PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Embracing Transitions

The Fall season marks the start of a new school year, a time when, as a community, we travel through the intersection of farewells and new beginnings. Within the pages of Trinity’s latest issue, we commemorate the extraordinary achievements of the Cardinal Newman Class of 2023 – a group of students who embody the core values of a Cardinal Newman education.

Our Commencement ceremony for the Class of 2023 in June was the culmination of a shared journey spanning four years.

During their years at Cardinal Newman High School, the Class of 2023 flourished, matured, and fortified themselves in remarkable ways. We watched proudly as they grew in mind, body, and spirit, and demonstrated their discipline, compassion, and unbounded potential.

And now, as they are midway through the first year of their newest adventure, we wait eagerly to hear from our newest alumni.

As a parent myself, I understand the bittersweet mix of emotions that come with every big milestone.

Watching our children spread their wings and take that first big leap into independence is both exhilarating and scary.

To all the parents navigating this transition, know that our support is here, and we share your pride in their accomplishments.

The same is true for our freshman class – the next generation of Newman students. They shared a common experience with our graduates as they navigated unexplored classrooms, ventured into uncharted territories, and embraced newfound independence.

As I watch our students and our graduates seek themselves in the world, I am reminded of this blessing: “Let God grant what is in your heart and fulfill all your plans.”

(Psalm 20:4). Let His word be a light for your journey.

Dear Lord,

A PARENT'S PRAYER (Based on the Parent’s Prayer from Marquette University – a Jesuit University in Wisconsin)

Creator God, you have gifted us with children to care for and to nurture.

Our hearts are welled with joy and thanksgiving, anticipation and anxiety, amidst the reality that their childhoods and teenage years are swiftly passing and soon they will be grown and on their own.

Thank You for all that we've learned and experienced these last four years. Thank You for our teachers who have taught us so much, our coaches who work so hard, and our parents who always support us. Most importantly, thank You for the wonderful community that forms the backbone of our school, making it such a beautiful and vibrant place.

The Psalms tell us, “unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” Our class has many honors to celebrate, but help us to remember that when all is said and done, the true honors are due to You, not us. May we remember that

our studying and hard work, of which there has been a lot, is nothing if not backed up by Your power.

As this Class of 2023 moves on in life, help us to remember the lessons and skills we've learned these past four years. From our athletics, we've learned the power of leadership and hard work. From our academics, we've learned creative and critical thinking. From You, God, we have learned the value of service in our communities.

May we use this education, body, mind, and soul, to be forces for good in the world.

We ask this through Christ, our Lord, Amen.

These years are so quickly passing, yet so many things are still left undone, so much still left unsaid, so much we still hope to give to our children before they take their steps into greater independence as young adults.

God of life and love, please strengthen and protect our children amid the challenges and temptations of our society which surround all young people.

Grant them courage in standing for your truth against hardships and evils and compromises of faith.

Provide our children with good friends and worthy confidants.

And help us as their parents, teachers and caretakers, to give them proper support, confidence and courage as they grow to maturity, and help us to discern how best we can lovingly transition with them into their adulthood.

For this we pray, Amen.

The California Scholarship Federation recognizes and encourages academic achievement and community service among middle and high school students in California.

The CSF motto is “Scholarship for Service,” and the organization has been recognizing student achievement since the 1920s. Lifetime Membership is awarded based on scholastic achievement, a challenging course load, and exemplary citizenship.

Our tough-as-nails coaches shed a tear or two as they say a few words to the players they have worked with, mentored, and challenged to reach the next level.

Their teammates bring cookies and cupcakes and handmade signs, their parents snap photos and videos and proudly display their collegiate gear.

The Class of 2023 saw 22 of their classmates sign National Letters of Intent to play their sport at the collegiate level.

STUDENT LIFE

The smell of syrup was in the air at Jake’s Place during Teacher Appreciation Wee 2023! Our fabulous ASB spearheaded a huge effort to share the love and appreciation for teachers all week. On the final day, they all arrived at school in the early morning hours, loaded down with griddles, waffle irons, whipped cream, and all the fixings.

Together members of the Senior class set up different stations around Jake’s Place and served up a waffle and pancake breakfast for faculty and staff! Their sweetest touch was hand-delivering the breakfast treats to make sure they didn’t miss any members of the faculty and staff.

NEWMAN HONOREE Congratulations to Eric McDonell, Class of 2026. Eric was honored at the 2023 Cal-Hi Sports Award Banquet at Levi Stadium, where he was awarded the Loukas Angelo Scholarship!

The scholarship is used for expenses related to annual leadership training in support of the UC Davis Men’s Basketball program.

