COVID-19 and Tennis Europe Aside from the disruption caused to the Junior Tour, the current crisis also forced the postponement of the European Senior Championships, due to be held in Pörtschach (AUT) in June. A new date will be announced as soon as possible.

In addition, Tennis Europe’s Annual General Meeting, which was due to be held in Crete in March and features the Presidential and Board elections for the period 20202023, will now be held later this year (see Page 9).

In cooperation with the Greek authorities and the Hellenic Tennis Federation, the Meeting has been rescheduled for October 22-24 at the same venue.

Tennis Europe’s President Vladimir Dmitriev, the Board of Management and current committee members have all

indicated their willingness to remain in their current roles until new elections can be held.

Mr. Dmitriev said, “These are unprecedented times and I would like to praise the tennis family for its unified and coordinated response. It goes without saying that the most important factor in making any decision about the resumption of our events will always be the safety of our players, their companions and the tournament organisers and staff.

We will continue to align with the ITF and to monitor the situation extremely closely across the region with the aim of returning to normality just as soon as if safe to do so.”

Tennis Europe remains open for business as usual, with staff currently working from home offices. Further updates will be made at the Tennis Europe website as the situation continues to develop.

Notes from Tennis Europe The March-May training periods scheduled for the Tennis Europe Academy in Prostejov (CZE) have been postponed due to the current global health emergency. New dates will be confirmed when possible. National associations are encouraged to contact Maciej Szymonski to secure spots at upcoming training camps.

Four European players have been selected to benefit from the ITF Junior Player Grants Programme and will receive up to $25,000 in additional funding towards their competition-related costs, with the aim of helping them to develop as tennis players. The 2020 recipients are Holger Rune (DEN), Clara Tauson (DEN), Karlis Ozolins (LAT) and Daria Snigur (UKR).

Tennis Europe Junior Tour celebrates 30 Years The Tennis Europe Junior Tour is a circuit of high-profile junior tennis events for boys and girls aged 12, 14 and 16 & Under from all over the world and is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2020.

Founded by the European Tennis Federation in 1990, the Tour has grown from 40 tournaments in its first year to 408 in 2019. These include some of the sport’s most prestigious junior tennis events such as Les Petits As, Avvenire and the Tour’s most coveted prize, the European Junior Championships.

Today, 20,000 registered players from 120 countries around the world are eligible to play on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour, which features individual tournaments as well as team competitions, the European Championships and an elite season-ending Masters.

Participants are rewarded with prestigious Tennis Europe Junior Ranking points, updated weekly for the 14 and 16 & Under age groups.

Currently 48 of the 50 European nations host one or more Tennis Europe Junior Tour tournaments each year – this growing number is a symbol of the strength and success of the Tour.

Led by former European champion Stefanos Tsitsipas, many of the Tour’s most notable players of past and present have contributed messages of support and shared some of their favourite memories for social media content due to be published throughout the season.

Tennis Europe tournaments are an essential step on the ladder to a professional tennis career. Over the past three decades, almost all top tennis stars have started their careers at these events. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Martina Hingis, Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki are just a few of the world #1s to have competed on the Tour.

Monte-Carlo to host Tennis Europe Junior Masters The Principality of Monaco will become the new home of the Tennis Europe Junior Masters in 2020.

The Masters is the elite season-ending event for the Tennis Europe Junior Tour’s Top 8 boys and girls aged 14 and 16 & Under.

Former champions include players such as Rafael Nadal, Kim Clijsters, Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic.

The relocation to Monaco is one of a series of upgrades planned for the Tour’s finale. The ‘Race to Monte-Carlo’ rankings will be featured across the Tour’s social media channels throughout the year, keeping players and fans updated on the race to qualify.

