WELCOME
Welcome to the 34th annual Tephra ICA Arts Festival. We are so glad you’re here!
Tephra Institute of Contemporary Art (Tephra ICA) is committed to promoting innovative contemporary art by connecting our audiences with artists through year-round exhibitions and programs. Each year, we extend that mission beyond the gallery walls and into the community, welcoming over 200 artists and artisans from across the country to Reston Town Center to share their work at the Tephra ICA Arts Festival.
Over the next two days we invite you to explore, connect, and enjoy. Visit the over 200 artist booths and consider adding a new work to your collection. Beyond the booths, you can join one of our four themed tours, watch an artist demonstration, make some art at the Festival Art Park, grab a beverage from restaurants on our footprint during “Sip and Stroll,” hear live music, and watch a special performance by artist Claire Helen Ashley. There’s something for everyone!
This year Tephra ICA is also celebrating 20 years in its home at Reston Town Center. As you enjoy the Festival, please help us mark this milestone by contributing to our Tephra ICA 20 for 20 Campaign. Just text Tephra20 to 202-999-3805 to give $20. Your gift will help us continue producing the Festival—our largest annual fundraiser—and keep our exhibitions and programs FREE and accessible for all.
We couldn’t do this without our community. Special thanks to Capital One Hall, our Title Sponsor, for their generous partnership. We also thank our ongoing supporters: Signature Community Sponsors at Reston Community Center and Reston Town Center Association, the Virginia Tourism Corporation, and ArtsFairfax, among many others. Please visit our sponsor page for a full list of valued partners.
Have a wonderful weekend and thank you again for joining us at the 34 th Tephra ICA Arts Festival.
Jonell Logan Executive Director and Curator

About the Curator

NICOLA CHARLES , an international curator and the founder of 11:Eleven gallery, was born in London, England. With a diverse background in Relationship Management at Christie’s Auctioneers and Professional Services, Nicola obtained her Curatorial certification from Sotheby’s Institute of Art and has established herself as a highly respected figure across the UK and US art contemporary and urban art markets. Notable achievements include directing, managing, and curating the highly successful exhibition A Journey Through Brutalism at one of South London’s prominent urban art galleries.
Nicola also played a major role in organizing and executing London’s largest urban art festival in 2018. She has gained valuable experience working at Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery and collaborating with partners and sponsors at the renowned Affordable Art Fair. As a passionate globetrotter, Nicola’s extensive travels have nurtured her profound appreciation for the arts and provided her with a global perspective. This passion led her to Washington, D.C., where she currently resides, and founded the notable 11:Eleven Gallery, which opened its doors in 2019. Nicola is a member of Artfinder’s Curational Board and has recently joined the Board of Directors at Project Create, a non-profit organization located in Washington, D.C.

Originally a special feature at The Capital Grille, our namesake burger developed such a cult following, we had to build it its own restaurant. Crafted with a signature Pat LaFrieda beef blend, we dedicate every waking hour to building the juiciest, most masterfully grilled burger this world has ever seen. Pair with sea salt fries and a handcrafted cocktail or boozy shake that’s hand-spun with rich vanilla ice cream and premium spirits.
FESTIVAL ART PARK
Saturday, May 17 & Sunday, May 18
12–4 PM
Reston Town Square Park

This year in the Festival Art Park, dive into the world of printmaking by designing your very own festival flag! Inspired by the artform of collagraphy, visitors will create stamps, to create unique patterns on paper flags. Layer colors and textures to make your flag one-of-a-kind, then use markers, textiles, or colored pencils to add extra flair.
Once your flag is complete, take it with you as you explore the festival. See how many artworks from our 200+ festival artists you can discover that connect to your creation—or trade flags with a friend to see the festival through someone else’s eyes!

RADIANT SPAWN BY CLAIRE HELEN ASHLEY
Saturday, May 17 & Sunday, May 18
12 PM & 3 PM
Reston Town Square Park
Claire Helen Ashley’s Radiant Spawn performance, with audio composition by Joshua Patterson, invites viewers to witness a clutch of brightly colored inflatable creatures discovering their new environment. These luminous creatures are in different stages of evolution, having morphed out of this anthropocenic moment, spawned by their parent Radiant Pearl... Under the watchful eye of their humanoid companions they are seeking, searching, sensing, touching, rolling, quivering, vibrating, adapting, and transforming as they evolve and grow.
Radiant Spawn is sponsored by Reston Community Center. Additional support for the temporary public installation of Radiant Pearl is provided by Reston Town Center Association.
