Dear Friends & Family, The quote from Michael Jordan, “It’s not about the shoes, it’s what you do in them,” best describes the journey of our women and children. For many, shoes give us the support we need to walk with our head held high and conquer the day. For others, they’re more of an accessory to an outfit in a social media post. For our Mercy Center clients, shoes provide the opportunity to move forward in their journey with conviction and strength for a promising future. In 2020-2021, we all faced COVID-19 and difficult decisions. What would we do in our shoes to serve others who struggle normally, without a pandemic? One thing became apparent and that was the Erie Community came together in this time of need. Day-to-day activity was greatly altered at the Mercy Center, as our top priority was to maintain a safe and healthy environment for our women and children. Although our clients couldn’t travel to see family and friends, through the generous support of donors, businesses, and restaurants, their holiday season was made joyous and filled with gratitude. Despite a tumultuous year, our clients graduated from drug treatment court, received their GEDs and reunified with their children. Many “firsts” were taken in their shoes to achieve these remarkable accomplishments and we all learned to become self-sufficient and strong.

The Mercy Center mission will never change. It will always provide a home filled with love, understanding, opportunities and future. In this report you will read inspiring stories from our clients on their persistence and willingness to fight through their addiction, domestic violence, and homelessness. We are grateful to each of you for your generous giving to the Mercy Center for Women. You shared your treasures during difficult times with one purpose: to serve others. We value our donors for believing and committing to the Mercy mission. We have been educated through your generous giving—“that happiness starts within your soul.” Never lose sight of your vision. Your shoes will carry you there with the help from God and others. Smile, Pray, Be Kind,

Jennie Hagerty Executive Director

The Mercy Center launched and exceeded a $2.5 million capital campaign goal last year as we partnered with community donors to restore a former school building into residential and community collaborations. Our cabinet members walked hundreds of miles in their shoes to deliver a story with a joyful ending—our goal realized and new possibilities just around the corner.

“It’s not about the shoes, it’s what you do in them.” Michael Jordan Jennie Hagerty, MCW Executive Director, with children of the Mercy Center

Amanda’s Story Always the “wild card” and rebellious one in her family, Amanda’s one decision to take drugs would lead to a series of consequences that would forever change her life. Amanda would eventually become pregnant and because of her drug use, would have to turn over her baby girl from the hospital to complete strangers. Vayda, Amanda’s only child, would spend her first six months being raised by her foster parents Emma and David, with limited time spent with her mother.

It’s been almost a year that Amanda and Vayda, now two, have been at the Mercy Center. As her graduation nears, Amanda realizes she will likely always need to work on her recovery. Her next step, now that she is working, is finding an apartment and creating a real home for Vayda and herself. “I can’t wait,” she says enthusiastically.

Amanda does have family who was willing to temporarily raise Vayda until the courts allowed her to have custody. But because Vayda’s birth was on the weekend, the Office of Children and Youth could not perform a home study, so Vayda needed an immediate place to live. Enter David and Emma, Vayda’s foster parents, who would give Vayda a loving home until Amanda was healthy enough to get her back. But that arrangement would last much longer than Amanda had anticipated. Amanda soon entered a drug treatment program but due to COVID-19, inperson visits with Vayda had stopped and she could only visit her via Skype for the next three months. “Vayda’s foster parents would tell me stories about her milestones and we would talk about her progress as I watched her on the camera,” Amanda recalls. “It was hard to bond with my 6-month-old child on the other side of a screen,” she says. After completing the treatment program, Amanda then lived in a halfway house. Finally, three months later, Amanda and Vayda were granted unification and eventually Amanda gained custody of her daughter.

Vayda’s foster parents David and Emma continue to be a positive influence in Amanda’s and Vayda’s lives.

Amanda’s Reflections What are you most proud of? “I am very proud of my progress, big and small. I feel I have achieved so much the past two years and have great hope for my future. Seeing my Mercy Center family at my drug treatment court graduation meant the world to me. I’ll never forget that feeling of love and accomplishment.” What are your goals? “I’d like to secure housing, stay involved in my program and go back to school for an English degree.” What has the Mercy Center taught you? “The Mercy Center has taught me independence and the resources I need for a successful future. It has restored my sense of security and hope.” In what way are you different now than when you first came to the Mercy Center? “When I first came here, I felt alone and afraid of how I was going to begin my journey through motherhood. I’m ready now. I’m not a single mother, I’m a super mother!”

