MEET YOUR KAITUHI Ngati Tuwharetoa, Ngati Raukawa Te Au ki te Tonga

Where did you grow up?

I was born and raised in the good ol’ Tron (Hamilton), the most beautiful city in New Zealand.

I have been immersed in Te Ao Maori my whole life, I attended Kohanga Reo o Nga Kuaka, Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Toku Mapihi Maurea and Wharekura. My whanau whakapapa all over the north island, but we call Taupo and a little small town called Otaki home. I would consider myself lucky with my upbringing because I was showered with aroha and manaakitanga from my big whanau, just like that saying “ It takes a village to raise a child “.

How has your life been impacted by Te Ao Maori?

My whanau recognized the importance of revitalising Te Reo Maori and Tikanga Maori through putting their children and mokopuna in Maori immersion schools. I had not realised until I started my journey here at Otago that it really is important for me to hold on to these taonga as they have grounded and guided me through my journey as a Maori here in a Pakeha dominated institution. I would say my Nanny was the biggest influence in my Te Ao Maori journey, being the only adult who could speak Te Reo, and she was the one who would always speak Te Reo Maori around us, giving us growlings when we aren’t thinking within a Te Ao Maori way (e.g. like sitting on tables, wearing hats while eating, sitting on pillows). I always used to get the old you are so lucky to be fluent in Te Reo, which I most certainly am.

What made you come to Otago?

I was fortunate enough to attend Hands on Otago back in 2016, and I absolutely loved what Otago had to offer me. I was fortunate enough to get scholarships to help me out a bit, and got accepted into the hall that I really wanted to be in, so coming to Otago was looking great. I was a bit nervous though because I did not have any friends from school who ventured south of Hamilton, but I did have tuakana who were already here and welcomed me with open arms.

I also liked the idea of moving away from home because I knew I wanted more independence and to do my own thing without getting an earful from my whanau all the time haha lol.

What has your experience at Otago been like?

It has been a full on rollercoaster to be honest. I came here with a plan A and B, and now i'm on Plan C which wasn’t even on the list haha. But I found my academic life to be a trial and error one. There are so many options but it’s just choosing the one that best fits your passion, one that you enjoy and one that fits your long term goals. My social life has been the best years of my life so far, I find it hard to pick a favourite year because all have been so great, and I mean GREAT. Even though I could probably be classed as a part-time student boozer (or even a full-time haha), as long as you do your mahi I don’t see a problem, but that's just me. I’ve made long life friends, great memories, spent the last $10 in my account on a nitro too many times, good grades and stopped going to fatty lane. But all in all, Otago has been the best years of my life.

What do you wish you knew before coming to Otago.

I wish that I knew of the different degrees that you can do here, I wish that I had planned earlier and talked with somebody about what I could study.

Uni is not always perfect, your plans don’t always go to plan, but that is 100% okay.

Hei whakakapinga ake, I hope my korero has enlightened you because university is much more than just going to class and getting degrees, it is about everything in between as well.

STUDY RETREAT 2021 Mānawa mai e te putanga o Matariki Mānawa mai e te mātahi o te tau Ngā mihi ki a tātou katoa i tēnei huringa Matariki.

Ngā hapa me ngā parau tukuna kia pāhemo atu ki muri, ā mua manakohia!

This semester we were very fortunate to have Araiteuru Marae host our tauira for our first study retreat of the year. The retreat was a massive success and it was awesome to have tauira of various levels of study from different backgrounds in university out there participating and getting some decent hours of study done before exam season came into full effect.

One major highlight of the retreat was having our kapa haka tutors come out for the afternoon to take our tauira through a kapa haka practice for Te Huinga Tauira. Although the practice was intended for huinga, other tauira were still able to participate in waiata and it was a great break from study for a lot of us. So a huge mihi to the talented Maaps, Kauri, and Tusi for coming out and taking the time to take us through mahi haka and waiata. Ko koutou ā runga!

