Hallmark Channel offers Kristin Chenoweth’s ‘Christmas Love Story’ By Jay Bobbin This year, it’s appropriate that both Christmas and Chenoweth start with ‘‘Ch.” Emmy- and Tony-winner Kristin Chenoweth will have a big television presence over the next several weeks, which also services her recently released album ‘‘For the Girls,” saluting a number of iconic female artists. She’s among the performers on ABC’s annual ‘‘CMA Country Christmas” special Tuesday, Dec. 3; she joins the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on their yearly PBS offering Monday, Dec. 16 (check local listings); and she stars with Scott Wolf (‘‘Nancy Drew”) in Hallmark Channel’s new Hallmark Hall of Fame drama ‘‘A Christmas Love Story” Saturday, Dec. 7. In the movie, Chenoweth’s character is musically inclined: She’s a youth choir director whose desire to use a talented substitute (Kevin Quinn) in a Christmas Eve show is challenged by his father (Wolf), a widower who wants his son focused on getting into college. Things change as the two adults become mutually attracted, but something they don’t know could impact their budding romance. Actor Eric Close (‘‘Without a Trace”) directed the film. Chenoweth’s former ‘‘GCB” co-star Jennifer Aspen is a ‘‘Christmas Love Story” producer, ‘‘and we had this idea for a movie and they bought it,” reports the ever-lively Chenoweth. ‘‘The subject matter is very close to my heart, then getting to write music with Chely Wright was a bucket-list item, because I’ve never had a song that I’ve written in a movie before. I never thought, ‘I have to make a Hallmark Hall of Fame film,’ but they responded to it, and that’s what I wanted.”

Kristin Chenoweth stars in Saturday’s new Hallmark Hall of Fame drama ‘‘A Christmas Love Story” on Hallmark Channel. Having Wolf as her ‘‘Christmas Love Story” leading man appealed to Chenoweth. ‘‘First of all, he’s easy on the eyes,” she says, ‘‘but we’ve become friends. We just hit it off so well, and he’s so much fun. I think that

not a lot of people know how funny he is, and being silly on the set with him and making this story come to life with him, I’m so glad he was my partner in this. I adore him.” The busy itinerary kept by Chenoweth in recent weeks (‘‘I’m not sleeping!,” she claims) has included concerts around the country ... plus her November return to Broadway in a limited-run show built around ‘‘For the Girls,” her tribute to Dolly Parton (a guest on the album), Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland among many others. ‘‘This is a new lane for me,” she reflects, ‘‘tipping my hat to singers I grew up with and loved, but also, it’s all over the map. You have Carole King and Lesley Gore and Linda Ronstadt (represented). I didn’t set out to make a female-empowerment album, I just knew there were certain songs I wanted to sing.” Follis Crow, President

Christmas in Hawaii isn’t all glee for Lea Michele in ABC movie By Jay Bobbin Since she has both a new album and a new TV movie that celebrate Christmas, Lea Michele surely is in a seasonal frame of mind. Filming in Hawaii held much allure for the ‘‘Glee” and ‘‘Scream Queens” alum as she made ‘‘Same Time, Next Christmas,” which ABC debuts Thursday, Dec. 5. Echoing the late Bernard Slade’s play ‘‘Same Time, Next Year,” the tale casts Michele as a woman who’s reunited with her childhood love (Charles Michael Davis) in the islands during a family vacation at the holidays. Their timing is still ‘‘off,” though, a problem that goes on to plague them even more despite their obvious sparks. Nia Vardalos (‘‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding”) and George Newbern (‘‘Scandal”) play the Michele character’s parents in the picture directed by Stephen Herek (‘‘Mr. Holland’s Opus”). Though she appeared in ‘‘New Year’s Eve” and the

