Message from the Chapter P resident June 6, 2021 Dear Friends, On the occasion of the 37th anniversary of the Triangle Park (NC) Chapter of the Links Incorporated, I am very excited to extend warm greetings to our friends and the community.

Thirty seven years ago, our Charter members envisioned an organization destined to grow and enrich the lives of many who needed assistance in our community. Guided by the principles of friendship and service, which is the hallmark of the Links, Incorporated, I am pleased to say that the Triangle Park Chapter is vibrant and thriving today as it has been since its inception.

We honor and salute our esteemed charter members for their unrelenting support and dedication to our chapter.

The Triangle Park Chapter acknowledges and appreciates the visionary leadership of our National President, Dr. Kimberly Jeffries Leonard, and the stellar leadership of our Southern Area Director, Mrs. Sylvia Perry. The Chapter’s participation in their services and programs have resulted in special awards and recognition, for which we are truly grateful.

The Links, Incorporated was founded in 1946. It is an international women’s service organization dedicated to civic, educational, and cultural activities, all designed to address identified needs in the community. Our commitment is to improve the lives of women and children both locally and abroad. We do this through five key areas: The Arts, Services to Youth, National Trends and Services, International Trends and Services, and Health and Human Services. Our Chapter is proud of our ambitious and attainable goals. These goals have been achieved through donor participation, partners, supporters, and most importantly, by the beneficiaries of our service.

The Triangle Park Chapter is committed to expanding our services in Durham, Orange, Wake Counties, and beyond. We will continue to develop. cultivate and enhance our relationships with our community partners and sponsors. With your help, we will fulfill our promise to provide transformational and sustainable programming.

Greetings Link Sisters, On behalf of the over 16,000 members of The Links, Incorporated, I am elated to congratulate the members of the Triangle Park (NC) Chapter on your virtual wine tasting fundraising event, “White Rose Sip, Savor & Swirl!”

As we enjoy this afternoon of fellowship and fun, we celebrate the Triangle Park (NC) Chapter for the commitment of its membership and resources to serving and investing in its communities with transformational programs. For nearly four decades, your chapter has provided exemplary community service in addressing the educational, civic and intercultural needs of its African American youth and residents. The Triangle Park (NC) Chapter is recognized for providing outstanding community programming, such as its STE M After-School P rogra m a t P lea sa nt G rove Elementa ry School (which offers reading tutorials for K-5 students exploring STEM careers); Closing the G a p in F oster Ca re Initia tive (which provides year-long support, scholarships and laptops to youth to facilitate their graduation from high school and transition to independent living); HBCU Initia tive a t Sa int Augustine’ s University (which provides scholarships and career counseling and mentoring to college students); Bringing the Arts to Our Schools Initia tive (which conducts virtual sessions with RN Ha rris Arts Ma gnet Elementa ry School students focusing on visual art, ballet and hip-hop dance); and support for the Hillside High School Dra ma P rogra m (through donating funds for software for young playwrights and equipment for film production). These efforts are examples of the Triangle Park (NC) Chapter’s work and investment on behalf of our Services to Youth Facet, which is integral in a comprehensive approach to providing service in our communities.

Since 1984, the Triangle Park (NC) Chapter has proudly served the Durham County, Wake County and Orange County communities with distinction, making connections with its residents and like-minded organizations. It is through the great work of this chapter that we continue to sustain the rich legacy of our co-founders to be Linked in Friendship and Connected in Service.

I applaud President DiJuana McDougal, the Fund Development Committee Chair Lorie-Ann Lee-Carter and Co-Chair Bernadine Cobb, and the Fund Development Committee Members on planning this wonderful event, and your entire chapter membership on your outstanding endeavors. For the past thirty-seven years, the Triangle Park Chapter has been dedicated to community outreach in Durham, Orange, and Wake Counties. 2021 Emcees Tisha Powell-Wayne is an accomplished news anchor for ABC11- WTVD News in Raleigh, NC. She coanchors Eyewitness News at 5:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. She also co-anchors Eyewitness News at 10:00 p.m. on CW22. When Tisha is not on the anchor desk, she is out gathering the latest in medical breakthroughs for the Eyewitness News Health and Fitness Report.

