esde un inicio hemos considerado esta Buchaca (o Buchacas) como acumulaciones importantes que pueden ser usadas y compartidas para generar dinámicas distintas y críticas, a nivel de gestión y en la construcción de relaciones. Sin embargo, en el transcurso surgió la pregunta pertinente ¿Por qué la gente colecciona, guarda, engaleta o buchaquea?

El ejercicio de escribir sobre lo vivido es didáctico y hasta terapéutico no sólo para quien escribe, sino para quien se encuentra en el texto que lee, por esto y otras razones, es que Buchaca existe, porque insistimos en la importancia de reconocer ese preciso instante en el que tenemos que compartir algo antes de que se pierda.

Pensando en la pregunta que abre esta nota editorial, los textos que se incluyen en esta edición responden precisamente a ese espíritu, considerando que existen más preguntas que respuestas, y que van a haber múltiples respuestas a las preguntas. Las “buchacas” que cada cual

ha guardado y decidido compartir acá son una oportunidad para abrir el debate más que dar soluciones únicas y finales.

Cuando le pedimos a alguien que escriba para Buchaca lo hacemos porque consideramos que lo que esa persona vivió en su paso por TEOR/éTica puede tener un valor para otros. Entonces poco importa si pensamos que lo que tenemos es muy poquito, porque a veces sólo necesitamos un poquito para seguir. Queremos reconocer el valor de lo que para muchos puede ser trivial o anecdótico porque hemos encontrado en las experiencias más sencillas una oportunidad para ampliar nuestras miradas y conocernos, esperando que al final resulte en un mejor abordaje de nuestras prácticas profesionales y personales.

HAGAMOS UN CORTIS Cortis en Costa Rica es terminología de juegos infantiles, es el derecho de cada participante a parar en seco la actividad si acontece cualquier perturbación o irregularidad que debe resolverse fuera del juego, esto abarca desde la revisión de las reglas hasta la suscepción parcial o definitiva del juego. nte todo una aclaración, las instituciones, no importa su naturaleza, son las personas que la componen. Lo que en apariencia es economía en el lenguaje esconde la impersonalidad con que nos relacionamos con estas. Así por ejemplo, decimos TEOR/éTica por facilidad, sin darnos cuenta que este nombre de fantasía crea una identidad abstracta hacia la cual dirigimos nuestros afectos. Unos se alegran de TEOR/éTica, otros se enojan. TEOR/éTica tiene amigos y enemigos. Así, lo que empezó por facilidad se convierte en una barrera para entablar diálogo, porque las entidades abstractas son así, no les importa quiénes somos ni cómo nos sentimos.

TEOR/éTica es Daniela, Dominique, Eli, Esme, Karla, Kevin, Lola, Paula, Miguel, Vivi, Don Félix, así como TEOR/éTica es lo que ellos quieran.

Este texto es sobre eso, sobre cómo las personas quieren tomar distancia de las relaciones con lo abstracto. Una lucha que se entiende fácil cuando se reconoce que TEOR/éTica carga con una historia que le confiere una indudable autoridad simbólica sobre las prácticas artísticas

"las instituciones, no importa su naturaleza, son las personas que la componen. Lo que en apariencia es economía en el lenguaje esconde la impersonalidad con que nos relacionamos con estas" contemporáneas de la región. Su fundación y primera administración sólo puede calificarse como visionaria, de la mano de personas como Virginia, Rolando, Tamara, entre otros que iniciaron lo que antes no se había logrado con éxito: poco menos que articular un puente entre los diversos agentes culturales de Centroamérica y el Caribe, cuyo éxito resuena desde entonces en las paredes de esas dos casas en Barrio Amón.

Podemos decir entonces que TEOR/éTica era una identidad incompleta, el mero reflejo de las personas que contribuyeron con el proyecto. Este proyecto, ahora institución y autoridad, adquiere una identidad que sobrevive al cambio de sus colaboradores, al tiempo y hasta a sí misma. A mi parecer, desde entonces la administración de este proyecto se ha caracterizado por la pugna de las personas con esta entidad abstracta, el elefante en la habitación, el espectro que cierra puertas y asusta por las noches.

Por lo menos hasta los actuales responsables, que no sé muy bien por qué, pero lo cierto es que decidieron hacer un alto y pensar que la TEOR/éTica abstracta se estaba

convirtiendo en una limitación concreta para el desarrollo de sus proyectos, que tal vez era momento de revisar. Era hora de hacer un cortis. Era momento de hacer Banga.

Banga es muchas cosas.

Banga es mar en Lituano.

Banga es tiempo y espacio en Ugandés.

Banga es un llamado de ayuda.

Banga es un llamado al encuentro.

Banga es la posibilidad de detenerse, de reconocer que se necesita ayuda, es la posibilidad y el privilegio que tiene la red de organizaciones que componen Arts Collaboratory, de la cual TEOR/éTica es parte, para suspender actividades y replantear sus proyectos.

Así fue como en enero de 2017, cinco personas respondimos al llamado y durante una semana nos dedicamos a conversar de lo que fue TEOR/éTica, de qué es ahora y de cómo sus colaboradores quieren transformarla.

Nos veíamos temprano, con café y frutas, conversábamos, después nos llevaban el almuerzo, luego seguíamos conversando, más café, hacia el final de la tarde parábamos y nos separábamos apenas unas horas antes de vernos para cenar, de ahí hasta la madrugada, y al día siguiente lo mismo. Después de poco más de un año, se me olvidan muchas de las conversaciones, es que fueron muchas ideas, muchas notas, diagramas, listas de cosas por hacer, papeles llenos de proyectos y utopías. Lo que no se me olvida es lo que pasó entre nosotros, y es de eso de lo que quiero hablar.

Mi primera impresión, sólo con leer en el correo los nombres de quienes atendieron al llamado, despertó una alarma, todos venían desde lejos, y eso entonces me sonó mal, una especie de localismo me hacia exigir que si una institución quería ser crítica consigo misma más valía invitar a quienes más la conocían. Y tiene sentido cuando se piensa que pedir ayuda es algo complicado y excepcional, sobre todo si pensamos que es TEOR/éTica quien se reconoce como vulnerable, contrariando su propia, pero equívoca imagen.

Pedir ayuda, no importa si se trata de una institución o una persona, es delicado, y es por eso que es a los amigos a quienes se llama, a quienes nos conocen y sobre todo a quienes nos darán consejo honesto. Por eso pienso que nos llamaron, no por nuestro perfil curricular. Abrumarse era sencillo, y espero que esa confianza haya sido premiada con nuestro trabajo. Si la pregunta es por qué escoger a esos amigos y no a otros locales, seguro es porque entre los segundos es común esa carencia afectiva, producto de la costumbre de relacionarse con identidades abstractas más que con las personas. Y es que opiniones sobran sobre TEOR/éTica, pero las relaciones con las personan que la integran puede que sean escazas; de nuevo, es apelar a las relaciones entre personas mediadas por la institución, no a las relaciones con esta, cosa por lo demás imposible.

Durante esos días, intentamos proyectar los intereses de las personas que componen TEOR/éTica en la forma de proyectos concretos y realizables, desde los más triviales hasta los más fantásticos. No sólo los escribimos, los imaginamos sucediendo y fracasando, los imaginamos tanto que fueron tan reales como nosotros, en esos días vivimos muchas vidas.

"Banga es la posibilidad de detenerse, de reconocer que se necesita ayuda" No sé que pasó entre nosotros, pero imaginar juntos fue sencillo, seguro porque nuestras voces se olvidaron de su propio ego y se dirigieron exclusivamente a contribuir con algo que desde el primer momento nos superaba, era la suma de todos nosotros, una especie de micro comunidad aglutinada de la forma más espontánea, como sólo lo puede el deseo colectivo de creer que el arte sirve precisamente para eso, para desdibujar las diferencias que nos impiden ver que estamos haciendo algo juntos, cualquier cosa, y que eso ya es suficiente.

Durante esos días de verano fue sencillo olvidarse de la polaridad generalizada que existe entre las instituciones culturales y los artistas, esa parodia donde cada parte tira por su lado hasta que la cuerda se rompe, así una y otra vez, ya que por algún misterio perverso las cuerdas parecen no acabarse. Y mientras otros jugaban a la cuerda, nosotros estuvimos aprendiendo a tejer, literalmente, una especie de cortis donde los contrincantes de siempre nos olvidamos que lo éramos. Eso ya los sabíamos, pero la posibilidad de convivir en esos términos fue una verdadera sorpresa.

Sabíamos también que ese estado de excepción en el que vivimos, de convivencia volcada a los intereses colectivos,

no sólo era un privilegio, sino la meta. Por eso con el pasar de los días el grupo, ya de por sí permeable, se hizo más grande. Banga no puede suceder entre cuatro paredes, por eso organizamos una caminata con nuevos amigos, un evento sorpresa donde visitamos a otros, y a todos los invitamos a una fiesta, porque queríamos conocerlos, porque queríamos contarles que también ellos estaban siendo parte de algo.

Creo que el verdadero propósito de hacer Banga es intentar hacer Banga todos los días, luchar por perpetuar ese estado de excepción donde todos tenemos el derecho de pedir cortis y que se nos escuche, de sentarnos en un círculo para decidir lo que más nos conviene a todos. Y con esa tarea se quedaron ellos y nosotros, porque nos seduce la idea, porque nos parece posible, y así lo queremos. Se quedaron con todas las notas, las ideas, los proyectos, las risas, las fotos, los recuerdos, y con la tarea más difícil de todas: permitir reimaginarse, y con ello lo que desde afuera llamamos simplemente TEOR/éTica.

Banga es Alter Academia.

Banga es UPE. Banga es publicar.

Banga es codirección.

Banga es cada vez que almorzamos juntos.

Banga es tener esas dos casas llenas de amigos, de cerca y de lejos.

Banga es todos los días.

¿CÓMO LLEGAMOS ADONDE LLEGAMOS? Repensar la centralidad de las exposiciones omo una institución que trabaja desde la contemporaneidad, el cambio en TEOR/éTica es una de las pocas constantes que mantienen y alimentan la práctica. El cambio viene a menudo acompañado de incertidumbre, preguntas, dudas, e incluso escepticismo.

Sin embargo, también es una oportunidad para replantear dinámicas y cuestionar desde dónde se quiere continuar el trabajo, considerando qué se está construyendo, para qué y con quien. He ahí la clave de una gestión crítica que permite entender mejor y proponer dinámicas que construyan comunidad y ejerzan un agenciamiento político a largo plazo. Repasando los momentos de incertidumbre, de intercambio y de construcción en colectivo que se

dieron durante un proceso de re-pensar las formas de trabajar de TEOR/éTica, Miguel, Daniela y Lola, conversan aquí sobre un ciclo que comienza y los primeros frutos que han ido surgiendo. En la búsqueda de contar y compartir de dónde vienen estos movimientos y qué se quiere poner en práctica, la conversación explora cómo se puede durante ese proceso aceptar la prueba y el error como parte del aprendizaje, la deriva y la experimentación para construir maneras alternativas de relacionarnos desde el arte.

