What I learned from my umbrella!

As someone who makes their living from writing, I often visit places that will fuel the creative part of my brain, such as an art gallery or a museum. So last month I was pleased to spot road signs for the Crafts Alive craft fair at Rodmarton Manor. Run by the Gloucestershire Guild, this event offered a welcome opportunity to visit the private house reputed to be one of the finest Arts and Crafts Movement homes, and I booked a ticket to visit.

Unfortunately, my outing seemed to coincide with monsoon season. As I parked in a muddy field, I was glad I’d had the foresight to bring my ancient polka-dot Cath Kidston raincoat and my favourite umbrella, bought in a French market a decade ago on a school trip with my daughter, and of sentimental value way

beyond its 10 Euro price tag. By the time I arrived at the manor house, my feet were afloat inside my shoes, but the rest of me was relatively dry.

Not wanting to drip on Grade 1 listed floors, I stashed my brolly in the designated bucket beside the admissions desk. I then spent a pleasant hour admiring not only the beautiful arts and crafts on sale, but also the fabric, fixtures and fittings of the Grade I listed manor house. On completing my tour, I returned to the entrance to reclaim my umbrella, only to find it gone.

In an instant, the bubble of pleasure created by my visit burst. How could anyone stoop so low as to steal an old brolly at an event selling items priced at double, triple or even quadruple figures? Surely its patrons could afford their own umbrellas?

By now the sky was blue and the sun was shining, but my mood was dark. As I slunk across to the tea room, I eyed with suspicion anyone carrying an umbrella. I planned to accost them if they were clutching mine.

I knew I should be more philosophical about the incident. I truly believe everything happens for a reason. As I sidestepped puddles and mudslides, I tried to offset my loss against what I had gained from my outing: creative inspiration and, more prosaically, the start of my Christmas shopping.

I decamped to the tearoom in the stable block. Fortified by fresh coffee and a delicious peanut butter cookie, I emerged feeling more positive. At heart, I’m an optimist really. So, before leaving the fair, I’d return to the scene of the crime, just in case my AWOL umbrella had turned up.

Dear reader, I’m very pleased to tell you that it had. I don’t know whether someone had mistaken it for their own and returned it on realizing their error, or whether a chancer had borrowed it during the worst of the downpour. But I do know this: among the many other benefits of my day out was the restoration of my faith in human nature.

It’s almost the end of September where has this year gone!

Summer passed us by and Autumn is here. Ladies change your wardrobe ready for the cold and wet weather.

Despite the bad weather eight Tetbury Lions turned out on Friday the 12th and Saturday the 13th of September to shake buckets collecting money towards the new X-ray machine at Tetbury Hospital. As we go to print we are not able to ascertain how much money raised but we will in the next edition.

Friday the 19th of September will be another of our annual quizzes and the numbers are extremely encouraging. A lot of our regulars and quite a few new quizzers We appreciate all supporters. It’s thanks to Lion Alan Greenway for giving up his time to compile the quiz and be quiz master.

We have expanded our delivery of the Tetbury Advertiser into Malmesbury and

although early days we are receiving very positive comments. In Tetbury we deliver 4.800 copies mostly delivered by members of the Lions club.

We have given the Goods Shed financial help with putting solar panels on their roof.

£1000 has been given to SWR for furnishing a new room. A well worth donation.

On the 27th of September a number of Lion members and Tetbury residents visited Concorde, Bristol.

On the 2nd of October there will be a visit to the A417 Missing Link alteration on the Air Balloon roundabout. Having been myself earlier in the year it is a visit not to be missed. You are given a very interesting talk together with a video followed by walk onto the platform to view the work taking place.

The 4th of October is the Fun Day Treasure Hunt. Start time is 1.30 pm at the Goodshed and finish 3.00 pm at the Priory for tea.

The 10th of October sees the Tetbury Lion’s Charter Night, which will be held at The Great Tythe Barn. Tickets are £55 to include a Procecco reception followed by a three course dinner and ending with dancing to the Saga Louts, a 60s,70 and 80’s band. If you remember that played at the Christmas Switch On last Christmas, so good people were dancing in the street. It starts at 7.00 pm and finishes 12.45am.

Towards the end of the year we will announce next years programme of events.

Our next meeting is Wednesday the 1st of October at 7.30 pm. Please feel free to join us you may consider joining us but you are under no obligation.

started…

…to carry out the jobs scheduled to do at this time of year, for example: a roll out of replacing some of the Box trees we have growing throughout the town, a lot of which have been affected this year by Box Caterpillar. We’ll be replacing the Box with ‘Ilex Crenata Caroline’ cones. These look and grow very similar to Box but

without the inherent attraction of the Box Moth or other potential problems such as Box Blight, both of which can have a devastating effect.

We had already started to strip the beds of summer bedding plants by the end of August as the geraniums had fared so poorly due to the hot dry conditions of this past summer. However, we were really pleased to see how many perennials and shrubs had actually managed to survive their ordeal, even if they did look a bit scorched and weary! Unfortunately, to

Our plans to add more sustainable planting to all the beds, which will be less likely to succumb to heat and drought, are already underway and we’ll be adding a lot more bulbs to improve the spring display for 2026.

When you think of a church in Tetbury it is surely the wonderful church of St Marys’ which springs to mind.

But did you know there are other churches in the area? Tucked away on The Green is St Michael’s Catholic Church; in the Chipping is Christ Church, a Methodist/ United Reformed Church; and meeting in various places in the area is the Five Valleys Christian Fellowship.