Monte-Carlo to host Tennis Europe Junior Masters Baroness Elizabeth-Ann de Massy, President of the Monegasque Tennis Federation, the Monte-Carlo Country Club and the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, commented, “It is with great pleasure that I look forward to hosting the Tennis Europe Junior Masters on our courts. This is also an occasion to look back on our long history...at the beginning of our tournament, in 1897, we also had a women’s event and in 1929 a 23 & Under draw was added, followed by the creation, in 1954, of a competition for juniors aged 17 and 18. I sincerely hope the Tennis Europe Junior Masters will have as much success as its prestigious predecessors had.”

ATP & Tennis Europe join forces for Junior School The ATP and the European Tennis Federation have announced plans to collaborate on the Tennis Europe Junior School, the pioneering educational program designed to prepare young athletes aged 13-16 for life as professional tennis players.

The School content is available online for all players. Interactive live classes will also be held at 10 of the biggest European junior tournaments in 2020, where boys and girls can learn about topics including:

• Anti-Doping • Safeguarding • Nutrition and Hydration • Agents and Sponsorship • Media and Social Media

By supporting the project, the ATP can now contribute to the selection and creation of content tailored specifically for young male players, send experts to Junior School classes, and advise on a wide range of topics in the Junior School curriculum.

Ross Hutchins, ATP Chief Player Officer, said: “Expanding our player education programmes and reaching the world’s best players at a young age is a key priority for the ATP. We look forward to working with the Tennis Europe Junior School with the objective of ensuring that emerging

talents are as well-equipped as possible to deal with the future demands of life on the professional Tour.”

Tennis Europe CEO Thomas Hammerl initiated the project in 2018 and commented, “We are delighted to have the collaboration of the ATP for this project, which means we are now working with both professional tours, the ATP and WTA. Education is a vital part of our strategy and with this agreement we ensure that players receive consistent and correct information on important topics for their professional careers. The feedback from players, parents, coaches and federations has been fantastic and motivates us to continue to invest in this area.”

The Tennis Europe Junior Tour consists of more than 400 tournaments held in 48 European nations for the 12, 14 and 16 & Under age groups, and celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2020. Over 20,000 registered players are eligible to compete on the Tour, with the top 8 qualifying for the season-ending highlight, the Junior Masters in Monte-Carlo.

The Junior School adds an educational aspect to the formative on-court experiences provided by the Tour.

ITF/Tennis Europe 14 & Under Development Championships The 2020 Development Championships were hosted by the Turkish Tennis Federation in Antalya during the first two weeks of March. 14 & Under players from 11 of Europe’s emerging tennis nations (Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Turkey) were given high level international playing opportunities in two back-to-back Category 2 Tennis Europe Junior Tour events, plus the chance to earn spots on the ITF/Tennis Europe Touring Teams later this year.

The Championships were the focal point of a busy fortnight.

The ITF and Tennis Europe paid travel and accommodation expenses for almost 100 participants, who took part in a range of development activities.

Also taking place were a 12 & Under Training Camp, followed by a 12 & Under tournament and an ITF Tutors’ Workshop.

In addition, the third class of the Tennis Europe Junior School of 2020 was held on the Sunday of the first week, hosted by Tennis Europe CEO Thomas Hammerl. Tennis Europe’s primary off-court initiative for the Tour’s players, the Junior School aims to prepare young athletes for their future professional careers.

WEEK 1 Marko Maksimovic (BIH) was the boys’ champion. He took out top seed Ilie Cazac of Moldova in the semi-finals, before eventually overcoming his compatriot Fatih Sisic in a monumental struggle in the final. The pair battled it out over three arduous sets, with the seventh seed prevailing 7-6(1) 6-7(1) 6-4. In the girls’ draw, Rositsa Dencheva took the title by defeating fellow Bulgarian Yoana Konstantinova 6-4 6-2 in the final.

Honours in the boys’ doubles went to Amar Huseinovikj & Filip Stojanovski of North Macedonia, who got over the line ahead of Maksimovic & Sisic 7-6(4) 5-7 10-6. Dencheva & Konstantinova teamed up to win the girls’ trophy, de-

feating Anastasija Ignjatic & Asja Salkanovic of Bosnia & Herzegovina 6-0 6-1 in their final.

