G5 BRITISH CRAFT PAVILION craftscouncil.org.uk – The Crafts Council and the London Design Fair are delighted to introduce the first British Craft Pavilion at the 2016 edition of the London Design Festival. The British Craft Pavilion 2016 will showcase a host of designers, makers and crafts people working through a range of mediums such as glass, ceramics and wood to create contemporary craft pieces. Employing intelligent ways of thinking and experimental ways of making, this year’s exhibitors are reimagining and reviving British craft.

The British Craft Pavilion will showcase more than twenty eminent designers and makers, as part of London Design Fair. Selected by an industry panel, comprising of representatives from Crafts Council, London Design Fair and Grant Gibson of Crafts magazine, the pavilion will showcase Britain’s most prominent contemporary craft pieces.

CC CRAFTS COUNCIL DIRECTORY PRESENTS craftscouncil.org.uk – Crafts Council Directory and Contemporary Applied Arts jointly present a collection ofbeautiful dining settings, that showcase exceptional talent from the Crafts Council Directory. Curated in partnership with Contemporary Applied Arts and the National Trust, the settings will be part of the British Craft Pavilion at London Design Fair – running from the 22nd to 25th September – as part of London Design Festival 2016.

NATURE LAB craftscouncil.org.uk – Crafts Council and The New Craftsmen present Nature Lab – an immersive installation of contemporary British craft at London Design Fair.

It is an immersive experience telling the story of nature transformed by six British craft talents and presented by Crafts Council and The New Craftsmen. Each maker has developed radical new techniques to transform such everyday substances as wood, sand, salt, clay, flowers and ice into objects of wonder.

Nature Lab was first shown at Design Miami/ Basel in June 2016. In the installation, designed

by Gitta Gschwendtner, wild, encroaching nature is transmuted by skilled hands and ingenious minds into elemental objects that emerge from the darkness to conjure wonder and intrigue.

A laboratory of nature will present what looks like insect glass, flower fossils and ice caught at the moment of melting.

Featuring Eleanor Lakelin, Emily Gardiner, Jochen Holz, Joseph Harrington, Marcin Rusak, Marlène Huissoud.

DESIGN IN SOUTH ITALY S90 ice.gov.it – Presented by the Italian Trade Commission (ICE), Design in South Italy will return for a second year to the London Design Festival bringing an edit of designers and brands from four southern Italian regions – Calabria, Campania, Puglia and Sicilia – to Super Brands London 2016.

Design in South Italy is an opportunity to discover the unique creativity and craftsmanship by some of these region’s best designers and studios. The exhibition will feature classic and contemporary products alongside a varied selection of surface material applications and coverings.

The initiative is part of ICE’s Piano Export Sud (Export Plan for the Convergence Regions), designed to support and enable companies from the southern regions to express their full potential for creativity and excellence while connecting with a global design market in London.

barbarafranc.co.uk – Barbara Franc creates creatures full of life and attitude, often made to illustrate proverbs and old wives curious and cautionary tales, collected from around the world. The pieces are made from recycled, discarded and found objects, from car windscreen wipers and fish knives, to brass cupboard handles and kilt pins; “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”.

23 CATHRYN SHILLING GLASS

cathrynshilling.co.uk – Cathryn Shilling is an internationally renowned glass artist, living and working in London. After graduating in Graphic Design from Central School of Art and Design in London, Cathryn worked as a Designer until her family’s move to the USA in 2001 prompted her to pursue a new and exciting creative direction. She studied the art and craft of Stained Glass in Connecticut and then on her return to London in 2004 Cathryn began studying and working with kiln formed glass as well as becoming a student of blown glass at Peter Layton’s London Glassblowing Studio. In 2007 she began making in a studio near her home in London working alongside three other glass artists. In January 2010 Cathryn began to work with Peter Layton in The Gallery at London Glassblowing as Curator and Exhibition Coordinator.

