2014 Sumner County Football Preview

Leaders of the pigskin packs The most successful of Sumner County’s high-school football programs have always had one thing in common during their respective elite runs, stability within their coaching staffs. It was never more evidenced than last season when Hendersonville made an appearance in the state championship game in its first season as a Class 6A program. Unlike others, the Commandos didn’t have that one standout that carried them through their five-game, postseason run. Instead, Hendersonville’s coaching staff effectively convinced its players to buy into the “team concept, taking a businesslike approach into each game as they continually improved and proved to be an example of the whole being greater than the sum of its individual parts.

The leader of that program – Bruce Hatfield – is back for his 17th season at the helm, hoping to lead the Commandos to their fifth state championship game in his tenure there. Hatfield is one of the four Sumner County head coaches who have spent at least 10 seasons at their respective programs. Jeff Porter begins his 28th season at the helm of the White House program, which has advanced to four consecutive Class 4A quarterfinals. Station Camp’s Shaun Hollinsworth won the District 9-AAA championship last season, in his 11th season at the helm. Beech 10th-year head coach Anthony Crabtree won two Class 5A state titles over his first eight seasons there. Though Sumner County has

CRAIG HARRIS had its share of talented players – as evidenced by last season’s plethora of talent, including University of Tennessee signees Jalen Hurd (Beech) and Josh Malone (Station Camp) – the area’s success has been due in large part to those coaches getting the most of out of their personnel, not just in the seasons of their greatest success but often times in seasons that they achieved more than was ever thought possible.

Seven of Sumner County’s eight teams reached the postseason a year ago. Three county teams (Hendersonville, Gallatin and White House) reached the quarterfinal round of the playoffs last season, and two more (Station Camp and Westmoreland) advanced to the second round. A year ago, the surprise team was obviously Hendersonville. Who will it be this season? Who knows ‌ but we have once again attempted to compile as comprehensive of a preseason preview on each of Sumner County’s Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association (TSSAA) football programs as possible to help us all get a glimpse as to who the next Cinderella might be. Once again, our Sumner County Football Preview is packed with team previews,

action photos, rosters, coaching biographies, schedules, past results and players to watch for the upcoming campaign. Thanks to the efforts of sports writer Chris Brooks, photographers Rick Murray and Phil Stauder, designer Andy Harper, and our advertising and production staffs, we have attempted to give the fans of this area’s traditionrich programs the comprehensive coverage they have come to expect. The players in those programs expect to win. You – the fans – expect those wins. We hope this 2014 Sumner County Football Preview is a winner in your eyes too, serving an invaluable resource in what becomes a memorable season for all involved.

BUCCANEERS HOPE TO REGAIN PAST FORM Beech looks to bounce back after first-round, playoff exit By Chris Brooks Sumner County Publications

At the beginning of last season, big expectations were placed on the Beech High football team. This time, after a 6-5 season and a first-round loss in the Class 5A playoffs, the Buccaneers want to rejoin the discussion for the District 9-AAA title. However, they’ll have to do it with new leading players. Graduation hit the Bucs hard, removing the likes of Jalen Hurd, Dorian Carter and Parker

Henry from the roster. Now, it’s time for younger players to step up and find their place according to head coach Anthony Crabtree. “We’ve got kids who are going to get a chance to prove themselves,” Crabtree said. “It’s their time now.” That time begins with the backfield contingent, which will likely boast a trio of featured ballcarriers. The days of one running back getting 40-plus carries in a game are gone, if Crabtree sticks to his plan. “It’ll still be real similar, but instead of one

guy getting 35, 40 or even 50 carries a game like Dorian Carter got in one game, hopefully it can be 10-12 carries a piece for each guy,” Crabtree said. “We want to distribute it more evenly, and that’s one thing we have to more conscious of.” That’s because each of the three in the mix to start – senior Donnell Hathaway, junior Auston Vanzant and sophomore Rodrick Napper (who transferred from Ripley High in the spring) – will all see time at tailback in the Bucs’ I-formation. “We need to give all three of them time and

split up their carries more,” Crabtree said. “If they all start on defense, we’ve got to do a better job of rotating them at tailback on offense.” Hathaway and Napper will start at the cornerback spots on defense, meaning their carries may have to be managed to limit fatigue. The same could also be true for Vanzant, who is in the mix at safety. Napper could be the type of cornerback the Bucs need. “Recievers and quarterbacks are going to have to know where he is, because he doesn’t mind hitting you,” Crabtree

Crabtree is looking for someone to emerge at those safety spots. “Losing the quarterback of our defense from last year, Parker Henry, hurts us,” Crabtree said. “We’re trying to find somebody who can be the quarterback of our defense.” Henry was also the starting quarterback on offense. Clear-cut starters at quarterback have been the norm, not the exception, during the past few seasons. This year, finding a starting signalcaller has been a tougher task. “There’s a possibility that we can go with a two-quarterback system,” Crabtree said. “We’ll have to see how it develops going forward.” Parker Henry’s replacement could be either Hafner or senior Nathaniel Brown, but a starter has not been named. “There’s not a huge separation between the two quarterbacks,” Crabtree said. “Hopefully, we’ll get a little bit clearer vision of one of them

starting or what packages each quarterback will be in.” In the wide-receiver department, seniors Justis Marlin, Brady Ballinger, Ryan Edwards and junior Jacob Jenkins will be called upon to catch passes from those quarterbacks when needed. Crabtree expects his team to be an opportunistic one. “I think our team is going to be an aggressive team,” Crabtree said. “If we keep sticking our nose in there, we have to be disciplined. We also have to take advantage of our opportunities.” They also can’t give opponents big opportunities, either. “We can’t make mistakes like putting the ball on the ground and expect to win,” Crabtree said. “I think we’ve found some weaknesses in our team that we thought might be weaknesses. We were reassured that they were in scrimmages, so we have to go to work and see if we can get better.” The offensive line is

expected to be one of the most experienced units. Six seniors – Zeb Harris, Neal Cox, Riley Lovingood, Kevin Head, Dalton Burroughs, Aaron Pecenka – and junior Jowan Garrett are in the rotation for those spots. “The majority of those guys started and played 11 games last year,” Crabtree said. “They know what will be expected of them.” That rotation will be important to manage each player’s snap count as the majority of those linemen will play on defense as well. “A lot of those guys are playing offense as well,” Crabtree said. “We’ll try to rotate them depending on how many combined plays they’ve been in the game and make sure we have some energy left (late in the game).”

Several players will see time in the Bucs’ 3-4 defense, with seniors Max Rodgers, Sam Lindsey, Caleb Dockery and Noah Hamilton, along with junior Isaac Hambrick, contending for playing time along the three-man front. Dockery will also see time on offense at tight end, along with sophomore Jacob Phillips. Another potential tightend candidate is senior Parker Campbell, who for the last two seasons has been the lead blocker for Hurd and Carter as the team’s starting fullback. He’ll be in that role again this year, but his flexibility lends itself well to Crabtree’s system. Campbell will also have a key role as a starting outside linebacker.

