TOAST OF SUMNER COUNTY

Customer service among Readers’ Choice winners Our everyday lives can sometimes be a predictable routine, even bordering on humdrum, as we sometimes forget to appreciate all that’s around us. Day after day, we dash here or run there to grab a quick bite, pick out a gift for a loved one, hunt for a home remedy or perhaps stop by the doctor’s office to get a prescription for that nagging cold or allergies. Rush, rush. It seems we’re always in a hurry to get back to work or get back home or tend to some other piece of business that begs our attention. Before we know it, everything around us is a blur, and by the end of a busy day it’s hard to remember where we’ve been and what we’ve done. In our hectic lives, where convenience and

» MIKE TOWLE customer service are king, it’s easy to take so many things for granted and forget to offer a simple “thank-you” or an “attaboy” to recognize those who go above and beyond in meeting our needs. That’s why it’s good every now and then to take a look around and give special recognition to the people, places, events and organizations that make Sumner County special. This is what we do each year with our Readers’

Choice: Toast of Sumner County contest, in which readers get to vote for their favorites in dozens of categories covering the gamut around the county. Over the past several years, we have transitioned from using paper ballots to now voting exclusively online. Frankly, the paper ballots, in which we would use inside pages of the Gallatin News Examiner, Hendersonville Star News and Sumner A.M. as ballots to be marked up by readers and then hand-delivered back to us, had become a logistical headache of policing ballot box stuffing while trying to count thousands of ballots by hand. Those days are over, which might dismay some traditionalists, but in the digital age Readers’ Choice has become more popular

than ever. Readers have experienced few, if any, problems voting online as evidenced by the number of votes that have been cast. Following a nomination process this year in which readers helped us populate 79 categories with nominations – well over a dozen in some categories – we launched a nearly month-long voting process stretching from mid-April well into May. More than 83,000 votes were cast, spread out among 665 nominations in the 79 categories. When I would go online to view the count in progress, refreshing the page every 30 seconds or so, the vote count changed almost every time. Seemingly, there was someone voting practically 24/7. This special section

provides the complete results of our 2013 Readers’ Choice contest. Even though this is labeled a “readers” contest, many of the votes cast in a particular category were cast by employees of a company, or members of that club or congregation, or parents whose kids attend that school or folks somehow associated with that group or practice. That’s all part of the fun. More power to those who took the initiative and marshaled their troops to make this happen. Many of the 2013 category winners should look familiar to you: they’ve been here before, their popularity sustained over the years as they continue to do whatever it takes to earn your patronage. In many other categories, though, you will see new

“champions” at the top of the list, proof positive that Sumner County is a dynamic, growing place, where new businesses, organizations, practices, etc. can thrive and achieve new heights. As you look through this publication, you are encouraged to try out that restaurant you’ve never been to before, or to go jogging on that trail you’ve never set foot on, or to finally get that soothing massage you’ve always wanted but for which you’ve never made time. Consider it time to stop for a bit and take a look around you, and see all that Sumner County has to offer. Sumner County Publications General Manager Mike Towle can be contacted at 575-7122 or mtowle@mtcngroup.com.

BEST FAMILY ATTRACTION

Holder Family Fun Center ‘It gives all ages something to do’ It doesn’t matter if it is 6 a.m. on a Monday or 10 p.m. on a Saturday night, there’s always a place to knock down some pins with your family and friends thanks to the Holder Family Fun Center, with locations in Hendersonville and Gallatin. And people appreciate the access to family-friendly fun with no time limit as the facilities have been voted Best Family Attraction for the second year in a row. “It gives all ages something to do,” says Barbara Holder, who owns the businesses with her husband, Dan. “Bowling is a form of exercise, and it is

a good form of socialization. And you don’t have to worry about the weather. We get a lot of birthday parties, corporate parties. It’s a great place to get out and do something fun.” Dan Holder originally opened the Hendersonville center in 1976, then together with his wife they opened the Gallatin center in 1993. In 2011, the Gallatin location was overhauled and reopened with a two-story laser tag room, state-of-the-art Brunswick equipment across 24 lanes, arcade, and lounge with billiard tables and full-service

bar. The renovations and upgrades extended to Hendersonville as well, with a new super speedway, indoor go-karts, 18hole miniature golf course, bumper cars, giant inflatables and bungee jump. “Everyone is really glad that we reopened,” Barbara Holder says. “They appreciate the newness of the center and the new attractions. There is obviously more competition than there was before, but business continually is growing.” As for the win, the Holders are just glad to be able to continue to contribute to the growth of the community. “It makes all the work we have done worthwhile,” she said. —Hollie Deese/For Sumner County Publications

BEST GOLF COURSE

Bluegrass Yacht & Country Club ‘Tradition is very important to us’