“SER SWINGER O NO SER SWINGER”: pensar en Arts Collaboratory y sus Asambleas como aventuras románticas

ste texto comenzó como una sesión informal grabada entre las respectivas cuentas de Skype pertenecientes a Syafiatudina del Centro de Estudios Culturales KUNCI (Yogyakarta) y farid rakun de ruangrupa (Yakarta), que tuvieron lugar el 7 de mayo de 2018. Luego, la sesión se transcribió, se editó, se abrevió, se re-ordenó y se tradujo para cumplir con la solicitud inicial de los editores. La conversación se realizó originalmente en Bahasa Indonesia; fue transcrita por Khairunnisa y editada por Syafiatudina, para luego ser traducida al inglés por Farid Rakun.

Arts Collaboratory (en lo sucesivo, abreviado y denominado AC) es un ecosistema de veinticinco organizaciones de ideas afines situadas predominantemente en Asia, el Medio Oriente, África y América Latina, todas enfocadas en la gobernanza colectiva.

Las organizaciones participan en diversas prácticas artísticas y curatoriales en pro del cambio social, así como prácticas de sostenibilidad en sus respectivos contextos, con el objetivo de ser eficaces en el campo del arte y más allá. La red funciona como un ecosistema activo, donde el conocimiento y las fortalezas se conjugan para recogerse en procesos de organización colectiva.

Se trata de un experimento radical en la exploración de la potencialidad del arte y la transformación social cuando se permite el encuentro entre experiencias, sueños y reflexiones críticas de profesionales de la cultura de todo el mundo.

Desde 2014, AC celebra una Asamblea anual, como uno de los tipos de reuniones exclusivas para miembros, la cual se lleva a cabo para producir y desarrollar proyectos de colaboración entre las organizaciones participantes.1

DEL POLIAMOR FARID RAKUN (F): Tengo una excelente analogía para

explicar Arts Collaboratory. La analogía se planteó en una conversación que mantuvimos aquí en torno a Gudang Sarinah Ekosistem, no necesariamente para Arts Collaboratory. Al menos MG, Arman y Asung2 estaban allí. Al oírlos, pensé que la analogía también funcionaría para AC:

"Es incómodo, lo sé, exactamente porque debería ser incómodo" Imaginé a cada una de las organizaciones miembros de AC como un hogar que funciona por separado. Cada uno de nosotros, como cualquier hogar ordinario, tiene hijos en forma de programas. En la estructura de AC, estos hogares luego se reunieron para conformar otro hogar más amplio: una orgía o un arreglo estilo swinger, si se quiere.

Esta unidad sombrilla se crea para producir otros hijos.

Es incómodo, lo sé, exactamente porque debería ser incómodo. Es una unión antinatural. ¿Qué tipo de hijos podría engendrar Hansel de Zoolander?3 (y su tribu de swingers)?

Esta pregunta es parecida a nuestra pregunta colectiva en AC. SYAFIATUDINA (S): Nunca he visto Zoolander.

F: ¿Pero entiendes la analogía?

En la secuela, Hansel vivía en un desierto desconocido con su tribu poliamorosa. Al comienzo de la película, Hansel enfrentó una crisis cuando la tribu quedó embarazada (no recuerdo si estaba claro quién realmente iba a tener el bebé). Se volvió loco pensando en cómo criar a ese bebé

en el futuro. Esa falta de acuerdo es lo que Hansel temía; es exactamente nuestra condición en AC. Las cosas se complicaron más en AC, ya que hay hijos anteriores: cada uno de los programas existentes de nuestras organizaciones. La pregunta también fue qué hacer con el nuevo hijo, en relación con los anteriores.

Este nuevo hijo no tendría clara su identidad cultural, su geografía ni su historia. Esta entidad sería terriblemente refrescante. Las finanzas y la legalidad, que antes se daban por sentado, se convirtieron en un tema candente para debatir internamente en este hogar swinger.

Esta es una pregunta aún más divertida, dado que ambos somos indonesios:4 ¿Con qué religión nacería, al saber que cada uno de sus progenitores tiene fe en tantas cosas distintas a la vez? Tal vez sería mejor que todos sus progenitores, todos nosotros, abandonáramos todas nuestras creencias al mismo tiempo, ¿verdad?

consideraríamos que eso es un fracaso: criar a un ladrón.

Pero otros padres quizás no piensen lo mismo, pues podrían considerar que es un exitoso rasgo antisistema. Aquí, estoy renunciando a ser subjetivo. Cuando el fracaso se puso sobre la mesa, obligando a todos a mirarlo directamente a los ojos, el acto mismo abrió diferentes subjetividades para buscar los motivos del fracaso.

de descartar solo las creencias. De nuevo, porque somos indonesios, imaginemos que este hijo (y solo este hijo) será criado en el judaísmo.5 No es diferente de cómo terminamos usando el bahasa indonesio como nuestra lengua nacional.6

¿Por qué AC sería un fracaso como red? ¿Sería por nuestro manejo del hogar? Si AC fuera un gran hogar de hogares, con nuestros productos como nuestros hijos colectivos, creo que esta analogía también funciona para mí. Aun así, honestamente no puedo evitar sentirme disgustado al imaginarnos como un grupo de swingers. Mi pregunta sería: ¿a qué nos referimos cuando hablamos de AC, entonces? ¿Al hogar o sus hijos (en forma de proyectos colaborativos, herramientas prácticas para dirigir un colectivo o nuestra política)?

S: Con esta nueva fe, nadie tendría más experiencia que

F: Nuestros hijos son los consumibles, de esa manera.

S: ¿Dejando caer colectivamente a nuestros hijos mayores,

nuestros programas existentes?

F: Vaya, eso es aún más extremo. Pero yo estaba hablando

los demás. Todos estaríamos abriendo una nueva página.

Para llevar la analogía aún más lejos, si este hijo fracasara en la vida... Se...

F: ... moriría.

S: Ese sería un fracaso demasiado terminante. Después

de eso no nos quedarían más que recuerdos: escribir poemas o erigir monumentos.

Entonces, no. No la muerte. Algo más ligero... Como que este niño se convirtiera en ladrón. Algunos de nosotros

Cómo consumirlos, esa sería la siguiente pregunta.

S: Antes de entrar en eso, creo que en realidad lo primero

es identificar cuál es nuestro producto. Sin él no podemos saber si es un fracaso o no, ¿verdad?

Hace que nuestra conversación sobre el fracaso no vaya a ninguna parte. No podemos ir directamente a qué y dónde se encuentra la falla. El fracaso siempre ocurre en un contexto. Tomemos nuestra Asamblea como contexto.

Al usar esta analogía: cuando estos 25 hogares diferentes actuaron su amor, ¿cuál de estas acciones basadas en el amor resultó ser un fracaso?

Esto abre otro tema: el de ser anfitrión. Cada hogar desarrolla y mantiene su propia hospitalidad particular para atender a los huéspedes de su camada. Si los invitados son otros hogares, ¿podríamos darle vuelta al asunto y percibir que el fracaso no puede ser automáticamente una falta del anfitrión, sino que también puede ser una falta de los invitados? Para que una fiesta funcione, no solo necesitamos un buen anfitrión, sino también buenos huéspedes, ¿no?

DEL ARTE DE SER HUÉSPEDES O “ANFITRIONES DEL ARTE”7 S: ¿Alguna vez hemos hablado sobre ser anfitriones como

una habilidad? ¿Nosotros, como instituciones, necesitaríamos desarrollar capacidades para expandirnos sobre esto?

Volviendo al arte de ser huéspedes, muchas veces damos por sentado que sabíamos cómo ser buenos anfitriones, de modo que esperamos un cierto estilo de anfitrión basado en nuestro estilo y no otros. Pero, en mi experiencia, esto nunca sucede.

"Ahí nos dimos cuenta y entendimos que nuestra luna de miel había terminado. Hemos caído en desgracia, hemos sido castigados" en manos del anfitrión. Creo que la única forma en que podríamos cerrar esta brecha entre la expectativa y la realidad es aprendiendo a ser huéspedes generosos.

Por una vez, no deberíamos juzgar. Deberíamos estar en estado de recibir, en lugar de exigir.

Siguiendo con nuestra nueva lógica y volviendo a la analogía de los swingers, podemos proponer que un anfitrión debe tener privilegios de superioridad. A diferencia de la industria de la hospitalidad, estos anfitriones no son (nuestros) servidores. Alguien nos está abriendo las puertas de su casa. Nos corresponde a nosotros, los que estamos de visita, ser humildes, ¿no es así?

Es posible que la industria hotelera moderna haya cambiado esta noción de ser anfitriones e invitados con el paso de los años. Es su culpa. La mentalidad de “el consumidor siempre tiene la razón” ha sofocado nuestras habilidades para ser buenos invitados. ¿No suena tonto decir que solo hay malos anfitriones, mientras que no hay malos huéspedes?

colectiva. Es rasa8 lo que podría difuminar la distinción entre un anfitrión y sus invitados. Cuando estás en KUNCI, también eres anfitrión, no exclusivamente invitado.

Entiendo que la generosidad, o la hospitalidad en este sentido, es alcanzable cuando se comparten las presiones.

Esto complica aún más esta distinción binaria entre el huésped y el anfitrión: usted es invitado al ser anfitrión, mientras yo soy anfitrión y también soy invitado. El fracaso de uno se convierte automáticamente en un fracaso colectivo. Podemos examinar más detenidamente este término problemático, “fracaso colectivo”. Pero sería para la próxima vez.

Finalmente, debo decir que la Asamblea de Costa Rica no fue un fracaso para mí, sino una caída. No está fallando, sino cayendo. Ahí nos dimos cuenta y entendimos que nuestra luna de miel había terminado. Hemos caído en desgracia, hemos sido castigados. Es como cuando Adán y Eva cayeron del cielo a la tierra.

F: Suena muy religioso.

Y me estoy dando por vencido en mi esfuerzo por imaginar que algún día habrá una visión unida de AC. Para decir las cosas como son, hay muchas organizaciones que continuarán tratando a AC solo como un sistema de financiación. Solo están ahí por los fondos, y nada más.

Deberíamos ser más tajantes, tal vez. Sin ningún apoyo financiero, quién se quedará y quién se irá.

S: Disculpa mi educación primaria católica. Entonces,

cuando caemos de la gracia a la tierra, nos vemos obligados a enfrentar la realidad. Nos hicieron pensar en mecanismos, sistemas y burocracia.

Se trata de un proceso que debemos vivir, creo yo. Por eso me niego a considerarlo en la forma binaria de éxito-fracaso. Este es un proceso de puesta a tierra. Fracasar como caer, caer como fracasar... ya sabes.

S: Para entender esto, creo que la metáfora de la frecuencia

resulta útil. Estar en la misma frecuencia significa que compartimos un posicionamiento similar. Idealmente, deberíamos poder avanzar juntos al mismo tiempo.

De nuevo, alude a una cierta comprensión del fracaso: la sensación de estar atascados, de no ir a ninguna parte. Me interesé en interrogar el significado del progreso mismo.