He knows that people are looking at him to step up and make plays.” Senior Dillon Norton will line up at the other outside linebacker position, while seniors Pecenka and Nick Fechino will handle duties in the two middle linebacker spots. Senior Carson Garrett will handle placekicking duties for the second straight season. “After a year in the weight room and season kicking a football, he’s

That’s what we’re hoping happens

this year.” Senior Damon Wilson will handle punt returns, while Hathaway, Napper and Vanzant are expected to share kickoff return duties. After the disappointment of last year’s finish, the Bucs will try to rebound beginning on Friday, when nearby rival Station Camp visits Shackle Island Stadium for the two District 9AAA squads’ season opener.

SUMNER COUNTY HEAD COACHES Anthony Crabtree, Beech (10th season) The Buccaneers finished 6-5 last season, falling in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. Crabtree’s program has reached the playoffs eight times in his nine seasons at Beech, producing an 80-30 record over that time frame. Beech also won the 6-4A championship in 2005, Crabtree’s first season at Beech. Crabtree took over at the helm of a program that finished 1-9 in 2004 (its second consecutive losing season). Crabtree served as the defensive coordinator at Creek Wood before arriving at Beech, helping that program to its most successful season (a 5-5 record) in its first three years of existence. Crabtree was at Creek Wood for three years, after having been at Dickson County for three years. Prior to that, he was at Hickman County for three years (1996-98), serving as offensive coordinator in his final year there.

Mark Williams, Gallatin (third season) Williams led the Green Wave to its most successful postseason since 2009 last fall. HOPING FOR A CONTINUED WAVE OF PROGRESS Gallatin looks to build on last season’s postseason success By Craig Harris Sumner County Publications

CRAIG HARRIS/SUMNER COUNTY PUBLICATIONS

The Gallatin High School offense averaged better than 30 points per game last season, when the Green Wave won eight games and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Class 5A playoffs.

The Gallatin High School football program has experienced greater success than it did a year ago. However, the 2013 campaign was certainly a step in a familiar direction. From 2006-12, the Green Wave won a total of three postseason contests. Gallatin won two last November en route to the Class 5A quarterfinals. “It was a big step for our program,” Green Wave head coach Mark Williams said. “We talk

about moving forward and getting to where we want to be, having our goals. We talk about setting our goals and reaching those goals. Last year, we got to the quarterfinals. It was the first home quarterfinal game we’ve had in a long time here (since defeating Christian Brothers en route to winning the Class AAA state championship in 1992). We wanted to win that game and move on to the semis. “It’s a tough district we’re in. We focus on one week at a time. We felt like we took a step in the right direction. This year, we want to build on that.”

The impact of last season spilled over into the offseason. “Our kids know what our expectations are, and our kids know what’s expected of them,” Williams said. “There was a difference in attitude after this past season, in the weight room, in agilities, in summer workouts. It made our kids more hungry to get back in it. It made them understand how hard it is to get there. It made our kids become more humble. They understand nothing is going to be easy.” Williams is entering his third season at the

helm of the program. Gallatin finished 3-7 in 2012. “Mentally, our kids have a better understanding of what their jobs are this year,” Williams said. “They’ve been in this program three years. They know what’s expected of them. We still have a ton of competition at some spots, but we want to see that competition. We think it’s good for us the more competition we have. We’re trying to put our best kids against our best kids. Hopefully, that will bring out the best in us.” Gallatin returns four starters on both offense and defense.

WAVE » FROM 11 Senior Julian Meador is expected to direct the Green Wave’s I-formation offense after missing all of last season due to a broken leg. “He has worked his tail off,” Williams said. “He’s still knocking a little bit of the cobwebs off. “He’s doing a good job of managing the offense. He’s done a good job of distributing the ball in the passing game.” Sophomore Wyatt Hayes will serve as the back-up quarterback. Junior Zackary Storke is the front-runner to start at fullback, though senior Dakota Madden is also in the mix. Gallatin lost 1,100-yard rusher Eric Debow to graduation in addition to quarterback Clay Carnes, who passed for more than 1,800 yards and 12 touchdowns and also rushed for 341 yards and 10 scores. Sophomore Jordan Mason and junior Dorian Banks – a transfer from Sevier County High – are expected to share the tailback responsibilities. “We have two guys splitting time at tailback,” Williams said. “They get moved around a lot. They’re both going to play defense too. As much as we can, we’d like to have those two on the field. “The tailback position is important for us. We’re

a tailback-oriented offense. We want to get those guys the ball. We’re looking for big things out of Jordan Mason, and he has done a good job in the offseason. Dorian had some success last year at tailback at the school he went to last year. Hopefully, he’ll bring some of that success here and continue to improve and get better.” Mason averaged 6.4 yards per carry last season and also had a 97yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Banks helped Sevier County to the Class 6A semifinals before falling to eventual state champion Maryville, leading the team in rushing. He has committed to the University of Tennessee. “He’s done a good job of learning,” Williams said. “We’ve thrown a lot at him. He’s taken it in stride. He’s also starting on defense. He’s done a great job of picking things up.” Seniors Jalen Rogan and Tate Overstreet will be at tight end. Overstreet played offensive tackle a year ago. “(Rogan) comes in with a good attitude and has worked his tail off,” Williams said. “He’s somebody we’ve looked to get the ball to passing wise. “(Overstreet) gives us some experience with the run blocking there. He has grown into a receiving tight end. He’s a very agile kid. We were really impressed with him last year as a tackle. The kid

has a big-time motor. We had a need at tight end and felt like we had some kids coming up who could do the job at tackle. He’s done a good job with it.” Three seniors – Dedarius Redding, Tristan Rogers and Nick Tuck – will be in the mix at wide receiver. Redding was a starter last season, catching a team-high 32 passes for 446 yards and two touchdowns. Tuck and Rogers caught nine and seven passes, respectively. “We’re looking for them to lead out there,” Williams said. “(Redding) had a lot of good grabs. He’s a good route runner. “Nick has a big-time motor.” Seniors Josh Brimm and Zac Case are battling for playing time at center, though Case could also see action at offensive tackle. “We’re kind of pleased that we have those swing guys,” Williams said. “We have a couple of guys who can play either tackle or guard. A lot of them have some type of meaningful playing experience.

