USEFUL PHONE NUMBERS New Brownies make their promise

NEW BROWNIE UNIT FOR TEWKESBURY Last month twenty three excited 7 - 8 year old girls of the new 3rd Tewkesbury Brownie Unit made their Brownie Promise in the Abbey. Also in attendance were two special guests; Councillor Claire Wright Tewkesbury Borough Mayor (who is also the Girl Guiding Tewkesbury Division President) and Gloucestershire's County Girl Guiding President, Mrs Cadbury OBE JP DL. Proud parents, grandparents friends and relatives of the girls were also their to watch the ceremony.

2 - TEWKESBURY DIRECT

The evening started with Brownie Bells, which is the opening ceremony to Brownie meetings. The girls - helped by leaders - then entertained their parents with poem recitals, drama and song. Leader Brownie Joanna Teague then explained to the girls about the meaning of taking their promise. In unison, the girls then took their promise in front of everyone gathered, before receiving their Brownie Promise Badge. Mrs Cadbury congratulated the girls on taking their promise, and praised the formation of the new Brownie unit in the town. Mrs Cadbury said, "It is fantastic to be invited to attend the Brownie Promise Ceremony in such a special location, here in Tewkesbury Abbey". Brownie Leader Joanna Teague then thanked the Rev David Deboys for allowing the unit to take their promise in Tewkesbury Abbey. The girls then went eagerly home with their new badges and big smiles on their faces. If you would like to volunteer and join in with the fun, Brownies and Guides are currently looking for more leaders for all Guiding sections, in Tewkesbury, Winchcombe, Bishops Cleeve and surrounding area. Girl Guiding is the leading charity for girls and young women in the UK, which gives girls and young women space to be themselves, have fun and build friendships. It is supported by 100,000 volunteers. Go to www.girlguiding.org.uk/interested for more information.

Bill Wallace with Taekwondo students in Tewkesbury

SUPERFOOT STEPS IN American martial artist and film star, Bill Wallace, is enjoying a whistle stop tour of the UK, and he stopped off at Tewkesbury last month to inspire local martial art students. Around fifty taekwondo students of all grades from beginner white belt up to black belt rank participated in a two hour training session with Mr Wallace to hone their sparring skills. The event was organised by instructors Clive and Rachael Harrison, who run twice weekly

taekwondo classes from Tewkesbury School Sports Centre. During the height of his fighting career, Bill earned the nick name of ‘Superfoot’ for his amazingly fast kicks clocking up speeds of 60 mph with his left leg. As well a successful career staring film

alongside Chuck Norris in A Force of One, Bruce Lee in LA Street Fighters and Jackie Chan in The protector, he was also a personal trainer to Elvis Presley. Taekwondo is a sport suitable for all age groups, for a free trial please ring Clive on 07976 986439.

Blow away the Christmas Cobwebs Already feeling jaded by the thought of post-Christmas blues? Then cobwebs after Christmas by riding on our local heritage railway. On Boxing Day, then the 27th, 28th, 31st and January 1st, the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway will be running a steam train and a diesel rail car on its line from Toddington. There will be plenty of mince pies available too - if you still have the stomach for them! On the 29th and 30th December there’s a special ‘mixed traffic’ gala when all available steam and diesel locos will be in operation. A great day out for the whole family. TEWKESBURY REMEMBERS Tewkesbury’s citizens gathered on Remembrance Sunday last month to remember members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty. Photographer Jack Boskett was among the crowds at the ceremony to record these solemn moments. Lest we forget.

IT’S BUSINESS AS USUAL AFTER FIRE A spokesman for Croft Farm Water Park, Bredon’s Hardwick, said the recent fire which destroyed a number of caravans in storage had not had any effect on the businesses on site. Praise was given to the Fire Service who spent several hours damping down the blaze and prevented a larger propane gas tank from exploding.