24 ELLA ROBINSON ellarobinson.com – Ella Robinson’s vibrantly coloured interior artworks are uniquely crafted using beachcombed materials or found objects and fragments, collected from the street. The individual characteristics, shapes and colours of the driftwood and fragments provide inspiration for how they will be reinvented or curated. Each find is given a new lease of life, becoming a Decorative Object or forming part of a collection. Decorative Objects are stitched or wrapped wooden pieces (either found or drift wood), that are combined with colourful textile or plastic threads through the drilling of precise holes. Collections are box-framed artworks curated from found or beachcombed items that are ordered by colour or by size. Driftwood, plastics, corks, lighters and ceramics are just some of the items that are selectively beachcombed from the British coastline, but mainly Brighton Beach, by Robinson herself. She works from her rural Hertfordshire studio but

plants in the forest, to each mark of the hand on an object, their work endeavours to tell a story.

21 ELLIOTT CERAMICS

elliottceramics.com – Elliott Ceramics is the work of South London based potter Elliott Denny.

Working mainly in thrown porcelain Elliott has a minimalist approach to pottery, carefully considering each design, stripping away excess details to create beautifully modest tableware.

A muted colour palette complements these simple forms, stain is worked into the body of the clay and thrown on the wheel. As the stain disperses throughout the porcelain, it leaves a subtle record of the makers touch and the rotation of the wheel. The exterior of each piece is unglazed and sanded smooth whilst a clear glaze is applied to the interior to seal the surface and create a contrast between inside and out.

Elliott’s route to contemporary pottery was born from a love of process and making, alongside ceramics he practices as a printmaker and designer working with analogue techniques such as letterpress and stencil duplicating.

12 GEORGINA BRETT CHINNERY

georginabrettchinnery.com – Since an early age, Georgina Brett Chinnery has been interested in creating tangible sculptural forms. With leather as her medium, she exploits traditional leather working techniques that enables the tactile essence of material, which is an integral aspect to her work. The results are collectable sculptural forms and objets d’arts.

Why birds? They are intelligent two legged creatures that soar above us.

Having a ‘bird’s eye view’ on our world, the artist perceives this perspective to symbolise freedom. Having social organisations much like our own, each of Georgina’s birds represents individual meanings that relate to the variances between different human beings. Bird Brain delves into the conscious and asks the viewer how we see ourselves and others, for nothing is always as it seems.

18 FOREST + FOUND

forest-and-found.com – Forest + Found is a sustainable craft and design partnership set up by Max Bainbridge and Abigail Booth in late 2014. Both having a background in Fine Art, their practice has an emphasis on material and process. Working with traditional methods of craft they produce contemporary wooden objects and hand stitched textiles. Their focus is on the use of hand tools and the direct experience of hand crafting the object. Simple acts of carving, hand stitching and natural dyeing are points of access in how they refine and develop their craft practice. Every object made in their London workshop has a direct relationship to the landscape and its architectural environment through the use of natural materials and considered design. 20 HEIDI HARRINGTON

heidiharrington.co.uk – With over 15 years experience in working with clay, Heidi specializes in Ceramics and Print. She takes an innovative approach to clay and image, developed during her studies both at Bath School of Art and the Royal College of Art. Using her own photography as a starting point, Heidi

then prints clay images and forms them into decorative interior pieces including wall plates and bowls. The images are allowed to gently stretch and move during the making process leaving each piece in the edition unique. She is inspired by both the movement and stillness in nature and hopes to capture these fleeting moments in the surface and forms of her porcelain.

11 J.SHORROCK

jshorrock.com – John and James Shorrock. John does all the making and James handles the digital side of things. They are based in Northern England and work out of a large workshop and wood store on the family farm.