WEEK 2 There was no let up in the form of the top players during the second event. Maksimovic cruised past Filip Stojanovski and Haydar Cem Gokpinar (TUR) in his first two matches, before seeing off Montenegro’s Balsa Djokovic in the semifinals to set up a re-match with Cazac in the boys’ final.

The same went for the girls’ finalists, as Dencheva and Konstantinova were set to repeat their week 1 final. In an unfortunate turn of events, neither final could be played as both matches were cancelled as the current Coronavirus health restrictions were brought into place.

The doubles finals were played the previous day. Maksimovic & Sisic made amends for their week 1 final loss. In a rematch against their North Macedonian opponents, they eventually got revenge with a 6-2 4-6 10-5 victory.

Dencheva & Konstantinova completed a double win, nabbing the trophy with a 6-2 6-2 performance against Anghelina Mocanu & Eva Zabolotnaia of Moldova.

This gives the Bulgarians the distinction of being the doubles winners as well as singles finalists in both weeks. Similarly, Maksimovic holds the honour of being the only boy to reach all four finals - singles and doubles - in both weeks.

First played in 1996, the Development Championships have given many of today’s top players an early chance to train and compete in high-level international events.

Previous participants include the likes Grigor Dimitrov, Marcos Baghdatis, Simona Halep, Jelena Ostapenko and Victoria Azarenka.

La Manga Club hosts Fed Cup tie The Fed Cup returned to La Manga Club in February, where Spain scored an impressive win over Japan to qualify for the final rounds of the competition.

The opening day saw a huge surprise as 2012 Junior Masters champion Sara Sorribes Tormo scored the biggest win of her career to shock 2-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, who hit 50 unforced errors and won just three games.

Playing her last ever Fed Cup tie on home soil, Carla Suarez Navarro followed up to beat Misaki Doi in straight sets to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. On Day 2 Suarez Navarro had the honour of sealing the victory, taking just 75 minutes to beat Kurumi Nara and give Spain an unassailable 3/0 lead.

Spain’s last victory in the competition came in 1998, when the team was led by Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, who was amongst the boisterous home crowd on the famous centre court of La Manga Club’s tennis centre. Current captain Anabel Media Garrigues stated that team aims

to give Suarez Navarro the best possible send-off to her professional career by winning a sixth Fed Cup title.

12 teams have now qualified for the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas finals, which were due to be held in Budapest this month but have been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

La Manga Club is set to host more international tennis later this year, when the European Senior Club Championships returns to the award-winning resort for a seventh time.

Tennis Europe confirms nominations for forthcoming elections Tennis Europe has announced the nominations for the forthcoming Presidential and Board of Management elections, due to take place at the Annual General Meeting in Crete, Greece. As a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Meeting has been rescheduled and will now be held from 22nd – 24th October 2020.

The President and the 8 other members of the Board of Management will be elected for a three-year term, from 2020 - 2023. A record 48 of Tennis Europe’s 50 member nations are due to attend the meeting.

Tennis Europe President Vladimir Dmitriev to step down Incumbent President Vladimir Dmitriev has announced his withdrawal from Tennis Europe’s forthcoming elections. Having served in the role since March 2017, Mr. Dmitriev took the decision to step down due to increased personal and professional commitments.

Mr. Dmitriev stated, “I have taken this decision as I realise that I would no longer be able to fully meet the obligations faced by the President in the next term. I leave Tennis Europe with a sense of satisfaction, because I know that we have done a lot over the past three years to set our Federation on a more powerful and dynamic course, one that cannot be reversed.”

Success for new President’s Fund Launched in November 2019, Tennis Europe’s ‘President’s Fund’ has already allocated direct assistance to 29 European national tennis federations. In total, over €125,000 has been distributed to nations, providing immediate relief for their federations.

A wide range of projects have been supported, ranging from the organisation of training camps and national touring teams to purchases of tennis and office equipment.

With one eye on the road to qualification for the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, two nations (Belarus and Hungary) have received funds to assist with the acquisition of new wheelchairs for their players.