“We greatly enjoyed having Amanda in the program. It makes all of us happy when our graduates succeed.” Judge John J. Mead

Renee’s Story “My story is about me finding myself,” Renee said. “I’m not in survival mode anymore… Now I can relax and enjoy life.” Renee’s addiction and lack of income led her to giving up custody of her oldest child, Annabelle, early on. This was not an easy decision, but it was best for her daughter at the time. When Renee became pregnant a few years later with her second child, Elijah, she initially denied the Mercy Center services, but when she could not financially support herself, she embraced the opportunity. In the beginning, she was hesitant about the program due to the strict housing rules, but she found those rules are what kept her sober. Renee took this opportunity to focus on herself and her relationship with Elijah. “I missed a lot of my daughter’s life when she was Elijah’s age because of my addiction,” Renee said. “Being here and having the time to focus on me allowed me to spend all my time with Elijah. I’ve been able to create a strong bond with him – I never got that with Annabelle.” A few months into the program, Renee had the opportunity to get back into Annabelle’s life. With the help of a lawyer financially supported by the Mercy Center, Renee was reunited with Annabelle. She went from not seeing her daughter at all, to supervised visits, to overnights with Annabelle at the Mercy Center. These visits meant everything to Renee because she was finally able to bond with both of her children while being sober. Today, Renee has been sober for 22 months, recently moved into her new apartment with Elijah, and hopes to be reunified with Annabelle later this year.

Now that Renee knows how to handle her finances, cope with her mental health, and maintain healthy relationships, she has time to put herself and her children first. Not being in survival mode has allowed her to spend time with friends, crochet, and most importantly, bond with her children. Renee considers the Mercy Center to be the rock that she was able to build her home upon and she thanks the center for teaching her how to enjoy her life.

Renee’s Reflections What are you most proud of? “I am most proud of my sobriety… Both of my kids spent a birthday here, and I consider my sobriety to be my greatest gift to them.” What are your goals? “My main goal was to have an income because I came here without one. I take classes online and get certifications through St. Benedict’s. I took a retail industry course and am proud to be educated again. I used to hate school, but now I want to go back and create more opportunities for myself.” What has the Mercy Center taught you? “I’m very thankful for the Mercy Center because sometimes you feel like you’re out of chances, but they taught me that I’m never out of chances. You don’t have to be defined by your past.” In what way are you different now than when you first came to the Mercy Center? “I’m not in survival mode anymore. I used to just survive to get through the week. I don’t have to do that anymore. And I found that happiness within myself.”

“Do not let your adorning be external — the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear — but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.” 1 Peter 3:3-4

BUTTERFLY EFFECT CELEBRATION The Butterfly Effect Celebration 2020 took on a slightly different view. Through the talents of Rob Gibson of Gibson Media, we could invite the community to this touching online experience. The program featured music, poems, and butterflies which the women, children and staff of the Mercy Center released, honoring and remembering those lives the butterflies represented. The afternoon was filled with sunshine, happiness, and true beauty for the Mercy Center for Women family. The butterflies are unique to the Mercy mission as they depict how clients begin their journey at the Mercy Center and transfers into a beautiful story. As one chapter closes, another progresses in flight into a world of opportunity. We are fortunate to witness daily the true beauty of the freedom and promising tomorrows they create.

NEIGHBORHOOD ASSISTANCE PROGRAM American Tinning & Galvanizing Co. Eriez Manufacturing Marquette Savings Bank Northwest

CORPORATE SUPPORT The Mercy Center for Women is grateful for the number of local businesses that support our mission—support that remains in Erie County to improve the quality of life for everyone. There are several ways companies can make a difference in our community and in the lives of our women and children.

Tax Credit Program Businesses in Pennsylvania can earn a substantial tax credit while helping the Mercy Center deliver much-needed services. The Mercy Center for Women is approved for the Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) of the Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development (DCED). This means that businesses can receive a direct reduction of their state tax amount when they choose to participate in this program. More information about the program may be obtained by contacting our executive director.

Event Sponsorship The Mercy Center for Women conducts events throughout the year to gain awareness of our mission and raise funds. Sponsorship opportunities are a great way to help underwrite costs while demonstrating support for our work.

Corporate Matching Gifts Several companies in the Erie area match their employees’ gifts to nonprofits which doubles the impact of donations. The Mercy Center is grateful to donors who contact their human resources departments to determine if their company participates.

Volunteers From yardwork to assisting at community events and everything in between, the Mercy Center appreciates the camaraderie and cheerfulness our volunteers provide.

“Always give without remembering and always receive without forgetting.” Brian Tracy

When Sister JoAnne Courneen, of the Sisters of Mercy, took her vows more than 57 years ago she committed her life to serve those in need. Those vows, which all Catholic sisters take—poverty, chastity and obedience—would include a fourth vow of service which is unique to the Sisters of Mercy.

MISSION IN ACTION SISTERS OF MERCY Sr. JoAnne Courneen, RSM

It is that sense of service that continues to drive her, as she remains fully engaged in helping those less fortunate in the Erie community. Currently the interim president at Mercyhurst Preparatory School, on two boards and actively involved in helping to secure funds for community improvement, Courneen says that the true meaning of “mercy” is going beyond love and charity. “It engages the heart and compels one to action,” she says. Although she believes it’s important to know why she chose this order, her love of education and service is why she stays. “It’s how I work out my relationship with God,” Courneen says. “You find God in the people and circumstances of your life.” Who better to reflect on where the Mercy Center for Women is heading today than someone who, along with other Sisters of Mercy, helped found the Hope House in Erie in the ‘80s, which would later merge with Grass Roots Opportunities for Women to become the Mercy Center for Women. Holy Rosary Project, Adapting to Needs The Mercy Center for Women purchased the former Holy Rosary School in late 2019 and is currently finalizing renovations for permanent housing for homeless women and their children, plus supportive services for others in the community.