Bluegrass Yacht & Country Club 550 Johnny Cash Pkwy. Hendersonville 615-824-6528

The Bluegrass Yacht & Country Club has an 18hole, par-72 golf course on Johnny Cash Parkway in Hendersonville. It opened in 1951 and now has over 660 members. The club hosts several tournaments throughout the year, including being part of the Ashworth Elite Series. According to club representative Lisa Stubbs, because Bluegrass Yacht & Country Club belongs to the ClubCorp Network of country clubs, members can take advantage of discounts at Bluegrass as well as at the company’s more than 200 private golf and country clubs, busi-

ness clubs and resorts. Stubbs said that joining the Bluegrass Yacht & Country Club means not only becoming a member of a golf club but also a community. “Tradition is very important to us,” she said. “We have members who are grandchildren – third generation members.” She said the club works hard to have a strong connection with the community as a whole. “Once a year, we have a tournament where we invite the community in; it’s called the ClubCorp Char-

ity Classic, and it is an event where we raise money in connection with the corporation but we choose a local charity,” Stubbs said. “This year, we’re giving to The Edison School.” Aside from the golf course, the private club has other facilities including a restaurant and marina. Its tennis facility was named a “Top 50 Tennis Welcome Center for 2008” by the Tennis Industry Association and United States Tennis Association. Its ballroom can accommodate up to 350 guests and hosts several events throughout the year, many of them open to the general public. —Alexander Quiñones/Sumner County Publications

BEST PIZZA

Knead Dough Pizzeria ‘Seeing the smiles ... has been fantastic’ Sumner County residents who are looking for a hot, fresh and delicious New York-style pizza and a place for quality time with their family have to look no further than Knead Dough Pizzeria on New Shackle Island Road in Hendersonville. Being voted Sumner County’s No. 1 source of pizza by local readers comes as no surprise to owner Gabe Fairchild. Baking pizza from scratch with fresh ingredients on a stone deck oven is a labor of love for Fairchild, one that he enjoys sharing with customers. “Seeing the smiles on

our customers’ faces and getting to know them over the years has been fantastic,” Fairchild said. “I love hearing compliments like ‘I haven’t had pizza like this since I was in New York.’” A popular attraction of Knead Dough Pizzeria is the open kitchen, where customers are invited to watch their pizza being prepared step-by-step. Kids watch attentively as their dough is tossed into the air and then slathered in fresh sauce and covered with the toppings of their choice. Knead Dough Pizzeria

also features a Wii video game station and other activities for kids to enjoy while they wait. Kids can also draw on the floor with sidewalk chalk to add their own art to the store décor. Fairchild believes that it is more than their delicious food that sets them apart from other pizzerias in the county. It is their seasoned staff. “Our staff offers great attentive service that customers appreciate,” Fairchild said. “This business is a blend of service and quality food, and when people enjoy their experience and tell their friends about it, there is nothing better.” —Matthew Diggs/For Sumner County Publications

Reubens, hamburgers and Philly Cheese Steak are just a few of the many delicious sandwiches available at Sax Deli & Grill located in the City Square Shopping Center on West Main Street in Hendersonville. Customer buzz has led Sax Deli & Grill to be recently voted to have the best sandwich in Sumner County. ents,” said Shawn Massey, general manager. “Our dressings and sauces are made in house creating a phenomenal taste.” Customer Ben DeRose frequents Sax because he appreciates the commitment to flavor as well as the speedy service he receives. “I had the Philly cheese steak, and it was delicious,” DeRose said. Some of the most popular items on the Sax menu are their hamburgers and fries. The staff at Sax patty out all the ground beef themselves and cook them fresh on the grill. are transformed into the perfect complement to any entrée. The extensive and unique menu draws customers away from the Indian Lake and Glenbrook commercial centers and back onto Main Street Hendersonville. Massey also attributes the success of Sax to a knowledgeable and

friendly staff. They are all smiles as they work together to enthusiastically satisfy their guests. “They are ready to answer any questions customers have about the ingredients in our food,” Massey said. “They work hard to do a good job.” —Matthew Diggs/For Sumner County Publications

BEST LIVE MUSIC VENUE

The Whippoorwill ‘It’s kind of like a “Cheers” in Gallatin’ When owner Loney Hutchins envisioned the establishment that would become The Whippoorwill on the square in Gallatin, he knew it would be three-part – a restaurant, an art gallery and a topquality music venue. Having spent most of his career in the music publishing industry, Hutchins hoped to give promising acts the same chance at success that he had. “I wanted to build a stage where people could aspire to realize their dream,” he said. Hutchins had the option to locate in a larger venue seating 300-400, but

went with the smaller space at 118 N. Water Ave., because “the building acoustically and spiritually had a really good vibe to it.” The Whippoorwill opened in October 2010. The structure, which used to be two buildings, houses a stage with nearby brick walls that have an amphitheatre effect, naturally projecting to the room. “You can almost perform in The Whippoorwill without any equipment, it sounds that good,” Hutchins said. her staff keep guests comfortable in the style of a place where everybody knows your name. “That’s the one thing about us being a small business, it’s kind of like a ‘Cheers’ in Gallatin because we do try to treat everybody like family,” she said. The Whippoorwill, which is open Tuesday through Saturday, features live music nearly

BEST PEDIATRICIAN

Jason Kastner ‘I enjoy seeing the kids as they grow and develop’

Dr. Jason Kastner, pediatrician Gallatin Children’s Clinic, 648 Hartsville Pk. 615-451-9246 White House Childrens Clinic, 128 Raymond Hirsch Pkwy. 615-672-8118

Sumner County residents trust Dr. Jason Kastner with laying the foundation for their children’s healthy lifestyle. He was recently voted Best Pediatrician in Sumner County by local readers taking part in the 2013 Readers’ Choice contest. Kastner has a passion for helping children on their journey of well being. He guides his patients and their families through all of their healthcare needs and has committed to making himself available to addressing all of their concerns, big or small.