THEY’VE GOT SPIRIT! Over the summer, Cardinal Newman’s Yearbook crew took home the coveted “Spirit Monkey Award” for being the most spirited school represented at the Yearbook Conference at Cal Poly Pomona.

POWDER PUFF 2023 Spring of 2023 saw Newman bring back another tradition — Powder Puff Football.

In this Women’s Flag Football game between Seniors and Juniors, competition, tradition, and school spirit collide. We were thrilled to welcome back this tradition after a bit of a break - and to take part in the festivities!

Players from our Men’s Football team stepped up as referees and halftime entertainers, bringing their talent and energy to keep the excitement going! The most wonderful part of this Powder Puff showdown was that it went beyond being just a game; it strengthened the bond among classmates, created lasting memories, and reinforced the Cardinal Newman community.

And....as tradition had it, the Juniors claimed victory once again!

As our students prepare for their journey into higher education and their future career path, they are equipped not only with classroom knowledge, but also with the essential critical thinking skills that guide their approach to making big decisions in real-world situations.

Central to this success is our exceptional College and Career Counseling team, made up of Mary Euphrat, and Daniel Benjamin – and for the Class of 2023, we must include Martha King, who retired October 2023. These counselors bring their expertise and a profound understanding of the Newman experience to guide our students toward their goals.

Our college counseling team’s familiarity with the Newman experience allows them to provide personalized guidance on college selection and application processes.

They kick-start students’ preparations with the “College Essay and Application Writing Boot Camp,” a summer program that empowers rising students to take charge of their college applications early on.

For our students, the college counseling journey starts during sophomore year. Tools like the MaiaLearning software program encourage students’ to build their college literacy and set their academic path to meet requirements and future goals. The process ramps up considerably in their Junior year,

and students can use the software to compare and contrast colleges, universities, trade schools and more to prepare for campus visits. By the time Senior year arrives, students have conducted extensive research, allowing counselors to focus on crafting a balanced list of “likely,” “target,” and “reach” colleges.

While technology aids the process, the most impactful asset remains the counselors’ close connection with students and their extensive knowledge of colleges and universities. Daniel Benjamin emphasizes this approach, stating, “My aim in helping students discover their best fit is to listen attentively, discern their interests and priorities, and then suggest suitable schools based on our discussions. I want to ensure that each student makes a decision they are genuinely enthusiastic about.”

In the rapidly changing landscape of college application requirements, our counselors must adapt constantly.

When asked, ‘What are some of the biggest changes to the college application process?’ Mrs. King said, “College counseling is constantly changing. There have been multiple changes over the years in SAT/ACT testing, the use of the Common Application, more selective admissions, and earlier timelines.

Despite these shifts, the fundamental pursuit of finding the right fit remains unchanged, as students are guided through their own personal decision tree to discover the best college or

career path for their own needs and future goals.

Throughout the years, our college counselors have walked alongside countless students, supporting them through challenges, cheering them as they grapple with stress and moments of doubt. They’ve witnessed students overcome obstacles and anxieties.

“The college application and selection process is like a dance – the music changes its tone and beat consistently."

Ms. Euphrat recalls working with a senior who harbored doubts about being accepted to her dream school.

“I challenged her - why did she have that thought? And I let her know that she should not discount it or write it off, because there is always a chance.

She was so shocked when she got in! She called me and thanked me for believing in her even though she didn’t believe in herself. It changed her whole perspective on life and her future to come.”

Ultimately, the role of a college counselor is deeply rewarding.

Witnessing students submit their completed applications elicits a mixture of pride and anticipation, as they take a step toward their future.

Mary Euphrat, Director of College Counseling

Martha King, College Counselor

Heading the team is Newman’s Director of College Counseling, Mary Euphrat, who has been rooted in the CN community since 2006. With three CN alumni in her own family, she possesses a unique perspective from both sides of the college counseling desk. Her daughter, Rebecca Euphrat Regan, is a 2007 UHS graduate, and currently working at Pixar Animation Studios. Jeffrey Euphrat, CNHS Class of 2010, is a sales representative for Eagle Distributing, and Frank Euphrat, CNHS Class of 2012, is a private airline pilot for LJ Aviation.

Bringing nine years of college counseling experience to the table, Martha King had an unexpected journey. Her role as a parent of three Newman alumni led her to discover a passion for researching colleges. This unexpected path led her to complete the UCLA College Counseling program, propelling her into her role as a compassionate guide for students. Mrs. King retired in late Fall of 2023. We miss her presence and expertise, but we also wish her the very best in her next chapter.