John mainly uses hardwoods grown in the North West of England, specifically Elm burr, Sycamore, Cherry, Laburnum and Silver Birch. Most of the wood that is used is sourced from local tree surgeons who let John and James know when they have a tree which they think is suitable for John’s style of wood turning. More often than not these are trees that have been felled because they were dead, diseased or dangerous. If possible they buy whole trees and always like to know where they had grown; this allows John to retain the tree’s spirit and character in the pieces using the defects and natural shapes to their best advantage.

With most wood, John visualises the shape he wants before starting a piece.

As the piece develops, he takes careful note of the features and works the final shape according to the grain and natural edges as they emerge. He uses custombuilt tools for roughing out the shape and hollowing the piece. All of the pieces are finished with Polyx oil to bring out the natural markings of the wood.

25 LEONORA RICHARDSON lrichardsonceramic.co.uk – Leonora Richardson graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in 2011, with a First Class Honours Degree in Ceramic Design. Her

seeks out the charm of the coast as frequently as she can.

chosen medium of ceramic clay allows her to create and express organic built forms, which emphasise the repetition and individuality of each piece. Leonora’s work is inspired by the relationship between art and science and she develops and creates all the pieces individually, while making installations and one-off pieces.

Leonora works from her studio, located at The Muse Studios in a very small Mews in North London.

lindabloomfield.co.uk – Linda Bloomfield makes hand-thrown porcelain bottles, vases and tableware with tactile satin matt glazes and colour on the inside. Her colour combinations are inspired by midcentury textiles.

Her latest work comprises still life installations of bottles inspired by Morandi paintings. The tactile surfaces encourage the user to pick up and hold the pots.

1 LOUISE GARDINER

lougardiner.co.uk – Louise Gardiner is a British artist and designer producing unique one off pieces of contemporary embroidery to commission.

Originally known for her world of wonderful and crazy characters that you may recognize from her range of cards and wrapping paper with Woodmansterne, ‘In Stitches’, Gardiner’s embroideries now explode off the canvas and are inspired by nature, music and creative emotion. She has exhibited at The Saatchi Gallery, in London’s famous Liberty windows on Regents Street and demonstarted for Jenny Murray on Woman’s hour.

Gardiner’s work has entertained a wide variety of people at exhibitions and talks and she now has an established career as an artist and teacher. She pushes this niche art form in new directions as much as possible, often working on large canvasses and continuously promoting stitch as

an exciting, rich and beautiful medium, which it is!

14 MAX JACQUARD GLASS STUDIO

maxjacquard.com – Max Jacquard is widely recognised for his innovative techniques and concepts in the field of kiln-formed glass. His work combines personal narratives with a rich mix of cultural influences including archeology, alchemy, science and craft traditions. At this year’s London Design Fair Max Jacquard will present itself as a Studio for the first time with a selection of cast bowls and vessels. These will be exhibited with a choice selection of one-off art works.

Inspiration for the new range of textural landscape bowls is drawn from sacred pagan and pilgrim sites across Great Britain. Imprints of ancient yew trees, paths of note and sacred waterbeds are the forms from which these works are taken. Along side these sculptural bowls is a new collection of core cast Rock vessels produced in collaboration with artist Dawn Bendick.

The unusual exterior forms of these vessels echo their internal rock shape creating a mysterious secondary layer, intrinsically coloured with glass layers creating veins and stratified patterns in the rock.

22 OWEN LEATHER owenleather.com – Owen Leather goods are crafted in north London by leatherworker Harry Owen.

All cutting, burnishing and stitching is done entirely by hand.

This year at LDF Harry will be showing a variety of new bags, small goods and belts. This work embraces the needs of contemporary lifestyles, designed for now, with the enduring qualities of classic luggage. Vegetable tanned leathers and uncomplicated forms draw attention to fine detailing, a high level of craftsmanship and the natural beauty of the materials.

Harry’s obsession with leather articles comes from the seductive quality of

the material, and a fascination with objects we carry with us. Leather ages and reacts to its changing environment, becoming intertwined with the personal narrative of the user. Durable leather goods facilitate long and meaningful user object relationships, slow down consumption and foster a deeper connection between user and maker.

paulwearingceramics.com – Paul Wearing makes unique hand-built sculptural stoneware vessels for interiors.