FLORAL EFFORTS RECOGNISED Tewkesbury Town Mayor Christine Danter has paid tribute to businesses in the town who made a special effort during the summer’s Britain in Bloom Competition. Awards were presented at the Town Hall last month to those who produced particularly lovely individual displays. John Councillor Badham said: “Our Mayor has spent some time judging who she thinks has done especially well. “That, of course, is not to say that all the myriad displays have not all been beautiful. She has had the less than enviable task of deciding which ones are best. “This year her eye has focused particularly on Dave Dudley, the Royal Hop Pole, the Caravan Club and the Abbey Tea rooms which are very worthy winners in their particular categories. As a result of the efforts of local businesses, the Tewkesbury in Bloom committee and residents too, the town did particularly well in the regional Britain in Bloom competition.

Town Mayor Chris presents awards to the Caravan Club site

“The judges were very complimentary in what they say, when they awarded us a Gold ribbon for the fourth year,” said John Badham. “They were especially pleased with our flower displays and they were particularly enthusiastic about specific exhibits such as the 1471 bed in Gloucester Road. “ Te w k e s b u r y - i n Bloom is enormously grateful for the support it receives from our sponsors. “We need more, and if

the organisation runs on a shoestring, without our incredibly generous sponsors and donations from friends like the Town Council. we would simply not exist. “The Mayor's awards are a small way of thanking the community and especially local businesses for all they do to make the town so horticulturally beautiful during the summer months. “We believe this is one of the true treasures of Tewkesbury.”

METAL DETECTING with Stuart Borley

ELECTRICAL GOODS ALL

Recently metal detector expert and historical detective, Stuart Borley, found these two Brooches locally. They were not lost by the same person as they are seperated by age by some 1,500 years. The top example is a Roman Fibula which is often associated with wealthy settlements and was used to fasten a cloak or similar clothing. At one time there would have been a pin to fasten it with. The second brooch is more modern dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Originally the wings of the butterfly would have been brightly enamelled with glass which has been lost during its period under the ground.

A BIG DAY FOR TEWKESBURY’S SMALL BUSINESSES The Tewkesbury branch of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is urging everyone in the area to make a big noise for small businesses on Saturday, December 7. For that day has been designated as the UK’s first ever ‘Small Business Saturday’ and the Tewkesbury FSB team would love to see local people do everything they can to help make it a day where the crucial role small businesses play in the economy is celebrated and supported. In America, ‘Small Business Saturday’ has become firmly established as a major national event and last year alone in the US $5.5 billion was spent at small businesses on the day making it an occasion day where ‘thinking small’ led to a big boost for small independent shops and services. The idea to replicate the idea in the UK has the support of all the main political parties and as the UK’s biggest business representation group, the FSB is delighted to be backing this important initiative which ties in with its own ‘Keep Trade Local’ campaign which we have been highlighting in Tewkesbury Direct for many months. On the day itself, Tewkesbury’s MP, Laurence Robertson, will be joining FSB members for a spot of Christmas shopping on the High Street to show his support for local small businesses and on Friday, December 6, Rachel North the new Deputy Chief Executive at Tewkesbury Borough Council will also do a town centre trip with the FSB to help promote the day. They will be helping to highlight the fact that local small business can do everything the ‘big boys’ can do. For instance there is a lot of advertising on TV at the moment for firms offering the printing of personal calendars - well, we have two indie photo shops in town who also offer the same thing so why not use them instead? Crucially, ‘Small Business Saturday’ is not just about retail. There are many other small, independent service, manufacturing, supply and creative businesses which need your support so why not do what you can in the run-up to December 7 to give them all a boost?

䡵 Bagging a bargain....Laurence Robertson MP joined the FSB for a High Street shop last year and visited Amanda Orton at Pretty Special in Church Street. The MP will be visiting shops again on December 7 to support ‘Small Business Saturday’. (Picture by Nick Jones of the Photo Studio).

