WhatisyourfavouriteTESmemory?

Myfavouritememoryinvolvestheactivitieswith my classmates, where our teachers encouraged ustoengageandcollaboratewithoneanother.

InPre-School,thiswasachievedthroughplayful learning activities, while in High School, it was through various subjects that helped us develop social skills to address academic and personal challenges. Additionally, I thoroughly enjoyed participating in different organising committees for events such as Teacher's Day. These experiences allowed me to hone my communication, outreach, social, and organisationalskills.

atmosphere that made me feel at home The academic programmes were rigorous but incredibly rewarding; I remember the professionalism, experience and knowledge of each of my teachers in their subject, and their passion ignited a life-long interest in different topics so that I could apply them in my personal or professional life, creating a multidisciplinaryknowledge

I had the privilege of attending TES for 15 years, from Nursery to Grade 11. From the first day in Nursery, I was captivated by the vibrant energyofthecampusandthewelcoming

One of the most remarkable things about TES was its strong sense of belonging and community, which, as an alumni, I can take everywhere I go. Teachers were not just educators but mentors who cared deeply about the student's well-being. The diverse student body and various events celebrated the richness of our different backgrounds and promoted a culture of understanding andmutualrespect.

What did you study after graduating from TES?

When my passion for aviation started, I was always curious about what happened behind closed doors when I was at the airport. I always asked myself how airports and airlines operate and make money since they are not typical businesses using the same business model as other industries.

I pursued a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration focusing on Air Transportation (airport and airline management) and a Minor in Supply Chain Management in Aviation & Aerospace at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) in Daytona Beach, Florida I was privileged to study at the leading and pioneering university in the aviation and aerospace industry. There, I gained invaluable knowledge and experience in managing airlines and airports and understanding the intricate supply chain in aviation for all industry stakeholders.

My expertise focuses on a specific niche within the industry For airlines, I specialised in demand modelling and forecasting (analysing travel options and passenger preferences), resource scheduling (fleet assignment, aircraft routing, crew planning, gate assignment, baggage handling, flight planning, and fuel management), revenue management (demand forecasting, no-show rates, overbooking, seat inventory control for flight and network-based revenue management systems, ticket distribution, sales contracts, and code-share agreements), and managing irregular operations (ground delay programs and collaborative decision making, impact of disruptions on airline schedules, and airline schedule recovery)

In the context of airports, my knowledge encompasses the airport system (administration and legal perspectives), operational management (airfield, airspace and air traffic management, terminals, and ground access), and airport administrative management (financial relations with the economy, environment, and communities; planning, capacity; air route development; and delay management)

Beyond acquiring this extensive knowledge, I also

had the opportunity to interact with aviation professionals and learn from them, paving the way for future collaborations. Additionally, I met a diverse group of peers and professors from various parts of the world, enriching my educational experience.

I plan to attend graduate school at Embry-Riddle, probably with a Master of Business Administration in Aviation or a Master in Aviation & Aerospace Sustainability

What foundations did TES give you in your education to help you reach this point in your professional life?

The bases my school provided me for my professional life are rooted in the International Baccalaureate (IB) education The school’s curriculum challenged me intellectually and encouraged my critical thinking and creativity Beyond academics, I was part of different organisation committees that taught me the importance of teamwork and perseverance I had the opportunity to give back to the TES community with the “Mercado navideño” committee,

where we organised breakfast, music presentations for the general services staff and gave them a gift with food and cleaning supplies I was part of the Student Council (Grade 9 representative and Councillor), working on new proposals for my student peers ' personal and academic development. I helped bring the Prefects back by being part of the Selection Committee, working hand in hand with the Student Council and teachers that were involved in this project; we considered it important to bring them back because a student figure was needed to help other students and lead by example but also be the communication bridge between directives, teachers, and the student body;