Daniel Benjamin, CN ‘2011 College Counselor Daniel is a CN alumnus from the Class of 2011, and another link connecting the past and present at Newman. He has remained involved with Newman as a football coach since graduation, and his diverse background in Managerial Economics, Agribusiness, and College Counseling make him an invaluable addition to the team. More importantly, Daniel’s experiences post-high school has given him insight into a different kind of “typical college experience.” After graduating from Newman, he went to what he was sure was his dream school. As it turned out, it was not the fit he was hoping it would be, and he made the difficult decision to leave after one semester. It turned out to be the best decision for Daniel. He ultimately attended three colleges in four years, but his years in the classroom and on the field gifted him with the determination and focus needed to graduate on time and learn a lot along the way.

Advice from the Experts To encapsulate their wisdom, the counselors offer their top advice for Juniors and Seniors approaching the college application and selection process: Martha King: “Embrace openness to all possibilities, recognizing that the ideal fit may not always align with initial expectations.”

Mary Euphrat: “The college application and selection process is like a “dance” and the music changes its tone and beat consistently. The best advice is to start with an open mind knowing that it is not the name of the college that is most important, it is the fit that is the most important.”

Daniel Benjamin: “Where you go is not who you’ll be.” -Frank Bruni. The title of that book really is great advice. Don’t let any potential stress about college applications take away from such a fun and exciting time in your lives” 26

SPRING SPORTS This year’s Spring Sports emerged as a testament to resilience and accomplishment, despite rain-soaked fields and fierce competition. To all of our athletes who competed in one (or more!) of our many spring sports – congratulations.

Your Newman community of parents, teachers, alumni, and fellow students stands united on the sidelines, cheering you on every step of the way.

BASEBALL

The Cardinal Newman baseball team had an exceptional year with a record of 28-2, achieving their best two-season run in program history. Their remarkable performance earned them the title of Baseball Cal Hi Sports Division II Team of the Year. Despite the challenge of transitioning from CIF North Coast Section

D3 playoffs to the competitive NorCal D1 bracket, the Cardinals showcased their skill and determination.

This achievement marks their inaugural selection as the state team of the year in baseball, a notable feat for a team historically placed within D2.

A standout contributor, senior pitcher Mason Lerma, ‘23, has been recognized as the Press Democrat baseball pitcher of the year for his dominant presence on the mound.

Looking ahead, Lerma is set to continue his baseball journey at UC Davis, a testament to his prowess and potential.

CONGRATULATIONS, COACH DEBENEDETTI – HIGH SCHOOL COACH OF THE YEAR! A CN Class of ‘94 alumnus, Mr. DeBenedetti returned in 2017 to coach the Varsity Baseball team and teach Math. After graduating from Cardinal Newman High School, he pursued baseball at Santa Clara University and later continued his baseball career in the Netherlands, both coaching and playing. In 2004, he returned to Sonoma County and began coaching at Maria Carrillo High School.

Today, he resides in Santa Rosa with his wife Lindy and their three boys, Hudson, Maverick, and Tatum.

We are incredibly fortunate to have Coach DeBenedetti as part of our Newman community.

CARDINAL NEWMAN HIGH SCHOOL Coming in a fast closing (by a mere 1/100th of a second) for 2nd in the Invite 400 was Jacob Patterson, ‘25, with a personal record of 54.39. Liam Currie, ‘24, took 3rd in the Invite 800 with a strong stretch run in a season-best of 2:01.71.

100 Meters: Zack Homan, ‘24, broke his record, finishing with a 12.24. Carson Jardine, 23, also ran strong, setting a personal record of 12.47, as did Hennessey Saunders, ‘24 (13.67), and Ava Jones, ‘25, with a strong time of 13.88.

TRACK AND FIELD In the late Spring, CN’s Track and Field Team participated in a Twilight Meet at Santa Rosa Junior College. The sunny weather lit the way for some amazing outcomes, with 19 athletes beating their personal records.

Notably, Santiago Adan, ‘24, set a personal record of 149-7 in the discus, which moved him to 8th on the all-time top ten list at Cardinal Newman! Gavin Doig, ‘23, won the Invite 200, leaving rival runners in his wake as he set a personal record of 22.31.

Doig also took 2nd in the 100, with a season-best of 11.09.

Trent Lloyd, ‘23, won his heat in the 100 with a personal record 11.66. Jake Joerger, ‘24 also set a personal record in the shot put for the win in 46-2, taking 2nd place in the discus with a personal record of 130-6. Hannah Maida, ‘26 dominated the 100-meter with a personal record of 13.32, putting her at #10 of all-time.

Long Jump: Patrick Gardner, ‘25, set two personal records in the 400 (57.9) and the Long Jump (17-6). Micah Nielson was in form with a seasonbest of 5-8.

Discus: Santiago Adan, Jake Joerger, and Wyatt Chase, ‘25, won their event, with Wyatt setting a personal record of 115-0.