Small businesses are the lifeblood of our local economy creating jobs, prosperity and enhancing community relationships. Let’s do our best on December 7 to show these firms that we support and value their contribution to Tewkesbury life. You can find out more about what is happening with ‘Small Business Saturday’ at www.smallbusinesssaturdayuk.com and to find out more about the Tewkesbury branch of the FSB go to www.fsb.org.uk/gloswestofengland/branches/tewkesbury. We all know divorce and separation is a horrible thing to go through. More than 230,000 people in the UK get divorced every year, there are no statistics of how many couples separate and is probably at least the same if not more. Many of us have family or friends who have been through a separation or divorce, and we have seen for ourselves the impact it has on families. The divorce process itself is not only stressful but it can leave a longterm legacy, which makes the festive season particularly difficult. What we want at Quality Solicitors Thomson and Bancks is to find the best way for couples to separate in the long-term interests of all family members. Divorce doesn’t have to be devastating. For some people court will sadly be unavoidable. But for many others, by being fully aware of their options, they can make the process less traumatic, reduce the conflict, and importantly reduce the impact on any children they may have. The options offered at Quality Solicitors Thomson and Bancks are not only the traditional lawyer lead negotiation and going to court, but also Mediation and the Collaborative process. John Sherahilo is a trained Mediator and will help to resolve all issues faced by separating or divorcing couples or indeed help on a specific issue. Mediators are neutral and will not take sides and they cannot provide advice but as a lawyer mediator John can provide general legal information within the mediation process. He will meet with you both, together or separately and identify those issues you can’t agree on and help you to try and reach agreement. He is also a trained Collaborative lawyer. In this process each person appoints their own collaborative lawyer and all meet to work things out face to face. Each has the support of their own lawyer and have legal advice. Having the choice of different resolution processes can produce good and cost effective results for clients and their families.

GOOD WINTER ADVICE from Nick Ellicott of Aspray

WINTER MAINTENANCE ADVICE FOR HOME AND BUSINESS Buy an insulating cover for outdoor taps and cover them for the winter. If there is an individual isolator for external taps it is a good idea to switch them off

during cold weather. Ensure that drains, gutters and downpipes are clear of blockages. Overflowing drains can damage to cause and brickwork

foundations, and also damp problems inside the property. open Regularly windows to ventilate your property throughout the winter. Most internal

damp issues are caused by our constant desire to stay warm and dry, but moisture from showers, kettles, cooking and breathing all needs to escape somewhere, or it settles on walls and as windows condensation, and eventually forms damp patches and mould. ventilation Regular prevents this build up.

PUDSEY BEAR A Pudsey Bear party held at Tewkesbury’s Hut raised Scout £350.19 for Children In Need. Organisers wished to thank the following for their help and support, Snapdragon Face Painting, Dave Webb for the bouncy castle, the Orange Pig, Sudeley Castle, Cards and Gifts Magic Land and the Roses Theatre. Next year it is hoped to team up with Stephen Roberts of Red Connies who has also raised money this year for this worthable charity.

POLICE NOTES with Sgt Henry Wright

CHRISTMAS TIPS TO BEAT THE BURGLAR Christmas is almost upon us once again and we will be out buying presents for our family and friends, writes Police Sgt Henry Wright. Unfortunately some of us will be the victims of burglars in the run up to the festive period, burglars have children too and they don't buy presents they steal them from decent honest people.

Keep your Home Safe Follow my tips to keep your home safe this Christmas and New Year. Many of you will be buying expensive electrical gadgets, computers, jewellery or the latest must have accessories. Please make sure that if gifts are placed under your tree that they are not visible from any door or window, give consideration to security marking any large electrical items or bicycles. Please note down any serial numbers from property this will help you get it back if any stolen items are recovered by police. If you decorate you home with festive lights don’t feed the cable through a partially open window this will be an open invitation to the burglar. After Christmas dispose of any packaging very carefully don’t leave it outside to advertise the fact that Santa has brought a new games console. Refuse collections can often change or be delayed so check the sheet from the council or better still have a trip to your local recycling centre. If you use social media don't advertise your Christmas holiday plans many criminals

trawl these sites looking for opportunities to commit crime. Remember to plan ahead cancel your milk and newspapers, get a neighbour to park a second car on your drive if

were involved in an accident and you injured or killed someone the memory will be with you for the rest of your life.