When asked how this project aligns with the mission of the sisters and the Mercy Center, Courneen says, “It fits perfectly. Sitting beside a person in need and helping them raise themselves up, it’s a natural step. It’s becoming independent.” The women at the Mercy Center are not only homeless, but many of them have addictions which the program helps treat. Asked why this program is needed, Courneen says, “Everyone deserves the help that they need to be productive. Everyone needs help in one way or another. We all make bad choices in our lives.” The Mercy Center, though rooted in helping those less fortunate, has adapted. Speaking of this change, she says, “Any ministry would be stale if it doesn’t continually try to reinvent itself.” What keeps Courneen’s passion alive? “It’s in those relationships with those you serve and those you work. There is where you find God. We are all called to help,” she says. “Any one of us could be one bad decision away from homelessness. We are our brothers’ and sisters’ keeper. We are first a community.”

“Let us take one day only in hands at a time. Resolve to do good today and better tomorrow.” Catherine McAuley

In her 13 years as Program Director of Dress for Success Erie, Mary Graziano has experienced many changes in how the program is administered to the more than 400 women annually who come through her doors with hopes for a more independent life.

MISSION IN ACTION DRESS FOR SUCCESS

“Over the years, we’ve enhanced our programming to better help women enter or re-enter the workforce and feel confident about themselves,” Graziano says. “I am really excited about our next step.” “I’m not the only one looking forward to our new home,” she says. “I receive calls almost daily from our community partners anxiously awaiting our ability to serve their clients again and our supporters asking when we will reopen.”

Mary Graziano Dress for Success Erie Program Director

The operations have been shuttered since March 2020 due to COVID-19 and there have been construction delays, too, which will initially limit services. “There is now light at the end of the tunnel,” Graziano says. “I’m looking forward to helping women get on with their lives and become the best version of themselves,” she says. The Mercy Center, which operates Dress for Success, plans to open a new boutique in the former Holy Rosary School where renovations are being completed on the 39,000 sq. ft. facility. “Not only will our beautiful new space be larger and offer our women more choices, but programming will be able to occur on-site, too, including those for our career center and women’s empowerment group,” says Graziano. When asked about the new facility and how it fits into the mission of the Mercy Center for Women, she was quick to respond. “Whether it’s Dress for Success specifically or the Mercy Center, our role and vision for the women we serve is the same. We will do anything we can to lift them up, support and empower them to reach their full potential and independence so they may thrive and strengthen their families. I believe each of us has a role to play. I’m truly honored to help them on their journey,” she says.

Tamika, a member of the Women Empowered Networking Group, is currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree in social work.

WHY WE GIVE With seven children in their blended family, Amy and Mike Nedreski clearly have a soft spot for kids. But like some associations with people that progress to a deeper level, their connection to the Mercy Center for Women formed because of their relationships with a Mercy Center board member and the executive director. “We initially got involved with the Mercy Center because it’s a cause that was important to friends of ours,” said Mike Nedreski, president of White Oak Wealth Partners in Erie. He and his wife Amy, vice president and director of business development at White Oak Wealth, have been giving to the Mercy Center for the last five years, first as a couple, then more recently as a business.

“I love how a once vacant building will be used for housing and other services needed in that neighborhood,” she said. Mike Nedreski mentioned the great respect he and his wife have not only for the Mercy Center mission, but also for its Executive Director, Jennie Hagerty. “What’s most impressive is the great appreciation we feel from Jennie whenever we give. It’s truly heartfelt,” he said.

Mike and Amy Nedreski

During the pandemic, the Nedreskis took part in the Mercy Center’s meal train which involved individuals and restaurants choosing a day to deliver meals to residents.

His wife agrees. “Jennie is so good at what she does. She’s genuinely thankful for whatever you do for the Mercy Center,” she said.

“We liked the idea for two reasons,” said Mike Nedreski. “We liked helping local restaurants who were struggling, plus the meals were helping those who couldn’t get to the grocery store,” he said.

Amy Nedreski thinks philanthropic giving is important today and for the future. “Mike and I want our kids to see how we get involved in the community. As they grow older, we want them to realize they have a responsibility to help those who are not as fortunate as they are,” she said.

The Nedreskis opened their hearts even further when they became “Vision 2020” capital campaign donors in support of the Mercy Center’s Holy Rosary School renovation. Amy Nedreski expressed her excitement about the transformation of that property.

Her husband concurs. “As parents we need to continue to expose our children to the ways in which we can make a difference,” he said. “We need to create the next generation of people who will want to open their hearts and wallets to help others.”

“The crowds asked him, ‘What then should we do?’ He answered, ‘Whoever has two shirts must share with the one who has none, and whoever has food must do the same.’” Luke 3:10-11