Shotput: Jake Joerger, John Lubas, ‘25, and Devon Bertoli, ‘26 took Photo Credits: Bella Sports Photography home the Gold at the Bruder Relays in Martinez with a combined distance of 118 feet. Jake Joerger produced the winning throw on his last attempt with a personal record of 46-6.

MEN’S GOLF The Cardinal Newman Men’s Golf team finished in 3rd place at the Rooster Run in the NCS Division II Championships.

William Carlson, ‘24, and Grant Wilhelm, ‘26, both advanced as Individuals to the D1 NCS Championships on Monday May 15th at Foxtail North in Rohnert Park.

The team score of 312 was just 3 shots behind the winners from Branson High School, who shot a combined 309.

Their 3rd place win reflected a solid total team effort with Kellen Collins, ‘24, shooting 79, while Ryan Bello, ‘24, and Jared Roy, ‘25, shot a solid score of 80 each. At the end of the season, many of the players were already planning their return for the next season.

We can’t wait to see their power and precision on the greens in the Spring of 2024!

VOLLEYBALL FOR THE WIN TWO NEW SPORTS ENHANCE THE NEWMAN SPRING SEASON

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL The story of the Cardinal Newman Men’s Volleyball team is a great example of how passionate students can initiate change and make a positive impact on their school community.

It all started when Connor Delaney, ‘25, who had played the sport for a co-ed team in middle school, expressed interest in starting a high school team at Newman.

With encouragement from his parent, a former college volleyball player Connor and other students approached the Newman administration with this idea.

The team started the year with a lean roster of just eight determined athletes who were new to the experience of competitive volleyball. But that did not deter them one bit, and ultimately they had an overwhelmingly positive first season.

We are grateful to this group of students for creating a new sports program for themselves - and for all the athletes who will follow in their footsteps.

Congratulations to all of the Men’s Volleyball Players on a spectacular first year - and to Coach Allison Delaney for her mentorship that turned this idea into a reality.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL: MAKING WAVES

Newman’s Beach Volleyball Club enjoyed a great inaugural season, traveling to tournaments all over Northern California.

The Cardinal Newman Beach Volleyball team, a young and determined squad, secured 9th place out of 17 teams at the Northern California Beach Volleyball Championships held on Santa Cruz’s Main Beach. This season, the team showcased remarkable growth by engaging in three times the number of matches against other schools compared to the previous year, a valuable experience for the predominantly youthful roster.

Head Coach Daryl Kapis expressed his satisfaction with the program’s approach to player development, emphasizing the goal of building versatile athletes capable of excelling in both indoor and beach volleyball.

This positions the Cardinal Newman team for a competitive advantage on both the indoor and beach courts!

SOFTBALL The Cardinal Newman Softball team was exciting to watch – extending their season to the NCS Championships, where the Cardinals fought their way through the brackets and won their first title!

The roster last Spring was on the young but mighty side, with nine freshmen in the mix. The team grew together under the guidance of Coach Vreeland. Notable that season was Callie Howard, ‘26, who was credited with a ‘near perfect performance’ by the Press Democrat during the NCS playoffs.

Also making headlines was Jordyn Johnsen, ‘26, who competed with Team USA and brought home the gold at the 2023 U-15 Women’s Pan American Championship in Lima, Peru.

SWIMMING Our Men’s and Women’s Swimming had a great season! The Women’s Team were the NBL Redwood Divisions Champions.

Natalie Farquhar, ‘24 (shown at right) broke school records in 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke; the 200 freestyle record was previously held by an Olympic Swimmer! She qualified for and competed in the CIF State Championships.

MEN’S TENNIS

During one of the last games of the 2023 season, our Men’s Tennis team took their 9-0 record to a match against the Windors Jaguars.

Despite complications from the weather, our Cardinals really shined!

Sophomore Aiden Buerger and Senior Paul Munsell shined on the courts, but ultimately lost deciding tiebreakers. CN Sophomore Josh Buerger and Freshman Davis Walsh secured wins in the singles, earning the number 2 and 4 spots respectively.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

The Cardinals showed their depth comfortably winning number 1 doubles (Junior Brydan Aguirre and Senior Levi Iskin) and 2 doubles (Junior Dante Natale and Senior Nolan Postal) The Men’s tennis team finished out their regular season at 13-1 overall (Max Preps).

Women’s Lacrosse battled hard and had throughout the season and made it all the way to the Division 2 North Coast Section Playoffs!

At every game, they displayed consistent communication and teamwork, under the guidance of new Head Coach Kathy Damiani (Alum Parent). We can’t wait to see them in action again next season!