The Fund was created by Tennis Europe President Vladimir Dmitriev. Grants are made subject to compliance with certain criteria and complement financial commitments from the recipients.

Mr. Dmitriev commented, “We are delighted by the response to the Fund. That over half of our member nations have been able to benefit in less than three months illustrates that many national associations struggle to find the resources to carry out their daily activities. Tennis Europe is happy to be able to assist with these challenges and will continue to work to improve this situation across the region.”

France wins fourth consecutive European Tennis Trophy Tennis Europe has announced the winners of the European Tennis Trophy, the annual awards devised to recognise the performances of players and teams representing the regional association’s 50 member nations throughout the year.

The winners of the 2019 Trophies are as follows:

• Overall Performance: FRANCE • Professional Tennis: FRANCE • Junior Tennis: RUSSIA • Senior Tennis: GERMANY • Wheelchair Tennis: GREAT BRITAIN

France’s fourth consecutive win for Overall Performance makes the nation the most successful in the history of the competition, with 8 titles since 1991. France also won the Professional Tennis Trophy for a fourth consecutive year, beating Spain into second place.

In the closest of races, Russia re-claimed the Junior Tennis Trophy from runners-up Czech Republic with just 35 points separating the two nations. The win marks a 14th junior tennis win in the last 16 years for Russia.

Acknowledging another victory for his nation, French Tennis Federation President Bernard Giudicelli commented, “It is an extra honour to receive this award from Tennis Europe. It highlights both our willingness to train our young elite internationally and the quality of the work provided by all the educators in clubs, leagues and at the French Tennis Federation. It must also be shared with the families without whom there is no high-level course.”

Tennis Europe President Vladimir Dmitriev congratulated the winners, “Performance is just one of the many ways in which the French Tennis Federation leads our member nations, and I’d like to express my warmest congratulations for this timely win, during the FFT’s centenary year. The European Tennis Trophy is our unique way of recognising the performances of our member nations, and it’s important to remember that behind every individual victory is years of work on the part of players, coaches, parents, federations, volunteers, organisers and officials.”

Other notable performances come from nations as diverse as Andorra, Azerbaijan, Finland, Greece, Israel, Liechtenstein and Norway, all of whom rise five or more places since last year.

The prizes will be presented to the winning national federations at a ceremony held during Tennis Europe’s Annual General Meeting in Crete later this year.

Great Britain will celebrate a third Wheelchair Tennis Trophy, after comfortably beating reigning champions Netherlands into second place, and rise from 9th to 6th overall. In the Senior Tennis Trophy, Germany continues to reign supreme, waltzing to the title for a 29th consecutive year ahead of second-placed Austria.

Tennis Europe has also announced that to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the European Tennis Trophy in 2020, a new Beach Tennis Trophy will be added. “The incorporation of Beach Tennis is a great recognition of the growth of the sport, which now has over 300 events in 37 countries. Coupled with the digitalisation of the Tour and implementation of new ‘Wave Series’ and junior circuits in 2020, Beach Tennis has an exciting year ahead,” said Aleksei Selivanenko, Chairman of the ITF Beach Tennis Committee.

Great Britain & Italy score first ever 12&U Winter Cups wins The British girls and the Italian boys teams have scored their first ever wins in the nine-year history of the tournament’s 12 & Under event. Both teams have come close on two previous occasions; the girls were pipped at the post in 2015 and 2018, while the boys had to make do with the silver medals in 2018 and 2019. The breakthrough wins end Russia and Czech Republic’s recent dominance of the 12 & under event, with the two nations sharing the trophies over the past four years.

Hannah Klugman then came out to consolidate that win with a 6-4 6-1 dismissal of Daria Koreshkova, thus confirming a British victory for the first time ever in this event. Despite having been picked for earlier doubles rubbers, Sophie Bekker did not play on this occasion. Nevertheless, the Brits made it a clean sweep, with Klugson & Widdowman’s 7-5 6-4 win over Koreshkova & Marta Mariia Makarova shutting out the defending champions for a 3-0 triumph.

