GROWING FORWARD - GIVING BACK
2017 Annual Report
TABLE OF CONTENTS
We at the Terry Foundation are excited to be in our 30th year of funding Scholars at four-year public universities in the State of Texas. We began fall 2017 with 1,624 Scholars, down modestly from fall 2016’s 1,707. We are pleased with the 3.56 GPA of our traditional Scholars and 3.47 for transfer Scholars. Considering many of our Scholars work, their GPAs are truly remarkable. Attrition continues to be minimal. In the 2016-17 academic year we lost only 2.2%, which compares favorably with the 8% average over the life of the program. These statistics speak volumes about the high quality of our Scholars.
This year, our program budget is over $35.1 million. The Foundation has never solicited money from its Alumni, relying exclusively on the Terrys’ generous endowment. After much thought, the Board of Directors recently authorized the Foundation to begin formally accepting donations and we are gratified that, without any solicitation, 30 former Scholars have elected to give back to the Foundation financially, some of them on a continuing basis. We thank you for honoring your commitment to give back and for doing so without being asked.
A highlight of 2017 was the creation and debut at the fall banquets of a 30th Anniversary video, “Giving, the Story of the Terry Foundation” (available on our web site under “News and Events”), describing Howard Terry’s life and the creation and continuing vitality of the Foundation. We offer thanks to the many Alumni and Scholars who participated in the making of this wonderful tribute to Howard and Nancy Terry and to the Foundation that is their legacy.
We offer hearty thanks to all those who have contributed to our success. Each of us at the Foundation recognizes that we have the best job in the world: we are helping change lives for the better every day!
Very truly yours, Rhett G. Campbell Chief Executive Officer and Board Chair

“The Terry Foundation Scholarship opened a world of opportunities for me. In the most real way, my dreams came true! Instead of paying off a student loan, I will forever be indebted to Mr. & Mrs. Terry. This debt I owe will be paid back by always lending a helping hand, and by making something of myself. This is a debt that has completely shaped who I am, and I am forever grateful.”

Donors
Howard and Nancy Terry’s generosity has enabled the Foundation to make a tremendous impact on the lives of others, despite never soliciting outside financial contributions. Nonetheless, it is gratifying that some of our Alumni and friends remember us financially. In 2017, the Foundation received 128 gifts for a total of $25,735.
We extend a sincere thanks to those who made these contributions: every dollar received from Alumni and friends means more scholarships across Texas. In acknowledgment that such gifts will only increase in importance as the Foundation pursues its mission, the Board of Directors aims to improve the visibility of financial support options for Alumni and friends. Although the Foundation does not actively solicit contributions, we welcome them and promise to be good stewards of all financial gifts, treating them on par with the endowment.

A Legacy of Service
A Year of Service
The 2017–2018 school year marks the 30th Anniversary of the Terry Scholarship. No matter where they live, Terry Scholars can honor the Terry Legacy and celebrate the growth of our Terry Family by giving back to their communities. Throughout the academic year, current Scholars and Alumni are adding their service hours to our cumulative total. At the end of June 2018, the Foundation will share the total number of reported projects and service hours for the year.
30 years ago, Howard and Nancy Terry founded what is now the largest private source for scholarships in Texas.
The Terry’s believed that the students to whom they extended a helping hand would, in turn, give back – to the Foundation, the community and beyond.
Today, the success of thousands of Terry Scholars stand as testimony to the wisdom of that belief.

Growing Forward – Giving Back
“The endowment for the Terry Foundation scholarship program is designed to be perpetual, which means that even though we celebrate a tremendous 30th anniversary milestone, we have many years yet ahead. It has been truly remarkable to witness the growth of the program over the last 30 years, from 2 universities to 13, and from 17 Scholars enrolled to more than 1,600 Scholars enrolled. What remains the same is the commitment to be ‘more than a check in the mail’ and the sense of belonging to the Terry family.
This past year we enjoyed an increase in Alumni participation, both in Foundation hosted events and those sponsored by our Terry Scholar Alumni Association. The enthusiasm of our Alumni to continue to play a part in this enduring legacy is what makes this program unique. Each Terry Scholar pledged to give back in the future, ensuring that our currently enrolled students, and those yet to come, will still be able to experience the feeling of belonging to a community of support and encouragement.
We see examples every day of Terry Scholars making the most of the opportunity they have been given. Whether serving the community, leading an organization, mentoring a fellow Scholar, or studying abroad – these Scholars are becoming the future leaders that the Terry’s envisioned 30 years ago. What a tremendous gift!”

“Though I never got the opportunity to meet Howard Terry, he changed my life for the better. Mr. Terry and the Terry Foundation gave me the greatest gift someone can give to another, and that was the gift of believing in me. Becoming a Terry Scholar was the first time in my life that I truly felt like I was worth something. The gift of believing that I could make a difference and create a positive impact on the lives of those around me... it gave my life meaning.
Each day I live committed to being the best person I can be, committed to giving back and helping those in need. As I look at my signed Terry Acceptance Letter and my Terry Gold Pen framed on the wall of my new house, I’m reminded of just how far I have come.
The Terry Foundation helped me become the person I’ve always wanted to be, and I am forever grateful.”