“They have to grow and continue to get better. They have to have a workmanlike attitude. It does give you a pretty good feeling to know you have some depth there.” Senior Dominic Austin and junior Parker Durrett – who weighs 385 pounds – are expected to start at guard, and senior Logan Lillard is expected to start at tackle. If Case doesn’t start at the other tackle spot, sophomore Wyatt Tabor – a 315-pounder – could be there. “Our offensive line has done a good job,” Williams said. “They’ve really come along. They’re a close-knit group. We look for them to be the heart and soul of our team. They’ve done a really good job for us.” Rogers returns as the placekicker, having made 33 of 37 point-after touchdown (PAT) kicks last season and a 25-yard field goal. Tuck and sophomore Wyatt Springer are options to serve as the long snapper. Banks, Mason and sophomore Dezmond Chambers

WAVE » FROM 12 could return kickoffs, and Banks, Chambers and Redding are all options to return punts. Redding averaged 9.5 yards per punt return. The Green Wave will transition from a fourman front to a 3-4 configuration this season. Springer and juniors Joe Adams and Eddie Salgado are all options at nose tackle, and Springer, Lillard and sophomore LaMarious Majors could see time at defensive tackle. “We just have to continue to tell ourselves that these are some young guys,” Williams said. “They’re going to make mistakes like anybody. They’ve made some mistakes, but they’ve always corrected a lot of them.” Overstreet is moving from defensive end to

inside linebacker this season, after recording 74 tackles (44 solo) last season. He will be joined at inside linebacker by classmate Zach Wilhite, who compiled 32 tackles (23 solo) a year ago. Madden and junior Carlos Hernandez are also options there. Madden made 26 tackles (23 solo) as a junior and returned a fumble 53 yards. “He’s done a good job of taking on the run, and he has a big-time motor,” Williams said of Overstreet. “Zach played a lot last year. He just has to continue to grow. “We want good competition there. That’s one of the most important spots on our defense.” Rogan will start at outside linebacker, along with either Rogers or Mason. Rogan concluded his junior season with 87 tackles (60 solo), three fumble recoveries and two quarterback sacks. Mason had 29 tackles (20

solo) as a freshman. Banks is expected to start at cornerback, along with either Chambers or Tuck, and seniors Makel Crenshaw and Darrien Gibson should line up at safety. Gibson intercepted two passes in the team’s preseason scrimmage against Shelbyville, and he had had 32 tackles (27 solo) and four pass deflections last season. Redding, junior Christian Campbell and sophomore Kenyon

Vaughn could also see action in the secondary. “Overall, we may be a little more athletic, but that remains to be seen,” Williams said. “We tell our kids all the time that we don’t want to rest on talent and rely on athleticism. We want to rely on hard work and to be physical. “Depth, if we look at our ones on the board, we feel alright about them. We still have some areas where depth is an issue.

We played a lot of kids (in preseason scrimmages). We have to build depth up. We have to have those kids who can come in and give us four or five plays in a series.” Williams’ squad placed fifth in District 9-AAA last season. District foe Hendersonville reached the Class 6A state championship game, one year after fellow 9-AAA opponent Beech won the 5A state title. “We play in a tough district,” Williams said. “A team from our district has been represented in the state championship for several years in a row. We have to worry about ourselves, and we have to get better. It’s tough to nail down a team that’s going to be the top dog in this district. You have so many good coaches, like a Bruce Hatfield, like an Anthony Crabtree … Coach (Sam) Harp at Lebanon has done a good job with that

program, and the list goes on. Beech is a state champion in the past. Hendersonville just went to the state championship last year in 6A. Having a clear-cut, defined champion is tough at this point. Week in and week out, it’s tough. We just want to put ourselves in contention for a district championship. “Our goals are very simple. They’re not extraordinary. We want to get better each week. We want to be better than we were the week before. We tell the kids that if we improve, the wins will come. We don’t talk about state championships. We don’t talk about which round of the playoffs we want to go to. We talk about getting better as a team.” The Green Wave opens the season on Friday with a non-district contest at Springfield. Gallatin’s district opener is one week later, with the Wave hosting Beech.

COMMANDOS LOOK TO PRESS REPEAT Hendersonville hopes to carry last season’s success into the 2014 campaign By Chris Brooks Sumner County Publications

The Hendersonville High football program nearly made it to the top of the Class 6A mountain in its first attempt. However, they were unable to reach the summit as perennial powerhouse Maryville relegated the Commandos to a runner-up finish in last year’s BlueCross Bowl. Now, the Commandos are set on regaining the late-season form that propelled them in their postseason run to Cookeville.

For starters, they’re putting last season’s success in the rear-view mirror. “We haven’t really talked about it, Hendersonville head coach Bruce Hatfield said. “We’ve just been trying to go about our daily business. That group of seniors last year did a tremendous job, but now, we’re solely focused on trying to get better every day and field a competitive team. In doing so, they’ll rely on the same principles that have aided them in the past. The ground

game and defense have always been points of emphasis for Hatfield and his staff, and this year won’t be any different. The Commandos could be considered the favorites to win District 9AAA, but they expect consistency to be key, beginning with practice. “Our practice habits have to be more consistent, Hatfield said. “Our first two scrimmages have been pretty short. We’ve got a lot of areas that need improvement. With five of the eight teams in the district

qualifying for the playoffs last season, Hatfield knows that his players are going to be in for a fight every time out. “Without question, Hatfield said. “Just to compete in this district, it’s going to take an outstanding effort every week, and that’s not just coach-speak. I think everybody’s going to have a very good football team. It’s going to take hard work every day from our players just to be competitive with these district teams.

COMMANDOS » FROM 15 Quarterback Jeremias Elston returns for his senior season. Elston tossed 11 touchdown passes and rushed for eight more last year. However, it’s Elston’s leadership that Hatfield is counting on as his biggest asset. “He should be solid,” Hatfield said. “He should have a good grasp of what we’re trying to accomplish. We expect a lot of leadership from him, and I know he’ll provide that.” In the backfield, a number of players could touch the football, but a group of four – seniors Cameron Turner (976 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns in 2013), Jon Reed (366 yards, 2 TDs) and Jarcques Wordlaw, as well as junior Jack Towe (686 yards, 11 TDs)

16

– could handle the bulk of Hendersonville’s rushing attempts. Hendersonville rushed for 4,121 yards last season and scored 58 touchdowns on the ground. Senior wide receiver Braden Schwerdt (21 catches, 405 yards and 7 TDs) was the only Commando to catch more than one of Elston’s 11 scoring strikes last year. “We’ve got some skill and ability,” Hatfield said. “It’ll take some more time on execution with our running game and our passing game, but they certainly have the ability to force people to defend the entire field.” Seniors Sam Pate and Tyler Cassidy are likely to spend time at tight end. Late fumbles cost the Commandos two games last season, but Hendersonville didn’t have those problems down the

stretch, which helped them blast through to the 6A title game. “Hopefully, they saw all the intangibles that those guys had last year and learned from that,” Hatfield said. “Maybe they can apply that to this year’s team. “We’ve got to be a little bit better with our techniques on both sides of the ball, but the kids have had good attitudes. They’re trying to do what we’re asking them to do.” On the offensive line, seniors Chris Kacprowski, Jordan Campbell, Adam Zecco and Justin Bourk - along with juniors Sam Laws, Alex Tate and Austin Hudson will provide the blocking. COMMANDOS » FROM 16 guys in there with the ability to contribute.” Reed and senior Jacob Throneberry have experience at linebacker in the 50 defense (consisting of five down linemen and two linebackers). Towe has been seeing action at strong safety, with Braden Schwerdt returning at free safety. Wordlaw, Elston and junior Carter Billingsley will all see time at cornerback. On special teams, senior Bryce DeGuira will handle all kicking and punting duties. Hatfield indicated that having an experienced player in those roles is a big plus. Last season, DeGuira made five of 10 field goals, but his longest – a 39-yarder to end the first half of their 6A quarterfinal contest at Independence – may have been his

biggest. He hit 62 of 66 extra-points and averaged 33.3 yards per punt. “He’s been solid, and he’s been coachable,” Hatfield said. “He’s been doing the things we’ve asked him, and he’s been working hard. We expect to have a big year from Bryce.” DeGuira will still have Elston to hold on placekicks, but Jack Towe will be the new snapper on those attempts. “Those things still need time to come together,” Hatfield said. “But having Bryce back, with his experience, will be beneficial.” Last year, Hendersonville did most of its damage in the second quarter of games, outscoring opponents 183-109 during that portion of the game. That kind of effort is what the Commandos hope to get throughout all four quarters this season, and in practice as well. “The things that we’re stressing in practice are

