WASHING OF THE FEET HOLY THURSDAY

On April 2nd, Holy Thursday, our students, faculty and staff took the opportunity to follow Jesus' instructions to his apostles at the Last Supper from the Gospel of John and participated in our annual Washing of the Feet Community Service Day. "So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet for I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them."

INNOVATIVE INTERSESSION ENGAGING STUDENTS IN EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING This spring, for the second consecutive year, the CN faculty participated in Intersession, a program engaging students in experiential learning and building community. Working together, teachers offered many different courses ranging from Archery to Welding. On March 31st and April 1st the entire student body participated in classes and workshops of their choosing. While a number of instructors used the CN campus as a base, others took students off campus to visit colleges, practice photography in natural settings, explore culinary arts, or have the opportunity to experience what it’s like to go backpacking. Mr. Rutherford prepared a program for students curious about criminal justice. His students observed actual trials and met with judges. College Counselors Mary Euphrat and Tony Greco organized a two-day college tour. Students appreciated how prepared their guides were in helping them to consider future options. Courses such as Dance, Meditation, Boot Camp, Soccer, Sports Psychology, Welding and Robotics earned equally high ratings from students.

Many of the non-profit agencies we worked with have given feedback about how wonderful it is to see students and faculty representing our Catholic school serving the broader community. It is so important that our students get a chance to see various agencies caring for those in need. Many agencies remark that it is a blessing for students to share a service experience with their teachers, and that we visibly are putting our faith into action.

In a follow-up survey, students overwhelmingly supported the program and expressed hope that Intersession would grow.

Thanks to everyone for their commitment to serving our community!

Mother/Daughter Brunch-Vintners Inn

Mother/Son Mass & Brunch

Father/Daughter Dance

“Mother Son Mass & Brunch is a special time that offers my sons and I precious bonding time. It is a day to share a mother's love for her son and her son's love for her. Fr. Raul Lemus, our celebrant, and our Principal Graham Rutherford shared some of their memorable "mom moments" with us this year. It was also a special day for Fr. Raul as his mom was able to join us. The delicious brunch with plenty of sausage and bacon for the young men was a hit. My sons are always glad that they have taken time to spend with me, their friends and their moms. I encourage all CNHS moms and sons to attend and start or continue this wonderful tradition in their family.” -Carol Drake -(Nick '15, Alex '12, Trevor '11, Chris Quock '11)

Mother Daughter Mass and Brunch was held on Sunday, January 11, 2015, at Vintner’s Inn, John Ash. A delicious brunch was served following a prayer service given by Father Raul. Special photos were taken of moms with their daughters. It’s such special time to be able to spend a couple hours with moms, daughters, grandmothers and friends.

“The Father-Daughter Dance is really special to me. My dad and I look forward to it every year and have a special tradition for each dance. The dance is so fun and we never stop dancing. Every year after the dance, my dad and I are closer than ever; it is a great way to reconnect and have fun at the same time. My friends go every year along with their fathers and we all sit together while we enjoy our dinners and then all have a great night dancing. Every year it gets better and better and I cannot wait until the next one!” -Grace Nonella ‘17

“Mother Son Brunch has been a tradition in my family since my brother Trevor's freshman year in 2007. It is a special time to bond with my mother and brothers, in addition to spending time with my friends and their mothers.” -Nick Drake-Class of '15

Campus Update - BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE (BYOD)

At Cardinal Newman we are committed to moving our students and staff forward to a 21st century learning environment. As part of that comprehensive plan we are excited to be launching our BYOD program in the fall. BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) is gaining popularity in many schools across the country as a way of increasing access to vital technology. It acknowledges the reality that students need to have ready access to educationally-valuable technology that, until recently, they were forced to turn off when they entered the school building. It is clear that greater student access to technology will continue to enhance the learning experience here at Cardinal Newman as well as give the students the digital literacy necessary for success in college and in their careers. It will allow for greater collaboration, individualized pacing and instruction, global perspectives, expansion of time and place, greater self-expression, depth of understanding, and greater productivity. It also allows for less weight in backpacks and less cost for books and supplies. After researching other successful programs in Catholic schools around the Bay Area, we have developed our current plan. It will involve a robust infrastructure, and a rigorous curriculum. In summary, if education is about accessing information, using critical thinking, and applying the knowledge to real world issues, then information technology is an important tool in our journey. We have only just begun this transition. School will eventually look very different. The adventure is just beginning.

A RTS A LIVE!

This spring the arts are in the air (as in music, poetry and dance), and on display (fine arts) as ARTS ALIVE! 2015, the annual spring art festival, kicks off at Cardinal Newman High School. It kicks off with an Arts Pep Rally that the ASB students help organize, followed the next week by “Imagine That”, the fine art gallery opening reception; “Poetry Night” headed by the English Department; “So Show Me”, the school’s talent show; and finally the third week holds the “Spring Dance Show”. Some events are ones that students sign up to participate in and others are part of classes they are taking. It’s a wonderful time to stop and appreciate the artistic creativity around campus.