I was also part of the Love & Friendship Committee, where I was able to manage and arrange the cards that students and teachers buy to send their peers, the bake sale, decorations, and Jeans Day; and I was also part of the Teacher’s Day Committee, were I was also able to organise a breakfast for teachers in their day with musical presentations and gifts, as well as a Jeans Day for the whole school In addition, I was a Prefect myself for two years, the first one when I was in Grade 10 as Head Prefect and the second one in Grade 11 as a Senior Prefect, where I was able to create a project with one of my fellow Prefects: the “Career Day”. We organised a 3hour University Fair with Colombian and International universities for Grades 9, 10 and 11 students. We had an alumni panel where they were able to talk about their current careers, how the process of choosing and applying to universities was, and how TES helped them with the bases and tools they acquired for this process

My time at TES was instrumental in shaping how I am today

Teachers were not just educators but mentors who cared deeply about the students' well-being “

It instilled in me a love for learning, a commitment to community, and the confidence to pursue my goals with passion and determination Looking back, I am deeply grateful for the experiences and friendships I made at TES The lessons learnt and the values I obtained during those formative years continue to guide my current endeavours and will undoubtedly influence my future inspirations. I carry the spirit of the school with me always: a reminder of the importance of learning, community, and perseverance.

The DP courses and my passion for aviation from an early age helped me guide my professional vocation by encouraging my curiosity and how the acquired knowledge can be applied and explored far and beyond I graduated from TES in the middle of a pandemic; even though the situation was tough for everyone since we were not able to leave our houses and travel, I had the opportunity to start my professional degree in the most prestigious university in the aviation and aerospace university with online classes for the first year. When I was going to start my second year, I was able to travel to the United States to attend in-person classes when borders started to open again after the health crisis

DAVID GALLO CHAPAVAL

Class of 2003 - Airline Pilot - LATAM - Airbus 320

CRISTINA PARRA SALAZAR

Class of 2011 - Airline Pilot - Airbus 320

Class of 2021

Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from Purdue University*

Hi! I am Pedro Daniel Soto Rodríguez. For multiple years now, I have been involved with the Composites Manufacturing and Simulations Center at Purdue, where my research in 3D printing, thermal responses, and simulations-based manufacturing in composite materials has shown me what makes them perfect for applications such as wings and fuselages for the Boeing 787 or the Airbus A380

The teachers taught me something important: to obtain results, one has to put in the work. “ ”

What is your favourite memory from TES?

I could not choose one, so here’s a list:

Glorita’s arepas (although they took them away for some reason).

What foundations did the school give you in your education to help you reach this point in your professional life?

The teachers in the Mathematics and Science Departments taught me something important: to obtain results, one has to put in the work Some great teachers and mentors in the P E and English departments showed me the importance of having a balanced lifestyle and connecting and empathising with others in a classroom, on the playing field, and in life.

Finally, my peers and friends really displayed how diversity in thought is something I will encounter in all aspects of my life and the intrinsic value it brings to science and humanity as a whole

Do you consider the STEAM approach fundamental in deciding to study and enter the aeronautics and/or aerospace industry, and if so, what would be the major contributions this approach could offer students?

STEAM is very powerful because it challenges students to question what they think they know, which becomes a valuable process for anyone facing problem-solving and decisionmaking situations. It allows students to understand what the equation or concept on the paper means rather than making them memorise the problems it solves; something that has sadly become the focus of many institutions worldwide Experience has shown that students who grow up with this approach to learning will struggle to succeed in environments where multiple high-level concepts coexist and compete with one another. For this reason, TES does a great job of cultivating the correct mindset

Creating the STEAM focus in a historically humanities-oriented school opens a new approach to learning and helps catalyse education in other areas of knowledge

In my experience, taking IB Math HL allowed me to get an early introduction to many of the mathematical concepts I now solve in structures, aerodynamics, and even propulsion classes STEAM showed me what was coming ahead of me, and when I finally encountered it, that approach to the concept created a strong basis for its formal introduction

Given your profession, how does The English School's STEAM and open-minded IB education influence careers in aviation/aeronautics?