Voted

being consistent from the beginning to the end,” Hatfield said. “They’ll come out having a good focus, but then they’ll tail off. We need to be more consistent with those practice habits.” Though last year’s run produced many memorable moments for the Commandos and their fans, a new challenge awaits Hendersonville as the new season approaches. “With the competition that we have week in and week out, it forces you to just focus on the daily routine,” Hatfield said. Hendersonville made two appearances on television last season – including the state championship game – and will do so again this fall. Friday’s regular-season opener at Wilson Central – which is a District 9-AAA contest – kicks off the WUXP-30 Friday Night Rivals broadcasts, and the Sept. 19 battle with rival Gallatin will also be aired.

PANTHERS SEARCH FOR SUCCESS Portland hopes to rebound under first-year head coach By Craig Harris Sumner County Publications

For the Portland High School football program, there’s nowhere to go but up. First-year head coach Greg Cavanah hopes to be the man to lead the Panthers in that direction. “It is the 100th year for football at Portland High School,” Cavanah said. “I know the community is excited about that. “The thing I get excited about is seeing my players improve every day. I want to see how far we can take that by the end of the season.” Cavanah was a Panther assistant coach last season, after retiring following 27 years as an educator and coach in Kentucky. He was promoted to the program’s head coach after Traye Aric resigned at the conclusion of last year’s winless campaign. Cavanah is the program's fifth head coach over the last 10 seasons. “I’ve been pleased with the progress our kids have made,” Cavanah – who was the head coach at Greenwood

S E E

High School from 2010-12 – said. “At the end of the season, after the banquet, Coach Aric resigned. Coach (Bronson) Bradley and I took over the weight room. The kids have made great strides from that point. “The point you’re looking at now is, are we trying to put in too much, too fast? Are we playing at the speed we need to? Are we going to hit people in the mouth? Those are the things we’re looking at now.” Cavanah has four coaches returning – Fred Combs (who coaches the offensive and defensive line), Tim Hodges (tailbacks and strong safeties), Tyler Harvey (split ends and linebackers) and Joe Stewart (split ends and linebackers). He will be joined by three coaches that Cavanah coached with and against in Kentucky, Jerry Turner (offensive line/defensive line), Mark Nelson (offensive coordinator) and Doug Guelde (quarterbacks/ defensive backs). Nelson was an assistant coach at Portland in the early 1990s and then at Westmoreland before leaving

following the 2000 season to become the head coach at Greenwood High School and then for four seasons at South Warren High through last season. “I’m blessed to have the coaching staff I have,” Cavanah said. “Mr. (David) Woods (the Portland principal) and the administration has been very supportive. They’ve dedicated themselves to making this program better. We want to get back to high standards. “I’ve never seen a staff that loved kids as much as these coaches do. This faculty loves kids here at Portland High School. I’ve always said that good teachers are good football coaches. I think I have that in every one that I have.” The Panthers have transitioned from last season’s single-wing offense to an I-formation attack that will also include some spread-formation sets. Portland scored a total of 60 points last season and averaged 200 yards per game, completing 47 of 96 pass attempts for a total of 483 yards (48 yards per game).

“They’re excited,” Cavanah said. “Things are different. Our blocking techniques are different. Our passing game is a lot more sophisticated than it was. The hardest thing I’m seeing right now is kids understanding that if they play their role and if they guy beside them takes care of their role, we will be successful. We talk about daily, believing in the system and running the system as hard as they can possibly do it. “For me, it’s easy, because I’ve run this offense for 14 years. I’m constantly asking the coaches if we’re doing too much. Mark Nelson ran four running plays last years and eight pass plays and went to the region championship game. We’re going to execute. My teams have been known for being physical, being strong and being relentless, playing you for a full game. That’s what I intend to happen.” Senior Chris Greer appears to be the frontrunner to start at quarterback, though junior Ethan Brummett is in the mix also. “Whichever quarter-

Greer runs the ball well. Brummett runs the ball harder. Both make good decisions. Both are making better decisions as the days go by.” Brummett could factor in at either tailback or wingback. Senior Devontae House and sophomore Emmanuel Johnson are the front-runners to see action at tailback, though junior Kemper Dixon is expected to provide depth there. House rushed for 306 yards and one touchdown last season, and he caught five passes for 116 yards. “Those three are the three vying,” Cavanah said. “House played a lot of quarterback last year. Johnson is shifty. He’ll make you miss. Kemper Dixon is close to the same (40-yard dash) time as House. “We only put in about four plays in the spring and about four pass plays. We were pretty successful with that. I’m a power-run man, but I also love the option game. If you’re going to pack the box on us, we have to be able to throw the football. If we can run the ball, we’re going to run the ball and run the clock, but we’re going to be comfortable throwing the ball.” Seniors Cody Johnson and Malik Maxwell could see action at fullback, as could junior Alaska Campbell. “Either one will knock your head off,” Cavanah said of the two senior options at fullback. “Either one can take the ball on a dive and take it to the house. They’re happy

He needs to make his way to the field.” Senior Drew Douglas – who is 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds – is a returning starter at tight end. “He’s a big guy,” Cavanah said. “He has some potential to play at the next level. He can catch. He can block. He runs well. We’re looking for big things out of him.” Junior Hunter Felts could also see action at tight end. Parker and Shemar Rippy, and sophomore Michael Hussey are all options at wide receiver. Senior tackle Tyler Trammel and junior tackle Charles Ring are expected to anchor the offensive line. Classmate Roy Ray – a transfer from Nashville’s Hunters Lane High School – will start at guard, as will either Andrew Green or Andrew Meadows (both of whom are sophomores). Senior Grayson Shadowens and sophomore Darrius Copeland are vying for time at center. “Both of them played a lot last year, offense and defense,” Cavanah said

of Trammel and Ring. “We will rely on our skill kids to carry our linemen until they get the experience they need. I think we have well above average skill kids. I think we have skill kids who can compete. There’s nothing wrong with our kids’ work ethic. It just depends on what the other teams have against us. “Hunter Felts is a lot better football player than he was a year ago at this time, and Darrius Copeland is going to be a big surprise for a lot of people. If we can stay away from the injury bug, we’ll rely on our skill to allow our lineman (the time to develop in order) to mesh it together.” Senior Mason Denning will handle the placekicking and punting duties once again. Denning made three point-after touchdown (PAT) kicks and one field goal as a junior, and he averaged 31.6 yards per punt. “He’s looked good this summer so far,” Cavanah said. “He would be good from 40 or 45 yards. “The teams we play are very stingy. If you can put the points on the board, it allows you to see what can happen at the end. I think he’ll be a lot more comfortable, his second year in. He seems a lot more relaxed. I’m not scared to call him out there today to attempt a 40-yard field goal.” Sargent is a returning starter as the long snapper, and House, Johnson and Dixon could all return kickoffs and punts. Trammel is the likely starter at one defensive tackle spot in the Panthers’ 4-2-5 defensive alignment, while Copeland and Ring are competing for playing time at the other tackle spot. Douglas and senior Johnny McAllister are the front-runners to start at the defensive end posi-