Holding the retreat at one of our local marae ensured tikanga and kawa marae was on full display and it was amazing to see us all working together to ensure our whare was looked after, and our values were upheld accordingly. Anō te āhuareka o te noho ngātahi o te teina me te tuakana!

Another big mihi goes to our wahine from the exec who ran our kitchen and made sure all our tauira were fed well and kept warm at our whare.

The food was homely and we all left super satisfied. Also to our Āpiha Mātauranga, Awhi, for managing the accommodation for our noho as well as our bowling trip afterwards. The bowling trip was a cool way to wrap up our retreat and get our minds off of study for a while before exam season came into full effect! E mihi nui ana ki a koe e te tuahine.

BBQ W/ UOPISA For many Māori students at the University of Otago the relationships we create and maintain through our time here are very important. Whanaungatanga is a concept we value and treasure within Te Rōpū Māori, it gives us the opportunity to connect, teach and learn from each other as we move forward in breaking down many barriers that we face here at Otago. The same can be said for Te Rōpū Māori and UOPISA (University of Otago Pacific Island Students Association) As leaders in this space Melissa (UOPISA President) and I often find ourselves working together to overcome many challenges, therefore we know the importance of bringing Māori and Pacific Island students together once a semester to share kai, connect and relieve the stresses of exam season. On the 12th of June we hosted a BBQ lunch for all Māori and Pacific students studying at the University of Otago, and we hope our associations continue this tradition for many years to come. We want to thank everyone who came along and those who helped prepare our kai and set up the whare. Ko ngā whakamānawa nui ki a koutou katoa.

I have been an active member of Te Puna Kaitaka (TPK) since 2019, prior to being elected as tumuaki in late 2020. I decided to step out of my comfort zone and felt the need to give back to my rōpū. I am passionate about pharmacy and want to support tauira on their journey.

I was secretary for an OUSA affiliated club in 2020 and voted in for 2021 too. Therefore, after nomination for the role for Te Puna Kaitaka, I was happy to move into another secretary role as I was somewhat prepared and familiar with aspects of the position. I have been involved in this particular rōpū since the beginning of 2019, and appreciated the older tauira tautoko when I was P2 and P3. I want to now give back and help lead other tauira.

Why are you on the Exec: I was elected as Kaitiaki Pūtea for Te Puna Kaitaka in 2020 and decided to keep the role heading into 2021. I have always wanted to help my rōpū grow and also support the tauira whenever it is needed.

The origin of Matariki comes from the separation of Ranginui, the sky father and Papatūānuku, the earth mother also known as the Māori creation narrative. The many children of Ranginui and Papatūānuku lived in an eternal darkness smothered by their parents' embrace. What we know today as Atua Māori grew restless and were sick of sitting in darkness. Tāne-Mahuta proceeded to persuade his siblings to separate their parents so that they could finally see light. All were persuaded except one brother Tāwhirimātea, who was adamant that the separation of their parents would cause more harm than good. However, despite the pleas of Tāwhirimātea, TāneMahuta laid his back on his mother and stretched his legs and feet to his father and began to push with the help of the rest of his siblings. Their combined efforts and strength successfully separated Ranginui and Papatūānuku, but as both parents began to cry for each other, the children entered a world still with darkness and filled with water. Suddenly Tāwhirimātea reappeared to take revenge on his siblings for what they had done and one by one he fought and defeated all siblings except for Tūmatauenga, the God of war and humanity. Upon being defeated by Tūmatauenga, Tāwhirimātea ripped out his own eyes. He proceeded to crush his eyes with his hands and threw them to the chest of his father Ranginui. His crushed eyes were known as the first glimpse of light or stars to the world and was named Ngā Mata o te Ariki o Tāwhirimātea, the eyes of the God Tāwhirimātea. We now know this cluster to be Matariki.