British Breakthrough

The win was particularly significant for Britain, as it marks a first ever girls’ title in the Winter Cups for Team GB across all age categories. The British boys won the 12 & Under event in 2013, and have a handful of titles in the other age categories.

ROAD TO THE FINALS The girls from Great Britain came into the finals with an impressive 3-0 win over hosts France in the first tie in Feucherolles in Group C qualifying. They backed this up with another dominant performance, this time over Hungary. In the qualifying final they went down 1-2 to Poland, but this was enough to book them a spot in the finals on home soil in Sunderland, where the final rounds have been held since 2015.

The first tie of the final rounds was against the Czech Republic. After a shaky start, the home team came back from a 0-1 deficit to take the doubles and move on to the semi-finals. There, Great Britain defeated Belarus to set up a clash against the defending champions, Russia.

BOYS: Veska, Czech Republic Starting the final with the 0-1 deficit was not ideal for the Italians as Vito Antonio Darderi went down to Ziga Sesko.

Then, Noah Canonico got the tie back on track with his own straight sets win over Luka Petrovic. It all came down to the deciding doubles rubber where Rafael Ciurnelli & Darderi scored a 6-2 6-0 win over Sesko & Svit Zuljic to confirm an Italian victory. The win was extra sweet for the Italians, who made it third time lucky in the final, clinching the gold medals after runner-up spots in the last two editions.

At the final rounds in Veska, Czech Republic, they got their campaign off and running with a 2-1 win over Bulgaria. In the semi-finals they saw off the Netherlands by the same score to progress to the final where they would meet firsttime 12 & Under finalists Slovenia.

THE FINALS

GIRLS: Sunderland, Great Britain The Russians have been a dominating force in this event, having won two of the last three titles in this age group.

The Brits were not daunted, however, and playing in front of a supportive local crowd certainly helped fire them up. In the first rubber, Amalia Widdowson, after a tough start, got a 7-6(4) 6-3 win over Polina Vimba.

Final Standings

The Italian boys also played in Group C qualifying, this time in Tallinn, Estonia. They won their opening ties against Ukraine and Slovakia by the same 3-0 score line. In the qualifying final, they beat France in a nail-biting 10-6 championship tiebreak win in the deciding doubles rubber to finish on top of the group.

Czech Republic & Romania claim 14&U Winter Cups titles Romania has claimed a maiden 14 & Under Winter Cups title, downing first-time finalists Poland in the title showdown. Improving on last year’s runner-up spot, the Romanians carved their way through the field on the way to the boys’ title. There’s great news too for the Czech Republic, as the girls’ team won on home soil, taking a second title in three years and re-claiming the trophy from last year’s winners Russia in the final.

Czech Republic claimed the bronze medals, with a 2-0 win over Germany.

Girls 14 & Under Finals, Rakovnik (CZE) Czech Republic d Russia 2-1 They say that revenge is a dish best served cold but as the two teams met on the final day for a second successive year it was the Russian team that caught their hosts cold in the opener, as Mirra Andreeva raced to a 6-4 6-1 win over Lucie Urbanova. The second match saw a tough three set battle, with Sara Bejlek eventually levelling the tie, overcoming Alina Korneeva in a gruelling 3-6 6-3 6-3 comeback win.

For the deciding doubles all four players returned to court.

In a straightforward match, the Czech Republic was too strong, claiming a 6-1 6-4 win to wrest the title from Russia and avenge last year’s loss.

Great Britain won the bronze medals, beating Poland 2-0.

ROAD TO THE FINALS Romania’s Gabriel Ghetu did not play in the finals but did participate in Zone C qualifying for Romania and was part of the winning doubles team in their first round qualifying win against Hungary. The Romanians then went on with 2-1 wins over Turkey and Italy to qualify first in their group for the finals. They kept up the trend of winning by a 2-1 scoreline in matches over Switzerland and Germany in the final rounds, before facing Poland in the grand final.