This Louisiana native graduated from Loyola University in New Orleans where she majored in broadcast news and minored in political science. After college, Tisha worked as a reporter, producer and anchor for WCBI in Mississippi. She then went back home to WDSU in New Orleans. As a WDSU reporter, Tisha traveled to Honduras to cover the devastation of Hurricane Mitch and then later returned to cover the rebuilding efforts. She also anchored in San Antonio before coming to ABC11 Eyewitness News in 2004.

While here in the Triangle, Tisha has followed the UNC Tar Heels to the Final Four; and traveled back to New Orleans in 2005 to cover Hurricane Katrina for Eyewitness News. Tisha has also interviewed influential people like First Lady Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey and Dr. Jill Biden.

Tisha is an Army wife of 22 years and enjoys traveling the country to watch her older daughter compete in gymnastics and track and field. She is also a parent volunteer with the Girl Scouts of America and Duke School for Children, and an avid supporter of the American Heart Association and Meals on Wheels.

The Louisiana Association of Educators honored Tisha for outstanding education coverage; and the Press Club of New Orleans recognized her for outstanding deadline news coverage and she was recently awarded by the National Association of Black Journalists. She is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and the Triangle Park Chapter of the Links, Incorporated. _____________________________________________________________________________________________ A native of Donaldsonville, Louisiana, Dr. James Wayne completed undergraduate studies at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He earned his medical degree in 2000 from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans then completed a pediatric internship and residency at San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium in Texas. Dr. Wayne is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and has been a fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics for 20 years.

Dr. Wayne’s active-duty military service included working as a pediatrician for Darnall Army Community Hospital at Ft. Hood, Texas, and for Womack Army Medical Center at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. In 2002, he was part of a military humanitarian assistance mission to Honduras for epidemiologic study. He served in Iraq in 2004-2005 as a task force surgeon in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II. As a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves, Dr. Wayne continues to serve and stands ready to support military treatment facilities if needed.

After leaving active-duty military service, Dr. Wayne spent three years as a staff pediatrician for North Carolina Pediatric Associates in Henderson, North Carolina. For the next five years, he worked as a general pediatrician at UNC Health in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where he also taught medical students and physician assistant students.

Dr. Wayne is a proud husband and father. He and his wife, Tisha, have two daughters: Nina, 19; and Evangeline, 7.

Seven Springs Farms and Vineyards

Located in beautiful Warren County, North Carolina near the town of Ridgeway, we are a small family owned and operated farm and vineyard. Our passion for nature and love of cultivation stems from the generations that came before us and we have been blessed to continue the legacy.

Seven Springs Farms and Vineyards reside on a family owned property with seven naturally created springs that has been in the family since circa 1990. We have been enjoying the gracious soil that our livestock, agriculture and family have been apart of for over 29 years. We started this most recent vineyard venture in November of 2017.

The muscadine grape is a celebratory grape of the south and the history of our area has been historically acclaimed by European settlers who were aware of great growing climates and soils for grapes similar to the likes of France, Italy and other European countries. Before the 1870s, this area is great for not only growing cantaloupes (that are still the best in the world!), but also the soil and temperate climate for successful grape cultivation.

This is truly a family owned and operated venture that with hard work and dedication has become a fruition, monumental and glorious time in our wake of life.

Triangle Park Chapter History The Triangle Park Chapter of The Links, Incorporated was established on June 9, 1984, under the guidance of organizers, Dr. Helen G. Edmonds, Fifth National President of The Links, Incorporated, Lulu Robinson, Rebecca Edmonds and Lucille Webb. The twenty-six charter members hailed from Durham, Orange and Wake Counties, and coalesced to address the community needs of their respective locales. Vivian Edmonds, Editor of The Carolina Times at that time, became the first president of the Triangle Park Chapter. Under her capable leadership, the Chapter began a legacy of providing meaningful service to the local community and abroad.