Safer Motoring Following on with the theme of road safety make sure that your motor vehicle is ready for winter check the condition of your tyres and

that the tread is at least 1.6 millimetres around the whole circumference, check the coolant is topped up with anti always thorfreeze, oughly de-ice the windscreen and windows prior to moving off and keep the washer bottle topped up solution. In very severe weather if your journey is essential take a hot drink and a

blanket just in case you get stranded.

Cycling Tips If you’re a cyclist be seen and be safe get good quality lights and check the batteries and make sure the lenses and reflectors are serviceable and clean. Invest in a reflective jacket for cycling or walking to

school in these dark winter mornings. All that is left is for me to wish you and your families a very happy Christmas and all the best for 2014, I hope to see some of you over the festive period. Police Sergeant Henry Wright Tewkesbury Police.

they have one and don’t forget the timers for lights I told you about last month.

Drinking and Driving Many of you will be out at parties over the Christmas and New Year period but can I warn you against the dangers of drinking and driving, I have often been asked the question how much can I drink and still be fit to drive? There is only one safe limit and that is ZERO. If you are going out for a drink leave the car at home and get a taxi, just think of the consequences: a driving ban, heavy fine, loss of employment, difficulty getting the children to school. Even worse than all of these things if you Arrive at your leisure and enjoy our extensive facilities, take afternoon tea between 3-5pm in our restaurant, but leave plenty of time to get ready for our fantastic evening ahead. LOCAL COUPLE DEVISE FLOOD DEFENCES After surviving the devastating floods of 2007, local couple Valerie and Derek Lown decided enough was enough - and devised their own flood barriers to prevent further devestation should the river levels rise so high again. Valerie told Tewkesbury Direct how they came up with their system. “Derek and I live on the Tewkesbury Road at Twigworth and were flooded in 2007 with 4 ft

of water through the house, said Valerie. “As you can imagine this caused a lot of dam-

In August 2010 we marked the opening of the Cooperative Food Store; now we are mourning its imminent loss, writes John Dixon. Three years’ operation is not much to celebrate. Before the Co-op, the shop had operated under the names of Somerfield, Gateway, Finefare – have I forgotten any? Before the planners gave their permissions, it was a garage which nestled into a former brewery. This neo-classical building was an asset to the High Street. Just behind the elegant façade, one can just detect the functional brewery. To the right is that less-than beautiful building, being demolished for a very useful car park. If you have information on any aspect of Tewkesburys history, please contact John Dixon on 01684 294262 or email johnhistory46@btinternet.com

Wishing all pets and their owners a very Happy Christmas

Autumn and Winter visitors At this time of year the wildlife in our gardens and in the countryside changes as many of the bird species we have been seeing regularly leave our shores and migrate south to warmer climates, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. Other birds come into the UK from further north to spend the winter with us, taking advantage of the abundance of food in our hedgerows, trees and gardens. We at Vale Wildlife are always disappointed to see landowners hacking back the hedgerows in the autumn and early winter, as so many birds and mammals rely on the vital food source they contain in the colder weather. Large flocks of redwings and fieldfares can be seen in fields and gardens feasting on berries such as hawthorn and rowan, starlings gather in huge flocks (sometimes hundreds of thousands of individuals) and their fantastic aerial displays performed before going to roost at dusk are well documented. Various species of swans, ducks and geese make the journey to the UK for our winter months and probably one of the most beautiful winter visitors is the waxwing. This is a strikingly colourful bird which gets its name from the small, bright red marks on its wings which look just like spots of sealing wax (see photo above). In the autumn months we also admit a number of birds which you

