ABOUT NIKOLA TESLA

Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) is considered one of history’s most influential inventors. Nikola Tesla dedicated his life and work to the betterment of humanity, and many of his innovations contributed significantly to the advancement of science and to technologies that benefit all of us living today His lifelong commitment to harnessing the forces of nature for the benefit of humanity is a legacy that continues to inspire.

He was born to Serbian parents in what is now Croatia, and studied at two European universities When still in his twenties, Tesla developed a very important invention: a motor that operated on alternating current In 1884 Nikola Tesla moved to America to work for Thomas Edison, but soon started his own company to develop his AC motor, for which he was awarded 40 patents. George Westinghouse purchased all 40 patents and they played a key role in the infamous “Battle of the Currents” with Edison, a proponent of direct current. Ultimately, Amercian companies selected AC over DC, and Nikola Tesla’s invetions are the foundation of our modern power grid

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Nikola Tesla was recognized worldwide as a leading “electrician.” He spent much of his life in NYC, where he lived in fine hotels and associated with cultural icons of the day, some of whom supported his research. Tesla worked intensively on his inventions and promoted them with dazzling onstage electrical displays that made him popular with the press

Nikola Tesla believed he could find a way to transmit information and electric power wirelessly, through the earth Encouraged by high-voltage and high-frequency experiments he conducted in Colorado Springs, Tesla undertook his most ambitious project, a wireless transmitting tower and laboratory called Wardenclyffe in Shoreham, NY; the project was never finished and clsoted in 1903 due to lack of funding

After his time at Wardenclyffe, Nikola Tesla invented several important devices, including the speedometer and tachometer. Tesla lived a relatively quiet existence in the last years of his life, maintaining correspondence with friends and colleagues from around the world, until passing in New York in 1943 at the age of 87

ABOUT TESLA SCIENCE CENTER AT WARDENCLYFFE

Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe (TSCW) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1996 with the mission to transform Nikola Tesla’s last remaining laboratory into a global science center that embraces his spirit of invention, delivers innovative learning experiences, advances new technologies, and preserves his legacy in the Tesla Museum.

In 2025, TSCW will begin construction on the Eugene Sayan Visitor Center—a major step forward in bringing this vision to life The project will include adaptive reuse of the historic Bauer House, sustainable site improvements, and new educational exhibits and programming. The center is expected to open in early 2026 as a yearround destination for learning, inspiration, and community engagement. At the heart of this transformation is the restoration of Tesla’s original lab, which was damaged by fire in 2023 Stabilizing and preserving this historic structure is a top priority, with $2 5 million needed in 2025 to secure the roof and weatherproof the building.

To date, TSCW has raised $14.5 million toward a $24 million capital campaign goal. This funding supports the full revitalization of the 16-acre Wardenclyffe campus into a destination for science, education, and innovation that honors Tesla’s enduring legacy Learn more or donate at: wwwteslasciencecenterorg