During the past thirty-seven years, the Triangle Park Chapter has grown to sixty-three members under the inspiring leadership of seventeen dynamic presidents. As a volunteer community service organization, we are committed to civic, educational and cultural activities with the purpose of serving the needs and improving the lives of children and families of the surrounding Triangle area. Each year has brought new challenges for our Chapter as we embrace community service projects that span our 5 facets – The Arts, Services to Youth, National Trends and Services, International Trends and Services, and Health and Human Services. Under the National Trends and Services Facet, we implemented our Habitat Build project in which we volunteered with Wake County and Orange County Habitat for Humanity to help build homes in the East College Park Community in Raleigh, and the Northside Community in Chapel Hill. One of our programs, which encompassed several of the facets, provided an after-school initiative called the Triangle Park Chapter Academy of Arts and Humanities. This program served the children at the Global Scholars Academy in Durham, and provided tutoring, mentoring, musical enrichment, and several forms of artistic expression. Other Chapter projects are focused on the college population.

As part of the National Links HBCU Initiative, the Triangle Park Chapter has adopted St. Augustine’s University, providing workshops, mentoring and over $12,000 in scholarships to its students.

Our Integrated Program, led by the Services to Youth Facet and supported by The Arts, International Trends and Services, and Health and Human Services includes tutoring, mentoring, art, music and dance, as well as, personal health and development. Another program led by the Health and Human Services Facet - “Kids Cook with Heart” - addressed childhood obesity and healthy nutrition. Both of these programs served children at Reaching All Minds STEM Academy in Durham. In addition, the Triangle Park Chapter, in collaboration with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC, addresses food insecurity in students at Burton Elementary School. For more than eleven years, we have distributed backpacks filled with nutritious food for the students to take home each weekend during the school year. The above initiatives were recognized as “Best Practices” programs by the Southern Area of the Links, Incorporated, in 2017. At the 2019 Southern Area Conference, the National Trends and Services Facet won the 2nd place award for its “Get Out the Vote”, Women Running for Public Office, and Links Day at the Capital programs.

The Triangle Park Chapter has remained steadfast in our overarching goal to make a significant and positive difference in the communities we serve; while drawing upon the talent, expertise, womanpower, financial resources, and wisdom of our members, in partnership with people of generosity and goodwill.

This year, in lieu of our signature Annual White Rose Luncheon, we are proud to host the White Rose Sip, Savor, and Swirl, to raise funds in support of our service initiatives, and to thank our supporters.

Working together, we can continue to achieve our humanitarian and philanthropic goals.

The Arts

The Arts Facet focuses on fostering and enhancing the appreciation of the arts within our community and organizational programs. This is made possible through providing instruction in the performing and fine arts, and sponsoring programs for the display of talent by budding, as well as established artists.

The organization endeavors to celebrate the arts in our program plans by providing enriching experiences and artistic opportunities for African American youth and adults. We have the following goals: •

To expose chosen groups to the contributions made by African American artists

•

To encourage the development of talented young artists from local schools and colleges

•

To ensure that all forms of art (visual, performing and literary) are a part of the art experience

Over the last few years, the Arts Facet has continued our efforts in expanding art activity, supporting artrelated educational opportunities for minority youth, as well as presenting and funding performances by youth and accomplished professional artists in an array of disciplines. Even during the covid pandemic crisis our work has continued to address the lack of arts education and exposure in our community.

Below are examples of our work over the last two years: •

Providing tuition assistance for a student’s instruction at the Cary Ballet Conservatory

Creating a Triangle Park Chapter (TPC) quilt as part of the Links Southern Area’s Connecting Threads Initiative

•

Sponsoring “Wellness Wednesdays” at R.N. Harris Elementary School with the following activities:

•

A cloth mask decorating session for 5th graders

•

An introduction to ballet session taught by the Director of Cary Ballet Conservatory

•

A virtual performance by the renowned Rennie Harris Puremovement American Street Dance Theater

•

Hosted a dance workshop with professional dances for students from Burton Elementary School

•

Provided the opportunity to various Durham Public Schools for their students to attend productions at Hillside High School

•

Hosted Celebrity Night Reception for Hillside’s production of The Bodyguard (Actors Bill Cobbs and Starletta DuPois in attendance)

Services to Youth

The Services to Youth facet of the Triangle Park Chapter (TPC) implements programs that seek to eliminate the academic achievement gap for minority youth from elementary school through college.

