2023 IMPACT REPORT

This publication’s design theme honors the unique way that each Terry Scholar plans for success. The hand-drawn elements remind us that we both define, design and re-draw what our own personal success can be. Our hard work makes achievement of that success possible, even when we must re-design our plans.

With great pleasure, I report that our Foundation continues to change lives for the better every day through its support of higher education. Due to the continued efforts of the Board of Directors and Staff of the Foundation, we remain on firm financial footing and our scholars continue to flourish.

The numbers continue to impress: The Terry Foundation currently supports 853 scholars at 13 public universities across Texas at an annual investment of $19.5 Million. Thanks to the generosity and foresight of Howard and Nancy Terry, the Foundation has expended $370 million supporting 6,552 scholars (current and alumni) since our beginning in 1987. We expect to have 25 interview panels this spring and award 320 new scholarships at a cost of about $24.5 million. As impressive as the numbers are, we continue to focus on educating Terry Scholars “one scholar at a time.” Sixty-five hundred scholars may seem like a lot (and it is) but we never forget that there is no applicant more important than the one sitting across from you at the interview table.

$217,000 in December 2023 toward spring 2024 scholarships – equivalent to funding 19 spring semester stipends. The Foundation and those students thank you for your support. We fully expect the Terry Scholars Fund to dramatically expand into the future and continue to support the good work of the Terry Foundation’s mission of educating young Texans. One hundred percent of all TSF contributions go to fund scholarships. A majority of Terry Scholars Fund donors are Terry Alumni and their loved ones, and we are deeply grateful for their investment in current and future Terry Scholars.

We strongly encourage you to think of the Terry Foundation and the Terry Scholars Fund when you make decisions about giving back to your community. There is no cause that has more positive long-term benefits than education. All gifts directly support our educational efforts. No contribution is too small and in the aggregate they help further Howard and Nancy Terry’s vision of developing future leaders of Texas through education.

more important. We should all be proud of what the Foundation has accomplished but I know that the best years are ahead. Always remember that the Terry Foundation is not a theoretical thing in an office in Houston: it is each one of you, as you strive to succeed and achieve your goals in life, utilizing the education, skills and support that the Terrys have given you. The Foundation is no more and no less than each and all of our Scholars. The Foundation changes lives for the better every day and I know that will continue unabated far into the future. I am pleased to report that I leave the Foundation in extremely capable hands and I know that strong, positive stewardship will continue. The Foundation’s Board and Staff are the best of the best and they will continue to demonstrate the same strong dedication to achieving the Foundation’s mission as they always have.

Good luck and God bless you all.

Chairman of the Board of Directors

Current and former Terry Scholars recognize better than anyone the importance of obtaining an education and the continuing need for financial support. Being a member of the Terry Community includes an obligation to give back and support others into the future. We continue to be extremely gratified by the Terry Community’s demonstration of vast and varied efforts to steward the Terry Legacy through leadership, volunteerism, and philanthropy. Terry Scholars never forget that they are part of a larger community that needs the support of us all. The Terry Community’s commitment to “giving back”

Once you are selected as a Terry Scholar, you become a member of one of the most exclusive clubs in the world, a club whose members uniformly demonstrate intelligence, industry, character and compassion. Our alumni base has grown to 5,187 supported by 6 Terry Scholar Alumni Association chapters. We are gratified to have 2,893 alumni users of Terry Connect, (www.terryconnect.com), and over 2,000 of them expressed their willingness to mentor fellow Terry Scholars. Terry Connect directly supports alumni as well as current scholars and 75% of our current scholars have activated their profiles. If you have not joined your local Alumni chapter or created a Terry Connect profile, you should. You give back to the Terry Community and strengthen efforts to continue the Terry Legacy when you engage with fellow Scholars and help those just starting their journey.

OUR FOUNDERS

Howard and Nancy Terry

In 1987, Howard and Nancy Terry founded what is now the largest private source for scholarships in Texas. The Terrys believed that the students to whom they extended a helping hand would, in turn, give back - to the Foundation, to their college campuses, to their communities and beyond. Today, the success and impact of thousands of Terry Scholars stand as testimonies to the wisdom of that belief.

It is truly amazing to think about the impact that Howard and Nancy Terry have had on higher education in Texas.

6,552 Terry Scholarships totaling more than $370 million dollars have been invested in outstanding Texas students since 1987.

Those Terry Scholars have impacted their families and communities through the gift of a college education, and they steward the Terrys’ mission and vision into the future.

Vision Our Mission

To create a community of educated leaders who utilize their talents to strengthen the state of Texas and impact the world.

