Jane Seymour joins ‘The Kominsky Method’ for Season 2 of Netflix comedy By George Dickie Viewers may find themselves not recognizing ever-youthful-looking 68-year-old actress Jane Seymour under a wig of long gray hair in Season 2 of Netflix’s ‘‘The Kominsky Method.” Evidently, her co-star, longtime friend and ex-neighbor Michael Douglas didn’t. ‘‘I’m standing there and he puts out his hand and says, ‘Hello, I’m Michael,’ ” Seymour recalls. ‘‘And I looked at Michael, I said, ‘You really don’t know who I am? It’s Jane,’ and he literally freaked out. I don’t know who he thought I was. I mean, he had read the scene. The only other old person in the scene would be me but he absolutely could not believe it was me. And actually a lot of people who have seen the show don’t really recognize me in it because of the gray wig.” Seymour joins the Chuck Lorre-created comedy, which begins streaming Friday, Oct. 25, in the role of Madelyn, a recent widow who reconnects with her old flame from 50 years ago, Norman (Alan Arkin), the testy widowed agent of aging thespian-turned-acting coach Sandy Kominsky (Douglas). Sandy also has someone re-entering his life, French ex-spouse Gabrielle (Jacqueline Bisset, ‘‘Dancing on the Edge”), who still delights in pushing his buttons, even as his relationship with his current love interest Lisa (Nancy Travis) moves forward. And Sandy’s daughter Mindy (Sarah Baker) has a new significant other as well, Martin (Paul Reiser, ‘‘Mad About You”), a ponytailed former high-school teacher who’s closer to Sandy’s age than hers. As Norman gets reacquainted with his new/old flame, daughter Phoebe (Lisa Edelstein) comes out of rehab, intent on turning her life around and regaining her father’s trust. But his intense anger

Though they had never worked together before, Seymour reports their chemistry was immediate but she adds that Arkin needed to resolve one issue before filming began. ‘‘He was very concerned because he was going to be playing love scenes ... and he wanted his wife to be comfortable with it,” Seymour says. ‘‘So one of the first things that happened was we all went out for a lovely brunch and kind of got to know one another. And I thought that was so sweet. ... ‘‘But he is fantastic. He’s great to work with and always right there and his delivery is impeccable. Helen Mirren rules again in HBO’s ‘Catherine the Great’ By Jay Bobbin Though she says she likes to ‘‘mix things up,” Helen Mirren isn’t surprised that royal roles continue to come her way. The winner of both an Oscar (for ‘‘The Queen”) and a Tony Award (for ‘‘The Audience”) as Queen Elizabeth II, plus an Emmy (one of her three to date) for ‘‘Elizabeth I,” the esteemed actress and British Dame signed up as an executive producer as well as the star of HBO’s four-part series ‘‘Catherine the Great,” premiering Monday, Oct. 21. The saga traces the 19th-century Russian empress’ lusty romance with Grigory Potemkin (Jason Clarke) and their efforts to modernize their country as Catherine’s long reign nears its end. ‘‘The filming was absolutely remarkable,” the pleasant Mirren says. ‘‘I was in Lithuania for most of the shoot, then we had the incredible chance to travel into Russia and shoot in Catherine’s palace. To be on the location where this history took place was pretty extraordinary. These people led such
intense lives, you can’t imagine how they got through it day to day.” Mirren had worked with ‘‘Catherine the Great’s” writer, Nigel Williams, on ‘‘Elizabeth I” earlier. She deems him ‘‘very knowledgeable and very good at research. At the same time, research alone doesn’t do it for these sorts of pieces; you have to find the human story. I’d also worked before with the director, Philip Martin (who won an Emmy for the Mirren-starring ‘Prime Suspect: The Final Act’) -- so I had great confidence in them to create something entertaining, true to history, watchable and revelatory.” Having access to some of the many letters written by Catherine also benefited Mirren, who found her ‘‘a very natural writer. It wasn’t formal, even if she was writing to ambassadors about official business. She wrote with a great ease, and you could really sense her personality. That was a wonderful resource.”

‘‘Catherine the Great” isn’t this fall’s only project for Mirren. The wife of director Taylor Hackford (‘‘An Officer and a Gentleman”), she also stars with Ian McKellen in next month’s theatrical movie ‘‘The Good Liar,” a twist-and-turnfilled con-artist tale. Such a project underscores Mirren’s taste for variety, also marked by such departures as her work in the ‘‘Fast and Furious” and ‘‘Red” action franchises. ‘‘For a long time, I was a policewoman on ‘Prime Suspect,’ ” she notes, ‘‘and after that, I was very keen to show that I didn’t just play that (profession). And after ‘The Queen,’ I was keen to show that I didn’t just play monarchs. The reality, though, is that monarchs often are very good roles. Their lives are momentous and full of drama, but I’ve really tried to get away from being someone who just plays queens.” Helen Mirren stars in ‘‘Catherine the Great,” premiering Monday on HBO.