NGĀ WHETŪ O MATARIKI Ko tā Matariki he whakakotahi i te tangata. Ko Matariki te ingoa o te kāhui, engari koia hoki te ingoa o te whetū e kī a nei koia te māmā. Koia hoki te whetū nui o te katoa. A ko tāna mahi he rangitāmiro ia tātou, kia āta whai whakaaro tātou ki o tātou hauora, me o tātou hononga ki te whānau me ngā hoa. Kua mōhiotia hoki tēnei whetū hei kaiwhakahaere o te kāhui. Ka arataki a Matariki i te kāhui i roto te rangi

Matariki hunga nui. Matariki brings people together. Matariki is not only the name of the cluster, but also a star recognised as the mother of the group. The largest star, Matariki bonds us together, signifying a time to reflect on our health and wellbeing and nurture connections with family and friends.

This star is also known as the kaiwhakahaere that holds the cluster together and guides it across the sky

Ko Pōhutukawa te mātāmua, a he wahine. He tapu tēnei whetū nā te mea ka hono ia i a tātou ki o tātou mate o te tau kua hipa. Ko tā Pōhutukawa he whakahiato i te hunga mate o te tau me te kawe ake i a rātou ki te rangi. Ko tō tātou aroha, o tātou pūmaharatanga, tō tātou pouritanga hei korowai mō rātou. He tohu tēnei whetū mō te mutunga o te tau.

Pōhutukawa, the eldest star is also a female, with the sacred role of connecting us to loved ones we have lost in the past year. Pōhutukawa gathers the spirits of those who have passed and takes them to the sky, with our love, grief and memories. This star also marks the end to a cycle, in particular the ending of the year.

Kei roto i te ingoa o tēnei whetū ōna hononga ki ngā kai e tipu ana i te whenua, arā i a Papatūānuku. Ko ngā kai ka hauhaketia, ko ngā kai ka kohia ka pērātia i roto i ngā mihi o te whatumanawa kia Tupuānuku. Ka kitea a Tupuānuku ka rere te manako kia ranea te kai. Ko Tupuānuku rāua ko Tupuārangi ngā whetū e kaha hono ana ki te kai, nā tērā ka noho ēnei whetū me tō rāua kotahi ki te taha maui o te kāhui kia pure mai.

This star’s name tells us that it is connected to all that grows with the ground, or Papatūānuku. Crops that can be harvested or gathered for food, coming from the soil are observed with Tupuānuku. We see hope for a bountiful year ahead in Tupuānuku. This star along with Tupuārangi are directly associated with food, therefore their stand alone placement to the right of the cluster has no sacred regard.

NGĀ WHETŪ O MATARIKI Ki te āta wherawhera koe i te ingoa Tupuārangi ka hīnātore te māramatanga he whetū tēnei e hangai ana ki ngā kai i te takiwā o Ranginui. Arā, ko ngā manu, ko ngā huarākau, ko ngā miro, ko nga kai kei runga ake i te whenua. E mahi tahi ana a Tupuārangi rāua ko Tupuānuku, koia ko te kauhanganuitanga, koia ko te kotahitanga. Ka noho ai a Tupuārangi i runga ake ia Tupuānuku nā te mea ko Rangi kei runga, a ko Papatūā’nuku’ kei raro.

The name of Tupuārangi tells us this star relates to food sourced from closer to Ranginui, the birds in the sky, fruits and berries, everything that grows in trees, or above the ground. The complementary nature of Tupuārangi and Tupuānuku reminds us of balance and sustainability. Keep in mind that Tupuārangi is always above Tupuānuku due to ‘rangi’ always being above.

Ko te rohe taiao e hono pūmau ana kia Waitī ko te wai Māori me ōna momo katoa. Arā, mai i ngā awa e ora nei te whenua me te tāngata, tae atu ki ngā koiora me ngā pātaka kai o parawhēnua mea. Ko Waitī te tohu o te oranga nui ka puta kia tātou i te wai Māori. Ka noho ai a Waitī ki runga ake o Waitā nā te mea ka rere whakararo te wai Māori ki te moana.