PANTHERS » FROM 20 tions. Douglas made 27 tackles (16 solo) and had 1.5 quarterback sacks last season. “McAllister has worked his tail off,” Cavanah said. “I’ve seen Johnny mature. I’ve seen his work ethic get better. Of all the kids, I thought he improved the most in the spring lineman wise.” At the strong safety positions, Sargent and Brummett should start, though Ladd and senior Wyatt Bohannon will provide depth there. Brummett made 25 tackles as a sophomore. “They’re in those positions because of speed,” Cavanah said. “My offensive and defensive positions on varsity are predicated by speed. “A lot will be surprised at Brummett’s play. He just has a mind-

set, and he’s gotten so much better at understanding what we’re saying to him. Danny Sargent has made huge strides. Bitty Ladd has made huge strides, just becoming a better football player in a year’s time.” Cody Johnson and Maxwell are returning starters at inside linebacker, and House is a returning starter at free safety. Cody Johnson made 55 tackles (33 solo and four for a loss of yardage) last season, and House compiled 52 tackles (34 solo and four for a loss), one interception and one fumble recovery. Johnson had 24 tackles (15 solo) and two quarterback sacks as a junior. Campbell, Felts and senior Zach Cooper will provided depth at inside linebacker, and Emmanuel Johnson and Greer are options at free safety. Cooper made 47 tackles (29 solo and five for a

That has helped them. “We are more experienced defensively. We’ve tried to devote a little more time offensively. More of our days have been offensive than defensive. Not a lot has changed (defensively).” Dixon – who made 31 tackles last season – could start at one corner-

back, while Richardson and Jesse Walker are batting for the starting assignment at the other cornerback spot. Parker is another option at cornerback. “If a team can’t score, they can’t win,” Cavanah said. “If we are going to devote our best athletes, we’re going to devote them to the defensive side of the ball. “I told them, ‘guys, there’s a gazillion teams that run the 4-2-5 and who run the I (formation) and the spread. They

don’t quite run it the way we do.’ They have to buy into what we’re doing … believe in what we’re coaching you to do and make it a fight to the bitter end. That is the biggest obstacle, the biggest hurdle we have to get over. For this team, it’s going to be every ballgame. I tell them to not go out and wait for something to happen. Don’t wait for something to happen. Cause something to happen. Do what you are coached to do and play as hard as you can. Then, I can live with whatever happens.” The Portland program has won a total of 11 games over the last eight seasons. The Panthers have won just three District 9-AAA games over the last five seasons (since moving up to Class AAA), with two of those wins coming during the 2012 campaign (a 5-6 season in which the program advanced to the Class 5A playoffs, reach-

ing the postseason for the first time since the 2005 season). “I know there’s some great districts in the state of Tennessee, but for Portland High School, I compare it to playing in the state championship game every Friday night,” Cavanah said. “Hendersonville (last season’s Class 6A runnerup) should be the top dog again. He (head coach Bruce Hatfield) returns the most. “These kids don’t come practice to lose. If the ball will kick right for us and good things happen early, I think they’ll fight until the end … because they’re hungry for success.” Portland opens the regular season with a contest at neighboring Westmoreland on Friday, Aug. 22. Then, the Panthers will host rival White House the next week, followed by their District 9-AAA opener at Wilson Central on Sept. 5.

BISON PUTTING 2013’S ENDING BEHIND THEM Preseason injuries have placed Station Camp in recovery mode By Chris Brooks Sumner County Publications

Last season’s ending for the Station Camp High football program was like that of a horror movie. The sudden halt to the Bison’s Class 6A playoff run in the second round (a 29-28, overtime loss to visiting Hendersonville) still resonates in head coach Shaun Hollinsworth’s mind. “It was disappointing knowing that had you won that game,” Hollinsworth said, “you had a really good chance to of making it to the (state) finals. The stars were aligned for us

… I thought we had (Hendersonville quarterback Jeremias Elston, who scored on a two-point conversion to end the game) stopped. It was kind of a shocking split-second. I’ve got certain plays and certain games etched in my memory, and that’s one of them. I still get sick about it.” Instead of Station Camp making the trip to Cookeville, the Bison watched Hendersonville – the same team they defeated two weeks earlier for the District 9-AAA regular-season title – finish runner-up in Class 6A. “We had an awesome

season up until that game,” Hollinsworth said. “For a young program like ours and kids that may not have been in that type of a game, it was a learning process.” That learning process begins anew, with some familiar names in key roles. Perhaps the biggest of them is senior quarterback Kyle Anderton (1,940 passing yards and 23 touchdowns despite missing one game with an injury), and most of his supporting cast returns in the skill positions ... except one major player. Instead, Hollinsworth wants as many reliable targets on the field as possible for Anderton to find in the passing game. Among them are seniors Jace Alford (four TD catches last season), Adam Withrow and Kage Hancock, along with sophomores Tyler Thompson – Anderton’s backup quarterback – and Marcus DeVault. “Tyler Thompson is somebody who will be in

A shoulder ailment has also slashed practice time for senior Tre Malone (633 rushing yards and 10 TD). Malone is still projected as the starter at tailback, though he will share carries with senior Josh Gilley (614 rushing yards, 2 TD) in that role. Hollinsworth is impressed with Gilley’s offseason work and preseason improvement. “Josh Gilley has probably had one of the best

BISON » FROM 24 Tanner Broaddus and junior Ryan Warren have experience, but injuries have limited them in the preseason. Broaddus missed all of last season with a hamstring injury. “You have to develop a continuity among those five guys up front,” Hollinsworth said. “We’ve been mixing it around and trying to find out what works … We’re plugging a leaky dike. We’re plugging one hole, and another one spouts out. If we keep plugging those holes, as some point it’s either going to fill up or more (holes) are going to come out.” Seniors Bubba Neely and Will Womack, along with junior Preston Hall, will be in the mix along the offensive front. “I couldn’t name a starting group,” Hollinsworth said. “After Kesh-

awn and Preston Hall – who have been the two best on film – I really don’t know who we’re going to see (earn starting jobs). We’ve had guys who have had experience, but when they’ve been injured, it’s really been tough. We’ve not had one scrimmage where we’ve had all our guys playing at the same time.” Junior Leeam Fitzgerald is expected to start at fullback. If the Bison can regain their health – something they had an abundance of in 2013 – they should contend in what shapes up to be an ultra-competitive District 9-AAA. “We’ve got to weather this storm and ride it out,” Hollinsworth said. “We have to keep the faith and keep doing what we know is right and keep teaching the techniques. If we can keep our heads about us and not go crazy doing it, we think it can come