These four churches form what is known as TACT, Tetbury Area Churches Together. In each church you will find faithful Christians seeking to follow the way of Jesus Christ, we just happen to worship in different places, in different ways. The four churches work together in many local projects such as Holiday@Home and Messy Church. Where possible we share our resources, work together and occasionally worship together.

At Christ Church (Methodist/URC) you will receive a warm and friendly welcome whatever your background. Our hope is that you will experience a love of God

and of neighbour during your time with us. We worship on Sundays at 10.30 am singing traditional and contemporary songs, praying together, reading the Bible and listening to a talk which helps us to understand what being a Christian means in today’s world. If you would like to chat about a particular issue please contact Rev Wendy Tucker, minister@ christchurchtetbury.co.uk, phone 01285 653655, www.christchurchtetbury.co.uk or come along to Coffee Pot on Wednesdays from 10.30 am -12.00 pm.

Five Valleys Christian Fellowship is a small, growing church of all ages and backgrounds across the Five Valleys community areas, who try to live as a church family in the areas where we live. Everyone’s included, and everyone matters. Our church services are informal including worship, teaching and kids’ ministry.

We meet at various places including the Minchinhampton Community Hub, the Long Table in Brimscombe and also in each other’s homes. For more information please contact Steve, our Pastor on 07908 192552, email office@fivevalleys. org or visit www.fivevalleys.org or www. facebook.com/FiveValleys

Staying connected to the vine…

What a wonderful celebration we had on the 31st of August as we welcomed our new Rector, The Revd Sarah Heywood. The church was filled with nearly three hundred people who turned out to meet and greet Sarah and to pray for her as she begins her new ministry in the Tetbury Benefice. Look out for her around the town as she makes new connections with you all.

As I write this in early September, I am just about to go on holiday to France, connecting with people from different countries and walking in the hills watching the harvest in the vineyards of Burgundy which will have just begun. I love watching the workers painstakingly gathering the bunches of grapes by hand, throwing them into baskets on their backs before offloading them on to a trailer. I’ll also enjoy the odd tasting!

In the Bible there are many references to wine, vineyards and bearing fruit but in John chapter 15 Jesus states “I am the vine, you are the branches”. We are reminded to remain strong, fruitful Christians, staying connected to Christ, that no branch can bear fruit by itself, it must remain connected to the vine, to be attached to Jesus through prayer, reading scripture and Eucharistic worship in order to obtain fully the joy and freedom, the new wine, which Christ alone offers.

This month at St Marys’ we will be celebrating our own Harvest on Sunday the 12th of October at 10.00 am, giving thanks to God for all that has been provided, not just in the fields but in our lives. The service will be followed by coffee and then a Bring and Share lunch. This will be a chance to connect with one another.

Do join us if you are able – all are welcome. It will also be an opportunity to say farewell

to one of our retired priests, the Revd Peter Hyson and his wife Hilary Rowland (former churchwarden) who are leaving us for pastures new. We are so grateful for Peter’s active ministry at St Marys’, particularly during the vacancy, as well as his wonderful Murder Mystery plays! We hope he and Hilary will stay connected to us via the powers of the internet.

As the season of Remembrance approaches, our thoughts are turned to those we love and see no longer. Our service of All Souls will be held on Sunday the 2nd of November at 6.00 pm. If you

would like any other names to be read at this service, please do let the church office administrator know and she will add the names to the list. The service is quiet and contemplative and held in the beautiful stillness of the candlelit church of St Marys’ – a chance to connect with God, our great comforter in all our sadness.

You can stay connected with all our news by receiving our weekly newsletter – just contact Nikki Ind on 01666 500088.

Every blessing

Ashley’s talk

‘The Imagery of Queen Elizabeth I’ was interesting and thought provoking.

The talk challenged us to ask ourselves how we see Queen Elizabeth I in an historical context and how we picture her as a person. Records for the time are few and not always totally reliable. We do know that Elizabeth was excluded from Court and rarely acknowledged by her father, Henry VIII, and that as third in line to the succession she did eventually become Queen. She reigned for forty five years. During that time England was almost permanently at war with Ireland or Spain. The defeat of the Spanish Armada is the most memorable event in her reign, but how involved in that was she? A lot has been made of her title The Virgin Queen, but marriage was

impossible because all Englishmen were below her social status and a foreigner would have expected to become King. Thus, Elizabeth became the last Tudor. Over the centuries, much of her life has become legend rather than reality and historians have changed their thinking on Elizabeth and the Tudors.

Can we picture Queen Elizabeth I? To help us, we were treated to a slide show of many portraits from 1546 to 1603-4, and a photograph of her head on coins. During her reign Elizabeth is thought to have sat for artists only five times, therefore portraits must have been copies. She was thirteen in the first portrait, painted in 1546, and appears young, slim and pretty, apart from a large nose.

Portraits when she was Queen all show her looking much younger than she was; most show a large hook nose and a long neck much like her mother’s. Only in the 1590s was a slightly older queen shown, and this image was used until her death.

History of Tetbury Society

So even portraits, like today’s airbrushed photographs, are far from a true likeness; they were all a glorified version of reality. We should also remember that most people would never have seen the Queen, a portrait of her or even on a coin.