Food Network and Cooking Channel celebrate Halloween with some boo!-tiful treat ideas
By George Dickie Unless you’ve been stranded on a South Pacific island a la Tom Hanks in ‘‘Cast Away,” you’re probably well aware by now that Halloween comes next week. To get you in the proper state of culinary mind, Food Network and Cooking Channel have concocted a schedule rife with ideas for what to prepare and serve on or around the holiday. So sit back, turn on the TV and take in the tips, tricks and recipes that their experts have to offer. Probably the most noteworthy entry on this week’s schedule comes up Monday, Oct. 21, on Cooking, when Carla Hall hosts the hourlong special ‘‘Trick or Eat,” in which the chef and author ventures to stops in Atlanta, New Orleans and Salem, Mass., to sample such trickedout treats as zombie burgers, Franken-chops and freak shakes. Hard to say ‘‘boo!” to these options. Also in the holiday mood is Guy Fieri, who on his
Saturday, Oct. 26, episode of Food’s ‘‘Guy’s Ranch Kitchen,” invites in Amanda Freitag to prepare a red hot blood orange margarita with spicy cinnamon syrup and smoked, deep-fried chicken wings coated in hot sauce and pomegranate molasses; Marc Murphy to make orange-and-black caviar-covered deviled eggs and a cheesy risotto served in an acorn squash; and Christian Petroni for a tenderoni pizza with hot honey and a fire-roasted brococolini sprinkled with sweet and tart preserved lemon. Halloween eats have never been so upscale. Also that afternoon on Food, Trisha Yearwood of ‘‘Trisha’s Southern Kitchen” is taking on a Roaring Twenties look for her Ghoulish Gatsby Party, during which she will serve up such offerings as a festive fruit gelatin mold, crunchy fried olives, shrimp cocktail with dipping sauces, and spider web deviled eggs, all washed down with an apple champagne cocktail suitable for toasting.

If competition shows are your thing, Food Network has you covered, starting with Monday’s penultimate episode of ‘‘Halloween Baking Championship,” in which the four remaining bakers are tasked with creating desserts with a grave-robber theme and sculpting a marbled tomb cake. On the Sunday, Oct. 20, edition of ‘‘Halloween Wars,” the teams of three must create displays that show how holiday mascots like Santa and the Easter Bunny do trick-or-treating, with actor Jackson Rathbone (the ‘‘Twilight” movies) serving as a guest judge alongside regulars Shinmin Li and Todd Tucker. And immediately following on ‘‘Haunted Gingerbread Showdown,” ‘‘The Mummy’s Ancient Curse” is in effect as host Clinton Kelly challenges three gingerbread artists to tell a story of mummies run amok. Talked out: The fate of Steve Harvey’s self-named show By Jay Bobbin Q: I’ve been looking for Steve Harvey’s talk show and can’t find it. Where is it? -Monica Hale, via e-mail A: It’s gone. Effectively, what happened was that Kelly Clarkson’s new series -which has been getting some of the most significant ratings any syndicated daytime show has won in a while -- took over the time period Harvey had occupied, at least on NBC’s own owned-and-operated stations. NBC also produced Harvey’s talk show and now produces Clarkson’s, so the writing was pretty much on the wall, as even Harvey himself acknowledged before his cancellation became official. Of course, Harvey still remains a force in
syndication via ‘‘Family Feud” and also a prominent entertainment figure through his many other ventures. Lately, he’s added to those an equity stake in the ownership of the cable networks HDNet Movies and AXS TV. Q: I knew Ruth Wilson wasn’t returning to ‘‘The Affair,” but why did Joshua Jackson leave before the end of the series? -- Kate Harris, Scranton, Pa. A: Reportedly, he had been considering leaving the Showtime drama for a while -he was continuing on a season-by-season basis -- and the departure of Wilson’s Alison actually facilitated his exit as her ex-husband Cole (though they’ve both appeared since in flashbacks drawn from earlier episodes). The characters have lived on in a
way via the fifth and final season’s future-set sequences featuring Anna Paquin as the couple’s grown daughter Joanie, who’s probing her parents’ history.