‘‘Glee” concert movie, ‘‘Same Time, Next Christmas” marks Michele’s first starring movie role. ‘‘It’s such an awesome opportunity,” the pleasant performer says. ‘‘Initially, I was so romanced by the thought of doing a movie in Hawaii for a month, I didn’t really process the fact that it would be on my shoulders ... but I think we put together something enjoyable and wonderful. ‘‘Sort of the routine that I’ve had for the past couple of years,” Michele explains, ‘‘is that I’ll take a few months to a year to focus primarily on music, then the next year will be acting, then the year after that will be back to music. It’s always a bit of a process for me to get the muscles moving again, though every ‘Glee’ episode was like a movie in and of itself. So much was required, I really felt up to the task with this film. And it was wonderful to be acting again.” Making ‘‘Same Time, Next Christmas” followed Michele’s recording of ‘‘Christmas in the City,” which also

GLASGOW DAILY TIMES

features vocals by her ‘‘Glee” colleague Darren Criss, her Broadway ‘‘Spring Awakening” co-star Jonathan Groff and Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo (lately of the movie ‘‘Harriet”). Michele also co-wrote a new tune for the album, comprised otherwise of seasonal classics. ‘‘It’s going to be like a 10-month Christmas for me by the time we actually get to the holiday,” she muses, also factoring in several mid-December concerts she’ll stage in New York (plus her appearance on NBC’s ‘‘Christmas in Rockefeller Center” Wednesday, Dec. 4). Now married to clothing-company chief Zandy Reich, Michele reflects, ‘‘‘It’s always been my dream to make a holiday record, and to pair it with this great film and end the year with these concerts, it’s a wonderful time in my life and in my career. I feel really grateful.”

Tastemade’s ‘Cooking With Pride’ serves up food knowledge with a side of LGBTQ talk

By George Dickie Since time immemorial, food has served as an excellent entry point into just about any discussion. And in the case of Tastemade’s ‘‘Cooking With Pride,” that topic is LGBTQ. Currently streaming on Facebook Watch, the series takes host and online content creator Ingrid Nilsen on a culinary journey, guided by accomplished chefs or food experts who like her identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual or queer, who demonstrate how to make a particular food or dish while discussing issues facing the LGBTQ community. So in one episode, she might talk about how to make the kitchen a safe space with Connecticut chef Mac Elliot Jarvis while preparing shakshuka, a popular Middle Eastern dish. In another, she’ll speak with chef and cannabis rights advocate Jeff Danzer about the linked histories of cannabis and gay rights. And in still another, Los Angeles sausage maker Erin

O’Brien goes start to finish in showing Nilsen how to make the linked pork product while discussing the process’ unavoidably sexual nature. ‘‘The sausage-making experience was completely new to me,” Nilsen, a home cook who has no formal training, admits, ‘‘because ... I’ve never actually been present for the start-to-finish process of making it. And realizing just how intensive it is but also intentional, learning about how there is fat incorporated into the mixture and how you have to be so intentional throughout the entire process. ... ‘‘And I think this is really special because we were hearing a personal story from Erin and it also involved queer sexuality ... and I think topics that people are typically just uncomfortable with in general. But then you add in the layer of queerness to it and people are even more afraid of it because they’re not sure what to do with it. And I just loved how open Erin was about having this conversation and how unapologetic she was about

the process of making sausage being inherently sexual. And that was one of the reasons why she likes the process so much because there’s really no skirting around it and so it kind of encourages that conversation.” Later in the season, Nilsen welcomes in Ariane Resnick, a Los Angeles-based private chef and nutritionist, to make a craft cocktail and talk about taking back ownership of Valentine’s Day. ‘‘A lot of people have a complicated relationship with something like Valentine’s Day,” Nilsen says, ‘‘where it often feels like it is this consumerist holiday, and her perspective was wanting to reclaim that for herself and create her own Valentine’s Day experience, especially as someone in the LGBTQ community. She talks about experiences where she might go out on Valentine’s Day and didn’t really feel like she saw herself in any of the experiences, and so this recipe was about like reclaiming and redefining what Valentine’s Day means for her. And I think that’s something that’s really powerful.”