MEN’S LACROSSE A highlight from the season was the 10-9 overtime win over St Vincent - It was a thrilling and hard fought game between teams that are very evenly matched. Saint Vincent lost an early 4th quarter lead to find themselves down 9-6 with 53 seconds to play. The Mustangs staged a furious comeback scoring three goals including a final tally at the buzzer to send the game into sudden death overtime.

Cardinal Newman won the face-off, settled the offense and with two quick skip passes from Presley Lashinski, ‘24 to Zach Raia, ‘25, then to Anthony Velladao, ‘23. Velledao, CN’s attack-man, found the back of the net for the game winner. The crowd on both sides was incredibly loud and supportive, and especially appreciative of the effort and entertaining night from both teams.

The Newman/Ursuline Junior & Senior prom has been a rite of passage for generations of students.

Prom–that magical night of dinner and dancing. A night that generates a thousand memories and even more inside jokes. For our seniors, it’s a milestone that marks their transition from adolescence to adulthood. While fashion and music may have changed over the years, the essence of prom night has remained rooted in its rich traditions.

Prom night has always been about the details - the theme, the limo, the dress, the shoes. Gen Xers will remember color-coordinating the corsage with the dress, as well as the bow tie, the vest, and the cummerbund– often complimented by Doc Martens. The 70s will always be known for that iconic powder blue tux and feathered hair.

Tuxedos and flowing gowns are still a staple at Newman proms, with students today adding personal touches to their outfits to make a statement.

Cardinal Newman proms have withstood the test of time, preserving their core traditions while adapting to the evolving tastes and preferences of each generation. From the early days of teaching social etiquette to the modern era of extravagant “prom-posals” and Instagram-worthy photos, prom night remains, at the very least, an unforgettable event. These timeless traditions continue to shape the memories and experiences of countless young people as they celebrate this important milestone on their journey to adulthood.

VALEDICTORIAN ADDRESS

EDUCATION OF THE SOUL “We certainly wanted to be something, but had yet to discover what this something was.”

Good afternoon parents, family, friends, teachers, faculty, and of course, my classmates. I am humbled by the opportunity to be in front of you today, and could not be more proud to be a member of this group of incredible human beings.

Last year, as my twin brother and I were discussing the previous class’ graduation, in typical John fashion, he was quick to explain the Latin origins of the word “valedictorian.” For those of you who are curious, the word comes from the Latin “vale” and “dict,” translating roughly to “goodbye” and “speak.” So, by definition, this is supposed to be a goodbye speech. But right now, let’s go back to our very first hello, four years ago.

I don’t think any of us knew what to expect freshman year. We were surrounded by a whirlwind of upperclassmen, all of whom seemed to know what was going on.

We, on the other hand, barely knew where Mr. Parelius’ room was, let alone who or what we wanted to be. We certainly wanted to be something, but had yet to discover what this something was.

Eventually, we began to discover our “something”.

Some of us found sports.

Others found the arts or the sciences, and some of us found the most fulfillment in meeting and spending time with each other. This didn’t only come with time- We found ourselves through jumping headfirst into life, without even noticing what we were really doing was learning.

That is the thing about learning. It isn’t always intentional and it isn’t always in a classroom. We learn from every random interaction and every seemingly trivial experience.

If only we take the time to care about the people and world around us, we will never be limited in our

opportunities to learn. As we have all heard, a true education includes the entire person in mind, body, and soul.

For those of us, unlike me, who aren’t complete nerds, education of the mind might seem to be the most mundane of the three, but we have proved this to be false, time and time again. From Barbies with Mrs. Stimmel to some pretty killer King Lear acting, we have learned with each other and from each other.

We learned how to learn— the art of working together, the value of collaboration, and the true joy that comes from education.

Education of the body is perhaps the most famous aspect of a Newman education. We see headlines in the PD— “Cardinal Newman triumphs in NBL water polo” “Cardinal Newman girls basketball declared a ‘competitive anomaly.’” But these headlines don’t tell the whole story. The whole story has early morning weights and late night drives

home from games, and the almost cult-like camaraderie (looking at you, baseball), that persists through winning and losing. Headlines give statistics— they don’t show the teamwork and hard work that makes it happen.

Education of the soul is the glue that holds us all together. It is both losing our voices at football games and attending school-wide mass each month. It is also the everyday kindness of talking to a stranger in the back of class, waving to Sean as he whips by on his golf cart, chatting with Mr. and Mrs. Corriveau, and always returning a smile from Ms. Lane. Education of the soul comes from people with soul.

‘Education of the soul’ is the glue that holds us all together.

We have shown up here at 8:25am each day (or, in many cases, most days) not just to receive our diplomas and be able to wear these cool hats, but to become teachers ourselves. And as Seniors, that is exactly what we have begun to do.