The vet telephoned us for advice and luckily we were able to put them in touch with a suitable wildlife centre on the south coast. As a postscript to this – we are getting several calls a day about people finding small hedgehogs out in the day. These are usually underweight,

Instructions for a Heatwave by Maggie O'Farrell PB £7.99

This excellent read will take you back to the drought summer of 1976; parched and cracked lawns, clear blue skies and an enveloping heat of discomfort. The reader savours the complex relationships within the Riordan family after Dad, Robert simply disappears. Mother, Gretta becomes steadily more concerned making calls to her eldest daughter, Monica, who is herself involved with new, hostile stepdaughters. Aiofe, the youngest daughter living in New York, is dyslexic and a bit of a dropout. Descriptions of Aiofe's problems with reading are brilliantly observed. The stories around Monica's and Aiofe's falling out are revealed as the novel unfolds. Brother Michael Francis and his wife Claire are having marital problems however he is looking forward to the summer holidays and to spending time with his children, Hughie and Vita, who are beautifully crafted characters in their own right.

The service will begin at 6.00pm, with mulled wine and mince pies being served afterwards. At the invitation of Tewkesbury Town Council the Avon Navigation Trust has given an open presentation on the work they have done at Pershore and Evesham, and the possibility of replicating a service station or ‘safe haven’ in Tewkesbury. 75% of boaters joining the river Avon do so at Tewkesbury but only 10% stay to visit. Avon Navigation Trust is a charitable trust that works in partnership with many other agencies and funds the majority of the maintenance work on the river through boating licences, and matched funding for improvement projects. Chair of the Moorings Committee, Cllr Karen Brennan said, “There are exciting opportunities for Tewkesbury to turn the statistics around to the general benefit of the town. “Volunteers are needed for a plethora of tasks, ideal for anyone who enjoys the great outdoors.” For more information on the organisation, visit the website www.avonnavigationtrust.org

Winter Falls In 2011/2012 over 4,000 people were admitted to hospital in England as a result of falls, writes local pharmacist Peter Badham. 90% of hip fractures are for patients over 50. We know a lot of falls occur in the home, but with the winter weather on the way , there will be an increased incidence of falls outside. There are many risk factors for falls such as the medication the patient takes, their nutritional status, their age and whether they have a history of falls. Fortunately with regards to medication, Community Pharmacy has a solution - a free delivery service of your prescription medication and shopping. Each year whatever the weather throws at us, we make sure everyone gets their medication delivered. Our drivers are amazing, taking on the elements. When we have had bad snow and ice conditions in the past, that has not stopped our drivers. They just walked to each patients house!! You might want to think about setting up a free delivery system for your medication, ready, just in case we do get a bad winter. Peter Badham

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater

Looking back on 2013 - a year of mixed blessings Looking back it has been a year of mixed blessings, says local therapist and counsellor, David Slater. We had not the best of winters and spring but

when summer came it lived up to its name.

Now we are experiencing a mild autumn and wonder what awaits us in the months to come. You may well have had bad patches or known people who have. There have been dreadful happenings all around the word, in particular the recent typhoon in Philippines. As we sum up our year we need to also look ahead and make up our minds to be as positive as we can. Remember taking out your frustrations on others doesn’t end that frustration but giving joy to others gives a boost to your life too. A negative approach to people reaps no rewards but a positive approach on the other hand can benefit everyone. Instead of looking for places to assign any blame its far better to look for chances to cre-

ate value instead. Don’t hold onto a grudge. Free yourself of it and live with more joy and positive purpose. Don’t hold on to the negatives of the year start to plan and build a positive future because it is the future where you will soon be living. Pull the stops out now and see if you can make it the very best it can possibly be. Life is what it is. It is the way that you choose to see it that makes all the difference to the way in which you are able to live it. You can be filled with fear or love. Choose the positive energy of love. It will lift and sustain you even through dark patches. I wish you a Blessed, Happy and Positive Christmas and may 2014 be a positive year for us all. David Slater

