANS UP

COMPUTER SERVICES

Members and supporters of the Ashchurch, Tewkesbury & District Rail Promotion Group held their latest work party at Ashchurch for Tewkesbury Railway Station last month. They completed the initial clearance of the full length of the garden area donated to them by Network Rail (see photo), as well as finishing clearance of the footpath approach alongside File & Data's fencing, and completing an indepth litter pick of the car park and footpath up to the A46. The group has long wanted to improve the state of Network Rail's footbridge over the railway at Northway and the group at long last have received permission in principle for the community repainting the bridge. They have been awarded a relevant licence and are in the process of agreeing the necessary risk assessment and now await agreement from Network

Rail for delivery of the paint. The latest official usage figures for the station have been released by the Office of Rail Regulation. These show an annual increase of 7.6% from 68,000+ in 2010/11 to 74,000+ in 2011/12. These official figures are, however, more estimates than fact and the group's own footfall counts for the year to March 31st 2013 show actual usage to be slightly in excess of 119,000. Despite the new delay for the Great Western franchise, to October 2015, the group is continuing to push for extra trains, not least for morning commuters and are taking their appeals to the DfT as well as First Great Western. PROBLEMS FACING WILDLIFE The spring and summer months are extremely busy for wildlife rescues throughout the UK and at Vale around three quarters of our total annual casualty intake comes in during the four months from April to July, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. As well as the animals actually brought in for treatment, we also deal with thousands of calls for advice from concerned members of the public. At this time of year a large number of these calls concern fledgling birds in the garden and an ever-increasing number come about because of the domestic cat. Any bird that has been caught by a cat, even if it has no obvious injury, needs to come in for a thorough check over and will also need a course of antibiotics. If they do not receive these antibi-

otics they often develop an infection because of the amount of bacteria present on a cat’s teeth, which in turn leads to septicaemia, invariably resulting in the death of

BREDON LINES UP FUN DAY This year's Bredon Fun Day will take place on Bredon Playing Fields on Sunday 14th July from 12noon - 4pm. The event will have a circus theme this year and the fun will begin with a parade from Bredon Hancocks School at 11.30am, arriving at the playing fields for the opening ceremony at 12noon. Following the success of last year's 'Try 5' there will be a wide range of activities, including sports and crafts for visitors to have a go at. Along with circus themed activities there will also be a bouncy slide, drumming, face painting and many stalls, including jewellery making, books, barbecue, and a tombola. Donations for the tombola can be left at 49 Blenheim Drive,Bredon. Alternatively contact Meryl Falvey who will be happy to collect items. (Tel 01684 773183 or 07770 981454) If you would like to be involved and have spare time to give then why not volunteer to help? Please contact Lucy Donovan for more information on 01684 773292 or email bredon@live.co.

the bird. To help minimise the number of birds that your cat catches, always fit a collar (the quick-release type) and bell as an RSPB study showed that this can reduce predation of birds by 41%. Another common mistake made by people is to assume that an animal seen alone, apparently with no parent with it, has been abandoned or orphaned. Although this is a possibility and each case must be assessed individually, certain mammals are left, sometimes for many hours, while mum goes off to find food. Deer leave their fawns in what they consider to be a safe place e.g. in long grass, and hares give birth to their leverets in shallow dips in the ground, known as forms, where they are often left for long periods of time in between feeds. It is better to seek advice before touching any youngster (unless it is obviously injured) as interfering unnecessari-

ly can result in the animal being abandoned by the parent. Give us a call on 01386 882288 if you need any advice. Wildlife across the UK is in trouble. This is the conclusion of a groundbreaking report published this week by a coalition of leading conservation and research organisations. Scientists working side-by-side from 25 wildlife organisations have compiled a stocktake of our native species – the first of its kind in the UK. The report reveals that 60% of the species studied have declined over recent decades; more than one in ten of all species assessed are under threat of disappearing from our shores altogether. 3,148 species were monitored, of which 60% have declined over the last 50 years. Urban wildlife has also suffered in recent years, mainly because of our desire for neat, paved and decked gardens, with far fewer ‘wildlife-friendly’ areas leading to a decline in invertebrates for animals such as hedgehogs, whose numbers have declined massively over the past 30 years. Read their report at www.wildlifetrusts.org/ publications#state-ofnature The UK’s wildlife really does need your help now, before it’s too late for some species.

Festival will be biggest yet Thirty years on and bigger and better than ever, that is the success story that is Tewkesbury Medieval Festival, writes Peggy Clatworthy. Last year the organisers battled against tremendous odds to keep going when most other events were cancelled due to the weather. This year they are hoping that the only battle on site will be the one between the houses of York and Lancaster. For the first time banners made by local children at a workshop organised by the Roses Theatre will be part of the event. They will be carried by their makers as part of a dragon parade around the site, starting from the Bright Knight tent at 2.00pm on both days of the festival (Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th July). Also new for this year will be the opportunity to try your hands at Medieval skittles, next to the beer tent selling Tewkesbury Festivale, specially brewed for the event by Goffs of Winchcombe. The battle re-enactment takes place at 4.00pm on Saturday. Sunday’s battle is at 3.00pm, with the festival closing at 5.00pm.
