he Golf team came on very strong in the second half of the season. Led by All- League performers senior Kevin Parry, junior Brandon Bone and freshman Eric Bolander (#2 stroke average among NBL golfers), the Cards won four of their last five tournaments including the NBL Championship tournament at Santa Rosa CC (also won individually by Parry with a 72). They also won the Ukiah Classic Tourney (Bone 72). Parry and Bolander competed at NCS in McKinleyville where Bolander shot 76 and advanced to the NCS TOC tournament. Seniors Nic Justice and Sylas Montgomery were much improved from the previous year, as well as sophomore Seth Doolittle. All three shot in the 70's at some point in the season and contributed greatly to the overall success of the team.

his year the JV golf team, coached by Frank Guillen and Chris Gregus, was lucky enough to play and use Windsor golf course as their home course. They enjoyed great weather for most of the golf season. The team had wins over Benicia, Marin Catholic and Justin Siena. From their first to last match of the season, the team score improved by 31 strokes. The team leaders were sophomore Matt Bertacco, freshman Jules Fieri and freshman Pat McNeany, but everybody played well and improved their game.

he Cardinal Newman Varsity Tennis team had a very successful 2014 season. After losing nine seniors from the previous year, the team was looking for some new leadership from their seniors: Matt Payne, Jeff Destruel and Rex Zhang. There were a lot of changes from the previous year, but The Cardinals worked extremely hard and earned a 2nd place league finish of 12-2 and overall record of 16-7. Our singles lineup showed great promise and leadership as senior Matt Payne, sophomore Connery Gschwend, junior Tom Broffman and senior Rex Zhang lead the charge. Our number one doubles team of senior Jeff Destruel and junior Brad King went undefeated in league and gave the team many great wins. Newman had some great results from new players freshman Max Gustavson, sophomores Trevin Anderson-Soria and Chris Buse’. They showed great potential and will be strong leaders for the next season.

In post season, Matt Payne earned 3rd place in the NBL Singles Tournament and Matt teamed up with Connery Gschwend to come in 2nd in the NBL Doubles Tournament. Matt and Connery represented the NBL in Division I NCS Doubles competition. Unfortunately, they pulled the Number 1 seed from Redwood High School and lost first round. With losing only three seniors for next year, the Cardinals look to improve upon the results from this year and win the NBL next season!