Quizás no lo necesitemos, pero para algunos de nosotros en AC, se vuelve frustrante cuando no avanzamos, ni retrocedemos. Parece que damos un paso adelante, solo para seguirlo con un paso hacia atrás, ad infinitum.

La horizontalidad entraña el riesgo de volverse totalitaria; cualquier estado comunista podría servir como ejemplo de ello. La horizontalidad no es un estado ideal, ya que nunca es natural, por lo que debe ser forzado, impuesto.

La horizontalidad podría funcionar si se alcanzara en forma orgánica. Podría alcanzarse orgánicamente solo si tenemos tiempo. La velocidad es su enemiga. En nuestra realidad, esto es casi una imposibilidad.

SALIR DE LOS LUGARES COMUNES: ALTER ACADEMIA ahora qué? Podría afirmar que es la pregunta que todas y todos nos hacemos una vez que concluimos la carrera de arte. Son aproximadamente cinco años (para algunos más) que pasamos sentados en el aula, en una burbuja de evaluaciones semestrales, proyectos individuales y grupales, lecturas y tareas que a veces poco o nada tienen que ver con la producción artística contemporánea del país o la región.

Apegados y apegadas a una serie de lineamientos que se cumplen para obtener cada punto y pasar satisfactoriamente el curso. Siguiendo esta lógica, cuando se concluyen los estudios formales, nace la incertidumbre, pues ya no hay guía que cumplir, y una se da cuenta de que dicho título no representa mucho, ni asegura la inserción en el campo artístico.

Con esto no quiero decir que la academia no sea necesaria, pues sigue siendo un lugar importante de saberes, conocimiento y experiencias. Sin embargo, en ocasiones posee un esquema enfocado en la fabricación de “obras de arte”, restando interés a los procesos individuales y a su constante revisión.

Para mi fortuna, ante ese vacío y miedo, pude participar en la segunda edición de Alter Academia en el 2017, un espacio que necesitaba para asimilar lo aprendido durante mi estancia en la universidad y a la vez para desaprenderlo:

maneras de ver, problematizar y hacer arte, de hablar de mi proyecto o de buscar referentes, abandonar la idea de que solo artistas, libros o académicos pueden ser fuentes legítimas y percibir en lo cotidiano otras maneras de obtener información. Desmantelar las tareas estructuradas y los tiempos definidos para comprender que no se trata de la cantidad de piezas que se logran hacer en un semestre, sino de la pertinencia que tienen las mismas.

Dejar de producir exclusivamente desde un énfasis (pintura, grabado, escultura, entre otros) y entender que el medio no debe limitarse a una técnica. Cuestionar el lenguaje y lo “doméstico” (variables de mi trabajo), y apropiarme de ellos para revestirlos, revisar las estrategias de comunicación, los arquetipos que venía empleando y el público al que quiero hablarle, también fueron aspectos que sin duda ocuparon de autocrítica.

Partiendo de lo anterior, la Alter Academia más que un espacio físico o un taller para producir durante tres meses, representaba ese lugar idóneo para cuestionar mi trabajo, para salirme de los espacios comunes e intentar darle nuevas direcciones a un proceso que venía construyendo de forma lineal, con una metodología de trabajo que se estaba convirtiendo inconscientemente en una receta. Repensar, revisar y reflexionar sin duda alguna se convirtieron en los ejes más sustanciales, como bien lo dijo Pablo Hernández, uno de los invitados con quién trabajamos durante esos meses: “Alter Academia, desde su primera versión, y al mismo tono y talante de otros proyectos recientes en el paisaje artístico costarricense, ha querido partir de esa misma posición: dejar de pensar el trabajo propio como uno unidireccional y unidimensional de producción, y colocar a sus convocados y convocadas

en la posición de re-pensar el trabajo propio fuera de esa línea industrial y mercantil de concebir el arte ”.

La residencia se convirtió entonces, en un espacio donde nos permitimos ser vulnerables sin definir un camino o un objetivo claro, donde el error era parte del proceso y no significaba fracaso, por el contrario, generaba otras formas de ver (situación que durante cinco años no me permití o no permitieron). Trabajar desde ahí nos hizo experimentar sin la pretensión de hacer objetos terminados. Sacar

Es por eso que entrar en contacto con otros artistas jóvenes (Andres Gudiño, Sara Mata, Sergio Rojas y el equipo de TEOR/éTica) no sólo amplió el panorama de mi trabajo, sino que me hizo reflexionar sobre la trascendencia de conocer nuevas formas de hacer, aprender y construir.

Además, fue la oportunidad perfecta para ser solidarios y solidarias con el conocimiento que cada residente e invitado costarricense y extranjero cargaba, y de ver en ellos y ellas las mismas preocupaciones e imaginar en conjunto algunas soluciones.

Después de haber concluida la Alter, reafirmo la necesidad en el país de espacios de educación artística no formal que nos saquen del esquema habitual, que centren la mirada en el quehacer y donde se puedan establecer puntos de encuentro y diálogo para así expandir el panorama que tenemos sobre nuestros propios proyectos. Considero que las instituciones académicas de arte deberían expandir sus límites y dejar de centrarse en la elaboración de obras, deberían abandonar los mecanismos de enseñanza basados en propuestas herméticas encasilladas en planes de estudios desactualizados. ¿Qué quiero saber? ¿Cómo imagino que puedo aprenderlo? ¿De dónde nace esa inquietud? ¿Cómo visibilizar lo que quiero aprender? Esas y otras preguntas que nos hicieron en la residencia aún resuenan en mi cabeza y considero que desde ahí tendría que partir la educación artística. Digo esto porque tiene más sentido empezar

Como es obvio, nada se contestó en tres meses. Repensar el trabajo debería ser una tarea constante y esas interrogantes que inventamos y construimos en grupo se han convertido en nuevos horizontes para explorar. Los esquemas, apuntes, preguntas y premisas durante la residencia, me hicieron ver mi trabajo desde otro punto de vista, con nuevas posibilidades y proyecciones más allá de las herramientas adquiridas en la escuela formal.

Es momento de que las universidades brinden este tipo de insumos e interrogantes, pues son herramientas que estimulan el quehacer, la reflexión individual, y que fácilmente pueden trascender las aulas para convertirse en un ejercicio de constante revisión que permite generar ideas frescas y producir desde las inquietudes.

Como mencioné desde el inicio, si de antemano sabemos que vamos a sufrir un nivel de incertidumbre cuando pasamos de ser estudiantes a ser egresadas - y que mi experiencia no corresponde a un hecho aislado sino a la realidad de muchas personas- deberíamos exigir otra formación universitaria. También es importante tomar la iniciativa y entrar en contacto con otros artistas jóvenes, romper la barrera que tenemos con ciertas instituciones y recordar que repensar es un ejercicio que requiere tiempo, esfuerzo y, que aunque no es tangible, es indiscutiblemente necesario en cualquier proceso de creación.

TRABAJANDO EN EL FÉRTIL CAOS DE LA REESTRUCTURACIÓN ubimos al avión con la certeza de que el intercambio sería provechoso, pero sin expectativas concretas, sin anticipaciones ni predicciones.

Llegamos a San José pensando en presente y ya contagiados por el chiste de la confusión clichosa / chiclosa de Costa Rica / Puerto Rico, San Juan / San José, y tooodas sus permutaciones posibles. Justo terminaba nuestro “año”, y sacar el tiempo para calibrar nuestro futuro (más o menos inmediato) fuera de nuestra cotidianidad nos pareció una gran oportunidad. La planificación de nuestra estadía aguardaría un poco y sin pensarlo mucho continuamos operando directamente desde el presente. En TEOR/éTica tuvieron la misma idea, o bien fue una instancia en donde las condiciones fueron alineadas por pura sincronía.

Corrección: sí teníamos algo claro y era que íbamos a llegar a romper el hielo inmediatamente, y una vez roto lo íbamos a bautizar con el Ron del Barrilito que llevamos de regalo.

Al segundo día nos levantamos tarde, como en casa y en familia — y eso que en un momento tuvimos la sospecha de que esta residencia podría ser un poco sosa. Nada que ver.

La idea de residencias institucionales es súper útil, aunque ojo, tenemos que aceptar que para nosotros también fue

"participar en una residencia como ésta nos dio ganas de trabajar con la mayor libertad posible, haciendo mucho, trabajando y tratando de despojarnos, aunque fuera por unas semanas, de lo engorroso que puede ser administrar e idear una organización como Beta-Local o TEOR/éTica" un poco confuso. Somos tres artistas y por el momento Beta-Local es una organización dirigida por artistas. Dicho esto, participar en una residencia como ésta nos dio ganas de trabajar con la mayor libertad posible, haciendo mucho, trabajando y tratando de despojarnos, aunque fuera por unas semanas, de lo engorroso que puede ser administrar e idear una organización como Beta-Local o TEOR/éTica.

Sin darle mucha importancia a desenrollar roles y aprovechando la confusión, vimos en esta residencia una gran oportunidad para intercambiar experiencias, modos de trabajo, y para desahogar frustraciones.

No es casualidad que nuestras existencias coincidieran en el fértil caos de la reestructuración de sendas organizaciones. Con lo del caos tal vez exageramos un poco,

pero las transiciones toman tiempo y trabajo. Desde nuestro lado, nos encontrábamos en transición de junta de directores, y con nuevos perfiles de los participantes de nuestros programas. También nuestro contexto histórico actual es uno distinto a cuando Beta-Local fue fundado.

Las condiciones latentes que propiciaron la fundación de la organización, esas que en aquel momento eran un presagio, hoy son una realidad concreta, ya no hay periodo de prueba. Por un lado, queremos evitar el contragolpe mientras proponemos formas de observar, trabajar y estar

Con lo del caos tal vez exageramos un poco, pero las transiciones toman tiempo y trabajo" una sensación medio sci-fi al tenerlo en las manos. Otro desastre natural, en otras coordenadas, hizo que se perdiera. Las prioridades cambiaron, relegando las intenciones de trabajar alrededor del panfleto a otras ideas y acciones. También están en remojo varias ideas a partir de las esferas de piedra del Diquís, el dicho de la dicha, los osos ociosos y la vegetación volcánica.

En fin, por ahora Marino Protti1 también funciona como ready made: Todavía estamos sistematizando lo que aprendimos y después habrá tiempo para la interpretación. en Puerto Rico, pero ahora mismo la crisis es inevitable.

Esto establece el tono de nuestro contexto.