Since the advent of films in 1912 and later television, much has been made of Queen Elizabeth I. Plots seem to concentrate on her abandonment as a young princess, her romantic entanglement with the Earl of Essex, her treatment of Mary Queen of Scots and the defeat of the Spanish Armada in the Channel. Looking at the slides of various actresses representing Elizabeth, we noticed costumes more in 20th than 16th century fashion. Glenda Jackson in Elizabeth R in 1971 appeared more realistic in face, hair, figure, age and clothing than most, but she represented the image that most of us have been presented with from childhood.

As Roger suggested, this is more legend than reality. After questions, Roger was warmly thanked by Jane.

Our next meeting is at 7.30 pm on the 2nd of October, when Jon Maisey will talk on ‘The Windrush Exploration an update’. For further information please see our website: www.tetburyhistory.com or contact Jane on 01666 504196.

is a tennis club in Tetbury!

We are a little bit hidden away but please do seek us out and come along for a game as we are always open to new members and are friendly. We can be found at the Sir William Romney School courts in summer on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and all year round on Sunday mornings starting at 9.30 am. Tennis is a fun way to keep fit and meet people.

The club has over forty members and many of them are active throughout the year. During the season we hold three club tournaments with a variety of formats for all club members. There are often opportunities to socialise following Sunday club sessions and we hold an end of season dinner. The courts are available by arrangement to all members after school hours and during weekends and holidays.

The club has a lively and enthusiastic tennis coach, Tayte Nyahawa, who runs club coaching sessions as well as individual coaching and he can be contacted by email at t8.coaching@gmail.com or WhatsApp on 07539 133108.

We play on the three blue and green hardcourts and the clubhouse is the building adjacent. There is a club web site showing the latest news, photos and details of upcoming events and the address is www.tetburydolphinsltc.co.uk.

Tetbury Hospital Announces Major Upgrade to X-ray Facilities to Enhance Patient Care.

Tetbury Hospital Trust is pleased to announce the launch of an exciting programme of work beginning at the end of October 2025 to upgrade our X-ray system with cutting-edge technology that delivers highresolution imaging. This investment reflects our ongoing commitment to providing the highest standard of diagnostic care to our community.

As part of the upgrade, we will also be reconfiguring access to the X-ray room to ensure improved accessibility for all patients requiring imaging services.

During the renovation period, our Minor Injuries and Illness Unit (MIIU) will remain fully operational for injuries and illness. However, patients requiring an X-ray will be directed to a neighbouring

MIIU centre for imaging and may return to us for continued care. Alternatively, patients may choose to receive their full treatment at another unit.

The programme is expected to run for approximately 16 weeks with a planned reopening in February 2026. We will continue to share progress updates via our website and social media channels.

If you are unsure about where to go or what services are available, please contact our MIIU team directly for guidance.

We appreciate your understanding and support as we work to enhance our facilities for the benefit of all patients.

Together with the Friends of Tetbury Hospital, we extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who supported

our X-ray fundraising campaign. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, we have successfully raised over £135,000 over the past 18 months, bringing us closer to completing this vital upgrade to our imaging services.

We are still fundraising for our X-ray upgrade, so if you would like to support us, it is not too late to donate using our X-ray campaign button at www. friendsoftetburyhospital.co.uk.

We are here for you!

GT Talks. The concept is straightforward: we invite a speaker to speak for 20 - 30 minutes or so on an environmental or sustainability topic, and then there is a time for those present to discuss what they’ve heard and what it means to them. There are opportunities to ask the speaker questions and to clarify any matters that are confusing.

September’s event featured James Milner, of Wild Hydrogen, a local company that is developing a way to generate energy in a carbon-neutral manner from agricultural residues and waste streams, while also capturing any carbon dioxide produced in the process. Those attending the event

learned what this could mean for a carbonneutral Tetbury. Look out for future events on our website, Facebook and Instagram pages. Feel free to suggest ideas for topics you’d like to have covered as well.

Growing Renewable Energy

A recent survey by Friends of the Earth found that 8 in 10 Brits would support the UK generating more energy by expanding its renewable energy infrastructure. This proportion included majorities of supporters of various political parties not normally associated with green issues, including Reform. The survey was timed to remind the government about its commitment to publish a revised climate plan. The survey also endorsed using British products to create renewable energy from wind, solar, biowaste, or water as well as expanding training and job opportunities in green energy production. Britain’s green economy already supports nearly one million jobs and

Greening Tetbury

grew by 10% last year, suggesting there is plenty of potential for more.

In the survey, 78% of people backed those responsible for pollution, such as fossil fuel companies, paying more to help fund environmental action. There was also majority support for improving bus services (80%), government support to help lowincome households insulate their homes (77%), and measures requiring landlords to ensure rental homes meet minimum energy efficiency standards (84%).

Off the back of what will probably be the hottest summer ever recorded in the UK, with the problems of drought, water shortages, and wildfires, it should be no surprise that there is an appetite to do whatever it takes to adapt to a more unpredictable climate future.

off, a big thank

you to the ladies of Coventry Building Society…

…who took on a 10k sponsored walk at the weekend raising funds towards our Solar Panel appeal – they just about managed to complete the course before the Heavens opened and the rain came pouring down –thank you for a valiant and generous effort.

We are needing to raise £6,000 to complete

our target of £25,000 to enable us to reduce our carbon footprint as well as our running costs, so all and any help very gratefully received. Each panel costs £200 and if you are able to support this appeal then please contact Kathryn Limoi on 01666 505496 or email office@tetburygoodsshed.co.uk –thankyou in advance.