together.” The defense features a front-line unit that includes seniors Sevaryus Robb and Michael Neely. Juniors Payton Anderton, Andrew Fullerton, Brien Collins and Zach Shonting could contribute there as well. “Payton has played incredibly (in scrimmages),” Hollinsworth said. “He’s a hard man to block. He and Sevaryus (Robb) have been the

anchors up front. They make our defense better.” Potential cornerbacks include Gilley, Hodges, DeVault, junior Perry Foxx and sophomore Jordan Brown. Withrow, Thompson and seniors Jacob Norman and Nick Downey are expected to fill safety roles throughout the year, along with junior Aracio Porter. The linebacker corps includes Tre Malone,

seniors Kodi Gregory and Griffin Hammond, juniors Chris Dunavin and Fitzgerald, along with sophomore Matt Heatherly. “It’s definitely ahead of the offense,” Hollinsworth said of the defense. “And that’s where I thought we’d be the weakest.” Another area of strength may be on special teams. Senior Bryson Shaw will handle placekicking duties, and classmate Walt Heatherly will punt. “I think we’ve got two great kickers,” Hollinsworth said. “That’s a strength of our team. Bryson Shaw and Walt Heatherly can change field position in our favor. If Walt doesn’t outkick our coverage and we can get down there and make some plays, I think that’ll be a strength for us.” Thompson will handle punt returns, while numerous players could

handle kickoff-return duties. “Tyler Thompson is a solid punt returner for us,” Hollinsworth said. “He’s only a sophomore, but he’s fast and quick. He has great hands and makes great decisions. He’s playing above his years.” Some of the other younger players will need to play above their years as well. “They have a winners’ mentality to win,” Hollinsworth said. “They have the want-to to win, but they have to understand that there’s more than just wanting to win. Everybody wants to win, but not everybody’s willing to pay the ultimate price of what it takes to be a champion.” The Bison will open the season Friday at District 9-AAA rival Beech. WHITE HOUSE

BLUE DEVILS HOPE MULTI-SPORT ATHLETES OVERCOME INEXPERIENCE White House seeks to advance to the quarterfinal round of the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season By Craig Harris Sumner County Publications

The White House High School football team will be inexperienced in numerous spots this fall. However, many of those inexperienced

football players have gained experience in other sports. The Blue Devils are hoping those multi-faceted skill sets turn in to success on the gridiron this fall. “Our school has to

have our athletes playing all sports, White House head coach Jeff Porter said. “If White House High School is going to be able to compete, these athletes have to play more than one sport. “Track history proves

it. If you look at some of our better football teams – 2004 (a Class 4A semifinalist), 2008 (a Class 3A semifinalist), 1997 (3A state champion) – they were multiple-sport athletes. Those kind of kids love competition. The Blue Devils are coming off of a 10-win campaign – the program’s first since 2008 – and a quarterfinal ap-

pearance in the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. White House also won its second consecutive District 9-AA championship. “I hope that their expectation is that they know how difficult this schedule is on the front end, Porter said. “That’s the urgency right now. “We have to be good early in order to have a

chance to compete in this district. White House returns just three starters on offense and four on defense, but the lack of experience isn’t a major concern for Porter, who is entering his 28th season at the helm of the program. “It’s their time to

White House High head coach Jeff Porter has led his program to back-to-back District 9-AA championships and four consecutive Class 4A quarterfinal playoff appearances.

DEVILS » FROM 26 play,” Porter said. “This is their chance. It’s their chance to either grab the reigns or allow somebody else to grab it. “I look across the list (of players), and you see kids who a year ago or 18 months ago (did not play) … and wow, here they are. It’s fun to see … it’s fun to see them work and get the possible reward out of it … that’s what’s fun.” On offense, the Blue Devils return a pair of offensive linemen who started last season – senior tackle Kyle Cantrell and senior guard Tyler Gardner. Junior center Lukas Hodges, junior guard Blaiz Phillips and junior tackle Brennan Harshaw will likely round out the starting offensive line. Sophomore center Levi Sisk, sophomore guard Austin Hoffman, junior guard James Whitby, senior tackle Drezmond English and sophomore tackle Dawson Bumbalough will provide depth on the offensive front.

Whitby started at guard a year ago, but due to his increased defensive responsibilities, he’ll serve in a reserve role offensively this season. “The goal is to have 10 people ready to play,” Porter said. “Last year, we had eight. The question is can we get 10 ready to play. It would be nice to have two platoons as far as the offensive line and defensive line. “We try to play a lot of kids, especially through the first six weeks of the season with it being hot. There’s bodies out there (now). After evaluating these scrimmages, we’ll see. I think we have potential depth. They determine if we do or not.” Junior Logan Trimmer will start at tight end, though junior Jake White and sophomore Danny Stoutt could see action there as well. Junior Steven Rankin will be the quarterback, though sophomore Hunter Brown has been impressive in some of the team’s preseason scrimmages. “We can push it down the field a little bit with him,” Porter said of Rankin. “We want for you to either push it to your own

player or push it incomplete. “I was such a huge fan of (Ryan) Pool (the team’s senior quarterback last season). Pool managed the game. That’s what we’re looking for in our quarterbacks, to do a good job of managing the game and understanding that sometimes a good play is an incomplete pass or a punt. Last year, we were always to the upside of the turnover battle.” Senior Troy Raymond will start at fullback, and junior Austin Grissom will also see action there. Several options are in place at tailback in juniors Josh Flynn, Trey Hyde and Tanner Jordan and in sophomore Ronald Honeycutt. Hyde struggled through injuries last season, but he managed to rush for 196 yards and three touchdowns. “Throwing for us is only successful if our ground game is effective,” Porter said. “In order for us to have any kind of chance, we have to play a lot of people. They’re all pretty downhill. That’s all we ever ask out of them.” Senior Josh Mullins

will start at wide receiver, and seniors Chris Baldwin and Caleb Huffines – along with juniors Brian Mullins, Luke Hopkins, Gavin Herrell and Denis Schaffer – are also expected to see action at

Trimmer just does what he’s asked to do, no matter if it’s on offense or defense. “There are areas we’re ahead in now. Kicking-game wise, we are ahead of where we’ve been in the past. That’s a good thing. It allows us to focus in other areas. We have to stay away from injury. If injury happens, we have to have kids who can step in and play. Adversity is going to hit. We welcome it. Adversity can define you.” Huffines, Hopkins and Brian Mullins could all serve as the long snapper, and the Mullins brothers will return punts. Baldwin and Josh Mullins will return kickoffs. Josh Mullins returned four punts for a 19.3-yard average last season, and he averaged 30 yards over nine kickoff returns, including an 85yard return for a touchdown. “He’s been able to make plays,” Porter said of Josh Mullins. “There’s nothing flamboyant about him, but he’s a very team-oriented person. That’s the best attribute I can give him. I don’t ever remember him having his attitude down. To me, he’s a leader on this foot-

Phillips made 53 tackles last season (seven for a loss), had three quarterback hurries and caused three fumbles, while Cannon had 34 tackles (four for a loss), two quarterback hurries and two caused fumbles. Gallatin has always competed in the state’s largest classification, but the program remained in 5A for the 2009 season, the first year of six classifications in the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association.