Hacia el final de nuestra estadía, dejaron por debajo de la puerta del garaje una fotocopia con propaganda religiosa. El contenido del panfleto utilizaba como pie forzado un terremoto en Nicoya para articular un discurso apocalíptico vinculado a una manifestación punitiva de la naturaleza. Fue guardado con intenciones de hacer algo con el a manera de ready made. El panfleto propiciaba

El desarrollo de esta crónica está marcada por unos tiempos muy extraños. Justo cuando regresamos de Costa Rica, entramos en puro modo huracán (en momentos todavía estamos en esa). Primero Irma, como fogueo, luego María como el gran evento, lo que en parte ha alterado el efecto temporal destinado a comprender nuestra experiencia tica. "en ocasiones la amistad es inclusive un término sobrevalorado en la producción cultural. Mas no debe haber ningún sentimiento de culpa cuando ésta surge de manera espontánea, aprovechar esa instancia es un súper poder" aceptar que la percepción del tiempo continúa siendo extraña e intermitente. Dentro de este sistema se está en un presente constante, donde la intuición es clave dentro de un complejo aparato sensorial. Al pensar retrospectivamente en nuestra residencia en TEOR/éTica, de repente la interpretación es sensorial, todavía conjugada desde el presente. Los cambios que trajo esta temporada de huracanes re-configuraron muchos de nuestros planes y tareas como organización. Nos tocó mucho trabajo pesado y el requerimiento de nuestras capacidades de ninja.

En muchos momentos y sin ellas saberlo, TEOR/éTica se volvió como nuestra conciencia, una conciencia pícara, por supuesto. Sin mucha pirotecnia, nuestra relación ha continuado desarrollándose durante este tiempo de manera cotidiana a pesar de que “hablamos” sólo de vez en cuando. Esto podría presentarse como una simple manifestación de amistad. Queremos pensarlo como una propuesta concreta en relación a las coordenadas desde donde organizaciones como las nuestras, pueden conspirar.

Sin duda, nuestro presente constante ha sido uno fastidioso al momento de materializar las cosas, incluyendo la amistad. Aún así, se materializan, puede que por ahora este aparente defecto sea una virtud. No siempre se debe esperar que intercambios y colaboraciones se den con flow, pues en ocasiones la amistad es inclusive un término sobrevalorado en la producción cultural. Mas no debe haber ningún sentimiento de culpa cuando ésta surge de manera espontánea, aprovechar esa instancia es un súper poder. La culpa que se la queden los cristianos de Nicoya.

ESPACIO DE ESCUCHA TEOR/éTica + SEMILLAS n marzo de 2017, en el marco del Festival Amón Cultural, alguien nos dejaba por escrito su consideración sobre el barrio: “Me llaman la atención los travestis. Quisiera tomarles fotos”. Una frase que, desde su aparente laxitud o ingenua negligencia, ofrece fondo y forma como para elaborar un tratado sobre la ciudad, nuestros modos de vivirla desde los prejuicios, privilegios y falsas distancias, pero, ante todo, sobre las maneras en que interpretamos, naturalizamos y nos apropiamos de sus fenómenos.

El texto anónimo fue colgado en el “tendedero de historias”, una de las actividades con las que TEOR/éTica abrió sus puertas en día de festival, entre muchos otros testimonios que recogen memorias de barrio, infancia, símbolos y

percepciones que han quedado resonando en los imaginarios de quienes transitan por Amón y alrededores. El zoológico Simón Bolívar es un tema recurrente, y varias personas todavía contextualizan esta franja josefina como un umbral de acceso a aquel lugar donde se exhibía animales enjaulados.

En una entrevista reciente para el podcast “Radio ¡UPE!”, la artista y activista trans Natalia Porras, quien también es trabajadora sexual en el barrio, nos compartía una

Personas trans, cuyos servicios buscan muchos, otros quieren agredir, y algunos fotografiar.

analogía para esbozar su experiencia habitual en el espacio público: “se lo digo gráficamente: aquí al ladito está el zoológico, que era muy bello para la gente… Para mí era horrible; un montón de animales exóticos en cautiverio, oprimidos y recibiendo migajas, así como estaba el león (…) Íbamos y les tirábamos cositas a los monos, que estaban en un círculo, con unas cuerdas miserables en un hábitat ficticio… Pues las trans estamos expuestas a lo mismo…” Se refiere, por supuesto, a esas personas que desde hace muchos años satisfacen una demanda

“Una vez tuvimos en TEOR/éTica una expo llamada ‘New Fantasies’, y teníamos muchos visitantes curiosos que entraban pensando que esta era la casa de masajes ‘New Fantasy’, ubicada una cuadra al sur. Las caras de confusión, pena y asombro no tenían precio”… Relataba otra anécdota en el ‘tendedero’.

Barrio Amón es un lugar complejo, paradójico y cambiante.

Su ambigüedad radica en que ha sido postulado durante décadas como el ‘cuadrante’ histórico-culturalista por excelencia del casco central de San José, a la vez que su suerte ha sido dejada a la usurpación carrocentrista de sus espacios públicos, con la consecuente introversión de los ámbitos privados en islas que reniegan del exterior

detrás de fachadas coquetas pero ariscas. Este “barrio aristocrático” (así lo siguen llamando algunos), otrora refugio de la burguesía de la capital, ha sido devorado por un tránsito ruidoso e indolente que todo lo convierte en zona de paso y lo vacía de su sentido de vecindad. Sus vocaciones y usos son transitorios, y mutan drásticamente entre el día y la noche, entre jornadas laborales y feriados.

En un taller realizado con artistas para hablar del mismo, se decía que Amón es un anciano que ve pasar el tiempo desde un rincón atemporal, sabiéndose tan dueño de su pasado como dudoso sobre su futuro.

En TEOR/éTica, atendiendo al llamado que desde 2016 nos hicieron la asociación de vecinos, el Instituto Tecnológico y otras entidades locales que organizan Amón Cultural1, nos preguntamos qué, cómo y cuándo podíamos aportar a las iniciativas que buscan resignificar al barrio que ha alojado a la fundación desde hace 19 años; preguntas que, en vez de respuestas, derivaron en un ramaje aún más amplio de interrogantes. Desde entonces asumimos el desafío como una buena excusa para reflexionar sobre nuestro papel de entidad cultural en la zona. Se invitó a colaborar en ello a la Asociación Semillas2, un colectivo interdisciplinario que impulsa la arquitectura social comunitaria para mejorar la calidad de los espacios públicos y hábitats humanos a través de la articulación intersectorial y la co-gestión de procesos participativos. En conjunto establecimos un grupo de estudio, al que llamamos “¡UPE!” (para simbolizar el acto de la fundación que sale a tocar la puerta al vecindario), que ha buscado convertirse en una instancia mediadora para nutrir el pensamiento colectivo, crítico y creativo sobre el barrio y su contexto.

“¡UPE!” Ha venido operando desde una situación de pregunta que no aspira a encontrar respuestas concretas, sino a generar otras preguntas que estimulen diálogos y encuentros con interlocutores muy diversos" “¡UPE!” Ha venido operando desde una situación de pregunta que no aspira a encontrar respuestas concretas, sino a generar otras preguntas que estimulen diálogos y encuentros con interlocutores muy diversos. Nos hemos permitido elaborar una serie de especulaciones, conjeturas e interrogantes con respecto a nuestra epidermis, ahí donde sentimos el contacto que nos hace reconocernos como parte del territorio en donde nos ubicamos, y de sus tejidos. Ha sido un proceso de escucha, de escudriñar las conexiones emergentes, de hacer explícito lo implícito, de cuestionar los bordes que definen lo “deseable” y lo marginal, calibrando detectores desde el reconocimiento de nuestras propias ambigüedades para interactuar con otros actores y actoras, y con sus genuinas inquietudes.

No se trata de un proyecto de carácter técnico o urbanístico, ni de una intervención física. Consiste en un agenciamiento espacial3, en el sentido de que aborda la

producción del espacio como una tarea compartida, que reconoce el valor de una participación que trasciende los espectros de lo académico, formal e institucional, a la vez que incluye los saberes y experiencias a los que con tanta frecuencia se asigna un carácter tácito y tangencial en los estudios “oficiales”. continua en el tiempo, que no está fijada y no responde a plazos. Según Subtramas4, el agenciamiento “se traduce en la capacidad del sujeto para generar espacios críticos no hegemónicos de enunciación del yo, en y desde lo colectivo, para contrarrestar las lógicas de control que se le imponen. De este modo, desafía la hegemonía de lo normativo, homogéneo y fijo para hacer funcionar distintos nodos/agentes que se relacionen entre sí y hacia fuera”5.

En vez de resultados formales sofisticados, se pretende fomentar relaciones empoderadas, desde un lugar de legitimación y no desde los mitos que suelen distorsionar nuestras lecturas de lo socioespacial y urbano.

En el proceso, hemos realizado tertulias, entrevistas, reuniones, grupos focales y talleres con participación de personas representantes de sectores como las artes, historia, arquitectura, patrimonio, gestión cultural, paisaje, género, colectivos urbanos, organización vecinal, fuerza pública, organizaciones religiosas, hoteles y comercios,

"No se trata de un proyecto de carácter técnico o urbanístico, ni de una intervención física. Consiste en un agenciamiento espacial" habitantes de la calle, trabajadoras sexuales, Amón Cultural, el TEC y el mismo personal de TEOR/éTica. Esto con el propósito de ayudar a articular una plataforma colaborativa desde la cual se agencie el espacio simbólico y material, así como procesos que están en marcha y otros potencialmente relevantes en el barrio. Buscamos contribuir a visibilizar, amplificar y poner en diálogo franco y transparente la diversidad de voces y rostros que coexisten y conforman la dimensión sociocultural de Amón.

A raíz de esto, a partir de diciembre de 2017 creamos la plataforma “Radio ¡UPE!”, un podcast mensual de acceso gratuito y abierto para conversar sobre el pasado, presente y futuro de Barrio Amón, abordando temas significativos junto con personas invitadas de todos los sectores que actúan e inciden en la zona, en espacios de conversación que simulan tardes de café en el corazón del vecindario.

Hasta hoy se han publicado cuatro emisiones del podcast, que están accesibles en el sitio web de TEOR/éTica.

Otro apunte a mano en el ‘tendedero de historias’ decía: “Un café al final de la tarde, viendo un rótulo de ‘se vende’,

se convirtió en un sueño: vivir en Barrio Amón… un sueño hoy convertido en vida real :) Un barrio lleno de historia, personas y personajes”. ¿De quién es el espacio público en Amón? Nos cuestionamos. Y ¿en qué se seguirán transformando sus espacios privados? Mientras algunos nichos especulan con la gentrificación y fantasmas afines, y otros sueñan desde la melancolía patrimonial, hay quienes anhelan una coexistencia inclusiva y reclaman su derecho a la ciudad. Desde aquí, seguiremos preguntando(nos).

DETENERSE ES UN LUJO NECESARIO

Cada vez nos convertimos más en una especie de controladores aéreos, tenemos tantos frentes abiertos que nuestra energía se va en lograr que todo siga su curso para evitar el colapso.

El multitasking de proyectos dividió nuestra capacidad de atención en pequeñas ventanas; mientras trato de escribir este texto, me desconcentro, respondo un mensaje, mando el correo que olvidé y googleo la forma correcta en español de referirme al scrolling. El problema del multitasking no es tanto la distracción sino la falta de perspectiva.

Nos ocupamos de tanto al mismo tiempo que perdemos distancia, nos cuesta frenar para analizar y seguir la línea de evolución de lo que hacemos.