STEAM and IB education provides many benefits to students that embrace them The STEAM part of it brings theory fundamentals and inquiring and curiosity skills that are very important for people who work in the aerospace environment As a complement to STEAM, the IB provides the capability for students to have an open mind and no boundaries in their imagination, which in the real world are essential qualities to find solutions to issues in the aerospace environment

Be resilient and never stop knocking on doors, seeking opportunities

“ ”

What challenges might our students face if they want to enter the world of aviation, and what advice do you have for them?

Although hard to believe, the aerospace world is very small and competitive. Once you are in, you will find that, from time to time, you will meet people you have seen before somewhere else

The aerospace world is very competitive and challenging, demanding a lot of your time and focus on the things you are working on There is a common saying that preaches “there is never a dull moment ”

My advice to all interested in the aerospace world is to be resilient and never stop knocking on doors, seeking opportunities As in many things in life, you are as good as the latest project or thing you do, so we always have to strive for first-time quality, as reworks will cost us additional time and effort that we may need somewhere else

Could you tell us about what it is like to work for one of the largest and most important aviation/aeronautical companies?

Working for The Boeing Company is actually great There is a great working culture, and everyone strives to do a great job and create product preferences for our customers.

I can say that with all the endeavours we have faced until now, Boeing has always cared for us professionally and as a family Boeing is a company that is interested in developing its employees, so many education and career opportunities are available, which ensure that people who dream high can achieve what they have dreamt of

TES PARENTS IN AVIATION

WHAT IS STEAM?

The STEAM learning approach integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics to foster interdisciplinary education. Merging these fields encourages students to think critically, solve complex problems, and innovate creatively STEAM emphasises hands-on, project-based learning where students apply their knowledge in realworld contexts This approach enhances technical skills and nurtures creativity, collaboration, and communication. By bridging the gap between the arts and sciences, STEAM prepares students for the demands of the modern workforce and cultivates a holistic understanding of how different disciplines intersect and influence one another

The STEAM programme at our school is a unique opportunity designed to motivate and inspire teachers and students to embrace the integration of diverse disciplines. It fosters learning opportunities that prepare our students for the challenges of the 21st century. We are engaged in multiple projects that have gained recognition for our school's accomplishments

In our Early Years and Primary section, students from Pre-Jardin to Grade 4 can participate in enjoyable and educational activities, including crystal-making, slime experimentation, volcano construction, colour exploration, potion concoction, and molecule investigation.

Experiential Learning through NASA and STEAM

Having the opportunity to visit other places, cities, and countries as part of a kid's learning process is an amazing way to explore and dive into new learning experiences The Kennedy Space Center offers an incredible programme to students aged 10 to 17 who want to gain knowledge on space-related topics, who want to become astronauts for one day, and who want to learn more about technology and science

A group of students from The English School will be joining the NASA-STEAM camp that will take place in Florida in January 2025. They will be able to enrich their educational process by participating in the “Astronaut Training Experience”, where they will practice their teamwork skills in the Microgravity Simulator (where they must work in teams to repair equipment) Additionally, they will participate in a “Walk on Mars” simulator using virtual reality, as well as in the “Land & Drive on Mars” programme, where they will take the place of a commander or a pilot to navigate the “Martian” surface

These activities will definitely enhance and allow students to explore experiential learning in ways they have never imagined Some students have shared their interest by saying how amazing it would be to have the chance to interact with others in a completely different environment from the school Karen Gómez from Grade 8 has said, “I like the idea of travelling because I don’t normally have the chance to travel much, so being able to go with the school will be great. I also enjoy science and learning about space and planets. NASA sounds interesting”

Moreover, the Kennedy Space Center has a STEAM team that offers interactive experiences including “The Vacuum Space”, “Molecules and their different states”, “The Center of Gravity”, “Air and air pressure ” , “Tricky Science” and “You are a Scientist”, where participants will be able to watch others and learn by experiencing different activities

It is an unforgettable experience that our students will enjoy It will be an educational adventure for TES students to enhance and enrich their learning process and experiences.