The other evening the hall was packed to listen to our President and founding Trustee Will Cook as he told us how he led a group of amazing Tetbury Volunteers to come together and turn a run-down old goods shed into one of the best loved art centre in the area.

A native Tetburian, he has been involved with the rail lands since the project started in the 1990s after chatting to the then Prince of Wales! He was one of the original Trustees when the Trust was formed in 2000 and was the Chairman from 2013 to 2017 leading the Goods Shed renovation project to turn the building from a derelict wreck into the beautiful arts centre that we have today. During this time Will did a lot of the actual physical work on the project using his carpentry skills as well as labouring with his amazing side kick and all round handyman Grayham Cleaver. Since stepping down as Chairman Will has been the great driver in getting the café started and then making it into a much loved and popular venue for dog-walkers, mothers, children and anyone who loves the park lands. He was also instrumental in bringing to Tetbury and renovating the Goods Shed’s railway carriage. Not sure where we would be without him!

Looking ahead then October brings a wide range of entertainment and events to the Shed including our Wool Fair on the 12th – following on from a very well received launch last year there will be a wide range of exhibitors, some real sheep to meet and workshops in our train carriage. For more information about this and everything else, check out our advertisement and visit our website: www.tetburygoodsshed.co.uk.

You might think the Men’s Shed movement began with a bloke, a beard, and a bandsawbut surprise!

The first shed was started in 1993 in Goolwa, South Australia, thanks to Maxine Chaseling, a community nurse who noticed that retired gents were starting to resemble their garden sheds: full of tools, but rarely opened. Fast forward a few decades and the idea has spread across the globe. Today, there are thousands of sheds from Adelaide to Aberdeen, with over 1,200 in the UK alone and more in development, the movement has evolved to welcome people of all genders and ages, while still honouring its roots in male wellbeing.

We are continually expanding our focus and resources on Health and Wellbeing matters for all Community Shed users and the wider community. We’ve seen the positive impact first-hand that Sheds have had on men and we recognise there’s even more we can do. The Tetbury Men’s Shed is where you’ll find help guides, resources and advice on a range of mental and physical health topics.

Last month, we invited any women who might be interested, to come along for an informal chat to see if there would be support for extending our membership.

It was such a pleasure to welcome the women who joined us on September 5th for our informal meet-up - we really appreciated the ideas, feedback, and good company. Thanks to their input, we’re excited to start planning a few Friday and Saturday sessions at the Community Workshop, including:

An Introduction to Woodturning Building a Raised Garden Planter Crafting Christmas Decorations

Tetbury Men’s Shed

If any of these sound like your kind of fun, events and dates will be announced here next month, so watch this space. Whether you’re curious, creative, or just keen to connect - we’d love to have you along.

Our workshop is located at the Goods Shed next to the free car park and a few yards from disabled parking spaces. Larkhill Vineyard

At the end of July Probus members had the opportunity to visit one of Tetbury’s best kept secrets: - the Larkhill Vineyard. Situated on the Cirencester Road just before leaving Tetbury the vineyard is behind an imposing private residence.

About twelve years ago the owners decided to fulfil their ambition to make their own wine so planted some vines. Initially this was on quite a small scale but it was not long before more vines were planted and the winery became established. Today, grapes are grown which are sent to a nearby winery to make very fine white and sparkling wines. Recently this labour of love has been rewarded with a highly sought-after prestigious silver medal.

Members were interested to learn of the process, which is not without its hazards, as nature can throw the whole operation into jeopardy when disease, pests or inclement weather may ruin the crop. Patience and diligence is required and a somewhat stoical attitude to cope with these difficulties.

Following the initial discussion members were taken into the vineyard to see for themselves the meticulous lines of vines planted automatically by a specially designed machine. A tasting session followed, sampling several different wines. This proved, without any doubt, that the produce from Larkhill Vineyard is of the highest quality!

The Wilts and Bath Air Ambulance

This was the subject of the next meeting when the vital and life-saving work of this organisation was described. The concept of rescuing ill or injured members of the public and transporting patients to medical facilities by air was developed following the first world war. Nowadays the concept is to bring highly sophisticated and skilled medical treatment to the patient to stabilise the condition of the casualty before being transported to hospital. This saves not only time but also considerably improves the

chances of the patient’s recovery.

State of the art helicopters and criticalcare cars with highly skilled pilots or drivers accompanied by highly trained paramedics is the essence of the operation. The whole process is co-ordinated from a new base near Devizes. This has not only a sophisticated control room but also a state-of-the art training facility which can simulate many different scenarios. Cardiac and other medical emergencies are the most common reason for assistance, followed by road traffic accidents, falls and then sporting injuries.

All this is funded entirely by private donations

and some corporate sponsorship (there is no government money). With annual costs of four and a half million pounds (£4-5,000 a day!) this requires an enormous effort by many volunteers working tirelessly to raise these essential funds.

History of the Hercules

Our final meeting in August was a talk about one of the world’s most important transport aircraft, ‘The Hercules.’ This iconic aircraft is still an essential component of many of the world’s armed forces and has been used extensively throughout the world in several major armed conflicts as well as other international crises. produced in 1956, and still being built today by the US Lockheed Corporation, it is the longest serving continuously produced miliary aircraft in the world.