Este texto es un poco eso, un intento por parar. Con un plazo de tiempo mínimo, trato de echar atrás para identificar cuales búsquedas personales e insumos externos, lograron sobrevivir a los distractores ambientales para influenciar hoy lo que hago. Como auto imposición y masoquismo, decidí no sentarme a escribir hasta que fuera demasiado tarde, según yo, para descartar ideas en mi cabeza antes de que llegaran al papel, bueno, al monitor. No sé si esta estrategia haya sido buena o mala idea, pero estamos a destiempo para cuestionarla.

Trabajar a partir de pequeños párrafos dejando pasar el tiempo entre uno y otro fue una forma de ordenarme poco a poco. Avanzar me costó más de lo que debería, cuando intentaba escribir algo que le pudiera ser útil a alguien más, todos los resultados eran rebuscados y tiesos. Entonces, me devolví a la búsqueda original, entenderlo como una revisión personal, un ordenar ideas desencajas en mi cabeza. Este ejercicio no pretende entonces servirle a nadie más, en caso que lo haga, me alegro, pero sería solo coincidencia.

Mi interés por poner a prueba nuevas opciones pedagógicas y de mediación, inició en 2016 durante la experiencia del LAB: un espacio donde convivimos arquitectos y artistas escénicos por ocho meses, en una casa primero, y en un edificio en el centro de San José después. Más allá de los contenidos o las estructuras de aprendizaje, el espacio en sí y su forma de uso fueron clave para la construcción de un vínculo entre los que participamos. Compartir el café, cocinar juntos, entrar en medias para no ensuciar, fueron mínimos gestos que detonaron una dinámica de aprendizaje muy distinta a cualquier experiencia previa. Es interesante como un simple cambio en los fenómenos de uso de lo arquitectónico decantó en nuevas experiencias de

socialización. Ejemplos así nos reafirman una vez más, que la arquitectura no se trata de construcción sino de vínculo, un vínculo con el otro en el espacio.

Arrancando el 2017, participé muy desde la periferia del proceso de reestructuración y autocrítica que permitió el Banga en TEOR/éTica . Para mí, el mayor acierto de esa experiencia fue la posibilidad de entender a la fundación como la suma de sus subjetividades, lo cual da nombres y caras específicas a lo que antes se percibía como una fachada hermética y formal. La simple acción de reconocerse desde su condición corporal, permitió un acercamiento para la colaboración de personas que hasta ese momento nos habíamos mantenido al margen.

Como primer punto de cruce y aprovechando el lanzamiento del libro Agítese antes de usar y el taller Hábitos de aprendizaje de Renata Cervetto, co-organizamos un

pequeño evento [abro Facebook, busco la descripción del evento, copio y pego] …una conversación abierta sobre la aparición de espacios inesperados de aprendizaje compartido. Un diálogo en torno a las formas de relacionarnos con lo pedagógico y los modos de compartir la ignorancia…

El resultado de este encuentro, como suele suceder en espacios de este tipo, fue una catarsis grupal sobre las insatisfacciones de los modelos educativos en las escuelas de arte y arquitectura, las dinámicas de poder docente-estudiante y lo poco que se motiva la investigación y descubrimiento espontáneo. El cierre de la discusión y posterior taller con Renata lanzó entonces una serie de preguntas alrededor de las formas en que articulamos espacios de aprendizaje: [voy al escritorio, busco PDF “Cómo vivir solos”, releo por encima, copio y pego] ¿Cómo sostener un colectivo que preserve la dimensión de la singularidad? ¿Cómo crear espacios heterogéneos, con tonalidades propias, atmósferas distintas, en los que cada uno se enganche a su modo? ¿Cómo mantener una disponibilidad que propicie los encuentros, pero que no los imponga, una atención que permita el contacto y preserve la alteridad? ¿Cómo dar lugar al azar, sin programarlo? ¿Cómo sostener una “gentileza” que permita la emergencia de un hablar allí donde crece el desierto afectivo? [FILOSOFÍA DE LA DESERCIÓN Nihilismo, locura y comunidad – Peter Pál Pelbart] Las preguntas del texto, al cual vuelvo constantemente como referencia para mis procesos actuales, no pretenden

en lo absoluto tener una única respuesta, sino más bien repetirse en loop cada vez que iniciamos un proceso de colaboración y aprendizaje. Unos meses después sucedió algo similar con la presentación de Mónica Hôff, una hora y media de intenso bombardeo de información. Fue tanto, que de ese encuentro apenas sobreviven unas pocas notas en mi celular y una idea clara que resume todo y se quedó grabada por su fuerza y simplicidad: la educación solo es efectiva si es afectiva.

¿Cómo articular una experiencia de aprendizaje afectiva? [dejo pasar un par de días] Durante las dos semanas entre que me invitaron a hacer este texto y me senté realmente a escribir, le di vueltas y vueltas a esta pregunta. Redacté y re-redacté en mi cabeza posibles escenarios, todos sin éxito. Ahora, cuando ya el tiempo se agota, no puedo dejar de pensar que lo afectivo parte de lo más elemental: el cuerpo. Es una respuesta que me parece obvia, pero en su obviedad no se le da la importancia que requiere. La afectividad inicia con la cercanía, la confianza y el contacto; puesto de otra forma, inicia con los cuerpos en el espacio, su relación y formas de habitarlo.

La idea de lo corporal está atrapada en una dualidad, por un lado, hay una excesiva exaltación al cuerpo estetizado y erotizado, paralela a un culto a la inteligencia y creatividad. Estos dos universos, el intelectual y el corporal, se entienden como dos polaridades separadas e incluso excluyentes. Me resulta muy interesante cómo la dimensión corporal está infravalorada en el discurso arquitectónico y casi borrada de sus procesos pedagógicos. Parece que

Me acuerdo de los libros que vienen en camino, reviso el correo a ver cuando llegan. “Están atrasados” dice al final.]

[Volviendo] El aprendizaje afectivo entiende al cuerpo no únicamente como materia, sino como cuerpo que siente y piensa, que tiene emociones y deseos particulares que motivan su proceso de aprendizaje. Es un cuerpo que se entrega y confía en el vínculo con el otro y ese vínculo, es la clave para la colaboración. El aprendizaje afectivo, motiva la fuerza de la subjetividad, es una mezcla heterogénea donde cada una de sus partes es reconocible, permitiendo el pensamiento no lineal, el encadenamiento y el conocimiento de uno como motor para el aprendizaje del otro.

"La afectividad inicia con la cercanía, la confianza y el contacto; puesto de otra forma, inicia con los cuerpos en el espacio, su relación y formas de habitarlo" A un paso más allá de lo corporal está el espacio doméstico.

Casa-Cuerpo / Cuerpo-Casa como siguiente capa de intimidad. La experiencia del LAB fue muy reveladora en este sentido, ya que la forma de uso de los dos espacios en los que estuvimos, a pesar de no ser propiamente casas, estuvo cargada de una cuota de domesticidad alta: Cocinar, comer, jugar e incluso dormir en el mismo espacio, fueron métodos de construcción de convivencia y cohabitación. Pensar en modelos de aprendizaje que funcionen como espacios habitacionales es una aproximación interesante para fomentar la construcción de vínculo afectivo y confianza. Abrir el espacio de la casa es un gesto poderoso, desinteresado y horizontal, una pequeña acción que le permite al otro formar parte de las dinámicas y rituales propios.

Para cerrar y ser fiel a mi decisión de entender este ejercicio como una revisión personal sin mayores aspiraciones, termino lanzando una serie de preguntas para mis futuros procesos de trabajo.

¿Cómo aprender solos y juntos al mismo tiempo? ¿Cómo iniciar todo proceso de aprendizaje desde de nuestra dimensión corporal y sensitiva? ¿Cómo las formas del uso de lo espacial son una herramienta para el aprendizaje afectivo? ¿Cómo generar espacios de colaboración que se sientan como en la sala de la casa? ¿Cómo abrir el espacio doméstico para el encuentro desinteresado y horizontal? ¿Cómo arrancar procesos desde la convivencia y cohabitación que resulten en experiencias pedagógicas? ¿Cómo fomentar el ocio, la conversación informal y la deriva como herramienta para el descubrimiento? ¿Cómo maximizar la soledad para pasearnos en nosotros mismos?

ince the beginning we have considered this Buchaca (or Buchacas) as important accumulations that can be used and shared to generate different and critical dynamics, on a cultural management level and in the construction of relationships. However, a relevant question arose in this process: Why do people collect, save, stash or have “buchacas”?

The exercise of writing about personal experiences is didactic and even therapeutic, not only for those who write, but for whoever finds themselves in a text they read. For this and other reasons, Buchaca exists, because we insist on the importance of recognizing that precise moment in which we have to share something before it is lost.

Thinking about the question that opens this editorial note, the texts included in this edition respond precisely to that spirit, taking into account that there are more questions than answers, and that there are going to be multiple answers to these questions. The “buchacas”

that everyone has saved and decided to share here are an opportunity to open a debate, rather than give unique and final solutions.

When we ask someone to write for Buchaca we do it because we consider that what that person lived on their passage through TEOR/éTica can be valuable to others. Therefore it does not matter if we think that what we have is very little, because sometimes we just need a little bit to continue. We want to recognize the value of what for many may be trivial or anecdotal, because in the simplest experiences we find an opportunity to broaden our views and get to know each other, hoping that in the end it will result in a better approach to our professional and personal practices.

LET’S TAKE A TIMEOUT In Costa Rica, a timeout is called “cortis.” It is a term used in children’s games. It gives each participant the right to stop the activity on the spot if there are any disturbances or irregularities that must be resolved outside the game. This includes anything from revising the rules to the partial or definitive suspension of the game. irst of all, I would like to clarify that institutions, no matter their nature, are the people that comprise them. What might seem like economy of language hides the impersonality with which we relate to these. For example, we say TEOR/éTica for ease of reference, without realizing that this fantasy name creates an abstract identity towards which we direct our affections. Some are happy with TEOR/éTica, others are angry. TEOR/éTica has friends and enemies. Thus, what started out for ease becomes a barrier to enter into dialogue, because abstract entities are like that, they do not care who we are or how we feel.

TEOR/éTica is Daniela, Dominique, Eli, Esme, Karla, Kevin, Lola, Paula, Miguel, Vivi, Don Félix, and TEOR/éTica is anything they want it to be.

This text is about that, about how people want to distance themselves from relationships with the abstract. A struggle that is easily understood when you recognize that TEOR/éTica carries a story that endows it with an undoubted symbolic authority on contemporary artistic

"institutions, no matter their nature, are the people that comprise them. What might seem like economy of language hides the impersonality with which we relate to these" practices in the region. Its foundation and first administration can only be described as visionary, by the hand of people like Virginia, Rolando, Tamara, among others who started what had not been achieved before successfully: creating a bridge between the different cultural agents of Central America and the Caribbean, whose success still resonates on the walls of those two houses in Barrio Amón.