The programs integrate the following components: early literacy development, character building, health and wellness education; science, technology, engineering, and mathematics studies; leadership development, mentoring on violence prevention and Internet safety, career awareness and preparation, scholarships, and support for the stability and retention of students at historically black colleges and universities. This integrated approach ensures the Triangle Park Chapter is preparing young people to succeed in the global workforce as knowledgeable and healthy citizens.

•

Saint Augustine’s University: SAU-HBCU Services to Youth HBCU Initiative sponsored a panel discussion on Covid 19 and the Job Market: What is the Different Now? on Monday, February 22, 2021. The Panelist included Richard Barnes, Human Resources Director Shaw University, Kathy Everett -Perry Human Resources Director, Durham County and Venessa Harrison, President AT&T Georgia. SAU Student job seekers were invited to attend. During the last week in April the Queens at St Aug held two virtual programs. One addressing Financial Literacy and The Queens Tea. Over $20,000 has been provided in scholarships in the past five years.

Socktober: STY worked with TPC members in October 2020 to collect 683 pairs of socks to supplement families living in shelters and clothing donation centers during Covid 19. STY delivered socks on November 3rd, Giving Tuesday, to Orange County’s Interfaith Council, Durham Urban Ministry, and Wake County’s Helping Hands Ministry.

•

STEM Afterschool: STY partnered with Wake County Parks and Recreation afterschool program at Pleasant Grove Elementary School to provide reading tutorial to K-5 students.

•

Closing the Gap in Foster Care: STY partners with SAYSO NC to promote and empower transitionage youth to flourish personally and professionally. STY worked with TPC members to secure funds to purchase duffle bags for youth transitioning from foster care to store personal belongings. STY also purchased new laptops for students.

•

Dream Big Book Harvest 2021: In addition to our annual donation of $500 to the book harvest, this year STY worked with all facets to collect 300 children’s books for the Book Harvest. TPC members decorated cars with balloons and signs before dropping books off at The Book Harvest’s 10 annual Dream Big Drive -Through Event on Monday, January 18th in Durham’s Central Park.

National Trends and Services

The National Trends and Services facet is committed to empowering communities by addressing the economic and social disparities in finance, housing violence prevention, political influence, and empowerment. The vision of National Trends and Services is to eliminate disparities by reducing barriers to services through advocacy, education, and community service initiatives. The Triangle Park Chapter over the years has made significant strides to meet the needs of the community in Durham, Orange and Wake Counties.

During the 2020-2021 program year, we continued our efforts to encourage voting in the general election. The facet participated in numerous activities to encourage voting and provide education to the community on important ballot initiatives. The facet prepared a GOTV tool kit which was distributed to all chapter members who were encouraged to share with family, friends and other community members.

In addition, a tool kit designed for youth was distributed to students at St. Augustine’s University and foster care youth across the state of North Carolina. We continued our collaboration with other civic organizations to conduct phone banking to register and get out the vote. These organizations included the NAACP, When We All Vote, Democracy North Carolina and You Can Vote NC. We partnered with You Can Vote NC to make phone calls to encourage completion of 2020 Census form. Also worked with other facets to provide Census information to all facet program participants and a special project with Hope Center.

The North Carolina Association of Black Lawyers partnered with Triangle Park Chapter to present a seminar on Estate Planning to the general public.

Financial support was provided to MLK celebrations in the three counties of our service area.