field’s 16 years at the helm of the Hendersonville program. One year earlier, the Commandos finished 4-6 last season, dropping its final four games and missing out on a Class 5A playoff berth. Hatfield’s program moved up to 6A for the 2013 HENDERSONVILLE season. Bruce Hatfield Hendersonville posted a 9-5 record in 2011, reaching the state semifinals before suffering a 40-14 loss at Henry County. The program has made six semifinal appearances, five of which have come under Hatfield. Hendersonville placed third in District 9-AAA during the regular season before making the postseason run. The Commandos also reached the state championship game in 2010, suffering a 28-7 loss to Columbia in the Class 5A BlueCross Bowl. Hendersonville reached the playoffs seven times in an eight-year span from 19972003. The Commandos reached the state championship game twice in Hatfield’s first four years at the helm. Hendersonville fell to

Oakland in the 1998 Clinic Bowl and fell to Riverdale in the 2001 Blue Cross Bowl. In 1999, the Commandos finished the regular season 10-0 for the first time in school history. Hatfield has compiled a 126-70 record at Hendersonville.

said. “My biggest concern is us being totally committed to winning the kicking game. We have to win the kicking game every Friday night. If you don’t turn it over and win the kicking game, you’re probably going to have a chance (to win). I just want to see us give ourselves a chance by taking care of the football and not putting ourselves in bad positions. “Defensively, we just have to be able to get out there and get a stop.” Junior Kyle Kraemer – a junior fullback and linebacker – could be a factor, though his eligibility status for this season remains in question after he transferred from Pope John Paul II High. Porter points to Westmoreland – the district runner-up the last two seasons – and rival

Greenbrier as two teams he expects to be near the top of the district standings this season. “Westmoreland is very well-coached every year,” Porter said. “They have kids back. I’ve been a huge fan of their program, the way they play. “Greenbrier, it’s a huge rivalry game as far as the location of these two communities. It’s one of the longest-running rivalries in Middle Tennessee. It’s always a tough environment to go play in, but I think anybody can beat anybody in this district.” White House opens the season with back-toback games against rivals, playing at neighboring Portland on Aug. 29 before opening 9-AA play with the contest at Greenbrier one week later.

Jerry Joslin, Pope John Paul II (third season) Joslin helped the Knights to a 4-7 record last season and a 3-8 mark in his first season at the helm (2012), falling in the opening round of the Division II-Class AA playoffs for the fourth and fifth consecutive seasons. Over the previous five seasons, PJP II had combined for 10 victories. The Knights have struggled since moving up to Division II’s largest classification in 2007, producing a 2-46 mark against conference foes over those seven years (including a losing streak of 36 consecutive games against league foes). Joslin succeeded Jeff Rutledge. Prior to the 2007 season, Division II consisted of three classifications but was then reduced to two classes. In 2006, the Knights produced a third consecutive 7-4 campaign. PJP II reached the playoffs for the fourth

consecutive year that season, but for the third straight year, the Knights fell in their playoff opener to Knoxville Webb. PJP II has never won a playoff game. Joslin compiled a 97-63 record in his 14 seasons at Cookeville High School, leading the Cavaliers to POPE JOHN PAUL II 11 regional/ Jerry Joslin district titles. He has more than 30 years of highschool coaching experience, including a four-year stint as head coach at Gallatin (19931997). The Gallatin graduate was an assistant coach for 10 seasons before becoming head coach, serving as the defensive coordinator when the Green Wave won state titles in 1989 and 1992. Joslin is the third coach in school history, following Jeff Brothers (2002-2009) and Rutledge (2010-2011).

Greg Cavanah, Portland (first season)

Cavanah is entering his first season at the helm of the Panther program, after having served as an assistant coach last season. He coached blocking backs on offense and inside linebackers on defense. Cavanah is the fifth head coach at Portland in 10 seasons. The Panthers were winless last season, their third winless season over the last five years. Portland has produced just 11 victories over the last eight seasons. Cavanah succeeds Traye Aric, who compiled a 5-26 record in three seasons at the helm. However, in the middle of those three campaigns (2012), Portland won five games and reached the playoffs for the first time since the 2005 season. The Panther program fell on hard times after moving up to Class 4A in 2005. Portland is now a 5A program, moving up in 2009 in the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association’s new six-classification system. Cavanah came to Portland after retiring following 27 years of teaching in Kentucky. He served as an assistant coach for two different

stints at Christian County (helping the program to the 1984 Class 4A state championship), Hopkinsville, East Hardin, Central Hardin and Greenwood. Cavanah was at Greenwood for 12 seasons, serving as the defensive coordinator PORTLAND under forGreg Cavanah mer Portland and Westmoreland assistant coach Mark Nelson. Cavanah was promoted to the head-coaching position when Nelson left to start the program at South Warren High School. From 2010-12, Cavanah led the Gators to 19-14 record and two playoff appearances (in 2011 and 2012), suffering a secondround loss to eventual state champion Bowling Green in 2011 and falling to Christian County in the opening round of the 2012 playoffs.

Evans – who has been battling an abdominal injury in the preseason – led the team with 18 receptions for 390 yards and five touchdowns, but he moved into the backfield at times over the team’s final four games, gaining 355 yards and seven touchdowns on 42 carries. “Brad is going to play several different positions,” Harris said. “We’re going to move him around and find ways to get him the football.” Junior Brandon Green will also see action at wingback. Senior Dalton Hodges is the frontrunner to start at tight end, though juniors J.R. Lynch and Tanner Troutt are battling for playing time there as well. Experience returns at split end in seniors Michael Evans and Jake Perry, and junior Lukas Carter could also be in the mix. “Lukas Carter, we like his aggressiveness and how he goes up after the football,” Harris pointed out. Michael Evans caught 14 passes for 260 yards and two touchdowns last season, while Perry’s five receptions resulted in 131 yards. Senior Mason Scruggs

Senior tailback Darrin Akins is Westmoreland’s top returning rusher after gaining 424 yards last season.

Westmoreland returns all three of its down defensive linemen in its 50 defense, which consists of a 5-2 front. Senior Luke Hall is back at nose tackle, while classmates Holmes and Gage Rigney return at the defensive tackle spots. Luke Hall made 63 tackles (41 solo) last season and had four quarterback sacks en route to being a 9-AA First Team All-District selection, while Holmes and Rigney had 51 and 40 total tackles, respectively. Holmes

and Rigney combined for eight sacks. “Our interior defensive line is going to have to be the strength of our defense,” Harris said. “They’re all returning. They’re all seniors. They have multiple years of experience. They’re all very strong, and they’re an athletic group.” Belcher, Carr, Scruggs, Ward and both Harpers are also options on the defensive line. Both defensive ends will be first-year starters. Three seniors – Hall, Michael Evans and Jor-

dan James – are batting for playing time there. “Defensive end is a concern,” Harris said. “We have three seniors vying for those positions. They’ve all worked very hard. It’s just a matter of them being inexperienced.” Evans returns at linebacker after setting the school record with 144 tackles (90 solo) last season. He also had two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Evans was named the 2013 District 9-AA Most Valuable Player and the