Despite its fundamental importance, the RAF no longer has any Hercules Aircraft in its squadrons. This decision made purely on economic grounds has and will continue to be regretted as conflicts and disasters throughout the world need its vital transport role.

The end of the summer and the return to school…

…now seems like a very distant memory as the signs of autumn are visible everywhere; the nights are drawing in; leaves of every hue carpet the ground, and the Tetbury Community Choir are busily rehearsing for their Autumn Cheer concert at the Goods Shed on Friday the 10th of October. The proceeds of this event will be split between two local charities – Tetbury Area Youth and Community Trust (TAYCT) and The Goods Shed. Both charities make significant contributions to our community, and we are glad that we can support them with what we hope will be a fun and enjoyable evening. Further details of the event can be found in the accompanying advert and on our website www.tetburycommunitychoir.co.uk

We have been enjoying practising the song list for Autumn Cheer since the end of our Holiday at Home concerts in August. The programme is an eclectic mix of retro and modern pop songs, the ever-popular Sound of Music medley and some traditional favourites. There will also be readings and piano playing as well. We are hoping there will be the usual enthusiastic participation that we have come to expect from our wonderfully supportive audiences.

We have been fortunate to be able to welcome some new members over the past few weeks, but we can never have too many members so if you are interested, please come along and see if you think you might like to add to our voices. You don’t have to audition you can just sit where you think you fit best. The first two sessions are taster sessions so there is no charge and thereafter it is £5 per session, or you can pay termly and get 2 sessions free. We are a very relaxed group and there is usually something that causes raucous laughter at some point in

the evening. Our rehearsals are in Christ Church Hall at 7.00 pm on the 1st Tuesday and 2nd 3rd and 4th Thursday of each month. Have a look at the website for details www.tetburycommunitychoir.co.uk.

…after gaining most points overall in the friendly competitions that are traditionally part of the annual Group meeting that was hosted by Kemble & Ewen in late August. The theme of the competitions was chosen to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the ending of WW2. Besides the traditional posy category members were challenged to re-create a war-time recipe for a tea loaf using traditional ingredients (no eggs and certainly no modern baking spreads). The evening also included a light meal made by Kemble and Ewen members

August is the one month when we don’t have a Monday evening meeting, instead we arrange an outing which this year (as was reported in the September issue of The Advertiser) was to Sudeley Castle, but it was back to our normal date – the second Monday of the month – for our September meeting. The idea of trying out Chair Yoga was obviously popular as we had a good ‘turn out’ for the session led by Sophia Downes, a local instructor, who took us through breathing exercises and a series of gentle movements. A couple of our members, who clearly are fitter than the rest of us, put us to shame with quite how limber they are, but generally we did not embarrass ourselves and everybody

clearly enjoyed the evening. There were a few ‘creaks,’ but we are putting that down to The Goods Shed chairs.

We were able to welcome a couple of guests to the meeting and this really is a good way to see if the WI is for you without making a commitment to a full year’s membership. We do welcome members from Tetbury

and the surrounding villages and we’d love to see you. Our meetings are a mix of activities -we’ve tried Tai Chi as well as Chair Yoga and we’ve practised Circus skills – and speakers who have presented subjects varying from spying in the American Civil War to CPR and the use of defibrillators.

Alongside the monthly meetings we have smaller interest groups that regularly meet such as the Book Group, the Craft Group, the Walking Group and the Garden Group and groups such as the Sunday Lunch Group, the Opera and Ballet Group and the Gin Group that meet less often.

We have a monthly coffee morning at The Snooty Fox, when members can meet for a ‘catch up.’ The October date is Monday the 27th at the usual time of 10.30 am. The Walking group is not as strenuous as it may sound as we walk to The Trouble House every Thursday morning along the newly resurfaced Tetbury Trail for coffee and members can join us just for coffee if they don’t want to walk.

Our next monthly meeting will be on Monday the 13th of October at 7.30 pm at The Goods Shed when we are planning a light harvest Supper, a quiz and a local speaker.

COX & HALL LTD

Back to the golden days of rock ‘n’ roll! In September, forty seven of us…

… travelled to Malvern Theatres to see ‘The Buddy Holly Story.’

Growing up in the 1950s and 60s, we defied our parents to listen to this new rough and raw rock’n’roll music. This belonged to us, our generation and now, a quarter of the way through the next century, we remember the songs – and (most of) the words – but although we may not have the same fluid moves, our bodies retain some kinetic memory of how to groove to the music. And by the end, the audience got to its feet and gave it some!

The golden age of Rock ‘n’ roll began in 1956, and the following year Buddy Holly and the Crickets signed up with Norman Petty (father of the late Tom Petty who guided their career). Norman said ‘I let him go his own way. You don’t create talent. It’s there.’ Buddy created the ‘Tex Mex’ sound based on the jangle rhythmcum-lead guitar solos, best known from

the introduction to ‘That’ll be the day.’ He became a major success, firstly in the UK, and later in his native America.

The story was narrated by a succession of American ‘radio announcers’ of the day, tracking the group’s success along with stars such as Ritchie Valens (‘Donna’) and ‘The Big Bopper’ (‘Chantilly Lace’). On the 2nd of February 1959, Buddy chartered a plane to get them all to the next gig in Minnesota. The plane came down in wind and snow and all three were killed. Don McLean wrote his song ‘American Pie’ to commemorate the tragedy. ‘The day the music died.’