We are the ones leading cheers, the ones guiding freshmen to classrooms, and the ones in charge of clubs. The passions we have spent time developing are the same ones we are passing on, whether through tutoring or sharing tips about friendships, or, most commonly, by example.

We entered high school as students. We are leaving as teachers.

As we prepare for life after graduation, I know that we will continue to teach. And although some of us will

teach through lessons and lectures, most of us will teach through our actions and through our words.

We will teach through living, through caring for the people and things we love most. And as we do so, I hope that we never stop learning; that we never stop caring enough for the people and world around us to pursue a deeper understanding, not only in the classroom, but through living life thoroughly and joyfully. I hope that we never forget that learning can and should be synonymous with living.

By definition, this speech is a goodbye speech. But as we receive our diplomas and go off to our next journey, I do not think that we will ever truly leave behind the people and lessons we have encountered in these

four years Rather, it is just another beginning, just the same as freshman year. And this time around, we will continue to learn, but we will also teach, sharing through our words and through our actions what we have learned about each other, this world, and ourselves in the past four years.

Therefore, our true Newman experience is not ending, and this is not a time to say goodbye.

This of course, would not have been possible without those who have taught us throughout this time. So thank you all. Thank you to the teachers, faculty and coaches who have supported us, opening your doors to questions and rants, whether about calculus or friend troubles. There has never been a moment in which you have not

welcomed and truly, deeply cared for us, not only as students, but as people.

Thank you to the parents and family members for shuttling us to games and practices, for all the photos you have taken that were awfully embarrassing in the moment, and for being there through it all. And thank you to all of my classmates— for caring enough to learn and for learning enough to teach.

Congratulations to the Class of 2023— we did it!!

In These Moments “Good evening graduates, and to all who have so graciously attended this ceremony tonight. I thank you all for being here and for supporting the incredible group of individuals that comprise the Class of 2023.”

I especially thank the teachers here this evening who have made this moment possible, and have helped this class grow and succeed, giving us the strength, knowledge, and passion to be here just minutes away from receiving our high school diplomas.

I feel incredibly honored to speak to you all this evening; however, I hope that my words carry a message in representation of my class, as I am no more qualified to stand before you than any member of this remarkable group of students.

The Bible tells us: “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will

never enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:3) It’s difficult to understand what it means to become a child as an adult, but it starts with humility and the willingness to be a beginner.

After Steve Jobs was fired from Apple he shared that “Success is heavy; whereas, being a beginner is light,” sharing that there was a sense of relief from being fired from the company he started because he had an opportunity to be a beginner again. When I think of this concept of the lightness of a beginner, I immediately think of children, the beginners of life.

I still remember seeing my infant cousin about two hours after she was born. She was the most perfect being. She possessed an innocence that was in no way rooted in success, and we didn’t praise her perfection because she had accomplished something great, but because of the beauty of her soul.

This first moment, capturing the beauty of children’s

CARDINAL NEWMAN HIGH SCHOOL nature, that I believe to be too Godly for science to begin to understand, led me to realize that we spend our whole lives trying to regain the perfection we achieved at birth. I continued perceiving children with this set of fresh eyes.

Last summer, I began working at a camp for foster children in Sonoma county.

At the start of each day, we would begin with what’s called Breakfast Club. All the kids would walk in on this red carpet into the stage area, and we would start each morning performing and dancing. On the very first day of camp, we were all dancing and singing and this little seven year old girl yells out “I have the best dad ever. He’s in jail right now.”

And in this eye-opening moment provided to me by a child, I realized that a large part of the innocence of a child is that they have no boundaries to love. While the rest of us are living in the adult world of violence, racism, drugs, hate, mental illness, we are forming opinions on what’s right and what’s wrong, not realizing that our judgment is only encouraging the lack of love in this world, while children love every being no matter their mistake, or their fault.

I look back at the memories that this class has cherished together, the times we started anew, realizing it was only when we together resembled children that these moments existed at a depth. In the times we stood on Ms. Stimmel’s desks yelling lines from The Merchant of Venice.

In the times we ran across our rooms collecting paper clips simulating a factory in Mr. Geoffrion’s class. In the

times that we’ve trusted one another, closing our eyes and being guided by our peers through Mt. Gilead during retreats. In the time Vero fearlessly grabbed the microphone at a rally and belted Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You.” Or the time we all “Griddy-ed” across the gym with Mr. Rutherford and Mr. Erickson. Or the time we cheered like it was life or death moments before Natalia’s NCS gamewinning goal. In those times John Simon threw Pi Day Math Club parties. In the times we’ve watched Jack Capitani lose his fear of judgment, taking the stage at Modern Band performances, or the time at Disneyland we hysterically laughed as Maurice set off the fire extinguisher.

