GRADE 6th SCHOOL YEAR: 2017-2018

THE GREEK EASTER Easter is one of the most sacred religious traditions in the Greek Orthodox faith. There are a lot of preparations and customs in modern Greek life. There are many preparations for Easter between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. Every region has its own local customs associated with Easter. One of the most important customs of the Greek Easter is on Holy Saturday when the Holy flame is brought to Greece by plane from Jerusalem and it is taken to the churches all over Greece. On Holy Saturday, at midnight, we celebrate ‘Anastasi’ or Resurrection that is, coming back to life after death. At the churches before midnight all the lights are put out and churches are lit only by the Holy flame on the altar. Then at 12:00 midnight all the priests sing the Byzantine Chant ‘Xristos Anesti’ (Christ is Risen) and

people give wishes to each other. There are a lot of fireworks in the sky, too. By Mathew and Michael Source: http://www.thespruce.com

EΑSTER IN ITALΥ The Italian Easter is no different from the Catholic Easter, but it is full of Italian customs. The Catholic Easter, like the Orthodox, is a moveable holy day (κινητή εορτή) and it is celebrated according to the Gregorian Calendar, while the Orthodox Easter follows the Julian calendar. Orthodox and Catholic Easter coincide (συμπίπτουν) about every 3 years. Each part of Italy has its own customs and traditions, which culminate at the end of Lent, specifically at the end of the Holy Week.

Easter Customs in the U.K. The Egg Rolling

In the UK egg rolling has been a tradition for over a hundred years. People decorate eggs and they leave them to roll down a hill. In recent years chocolate eggs have been used.

The Cracking of the Eggs The game is to hold an egg in your hand and the other player tries to crack it. If the egg does not crack, you are the winner!

The Egg Hunting The Easter bunny hides the eggs in the garden of the house. The children

try to find them. Sometimes the eggs are small and chocolate, too!

THE ENGLISH THEATRE CLUB IN OUR SCHOOL! A month ago, the English theatre club came to our school. An actor and an actress presented to us the play ''Charlie Chaplin''.

The play was interactive and they took some children up on the stage. At first, they didn't talk but after a while they started talking. They spoke in simple words so that everyone could understand them. Except for that, the play was wonderful and very funny. Picture: The English Theatre club

25th of MARCH We celebrate the 25th of March to honor the revolution of the Greeks against the Turks in 1821. On March 25 th we do a parade and we eat fish because we fast. The Greek rebels fought bravely against the Turks and they freed Greece. A lot of statues were built and poems

were written for the rebels and for the people who helped them. We are free because of them and we will never stop celebrating their courage and bravery.

THE ACROPOLIS On March 1st we visited the Acropolis, the most important sight in Greece. We saw the Parthenon and the Erechtheion with the five of the six Kariatides.

When was it built ?

The Acropolis was built between 450 – 420 BC by Callicrates and Iktinos on a stone which was150 meters tall in honor of Athena, the goddess of wisdom. But when the Venetians came and bombed the Acropolis, the Parthenon was completely destroyed. NOW? Now the Acropolis is used as a sight and millions of tourists visit it every year.