But it did not die and we were not sad for long because the curtain rose again and they all came back to sing and play to us with love for the music, affection for Buddy and us, their ever youthful audience, who had lived through it all.

We had a great afternoon and a very cheerful group of people got back on the coach, as you can see from the photos which Dan our driver took of us all. Music vividly evokes memories and lives on long in our hearts and minds after much else is forgotten. And we are thankful for it.

September has been about getting to know the new children who’ve joined us, welcoming back children returning to us, and we’ve been focusing on everyone settling in. The children quickly get used to our routines like circle time, singing and snack time. Mid way through the morning, adults and children all sit together for a healthy snack, children are encouraged to try new foods and it’s a great opportunity to chat about the day so far. The children love to help with little jobs like wiping tables, tidying away toys, sometimes even washing up their plates and cups. We have garden play whatever the weather, so with

new starters we see our welly stand and waterproof hooks fill up again quickly. As we move into Autumn we are always on the lookout for natural resources for the children to explore, so if you’re out on walks we’d love pine cones, conkers, pretty autumn leaves, sunflower and other seed heads or anything else interesting you’re able to drop in to us.

some puzzles or even sharpen colouring pencils! If you ever have an hour to spare we’d love to hear from you, please drop us an email or give us a call (contact details below).

Most of our sessions are full at the moment but If you’re looking for a playgroup space for your child for the future, you’re welcome to make an appointment to come in and look around, please email us at tetburynurseryplaygroup@ eygloucestershire.co.uk or give us a call on 01666 504855.

Tetbury Nursery Playgroup Team

…with a closing Gala Day on Sunday the 21st of September. Following a friendly game of bowls the membership were treated to a buffet provided by the Chairman, Ladies and Men’s Captains and Club Captain.

There was time to reflect on a successful season with a great offering of games provided for the various levels of ability.

The Club has two men’s teams playing in the South Cotswolds leagues, a men’s Sunday league and the Ladies playing one team in the Corinium League and also a team in the Stroud Valley Ladies Triples.

For those wanting a more social game of bowls the Club plays midweek and weekend friendly matches against many clubs around the area, both at home and

Tetbury Bowls Club

away. The Club runs in house competitions with the winners being honoured at the Club’s Presentation Dinner being held on Saturday 25 October at the Club.

This year the Club introduced an informal Friday night roll up for those wanting to have a friendly game of bowls or for members of the public to try their hand at the game. This proved to be popular and will be continued in 2026.

New for 2025 is a competition between Tetbury Bowls Club and Cam Bowls Club. Each Club enters two rinks of men (4 men to each rink) two rinks of Ladies (4 Ladies to each rink) and one mixed rink (two Ladies and two men) making a total of twenty players from each Club. This year the match is to be played at Tetbury and will be at Cam in 2026. The result will be published in next month Tetbury Advertiser.

In its third year of forming the Junior section had a successful season with some Juniors progressing to play with adult members in friendly matches. They also enjoyed a Juniors Closing Gala with the winners and runners up of the Mini Bowlers and Junior Shield competitions being recognised. Our photographs shows some of the Junior bowlers sporting their newly acquired Club shirts that were kindly donated by the Feoffees.

Whilst the bowling green is “put to bed” in September life at the Club goes on through the winter. Various projects are planned for the winter with the biggest project being a refit of the kitchen. The cost of this is being met by two successful fundraising events. There was a Race Night in early summer and more recently a well organised and attended auction. A big thank you has to go to the many local organisations and businesses that supported the event with donations of items for auction.

Socially the Club has numerous events planned with the start of the bingo evening on Fridays. Also on Fridays we have monthly quiz nights which are promoted through the Club’s website.

September started off with the annual historic Beating of

the Bounds…

…and presentation of the accounts and work of the Feoffees and Thirteen. We were delighted with the number of friends old and new, who took the time to come with us on this circular walk of the town, and to be able to welcome our new Rector the Revd. Sarah Heywood, who led the prayers and hymns. Our thanks go to Revd. Heywood, Feoffee Jim Pearce for leading this walk, Pam Bird, who provided a welcome refreshment stop in her beautiful garden halfway around and to the members of the Thirteen who organised the coffee and tea once everyone was back at The Market House. If you missed us this year, look out for the date next year – this always takes place in September and is a great way to learn about our very special Town.

We are pleased to advise that plans to install a defibrillator at The Market House are almost complete and soon we will have another important, lifesaving piece of equipment in the town centre.

Finally, many of you will have seen that we have resurfaced our land at Combers Mead on London Road, to provide additional private parking spaces, joining our spaces at the bottom of Gumstool Hill and The Chipping Car Park. These are currently all let, however, if you would like to join our waiting list, please contact us via our website.

What a brilliant summer we have had…

…and what a successful Summer exhibition over the Bank Holiday! The raffle prize of an original Phil Biggs watercolour was won by a lucky person from Neath. We have our workshop with Mark Warner in October using acrylics to paint lively landscapes and meetings on the first Wednesday of each month now with artist demonstrations.

If you are interested in joining us please

We have had a very busy summer at the museum.

It has been wonderful to meet so many people and show them the collection and the old station and courthouse. I think our

favourite thing is to see lots of children having fun in the museum.

The museum was a part of a national book adventure trail which is always good for getting children and their parents in and looking around the museum to fill in the free activity sheet. We would like to thank the Yellow Lighted Bookshop for helping us to make it extra special and for donating a signed copy of the latest Grimwood book for us to raffle.