Through the glazed surface of cylindrical and elliptical vessel forms his focus is on temporal landscapes, exploring a visceral sense and physical feel for nature and its seasons. It is therefore the textures found on surfaces within diverse urban and rural environments that are fundamental to his practice. The relationship between slower emerging life cycles and the making process leading to alchemical developments within the kiln underpins the work: a dialogue between the handmade and manifestations of nature.

26 STUART AKROYD CONTEMPORARY GLASS stuartakroydglass.com – Stuart Akroyd is an award winning studio glass designer-maker based in the UK. He creates forms in vibrant colours and organic shapes. Instantly identifiable, his work possesses a sense of movement and grace within the solid form.

Stuart’s designs begin with an idea inspired by the world around him, after sketching the designs he progresses them by experimenting with the material and making a 3D form. These initial glass prototypes are then further refined to produce the final piece.

Stuart’s latest sculptural pieces, titled ‘Intention’, are a perfect example of this; inspired by the ‘Skylon’ structure (which became the symbol of the 1951 Festival of Britain) they are a solid stretched form encasing vibrant colours and presented on a steel stand.

13 ZOË HILLYARD CERAMIC PATCHWORK

zoehillyard.com – Ceramic Patchwork is Zoë’s creative and distinctive solution to the challenge of mending broken ceramics, which sees her apply the tradition of hand-stitched patchwork in a completely new way.

Establishing the brand in 2010, she has been exhibiting her award-winning work to the amazement and delight of audiences ever since.

Reassembled using only fabric, tension and stitch, Zoë’s exquisitely handcrafted vessels are seductively tactile, playing with colour, pattern and structure. Each one is unique, with a flawed beauty that celebrates imperfection. Pieces can simply be the result of an interesting combination of unconnected, secondary sourced items; equally, they can be a commission tore-work imagery, textiles or ceramic possessions that have sentimental or historic value.

We chose the London Design Fair because it is one of the biggest events of the London Design Festival ... we wanted to be in a place where everything is happening – if someone wants to see a variety and broad spectrum of design, they come to the Fair.

Hall G5 British Craft Pavilion, Nature Lab ELEANOR LAKELIN eleanorlakelin.com – Eleanor makes vessels and sculptural forms in wood using a lathe and carving tools – employing traditional and modern processes. The provenance of materials is important and she works sustainably using trees felled in the British Isles. Eleanor peels back bark to reveal the organic chaos that can exist in the material itself or builds up layers of texture through carving and sandblasting. She uses the vessel form and surface pattern to explore the layers and fissures between creation and decay.

EMILY GARDINER emilygardiner.com – The physicality of matter and the convergence and collision of materials is at the heart of Emily’s sculptural ceramic work, whether exploring underlying elements of chaos and order, symbiosis and growth or the physical structure of glaze.

Driven by a passion for experimentation and a desire to push materials to the limit, she embraces unpredictability; ‘To control every element dilutes the energy in a piece; there needs to be a dialogue with the material for it to be interesting to me.

I think of myself almost as a ceramic explorer, always searching and testing new ideas and possibilities.’

JOSEPH HARRINGTON josephharrington.co.uk – Joseph Harrington is a sculptor working predominantly in cast glass.

He graduated with an MA in Ceramics and Glass from the Royal College of Art in 2006, and won a Crafts Council Development Award in 2007. Joseph has exhibited both nationally and internationally. In 2010 he was selected for the Jerwood Contemporary Makers exhibition in Edinburgh and London, as well as in the 2012 International Festival of Glass Biennale.

The main principle within his work is to create a sense of time and movement within a permanent object. Joseph has a fascination with turning one thing into another, the reaction of materials and energies acting upon each other.