Boys 14 & Under Finals, Veska (CZE) Romania d Poland 2-0 In the boys’ final, Calin Teodor Stirbu outplayed Mikolaj Migdalski to put Romania ahead with a 6-3 6-2 win. Luca Preda then secured Romania’s first ever 14&U Winter Cups win after a hard-fought 7-5 7-5 win over Tomasz Berkieta. The doubles match was left unplayed, a 2-0 lead being enough to seal the deal and close out a historical moment for the Romanian team.

Final Standings

In qualifying the Czech girls started off in very convincing fashion, shutting out Moldova 3-0 and then followed that up by defeating Israel by the same margin. They topped the qualifying group after a 2-1 win against Germany.

In the finals, the Czechs started in scintillating fashion, dismissing both France and Poland without the loss of rubber, a sure indication that they would be tough to beat in the final.

Russia and Czech Republic dominate 16 & Winter Cups finals Czech Republic has claimed a first 16 & Under Boys’ Winter Cups by HEAD trophy in Ronchin, France. Having reached the final on five occasions, the Czechs join Russia as the only nation to have won all six possible Winter Cups titles.* Meanwhile, Russia’s girls’ team won a third consecutive 16 & Under title. The team continues to dominate this event, having now played nine of the last ten finals. In the deciding match they conquered the Netherlands, who were playing in the final for the first time since their most recent victory in 1991.

French boys, they were able to come away with a victory, with Koevermans & Florentine Dekkers beating Schnaider & Elena Pridankina 7-6(4) 3-6 10-4.

Boys 16 & Under Finals, Ronchin (FRA) Czech Republic d France 3-0 Jakub Nicod got the ball rolling for the Czechs, posting a 6-2 6-4 win over 2018 Kremlin Cup Junior champ Luca Van Assche in the opening rubber. Matthew William Donald then kept the momentum going for the visitors, edging past Sean Cuenin in a tight 7-5 7-6(6) win. Playing on home soil, the local team did try to salvage some pride in the doubles, however it was not to be. It was the Czech Republic’s moment in the sun as they hammered home a 3-0 win with another straight sets victory. Last year’s 14 & Under European Junior Champion and Tennis Europe Junior Tour Player of the Year, Vojtech Petr, teamed with Nicod to outdo Van Assche & Antoine Ghibaudo 6-3 6-4.

ROAD TO THE FINALS In what was a truly impressive display of team tennis, the Czech boys were extremely dominant in their performances throughout the entire competition. At the qualifying rounds they defeated both Montenegro and Poland 3-0 and lost just one rubber to Russia in the qualifying final. Prior to defeating France in the final, the Czechs also defeated Italy and Bulgaria by the same 3-0 score line.

Russia’s route to the girls’ final was slightly more arduous.

In the qualifying rounds they began strongly with a 3-0 win over Estonia. This was backed up by a 2-1 win over Great Britain where they lost the dead rubber. They did have to hustle after losing the second match to Belarus in the qualifying final, but victory in the doubles sealed Russia’s positions as the top seeds for the final rounds. Their first match in Brest against hosts France was a battle, with the favourites surviving a tight championship tiebreak in the deciding doubles. To qualify for the final, Russia eased past eventual bronze medalists Germany 3-0 in the semis.

Girls 16 & Under Finals, Brest (FRA) Russia d Netherlands 2-1 Erika Andreeva and Diana Shnaider got the Russians off to an unassailable lead, both posting straight sets victories in their singles rubbers. They defeated Anouk Koevermans and Sophie Schouten 6-4 6-4 and 6-1 6-3 respectively to end the Dutch team’s hopes of a first win in almost three decades. Also playing for pride, the girls from Holland fought it out in the doubles, taking it to a decider. Unlike the

ITF Academy educational resources made available for free

To assist the 164,000 tennis coaches globally during this time of uncertainty, the ITF is making more resources on its ITF Academy platform available for free for the duration of this period of imposed shutdown.