Thus, we can say that TEOR/éTica was an incomplete identity, the mere reflection of the people who contributed to the project. This project, now an institution and an authority, acquires an identity that survives through changes in collaborators, time and even within itself. In my opinion, since then the administration of this project has been characterized by the struggle of people with this abstract entity, the elephant in the room, the ghost that slams doors and scares us at night. At least up until the current managers. I do not quite know why, but the truth is they decided to take a break: the abstract TEOR/éTica was becoming a concrete limitation for the development of their projects, and perhaps it was time to revise. It was time to take a timeout. It was time to do Banga.

Banga is many things.

Banga means sea in Lithuanian.

Banga means space and time in Ugandan.

Banga is a cry for help.

Banga is a call for an encounter.

Banga is the possibility of stopping, of recognizing that help is needed. It is the possibility and the privilege of the network of organizations that make up Arts Collaboratory, to which TEOR/éTica belongs: to suspend activities and rethink its projects.

That is how, in January 2017, five of us answered the call.

For a week, we engaged in conversations about what TEOR/éTica was, what it is now and how its collaborators wish to transform it.

We met early, with coffee and fruit; we talked, then they brought us lunch, and we continued talking; more coffee...

Towards the end of the afternoon, we stopped and separated just a few hours before meeting again for dinner; from there until dawn, and the same thing the next day. After a little over a year, I forgot many of the conversations.

There were many ideas, many notes, outlines, to-do lists, papers full of projects and utopias. What I do not forget is what happened between us, and that is what I want to talk about.

My first impression, just reading the names of those who answered the call on the email list, set off an alarm: They all came from afar, and that didn’t sound right to me, a kind of localism made me demand that if an institution

wanted to be critical of itself, it was better to invite those who knew it most. And it makes sense when you think that asking for help is something complicated and exceptional, especially if we think that TEO/éTica itself is recognizing it is vulnerable, contradicting its own, mistaken image.

Asking for help, whether you are an institution or a person, is delicate. That is why you call your friends, those who know you and, above all, those who will give us honest advice. That’s why I think they called us, not because of our career profile. Feeling overwhelmed was simple, and I hope that confidence has been rewarded with our work.

If the question is why choose those friends and not other locals, it might be because of the common lack of affect of the latter, resulting from the habit of relating to abstract identities rather than people. Their opinions abound on TEOR/éTica, but the relations with the people that comprise it may be scarce. Again, it is about appealing to the relations among people mediated by the institution, not to the relations with the institution itself, which is impossible anyhow.

During those days, we tried to project the interests of the people that comprise TEOR/éTica in the form of concrete and realizable projects, from the most trivial to the most fantastic. Not only did we write them, we imagined them happening and failing, we imagined them so much that they were as real as we were. In those days, we lived many lives.

I do not know what happened between us, but imagining together was simple. It could be because our voices forgot their own ego and focused exclusively on contributing to

It was the sum of all of us, a kind of micro-community bonded in the most spontaneous way, as can only be achieved by the collective desire to believe that art serves precisely for that: to blur the differences that prevent us from seeing that we are doing something together, anything, and that that is enough.

During those summer days, it was easy to forget the generalized polarity that exists between cultural institutions and artists, that parody where each part tugs to its side until the rope breaks, again and again. For some perverse mystery, there always seem to be ropes. And while others played with ropes, we were learning to literally weave a kind of timeout where the usual opponents forgot we were opponents. We already knew that, but the possibility of coexisting in those terms was a real surprise.

We also knew that this state of exception in which we live, of coexistence focused on collective interests, was not only a privilege, but the goal. Therefore, with the passing of days, the already permeable group became bigger. Banga cannot happen inside four walls, so we organized a walk with new friends, a surprise event where we visited others,

and we invited everyone to a party, because we wanted to meet them, because we wanted to tell them that they were also part of something.

I think the real purpose of doing Banga is trying to do Banga every day, to fight to perpetuate that state of exception where we all have the right to ask for a timeout and be heard, to sit in a circle and decide what is best for us all.

And they, as we, all kept that task in mind, because the idea seduces us, because it seems possible, and we want it that way. They kept all the notes, ideas, projects, all the laughter, the photos, the memories; and the most difficult task of all: to allow oneself to be reimagined, and also to reimagine what we from the outside simply call TEOR/ĂŠTica.

“TO SWING OR NOT TO SWING”: considering Arts Collaboratory and its Assemblies as romantic affairs

his text started as a recorded hangout session between the respective Skype accounts belonging to Syaifiatudina from KUNCI Cultural Studies Center (Yogyakarta) and farid rakun from ruangrupa (Jakarta), taking place on 7 May 2018. The session was then transcribed, edited, shortened, rearranged and translated to fulfill the editors’ initial request. The conversation was originally conducted in Bahasa Indonesia, then transcribed by Khairunnisa, edited by Syafiatudina, to then finally transformed into English by farid rakun.

Arts Collaboratory (hereafter shortened and referred to as AC) is an ecosystem of twenty-five like-minded organizations situated predominantly in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America, all of whom are focused on collective governance. The organizations engage in expanded artistic and curatorial practices for social change, as well as sustainability practices in their respective contexts, with the aim of being effective in and beyond the field of art. The network operates as an active ecosystem, where knowledge and strengths are brought together and harvested in processes of collective organization. It is a radical experiment in exploring the potentiality of art and social transformation when the experiences, dreams, and critical reflections of cultural practitioners from across the globe are allowed to meet.

Since 2014, AC holds annual Assembly, as one of the forms of its members-only gatherings, conducted to

produce and develop collaborative projects between the participating organizations.1

ON POLYAMORY FARID RAKUN (F): I have an excellent analogy to explain Arts Collaboratory. The analogy was actually brought up in a conversation here, in and about Gudang Sarinah Ekosistem—not necessarily for Arts Collaboratory. At least MG, Arman and Asung2 were there. To expand further, since 2014, the most regular form of gatherings utilized by AC is the Assembly, held annually by one of its members in their respective context or country.

From 2014, the organizations and countries by and in which AC Assemblies have been held are: ruangrupa (Jakarta, Indonesia) and KUNCI (Yogyakarta, Indonesia); RAW Material Company and Ker Thiossane (both in Dakar, Senegal); Art Group 705 (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan); TEOR/etica (San Jose, Costa Rica); Al-Ma’mal (Jerusalem, Palestine) and Riwaq (Ramallah, Palestine) together with Ashkal Alwan (Beirut, Lebanon).

"It is awkward, I know, exactly because it should be awkward" Imagine each of the AC member organizations as a separate functioning household. Each of us –like any regular household— have children, in the forms of programmes.

In the structure of AC, these households were then made to form another overarching household—an orgy or a swinger arrangement, if you like.

This umbrella unit is formed to further produce other children. It is awkward, I know, exactly because it should be awkward. It is an unnatural union. What kind of children could Hansel from Zoolander3 (and his swinger tribe) raise?

Things got more complicated in AC, as there are previous children: each of our organizations’ existing programmes.

The question also became what to do with the new child, in relation to the old ones. This new child would have no clear cultural identity, geography or even his-(or her-)story.

This entity would be frighteningly refreshing. Finance and legality, taken for granted previously, became a hot topic to discuss internally in this swinging household.

This is an even funnier question, given we’re both Indonesian:4 what religion would it be born with, realizing that each of its parents have faith in so many different things at once?

Maybe it’s only fair if all of its parents—all of us—drop all our faiths at once, wouldn’t it?

S: Collectively dropping our old children—our existing

programmes?

This question is similar to our collective question in AC. SYAFIATUDINA (S): I’ve never watched Zoolander.

F: But you get the analogy?

In its sequel, Hansel lived in a nondescript desert with his polyamorous tribe. In the beginning of the movie, Hansel faced a crisis when the tribe got pregnant (I don’t remember whether it was clear who actually was expecting). He lost his nerve over thinking on how to raise this child in the future. This disagreement, is what Hansel was afraid of, its exactly our condition in AC.

F: Wow, that is even more extreme. But I was talking

about dropping only the faiths. Again, because we’re Indonesians—imagine that this child (and this child only) will then be raised believing in Judaism.5 It is not unlike how we ended up using Bahasa Indonesia as our national tongue.6 S: With this brand new faith, no one would be more expe-

rienced than others. We would all be opening a new page.

To take the analogy further, if this child failed in life… It would…

Here, I am rendering failure to be subjective. When failure was put on the table, forcing everyone to stare directly at its eyes, the very act opened different subjectivities to look for the reasons of it being a failure.

Why would AC be a failure as a network—would it lie in our household management? If AC was one big household of households, with our products serving as our collective children, I think this analogy works as well for me. Still, I honestly cannot help but feeling disgusted imagining us as a group of swingers. My question then would be: what do we refer to when we talk about AC, then? The household or its children (in the forms of collaborative projects, practical tools to run a collective or our politics)?

F: Our children are the consumable ones this way. How

to consume them, would be the next question.

S: Before going there, I think identifying what our product

is actually comes first. Without it we cannot know whether its a failure or not, can we?

F: … die.

S: That’s too ultimate of a failure. The only thing left for us

So, no. Not death. Something lighter… Like this child would grow to become a thief. Some of us would deem this to be a failure—to raise a thief. But other parents might disagree, deeming it to be a successful anti-establishment trait.

It makes our conversation about failure go nowhere. We are not able to go straight to what and where the failure is located. Failure always happens in a context. Let’s take our Assembly as a context. By using this analogy: it is when these 25 different households acted their love, which of these love-based actions came up as a failure?

This opens up another thread: about being a host. Every household develops and keeps its own particular hospitality to deal with guests in its brood. In the case of the guests being other households—could we turn the table to perceive that failure cannot automatically be failure of the host, but can also be failure of the guests? In order for a party to function, we don’t only need good host, but also good guests, do we?

Intangible, if you like" Going back to the art of being guests, a lot of times we take for granted that we knew how to host, so we expect a certain style of hosting based on our style from others.

But in my experience, this is never the case.

We come with a certain expectation in regards to a certain experience, but in reality the result is fully in the hands of the host. I believe the only way we could bridge this gap between expectation and reality is through learning to be generous guests. We should not be judgemental, for once. We should be in state of receiving, as opposed to demanding.

F: Well, maybe not as severe, but for me hosting is a proper

S: So this has become binary, to simplify what is success—

ABOUT ART OF GUEST OR “HOSTING OF ART”7 S: Have we ever talked about hosting as a skill? Would we,

art in itself. The feeling of a party, for example, depends a lot on the host. You can feel how a ruangrupa event is different from a KUNCI event, for instance. I am interested in this hosting as art to get into the tacit part of knowledge.

hospitable, we have succeeded in rendering failure more complex than we previously imagined.

F: Agreed. I think we might have discovered what could

be our biggest contribution to this journal: the realization that if there is a sense of failure in hosting, the fault might fall in the hands of the guests. It might be that they arrived with unreasonable demands, most possibly also unclearly articulated beforehand. We have taken for granted that hospitality should always come from the side of the host.

To follow up on our new logic and coming back to the swingers analogy, we might propose that a host should be privileged with the upper hands. Unlike the hospitality industry, these hosts are not (our) servants. There is someone who is opening the doors of her house to us. Humility should then fall upon us who are visiting, shouldn’t it?