He uses a direct approach with the modelling material to provide an energetic, spontaneous working method and creative mindset. This energy lives on within the work, giving a sense of progression and evolution within a solid permanent form.

He has developed a unique working method using ice as a modeling medium. The ice is eroded and sculpted with salt then cast into glass, capturing a moment in time as the ice is melting.

THE PUBLISHING HOUSE designcurial.com fleafollyarchitects.com usm.com – Blueprint magazine has teamed up with FleaFollyArchitects and USM modular furniture to create The Publishing House at the London Design Fair in the Old Truman Brewery during the London Design Festival.

The Publishing House is a pavilion made out of more than 2,000 modular pieces from USM modular furniture and completely clad on the exterior surface with Blueprint magazines. This will create a small room on the inside, which will be a haven from the hustle and bustle of the show and USM invites you to come in and sit a while and Make It Yours!

Blueprint editor Johnny Tucker says: ‘This is the first time Blueprint has been involved in a pavilion since 1995, when we commissioned Zaha Hadid to produce her first built structure in the UK. This is promising to be every bit as exciting as that!’

DARC MAGAZINE darcmagazine.com – The darc / mondo*arc media space will be showing three immersive, interactive lighting installations that will first be shown at the darc awards / architectural event, darc night, on September 15th 2016 at MC Motors in London organised by mondo*arc and darc magazines together with creative consultants Light Collective.

The darc awards / architectural is a celebration of the world’s best lighting design and is the world’s only peer-to-peer lighting design awards. darc night is a unique event to celebrate the winners of darc awards / architectural consisting of street food, a free bar and sixteen light installations by top lighting designers and manufacturers.

The darc night installations will be 2.5sqm cubes where the visitor will be able to walk into the space to experience and interact with the light.

The cubes will be designed by top lighting design practices in collaboration with high-end lighting manufacturers – Arup with Cooledge, Lighting Design International with KKDC and MS CHO Studio with Applelec.

The cubes will be housed within a molo Softwall Modular system – an innovative flexible wall that is part of MoMA’s permanent collection in New York.

LIU MALMSTEN & SWEDISH WOOD malmstenwoodlights.com – The graduate students from the furniture design program at Carl Malmsten Furniture Studies have in a collaboration with ateljé Lyktan been commissioned to work with LED and pine.

Since an inspirational trip down to Åhus, in the southern part of Sweden, and ateljé Lyktan’s factory a creative design process has been going on. With the use of experimental work with the LED light they have set shape to their

design ideas. Svenskt Trä has contributed with pine to the project. The result is eight unique and exciting light fixtures for both private and public environments.

THE ROYAL DANISH ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS, SCHOOL OF DESIGN kadk.dk – The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Design (KADK) presents a range of cuttingedge trends and creative solutions, curated among our 140 graduate projects in 2016.

At KADK we educate designers that contribute with solutions to social, cultural and economic growth. The exhibition showcases, amongst others, a Codesign project ’Chemo to go, please!’ that partners with two major Danish hospitals on a project about chemotherapy treatment at home.

On show are also textile designs, exploring colours and materiality as a way to improve life and wellbeing, a game about maximising moneymaking through bank loans and credit, tableware designed in collaboration with Royal Copenhagen, flexible furniture for both indoors and outdoors use in tiny housing, and many more projects – all of the highest quality from business, artistic and scientific points of view, with solutions that relate to the users of design, to the environment, and to making a difference to our lives.

In China, we think and criticise the cutting-edge design issues under the premise of respecting the traditional culture. China’s traditional culture and crafts are an important source and spirit of Chinese design; we need to start from the perspective of modern design and look for a new research system for traditional hand crafts in modern living context.”

Modern activation of traditional crafts retains and restores a variety of information that Chinese traditional culture carries in a certain extent. THE DESIGN MUSEUM ON LOAN – DESIGNERS IN RESIDENCE ALUMNI SHOWCASE designmuseum.org – The Design Museum is building the world’s leading museum devoted to architecture and design and will reopen its doors in the former Commonwealth Institute, in Kensington on the 24 November 2016.