SCHOLARSHIP LEADERSHIP

SERVICE COMMUNITY

Terry Scholars challenge themselves academically, personally, and professionally while setting an example for their peers through leadership and service to others. During their time on campus and beyond, Terry Scholars build and nurture a supportive community that celebrates the strengths of each individual. The strength of the Terry Community lies in the diverse perspectives, gifts and goals of Terry Scholars. Although the Terry Pillars of Excellence are common standards held by all Terry Scholars, each individual embodies and demonstrates them in their own way.

“In your life, there are things you can look back on and see the exact moment your life path took a turn. For me, getting the Terry Scholarship was one of those moments. If not for the financial and personal support from the Terry Foundation and my Texas Tech Terry family, I would never have been able to reach the heights I am at now. The past three and a half years have held some of the most challenging and most rewarding moments of my life. Because of the Terry Scholarship, I had the courage and the means to chase after dreams I thought would just stay dreams.”

“Being a member of the Terry family made me a better learner and a doer. I can never thank the Terry Foundation enough for helping me reach my potential and for showing me who I was made to be.”

TERRY SCHOLARS FUND INCOME

“As a first generation college student from a low‐income background, I have always known that getting a college degree would be the best way to change my circumstances and pursue a fulfilling career. The Terry Foundation gave me the opportunity I needed to make achieving my goals possible by addressing my biggest concern at the time of being able to pay for college, but their support didn’t end there. I was able to start college with connections to fellow Terry Scholars that encouraged me to be involved at my campus and in the local community. With finances not being a limiting factor in my decision making, I was able to try out professional and educational experiences with volunteer programs and a different degree path that really kick‐started my career with educational and community organizations. I have been able to turn to the supportive community of Terry Alumni to seek out mentorship and advice during major life transitions.”

“I can now give back to the Foundation in my time with the local Alumni Chapter, in sitting on interview panels when I am able to, and donating to the endowment as a way to contribute to the very same mission that has allowed me gain so much in my life from being a Terry Scholar.”

Interviewing the next scholarship recipients and welcoming the newest Scholars to the Terry Community

Arena Blake (TAMU 2003) 2023 Award Ceremony Volunteer

Last night, I got to go back to my roots Bells High School to welcome Ansley Campbell, an incoming freshman at Texas A&M University, to the Terry Scholar Family!

Twenty years ago, The Terry Scholarship changed my life and allowed me to attend Texas A&M University debt free. It opened doors and possibilities for my career that I never dreamed would be possible, and I know it will do the same for this year’s 320 new Scholars.

As Terry Scholars, we commit to give back to the organization by volunteering for activities like this. I am so grateful for Howard and Nancy Terry and am committed to continuing to honor the deep legacy they have left to help Texas students to help themselves.

2023 Study Abroad

“It was my first time abroad since I immigrated to the US. It was my first time doing field research... It was also the first time I learned to swim and scuba dive, which are the greatest new skills I earned. I had to overcome a lot of fear and doubt I had within myself about being in science and involved in research. I gained a lot of confidence in my professional skills. I also grew a lot while staying with my host family.”

— Larose Mutombo, UH 2020, Galapagos Islands

“In the picture, I am on a cattle farm overlooking the village of Kelso, where my family name came to be... I found out that my 20+ times great grandfather was adopted by the monks of the Kelso Abbey, and that’s where our name came from. This trip was absolutely incredible for so many reasons. This was my first time in Europe, first time on a plane for more than 8 hours, and first time ever traveling alone. I barely knew anyone going on the trip with me, and I am happy to say I have over a dozen new lifelong friendships from my study abroad!”

— Karson Kelso, TAMU 2020, Scotland

“For a short period of time, this experience was my life and all that I knew or even cared about. A piece of me is now forever in Japan, and a piece of this country is forever in me. And one day, I will come back to this land to bond with it once more...Thank you dearly to our beloved Mrs. and Mr. Terry!”

— My Le, UTSA 2021, Japan

“This study abroad changed my life in so many ways. The class I took was, “Tech Needs of Refugee Communities.” This course burst my personal, “American Bubble.” I learned so much about policy and the needs of a refugee community. Working with refugees opened my eyes in so many ways. I am forever thankful for this experience. ”

What Our Scholars Accomplish

“This scholarship not only provided an education that I would not otherwise have obtained, it provided the experiences, the job opportunities, the networking, and the friendships of a lifetime. The Terry Scholarship allowed me to pursue a life I didn’t think would be possible when I first applied at 17.”

“The Terry Scholarship has meant being able to be one of the first in my family to attend college and graduate debt free. It has meant the opportunity to pursue higher education without financial stress and to have the financial freedom to now pursue professional school.