It might be that the modern hospitality industry has changed this notion of being hosts and guests throughout the years. It is their fault. The “consumer is always right” way of thinking has suffocated our skills of being a good guest. Doesn’t it sound silly to utter that there is only bad hosts, while there is no bad guests?

Having said that, as a member of ruangrupa, I have to stress the importance of being idle as a host. It needs to seem like it is effortless. Any stress we actually feel cannot be transmitted. In the case of AC’s Costa Rica Assembly, this stress (although not clear) was transmitted.

S: In their reflective text, they expressed their effort to

suppress this very exact stress, though…

F: It went suppressed, restrained, censored, not worked

out…

S: Because in KUNCI—maybe because I am a masochist—I

could only be content if I could transmit my stress. It was only when everyone felt under pressure that I could feel the collective energy. There is rasa8 that could blur the distinction between a host and guests. When you are in KUNCI, you are also hosting, not exclusively being a guest.

I understand generosity—or hospitality in this matter—is attainable when pressures are shared. This complicates further this binary distinction between guest and host: you are a guest in your hosting, while I am hosting while also being a guest. One’s failure automatically becomes a collective failure. We can scrutinize further this problematic term, ‘collective failure’. But it’s for next time.

Finally, I have to say that Costa Rica Assembly for me was not a failure, but a fall out. It is not failing, but falling.

There, we realized and understood that our honeymoon was over. We have fallen from grace, got grounded. It is like when Adam and Eve fell from heaven to earth.

F: Sounds so religious.

S: Excuse my Catholic primary education. So when we fall

from grace, to the earth, we were forced to face reality.

We were made to think about mechanisms, systems, and bureaucracy.

This is a process we should go through, in my opinion.

This is the reason I refuse to consider it in the binary form of success-failure. This is an earth-grounding process.

Failing as falling, falling as failing… You know what I mean.

They are only there for the funds, and nothing more. We should be more blatant, maybe. Without any financial support, who will stay and who will go.

S: For understanding this, I think the metaphor of frequency

is useful. To be in the same frequency means we share similar positioning. Ideally we should be able to advance together at the same time.

It touches again a certain understanding of failure: the feeling of being stuck together—not going anywhere. I have become interested in interrogating the meaning of

And I am giving up in my effort to imagine that some day there will be a united vision of AC. To call a spade a spade,

We might not need it, but for some of us in AC, it gets frustrating when we neither move forward, nor backward. We seem to make one step forward, only to be followed by one step backward, ad infinitum.

F: In this case, I think the illusion of horizontality becomes

paramount. Because, although I would like all of us to sprint in progress, it is not my priority. I could live in peace with the fact, that we might not be going anywhere. Some of us in the network don’t think this way, though. Some of us have more dogs in the pit.

Horizontality brings the risk of becoming totalitarian, for which any communist state could serve as an example.

Horizontality is not an ideal state, as it never is natural so it needs to be forced, imposed.

Horizontality could work if it was reached organically.

It could be reached organically only if we have time. It has speed as is its enemy. In our reality, this is almost an impossibility.

STEPPING OUT OF THE COMMON PLACES: ALTER ACADEMIA o, now that? I could say this is the question we all ask ourselves once we complete our degree in Art. We spend approximately five years (more, for some) sitting in the classroom, in a bubble of semi-annual evaluations, individual and group projects, readings and homework that sometimes have little or nothing to do with the country’s or region’s contemporary artistic production.

S

Adhering to a series of guidelines that are met to earn each point and successfully pass the course. Following this logic, with the conclusion of formal studies comes uncertainty.

There is no longer a guide with which to comply, and you realize that your diploma does not represent much, nor does it ensure insertion in the artistic field.

With this I do not mean that academia is not necessary, as it is still an important keeper of knowledge, wisdom and experiences. However, sometimes its scheme is focused on manufacturing “works of art,” detracting from individual processes and their constant revision.

Luckily, as I faced that emptiness and fear, I was able to participate in the second edition of Alter Academia in 2017, a space I needed to assimilate what I had learned during my stay at university and, at the same time, to unlearn it: ways of seeing, problematizing and making art, discussing my

project or looking for references, abandoning the idea that only artists, books or scholars can be legitimate sources and perceiving other ways of getting information in everyday life. Dismantling structured chores and defined times to understand that it is not about the number of pieces you can create in one semester, but about the relevance they have. To stop producing exclusively from one emphasis (painting, engraving, sculpture, or others) and understand that the medium should not be limited to one technique.

Questioning language and the “domestic” (variables of my work), and appropriating them to resurface them, revising the communication strategies and archetypes I was using and the audience I want to talk to. These were also aspects that undoubtedly required self-criticism.

Based on all this, Alter Academia is more than a physical space or a workshop to produce for three months. It represented an ideal place to question my work, to break out of common spaces and try to give new directions to a process that I was building in a linear way, with a work methodology that was unconsciously becoming a recipe.

Rethinking, reviewing and reflecting definitely became the most substantial axes, as Pablo Hernández, one of the guests with whom we worked during those months, said: “Alter Academia, from its first version and with the same tone and mood of other recent projects in the Costa Rican artistic landscape, has wanted to start from that same position: to stop thinking of one’s work as unidirectional and one-dimensional production and place its participants in the position of re-thinking their own work outside the industrial and mercantile line of conceiving art.”

The residence then became a space where we allowed ourselves to be vulnerable without defining a clear path or objective, where errors were part of the process and did not mean failure; on the contrary, they generated other ways of seeing (a situation which, for five years, I did not allow myself or was not allowed to have). Working from there made us experiment without the pretense of making finished objects. To remove variables such as “work of

Therefore, getting in touch with other young artists (Andres Gudiño, Sara Mata, Sergio Rojas and the TEOR/éTica team) not only broadened the scope of my work, but also made me reflect on the importance of finding new ways to do, learn and build. It was also the perfect opportunity to be supportive of each Costa Rican and foreign resident’s knowledge, to see in them the same concerns and to imagine some solutions together.

This is necessary, because when you have the object so close, you lose sight of what is happening around you. We “self-quote”, and that insistence of seeing the work under

expand our views about our own projects. I believe that academic art institutions should broaden their limits and stop concentrating on the creation of works, they should abandon teaching mechanisms based on hermetic proposals encased in outdated curricula.

What do I wish to know? How do I imagine learning it?

Where does this desire stem from? How to visualize what I want to learn? These and other questions asked during our residence still resonate in my head, and I think that artistic education should start there. I say this because it makes more sense to begin by problematizing what I really want to learn and say, instead of completing a unidirectional guide, detached from my production or projection as an artist. The time has come for universities to provide this type of input and questions. These are tools to stimulate daily tasks and individual reflection, and they can easily

new horizons to explore. The outlines, notes, questions and premises during my residency helped me see my work from another point of view, with new possibilities and projections beyond the tools acquired in formal school education. Upon concluding Alter, I reaffirm the need for non-formal artistic education spaces in our country, to take us out of our usual scheme and focus on doing, and where points of encounter and dialogue can be established to

transcend the classroom to become an ongoing exercise to review and generate fresh ideas and to produce based on such queries.

As I said in the beginning, if we know beforehand that we will suffer a level of uncertainty when we go from being students to graduates –and that my experience is not an isolated event, but is shared by many–, we should demand a different type of university education. It is also important to take the initiative and get in touch with other young artists, breaking the barrier we have with certain institutions; to remember that rethinking is an exercise that requires time, effort and, although it is not tangible, it is indisputably necessary in any process of creation.

WORKING IN THE FERTILE CHAOS OF RESTRUCTURING e board the plane with the certainty that the exchange would be productive, but without concrete expectations, without anticipations or predictions. We arrived in San Jose thinking of the present and already infected by the joke about the clichéd confusion of Costa Rica / Puerto Rico, San Juan / San José, and all its possible permutations. Our “year” was just ending, and taking the time to calibrate our (more or less immediate) future out of our daily life seemed a great opportunity. The planning of our stay would have to wait a bit, and without thinking much we continued operating directly in the present moment. In TEOR/éTica they had the same idea, or else it was a case of conditions aligning out of pure synchrony.

Correction: We did have something clear, and it was that we would arrive and break the ice immediately, and once broken we were going to baptize it with Barrilito rum, which we had brought as a gift. The second day, we woke up late, feeling at home with family—to think that at some point we were suspicious that this residence might be a bit dull. Far from it.

Without giving much importance to unrolling roles and taking advantage of the confusion, we saw in this residence a great opportunity to share experiences, ways of working, and to vent frustrations. and work. On our part, we were transitioning our board of directors, and had new profiles for our program participants. Our current historical context is also different from when Beta-Local was founded. The latent conditions that led to the founding of the organization, which had been an omen back then, are a concrete reality today.

The trial period is over. On the one hand, we want to avoid the backlash while proposing ways of observing, working and being in Puerto Rico, but now crisis is inevitable. This sets the tone of our context.

Anyway, for now Marino Protti1 also works as ready-made: We are still systematizing what we learned and there will be time later for interpretation.

Towards the end of our stay, someone left a photocopy of religious propaganda under the garage door. The contents of the pamphlet used an earthquake in Nicoya to articulate an apocalyptic discourse linked to a punitive manifestation of nature. We saved it with the intention of doing something in the form of ready-made. The pamphlet conveyed a kind of sci-fi sensation when you held it in your hands. It would later be lost during another natural disaster, in different coordinates. Priorities changed, relegating the intentions of working on the pamphlet to other ideas and actions.

The evolution of this chronicle is marked by very strange times. Just when we returned from Costa Rica, we entered pure hurricane mode (at times, we are still in the midst of it). First Irma, as a practice round, then María as the great event. In part, this has altered the temporal effect intended to understand our Costa Rican experience.

Without drama or PTSD, we have to accept that the perception of time continues to be strange and intermittent. key. By thinking retrospectively about our residence in TEOR/éTica, interpretation is suddenly sensorial, still conjugated in the present. The changes brought by this hurricane season re-configured many of our plans and tasks as an organization. This meant a lot of heavy work for us, and our ninja skills were put to the test.

Many times, and without them knowing it, TEOR/éTica became our conscience, a mischievous conscience, of course. Without much pyrotechnics, our relationship has continued to develop during this time on a daily basis, despite the fact that we only “chat “every now and then.

This could be presented as a simple manifestation of friendship. We want to think of it as a concrete proposal regarding the coordinates from which organizations like ours can conspire.

Undoubtedly, our constant present has been annoying when materializing things, including friendship. Even so, they materialize. Maybe, for now, this apparent defect is a virtue. We cannot expect exchanges and collaborations to always flow. On occasion, even friendship is an overrated term in cultural production. But we should feel no guilt when it arises spontaneously. Taking advantage of that is a super power. Let the guilt be left to the Christians of Nicoya.

LISTENING SPACE TEOR/éTica + SEMILLAS n March 2017, in the context of the Amón Cultural Festival, someone left us in writing their thoughts on the neighborhood: “I am intrigued by the transvestites. I would like to take pictures of them.” In its apparent laxity or naive negligence, this statement offers substance and form to elaborate a treatise on the city, our ways of living it from prejudice, privilege and false distances; but, above all, about the ways in which we interpret, naturalize and appropriate its phenomena.