Fading to Black: A co-star’s recent ‘NCIS: New Orleans’ exit By Jay Bobbin Q: Why did ‘‘NCIS: New Orleans” kill off the character Lasalle? -- Gary Rhodes, via e-mail A: We’ve expectedly gotten plenty of queries about the CBS drama’s huge move that obviously caught fans by surprise. While a definitive reason for founding cast member Lucas Black’s departure hasn’t been given, there are some clues. The actor had indicated in an interview that there were ‘‘priorities” that he had sacrificed to work on the show on location over the five-plus years of his run on it, and he said he wanted to get back to those. (He and his attorney wife have three children.) Also,

he apparently is returning to the ‘‘Fast & Furious” movie franchise, and it’s more than likely that the schedules for that and ‘‘NCIS: New Orleans” would have collided. Thus, a choice would have to be made, and the death of Lasalle suggests that Black may have made it in favor of doing the film. Q: I know ‘‘Arrow” is in its final season, but how much longer will it be on the air? -- Mike Harris, Providence, R.I. A: Not much longer. The show’s value to The CW is evident in that the crossover events that unite the network’s DC Comics-related series -- such as the new ‘‘Crisis on Infinite Earths,” which begins on ‘‘Supergirl” Dec. 8 -- often are referred to as ‘‘Ar-

rowverse” projects. The second phase of ‘‘Crisis” will begin on ‘‘Arrow” Jan. 14, then the series will have only two weeks left, wrapping up on Jan. 28. ‘‘Arrow” production already has wrapped up, with title star Stephen Amell among those who have tweeted emotional messages about saying goodbye to the cast and crew after eight seasons. Q: What was the song that was heard in the closing scene of ‘‘The Affair”? -- Erin Delaney, via e-mail A: It was a cover version of ‘‘The Whole of the Moon” that was recorded specially for the Showtime series’ finale by Fiona Apple, who also wrote and performed the show’s theme

GLASGOW DAILY TIMES

song (‘‘Container”). Originally done (in ao version also heard in that ‘‘Affair” episode)a by The Waterboys in the mid-1980s, ‘‘The Whole of the Moon” also has been coveredt by many other artists including Prince, Thet Killers and Mandy Moore. t Q: Will there be another season of ‘‘Veron-s ica Mars”? -- Tom Draper, Rutherford, N.J. E A: As of this writing, a fifth round isn’t im-K mediately on the horizon, but series creator‘ and executive producer Rob Thomas thinks itb could happen somewhere down the line. Hef has reasoned that since his work on ‘‘iZom-t bie” is over, and title star Kristen Bell has finished production on NBC’s ‘‘The GoodB Place,” it might be easier to find a windowD

GLASGOW DAILY TIMES

of time that would accommodate everyone’s )availability. e Despite having no order for a fifth season dthere, Thomas referenced his ‘‘very positive” dealings with Hulu, which presented the fourth ‘‘Veronica” season and also has -streamed the original three. And co-star Enrico Colantoni -- alias Veronica’s father -Keith -- reflected to us in an interview that r‘‘it’s never really over” for the show, also tborne out by the movie version that was efunded through a Kickstarter campaign. So, time will tell. s Q: Please help settle a bet. Did Warren dBeatty ever do a TV series? -- Jean Hayes, Deland, Fla.

A: Though he’s principally known for his movie work, the Oscar winner (for directing the 1981 epic ‘‘Reds”) started his career on the home screen, encompassing a first-season stint on ‘‘The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis” as Milton Armitage, a wealthy and annoying nemesis of Dwayne Hickman’s title character. Beatty appeared in only a relative handful of episodes, since his film and stage careers were poised to take off at that point. During the 1950s, Beatty (the brother of the also-famous Shirley MacLaine) also acted on such celebrated anthology series as ‘‘Studio One” and ‘‘Playhouse 90,” but his fortunes rested elsewhere as the 1960s began. He earned a Tony Award nomination for

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2019-13

his one Broadway role, in ‘‘A Loss of Roses” by William Inge -- whose writing also fueled Beatty’s movie debut in the highly regarded 1961 drama ‘‘Splendor in the Grass.” After that, filmmaking had Beatty’s near-complete professional attention, whichever side of the camera he was working on (or, often, both sides simultaneously).