Made in Tewkesbury and still working 106 years later This steam powered Popcorn maker was spotted at Cheltenhams sunday carboot sale. It was manufactured by Walkers of Tewkesbury in 1907, a company based in Oldbury Road where the Ambulance station now stands. The next year, the factory burned down and Walker was forced to move his factory for making Fairground Rides to what is now Spring Gardens’ Car Park. The company went bankrupt in 1925, after the death of its founder, Thomas Walker, in 1912. Delightfully decorated, the steam engine not only heats the popcorn but powers a miniature generator to provide a source of electricity. It would have been great to have repatriated it for Tewkesbury but the price tag of £12,500 was a little too much for the writer.

HISTORIC PETROL PUMPS NOW ON DISPLAY SITUATION VACANT

Warners Sales Manager Claire Millar with the old petrol pump

Two Esso Avery Hardoll petrol pumps that were originally installed at Warners Garage at Twyning Green have found pride of place at the Warners Peugeot dealership in Shannon Way. They were installed by current owner, Mike Warners grandfather, Harold Warner in the 1930s. This was opposite the village shop and they remained there until the mid 1960’s. Mike Warner can remember serving petrol from them as a 10 year old and can also remember accepting petrol coupons from people during the Suez Canal crisis. They have been totally refurbished and are now on display in the car showroom. When Harold came back from the 1st World War in 1918 the Lord of the Manor granted him permission to site a petrol pump on Twyning Green for his service during the war.

HUMAN LIBRARY

Everyone understands the principle of the library. A library is a place to find information through the use of books and the Internet. This form of research gives you facts and helps you understand the meaning of the subject. However, the concept of the Human library; although being fundamentally the same; has one key difference. The human as a talking book can not only impart information but can put information into context in a very special and unique way. Children respond to careers in their lifetime are able. MONSTER PARTY AT WATSON HALL ‘Strictly’ Comes to Tewkesbury!!! It’s time to put on your dancing shoes, even if you can’t dance. Tewkesbury is about to go ‘Strictly’ mad thanks to “Zumba with Sue and Kirsty”. If you want to get fit fast, lose those unwanted pounds and have more fun than you can believe doing it, here’s some great news for you. ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ dance stars Natalie Lowe and Ian Waite have teamed up with six time world champion swimmer Mark Foster, a former Strictly contestant and an expert in fitness and conditioning, to produce a unique dance and fitness programme – ‘FitSteps’. They have combined, for the first time, the best known and most popular Latin and Ballroom dances with proven fitness techniques, to develop a dance/fitness programme that is capable of delivering fast fitness results, with a heap of fun thrown in! We take the grace of the ballroom and up tempo latin beats and dance. No partner required but rest assured what you learn in class you can take straight to the ballroom. And for anyone who’s thinking, ‘But I can’t dance’ or ‘I don’t have anyone to dance with’, there’s no excuse, you don’t have to able to dance and you don’t need a partner! You just have to want to get fit and have fun. “FitSteps is a new form of exercise dance class. It’s all dance moves – steps you would learn in a ballroom class. You could take what you learn from FitSteps straight through to a ballroom class and you’d already know the steps.” Ian Waite Over 14 million of us watch “Strictly Come Dancing” every year and we all dream of dancing like Natalie Lowe or Ian Waite so the chance to hit the dance floor, learn proper dance steps plus get fit and make friends is a great idea. “It’s not overly energetic to the point where you’re out of breath – it’s more of a slow burner. We’re teaching technique, the basic Waltz, the basic Cha Cha rhythm so at the end of a 45 minute class you’ll have learned Waltz, Cha Cha, Quickstep, Jive, Paso Doble, Charleston and you’ll have done a warm up and a cool down.” Natalie Lowe And the best news of all is that FitSteps has hit Tewkesbury, Upton and surrounding areas with classes provided by “Zumba with Sue and Kirsty”. Sue says:- As well established Zumba Instructors, Fitsteps seemed the natural addition to our existing class timetable – our people absolutely love ZUMBA® FITNESS, but 3 years on we felt it was time to offer something extra but still keep the dance element and FITSTEPS slots in very nicely. So, whether its ZUMBA® FITNESS or FITSTEPS or both, all you need to do is get in touch with Sue or Kirsty, who are accredited Instructors and book yourself in. Just email sue.zumba@btinternet.com or call Sue on 07708 381310 or Kirsty on 07885 545582 NOW. Don’t miss out, there’s going to be a rush!