Sumner County Defensive Player of the Year. “His biggest strength is that he just seems to see the game on a different level,” Harris said. “He has an excellent nose for the football, and he’s such a good athlete that if he does make a mistake, most of the time, he can make up for it.” Green is the likely starter at the other linebacker spot, with Crowson and Todd providing depth there. Kirk and Perry are returning starters in the secondary, with Kirk at cornerback and Perry at safety. They’ll be joined by Akins at cornerback and Troutt at the other safety position. Kirk made 62 tackles (38 solo), had two fumble recoveries and intercepted a pass last season, while Perry finished with 56 tackles (30 solo) and a team-high three interceptions. Carter, Graves and Lynch will provide depth in the secondary. “I’m concerned about the depth in our second-

ary,” Harris said. “We feel like Tanner Troutt has improved greatly in our secondary. We are expecting big things out of him.” The Eagles’ lone district loss the last two seasons came against White House, which has won back-to-back 9-AA championships. “This year, everybody is going to have a very competitive football team,” Harris said of 9-AA. “For the most part, everybody has a lot of people returning. “You have to pick White House (as the favorite) until someone can prove they can knock them off. After that, it’s pretty much evenlymatched among everyone else.” Westmoreland opens the season on Friday, Aug. 22 against visiting Portland then will face another neighboring rival the following week, a contest at Macon County. The Eagles open district play on Sept. 5 with a game at Sycamore.

KNIGHTS’ YOUTH WILL BE SERVED With only eight seniors, PJP II underclassmen will have opportunities to step forward By Chris Brooks cbrooks@tennessean.com

Youth ... the Pope John Paul II High football team has lots of it. The Knights have just eight seniors on this year’s squad. That means that more underclassmen will play

key roles for a team trying to climb out of the Division II-Class AA East-Middle Region basement following a fourwin campaign last year. For head coach Jerry Joslin, that also means a constant learning process that he hopes will lead to improvement

across the board. However, that process isn’t without its flaws, and Joslin hopes his players can begin to see their errors and learn from them. “Number one, they’ve got to see their mistakes,” Joslin said. “We’ve got to be more

visual with what we’re doing. A lot of times, you can talk about it, but you have to see it. That’s what we’re trying to explain to them right now. Being visual is a big thing to me right now.” That visual aspect, especially on the defensive side, will be vital to

slowing down some of the offenses the Knights will see this year. “Screens and draws, when they’ve worked against us in practice, the kids didn’t really know what they were doing,” Joslin said. “But we can’t get discouraged. We don’t want any discourage-

ment right now.” Instead, the plan is for the Knights’ staff to accentuate the positive to their young players. “We’re going to coach from a positive standpoint,” Joslin said. “We want our kids to fight and continue to try and get better. If they do that and they build it up, we’ll

Junior Matt Craven, along with sophomores Kenner Lycans, Drew Bledsoe and Coby Neal (who ineligible until the team’s Sept. 19 game against vistiing Baylor) are competing to fill Scholato’s vacant position, with one of them likely to claim the other starting linebacker spot. Up front, several players will see time on the defensive line, as Joslin wants to give players a chance to prove their worth and gain snaps as the season progresses. Juniors Austin Carlisle, Luke Carver, James Jennings, Chase Moyer, Luigi Sosta, Shaun Kopko and Nicholas Nixon are among the group battling for major playing time up front. Senior Max Swearingen will line up at defensive end, and juniors Michael Locke and Al Gordon are in the mix at the end spots as well. “What we’ve tried to create is battles at every position,” Joslin said.

“The one position that there probably wasn’t one was the offensive line. That’s our most stable group. They’re seasoned.” Sophomore Nick Scott and senior Max Swearingen are expected to start at guard spots, while senior Casey Thompson and junior Nicholas Nixon will handle the tackle positions. Juniors Shaun Kopko and Michael Locke will play at center. One area that could see significant improvement is in the specialteams department. Junior placekicker Jackson Morris has been hitting field goals from more than 50 yards in preseason workouts, and that length could contribute to a big change in field position on kickoffs. Morris hit seven of nine field goals and 13 of 14 extra points last season. “We’ve got to put ourselves in good positions in terms of the kicking game,” Joslin said.

help the Knights have more success in flipping field position. “It’s when you start on your 20 or punt from your 10 and give the other team possession at midfield or better, then you get into a bad cycle,” Joslin said. “Jackson Morris can help us flip field position, and Pace Dempsey can help us on punts as well. He punts the ball well.” On offense, a number of different players could contribute. The quarterback battle could wind up being a timeshare between sophomores Ben Brooks and Goodpasture transfer C.J. Laws. Both could be on the field at the same time, as Laws has also lined up at wide receiver when Brooks is in the game. “He’s too good of an athlete to keep on the sideline,” Joslin said of Laws. “He’ll be out there.” The running game will be anchored by junior Quer’Derius Hunter (142 carries, 660 yards, four TDs) and sophomore Jamaal Thompson. Hunter has dropped nearly 25 pounds since last season. “Right now, (Hunter) has cut his weight some and he looks good,” Joslin said. “He’s hard to bring down. Jamaal Thompson is giving him a lot of competition right there and getting some carries. Jamaal’s got a little slip to him. Those two kids – it’s like the quarterback situation – we’ve got a battle.” The Knights want to spread the field more, and Jacob Businda and Carter Singleton could be the biggest beneficiaries of that change. PJPII » FROM 36 call a “sniffer back,” or a running back who lines up in the slot. Others who will line up out wide include junior Jeffrey Valera, sophomore Jermaine Mason, senior James Mainland, junior Neal Adams, sophomore Jalen Cambridge and seniors Zach Janson and Jacob Catignani. Catignani’s presence helps, as he is coming back from a knee injury to reclaim a starting role. Senior Hunter Apple injured his knee in preseason workouts and it is still not known if he will be able to play this season “Hunter was having a good first week of practice,” Joslin said. “He was emerging as a leader. If it’s an ACL (anterior-cruciate ligament tear), it’s devastating. At the same time, some-

body’s misfortune is somebody else’s fortune.” Thompson, Brooks, Valera, Mason, Cambridge and others are among a group who could see time in the secondary, but Joslin said those defensive back positions are wide open. “The secondary is a challenge right now,” Joslin said. “Coach (Brent Alexander) is trying to piece together the puzzle. I think he’s got the talent to do it, but it’s about putting it together.” Like last season, beginning the year with wins could be critical to having some momentum when region play opens up. The Knights began 2013 with victories over Stratford and Lincoln County. They’ll host Stratford to begin the year on Aug. 22 before traveling to Lincoln County the following week. “They’re crucial

We feel like, if we can get better and stay healthy, we have a chance to go into the (region) season with some wins and do a better job of winning some games in those situations.” Unlike last season, what they won’t have to do in the regular season is make road trips to Chattanooga. The

Knights had to travel down Interstate 24 three times last season, including their seasonending 41-25 loss at Baylor in the first round of the Division II-AA playoffs. Baylor and McCallie will both visit the Knights this season, as will Ensworth, Montgomery Bell Academy and White House, who the Knights defeated 18-10 in the regular-season finale last year.