“I enjoy seeing the kids as they grow and develop, watching them go through life and experiencing it with them,” Kastner said. One of Kastner’s favorite aspects of his job are the relationships that he builds with families. Going above and beyond basic care, Kastner takes time to get to know his patients and what specific treatments could improve their health. Kastner gives each patient, and

their families, his undivided attention as he works to give them the best care possible. Kastner’s enthusiasm and commitment to serving families in Sumner County can be attributed to a motto that guides his practice: “I try to treat my patients the way I treat my own children,” he said. He divides his time between children’s clinics in Gallatin and White House, which are part of the Vanderbilt Integrated Providers. Kastner completed his residency in pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Children's Hospital and served as chief resident in pediatrics from 20012002. —Matthew Diggs/For Sumner County Publications

BEST WEIGHT LOSS CENTER

Premier Age Management and Medical Weight Loss Center Ryan Walker, manager of Premier Age Management and Medical Weight Loss Center, has an easy explanation for why readers voted his facility the best weight-loss clinic in Sumner County. In large part, it’s because of the time spent with each patient. There’s no rush, and there’s no wait. “We don’t try to overcrowd our waiting room by double or triple booking our appointments,” Walker said. “We schedule so there is no wait when you come in. That way we can ensure everyone gets enough one-onone time with our providers.” Premier offers services for anti-aging such as hormone replacement and therapy, weight loss services and skin therapy services to include Botox.

Premier Age Management and Medical Weight Loss Center 115 Hazel Path Hendersonville 615-431-5681

One thing, Walker said, that makes Premier stand out among the competition is its use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. “We’re the only clinic in Hendersonville that I know of to offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy,” Walker said. “You sit in a pressurized chamber while breathing 100 percent oxygen, and it hyper-oxygenates your blood. “The extra oxygen in your blood has several benefits for people with conditions such as Lyme disease, Alzheimer’s and dementia. It also helps

with training recovery for people who might be training for a marathon,” Walker said. Premier expanded to Hendersonville in October of 2012 and moved to their current location at 115 Hazelpath in March. The original office is located in Brentwood. Walker said Hendersonville was the best choice when choosing a place for another office because of its up-andcoming status. “Everyone knows that it’s starting to expand a lot and boom and grow.” Walker said. “We see that as a good opportunity for a business to get in and try and establish some roots while everything is coming in around it.”

BEST BANK

Volunteer State Bank ‘The bank invests in its communities’ A lot has changed in the banking industry since 1977, when the first branch of Volunteer State Bank opened in Portland. But the core values and practices that initially drew customers to the bank built by local businessmen Larry Collins and Fred White spurred its growth in the 1980s as more branches opened in Orlinda, Gallatin, Hendersonville and Springfield. Today there are nine bank branches, including locations in Goodlettsville and White House, as well as a mortgage company, Guaranty Trust, whose main office is in Murfreesboro.

Matt Ricker, bank president and CEO, attributes VSB’s success in part to the owners, employees and directors living in and supporting the communities they serve. “The bank invests in its communities through lending and supporting local charity events, schools, and more by donating time and/or money,” he said. “We also offer

the products and technology of the larger banks while giving the personal customer service of a community bank.” Volunteer State Bank provides financial education and investment services to the community. “We appreciate our customers and feel fortunate to be given the opportunity to serve their financial needs,” Ricker says. “For over 35 years, VSB has specialized in a full range of financial products and competitive rates. We take pride in being a community bank that offers professional, friendly and courteous service to our customers. Our goal is to continue this tradition for many years to come.” —Hollie Deese/For Sumner County Publications

BEST LOCALLY OWNED PHARMACY

Perkins Drugs & Gift Shoppe (open since 1895) ‘It is a place for local residents to reconnect’ Perkins Drugs is a business that has been serving Gallatin residents since 1895 and was recently, again, voted best locally owned pharmacy in Sumner County by Sumner County Publications readers. Andrew Finney, owner of Perkins Drugs, greets customers cheerfully by name as they enter the

store. Perkins Drugs is more than just a place to get prescriptions filled and pick up a quick gift, it is a social connection point. “It is a place for local residents to reconnect with each other,” Finney said. “It is a blend of being a member of the commu-

nity as well as a healthcare provider.” Finney believes that the key to running a successful business is building relationships with customers. The pharmacy team gets to know their customers and makes an effort to spend time with them. “They trust us because of the relationships we build with them,” Finney said. Regular customer Royce Havens keeps coming back to Perkins Drugs because of the personal attention she receives,
