Hillside Campus Now Open

angible signs of growth and success are visible on what was once a grass-covered hilltop behind the parking lot of DePaul Cristo Rey High School. The first building in the campus expansion project opened in early September following a summer of intense site preparation, foundation building and construction. Classes and labs are now taught daily in this science building. The office of the new assistant principal, Deena Carey, is also located there.

The science building is the first of three buildings that comprise DPCR’s new hillside campus. The buildings were purchased from Cincinnati Public Schools with a grant from the SC Ministry Foundation. At DPCR they have concrete foundations and have been renovated and landscaped as permanent structures. The second building opened a few weeks after the first; it has additional classrooms as well as a counseling center, admissions and business offices. Work will continue on building three to open next school year with more classrooms and offices. The hillside campus also includes 50 additional parking spaces.

“When we added a third class of students in August, we had outgrown the current classroom capacity of our two existing buildings. To accommodate our growing student population and plan for next year when we will be a full four-year high school, we developed our campus expansion plan under the guidance of the Facilities Committee of our Board of Directors,” explains Sister Jeanne Bessette, president.

DPCR students are giving the expansion rave reviews. “The new Science Building is more spacious and gives us lots of room for lab experiments,” explains junior Nichole F. “I like having classes in more than one building and moving around campus seems more like college to me,” she adds.

Help DPCR Students to “Dream Big” A new scholarship program offers supporters the opportunity to help DePaul Cristo Rey students “dream big.” Through the Dream Big Scholarship Fund, donors can provide a full, half or partial scholarship for a student, supporting the dreams and plans of a promising young person. At other Catholic high schools some students receive financial aid to assist with their tuition; at DPCR all students need and receive significant financial assistance. No student is denied admission or released once enrolled if their family can’t pay. In addition to their Corporate Work Study Program earnings, all DPCR students need between $3,000 and $5,000 annually to fund their education.

The Dream Big Scholarship Fund will provide specific dollars to cover those costs. Watch for more information in the weeks ahead on this new opportunity to support a student and fund a dream.

College Readiness is the Culture at DPCR

“College preparatory” is the most common description given for DePaul Cristo Rey’s academic program. However, as new students learned this summer, college preparatory means more than academics; it’s a mindset and a culture that are fostered from day one.

When the newest DPCR students arrived on campus for CORE (Corporate Office Readiness Enrichment) training, they found that this summer orientation program is more than job training and academic preparation. CORE included an introduction to college counseling and field trips to the College of Mount St. Joseph and Miami University.

Sophomores and juniors continued their immersion in DPCR’s college-going culture by attending summer programs. Groups of students traveled to the Cristo Rey Health Professions Summit at the University of Missouri and Wheeling Jesuit University’s Summer Career and Cultural Program. DPCR faculty and staff accompanied students on both of these trips, further evidence of the entire staff’s commitment to student success. Almost all DPCR students will be first generation college students in their families.

Another sign of that commitment is the addition of a full-time college counselor. Maureen Baldock supports all students, and most particularly the juniors, through the college search and application process. She brings to DPCR more than 30 years of experience in high school administration and counseling. Mrs. Baldock and Counselor Jessica Smith are now housed in the new Counseling Center in building two of the hillside campus.

New Partners and Nonprofit Opportunities in Corporate Work Study Program DPCR students began this school year with new work opportunities thanks to many new Corporate Partners and Sponsors in the Corporate Work Study Program.

Corporate Partners pay a fee-for-service to have DPCR students work at their company. Through Corporate Sponsorship, businesses or individuals fund students’ work at local nonprofit organizations. This win-win-win opportunity gives students valuable work experience, provides nonprofits additional office assistance they can’t otherwise afford, and gives Corporate Sponsors the opportunity to support the CWSP program even if their own company can’t provide meaningful work for students. CR architecture + design joined the Corporate Work Study Program this school year with two DPCR students working at its downtown Cincinnati office. Yet thanks to this company’s generosity, it’s not only two students who benefit from the firm’s partnership with DPCR.