The museum took part in Heritage Open Days and as the theme this year was architecture we brought out the plans of the building from 1883 to show visitors.

By the time you read this we would have had our first ever event - Crime Lab Day - down at the Goods Shed in September. Much hard work by all the volunteers has gone into making this a great success. Many hours have been spent on the research, planning and training, and working with other community groups on the event. We hope that you may have stopped by and enjoyed the activities. Speaking of events we are excited to have the return of Nick Brunger and more spooky tales and magic. He will be doing a show in the courtroom on Friday the 10th of

October at 7.30 pm and tickets are available on Eventbrite: shadowstories.eventbrite.

A highlight of August was the Annual Afternoon Tea (preceded by a shortish local walk).

It was attended by thirty-five members, friends and family who enjoyed the tea offerings in Rob and Helen’s garden. About £550 was raised for Breast Cancer Now via donations for the tea and Rob’s homemade preserves – the mix of socialising and fundraising was well worthwhile.

Our final August walk was a late schedule change resulting in a walk from Amberley descending to the Nailsworth valley. Of course what goes down must come up meaning a good climb back to lunch at the Black Horse. September’s walks covered a mix of areas. The first was a circuit from Oakridge Lynch including paths new to

everyone and a warm welcome at The Butchers Arms afterwards. We had an “H+2Ds” walk, taking in Hinton, Dyrham and Doynton and a new pub to lunch test. The last two September walks were local but provided contrast – a flattish walk from Tetbury including the Estcourt estate and the last testing our uphill stamina on a walk ascending Selsley Common.

October will see us visiting the picturesque environs of Castle Combe (we won’t be moving as fast as cars at the Castle Combe racing circuit), two more local walks – one from Chavenage Green and one near Malmesbury the latter with the option of an

Tetbury and District Footpath Group

Italian lunch (appropriate given part of the walk follows the Roman Fosse Way). The final walk in October starts from Sherston and goes through Luckington (great opportunity to visit their very interesting Church) and to hear about Luckington/MI6 and World War II.

Details of our Walks Programme and other information can be found at https://www. tetburywalkers.co.uk. As always, we continue to aim for a mix of types of walks some starting from Tetbury itself and some slightly further afield (lift shares are easily arranged). New members are always welcome

Tetbury First Scouts

A message from our new Group Lead Volunteer.

“My name is Chris Milton-Clark and I am excited to join Tetbury Scouts as Group Lead Volunteer. With three children in Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts, I am passionate about helping young people thrive. My background includes chairing St Marys Playgroup, developing its Forest School, and working locally in Aerospace. I look forward to helping our Scouts grow, learn, and enjoy new adventures.”

Strategy

The Scouts attended Strategy, a multiactivity challenge hike with over thirty different activity bases spread over threethousand-acre site. At each base, they earned points by completing activities and had to plan the most lucrative route to maximize their score. They pitted their wits, physical stamina, mental prowess, and Scouting Skills against three hundred and twelve other teams. Our two teams came in at one hundred and seventh and one hundred and thirty eighth place.

Evolution

The Cubs attended the Evolution event in

Cirencester Park alongside one thousand other Cubs and Brownies from across the country. The whole weekend was packed with activities, and we had three teams competing in the main event. They spent the day navigating themselves around fifteen-acres of the park, completing a range of challenges including climbing, caving, frisbee golf and human battleships. All the Cubs did brilliantly, showing great resilience and teamwork. Even after a challenging day, they still had enough energy left to play football until sunset!

Summer Camp

The Cubs and Beavers had an amazing time at the Woodhouse Park camp where they successfully completed their first two-night stay away from home. They conquered climbing, low ropes and an extremely muddy obstacle course- all with huge smiles on their faces. Evenings ended with stories and s’mores by the fire, and to the leaders’ delight, everyone slept through the night. Tetbury First Scouts Team Beavers Scouts at Woodhouse Park Camp. We welcomed a number of past members to our Summer Social…

…informing them it was to be a musical afternoon. What we didn’t tell them, or our current members, was that it was an African Drumming session with Andy Fowler from Stroud! It was a great success, past and present members embraced the challenge and after an hour’s tuition were able to produce some great rhythms. This was followed by reviving tea and cake,

and lots of chatter especially catching up with former members.

We had a great evening with Keble and Ewen and Tetbury WIs at the annual Group Meeting hosted by Kemble and Ewen. The food was delicious and we were entertained by a Ukulele trio, who sang and performed for us. Thank you Kemble and Ewen for a fun evening – it is our turn to host next year!

The Committee have been busy filling up the next few months with fun and interesting activities. We have a craft workshop in October where members will be passing on their skills to other members; a trip to The Barn Theatre to see Haywire; a repeat of our Nailsworth walk as we enjoyed it so much; a pre-Christmas shopping trip and we have just finalised a venue for our Christmas Lunch. Our October meeting will be a Harvest Supper and Quiz, prepared and served by members of the Committee.

The Book Group have been reading ‘Blood, Sweat and Tyres’ by The Hairy Bikers and their next book is ‘The Ladies of Llanfairpwll’ by LK Wilde – a novel about the first UK Women’s Institute.

We are a friendly and welcoming group and our members come from quite a wide area around Avening. If you would like to join us or just come along for a visit, our meetings are held in Avening Memorial Hall on the second Thursday of the month at 7.30 pm. For further details please email Aveningwi@gmail.com or check out our Facebook page Avening WI (where you can also view a short clip of the African Drumming finale!).

