If there’s one thing the hotel industry has mastered over the past few years, it’s adaptation. Whether facing the current rising living challenges or tackling issues of labour shortages, and evolving guest expectations, we’ve learned to be agile and responsive to industry shifts. Staying ahead requires keeping up with the latest trends and developments. Over the past 12 months, we’ve engaged with hundreds of leaders in the hotel and accommodation sector to identify the top five trends you need to know this year. Additionally, with the rising cost of living, there’s a growing interest in regional and domestic travel, making it essential for hotel & accommodation providers to adapt and cater to these shifts effectively.
Advanced analytics and AI are being increasingly utilised to create hyper-personalised guest experiences. A report by Accenture indicates that 83% of consumers are willing to share their data for a more personalised experience. AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants are enhancing customer service by providing quick and intelligent responses to inquiries, reducing wait times and improving overall guest satisfaction. This technology allows hotels to anticipate guest needs and preferences, thereby offering tailored services and recommendations. The global AI in the hospitality market is projected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 60% until 2033 (Epos Now).
If you’re eager to delve deeper into AI’s transformative impact on marketing, join us at the Hotel Marketing and Small Hotelier Summits. Here, we’ll thoroughly explore AI-driven tools, strategies, and necessary precautions for effective marketing. At the Revenue & Distribution Summit, discover how AI can enhance market segmentation, enabling you to predict trends, personalise guest experiences, and boost profitability. A significant 76% of travellers express a desire to travel more sustainably, according to Booking.com. Hotels are responding by reducing energy consumption and transitioning to renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. Many hotels are also eliminating singleuse plastics and opting for sustainable materials in their amenities (Hospitality Insights) (Epos Now). Additionally, initiatives such as installing smart energy management systems and promoting eco-friendly transportation options are becoming more common.

The success of any hotel or hospitality business is deeply intertwined with the well-being of its staff. Happy, healthy employees are more engaged, productive, and motivated, which translates into better guest experiences and improved operational efficiency. Recognising this, we have introduced the People & Culture Summit at NoVacancy 2024, dedicated to addressing the critical role of employee welfare and creating a positive workplace culture.
Employee well-being encompasses physical health, mental health, and overall job satisfaction. In an industry where the quality of service can significantly impact customer satisfaction and business reputation, ensuring that staff feel valued and supported is essential. A study by the Global Wellness Institute highlights that companies investing in employee wellness programs see an average return on investment (ROI) of $3.27 for every dollar spent. This underscores the economic benefits of prioritising staff welfare.
At the People & Culture Summit, we will focus on strategies to enhance employee well-being, such as implementing comprehensive wellness programs, offering mental health support, and promoting work-life balance. Additionally, fostering a positive work environment that emphasises respect, recognition, and career development opportunities is crucial for retaining top talent and reducing turnover rates. According to a survey by Gallup, companies with highly engaged workforces outperform their peers by 147% in earnings per share.
Join us at the People & Culture Summit at NoVacancy 2024 to learn from industry experts about effective practices and innovative solutions to enhance your staff’s well-being. By investing in your employees, you invest in the future success of your business.

QR codes, mobile check-ins, digital keys, and Iot devices for smart rooms are becoming standard in hotels. These technologies enhance guest convenience and operational efficiency while minimising physical contact. A survey by Oracle Hospitality found that 73% of hotel guests prefer to use their smartphones to manage their hotel experience, including check-in and room access. Additionally, investments in technology infrastructure, such as advanced reservation and payment systems, are helping hotels streamline operations and improve customer satisfaction.

As we continue to navigate challenges thrown at us by the pandemic, we’re now having to navigate rising cost of living, inflation and economic uncertainty. Inflation has remained at a high average of 7% globally. Not only are labour, energy, and commodities becoming more expensive, guests are also feeling the pinch of the cost of living, impacting their ability to prioritise spending on hotel stays and experiences.
This means it’s important to think innovatively to grow and adapt. Global production and consumption have unfortunately some distance to go to come in line with ‘sustainability’ and ‘carbon reduction’ targets to help avoid the effects of full-blown climate change, including damage to biodiversity, loss of wildlife habitats and extinction of species. While there have been some outstanding examples in the Hotel & Accommodation sector of low environmental footprint properties, more across the board needs to be done... Introduction of a pragmatic, new approach to product manufacturing and procurement that positions nature before carbon but deals with both simultaneously is offering a way for us to avoid a bleaker future.
Addressing the climate challenge across all aspects of impacts on the environment, human health, circular economy, ethical labour supply, social and indigenous benefits, and innovation, progressive manufacturers have opted to test their products against the new Global GreenTag International NaturePositive+ (NP) Standard™ and seek a NaturePositive+ Declaration™ - a system that is scientifically and robustly assessing products to see, precisely, if they meet Nature Positive and Circular Economy goals for the global market.
David Baggs, lead developer of the NP+ Standard and CEO, Technical Director and Cofounder of Global GreenTag International, said: “What we learnt through the development of the Standard and proved in our first product to successfully achieve a NaturePositive+ award, is that, if manufacturers embrace a nature first approach in their production processes, then carbon issues will not be a problem. And by progression, reduce carbon output in building projects and properties as well.”
The NP+ Standard is a first in the certification field. Prior, there had not been a definitive framework for manufacturers to follow that tells us precisely what production processes and the use of products, including their disposal at end of life, is doing to, or for, nature. “There was a lack of nature-related and benefit metrics for products in the current approaches to the thinking, processes, and reporting of these issues,” says David.
The NP+ Standard and Product Declaration assessment system, requires full transparency and disclosure of product information, including ingredient toxicity. It is a certification pathway that enables manufacturers to drill down and physically see the impacts of their production processes. Uniquely, it also quantifies and highlights the benefits that are achieved in the preservation of nature. Ultimately to achieve the status of a NaturePositive+ product – ready for Circular Economy projects means that nature and climate is being restored in ‘net positive’ outcomes that result in carbon drawdown from the atmosphere.
Ultimately, says David, “a closer look at all products in the market is needed. Responsibility resides with the manufacturing and supply industries who provide products and materials that go into properties. Properties as well need to take more responsibility for biodiversity and climate repair in the products and materials they are procuring, be that for new builds and interior fit outs, systems for waste management, or cleaning products and personal care products for guests.”
“It is vital he adds, that a focus on the materials procured for properties are informed and independently vetted; that product information is based on scientifically rigorous and verified, third-party product information (and not just ‘face value’ product marketing gimmicks) to avoid the risks of falling for ‘product greenwashing’ – a prevailing issue in the market that buyers need to exercise more vigilance with, so they are not deceived by ‘sustainability’ or ‘green’ claims that are unsubstantiated, and hence are high risk.
Learn how to be more vigilant in product research across different product categories and a gain a deeper look at the Global GreenTag International NaturePositive+ Standard and Product Declaration as part of the Sustainable Hotel Summit.