In the times we’ve served our communities, leveling ourselves down to the humility of a child, or the times we’ve bowed our heads and prayed together as children of God. In these moments, our willingness to engage in childlike behavior brought us memories and values that we will choose to return to and be guided by throughout our lives.

In this moment, I reflect on the time our classmate Nina shared that if she could return to kindergarten and give herself one piece of advice, it would be that you should always make friends the same way you do in kindergarten. Who knew sitting on top of the monkey bars I would make a lifelong connection when a five year old stranger asked me to be her best friend. There may not be any monkey bars to sit on in the next chapters of our lives, but

that does not limit our ability to make friends like a child.

As I reminisce, I realize this graduation resembles a door between youth, and the start of adulthood, but why let that door shut? I look upon this decorated class with a profound hope that you continue to live like children.

I hope you continue to love without boundaries, continue to be thrilled by risk taking, continue being spontaneous, and continue reinventing yourselves at any spark of interest. Become a child so that you can experience the lightness of a fresh perspective to life.

Ultimately, wherever tomorrow takes you, don’t allow the mark of time to let you tick away the moments that are meant to matter.

NEWMAN TRADITION come across because I am not able to “out-intellect” our brilliant valedictorian and salutatorian, Julia and Hayden, and I’m not able to outwit our everyday Zoom comedian Principal Reynolds; but I feel strongly that I know Newman tradition better than anyone else – well, besides Mr. Rutherford.

Hello, I’m Nicky Ayre, and I’m honored to speak in front of all of you today.

A little bit about me, I have a brother who graduated from Newman in 2021, and I’ve been a Newman fan since I was in middle school.

I remember being gifted my first CN sweatshirt before coming to Newman, and the rest of my life was set. I was a Cardinal.

In the stages of drafting this speech, I was concerned with how I would be able to

When I prepared to write this speech, I recalled my journey, the lessons learned, the friendships made, and most importantly, how my experience at Newman has influenced my future.

Newman Tradition—when I hear this phrase, I am stuck with a sense of joy because now that we are graduating, I know we have helped preserve and add to the wonderful legacy of Cardinal Newman. The word “tradition” makes me think of a sense of timelessness, a passage connecting us to the past while guiding us toward the future.

That is the reason why it is a surprise if you go to a game and can’t find Jerry Robinson or Tom Nunes.

Alumni want to come back.

Not only do they want to see how proudly Newman is represented, but they want to see how it is changing.

The flow of time waits for no one. Soon WE will be the

Alumni who want to come back and talk about the glory days. Newman tradition is the love for the school and for the people inside it. Think back to the football games on those freezing Friday nights, where the roar of the crowd filled the air. Or the rivalry basketball games where we would go back and forth against the other team. The championship teams wouldn’t have been able to do it without the foundation our student body provided. The sense of camaraderie was at an all-time high when we were cheering for our teams because no matter the lead or deficit, it was not just about winning but about the shared experience—the sense of unity that tradition brings.

Recall the excitement of each and every dance we’ve had.

The rallies held, each class sitting in their decorated section, the games we’ve played in the gym, and the awkward walk ups before asking someone, or getting asked, to a dance. The elaborate floats, the election process of Homecoming and Prom royalty, the laughter and cheers, the dances in all different locations across the Newman campus—these moments brought us closer together as a class, forging bonds that will withstand the test of time.

Tradition is not merely about the events and rituals. It is about the values and principles that lie at the core of our high school experience.

To educate the mind, body, and soul. The unwavering commitment to knowledge and the dedication to growth, with an emphasis on respect, integrity, and fellowship. All of these ideals have been nurtured within these walls, passed down from one generation to the next.

As we are on the cusp of the future, getting ready to embark on our own unique paths, let us carry the tradition of our high school in our hearts. Let us embrace the lessons we have learned here and allow them to guide us toward success and the accomplishment of our dreams.

As we prepare to turn our tassels and take that leap into the future, let us celebrate the tradition that has shaped us, taught us, and prepared us for the journey ahead. Think back to all of the “First Times” you’ve had while at Newman. The first time you got out of your comfort zone and tried hanging out with a new group of friends, the first time you waited in the never-ending line at Jake’s Place, the first time you

As the school continues to expand, with new buildings and a Chapel, it is possible that as we grow up, one day we may walk through the school and not recognize the place we once spent hours in; however, it is important to realize that as our school changes, what makes this place so special is not just the new buildings but the people within its walls—the teachers, the staff, and the

bond between each person who wears the CN logo on their heart every day.

Cardinal and Gold flows through our veins, inspiring us to achieve greatness and strive for excellence.