Fresh water is the domain of Waitī, in all its life-sustaining forms. From the streams that feed our land and our existence, to the organisms and food sources that reside within it, in Waitī we see the vitality that resides in fresh water.

Waitī is placed above Waitā due to fresh water always flowing down to salt water.

E hono pūmau ana te whārahitanga o te moana me ōna ahuatanga katoa kei roto, kia Waitā. He pātaka kai nui, he mana pōu e ora ai te tāngata. Ānei ko te wai tote o te moana e karekare atu nei kia Waitā. Koia tātou ka mihi nui ki tōna mana e toitū nei te ora kia tātou. Otirā ki tō tātou whenua tae atu ki te kai ka kohia e tatou i raro ia Waitā. Nā te aronga o Waitā rāua ko Waitī ki te kai kāre kau he tapu nō roto i tēnei wahanga o te kāhui.

The vast oceans and all they contain are reflected in Waitā. A rich and crucial source of food, the salt water seas are connected to Waitā and we acknowledge the role this force has in our lives, our land and the food we are able to gather when we herald Waitā. Waitā along with Waitī have a strong association to food therefore this part of the cluster is not sacred.

NGĀ WHETŪ O MATARIKI E hono ana tēnei whetū ki te kaha o te hau. He tino nui hoki te kauanuanutanga, te whakautetanga o ngā kaiwhakatere waka kia Ururangi. Ina koa me mārama rātou kia Ururangi kia pai ai tā rātou ahu haere i raro i tōna mana. Ka mihia a Ururangi i tōna kaha i roto i te ao, otirā i tāna wero mai, i tōna pure mai. Kei runga rawa te tūnga o Ururangi i roto i te kāhui nā te mea ka ahu mai ngā hau nō runga.

Connected to the power of the winds, Ururangi is revered by seafarers who know they must understand the winds in order to move under their force. In Ururangi we respect the impact of the wind on our lives, both cleansing and challenging. The placement of this star within the cluster recognises that wind comes from above therefore its placed highest.

Ko te ua e heke nei hei waiora mō te whenua me te tāngata, koia tēnei ko Waipuna-a-rangi. Arā, ko ngā wai e mapunapuna ana i te poho o Ranginui. Ko tā te mātanga he titiro kia Waipuna-a-rangi hei arahi i ana matapae mō ngā ua o te tau. Kia toko ai te ora ki te iwi i te waitoki o te rangi. Noho tata ana tēnei whetū kia Ururangi kia taurite ai he tāne, he wāhine.

The rain that offers life to our lands and people is embodied in Waipuna-ā-Rangi – the pools in the sky of Ranginui. The expert eye can look to Waipuna-ā-Rangi for guidance on the rains of the seasons ahead, which we depend upon for growth and health. This star is placed nearest to Ururangi to create a balance of male and female.

The youngest in the Kāhui, Hiwa-i-te-rangi shines as our wishing star, set with the purpose of granting our wishes and dreams for the year ahead. Sometimes known as Hiwa, this star holds our hopes, bringing us the opportunity to set our intentions and goals for a bright future. This star also marks new beginnings.

NGĀ WHETŪ O MATARIKI

I te wā o Matariki, pēnā e kaha ana te pīataata o ngā whetū, ko ngā tohu kei ia whetū he tohu pai, he tohu ka hua mai te ora. Engari, ki te kore e kaha te pīataata o ngā whetū, ehara tēnei i te tohu pai, arā, he tauaro kē te āhua o ngā hua. Ko Waitī, ko Waitā, ko Tupuārangi, ko Tupuānuku, ko Waipuna-a-rangi ngā whetū e hāngai ana ki te toiora o te tangata me ngā āhuatanga o te taiao, ā, ko Matariki kei waenga pū. Ko Pōhutukawa rāua ko Hiwa-i-te-rangi ngā whetū e hāngai ana ki te tapu. Ko te takotoranga o tēnei kāhui whetū he tohu mō te huringa o te tau ki tō te Māori titiro. Ka mutu, he mea hirahira a Matariki ki te poroaki i te tau tawhito, me te pōhiri mai i te tau hou me ōna hua.