ITF Academy features a wealth of resources that will not only benefit coaches, but also parents, teachers and anyone who wants to improve their own game. More than 340 theory-led content pieces, including videos, articles and scientific research papers, are available for free on the ITF’s educational platform, enabling users to make tangible progress in their personal and professional development from home.

Interactive online courses have recently been added to the platform for the first time, with 18 courses currently available in English and a further 6 in Spanish and 6 in French. The courses cover a variety of subjects, from an ‘Introduction to Strategy & Tactics’ to ‘Ethics in Coaching’.

New courses will be added each week, with ‘Goal setting’, ‘Tennis Parents’ and ‘Teaching Methodology’ among the upcoming topics to be covered.

In addition to the courses and resources available on ITF Academy, the ITF are also making their bestselling ebook ‘Advanced Coaches Manual’ available for free to all during this period (previously £14.99). Accessible via the ITF ebooks app, the manual has been published in 13 languages and contains comprehensive scientific and practical information on all elements of the game for coaches working with players of all ages and abilities. The

ITF ebooks app is an invaluable source of information in its own right, with more than 150 publications currently live – many of which are free to access.

Whether for an established coach, a newcomer, or just someone interested in better understanding the theoretical side of the sport, the ITF Academy is an essential tool for continued professional development.

ITF President David Haggerty said, “Everybody around the world is trying to continue with their lives as best as they can in the face of this enormous global challenge.

While sport is rightly not the main priority at the moment, people still rely on it for their livelihoods. By making these resources available for free, I hope as many people as possible will benefit in some way and use this time to continue to develop themselves.”

The recent draw saw the 18 teams divided into six round robin groups for the early stages, as follows: Group A: Spain, France, Ecuador. Group B: Canada, Kazakhstan, Sweden. Group C: France, Great Britain, Czech Republic.

Group D: Croatia, Australia, Hungary. Group E: USA, Italy, Colombia. Group F: Serbia, Germany, Austria.

A further 21 nations are set to play World Group home and away ties in September. In World Group I, top seeds Belgium travel to Bolivia, Belarus travels to Argentina, Bosnia & Herzegovina travels to Peru, Netherlands travels to Uruguay, Slovakia hosts Chile, Finland hosts India, Norway hosts Uzbekistan, and in two all-European ties Romania hosts Portugal while Ukraine hosts Israel.

There are several all-European encounters in World Group II, where Switzerland hosts Estonia, Greece hosts Lithuania and Turkey hosts Latvia. Additionally, Bulgaria will travel to Mexico while Denmark hosts Thailand, Poland hosts El Salvador and Slovenia hosts Paraguay.

The WTA announced on International Women’s Day that it has teamed up with Florida-based fashion designers Lilly Pulitzer. The deal will also see Lilly Pulitzer collaborate with WTA Charities, for whom they will contribute to a number of campaigns in 2020.

The Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle, Germany, is to be renamed the OWL Arena, as part of an extensive sponsorship realignment.

The French Tennis Federation has deepened its ties with partner Lacoste. The new six-year agreement runs to 2025 and will see the brand provide official tracksuits to the French men’s and women’s teams for the Davis Cup and Fed Cup, and for its junior and paratennis teams. A co-branded licence will also be launched, with new products due to be available from 2021.

OFFICIATING Prior to the COVID-19 tournament suspensions, both the ATP and WTA revealed plans to test electronic line-calling systems during clay court events in 2020.

The WTA is to test allowing coaching from the stands at non-Grand Slam tournaments, permitting limited verbal and non-verbal communication between players and coaches during matches.

PLAYERS Former Wimbledon semi-finalist Tzvetana Pironkova has announced a return to professional tennis.

Ana Konjuh has also announced plans to return following elbow surgery.

SPONSORSHIP The ATP has extended its sponsorship with FedEx. The logistics company will sponsor 13 tournaments each season, and will become the presenting sponsor of the ATP world #1 trophy, presented annually at the ATP World Tour Finals.