The anonymous text was posted on the “story clothesline,” one of the activities with which TEOR/éTica opened its doors during the Festival, among many other testimonies that collect memories of the neighborhood, childhood, symbols and perceptions that have been resonating in

the imaginaries of those who pass through Amón and its surroundings. The Simón Bolívar Zoo is a recurrent theme, and several people still contextualize this strip of San José as a threshold to access that place where caged animals were exhibited.

In a recent interview for the “Radio UPE!” podcast, trans artist and activist Natalia Porras, who is also a sex worker in the neighborhood, shared an analogy to outline her usual experience in the public space: “I tell you graphically:

Barrio Amón is a complex, paradoxical and changing place. Its ambiguity lies in the fact that, for decades, it has been postulated as downtown S ​​ an José’s historical and cultural “quadrant” par excellence. At the same time, its fate has been left to the car-centered encroachment of its public spaces, with the consequent introversion of private areas in islands that reject the outside world behind flirtatious but uncouth facades. This “aristocratic

neighborhood” (as some still call it), once the refuge of the capital’s bourgeoisie, has been devoured by noisy and indolent traffic that turns everything into an area of p ​​ assage and empties it of its sense of neighborhood.

Vocations and uses become transitory, and they change drastically between day and night, between working days and holidays. In a workshop held with artists to talk about this, it was said that Amón is an old man who watches time pass by from a timeless corner, knowing he is as much the master of his past as he is uncertain about his future.

In TEOR/éTica, heeding the call made in 2016 by the neighborhood association, the Technological Institute and other local entities that organize Amón Cultural1, we asked ourselves what, how and when we could contribute to the initiatives that seek to re-signify the neighborhood that has been home to the foundation for 19 years. Such questions led not to answers, but to an even wider range of questions. Since then, we have taken up the challenge as a good excuse to reflect on our role as a cultural entity in the area. We invited the Semillas2 association to collaborate, an interdisciplinary collective that promotes social-community architecture to improve the quality of public spaces and human habitats through intersectoral articulation and the co-management of participatory processes. Together we established a study group, which we called “UPE!” (to symbolize the act of the foundation that goes out to knock on the doors of the neighborhood). It has sought to become a mediating instance to nurture collective, critical and creative thinking about the neighborhood and its context.

We have allowed ourselves to elaborate a series of speculations, conjectures and queries regarding our epidermis, where we feel the contact that makes us recognize ourselves as part of the territory where we are located, and of its fabric. It has been a process of listening, examining emerging connections, of making explicit the implicit, questioning the edges that define what is “desirable” and what is marginal, calibrating detectors and recognizing our own ambiguities when interacting with other actors, and with their genuine concerns.

does not respond to deadlines. According to Subtramas4, the agency “translates into the capacity of the subject to generate non-hegemonic critical spaces of enunciation of the self, in and from the collective, to counteract the logic of control imposed on it. In this way, it challenges the hegemony of the normative, homogeneous and fixed to operate different nodes/agents that relate to each other and to the outside.”5 Instead of sophisticated, formal results, it is intended to foster empowered relationships from a place of legitimacy and not from the myths that tend to distort our readings of the socio-spatial and urban.

In the process, we have held gatherings, interviews, meetings, focus groups and workshops with participation of people representing sectors such as the arts, history, architecture, heritage, cultural management, landscaping, gender, urban groups, neighborhood organizations, police force, religious organizations, hotels and businesses, street dwellers, sex workers, Amón Cultural, TEC and

"It is not a technical or urban project; it is not a physical intervention. It consists of an agency of space" TEOR/éTica’s own staff. The purpose was to help articulate a collaborative platform to organize the symbolic and material space, as well as the processes that are under way and others potentially relevant to the neighborhood.

We seek to help visualize, amplify and open a candid and transparent dialogue amongst the diversity of voices and faces that coexist and shape the socio-cultural dimension of Amón.

As a result of this, in December 2017 we created the platform “Radio ¡UPE!”, a free and open monthly podcast to discuss the past, present and future of Barrio Amón, addressing significant issues together with guests from all sectors that act in and impact the area, in conversation spaces that simulate afternoon cafés in the heart of the neighborhood. To date, four emissions of the podcast have been published. To access them, visit TEOR/éTica’s website.

Another handwritten note on the ‘clothesline’ said: “A cup of coffee at the end of the afternoon, watching a sign that says ‘for sale’ became a dream: to live in Barrio Amón

... a dream that has come true :) A neighborhood full of history, people and characters.” To whom does the public space in Amón belong? We ask ourselves. And how will their private spaces continue transforming? While some niches speculate with gentrification and related ghosts, and others dream of heritage and melancholy, there are those who long for an inclusive coexistence and claim their right to the city. From here, we will continue asking questions (to) ourselves.

More and more, we become a sort of air traffic controller. We have so many open fronts that our energy is spent on trying to keep everything on its right course to avoid a collapse.

Multitasking on projects has made us divide our attention span into small windows. While I try to write this text, I am distracted, I respond a message, I send an email that I forgot to send and I google the correct way to refer to “scrolling” in spanish. The problem with multitasking is not so much the distraction, but the lack of perspective.

We are occupied with so much at the same time that we lose distance. It is difficult for us to stop to analyze and follow the line of development of what we are doing.

This text is a little bit of that, an attempt to stop. With a short amount of time, I try to look back to identify which personal search and external inputs managed to survive the environmental distractions in order to influence what I do today. As a self imposition and masochist practice, I decide not to sit down to write until it’s too late. This, according to me, as a way to throw around ideas in my head before they arrive on to the paper, well, the monitor.

I do not know if this strategy was a good or bad idea, but we are out of time to question it.

Working from small paragraphs, letting time go by between one and the other, was a way to organize myself little by little. Moving forward was more difficult for me than it should have been. When I tried to write something that could be useful to somebody else, the results seemed contrived and stiff. So, I returned to the original search of understanding this as a personal revision, organizing unhinged ideas in my head. Thus, this exercise does not pretend to be of use for nobody else.

My interest in putting to the test new pedagogical and mediation options began in 2016 during the experience of the LAB. This was a space in which architects and performing artists worked together for eight months, first in a house, and later in a building in San José. Beyond the content or the learning structures, the space itself and the way of using it were key for building a bond between the participants. Sharing coffee, cooking together, entering the space wearing only socks to keep it clean were small gestures that detonated a learning dynamic very different to any other previous experience. It is interesting how a simple change on the phenomenons of use of the architectonic derived in new

socializing experiences. Examples like this confirm once more that architecture is not about a construction, but about bonds: a bond with another, within a space.

At the beginning of 2017, from the periphery, I was part of the restructuring and self-critical process permitted by the Banga done in TEOR/éTica. For me, the biggest success of this experience was the possibility to understand this institution as the sum of its subjectivities. This gave a name and a face to what before was perceived as a closed and formal facade. The simple action of recognizing each other, from a bodily condition, allowed an approach that permitted the collaboration of people who up to that point had remained on the margins.

As a first point of encounter, taking advantage of the publishing of the book Agítese antes de usar (Shake before using) and the workshop Hábitos de Aprendizaje

(Learning Habits) by Renata Cervetto, we co-organized a small event [I open Facebook, look for the description of the event, copy and paste] … an open conversation about the emergence of unexpected spaces of shared learning.

A dialogue about the ways in which we relate with the pedagogical and the modes of sharing ignorance…

The result of this encounter, as often happens in spaces of this nature, was a group catharsis on the dissatisfaction we have with the educational models of art and architecture schools, the power dynamics between professors and students, and how little encouragement is given to research and spontaneous discovery. The end of the discussion and the following workshop with Renata brought up a series of questions concerning the ways in which we articulate learning spaces: [I go to my desktop, I search for the PDF “Cómo vivir solos” (How to live alone), I skim through it, copy and paste] How to sustain a collective that preserves the dimension of singularity? How to create heterogeneous spaces, with their own tonalities, different atmospheres, in which each person can engage in their own way? How to maintain an availability that propitiates encounters, but does not impose them, an attention that allows for contact and preserves alterity? How to give randomness a place without programing it? How to sustain a gentleness that allows the emergence of a discussion, there where an affective desert grows? These questions, to which I come back constantly as a reference for my current processes, do not pretend at all to have one answer, but to be repeated in loop everytime we begin a collaborative and learning process. A few months later, something similar happened with a presentation by Monica Hoff, an hour and a half of intense bombardment of information. It was so much that only a few notes of that encounter survive in my cellphone, and one clear idea that sums up everything and, because of its strength and simplicity, was etched into my memory: education is only effective if it is affective.

How to articulate an experience of affective learning? [I let a few days go by]

Throughout the two weeks that passed from the moment I was invited to write this text and when I finally sat down to write, I went over this question in my head over and over again. I wrote and rewrote in my head possible scenes, all quite unsuccessful. Now, when time is running out, I cannot help but think that affection begins from the most elemental: the body. It is an answer that seems obvious, but in its obviousness, it is not given the importance it requires. Affection begins with proximity, trust and contact. To put it another way, it begins with bodies within a space, their relation and forms of inhabiting.

The idea of the bodily is trapped in a duality. On one hand, there is an excessive exaltation of the aestheticized and eroticized body, parallel to a cult to intelligence and creativity. These two universes - the intellectual and

I find it interesting how the bodily dimension is undervalued in the architectonic discourse, almost erased from its pedagogical processes. It seems that we forget that really, it is through the body that we learn about the space and we construct meaning. [I am distracted thinking about how necessary it is to have a class on this in school, maybe in the first or second semester. I remember the books that are on the way. I check my email to see when they arrive. “Delayed,� it says at the end.]

That bond is the key for collaboration. Affective learning motivates the strength of subjectivity. It is a heterogeneous mixture, in which each one of its parts is recognizable, allowing for non linear thought, engagement and one’s knowledge as the learning engine for another’s learning process.

One step further from the bodily is the domestic space.

House-Body/ Body-House as the following level of intimacy.

The experience with the LAB was very revealing in that sense. The way of using both spaces in which we worked, even though they were not proper houses, was charged with a high quota of domesticity: cooking, eating, playing and even sleeping in the same space were ways of constructing conviviality and cohabitation. To think about learning

models that work as housing spaces is an interesting approach to foment the building of affective and trust bonds.To open one’s house is a powerful gesture, selfless and horizontal, a small action that allows the other to be part of one’s own rituals and dynamics.

In closing, and to be faithful to my decision of understanding this exercise as a personal revision without major aspirations, I end by throwing about a series of questions for my futures work processes: How can we learn by ourselves and together at the same time? How can we begin a learning process from a bodily and sensitive dimension? How are the forms of use of the spatial a tool for an affective learning process? How do we generate spaces for collaboration that feel like being in the living room of a house? How to open up the domestic space for a selfless and horizontal encounter? How do we begin processes from conviviality and cohabitation that result in pedagogical experiences? How to foment leisure, informal conversation and the drift as tools for discovery?