South Cotswold Bridge Club

What has playing Bridge given me ?

Before I retired, I moved to the Cotswolds to be closer to an elderly relative. I didn’t know anyone in the area and was keen to find an activity that would give me the chance to meet a whole new group of people. I had always enjoyed playing card games, and so bridge was an obvious choice.

While I was still working, I had a lengthy commute and so began looking for a local club that offered evening lesson. South Cotswold Bridge Club offered a weekly beginners class and I started to learn in the autumn of 2022. For the next 20 weeks I learned and played and also found a regular partner – another beginner like me.

When the course ended all of us beginners transferred to a weekly gentle duplicate

session where we could put our theory into practice in an informal environment. When the gentle duplicate took a summer break we were all keen to continue, so we set up our own weekly ”kitchen” bridge in each other’s houses which had the added benefit of a glass of wine thrown in !

My partner and I began attending the

Let’s get learning!

We are delighted to be back at school, learning, discovering and aspiring. As the children get used to their new year groups, our new reception pupils are settling into school life and have got off to a fantastic start in the Eagles class. At the other end of the school, our y6 pupils are embarking on the last year of their primary school journey and, with this, comes more responsibility as they will take on a variety of roles including those of house captains, playground patrollers and reading buddies.

The Owls class (y5/6) are excited for their residential trip to South Cerney at the end of September where they will take part in a variety of activities, including

paddleboarding and raft building. For their topic this term, they will become scientists as they study ‘Muck, Mess and Mixtures.’ Meanwhile, to tie-in with their term topic on The Great Fire of London, the Kestrels (y1/2) will be visiting the John Moore countryside museum in Tewkesbury. The Eagles will be focusing on learning all about their fellow classmates this term in their topic ‘All About Me,’ while the Hawks (y3/4) class topic also follows a scientific theme, as they learn all about ‘Feeling Fit’.

At the beginning of October, the life education tent will be paying its annual visit to our school. This is part of our Personal, Social and Health education and the children will be involved in workshops including about the brain, healthy

relationships and making healthy choices.

Our y5 pupils will be joining other pupils from local schools at an Earth and Space Day hosted by Westonbirt School and the whole of the Owls class will be learning more about space later this term.

This year’s harvest festival will take place towards the end of October with families invited to bring in donations for a local foodbank which helps families in need.

Come and see our wonderful school in action on either of our two open mornings this term. On the mornings of Friday the 10th of October and Wednesday the 5th of November we welcome you to drop in between 9.00 am and midday for a guided tour and coffee and cake and a chance to experience a day in the life of Avening School.

Do you have a pre-schooler who enjoys playing outdoors? Join us on Friday afternoons 2.00 - 3.00 pm for our Fledglings pre-school sessions for children from 0-4 and their grown-ups run by the fabulous Mrs Carter, our forest school and mental health lead.

Our next monthly talk on ‘The Star of Bethlehem’ will…

…take place on Monday the 20th of October at the Tetbury Goods Shed, from 10.30 am – 12.00 pm. Theories abound for the Star of Bethlehem. Astronomer Steven Tonkin looks at the actual evidence and its cultural context, discusses some recent astrological and astronomical interpretations and arrives at some definitive conclusions about the story. Do come along and meet us. Refreshments will be available.

Here is a flavour of what we’ve been up to since the last issue. Our Art Appreciation group has enjoyed a presentation about David Hockney, looking at about fifteen paintings, illustrating his long and amazing life.. Much of his art is very colourful and the consensus from the meeting was how enjoyable his work is on many levels. The group also discussed the German painter Winterhalter, who is best known in the UK for his paintings of Queen Victoria and her family. One painting of a young Victoria shows her relaxed with quite a sensual look which she commissioned for Albert’s 24th Birthday. It was not shown to the public until 1977 as it was considered to be too intimate a picture of a monarch.

Our Wednesday Bookclub discussed ‘Raising Hare’ by Chloe Dalton. Beautifully written and illustrated it’s Chloe’s first book, written during the pandemic when she was away from her high pressure job as a political advisor. It’s the charming story of her relationship with an abandoned leveret and their mutual trust, a real joy to read.

Our Garden Visits group visited Adeline Farm near Long Newnton. We were shown round by Ros. She demonstrated how

she grows a range of tomato varieties together with companion plants, including different types of basil and tagetes, to control pests naturally. Outside, the group were impressed to see several varieties of squash which were growing very well despite being watered only three times this year due to a heavy application of mulch. Ros explained the community projects she leads at the farm for disabled adults and people with learning difficulties, and local schools, enabling people to enjoy a taste of the countryside.

The group also visited Kiftsgate Court Garden near Chipping Campden, the creation of three generations of women gardeners. The garden is set on a hillside, with mature pine trees and beautiful views to the valley below. It was bursting with colour, despite the recent drought. There were a series of terraces, some very steep banks, sunken gardens, ornamental ponds, and orchard and meadow. The garden

was the setting for a sculpture exhibition, where each piece was carefully curated amongst the backdrop of plants, which was an added bonus.

Our Playreading group read ‘Animal Farm’ by George Orwell, adapted by Peter Hall.

The rise of two powerful totalitarian regimes, Hitler’s Germany and Stalin’s Russia, drove him to write about the underdog and against totalitarianism. It is a powerful story which is frightening as well as informative of the ways people are manipulated.