If the stars of Matariki are bright then the areas of life that they are associated with will be prosperous and good, if they are dim or unable to be seen the result will be the opposite. Waitī, Waitā, Tupuārangi, Tupuānuku, Ururangi and Waipuna-a-rangi are the six stars associated with our well being and all the environmental elements that impact us and Matariki is centred in the middle. Pōhutukawa and Hiwa-i-te-rangi are associated with sacred matters. How the cluster is made is based on a whole structure of the Māori life in a yearly cycle and it was important to acknowledge the appearance of Matariki at the right time of the year to bring an ending to one year and look forward to a prosperous year.

PUANGA Ki ētahi iwi o Aotearoa, ko Puanga (Rigel i te reo Pākehā) te whetū e tohu ana i te tau hou Māori. He kaha nō ngā iwi o Whanganui, o Taranaki, me ētahi atu toronga o Te Taitokerau me Te Waipounamu, ki te tirotiro ki a Puanga.

Ko Puanga te whetū kaha nei te pīataata i ērā atu o te kāhui whetū, i a Tautoru. Ka kitea a Puanga i runga ake i a Tautoru. Ka mutu, hāunga anō a Matariki, ko ngā iwi e kaha aro ana ki a Puanga ka aro pū anō ki a ia hei tohu i te tau hou Māori, kaua ki a Matariki anake. Ko te take i pērā ai ērā iwi, ko te nohonga o Puanga i te rangi kei runga ake i a Matariki. Nā te teitei hoki o ngā maunga kei ērā iwi, ka whāitiiti te titiro, ā, anō nei kua kore a Matariki i te rangi. Ā, nā te teitei hoki o Puanga i te rangi ka māmā ake ai tōna kitenga. E ai ki ngā iwi nei, ka huri tō rātou titiro ki te uru, ki te whetū o Rēhua, ka tuku atu ai ngā wairua kino ki a ia. Ka mutu, ka huri atu anō ki a Puanga ki te whakanui i ngā pai me ngā hua o Puanga kia mātotoru ai ērā hua mō te tau e heke mai ana. Ko te kōrero nei nō te tirohanga o ngā iwi o Whanganui, nō reira ka rerekē pea ēnei kōrero ki ngā kōrero o iwi kē atu.

Puanga known to Pākehā as Rigel, is a star that is looked to by some iwi as a tohu that lets them know that the new year is upon us and has started. Puanga is most commonly looked at by those from the Aotea rohe, in particular Whanganui and Taranaki, as well as some in the far north and a few in areas of the South Island. Puanga is the brightest star of the Orion constellation and can be found sitting directly above Tautoru which is also known as Orion’s Belt. The iwi that utilise Puanga still look to Matariki for its tohu but look to Puanga to know when the year has started rather than Matariki. One reason for this (there are many) is that Puanga sits higher in the sky than Matariki and often due to the many maunga that surround these iwi, their view of Matariki can be blocked. Their view of Puanga however is more likely to be clear. It is said that these iwi turn to Rēhua to release all the negative wairua and things that have occured in the last year. After that they turn around to Puanga to celebrate all the good things and positive wairua to manifest it for the year to come. This kōrero on Puanga is coming from a Whanganui perspective and may differ from other iwi who celebrate Puanga.

HAUTAPU - TRADITIONAL CEREMONY

Ko “whāngai i te hau tapu” te roanga ake o te ingoa o tēnei tikanga o te Hautapu. Kia ea ai te Hautapu, me kohikohi i ngā kai e hāngai ana ki ngā whetū o Matariki, arā, ki a Tupuānuku, ki a Tupuārangi, ki a Waitī, ki a Waitā anō hoki, ā, ka tunua ai. Ko te mea nui me tunu ngā kai i te aranga mai o Matariki.