Christmas farmers’ and craft market set to showcase local talent A series of farmers’ and craft markets showcasing the area’s finest produce and crafts have launched in Tewkesbury. Following the fantastic success of two held in October and November, the next market will have a festive theme and will take place on 14 December from 9am to 1.30pm on the Abbey Lawns Car Park, off Gander Lane in Tewkesbury. The market will provide residents and visitors with the ideal opportunity to stock up on locally produced food and crafts in time for Christmas, with unique and special gifts on offer from over 40 food producers and craft makers, including handmade chocolates, traditional chutneys, hand-sewn Christmas stockings and glass tree decorations. The series of markets have been organised by Tewkesbury Town Team, in partnership with Grenchurch Markets and are supported by Tewkesbury Borough Council. Town Team Chairman Dan Blake said ‘Getting this market going has been one of the key objectives of the town team and we would like to thank Grenchurch Markets for helping make this possible. “It has been six years since the town has hosted a farmers’ market and it is a very popular

event with both the residents and visitors to the town.” Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Lead Member for Economic Development and Promotion Cllr Dave Waters said: We are delighted to be able to support this event – it’s great to see a successful farmers’ market, which showcases the local talent we have here in our area, back in Tewkesbury.” The market will continue into

next year - so please go to www.VisitTewkesbury.in fo for dates in 2014. For information on booking a stand please contact Grenchurch Markets on 01386 840138.

THE NEW BMW SUPER SAVER ARRIVES Respected prestige car manufacturer BMW have launched the first of their electric car range - the all-new i3. The revolutionary vehicle, which offers zero emissions, was launched in Gloucestershire last month by Cotswold BMW. The model heralds a new era in a premium car package - yet at an affordable price. The BMW i3 is the world’s first premium car designed from the ground up to be powered by an electric drive sys

tem. The result is a vehicle that embodies the German manufacturer’s commitment to driving pleasure without

offering game-changing technology that, through a completely new driving and ownership experience, will revolutionise the way we travel. The BMW i3 is a milestone in automotive history and the future of motoring.” For more details visit www.cotswoldgloucesterbmw.co.uk

BMW i3 Launch at Cotswold BMW compromise. There are two models in the new range - the standard i3 which has a range of 80100 miles, and the i3 range extender which can travel for up to 180 miles. Both have a top speed of 93mph. The car’s electric motor generates an output of 170hp, with a peak torque of 250Nm on demand instantly. This allows the i3 to sprint from zero to 37mph in a mere 3.7 seconds - and zero to 62mph in just 7.2 seconds. A lithium-ion battery gives a range of 80100 miles in everyday driving. This rises by 15% in the Eco Pro mode and by the same again in Eco Pro+. For customers particularly conscious of ‘range anxiety’, the BMW i3 is available with a range extender engine,

powering a generator to maintain the power of the lithium-ion battery at a constant level while on the move. This is performed by a 650cc two-cylinder four stroke petrol engine developing 34hp and mounted immediately next to the electric motor above the rear axle. The system extends the cars range to around 180 miles in day-to-day conditions. BMW i3 models include a three year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty and an eight year 100,000 mile battery warranty. Prices start at £25,680 with the battery included in the price. Andrew Hulcoop, Cotswold Motor Group’ Managing Director, said:”BMW has a history of pioneering progression and has also come

to stand for technical excellence. “With BMW i3 we are
