Freedom camping Is not permitted on the lakeshore. You can find information about where to camp on our website or by visiting Te Urewera Visitor Centre.
Why can’t I freedom camp? Te Urewera is a living entity, she is our ancestor. We know our manuhiri (visitors) want to respect her and this is one way you can do that.
A Te Urewera Manuhiri
Tūhoe relationship with the Te Urewera living systems is ancient, take time to know what that means and how we treat life within Te Urewera. We are the last born of nature’s children, the manu (birds), the rākau (trees) are before us, tikana guides us to do right by that system. Removal of plant life, tree’s and native birds disrespects our efforts for a purposeful connected future. At this time Te Urewera ground-based manu are vulnerable to the untrained dog and other domestic animals. Pet owners, and hunters are responsible, and we wish to create meaningful connections with those wanting to learn with Tūhoe. Designated fire pits are assessable for cooking and warmth at camp sites and huts. Fire bans do occur in the dry peak season, so please keep an eye out. If you are hunting - use firearms carefully. Know where hunting is permitted and respect others who enjoy Te Urewera. Hunting is by permit only.
“You are as you know the last born of nature’s children”
Te Urewera is ancient, a being in and of itself, respected by those longing for care, and responsibility. Tūhoe welcome honest friendships with Manuhiri (Visitors) who enjoy her majestic moods and misty natural cycles.
Treating
Te Urewera
The Care for Nature Standards (Manaaki Te Urewera) serve to inspire all humans to want and choose a pathway benefiting Papatūānuku (Mother Earth). An experience that enhances and connects the human spirit of all cultures to nature herself.