Hautapu also known as “whāngai i te hau tapu” is a ceremony performed during Matariki. During this ceremony kai from the four whetū directly related to food is cooked and offered to Matariki.

It's important to time your hautapu so that it is cooked by the time Matariki rises.

Anei ngā whetū me ngā kai e tika ana mō te Hautapu.

Here are the stars and the kai that correspond to what should be cooked.

Tupuānuku - Ko ngā kai ā Papatūānuku, pēnei me te kūmara me te rīwai.

Something from the earth, traditionally a Kūmara but a Rīwai (Potato) is fine to use

Tupuārangi - Ko ngā kai nō te rangi. Tōnā tikanga rā he kererū, engari ka pai tonu tonu te heihei, te rakiraki rānei i ēnei rā.

Traditionally this would be a Kererū however a heihei or a duck will suffice.

Waitī - Ko ngā kai ēnei nō te wai Māori. He tuna, he taraute, he kōura wai Māori, he hāmana rānei nō te toa.

Something from fresh water, tuna (eel), trout, fresh water crayfish or even a bit of salmon from the supermarket.

Waitā - Ko ngā ika ēnei nō te moana. Pēnei me te tāmure, te tarakihi, me ērā momo kai.

Any fish from the ocean such as tāmure (snapper), tarakihi, or any that you can get.

Ko te karakia e whai ake nei mō te wā o te Hautapu. Whai muri i te takinga o tēnei karakia, ka tangohia ngā taupoki mai i ngā kai, ā, ka rere te koromamao ki runga ki te rangi hei whāngai i a Matariki.

The following karakia on the next page is appropriate to be used during a Hautapu ceremony.

After this karakia has been recited remove any lids or covering of the kai and let the steam rise up to Matariki to nourish and sustain.

LUNAR CALENDAR - TANGAROA PHASES

Ko te wāhanga o Tangaroa te tīmatanga o te hauwhā whakamutunga o te marama. Ko Tangaroa-a-mua, ko Tangaroa-a-roto, ko Tangaroa Whakapau, ā, ko Tangaroa-a-kiokio whai muri i a ia. Tangaroa a-mua is the beginning of the last quarter of the moon. This moon phase is followed by Tangaroa a-roto, then Tangaroa Whakapau and lastly by Tangaroa a-kiokio. These phases are the four phases of the Tangaroa period of the maramataka. As the Tangaroa period is the last quarter, the amount of moon visible to us becomes less and less each day until it reaches Whiro which is the new moon. It is a high energy period and is the most prosperous period of the lunar calendar. It ensures that any food available is in abundance so that the hākari dedicated and celebrated in the name of Puanga/Matariki is recognised appropriately. During this time we are encouraged to undertake karakia, rituals and other things that allow us to move collectively as an iwi/hapū/whānau and be productive by making use of this energy.

HOW TO FIND MATARIKI

Pēnā ko te hiahia kia kitea a Matariki, me oho moata, ā, me tiro ki te rāwhiti. Kimihia a Tautoru, tōna hanga he rite ki tētahi kōhua. Kātahi rā ia ka kitea, whakawhiti te titiro whakatemauī kia tōtika atu ki tētahi kāhui whetū he koeko te hanga. Ko tēnei kāhui whetū e kīa nei ko Taumata-kuku, ko Te Kokotā rānei. Piri ana ki te taha mauī o Te Kokotā ka kitea a Matariki.

Wake up early and look in the sky towards the east. Look for the constellation Orion's belt which is commonly known to look like a pot. Māori know this constellation as Tautoru. Once you’ve found it, follow it in a line towards your left and you’ll find a pyramid-shaped cluster of stars. This is known as Taumata-kuku or Te Kōkota. And once you've found this cluster just a little to the left you’ll find Matariki.