Join the Design Museum in the Project Space at London Design Fair for a celebration of the annual programme Designers in Residence.

2016 is the ninth year of the residency, which provides a platform to celebrate new and emerging designers at an early stage in their career. Alumni include Asif Khan, Bethan Laura Wood, Giles Miller, Yuri Suzuki, Tomas Alonso and Sarah van Gameren. A timeline, originally designed for the Design Museum by Martino Gamper and Bibliotheque and adapted for The London Design Fair, will look back and celebrate the alumni, revisiting the work that has been commissioned over the years. The display will introduce this year’s selected designers, who are currently developing new work in response to the theme ‘Open’, which will be revealed in a designated studio as part of the opening programme in Kensington. The display will also announce the theme for 2017, inviting the next generation of designers to apply and be part of the Design

THIS IS INDIA SUPPORTED BY INDELUST thisisindia.co.uk – The London Design Fair hosts the largest collection of international exhibitions, designers, brands and country pavilions in one destination during the London Design Festival annually.

For this the 10th Anniversary of the Fair we have decided to invite a guest country to join us in our celebrations. With an increasing overview of the global design scene we have been observing with great interest the number of new independent designers and studio from India making their first inroads on the global design scene.

For this reason, India has been selected to be our first annual guest country pavilion at the London Design Fair 2016.

Titled This is India the pavilion will include 12 emerging and established India-centric designers and brands across product, textile and furniture; offering a renewed but intimate perspective on established and emerging design practices from India today. Continuing with the all Indian line-up the Fair has invited Spandana Gopal of Tiipoi to cocurate This is India, alongside Jimmy MacDonald founder & director of the London Design Fair, with exhibition design by Kangan Arora.

I arrived at the London Design Fair at 9am for coffee and cinnamon buns at 100% Norway and left at 7pm after a drink with founder and director Jimmy MacDonald – ten hours at one show seems like a lot when there’s so much to see at the London Design Festival, but there was so much to see at the Fair and its satellite shows, that somehow even ten hours wasn’t quite enough.

I wanted to celebrate this by drawing parallels with everyday household leather objects. I’ve been studying traditional sports equipment like basketballs and boxing gloves which radiate durability and craftsmanship. In particular I became fixated on punch bags. There’s something about the shape and proportion that feels very human in scale and it got me thinking about the way some boxers grab the bag between blows. In the design I’ve taken the cylindrical shape of the punch bag and curled it up, holding it in place between the two front legs of the chair.

The legs compress into the upholstery to emphasise the soft structure inviting the user to wrap their arms around it as boxers do. We have chosen the best quality, thick leather to echo the heavy duty nature of the punch bag.”

The designer was fascinated, in fact, by the intertwining technique typical to these valleys, once used for making baskets and typical “gerle” (conical wicker baskets), and chose to repeat this element within the interior. The furniture design which is to be presented in London is a modular structure which can be arranged according to the needs and taste of the customer, made of larch wood complimented by the presence of an intertwining element. It is a versatile proposal, which is customisable and contemporary in its flexibility, but at the same time carries forward the Trentino tradition of craftsmanship.

“In researching the rich heritage of Trentino I discovered that the region has a strong tradition of basket making.

I wanted to reflect the diversity of vessels woven in a contemporary piece, combined with timber commonly found in the region. I wanted to capture the beauty and texture of woven surfaces in a functional and versatile piece, which celebrates the landscape and craft of Trentino, and offers an opportunity to show the high quality of the work produced in the region. The initiative is part of ICE’s Piano Export Sud (Export Plan for the Convergence Regions), designed to support and enable companies from the southern regions to express their full potential for creativity and craftsmanship in a global market.

Three southern Italian architects based in London will join the discussion sharing personal experiences in working with traditional materials from southern Italy, using the knowledge and skills of local companies and craftsmen.