Remember that Cardinal Newman is not just a place where we graduated, but a family that will continue to expand and grow as each class graduates.

It is our duty to live on with the Newman Tradition instilled in our hearts and bestow the beautiful teachings onto generations to come.

If you are a member of the Cardinal Newman community, you want the person sitting next to you to succeed. You want the people around you to smile because it also brings you happiness.

We can all do great things because we have a family within the Class of 2023

and the entirety of Newman.

“In the Fall of 2018, I started attending Arizona State. Like many college students, I felt alone. To cope with reality, I dove into the party scene head first and before I knew it, three and a half years of college had flown by. It wasn’t until my final semester when a friend brought me to Hope Church for the first time and I experienced something totally different! I saw people that had built their lives on something bigger. There was something missing in my life and I knew I needed to learn more.

Hope Church Movement is a collegiate-focused church planting movement in 4 cities reaching 22 college campuses in Arizona and Nevada. We’re all about reaching the next generation on college campuses and their surrounding cities!

We have people of all ages and stages of life because it takes all generations to reach the next generation. I am a full-time Campus Missionary with Hope and I am currently developing a financial partnership team of individuals and businesses to support me; similar to other missionaries.

University of Georgia ‘21, is a co-founder and Head of Communications and Sales at Somethings in NYC, an organization which offers support for youth and teen across the United States.

Somethings completed their seed round in the beginning of 2022 and raised a staggering $3.2M backed by venture capital firms across the country.

“Somethings strives to ensure that no teen struggles alone,” by harnessing the power of peer mentorship - which clinically and academically spans back 40+ years - she and her team have built a program which teaches teens the life skills needed to navigate their high school years and the emotional support needed to go beyond.

Tony Lombardi, ‘85, with wife Christine, and Henry Belmonte, ‘82, with wife Shelby, have organized a July 2024 European river cruise aboard the AmaLyra.

Long-time family friends, Tony, of Lombardi Wines, and Henry, of VJB and Wellington Cellars, are co-hosting the trip. The cruise will benefit the family foundation, Hilinski’s Hope, and their mission to help student-athletes with mental health and wellness at universities and high schools across the country. This is a chance to gather great people, enjoying a memorable trip, while supporting a very worthwhile cause.

Henry and Tony have planned the wines, seminars, dinners, and an onboard Hilinski’s Hope fundraiser including once-in-a-lifetime sports memorabilia, large format bottles, and winery experiences.

They are excited to share their wines, along with tasting the delicious wines of the amazing wine regions they’ll be traversing.

STUDENT LIFE CENTER RIBBON CUTTING CELEBRATION

Cardinal Newman celebrated the opening of our highly-anticipated new Student Life Center on August 9, 2023, just in time for the 2023-2024 school year.

Designed by Quattrocchi Kwok Architects (QKA), architect and master planner for the school’s ongoing campus rebuild and improvement projects, and built by GMH Builders (GMH), the Student Life Center replaces and expands upon the library and media center lost to the 2017 Tubbs Fire.

the central hub for student activity, enriched with techand collaboration-focused spaces to support learning and social connections,” said Cardinal Newman President Dr. Linda Norman. “We are grateful for the indomitable spirit of our school community, the generous support of our donors, and the invaluable guidance of our project partners as we mark this latest step forward in rebuilding what was lost and planning for the future.”

Our new Student Life Center was designed with features similar to a college student union, with nextgeneration facility to further the school’s goal to provide supportive spaces beyond the classroom for students to study, socialize, refuel, and relax.”

The completion of the Student Life Center was celebrated with a ribboncutting ceremony attended by staff, students, alumni, and donors. President Linda Norman welcomed guests and shared words of gratitude, and Alum Scott Cromie (‘74) eloquently spoke about his time at Newman and how grateful he was to be back on campus to celebrate these improvements.

A CALL TO LEAD On October 9, 2017, the Tubbs Fire swept through our campus, destroying 22 classrooms, our library, counseling, and administrative offices, and heavily damaging our north wing classroom building and all-weather turf baseball field.

In response, our local community and friends around the world generously donated to our Fire Relief Fund to aid Cardinal Newman in its recovery efforts.

Our administration’s top priority was returning our students to learning, which required classes to be taught off site at four local parishes. A Call to Lead Capital Campaign was launched to build a new two-story classroom building with 19 classrooms, a Student Life Center with a

Library, Lounge, Innovation Center, Digital Lab, and a new Chapel. Our community united like never before to raise funding for this effort which began in 2018 and culminated with the opening of the St. John Henry Newman Chapel in 2024.

Thank you to all our generous benefactors who supported A Call to Lead Capital Campaign to rebuild the Cardinal Newman campus.