National Trends and Services partnered with Chapel Hill Carrboro Area Alumnae Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Kappa Omicron Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Chapel Hill Carrboro NAACP to present Women’s Voices: We Are Speaking. This program featured 3 panel presentations focusing on advocacy efforts for youth, criminal justice reform and documentation of civic actions. Another in depth program on Shaping Criminal Justice Reform was held. This program included conversations on pending legislation, police standard operating procedures, bail reform and mental health issues.

Participants on this panel included police chiefs, a district attorney, a law professor and former Chief Justice of NC Supreme Court.

International Trends and Services

The goal of the International Trends and Services facet is to provide opportunities for tangible service in other countries. The hands-on approach of working directly with young people and their families provides for a personalized method of assisting and improving the lives of women, children and men worldwide. By implementing long-term programs committed to global awareness and with a concentration on public policy leadership, International Trends and Services stresses advocating for social justice. Highlights include: •

Education Across the Miles Signature Program Title: Books for Africa: Held a book drive and members donated popular fiction and nonfiction hard or soft cover reading books that were 15 years old or newer. We collected 500+ books to ship to children in Africa.

The Southern Area ITS Initiative: One Mission, One Love: TPC made a monetary donation of $350 on behalf of the Safe House.

LIFE (Links International and Foreign Affairs and Business Empowerment for Youth Program) Title: Transforming Your Future: Career Panel Webinar: Saint Augustine’s University international students informed us of their interest in a career webinar. The students chose health, medicine, dentistry, business and technology, criminal justice and policy, and communications and public relations. Students were given the opportunity to attend two 30-minute panel discussions about their two chosen topics.

Personal Care Items for St. Augustine’s University International Students: Saint Augustine’s University international students informed us of the items they needed most during the pandemic.

The facet was able to purchase items for the students.

•

International Trends and Services Facet Scholarship for Academic Enrichment Program: Saint Augustine’s University international students were notified of Chapter scholarship opportunities.

The scholarship committee chose five SAU students to receive $250.00 scholarships in recognition of their outstanding academic success and dedication to the Falcon community.

•

Pillowcase Dresses and Inspirational Bracelets for Jamaica: TPC members used pillowcases, ribbons and other embellishments to create quality clothing for girls that bring dignity through a basic life necessity.

Health and Human Services

The Health and Human Services facet has a mission to promote and facilitate programs that support the maintenance of good health and well-being. Particular emphasis is placed on bringing awareness to and eliminating chronic health disparities in communities of color. This is accomplished through education, health advocacy and optimal utilization of health resources.

The facet has embraced the National Links initiatives which are organ donation awareness, childhood obesity, wellness, breast cancer, heart health, fitness, and mental health.

Triangle Park Chapter has operationalized these national initiatives through several programs and projects: • Participated in the Links 75 Million Steps initiative and the 25th Annual Links Walkathon • During the pandemic, our facet focused on donating masks, closing the digital divide, and food insecurity. Our chapter was featured on ABC News 11 Together’s story “Community partnership helps Burton Elementary through the pandemic.” The story highlighted our gifts of hats, gloves, and masks; our weekly delivery of nutritional power; the donation of TV trays used as personal workstations.

• Our facet donated masks to the Lincoln Community Health Center Pediatric Clinic and facilitated a Mask Webinar with the Arts Facet at RN Harris Elementary School.

• We donated 300 meals to the ABC TV News 11 Together/Food Lion Virtual Food Drive and contributed money and food to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina for Link to End hunger on MLK National Day of Service.

• Each month, we coordinated health activities and presentations for the chapter meetings including Breast Cancer Awareness, Linkages to Life- COVID 19 and Health disparities presentation, Linkages to Life- Donor Sabbath, and Heartlinks/Heart Health Month.

• Partnered with Colgate Bright Smiles Bright Futures Dental Vans to provide dental screening and oral health education. During the pandemic, students participated in the Virtual Dental Van experience. All students were given learning materials, toothbrushes, and toothpaste.

• Served as a joint sponsor of the virtual Women’s Health Awareness Series, “ Enhancing Family Mental Health in the Era of COVID” with North Carolina Central University Department of Public Health, Durham Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated and National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
